Mt Hutt to open three to five days per week
The short and sharp of Budget 2020
By Susan Sandys
NZME
Mt Hutt will be the first of NZSki’s three ski areas to open when it launches in mid to late June. But in an unprecedented move, days of operation will be limited to just three days a week – Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This will scale up to at least five days on July 1, including Saturday and Sunday and the three best mid-week weather days. The ski area is generally a seven-day per week operation, but this winter is expecting 50 per cent of normal visitation due to the Covid-19 global pandemic, so is cutting back its operation and staffing to reflect this. In addition, the ski area is considering reducing or limiting season pass and day pass sales following comments from skiers concerned about high skier numbers on open days. NZSki CEO Paul Anderson said in a press release that Mt Hutt tended to get some great dumps of snow, but that could see it closed because of the weather. “By planning for the five best weather days we’ll be able to give our guests more certainty on opening days,” Anderson said. In Queenstown, Coronet Peak is planning to open daily from late June, just a couple of weeks later than originally scheduled, to catch up on maintenance that was on hold during lockdown. Local favourites First Tracks and Wednesday and Friday Night Skis would still be run-
Finance Minister Grant Robertson delivered his third budget yesterday. Here’s what you need to know. Robertson announced $50 billion more for the Covid-19 response plan. About $16 billion of that is a jobs package, including a further wage subsidies package and infrastructure boost. It takes total Covid-19-related spending to $63 billion. About $20 billion remains in the kitty for future use. The $15.9 billion jobs and business package ■■ $4 billion in business support – including a $3.2 billion extension to the Wage Subsidy Scheme for another eight weeks. For companies which show more than 50 per cent monthly revenue drop compared to last year. ■■ $3 billion more for infrastructure, including building 8000 state and social houses. ■■ $1.6 billion free trades training and apprentice package. Vocational courses in “critical industries” will be made free over the next two years to help people who have lost their jobs retrain. ■■ $1 billion on environmental jobs. ■■ $400 million Tourism Recovery Fund– including a domestic tourism campaign. ■■ $900 million for Maori, including training and employment and health measures. $195m for Pacific peoples. Other Budget measures ■■ $3.3 billion in new funding for health and education. ■■ $1.77 billion for Defence Force, including $898 million for the Hercules replacement fleet, contingent on business case approval. ■■ $1.2 billion for rail, including KiwiRail’s Interislander ferry replacement. ■■ $280 million to be injected into New Zealand Post. How bad is the hit? Unemployment is forecast to peak at 9.6 per cent in September 2020, dropping to 4.2 per cent within two years. GDP growth rate goes to negative 4.6 per cent for 2019/2020 – and stays negative until June 2022. Deficit balloons to $28.3 billion this year and $29.6 billion next year. It is forecast to track back towards surplus by 2028. Net debt forecast to rise to 30.2 per cent of GDP this year and peak at 53.6 per cent in 2023 – up from 19 per cent in 2019. Debts will rise from $58 billion in 2019 to $200 billion in 2024. “This is the rainy day, put the umbrella up,” Robertson said.

Skiers and boarders will be able to replace the slopes of Mt Hutt with the streets of Methven at the first ever White Out event in the township next month. PHOTO SUPPLIED ning during July and August. The Remarkables was preparing to open daily from early July for the two weeks during the New Zealand school holidays, and then on weekends at a minimum. “We do have the capacity to scale up our operations across all of our mountains, if we see guest numbers that warrant this as the season progresses,” Anderson said. He said the ski industry had worked together on policies around physical distancing, managing gatherings in certain zones, and ensuring additional cleaning and hygiene measures.
“We’re hopeful the government will give the green light on our plans in the next day or two.” Mt Hutt’s limited opening days drew criticism on the ski area’s Facebook page, but also praise for being committed to opening in the first place. Some were worried lowering the number of days could mean higher skier numbers on the days the mountain was open. The ski area updated its post to say it understood comments regarding numbers, and was considering reducing or limiting season pass sales and day pass sales. “This is a work in progress.”
19-year-old man charged over fatal crash A 19-year-old man has been charged in relation to crash in Christchurch’s Port Hills last year that led to the death of two Ashburton teenagers. Tayla Alexander, 17, died in the crash on Summit Road on November 27, 2019, while her sister Sunmara, who sustained critical injuries in the crash, passed away in an Auckland hospital on December 13, 2019. The 19-year-old man has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death, as well as dangerous driving causing injury and driving without an appropriate licence. He is scheduled to appear in the Christchurch District Court on May 28.

“This was a devastating event and a tragic reminder to all drivers of the need to drive safely and to the conditions,” Canterbury Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd said. “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Tayla and Sunmara as they continue to grieve the loss of their loved ones.” The girls’ father, Jason Alexander, told the NZ Herald last month that the Covid-19 lockdown had served only to amplify his grief. That had been compounded by delays in the justice system at which time no charges had been laid in relation to the crash.
Alexander said he fell into a deep depression and thought about taking his own life. “I missed the girls so much I wanted to join them,” he said. He has had no contact and no apology from the driver – despite Jason making it clear he forgave him. “I didn’t want him to go to jail for a silly mistake. He is young and is already going to have a lot to deal with for the rest of his life. “Anger won’t bring them back. The boy said he was going to Sunmara’s funeral – but he was a no-show. I don’t hate him but I understand why he hasn’t made contact. I think he is really scared.”

New joy for F45 owners in lockdown By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Among Mid Canterbury business operators trying to survive the roller-coaster ride of Covid-19 are Stacey and Charlie McKerchar at F45. But amongst the chaos and uncertainty, the couple have had some new joy in their lives, in the form of baby Millie, arriving on April 21. It was the couple’s first daughter, after three boys. Stacey said giving birth in the lockdown, at Christchurch Women’s, had not been too different from her previous three births, and was perhaps even the best of them all due to the birth itself being relatively straightforward. Her midwife was Anna Campbell, whom she had worked with previously, and was relaxed and up with all the guidelines required. Medical staff wore PPE, but it wasn’t over the top, and Charlie could be there for the birth itself, a planned caesarean section. McKerchar quickly got back to running F45 online from her home office, juggling this around the four children. “I have enjoyed having time with the kids,” she said. The gym had to put everyone’s memberships on hold for lockdown, and people are rejuvenating these when it suits them as New Zealand comes back out to Level 2. The F45 doors were closed for seven-and-a-half weeks, re-opening on the first day of Level 2 on Thursday. Keeping the business afloat and members engaged during lockdown was in the form of online classes and live workouts, and these had even attracted some new members. “Health and fitness is a major part of people’s mental health, so I think it’s been something that people have missed and wanted to get back into, so it’s not been hard to build that motivation back into people,” McKerchar said. She was anticipating plenty of hard work ahead in the new economic climate, but expected health and fitness was an industry which would continue to thrive.

Increase in funeral numbers a big relief for families By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Barry Hayman
Yesterday, for the first time in many weeks, funeral director Barry Hayman was able to welcome more than 10 people to a service to celebrate someone’s life. With the government clearing the way for up to 50 people to attend funerals at Covid-19 Level 2, the Paterson’s Funeral Services manager said the change would make a huge difference for families who, under Level 3, had been forced to limit attendances to just 10. And for many families that involved the double heartbreak of having to decide who could and
who could not attend. And while his team had livestreamed services to ensure wider participation, someone had still had to make the tough call on who could actually be there physically, Hayman said. Lifting attendance to 50 would still mean making choices, but it would most likely mean most close family members could be accommodated, he said. While funeral directors were responsible for ensuring numbers were kept to the appropriate level limit, it was important that families treated services as private events and limited the number of people they invited to
attend, Hayman said. “We don’t want to be in the position where we have to say ‘no’ to someone.” During Levels 4 and 3, families had been very understanding about requirements even though non-attendance at a funeral or very limited attendance was a very distressing situation to be in, he said. The attendance limits have meant many families were planning memorial services in the future. She is still to hold her first funeral with an attendance level of 50, but Memory Funerals owner Jo Metcalf said the lift in num-
bers would be a huge relief for families. “It’s been pretty distressing for everyone, but people knew the rules and they were pretty good about accepting these. However, at 50 at least it means most of a person’s family can be there,” she said. For anyone who had lost a loved one while funeral options were very limited during the Covid-19 pandemic it was important that in the future they were able to hold a memorial service of some kind because that sharing of memories with others would be an important part of their grieving process, Metcalf said.

Youth appear to have behaved By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Despite the country being in lockdown, schools being shut and recreational activities on hold, it appears that Ashburton’s atrisk youth have been behaving well over the past two months. The Ashburton Police’s Youth Aid Officer Rob Hooper said things have been quiet and that the youth of the town have been behaving well. “There were just a handful of young folk that we had to deliver home,” he said. “It has definitely been more about education, there certainly hasn’t been anyone from here put before the courts. “It is fair to say everyone has been really good and that things have been quite quiet.” With many of the agencies and organisations they work with when dealing with youth such as schools, counsellors and Safer Mid Canterbury either not working or working to a limited capacity, it would likely become clear what kind of impact the lockdown had had on youth as those services restarted. “I was speaking to one of our analysis people in Christchurch and they were saying it is difficult to get a clear picture of what has been going on,” he said. “On the face of it though, it seems that the young folk have followed what everyone else has been doing.” Hooper said while this time would have been unsettling for many, he hoped that these challenging times would make peo-

health act, with four resulting in youth referrals. The Youth Aid role sees Hooper work with organisations like Safer Mid Canterbury, He Waka Tapu and with teacher and counsel-
lors at the district’s high schools. The focus is making an early intervention to ensure that the kids have the right skills to be able to make the right choices going forward.

Barbers back in business By Heather Mackenzie
heather.m@theguardian.co.nz
Colin Smith may have been up bright and early to join the queue outside B’s Barber Shop yesterday, but he was by no means the first there. Stylist Carla said her first client of the day had set up camp outside their door at 7am. “He told me he got here just after 7am with his camp chair, opened up The Ashburton Guardian and sat quite happily
reading until we opened at 8.30am.” B’s Barber Shop works on a walk-in basis, so owner Belinda said she wasn’t really sure how yesterday would unfold. But she needn’t have worried, by 8.15am the queue of one had swelled to 13 and stayed constant throughout the day. “I had a bit of a tear in my eye opening up again this morning. The support has been overwhelming and it’s such a good feeling to be back in business.”
Playing it safe at Alert Level 2 We are now at Alert Level 2. This lifts many restrictions, but means we all now have more responsibility too. It’s up to all of us to ‘play it safe’ so we can stop the virus from spreading again. Keep track of where you go
Allow extra time
Health services use contact tracing to reach people quickly when there is a risk they have been exposed to a case of COVID-19. This helps stop any further spread.
Allowing extra time for your journeys is very important.
To help them do this effectively you should keep track of the three Ws: Where you went, When you went there, and Who you met.
Socialise small You can now socialise with up to 10 friends and whānau. All groups should be 10 people or less, whether you’re catching up at home, or out and about.
Make the space Keep a 2-metre distance from anyone you don’t know in public or in retail stores including supermarkets. Keeping people separated in this way helps stop any new transmission.
More people will be travelling again, and more cars will be on the road. Public transport has reduced capacity as people try to keep their distance, so stay calm and be kind. If you can, try to take public transport at off-peak times, and make a note of the service you were on and where you were sitting. As we all work together to ‘make the space’ around us, there may be queues at places where you didn’t need to queue before – including public places like libraries. Remember to remain patient. Plan ahead as much as possible and allow extra time if you can.
Thanks for playing it safe New Zealand Now is the time to finish the job we’ve started. If we all play our part, we’ll lower our chances of spreading the virus again.
You should also keep a 1-metre distance from other groups when you’re in an environment where further controls are in place – such as work, or a café or cinema. Further controls might include contact recording, limits to the numbers of people allowed on the premises, and other public health measures.

SENIOR REPORTER
Readjusting to life back in the world
I
f life changed the day we went into Level 4 lockdown it changed just as significantly yesterday when our world started again. After weeks of bubbling along with just our nearest and dearest, or only ourselves for company, those of us in the workforce were suddenly and unceremoniously dropped back into the real world. And it was a shock. Working from home might have been a lonely affair, but it most definitely did have advantages. With a return to the office, all that has gone. No longer can the washing be whipped onto the clothesline between phone calls, a quick tidy up of the kitchen made before lunch. The top knocked off a beer or a wine poured at 4pm. Now it’s a day neatly divided into work, tea break, work, lunch break, work and home. But the biggest difference between working from home and working from work is distraction. The stuff you didn’t notice when it was part of your daily life. Gone is the peaceful environment that comes with being the only person in your work bubble. Yes, it may have been a lonely experience, but it’s one most of us had adapted to. What we lacked in the stimulation and entertainment that came from our work mates, was made up for in a life less regimented. Day one back in the office and a major readjustment is needed, equal to, or if not greater than that required seven weeks ago when the office door slammed shut. There’s noise that’s not your own, conversations to engage in, the social buzz. But best of all there’s company, people you haven’t seen for weeks. People with whom you can banter, bicker, swap ideas. People who do the same stuff you do, who share the same frustrations, who’re working towards the same end goal. It’s easy to take your workmates for granted when you have them alongside you, to be annoyed by some of their quirks, but take them away for a few weeks and you realise they’re actually an important part of your life. Warts and all, just as you – hopefully are of theirs, warts and all.
YOUR VIEW
‘Would you like some fries with that?’ I t’s Wednesday lunchtime. Manda is at work. Maddy and I have just wandered outside to the vege garden and cut a couple of leaves of silverbeet for the chooks. The chickens have declined in numbers recently. No, they didn’t get Covid-19 or even a bird flu. I had a cull in the week leading into Level 4 lockdown. I did my best to weed out the non-producers. If I was giving 15 per cent of my salary back then there would have to be some cut-backs and we had no room for passengers in the chicken run. I have secretly put the cats on notice also. Let’s face it, apart from providing the dog with something to chase, they give very little back. Unless you count the occasional spew on the top deck of the cat tree. Calm down crazy cat ladies, I was only joking and the chances of me ever getting the eviction of the cats past my wife are

pretty much nil. In fact if it ever came down to a cats vs competition, I’m nervous about my chances of winning. Anyway, back to the chooks, I went from six chooks down to two and wouldn’t you know it, one of them stopped laying a week after the cull. I was still thinking we could do with planting some more silverbeet to complement the mash they get each day and I like it mixed into the lettuce in my salads. I thought of hopping online and doing some click and collecting at one of our local retailers but stopped in my tracks when I ‘clicked’ that we were one day out from Level 2 and I should be able to pop instore
and select the plants I want to purchase tomorrow. This all led me to thinking about our local retailers and their survival in the days, weeks and months ahead. One of the really good things to come out of this pandemic is the big push to shop locally. I try really hard to shop locally and to be honest with some big ticket items it is hard as there are often some chunky savings to be made up the road a bit. Often when you give the locals an opportunity to compete with the ‘deal’ you’ve found out of town, they will. As good as the ‘shop local’ push is, it’s not an option for retailers to rest on their laurels and not provide top class service. Consumers will vote with their feet if they receive rubbish service. I also think retailers need to take on a McDonald’s mentality to sales as well. Would you like some fries with that?

“So, Mr Hooper, I see you’re buying some silver beet plants, did you know that broccoli is another vege that you could be growing at the moment? I love my broccoli cooked in the microwave with some mayo and melted cheese. Can I interest you in some broccoli plants and how about one of these microwave proof bowls?” That’s the sort of service that will have me voting with my feet, walking BACK into that store again. It’s a challenging time ahead but if we all play our part we’ll have this region humming again. Mercedes
AMG A45 S
I
t’s 1976, and Volkswagen’s engineers look over the first of the Golf GTIs heading out into the wide world. I like to think they knew that the brand had a revolution on its hands; not the world’s first ‘hot hatch’, but at the very least the car that was going to popularise an entire genre. Their eyes would fall clean out of their sockets if they could see this bright yellow bullet and what the hot hatch segment would become. The new Mercedes-AMG A45 S feels the beginning of a new ultra-bruising hyper hatch chapter. A large chunk of that stems from its M139 twin-scroll turbocharged 2.0-litre, paired to a new 4MATIC all-wheel drive system (more on this later) and an 8-speed dual clutch transmission.
With 310kW/500Nm on tap, it’s the most powerful four-cylinder engine ever produced; sporting more power than a Ferrari 360 and more torque than most double-cab utes. That’s 85kW/100Nm more than its AMG A35 sibling, and – crucially – 16kW/20Nm more than the Audi RS3. The S is the solitary A45 model offered to Kiwis, bringing with it a 270km/h top speed and 3.9-second 0-100km/h acceleration time. It also means a somewhat jaw-dropping $111,000 starting price, with the $7990 AMG Edition 1 options pack attached bumping its bottom line to $118,990. The extent of that price is enough to position the A45 S in the same monetary ballpark as bona-fide sports cars like the BMW M2 Competition, Porsche Cayman, and
Chevrolet Camaro. Whether a hatch should be priced against these heavyweights is a conversation that could last forever. I wonder just how many people are truly cross-shopping between the two worlds. Probably not many. Anyway, there’s a more pressing question here. How can a grocery getting, schoolrun performing, hatchback possibly put down such a wanton amount of power and torque without snapping in half or simply melting into the pavement? It isn’t AMG’s first rodeo when it comes to stuffing illogical amounts of grunt into a hatchback of course, and the last-gen A45 was plenty capable of handling its horses. But this new A45 is a new lofty benchmark again. Twirl the steering-wheel mounted drivemode adjuster to Sports+ or Race, plant
your left foot on the brake and your right foot on the throttle, and you’re greeted with a red flashing tachometer and the words Race Start. Sidestep the brake, and you’re instantly teleported somewhere else. The way the A45 handles its power off the line and out of corners is an equal parts clinic in brutality and efficiency. The SpeedShift 8-speed is as rapid as you’d expect – arguably more capable left to its own devices rather than when a human takes over via the paddles. Inattentive passengers will have their heads violently slammed back into the leather buckets, but from the driver’s seat it all feels very controlled and predictable. The engineering masterclass under the bonnet reiterates that Mercedes-Benz is still an engineering benchmark in its field.

Recalling a labour of love A t some stage in the future memories of how we spent lockdown will undoubtedly come to mind. For many of us lockdown will be remembered as a time when we took the opportunity to look through and maybe sort out bits and pieces kept over the years. Pete and Valmai Whinham have been doing just that. As a result, a note from Pete arrived in our mailbox with a fascinating newspaper clipping. The clipping is an illustrated article which was printed in this newspaper on Tuesday January 2 1996. Under the headline “Anniversary gives labour of love a hurry up” Guardian reporter Chris Mole told the story of the late Clem McLachlan getting his 1911 New Pick car ready for a rally commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand. The accompanying photograph was taken by Guardian photographer Peter Hight. Clem McLaughlan was one of the six University of Canterbury students who were founding members of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand back in 1946. He farmed in Mid Canterbury and for some years was Patron of the local Branch of the Vintage Car Club. It is thought the New Pick appealed to Clem because of its rarity – it is one of only four known examples in this country – and its style. Clem began gathering parts in 1959, the bulk being found around the Arundel area. It had been stripped down and converted for use as a post rammer; luckily the chassis, related parts and brass were all left hanging in a shed. Other parts came from Southbridge and Auckland.
Access to a partially restored car in Christchurch and studying old photographs helped Clem build a new body. Finished in bright yellow with brown leather upholstery, which are traditional New Pick colours, the car had its maiden run on the 1996 Ashburton Rally. Not long before, the 4 cylinder 3.3 litre engine had been started for the first time since 1924. Unfortunately ill health prevented both Clem and his late wife Audrey using this lovely little car. After Clem’s passing the New Pick was sold and remains in New Zealand. But what about this marque with such

he Ferrari factories in Maranello and Modena gradually returned to full production, in line with the “Back on Track” programme. The first car to come off the Special Series lines, after seven weeks in which the processing was suspended just a few hours before its completion, was a Ferrari
Monza SP2 with a black and gray livery. In the following days, a 812 GTS spider in Grigio GTS and a F8 Tributo in Rosso Corsa were among the first cars completed in the 12- and 8-cylinder lines. The new Ferraris are ready to be delivered to their owners – in USA, Germany and Australia and respectively – and to finally hit the road.
Bernard Egan MOTORING
an unusual and intriguing name? Had there been an old Pick before the New Pick? There is not a lot of information about the company which made these cars.
Some slim pickings appear in motor reference books, Mr Google has little to say on the subject. But when it comes to older, especially veteran cars, fortunately we have a wonderful source of information and fountain of knowledge right here in Ashburton, namely Diane Ross. Diane, who of course knows the ex-McLaughlan car, was able to tell us that in 1898 Englishman Jack Pick made a simple dog cart, which he sold to a local doctor for 85 pounds. John (Jack) Henry Pick (1857–1954) was a blacksmith. He had experience of working with a Stamford farm implement maker, which had begun to make oil engines. Jack Pick became a bicycle dealer, before he started to make cars in 1898. From then until 1925 he produced a range of cars, some of which some were exported to Australia and New Zealand. His first cars bore the name Pick, and later the name New Pick appeared. So there was an older Pick before the New Pick, and of course by the time Clem McLaughlan restored his car it was an old New Pick. After closing the motor business, Jack Pick traded as a greengrocer from the premises where he had made the cars. It was kind of Pete Whinham to pass on the clipping thinking it could be of interest. Sure is! And there’s been a little aside to the story. Since getting the clipping I met Chris Mole, who despite writing countless stories could immediately recall this one. We met on the historic railway overhead bridge, which seemed an appropriate location for a chat about a story from years gone by featuring a heritage vehicle.

■■OPINION
Doors opening for stranded NZ players T here is a deafening sense of irony permeating our national code right now. With the smorgasboard of issues New Zealand Rugby (NZR) are navigating through in the background – including plans to cull half of their workforce – there was finally a dose of good news over the past week with Super Rugby Aotearoa clearing the decks for a June 13 liftoff. It is a mouthwatering prospect for both fans and casual observers searching for any semblance of escapism amid Covid chaos. Meanwhile, the governing body has pushed to secure its future, whether it be via the two internal reviews taking place at present, an alignment with World Rugby chair candidate Agustin Pichot, or reported funding talks with a series of venture capital firms – establishing a sustainable revenue model top of the agenda. Despite actual rugby amounting to diddly-squat for two
months now, she’s all go behind the scenes. To say it’s a surreal time would not be an overstatement. And with Super Rugby’s return imminent in the form of a gruelling series of local derbies, the game is set for a timely shot in the arm. One component which is transpiring over the past few days is that it is opening the door for players who probably thought their Super Rugby days were behind them. World Cup-winning flyer Nehe Milner-Skudder has signed for the Highlanders for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. His circumstances are more around another injury sustained last year in France plus the season-ending injuries to Tevita Nabura, Thomas Umaga Jensen and Connor Garden Bachop. However, you wonder would he be in the same position had Covid not happened?
Adam Burns
SPORTS REPORTER
Whether he can avoid injury, or whether he still possesses the same deft footwork remains to be seen. However, it is one facet defining this Super Rugby rollout which can only be described as weird and wonderful. Ben Smith is also reportedly in talks to join Milner-Skudder down in Otago. He had been playing for French club Pau in the Top 14 competition but recently returned to Dunedin due to Covid-19, as reported by TVNZ. Another star from the All Blacks 2015 campaign is Julian Savea who has signalled his interest in a
return to New Zealand after being ousted by Toulon. There is the whiff of a startling on-field reunion of sorts which is only going to heighten the competition’s ratings pull. This is not the case for everyone. Brodie Retallick turned down the Chiefs in favour of some much-needed family time. There was a suggestion by Selwyn App reporter Jonathan Leask there was enough residual rugby cattle due to Covid for NZR to establish a sixth team which would mean three “derbies” could be played each weekend. “Imagine a backline featuring Andy Ellis, Dan Carter, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Naholo and Ben Smith running around on the same super rugby team, and the forward pack led by Kieran Read.” As exciting a notion, it would be more red tape on top of more red tape within such tight and fluid timeframes. Which is probably the same
reason why NZR opted to retain the Super Rugby derbies as opposed to forging ahead with the greatest national provincial competition of all time. Depending on what the next wee period brings, this could still materialise. Another thing to consider is how broadcast numbers abroad track. We all know New Zealand fans are parched, waiting patiently at the rugby well. As one of the first professional competitions set to return, what will the engagement be like on foreign soil? Super Rugby will (hopefully) never be viewed or anticipated within a backdrop like this ever again. And pending the findings of its review which could determine its death warrant long-term, it could be one of the last editions. If that it is the case, what a way to go out.
■■YACHTING
Stars and Stripes ‘struggling’ America’s Cup challengers Stars and Stripes Team USA look in doubt once again, with Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton describing their opponents as “hurt” and “struggling”. Stars and Stripes hit out against claims they would be withdrawing their challenge from the 36th America’s Cup due to funding issues last month. They made clear their intentions to contest for the Auld Mug in Auckland in 2021 in a statement which said they had “not withdrawn and had no plans to do so”. However, speaking to Mike Hosking, Dalton said he didn’t have high hopes the US team would survive the financial hit of Covid-19. “I know that the yard that was building their boat was commandeered to build PPE and that’s hurt them,” Dalton said. “I’m not sure at this point whether it’s been released to go back to the building of the boat, but they’re struggling. “I wouldn’t rate them as a high chance.” The America’s Cup World Series has been heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, with only the third and final regatta scheduled for Auckland in December still on the cards. It’s meant teams will only have one opportunity to scope out the competition. Dalton said it was “absolutely critical” for Team New Zealand that the Auckland regatta went ahead. “That’s our only chance to get
a look at our opposition,” Dalton said. “We need that regatta. “We didn’t put ourselves in the challenger rounds like Oracle did last time to keep an eye on everybody to see if they were faster, we frankly don’t believe that is the right way that the Cup should be run so this will be our only way of seeing where we check-in.” Dalton admitted significant building time had been lost during the lockdown but have secured a number of extra hands courtesy of redundancies elsewhere. “We’ve been able to pick up other boat builders from within the industry because now the industry is hurt like all industries and we’ve been able to offer them jobs,” he said. “That’s upped our labour force and kept them employed to get the boat back on schedule.” Dalton said he believed next year’s America’s Cup would be won by the team best able to adapt to the current global situation, with high hopes around Team New Zealand’s ability to do so. “Sport is about winning and losing and being able to adapt,” he said. “Because of Covid-19 and the disruption of all teams, the team that can adapt, keep its feet on the ground, its head out of the clouds and not panic is going to do the best. As Kiwis, we are quite good at that. “Team New Zealand has been Team New Zealand sailing on the Waitemata Harbour. damn good at that.”

■■RUGBY
The Bus en route to the Canes? Rugby World Cup winner Julian Savea is open to a return to rugby in New Zealand after parting ways with French side Toulon. Savea joined Toulon from the Hurricanes in 2018, but failed to make the desired impact at the French club. Savea announced his “bittersweet” departure on Instagram. “Obviously the season’s done and I’m coming home soon hopefully, once everything dies down. “I guess trying to get back into New Zealand rugby maybe or find another contract – that’s a fivemonth, six-month timeline in terms of what can happen. “Because of Covid-19 still going and we’re waiting for everything to calm down. “When teams and I guess organisations are ready to sign again, enter talks like that.” He said he’s enjoyed his experience at Toulon, “My experience here in France has been awesome. “The media hasn’t really been on my side but other than that for me it’s been a pleasure being here.” The 29-year-old winger said he plans to return home and look at his options from there, but is open to playing in New Zealand again. “It’s been a bit tough,” he said. “But with this Covid-19 being on … clubs are sort of not signing anyone and sort of don’t really have that money to offer people.
Julian Savea: Not ruling out a move to the Warriors. “So it’s sort of made my decision easy. “Like I said that five-six month timeline, just for me, [it would] be better off being in New Zealand, with friends and family, I get to train back up with the boys. “And I guess get my body and my mind all ready to go for what-
ever is next, whether that’s in New Zealand or somewhere else overseas again. “Until that time comes, first and foremost I just want to get home and see the family.” Savea added that he could even be open to a switch to the NRL. “Ideally I would like to be back
with the Canes brothers … if that doesn’t happen then I’ll see my other options. “It could be another franchise, it could be Japan, it could be even maybe the Warriors. “I don’t know. We’ll see.” Savea added to those thoughts in his Instagram post.
“Thank you to those who have supported me over the past two seasons here at RCT. “I will forever be thankful for this experience and my time in Toulon,” he said. “Very bittersweet moment not getting to end the season the way I wanted to, but also very excited for this next journey ahead of me. I want to thank all my brothers that I’ve played with over the past two seasons, you guys are very special to me and I’ve made some life long friendships I will cherish forever. “I want to thank @rctofficiel, the coaching staff and the management for always being good to us. It’s been a long journey and not a pretty one either but the highs definitely outweigh the lows,” he added. After a slow start to his Toulon career, the 54-test All Black was on the receiving end of stinging public criticism from club president Mourad Boudjellal last February, with the outspoken Boudjellal going as far as to say Savea would not play for Toulon again. “I’m going to ask for a DNA test. “They must have swapped him on the plane. “If I were him I would apologise and go back to my home country,” Boudjellal told a French radio station. “I’ve told him that he was free to go and wasn’t welcome at Toulon anymore.”
Massive insurance costs for returning All Blacks By Liam Napier Super Rugby’s imminent return to New Zealand shores brings with it confusion as to why some returning stars have re-committed to local teams and yet others are not. Nehe Milner-Skudder and Sam Whitelock are back to heighten anticipation for the Super Rugby Aotearoa competition, starting next month. Brodie Retallick, Waisake Naholo, Ben Smith, Ryan Crotty among others are back in the country, too, but not expected to suit up. And while not seeking a New Zealand contract until next season, Julian Savea has announced intentions to return from France. Why can’t all players returning from lucrative excursions to the safe havens of home be swiftly ushered into the five franchises to immediately enhance the quality of the derby competition? As usual money, or in this case insurance, is the bottom line. The Herald understands insurance costs are in the tens of thousands for each player contracted abroad. These agreements can take months to negotiate, even for a 10-week competition. Romanticism strikes at the heart of Ben Smith returning from France to again dash in from the backfield and put team-mates in space with effortless ease.
As a homegrown lad, Highlanders centurion and favourite son of the south, Smith would no doubt love nothing more than to run out under the Dunedin roof for Super Rugby Aotearoa’s opening-round match on June 13 against the Chiefs. Unfortunately in Smith’s case, the Herald understands that vision is unlikely to eventuate. Milner-Skudder, Whitelock and Savea are different from other returning All Blacks in that they no longer have overseas commitments. Having signed with the Highlanders for the Aotearoa competition and the 2021 season, Milner-Skudder will no longer join Toulon on the three-year deal he inked in late 2018 before serious shoulder injuries stalled his career. Likewise Whitelock is now fully committed to New Zealand rugby after the Japanese Top League season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Savea, too, has finished his turbulent Toulon deal and signalled interest in re-joining the Hurricanes, another New Zealand franchise or switching to the Warriors from next year. Other high-profile All Blacks such as Retallick, Smith, Naholo and Crotty have longer-term deals to fulfill abroad. Smith is understood to be under contract to
Sam Whitelock will be running out for the Crusaders this year. join Retallick and Aaron Cruden at Wayne Smith’s dominant Japanese Kobe Steel side as direct import replacements for Dan Carter and Andy Ellis.
The insurance costs associated with covering the salaries of existing contracts such as Ben Smith’s – and Naholo’s at London Irish – is significant.
Outside his salary, the Chiefs are understood to have paid $12,000 in insurance to cover Cruden’s Kobe contract. New Zealand Super Rugby franchises, many of whom are now making redundancies and struggling to pay their venue and wage bills, don’t have the capital to splurge on these hefty insurance costs. From a risk perspective, there is no upside for Naholo or Smith to re-join their beloved Highlanders. As much as they would love the chance to represent a jersey they deeply care about, the reality of doing so would jeopardise future earnings that will set their families up for life. Smith is 33 and likely contemplating the final stint of his career in Japan. Late additions to New Zealand squads, including Milner-Skudder and Whitelock, for the Aotearoa competition stand to earn $1800 per-week – pittance compared to deals abroad which frequently nudge the $1 million per-season mark. Cruden’s case is different in that he has been ensconced in the Chiefs squad since the start of the season, with his wage factored into pre-Christmas budgets. He then only needed approval from Kobe to extend his stay in Hamilton.

Oceanex chasing golden ticket Kiwi-bred mare Oceanex will be out to secure a golden ticket into the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington tomorrow. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr-trained fouryear-old will contest the Listed The Andrew Ramsden (2800m) with the winner receiving ballot exemption for the race that stops a nation. Her connections are heading into the race with plenty of confidence after the Ocean Park mare’s triumph in the Listed Port Adelaide Cup (2500m) at Morphettville last start. “It was a fantastic win,” Kent said. “I don’t think it was a strong race class-wise but she did display a good staying performance, which is really important for us to see. “The way she was three-wide early and still stayed on really strongly at the finish gives us confidence that she will stay the trip on Saturday. “The race lacks a bit of depth on Saturday, but there
M3
are two or three to beat there that are classier than what she faced last time.” Oceanex has drawn the ace barrier for Saturday’s contest and Kent is hoping she can keep her winning streak at Flemington intact. “It looks like it is going to be a nice race for her,” he said. “She has drawn one and can relax. “It looks like there could be some decent speed on with Runaway and Too Close The Sun. She is unbeaten at Flemington and I think her work has improved. “We are really happy with her going into this one, she is spot on. We can’t have her any better and I am really looking forward to it.” Regardless of the outcome this weekend, Oceanex is likely to head to the spelling paddock, however, Saturday’s result will dictate which path she takes in the spring. “If we win the race we’ll put a circle around the Melbourne Cup, it’s a golden ticket.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Creativity will be abundant. You’ll tap into it at any time you choose because you know the route. A relaxed state is good but not necessary. You can produce in any mood. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Two success rules for the day: Commit to getting a job done, and follow your instincts. Those two actions will carry you to solutions and new highs of inspiration. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Everyone will not be moving at the same pace, but if you follow the “no one left behind” rule, you’ll all arrive at the same place eventually. “Patience and support” will be your winning motto. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): When you’re connecting with people who are good for you, rapport will build with every interaction. And even when it’s not so smooth, you’ll get the sense that you’re bringing out the best in one another. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll be creatively inspired by traditions, manners and tried and true methods. You won’t leave it there, though. Follow the impulse to build on tradition and carry it into the future. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You won’t achieve happiness alone because it’s a byproduct of your service to others. When you feel like everyone is lifting together, that’s when you’ll be truly joyful. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You are always looking for ways to have and be fun. It won’t take much now. A few good ideas and the courage to try them out. Failure, by the way, can also be a lot of fun! SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Many will make the mistake of assuming they are already so fascinating, talented, worthy, etc. that they don’t need to make much of an effort. Set yourself apart by thinking ahead and doing more. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Relationships are a collaborative, creative effort, and how they turn out is never a reflection of just one person. Even so, it helps to choose well upfront, it makes a huge difference. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Can you trust your feelings? While they often tip you off to things you can’t rationally explain, feelings can also lie with abandon. Question them as you would any other nonevidentiary opinion. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You aim to delight people you love. Start the idea machine up, and you’ll soon be brimming with creative energy. Follow through and document your process. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Micromanaging is unnecessary, especially when the manager and the managed are the same person. You have your reasons for doing what you do even though you might not always be aware of what they are.

Pre-season training for community rugby is set to return in just over a week. By Adam Burns
adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
A return to club rugby is in sight. New Zealand Rugby (NZR) have outlined plans for a return to the community for its provincial unions. The governing body is adopting a threephased approach, with pre-season trainings able to commence no earlier than May 25. However competition games are at least five weeks away as NZR monitors Government advice and mass gathering restrictions under Alert Level 2, which are set for review also on May 25. As the country shifted into Alert Level 2 yesterday, unions are able to begin putting procedures in place for clubs including hy-
giene protocols and systems around gatherings and contract tracing. NZR head of participation Steve Lancaster said rugby was taking a measured approach for the road back. “I know our rugby community is very keen to be back out on the grass, but we’re being very cautious. “We must get it right, and get it right the first time. The health and safety of our community is paramount,” he said. He added provincial unions could set competition start dates to suit the needs of their own communities. Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU) chief executive Ian Patterson confirmed they were targeting a June 20 start for senior rugby.
“Obviously there’s a bit to put in place first,” he said. However he said the combined club competition with neighbouring sub-unions Ellesmere and North Canterbury was “unlikely” in its standard form. “There’s a variety of reasons, but that window is closing,” he said. “We are still in discussions around options and looking at other models.” Patterson was confident the union had the ability to control numbers in accordance with Alert Level 2 guidelines around mass gatherings. “We’ve talked about spread games around venues.” He added player registrations would be imperative in the lead-up.
NZR said the phased approach would also apply to secondary school rugby and schools were also required to work within government guidelines for the education sector. “New Zealand has done an incredible job of staying home to stamp out Covid-19 and the rugby community has greeted the news of the return of rugby with excitement,” Lancaster said. “We are now asking for patience all around this. “As keen as we are to return to play, we all need to take the time to do the work to ensure we are ready for kick-off. “We’re asking everyone to be aware of their obligations and take responsibility for themselves.”
