Rape accused: It did not happen The trial of a Mid Canterbury man accused of raping two girls will enter its seventh day in the Timaru District Court tomorrow. The man is accused of abusing the girls over a three-year period and faces six representative charges of rape. The Crown’s case is that the man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his alleged victims, regularly engaged in sexual intercourse by touching the

girls and raping them, in their own beds and in a spa pool. The girls were aged between 6 and 10 during the offending period and one was found to have contracted a sexually transmitted disease when examined. The jury last week heard from Crown witnesses and watched DVD interviews recorded 18 months ago when one of the victims said the rapes began when she was eight.

The girl said the defendant gave her money after the acts. Defence lawyer Craig Ruane has said the man had denied the charges from the outset and that the events did not happen.

■ METSERVICE FORECAST

Hot day likely for Christmas By SuSan SandyS

expected in Ashburton today, 17 tomorrow and 27 on Thursday. Mid Canterbury has been brought some relief with rainfall in the past few days, and there are some showers and light rain forecast for this week. By 9am yesterday there had been 22.2 millimetres of rain recorded in Ashburton this month, compared to an average of 32 millimetres. MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said New Zealand can still expect the coming weather to be more changeable than during the past few weeks. “With the holidays approaching and people starting to make outdoor plans, it is worth remembering that the weather does change, and it always pays to keep an eye on the latest forecasts. “Don’t take fine weather for granted,” he said.

The mercury is set to soar on Christmas Day, reaching 30 degrees in Ashburton. Temperatures will be high leading into the day as well, 25 degrees on Saturday and 28 degrees on Sunday. MetService meteorologist Andy Best said the certainty of the forecast for Christmas Day at this stage was reasonably strong. The MetService gave most certainty with its five-day forecasts, however, meteorologists had been examining longer range probabilities due to the importance of this time of year. “We have been focusing on it because so many people have been looking at that day,” he said. Meanwhile, temperatures will yo-yo this week in the leadup to Christmas. A maximum of 24 degrees is

Popular run, walk series to resume Walk or run off your holiday indulgences in the Ashburton Run and Walk series beginning January 9. The popular series will be held on Tuesday nights at 6pm and will run through until March 27. Secretary of the group that organises the weekly event, Joe Ford, said around 100 people a week

were expected along to run or walk 3km or 5km. Ford said the series had gained a good following and was a great way to exercise off the Christmas and New Year indulgences, as well as keeping fit for summer sport or to begin preparation for winter sport.

“Many people there got to know others training for something or simply wanting to exercise and this encouraged people to meet up on other nights for a run or walk.” It costs $2 every Tuesday for adults, with children and students free. Details are on Facebook: Runandwalkashburton.

There’s no need to bring those skis out of storage By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

There are still pockets of snow on Mt Hutt, but not enough to allow the ski area to open on Christmas Eve. Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said yesterday that next year the ski area

may instead aim to hold a postseason day of skiing about one month after opening, instead of on Christmas Eve. There was no forecast snow, and the pockets left were not numerous enough in order to be able to link them up. Opening on Christmas Eve

was something the ski area guaranteed to do last year if it won New Zealand’s Best Ski Resort and if there was enough snow. It won the award, but unfortunately there was not enough snow. It postponed the Christmas

Eve skiing day to 2017, and as the ski area closed for the season in mid-October, there was so much snow it looked like it v could be a goer. However, hot summer days have since taken their toll. The aim is to hold a fun day, with a barbecue and skiers rid-

ing the lifts for a donation to a local charity. “Maybe next year we will do something earlier rather than trying to stretch it out to Christmas,” he said. This could be held about one month after closing for the 2018 ski season.

■ ASHBURTON HOLY NAME CHURCH

Samoan choir readies for Christmas By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Singing to the heavens on Christmas Day is a highlight of their Christian faith for Ashburton Samoan Catholic Choir members. The 30-member choir formed about seven years ago, and sings at Ashburton’s Holy Name Church at Sunday mass once per month. The choir will lead congregational singing as well as perform items at the church for Christmas Day mass, at 10am. Choir secretary Monica Taumaoe said performing on Christmas Day was the highlight of members’ faith, to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It also brought a special family connection for those who missed family members such as parents and siblings in Samoa. “We don’t have our families here, and having the choir, it’s like having our families here to celebrate Christmas together,” Taumaoe said. The choir will sing Te Harinui and carols such as Oh Come All Ye Faithful and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. The Samoan choir is one of three choirs who perform at the church. There is also the Filipino Choir, which also performs every month, and a Christmas and Easter choir comprised of other parishioners. The Christmas Choir will lead

■ ASHBURTON FIRE AND EMERGENCY

Early start for firefighters By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton firefighters had an early start wrestling with an oil fire in the Anzco Foods cafeteria yesterday morning. A deep fryer overheated shortly after 7am inside the Seafield Road factory at Pendarves. A team from Ashburton Fire and Emergency arrived around 7.20am and spent around 40 minutes tackling the blaze, which caused a little bit of damage to walls

and surfaces around the cafeteria. Officer in charge Jeff Marshall said being an oil fire, it was a little bit more difficult to put out. “Obviously being oil you can’t put water on it, but the café had fire blankets which we put on it. We also used dry powder fire extinguishers. “Unfortunately with those extinguishers there is a bit of a mess,” he said. “But luckily there wasn’t too much damage to the cafeteria itself.”

Parish priest Father Geoff Gray said it was a busy time of year. “We get reasonably good con-

gregations all the year, but if you come here 6pm Christmas Eve you wouldn’t get a seat,” he said.

Rape accused: It did not happen From P1 Giving evidence yesterday, the man said his DNA evidence had ended up on the girls’ bedding because he and his partner had enjoyed a romantic tryst while doing the housework. Crown prosecutor Andrew McRae, crossexamining the man, said the position of the semen made it appear as though the man had been having sex with the occu-

pants of the beds. The man said tests for HPV and genital warts had been negative, but McRae noted no blood tests had been done for confirmation. The man said the allegations were incorrect. Closing addresses will follow the defence case. Judge Joanna Maze will then advise the jury and ask them to deliberate.

A-team has Hope’s work in hand Brian Redoque’s eight-man “A-team” are ready to make light work of Hope McIntosh’s gardening needs. The crew stopped by her house on Wednesday to meet Hope and scope out the tasks that they will tackle later in December. Hope said it was “very nice” to have her Christmas wish granted.

“I wasn’t expecting so many people,” she said. The team will be helping Hope to clear up an area of her garden and remove carpet which was damaged in heavy rain earlier this year. With Hope’s son having suffered ill health, she said she hadn’t been sure who could help her with the tasks – until now.

“I just want to say Many thanks for arranging my outing to see Ashburton Christmas lights, thanks to Jeanette I spent an enjoyable evening on Friday out around the town and thanks to the folk who decorate their houses and share” - Margaret “I wish to thank the Guardian for a fantastic tidy up and pruning, at my home on Woodham Drive. So much appreciated, thank you. Also a big thanks to my daughter Trish for the nomination. Many thanks” - Shirley.

Generosity ‘overwhelming’

A helping hand from overseas

When a team of volunteers descended on Shirley Chibnall’s property and got stuck into her gardening needs on Friday, the generosity left her feeling quite overwhelmed. The news she had been nominated for a Christmas Wish by her daughter Trish came as a happy surprise for Shirley, who was thrilled to hear from Ashburton Guardian general manager Desme Daniels that she would be having her garden cleaned up and her trees trimmed. “I definitely wasn’t expecting it,” she said. “I was quite flabbergasted.” Shirley’s volunteer team consisted of Guardian staff themselves, along with their family and friends. Gold-Coast couple Kalar and Brett Holland were dropping by Ashburton to visit Brett’s family when Kalar picked up a copy of the Ashburton Guardian and spotted the Christmas wishes initiative. Before the two returned home, Kalar said she “just knew” she had to jump on board and help out where possible. “I just love the spirit of Christmas,” Kalar said. “And I love giving, especially to people I don’t know.” The two opted to don Santa hats and deliver baking around town before leaving on Friday afternoon.

Lucky recipient Russell Fox was “very happy” to receive tins of home-baked goodies to enjoy over the festive season, along with a warm Christmas wish penned in a card. Kalar also gave a small box of baking to the podiatrist working at Terrace View Retirement Village, and to a local Chinese acupuncturist who she had visited on previous trips to Ashburton. With butter and ingredient prices on the rise, home-baking isn’t as easy as it once was, Kalar said. “But I thought I’d just go for it. I wanted to give people the best of the best.”

Lighting up people’s lives If there’s one sight that truly ignites the magic of Christmas, it’s hundreds of glimmering lights festooning houses, chimneys and trees. But Margaret Bennett mightn’t have got a chance to see the town’s Christmas light spectacles this year, if it wasn’t for the kind efforts of volunteer Jeanette Cuthbertson. Jeanette and her family picked up Mar-

garet on Friday and gave her a nightfall tour around Ashburton’s best Christmas light displays, as listed on the Ashburton App. The group ticked off 28 properties in total, commencing with 77 Alford Forest Road, where Margaret said she felt like she had stepped into a “fairyland”. “It’s amazing to see,” she said.

When Alex Donaldson and her three friends heard two Ashburton residents wanted a bite of home baking this Christmas, they were quick to don their kitchen aprons and fire up the oven. The second year university students have recently returned to Ashburton for summer holidays, and were more than happy to help Judy Wild and Phyllis Hyde have their Christmas Wishes granted. Though they had missed out on the chance to help out with the Guardian initiative last year, Alex said the group all “love baking” and were really happy to do it for a good cause. “We made shortbread and bumblebee truffles,” she said. “It was really nice, they really appreciated it.”

Wish granted; weeds gone Dot McIntosh was all smiles on Friday night, after a group of volunteers from the Guardian took care of her pesky weeds. With her family all in Brisbane, the 84-year-old was happy to welcome the team to her Tinwald property and have a helping hand in the garden before Christmas. “I’m absolutely thrilled,” she said. “They were a great lot, and it’s so great to have the weeds out,” she said.

Mary Renner adores pottering around in her colourful Allenton garden. But dealing with sciatica, a medical condition that she “wouldn’t wish on her worst enemy”, had made it a little hard to tackle certain tasks this December – and Mary was in need of a helping hand. Fortunately, it was the Ashbur-

ton Guardian team to the rescue on Friday night, as an army of volunteers worked to tidy up the flowerbeds along the front of her property. Mary said she had never really asked for help before but was very grateful for having spotted the Christmas Wishes initiative in the newspaper. “I guess you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.”

OUR VIEW

Giving, it’s the ultimate in gifting Matt Markham

EDITOR

I

t is terribly cliché, but there really is no better gift to give at this time of the year than the gift of giving. No matter where you’re from, or what you do – there is always someone else who could do with a helping hand and Christmas is always a great time to be able to help those in need. Unfortunately, a lot of what the festive season is about has been lost in the commercial nature of the beast nowadays. We often get caught up in the hoopla of gifting presents to loved ones and can easily forget that all someone might need is a bit of companionship or a hand around the house. But perhaps it’s time to take back a little of what things used to be like. Maybe it is time to get out and do a good deed. We are again running our popular Christmas Wishes campaign here at the Guardian and we’ve had some fantastic offers of help for people in need from around the district – so much so in fact that things will probably continue into January. But we do need some more helpers. We’ve got residents out in our community who would love to have their windows washed, their gardens tidied up or their lawns mowed and we want to help them get what they need done. On Friday night a team of Guardian staff, friends and family went out on the beat for a few hours and granted a few of those wishes and I can assure you that the look and response of gratitude from those who we visited was enough to leave anyone content heading into Christmas next week. There’s a real sense of selfgratification in doing something good for someone else and every should give it a go. If that seems like something you might be quite keen on doing over the next week or so, then make sure you get in touch with us – we would love to be able to put you in touch with someone who needs a helping hand this Christmas. And trust me, you won’t regret offering up a little of your time.

Nina Mother’s and Father’s room where we can toilet and toilet our children and change nappies.. so we dont have to use a premises where a bus load of people have just been through. Catherine Make East Street one way, with wider footpaths on the shop side, wider grass on the other side, picnic tables, cycle path and bike stands, more plants. Drinking fountain. There is a great drinking fountain in Geraldine which is designed to make it easy to refill your water bottle (easy way to reduce the use of plastic bottles). Savann Parents room one that actually has enough room to bring in your pram with baby and young children to change them and have seats where woman that don’t feel comfortable breastfeeding in public can sit comfortably with their babies to feed. Better picnic tables in shaded areas so families or even workers can sit outside in town to enjoy their lunch.

Chris Start by filling the empty shops up the Main Street. It’s quite embarrassing considering the amount of new restaurants popping up at the moment. After that, a little more work on the grass areas available to people(baring square, Mona square, the domains) Malini I’d say some Indoor activities for kids especially during winter n buses services as I can’t remember when my kids went for a bus ride! NAIT responsibility – the buck stops with you L

et’s be frank – NAIT is not working as well as it should, and the blame lies with farm-

ers. Yes, the National Animal Identification and Tracing Scheme could be easier to use but that’s not an excuse for not keeping your animal tracking data up to date. There are a lot of farmers who say NAIT is waste of time and money. If you have that view then I’m sorry but I don’t think you care about the farming industry and are probably guilty of not being compliant. The problem was shown up with the mycoplasma bovis outbreak in South Canterbury and North Otago. MPI officials said they were able to fill in the gaps of NAIT non-compliance using other sources and information systems but it took longer than it needed to. There was clear warning that if it was an animal disease that was faster-moving, the NAIT noncompliance would be a significant issue. Now there have been infections detected in Hastings and Winton, and another potential infection being investigated in the Ashburton district. So it’s even more important that stock movement records are robust. NAIT currently does a good job of tracking animals that are registered and all their movements recorded on the database.

Chris Irons

FEDERATED FARMERS

But the system is only as good as the data put it. Owners, sellers and third party buyers have to be diligent about recording cattle and deer movements on their NAIT accounts. The system is fit for purpose when the data is up to date, but falls down when it’s incomplete, or not entered at all. If we have a fast moving outbreak it will be vital to have NAIT working so it’s up to all farmers to ensure they are compliant. These are some simple things you can do to make NAIT work better: ■ Check your NAIT account for the number of animals registered on your property. Does it match what’s actually on your land - and if not, why not? What is missing or where are the extras supposed to be. You should only have the number of animals that are on the property that the account is for. ■ If you have more numbers recorded on the NAIT account than on the, get the animals scanned to track the

I was interested to read comments from Neil Brown re: the Strategic planning for Ashburton. I agree that the labour situation is critical but, so it is throughout the country. If you think of our great district as a business it has fantastic backbone, great wealth generating components and recreational facilities which are the envy of most other towns and cities. So, what is missing? In any successful business it is the people that make it work, you need happy content, forward thinking people in all departments. We are fortunate to have many of these people, maybe create your planning task force with these people, but don’t just make a plan, let them do it. Historically the town and county has been built by them. If you

discrepancy. If you don’t have a scanner yourself, they’re available for hire (OSPRI and others hire them out) or if you have animals moving on and off regularly then you should investigate buying one. Consider it an investment in biosecurity. ■ Make sure all animals are tagged on farm and when you tag calves register the calves against the tag that it has. ■ Check all cattle or deer before they leave a property that they have a tag, and if you can scan them, that will show that they had a NAIT tag in them as they left . ■ You have to tag all cattle and deer that are six months of age, and/or before their first movement off the property. for non-compliance but that shouldn’t be the motivation for playing your part in this scheme. The fact is, it’s a vital part of our future wealth. The demands on our industry to be able to demonstrate strong traceability to maintain market access are only going to increase. If we fail on this front, we could be shut out of the best markets around the world where we can earn the best prices. We cannot survive on average prices; we have to aim for the premium end of the markets and that requires compliance.

Balcony crash ‘biblical’ The balcony collapse that killed two women in Melbourne at the weekend was the result of a Christmas photo gone terribly wrong, a neighbour has revealed. Describing the crash as “biblical”, Andrew Stone said the group of about 30 people had gathered on the balcony of the Doncaster East home to take a group photo. The railing of the large balcony remained intact, but its wooden floor gave in under the group’s weight causing partygoers to fall and become trapped underneath. A 59-year-old Croydon woman died at the scene and a Reservoir woman, 37, died in hospital on Sunday morning. A guest at the party, Casey Leerentveld, shared her devastation at losing “two wonderful friends and colleagues” in the tragedy. “Just wanted to let all know I’m OK,” the Tupperware consultant wrote on Facebook on Sunday night. “Thanks to everyone who has sent us their well wishes. Dislocated knee, fractured heel and lots of glass in my legs to be removed. “Still in shock and absolutely devastated at losing two wonderful friends and colleagues in this tragedy.” The balcony collapsed during what is believed to have been a Christmas party for Tupperware sales consultants. McGowan slams Streep Rose McGowan has slammed Meryl Streep for reportedly planning to take part in a “silent protest” against Harvey Weinstein. The 44-year-old star has blasted the group of actresses were were reportedly planning to wear black gowns to the Golden Globe awards next month as a symbol of objection against harassment in Hollywood, insisting they are hypocrites and suggested they should wear dresses by Marchesa, the label headed by Georgina Chapman, the estranged wife of the disgraced movie mogul, who walked out on him after multiple accusations of sexual misconduct came to light.

The balcony collapsed during what is believed to have been a Christmas party for Tupperware sales consultants.

Eve Nunn’s Facebook page shows a group photo from the event, with about 30 guests gathered on the balcony. It is believed the photo was taken at last year’s Christmas party from the same Tupperware group. Ten women and seven men, aged between 20 and 69, were taken to hospital and treated for soft tissue injuries, frac-

tures and lacerations. About a dozen others were treated by paramedics at the scene. Neighbours were shocked at the horror accident. “The crash was biblical. The sound of it was nothing like I had heard before,” Mr Stone told reporters at the scene. “People were bringing out chairs and pillows and blan-

kets and things like that just to help out the injured.” A guest at the party Jade Moana wrote on Facebook she was “tired, sore & shaken”, and said she and her husband were “both grateful to be here”. ment two months ago released unusual videos in the Pentagon’s secret vault. The videos had footage from encounters between fighter jets and “anomalous aerial vehicles”. Back in 2004, David Fravor

and Jim Slaight were flying off San Diego in each of their F/A18F Super Hornets. Hovering about 15m above the churn was an aircraft of some sort that was whitish, 40 feet long and oval in shape, Fra-

vor recounted. Once they arrived, the object disappeared. When asked of the situation, Fravor said: “I have no idea. It had no wings or rotors and outran our F-18s. I want to fly one.” - PA

Drink and drug-inspired Fleetwood Mac star Christine McVie says the group’s hit record Rumours may not have been successful without the influence of drink and drugs. The 1977 album, recorded during their turbulent years when their romantic relationships – mostly with each other – were falling apart, has been hailed as a masterpiece and sold more than 40 million copies. The singer-songwriter and keyboard player revealed she penned Songbird, one of the band’s most famous tracks, in the early hours of the morning, having taken cocaine and drunk champagne and been unable to sleep.

In fact, Stuff Fibre had not verified its claim.” “Traders need to remember a claim is unsubstantiated if they do not have reasonable grounds to make the claim at the time they make it – irrespective of whether the claim is false or misleading.” Stuff Fibre managing director Sam Morse said it accepted the commission’s decision. The company had intended to highlight that it only sold ultrafast broadband, which it believed was

the fastest and most reliable internet technology in New Zealand. “The commission is very agitated about the telco industry and the telco sector and they are being very diligent, and we comply and we accept their decision,” Morse said. ■ STATISTICS NEW ZEALAND

Property makes Kiwis wealth surge to $1.5t The steep rise in property has driven New Zealanders’ wealth up to $1.5 trillion in the past decade. Figures released yesterday by Statistics NZ show the net worth of New Zealanders rose $136 billion to March 31, 2016. That equals about $330,000 per person, but mainly reflects property ownership, Statistics NZ’s na-

tional accounts senior manager Gary Dunnet says. Net worth is the balance of what New Zealanders own over what they owe, and this is the biggest increase experienced in the past 10 years, he said. Household net worth is up 11 per cent or $134b in the past decade and was driven by $84b in

property values and $14b in currency and deposits. Insurance and pension funds make up 6 per cent of household assets. Financial assets, including bank deposits and shares, held by New Zealanders rose from $1780b in 2007 to $2575b in 2016, a rise of 45 per cent. - NZME

Stuff Fibre warned by watchdog Stuff Fibre has been warned by the Commerce Commission over its unsubstantiated broadband speed claims. NZ Fibre Communications Limited, which trades as Stuff Fibre, likely breached the Fair Trading Act because it didn’t have reasonable grounds for making the claim that it is “Probably NZ’s Fastest Internet”, the regulator said in a statement. Stuff Fibre hadn’t done any broadband speed comparisons with competitors and admitted it didn’t know if its broadband services were actually faster than its competitors. The commission took the view that the caveat “probably” was not effective to prevent customers from being misled, it said. “The internet speed claim is a matter of scientific fact that consumers would expect to be known and verified,” commissioner Anna Rawlings said. “If a trader is prepared to say it is “probably the fastest”, this will suggest to many consumers that they have done their research and

housing market – considered a risk to financial stability – has slowed over the past year as Reserve Bank restrictions on more highly-leveraged mortgage lending and tighter credit criteria being demanded by banks made it more difficult for borrowers. Also, uncertainty over the new government raised concerns about what impact a new policy regime would have on areas such as housing. Yesterday’s survey shows a growing number of pessimists on the outlook for consumers’ own financial state, with a net 14 per cent saying they were better off now than they were a year ago, down from 15 in November, while a net 28 per cent predicted they’ll be better placed in 12 months’ time, down from 29 per cent. Respondents were slightly less optimistic about buying big-ticket items, with a net 32 per cent saying now was a good time to buy versus 34 per cent in November. Annual expectations for con-

New Zealand consumer confidence dipped in December, the third consecutive decline, with both current and future conditions easing slightly. The ANZ Roy Morgan consumer confidence index fell to 121.8 this month from 123.7 in November. The current conditions index was at 123.3 versus 124.6 in the prior month, while the future conditions measure was at 120.9 versus 123.2. Of the 1002 respondents, a net 13 per cent saw good economic times in the coming 12 months, down from 18 per cent in November. A net 22 per cent were upbeat over the coming five years, compared to 23 per cent a month earlier. “Consumers appear to be pretty relaxed in the face of a cooler housing market and a change in government, though a degree of wariness is perhaps starting to creep into the forward-looking responses,” ANZ Bank New Zealand senior economist Phill Borkin said in a note. New technique ‘giant leap forward’ By Colin WillisCroft

Left – The two areas where space will be available free of charge for LIC customers until January 22.

Colin.w@theguardian.Co.nz

The limited release of a pasture management technique that utilises satellite technology is available to some Mid Canterbury farmers. Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC) last week launched SPACE (Satellite Pasture and Cover Evaluation), which uses satellite images to measure pasture, sending detailed reports directly to farmers by email. The new system has the ability to save farmers several hours a week by replacing the current way of measuring, which is done either walking the farm or towing instruments behind a vehicle. The technology hasn’t previously been commercially viable in New Zealand due to cloud coverage, but LIC’s satellite provider takes daily images to counter the cloud cover problem. LIC chief executive Wayne McNee said the project is part of LIC’s ongoing commitment to developing products and services that improve productivity and decision-making for farmers. “The SPACE service provides a game-changing opportunity for farmers to gain an objective assessment of pasture cover, which will result in more informed deci-

sion making around grazing, fertiliser and overall feed management. “Satellites that pass over daily give us the best chance to provide our farmers a clear image once a week, which is aligned to best practice for pasture measure-

ment,” McNee said. The satellites will pass over New Zealand daily and when a clear image is taken, a detailed pasture report is sent to the farmer within 24 hours. Initially SPACE will be available free of charge – from now until

January 22 – to Canterbury farmers who are LIC customers located within two 1000 sq km areas. One of those areas is south of the Ashburton River, while the other takes in property around Rakaia (see map). Ron Pellow, executive director

of South Island Dairying Development Centre, which has a farm that has been involved in trialling the new system, said the real opportunity for farmers is to know when pasture supply is going up or down, and to respond accordingly then and there, rather than two weeks later. “We know there’s a 25 per cent difference in milk production between the best farmers and the average, and most of that is due to pasture management. “SPACE will provide consistent, frequent data that can help significantly lift milk production from pasture. It could be phenomenal for New Zealand,” Pellow said. “The technology will also help reduce our environmental footprint as farmers will manage pasture better and therefore maintain production with less need for imported feed.”

Whyte Farming Company claims trophy antler honours Mid Canterbury’s Whyte Farming Company was one of the big winners at last week’s 2017 National Velvet and Trophy Antler Competition in Invercargill. It cleaned up in the trophy antler sections, taking home the Landcorp Trophy for the overall champion, with a 564 7/8 point, 22.88kg head from its seven-year-old bull Seattle, which also won the non-

typical section for elk/wapiti antler. The Ashburton Gorge Road -based operation also won the typical elk/wapiti section, as well as the first and second prizes for fallow trophy antler. The Rupert family of Geraldine claimed the event’s major award, with a 12.14kg head from its stag Axell 1183, winning the PGG

Wrightson Allcomers Trophy for the best velvet in the competition, as well as the open red section. The Rupert family’s entries also came third in the three-year-old red section and first in the fouryear-old red section. The head from Ronaldo 340, which won the Trish and John Fogarty Deer and Livestock Cup for four-year-old reds, attracted only 19.08 demerit

points – the lowest for any red entry in this year’s competition. Competition organiser Bruce Paterson said the competition and the awards dinner were successes. While the number attending the dinner – 180 – was down a little on last year, those who did attend had a great time. “A feature of this year’s competition was the number and quality

of the three-year and four-yearold red velvet entries. This year we tweaked the scoring formula so that weight contributes a maximum of 35 points. “This means it doesn’t have such a big influence on the final score … farmers with well-cut entries with very good style now stand a better chance of being successful,” Paterson said.

MARKET REPORT Dairy As the year draws to a close, the weather moves to a fluctuating phase with now some rain to mix with the very hot days. The dryland pastures have changed to golden colours and irrigators struggle to replace soil moisture losses in the heat, but last week’s 20mm of rain did boost summer and winter brassica seedlings. The fine weather has allowed the more mature saved pasture to be made into hay a month earlier than normal. Advisers are urging managers to do a thorough check of their stock water systems for leaks before summer proper as peak animal demand will test even those with plenty of storage. Much interest will be taken in this week’s dairy auction as the market seems to be at a crossroads. Buyers are having to decide how much the dry conditions will affect NZ’s supply or will increasing global production allow prices to ease further. The mycoplasma bovis outbreak took a turn for the worse last week with further outbreaks announced out of South Canterbury and into Southland, Mid Canterbury and even across the strait and into Hawke’s Bay. It appears all had links with the host farms, but some are questioning the efficiency of the NAIT system or how accurately farmers followed this procedure. The new Minster for MPI threatened to close Cook Strait for cattle movements and has asked officials to look into more transparency to allow neighbours to take precautions of cattle contact from the infected farms.

Lamb More falls in export lamb schedules this week as the dry has created strong demand for killing space for freshly weaned lambs. Store lamb numbers have lifted in Canterbury saleyards as impending feed shortages have managers destocking lighter animals unable to be finished before summer proper starts. Prime lamb prices are, however, around $30/head better

Mark Love

than they were this time last year, which makes the situation more frustrating, not being able to cash in because of the lack of feed. Present price levels for both lamb and mutton are now close to the minimum price contracts offered by one large processor for the Jan-March period and this will underpin the market for those with feed over the summer.

Wool Last week’s North Island wool auction saw most prices ease again but early fine lambs’ wool was traded over $6/kg and the total passings at this sale remained reasonably low. The currency has firmed on the back of positive sentiments for the appointment of the new Reserve Bank Governor and the demand for finer hogget types seemed to have dried up and they have fallen back in line with coarser wools.

Beef More easing of beef schedules right across the board this week, some caused by tight killing space, some by a weakening in the US market. The Chinese and domestic markets have remained strong to underpin prime animal prices, but prospects look softer post Chinese New Year and after the Christmas holiday period. Prime steers at local saleyards dipped to under $3/kg/lwt for the first time in 12 weeks, as numbers increased and more lower yielding dairy cross animals were offered into the market. Weaner bulls continue to be traded but prices are easing and buyers are discounting off these types more severely.

Deer Venison prices lifted again to now sit at record levels of $10.80/kg/cwt but reports suggest some price resistance is starting and this could be made worse by the firming currency. The first stag sale for the province occurred at Peel Forest Estate for maternal breed sires with venison genes; prices peaked at $18,000 and averaged just over $7500/head.

From first sermon to Christmas festivity By Connor Lysaght

J

ust a little over 200 years ago, on Christmas Day, 1814, Reverend Samuel Marsden conducted what is widely regarded the first formal Christmas sermon in New Zealand’s history. His was not the first Christian service to take place in New Zealand on Christmas Day. Both the voyages of Abel Tasman in 1642 and James Cook in 1769 celebrated Christmas in New Zealand waters. Tasman’s group feasted on freshly-killed pork from the ship and Cook’s sailors on gannet pie. In 1769, a Christmas Day service was conducted in Doubtless Bay by Father Paul-Antoine Léonard de Villefeix of the de Surville expedition. It is also likely that other early explorers, who visited New Zealand waters during the summertime, would have conducted similar services to mark this special day. But Marsden’s sermon is widely regarded as marking the advent of both Christianity and Christmas in New Zealand because he reached a new audience beyond those already wellfamiliar with the tradition. The man Marsden was born on July 28, 1764, in the town of Farsley, Yorkshire. Educated in both Hull and Cambridge, he easily rose to prominence, eventually becoming a minister of the Church of England. In 1800 he was appointed head chaplain of New South Wales and gained the reputation of working heroically in the penal colony, although not without controversy. Marsden was by no means a paradigm of a man, as he gained notoriety for severely punishing his labourers, despite treating others generously. Among those he treated well were several Maori guests that he entertained at Parramatta, where he lived. Through them, he gained an interest in New Zealand. New Zealand had at that time become surrounded by stigma following an event known as the Boyd incident, in 1809, where numerous Pakeha and Maori were killed.

Above – The second Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, built in 1882. Below – The old F. Frost Butcher’s window, proudly displaying some fine carcasses.

Above – St Stephen’s Church, decorated lavishly for celebration. Left – Samuel Marsden, from the frontispiece of Life and Work of Samuel Marsden.

This delayed, but did not sway Marsden from wanting to mount a mission to New Zealand. He departed on December 17, 1814, arriving in the Bay of Islands on December 22. Marsden’s assistants and good friends, Ruatara, Hongi and Korokoro, introduced Marsden to the locals, and it was agreed that a service take place on Christmas Day, thereby setting foundations that over the following decades would spread throughout New Zealand. Ashburton Christmases In many ways, colonisation normalised Christian customs and traditions in New Zealand,

including Christmas. Ashburton’s first newspaper, The Evening Echo, gives early insight into how Christmas was celebrated. It records that in 1878 carol singers paraded through the streets until 3am and that services were held in both the Episcopalian and Wesleyan churches. Otherwise, according to The Evening Echo, the town was so quiet, it would have the “appearance of a Sabbath”, as business was suspended for Christmas. Many people also absconded to the seaside, or other summer holiday locations – a tradition that’s definitely stuck.

As time goes on, it becomes apparent that as New Zealand developed, Christmas has stayed much the same at its core, while decorative practices and activities have changed a lot. Throughout the 1880s, Christmas articles from the Ashburton Guardian give insight into how Christmas was celebrated. Walking through town on Christmas Eve, 1886, you would see every shop displaying their best selection of goods in their windows. One such example was a display put on by Mr Flower, a confectioner, who had Merry Christmas spelt in split almonds

on toffee, in the window of his store on East Street. Shop window displays were also embellished with designs made from coloured card, evergreens, and other decorative plants and items, much like today. Despite all the cheer, there were undoubtedly a few Scrooges, as an editorial written in 1889 ridiculed those “miserable individuals” who do not enjoy Christmas. From 1900 onwards, Christmas continued to change in little ways, resulting in the familiar holiday people know and love today.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of World War One, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men. The Ashburton Museum, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton, has erected in front of the museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. This week the Ashburton Museum honours:

No stressing over Gayle Chris Gayle brings some added firepower, but the Black Caps have plans in place to stamp him out, batsman Tom Latham says. After being decimated by the Black Caps in their two-match test series earlier in the month, the West Indies will get a boost to their lineup with the selfprofessed World Boss suiting up for their one-day international (ODI) and Twenty20 matches. Gayle, 38, joins the side for the three-match ODI series, which begins in Whangarei tomorrow, in blazing form after crashing 18 sixes on his way to scoring 146 runs in the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 final. “We know what a quality player he is and how much of a threat he can be when he gets going so hopefully we can bowl well to him early on,” Latham said. In ODI cricket, Gayle averages a shade above 37 runs in his 273-match career and against New Zealand he has shown if he gets going he can be hard to stop. In his last five innings against the Black Caps, dating back to July 2012, Gayle has scored more than 16 runs just twice, but posted scores of 61 and 125 in those two innings. “We’ll have our plans to bowl to him … we’ve got some good bowlers in our side so hopefully we can contain him,” Latham said. The 25-year-old Cantabrian is expected to captain the side after the first match of the series, with incumbent captain Kane Williamson being rested. The New Zealand test opener will also be donning the wicketkeeping gloves and batting in

The Waca pitch debacle is an appalling “embarrassment” for Australian cricket, veteran cricket correspondent Robert Craddock reckons. The cricket scribe’s damning appraisal of the Waca’s failure to protect the wicket from the elements comes as the chances of play resuming continued to deteriorate. Australia were strong favourites, despite the gloomy weather predictions, at stumps on day four, but the home team’s odds of wrapping up the Ashes in Perth have been blown out by the shocking soggy Waca deck. - AAP

Wicket ball ‘lucky’ Black Caps pace bowler Lockie Ferguson believes the so-called ball of the summer was more luck than skill. Australian quick Mitchell Starc bowled England batsman James Vince with an unplayable delivery that struck a crack on the WACA pitch on day four of the Ashes test in Perth. Ferguson says there’s nothing Vince could have done. “In hindsight you can’t really look at a technical deficiency if the ball seamed that much off the crack, so I guess it’s just one of those things.” - NZME

Root weighed down Self-proclaimed World Boss Chris Gayle will be hoping to continue his recent explosive form. the middle order for the whiteball series. “There’s a little bit more pressure but it’s great there’s a lot of other guys around the group in terms of the captaincy, lots of senior players that I’m able to lean on. “Coming in the middle order gives you a little bit more freedom than opening the batting on day one of a test. “It’s a nice refreshing change and I’m sure the boys are looking

to a big part of white-ball cricket coming up over the next few months. “It’s just about being a little bit more aggressive and having a few more options to find boundaries. “I guess in test cricket you can sort of wait a little bit and wait for a bad ball whereas in whiteball cricket you have to be a little bit more proactive and try make them bowl bad balls as opposed to waiting for them.” And while the Black Caps

seemingly had their way with the West Indian side in the test series, Latham said that his side were under no illusions whatever that the visitors would go down without a fight, despite being without key players Sunil Ambris, Alzarri Joseph and Marlon Samuels. “They’re a quality side and certainly have a lot of matchwinners, so we’re going to have to play really well to beat them.” - NZME

Watson weighing up future in the Big Bash Sydney Thunder skipper Shane Watson is unsure if the 201718 Big Bash League season will be his last but is well-placed to make it his best. The 36-year-old is coming into

Pitch ‘embarrassing’

the third and final year of his contract with the Thunder and is weighing up whether to play on. After belting an unbeaten century in club cricket just over a week ago, the former test all-

rounder goes into tonight’s season-opener against the Sydney Sixers in form. Watson smashed 114, including 16 sixes, for Sutherland in a Twenty20 clash, following on

from a mammoth 184 off 151 balls in a grade match in October. After an injury-plagued 201617, Watson went back to grade cricket to ensure he had runs and confidence under his belt. - AAP

England skipper Joe Root has the weight of the world on his shoulders, and it’s starting to affect his form. That’s the opinion of former Australia skipper Michael Clarke, who says England’s poor form during the current Ashes series has played a key role in Root’s struggles. Root has failed to live up to his lofty standards over the first three tests, scoring 176 runs at an average of 29.33. It’s a far cry from his overall test average of 52.37. - AAP

Dunk backs bowlers While much is being made of their swashbuckling batting line-up, Ben Dunk is backing his Melbourne Stars bowlers to get the job done in their opening Big Bash League clash with Brisbane. The twotime leading BBL run-scorer left Adelaide to add to an already talent-laden roster at the Stars, which includes Glenn Maxwell, Kevin Pietersen and Luke Wright. The Heat boast the ‘Bash Brothers’ in Chris Lynn and Brendon McCullum, but Dunk backed his bowlers to contain the duo. - AAP

MSA does best in Milsom Cup By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Sunday saw bowlers hit the greens at the Ashburton Bowling Club for a special tournament on the local bowling calendar. Twelve teams contested the Milsom Cup Men’s Fours, which

is the sole men’s only event held in Mid Canterbury during the season. It was first contested in the 1953-54 season and as such is one of the longest-running bowling tournaments held in the district.

While the event used to bring in around 30 teams, only 12 battled it out on the greens on Sunday. 1st: Linton Muir, John Argyle, Charlie Cleghorn, Shane Calder (Ashburton MSA) – 4 wins, 25 ends, 38 points.

2nd: Alec Crawford, Bruce White, Graeme Clarke, Wayne Lloyd (Allenton) – 3 wins, 23 ends, 47 points. 3rd: Colin Dennis, David Muir, Alastair Mackenzie, Gavin Eder (Ashburton) – 3 wins, 20 ends, 44 points.

Southby names extended squad for series Silver Ferns coach Janine Southby has named an extended 14-strong squad for the January Quad Series – but there still wasn’t room for one recent frontline player. Gina Crampton was the main casualty from yesterday’s naming, with the Steel midcourter and young Magic shooter Monica Falkner the only two members from the wider squad not to make the cut for next month’s tour. Recently married midcourter Grace Kara (nee Rasmussen) has replaced Crampton in the lineup, joining athletic in-circle defender Phoenix Karaka in making a return after missing October’s Constellation Cup series. Kara is not the only new name, but familiar face, in the line-up. The shooting end will feature Maria Folau, nee Tutaia, after the Ferns vice captain wed Austral-

ian rugby star Israel Folau in the off-season. Young midcourter Whitney Souness and Jane Watson have secured their spots in the touring party. Dynamic midcourter Souness missed the Australian leg of the Constellation Cup for family reasons and was replaced by defender Watson. “This is a big tour in terms of the travel with short turnarounds between flying from New Zealand, playing in England and then on to South Africa,” Silver Ferns coach Janine Southby said. “For that reason we are travelling with 14. This will enable us to continue to develop and build depth and combinations across the squad. “The Commonwealth Games [in April] is the immediate focus but we’re also mindful the 2019 Netball World Cup is not that far

With Commonwealth Games spots up for grabs, the Netball Quad Series presents the last opportunity for players from the Silver Ferns, Australian Diamonds, England Roses and South African Proteas to press their claims ahead of teams being named for the Gold Coast event. Former Blues skipper Danny Buderus has been appointed NSW State of Origin assistant coach only a few weeks after Brad Fittler got the top job. The NSWRL announced Buderus would take on the role as the Blues plot to break the stranglehold of Queensland, who have won 11 of the past 12 Origins. Last month, Fittler was named as coach, replacing Laurie Daley. Buderus and Fittler played alongside each other for NSW between 2002 and 2004. - AAP

Supermaxis clash again A sailing rivalry between the Black Jack group and the Oatley family, which started almost a decade ago, is enjoying a new lease of life heading into the Sydney Hobart. Supermaxis Wild Oats XI and Black Jack have raced against each other 11 times this year, with the former edging the line honours six to five. It marked the resumption of a rivalry which first saw the two groups race regularly in boats twothirds the length of their current vessels. Back then, it was Wild Oats X up against an earlier Black Jack. “We raced against each other in 66-footers a few years ago and it was just fantastic racing,” Black Jack’s owner Peter Harburg said. “It’so good be able to come and compete with them again.” - AAP

■ AUCKLAND CUP

In brief

Fresh approach for Maxim Classy pacer Maxim remains on course for the Auckland Cup in 13 days’ time, despite not having raced since the New Zealand Cup five weeks ago. A bout of soreness after his unlucky fourth in the $800,000 feature has seen him restricted to mostly swimming and beach work since. “He seems pretty good; it just took him a week or so get over it,” said trainer Brent Mangos. “We’ll probably just go in to the Auckland Cup without a run beforehand.” Going over two miles fresh-up after seven weeks is hardly ideal, but Mangos says Maxim has held his fitness well in the interim. “He hasn’t lost any fitness. “He’s been down to the beach a few times, swum in the pool and done a bit of everything. “I’ll probably take him in to Pukekohe for a couple of good private hit-outs in the next week or so and that should top him off nicely.” Mangos spent his weekend wondering how his juvenile pacer Smart Fortune could go out paying $19.20 in a five-horse Young Guns heat at Alexandra Park on Friday night. The Perth-owned son of Art Major led the whole way and won handsomely. “I couldn’t work that one out. “He’d won all his trials and, while I know he hadn’t gone any great sort of time, he’d done it well. “I’m going to give him 10 days off as he had been in work for a fair while. “We’ll get him back ready to

Railway start on cards Genuine sprinter Irish Moon may have earned himself another crack at the Gr.1 Sistema Railway (1200m) on New Year’s Day. The eight-year-old won for the 10th time in his career when successful under 58kg at Awapuni on Saturday prompting trainers Ken and Bev Kelso to be consider the Ellerslie feature. “He will get 55kg under the set weights and penalty conditions,” Ken Kelso said. “If he drew an alley he would be a chance. He’s just a good, honest campaigner.” - NZME

Derby start on the line Persian Empire is closing in on a trip home for next year’s Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m). “He’s a nice, progressive horse who ran second at Moonee Valley last time,” said Trent Busuttin, who trains with his partner Natalie Young. “He’s having a freshen-up and there’s a couple of races coming up for him. “If he wins one that would book his ticket to New Zealand. We could run him at Ellerslie in the Derby Trial a fortnight before the Derby. “He’s by Savabeel so he will get over a Derby trip and the race is worth a million dollars.” - NZME

about three weeks. Maybe five or six are ready to roll out and they’re all going ok without one being better than the others.” Another Howlett-owned horse is three-year-old trotter Storm Cloud, an impressive maiden winner at Alexandra Park last month. Mangos expects him to be a

horse capable of tackling age group features as the season wears on. “I’d like to hope he will measure up against the good ones; he seems to have a bit of bottom to him and is a good, strong horse. “I tipped him out for a bit and he’ll be back trialing in mid-January.” - NZHN

Shaune Ritchie has yet to commit Devise to the Gr.1 Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. The Cambridge trainer said he will monitor the mare over the next couple of days following her last-start effort for fourth in the Gr.2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) at Te Rapa. “They were genuine Group One horses that beat her and it was quite a hard run on Saturday, if she’s well that’s where she’ll go. Otherwise the Trentham Stakes will suit her beautifully. ” - NZME

■ JOCKEY BACK ON TRACK

Laking makes a winning comeback to the track Group One-winning rider Jason Laking has made a statement on his former home track of Wingatui where he posted a winning double in what is his comeback season as a professional jockey. The Ashburton-based rider was successful on Friday aboard the Andrew Carston-trained Frazzle and the Shane Kennedy and Anna Furlong-trained Los Cabos. “It was a pretty good feeling,” Laking said of his first winning rides since his initial retirement from the professional jockey ranks in the 2010-11 season. “I was lucky the horses were all primed and ready to go.” He is best known for his association with New Zealand champion three-year-old and dual Group One-winner The Jewel, whose senior trainer Hec Anderton was Laking’s former riding master. He rode The Jewel to eight of her 11 victories, including the Gr.1 New Zealand One Thousand Guineas (1600m) and highlighted her as the best horse he has ridden. “I probably got her too early (in

my riding career),” Laking said. “In hindsight it probably would have been better if I got her a little bit later. “The Dennis boys (owners) were so loyal to me. It is just one of those buzzes that you get once and you always want to try and get it again.” It is that winning feeling that enticed Larking out of retirement as he found he still had an itch to scratch after riding in a few amateur races in recent years. “I had finished up because my weight was a bit heavy and Terry Kennedy asked me to ride one for him one day (in an amateur race) because you’re allowed to ride after three years away from being a professional,” he said. “I kind of wanted to go back because I thought if I ride in an amateur race it might quench the thirst for riding and get it out of my system, but it made it worse and it made me want to come back even more. “My weight had kind of steadied out a bit. I’ve obviously got a little bit older and changed my eating

Jason Laking gets the best out of Frazzle at Wingatui. habits, not a lot of drinking and that sort of thing, so my weight started to come down a bit so I thought why not give it another go?” Laking was duly rewarded on Friday, but it hasn’t come without hard work.

He makes the 180km round trip from Ashburton to Riccarton racecourse a couple of times a week to ride work as well as holding down a full-time job at Midlands, a seed company, in Ashburton. “I drive up to Riccarton from Ashburton two to three days a

week, predominantly for Shane Kennedy and Anna Furlong and I do one or two for Andrew Carston,” Laking said. “They have got big teams in work and have got a lot of good horses. I have got a full-time job in Ashburton as well, so they work around that which is good.” Laking said he also owes a lot to Midlands who have been really flexible in allowing him to follow his riding career. “Chris Green who owns Midlands owns Planet Rock and has a few horses with Peter and Dawn Williams. They let me go to the races and trials and ride work, without them I probably wouldn’t be able to do it. “To be honest, for a South Island jockey you have got to have a second income because it is hard to make money if you are just riding.” With three children under the age of five, Laking is being kept very busy, but hopes to continue his winning ways in the saddle and break back into the South Island riding ranks. - NZME

WordWheel

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): It’s all temporary – the mood, the circumstance, the things you want out of this... and yet, it matters. You’ll feel as though you’re defining yourself with the action you take. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’ll be looking for ways to do more and need less and you’ll find them. There’s magic in this pursuit. It will also be quite addicting, especially in the case of doing things for others. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ve often had the impression the game is rigged. Today that suspicion comes sneaking again, although this time it seems to be rigged in your favour... so is that going to be a problem? CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Whether it’s emotional or actual baggage, you’ll be less effective trying to dead lift it on your own. You can handle much more weight with a little strategy. Can it be leveraged? Can it be rolled? LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): An ordeal can be an adventure and an adventure can be an ordeal, and today they’ll be one and the same, depending on how you look at this. It’s easier to approach it brightly when there’s someone to impress. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Trial and error is the only way to learn this complex thing you’ve taken on. Theoretical knowledge will help, but it can only take you so far. Mastery will be eventual and inevitable. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’re great at slipping into the mindset that will serve the moment best. This is a talent in and of itself – a sign of emotional genius really – and you’ll be able to trade on it for some nice dividends today. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It’s not important they know everything you mean. It’s better that they don’t. As people fill in the blanks with their own story, they connect with you. Mysteries are opportunities. Voids are invitations. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Nothing and no one stands alone. Organisms, tribes, cultures... from bacteria to trees to animals and people, it’s all working together. As much as you’d like that not to be true today, it still is. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): There’s not one bad thing on your to-do list today. You could potentially take pleasure in every activity. The thing is, there are so many of them, and most of them rather pressing. You can do this! AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your day-to-day is slowly morphing into a different pattern. Your style is changing, too. But your values will stay the same. Like a developing child, you will fulfil the potential of what you always were. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Kindness and self-respect are at the centre of your decision to own your actions. We’re all just learning and in need of both encouragement and correction.

poverty doesn’t take a break at christMAS Life hasn’t been easy for the Collins family. The cupboards were empty, the bills piling up and they couldn’t afford their rent. When the family received an eviction notice they knew they needed help, so they turned to their local Salvation Army. The Army addressed their most serious issues first, starting with their living situation and then with financial support programmes and food parcels. This Christmas, The Salvation Army will give care to over 17,000 families, providing support from food parcels to counselling and accommodation. You can help families like the Collinses. Please support our Christmas Appeal and give hope to those who need it most. Call 0800 53 00 00 or give at salvationarmy.org.nz

Morning cloud and isolated showers, especially about the coast. Becoming fine in the afternoon. S, dying out in the afternoon. HARRIS, Dennis – On the fifth anniversary of Dennis Harris – 19-12-2012. Thinking of you, the day you went away. Today, like many days brings special thoughts of you, of happy times we shared and caring things you used to do. And once more, it’s a reminder that life’s road is sometimes rough, because the time we shared just wasn’t long enough. For you were someone special, who was thought so highly of, who’ll always be remembered with affection, warmth and love. So, sending thoughts to heaven on the day you went away and hope you know you’re missed, more than words could ever say. With love, Kevin & Katrina. xxxx

Sport Pistons tie team record Reggie Bullock has scored a careerhigh 20 points as the Detroit Pistons tied a franchise record with 17 threepointers in a 114-110 NBA victory over the Orlando Magic. The Pistons have won three in a row after starting December with a seven-game losing streak, to improve to 17-13 and fourth spot in the eastern conference. They almost let it slip away when Orlando went on a 19-0 run late in the fourth, but Detroit held on. Toronto Raptors made it 20 wins for the season in their 108-93 home win over the Sacramento Kings.

With plenty to race for, a good field of riders went to the line in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s Ashburton MSA Liquor Centre Club Championship, 64km mass start event around the Wakanui Beach block. Kircher and Tony Ward made a break inside the first 25km and built a buffer between them and the chasing bunch. A concerted effort late in the race saw the chasing bunch pull the break back inside the last 10km, setting up an exciting finish. It was Kircher however who regrouped and out-kicked the

opposition in the charge to the line to lift the major spoils, riding the distance in 96.40. Steve Hands charged into second place and also took the senior championship ribbon. Ward was rewarded for his aggressive ride, securing third place. Kristine Marriott put together a strong ride to secure the open women’s and veteran 1 titles in a tight battle with second place getter Rachel Thow. Matt Clough put his multisport talents to the test in securing the U19 title. Alex Hooper rode strongly in the chasing group to claim the U23 title. Michael Gallagher was another to find some good form in the last race of the calendar year to lift the men’s vet 1 ribbon.

The juniors also raced for club titles over 16km. Oliver Davidson built on his improving year on the bike to secure the U17 club championship title, riding the course in 24.16.

Caitlin Titheridge showed a good set of heels in the charge to the line to lift the girls’ U17 championship title, in a tight contest with second place getter Bella Roulston. Ethan Titheridge had an eyecatching ride to take the U15 title, beating off the challenges from Ashton Stanger and Jack Templeton, who claimed second and third places respectively. Maddi Lowry continued her good form to lift the girls’ U15 club title, from Paige Kiesanowski and Lily Davidson. Paige took the sealed handicap spoils from Jack and Lily.
