Spending money wins elections By Sue Newman

More than $40,000 was spent in October’s local body elections by people chasing seats around the Ashburton District Council meeting table. And for most it appeared the more they spent on raising their profile the greater number of votes they received. With the numbers in on candidate expenditure Neil Brown, who won the district’s mayoralty race in something of a voting landslide, spent significantly more on his campaign than his three rivals. His campaign expenses ran to

$10,859, well within the $20,000 limit allowed for councils with a population the size of the district. That investment earned Brown one-third of the votes cast, for the mayoralty, 4446. Brown’s expenditure was mainly on newspaper advertising and signs. Second placed runner Tony Todd spent $5698 on his campaign and secured 3753 votes. Sitting mayor Donna Favel, however, spent just $3870 on her campaign and received just 2400 votes. The lowest polling candidate Leen Braam’s return has yet to be processed. The majority of Favel’s expenditure

was on flyers, hoardings and radio advertising, while Todd’s was heavily weighted towards newspaper advertising. With Braam’s returns not available, it is unclear how much he spent chasing one of the five urban councillor seats, but second highest poller, John Falloon spent just over $5000 on his campaign, the highest of any councillor.

Last chance to hand in firearms By Jaime Pitt-MacKay

and September,” they said. “A number of people we spoke to at events have travelled from outside the district because they wished to be anonymous or just felt more comfortable handing in outside their local area.” The Ashburton District hosted four events; one in Ashburton, two in Rakaia and one in Methven. A total of 1221 parts were also handed in, all by a total of 262 people. Despite the buy-back ending on Friday, the Council of Licenced Firearms Owners (COLFO) estimates that police have only recovered 28 per cent of the total number of newly prohibited firearms. COLFO spokesperson Nicole McKee said they have estimated there is a total of 170,000 banned firearms in New Zealand, following an investigation of records from 11 firearms distributors and Customs imports. The announcement supports the higher limit released by police earlier this year. While COLFO has always encouraged licensed firearms owners to comply with the law, McKee says she understands why some people are choosing not to engage with the process. “The entire approach has been adversarial from the get-go. More firearms banned than they claimed, poor compensation, export bans ruining the opportunity of selling up valuable collections, and police destroying prized and historic firearms,” she said.

Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

There are only a couple of days left for the prohibited firearms buy-back and Ashburton Police are urging people to get in to the station to hand over their firearms before it closes at the end of the week. The last day for the buy-back is this Friday, and Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said the Ashburton Police Station will be processing firearms up until 4pm that day. “Any person who is unable to make the station by 4pm will have the option of attending the Timaru or Christchurch Station as their counter is open 24hrs,” he said. While Jenkins did not have a total number of firearms handed in to the Ashburton station, he said the front counter had been very busy with a constant stream of people bringing in firearms. The last buy-back event in the Ashburton District was held in September, and at the time a police spokesperson said they could not be sure that all the prohibited firearms in the district had been collected as it was common for people to travel outside of their own regions to attend the events. A total of 397 prohibited firearms have been handed in at collection events across the Ashburton District this year. “The Canterbury Firearms Collection Team have held four events in the Ashburton District across July, August

From P1 Third highest poller Carolyn Cameron spent $3611, the second highest for an urban candidate. Diane Rawlinson was the fourth polling urban councillor but her expense return has yet to be processed. Fifth urban councillor Angus McKay spent $2117 on his

Bell, $1172. On top of those declared expenses all candidates paid a $200 nomination fee which is refunded after their expense details are filed. To receive a refund, however, a candidate must poll not less than 25 per cent of the lowest successful candidate’s votes. All

candidates for Ashburton District issues will receive a refund. All expense details must be filed within 55 days of election results being declared. Spending limits were $20,000 for mayoral candidates, $14,000 Ashburton ward and $7000 for the eastern and western wards.

Speeds set to drop on many of district’s roads By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

A raft of new speed limits proposed for Ashburton District roads will see motorists forced to change their driving habits. The council last reviewed speed limits in 2013/2014 and the proposed changes have been made taking into account both Land Transport legislation and the requests of the community. Racecourse, Farm, Allens and Carters roads are tipped to change from their current 70km/h limit to either 50 or 60 km/h with the new 60km/h limit extending down Racecourse Road into the open road speed area, for 52 metres beyond Farm Road. Speed changes will impact heavily on motorists in Ashburton’s north-east with reductions planned for most 70km/h roads, one to 60km/h but most to 50km/h. Open road speed limits may be removed from Morris, Murdochs, Works and part of Company roads as well as JB Cullen Drive and Fairfield Road West. These will become 60km/h zones but JB Cullen Drive will have a speed limit of 50km/h. A number of Ashburton’s residential streets are likely to see traffic slowed to just 30km/h most in the Braebrook and Lochlea subdivisions as well as several streets in the Whiteoak subdivision in Tinwald. Speed reductions are planned in Tinwald on Carters, Wilkins, Tarbottons, Hollands, Fords and Frasers roads. Lake Hood will see some sig-

their outskirts. Tomorrow district councillors will consider the speed limit changes. If they give them the nod they will be put out for public consultation in early February.

In just one week about 140 people will be part of the largest Christmas celebration in the Ashburton District, the Community Christmas Lunch. Planning for the event began many months ago on organiser Ann Allott’s dining room table. And with just one week to go, the boxes are all ticked and the scene is set for an event that provides a giant dollop of festive goodwill to people who may otherwise have been spending Christmas Day alone, or perhaps with a dining table short on festive fare. The food is organised, Danny Lysaght caterer extraordinaire will be in charge of the kitchen and all that’s needed are a few willing hands to help plate up meals and deliver these to diners, Allott said. “We’ve got a good core group of volunteers, but it would be good to have a few more,” she said. While registrations have officially closed at 140, the door will always be open to people who would still like to be part of the occasion. Every year there are people who simply turn up at noon wanting to be part of the event and while no one is ever turned away, knowing numbers means there is always a place at the table, laid and ready for each guest, she said. “We also like to have name tags ready for people so they feel welcome.” Anyone who would like to help with food service for the lunch or who would like to reserve a seat should call Allott on 308 0333.

Frank’s lights are back in business By Heather Mackenzie

photographers@theguardian.co.nz

Christmas time in Methven would not be the same without Frank Sandys and his Christmas lights. Sandys tried to retire from the light show circuit, but when push came to shove he couldn’t do it. A couple of years ago he thought his time of clambering over his roof with a trail of tangled Christmas lights behind him was up. He even went so far as to sell off some of his precious collection. However, one visit to Ashburton to look at the light display was enough to inspire him to dust off his ladder. “I had to get home and put them up again,” he said. Adding to his inspiration to unpack the extension cords was his desire to do something nice for his daughter who was coming home from America. It worked, when she saw the house all lit up she said “Oh Dad. I knew you would do something like this.” That clinched it, his retirement was over and his house

was back on the Christmas lights display map. Selling off his lights earlier in the year meant space in the garage, so Sandys purchased a large inflatable Santa fire truck, and a matching Santa helicopter. “The helicopter looks a bit like the Westpac one, so they can go together in my emergency vehicle display area,” he said New for this year and adding a local flavour to his display will be a seat from the Mt Hutt triple chair. “I will make a light walkway that ends at the chair.” He hinted that Santa himself may make use of the newly installed chair on Christmas Eve. Donations collected at the gate will go to the Methven Fire Brigade. This year they are looking to restore a Series One Land-Rover, gifted to them by Eric Maw. “The plan is it make it into a fire engine like the one we had years ago.” Sandys plans to switch the lights on at around 9.30pm tonight and they will be switched off on Boxing Day night.

Judge offers opportunity to move forward

“You have the opportunity to put these charges behind you,” was the message Judge Joanna Maze had for Joshua Hurst who was sentenced on four charges in the Ashburton District Court on Monday. Hurst had gone to The Warehouse on two different days and stole a headlamp, torch and perfume with a combined value of around $450. He also stole a gas butane torch worth $107 from Mitre 10 Mega. He was challenged, but left the stores without paying. Hurst also admitted his part in a breakin at the Ashburton Racecourse on the night of August 15, when the function room was broken into and boxes of beer worth $150 were stolen from a storeroom. Judge Maze was told that Hurst has a work opportunity in Auckland that will allow him to distance himself from past associates and a history of drug abuse. Due to him being declared unfit to

work which ruled out community work, Maze sentenced Hurst to nine months’ supervision and ordered him to pay reparation. Waitai Herewini will have to serve 100 hours of community work for unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and for unpaid fines after appearing before Judge Maze. He pleaded guilty to unlawfully taking a motor vehicle that had been lent to him and he failed to return the vehicle on the agreed date. There was no damage to the vehicle and police saw no reason to pursue reparation and Judge Maze sentenced him to community work, adding extra for remitting a number of outstanding fines and court fees totalling around $8742. He was also convicted and discharged on a charge of driving while forbidden and breaches of bail.

Men deny kidnap, murder charges NZME Five men charged with killing Hawke’s Bay man Codi Wilkinson have denied charges of murder and kidnapping, with their identities still subject to an interim order suppressing publication. The not-guilty pleas were entered when the men, aged from 30 to 49, appeared yesterday in the High Court in Palmerston North, where it was a revealed a trial is unlikely to happen before February 2021, more than 15 months after they were arrested and charged relating to the death of the father-of-two and Mongrel Mob member. Wilkinson was found dead, with exten-

sive injuries, on a property at Bunnythorpe, between Ashhurst and Feilding on September 27, five days after he would have turned 27. He had not been seen by his partner, family or friends for more than a fortnight, although he had not been reported missing. Charges laid in the last week of November reveal the alleged offences are believed to have happened on or before September 12. Those in court are each charged with kidnapping and murder, and also with kidnapping and wounding a second man with intent to injure, and with participating in an organised criminal group.

Suppression continues NZME

Christmas magic in Mayfield Christmas arrived in Mayfield on Saturday when the Marvellous Little Christmas Market opened for business. A Hamilton man charged with the murder of an Australian tourist will face trial next year after pleading not guilty. The 23-year-old was also granted continued name suppression when he appeared via audio visual link in the High Court at Hamilton yesterday. His lawyer, Sheila Cameron, successfully applied for the suppression extension citing her client’s fragile mental health state. The man is charged with the murder of Sean McKinnon, 33, who was allegedly shot in the campervan he was sharing with partner Bianca Buckley while parked in the Te Toto Gorge in August. Members of McKinnon’s family were in court for the appearance and to hear the not guilty plea entered. The man also denies charges of robbery causing grievous bodily harm, threatening to kill, and driving while disqualified. A trial date for three weeks was also set down for November 16, next year. Crown prosecutor Jacinda Foster said they had no issue with the continued suppression but depending on the result of a follow-up S38 psychiatric report, they could oppose it continuing.

OUR VIEW

Profile raising helps to win votes A

s Kiwis we’re a pretty modest lot We do whatever it is we do without expecting too much in return, just a decent wage if it’s work, and the odd thank you when we help someone out. But there are times when we need to make a bit of a song and dance, when it pays to tell the rest of the world what we’re about and that we might even be pretty darned good at what we do. And one of those times is when we put our names in the hat as candidates for election to a board, a committee, or as a leader for an organisation. That’s never more true than when it comes to local body elections.

The amount of money that can be spent raising your profile and chasing votes is considerable – $20,000 for a mayor, $14,000 for Ashburton’s urban ward and $7000 for the two rural wards. None of our candidates, however, came anywhere near those numbers this year, but profile raising is what elections are all about and maybe ours don’t do enough of it. The only candidate to get it

close to right was Mayor Neil Brown. He spent half of what he was allowed, he got the votes and won. Not all the other runners did the same and perhaps they got what they paid – or didn’t pay for – at the end of the day. It was the same story when it came to councillors. Those who sold their story won voters’ hearts. Election 2019 is done and dusted, expenses have been filed and the story told, but there might be lessons to be learned from this year’s event that could change the fortunes of others in future years. Yes, not everyone can afford to fork out big dollars on an election campaign, but the evidence

is pretty clear that, if you do, you could well stand a better chance, by simple name and face recognition alone. The system in play with election expenses ensures absolute accountability and provides the best possible checks to prevent a flush of backers’ funds boosting any particular candidate’s chances. None of the Ashburton candidates needed to fill in the donations box, showing they’d received a donation – anonymous or otherwise – of more than $1500. This is about ensuring no one has backing that could ultimately influence how they conduct their business around a council table if elected. Our candidates just had

straight forward expenses. Elections in our district are good, clean battles fought on very even playing fields. Everyone has the opportunity to buy advertisements, erect hoardings, deliver flyers, stand on corners pitching their cause or signwrite their cars. We’ve never had post election accusations tossed about dodgy dealings and donations during campaigns such as the accusations being thrown at Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel by an unsuccessful challenger. Thank God when the votes are counted our losing candidates don’t stick around and throw mud, rather they graciously move on with their lives.

Presents for our political leaders By David Cormack

I

t’s the last sitting week of the year for parliament, so it would be my last chance to get all the political leaders’ Christmas presents to them. If I was buying Simon Bridges a Christmas present, and it’s probably important to clarify I sure as hell won’t be, I think I’d get him a set of Garbage Pail Kids’ cards. You might think I want to get him those because he’s a trash person who needs to get in the bin, but you’re wrong. I want to get him a set of Garbage Pail Kids’ cards because when I was at school having a set of those cards made you so much cooler. It didn’t matter how unpopular or unlikeable you were, owning a set of these bad boys would make people like you. And if there’s one thing that Simon needs it’s finding something that will make people like him. I might also get him a mirror. Again you could think this is because I think Simon is vain and loves to admire his own Brylcreem coiffed hair, but no, that’s not it. It’s so he can keep an eye on Judith Collins as she lurks behind him with a knife, ready to plunge it into his back at any moment. For the Prime Minister I’d probably give her a few of those reusable shopping bags. If she’s anything like me she probably leaves them all at home whenever she goes to the supermarket, and she also needs all the help she can get carrying this Government. I also think a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle would be a good Christmas present for her. On the one hand, it’s a slightly tricky thing to do, but on the other I think it’s something she would definitely achieve. James Shaw is a tricky one to buy for. He doesn’t exude much of anything. I think I’d probably get James a garish multi-coloured novelty tie. It would mean he could wear a tie that wasn’t that bloody green one he wears every day, and wearing it would probably be about the most exciting thing he’s let happen to himself in years. I’d also get him a piece of Che Guevara merchandise, maybe a t-shirt with Che’s face on it? It’s

the perfect reminder of the Green Party’s leftist tendencies, while also being a commodified money-making product of late-stage capitalism. Perfect for the Green Party member you’re worried could go blue. Marama will get tickets for a cruise trip so that she can experience a pleasant time on a boat, to balance out her time protesting on the Women’s Boat to Gaza which was intercepted by the Israeli navy. I’ll also splurge out on some Xero shares for her. When she ran for leader she promised she’d work hard on holding Labour to account, I haven’t seen a bunch of that, so instead of holding Labour to account, she can profit from an accountancy company! Now that Winston is suddenly the media’s best friend and saviour, I’d buy him his pick of the media outlets currently up for sale. I’m sure he’d act with its best interests at heart and keep it running fairly and free of editorial interference. I was thinking it might be time for him to also try heroin. Because a man who seems to be in as good a shape as he is despite a life of smoking, drinking copious amounts of whisky and eating all the steaks that the Green Parrot will serve, can probably survive anything. And the heroin high might make him more amenable to Andrew Little’s ideas. David Seymour’s present is pretty easy. I’d get him a copy of Golriz Ghahraman’s upcoming memoir Know Your Place. If the title doesn’t send a strong enough message, then maybe reading about a young woman who fled her homeland, landed in New Zealand and grew up to be a lawyer and MP despite being a woman of colour facing all the disadvantages that come with that, will impress upon him the importance of diversity and how making sure that angry old racists get their angry racist free speech and right to own military semi-automatics protected is potentially not the best idea. I hope that all the politicians who leave Wellington this week and return home have a Christmas befitting the year they’ve had. If you’ve been nice, you get a nice Christmas.

If you’re been awful, have an awful one! I hope they reflect on what sort of country they want New Zealand to be, and reflect on what sort of politician they want to be thought of as and then come back in 2020 and don’t run a revolting cesspool of a campaign for next year’s election like we saw in the UK, Australia, and the United States.

New law sparks protests AP Thousands of university students flooded the streets of India’s capital, while a southern state government led a march and demonstrators held a silent protest in the northeast yesterday against a new law giving citizenship to non-Muslims who entered India illegally to flee religious persecution in neighbouring countries. The protests in New Delhi followed a night of violent clashes between police and demonstrators at Jamia Millia Islamia University. People who student organisers said were not students set three buses on fire and police stormed the university library, firing tear gas at students crouched under desks. Members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party said opposition parties were using the students as pawns. Modi’s government says the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which was approved by Parliament last week, will make India a safe haven for Hindus and other religious minorities in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. But critics say the legislation, which for the first time conditions Indian citizenship on religion, violates the secular constitution of the world’s

Hemsworth shocks A young bride got the shock of her life when she bumped into her celebrity idol Liam Hemsworth on her wedding day. Katie and Shane had just tied the knot on the Gold Coast when they stepped into the Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club for a drink with their family and friends last month. Then Katie’s sister pointed out the Hunger Games star sitting in the corner of the room. Hemsworth was enjoying a drink with a friend and was “such a gentleman” when he found himself in the middle of the wedding celebration. He happily posed for photos with the couple, and Katie was “in shock” and “over the moon”. At Jamia Millia Islamia University, thousands stood outside the locked-down campus. Inside, hundreds of students took part in a peaceful sit-in, holding placards denouncing the injuries of dozens of students the night before. Mujeeb Ahmad, a 21-yearold Arabic major, returned to

campus to join the sit-in and retrieve the book bag he lost fleeing the library, where he had been studying for exams. “We thought we were safe in the library,” he said, adding that he and others had locked the library doors from the inside. Policemen broke them down, and at least one officer fired tear gas, he said, holding up an empty canister he said

About 2000 people including students and families with young children gathered at New Delhi’s iconic India Gate memorial to protest the Citizenship Amendment Act and reports of students demonstrating against the law who were beaten by police at several university campuses.

Bail granted after six murder trials, 23 years NZME For more than two decades, Curtis Flowers has returned over and over again to a court in Mississippi to face prosecution for the brutal killings of four people in a small-town furniture store where he once worked. In the first three trials, Flowers, a black man, was found guilty by nearly all-white juries. Each of those convictions was overturned by the state Supreme Court. In the fourth and fifth trials, juries failed to reach verdicts. And in the sixth and most recent trial, Flowers was found guilty and sentenced to death. This time, his appeals ascended to the US Supreme Court, and again the conviction was tossed. On Monday, after chastising prosecutors for not resolving the case that Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. wrote was “likely one of a kind,” a judge granted Flowers bail, offering him the gift of freedom for the first time in 23 years. It was a long-awaited victory in a case that has attracted global attention, consumed much of Flowers’ adult life and tested the limits of his family’s

She was 3 years old when he was arrested and was raised by an aunt. As he set bail at $US250,000, Judge Joseph H. Loper Jr. warned prosecutors – who have neither decided whether to try the case for the seventh time nor responded to motions filed by defence lawyers – that if their inaction contin-

ued, “the state of Mississippi will reap the whirlwind”. He also noted the absence of Doug Evans, the white district attorney who has tried the case six times. “I don’t know why he’s not here,” Loper said. “I expected him to be here.” Last month, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund filed a federal class-action lawsuit against Evans, accusing him of racial discrimination through “a practice of striking black jurors with per-

emptory challenges at an extraordinary rate”. The latest conviction against Flowers was thrown out after the US Supreme Court ruled that Evans had violated Flowers’ constitutional rights by pushing to keep black jurors off the panels deciding his fate. (In the six trials for Flowers, 61 of the 72 jurors were white.) In the majority opinion, Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh wrote, “Equal justice under law requires a criminal trial free of racial discrimination in the jury selection process.” By pursuing a “relentless, determined effort to rid the jury of black individuals,” Kavanaugh wrote, the state wanted to try Flowers “ideally before an allwhite jury”. “This case is unprecedented in the history of the American legal system,” Rob McDuff, a lawyer for Flowers, said as he laid out his arguments in court Monday. The quadruple murder and robbery of the Tardy Furniture store in July 1996 rattled Winona, a small town about a two-hour drive from Memphis. In the many years since, it continues to hold a tight grip on the community and its 5000 residents.

‘Women should thank me’ Harvey Weinstein defended himself as a pioneer in advancing the careers of women in the film industry in the wake of scores of sexual misconduct allegations that launched the #MeToo movement. “I feel like the forgotten man,’’ Weinstein said in an interview. “I made more movies directed by women and about women than any filmmaker, and I’m talking about 30 years ago. I’m not talking about now when it’s vogue. I did it first! I pioneered it!” “It all got eviscerated because of what happened,’’ Weinstein said in the interview. “My work has been forgotten.’’

Watch out Baby Yoda Baby Yoda better watch out because Poe Dameron is out to get him. Maybe not Poe Dameron as such, but certainly the man who plays him on screen in Star Wars movies The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and the upcoming The Rise of Skywalker. The rest of the world may have fallen in love with the adorable entity dubbed Baby Yoda but officially credited as The Child in Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian, but Oscar Isaac isn’t buying into the hype. “I’m not into the Baby Yoda thing,” Isaac told news.com.au, before adding with gusto, “Kill it! Stamp it! Smoosh it!”

Westpac dealt further blow By Alexis Carey

ment of claim contained “serious allegations” that “question the prudential standing of Australia’s second largest bank”. “While Westpac is financially sound, there are potentially substantial gaps in risk governance that need to be closed,” he said. “Given the nature of the matters raised by Austrac, the number of alleged breaches and the period of time over which they occurred, this will necessarily be an extensive and potentially lengthy investigation.” APRA has vowed to impose that increase in capital requirements of $A500m “to reflect the heightened operational risk profile of the bank”, which brings the total operational risk capital add-ons that Westpac is required to hold to $A1 billion. It will also launch an “extensive review programme” focused on Westpac’s risk governance which will include risk management, accountability, remuneration and culture. APRA’s investigation will coincide with one being carried out by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), as well as Austrac’s legal proceedings.

scandal “was not playing out as a high street issue” and that the Westpac board “don’t need to overcook this” because “for people in mainstream Australia going about their daily lives, this is not a major issue”. Now, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) – the banking regulator – has ordered Westpac to set aside an additional $A500 million ($520m) in capital as an investigation gets under way that could end in hefty fines or the

disciplinary action of high-ranking staffers. APRA is looking into whether Westpac breached the Banking Act – including the Banking Executive Accountability Regime (BEAR) – and will examine its conduct in the lead-up to the Austrac allegations as well as its efforts to fix the problems after they were uncovered. In a statement, Westpac confirmed it would co-operate with APRA.

“Westpac accepts the gravity of the issues presented by Austrac,” Westpac Group’s chairman Lindsay Maxsted said yesterday. “As previously stated, these shortcomings are unacceptable and we are determined to urgently fix these issues and lift our standards. “We will provide our full support to APRA through its investigation and review.” Meanwhile, APRA deputy chair John Lonsdale said Austrac’s state-

to be swapped to be charged. The bikes have a 25km/h speed limit. Greenacre said Uber was confident the bikes would be popular with New Zealanders, and would increase its fleet numbers if required. “If you look at the scooter schemes in New Zealand, they’ve been really successful from a numbers point of view so I can’t see why bikes are going to be any different.” In cities like Paris and Seattle the company has upwards of 5000 e-bikes on the streets at any given time. The company starts relatively small with bike numbers when it launches into a new market but scales up with demand, Greenacre said. “When we put them on the road we don’t want them to be sitting there not getting used, that’s not good for us, so we ramp up as demand builds – we don’t want to flood the streets with lots of bikes.” Greenacre said the company chose to launch its e-bikes in New Zealand ahead of Australia as the country was “further advanced down the micro mobility path” and from a regulation stand point. The company intends for the

bikes to be used between four and seven times per day, and hopes they will appeal to those who are not fans of its scooters. “E-bikes and scooters appeal to very different groups of people for very different journeys. What we’ve found overseas is that a lot people use these for commuting and longer distances, especially when hills are involved as they travel faster. “Some people are bike people and some are scooter people just by preference so we think by having both we add to the accessibility for micro mobility for a bigger portion of the population.” Longer term, Jump by Uber wants to expand its e-bike business into Wellington, where it already operates its e-scooters. Greenacre said he would like to see the e-bikes in all major cities in New Zealand. Greenacre also said he expected sales of e-bikes to increase in Auckland once Jump by Uber e-bikes launched in Auckland, as it had happened in other markets. “E-bikes have exploded globally, we think that dockless e-bike systems have been a part of that but I think there is an explosion that is happening by itself.”

By Aimee Shaw Uber is set to expand its business in New Zealand from February next year, when it rolls out its fleet of electric bikes in Auckland under the brand name Jump. The San Francisco-based ridesharing company was last month granted a licence by Auckland Council to operate both its Jump e-bikes and electric scooters. Jump general manager of New Zealand, Henry Greenacre, said the company was yet to finalise the exact date that the bikes business would launch but said all 655 dockless bikes were expected to be on the streets by March. Uber operates its Jump e-bikes business in Europe and North America, currently. Its launch into New Zealand will be its first in the Asia Pacific region. Uber acquired Manhattan-founded bike-share start up Jump, which began as Social Bicycles, last year for a reported $200 million. The company had been operating for about 10 years prior to the acquisition. Like regular bikes, you cycle on e-bikes but as you do the motor kicks in and takes you further (a bit like swimming with flippers). The e-bikes are heavy duty, 33 kilograms in weight with a 300W motor, and like the company’s e-scooters have built-in location trackers. The bikes cost around $1 to unlock and 30 cents per minute to use. The e-bikes, manufactured in Portugal, were extremely expensive, Greenacre said. Uber does not yet know how far the bikes can travel on a single charge in this country, but on average can travel between 40 and 50 kilometres before the battery needs

Embattled banking heavyweight Westpac has been dealt another blow in the wake of the money laundering and child exploitation scandal. The 200-year-old lender dominated headlines last month after financial watchdog Austrac alleged it failed to investigate customers who made transactions possibly linked to child exploitation in the Philippines and South-East Asia. According to The Australian Financial Review, some payments may have gone towards “livestreamed child abuse”. The lender was also accused of breaching money laundering and counter-terrorism finance laws, with Westpac publicly accused of 23 million breaches. The crisis claimed the scalp of Westpac chief executive Brian Hartzer as well as chairman Lindsay Maxsted, who will now bring forward his retirement to the first half of next year. The scandal deepened further when comments allegedly made by chief executive Brian Hartzer to senior staff were leaked to The Australian, including claims the

ork was once considered a luxury meat, but today it’s definitely affordable. And it not only won’t break the food budget, it’s a meat that is incredibly versatile, coming in a variety of cuts. QUICK RECIPE

■■ Remove the meat from the fridge an hour or more before cooking so it comes up to room temperature. ■■ Place the lamb skin-side down. Look for the plumpest parts, and partially slice horizontally into them to create a flap. Lift the flap and flip it towards a gap you wish to fill, to create a more even rectangular shape.

■■ Cover the meat with plastic wrap and pound it with a rolling pin to flatten and firm into place. ■■ Trim off any hard or fat gristly bits. Or, if using a carvery or full leg, ask your butcher to remove the bone for you. ■■ Combine the stuffing ingredients. Place the stuffing in a strip down the middle of one side of the meat then lift the edge and roll the meat tightly as though rolling a Swiss roll, tucking in any stray pieces.

■■ Tie as pictured including longways. ■■ Preheat the oven to 200°C or 180°C fan bake. Heat the oil and butter in a roasting pan and brown the lamb well on all sides. Remove from the heat, place remaining rosemary sprigs into the pan and place the roast on top. ■■ Roast for 45 minutes. ■■ Poke a metal skewer or thin knife into the centre, count to three and then test it on the inside of your wrist. It should feel warm if it doesn’t, cook for another 15 minutes and try again. ■■ Place the lamb on a warm plate and cover with foil to rest for 15 minutes before removing the string and carving. ■■ Serve warm in thick slices with gravy, or cold in thin slices with cranberry jelly. Scotland upsets the Kiwis on court

■■FOOTBALL

Zaha on a goal spree Wilfried Zaha scored his third goal in five games to earn Crystal Palace a point from a 1-1 home draw with Brighton in an English Premier League game between teams in the middle of the standings yesterday. The Ivory Coast winger collected the ball on the left flank, cut inside, then back outside before driving a fierce left-footed shot high into the net in the 76th minute. Neal Maupay also kept up his impressive scoring form of late, netting for the third straight game to give Brighton the lead in the 54th. The striker pounced on a side-footed cross by Leandro Trossard from the right wing, also shooting high into the corner with his left foot from a central position in the area. Palace, which moved up one place to ninth, came into the game only late on after being dominated by Brighton in the first half. Brighton stayed in 13th place. Meanwhile Manchester City’s reward for winning its Champions League group was a guaranteed last 16 pairing with a team

that only finished runner-up. It got Real Madrid. The record 13-time champions will host the first leg on February 26 against the ambitious Premier League title holders, who are trying to win the European Cup for the first time. The match pits Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane against City manager Pep Guardiola. Zidane has won three Champions League titles in three attempts with Madrid, while Guardiola has been seeking his third title for almost a decade after winning twice with Barcelona. “The only way to be top in Europe is going forward and (playing in) semi-finals and finals and winning the Champions League,” City director of football Txiki Begiristain said at UEFA headquarters after yesterday’s draw. City’s best run in the Champions League was reaching the semi-finals in 2016, losing 1-0 over two legs to Madrid. That was soon after Zidane took over in Madrid, and just before Guardiola was hired to replace Manuel Pellegrini in Manchester.

Also, Liverpool was sent back to the Spanish stadium where it won the title last season. The first leg against Atletico Madrid will be at the Metropolitano Stadium on February 18. “I think that Liverpool know (the stadium) very well,” said Atletico director Clemente Villaverde, describing the unbeaten Premier League leaders as “at this moment the best team we have in Europe.” Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp said there were “pretty much four or five potential finals already in the last 16.” Spanish league leader Barcelona will face Napoli with the first leg in Italy, and Chelsea will face Bayern Munich in a rematch of the 2012 final. Chelsea won that title in Bayern’s home stadium, which will be hosting the second leg on March 18. In other Champions League matchups, Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel was paired with his former club, Borussia Dortmund, Lyon will take on Juventus, Tottenham will play Leipzig; and Atalanta will meet Valencia.

Lyon will face Juventus, a team led by Cristiano Ronaldo, without its own star forward. Memphis Depay left Sunday’s French league game with a season-ending knee injury. The Juventus games will be played on the same nights – February 26 and March 17 – as Madrid plays Man City. “The whole world will be watching, no doubt,” Madrid director Emilio Butragueno said. “We will experience football at its best and then all the fans will be lucky to enjoy this kind of game.” Two pairings feature teams playing in the knockout rounds of the Champions League for the first time. Leipzig will play the first leg at Tottenham and Atalanta will go up against Valencia. For the first time, all 16 teams left play in the five wealthiest European leagues. The first legs will be played between February 18 and 26, with the return games from March 1018. The final on May 30 will be at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.

The New Zealand squash team were beaten by Scotland at the world teams championships yesterday. The loss means the Kiwi side can still reach the quarter-finals but will now have to play a round of 16 contest rather than go directly through to the quarters as initially expected if they had topped their group. Scotland were always going to be a difficult prospect with two very experienced players in their top two singles and the solid Rory Stewart at No. 3. The first match had Wellington’s Evan Williams beaten by Stewart who has a similar world ranking. The match had the Kiwi start slowly losing the first game 5-11, but then working his way back winning the second game 12-10, but dropping the third 10-12 before dropping the fourth 1-11. Next on court was a battle of the two 33-year-olds as Campbell Grayson faced Alan Clyne. The match provided plenty of drama as the Kiwi lost the first two games but forced his way back into the match, including winning the fourth set after saving a match point. Eventually it was Clyne who came away the winner in 84 minutes 8-11, 4-11, 11-7, 12-10, 4-11, the win giving the Scots the tie. The third match was played as every point is vital in case of countbacks and Paul Coll quickly took control, beating Greg Lobban 11-5, 11-4, 11-6 in 29 mins, but overall it was a 2-1 win for Scotland. Although disappointed with the result, New Zealand coach and former player, Glen Wilson believed the team can come back strong from the loss. “We were one down in the first in a close match at No. 3 and Campbell lost in five it was a long match, but full credit to Alan Clyne he played a slightly better fifth set to take the match. “The boys are playing well, but were slightly outplayed by Scotland today,” said Wilson. “It means we have to go into a last 16 round and an extra game to make the top eight. “We’ve put ourselves in a slightly tricky situation, but we’re not out of it and I’m sure the boys will fire up. “It’s quite an open event, there’s nine, 10, 11 teams quite a few teams who can do well …. we saw Germany beaten by Spain that’s another upset in pool play. “They know they’ve got an extra life. “It’s a little bit of a wake-up call for the boys.” The next match for the New Zealanders is this morning with Lwamba Chileshe set too make his debut for the team.

Folau announces netball retirement

Christmas tourney a winner The Methven Bowling Green was packed to the rafters on Saturday with a full green of players stepping out into the sunshine for competition for the Stuart Gordon Christmas tournament under the mountains. All counted, 64 players making up 16 teams of four took part in the tournament for a festive day on the greens, while still maintaining a little of that well-known Christmas spirit. The tournament drew players from all around Canterbury and some of the big names of the sport locally too. At the end of the day’s play it was the foursome of Bob Holdom, Bruce White, Sandra Holdom and Noeline Woods who emerged on top of the pack ahead of locals, Brent Mayson, Bruce Harper, Bruce Redmond and Millie Fargo. Sandra Keith’s side consisting of herself, Craig Carter, Richard Kane and Craig Harrison were next on the score sheet in third place while the Canterbury Bowling Club side skipped by Tom Tamiti finished in fourth. Silver Ferns great Maria Folau has called time on her illustrious netball career. The Silver Fern icon has retired from all netball, playing her final test series during October’s Constellation Cup. She signs off on an incredible career with 150 test caps, a Netball World Cup gold medal, two Commonwealth Games gold medals, a Netball World Youth Cup gold medal and a large following who have admired Folau’s trademark long-range shooting for well over a decade. Silver Ferns head coach Noeline Taurua said Folau will go down in history as one of New Zealand’s netball greats of the game. “She’s definitely one of the legends of our game not only in New Zealand but international wise,” Taurua said. “Very sad to see her go but really happy that she was able to end on a positive note with a Netball World Cup win.” Taurua said Folau’s incomparable skills in the shooting circle is what the Ferns will miss the most. “She definitely set the tone and never wavered irrelevant of the pressure she’s under, that’s her trademark,” Taurua said. “She’s a master in regards to the shooting ... her ability to turn anywhere in the circle and shoot. There’s never a sweat on her brow, she looks absolutely beautiful.” Folau made her debut in the black dress as Maria Tutaia, an 18-year-old, in 2005 against the Sunshine Girls in Jamaica. It was the same year she, along with two of New Zealand’s other great ‘fossils’ including Casey Kopua and Laura Langman, won the Netball World Youth Cup with the New Zealand U21 team. Twelve months later and Folau had become a regular starter for the Silver Ferns and has been a mainstay for the national side ever since. Folau also competed at four Netball World Cups including in Sydney in 2015 when she became just the fourth Silver Fern to earn 100 test caps. This year she played a major role in helping the Silver Ferns to golden glory in Liverpool in what was her Netball World Cup swansong. Domestically Folau spent much of her career in the blue strip of the Northern Mystics. Meanwhile, Taurua has made three changes to her side ahead of next month’s Vitality Netball Nations Cup in England. The world champions depart for the tournament without experienced duo in Langman and Katrina Rore, who will take a sabbatical break from the upcoming Nations Cup after coming off a heavy workload this season. Joining the side are shooter Maia Wilson and midcourters Whitney Souness and Kimiora Poi.

Bodyline war about to explode

Demolition jobs galore By Matt Markham

It was domination day at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre for the final day of Open Grade Interclub tennis action on the weekend, with big wins the order of the day. Two of the three matches played in the premier competition resulted in one side winning all nine contests on offer, while the third was a slightly closer affair. Playing in the second week of round two of the competition and the final weekend before a break over the holiday period for a few weeks, first week winners, Fairton continued their hot form with an untouched victory over Allenton.

Diego Quispe Kim and Connor Brosnahan were in hot form, winning their doubles match 6-1, 6-0, before Kim defeated Jason Feutz 6-0, 6-1 in their singles fixture while Brosnahan proved too good for Jake Parsons in the other, winning 6-1, 6-1. The only match in the tie that went past straight sets was the doubles match between Fairton’s John Leslie and Angel Spooner who fought hard to beat Murphy Dargue and Holly Feutz 7-6, 6-3, 1-0. While Fairton were dominant, so too were Methven, untroubled by their rivals Dorie in a clash which saw many of the big names of the game locally going head-to-head. A gripping doubles match be-

tween top seeds, Cameron McCracken and Tyler Leonard and Rhys and Jayden Cromie set the tone for the day with the latter pairing eventually proving no match for their rivals, losing 3-6, 6-4, 10-6. The singles matches were a one-sided affair with Rhys Cromie missing from the action, leaving Methven with a win before they even stepped onto the court due to the default. McCracken continued his hot form winning 6-2, 604 against Jayden Cromie while Leonard, Aidan Watt, Ryan Watt and Neil Alombro also recorded wins. The third match of Saturday’s play saw Hampstead and round one winners, Southern, do battle and it was Southern who

emerged on top. After winning two of their three doubles matches, Southern would have felt in control of the tie and then they picked up four singles matches courtesy of Sam Bubb, Ollie Bubb, Erin Connelly-Whyte and Amelia McKeown. Peter Kirwan was the pick of the Hampstead players, winning his doubles match alongside Pete Leonard over Sam Bubb and Gareth Evans before taking down Evans in their singles match 6-2, 6-3. Meanwhile, yesterday’s Secondary Schools’ Singles competitions which were set to be played at the tennis centre were called off due to the inclement weather.

Could the cricket series between Australia and New Zealand turn nasty in Melbourne? Cricket greats want the Bodyline war to go into overdrive, urging Australia to pick their scariest “enforcer”. Legendary leg spinner Shane Warne and former England captain Michael Vaughan want fast bowler James Pattinson selected for the Boxing Day test over the veteran Peter Siddle. The Telegraph wrote: “Australian captain Tim Paine has vowed to be more ruthless as calls grow for selectors to unleash the beast and make James Pattinson their Bodyline enforcer. Pattinson was also described as an “attack dog”. New Zealand’s medium fast bowler Neil Wagner lit the first test fuse, after leaving Aussie batsman Matthew Wade “battered and bruised” as the Telegraph put it. Memories of the infamous Bodyline series between Australia and England 87 years ago are being revived, with claims that New Zealand’s short-pitched bowling has unnerved the great Aussie batsman Steve Smith who fell to Wagner bouncers. “Pretty simple for me – get Pattinson in, unleash him,” Warne told News Corp. “He’s aggressive and I want him to come in and I want him to bowl fast and be aggressive and smash it into the wicket.” Vaughan said bodyline comparisons made by Australian captain Paine was a declaration of war. “That’s why James Pattinson has to play. Pattinson comes in for (the injured) Josh Hazlewood,” Vaughan said on Fox Cricket’s 360. “I don’t think it’s even a discussion. Pattinson bowls at 145km/h with Cummins and then Starc and a bit of Nathan Lyon. I wouldn’t change anything.” Vaughan said most of the New Zealanders looked “a bit like rabbits in the headlights” after the humiliating first test defeat in Perth. “This is one test match win for New Zealand in 29 … whether it’s one day cricket or test cricket I really think the Australians have the wool over the New Zealanders eyes,” he said.

Jamieson heading to Australia to join struggling Black Caps Kyle Jamieson is still coming to grips with his call-up to the Black Caps squad for the two remaining cricket tests in Australia. The two-metre tall Auckland pace bowler has received his maiden New Zealand call-up as the replacement for injured speedster Lockie Ferguson. The latter is returning home from Australia after suffering a right calf strain while bowling in

the Black Caps’ first test loss in Perth, and is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks. Jamieson will fly to Melbourne today, after turning out for Auckland in a T20 against Canterbury on Tuesday, and the 24-year-old said he’s excited to join the New Zealand squad for the first time. “I’m pretty speechless at the moment. “I had a phone call from (se-

lector) Gavin Larsen just as I was padding up at training, so that was kind of unexpected. “I obviously received the news and had to kind of park it for a couple hours while we ticked off prep for today’s game but yeah, it’s a pretty special moment.” Jamieson will join the test squad in preparation for the second test at the MCG, starting on Boxing Day.

Black Caps coach Gary Stead, also the lofty quick’s former coach at Canterbury, said it was an exciting opportunity. “Kyle has impressed in the Plunket Shield domestic four-day competition. “We’ve also been really encouraged by his progress in the NZC winter camps and his performances for New Zealand A. “Standing at over two metres

tall he obviously gets good bounce and brings something different to our other pace bowlers. “It will be his first time in camp and we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the environment.” Jamieson boasts 72 wickets in the Plunket Shield at an average of 27.9 and was a member of the New Zealand squad for the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Warriors take $2.8m punt A 19-year-old, who has played just 113 minutes of NRL across five games, is set to leave the Melbourne Storm to sign with the New Zealand Warriors. On the day it appeared the Storm were beginning to say goodbye to Josh Addo-Carr, there may be another body about to head out the door. This time it’s a very big body, in the shape of Tino Fa’asuamaleaui. And it’s not just his 107kg, 197cm frame which looms large. According to Stuff, Fa’asuamaleaui will sign a deal in the region of $700,000 per year across four seasons. The report claims that the deal is done, although, it is not clear whether the huge teenager will sign immediately – or when his contract runs out at the end of 2020. Warriors recruitment boss Peter O’Sullivan, who coincidentally signed Israel Folau, Greg Inglis to the Storm and also took Latrell Mitchell to the Roosters,

is a known admirer of Fa’asuamaleaui. The Orange-born forward played for Samoa earlier this year, and has also represented the Junior Kangaroos. O’Sullivan told NZME that the Warriors’ main priority on the recruitment front was securing a hooker – which they did by bringing in Wayde Egan – along with some big forwards. “We are still not small, we are just not as big as some packs,” O’Sullivan said. “I could have signed three or four players in the last few months. “They would have helped our squad a little bit, but because we have only got one spot left in our 30, I didn’t want to do that unless we were getting a player that helps our squad a lot. “Priority wise the hooker was number one, the big edge back rower number two and probably a centre back rower would have been the third option which I really wanted to do. “Next priority would be a big middle.”

Howley cops 18 month ban for betting Former Wales assistant coach Rob Howley has been suspended from all involvement in rugby for 18 months after admitting to breaching World Rugby anti-corruption and betting regulations. The Welsh Rugby union yesterday released the findings of a three-month investigation into Howley’s betting activity that

forced him to leave the recent World Cup in Japan before the tournament had started. During a five-year period as Wales assistant coach – from November 13, 2015, to September 7, 2019 – Howley has been found to have placed 363 prohibited bets on rugby union, featuring 1163 matches in total.

Under World Rugby’s regulation six players, agents, match officials, disciplinary personnel, coaching, backroom staff, owners and directors are not allowed to bet on any rugby match. The report found a “comparatively small percentage” of Howley’s bets were placed on matches involving Wales, and on two

A R

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’ve an appreciation for history. Thinking backward helps you think forward. There will come a day when people don’t have to deal with the things you’re dealing with now. You’ll look back in amazement. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Don’t struggle with choices. There is nothing for you in vacillation or fickleness. Think of yourself as one who researches and observes until your choice is clear. You’re not indecisive, just thorough. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Just because you know the same word definitions doesn’t mean you speak the same language. Double-check; stay aware of the other person. Then you can avoid trouble caused by miscommunication. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): One person is embarrassed or offended by something that is no big deal to the next person. To fulfil today’s purposes, toe a straight line down the acceptable and middle lane of appropriateness. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Machines break. People aren’t like that. You can’t assume a living thing is broken because you don’t know what it was built to do. Living things transform instead of break. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): There doesn’t have to be agreement, similarity or a confluence of interests for things to work between people. As long as there is respect and a connection, coexistence is possible. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Small works can’t be tended to in broad strokes. Too much would get missed. Large works require a mix of broad strokes and attention to detail. So whether working large or small, the small things matter. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You have a way of loving another person purely for your own expression and joy. Then you have a different way of showing your love that matches how the other person would prefer to receive it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Attraction is the trigger that inspires you to flex your muscles of imagination. Wanting makes you resourceful. Needing makes you determined. Speculating makes you smart. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): In days of old, one had to go door to door to make connections. Now the doors are email addresses and the knock is a good subject line. Such things are worth spending time on to get right. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Longing is, to many, an uncomfortable version of love. Then there are those who prefer it, though they may not realise or admit this is so. Being at a distance allows for much fantasy and idealism. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): People can walk your path with you, but they can’t walk it for you. They can do a lot of other things for you, and you should totally make sure that they do today, as success will depend on deft delegation.

Haxby Hefford was in good form at the Otago Rowing Championships over the weekend before wind interupted the regatta.

PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

Rowers show their mettle Weather may have interrupted the latter stages of the Otago Rowing Championships, but the large Ashburton contingent of rowers who made their way down to Lake Ruataniwha on the weekend still walked away with some solid results. High winds limited racing action on Saturday and many finals were cancelled due to the condi-

tions, while others were reduced in distance, but rowers still stood up and asked to be noticed, putting them in good stead for a busy summer once the calendar rolls over to 2020. A number of Ashburton rowers picked up victories in either their heats or finals at the regatta and two A Final successes highlighted the weekend.

The women’s masters double sculls, held over 1000 metres went the way of Rose Kellet and Helen Hodge, while Kellet was also part of the women’s masters coxed/ coxless quad sculls team alongside Kim Hamill, Gendie Woods and Teresa Eden who were also successful in their A Final. Hodge also finished second in the A Final of the women’s mas-

ters single sculls. Accomplished singles sculler Haxby Hefford was in line for a good result in the men’s club single sculls, having won his heat to advance further before the final was cancelled and it was the same for Ged Wall who also picked up a victory in his heat of the Boys’ Under 17 single sculls. The men’s novice coxed four of

Matthew Pearce, Parker Bradford, Riley Harris, Zane Cameron and Harriet Leverton were also on the winners list, winning their heat before finishing third in the A Final. January will be a busy time for local rowers with a number of different regattas set to take place over the course of the month around the South Island.
