suggestions the church should be demolished. The weight of community opinion, however, saved the day and that left church members faced with a massive fundraising challenge, one they have now won. On July 1, parish minister Heather Kennedy said, the final documents will be signed with work planned to start in August. And the day the scaffolding goes up around the building will be a red letter one, sending a clear signal to the community that the church would again become a community asset. “It’s an exciting time for everyone

It’s been a 10-year journey, but finally work on the restoration and strengthening of Ashburton’s historic Baring Square Church is just a few short weeks away from beginning. The $3 million project has been a controversial one, with wide-ranging opinions on the future of the building which suffered significant damage in the September 2010 earthquake. With only a small Methodist congregation to drive and raise funds for the restoration project, there were

and our objective is to get the doors open again and to begin a whole new life for the church building,” she said. The project is funded through a mix of insurance payout, church funds, building sales and a deal struck with the Ashburton District Council on two pieces of church land. The council needed this land for its new civic centre and library that will be built in Baring Square east on the site of the old county council building.

Cycling fundraiser a success A 24-hour cycling fundraiser has generated more than $2500 for the local Salvation Army with the opportunity to donate still open. Members of the Ashburton College student executive wanted to do a fundraiser post-lockdown to support a local organisation that had supported the community during the lockdown. They opted to take on a 24hour cycling challenge using spin bikes, spending half of the time at Countdown north in a hope to attract public attention. “It went really, really well, it exceeded our expectations,” head girl Poppy Kilworth said. “The public were really supportive and lots of people stopped by to see what we were doing.” A Givealittle page was set up for the event, which will remain open till Friday, and collection containers were set up at Countdown during the event. They also had a collection area for food donations, with people also showing their support that way by donating more than six banana boxes worth of items. Fifteen students took part in the challenge, with a number of teachers and the public getting in on the fun.

Neil Brown is questioning whether dumping elected district health board members is the right way forward, while Andrew Falloon says the move will gut democratic and local oversight of health services. The Ashburton mayor and Rangitata MP were responding to what the Government is calling a “once-in-a-generation opportunity to back our worldclass doctors, nurses and other health staff and deliver a truly national health and disability system”. Health Minister David Clark this week released the final

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon rode along with the students for the final hour, notching up a respectable 35.5km. In total, the students covered more than 550km. Starting at 8pm at Kilworth’s house, they livestreamed the

first four hours of the challenge on Instagram before providing regular updates through the early hours of Saturday morning. “It was us four head students and two exec members that did the 1am to 7am stint,” Kilworth said. “I think I only got about 20 minutes sleep in the 24 hours.” Cold temperatures meant a stint to warm up on the bike was

an inviting proposition, with temperatures early on Saturday morning at around -3°C. “We just really want to thank everyone for their support, we want to thank the EA Networks Centre for donating the bikes, and everyone that stopped by and donated, and Countdown for letting us use their space,” deputy head boy Kyle Cabangun said.

report of the Health and Disability System Review which makes recommendations, including reducing the number of district health boards from the current 20 down to possibly eight to 12 within five years, and moving to fully appointed boards. “For Ashburton we would lose democracy because there would be no elected members like there is now, it would just be appointed members,” Brown said. Additionally the Canterbury District Health Board area would become part of a larger health board area. “How would they be accountable to a community, so we are getting the services we are en-

titled to? We would need some assurances,” Brown said. Falloon said the Government’s review clearly stated that elected members provided an important voice for local priorities and issues. “So it makes no sense that the Minister would welcome a recommendation to disestablish elected members,” Falloon said. “After two years of work the Government’s health sector review has come back recommending a gutting of democratic and local oversight of health services in regional New Zealand,” he said. Clark said the report confirmed health services and their

work forces were under considerable stress, while the system itself was complex and fragmented. “One of the key lessons of Covid-19 was the importance of a strong public health service. That is what this review has been all about,” he said. The review’s recommendations also include creating a new Crown entity, provisionally called Health NZ, to focus on operational delivery of health services, as well as greater integration between primary and community care and hospital services, and creating a Maori health authority to advise on all aspects of a Maori health policy.

When Ashburton’s Methodists gather on Sunday, for some it will be the first time they have seen their fellow parishioners for 12 weeks. The Covid-19 lockdown meant church services were off the agenda for congregations across New Zealand, and while other churches have opened their doors again, the district’s Methodists are likely to be the last in the district to do so. But it’s time for face-to-face services to resume, says minister Heather Kennedy. For her parishioners, a return to Sunday services will still not be a return to normal, however. Their home, the Baring Square church, has been closed for the past 10 years because of earthquake damages and regular Sunday worship is held in the Paterson’s Funeral Services chapel. Over the past 12 weeks Sunday worship has been delivered in a variety of ways, Kennedy said. “I’ve emailed out the whole Sunday service, with hymns and we read through them. Everyone seemed quite happy with that.” For parishioners without an internet connection Sunday services were delivered to letter boxes or posted. The important thing, Kennedy said, was that the church community kept in touch with one another. “But they’ll certainly be really happy to get back together on Sunday.”

Ag training course swamped by newly unemployed By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

There’s a looming job crisis in the primary sector as New Zealand’s borders remain closed to its traditional immigrant seasonal labour source, but the growing number of Kiwis losing jobs through the Covid-19 pandemic could see white collar workers filling those job vacancies. More than 300 people ranging in age from mid 20s to late 50s, most of whom have recently lost jobs, have applied for positions on employment consultant Matt Jones’ next training course. He launched Agri Training last year with the goal of providing a career path for people wanting to work in the primary sector and, at the same time, providing employers with staff who were well trained and work ready. The next course starts on Monday and Jones said he’s stunned by the backgrounds many applicants have. “These are people we’d not normally get – chefs, pastors, people from tourism, they’ve all lost jobs. My staff are buzzing about the quality of people on this course,” he said. While there was an immediate need in the dairy sector with calving due to start shortly, Jones said there were vacancies across the board in the primary sector. And looking ahead to harvest, closed borders meant the traditional influx of workers

from the United Kingdom and Ireland would not happen. “Normally, at this time of the year, I’d have at least 40 people coming in off planes. Now there are no planes,” he said. He’s narrowed the number of applicants down from 300 plus to 74 and they’ll start their 20 hour online introductory course on Monday. If they like what they see, they’ll move on to a 13-day residential module

that involves on-farm training. Traditionally the transition from online learning to the practical module sees quite a few pull up short, Jones said, but those registered in the next course were clearly motivated job seekers and he anticipates they’ll complete both modules. For Jones, the biggest hurdle currently is funding. “The government’s come out with money and ideas and

we’ve applied for more funding but we’ve heard nothing,” he said. In an effort to fill the yawning employment gaps Jones said his company is funding the online training module, and if necessary, he said he’d bite the bullet and put up money for the practical element too. “At the end of the day, we just want to see these people in jobs.”

New era for historic church From P1 As part of that project it bought two sections from the church, one that housed the now demolished Methodist Church Hall. Before work starts on the restoration and strengthening of the building church members will be stripping out the interior and putting its collection of solid oak pews up for sale. In keeping with a modern church, with an interior that can serve as both a place of worship and a performance venue, the pews will be replaced with chairs, Kennedy said. It will basically be a project that grows from the ground up with the sloping wooden floors replaced by a level surface. Over the years the church had been closed water had seeped into the building and parts of that floor had now rotted, she said. The exterior of the church will be strengthened and meeting and service rooms will be added on the eastern and southern sides. “It’s been 10 years for the parish since it was closed after the first earthquakes in September 2010 but we’re hoping we’ll be open again within a year. It’s been a long journey with a lot of ups and downs,” Kennedy said. The Baring Square Church is recognised for its good acoustic qualities and, once restored, it will be available as a concert venue and for other community events as well as serving its primary role as a place of worship for the district’s Methodists.

New timeframe for domain and speed plans The shape of the Ashburton Domain of tomorrow is in the community’s hands. A draft development plan for the domain went out for public comment earlier this year, but the arrival of Covid-19 meant the cut-off date for submissions

had to be extended. These will now close on July 5. To date 113 submissions have been received by the council on the plan. It essentially reshapes parts of the domain to create a gathering point at the West Street edge. This will include a

cafe and the plan also sees the relocation of the Ashburton Bowling Club’s greens to either the Elizabeth Street picnic area or to greenfields at the EA Networks Centre. The plan includes developments that will take place over

Preparing for Volunteer Week By Heather Mackenzie

heather.m@theguardian.co.nz

Volunteer week is about to get under way again next week. Starting on Sunday the weeklong event is a chance to acknowledge and celebrate the 159 million hours, roughly $4 billion worth, of volunteer time New Zealanders carry out each year. To help Mid Canterbury celebrate our volunteers Dellwyn Moylan, Mid Canterbury co-ordinator for Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury chose the Hearts Around Our Community project. Volunteers are the heart of our community, she said. Run along the lines of lockdown’s, teddy bears in the window and home-made poppies celebrating Anzac Day, her organisation is urging locals and businesses to show their support for all the wonderful volunteers we have in the Ashburton District. “It could be a heart, a message or draw a thank you on the footpath outside your house, whatever suits really.” “We would love to see the district awash with hearts and mes-

This is a bite-sized way of making a big difference. Typically, there is no training or application process, tasks tend to take less than 30 minutes to complete and there is no ongoing commitment required. Moylan said the New Zealand Red Cross run Letters of Kindness project is a great example of micro-volunteering. “Something as simple as writing a cheerful letter, which can be done from home or on the school bus, can brighten a lonely person’s day immeasurably. “Join us this National Volunteer Week to celebrate how our communities are stronger when working together.” Volunteers help shape the world we want to live in, now and into the future, she said. The club will still be accepting donations of all things craft related, call Joan Lawn 308 7568 or Helen Hooper 308 6088 for details.

Perhaps a bit of literary rivalry going on here? “Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I’ll waste no time reading it,” Moses Hadas, an American teacher, a classical scholar, and a translator of numerous works. It would be interesting to know the author he was responding to and the book he was referring to. And something else from him, “Why do you sit there looking like an envelope without any address on it?” “He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends.” Oscar Wilde Irish poet and playwright, so perhaps not surprising he came up with this. He also came up with this quote, “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.” “I feel so miserable without you; it’s almost like having you here.” Stephen Bishop, an American singer-songwriter, actor, and guitarist. His biggest hits include On and On and It Might Be You. Wonder who he was thinking of

and if whoever it was ever visited him again. And let’s finish with this, maybe, polite suggestion: “In order to avoid being called a flirt, she always yielded easily.” Charles, Count Talleyrand. An interesting fellow whose career spanned the regimes of Louis XVI, the years of the French Revolution, Napoleon, Louis XVIII, and Louis-Philippe. Those Talleyrand served often distrusted him, but others, like Napoleon, found him extremely useful. The name Talleyrand has become a byword for crafty, cynical diplomacy. The lady involved? Unusual comments I know but, hey Roger, thanks for the insults.

Dan’s music’s changing lives By Heather Mackenzie

Left – Dan Hitchens.

heather.m@theguardian.co.nz

Plato once said that music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything and, while former Ashburton muso Daniel Hitchens may be no Plato, his musical talent and natural teaching ability definitely changes lives. One area that Hitchens has a dramatic influence in is in his work with youth at Te Poutama Arahi Rangitahi. Te Poutama Arahi Rangitahi is a specialist, secure residential treatment programme near Christchurch, housing the most high-risk youth in New Zealand, aged between 12-to 18-years-old. The residents have engaged in harmful behaviour that have left them unable to live safely in the community. Classroom teacher Gabby Tuaine, and residence manager Lincoln Ellery, both agreed the youth in this programme are all severely at risk and have a range of anti-social behaviours with mild to moderate learning delays. Tuaine and Ellery cannot speak highly enough of Hitchens and the positive influence he has had on students since starting there in 2016. “There is ongoing interest in interventions, such as participatory music programmes, that seek to foster social reintegration, support mental wellbeing and equip young offenders with life skills, competencies and emotional resilience,” they said. “Dan has the ability to connect and engage all youth into an inclusive individualised music programme. “Students feel at ease in Dan’s presence as he manages to engage our young akonga (pupils) after years of disengagement from mainstream education.” For Hitchens, teaching at Te Poutama Arahi Rangitahi is the highlight of his day. With his long dreads and tattoos he fits right in, “I look like one of them”, he said. Over the last four years at the facility, Hitchens has unearthed some very talented musicians. The end of year concert where Dan performs and his students get to showcase their abilities is often the highlight of the calendar year. “For the Maori and Pasifika residents, music is part of their heritage, so they know a bit about it already and it’s in their blood.” It’s a great feeling to know that his students are now jamming together at break times, rather than staring each other down over the lunch table, he said. Right from a young age music has always been a huge part in Hitchens’ life. He was six when he first picked up a guitar, seven when he first stepped on stage in his local church and was still attending Ashburton College when he led his first band. Graduating high school gave him the freedom to follow more of his musical interests. To begin with, as well as playing professionally, he decided

to give teaching a go and soon gathered up an impressive list of students from all around Canterbury. His growing interest in the technical aspects of jazz saw him move to Christchurch in 2011 to attend the CPIT Jazz School. In order to make ends meet while studying, Hitchens continued teaching and also played in a covers band, Sammy Jay and the Cucumbers. “We were four people each with small town backgrounds, who met at jazz school and formed a band. The name didn’t have any special meaning, we just liked the sound of it.” Sammy Jay and the Cucumbers’ talents soon become widely known and bookings rolled in. Hitchens, the band’s lead guitarist, avoided the microphone, declaring himself as not much of a singer, he said. Hitchens established himself in the late night music scene in Canterbury and New Zealand, but that wasn’t the only area where his name was gathering momentum. In 2017 he started teaching in primary schools in Christchurch and Canterbury. Within six months he had a waiting list of five-to-eleven-

year-olds wanting to learn guitar, ukulele or basic piano. It’s not hard to work out how the waiting list happened, he’s a great teacher and mentor. His music school also focuses on giving students somewhere public to show off their skills and they love it. “So often they work really hard learning an instrument, but then nothing. They are not given the opportunity to perform in public other than in front of family or at the odd school assembly.” Hitchens soon changed that, he takes his students busking with him or organises special concerts. Performing live is good for confidence and that self-confidence spreads into everyday life, he said. “To begin with they are too scared to perform in public, but once they have a couple of songs under their belt the nerves fall away.” In 2019 Hitchens could see his teaching idea was working out, so he decided to step it up a notch and open an official music school, Monster Music. Talented musicians are often referred to as ‘Monsters’, plus kids love monsters and think the name is really cool, he said. Monster Music’s philosophy of

teaching music in a modern and fun way has worked out well, as he now has three tutors working with him, teaches at seven schools and has over 200 primary-aged children on the books. “I love teaching and seeing the kids grow musically, and personally, as well. “Music is really good for every-

body,” he said. Even though he is still teaching and working up to 60 hours a week with his music school, Hitchens still finds the time to perform live and is currently with the covers band Wishlist, alongside fellow Ashburton mates, Simon and Nikita Christensen and Ben Crosson.

Drug shows Covid promise A cheap and widely available drug can help save the lives of patients seriously ill with coronavirus. The low-dose steroid treatment dexamethasone is a major breakthrough in the fight against the deadly virus, UK experts say. The drug is part of the world’s biggest trial testing existing treatments to see if they also work for coronavirus. It cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators. For those on oxygen, it cut deaths by a fifth. Had the drug had been used to treat patients in the UK from the start of the pandemic, up to 5000 lives could have been saved, researchers say. And it could be of huge benefit in poorer countries with high numbers of Covid-19 patients. The UK government has 200,000 courses of the drug in its stockpile and says the NHS will make dexamethasone available to patients. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said there was a genuine case to celebrate “a remarkable British scientific achievement”. “We have taken steps to ensure we have enough supplies, even in the event of a second peak.” Chief Medical Officer for England Prof Chris Whitty said it would save lives around the world. About 19 out of 20 patients with coronavirus recover without being admitted to hospital. Of those who are admitted, most also recover but some may need oxygen or mechanical ventilation.

Good riddance to film While some have criticised HBO Max’s removal of Gone With the Wind from its streaming service – including those who wonder if it hurts the legacy of Hattie McDaniel, the first African American woman to win an Academy Award – Oscar nominee Queen Latifah says good riddance. “Let Gone with the Wind be gone with the wind,” she said. Latifah says the story behind McDaniel’s Oscar win is not as shiny as the golden trophy. “They didn’t even let her in the theatre until right before she got that award. Someone came outside and brought her into the auditorium.” Dexamethasone does not appear to help people with milder symptoms who do not need help with their breathing. And these are the high-risk patients dexamethasone appears to help. The drug is already used to reduce inflammation in a range of other conditions, including arthritis, asthma and some skin conditions. And it appears to help stop some of the damage that can happen when the body’s immune system goes into overdrive as it tries to fight off coronavirus. This over-reaction, a cytokine storm, can be deadly. In the trial, led by a team from Oxford University, about 2000 hospital patients were given dexamethasone and compared with more than 4000 who were not. For patients on ventilators,

it cut the risk of death from 40 percent to 28 per cent. For patients needing oxygen, it cut the risk of death from 25 per cent to 20 per cent. Chief investigator Prof Peter Horby said: “This is the only drug so far that has been shown to reduce mortality – and it reduces it significantly. It’s a major breakthrough.” Lead researcher Prof Martin Landray said the findings suggested one life could be saved for: ■■ every eight patients on a ventilator ■■ every 20-25 treated with oxygen “There is a clear, clear benefit,” he said. “The treatment is up to 10 days of dexamethasone and it

costs about £5 per patient. “So essentially it costs £35 (approx $NZ68) to save a life. “This is a drug that is globally available.” When appropriate, hospital patients should now be given it without delay, Prof Landray said. But people should not go out and buy it to take at home. Dexamethasone does not appear to help people with milder symptoms of coronavirus who do not need help with their breathing. The Recovery Trial, running since March, also looked at the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, which has subsequently been ditched amid concerns it increases fatalities and heart problems.

Twenty Indian troops killed in border clash At least 20 Indian soldiers have been killed in a clash with Chinese forces in a disputed Himalayan border area, Indian officials say. The incident follows rising tensions, and is the first deadly clash in the border area in at least 45 years. The Indian army initially said three of its soldiers had been killed, adding that both sides suffered casualties, however, later officials said a number of critically injured soldiers had died of their wounds. India’s external affairs ministry accused China of breaking an agreement struck the previous week to respect the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Galwan Valley. The BBC’s diplomatic correspondent, James Robbins, said violence between two armies high up in the Himalayas is very serious, and pressure will grow on the two nuclear powers not to allow a slide into

Violence has erupted on the China-India border with India reporting 20 of its soldiers have been killed. full-scale conflict. China did not confirm any casualties, but accused India in turn of crossing the border onto the Chinese side. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said India had crossed the border, “provoking and attacking Chi-

nese personnel, resulting in serious physical confrontation between border forces on the two sides”, AFP news agency reported. Both sides insist no bullet has been fired in four decades, and the Indian army said that “no shots were fired” in this

latest skirmish. How a clash that did not involve an exchange of fire could prove so lethal is unclear. There are reports that it was fought with rocks and clubs. Local media outlets reported that the Indian soldiers had been “beaten to death”. The LAC is poorly demarcated. The presence of rivers, lakes and snowcaps means the line can shift. The soldiers on each side – representing two of the world’s largest armies – come face-to-face at many points. But there have been tense confrontations along the border in recent weeks. India has accused China of sending thousands of troops into Ladakh’s Galwan valley and says China occupies 38,000sq km of its territory. Several rounds of talks in the last three decades have failed to resolve the boundary disputes.

Zoom date with Reeves The Matrix actor Keanu Reeves is hopping on Zoom for charity. According to Fox News, Reeves, 55, is auctioning off a 15-minute Zoom Date for US children’s cancer charity Camp Rainbow Gold in Idaho. The bidding has already hit $US16,400 and the auction won’t close until June 22, writes Entertainment Weekly. The site states that the value of the call is $US10,000. Bidding, which closes Monday, has already far surpassed that number. According to the site, the Zoom call must take place during the week of July 6, 2020 based on “mutually available dates and times”.

Jowsey dumps fiancee Kiwi reality TV star Harry Jowsey has reportedly dumped his fiancee Francesca Farago. Jowsey and Farago met on Netflix’s reality TV series, Too Hot To Handle, and he recently proposed with a lolly ring during the show’s reunion filmed over Zoom. On Tuesday Farago took to Youtube to share a 5-minute video titled Our Break Up, detailing the split. “He decided to break up with me because he couldn’t do long distance anymore,” she said through tears. Farago admitted she was “heartbroken” about the split - adding she tried to make it work but in the end “just couldn’t”.

Parliament playground cost beggars belief

I

t’s been a long time since I last played on a playground. But I do have so many fond childhood memories of days wiled away at the park, kicking back with my mates and generally just enjoying life. They were good times, but I certainly don’t remember what we played on being of any huge extravagance. Notwithstanding that, we were none the worse off for what was presented to us. So, with that in mind, to hear the bill for the new-look parliament playground this week was a bit of a shock. Close to $600,000 all-up to build a slide, which we’ll get to in a moment, some swings and a few other play things. That slide alone clocking in at nearly quarter of a million dollars. For that money, you’d expect that once you get to the bottom, it turns itself into an escalator and takes you right back up to the top to go again. It really is mind boggling spending. And on something so insignificant in the great scheme of things. To kids, a slide and a set of swings will be of as much enjoyment if they cost $100 as if they cost more than half a million dollars. So, where did things go so horribly wrong? I wouldn’t expect that you could rock up to parliament on any given day and find Jacinda pushing Winston on the swings, Nikki Kaye and Todd Muller on the see-saw and David Seymour sitting on one of those items that is a spring on which you will fall flat on your face if you lean too far forward. It’s designed for kids. The ones this country is trying to lift out of the poverty line, or so we’re told. Perhaps that nearly $600,000 would have been better being spent on something a little more useful to the majority, than the few who might actually end up getting the opportunity to enjoy such a lavish entertainment product on the steps of parliament.

Thank you for your support W

hen I first became a Member of Parliament after the 2017 General Election, 2020 seemed a long way off. I jumped into a world of policy, procedures and parliamentarians, knowing that I had three years to make my mark and to advocate for this region. There are many moments to be proud of as a member of Government led by Jacinda Ardern. Mid Canterbury schools will receive $3 million for infrastructure works to build and maintain quality learning environments for our children. The Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa received funding from the Provincial Growth Fund and is set to open next year. And, of course, Ashburton College had a visit from Jacinda Ardern to announce more than $50 million for new classrooms, and other renovations. ECE teachers and teacher aides will have their pay increased after years of underfunding. We introduced the Winter Energy Payment, the BestStart payment for parents with babies, boosted the incomes of 384,000

families with the Families Package. We’ve built 5000 public houses. This short list of achievements is something to be proud of. I’m particularly proud of our response to the 1-in-100 year global pandemic that is Covid-19. Just this past weekend, rugby resumed all across New Zealand. Southern took on the Harlequins in Timaru; the Highlanders took on the Chiefs at Forsyth Barr – life is beginning to return to as normal as it can be in the time of a global pandemic. At a time when other countries are still reporting tens of thousands of new cases and hundreds of Covid-related deaths each day, in New Zealand we are able to return to cafes, to bars, to rugby games. We are able to come together

without social distancing, and have those amazing face-to-face connections that we so missed. We are only able to do this because every New Zealander stepped up. Going hard and early required great sacrifice, and tragically some lives were lost. But now I think our team of five million can reflect on the pretty big milestone of being close to Covid-free. We cannot take this position for granted, as there could still be undetected cases in our communities, and there are still New Zealanders returning home from overseas. But I think we can all be very proud of what we’ve achieved, and rightly enjoy our new freedoms. We said from the beginning that our best economic response to Covid-19 was a strong health response, and the results speak for themselves. At Alert Level 1, New Zealand is now if not the most, then one of the most, open economies in the world. None of this happened by accident. It’s all part of the Government’s three-step plan to guide New

Zealand through the global economic shock caused by Covid-19: respond, recover, and rebuild better. And we will do it together. As we get close to the election, I’d like to say thank you. Thank you for your continued support Mid Canterbury – it has truly been an honour to be a Labour Party List MP based here in Rangitata. I’ve enjoyed the connections, conversations, and the work and help I’ve been able to provide to those that have needed it. That is what I’m most proud of – helping those that need it. Because that is why I am an MP – to help, to make changes, to be a voice. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it, and hope to continue it after the election also. Jo Luxton is a Labour list MP. A Mid Canterbury appeal to donate spare bales of feed to Hawkes Bay drought-affected farmers has received strong support, with about 900 received or pledged to date. Hinds dairy farmer Ben Stock, who initiated the Mid Canterbury Feed Run, said that more than 750 bales had already been donated, with another 150 pledged. The feed was about a 50-50 split of baleage and straw.

“There is a lot of good support. We are blown away by people’s generosity. “It is surprising the people that remember Hawkes Bay helping with feed after the big snow in 1992, so they are very receptive to giving back. “It’s just like gold in Hawkes Bay so they are extremely grateful,” Stock said. As KiwiRail had agreed to shift feed north for free, the feed would be donated, transported and railed at no cost to Hawkes Bay farmers. Mid Canterbury farmers, transport firms

and rural contractors had been quick to show their generosity, providing bales and baleage, as well as logistics to consolidate the feed for transporting north. From Monday, KiwiRail began transporting up to 10 40-foot containers full of hay bales per week from Ashburton as capacity allowed. From Wednesday, a wagon load of wrapped silage was transported from Timaru daily. Ben and Mary-Anne Stock initiated the Mid Canterbury Feed Run, following a similar venture by Wairarapa farmers Sophie and Daniel Hansen. To donate, people can sign up on the Mid Canterbury Feed Run Facebook page or email canterburyfeedrun@gmail.com. There is also a facility for those who wish to make a financial donation, organised through the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust. Details are available by emailing rst. treasurer.midcanterbury@gmail.com. Donated feed was being delivered to Quigley Feeds in the Ashburton Business Estate, where it was unloaded, packed into containers, then taken to the nearby railhead to be dispatched. “We have had a lot of help from transport firms, collecting bales and delivering them to Quigley’s yard. A person is individually wrapping the baleage so it lasts longer,” Stock said. As a similar initiative was also under way in South Canterbury, led by Levels farmer

Nicky Hyslop, the two groups had teamed up and were sharing resources and information. KiwiRail group chief executive Greg Miller said that while its freight volumes were still recovering in the post-Covid period, it had some limited northbound capacity “that we’ll be using when available, along with providing containers, to get this vital feed supply from Timaru and Ashburton up to Napier where it is needed”. Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers president David Clark said it was a generous gesture by local farmers to provide feed. “I’m sure those donations will be very gladly received by Hawkes Bay farmers. “It does highlight the shortage of feed in the North Island, especially in Hawkes Bay, and how vitally important the commercial feed market is, both from farmers and contractors which supply large quantities of high quality feed throughout New Zealand.” As a significant shortage of feed was forecast across New Zealand this winter, Clark encouraged farmers to prepare a feed budget to determine how much they needed to carry stock through to spring “then actively procure the feed they need while the last little bit is available”. A huge resource of feed grain remained available in the South Island, but efforts to facilitate sales to North Island farmers had largely failed to eventuate, Clark said.

■■ RUGBY LEAGUE

Baabaas ready to step up

By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton Barbarians are undaunted by the challenge that lies ahead. Local rugby league competitions get under way this weekend and the jolted season presents fresh challenges for the Baabaas. The Mid Canterbury side are one of three teams from last year’s division one senior grade making the jump to the Canterbury Cup Premier Reserves competition with division one scrapped altogether. Canterbury Rugby League said in a statement last week that due to the revised numbers of team entries post-lockdown there were not enough teams entered to warrant a sustainable division one grade this season. The Ashburton club are under no illusions of the step up, especially after the side was smacked by 40 points by the Eastern Eagles in a pre-season game at the weekend. Barbarians team manager Matt Milne said it was a big step up for the squad. “The focus is on getting out there and playing the best footy we can and learn as much as possible from these top sides,” he said. “A lot of these teams are very unknown to us.” The team’s only pre-season game highlighted to management where the side needed to improve if it wanted to be competitive, including fitness levels and fluency. “The boys worked pretty hard on Monday at training,” Milne said.

The Ashburton Barbarians take on the Northern Bulldogs in its Canterbury Cup opener in Ashburton on Saturday. PHOTO ADAM BURNS 130620-AB-3072 “Each week is just going to be a big learning curve.” A further challenge for the club is the loss of a portion of its playing stocks, the inevitable result of Covid-19 with players prioritising family and work commitments. However, the side had harnessed some young talent for the season ahead, Milne said. Its season prospects will rely on some of its key playing personnel. Hooker Seamus Smyth was a standout in his first season for

the Barbarians last year and the rake will be looking to carry on from where he left off. Dual forward Devaun Thompson has also returned to Mid Canterbury from Auckland in a welcome addition to the squad. The side will also look to the likes of Jarh Pukenga to lead from the front. The side, coached by Darryn Bolt and Taki Eketone, are set for a trial by fire for its first competition outing at Robilliard Park against the Northern Bulldogs. The Kaiapoi-based club were

one win away from a Canterbury Cup grand final appearance in 2019 and will offer a stern test for the home team on Saturday. The Barbarians will be buoyed by its loyal fan base when they take to the field on Saturday. “As long as we learn something from each game, I believe the players will get better with this higher level of competitiveness.” The Ashburton Barbarians vs Northern Bulldogs game kicks off from Ashburton’s Robilliard Park at 1pm Saturday.

Fatialofa welcomed back at Warriors Former Hurricanes lock Michael Fatialofa was welcomed back to his English rugby club yesterday for the first time in five-and-ahalf months. The 27-year-old suffered serious spinal injuries playing for Worcester against Saracens in the Premiership on 4 January. Having spent five months in hospital – the first of them in the Intensive Care Unit of St Mary’s Hospital in London – Fatialofa made remarkable progress during four months at the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital in Aylesbury. He was discharged 11 days ago and returned to Sixways yesterday to continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of Warriors’ medical staff. Fatialofa was applauded into the Warriors High Performance Centre by players and staff and greeted by ‘Welcome Back Fats’ banners. He spent almost two hours at Sixways where he met Head of Medical Ryan Kehoe and also had a stint on an exercise bike in the indoor training barn. For the players welcoming

With the lockdown it’s been a while since I have been able to visit him so it was great to see him face-to-face,” said scrum-half Jono Kitto.

“It’s just incredible to see how far he has come and how well he is doing. “We have all been thinking about him and hoping and praying that he is recovering well. Obviously he is. He will be stoked to be back home and the next phase of his recovery.

“I am so happy for him that he is progressing well and he is on the up.” As a fellow New Zealander, Kitto and his wife Lauren are close friends of Fatialofa and his wife Tatiana and they have provided valuable support during the lockdown period.

■■CYCLING

Nelson cyclist where she needs to be There were still a few tears when she left home for a second time, but the Nelson cyclist Niamh Fisher-Black couldn’t wait to get back to Italy. It’s been a tough three months for the 19-year-old who is now back in Italy hoping to get in something that might resemble a full pro cycling season. She was just a month into her first pro contract with Swiss Team Bigla-Katusha in Europe before she was forced home because of the coronavirus pandemic. Fisher-Black hadn’t even had a chance to race for her new team. So she’s spent the last three months training indoors before being able to get outside for a few rides with her brother Finn, who is also a European based pro cyclist. The national road champion has been back in Italy for a week, having spent a fortnight in quarantine in the United Kingdom. “As soon as things opened up in New Zealand and I could find a flight, I decided to go,” she said. Four months after saying goodbye to her parents for the first time at Nelson Airport, Fisher-Black went through the process again. “It was really sad but I think they (parents) knew how much I wanted to be over here and obviously it was very scary for them knowing the situation in the world at the moment, it’s not the easiest time to be travelling, but there wasn’t much they could say that would have changed my mind I was pretty adamant I wanted to come back so I’m definitely in a good place.” She lives in the town of Gavirate which is in the northern lake district near Milan. Her Bigla-Katusha team has racing plans from next month however getting together as a team is still difficult as many riders are still restricted in their travels within Europe. Fisher-Black will share a flat with her team-mate and fellow New Zealander Mikayla Harvey. “Being back riding in the Italian countryside is lovely, it’s nice and warm ... everything feels like it’s normal in Italy but I do have to make sure when I’m riding I carry a mask and sanitiser just to keep with the protocol.” While it feels good now, Fisher-Black reflects on a few dark moment when she was forced to train indoors in Nelson during the Covid-19 lockdown. “There were definitely a few daunting moments back in New Zealand thinking maybe I’ll never get back, when will I get back and everything seemed so far in the future.” “I became so desperate just to get back and that’s why I took the first opportunity I could and as soon as I arrived back I felt everything started to feel real again.”

Call a career highlight By Michael Guerin Robert Dunn received one of the most satisfying phone calls of his career last week. It was from the famous father of the man who Dunn will beat to win his first New Zealand trainer’s premiership next month. Dunn’s 83 wins for the season will be enough to win him the title even if he doesn’t add to the number as while Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen sit in 69 wins, they are effectively done for the season. Michael House sits third in 63 and as busy as he is it is hard to imagine him training 20 winners in six weeks so Dunn is the heir apparent to the title of premier trainer. And while he admits that feels a little strange because of the enormous interruption to the season, a phone call last week made it all feel so real. “Roy Purdon rang me to congratulate me on winning the premiership,” smiles Dunn. “It was a bit awkward because of the way the season has been and I told Roy I was lucky that

Mark and Nat didn’t get more of a chance to beat me. “But he said not to worry about that, it didn’t matter and that I deserved it and had been a good trainer for a long time. “That was when it hit home to me and to be honest that phone call from a man like Roy was one of the highlights of my career.” While Dunn’s southern stable is already back and racing and is certain to be good for a few wins to add to his ultimate premiership tally, his northern team starts rolling out in public at the trials this Friday. And that is a conscious decision he made not to rush them back to the races once the Covid restriction eased. The first pair back from the northern team will be Mighty Looee and You Really Got Me who will trial this Friday, the week after and then race in two weeks. “We have some really good horses to aim at the carnivals and that is why we can give some of them time to come up.” Spoken like a true premiership winning trainer.

■■NETBALL

Under spotlight The resumption of netball’s ANZ premiership will prove a real test of coaching acumen believes the coach of defending champions the Pulse, Yvette McCausland Durie. The competition resumes on Friday night when the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic play the Mystics. All of the games in the first half of the competition will be played in Auckland, meaning the Southern Steel, the Tactix and the Pulse will be clocking up the air miles. McCausland-Durie says with games being shortened to 10-minute quarters and teams having to play back-to-back matches, coaches will have to make adjustments. “Absolutely. The ability to think about the shortened quarters along with managing our playing rosters (will be key). It’s an area I feel really confident with – we have a good strong 10 ... and we have also got strong leaders who understand the high performance environment and we have been working really hard to make sure we’re ready,” McCausland-Durie said.

“This competition will be really interesting in lots of ways. Every team has got good balance across the court ... it will be really tough and competitive and add in the challenge of travel, I just hope we can come out the right side of it in the end.” “The back-to-backs will be tough, but that’s okay they’re just challenges sent to test us and there will be moments when it feels really tough but it’s something we are ready for and it’s something that we have talked about, but largely we just need to get on with it. McCausland-Durie is relieved her side doesn’t have the travel schedule of the Steel. “I mean you think you have it tough and somebody’s got it harder but we are up for the challenge and we want to be in the grand final, so we will do what we have to.” The Pulse resume their season against Northern Stars, the team they beat in last year’s final, on Sunday. The Steel play the Tactix on Saturday and the Tactix and Stars then square off on Monday evening.

■■FOOTBALL

Bayern nabs eighth straight win Bayern Munich won their 30th German football league title by beating Werder Bremen 1-0 away with a Robert Lewandowski strike to open up an unassailable lead at the top of the Bundesliga table. The Bavarians moved 10 points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who have three games left to play, and secured an eighth consecutive league crown. In a roller-coaster season that saw coach Niko Kovac fired in November with Bayern off the top spots and Hansi Flick

taking over, Bayern turned it around after the winter break, are unbeaten since and won their last 11 straight league matches. It was keeper Manuel Neuer who proved key for Bayern after they were left with 10 men for the final 10 minutes following the dismissal of Alphonso Davies, making a sensational one-handed save to ensure yet another league title. New Zealander Sarpreet Singh was again on the bench for Bayern, but will collect a winner’s medal having played for the first side in December.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Be on the lookout for ways to repurpose the past. Discarded scraps from one project/relationship/era can be reworked and turned into something new. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Giving is the theme. Give to the point where it feels good, and then go further. It shouldn’t hurt a lot, but it needs to hurt a little. The spiritual benefit of sacrifice can’t come if no sacrifice has been made. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Study and cultural exploration will bring you good fortune. You will feel determined to do your unbiased research, and you will refrain from forming an opinion until you have all of the facts. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): All superheroes know that most of the gig is hiding your identity until it’s time to shine. You’ve enormous strength and power; that’s a given. Knowing when to use it is the art. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll have ideas, and you need the right people to bounce them off of. People who absorb your energy and agree with you are not good bouncing prospects. Look for the hard and deflective types. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You can acknowledge your emotions without slavishly following their impulses. Your maturity allows you to objectively witness yourself. Your feelings will indicate how in line you are with your ethics and ideals. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Though it feels safe and secure when others agree with you, it’s not going to help you grow. You’ll sharpen your wits and strengthen your case when you run up against those who disagree. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Albert Camus said it’s necessary to fall in love, “if only to provide an alibi for all the random despair you are going to feel anyway.” Today’s events pose the question: Which comes first, the circumstance or the feeling? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): There is something you are tired of carrying by yourself. Someone else can help you lug the burden, or even better, cast it off. But you must be willing to share it. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The research suggests that improving your weaknesses, while noble in intent, is far less effective than leveraging your strengths. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Because of the complexity in the crevices of the human heart, people fit together unexpectedly and in ways so particular they would be impossible to duplicate. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Remember when you fell in love with a movie character? Remember when you believed in a book? Something doesn’t actually need to happen to feel real. Use this to your benefit.

JAB rugby is set to start next weekend.

JAB confirms return By Adam Burns

Junior rugby is set to return next weekend with a three month JAB programme outlined. It is understood the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU) have committed to a June 27 kickoff as community rugby completes its post-Covid comeback. The season will run through to September 26 with a break on July 11 during school holidays.

MCRU chief executive Ian Patterson had previously put the call out for timely player registrations so plans could be confirmed. The MCRU confirmed this week training clinics which are set to run during Term 3. A handful of tackle clinics have been organised by union development staff for early next month. “The tackle clinic was established to teach rugby play-

ers where to correctly position their heads in a tackle,” a MCRU spokesperson said, on its Facebook page this week. “The following skills and techniques will help players safely tackle more effectively, letting them enjoy their rugby even more.” A July 7 session for under-8s is mandatory for all youngsters participating in the grade. A clinic for under-9 to 13 play-

Race fields for today’s race meetings

ers will be held the next day. Another get-together focusing on scrummaging techniques for JAB players is scheduled for July 14. It is a big day for community rugby on Saturday. Alongside the start of Watters Cup and Senior B competitions, other age group teams are in action for pre-season showings. Both the Methven-Rakaia Colts and the under-18 Mid Canter-

bury Alps host Prebbleton teams in Rakaia from 1pm. Earlier in the day, Methven host Darfield in an under-13 pre-season matchup. Celtic’s senior women outfit are away to Linwood in the Metro Women’s competition. The Mid Canterbury Combined 1st XV travel to Nelson for an imposing UC Championship opener against defending champions Nelson College.
