■ CANTERBURY BALLANCE FARM ENVIRONMENT AWARDS

Ealing farmer impresses judges BY COLIN WILLISCROFT

COLIN.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Looking after the environment has paid off for a Mid Canterbury dairy farmer. On Wednesday night Sam Mallard, who manages Align Emilius, a 180-hectare property milking 680 cows at Ealing, won the Waterforce Integrated Management Award at the Canterbury Ballance Farm Environment Awards. Mallard said he was surprised to have won the award but very pleased he did. “It’s nice to be commended for doing what you believe in.” While this season Align Emilius is forecast to produce 299,910kg/ MS at 1733kgMS/ha, it was Mallard’s work to ensure the irrigated dairy farm has as little impact as possible on the environment that really impressed the judges. In terms of farm presentation, health and safety, soils, nutrient budgeting, irrigation management and livestock care, it was evident that Mallard put a lot of effort and thought into his role, the judges said. “It is a well-presented farm, it is very tidy and it was evident staff were proud of their surroundings.” The judges noted that native plantings around the cowshed and driveway had been well maintained and were well established for plants only three years’ old, with linseed straw used to control weeds around them to reduce spraying. Comprehensive soil testing had been carried out and this information was used to deliver variable rate fertiliser application for the farm’s nutrient needs, which also impressed the judges. “Sam showed a great knowledge and understanding of soils and nutrient management factors that accompany this. Irrigation was well monitored and well understood.” The judges highly commended Mallard for being proactive in finding practical solutions within the constraints of infrastructure to ensure water efficiency. Mallard said the judging pro-

PHOTO COLIN WILLISCROFT 150318-CW-007 cess was “intensive, but I never felt like I was being grilled”. He was initially nominated by his milk company, Synlait, which was followed by an on-farm visit from a team of four judges who interviewed him for about three or four hours, with a focus on how the business was run alongside looking after the environment. He said the judges were particularly interested in the protocols he had in place to achieve that. After being named as a finalist, which Mallard said was “completely unexpected”, he was interviewed by four different judges. Entering the awards wasn’t just

about winning, Mallard said, it was also a learning experience because he had to think about what was happening on-farm. “It’s not the sort of award you can just go through ticking boxes. You really have to believe in what you’re doing. “You’ve got to live and breathe it.” Align Emilius Limited produces A2 milk through a 60-bale rotary with cup removers and in-shed feeding. The property is 100 per cent irrigated, 95 per cent covered by centre-pivot and the balance with K-line and sprinklers.

Irrigation water is supplied by MHV Water and farm dairy effluent water is irrigated through the centre pivot. The farm has poplars planted along the boundaries and native trees surrounding the farm buildings and effluent pond, along with native treelines separating paddocks. Mallard paid tribute to the teamwork of those who work on the farm, saying it was important that everyone had bought into the idea of ensuring farming activities left as small a footprint on the environment as possible. He said support from the Align

lGroup was also important, and he thanked those involved for their backing and help. Align Emilius Limited is one of four dairy farms and one support farm in the region owned by Align Group. As a whole the group has 4000 cows on 1500ha, produces 1.73 million kg/MS annually and employs 27 staff. Group head of operations Rhys Roberts told a recent field day at Align Longfield, also in the Ealing area, that the company aimed to put its social and environmental responsibilities at the forefront of all its commercial activities.

Alpine Fault will rupture, be prepared By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Movement along the Alpine Fault is deforming the microcontinent of Zealandia, with the southern part (on the Pacific Plate) sliding past and slightly onto the northwest part (on the IndoAustralian Plate). GRAPHIC ALEXRK

If the pattern of the past continues, the South Island has a high chance over the next 50 years of being struck by a magnitude 8 earthquake from a rupture in the Alpine Fault. The sobering reality of a future earthquake was spelled out on Thursday to Ashburton District councillors in a presentation called AF8, that pulled no punches. In a video presentation Tom Wilson, associate professor of the University of Canterbury, outlined the history of the fault and gave an indication of the impact the next rupture would have on Canterbury. The last major alpine fault earthquake was 300 years ago and statistically a rupture has occurred on average every 330 years over the past 6000 years according to

carbon dating evidence. The last earthquake was in 1717. “This shows we’re at the end of the seismic cycle and every day pushes us closer to another seismic event,” Wilson said. His presentation was aimed at encouraging local authorities to up their preparedness for the inevitable event. The impact would be felt South Island wide to varying degrees and while there would be immediate damage, many of the issues would be felt longer term. These would include landslides, liquefaction and extensive damage to infrastructure, he said. In terms of energy, the rupture, at its southern point, would have 32 times the energy of the Darfield earthquake and 1000 times the energy of the Christchurch quake. The greatest impact could come in the loss of access to some parts

of the South Island and the loss of electricity from felled pylons and from power generators that automatically shut down in the event of a quake. “These things will impact longterm recovery,” Wilson said. “The Alpine Fault event may be a lot larger and different decisions will be needed around what may be finite resources. Some areas may be very, very unstable for months and there will be aftershocks.” Preparedness was important, Wilson said, because it was very, very likely there would be another earthquake on the Alpine Fault. “We need to understand there will be immediate challenges and there will be long-term challenges that may go for decades. Prepare for it and use the scientific data wisely and well. How you prepare for this is very important.”

■ METHVEN A&P SHOW

Everything’s in place for a great day – organiser By ColiN williSCroft

colin.w@theguardian.co.nz

Everything has come together nicely for today’s Methven A&P Show, which begins with equestrian events at 8am. A&P association president Andrew Griffiths said he was pleased with entries for the show across the board, while the trade area was also looking strong. “We’re maxed out on those sites – machinery and small business is chokka.” Griffiths said the standard of the 70 gift lambs and 50 gift calves to be auctioned was very high. “There’s some exceptional stock

there. They should go well.” As well as other show favourites like shearing, wood chopping, tugof-war and top team competitions, there is also some quality live entertainment, with local performers Wayne Pannett, Matt Gorman and Greta Casey-Solly joined by internationally acclaimed busker Mullet Man, who will deliver a 45-minute performance. Other attractions include an animal tent, plenty of food and drink, an arts and craft market, side shows and rides. It’s been a big week for show organisers, Griffiths said, but a great team of helpers meant everything was in place for a great day.

Black panther ‘plausible’ By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

After weeks spent investigating New Zealand’s rare animal sightings, an Australian author thinks the Mid Canterbury black panther is our country’s most plausible, convincing mystery. Tony Healy has been travelling around New Zealand since early February, gathering data for a named Mystery Safari, and researching evidence of the black panther along with several other cryptozoological mysteries. “While it would be silly to say I solved the mystery of the black panther, I’ve certainly gained a good overview and it’s the most plausible I’ve seen,” he said. “What struck me was the high quality of the witnesses, you know, people who know what they’re talking about. The testimonial evidence is just mountainous. It’s really convincing.” Healy has spent nearly 50 years travelling the world investigating and writing about rare animal sightings – from the UK’s Exmoor beast to the Himalayan yeti man, Scottish Loch Ness monster, Canadian sasquatch and Malaysian orang mawas, to name just a few. In New Zealand, his research took him around the North and South islands, looking at taniwha sightings in Hamliton, lake monster sightings in Pukaki, otter sightings around Lake Heron, moose sightings in Fiordland and even UFO sightings in Greymouth. While researching the black panther, he spoke to eyewitnesses around Mid Canterbury. “People were really helpful … and I met people who really knew what they were talking about,” he said.

One was a couple living near Mt Somers who had asked their son, a policeman living and working in Australia, to house-sit while they went on holiday in 2016. Despite never having heard of the black panther mystery, the son reported seeing a big cat on the property in broad daylight. “He said it was bigger than a dog, or bigger. He went to their neighbour and asked if New Zealand had any big cats, and that’s when he first heard about the black panther stories,” Healy said. Another witness was backcountry guide Al Kircher, who believes he has seen black panthers on two occasions. “If anyone is qualified to know what they’re looking at … it’s Al,” Healy said. He will be returning to Australia with plenty of content to write his book from. However, on his way out this weekend, he is asking the public for any information on one more mystery. “I’m looking for information about a sighting near Lake Coleridge. In the 1970s, there were several reports of a fearsome creature. “I’m looking for people that know if anyone was hoaxing stories – or suggestions that there was something there.” The fearsome creature in question fits the description of a leopard seal, said Healy. “They said it had a head like a wolf, without hair – and leopard seal skin almost looks like reptile skin, it could certainly look like that,” he said. Healy urges anyone with any information about the Lake Coleridge sightings to get in touch with him at tonyhealy05@gmail.com. The black panther research will be part of his upcoming book.

Books come to life at Dorie School By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

An eclectic mix of characters came to life on the Dorie School courts yesterday as keen readers celebrated the final chapter of a hugely successful book week. The school held a book parade featuring Hermione to Pippi Longstocking, Sophie Mouse to Superman and everything in between. Piwakawaka teacher Kristen Hammerich said the parade was the culmination of an inspiring and motivating book week, throughout which the small rural school had enjoyed visits from four different authors from across New Zealand. One was Rakaia-based Amanda van Vliet, who read her book Bridie Boo the Puppy who Grew and brought along the irish wolfhound who inspired it. Award-winning author and illustrator Grant Bishop came down from Christchurch to share fun tips on how to write a story, and on the road from Auckland for the Storylines National Festival Story Tour, nonfiction writer Maria Gill and up-and-coming author Anne Kayes, also dropped by to tell students about their books. “It’s been very motivating for the children,” Hammerich said. “After seeing Amanda and meeting her dog all of them wanted to share stories about their own pets, so now our class has actually written a dog storybook.” Even children who usually write no more than one or two sentences had enthusiastically put pen to paper after the visits, she said. “It’s been really great … they’ve loved it.”

Surviving the Raetihi bush fires By SUe NeWMaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton man Ross Gibson has become his family’s unofficial keeper of the past. And that past includes a remarkable story of survival that saw his mother, Katharine Tustin, and her siblings escape one of New Zealand’s worst fires, one that raged over hundreds of hectares, destroyed many homes and cost three lives. While the fire raged and families in the North Island town of Raetihi fled for their lives, Ross’ grandparents were many miles away in Wanganui enjoying an overnight break with friends. It was March 18, 1918, and the three Tustin children, Katharine, 8, Bill, 7, and Jack, 5, were left in the care of a 16-year-old high school student. Darkness fell, the children enjoyed dinner and went to bed. It was a night like any other but as the hours ticked by their carer awoke to the sound of strong wind buffeting the house. She looked out the window and saw the hillsides were on fire. Within minutes she had roused the sleeping children and as they raced out of the house she, for some reason, grabbed a teapot from a stand on the sideboard. As

Raetihi in 1917, a year before the fire. they left the property, the young girl paused briefly and buried the teapot in the garden. They made their way to the river and joined dozens of other residents who sought safety from the raging fire. From there they went into town and found they were among several hundred others all in night attire and all looking for help.

Help came in the form of a train commissioned by nearby Ohakune, laden with food and clothing and the transport out of the fire-stricken town. At that stage the fires were still burning and Ross recalls his mother telling him of towering trees that were on fire as the train chugged its way to safety. “She always said she was afraid

they’d fall on the carriages.” The fire refugees were taken to Ohakune and Taihape, but in an age where communication was far from immediate, the Tustin parents were blissfully unaware their children had been through a life-threatening experience. “Reports of that fire say that the cloud was so dense the captain of the Lyttelton to Wellington ferry

was unable to find the entrance to Wellington harbour and ended up in a small bay,” Ross said. As the wind changed and rain began to fall, the fires were extinguished and the families returned to Raetihi, to be faced with a scene of utter devastation. For the Tustin family, whose home was one of the 25 destroyed, the only item saved was the teapot buried in the back yard. It is unclear how his grandparents were made aware of the fire that cost them their home or when or how they returned home to their traumatised children. A couple and their baby died, nine sawmills were destroyed with the loss of 300 jobs, an entire flock of sheep were burned and the losses would affect lives for decades. The fire is believed to have started from rural crop residue burn-off that was fanned by a gale described as of cyclonic proportions. “Mum talked about it as being like a wildfire,” Ross said. The centenary of the Raetihi fire will be marked on Sunday and for Ross, the keeper of family lore, it will be quietly marked as an event that could easily have had a very different ending.

Rosebank residents visit preschoolers By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

Rosebank Village residents were showered with flowers, affection, song, dance, homemade baking and St Patrick’s Day spirit when they visited Phoenix Preschool yesterday. Children from the preschool dressed up in their best green outfits and enthusiastically welcomed a vanload of smiling visitors.

The children performed renditions of the Wheels on the Bus, Incy Wincy Spider and You are My Sunshine, along with a song dedicated to their new goldfish. Teacher Diana Harrison said the kindergarten tries to visit Rosebank Village every month. “But this time they’ve visited us, which is lovely. We’ve even gone out and picked them flowers!”

New gorge route revealed The NZ Transport Agency has selected a preferred option for a new State Highway 3 route to replace the closed Manawatu Gorge. The chosen route will reconnect the Manawatu, Tararua District, Hawke’s Bay and northern Wairarapa regions – but bypass the township of Ashhurst. The preferred option selected was number three of four shortlisted options. The route runs from near the Te Apiti carpark western entry of the closed Manawatu Gorge, across the Ruahine Ranges north of the Gorge, before emerging at Woodville. NZ Transport Agency spokesperson Emma Speight said Option 3 emerged after a thorough investigation and extensive consultation as the safest and most resilient route which best balanced the combined needs of the communities, businesses and road users who would use it. “Everybody understands just how important a replacement for the gorge is. “It will re-establish a key strategic transport and freight link that supports the needs of the people and economies of Central New Zealand,” Speight said. The Detailed Business Case process would begin immediately, covering a 10 year programme of work, targeted for completion at the same time of the replacement route for the Manawatu Gorge. Horizons Regional Council Chairman Bruce Gordon says that progressing a Regional Freight Ring Road in parallel with the Manawatu Gorge replacement route would be a significant step forward for the region. The inclusion of a second bridge over the Manawatu River would assist in building the region’s resilience, provide a safer and more effective connection between some of the region’s key industrial areas, and remove heavy trucks from

Palmerston North’s city centre. Palmerston North City Council Mayor Grant Smith said engagement with regional stakeholders to reach a solution that achieves wider strategic objectives for both the region and the country as a whole was important. “It is important for unlocking future regional economic development that the new State Highway 3 link offers connectivity and alignment to a proposed Regional Freight Ring Road and a new bridge. We are pleased this package of work achieves this,” Smith said. “It is a great example of central and local government collaboration to optimise public investment in infrastructure for the long term, and reflects the impact of the new Government Policy Statement on Transport, which requires regional economic development considerations to be taken into account.” Tararua District Mayor Tracey Collis said the decision had strong support from a range of local authorities and industry representatives. “The ongoing instability of the gorge, which ultimately led to its closure in April 2017, has caused huge disruption for the region. “The replacement route has been a matter of priority for the local councils and mayors and its pleasing to have worked so constructively with the Transport Agency to reach a decision that addresses both the immediate issue and the longer term strategic issues for the Tararua District and the wider region,” Collis said. A detailed business case on the new SH3 route would be finalised over the next few weeks. The project team would then seek resource consents with construction planned to begin in 2020, with the new road completed by 2024. – NZME

Sixteen-year-old Mollie Gibson is another rising star in the Ashburton College Rowing Club. She will compete at this year’s prestigious Maadi Cup at Lake Ruataniwha in four events; the under 17 single sculls, the under 18 doubles, the under 18 coxed quad and the under 17 coxed quad. She is a medal contender in all. The Guardian caught up with Mollie, who is also a straight A student, prior to the national secondary schools’ rowing event.

Rising star Mollie

Q&A

Q: How did you discover rowing? Going into Ashburton College, I was always interested in the sport and so I went to the open day to give it a go and it just went from there.

Q: 2016 was your first Maadi. What do you remember about the experience? My first Maadi was very overwhelming, as I had never been involved in a sporting event quite like it with such a competitive field of athletes. There’s a lot of hype which comes with a competition like Maadi with over 2200 rowers competing and the atmosphere and experience was really cool. In 2016 my main boat was the U15 coxed quad, in which we placed third. I vividly remember that race as all season our goal had been to get a Maadi medal, and we managed to cross the line in just less than a second ahead of fourth place. Overall it was by far the highlight of the season. Q: 2017 Maadi was pretty successful for you. What was the highlight? I have many incredible highlights from that week, amongst them would have to be winning the U16 single and the U18 coxed quad. There’s a lot of satisfaction which comes with winning a race, and getting to experience it with your friends is something really special. Watching the whole team do well and achieve things we didn’t know we could was really exciting. Q: You compete in the singles, doubles and coxed quad, how do you prepare for that challenge? Each training session we generally train in different boats so that when Maadi comes round we are confident that each crew works well. I usually follow the same routine before each race and follow the same race plan in most boats as I know what I can do and what works for me. I’m

definitely excited about all the boats I’m racing this year and hope for some good results across the board. Q: Which race has been your most difficult so far? I don’t think I could choose just one race, each race comes with its own challenges and so adapting to the conditions and competition is crucial for achieving a desired result. Q: Where do you find your motivation? Once I have set a goal for myself, it is just always in the back of my mind and so I find a lot of motivation in working towards it and am constantly reminding myself of the goal when training or competition gets tough. Having a very strong field of competition in my age group definitely helps motivate me as we are obviously all wanting to come out on top at Maadi, and any advantage I can get will make a difference. Q: What is your main strength in the boat? I think I’m definitely a lot stronger than some of the other girls I row against. Or, as my coach likes to put it, I’m “not a ballerina”. We are taught to recognise both the physically and mentally most challenging points in a race and can use that to our advantage when the time arises, then I just have to rely on fitness and strength, as well as mentality to do well. Q: Do you think college rowing’s recent successes have encouraged others to take up the sport? I think that knowing there are people in our community who are achieving great things would help others realise that it is possible for them to do the same. When we’re competing against the biggest and best schools in the country at Maadi with less than 20 rowers and still doing really

well, is hopefully when people in our town realise that we have the coaching and resources to excel. I would encourage anyone to come and give rowing a go. Q: How do you see your future in the sport? I have no idea. I’ll just take things as they come and see where I go; just as long as I keep enjoying it I see myself rowing for a long time yet. Q: Who is your rowing hero and why? The New Zealand Elite team are all very inspiring, the likes of Mahe Drysdale, Hamish Bond and Eric Murray being Olympic champions and Robbie Manson having the world best time. I also find some of New Zealand’s younger representative teams inspiring as the age group isn’t as big so their achievements seem to be more in reach. Coming from a small country and being able to do well on the world stage shows a lot about the level of rowing in our New Zealand. Q: What is your next goal in rowing after Maadi this year? I’m hoping to get a trial for either the South Island U18 team or the New Zealand junior team, but first I’ll just see how next week goes and hopefully continue to build and improve from there in preparation for next season. Q: What’s your recipe for excelling in both rowing and in the classroom? Being quite determined and self motivated is something which helps me balance the two and keep things under control. I have to make sure I keep up with my school work, it’s quite easy to fall behind having time off for regattas. It’s important I keep myself focused on both school work and rowing as it’s quite easy to loose concentration when the lack of sleep catches up.

Steel said the livestock cull is also showing signs of seeping into this year’s production with lamb processing down about 3 per cent from a year earlier and the cattle cull 17 per cent lower than in 2017. “It all suggests primary processing will be a drag on manufacturing activity early in 2018,” he said. Veritas sells Mad Butcher business Veritas Investments shareholders have voted to sell the business and assets of the Mad Butcher franchisor to its chief executive Michael Morton for $8 million. Shareholders ratified, confirmed and approved the sale of the Mad Butcher business and assets to Yogg Ltd, Veritas said in a statement yesterday. Yogg is owned by interests associated with Morton, who is chief executive of the Mad Butcher business, director of Veritas and MBL, and trustee and beneficiary of the largest shareholder in Veritas. The resolution was decided by poll, with 98.4 per cent of the shareholders, who were entitled to vote and voting on the question, voting in favour.

Completion of the sale is expected to occur on March 23, Veritas said. Prior to the meeting, independent adviser Simmons Corporate Finance said the $8m price tag falls within its estimated value of between $7.2m and $9.4m and that the transaction is fair to shareholders not associated with Morton.

Veritas has been selling assets to repay debt it took on to buy a series of businesses since embarking on a strategy of building a food and beverage business with the backdoor listing of the Mad Butcher business five years ago. The company paid $40m for Mad Butcher, half in cash and the rest in scrip, raising $25m to help fund the deal. Veritas previously said if approved, the proceeds will go to repaying $27 million owed to ANZ Bank New Zealand and leave the Better Bar Co as Veritas’s remaining asset. The shares last traded at 4 cents and have shed 20 per cent so far this year. – NZME

“The generally slower PMI suggests we shouldn’t expect firstquarter manufacturing GDP to be much different from the flat result recorded in official figures for the fourth quarter,” Bank of New Zealand economist Doug Steel said. “Early livestock culling on account of adverse weather seemed to boost fourth-quarter manufacturing activity but will have the opposite effect through early 2018 given New Year rains.” Government data out on Thursday showed New Zealand’s manufacturing production shrank 0.1 per cent in the December quarter – following a 0.7 per cent expansion in September – with the wet spring followed immediately by a drought weighing on the agricultural sec-

New Zealand’s manufacturing activity slowed in February as an early livestock cull last year weighed on the year’s early primary production. The Business NZ-BNZ performance of manufacturing index fell to a seasonally adjusted 53.4 in February from 54.4 a month earlier, remaining above the 50 level separating expansion from contraction. Four of the five sub-indices increased, with just finished stocks falling 1 point to 51.1. Production rose 0.4 of a point to 53.9, employment gained 3.3 points to 54.8, new orders returned to an expansionary 54.8 from 49.7 and deliveries also crossed back into positive territory with a reading of 52.7 from 49.8.

An Indian restaurant chain has been fined more than $40,000 in penalties after several breaches to employment law, despite having paid more than $24,000 to staff in arrears previously. Shamiana Ltd and Shamiana Enterprises Ltd, with Satish Shetty as the sole director and shareholder, have been fined $41,000 in penalties after several breaches to employment law. Following complaints received by the Labour Inspectorate, it had been found that Shetty failed to pay staff minimum wage and holiday pay, as well as keep correct employment agreements. Labour Inspectorate regional manager David Milne said the companies involved collectively employed 120 staff across 22 restaurants throughout the country. “We’ve had several complaints dating back to August 2015 of Shetty not upholding his staff’s basic employment rights.” Despite arrears previously being paid to employees and corrective action taken to adhere to the Inspectorate’s improvement notice, breaches continued to occur.

Methodist Church a great save A

shburton has watched one church be reduced to rubble in the past month, but residents will be pleased to have learned yesterday of the intentions to save another with the news of the future of the Methodist Church announced. It’s been a tumultuous trip down a long and winding path, but the final bend was approached on Thursday afternoon and everyone will have sighed with relief when the deal between the Methodist Church group and the Ashburton District Council was finally struck – ending a prolonged period of angst and concern about what the future actually held for the oncethriving hub on Baring Square east.

This has been no flash in the pan process, discussions began almost immediately following the September earthquakes of 2010. At times they’ve been calm and measured conversations and others have been full of emotion. But now, it would appear, we can move forward. A deal is done and now the future is locked and loaded for the site – we just have to wait and watch it unfold.

Unfortunately, we still only scratch the surface on buildings that have tough decisions to be made around their future as earthquake laws and standards continue to be altered and changed to keep up with the latest demands. Earlier this week I was on hand to watch one of the eldest standing buildings in Methven come crashing down when the Methven Trotting Club’s grandstand was demolished. I grew up at the Methven Racecourse with a lot of our childhood spent there wiling away the hours in the day climbing up and down the grandstand exploring its insides and generally just being kids. When news of its fate first

emerged, I was pretty vocal in opposing the idea initially and favoured bringing it up to standard and seeing its more-than 100-year history continue. However, emotion doesn’t often correspond to making sense, sadly. At the end of the day it was going to cost a lot more than it probably should have to make the building safe. A volunteer club that relies heavily on income from race meetings wasn’t in any sort of position to foot that bill. It may be sad, but it’s life. So, it’s nice to see a building being spared – and potentially even coming back better than it ever was – but we probably shouldn’t get used to it.

The sight of another building with the bulldozer going through the middle of it can never be far enough away, but it’s inevitable that at some point in the near future the future of another building is going to meet an unfortunate fate. And although we may get emotional about it and want to do everything in our power to keep it – dollars and cents speak louder than most when it comes to decision-making time. We can blame all this on an act of mother nature too. She’s the one who rocked us to our core and left us in these unfavourable positions – a position we hopefully won’t have to find ourselves in once again in any hurry.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Saturday, March 17, the 76th day of 2018. There are 289 days left in the year. This is St Patrick’s Day. Today’s highlight in history: On March 17, 1968, a peaceful antiVietnam War protest in London was followed by a riot outside the US Embassy; more than 200 people were arrested and over 80 people were reported injured. On this date: In 180AD, Marcus Aurelius, the last of what were considered the “Five Good Emperors” of Rome, died at his military headquarters in present-day Vienna at age 58; he was succeeded by his adopted son and co-emperor, Commodus. In 1762, New York held its first St Patrick’s Day parade. In 1776, the Revolutionary War Siege of Boston ended as British forces evacuated the city. In 1861, Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed the first king of a united Italy. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt first likened crusading journalists to a man with “the muckrake in his hand” in a speech to the Gridiron Club in Washington. In 1943, the Taoiseach of Ireland, Eamon de Valera, delivered a radio speech about The Ireland That We Dreamed Of. In 1958, the US Navy launched the Vanguard 1 satellite. In 1970, the United States cast its first veto in the UN Security Council, killing a resolution that would have condemned Britain for failing to use force to overthrow the white-ruled government of Rhodesia. In 1988, Avianca Flight 410, a Boeing 727, crashed after takeoff into a mountain in Colombia, killing all 143 people on board. Ten years ago: Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, recalling a goodwill trip she’d made to Bosnia as first lady in March 1996, said she remembered landing under “sniper fire” — a statement

Deja vu review A

h yes, a new Government, a new Minister of Education and he wants to review what is happening in New Zillands Yeah/Nah Edjukation Sisteam. This is an utterly pointless waste of time from someone who will not be around to front up to the ensuring chaos that said review will bring. Part of me is actually happy the new minister is taking an interest in the education portfolio and part of me would rather have a back wax on the chessboard, on East Street, at midday, than go through the mess that will be left for schools to sort out. Now that may be a bit harsh you say, but let’s put this into perspective. 1. The minister won’t be around to deal with the outcome of the review. I graduated from Teachers’ College in 1989 and there have been 11 education ministers in the following 29 years or one new minister every 2.6 years. This review comes into effect in 2020, Chris probably won’t be around if he is an average minister. 2. The Education Act of 1989 is so different from its original version the authors would not recognise it now. Whatever the working party comes up with for the minister, it will not be what the schools end up with. There have been at least 39 major amendments to the original act. That is more than one per year and most of these have been to satisfy political agendas – think

Peter Livingstone OUT OF SCHOOL

power of the minister to remove boards, national standards, charter schools, partnership schools, cohort entry and so on. Here is the major beef, basically none of the amendments have come from the plebiscites at the chalk-face, they have come from powerhungry politicians desperate to say they made a difference for New Zealanders. 3. Only last year did the Oompa Loompas of Parliament figure out that there was no vision for New Zealand Education and therefore on May 19, 2017, finally it was decided to have enduring objectives for education in New Zealand written into the act. Seriously, until then we had no long-term goal/reasons/ vision/point/purpose or whatever as to why we spend 11 billion dollars a year on schools! I’m not kidding you! And, of course, in order to bring this into play, there had to be an amendment to the Education Act! That amendment is not even 12 months old and it is going to be reviewed. So, since I graduated in 1989, when Tomorrow’s Schools was introduced, there has been no point to my work

and therefore my existence. Great, thanks guys, remind me to invite you to my retirement party where I re-cap my pointless career. 4. When change comes – and it will with all the pleasantry of diarrhoea splash marks on a portaloo – primary schools will be the sad, nose-running, malnourished younger brother to the bigger secondary school sibling. It’s a classic example of change chaos that gets dumped on primary teachers but not secondary. After 1993, new curriculum statements were issued about every 18 months to primary schools. All schools had to commit teachers to go to training about the statements and regurgitate it back to the rest of their staff. The school had to then write up new curriculum programmes to accommodate these changes. The teachers who had classes all day, did this in relentless, energysapping staff meetings after school. There were seven curriculum areas to write up. There were no heads of departments or non-contact hours to help with this work. Now, when secondary heard they had to introduce NCEA in 2002, they screamed like a middle-aged man getting a back wax! Suddenly, they had extra release days given to them and the ability to close early so they could all work on this and get home to mow the lawns, feed the pet snails, try on their new socks and sandals, and have dinner while

Pedestrian bridge collapses As Florida authorities work to identify the people who died in yesterday’s catastrophic bridge collapse, state and federal investigators will begin the task of figuring out how and why the five-day-old span failed. Miami-Dade County Fire Chief Dave Downey said that his crew was using high-tech listening devices, trained sniffing dogs and search cameras in the race to find anyone still alive in the rubble. The $14.2 million pedestrian bridge was supposed to open in 2019 as a safe way for students to cross the busy road. It linked the community of Sweetwater with the campus of Florida International University. “We have to remove some of this piece by piece. It’s very unstable.” Aerial footage at the site showed a trained dog running atop fallen concrete and sniffing in the crevices for any victims. But Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez acknowledged the likelihood of finding more victims under the rubble is slim.

A brand-new pedestrian bridge near Florida International University collapsed onto a highway crushing multiple vehicles and killing several people. PHOTO AP Four people were found dead and at least nine others were injured and taken to local hospitals; officials at one point said 10 were injured. Florida Govenor Rick Scott and US Senator Marco Rubio attended an evening briefing. Rubio said the public and the families of the dead and injured deserve to know “what

went wrong”. Scott added that an investigation will get to the bottom of “why this happened and what happened”. He said that if anyone did anything wrong, “we will hold them accountable”. National Transportation Safety Board chairman Robert Sumwalt III said a team of specialists was heading to Miami

with plans to begin its investigation. Rubio, who is an adjunct professor at the school, noted the pedestrian bridge was intended to be an innovative and “one-of-a-kind engineering design”. An accelerated construction method was supposed to reduce risks to workers and pedestrians and minimise traffic disruption, the university said. Renderings showed a tall, off-centre tower with cables attached to the walkway to support it. When the bridge collapsed, the main tower had not yet been installed, and it was unclear what the builders were using as temporary supports. Robert Bea, a professor of engineering and construction management at the University of California, Berkeley, said it was too early to know exactly what happened, but the decision to use what the bridge builders called an “innovative installation” was risky, especially because the bridge spanned a heavily travelled thoroughfare. – AP

Bond film makers sued An assistant director on the James Bond films who was left with career-ending injuries after he was crushed on the set of Spectre is suing for $NZ4.8 million in damages. Terry Madden was filming in Austria when a camera truck veered off the road and crashed into him. He suffered multiple fractures, tissue damage and nerve damage in the accident. The insurers for Eon Productions, makers of the Bond films, admitted liability. But Madden is yet to receive damages and this week served proceedings in the High Court. His claim covers future loss of earnings and medical costs.

Giant US toy chain in liquidation The demise of Toys R Us will have a ripple effect on everything from toy makers to consumers to landlords. The 70-year-old retailer sought court approval to liquidate its remaining 735 stores, eliminating the jobs of some 30,000 employees while spelling the end for a chain known to generations of children and parents for its sprawling stores and Geoffrey the giraffe mascot. The closing of the company’s US stores over the coming months will finalise the downfall of the chain that succumbed to heavy debt and relentless trends that undercut its business, from online shopping to mobile games. And it will force toy makers and landlords who depended on the chain to scramble for alternatives.

There is still some hope. Toys R Us will try to bundle its Canadian business, with about 200 US stores, and find a buyer. It’s likely to also liquidate its businesses in Australia, France, Poland, Portugal and Spain. It’s already shuttering its business in the United Kingdom. That would leave it with stores in Canada, central Europe and Asia, where it could find buyers for those assets. It also controls Asian sourcing giant Li & Fung, a major supplier to Western retailers like Wal-Mart. A Fung spokesperson did not immediately reply to a request for comment. In Hong Kong, where Toys R Us has 15 stores, parents said there were few other choices in a retail market dominated

by a few big players. “If you want something like a mainstream toy shop, then Toys R Us is the only place you can go,” said Ching-yng Choi, whose home and office are both within walking distance of Toys R Us shops. “Basically either it’s Toys R Us or you go to specialised and very expensive toy shops that sell, for example, wooden toys that come from very far away countries like in Europe,” she said. Toys R Us had about 60,000 full-time and part-time employees worldwide last year. The company’s troubles have affected toy makers Mattel and Hasbro, which are big suppliers to the chain. But the likely liquidation will have a bigger impact on smaller toy makers that rely more on the chain for sales.

Toys R Us has been hurt by the shift to mobile devices taking up more play time. But steep sales declines over the holidays and thereafter were the deciding factor, said Jim Silver, editor-in-chief of toy review site TTPM.com. Toys R Us had dominated the toy store business in the 1980s and early 1990s, when it was one of the first of the “category killers” – a store totally devoted to one thing. Its scale gave it leverage with toy sellers and it disrupted general merchandise stores and momand-pop shops. Children sang along with commercials about “the biggest toy store there is”. But the company lost ground to discounters like Target and Walmart, and then to Amazon, as even nostalgic parents sought deals elsewhere. – AP

Rihanna snaps back Rihanna wiped around $US600m off Snapchat’s parent company when she criticised the messaging app for hosting an advert that appeared to make light of her history as a victim of domestic violence. Shares in Snap Inc fell as the popstar criticised the app on Instagram. “Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there!” Rihanna said, “But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess! I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb!” The singer was responding to an advert on the social media app asking users if they would rather “slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown”.

Southeast Asian leaders gather for summit Southeast Asian leaders started gathering yesterday for their first summit in Australia as the regional neighbours look for closer economic and security links and the host prime minister warned against trade protectionism. The leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, rarely meet outside their 10 member nations and the weekend summit in Sydney has caught the attention of protesters angered by human rights abuses in Southeast Asia. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been criticised for welcoming some of the lead-

ers to his hometown, including Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who have been singled out by protesters. But Turnbull is looking at ASEAN for its potential to drive free trade in the Indo-Pacific region in a way that the major economies, the United States and China, cannot without creating suspicion and division. The dual themes of the Sydney summit are security and posterity, with the threat to both posed by North Korea high on the agenda. “Open markets, together with democracy, have been two of the most powerful forces

in human history and they’ve led to worldwide growth and prosperity,” Turnbull told a business forum in Sydney on Friday. “We must face the world, not turn from it; embrace free trade, not retreat from it,” he added. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the chairman of ASEAN this year, said he feared US moves to protect domestic industries put countries “under pressure to retaliate”. Four ASEAN countries – Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam — are among the 11 who have signed up to the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

ASEAN also offers Australia a different route to the goal of an Indo-Pacific free trade agreement through the proposed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. The partnership would group ASEAN with six countries with which it already has free trade deals: Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand. Turnbull told reporters he would discuss the Rohingya with Suu Kyi when they meet. Australia had a “frank engagement” with ASEAN countries that covered a range of issues including human rights, Turnbull said. – AP

Some exciting young talent will be on show at the Mid Canterbury Tennis Centre this weekend in the annual Gala Cup. Flynn Ness, 18, is top seed in the men’s open singles while Tessa McCann, 16, is top seed in the women’s. Mid Canterbury Tennis head coach Andre van Rooyen said it was exciting to have Ness back to defend his Gala Cup title. The teenager, who boards at Christ’s College, has been playing premier grade tennis in Christchurch this summer.

He will find some stiff opposition though, with former champ Rhys Cromie the second seed. Cromie has been in good form this season, based on his club performances. Number three seed is Sam Bubb while Aidan Mitchell is the fourth seed. Bubb will be on a high after helping his Ashburton College team to the secondary schools’ tennis nationals earlier in the week. The AshColl side came a narrow third at the qualifying tournament on Monday, the top two progressing to the nationals, but was invited to attend after anoth-

er team withdrew. The nationals will be in Christchurch next week where Bubb will be joined by Tyler Leonard, Erin Connelly-Whyte and Jade Brosnahan in the mixed division. Van Rooyen said it was a great opportunity for the players to step up a level and gain experience, as well as enjoy the special atmosphere of a national event. He said the Gala Cup men’s grade had attracted 18 entries, with plenty of depth in both young and more experienced players. McCann leads the four women chasing the open women’s title, with Ashleigh Leonard at two,

Larissa Allan at three and Amelia McKeown at four. McCann, a boarder at Rangi Ruru in Christchurch, is amongst the top under 16 players in the country and van Rooyen said she was seriously talented. She won the Canterbury senior women’s open title last year and seems destined for national honours. She wouldn’t have it all her own way though, he said, with university students Leonard and Allan capable of an upset. McKeown, at 12, is in van Rooyen’s Ace tennis programme and a rising star locally. In the men’s doubles, Cromie

and Peter Leonard are top seeds, followed by Connor Brosnahan and Flynn Ness. Allan and McCann top the women’s doubles, followed by Leonard and her mum Dianna. Cromie teams up with McCann to lead the mixed doubles, followed by the father-daughter pairing of Peter and Ashleigh Leonard. Van Rooyen said a cracker of a weekend was on the cards with non-stop tennis, and spectators were welcome. Saturday’s programme includes a late-afternoon function to celebrate winning the Browning Shield recently.

■ CRICKET

Muirhead Rosebowl on the line By Matt MarkhaM

Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz

The polish has been purchased for the Pritchard Shield and the Studholme Shield, but Lauriston will be out to find cause to head off and buy another bottle of cleaner when they host the final of the Muirhead Rosebowl against Coldstream this afternoon. The final piece of the Mid Canterbury senior cricketing season goes on the line and both sides will be keen to end their season on a high. On paper, this should be an intriguing and tough to determine clash. Both sides are brilliant at their best with players who are capable of doing explosive things out in the middle and ultimately it may come down to the efforts of individuals as opposed to an entire team. Lauriston have been the benchmark for most of the season. With 10 wins from their 13 games in the longer format of the game, they’ve consistently claimed results from week-to-week and probably deserve the chance to host a final on their home territory to cap their season. For captain Bevan Richen, the season has been a great one and a result today would be the icing on the cake – but he’s most proud of the team spirit they’ve managed to build throughout the season. “We’ve got a great bunch of guys out here,” he said. “Not only great guys though, but really good cricketers too. They’ve showed up to trainings and games week in and week out and deserve every success they can get their hands on. “We’ve had to select a team each week since Christmas, that’s been the dedication the lads have shown.” On today’s final, Richen said it was a case of anything could happen. He’s fully aware of the threat that Coldstream can pose and was in no way underplaying the potential for their visitors to rock up and ruin the party. “They’re a very good side, full of very good players it’s going to be a

tough match for us. “A really tough match in fact.” On the other side of the coin, Coldstream are in a comfortable boat already in the fact that no one really expected them to be in this position. They snuck in to the semi-finals off the back of a victory against the, at times, hapless Methven and then caused a huge upset by crushing competition favourites Tech in last week’s semi-finals. Captain Richard Print didn’t mince his words either when he said what the day could bring. “Lauriston have had a great season and we’re heading out there as the underdogs for sure,” he said. “We will have to produce something pretty special to beat them, but we have the side capable of doing that I think.” The game is set down to get under way at 12.30pm and the first act of duty, the coin toss, will be one of the most critical decisions made all day.

Key players in today’s final For Lauriston . . . Alex Hooper – One of the most exciting prospects in Mid Canterbury, young Alex showed his worth in last weekend’s semifinal when he dug his side out of what looked like a losing hole. He scored an unbeaten century with the bat and then turned around and claimed five wickets with the ball to cap a stellar performance. Scott Morgan – Morgan would have to agree that, by his own usual high standards, the Muirhead Rosebowl hasn’t seen some of his best days of cricket. But, like any handy cricketer, there’s that nagging thought in the back of the mind that he’s about to turn a game on its head, whether it be an explosive innings with the bat or a soul-destroying spell with the ball.

Bevan Richen – Mr Reliable, the man with the experience and the guy who can steady the ship if things threaten to go awry. Richen will always pose a threat no matter what stage the game is at. Coldstream will be fully aware of his experienced head in tricky situations and his wicket will be vital when it comes to their time with the ball.

For Coldstream . . . Bo Houston – A steady set of shoulders at the top of the innings is always a bonus at the club cricket level and Bo usually produces exactly that. If allowed to get his eye in against a potentially lethal Lauriston bowling attack, he may well prove to be the thorn in the side with his ability to bat for long periods of time – especially when the pressure is on.

Richard Print – A lot like Morgan for Lauriston, Print has the skill set to shift the direction of the game in the space of an over. It could be through his noted hard-hitting tendencies or with his pace with the ball in hand. The performance of the Coldstream captain could be one of the determining factors of the match. Jay Houston – There’s a pretty basic fact about Jay Houston this season and it’s that if he wasn’t around there’s a high possibility that Coldstream wouldn’t be playing in today’s final. An in-form and dangerous proposition with the ball, he’s consistently troubled some of the best batsmen in the district and with the importance of a final in front of him, there’s no doubt he’ll be fired up to do more damage on a wicket that should suit his style.

■ WATERSKIING

Donaldson strong on the Yarra Ashburton-based waterskiers have been in action on Melbourne’s Yarra River as part of the four-day Moomba Waterfest. Skiers from all over the world are invited to ski at the event, having first submitted their credentials. Lana Donaldson and her younger brothers Hugh and George were part of the action, with Lana making the semi-fi-

nals of the open women’s slalom. Skiers use the Yarra, which is closed to boating traffic, competing in slalom, tricks and jumps. A special feature of the event are night jumps, which take place with a background of fireworks. The event is considered one of the biggest in world waterskiing, not only for competitors but for spectators who line the banks of the Yarra.

With temperatures varying from 20 to 35°C, challenging river currents and occasional breezes, and a programme running from early morning until dark, it is a testing event. In the women’s open slalom, Donaldson led from second off the dock till the 12th skier in series two, with a season’s personal best of 2.5 bouys on the 12m line at 55km/h.

She was stoked with the run and score, which put a lot of pressure on the following skiers. Unfortunately she couldn’t pull out a repeat performance in the semi-final to advance to the final. Hugh and George Donaldson competed in the Junior Moomba, having only just finished the Oz-Kiwi tournament in the North Island days before and

having to adjust to a different boat speed on the Yarra because of their age. Hugh came away with a bronze medal in the jump, and a silver in the night jump; capping off a good run of competition form. The season is far from over though, with a three-event tournament at Lake Hood later this month and nationals at Piarere in April.

Highlanders make two changes

Last year, going into the third game of the season the Highlanders had 13 players injured. This year it is well under half of that. Why? Is it luck or just good management? More of the former than the latter, it appears. When asked why the Highlanders had fewer players injured and the likes of the Crusaders and Chiefs have plenty of walking wounded, Highlanders assistant coach Mark Hammett said he would love to have the answer to that question. “It is a fair question and we asked ourselves that. But nothing came out of the review of last season that showed anything different. In a physical contact sport it is simply that – you end up with bad luck,” he said. “In the first eight rounds last year we were riddled by injury. The competition the way it is now, you have to use your whole squad throughout the season.” The Highlanders have only Richard Buckman (neck), Thomas Umaga Jensen (shoulder), James Lentjes (shoulder) and Dan Pryor (hamstring) out injured this week.

Tevita Li is back for the Highlanders. In contrast, the Crusaders have a swag of injured players. Kieran Read, Israel Dagg and Ryan Crotty are just some of the players who will be absent tonight. Skipper Sam Whitelock has been ruled out after developing minor concussion symptoms yesterday.

Whitelock exited the field early against the Hurricanes after failing a head injury assessment test, and despite initially recovering well, he now cannot complete the Post-Concussion Return to Play process. They have a handy replacement to call upon, with Luke Romano

now starting alongside Scott Barrett, and Quinten Strange being brought on to the bench. Matt Todd will now captain the side. The Crusaders were already without Ryan Crotty, who was also ruled out due to a concussion sustained against the Hurricanes. Crotty has been replaced by the experienced Tom Bateman in the midfield. The Highlanders have made just two changes to the starting team which beat the Stormers last week. Tevita Li comes into the starting side to replace Tevita Nabura on the left wing, while in the front row, Aki Seiuli gets the start ahead of Daniel Lienert-Brown. Hammett said Seiuli had matured as a player and deserved a starting spot. “With the front row we are aware the Crusaders have a strong forward pack, particularly in the second half. It is just a matter of mixing that experience. “Aki has had a few years now, so he is a pretty experienced member of the team. He can be destructive at scrum time, a good ball carrier, very fit and mobile. “He has learnt the game really well. He has come on from when

he was the life of the team. He is still that but now he is a pretty dedicated footballer, which is great to see.” Hammett said the side was wary of the Crusaders’ style, which revolved around its solid forward pack. “We know the Crusaders pretty well. But as old coach of mine Wayne Smith used to say ‘You can always have best guess, but you’ve got to expect specials outside of that.’ The Crusaders are a special team so we have to expect the unexpected.” Crusaders: David Havili, Seta Tamunivalu, Jack Goodhue, Tim Bateman, George Bridge, Mitch Hunt, Mitch Drummond, Jordan Taufua, Matt Todd, Heiden Bedwell-Curtis, Sam Whitelock (captain), Scott Barrett, Michael Alaalatoa, Codie Taylor, Wyatt Crockett. Reserves: Ben Funnell, Chris King, Oliver Jager, Luke Romano, Billy Harmon, Bryn Hall, Mike Delany, Manasa Mataele. Highlanders: Ben Smith (captain), Waisake Naholo, Rob Thompson, Tei Walden, Tevita Li, Lima Sopoaga, Aaron Smith, Luke Whitelock, Dillon Hunt, Liam Squire, Tom Franklin, Jackson Hemopo, Siate Tokolahi, Liam Coltman, Aki Seiuli. Reserves: Ash Dixon (cocaptain), Daniel Lienert-Brown, Kalolo Tuiloma, Shannon Frizell, Elliot Dixon, Kayne Hammington, Fletcher Smith, Matt Faddes.

A baptism of fire for Carter By Matt MarkhaM

Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz

Sean Carter’s debut season in charge of the Mid Canterbury Heartland rugby side is getting a lot more serious following the release yesterday of the draw for the 2018 competition which sees the Hammers taking on all four of the finalists in last year’s Meads Cup away from home. Mid Canterbury will play four games at home and four away during the eight rounds of the competition before the play-off stages and face the daunting task of their four games away from the Ashburton district featuring the top four teams of last year’s competition. The defending Lochore Cup champions kick off their season against last season’s Meads Cup beaten finalists, Horowhenua Kapiti in Levin before follow-up away games against Buller, South Canterbury and also old foe and defending champions, Wanganui. Mid Canterbury held a 50 per cent record at home last season but went on to win both a home semi-final and then the relocated Lochore Cup final in Methven to boost those stats. On the other side of the coin they won

three of their four away games – a result that Carter would be quite keen to repeat if possible again this season. After their first-round clash on August 25, Mid Canterbury will play their first home game of the season against another old foe in North Otago before further home matches against the West Coast, East Coast and round out the regular stage of the competition with a match against King Country. Mid Canterbury will also get first crack at the Hannan Shield, played for between South Canterbury, Mid Canterbury and North Otago. A ruling change sees the illustrious slice of silverware up for grabs in all matches, whether home or away and Mid Canterbury’s clash in Timaru with South Canterbury in round five will be the first opportunity for the shield to go on the line. The green and golds don’t play Wairarapa Bush, Poverty Bay and Thames Valley. Again, a home final in either the Meads Cup or Lochore Cup would result in a shift in venue with the Ashburton A&P Show again set down for the same date as finals weekends.

In brief

■ ATHLETICS

Another record to Mbambo Outstanding Ashburton College long distance runner Taonga Mbambo set a new record for the under 19 men’s 3000m at the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Sports this week. Mbambo hustled around the track in 9.03.65, finishing a full minute and 17 seconds ahead of the second placegetter. It was one of three records set at Aorangi Park in Timaru during the day, which featured athletes from secondary schools from Ashburton to Waimate. Mbambo’s record for the under 16 boys’ 3000m, set last year, was one to fall but he made up for it with the stellar run in his new age-group. He was also second in the 1500m. AshColl athletes chalked up 18 firsts and Mt Hutt College seven throughout the day, with the best athletes qualifying for the South Island Secondary Schools, Championships on March 23-25. In the under 14 girls AshColl’s Ella Pearson won the 800m and 1500m and came second in the 400m, while Lusunga Mbambo won the 200m and the high jump. Mia Pearson won the under 15 girls’ 80m hurdles and the high jump, while in the under 16 grade Sophie Adams won the shot put by more than a metre. She was also second in the discus and third in the javelin. Emily Armstrong was the star of the sprinters, winning the under 19 girls’ 100m, 200m and 400m and helping AshColl take second in the 4x100m relay. Emma Stagg won the long jump and triple jump. For the boys, Fononga Lisale won the under 14 javelin while Kyle Cabangun won the under 15 100m. Ben Jackson took out the under 16 high jump while Ben Donald won the javelin. In the under 19 grade, Keegan Gentle won the 100m from team-mate Elyh McKibbon. Anthony van Asperen won the 200m and 400m for athletes with a disability, while Delta Taeauga won the shot put and discus. For Mt Hutt College, Briana Gaze-Inia won the under 14 triple jump, while Courtney Elliott won the under 15 3000m and Monique Johnson the triple jump. Faith Scott won the under 16 high jump with a leap of 140m. Jack McKenzie took out the under 14 1500m and 3000m titles, while Charlie Brown won the under 15 triple jump.

Cat adds to woes Turkish side Besiktas have been hit with multiple UEFA charges following their 3-1 loss at home to Bayern Munich. The game, which ended with Bayern claiming an 8-1 aggregate victory and a place in the Champions League quarter-finals, was halted by referee Michael Oliver early in the second half after a cat ran onto the field. This feline interruption saw Besiktas charged with ‘insufficient organisation’, while the club’s other alleged offences involved ‘throwing objects’ and ‘stairways blocked’. All three issues will be investigated at a hearing on May 31 when Besiktas could be banned from European competition from the beginning of next season. - NZME

Lacklustre starts Leading Kiwi golfers Lydia Ko and Danny Lee have both made forgettable starts to their latest tournaments in the United States. Ko was in a tie for 102nd when darkness halted play at the Founders Cup in Phoenix, Arizona after opening with a two-over 74 yesterday (NZT). Lee’s difficulties on the PGA Tour continued as he shot a four-over 76 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida. Sharing 104th place, he faces a struggle to make the cut, let alone reel in a star-studded leading pack headed by 64 from Swede Henrik Stenson. - NZN

Former PGA champion Jimmy Walker, who wasn’t even planning to be at Bay Hill until he mixed up the dates for a trip to Augusta National, holed a wedge from 132 yards for eagle on No. 18 that gave him a 5-under 67 and a one-shot lead over Woods, Patrick Reed and Byeong Hun An. The action never stopped. The loudest cheers were around Woods. - NZME

Warriors reject offer

■ RUGBY LEAGUE

No one gave Kidwell critical World Cup document Kiwis coach David Kidwell was not provided with the strategically designed ‘High Level Kiwis Campaign Plan’ ahead of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. That was one of the many scathing findings of the independent review into the Kiwis’ failed World Cup campaign which found a lack of leadership and expertise across the NZRL organisation. The review – led by sports lawyer Tim Castle and former Bulldogs and Netball New Zealand boss Raelene Castle – was charged with examining the Kiwis’ ill-fated performance at last year’s World Cup, which culminated in historic losses to Tonga and Fiji. The findings were released yesterday at Rugby League House in Auckland where review panellist Tim Castle, NZRL chairman Reon Edwards and NZRL acting CEO Hugh Martyn addressed the media. The review’s findings highlighted a lack of direction and

poor decision-making throughout the leadership structure at New Zealand Rugby League. Some of the significant findings included: ■ A complete lack of proven high performance sport expertise within the NZRL organisation and its supporting structures. ■ A systemic failure of senior NZRL leadership to identify those problems ■ The Kiwis’ campaign was disadvantaged by the NZRL appointment of an inexperienced head coach in David Kidwell ■ NZRL let down Kidwell in not providing him with a carefully and strategically designed High Level Kiwis Campaign plan. Castle identified the complete lack of proven high performance sport expertise within the NZRL organisation as the most alarming

findings of the review. The damning findings were also particularly critical of NZRL in their appointment of head coach David Kidwell, who was deemed as inexperienced. The findings also found that Kidwell attempted to implement too much in a short space of time and treated the World Cup as a test instead of the pinnacle of the Kiwis four year calendar. “NZRL let down Head Coach David Kidwell specifically in not providing him with the carefully and strategically designed 2014 – 2017 High Level Kiwis Campaign Plan,” said the High Level Findings. “We record that in our view the Head Coach should have, upon his appointment asked for and insisted on being provided with that High Level Plan. David Kidwell acknowledged that indeed he should have done this but did not do so. “We consider that his failing

in this regard was unsatisfactory. It does not however, in our view, excuse the failure of NZRL senior leadership to provide its Kiwis Head Coach with that High Level Plan.” The status of David Kidwell as coach remains up in the air but the report’s findings is likely to end any chance of his reappointment. “Disappointing as it was, the Kiwis 2017 loss could ultimately be for the best for the game,” said NZRL Board Chair Reon Edwards. “This is a good wake-up call and an opportunity for a fresh start. “While Tim and Raelene’s report identifies very clearly where things went wrong, importantly they have provided the NZRL a solid framework to help us deliver on our high performance requirements, improve our selection processes and ensure we vastly improve our planning and communication.” - NZME

Negotiations with a TonganAmerican consortium to buy the Warriors almost collapsed but frantic talks mean a deal could be finalised within days. Warriors owner Eric Watson and Hawaiian politician Richard Fale’s TonganAmerican group were unable to agree on a price for the Aucklandbased franchise during lengthy talks that ended when a formal offer of $22 million was rejected. - NZME

Cullen out, injured Silver Ferns defender Kayla Cullen has been ruled out of next week’s Taini Jamison Trophy with a knee injury. A regular starter at wing defence, Cullen is set to be monitored over the next two weeks, with the Silver Ferns medical team expecting her to make a full recovery in time for next month’s Commonwealth Games. She will be replaced for the four-day Taini Jamison series by Central Pulse midcourter Claire Kersten, while Maia Wilson has been called in as cover for fellow shooters Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Maria Folau, who are both managing various niggles. - NZME

Allan hits the 1000 mark Tony Allan’s long wait for a milestone victory has come to an end. The Melbourne Cup-winning jockey’s comeback to riding this year was crowned at Te Aroha on Wednesday when he rode the 1000th New Zealand winner of his career. Allan made the trip north from Levin for just one ride and his dedication was rewarded when he was successful aboard the Clint Isdale-trained Aigne in a 2200m maiden. “It’s a relief and it couldn’t have come at a nicer place than Te Aroha,” Allan said. The 51-year-old won the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on giant New Zealand mare Empire Rose in 1988 and in 2005 bowed out after racking up 998 wins. He moved to Japan that year to work as a track rider, which he said allowed him to work through some personal issues, and following a stint in Sydney working for Peter and Paul Snowden he returned home in May. Allan rode his first winner back on Mr Cool Boy at Waverley in June and, despite a lean spell since, he never doubted his own ability. “To get to 1000 wins was always the goal and I’m happy to have done it,” he said. “I’ve always believed I could do it, I’m very happy with my riding.” – NZ Racing Desk

A shift of focus Tony Pike’s focus with Treasure has turned to Australia after a foot abscess forced the filly’s withdrawal from Saturday’s Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham. “We got close with her, but not close enough,” the Cambridge trainer said. “It’s a shame as I thought she was a big chance. She’ll probably be sound as a bell on Monday or Tuesday so we’ll look to Sydney.

Kiwis to the fore Three New Zealand-bred gallopers figure prominently in the latest Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. The Hong Kong-based trio of Beauty Generation, D B Pin and Werther are all rated 119 to share seventh spot. The Longines rankings are headed by the American galloper Gun Runner and the champion mare Winx, both sharing a rating of 129.

Freshened up Lucyinrio aiming for the top Lucyinrio (right) opens a Group One preparation today following a luckless two-start Melbourne campaign in the spring. The stakes-performed mare makes her first appearance for four months when she tackles the Listed Te Akau Racing Lightning Handicap (1200m). “She’s going well, although I would have liked to have got a trial into her but Foxton was cancelled,” trainer Kylie Little said. “She’s been working well so we’ll have a crack and she normally races well first-up.” Lucyinrio’s autumn target is the Gr.1 Fiber Fresh New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Te Aroha, a race in which she finished eighth last season and only three lengths from the winner Charmont.

In brief

“We’ve planned three races and after Saturday she will step up to 1400m and then to the girls’ race at Te Aroha,” Little said. Lucyinrio earned a trip to Australia last year after finishing runner-up in the Gr.3 Red Badge

Sprint at Hastings, her second black type placing following a third in the Gr.2 Westbury Classic (1400m). She was unplaced from wide draws in both the Maybe Mahal Stakes (1400m) at Flemington

and the Gr.3 Summoned Stakes (1500m) at Sandown. “Everything that could go wrong did, but we learned a lot,” Little said. The Opaki horsewoman will also have stable newcomer Ballybay in Saturday’s Lightning Handicap. “I got him 12 days before he ran second at Hastings,” Little said. “He likes Trentham and he’s been working with Lucyinrio and both have been going well.” Formerly with Shane Brown, Ballybay has won seven races, two of them over 1000m on the Wellington course. “It will be interesting to see how he goes and as an older horse if he can get over a bit further,” Little said. – NZ Racing Desk

LA filly heading toward the Oaks Quality filly Semari has put herself into Gr.1 Australian Oaks (2400m) contention after her impressive win in the N W Kelly Plumbing Class 1 Handicap (2000m) at Racing.com Park on Thursday. The three-year-old filly won easily despite having to sit parked three wide for the majority of the race. “The barrier draw didn’t help,” Little Avondale Stud principal Sam Williams said. “She has gone out and won really well, she is a pretty smart filly with a very good turn of foot.

Eagle Bay one to follow Champion trainer Chris Waller isn’t expecting fireworks from the New Zealand-bred Eagle Bay at Rosehill today, but he’s tipping him as a horse to follow. “You’d think the 1350m might be a bit sharp for him, especially against the Australian sprinters, but he’s certainly one to watch out for,” he said. “He’s won three out of four this preparation, his three wins have come on a big track at Trentham over a mile.” Eagle Bay was previously trained at Stratford by Aidan Schumacher and hasn’t raced since he won for the fourth time in his nine start career at Wellington in January. - NZ Racing Desk

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Anticipation can enhance or detract from an experience. The wait can make the experience seem more amazing, or, underwhelming. Before you play the waiting game, calculate your odds. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Take the relationship on your terms, not the other person’s. Hopefully your terms match up pretty well so you don’t have to make a big deal of this. But if it happens that you have to choose, choose yourself. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll prove your value to others then add more value and then double that. It’s really not for them. This is like the reps a bodybuilder does to get into top form. Your reps are building your character. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The way to grab the brass ring is to take a calculated and confident leap. Don’t lunge for it: You may lose your balance. If you’re not quite ready this time, let it pass. Wait until it comes around again. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’re getting increasingly invested in a casual arrangement, and it’s time to make sure you’re getting something back. Think about what’s fair, and then think about what you really want, fair or not. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): For the majority, memory is among the more imperfect record-keeping systems. And even though yours is better than most, don’t rely on memory for what’s precious to you. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): It’s ugly when the privileged undervalue their gifts. You certainly wouldn’t want to commit that crime. (You might be surprised who sees you as privileged.) Don’t devalue what you have with over modesty. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Your favourite relationships of the weekend will be ones that promise excitement, fun, connection and mutual respect. Actually, they don’t even have to promise: An implication will be enough. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): While some scientific evidence suggests that enlarging your social circle may lengthen your life, other studies point to the necessity of solitude. Either way, love is still the answer. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The energy of judging people is rotten regardless of the semantics. The verbiage is irrelevant because it all boils down to the same tone of superiority. Leave the conversation. Go where you feel the love. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’d rather not give the situation a definition or label yet. The fun you’re having is contagious, and your playful spirit keeps it continuous as well. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You are open to the gift of intuition and will be frequently and boldly guided by divine forces. Through this month, keep asking your higher self what the most advantageous next step might be.
