■ AGRICULTURAL SHOW
Clean sweep for Coplands BY HEATHER CHALMERS
HEATHER.C@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mark Copland and family of Dromore achieved an extraordinary clean sweep at this week’s New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch, winning virtually all the combined wool breed classes with their border leicester sheep, culminating in the supreme wool breed sheep exhibit. The family had never previously won the award. “It’s huge,” Copland said. “It was great for the breed and great for the family. It all came together.” To further cap off a great day, Mark and his wife Robyn also won show ambassador of the year for being long-time supporters and exhibitors. Competing against the best of the other wool breeds, including merino, halfbred, corriedale and black and coloured sheep, the Coplands won prize after prize. A judge noted when awarding the Coplands the prize for best wool breed pair that while merino wool was worth a lot more, he couldn’t fault their animals for structural soundness and even-ness of fleece. The Coplands, who farm and exhibit as Westmere Farming Compa-
ny, were long-time exhibitors at the show. Of the 12 sheep they took to this year’s show, all received prizes. “I am the third generation of the family showing sheep and our son Hugh is the fourth generation,” Mark Copland said. “My grandfather started the flock in 1932.” As well as winning supreme wool breed sheep exhibit and best pair, they also took home the Food and Fibre Trifecta, for showing the best three ram hoggets of a wool breed. In a rare double, they also won both the Miss Canterbury best shorn ewe hogget and the best wool breed ram hogget. Copland said they had won the Miss Canterbury twice before, “but a long time ago”. Awarding the prize for best wool breed ram hogget, judge Hamish Mackay of Gore said he couldn’t say enough about that ram. “He carries himself well with a tremendous fleece of wool, which has a beautiful lustre to it.” The previous day, Westmere Farming won supreme champion border leicester with their champion border leicester ram. They also won reserve champion ram and champion ewe for the breed. As well as their sheep stud, the Coplands also run a commercial
flock of first cross border romney ewes. “We have 2500 ewes, including the border leicester stud of 200 ewes, which is small by comparison with what we used to have. When I left school, we had 6000 ewes. It was dryland then, but now we have irrigation,” Copland said. Since developing irrigation from bores 15 years ago on three-quarters of the farm, the farming operation had become more diversified. As well as sheep, they now also have crop, including potatoes, and finish 1000 beef cattle. Border leicester rams were sold to commercial farmers to put across merino and romney flocks. The breed was also known for its high lustre wool. The former captain of the New Zealand dog trialing team, Copland said he still participated in the sport, but now only in autumn. Another Mid Canterbury sheep breeder to perform well at the show was Stuart Sinclair of Wakanui, who was awarded supreme champion ram in the cheviot and south suffolk classes. He also won supreme champion suffolk in partnership with another Mid Canterbury breeder, Johnny Miles of Lyndhurst.

Fifth time lucky on operation waiting list BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
If there’s any message Colleen Linwood can give to people waiting for elective surgery it’s that they should never give up, never lose hope of making it to the top of the waiting list. Today Colleen is on the road back to good health. She’s 11 days out from hip replacement surgery, walking with just one crutch and, for the first time in many years, she’s relatively pain free. Her road to surgery was long – five years and in spite of setback after setback she believed that one day her name would be top of the waiting list. Initially she was told she was too
young for a hip replacement, then she was too heavy. She shed kilos, made it onto the list and then the health sector was hit by strike after strike. Each one pushed patients further down the waiting list. Behind those delays, not just for her but for hundreds of others, there are as many human stories, she said. Colleen’s fifth surgery date was November 5. She was optimistic, but sceptical, however, for her it was a case of fifth time lucky. “Today I’m feeling pretty good, really well. The whole thing was a huge success and the team up there at Burwood were absolutely amazing,” she said.
Left – For Colleen Linwood, the long wait for a hip replacement is finally over.
Complete Local Care Since 1982
The downside is knowing she’ll be back in surgery in six months’ time to have her other hip replaced. She’s keeping her fingers crossed this one won’t be a five year journey. “Today I’m great, but it’s been a pretty awful and pretty long journey that no one should have to make,” Colleen said. “I just want people to know that they need to keep fighting, they need to hang in there and they will get their surgery. Hanging in there was well worth it for me.” Today she says there’s nothing more exciting than knowing she can now think about planning ahead, looking at what she wants to do with her life. In brief Cat rescued It seems there is no job too big or too small for Mid Canterbury’s dedicated firefighters. Yesterday Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade members were called to rescue a cat in a tree on Spaxton Street at 11.12am, and spent just over one hour at the scene. Chief Brent Anderson said most of the time was spent waiting to see if said moggy would climb down of its own accord. It did not, so it was deemed the best course of action would be a quick squirt of water from a fire hose. This worked wonders, as the cat then fell out, with all of its lives intact. “It was good as gold,” Anderson said.

Van flips off scenic route By Susan sandys

Eight international students from Christchurch were lucky to escape uninjured after crashing their rental van while travelling south on Inland Scenic Route 72 yesterday. Skid marks on the road about five kilometres south of Staveley suggested the driver had veered off the road to the left, before over-correcting. The van had plummeted down a bank on the opposite side of the road, flipping onto its side and around to face the opposite direction in a creek. The accident happened about midday. Timaru resident Blake Wills came across the scene shortly after, having just come around a bend behind the car about 100 metres away. “I came around the corner and saw a puff of gravel,” Wills said. He pulled over and put his hazard lights on, and rushed to the scene. But in the meantime two other motorists had stopped and one of them stood on top of the upright driver’s side of the car to help the tourists climb out of the driver’s

side windows. The other motorist was phoning emergency services, but as the rescuers established no-one
was injured, the operator told her emergency services would not need to respond. Wills, who works in the electri-
cal industry and had a high-vis jacket on, disconnected the van’s battery and checked there was no leakage of fuel or oil into the creek. He remained at the scene, while his passenger apprentice used their car to drive four of the crash victims to Methven so they could arrange transport home to Christchurch. Wills phoned a company in Christchurch to organise retrieval of the vehicle, and planned for the remaining four tourists to travel back to the city with the company. At about 1.30pm he was still at the scene, waiting until the company arrived, as he did not want to leave the four passengers on their own sitting on the side of the road. He was dismayed at the lack of response from emergency services, as communicated to him by the female motorist, but was considering phoning star triple five. He was relieved the occupants, who had told him they were on the way to Twizel for the long weekend, were all okay. “I think they were lucky to get out of it,” he said.
As the busiest time of year for postal deliveries approaches, police are warning people to remember to take steps to ensure that their parcels are safe. Coming into Christmas there are more parcels being delivered, and more chances for your presents to be stolen. Thieves will take any opportunity to steal, and parcels left on front doorsteps or in apartment building common areas are an easy target, a police spokesperson said. Police advice includes getting packages delivered to a place where someone will be home to receive them, or to a work address.
Car crashes off cliff A car carrying five people was yesterday driven off the road down a bank in Port Levy, Canterbury, shortly after midday. Two people were seriously injured, and three others moderately injured, police confirmed. The single-car accident occurred on Port Levy-Pigeon Bay Road around 50km east of Christchurch. - NZME
Dally denied parole Paul Dally – the man who killed Karla Cardno in 1989 – has again been refused parole. Dally snatched Karla as she was cycling home in Lower Hutt in May 1989. Dally, now 58, will have to spend at least another 18 months in prison before he can be re-assessed, a Parole Board decision released yesterday says. That decision reveals he did not seek parole at his November hearing. Dally has been in prison for 29 years. - NZME

■■FIRE SCIENCE
Looking into fire’s heart By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
As bushfires rage across the Tasman, New Zealand fire scientist Grant Pearce sees more than just the damage they are doing. The Ashburton College alumnus researches the factors leading up to such blazes, as well as the dynamics caused by them once they are under way. Based in Christchurch as a member of Scion’s rural fire research group, Pearce was the go-to expert this week for the Science Media Centre. Pearce may well be a scientist, but he is more likely to be donning a jacket with reflectors than a white coat. In fact, he gets paid to do what would be an arsonist’s dream, that is light fires and then watch them burn. He told the Guardian these fire experiments occur on small blocks of land, after gaining permission from the owner, for example a farmer who wants to burn off an area. He is also involved in training and teaching firefighters about fire behaviour, and has been to Australia and North America to support fire operations and fire experiments. He said he had never quite known what sort of career he might get into after studying environmental science at university, but had never dreamed of going into fire research. After growing up in Ashburton and leaving Ashburton College in 1984, Pearce attended the University of Otago, completing a Master of Science degree in Physical Geography. It had turned out to be not only an exciting career choice, but a rewarding one as well. “It’s rewarding in terms of contributing to public safety and protecting firefighters,” he said. His most recent brief has been using his experience and knowledge to take a look into the menacing heart of the Australian fires. For the Science Media Centre gathering expert information for distribution to journalists, he said the fires across the Tasman were
spreading erratically and rapidly, their intensity producing towering pyrocumulus smoke columns which extended many kilometres into the atmosphere. “The fires interact with the upper atmosphere, creating their own weather and often over-riding the other factors of terrain and surface winds that would normally drive the behaviour of smaller fires. Rising rapidly due to high-intensity burning, these convection columns can even form thunderstorms, producing lighting which can start more fires,” he said. Suppression of such fires was difficult if not impossible, and it was often too unsafe to put firefighters on the ground ahead of them. Any water, made scarce by drought, was quickly evaporated by the intense heat before it could wet the vegetation, even in in the case of large water-bombers dropping tens of thousands of litres at a time. The fires were not a good sign for New Zealand in the face of climate change. Research had shown that fire risk in New Zealand would likely increase, with more severe-fire-weather days in many parts of the country, as well as fire seasons starting earlier and lasting longer. “This means the potential for not only more fires, but more larger fires exhibiting the sorts of extreme fire behaviour seen in Australia and California, and locally in the 2019 Nelson/Tasman and 2017 Port Hills wildfires,” Pearce said. “We are already seeing an increasing trend in New Zealand in human impacts from wildfires, especially in the rural-urban interface where urban development meets rural vegetation fuels, with more homes being destroyed or damaged, and greater numbers of people being evacuated.” While not having as severe a climate or as much expansive bush areas as Australia and America, New Zealand still had a wildfire problem in many areas, such as Marlborough and the east coast of both islands.

■■ ASHBURTON ART GALLERY
Artworks wow on opening night By Sue Newman

Debbie Lambert has been capturing some of New Zealand’s most spectacular landscapes on canvas for more than 30 years, and on Friday night she opened an exhibition that represents more than two years of her work. Lambert has a collection of large landscape paintings hanging in the Ashburton Art Gallery and each represents places dear to her heart. She was invited to stage a solo exhibition two years ago and decided she would focus on a series of large works. Opening night was the first time she had an opportunity to see those works hung and admitted she was pretty overwhelmed. In opening the exhibition, gallery curator Shirin Khosraviani said the collection of paintings demonstrated very clearly Lambert’s love of wild and remote places. Each work in the Nature Revealed collection was a testimony both to inspiration the artist drew from the environment and her exceptional skill in capturing
the spirit of those places, she said. “Her paintings are on a generous scale and celebrate the immense beauty she finds in nature.” With the exhibition open, Lambert told the large opening night gathering the stories behind each work. The locations ranged across remote areas on the West Coast, Nelson and close to home in Mid Canterbury’s back country. The scale of each painting meant it was impossible to paint on location and Lambert said she took dozens of photos of each area to use as inspiration when working in her home garage studio. “Nature for me provides my soul food,” she said. Seeing her paintings hanging in the gallery was “awesome” she said, as they were part of her journey as an artist that ranged across 30 years and an awful lot of brush strokes. Nature Revealed is the first of the gallery’s three summer openings that will be open to view over the summer holiday period.

■■ ADVANCE ASHBURTON
Supporting the community Over the past year the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation has given more than $590,000 to the community in grants from income earned on its growing community fund. It will celebrate this achievement with the community later this month during its annual meeting. This event will see a strong line-up of speakers, including Professor Paul Spoonley from Massey University, Ross Preece – Principal of Ashburton College, and Jared Corbett – past recipient of an Advance Ashburton scholarship. The foundation, which was established in 2003, is an independent, not-for-profit local organisation, and donations received are invested and the income earned is distributed back to the community according to the wishes received at the time the donation is made. Its unique but simple model has enabled the Ashburton District to receive more than $590,000 in distributions over the last financial year. Advance Ashburton is proud to be able to support initiatives and pro-
jects in music, health, education, youth, elderly, environment, social wellbeing, scholarships, heritage and more. As the foundation is a fund that will benefit our community forever, this year’s theme is future focused. In particular, where does new and inspirational thinking come from, what will emerge with the changing face of the workplace and why we need to change the way in which we educate our youth. The annual meeting will be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on November 28 at 5.30pm. Seats are limited and people wishing to attend should either email info@advanceashburton.org.nz or phone Sandi 027 577 5875. This event is open to all, there is no charge and refreshments will be available at its conclusion. Right - Professor Rangahau Spoonley Paul is one of the guest speakers at this year’s Advance Ashburton annual meeting.

Two dead in shooting AP A 16-year-old student pulled a gun from his backpack and opened fire on classmates at a high school north of Los Angeles yesterday, striking five people before turning the gun on himself. Two students, a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, died at a hospital. The shooter, whose attack unfolded in front of surveillance cameras, survived his self-inflicted gunshot wound and was in grave condition at a hospital, authorities said at a news conference shortly before noon local time. Police said he turned 16 yesterday. The shooting victims who survived include a 14-year-old girl, a 15-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy. The incident unfolded in the quad of the school. Deputy Armando Viera of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting was reported at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita. People hurt in the incident were taken to Henry Mayo Hospital in Valencia. The hospital reported that a female patient had died. Two other male patients were in critical condition and a third male patient was
in good condition. It was not clear if the injured people suffered gunshot wounds. During and after shootings, people are often injured as they attempt to flee. Two female students told CNN in an interview that they heard five shots, one initial bang followed by four other rapid shots. Voices shaking, the girls told CNN that students still inside the school were hiding in closets and texting updates to friends who had already made it outside. Three female students told CNN on air that they were by the library at the school and saw a wave of classmates running from the quad. They began running, too, leaving campus through a gate and running to the first house they could find in a nearby neighborhood, the girls said. They also heard five shots, and said they could immediately tell the bang they heard was not the sound of a popping balloon or a falling binder. They said it was a “gut feeling”. “It took us a minute to process that we needed to run,” one of the female students said on air. The girls said they knew it wasn’t a drill because the school holds drills only once the school day has started. The mayhem
unfolded as students were still making their way to class. Another student told KABC in an interview that she and other students huddled in an office when gunfire opened. The student said she texted her father to say, “I love you”. Saugus High, on a campus lined with palm trees, has about 2400 students, according to federal data. Earlier this year, a half-dozen students were detained on charges stemming from violent threats they posted online, the Los Angeles Times reported. Television footage showed students evacuating the school and emergency vehicles responding, with people in gurneys being loaded into ambulances on the school campus. President Donald Trump was monitoring the situation, according to Judd Deere, a White House spokesman, on Twitter. This is at least the seventh shooting at a US school this year, according to a Washington Post analysis. More than 230,000 schoolchildren have been exposed to gun violence in their schools since the shooting at Columbine High in Colorado in 1999.
Teenage pop sensation Benee was the big winner at Thursday night’s Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, scooping all four awards she was nominated for. The 19-year-old Aucklander won best solo artist and single of the year for her platinum debut Soaked. She also claimed best pop artist and breakthrough artist for her latest album Fire on Marzz. In a series of endearingly offbeat acceptance speeches Benee – real name Stella Bennett – swore, apologised for swearing and encouraged young people to follow their dreams, referring to her dropping out of university after two weeks. - NZME

Pink takes a break Pink has revealed she will be taking a break from music to focus on her family. The American superstar will take a break for at least a year to focus on her family, which includes husband, Carey Hart, daughter Willow, 8, and son, Jameson, 2. “We did two and a half years of [music], and Willow’s back in school now,” she said. ”Jameson’s going to start preschool soon. It’s kind of the year of the family. And Carey has a lot going on as well. He’s super supportive, he follows me around the world and now it’s his turn.” Pink appeared on the red carpet in the US with her family again this week at the Country Music Awards in Nashville. - AP

Mother of twins stands by her husband AP Marissa Rodriguez is still grieving the death of her 1-year-old twins, who died after her husband left them locked in a hot car for eight hours. She says she stands by her husband, war veteran Juan Rodriguez, who called her in a panic once he realised he had left the children in the car for that long. The father forgot the children in the car, in 42-degree heat, in July this year. The twins died of heatstroke. The grieving mum told TV host Dr Phil the dad mistakenly believed he had dropped them off at daycare, on his way
to work. She says she wants other parents to learn from the tragedy that struck her family. In a clip promoting the Dr Phil interview, she described the moment her husband called her at work to give her the news. “My husband called me, I was working. The first call was about 4 or so. “He told me, ‘All right, it’s your turn to pick up the kids’. “He was going to a military event and he generally brought the kids to daycare, but we switched on who picked them up,” she explained. “I said, ‘No problem, I’ll pick them up. I was still working for another hour at least.
“I got on the phone with a client. He called my cellphone back again and I just ignored it because I was working. “I realised he had left me a voicemail, which he doesn’t normally do. “He called again. I got off the phone and I heard him say that they were gone.” In a previous interview, she explained why she is standing by her husband. “I need him by my side to go through this together,” she said. “Though I am hurting more than I ever imagined possible, I still love my husband. “He is a good person and great father, and I know he would’ve never done anything to hurt our children intentionally.”
Auckland show for Tool Art metal outfit Tool have announced that they are on their way to play one show in Auckland next year. The good news is that fans won’t have to wait long to see the hard rocking Californians perform. The band will take to the Spark Arena stage on Friday, 28 February, 2020. Tickets for their single New Zealand show go on sale on Friday, November 22, at 2pm. This will be Tool’s first visit to these shores in six years. They are touring their acclaimed new album, their fifth, Fear Inoculum, which came a whopping 13 years after their fourth album 10,000 Days. - NZME

faster in the market, and expand our footprint and do more national marketing,” Craig told the Herald. Lord of the Fries plans to open a second store in Wellington next year, then one each in Christchurch and Dunedin, and another in Auckland. “Being in fast food is all about volume. Our business is a purpose-driven business, we want to have impact in the plant-based world, we want to change people’s eating habits from meat-based protein to plant-based protein,” Craig said. “From a business perspective, the more stores we have the greater the volume and the better we can increase our profitability by lowering costs.” A bigger store footprint would also enable the company to move production of its core ingredients such as its burger patties and nuggets to New Zealand, Craig said. It is currently in talks with a local iwi company to use its hemp-infused patties.
Vegan fast-food chain Lord of the Fries is raising capital to fund its store expansion, including opening its first outlets in Christchurch and Dunedin. Lord of the Fries, which opened its first restaurant in New Zealand three years ago, currently operates four local stores – two in Auckland, one in Wellington and one in Queenstown. The Australian fast-food operator will on Monday launch an equity crowdfunding campaign on PledgeMe, hoping to raise $2 million. Up to 2 million shares will be on offer at $1 per share, with a minimum investment of $250. Director Bruce Craig, whose holding company Chip Lord New Zealand Limited holds the master franchise for Lord of the Fries in New Zealand, said crowdfunded capital would be used to fuel its expansion throughout the country. “We want to open four more stores, we want to move a little bit

Lord of the Fries has been valued at $6m. The company forecasts turnover of $3.42m in the current financial year. Demand for plant-based food is booming worldwide, with “vegan meat” increasingly becoming mainstream. In May, plant-based burger firm Beyond Meat listed on the Nasdaq – its shares more than doubled in its debut year. Other fast-food operators in the market such as Burger King, Burger Fuel, Domino’s and Hell Pizza have in recent months introduced plant-based options to their menus following growing consumer interest in plant-based foods for their presumed health and environmental benefits. Lord of the Fries claims it was first to sell the Beyond Burger in New Zealand. More than 1.5 million New Zealanders are eating less meat annually, according to a Colmar Brunton report, with one in three Kiwis reducing their meat consumption.

Long road Lyme disease and ME sufferer Nikki Tyrrell has had a year of mixed fortunes, benefiting hugely from treatment in Cyprus but experiencing a recent setback with a garage fire. Susan Sandys reports.
N
ikki Tyrrell will never forget 2019. It is the year that she made huge milestones in the long road to wellness that she has been struggling on for a long time. Nikki returned from seven months in Cyprus in September, at the YandC MedInstitute Clinic which offers targeted treatment for ME and Lyme disease

sufferers. She benefited from the clinic’s holistic approach with specialist treatments including 10-pass ozone therapy under hyperbaric pressure, which is able to kill Lyme and co-infections, combined with gut repair, nutrition, healing the limbic system and rebuilding the immune system. Before she left she was house-bound and spent much of her life barely able to walk, and having seizures on a regular basis. Her brain and body was riddled with inflammation from infections, later evidenced by scans in Cyprus, and she suffered extreme pain levels and migraines daily. “Since treatment, scans of those same areas show that the inflammation has gone. My pain levels are hugely reduced, I have not had a single seizure. I can now speak and hold conversations as opposed to being non-verbal and communicating by writing, I can have visitors on a semi-regular basis and I no longer use a walking frame or wheelchair in the house,” Nikki said. She resorts to her wheelchair for longer outings, and is enjoying being able to be out of the house almost every day for short periods, such as being taken out for a drive, visiting her parents, or assisted outings such as to the park. These are all activities she is building on as part of her rehabilitation. “Some days I get frustrated at how painfully slow it can be, but then I look at where I started from and realise just how far I have come,” Nikki said. Her 2019 success story was marred recently with a setback in the form of a garage fire, leading to the loss of much-needed equipment. About 1am in the early hours of October 31 she heard a series of explosions coming from the adjoining garage, so fled from her bedroom and dialled 111.

to wellness Firefighters were able to contain the fire, but the garage was gutted. Gym equipment, which she was planning to use as part of her rehabilitation and had just moved into the garage, was destroyed, as well as a hyperbaric chamber. It was the loss of the latter which was the most heart-wrenching for Nikki, as she used the chamber about five times per week as an integral part of her recovery, benefiting from the therapeutic process of breathing in pure oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. Fire investigators found the cause of the blaze had been a faulty freezer. Despite the losses, which also included some sentimental items, Nikki is determined to look on the bright side and is grateful to the brave firefighters who saved her home, as well as the fact she was well enough to be able to escape and alert emergency services. Nikki is awaiting insurance assessments for the hyperbaric unit, and hopes it can be either replaced or rebuilt. She has been able to hire a portable soft-shell unit for two weeks, and is urgently seeking another portable one that she can either temporarily loan or hire. Despite the blaze, it is the positive that Nikki
is determined to focus on, and more than anything else what she wants to get across in this article is her gratitude to the many Mid Cantabrians who have supported her this year. A group of friends co-ordinated a fundraising drive, establishing a Givealittle page and holding a concert and auction, altogether raising more $30,000. “It really kept me going during the harder times in Cyprus, knowing that all of Ashburton was behind me and helped to get me there in the first place,” she said. Nikki has had a couple of acute infections since her return and her Cypriot medical specialists advise that the journey to recovery will be a long one, but she is determined to follow their advice to avoid stress and rebuild slowly. “There is a long, long way to go, they never promised a full or immediate cure, it takes time,” she said.
Nikki Tyrrell is back, and has a much better quality of life than previously.

OUR VIEW
Under the surface, farming is in crisis I
t’s often said that while something might look calm and under control on the surface, peel back one layer and the true picture’s revealed. We’re all good pretenders. We like the world to think we’ve got our patch under control, got life mastered. Success – or the appearance of success – is burned deep within our DNA. But continuing to show that perfect surface to the world while your foundations are crumbling means the world doesn’t see the true picture, doesn’t get what’s actually going on. And so it is with our farming industry. For as long as farmers have farmed, they’ve been viewed by those who don’t, as having advantages in life. Non-farmers look
at farm families, look at the large tracts of land they own and think they’ve got it made. What they don’t see is the hidden side of farming – the long hours, the crippling debt, the reliance on fickle commodity prices that mean financial uncertainty and today rafts of new regulations that for some will mean the end of their farming line. A couple of decades back farmers largely got on with growing things, selling things and hoping
to make a dollar at the end of the day. They’ve always had massive debt on a scale that would choke a townie, but if they’ve been diligent farmers they’ve managed to balance their books and have a bit left over. That was before the world changed. Today’s farmers are under huge pressure from all quarters. No longer is their patch their patch. Virtually every day new rules, new regulations around land and water use and new requirements for record keeping land on their kitchen table. Many of those requirements are environment linked and largely they’re’ necessary. It’s not just farmers who have stuffed up our environment, however. We’ve all had a part to play
and we need to own that, but it’s farmers who’ve become the whipping boys for our collective abuse. Give the rural sector credit. They’ve taken the onslaught of new regulations and requirement on the chin – on the surface. What those outside the farm gate don’t see is the impact each of those has on both workload and bottom line. Our farmers are under immense pressure from all quarters and that’s showing through in mounting stress levels. Farming is in crisis, have no doubt about that. And if farming’s in crisis, urban Ashburton will ultimately be too. What farmers need is not just community support and understanding, they also need the people at the top, our MPs, to stop bagging and start batting for
them. Take Shane Jones. Farmers are understandably upset about the amount of productive farm land being taken over by forestry. They’re so upset they’ve marched on Parliament. And what did Forestry Minister Shane Jones do? No sympathy there, in his mind farmers were just rednecks who were never going to win. Unbelievable. It’s not the first time he’s shot his mouth off in public situations. This man is on a power trip that will never win him friends. A political divide is rapidly opening up over the growing pressure in the farming sector and every one of us needs to be aware that if the lid blows on the farm the fall-out always hits the town.

The foolish warthog S
hane Jones is an ignorant fool. His response to farmers bringing their voice to parliament was akin to watching a warthog have afternoon tea with the Queen. Is it a coincidence that whenever I think of warthogs, I think of Shane Jones? Shane Jones is ignorant for displaying behaviour of a minister with the cabinet responsibilities of infrastructure, forestry and regional economic development. His behaviour to respond to booing to his speech was to sing and then insult the farmers by calling them rednecks. He is a fool for not realising the opportunity he had in front of him to listen to the very real concerns and issues farmers have with policy that is impacting their lives. Only an ignorant fool would stand there and take, personally, the frustration vented from the farmers. Is his ego so fragile or arrogant that he cannot handle democracy in action? If you google the New Zealand First Party (https://www. nzfirst.org.nz/about) – of which Shane I’m-the-big-man Jones is a significant representative of, you will see the leader Winston Peters standing in front of the party bus. So what you may ask? Well you have to see the very large image on that bus. On the NZ First bus, along with the name of the party and
Peter Livingstone OUT OF SCHOOL
the slogan ‘Together, For New Zealand’ is a photograph of a tractor working a field! Now, I’m no higher order thinker like Shane Jones, but I’m pretty sure that farmers drive tractors and do stuff on the land. I’m pretty sure that the photo was used to appeal to the heartland of NZ while this bus was being driven around remote forestry blocks while Shane Jones was on holiday and shooting off an automatic rifle. It was probably driven up and down Ninety Mile Beach while Shane Jones was sitting on a deck chair as some of his junior lackeys gathered kai moana ready for him to host another big feed on Waitangi Day. Only an ignorant fool would not grasp the significance of the occasion when farmers have travelled across New Zealand to personally deliver the message that is their democratic right to do. This is the minister for regional development telling people from the regions they are like hog-riding, monster truck loving, cousin-marrying,
Shane Jones shotgun-toting, tooth-missing, uneducated labourers. As a leader of a school I have many decisions to make, many opinions to consider, many meetings to attend and many conversations to listen to. I like to find solutions that work for all parties concerned, but there are times when either my decisions or actions are not what people wanted. I would have many opportunities to be derogatory in my language and treat those who come to see me with disdain, but of course I was not raised as a feral caveman. I choose to extend courtesy and respond with affirmative words, not name calling and antagonism. Shane Jones showed what he truly is – a fringe dwelling loudmouth. In the last election he came
third for the electorate of Whangarei. It was won by the National Party with a winning margin of over 10,000 votes, and he came third. So this third placegetter from the town of Whangarei, whose party uses the image of a farmer at work on their campaign bus, stands outside parliament and calls farmers rednecks. So what next? If ever the prime minister needed a moment to flex her political muscle and demonstrate that she does care about all New Zealanders, she would shut him down, swiftly and with the decisiveness of a warthog eating pavlova. Why do I keep thinking of warthogs when I think of Shane Jones? Anyway, this childish outburst needs to be publicly rebuked by the leader and farmers need to know that their very real concerns will be fully listened to, and derided by an ignorant fool. How to decide right from wrong A
s I write this column, Parliament was due to vote on the Euthanasia Bill. The debate has raised issues such as; how to decide right or wrong, and the relationship between legal/illegal and moral/ immoral. Parliament can pass laws and make the illegal legal, but they can never make the immoral moral. While Parliament ought to ensure a good match between legality and morality they don’t always succeed. If Parliaments have the power to determine legality – who then has the power to determine morality? One answer is “the people” – but which people? Maybe a simple majority – what most people decide is right must be right. Surely we can see the problems with this one. If 51 per cent of the population
Rev David Bayne
CHRISTIAN COMMENT
vote to discriminate against people with red hair (apologies to all my ginga friends and relatives) and deny them the same access to food and medicine as the rest of us, would that make it right? Perhaps you want a larger majority – but would a 75 per cent vote make such discrimination right? How about if we don’t trust the majority viewpoint – and history gives us good reasons to suspect that majority opinions can get it horribly wrong. Perhaps leave the decision on right or wrong in the hands of the experts – people we trust to know about these things. Who gets to choose the experts
– do we do that, or they choose themselves (because obviously they have the expertise to choose the right people I.e. themselves). I think we can see problems here too. When we ask “Who decides?”, we are also asking “Do people make things right or wrong, or do they recognise things as being right or wrong?” If right or wrong is simply established by decision making, whether by majority rule or by experts, then right and wrong are completely flexible. They have no permanent meaning and may have opposite meanings as time passes. Then there is no right or wrong, just current preference, which is no basis for either a stable or happy world. However, if right and wrong are permanent, something to be recognised, and not made up, then we have a solid foundation upon
which to build both individual lives and societies. Jesus Christ said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” What is true, right, good and moral is revealed by God through Jesus Christ and recorded for us in the Bible. Free from the mob rule of bare majorities, the tyranny of experts and the self defeating attempts to decide for ourselves, we have a sure and certain knowledge given to us. Whether boomer or millennial, rich or poor, brown or white, male or female, we have a common source of certain knowledge. If you have never done so before, I would challenge you to read through the Gospel of John and consider the issue of how to decide right from wrong. Rev David Bayne Grace Presbyterian Church

Ashburton girl Mel Puckett will get to take the next step in her rugby career this week when she jets off to Fiji as part of the Black Ferns Development XV. The Development XV will play three games in Fiji as part an Oceania tournament, playing Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Australia. “I am just really excited to get over there and get out on the field,” she said. “I am sure I will get nervous come game time, but I’m just excited at the moment.” A winger over the past few seasons for Canterbury, Puckett has slowly began a transition to play halfback, and has had one of the best to learn from in team-mate and Black Ferns halfback Kendra Cocksedge. “Kendra said to me I should have a go at halfback, which probably suits with my size,” she said. “She has been really helpful with passing sessions and doing video analysis, and is just someone that is really good to have in your corner.” Puckett will be playing at halfback for the development XV, and said it will be a good opportunity to learn more about the game and playing at the position at a higher level. The Lincoln University student has come in to the Farah Palmer Cup at a boom time for the Canterbury women’s team and for women’s rugby in general, with more games being televised, more professional contracts being handed out and

international tests being played at the same venues at men’s tests. “With more of the games being televised and stuff like that there is a lot more professionalism coming in to the game,” she said. Typically one of the strongest rugby teams in the Christchurch Metro competition, Puckett was given a rugby scholarship to Lincoln University this year, which has been a big help to her game. “The guys have been awesome to train around, they are really good and very competitive and they get behind us as well and come down to support us and watch our games as well,” she said. “It is a really competitive environment.” While after a long season and an overseas tour most people might be looking forward to putting their feet up for the summer, Puckett is the opposite, and will be diving in to nationals for the Canterbury 7s side a week after her return from Fiji. “It is always an honour to represent Canterbury and 7s is a different game, but I will be looking forward to a break after that,” she said. This will be the first time a Black Ferns Development XV side will take part in the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship which includes Fiji, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Australia A. The competition kicks off on 18 November at Churchill Park in Laukota, Fiji.

All Whites fade in Dublin The All Whites have lost after a promising start against the Republic of Ireland, beaten 3-1 after taking the early lead in Dublin yesterday. Ireland coach Mick McCarthy’s focus was centred on his team’s vital European championship qualifying match against Denmark on Tuesday, and there was a fresh look to his squad against New Zealand. Nonetheless, the All Whites were under seige right from the first whistle, and could manage only the rare foray into Irish ter-
ritory. But the New Zealand defence, well marshalled by skipper Winston Reid, held firm as the visitors worked their way back into the match. Still somewhat against the run of play, the All Whites broke through as the half hour mark ticked over. Chris Wood and Ryan Thomas combined to release Liberato Cacace down the left, who unleashed the perfect cross for debutant and Wellington Phoenix team-mate Callum McCowatt to slot home.
The New Zealanders looked set to take a 1-0 lead into half-time, but Ireland equalised on the stroke of half-time, Derrick Williams leaping high to send home a Robbie Brady corner with a bullet header. Reid, who hasn’t been a part of the team for a couple of years, managed a solid first half in his return to competitive football after 18 months on the sideline through injury. He was replaced in the second half by Bill Tuiloma, and the All Whites defence struggled to readjust.
It took just seven minutes from the restart for Ireland to hit the front, Sean Maguire given a little too much room and firing home from long range. Callum Robinson made it three after 75 minutes, making no mistake with a clinical finish of Lee O’Connor’s pinpoint cross. It was the All Whites first game since June last year, and coach Danny Hay’s first match in charge. The team now travel to Vilnius, where they play Lithuania in three days.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hattrick as Portugal cruised to a 6-0 win over Lithuania to move closer to a 2020 European Championship spot yesterday. Pizzi Fernandes, Gonçalo Paciência and Bernardo Silva also scored for the defending European champions, who can qualify with a win in its final Group B match tomorrow at Luxembourg. The rout against last-place Lithuania gave Portugal 14 points, five fewer than group leader Ukraine – which has already qualified – and one point more than third-place Serbia, which beat Luxembourg 3-2. Ronaldo reached 98 career goals with Portugal after converting a penalty kick in the seventh minute, hitting the top corner with a curling shot from outside the area in the 22nd, and finding the net from close range in the 65th. It was the ninth hat trick with Portugal for Ronaldo, and the 55th of his career for club and nation. He has 10 goals in seven qualifying matches. Ronaldo missed a golden chance for his fourth goal when his shot from near the penalty spot sailed over the crossbar in the 68th. He also could have added another in the first half had the referee not reversed a penalty decision in Portugal’s favor after conferring with his assistants. Pizzi scored in the 52nd, Paciência added to the lead in the 56th and Silva got on the board in the 63rd. Portugal had won 5-1 at Lithuania in September.

Kane hat-trick sets England up for big win Harry Kane scored a first-half hattrick as England secured qualification for the 2020 European Championship with a 7-0 victory over Montenegro yesterday in the team’s 1000th game. On a landmark night that saw England field its youngest starting lineup in 60 years, 22-year-old Tammy Abraham came off the bench to open his account for England by completing the rout. England will be back at Wembley during the championship next year. Three group-stage games will be played at the national stadium,
which is one of 12 venues being used by UEFA in 12 cities across Europe. The semi-finals and final are also at Wembley in July 2020. The first task for Gareth Southgate’s side was securing a place in the draw later this month after clinching top spot in qualifying from Group A. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain sent England in front in the 11th minute after being set up by the first of Ben Chilwell’s three assists. The left back’s next two — a free kick and corner – were completed by Kane’s headers.
After Marcus Rashford netted on the half-hour, Kane completed his second consecutive Wembley hat-trick with a close-range finish in the 37th minute to take the captain’s England haul to 31 goals. “Not only does he lead the line for us, provide the goal threat, but also provide opportunities for others and I’ve said before, what an unselfish player he is,” England manager Gareth Southgate said. “But, of course, when those opportunities are there he’s absolutely ruthless.” After a flood of goals in the first half, the Montenegro net was
only breached after the break by Aleksandar Sofranac’s own-goal and Abraham in the 84th after the Chelsea forward came off the bench. “We have struggled in the past against lower-ranked teams who defend in numbers,” Southgate said. “But we’ve got players who can open those teams up and a type of play that can do that.” The 26-year-old Kane overtook retired players Frank Lampard, Alan Shearer, Nat Lofthouse, and Tom Finney in England goal chart as he chases down Wayne
Rooney’s record of 53. Rooney was in the stands as was 1966 World Cup winner Geoff Hurst for the milestone occasion. Raheem Sterling was also forced to watch from the stands after being dropped for an altercation at England’s St George’s Park base on Monday with Joe Gomez. It came a day after they clashed on the field during a high-profile Premier League game between Manchester City and Liverpool But Gomez, the Liverpool defender, was jeered by pockets of supporters when he was brought on as a second-half substitute.

The case for Cane By Chris Rattue
O
ne of the Sams is going to end up as the next captain of the All Blacks. And it has to be Cane not Whitelock if the All Blacks are going to bounce back to the top of the global game. Whitelock would be a good captain. He would lead the team well. But he would be the conservative choice and ultimately, probably, the wrong choice. He’d be a short-term fix that would eventually come to be a problem for the All Blacks towards the end of the World Cup cycle. The new All Blacks coach needs to be bold, see beyond this year and be prepared to invest in the long term and see that Cane comes with the higher probability of being an automatic selection for the duration of the next World Cup cycle. That’s the key to the decision: who is going to go the distance and be a genuine starter for the next four years? At 27, Cane’s career trajectory appears to still have significant
upward momentum. He’s morphed into this damaging tackling force with an under-appreciated ability to snaffle a few critical turnovers per game. It’s a role that isn’t reliant on out and out pace and as such as he gets older and develops more experience, he’ll become more influential. Looking four years down the track, it’s possible to believe Cane will be a better player than he is now. It’s easy to see the upside in his game and whether he wears number seven or number six, it hardly matters – the point to be sure of is that Cane is going to be able to demand inclusion in the All Blacks’ loose trio for the next four years. The question of whether he’s captaincy material has already been answered. He’s led the All Blacks twice – a job he was asked to do because he brings an intensity of purpose that tends to inspire those around him. He’s bright, he’s focused, he’s driven, he’s articulate and he’s fearless. He commands the respect of his peers and if you ask the players who the most instrumental
Sam Cane figure was in lifting them to play Wales in the bronze medal match at the World Cup after being eliminated by England, they would all say Cane. He’s always demanded something from those around him from his earliest days as an All Black, but since he broke his neck last year, that has intensified. He knows he nearly lost everything in South Africa in 2018, that his career was on the line while he waited to hear from the medics whether there was lasting damage. He plays now with a sense of
gratitude that makes him more powerful than he’s ever been and as much as anything else, he’s a gut instinct choice. Whitelock, on the other hand, doesn’t hold the same longevity of appeal. The future isn’t shrouded in mystery as far as the All Blacks locking stocks go. By 2022 the All Blacks are most likely going to be facing a scenario where they have three worldclass locks and no certainty about which two to pick each week. And that’s the issue with making Whitelock captain – gaze into the crystal ball and it is not clear whether he will be a definite starter after this year. Brodie Retallick will be back from Japan in 2021 and presumably available for the All Blacks from July. There is no guarantee, but two club seasons in Japan and a genuine break between the two, should see him restored to somewhere close to his physical peak. Then there is Scott Barrett, who is the volatile element in this future-gazing as based on his current development, he is going to reach the point where he demands
inclusion in the starting team. Give Barrett another two seasons and Whitelock may no longer be an automatic choice, and the last thing the All Blacks need is to be compromised by having to pick their captain when he isn’t necessarily deserving of his spot. Plenty of teams have found themselves there in the past and it hasn’t worked well for them. England had to drop Dylan Hartley in the last World Cup cycle and South Africa got into a real pickle with John Smit in 2011, asking him to play prop so they could find a way to keep him in the team. Whitelock will turn 35 at the next World Cup and why that in itself doesn’t preclude him from being captain, common sense says that he could have played 170 tests by then and just may not have the dynamism that the All Blacks need. To make him captain now would be storing problems for later and the braver decision would be to go with Cane as captain and ask Whitelock to be by his side – a wise old head, providing sage advice and invaluable input.
■■RUGBY
Who wants Reado’s job? NZME Kieran Read’s international retirement has left the All Blacks needing to find a new long-term No 8 when they return to action in 2020. Read, who was New Zealand’s firstchoice No 8 for a decade as he compiled 128 tests, will leave a major hole at the back of the All Blacks scrum, but there are several players who will be putting their hands for the role in Super Rugby. Chris Rattue highlights the top contenders for the All Blacks’ No 8 role. Ardie Savea (Hurricanes) Covered well for Read and might have the inside running for now, but almost by default. He’s a ball of energy rather than the commanding presence All Black No 8s are known for. His speed off the scrum is a weapon, and he has the test experience. Akira Ioane (Blues) Has it all, in theory. But the old All Back regime made it clear where he fails, workrate being the general issue. Ioane is a devastating runner with the perfect size and athleticism for No 8. Has everything to play for – can he find the necessary desperation to convince the selectors? Sam Cane (Chiefs) Will play some No. 8 for the Chiefs but better known as an openside flanker. Would be more of a stop gap whereas the All Blacks will want to build for the 2023 World Cup. His leadership pedigree is made for No. 8, but he lacks lineout height and scrum acceleration. Luke Jacobson (Chiefs) There’s no doubt about his ability and toughness, but concussion concerns remain after he was pulled out of the World
Luke Jacobsen was desperately unlucky to be sent home from Japan.
Cup. A jack of all trades with test No. 8 potential – it will be fascinating to see how new Chiefs boss Warren Gatland deploys him. Shannon Frizell (Highlanders) Showed promising glimpses at the World Cup, and the blindside flanker has a bit of No. 8 experience with the Highlanders. A wonderful athlete with skills, but he has yet to convince as a test warrior. Departed All Black coach Steve Hansen never seemed to have total faith in him. Whetukamokamo Douglas (Crusaders) Douglas has a chance to stand out in a Crusaders pack hit by the departure of All Black stalwarts. Any forward from the Crusaders system is worth test consideration, such is their production line of quality over the years. Niko Jones The St Peters schoolboy superstar from Auckland has initially chosen the sevens route, but his eventual entry into the XV ranks will cause a lot of excitement. Stay tuned.

■■OPINION
Coaching race still wide open By Phil Gifford
T
he current contest for the All Black coaching job feels a little weird, because we haven’t had real competition for the role for 12 years. There are lessons from what’s happened during the selection process in the past, but they don’t give us a great deal of insight into how today’s rugby bosses might jump. Lesson 1: Don’t upset the people who have the power to sack you. The last time the All Blacks finished third at a Rugby World Cup, in 2003, the rush to dump then coach John Mitchell made Usain Bolt look snail-like. The morning after the All Blacks had beaten France, 40-13, in the bronze playoff, NZRU officials held a press conference in a Sydney hotel. Chief executive Chris Moller made it clear Mitchell would struggle to keep his job. “I think there are a number of areas of improvement that are required and certainly we need to lift the bar in a number of areas. “I think all of you would raise some concerns around the areas of the media, probably the interface with the rugby union and possibly some sponsor activity as well.” NZRU chairperson Jock Hobbs said the job might have been advertised even if the All Blacks had won the Cup. Mitchell was already on a plane to Wellington while the Sydney conference was on. Later, on TVNZ’s Sunday programme, he said the comments of Hobbs and Moller were “hard to swallow. “It was like my employer did not support me.” Why was the mood to cut Mitchell adrift so strong? Because he had not so much bitten the hand that fed him as acted as if he’d forgotten it was even there.
In Sydney that morning after the bronze playoff, media were getting off-the-record briefings from NZRU officials about the disconnect between Mitchell and the board. One board member said the stonewall Mitchell often presented to journalists sometimes went up when he sat down for briefings with the union. “He (Mitchell) was asked a harmless sort of question at one meeting, and he said he was sorry, but he wasn’t at liberty to share any details with us. “We’re basically his bloody bosses, and he wouldn’t tell us.” When the contest for the All Blacks coaching job came down to a choice between Mitchell and former Blues, Wales, and Lions coach Graham Henry, Mitchell opened up to the media, and, by extension, the public. A film crew was allowed into his house in Hamilton. He said he had no problem with the media, and expressed shock at any suggestion he was a control freak. “That’s a sad perception. I’m not like that in any manner.” He made the valid point his record as All Black coach, with 83 per cent of games won, was at that time the best of the professional era, where the average winning ratio had been 72 per cent. The campaign worked with the public, but public sentiment didn’t sway the NZRU. Returning from a Friday morning run on December 19, Mitchell found a message on his cell phone to call Hobbs. “I had a feeling it would not go my way.” It didn’t. Graham Henry was the new All Blacks coach. Any parallels with the 2019 situation? None that I can see. Ian Foster is an open, amiable man, as are the other leading candidates, Scott Robertson and Jamie Joseph. I’m hard pressed to think of
three other coaches who would be more well liked by anyone who has ever had dealings with them, and that would certainly include the people in charge at New Zealand Rugby. Lesson 2: Don’t ever let your guard down at the job interview. In 2001, when Wayne Smith was in his second year as All Blacks coach, a 79th minute try by Toutai Kefu saw the Wallabies win 29-26 in Sydney, which made it two losses out of two to the Aussies for the season. But there were also two good wins over the Springboks, and the general expectation was that Smith would keep his job. But 17 days after the gut-wrenching loss in Sydney, Smith was in Wellington for a fateful meeting with a seven-man NZRU review panel. Most coaches, no matter how bad the season has been, know how the review game is played. They offer lofty plans for the year to come, find convoluted excuses for losses, and often offer to sacrifice players and/or fellow coaching staff. They never express doubt. Wayne Smith was different. As a player he was renowned for his honesty. “He wasn’t a big bloke,” his wonderfully laconic Canterbury captain of the 1980s Don Hayes once said, “and he wasn’t much of a tackler. But he never stopped trying to tackle. I kind of admired him for that.” Smith the coach didn’t try to hide in a boardroom either. Facing a panel of four former All Blacks captains – Brian Lochore, Tane Norton, John Graham, and Andy Dalton – plus former All Black Richie Guy, former All Black selector Lane Penn, and NZRU chief executive David Rutherford, he told them he needed more time, because at that moment he was not sure if he wanted to continue as All Blacks coach. “I thought they wanted me to be honest.”
Wayne Smith: Sometimes it just doesn’t pay to be too honest.
Just two days later, when a report from the panel was presented to the NZRU board, Smith’s remark was translated as “he doesn’t want the job.” A week later in the Canterbury union’s boardroom in Christchurch a media conference was called by Smith. He explained that while he had said he “wasn’t sure” he wanted the job on that fateful Tuesday in Wellington, he had not said that he definitely didn’t want it. He was then still wrestling in his mind with the issue. Careful to not offend the men who held his coaching future in their hands, he said he could, however, fully understand how the review panel might have thought he didn’t want it. But now he had no doubts. He was keen to continue. Too late. On October 1 in Wellington Smith, his assistant, Tony Gilbert, Chiefs’ coach John Mitchell, and Crusaders’ coach Robbie Deans were all interviewed for the All Blacks coaching job.
Two days later Smith was sacked, and Mitchell was appointed. Any parallels with the 2019 situation? None that I can see. Foster, Robertson, and Joseph are all veterans of the boardroom process. At the time Smith was facing a panel in 2001, having a panel reporting to the board was new territory. The current crop are all articulate men, who know from experience how this show works. It’s highly unlikely any of them would muse out loud if they had any doubts. Lesson 3: No matter how good a player he is, or how good hearted a bloke, a superstar endorsement is no guarantee of success. In 1991, after the All Blacks had finished third at the World Cup, John Kirwan was asked who he thought should be appointed coach for the next tournament. As open and honest then as he would later be in his campaigning for mental health, he said he thought John Hart would be a good choice. Another genuinely sincere All Black is Beauden Barrett who, when the ‘19 team arrived back at Auckland airport, said: “hopefully we can have some continuity” as he praised the intelligence of Ian Foster as a coach. Any parallels between ‘91 and ‘19? John Hart didn’t get the coaching job, which went to Laurie Mains. Barrett’s praise of Foster, like Kirwan’s backing of Hart, will have done no harm. But it’s unlikely to have any major effect on the final outcome. Our All Blacks coaching contest now remains, as Winston Churchill said in 1939 of Russia, a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Take with a large grain of salt anyone who claims to already be certain about the final choice.

■■ADDINGTON
‘You’ve got to have a go’ Having three runners in today’s Gr.3 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup (3200m) at Riccarton is testament to the success of Peter Corbett and Terrill Charles’ unconventional training methods. The couple prepare a small team from their Mid Canterbury farm, preferring to work their horses on the road rather than the racetrack. The pair, who have been together for some 40 years, will saddle Dee And Gee, Owen Patrick and King Of The Dance in today’s feature staying contest, all three horses sent south because they weren’t showing enough for their previous northern trainers. “Dee And Gee, she couldn’t get warm when we got her. “When we first galloped her, Terrill said: ‘send this bloody thing back’,” Corbett recalled. “We ran her in a four-horse trial and she did nothing, but Tanya Jonker said she’d ride her in her next race. “She bolted in and she hasn’t looked back since.” Dee And Gee has now won five of her 35 starts, among her highlights a second placing in this year’s Gr.3 Wellington Cup (3200m) at Trentham and fourth placing in the Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie as well as winning last season’s Listed Metropolitan Trophy Handicap (2500m) at Riccarton. She ran second in the same race at Riccarton last weekend to set up a shot at today’s New Zealand Cup, for which she is a $5.50 second favourite behind Metropolitan winner Duplicity at $4.50. Last-start Banks Peninsula Cup (2200m) winner Owen Patrick is at $34 while King Of The Dance is at $51. “Having three runners in the Cup isn’t something we’ve really thought about. “It’s just the way it’s worked out,” Corbett said. “King Of The Dance is probably a year away but he’s fronted up on the way through so we thought we’d give him a go. “He’ll be a stronger horse next

Dee And Gee has won five of her 35 starts for Mid Canterbury trainers Peter Corbett and Terrill Charles.
year but we’ll take the chance.” The key to getting to this juncture, Corbett and Charles believe, is their training methods. While the couple are happy to float horses to Timaru for fast work at Phar Lap Raceway, they prefer to vary their training with longer, slower work along the roads of Mayfield and Mt Somers. They have several training blocks in the area, a few that require the horses to walk down a shingle road and cross the Ashburton River as part of the route. “They are working without even realising they are working,” Charles said. “Sometimes a horse can go stale just working at the racetrack and we enjoy training the horses this way just as much as they do. “We’ve got seven or eight different-sized blocks but on average they would work 6km a day and up to 16km on a slow-work day.” Working a team of 10 can be time-consuming for Corbett and
Charles, who used to farm pigs and rear calves on their property before the shift to solely focusing on the racehorses, but both attribute their time with the horses to having remarkable spin-offs for their personal well-being. Four years ago, Charles was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer and given just four and a half months to live. At her last appointment, her specialist told her: “You’ve lasted four years now, there’s no reason you can’t last another four.” Charles stubbornly refuses to let her cancer affect her. “And the horses are a big part of that,” said Corbett, who has overcome health issues of his own in recent years too. Their trio of stayers all go into today’s New Zealand Cup in prime condition too as the trainers aim to improve on a third placing in the race with She’s Insatiable in 2014, that mare having won the Metropolitan at her lead-up start and going on to
place in the Wellington Cup the following year. “She was the one that really got us going,” Charles said. So what can Corbett and Charles hope for today? We hope the three of them can all finish in the top 10. Anything above that is a bonus,” Corbett said. “Owen Patrick won the Banks Peninsula Cup (2200m) well the other day and my gut feeling is he will get the extra distance. But we’re happy with them all. “The one sure thing in racing is that you can’t win a race if you leave the horse at home in the paddock. “You’ve got to back yourself and have a go. “There’s nothing like having a horse go past the post a winner, whether that be in a maiden or in something bigger. “The only difference is we don’t get to celebrate them like we used to. The best we get now is a stop at KFC on the way home.”
A season that started out without any great expectations has turned in to a very memorable one for the connections of Scorcha. The Art Major mare burned away from her opponents in the $30,000 Show Day Futurity at Addington yesterday for their second big win in less than a month. Last month, she won a $10,000 race at Addington and, in doing so, locked up the $10,000 first prize in the Met Mega Series, run over spring. Naturally, having banked $47,500 in seven starts this season, her connections are over the moon. Especially since she is lucky to even be back on the race track. “It’s fantastic, really, and totally unexpected,” said Dave Rankin, who co-owns and co-bred the mare and is also a director of Addington Raceway. “She had an issue this time last year after three starts and we had to put her out. “When she came back, we were just hopeful that we might have a horse that was going to do something. “We are just so thrilled to be here, and to get the opportunity.” Nigel McGrath trains Scorcha and he has been a regular collaborator with Rankin for many years. “Nigel has done us extremely proud. He’s done so well as a trainer.” Meanwhile Chase Auckland followed his impressive fourth in the New Zealand Cup with a fine win in the Woodlands NZ Pacing Free-For-All with Tim Williams at the helm, beating Classie Brigade (John Dunn) and Cruz Bromac (Blair Orange) into the minors. Spankem worked hard but could only get up for fourth, to complete a meagre $146 First4. Wainui Creek (Zac Butcher) was too good for Change Is Good and Sweet Mary in the Nevele R Sires Stakes Southern Classic.

Chasing Riccarton gold
Rare day at the races for Foote
The gold colours of Kevin Hickman will once again be prominent at Riccarton today. The Valachi Downs principal has four horses entered with private trainer Stephen Autridge, with two firm chances in feature races. Showcasing filly Laced With Gold will line-up in the Listed Barneswood Farm Welcome Stakes (1000m) after finishing second and fourth in her two previous starts over 800m at Riccarton last month. “She has continued to please us, but her barrier draw doesn’t,” he said. “She is well and we have put blinkers on just to smarten her up that little bit. “She is working well and is a lovely filly. We are just doing our best to get some black-type for her, which we think we can.” Laced With Gold has been fancied by the TAB, with the Petone bookmakers installing her as a $3.70 favourite for the race over last start winner La Romanee at $3.90. Autridge said the juvenile filly would head for a spell after Saturday and will likely be set towards more black-type targets next year. “She will come back to Matamata and go out to Valachi for a spell. “If she does well she could head towards the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr.2, 1200m).” Autridge is also looking forward to contesting Group One spoils on Saturday with Karalino in the gavelhouse. com New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m). The three-year-old daughter of Zacinto is in good form, winning over 1400m two starts back before finishing runner-up behind Kali in the Gr.3 Barneswood Farm Stakes (1400m) at Ashburton last start. “It was a good run last start, we were

taking ground off her quite quickly,” Autridge said. “We just got held up for a few strides coming around the corner, so if we had got a better run we might have finished a bit closer.” Autridge has taken a lot of confidence from the run and believes she will be right in the finish today. “I am very happy with her,” he said. “She has drawn quite nicely (barrier six) and the distance will be no problem. “We think that she is a really promising filly. She has done nothing but improve, so we believe we will be right in it. We are looking forward to it.” Autridge will also have two runners in the Avon City Ford Premier (1200m), but said last Saturday winner Woodcote Lass is unlikely to start. “It was a very good win by Woodcote Lass last Saturday, but she is very doubtful to run on Saturday, I have chucked her in just in case. “We will make up our mind tomorrow (Friday) morning. “She has had a few runs down there. It was a very good win, they ran a track record, so you don’t just bounce out of them 100 per cent. We thought she had come through it good enough to put her in and have a look.” Autridge will also have Red Chois in the race after she missed out on a start in the Gr.3 Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (1400m). “She didn’t make the Valachi Stakes field on Wednesday, she missed out by one,” Autridge said. “She has been going well. It is the first run at 1400m that I would have given her. She raced over that distance when she was in Europe. She has been placed several times, but she was a non-winner there. So I am looking Laced With Gold is looking good for the Barneswood today. forward to it.”
It’s a dilemma that faces the majority of New Zealand owners and trainers when they have a promising galloper and a flood of overseas money comes knocking. For Cambridge trainer Ben Foote, he has recognised he is firmly in the camp of the latter and therefore it is a rarity for the jumps jockey-turned trainer to have his name associated with a Group One contender. Foote will saddle undefeated filly Travelling Light in today’s Gr.1 gavelhouse.com New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) for good friend Coll MacRury, who bred the daughter of El Rocca out of fivetime winner Cissy Bowen, whom Foote also trained. Travelling Light is a well-supported $3.20 favourite for the Riccarton Park feature on the back of an impressive win in the Gr.3 Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) and earlier victories at Matamata and Taupo. “I consider myself a pre-trainer really now. “It is how I make a living in the main, so to have a horse like this for a really good friend of mine in Coll MacRury is pretty special,” Foote said. “He wouldn’t give it to anyone else to train, which is the only reason why I am training her. “I generally only like to have a couple of horses that I am taking through to the races, so to have a horse of her calibre and in an important race like this is a pretty big deal to me.”

Ferguson cracks test squad NZME He terrorised opposing batsmen at the Cricket World Cup, and now Lockie Ferguson is in line to do the same in the test arena. Ferguson has been called into the Black Caps’ squad to take on England in two tests later this month, as one of five fast bowlers selected in the 15-man squad. The 28-year-old has shone lately with the white ball in the international scene, taking the second-most wickets at the World Cup, but there has always been the ambition from player and team alike to unleash his express pace in test cricket. Ferguson now has that chance, and thoroughly deserves it, having taken 153 first-class wickets at an average of 24.3, including 4-23 last week against Wellington in the Plunket Shield. However, he’ll still be part of a fierce battle for the available seam spots, with test regulars Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Matt
Henry all named in the squad, which doubles as the team to take on Australia in three tests in December and January. Black Caps selector Gavin Larsen deemed the fast bowling surplus as a good problem to have. “Our pace bowling stocks are strong at the moment and we feel Lockie will add another dimension to the picture, and will create some great competition,” Larsen said. “There’s no doubt Lockie has been knocking on the door for a while now and we’re delighted to finally bring him into the test fold. “It’s well documented he has raw pace, but he also possesses a quality bowling skillset and has proved his durability.” The squad to take on England and Australia also includes captain Kane Williamson, who is expected to be fit to play after missing the recent Twenty20 series with a re-occurring right hip injury. “Kane’s made good progress over the past fortnight and we’re delight-
ed to welcome back a player of his class and experience,” said Larsen. Mitchell Santner and Todd Astle’s batting abilities have seen them earn the nod as the spin options over subcontinent standouts Will Somerville and Ajaz Patel, with there likely to be limited overs on offer for the spinners on New Zealand pitches. “There were certainly some tough decisions,” explained Larsen. “We’ve gone with the versatility of Mitchell and Todd who have experience in the conditions we will face over the next few months and will bolster our lower order batting.” The first test against England gets under way in Mount Maunganui on Thursday, with the second starting in Hamilton on the following Friday. Black Caps test squad: Kane Williamson ©, Todd Astle, Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Jeet Raval, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Lockie Ferguson has already proven his pace abilities. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Of all things you could cash out on, you didn’t think that your patience would be the one to bring big dividends. Yet it certainly will today, and you’ll love how it pays. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): It’s easy to see the world as you experience it, and it’s hard to see the world as it is. Your brilliant idea to run your plan by a few friends before you act will counteract this truth. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll live it, and then you’ll tell the story that spreads. It will feel wonderful to be a part of something that benefits so many. It all happens one smile at a time. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It seems like love should come naturally, but it’s actually more complicated and conscious than that. Luckily, you love to learn, and you learn to love. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): People you’ve known a long time have experienced you in many incarnations. That’s because you adjust like a champ. You’ll continue to change your offering to fit the situation at hand. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The truth is that even the most gracious people feel socially awkward from time to time. If you could hear everyone’s internal dialogue, it would probably shock you and comfort you at the same time. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Just when you think a situation has run its course, a new cycle will kick in. There are many games to play, and they will all be played within the rules and reality of the same game. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Figure out who is already predisposed to do what you have in mind, and rally those people to get it done. The hard way is to waste time trying to convince and motivate the wrong crowd. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You want a relationship to be wonderful. So everything you do that requires more of you and goes above and beyond the expectation is, to you, just part of the package. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ve a single focus. When you hold that beautiful idea in your mind, everyone and everything else goes soft and fuzzy, fading into the background. This is what it means to be driven. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): How many difficult things should you require of yourself in a day? One to five works for most days. Then there are some days, like today, when the proper answer would be none. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You might find yourself in a position to apologise for someone else or take offence on their behalf, either of which might be crossing the lines of social responsibility, in a way that feels right to you.

Peter Mac pays tribute to the Guardian.
Peter McQuarters is part of the legend
Edward Jerningham Wakefield.
Wakefield was reckless, promiscuous and drunk T
here aren’t many dads who publicly condemn their sons. Edward Gibbon Wakefield, who, played a major role in establishing Canterbury, did. He used purple prose to describe his only son, Edward Jerningham Wakefield, who died in Ashburton in 1879. Edward Snr wrote his son was “reckless, weak-willed, a wastrel and a failure, talented and intelligent, contentious, promiscuous and generally unstable”. He should have added the word “drunk”. Edward Jerningham worked for his dad’s company in England but was the ultimate black sheep. He loved philandering and travel and came to New Zealand on the Lady Nugent in the 1850s. With a pioneering name like Wakefield, he was destined for politics. He served two terms as an MP but there was little evidence he did much. What he did enjoy was a liking for booze and plenty of it. By his final term in parliament (1871-75) he was an alcoholic. His party had to lock him in his rooms before important debates so he could stay sober enough to vote. However if opposing members didn’t want him to support a bill, they lowered a bottle of whisky down the chimney. Either Johnny Walker, Jim Beam or Jack Daniels led to his death. Despite being married with two daughters, Edward Jerningham Wakefield ended his days at the Old Men’s Home in Ashburton. He was 59. It’s unlikely his room had a chimney. His was one death the Ashburton Guardian didn’t record. Wakefield died on March 3,
1879 and the Guardian wasn’t established until September of that year. Despite having a population of just over 1000, Ashburton had four newspapers. The thirst for news was that great. There was the Ashburton Mail, the Evening News and the Evening Echo which became the Ashburton Herald. Then, as part of the Herald’s empire, the Guardian was established in 1879. It’s not surprising that politicians owned newspapers. It helped their careers. The year after the Guardian was published, it was purchased by Hugo Friedlander and Edward George Wright. Friedlander was mayor and Wright became MP for Coleridge. The Mail was purchased by William Steward in 1884 who bought the Guardian the following year. Steward was also a Member of Parliament and there are stories of MPs writing their editorials in the debating chamber instead of contributing to what was going on. Partisanship ended when Robert Bell purchased a financial interest in the Guardian in 1900. He was a genuine newspaperman and not an elected representative who wanted to control the news in his electorate. The 20th century began with fair, impartial and independent coverage of Mid Canterbury news. It was a milestone event. As we approach 120 years of family ownership, it’s stayed that way. There’s no echo back to the colourful, inflammatory days of four newspapers scrapping with each other. Not even an Evening Echo.
A
full-time job selling hi-fi stereo systems in a local electrical store was a good employment start, but not the stuff of a career. “Get a trade behind you,” was the solid message from my father which, in 1974, led me to the office of one John Bell, proprietor of the Ashburton Guardian. Next thing I’m a brand new apprentice working as a typographer. Interesting times, learning how to make up a newspaper page with type cast from metal ingots. Half-way through, the world changed, as the clunky inky grimy print shop environment gave way to the first wave of new generation newspaper production computers. The ancient but reliable huge Cossar flatbed press which had printed countless copies of the Guardian for many decades, gave way to the impressive shiny new Goss Community offset presses that stole the show. Nearly everything about my job changed. It was like two completely different trades morphed into one apprenticeship. Progress. I can clearly remember the only case of industrial action to hit our print shop which became caught up in a nationwide union stoppage. With a strong sense of what the Ashburton Guardian stood for and, after careful negotiation with the “journeymen” who we didn’t want to get offside with, three of us went to Mr Bell and managed to produce
the paper on our own, ensuring the important task of connecting with the community was not broken. I am still very proud of that. It takes a whole community to produce a newspaper. Journalists, photographers, editors, sub editors, newsmakers, advertising salespeople, composition team, advertisers, subscribers, delivery people, the list goes on. Every role is vital. There is a very involved chain and for it to work, everyone must play their part. I would sometimes make my way upstairs and marvel at the entire wall of old leather-bound volumes of the Guardian going back many decades. Pull one from the shelf, open it up randomly and instantly there was a sense of being transported back to the Ashburton of long ago. But not forgotten. Recorded here for posterity. For amongst those weighty volumes was our story. Day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. A glorious narrative of where we live and who we are. For 140 years the Ashburton Guardian has been a family-owned business. But we all know it is much more than that. It is the chronicle of our lives and those who have gone before us. I was proud back then as a printing apprentice, as I am proud now as a contributor and subscriber, to be a part of the legend. May it continue to do what it has always done so well.
