Higher honours on offer BY KATIE TODD

KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Around 1200 Ashburton College students descended on the domain yesterday in good sporting spirit. Students participated in the annual athletics prelims to vie for house points and secure their spots in the college’s athletics finals. House points were awarded to students based on how many of the 10 events they tried – from shotput to discus, high jump to

long jump, varying length races and javelin and cricket ball throwing. Students dressed in creative house costumes and pitched brightly coloured house tents in different spots in the domain. The college’s athletics finals will be held on March 1 and at the end of the month, the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Athletics tournament will take place in Timaru. The athletics prelims are the first major house point competition to take place each year.

They might have manned the gate for years, but taking over the running of Ashburton’s massive caravan and campervan fair is a whole new ball game for members of Ashburton Lions. For 14 years the expo was run by founders Murray and Bev Meadows, but last year they decided the 2017 event would be their last and the Lions club stepped up to the plate. Yesterday they realised just how big the task actually was. Sites were marked out on Tuesday and from early morning they were busy checking off bookings as casual campers, sellers and trade site holders arrived as well as dealing with non-stop inquiries from people who simply turned up hoping to find a spot to trade.

But event convenor Rex Whiting had a firm hand on the controls. Money changed hands, information packs were handed out and visitors were sent off to set up camp for the weekend. As much as the expo is about buying and selling motorhomes and caravans and accessories, it has also become an important event for campers. Yesterday they were turning up in large numbers and setting up for a social weekend. Having a tried and tested template for the event made the first year easier, Whiting said, but like all new operators, the Lions are trying a few changes this year. And they’ll be surveying people to gauge satisfaction and hopefully to get ideas for improvements, he said. “Some of the ways we’re doing things might be a bit tighter but

there’s a lot of history with this event. We’re trying to follow this and it might take a bit of adjusting for some, but we’re learning as we go.” Lions president Garth Bateup said the project was a large one for the club and would involve most members for what he anticipated would be two very long days. Money made will go into the club’s charitable trust and would be used for charitable purposes around the district, he said. Lions will continue to man the gate as well as running the event but have handed over the running of the Lions food caravan to the Celtic Rugby Club’s juniors. The South Island caravan and motorhome expo will be held at the Ashburton Showgrounds from 9am to 4pm, today and tomorrow.

Council versus sport? A number of local news articles of late have me a little perplexed and I have felt the need to put pen to paper. I have lived in Ashburton all my life, love the town, enjoyed growing up here, went to school here, been a proud sporting representative of the district for many years, do business here and get involved with community events/needs through both sponsorship and time. This letter is not about me, just giving a little background to my thoughts. A couple of years ago I was gladly involved in fundraising for our magnificent new stadium. A big part of fundraising for that project involved volunteers approaching many businesses in town and asking them to make a significant contribution to the new complex. Many did, we were/are really grateful, and we now have a great facility. The new pool/stadium is now used and enjoyed by numbers far reaching expectation. And apparently this is now a problem? No-one will argue the fact that the council contributed the bulk of the funds to build the new facility. Purpose-built for community needs and affordable for the public and sports intending to use it. That was an absolute prerequisite for user groups and the community before the build commenced. But now I sit here writing this letter shaking my head and wondering what the thought process is behind (and who is directly responsible) for even mooting an increase in not just stadium charges to users, but charges to any sport that uses facilities requiring work done by the council. That also includes any sport using the domain. I am writing this letter with no figures to back it up, just using the emotion and frustration that has bottled up inside recently. Council’s defence is that facilities need to be more user pays? That means charging the sporting associations more as they

Well known local identity, Dean Harrison, weighs in on the stadium fees debate with the following letter to the editor.

Dean Harrison are the “users”. Council, let me tell you this for a fact. All sporting organisations in our district are governed by volunteers. Some have much needed paid employees, but for the main, clubs in our district are run by your ratepayers. Granted, there are many district ratepayers not involved in sport. Many of them probably feel that it should be user-pays, why should they contribute any more than they do now. Firstly, if you are a ratepayer that has played sport and may be a generation or two older, you have already been afforded the privilege of playing on grounds or in facilities probably funded in part by council or ratepayers, so just think back to your day. Granted, there was more fun-

draising or working bees done back then, but it was five days a week trading/working. Today club committees have very limited time, new health and safety rules, and limited income streams. The bulk of all sporting codes’ income is from subs. So, our council feels the need to increase charges to sports as user-pays is the way to go. That’s right, charge those people more for being active and when selected, proudly representing the Mid Canterbury district. But it doesn’t stop there. Just this week, I read up for public consultation is proposed new/ extra charges for other sports. Now, for sporting organisations using the domain as an example. You may be required to pay for council services such as

mowing the domain (is that all they do, not sure?). To me though, it is glaringly obvious, the domain is not mowed every week entirely for the benefit of those sporting codes that use it. Most nights I drive past and there are people/families playing touch rugby or soccer or walking their dog or going for a jog or socialising (on the mown grass). If it is user-pays, they must contribute also to the cost. The only fair solution is to fence off the entire domain and put in a toll gate. In fact, why just stop at sport? I read in today’s paper that the council contributes almost $2 million a year to arts and culture in the district. At the risk of playing the devil’s advocate here, apply the same set of rules, user-pays. For example, how much does it cost the community/ratepayer to host say the Multi Cultural Bite. A great event, showcases the district, but if I don’t attend, why should any costs attributed come out of my rates. Woo back! That is just an example, but a really valid one if you are looking at a user-pays model. In reality I could go on for ages with more examples and you can either agree with me or not. But I will say this. For those in the community worried about things such as the crime rate in the district going up, there is one sure way to make sure that crime continues to rise. You make sport in the district unaffordable for families. Be it on your head council; be careful what you wish for. Sport is a big part of the Kiwi psych, and I would suggest a healthy community past-time. The consequences of less people in the community playing sport as a result of your proposals will come at a much greater and hidden cost. Dean Harrison

Village lifestyle coming to Lake Hood By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

A dream that has been 10 years in the growing is about to see the light of day as Jo Ruane and John Skevington finalise plans for their long awaited subdivision on terraced land above Lake Hood. For them what will be a 32 home, village style housing development, is a project that has special links with the past. The 20 hectare block above the Lake Hood terrace was owned by Skevington’s grandmother’s family and more than 20 years ago he bought it back into the family fold, dreaming that one day he could create a special housing development on the site. That day has come and Ruane and Skevington have started ticking the boxes – resource consent, tick, subdivision concept drawn up, tick, house sites pegged out, tick and engineering plans, almost completed. “We started planning this about 12 years ago, but timing is everything. It was not the right time back then, but now it is and what we’re planning fits in nicely with the aquatic park’s development,” Ruane said. Their development, however, is very different to the aquatic park extension project. “It’ll be called the Village Green and the best way to describe it is as groups of houses in a parklike setting, a working farm. It’s unique and totally different to any concept down at the lake. We’ve sited the houses in clusters to take advantage of the views.” The development offers sections in four groups, nine sections along the lake terrace, one of 10 sections and two of seven. There are views, covenanted green spaces and the sections are large enough that each will feel quite separate, she said. While the sections are in clusters, they are shaped in a way that will ensure home builders’ privacy and views are retained. “It’s about creating a sense of space,” Ruane said. It’s been a long and challenging journey to get to this point, Skevington said, but when he stands on site and thinks about the future, every challenge has been

John Skevington and Jo Ruane looking over plans for their Village Green subdivision at Lake Hood. PHOTO SUE NEWMAN 180218-SN-008 worthwhile, he said. “We see this as an opportunity to live in the country without the hassle of a lifestyle block where the sections have all been sited to

take advantage of the views.” “We see this as creating a community within a community.” The sections will come with covenants around areas such as

fencing and sheds, and terrace houses and those on the west side of the central road must be single storey. When completed the subdivision will have two entry points

off Huntingdon Avenue. “We have to strike a balance where we’re not too covenanted and we limit the market and where it’s open slather. We want to set a standard so that if someone builds a nice house they can be confident other people will too. “We want this to be a subdivision we can be proud of now and in the future and we want that for the people who live here too,” Skevington said. As the land begins its transformation from bare paddock to housing development, Skevington and Ruane are spending hours in Christchurch identifying landscaping and perimeter ideas they believe will work in the Village Green. “This will be like living in a park and the covenants we are putting in place are for ever. people can buy here and know things won’t change,” he said. Earthmoving equipment will be on site in April and they’re hoping the first homes will be built later this year. Marketing is to start around April too, but the couple are happy to talk to people interested in being part of the Village Green and to share site plans with them.

The proposed Village Green subdivision planned for a 20 hectare block of land on a terrace above Lake Hood.

Shetland sheepdog Zoe was left unable to stand after children threw rocks at her over a fence. PHOTO SUPPLIED

Children pelt dog with stones By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

An Allenton resident is reeling after schoolchildren pelted her beloved dog with rocks. Gayle Cumberland returned home from work on Wednesday to find her Shetland sheepdog Zoe acting unhappy, lethargic and “out of character” after damage inflicted by children earlier that afternoon over her fence, and witnessed by her flatmate. “I’m absolutely gobsmacked that anyone would want to hurt an animal, let alone mine,” she said. “She is such an affectionate girl, she is a lovely girl.” The incident occurred at about 3pm on Wednesday, and Cumberland’s flatmate ran outside to scare off the children. However, by Thursday morning, Zoe was struggling to stand from the damage inflicted, and Cumberland was highly concerned. She took her to the vet and reported the incident to police and local schools, but said she no longer feels safe living in her area. Cumberland moved to Allenton in May last year, and said the incident occurred despite a tall fence right around her yard. “I think policing in school areas needs to be more visual in these times of the day,

when children are [hanging] around after school.” The incident occurred in the wake of several other reported animal cruelty incidents, including a cat shot with a BB gun and a dog allegedly fed rat poison, both during night-time and within the past fortnight. Ashburton and Methven Beware Facebook page administrator Kylee Sissons said she thought the other incidents were particularly concerning in light of recent robberies. “People have targeted the one thing that might stop them from entering a property, that would alert their owner to anything suspicious.” “It’s taking low to a whole new level.” Police said they advise any owners with concerns about the safety of their pets to make sure their property is secure, especially if they have animals who spend most of their time outside. “They may want to consider using CCTV cameras or sensor lights, and where possible keeping hutches and kennels out of sight … also, noting down registrations of any suspicious vehicles near their home, as burglars may scope out a place beforehand.”

■ RAKAIA BRIDGE

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

Minor injuries and major traffic delays resulted from a car crash on Rakaia Bridge yesterday afternoon. About 1.30pm a car travelling north crashed into the side of the bridge towards the northern end, blocking traffic in the lane behind it. Emergency services rushed to the site to assess and treat the driver for minor

injuries and manage the remaining lane with traffic control. Police reported that the car was unable to be driven off the bridge and required a tow to be cleared. The crash also resulted in damage to the bridge. The car was towed and the road was cleared at around 2.30pm, but delays lingered as queued traffic cleared. Individuals driving to Christchurch reported being held up for an extra 20 to 30 minutes while the road was cleared.

On the trail of the Black Panther By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

The ever-elusive Mid Canterbury Black Panther might be about to meet its match: a Canberra-born author with a penchant for the peculiar. For nearly 50 years Tony Healy has travelled the world investigating and writing about rare animal sightings – from the UK’s Exmoor Beast to the Himalayan Yeti Man, Scottish Loch Ness Monster, Canadian Sasquatch and Malaysian Orang Mawas, to name just a few. Now Healy has journeyed to New Zealand to uncover our biggest cryptozoological mystery: the Mid Canterbury Black Panther. The incentive, he said, is simple. “There’s a story there which should be told.” Healy’s interest in the pursuit of mysterious beasts dates back to the 1950s, where he sighted a sandy coloured mountain lion on an Australian back road. “I was hitchhiking from Canberra to Darwin … we were driving through corn fields near Ennisdale when I saw it,” he said. “The road was zig-zagging and when we came around one corner, the headlights caught a mountain lion. It was crouched and it sort of looked at the car and did a snarl and then the headlights swept

He has a footprint cast from a big cat sighting in Kangaroo Valley, Australia. PHOTO KATIE TODD 140218-KT-011 past it. I don’t know if the driver saw it, and I immediately thought I’d imagined it. “It wasn’t until at a party months later when I met someone else who had seen something similar – I started researching and in

turned out 200 to 300 people had seen it over the years.” Healy began seriously researching crypto mysteries around the world from 1970, along with author Paul Cropper. The two have penned two books about their

research: Out of the Shadows: Mystery Animals of Australia, and The Yowie: In Search of Australia’s Bigfoot. “Our research goes back so far now I think we have an unusually good perspective,” he said.

“We can now see patterns in the evidence. We’re dealing with the unexplainable but yet there is a continuity.” One such pattern is the common and zoologically strange phenomenon of seeing large black cats more often than their lighter-furred counterparts – despite the latter being much more common, and despite the two “not really hanging out together,” Healy said. Another is the frequent sighting of mysterious land animals nearby to other mysterious water animals. Healy said the only large cat to be caught in Scotland, a puma called Felicity, was caught just 10 miles from Loch Ness. Healy will be in the South Island for five weeks, gathering content for his next book titled Mystery Safari. While here, he hopes to do research on a couple of other animal mysteries – one being a lakedwelling creature with a reptilian head and teeth like a wolf once sighted near Lake Coleridge, and the other the well-known Taniwha. Healy urges anyone with any information about the Mid Canterbury Black Panther to get in touch with him at tonyhealy05@gmail. com.

Age no handicap for avid golfer Golf might be a game you need to start when you’re young if you hope to make the big time, but for club golfers, it’s a game that can remain with you for many years. Ask Betty O’Neill. She’s 90 and still hitting a mean ball around the Tinwald Golf Club. She talks to reporter Sue Newman about the game she loves. Age is most definitely just a number to golfer Betty O’Neill. That she’s just celebrated her 90th birthday (but looks 80) is absolutely irrelevant to the sprightly nonagenarian. She still turns out at least once a week at the Tinwald Golf Club and still plays a tidy enough game to whip many half her age. She started playing in 1971 when she was in her late 30s and since then she’s rarely missed a club day or a tournament. Back then she was one of the growing band of young women who celebrated their last child starting school by picking up a sport that was tailor-made to fit around child-free hours. “My friends had started, they asked me to join. It was a lot of fun and we had a lot of laughs,” she said. She’s the only one of that group of friends, who struggled through the tough months as new golfers, who is still walking the course. Over the years she’s played most courses in the South Island and 15 years ago joined a golfing trip to Australia, playing seven courses over a couple of weeks. While she has a long history with the game, Betty says she’s never been one of the club’s stars. “I got down to silver division for a week, but soon went back out again. The good thing about golf is you can enjoy it at every level. You’ll never conquer it. One day you think you’ve got it and the next

day you get the shock of your life when it’s gone again.” Betty last played in a team representing her club about six years ago and her last 18 hole handicap was 30. Her lowest was 18 and she reckons her best round was a nett 63. She has a bronze A championship title to her name, and five years ago she was runner-up in the same grade. The red letter achievement in her golfing scrapbook, however, was a hole-in-one. She scored that on Tinwald’s 6th hole in 1999. This year Betty opted to join the nine hole golf section rather than playing the traditional 18 hole game but that had nothing to do with lack of fitness. Rather it was because most of her friends – many, years younger – had opted to make the change. “We’re a good, close crowd and we have a lot of laughs. It’s just good to be out there walking,” she said. With almost 50 golfing years behind her, Betty looks back at a game where the fundamentals have stayed the same but where there has been significant change in playing numbers. “Back then we would have about 120 women on a Tuesday, now it’s more like 15 nine holers and 20 to 25, 18 holers. Women have to work today. Look at the cost of things, the price of houses. Then, women were at home looking after children. It was a very

different era,” she said. While her early golfing years were as a stay-at-home mum playing mid-week golf, a move to town meant a return to work and Betty joined the business women’s ranks, playing on Saturday mornings for 10 years. In the 70s golf was a very formal affair. Women wore skirts rather than trousers and when that rule relaxed a little, trousers could be worn on the course but players had to change into a skirt to enter the club house. Betty applauds today’s more casual dress code but says she still likes to see players dressed in club colours when they’re representing their club or as a team. Golf clubs have changed over the years and Betty has always made sure she’s kept hers up to date, however, she reckons the only real difference is in the size of the head. Like many golfers, she’s concerned about falling club membership, but says the Ashburton District seems to be one of the stronger golfing areas. “I’ve heard a lot of talk about clubs around the country that are just sitting there and not being used but we don’t have many of those down here. We have some great little country clubs, they’re wonderful.” As keen as she is on playing, Betty is also a keen watcher of the sport. She’s kept an eye on Kiwi star Lydia Ko’s progress and says

Betty practising her golfing skills in the backyard. PHOTO SUE NEWMAN 150218-SN-004

her constant changing of caddies and coaches has her puzzled. “You just start wondering what she’s going to do next. She’s the only one I know of who changes so many times.” She might be just one of very few competitive golfers around New Zealand aged 90 or more, but Betty doesn’t see that achievement as anything remarkable. “I just go from day to day. It’s

what you are really … if you’re lucky enough … I’ll be playing golf as long as I can walk,” she said. If she’s not golfing, Betty spends her time looking after an immaculate quarter acre section that boasts a full vegetable garden and flourishing beds of flowers and shrubs. When asked who does the work, the answer shouldn’t be a surprise – “why me, of course,” she said.

Farmers join forces for lamb sale BY COLIN WILLISCROFT COLIN.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A long-running South Canterbury lamb sale has taken on extra significance for Mid Canterbury sheep farmers in recent years. The Rollesby Valley sale, one of the biggest on-farm lamb sales in the South Island, has been running for 24 years. About five years ago 70 per cent of the lambs sold at the sale went south, but these days the same percentage instead go to Mid Canterbury lamb finishers. This year’s sale, held on February 8, involved 12 vendors and nine locations, so it was a big couple of days for the South Canterbury PGG Wrightson livestock team, with team members working both the day prior and then on the morning of the sale to prepare the stock for sale. More than 20,000 lambs and ewes were on offer at this year’s sale, held up the Rollesby Valley near Fairlie. It first came about after local farmers agreed it would be great to get lambs off their farms in one go, rather than drafting until June. Fairlie-based PGG Wrightson livestock agent Bruce Dunbar was key to co-ordinating the first sale – with Stanton and Airies Station owners being a big part of the genesis of the sale. It’s now seen as a great example of farmers in a community working together for a common goal. Joe Higgins, PGG Wrightson regional livestock manager, said this year’s sale was very successful. “We are extremely happy with how the day went and all of the vendors are pleased with their results – with all up on last year by $15 to $25,” Higgins said. “It is always challenging logistically selling a large number of lambs and travelling from property to property – and keeping the momentum of the sale going – but the day went very well. “Over the years the sale has gained a good reputation and was well supported by a strong gallery of repeat buyers. “Top price on the day was $149 at Herb and Cate Ross’s Single Hill Station for a pen of 125 Perendale wether lambs. “The interest in halfbred lambs was strong, with a top price of $102 at both Mt Dalgety Station and Ranui Station.”

THE SALE WAS HELD AT THE FOLLOWING PROPERTIES: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Mercer Group narrows loss Mercer Group narrowed its firsthalf loss after more doubling revenue, but says its performance was still not where it needed to be with disappointing earnings in its robotic bulk foods handling division. The Christchurch-based company reported a net loss of $370,000 in the six months ended December 31, narrowing from a loss of $2.6 million a year earlier. Revenue rose to $16.4m from $7.9m a year earlier. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation were $96,000, turning from an ebitda loss of $1.5m. Last financial year, Mercer repositioned the business into what it now sees as a holding company for

three separate businesses: automated and robotic bulk foods handling system Haden Custance; the still-to-be-commercialised medical sterilisation technology unit SClave; and the traditional stainless steel fabricator Mercer Stainless. “While the performance of the group is not where it needs to be, we are pleased to have recorded a positive group ebitda for the half year,” the company said in a statement to the NZX. “We remain confident that Haden Custance can generate profitable growth going forward through a greater focus on sales origination in its markets.” The company said its stainless

division lifted revenue 35 per cent to $10.6m, while Haden Custance sales momentum was slower than previously projected at $6.3m. “In the short term, the business has decent workflows that should result in a stronger second half of the financial year. “We are still targeting having the S-Clave in market this financial year. While this will be a significant milestone for the group, its growth, if successful, will occur over the years ahead. Mercer Stainless has adequate workflows for the second half of the financial year.” The shares last traded at 46 cents, up 24 per cent in the past year. – NZME

It also found that ministry workers were uncertain of the complaints process for whistle-blowers, and were fearful about the repercussions of speaking out. The fallout included the resignation of Auditor-General Martin Matthews, who headed the Transport Ministry at the time. A State Services Commission review was launched into the Protected Disclosures Act, and State Services Minister Chris Hipkins said a series of workshops will begin next week. “It is crucial that employees feel safe to report cases of serious misconduct,” Hipkins said. Hipkins said recent analysis suggested that the law may not be working as effectively as it could, and lags behind international practice in a number of key areas. The law aims to protect people who report serious wrongdoing in the workplace, but it requires an

The Government is exploring greater protections for whistleblowers, which it says is vital to enhance public and private sector service integrity. This work follows the highprofile case last year of Ministry of Transport workers that raised concerns about fraudster Joanne Harrison, and then lost their jobs in a restructure that Harrison was involved in. Harrison, a ministry senior manager, stole $726,000 from the ministry and was sentenced to three years and seven months, after charges were laid by the Serious Fraud Office. In the aftermath, State Services Commissioner Peter Hughes ordered an investigation that found that the three ministry employees suffered disadvantage, including hurt and humiliation, but did not lose their jobs because of their whistle-blowing.

The High Court has ruled that the Crown Minerals Act has primacy over the Reserve Act in an application to mine coal on reserve land in Buller. Justice Gerald Nation’s ruling was sought by Rangitira Developments, which wanted to know what Buller District Council was required to consider when considering its application for access to land managed by the council as a ‘water conservation reserve’ under the Reserve Act. Rangitira wants to develop the Te Kuha open cast coal mine at the site which is south of the Denniston and Stockton Plateaus, southeast of Westport. OUR VIEW

The battle to find our new blue leader B

ig Bad Bill has gone over the hill, but who’s going to fetch his pail of water? There’s growing unrest among New Zealand as innuendos and suggestions float free, like the contamination in the Ashburton River, around who will be the one to step into the big boy, or big girl, pants and take the helm of the opposition. As far as we definitively know, there’s three. So, it should be easy enough to select the trifecta. Don’t write off Mark Mitchell just yet though, there’s strong word he will join the race and there are similar murmurings for one Steven Joyce to also join alongside the apparent contenders; Simon Bridges, Amy Adams

and Judith Collins. What a line-up. We’re one short of being able to form the cast of Friends, yet it may even still play out like a bit of a sitcom when things do get serious because the whole process of electing a new party leader is an exasperating task. Secret ballots, behind closed door deals and who knows what other underhanded tactics all in an effort to get the top job.

All 56 of National’s MPs will vote in the secret ballot to elect the new leader. A majority of 29 is required to have a clear winner. Yet, as if it was a battle to the absolute death, the first vote is highly unlikely to be the last. The lowest polling contender in the first round will be kicked from the island – with Jeff Probst popping up to state that “the tribe has spoken”. Then we will continue down the path until we get to the last two lions in the den – an all-out blood fight that could, in some sense, leave a party in tatters – if they aren’t already there, of course. The switched votes following an elimination will make for

interesting times. Those who vote for one, might not necessarily favour another but their vote becomes incredibly almighty after the first one or two rounds. Of the declared contenders, there’s an interesting mix of personalities sitting there. Amy Adams, who holds a strong tie to this region is like the quietly spoken – yet incredibly wellinformed and educated Camp Mum, who would whip the ship back into shape, yet it’s hard to imagine her on the rostrum going to war with Jacinda because she just seems too nice. Crusher Collins on the other hand, is her polar opposite. She’s like the proverbial bulldog locked up in a cage and you know

when she gets loose she’s going to be biting the shins of more than just a few. That could ultimately be her downfall, she’s come a long way in the past two years, but leopards – do they ever change their spots? And then there’s Simon Bridges. Many will predict his victory based largely on the fact he’s a male who is assertive and seems to know what he wants and how to get it, but he comes with more question marks than answers. For weeks this will carry on and the malarkey will drag right out and when it does finally come to a halt and a new fighter for the blue corner is determined, it will probably be time for them to be voted out again.

Politics and junk TV love affair

I

have to come clean to you – I have loved the start of this year when it comes to politics and junk TV. And yes, they are two different beasts. My hat goes off to our Aussie neighbours for the train wreck that is Married at First Sight! I can’t get enough of the stuff. Not since the Chappell brothers cheated to win a one dayer, have the mighty Aussies come up with such a stupid idea. And then the Opposition Circus arrived in town. I love the circus and I must say the National Party are quite good for first timers. Cracks me up to hear PM wannabes deny they are interested in the leadership role and then announce their bid as soon as Bill said he was stepping down. Amy Adams has written a couple of Guardian columns that follow the same formula, express what National did when in government, then lament the changes Labour are proposing and how this will be a disaster for the district. It’s like when you catch up with former neighbours who express dismay that the new owners of their house decided to take out a garden or paint the fence a different colour. It’s a predictable opposition tactic we will see from her for the next three years unless she picks up the top job and that becomes her focus. Falloon has also had a go at the sideshow act of opposition MP, by writing stuff. In his first hundred

Peter Livingstone OUT OF SCHOOL

days, our investigative newspaper has reported that he started a petition to the new Government requesting a four-lane road from here to Christchurch. Sadly his petition has not arrived as it has been held up in the post truck on the Rakaia Bridge, as they wait for a Hikoi on better funding for special needs children to get across. Now had the bridge been four-laned, his mail would have arrived. Then recently, it was reported that Falloon bashed the keyboard again and wrote another letter asking for more cops to crush the tidal wave of burglaries plaguing the town. Unfortunately this letter will never arrive as the postbox he popped it into was stolen. The postie couldn’t deliver it anyway as her new electric bike was nicked as well. Now he will have to lay his cards on the table and declare his allegiance for the next leader. I also see that the editor of this fine paper mentioned Falloon’s actions in an editorial. A smart move because if Hoops had gone around on election day and pulled voters pants down, more

people would have been seen wearing blue undies, not red. However this copped the editor some flak and raised the old impartiality question. What reaction would he have got if he had questioned what National been doing about the lack of police resourcing in Ashburton? This is not a new problem and you couldn’t expect Labour to fix it in its first 100 days, when National had nine years to do something about it. Perhaps they never got a letter about the problem. Never mind, these are just the warm ups for the main show; reactions to the Government carrying out its promise to stop charter schools. Bill English called the actions to can the political deal stitched together by two white privileged male politicians in order to keep themselves in taxpayer positions of power, as “nasty and vindictive”. I wonder what he thought of Hekia Parata’s actions when, at the height of opposition to National Standards, she threatened 440 opposing schools with the removal of their elected boards of trustees if they didn’t comply. After English spoke (he got very tired and said I’d rather write poetry about Foveaux Strait and decided to step down), Judith Collins was interviewed at some swanky Tauranga Yacht Club type centre, and slapped Jacinda with the hypocrisy sausage and called the teachers union, “big, fat and mean”.

I wonder how the union and its members felt, as most of them are women, to hear a leading woman politician calling them fat? Yay for female solidarity! Of course this was part of her leadership plans to position herself as the new tough talking sheriff with a passion for free Chinese business lunches. With all this political circus drama going on, I can’t wait to read what this paper’s political column writer has to say, as he has tended to express everything with capitals and quotation marks. This will be no different, but I’m not sure of his tendency to talk about how good looking some of the younger female politicians are, this hints at Creepy Uncle Syndrome. So, am I in favour of charter schools? Not the US model, that is corrupt, just like its leader. The New Zealand model has so far worked for the 1400 students enrolled, so perhaps a well informed decision should be made before a major education decision is announced. But that will never happen as, as always, education remains a circus lion, taunted and toyed with by political ringmasters, hoping to win the favour of a constituency crowd. Avoid burnouts, take time to rest and reflect

A

nyone one working with or associating with lots of people can, without careful planning, burn out. Normal fatigue can be cured with rest since it is mainly a physical state. Burnout is more complex, not just stress in a new dress, but a form of emotional exhaustion that includes disenchantment, disillusionment and sometimes anger. We can’t constantly be giving, and by giving I don’t mean financially, but giving out our time or emotions to family, friends, neighbours, those people we encounter, volunteering without getting in return, all of which can cause burn out. Jesus knew that, which is why he withdrew from the crowds to have time out. So, who can burnout? Well any of us can. Think of all the roles you have in life spouse, parent, worker, volunteer, friend, member of the

Rev David Brown CHRISTIAN COMMENT

community and all these require us to give out, to be there for people, to listen, to offer advice, to care, to reach out, to do practical things, to make time for them and it’s exhausting and at times demanding. And you can’t keep going without getting something in return. Think of yourself as a car. You fill up at the petrol station and all is fine and running well, then the fuel warning light comes on. The warning there is that if we don’t take care of things there is going to be a problem. Then the needle is sitting on empty and if you are like me you might try to push it to see how far you can go on empty. Then suddenly one day you stop. That’s it, you have pushed beyond the limit. It’s not only

cars that need refuelling, we all do. And I would hope one place you may get some of your refuelling is in the church. So, what can we do to prevent compassion burnout? Jesus showed us the answer. After being around people all day, every day, after ministering to a variety of needs, after healing people, after giving out, he withdrew to be quiet, to take time out, to rest, to recharge the batteries, to reflect. And no matter who we are or what we do we all need time out, without it, we burnout. Time out is not an option. If we don’t take it, something, often like an illness of body or mind, will hit us and stop us. When Jesus was in the Garden, what did he do? He went off by himself to pray, to have some alone time. Jesus knew the value and importance of time out and of time to ourselves. God also knew the

worth of that experience. After giving out and working hard, remember that after six days of creating, on the seventh day God rested. We all need the time of Sabbath rest. It may not be a Sunday or a whole day, but it needs to be regular, it needs to be relaxing and it needs to be your time. LETTER Police numbers Andrew Falloon blames the current government on the lack of police numbers. He conveniently forgets it was National that let the ratio of police to the population slip over the previous nine years. In April of last year the National government announced the police increase of 70 for all of Canterbury. And this was over a projected four year period! So how many were Mid Canterbury going to get? What with Andrew calling out the government over not building his “four lane highway” pet project, he seems to be suffering from selective amnesia when it comes to his friends in the National party. Gunman ‘remorseful’ A cowering Nikolas Cruz was comforted by his public defender as he was ordered held without bail during his first court appearance in connection to the deadly shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school that killed 17 and injured 14. The 19-year-old wore an orange jumpsuit and had shackles on his wrists and ankles as he was officially charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. He kept his eyes down and didn’t speak in court yesterday, other than to confirm his name with a polite “yes ma’am” to the judge, the Daily Mail reports. His public defender, Melisa McNeill, comforted him by putting a hand around his shoulder. After the hearing, Cruz’s defence team revealed he was on suicide watch and that he understood the magnitude of his actions. McNeill told reporters gathered outside the courtroom that her client was “broken”. “He’s sad. He’s mournful. He’s remorseful. “He is fully aware of what is going on, and he’s just a broken human being,” she said. She became emotional while speaking to reporters, saying she’s fully aware of the impact the shooting has had on the community, as a parent herself. “I had to have the exact same conversation that every parent in Broward had to have with their children this morning,

His public defender, Melisa McNeill, comforted Nikolas Cruz by putting a hand around his shoulder. then I had to walk and meet with him,” McNeill said. “I’m fully aware of the impact this has on the people who live here.” According to her LinkedIn profile, McNeill has worked in the homicide division of the Broward public defender’s office since 2000. Another member of the defence team, Gordon Weeks, was brought to tears as he addressed reporters, telling them that Cruz “recognises” what he

has done and is “deeply sad”. “He is dealing with the shock of all this that’s going on,” Weeks said. McNeill and Weeks said that Cruz suffers from autism, depression and has dealt with significant psychological problems – all without the sort of support system that most people have. “When your brain is not fully developed, you don’t know how to deal with these things,” McNeill said.

“That’s the child I’m sitting across from.” Weeks added: “The child is deeply troubled and he has endured significant trauma that stems from the loss of his mother.” Florida Attorney-General Pam Bondi has said she is “certain” prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty for the teen. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel revealed that Cruz had tried to mix with a group of students fleeing the school before stopping at fast food restaurants after the attack. The sheriff said Cruz headed to a Wal-Mart and bought a drink at a Subway restaurant before walking to a McDonald’s. Cruz was confronted by a police officer and taken into custody about 40 minutes after leaving McDonald’s. Cruz was initially taken to the hospital to be treated for “laboured breathing”. He was soon released to the police who spent most of the night questioning Cruz, trying to make sense of the horrific school shooting – now the third deadliest in American history. The fact that it was the 30th mass shooting so far this year has spurred activists to call on Congress again to revamp the nation’s gun control policies. President Trump, a staunch defender of the National Rifle Association, said at a press conference that the real issue lawmakers need to tackle is mental health, not guns. - AP

Court martial for nuclear sub crash One of the Royal Navy’s most senior commanders has admitted hazarding a ship after the nuclear submarine of which he was in charge crashed into a merchant vessel. Commander Justin Codd pleaded guilty at a court martial to hazarding the £1 billion vessel, one of Britain’s four nuclear submarines, during a training exercise off the coast of Spain. The 45-year-old, who is attached to the UK Maritime Battle Staff, was said to have taken “his eye off the ball” and caused a crash costing £2.1 million. He was stripped of a year of seniority by a panel of senior officers at a court martial at Portsmouth Naval Base. The charge relates to an incident in which HMS Ambush suffered damage to its conning tower after hitting the ship as it surfaced near the Gibraltar coast on July 20, 2016.

At a court martial yesterday, Cdr Codd lost his seniority for a year after a panel heard he failed to prioritise the safety of the vessel, which was being operated by two sailors on the final day of the 23-week long course. Prosecutor Captain John Atwill explained Cdr Codd, overseeing the training exercise, did not utilise a second periscope to examine his surroundings in order to ‘reduce risk of detection’ and relied only on the information being gathered by the students in the first periscope. Cdr Codd ‘wrongly assumed’ MV Andreas, which was ‘loitering’ in the water and clearly visible, was not a threat. When students turned to avoid a small yacht named Katharsis the submarine was put on course to collide with the merchant vessel. Portsmouth Military Court, Hants, heard despite this there still would have been enough

Commander Justin Codd time to avoid the collision by diving, but Cdr Codd failed to take action and the two vessels collided. Cpt Atwill said: “While it may be justifiable to take risks in war situations it is not justifiable in a training exercise. “His decision to focus on teaching and not safety com-

pounded the errors made by the students. He believed his understanding was enough to keep the submarine safe – the very fact of the collision disproves this case.” The court heard it is not necessarily dangerous for instructors to not use a second periscope. Cdr Codd is in charge of teaching the Royal Navy’s Perisher programme – a course so tough it was named Perisher because of its high failure rate. HMS Ambush, one of the Royal Navy’s 7400-ton Astuteclass vessels, carries what are described as “world leading sensors to detect other submarines and surface ships”. Despite this equipment it still managed to hit the merchant vessel, which escaped undamaged. Aniston single again It took less than five minutes for the rumour mill to kick into high gear after news broke of Jennifer Aniston’s split from husband Justin Theroux. Now, for the first time in 13 years, Brad Pitt and his ex-wife are both single at the same time. Their marriage infamously ended in 2005 after Angelina Jolie entered the picture, but Jolie and Pitt broke up in late 2016. While many are mourning the breakdown of the seemingly rock-solid marriage, plenty of fans are over the moon at the opportunity — unlikely as it may be — to see Brad and Jen 2.0.

Gad sends a message Actor Josh Gad has revealed his friend’s son died in the Florida school massacre, and has led the call among Hollywood celebrities for tighter gun control laws. The Frozen favourite wrote a heartwrenching tweet overnight upon finding out about the death of his friend’s son, after earlier revealing: “A child of one of our friends has a bullet in his chest because a 19 year old had access to military weapon. Pretend it’s normal. It’s not.” He made a series of posts detailing what he planned to do in the wake of the shooting, including remaining a voice of reason, and supporting “every single person who challenges a politician with NRA money behind them”.

No nudity for SJP Sarah Jessica Parker was reduced to tears when she was asked to appear naked in a scene. The 52-year-old actress – who is now widely known for her refusal to shoot nude scenes – has recalled one of the turning points in her hugely successful career, when she insisted she wouldn’t take her clothes off for a movie. The Sex and the City actress explained: “I don’t know if I had confidence or if I was being counselled by people. There was so much pressure for me to take my clothes off. My agent sent a car and a plane ticket [to the film set] and he said, ‘If anybody makes you do anything that you’re not comfortable doing, you don’t”.

An answer to every question Age Concern Ashburton is planning an event that will be the perfect onestop-shop for anyone wanting to find out what’s on offer for people in the Ashburton District who have retired or who are nearing retirement. The district’s second Positive Ageing Expo will be held at the Ashburton Racecourse on March 8 and will bring together providers of more than 60 services that are targeted towards older people. Age Concern Ashburton president Trish Small said the event is the perfect opportunity for people to gather information and ask questions of service providers. “We’re so pleased to be able to showcase the many things that are available in our district for our older and very valued citizens. There will be so much information available about things that people may not be aware of,” she said. Site holders will range from health professionals, community law advisors, bankers, IT specialists, support agencies, service clubs retirement villages and rest homes, Ashburton District Council, Mobility options CDHB, government

organisations and emergency services. The first expo was held in 2016 and attracted more than 500 visitors. Feedback from both site holders and visitors was extremely positive, Trish said. For many people, finding out about the opportunities and services available, made it much easier to plan for retirement, she said. “And it’s good for families also to find out what is available for their older family members, so the expo is just not for retirees.” Rural Women will be selling light refreshments on the day and there will be ample parking in the racecourse grounds, Trish said. “We’re really excited about the opportunity to bring this Expo to the community and we know from the 2016 event that attendees found it really beneficial and that the site holders too, were pleased with the contacts they made and the questions asked about their services.” The Positive Ageing Expo will be held at the Ashburton Racecourse from 10am to 3pm on March 8. Entry is by gold coin donation.

Braden Currie at Wanaka earlier this year.

PHOTO RED BULL

‘I’m racing to win’ Methven-grown multisport champion Braden Currie will go toe-to-toe with his sporting idol Javier Gomez in Challenge Wanaka’s half-ironman event today. Currie grew up watching the Spanish triathlon superstar on TV and followed him for 20 years before getting into the sport himself. He says Gomez has won plenty of world championships, titles and an Olympic medal over the years, but it’s his mentality he admires most. “You have to respect fearlessness in any sport. To attack what you’re doing, to grab it by the collar and assert yourself from start

to finish, that takes massive guts. “Javier races with an aggression that I really appreciate, and I try to channel a similar approach every time I race. “It’s something that not every athlete has, so to get the chance to line up next to someone like that in Wanaka is exciting.” But Currie won’t be overawed by the situation today. “Of course, I’m racing to win. “It’s no different to any other event in that sense.” Currie has rarely been off the podium in the past 12 months, competing in ironman events around the world.

His last event in Taupo in December resulted in a second placing – but Currie had to complete the whole 180km cycle leg with just one gear after a mechanical malfunction. Gomez says Challenge Wanaka presents something new and fresh, and he had enjoyed training in the beautiful region in the build-up to the race. Currie’s preparation for Challenge Wanaka has been unconventional, in that his focus has been on Ironman New Zealand, which is a full distance triathlon, rather than the half distance that he and Gomez will battle over in Wanaka.

The specificity required in training from one event to the other varies, but Currie is confident that his big engine will be enough for him to hold pace with the front of the pack. “Obviously the half requires more explosiveness, more pace because you don’t need to leave as much petrol in the tank for a full marathon in the last leg. “But that’s something that I’ve always had more naturally, so I’m not too concerned about my preparation. “It’s impossible to say what’ll happen, but I think I can adapt to the higher tempo of the challenge half pretty quickly.”

■ SWIMMING

Youngsters get serious Nine junior swimmers of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team are in Dunedin this weekend for three days of racing at a New Zealand Junior Festival. They are among 204 swimmers from all over the South Island competing at the Mako Zone Swim Meet. The swimmers have been putting in a lot of time at the pool preparing for this meet, which is

the first national event for all of them. They will be accompanied by coach Pip White and head down with the hopes of achieving personal best times, perfecting techniques, and hopefully some medals. The NZ Junior Festival-Mako Zone Swim Meet is the new national meet for junior swimmers (12 and under) and replaces

New Zealand Juniors Swim Meet which was last run two years ago. The changes made split the event into four zones – Harlequins (upper North Island), Aquaknights (Central North Island), All Stars (lower North Island) and Makos (entire South Island). All zones will be competing this weekend. Swimmers must qualify in an

individual medley event first before qualifying in any other event. Swimming New Zealand introduced the new criteria to keep kids interested in swimming longer by making it more engaging, fun and taking the pressure off the swimmers in the hopes that they will stay in the sport longer and produce more success at top level events.

■ WINTER OLYMPICS

Expensive mistake for Thornbury A horror final run has cost Kiwi skeleton racer Rhys Thornbury a top 10 finish at the Winter Olympics. Thornbury came into the final run in seventh spot, but a mis-

take at the start saw him finish with the worst time in the fourth and final run. The 28-year-old lost control of his sled as he started his run, and while he eventually corralled it,

he had lost all of his momentum, significantly slowing his eventual run down the course. He eventually finished with a time of 52.14 seconds, by far his worst of his four runs, and 0.5

seconds worse than the nextslowest time. As a result, he dropped from seventh overall to 14th overall, and cut a dejected figure after the conclusion of his race. - NZME

In brief AshColl into 3x3 Ashburton College will send two teams to the annual 3x3 secondary school basketball championships in Tauranga next month. Coach Roasty Douglas will take a junior boys’ team and a senior girls’ team to the three-day tournament on March 21-23. Around 70 teams are expected to enter and AshColl will spearhead a larger contingent of South Island teams as interest in the 3x3 format of the game grows. The junior boys’ team is: Thomas Patterson, William Joyce, Jacob Swan, Jacob Tallentire and Otto Mareko. The senior girls are: Taryn Douglas, Poppy Kilworth, Grace Adams, Sophie Adams and Summer Anderson.

Star still on the rise Ben Simmons thought he should be an All-Star by now. Yet each time commissioner Adam Silver needed to tab an injury replacement from the Eastern Conference, he looked in another direction, to Simmons’ disappointment. Simmons expressed disappointment he didn’t get the call. Be patient, rookie. Simmons will likely get his chance some day. Maybe a bunch of them. “He’s a young player that has a bright future that is going to have a long and steady All-Star career,” Hall of Famer and TNT analyst Reggie Miller said. - AAP

In brief

■ SOUTHLAND

Trentham trip on the line Promising filly Anythingcouldhappn can take a step closer to a North Island trip when she runs at Ascot Park today. The daughter of Iffraaj faces the toughest test of her fledgling career in the Listed ILT Ascot Park Hotel Southland Guineas (1600m). Trained by Steven Woodsford, Anythingcouldhappn holds a nomination for the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks (2400m) and a couple more bold showings will book her ticket to Trentham. “As long as she runs well on Saturday and then at Riccarton we’ll give it a go,” Woodsford said. Anythingcouldhappn won over a mile at Wingatui last time out and has trained on well since. “She’s got a good draw and she’s got a bit of gate speed so she’ll put herself up there on the pace,” Woodsford said. “She’s a pretty good filly and she’ll have no trouble staying so the Oaks is the ultimate goal.” Anythingcouldhappn is out of the Istidaad mare Dimondsontheinside, who won six races and finished fourth in the Gr.2 New Zealand Cup (3200m), fifth in a Gr.1 Wellington Cup and sixth in a Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m).

The well-related Iago will use a better surface at Gisborne tomorrow to further his Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m) preparation. Rain-affected going at Ellerslie for the Electrolux Avondale Guineas (2100m) has forced Team Rogerson to opt for the Gisborne Refrigeration 2000m. “It’s too wet at Ellerslie for him, he needs a good track,” Graeme Rogerson said. - NZME

Oaks challenge still on The responsibility of retaining Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman’s Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld New Zealand Oaks title now rests with Marcellina and Milseain. The Cambridge trainers, who produced Bonneval to win last season’s edition, had Lily The Pink in contention until injury forced her late scratching from the Listed Oaks Prelude (1800m) at New Plymouth. “She’s fractured a splint bone in her hind leg, although it’s not quite as bad as it sounds,” Forsman said. - NZME

Outside draw a worry

Anythingcouldhappn has been nominated for the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks. The stable will also be represented in the Guineas by Thom Brown. He is the winner of one of his four appearances and a last-

start sixth in the Listed Dunedin Guineas (1500m). “He’s still learning and he didn’t have a lot of luck at Wingatui,” Woodsford said.

“The start before at Riccarton he should have finished closer as well, so not very much has gone his way in his races lately.” - NZME

Danzdanzdance’s tricky barrier in today’s Gr.2 Electrolux Waikato Guineas at Ellerslie is a niggling concern for co-trainer Chris Gibbs. “The draw (18) is awkward, it’s a short run to the first turn so there is a little bit of uncertainty,” he said. Danzdanzdance has won once from three appearances and last time out she finished off well for sixth in the Karaka 3YO Classic. - NZME

■ AUCKLAND CUP

Shift of focus for the Sharrock stable Kawi’s season might be over, but New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock has a Group One firmly in his sights with another emerging star of his stable. Sharrock has confirmed a fetlock issue, which came to light after Kawi’s unplaced run in last Saturday’s Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa, has ended the seven-time Group One winner’s season. “He’s got heat and filling in a fetlock and while it’s not serious, he’s too good a horse to be mucking around with for a couple of weeks trying to get an-

M2

Iago off to Gisborne

other run out of this campaign,” he said. “He’s up at the Hamilton Vet Clinic and they are happy with him. “It’s nothing major, but enough to back off him for the season. “We’re pulling out at the right time and this way he can come back and have a really good year as an eight-year-old.” Sharrock’s Group One focus now switches to his Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m) favourite Ladies First, who tackles right-handed racing for the first time in today’s West-

inghouse Nathan’s Memorial (2400m) at Ellerslie. Sharrock said there was room for improvement in the Dylan Thomas five-year-old’s work right-handed on Tuesday and though she trained well on Thursday morning, he was expecting her to take benefit from her first race in the clockwise direction. “She’ll have two runs righthanded before the Auckland Cup – this Saturday and the Saturday before the race,” Sharrock said. “I always like them to have a practice run that way around.

“She’s not gilt-edged for Saturday, but then the heavy ground will suit her so she should still run well.” Ladies First has won seven of her 13 starts, six on heavy tracks to go with her last-start win on a good track at Te Rapa. “It was a terrific run at Te Rapa, albeit in just a three-horse field. It caught me a bit by surprise just how forward she was. “If it’s a firm track for the Auckland Cup, she’ll be very competitive, but if it rains, they might just be in a world of pain.” - NZME

Talented filly Astor will chase her first black type victory at Ellerslie on Derby day. The Listed Mufhasa Stakes (1300m) on March 3 is the three-year-old’s goal, but the immediate focus is on today’s Beko Appliances 1200m. Astor delighted trainer Cody Cole with her effort for second when resuming in the Mongolian Khan Trophy and said the daughter of Iffraaj hasn’t missed a beat since. - NZME

Kiwi-breds doing well New Zealand-breds have already provided Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young with three winners this week. The Cranbourne-based couple produced Montaser to score at Sandown on Wednesday, then followed up with a winning double at Pakenham on Thursday courtesy of the Tavistock filly Hapuka and Our Peaky Blinders.

In brief

■ ROWING

Rowers among the medals Ashburton rowers have three medals in the bank heading into the final day of the national rowing championships at Lake Karapiro today. New Zealand junior team and former Ashburton College rower Veronica Wall teamed up with Grace Wilson to win silver in the women’s under 20 double sculls, while sisters Olivia and Mollie Gibson won bronze in the senior women’s doubles. Para rower Terry O’Neill also took home a bronze medal. The largest contingent of Ashburton rowers to ever attend the national regatta is producing great results, says coach Justin Wall. The day started with the heats of the under 19 double sculls, with the two best crews in each heat progressing straight to the A final. Wall and Wilson won their heat and the Gibson girls finished second to earn final spots. Two fifth placings followed, with the senior women’s quad (Wilson, the Gibsons and Fran Connelly-Whyte) finishing in 7:03.15, 10 seconds outside a medal placing. The men’s club quad (Matt Rae, Michael Wall, Haxby Hefford and Cameron Moffat) cut out the 2km course in 6:28.01, just four seconds off a bronze medal place. The Gibson sisters combined just before midday in the senior women’s double sculls, lining up alongside another Ashburton crew of Wilson and ConnellyWhyte. The sisters were just one second adrift of the second-placed boat, finishing in 7:42.16. Wilson and Connelly-Whyte were seventh in 7:55.19. Wall and Wilson produced the biggest prize of the day, winning silver in the under 20 doubles. It was a two-horse race be-

Safe start for Paddon Kiwi Hayden Paddon posted the seventh fastest time in the opening stage of Rally Sweden yesterday. The Hyundai factory driver was 2.1s slower than stage winner Ott Tanak’s Toyota Yaris over the short, 1.9km city test. The stage saw two cars on track at the same time – Paddon pipped the Toyota of Esapekka Lappi by 0.1s in their head-to-head battle. “It’s good to be back, a good way to shake off the cobwebs,” Paddon said via Twitter. - NZME

Lowndes hopeful Veteran Craig Lowndes will consider two things when weighing up his Supercars future as he comes out of contract at the end of next year. Three-time champion Lowndes, 43, finished 10th in last year’s championship and only mounted the podium once. With the Adelaide 500 getting this year’s campaign under way on March 1, he said he was unsure if his current contract would be his last. “I’ve had a great run and two things I’ve always said are that if the race car is being competitive and the enjoyment is always still there (I’ll continue),” Lowndes said. - AAP

McLaughlin crashes out Ford driver Scott McLaughlin has crashed out of yesterday’s preseason Supercars testing day in Sydney. The DJR Team Penske star slammed his Falcon into a wall at the first turn after a tyre failure. The crash ended McLaughlin’s day but the New Zealand driver walked away unhurt from what he described as the “biggest” headon hit of his career. - AAP

Thurston ‘nervous’ Veronica Wall will be hoping all the hard yards at training pay off in the last day of the national rowing championships at Lake Karapiro today. tween Ashburton and an Auckland crew, the winners crossing the line in 7:33.98 and the Ashburton rowers four seconds back. There was a big gap to the bronze medal winners. Hefford and Rae finished sixth

and eighth respectively in the club singles A final. Despite their finals’ efforts, rowers had no time to relax and were back on the water late yesterday training for today’s finals. Rae and Hefford are in the club doubles A final at 8.15am, while

Wall is a favourite to take out the under 22 singles at 8.30am. She will be back with Wilson for the under 19 doubles, racing alongside the Gibson sisters, and will be one of three Ashburton rowers in the senior women’s A final at 1pm.

Johnathan Thurston admits he is nervous but has full confidence in his troublesome shoulder ahead of his long awaited NRL comeback. The North Queensland co-captain has received the green light from a specialist to return from an eight month shoulder injury in tonight’s trial against Wests Tigers in Cairns, in what will be his 17th and final season. - AAP

Title up for grabs By Matt MarkhaM

Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz

Methven will hold their own destiny at the end of their racquets this weekend in the final round of Open Grade Interclub for the season. In a fitting finale to the second round of the competition, the two teams who sit atop the leader board will battle it out on the final day for supremacy with everything to both gain and lose from the match. The position should have belonged to Hampstead – but their shock defeat to Fairton last weekend left them relegated to second, four points off Methven, meaning that they need to win by better than four matches to two to leapfrog them this weekend. Should they finish at 4-2 in favour of Hampstead, then both sides will be tied on 28 competition points. Anything less than that, or a win for Methven will see them crowned the round two champions. The most intriguing match up of the day will be in the No.1 singles where Sam Bubb (Methven) and Aidan Mitchell (Hampstead) lock horns. Both were soundly beaten last weekend in their singles matches so will be out for some form of redemption when they take to the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre courts this afternoon. In other A Grade matches today, Fairton take on Tinwald and Southern will square off with Allenton.

In brief Iceland big mover Germany has continued to lead the FIFA rankings, but Iceland’s star continues to rise after it became the smallest nation in history to qualify for a World Cup. In this month’s ranking, Iceland climbed two places and ascended to the 18th position, its best rank to date. Perpetual favourite Brazil remained in the second spot, while Portugal, Argentina and Belgium followed in third, fourth and fifth place respectively. - PA

Gunners closing in Arsenal have one foot in the last 16 of the Europa League after making light of sub-zero temperatures to secure a 3-0 first-leg win over Ostersund in Sweden yesterday. Nacho Monreal gave the Gunners a 13th-minute lead and an own goal from Ostersund defender Sotirios Papagiannopoulos put the visitors in full control at the break. Mesut Ozil added a third just before the hour mark. Celtic also take an advantage into their second leg after Callum McGregor earned the Hoops a narrow 1-0 win over Zenit St Petersburg at Parkhead. - AP

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Why does it have to make sense to be valid? “Making sense” isn’t a universal law like gravity or motion. In fact, much of what works won’t make sense today, and much of what makes sense won’t work. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): In the way that big moves require the packing and transfer of many boxes, big projects will have you working in a world of details. By the day’s end, you’ll have “packed” about a hundred “boxes.” GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The omens say your energy increases as you trust your inner light. Practical voices are pretty sure it’s dark inside your body but you can get your energy going with exercise under the outside light. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You have a gift for discerning what’s necessary and what’s not. This will be perhaps be even more valuable to others who are struggling with focusing on the wrong things. Don’t hesitate to help them out. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Success is not an achievement, it’s a feeling. If you don’t allow yourself to feel successful until a certain metric has been met, that’s a choice and not a fact based on the rules of success. Feelings don’t follow rules. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your life could take many different directions from here. As you entertain possibilities (even just in your imagination) you’ll be joined by flashes of memory and ghost guides from the past. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You don’t have to believe in reincarnation to understand you’ve lived many lives and you will live many more. So what do you need to do to become your next version? Don’t worry. You’ll become it. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): There are amazing talents around you and here’s hoping you’ll use them as inspiration instead of comparison. You are capable of your own kind of greatness, and that’s a very good place to put your focus. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): And your picture of life won’t look anything like your neighbour’s because even though you connected the very same dots, you didn’t do it in the very same order. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Respect lasts longer than attention. Those who make a grab for the spotlight without delivering something of real value soon lose their audience and their credibility with you. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Anyone exerting pressure on you to make the best choice (most likely yourself) simply doesn’t realise there is no best choice. Many are good. All lead to the future. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): It’s said you can never be over-educated. Yet you wonder if you’d be better off not knowing some things. It’s better to learn even more about it because the wider picture will be somehow more palatable.
