NARROW ESCAPE Students on their way to school in Ashburton received a fright when their bus slipped off the side of the road yesterday morning. PHOTO SUPPLIED

A damaged stretch of road where a school bus crashed yesterday morning is unlikely to be repaired until at least spring, the council said. A Pearsons Coachlines bus slid off the side of Ashburton Staveley Road at around 8.21am, clipping a power pole and losing its wing mirror while transporting 10 students to Ashburton yesterday morning. Approximately 10 students, mostly
from Ashburton College, and the driver, were on board at the time of the crash. Nobody on the bus was injured. Pearsons Coachlines Ashburton branch manager, Mark Cook, said following the incident, police were carrying out tests on the road. The cause of the crash had not been confirmed, but poor road condition was likely to blame, he said. “It was just a greasy bit of road and the bus slid right off,” he said. One witness told the Guardian the

bus driver was not at fault and the road was a “disaster waiting to happen”. Another regular road user, Eartha Scott, said she had written to the Ashburton District Council pleading with them to reseal Ashburton Staveley Road after she almost fish-tailed out of control driving on it.

Cemented by H to face radio host By SuSan SandyS
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
An Ashburton woman who has been accused of scamming customers is laying low following a Fair Go programme about her business. Cemented by H online boutique founder Cali Kirkaldie has not responded to Guardian messages and emails, however, disgruntled customers are hopeful she makes good on a promise to be interviewed today live on radio. Kirkaldie has told local radio announcer Phill Hooper she will appear on his breakfast show today at 8am. The Fair Go programme which aired on Monday night failed to make direct contact with her, despite visiting relatives in town as well as her home, which appeared as though it had been vacated. Cemented by H is continuing with its business despite allegations of unfulfilled orders, delays, broken goods and promised refunds not eventuating. It was established as a small Ashburtonbased artisan boutique specialising in cement and handcrafted pieces, made by Kirkaldie’s young son. Kirkaldie posted an explanation on the Cemented by H Facebook page last month, where she

blamed “growing pains” as the business now had 200 to 300 deliveries being sent around New Zealand each day. “We genuinely care about our customers and are sorry that some of our customers may have had bad experiences with our products or service. “Where possible we have tried to resolve any complaints received to the reasonable satisfaction of our customers, including providing full refunds, and in some cases also still delivering refunded items where these have been in stock,”
she said. Kirkaldie said the action of a few customers had degenerated to slander which had caused distress to her and her family. Hooper said yesterday Kirkaldie had made contact with him through Facebook following him posting a link to the Fair Go story on his radio station’s page. He was hopeful she would follow through and turn up for the interview. “I think the fact she contacted me is a positive sign,” Hooper said. Fair Go reporter Anna BurnsFrancis posted on a Facebook
page set up for such customers, Cemented by H – Concerns and Experiences, yesterday, and suggested dissatisfied customers with large orders could take their case to the Disputes Tribunal, but those with smaller ones could make a joint claim, considering the filing fee of $45. Those who paid by PayPal could ask for a refund. “It’s unlikely this would be considered a criminal case by police as the company does sporadically deliver (even if it’s not what you ordered) and has recently issued communication about where or-
ders are at and its capacity to fill them. The Commerce Commission won’t investigate because Cali is operating as a sole trader – not a registered limited liability company,” she said. “On that note, we are aware the IRD has been informed of the Cemented by H business and we understand LEGO and other companies with copyrighted property are looking into what goods have been sold.” Among Cemented by H’s popular products was concrete LEGO men.
Ashburton police on the hunt for Hurst after no-show Police are currently searching for convicted burglar Shaun Nathan Hurst, who failed to appear in the Ashburton District Court this week for sentencing on the burglary of Stirling Sports earlier this year. Hurst, 24, used a hammer to smash a window at the store and
made off with an armful of clothing worth about $3000. The broken window cost $1000. He was spotted leaving the store, dropping clothes as he went and found in nearby public toilets. Hurst also admitted shoplifting nearly $800 in groceries and other
items and dishonestly using a stolen payWave card. In court this week, police said he had also been charged with the burglary of the Tinwald Tavern the same night in January. Hurst was facing a likely jail term and Judge David Saunders said he was to be held in custody

Tempers flare at village restoration meeting BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A working group meeting yesterday to discuss the restoration of buildings in Ashburton’s Chinese settlement was almost derailed when one councillor accused another of making disparaging remarks about himself. Councillor Selwyn Price took exception to the working group’s chair Leen Braam stating a personal view that suggested it would be difficult getting a positive result for the project because of the differing views among working party members. “Who were you referring to. What did you mean?” Price said. Braam responded by saying his words were his personal opinion. That wasn’t good enough for Price. “If it’s a personal statement I don’t like you having a go at the working group,” he said. With Price showing no sign of backing down, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel had to step in and restore order. The clash of personalities were just one indication that the restoration of the buildings in the Allens Road settlement may not be straight-forward. The council has had plans prepared and a resource consent has been granted, but tenders received for the work have revealed a greater number of issues the council needs to address. A full photographic record of the buildings, inside and out has been made, and heritage consultant Arlene Baird is working with a member of the family that lived in the settlement to identify
Selwyn Price (left) and Leen Braam. the sites of buildings previously demolished. “It’s really good to have this photographic record because the buildings are changing on almost a daily basis unfortunately,” she said. Earlier this month council community relations manager Vincie Billante told councillors the restoration was likely to be more expensive and more challenging than they might have ex-

pected. Site visits with prospective tenderers had indicated they were struggling to establish what the council actually wanted and the complexity of the project indicated it would not be a cheap job, Billante said. That would mean the working group might have to make some tough decisions, she said. Braam suggested the council might need to look outside the

Narrow escape From P1 The council responded last Thursday, advising that the road had been scheduled for resurfacing last summer, but had been delayed after the road sustained extensive damage. A temporary speed limit would be installed in the meantime “to advise drivers that this section of road may cause some issues”, the council said. Road Safety co-ordinator Jeremy Lambert said a hot summer had reactivated the bitumen and vehicles travelling over it had subsequently peeled off the existing road surface creating “long ruts”.

“At this point resealing the road became a treatment that will not fix the road rather it will just cover the existing road creating a very rough reseal,” he said. “Instead of resealing the road we will now have to reconstruct the road with a granular overlay.” The reconstruction would be commencing in the next construction season starting spring 2018, and it is understood that the temporary lower speed limit was instated yesterday. Ashburton Staveley Road was the site of one crash, one “lucky escape” and surface flooding last year, and was a key problem area identified by local motorists last April.

Hot pools investors coming on board By SuSan SandyS
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Methven Adventures has secured a major investor as it powers towards a $10 million capital raise for its hot pool project. The announcement is good news for the Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa development company, after it has had to step back from its initial deadlines of raising capital by March 31 this year and opening in autumn 2019. Director James McKenzie said yesterday he was delighted to announce the new cornerstone investor. The unnamed investor was contributing more than $1 million after undertaking a comprehensive due diligence exercise. “We have also secured support from a strong base of local investors and are expecting to close out negotiations and discussions with further interested parties in coming months,” McKenzie said. In addition, the company was encouraged by tourism growth in Canterbury and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise had connected Methven Adventures with an overseas investor who was interested in springs and spas in New Zealand. “It will be really interesting to see how these discussions unfold
Above – Methven Adventures is working on renewable energy options for the hot pools project. Left – Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa concept plan. in the weeks ahead,” he said. Methven Adventures was also “cautiously optimistic” of obtaining central government funding from the new Provincial Growth Fund, which aims to support regional development projects. McKenzie said the initial capital raise deadline in March had been set around the timing of buying the land for the project from the
Methven Trotting Club, however, directors had now recently negotiated an extension to the land sale agreement. At this point there was no deadline for the capital raise nor the opening of the hot pools, expected to cost about $12 million, excluding GST, to build. However, the opening would not be delayed by as much time as it was taking
to raise the capital. This was because other research could be done alongside the capital raise. “Once we get the capital raise we will look at what we have done and we will be able to revise the time on the opening. “It definitely pushes it out but not by the amount of time it takes to raise the capital.” Among work under way was
an energy study, with the aim of maximising the use of solar energy. The company has a concept plan and is soon to launch an architect selection competition. “We expect to be reviewing a range of the resulting concepts that will be submitted for consideration in the next four to six weeks.”

Mid Cantabrians urged to be prepared this winter BY LINDA CLARKE
Left – Snow has already fallen in Mid Canterbury this year, with Methven and the foothills receiving several centimetres early last month.
LINDA.C@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
The pantry is always full at Jeanette and Alister Maxwell’s house and there’s always fuel on hand for the generator. The sheep and beef farming family live at the base of Mt Hutt and are well prepared for power cuts, wild weather and snow. The Maxwells also have chains for their four-wheel-drive vehicles and a snowplough and bulldozer parked up in the shed for big snow events. Jeanette said winter planning also extended to their livestock and they always budgeted extra feed and silage that would be needed when it snowed. She said most people who lived along the foothills in Mid Canterbury were similarly prepared and neighbours kept an eye out for each other in big weather events. The generator provided electricity when they were cut off from the power grid and their Rayburn cooker heats food and the hot water. While the Maxwells are prepared, Civil Defence is urging everyone in Mid Canterbury to review their household emergency plans as winter settles in. Regional controller Neville Reilly said people in Canterbury were relatively experienced in

weather-related events, having been through their fair share over the past few years, but nature was unpredictable and communities could reduce the impact of winter weather by understanding the risks and getting households ready. “Make a plan with your family, flatmates or friends to get through an emergency. “Think about the things you
■ need every day and work out what you would do if you didn’t have them.” Snow could have a significant impact in Canterbury over winter, Reilly said. “It only takes a few centimetres on a road to make driving dangerous. “In large quantities, snow can disrupt transport, communications and supply lines, hampering the work of emergency services
and increasing the risks to the vulnerable members of the community.” “As well as carrying chains in your vehicle, it is good practice to check road conditions and the weather forecast before setting out. “It is also a good idea to carry an emergency kit in the car that includes a warm blanket, water and a first aid kit.”

Donna’s two best friends By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
Boasting both home-grown talent and stars from further afar, Mamma Mia! is all set to wow the crowds from next week. The Variety Theatre Ashburton musical, directed by Roger Farr, will mark 10 years of the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Today we introduce the actors taking on the roles of Donna’s two best friends. Ashburton born-and bred Kate Galbraith will perform as Tanya Chesham-Leigh. Tanya is one of Donna’s best girlfriends, who has married three times but never quite found the right man. Galbraith’s son Eddie took the lead role in the 2016 Variety Theatre’s production of Oliver, and by day, Galbraith works at Real Estate New Zealand. Meanwhile, cookbook author and former bandmate of Donna, Rosie Mulligan, will be played by Wakanui School arts teacher Cherie Livingstone. Livingstone has previously directed for the Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre and the Big Little Theatre Company and helped create eyecatching sets for a number of productions for both groups.

Methven Community Board members are continuing to consult on the issue of dangerously slippery paving stones in the town centre. At their board meeting this week, chairperson Don McLaughlin reported products tried to date had not yielded results, however, someone who specialised in the issue was to meet with members next week. In addition, the board has emailed Don Cameron, Mayor of Ruapehu, which had had similar issues. “So we are getting a few different angles on that, it would be good to sort that out as best we can,” McLaughlin said. The board has trialled various products after dismissing a $115,000 recommended treatment as it was too expensive and not guaranteed to work.

Measles risk increases Mid Cantabrians are at increased risk of contracting measles following the latest confirmed case. Canterbury’s Community and Public Health has compiled a timeline of when the most recent sufferer, from Christchurch, visited shops while infectious. Medical Officer of Health Dr Cheryl Brunton said sufferers are infectious for several days before the characteristic rash appears, and the serious illness is easily passed from one person to another through the air. People are only considered immune if they have received two doses of MMR vaccine, have had a confirmed measles illness previously, or were born before 1969. The latest case is related to the current South Island measles outbreak, which has now infected 14 people. Anyone who visited the listed places between May 1 and May 8, and is unsure whether or not they are immune, should check with their general practice. “Catch up vaccinations are free, so we encourage everyone to check their immunisation status and to be vaccinated if they are not immune.” Anyone who visited the places at those times and became unwell should phone their doctor or Healthline. They should not go directly to a doctor’s office or hospital emergency department as measles is highly infectious and people with measles can infect others in a waiting room. The recent measles case visited these places on the dates and times below: 1st May – Hoyts Northlands between 10am and 1.30pm (Screening of The Guernsey

Four-year-old saves mum’s life A Manurewa mother who was sound asleep during a house fire has labelled her 4-year-old her hero. Kristal Johnson works night shifts as she and her husband juggle childcare, and was sleeping after a shift when her McDougall St home started to go up in flames yesterday. Her 4-year-old son Tobias heard the smoke alarm go off and woke her up to tell her they had to leave the house. “It would be a different story if he wasn’t there,” Johnson said. “He saved my life.” In a state of panic, Johnson tried to put out the fire but her son was adamant they just needed to leave the house. “Fire people can help all the time Mum.

They put the fires out – not us,” Johnson said, recalling her son’s words. Johnson closed the door to prevent the fire in the front room spreading further and left the house with her son. She suffered minor burns on her arm during the fire. “He was so amazing, he even got our dog and put our dog in the car.” He tried to keep his mother calm, Johnson said. She said it was incredible to think at only 4, she owed her young son her life. “I’m five and half months’ pregnant – so there’s a lot at stake.” She later asked him how he knew what to do and he said he saw it on television. - NZME

OUR VIEW
Crusaders’ big guns front up to council W
hen your backs are against the wall and you’re fast running out of time, sometimes you just have to call in the big guns. So that’s exactly what Canterbury Rugby did yesterday when it came to their turn to make a submission at the Christchurch City Council’s Long-Term Plan hearings. The subject of the new multipurpose arena in Christchurch has been a hotbed of conversation for months with plenty of debate prolonging the build even further than first predicted. But when the opportunity came for individuals or organisations to speak directly to the council on the subject, Canterbury Rugby called in their heavy hitters in an effort to ensure that the arena gets moving sooner,
rather than later. Not just content with the usual suspects from the board of directors, they came armed with one of the most powerful men in the country in the form of All Black captain and Canterbury rugby legend, Kieran Read, as well as current Crusaders coach, Scott Robertson. The pair joined Crusaders boss, Hamish Riach and Grant Harrold, the Crusaders chairman, to put their case to the council and from all accounts their submis-
sion was powerful. The proposed arena has already had an impact on the Mid Canterbury region with the idea mooted that Ashburton District Council could in someway contribute to the build. Mayor Donna Favel was firm that it wasn’t something she was particularly interested in and considering proposed additions to our own EA Networks Centre in our Long-Term Plan, her stance seems the most logical. Results from this week’s budget could play a major factor in what happens with the stadium rebuild but even before that it would appear that the money is already there to start should the Christchurch City Council want to. They have already budgeted $253 million for the build and the Government has promised
$300m from the Capital Acceleration Fund which means they have the required money to make things move. Their biggest issues, it would seem however, is that there’s a real battle on moral grounds. A good portion of Christchurch is still feeling the heavy impact of the earthquakes and that kind of money being pumped into a sporting and entertainment complex isn’t being well received from some sectors based on the fact of the apparent signs of devastation still evident around the city. Those are fair concerns, but the potential economic impact on the city by having a venue such as the one proposed could well counter that within just a few years of completion. Not being able to host a big-
ticket item like Ed Sheeran at Easter was a big miss for the region with so much money going out of town to either Auckland or Dunedin. Have a multi-purpose arena where you can host an event such as that and all of a sudden the money spent on rental and income is huge and of great benefit to a city or region. Yesterday’s rugby submission would have been an interesting one to sit through, if only for the reaction of councillors as they had to separate themselves from the fact that sitting in front of them was one of the most powerful people in the country in Read, whose public image is on par with the Prime Minister and the head coach of one of the greatest ever sporting franchises in the world.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Wednesday, May 16, the 136th day of 2018. There are 229 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On May 16, 1868, at the US Senate impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson, 35 out of 54 senators voted to find Johnson guilty of “high crimes and misdemeanors” over his attempted dismissal of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, falling one vote short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict; the trial ended 10 days later after two other articles of impeachment went down to defeat as well. On this date: In 1532, Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro and a small band of soldiers landed on the northwestern coast of Peru. In 1703 (Old Style calendar), the Russian city of Saint Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great. In 1770, Marie Antoinette, age 14, married the future King Louis XVI of France, who was 15. In 1920, Joan of Arc was canonised by Pope Benedict XV. In 1939, the federal government began its first food stamp programme in Rochester, New York. In 1966, China launched the Cultural Revolution, a radical as well as deadly reform movement aimed at purging the country of “counter-revolutionaries”. Protecting our environment L
ast Tuesday, volunteers from throughout our community descended on Wakanui Beach to help plant more than 600 seedlings as part of a council-led regeneration project, through the Biodiversity Working Group. Students from Wakanui School, with help from their teacher Amanda Ferguson and Forest and Bird advocate Val Clemens, collected the seeds last year from one teasel sedge plant – a native grass generally found near wet areas. The seeds were then passed on to council nursery staff and Ashburton Forest and Bird, who successfully propagated the plants. Planting was completed by a number of volunteers, including some of the children that initially collected the seeds, members of the Biodiversity Working Group, local residents and landowners, and council staff. The Wakanui Beach planting day was a perfect example of our community working together to help protect our precious biodiversity. There have also been a number of other regeneration projects at Wakanui Beach recently. Last year, Wakanui School students and the Biodiversity Working Group collected and potted seeds from oi oi (a coastal reed), shore ribbonwoods (yellow flowering plants) and pohuehue

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
(a native groundcover). It’s great to see our youngest generation being active in projects that will have a positive effect on the future of our district. Biodiversity is a term that describes all plants, animals, fungi, and micro-organisms; the genes they contain; and the ecosystems to which they belong. It helps the important natural processes that sustain our life on earth, by purifying our air and water, producing raw materials for use in industry (such as food and natural fibres), controlling pests, and regulating climates. The Ashburton District has a rich and unique biodiversity, due in large part to our braided river network. This means we are home to a variety of native vegetation, fish, birds and other species. There is, however, an increasing threat to New Zealand’s biodiversity. More than 900 native species are approaching extinction and another 2800 are declining or at risk. According to the Parliamentary Commissioner for the
Environment, 80 per cent of our native bird species are in decline and many are at risk of extinction. Several rare butterfly species rely on native vegetation at Wakanui Beach for survival, providing just one reason why projects like the community planting day are crucial. Our threatened biodiversity is an issue that needs immediate and ongoing action. That’s why the council reviewed and adopted the Biodiversity Action Plan in November last year. The plan was established by the Biodiversity Working Group, which was set up by the council in 2010. This group has brought together a range of people and organisations from our district who play an important role in protecting our environment. Organisations involved in the development of the plan included landowners, industry groups, environmental protection groups, local and regional government agencies. The Biodiversity Action Plan outlines the council’s biodiversity priorities over the next five years. The main objectives of the plan are to protect, restore and maintain significant areas of biodiversity, and to encourage the community to help protect and enhance our local biodiversity. There are plenty of ways you can get involved. Get to know more about the biodiversity
around our district by exploring our local wetlands, parks, or even your backyard. You can find plenty of resources online or in our local libraries to help you identify different species. Create a habitat that attracts insects and birds by planting native trees, shrubs and groundcover in your garden. There are also a number of conservation groups and projects that would welcome your involvement. Feel free to get in touch with the council to point you in the right direction. If you have a biodiversity project in mind, you may be eligible for funding through the council’s Community Grants and Funding programme. Check out the council’s website for more details and to find out how to apply. By working together to nurture our environment, we can ensure our district remains beautiful, healthy and sustainable for generations to come. Coincidentally, there is a Forest and Bird-led Wilding Pine Day, this Sunday, May 20 at Lake Heron. If you are interested in helping to protect our biodiversity, meet at 9am at the Courthouse or 9.30am at the Mt Somers Domain. For further details contact Allan Sinclair on (03) 308-3331 or mobile (021) 129-8936.

LETTERS Roundabouts Well done Hoops for your enlightened comments in the Guardian. At last someone is showing a bit of sense, as roundabouts are the way to go in Tinwald to keep the traffic flowing and allow the residents on the east side to access the Main Road. He is correct on the suggested improvements to the Walnut Avenue/West Street roundabout, two lanes all the way around and a giveway access for vehicles turning left to Allenton. Let us start thinking outside the square as traffic flow through Ashburton is become a nightmare. Ron Paterson

Gaza violence erupts The UN Security Council plans to meet to discuss violence along the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip, following the deadliest day there since a 2014 war. Kuwait called for the session after more than 50 Palestinians were killed and over 1200 wounded by Israeli gunfire amid mass protests. Israel said its troops were defending its border and accused Hamas militants of trying to attack under the cover of the protest. It was not immediately clear what might come out of the council session. No joint statement or action followed a similar meeting after protests in March, and two UN diplomats said members couldn’t reach unanimous agreement on issuing a proposed statement circulated by Kuwait. The diplomats insisted on speaking anonymously because the discussions were supposed to be private. The draft statement, obtained by The Associated Press, would have expressed “outrage and sorrow” at the killings, sought an “independent and transparent investigation,” and called on all sides to exercise restraint. It also would have demanded that all countries comply with a decades-old Security
Quiz show gaffe Who Wants To Be A Millionaire viewers were left in shock after host Jeremy Clarkson ended his final show with a gaffe. Contestant Alan Horsburgh, was stunned by the question What type of wild animal is an ibex? He was given four options: goat, pig, hare and deer. Clarkson declared ‘I know the answer.’ Alan decided to phone his friend Tom, who confidently told him deer was the correct answer. The contestant then said ‘deer’ was his answer and the host replied ‘I’m not even going to look at the screen. That’s the correct answer.’ It wasn’t the correct answer, and goat flashed green rather than deer. PHOTO AP Council resolution that called on them not to have embassies in contested Jerusalem. The United States inaugurated its embassy there on Monday. The US vetoed a Security Council resolution in December that would have required President Donald Trump to rescind his declaration of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Earlier, the Palestinian UN
envoy urged the United Nations’ most powerful body to condemn the killings. Israel, meanwhile, called on the council to condemn Hamas, the Islamic militant group that rules the coastal strip and led the protests. Israel isn’t a council member, nor are the Palestinians. The violence came as the US and Israel celebrated the em-
bassy opening, the first official recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital after 70 years. The move infuriated Palestinians, who seek eastern Jerusalem as a future capital of their own. “A great day for Israel!” Trump tweeted. “A tragic day for the Palestinians,” retorted their UN ambassador, Riyad Mansour. - AP

The last time dad saw his kids alive As Aaron Cockman sat down to watch the new Avengers movie with his four kids earlier this month, the West Australian father had no idea it would be the last time he would see them alive. Now, the bereaved dad is in the process of planning the funeral for Taye, 13, Rylan, 12, Ayre, 10 and Kayden, 8, after they were murdered in their rural home in Osmington. Peter Miles, the grandfather of Cockman’s children is suspected of murdering the four children before killing his daughter Katrina and wife Cynda, and then turning the gun on himself. Cockman had been embroiled in a bitter custody dispute with his former partner Katrina but was occasionally allowed supervised visits with their children. “I have had so much anger ever since I was cut off from my kids, so much anger. That was due to Peter and Cynda making sure I was cut off from my kids. They weren’t schooled, they were homeschooled so I never knew where they were or how they were going,” he said. “I would just drive around

It kept me going. [I had] supervised visits and it was amazing. They were beautiful kids,” he said. The last time Cockman saw his kids, they decided to see a movie, a memory that was clearly playing in his mind as he recounted the day to re-
porters. “The last movie we watched together … Avengers, the kids loved it. It is not a good time watching a movie with kids. I get to be with them and see their reactions but it is not talking conversations to them,” he told reporters. “Because Rylan was sitting down for two-and-a-half hours, we had to go to the park so he could get up and walk around for a bit. Kat has got

Kat said she used all the little bit of money they had in their wallets. “I said ‘look’ and gave them all $10 each and gave Taye $20 and said, ‘Keep this in your wallet.’ I know they never spend it but it is just them knowing they had $10 in their wallet. “I think Kayden had $10 in his wallet for months. It’s just knowing they had their own little bag, wallet there,” he added. Cockman is now in the process of making plans to lay them to rest. Police removed the bodies from the property, Forever Dreaming Farm, at the weekend. It is expected the funeral will be up to two weeks away as the investigation continues. - NZME

Eighty-one retirement villages planned Eighty-one new retirement villages are planned throughout New Zealand, despite an annual rise of only 0.2 per cent in the number of Kiwis aged 75-plus living in such environments, a new study has found. Auckland-headquartered real estate and investment management business JLL has issued its Retirement Village Whitepaper which discovered the large number of new villages planned or proposed. Angela Ye, JLL research analyst said: “The number of retirement villages is growing at a steady pace, as the baby boomer generation reach retirement age. As of November 2017, there were 81
proposed villages in the development pipeline, which would see 12,163 units constructed. However, most of these villages are still in the planning stage.” The white paper said: “The new village development pipeline as at November 2017 had 81 proposed villages with an estimated 12,163 units. A majority of the new proposed retirement villages were at the early planning stage.” Yet penetration rates – or the numbers of elderly choosing to live in the villages – rose only 0.2 per cent annually. Last year, JLL said: “Our database combined with Statistics New Zealand’s population estimates, indicate a 75 plus years
penetration rate of 12.4 per cent in 2016, an increase from the 12.1 per cent recorded in 2015.” In the newest study, the penetration rate for 75-year-olds living in retirement villages was 12.6 per cent. New Zealand has 382 villages, 29,801 units in them and an estimated 38,741 residents. The six biggest operators are Ryman Healthcare, with 5253 units in 30 villages, Metlifecare, with 3995 units in 25 villages, Summerset, with 2609 units in 20 villages, Bupa, with 1520 units in 35 villages, Oceania, with 1186 units in 28 villages, and Arvida, with 1179 units in 21 villages. - NZME

Failings exposed after worker injury An investigation into Fletcher Construction has revealed the company failed to ensure the health and safety of a worker following an incident involving the collapse of a temporary retaining wall. The worker was injured in May 2016, when he was working in a 2m deep hole where temporary concrete blocks were being used as a retaining wall. Water was being pumped out of the hole following heavy rainfall, however, the concrete blocks shifted and the man became caught under the falling blocks. The man sustained multiple fractures to his lower right leg and required eight months off work as a result. Worksafe New Zealand accepted an enforceable undertaking from Fletcher Construction,

the country,” he said. “They will be doing this as part of their cost recovery.” Flight Centre NZ general manager product, Sean Berenson, said that during the past few years New Zealanders had benefited from some very sharp pricing in airfares, due in large part to favourable fuel pricing and an increase in carriers in the market driving competition. While airlines had invested heavily in new planes that were more efficient, there was a limit to how much the efficiencies could offset the steady rise in oil prices over the past 20 months. “Higher costs and fuel prices rising however mean it’s not surprising that we are seeing slight increases in fares being announced, particularly on domestic routes,” said Berenson. Flight Centre’s advice to travellers was to lock in airfares as soon as possible as the cheaper fares tended to sell first. In February Air New Zealand hiked charges by up to 50 per cent for extras on its domestic jet flights. The airline increased seat plus

Jet fuel prices are up 54 per cent on a year ago and while the fare increase will apply to domestic fares, Air New Zealand international fares are also under review. Jetstar is holding its fares around New Zealand, for now. “Our focus is on providing the lowest fares we can however we regularly monitor all our costs, including the rising fuel prices,” said a spokesman. hat’s not to love about Mexican food? Of all the cuisines, Mexican must be one of the easiest to prepare and one of the tastiest. The ingredients are simple and most often dishes can be quickly prepared, with the end result being much more impressive than the amount of time taken in the kitchen. And if none of that is enough, ingredients in Mexican dishes are largely inexpensive.

■ RUGBY
Model of consistency Rieko Ioane, World Rugby’s breakout star last year and one of the Blues’ most consistent players this season, has played every minute of every match for his struggling Super Rugby team this campaign. Over 11 games – including five New Zealand derbies – that amounts to 14.6 hours of rugby at close to the highest level, a testament to his fitness (which he puts down to his age of 21), toughness and pure talent. He doesn’t want a rest either, which is helpful given the Blues face the Crusaders at Eden Park on Saturday. The All Blacks rest policy, or convention as it probably should be called, is for their top All Blacks to take two matches off before the three-test series against France starting at Eden Park on June 9, but it’s difficult to see how Ioane will manage that. Highlanders skipper and fullback Ben Smith, another key All Black outside back, is unlikely to play in the next two Highlanders’ matches against the Waratahs and Reds in Australia, but Ioane will probably truck on – although he will be helped by the bye after the Crusaders match. He is one of the few All Blacks – their squad for the France series will be named on Sunday – to have such a high workload this season. He hasn’t had the luxury of standing on the wing for the entire time, either. The injuries to the Blues midfield, and Sonny Bill Williams in particular, means Ioane has played at both centre and second five – both positions which attract high traffic and high-impact defence. Coach Tana Umaga could elect to give Ioane a rest the following weekend and leave him out of the match against the Rebels at Eden Park, but that is a week before the first French test and it would mean Ioane had had no gametime for a fortnight. He also believes, as does Umaga, that his time in the Blues
The Ashburton Barbarians had to ride out an early storm before seeing off a challenge from the Celebration Lions in their Canterbury Rugby League competition clash on Saturday. The Barbarians won the match 48-22 after leading 24-12 at half time to keep their good season rolling, with Xavier Bartlett crossing for an impressive four tries. Blair Hanifin, Tafaele Talosaga, Preston Marsh, Reuben Ngatupuna Browne, James IhakaBarbarich and Marvin Brown also crossed for tries in the win, with Teje Heke (3) and Brown (1)
Rakaia continues to lead the way in Mid Canterbury Rugby’s senior B competition for the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy. Rakaia is top the table after five rounds and maintained their unbeaten record this season with a 39-22 win over Methven on Saturday, while the second placed side Southern beat Collegiate 15-12. Celtic downed Mt Somers 38-31 in a mid-table clash while the bottom of the table battle between Hampstead and Allenton was won by Hampstead, 44-12. This weekend Rakaia takes on Celtic, Allenton play Mt Somers, Collegiate play Methven and Hampstead play Southern. Blues and All Blacks lock Patrick Tuipulotu is set to miss the June test series against France due to a shoulder injury he suffered in last Friday’s defeat to the Hurricanes. Tuipulotu left the field in the 36-15 loss and is unlikely to return for the Blues until after the international break. The 25-year-old played four tests for the All Blacks last season but is likely to be unavailable for the three-test series against France which begins on June 9 as well as the Blues next two games before the break. - NZME
Razor in demand
Rieko Ioane has played every minute of every match for the Blues this season. midfield will help his broader development. “It’s good for me – I’m still young so the legs and body are still good and intact,” Ioane said. “I like to operate with lots of game time and with minutes under my belt. “It’s been tough with injuries – that’s probably the biggest reason why I’ve done that. “Probably the biggest challenge was learning No. 12 – I haven’t
played there since sixth-form – but everything else was quite easy in terms of adapting, especially with the quality of players we have here. “It has been an awesome learning experience for me.” Next month will mark one year since Ioane burst on to the world stage with two tries against the British & Irish Lions at Eden Park. He has scored 11 tries in only 13 tests but such is his star quali-
ty it feels like he has been around for much longer. “Playing that series was definitely a highlight – not only for myself but for my family,” Ioane said of the Lions tour. A fortnight before the first test he scored the opening try in the historic win by the Blues. “It’s a start for me and I’m wanting to improve and get back in that side but for now my sole focus is to play good footy for my club.” - NZME

adding four conversions. Celebration rolled out a very big forward pack and the Barbarians had to ride out the initial storm before taking firm control of the game, played in Christchurch. The Barbarians forwards, led by the evergreen Hanifin and Devaun Thompson were able to gain ascendancy upfront which Bartlett benefited from as he crossed for his four tries, but it was Thompson whose performance gained him player of the day honours. Celebration did expose a few areas the Barbarians needed to work on though, which the team
Devaun Thompson would turn into a positive to prevent them from becoming complacent, manager Matt Milne said. “We fielded a relatively young-
er side with some players being rested due to niggly injuries and to keep others being fresh bearing in mind this week’s game against Burnham,” Milne said. The Barbarians and the Burnham Chevaliers were the division one competition’s two unbeaten teams. “We know what we have to do and have switched on early to the task at hand,” Milne said. “We are building nicely and this game will be a good indicator of just where we are at. “We are calling out all our supporters to wear black and to make the trip to Burnham to show your support.”
Former Wallabies hooker Jeremy Paul knows who he’d hire to be the next Australian national team’s coach – and it isn’t Eddie Jones. Paul suggested Australian Rugby look across the ditch for Michael Cheika’s successor – naming current Crusaders leader Scott Robertson as his top choice. “If I was Australian Rugby, I’d be chasing that guy,” Paul said. “I’d be hounding that guy. I know we want to be able to produce our own coaches but I believe Scott Robertson is the best coach in Super Rugby ... he’s an incredible coach.” - NZME
No action over brawl The president of an Auckland rugby club whose players were involved in a large post-match brawl has no plans to stand any players down. The fight which broke out between Otahuhu Rugby Football Club and Pakuranga United Rugby Club after their game on Saturday afternoon has been dubbed “the worst behaviour” an attending sports photographer has witnessed in a decade. However, the outcome of a meeting about the incident was held at the Otahuhu club Monday evening, was that no players would be reprimanded prior to the conclusion of an Auckland Rugby Union investigation. - NZME
Pacific Super team? A Pacific Islands rugby team would take time to become a force in Super Rugby according to a former player who could play a key role in the new venture. Hale T-Pole, who had 33 tests for Tonga and played in Pacific Islands combinations, told Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking “it could be perfect”. It has just been revealed that the New Zealand Government put $80,000 into studying the feasibility of a Pacific islands team. T-Pole, a former Southland forward, heads the Pacific Players Association and said bringing Fiji, Tonga and Samoa together would take very careful planning. - NZME

Tactix’s winning run over In a battle of the undefeated sides, the Central Pulse stunned the Mainland Tactix in a deserved 52-44 victory. Both teams came off two decisive opening wins from round one of the ANZ Premiership, but it was the top of the table Pulse who were able to secure their third consecutive win of the season. The pre-season favourites were once again beaming with confidence while Pulse shooters Aliyah Dunn and Tiana Metuarau produced another stunning display. - NZME

The end of test cricket? Former Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum says test cricket is dying due to the rising popularity of T20. ■ HARNESS RACING
It’s in the blood
I
In the largely male dominated field of harness racing, one young Mid Canterbury lady is helping the girls knock the mantra. Sarah O’Reilly is still very much in the infancy of her career sitting in the sulky, but she’s making big strides and turning heads at every corner. Matt Markham spoke to her about beating the boys and shaking her quiet demeanour to bring forward some aggression on the track.
n horse racing the term bloodlines are often used as a measure of potential ability and in the case of Sarah O’Reilly, hers are impeccable. A third generation member of one of Mid Canterbury’s most successful harness racing families, she’s got the doubleedged sword of having all the experience in the world to call on from her extended family, but also the added pressure of having to live up to the family name. And for a quietly spoken young teenager, who is still finding her feet in the hustle and bustle of the racing world, that’s a tough challenge, but one the former Ashburton College student is relishing. She’s already on the board, having driven her first race day winner earlier this year – a moment that will sit with her for the rest of her life as a career highlight, but the desire and hunger for more success is like a drug in this highly competitive sport and O’Reilly’s keen to keep the success levels up. “Driving winners is the ultimate goal. “It’s tough – but it’s so rewarding when you get one,” she said. “It’s probably quite hard to explain the feeling of winning a race. “It’s a huge adrenalin rush and a bit of an emotional experience at the same time.” Harness racing has been pretty much all that O’Reilly has known, and all she’s ever wanted to do – a very familiar trait throughout the industry for children and grandchildren who are almost bound to follow in the footsteps of famous forebears. She’s now working full time in a harness racing stable near Christchurch and can be seen most weeks out on the track, plying her trade – which is exactly what she harboured dreams of doing when she was growing up. “It started with the family involvement, and just sort of grew from there. “I’ve been going to the races since I was young and always enjoyed working with them at home and learning more and more about them.” O’Reilly’s father is Gerard O’Reilly – one of Mid Canterbury’s finest horsemen – so the wealth of knowledge from which she has been able to draw from has never been an issue, especially when her uncles, Leo, Kerry and Patrick are also hugely successful in the industry as well. But it’s Dad who holds the special spot as mentor, in a fashion in which only a father and daughter will know. “I look up to him,” Sarah said frankly. “He has really taught me everything I know, and given me the foundation on which to hopefully build on. “He’s my biggest fan I think, but probably also my biggest critic.” While family support is great, it can only go so far and so O’Reilly has had to reach out further in the industry to find others to learn as much off as she can and who better to guide a young female in the sport, than one of the best of them ever.
Former Geraldine girl, Samantha Ottley, has taken up a mentor role with O’Reilly – helping her learn a few more of the ropes and to guide her through her driving out on the track – the relatable nature of it, and Ottley’s experience, is hard to put a value on. “I always looked up to Sam, and the way that she approaches things, so to have her as my mentor is something I’m really thankful for. “She’s out there showing the boys how to do it most weeks, so to be able to call on that
experience and knowledge is really important for me if I want to keep getting better.” O’Reilly is one of a number of female horsewomen in the industry who are leading the charge and shifting the perception that it’s a males’ sport. Female participants make up a large percentage of the industry’s numbers and they are continuing to grow too – with female names appearing more and more in the winners’ lists as drivers, trainers and owners. “There are more and more coming through the ranks which is really good – it’s nice to be a part of.” With things ticking along nicely at the moment, O’Reilly’s goals for the future are quite simple – win more races and continue the O’Reilly family legacy. “One day I want to be a trainer to carry the family colours through for another generation. “But it is also a goal to win a race for my uncles too, that would be really awesome.” And with the dedication and drive this young Mid Canterbury lass is already showing, you’d be silly to bet against it not happening.
Dad Gerard O’Reilly has a wealth of harness racing knowledge to draw on.

In brief
Kranji Mile in her sights Donna Logan admits she is a wee bit nervous as she counts down to her first major challenge in Singapore with stable star Volkstok’n’barrell, who will tackle all-comers in the rich Kranji Mile (1600m). She has made a stunning start to her Singapore training stint having produced her first winner from just four runners to date, a feat which has made locals sit up and take notice of the former Ruakaka-based conditioner. Logan will up the ante over the next fortnight as multiple Group One winner Volkstok’n’barrell tackles the $1.5m Kranji Mile on May 26, in the process taking on the cream of the local talent along with invited runners from Hong Kong and New Zealand
representative Ocean Emperor. “Things have got off to a great start so far but taking on the best in the Kranji Mile really lifts everything up a notch or two,” Logan said. “Our horses have acclimatised to the heat well, including Volkstok’n’barrell although he is a little behind the others as he arrived later from New Zealand than is ideal. “He was held up through vaccinations and the like which has meant I’ve been a little behind where I would like to be with him leading into the race. “He will trial today and it would have been nice to have had a trial before now, but all in all he is ready to run a big race.” While Logan admits to some trepidation over the timing of the
Trainer Donna Logan race for Volkstok’n’barrell, she can’t question the way the sixyear-old Tavistock gelding has settled into his new surroundings. “He is as bright as a button and
has really taken to his new surroundings,” she said. “He goes out for a pick of grass in the afternoon and has been bucking and squealing so he is definitely a happy horse. “I have the added advantage of Craig Grylls riding. Craig has been in great form of late and has been riding him in work since the horse arrived, so they have established a good rapport.” Although victory in the race would represent another significant milestone for both horse and trainer, Logan is looking beyond the immediate challenge to further action for her star. “There are four or five more feature races over the coming months that will suit him down to the ground,” she said. - NZME

■ YACHTING
Teams lining up to challenge A second US syndicate is hoping to enter the America’s Cup. Team USA21, described as a grassroots effort built around Taylor Canfield’s successful match-racing team, want to join the New York Yacht Club to contest the 2021 Cup in Auckland, reports Sail-World.com. One of Canfield’s crew, Mike Buckley, said the hardest thing was raising money for the challenge. Buckley is an American professional sailor competing in a variety of keelboats ranging from Melges 24s to TP52s in match and fleet racing. He joined Canfield’s team on the World Match Racing Tour this year and was involved with their Congressional Cup win. He said plans for a tilt at the Cup swung into action when Emirates Team New Zealand beat Oracle in Bermuda last year. “We’ve had feelers out for eight months for funding partners and to be able to put the right people together for the design team. “We also need to find the right yacht club and the right location. “We need one or two more partners. “We believe we have enough backing to get started, but we don’t have all we need. “But certainly we do have eight figures committed privately to our group right now. “We do have some very committed investors who have given
Warriors icon Simon Mannering will decide in the coming weeks whether to play on next year as he contemplates the prospect of retiring from the NRL. The 286-game veteran remains an integral member of the side and a vital presence around the club he debuted for back in 2005. Speaking after Saturday’s demoralising 32-0 defeat to the Sydney Roosters, Mannering was unsure whether he’ll extend his career into a 15th season in 2019. - NZME
Warriors nab O’Sullivan The Warriors have agreed terms with former Storm and Roosters recruitment guru Peter O’Sullivan. However, O’Sullivan won’t be able to begin work at Mt Smart until the contract is registered by the NRL. O’Sullivan was de-registered by the governing body in 2016 due to his association with high profile Australian gambling identity Eddie Hayson. If his move is rubber stamped – and Warriors CEO Cameron George is confident that it will be – then O’Sullivan’s appointment will complete the final piece of the Warriors front office jigsaw. - NZME
Harris into halves
It’s currently New Zealand’s cup, but the challengers are lining up to take it off us. us the green light to buy a simulator and start employing designers – and have people working on this project full time – which is
what a group of us are doing.” Team USA21 have until June 30 to officially enter the Cup, although late entries can be ac-
cepted to December 31 this year. Ben Ainslie Racing and Luna Rossa are the other confirmed entries. - NZME
■ RUGBY LEAGUE
Smith announces bombshell retirement By Scott Bailey Australia and Queensland captain Cameron Smith has announced his immediate retirement from representative rugby league just three weeks out from the State of Origin series. The 34-year-old Smith dropped the bombshell news at a Melbourne media conference on Tuesday, saying he’d been thinking about it since last year and “now is the right time for me to finish up”. “Last year, more than any other year, the Origin series in particular had an effect on me both physically and mentally,” said Smith. “I couldn’t quite back up after any of those Origin matches and maybe that was a sign there that it was time, because I have always been very proud of my ability to back up.” Smith’s exit coincides with the representative retirements of Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk, which were announced at the end of last year. Since making his debut for Queensland in 2003, Smith has played a record 42 Origins for the Maroons and has been captain of the side since 2012.
Big call for Mannering
Second-rower Tohu Harris could be the quick-fix answer to a shortage of halves for the Warriors when they play Parramatta in the NRL. Star playmaker Shaun Johnson is almost certain to miss a secondstraight match with an ankle injury while doubt surrounds Mason Lino. Back-up No.7 Lino limped off late in the 32-0 hammering from the Roosters and only took a reduced part in training yesterday. Coach Stephen Kearney will be forced to move veteran five-eighth Blake Green in one spot against the Eels on Friday if both halfbacks are unavailable. - AAP
Roberts up for Origin James Roberts believes a focus on team goals rather than his tryscoring haul has made him a better NRL player this year as he chases a NSW jersey. In his first posttraining interview since re-signing last July, the Brisbane centre revealed he hadn’t spoken to Blues coach Brad Fittler since the season began but felt he was ready for the State of Origin cauldron. The former Gold Coast flyer struggled at Red Hill on his 2016 arrival, with a successful stint in rehabilitation to address an ongoing battle with alcohol leading to a new four-year deal being inked last season. - AAP
Cleary rivalry ‘awkward’
Cameron Smith has played a record 42 State of Origin games for Queensland. In that period he has missed just one game – the series opener in 2010 due to injury – and won a record 26 matches. Since playmaker Thurston’s debut in 2005, the pair have played a crucial role in the Ma-
roons’ 11 of the last 12 series victories. Smith’s exit is likely to springboard Brisbane hooker Andrew McCullough into a Queensland Origin debut in the June 6 series opener at the MCG, while Jake
Granville of the Cowboys could be another option. Darius Boyd, Billy Slater or Greg Inglis are the most likely candidates to take over the captaincy, however Boyd has battled form and fitness this season. - AAP
Penrith second-rower Corey Harawira-Naera knows the awkward dynamics of the Cleary household better than most. So much so, he found himself in the crosshairs of the strange situation just a week after his NRL debut last year. Unsigned by the Panthers, Harawira-Naera visited Ivan Cleary about a possible move to the Wests Tigers for 2018, only to bump into his own teammate Nathan Cleary. “I was hoping not to see him because I knew it would be a bit awkward,” Harawira-Naera said. “He had a dig at me when I got back to training the next day and tried to get the boys to get onto me about it.” - AAP

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The shortcut will be obvious – someone will point to it with a shiny sign. The long and viable path won’t be obvious, but if you’re internally quiet, then you’ll sense it. You’ll have to clear some brush to get started. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): In your mind, it’s not enough for you to just show up. You want to show up and know that they feel you there. You want to show up in such a way as to make sure that people will miss you when you don’t. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Efficiency is partly about good planning and mostly about dealing well with people. When people feel part of the team, they’ll place a high priority on what needs to be accomplished for the win. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You have someone powerful on your side, rooting for you to do whatever it takes for maximum vitality – and that someone is you. All success will spring from taking excellent care of yourself. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Should you knock yourself out to win over the sceptical powers that be, or should you run the other direction from what’s a no-win situation? Choose the action that will make you feel best about yourself. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The magic and momentum will begin when your goals match up nicely with the goals of another. If this isn’t happening, it’s not you; it’s the situation. Keep moving and looking for a match. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Your sensitivity to diet is turned up today, and you’ll be more affected than usual by the foods you eat. Make a plan and stick to it no matter what. This will bring you peace and optimum results. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Being able to control your state of mind will be huge. To determine the state most suited to the job and then have the self-mastery to move your head there... pretty much guarantees success today. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The least powerful people are the ones who believe they are small. They’ll show this by being nasty to underlings. Truly important people treat everyone with respect. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The situation you’re in today is not a zero-sum game. People need what you’re offering just as much as they need what others are offering. You’re in direct competition with no one. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Some look at everything as a “you” problem or a “me” problem. If you can create a team mentality, then everything will turn into “we,” and you’ll all get a lot accomplished. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): People don’t want to be told what to do. They don’t even want to be told what other people did to create success. People just want acknowledgement today. Share a kind word, and they’ll be all ears.

Four Ashburton karate exponents will spend this weekend competing against the best Oceania has to offer. JION International Karate Dojo Ashburton’s chief instructor, Sensei Thorsten Windhorst will compete in his first Oceania competition in eight years, while three of his young charges – Taylah Burrowes, Kyle Cabangun and Charles Savage – will also be in action. Burrowes and Cabangun are entered in the Oceania Championships’ Cadet Kumite divisions (14-15 year) female 54kg and male 57kg respectively, while Savage is entered in
the Oceania Cup in the men’s 14 years and under Kumite, in the 40kg division. Windhorst will compete in the veteran 45-55 year, 84kg Kumite division. They will compete as part of the New Zealand national karate team and all four have a clear goal heading into the championships, which will run from Friday through until Sunday in Auckland – they all want to win gold. They’ve all got potential too, with Burrowes and Cabangun both having won bronze medals at last year’s national championships, while Windhorst was national champion for four years running before sustaining a knee injury which kept him

out of competition for some time. Windhorst’s last Oceania Championships appearance was in Tahiti in 2010 and this will be his first competition since 2014. Burrowes, Savage and Windhorst have all competed for New Zealand before, but for Cabangun this will be his first experience representing his country. Savage won bronze in the 10-11 year old category at the Commonwealth Championships in India in 2015. The Oceania Championships has attracted a field of 214 with most athletes coming from New Zealand and Australia, and the rest coming from French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Fiji.
The Oceania Cup, which is where Savage is competing, will see a massive field of 292 kids competing. Once they’re home their attention will turn to the JION dojo’s annual Shotokan Championships which will be held on May 27 at the Tinwald Memorial Hall. A karate tournament for children aged five to 13 years, the tournament has attracted entries from Shotokan clubs from Akaroa, Christchurch and Timaru, as well as a number from the host dojo. In all 70 youngsters will be competing across 14 divisions, ranging from beginner white belts to more experienced brown belts.
