Smoke alarm warning – Consumer By Katie todd

■ ASHBURTON’S COLDSTREAM HOUSE

Resthome changes hands By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

A new, national player is about to enter Ashburton’s aged-care market with the pending sale of Coldstream House to Heritage Lifecare Limited. The care facility will pass out of the hands of long-time owners Vicki and Richard Green on June 21, but for staff and residents life will continue unchanged, Heritage executive chairman David Renwick said. There will be one immediate change, however, a name change, with the facility to be known as Coldstream Lifecare and Village. Heritage already owns 29 care facilities in provincial areas and across New Zealand has 2100

care beds and 600 independent living units. The opportunity to expand into Ashburton was an exciting one, Renwick said. “We were attracted by the opportunity to get into an area where we knew there was a growing demand.” The new owners would sit back and see how the facility operated for the first few months and if any changes were made they would only be minor, he said. Staff had been assured that their jobs would continue. Because Heritage’s major investor is an off-shore private equity fund, the sale had to be approved by the Overseas Investment Commission. This approval has been given and final

details of the change of ownership were now being worked through, Renwick said. For the current owners, the decision to sell a business they have owned since December 2007 was a tough one, however, they will continue to own and operate their other Ashburton facility, Princes Court. Their company Greenvale owns land around both Princes Court and an Invercargill resthome and will now explore options for developments around those facilities. “It was sad to sell, but it was the right business decision,” Vicki Green said. They bought Coldstream House from Bruce Alborough in December 2007.

Consumer NZ and FENZ are warning people against using a model of smoke alarm stocked by multiple retailers across Ashburton. Ionisation-type smoke alarms performed so “poorly” in recent Consumer NZ tests that the watchdog is calling for them to be pulled from shelves. Ionisation models and photoelectric models are the two main types of smoke alarm and ionisation models tend to be slightly cheaper. However, Consumer NZ said they give much less warning of smouldering fires, such as those caused by faulty electrical wiring, curtains draped over a heater, or a hot ember igniting upholstery foam. All smoke alarms will respond to a fire eventually, but people with an ionisation model smoke alarm were less likely to escape their homes safely in the event of a fire, they warned. FENZ Fire Risk Management national adviser Peter Gallagher said his organisation had been recommending for over a decade that people use photoelectric, long-life smoke alarms rather than ionisation models. He said based on current knowledge about smoke alarm performance, photo-electric alarms are generally considered to be more effective than their ionisation counterparts across a range of fires. “The two types can detect different types of smoke … and photo-electric ones can basically give you warnings in the earlier stages of the fire,” Ashburton fire risk management officer Bevan Findlay said. Consumer NZ advised that peo-

Bevan Findlay ple should check which type of smoke alarm they have in their homes and rental properties. Ionisation alarms usually feature a radioactive symbol somewhere on the alarm body, and photo-electric alarms can be purchased at hardware stores in Ashburton for just $8. However, both FENZ and Consumer NZ urged that any working alarm is better than no alarm and ionisation models should not be removed if they are not being replaced. “You’re better off with ionisation than nothing,” Findlay said. “Smoke alarms are especially important when people are sleeping as they lose their sense of smell, so they won’t smell the smoke,” Gallagher said. Findlay said on the whole, Ashburton residents were pretty good at fitting their houses with working smoke alarms. “It’s good not to be apathetic and there’s always room for improvement … but most people I talk to have a good attitude,” he said.

Students get creative during workplace visit By Katie todd

To some, the idea of pursuing a creative arts career might seem a daunting or disillusioning experience, perhaps conjuring imagery of abandoned manuscripts or discarded artworks. But stepping inside the JFM Marketing & Design studio on Thursday, students from ARA Institute’s Ashburton campus glimpsed a far more exciting reality – creative artists and storytellers working as professional marketers in a sophisticated studio environment. During the workplace visit students were shown the creative process of how an idea is developed into a result that achieves a business objective. For graphic and website designer Justine Tull a day at work could involve developing an udder logo for a Canterbury dairy farm, creating a billboard around a truck, or bringing an engaging website to life, from her sketchbook to the screen.

Marketing communications assistant Janice McKay described how she had been helping a local restaurant to rebrand and garner a social media following through a successful Facebook post. “I do anything with words involved. Justine and I work as two halves to create a product,” she explained. The workplace visit also showed that career pathways are not always linear and are often filled with challenges along the way, JFM Marketing director Jo Foster said. Meanwhile, for mums on the course it was an opportunity to see another parent – Foster – working successfully in a creative career and negotiating a worklife balance. The ARA students are currently studying the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills – designed to provide either the entry level qualifications for more advanced study, or build on students’ existing skills to give them a leg-up into new employment.

Nine councillors or 12? Your choice By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

The public is about to have its say on the number of district councillors it should take to run the Ashburton District, but two current councillors are not happy with the numbers proposed. At Thursday’s council meeting councillors were due to sign off the proposal to reduce the number of councillors from 12 to 9 over three wards and for two minor boundary adjustments to be made. Councillor Selwyn Price was not happy. He voted against the change when it was first discussed and he continued to argue against it at Thursday’s meeting. “I’ve asked a lot of questions around this issue and not one question has been answered. No-

one can tell me how people of this district would be better represented with nine councillors not 12?” The change was being made to fit within recommended population representation levels, Stuart Wilson said. “From what we’ve ascertained with other districts of the same population base we’re a bit over represented with 12.” In the past councillors were the first point of contact for the community on any issue. They were hands-on, Wilson said. “Nowadays our work is more administrative and we have big management teams to handle the day-to-day things. It’s a very different occupation now to the day when we used to be the people who bought the graders.”

BLOCKED DRAINS

Dairy Saucer/Wedge/Sump and Drain Clearing.

Technology and modern communications meant councillors were able to deal more rapidly with issues and work from home and had made the job quite different to the days when agenda came by mail, Peter Reveley said. “And look at large boards, they now only have five or six people. I don’t think anyone will be disadvantaged.” A smaller number of councillors made it easier to work effectively and efficiently, Russell Ellis said. “There is better cohesion and you can often achieve more with less. If the community doesn’t think we’ve got it right they’ll tell us so,” he said. Price wasn’t happy. He wanted the council to change the consultation document to 12 council-

Allen’s Ashburton offer a great service

lors. He said the community didn’t have enough or the right information on the issue. “There are some very inaccurate conceptions out there, people think the quality of councillors will be improved or that only the best qualified will be councillors. I’m not sure what qualifications you need. I don’t believe people in the community have been given sufficient information to understand the implications of having less councillors. How will people be better represented by less councillors? I don’t believe they will be,” he said. Thelma Bell agreed and said she was concerned that fewer councillors would mean more work for each one. Theirs were the two lone voices voting against the commu-

nity being consulted on a change to nine elected members at the 2019 election. Public consultation on the representation review opened yesterday. An open day will be held at the council chambers on June 1 between 1pm and 4pm for people to drop in and learn about the proposed arrangements and what they would mean for the district. The representation proposal follows an online survey conducted in February this year in which residents were asked what they thought about some early suggestions for the council’s representation arrangements. They voted 75 per cent in favour of change. Consultation closes at 5pm on June 18.

■ PINK SHIRT DAY

Serious message behind the fun By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

As the lunch bell rang yesterday afternoon Mount Hutt College students dived into a veritable feast of all things pink: from nail painting to pink pancakes to water pong with pink cups. The college was among a number of local schools and organisations celebrating Pink Shirt Day yesterday as part of National Bullying-Free Week. The activities were organised by the college’s Student Welfare Committee and Peer Support Group, who put the proceeds of their pink pancake sales towards the Bullying Prevention Advisory Group (BPAG) said Youth Mentor Wendy Keepa. She said the college had celebrated the event in the past, but this was the biggest and busiest Pink Shirt Day yet. “It’s just about having a bit of fun,” she said. Mayfield School, Borough School and Base youth were also among those partaking, donning pinks shirts and spreading kindness like confetti. The annual event, organised by the BPAG and the Mental Health Foun-

dation, sees schools running classroom activities to get students talking about bullying, and reviewing their anti-bullying policies. This year’s theme is Let’s Talk About It, acknowledging that children and young people can find it difficult to open up to adults about bullying. “Bullying can have serious and ongoing impacts on our mental health and wellbeing. We know that people who are bullied are more likely to experience symptoms of depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts and avoid going to school,” Mental Health Foundation Chief Executive Shaun Robinson said. “Pink Shirt Day is a reminder that small actions lead to larger actions that create positive change where we live, work and play.” Over 1000 schools and 850 workplaces signed up to take part around the country – more than double the number that got involved last year. Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two teenagers took a stand against homophobic bullying, mobilising their whole school, after a fellow student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

■ CHRISTCHURCH

Quake claimant spared jail term NEW TO THE MARKET DUE TO A COLLAPSED SALE VILLA 74 - $530,000 This luxurious 164sqm three bedroom villa, has two bathrooms, heated towel rails, emergency nurse call system, smoke detector, tv connections in master bedroom and living areas, phone connections in bedrooms and living areas, front door viewer and door bell, automatic garage door, laundry tub, a clothes line, heat pump, HRV System, sunny patio and deck and a double garage.

A quick scramble to find $7000 and the promise to swing another $8000 has spared a quake claimant who vandalised Earthquake Commission cars a stint in jail. Semi-retired Christchurch painter and decorator Russell Taylor Carr, 57, was told by a disgruntled judge yesterday that he would’ve been jailed unless he coughed up some cash. Carr was found guilty of intentional damage after a judge-alone trial earlier this year. He had admitted being in dispute with the much-maligned Crown entity for more than two years over a quake-damaged property but vehemently denied the vandalism allegations. Carr was due to be sentenced at 9.30am yesterday before Judge Stephen O’Driscoll at Christchurch District Court who wanted to know what Carr’s plan for reparation was. Defence counsel Nikita Mitskevitch said the amount sought to cover the damages, and not including the cost of testing the liquid used in the acid attack, was more than $14,000. The lawyer said that Carr was semi-retired but did do some work and if the judge imposed reparation, he could make an arrangement to repay some money. But O’Driscoll wasn’t having it. The judge noted that Carr had planned an overseas trip and was selling a property. If he failed to make some “meaningful” reparation payments, he faced jail. The judge stood the matter down until 2.15pm so Carr could decide whether he could come up with some reparation. “Bring a bag if there’s no reparation being offered,” the judge warned him. When the case recalled at 2.15pm, Carr told the court he could pay $7000 up front. But he asked for some more time to pay the remainder. Judge O’Driscoll agreed to defer sentence until June 11 for Carr to come up with the remaining $8000. - NZME

In brief Correction A story which appeared in Friday’s edition of the Guardian pertaining to the resignation of former lawyer, Kurt Reed referenced the organisation, AWF. This reference was made in relation to the AWF Auckland Construction and Technical and not Ashburton based law firm, Argyle Welsh Finnigan. The Guardian apologises for any confusion made by this omission of detail.

Back to business Former Christchurch property developer David Henderson, twice bankrupted for his forays into property development, has won the right to re-engage with the sector, but only as a selfemployed consultant providing services to the construction, land development and hospitality industries. Associate Judge Rob Osborne, the judge who granted Henderson his conditional discharge from bankruptcy in January 2017, yesterday partly approved Henderson’s application for permission to trade as an unincorporated sole trader subject to a series of conditions. - NZME

Rammings on the rise Criminals have rammed police cars on nine occassions this year in what the Police Association fears is a growing trend. The latest incident took place in Taupo on Wednesday night when a patrol car was rammed just before midnight by a fleeing driver in a stolen SUV. The two injured officers restarted their damaged car in order to leave the scene and wait for back-up but were followed by the offender. He was later tracked down and arrested. - NZME

■ SHOW REVIEW

Dancing Queens score top marks ABBA Gold was the first CD I ever purchased, and anyone who butchers its smash-hit singalongs instantly becomes my sworn enemy. So it’s with utter relief I can confirm nobody in the Ashburton Variety Theatre has done anything less than a stellar job of bringing the Mamma Mia! musical to life. Dozens of local super troupers have poured their wee hearts and souls into this tenth anniversary celebration of the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, assembling a show which is about a million times preferable to watching the movie, in a sun-drenched Grecian setting about a million times more preferable than the glacial Ashburton streets. Just like a piece of silver Lycra around a thigh, the joy of this show stretches far and wide. There’s something to tickle the fancy of the Dancing Queen within each of us. For me, the wow-factor began with the set, produced by the New Zealand Mamma Mia! Consortium. I won’t give much away but Bloody Nora, I’d be surprised if the O’Reilly Auditorium hasn’t looked better in all its 10 years. Then came Act 1 of the romantic comedy and along grooved an array of impeccably casted characters. In the role of 20-year-old Sophie is the fresh and energetic Miriam von Voorthuizen, self-proclaimed long lost twin of Amanda Seyfried (She’s not wrong. It’s uncanny). Heather McFarlane hits her stride as Sophie’s always freespirited yet sometimes dishevelled Donna, and Kate Galbraith (Tanya) and Cherie Livingstone (Rosie) win chuckles with their exDynamos antics. Also working together harmoniously and hilariously on stage as Sophie’s three potential baby daddies are Chris Woods (metropolitan Harry), Aaron Boyce (dark horse Sam) and the absolutely brilliant Brent Gray (Birkenstock wearing, rucksack toting Aussie bloke Bill). Luke Glendining slips into character as Sophie’s fiancé Sky with

skill and ease, and a vigorous nod of approval goes to the four youths who adeptly portrayed the young couple’s friends – Pepper, Eddie, Lisa and Ali.

The audience are kept as firmly hooked on the action as a small silver fish clinging to Rosie’s fishing line.

The show maintained momentum right through both acts, and I’m not just talking about Bill (Brent Gray) gracelessly hurtling through a line of wedding guest chairs.

floating above her bed and being pestered by green alien organisms in Under Attack, all musical numbers are accompanied by a flashy visual feast of activity. Not that any distraction is needed from the singing, as I failed to hear a vocal chord out of line. And then there’s the music itself. From a nook below the stage and behind a wooden pier, live backing tracks issue from an eight-piece band led by musical director Richard Marrett. My only grumble would be that this band were tucked just out of sight from my chosen third-row seat – as the tunes were so polished it became easy to forget they were floating to my ears from real, Ashburton musicians and backing singers rather than any pre-recorded soundtrack. ■ TRANZ-ALPINE SCOOTER SAFARI

Hard yards on road all for a good cause BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Take one scooter, two men and hundreds of kilometres of road and you have a team on a mission to raise funds for the Cancer Society. This morning while most of the Ashburton District was still tucked up in bed Trevor Croy and son Gareth were on the road heading for Hokitika as part of a 250-strong contingent of scooters slogging up and down steep hills on their way to the West Coast. The Tranz-Alpine Scooter Safari is held biennially as a major fundraiser for the organisation’s Canterbury branch and every time it’s a sell-out with willing participants lining up to take part. The event started in 2009 to support a young man with bowel cancer. It started small and snowballed. It’s not for the faint hearted and that’s the way it was designed – cancer sufferers experience huge discomfort and

the event organisers wanted safari participants to do the same. The race is designed to be a cold, long, hard, gruelling and uncomfortable test of endurance. For Team Croy, that’s a bunch of sacrifices they’re prepared to make to raise money for a cause dear to their hearts. Trevor’s original plan was to do up an old scooter to make the trip. Friend Bryan Donaldson told him he would be mad to consider making the journey on anything less than reliable and came up with a luxurious alternative. As they alternate legs of the eight hour journey Team Croy will be riding a 50cc Yamaha and they’ll be kitted out in the warmest of clothing from the McKay and Donaldson shop shelves. The pair are safari ‘virgins’ Trevor said and while the original idea was his, Gareth was keen to cross the Tasman to join his dad. Before they hit the road today the pair have had to brush up on their scooter skills. Trevor reck-

ons it’s 40 years since he’s been on the road on two wheels and Gareth says it’s 18 years for him. Dad’s nabbed the initial honour lap around Ruapuna race track and he’ll be the one to slog up Porters Pass, but Gareth will have the glory of riding into Hokitika. Number one goal is to make it to Sheffield for a pie. The bikes will travel in waves of 50, in single file with mechanics and breakdown trucks bringing up the rear. They’ve checked the weather forecast. It looks grim, but they know the ride is on regardless. “It’s only cancelled if the road is closed,” Trevor said. To date the pair have raised $1200 for the cause, with the all up tally for the ride currently sitting at $280,000. Wives Linda and Lisa will be the support crew, driving the truck, towing the trailer (the pair won’t be riding back home) and carrying warm clothing and warming refreshments.

■ ASHBURTON WEDDING

Marrying same day as royals ‘a good sign’ By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton mum Georgina White did not know until one week ago that her wedding date was to clash with that of royalty. But the 25-year-old is taking the coincidence as a good sign, and believes it may even have something to do with destiny. White and partner Adam Lush, 26, are to marry at the Tinwald Memorial Hall today at 2pm, and a reception will follow at the venue. The pair say destiny played a big part in their choice of the wedding date in the first place. White explained that 10 years ago she and Lush were in a serious car crash. However, they both survived, and because it was on the eighth day of the eighth month in 2008, eight had been their lucky number ever since. Their survival was particularly poignant, considering White had previously lost her brother Dean in a car crash. “I could have died but I survived it, it was like it was meant to be. I’m still here for a reason, I have still got things to do,” she said. The number eight in numerology represented infinity, and by working on this number and taking into account a numerology process for days, months and years, they arrived at May 19 as the date they should marry. White said while she had only just heard about the clash with the royal wedding, she believed it would prove to be just one more happy event in what had been a beautiful love story for herself and Lush. The couple had been childhood sweethearts, and at the age of 10 White had said to her younger brother Adam she would marry Lush one day. After four-and-a-half years of being together in their teens, the pair later separated, but fate once again intervened and they got back together about a year ago. They are now not only planning their wedding, but expecting the arrival of their

There was “no rhyme or reason” as to why anyone would commit the crime, he said. “It’s a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers, so I am baffled as to why someone would do such a thing. “The place was finger-printed but nothing has come to light. son in four months. White’s mother Diana Innes likes to keep up with the royals, and admits she will be glancing at her phone at the reception to see Prince Harry and Meghan Markle get married. However, nothing would compete with her daughter’s wedding, which she, like her daughter, believed was just meant to be. Innes recalled Lush’s mother Naomi saying to her before passing away that she wanted her to look after her boy, and that he should one day marry White. And she believed numerology may have played its part in not only her daughter’s choice of wedding date, but the royals as well. “It does put them in good stead, there’s no way it’s not going to be beneficial for these two getting married on the same day as the royals,” Innes said.

Hatchery hit by vandals, dozens of fish killed The Dunedin Community Salmon hatchery in Sawyers Bay has suffered another break-in where its aerators were switched off, killing tens of thousands of dollars worth of fish. Acting Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson, of Dunedin, said the alleged attack happened overnight on Saturday. An estimated $20,000 worth of salmon had been lost, he said. In January, the hatchery was broken into and the aerators switched off, killing about 200 salmon worth $30,000. Police were still investigating the first incident and had made no arrests. When you make change through education, you make change for the future and that’s been the experience of Ashburton midwife Julie Dockrill who is part of a team of Kiwis making a huge difference in the lives of mothers and babies in Mongolia. As she prepares to return to the vast country, she talks to reporter Sue Newman about the programme that has now become part of that country’s health education.

housands of Mongolian mothers and babies have a better chance for a healthy future thanks to the work of a small group of New Zealand midwives. Among those midwives is Ashburton’s Julie Dockrill who on Friday made her third trip to Mongolia to complete a training project that has, and will continue to, change lives. In simple terms the small Kiwi vocational training team delivered education at three medical centres across the country, but its lasting legacy is much greater – the development of childbirth education manuals they will regularly update, ensuring modern-day childbirth practices continue well into the future. Julie’s involvement was almost accidental. “It was a Timaru Rotary project and they wanted to know if there was anyone local with the skills to teach education in Mongolia,” she said. Her name was put forward, she had a casual chat and wasn’t sure whether a stint in Mongolia was for her, but she was offered the position and decided, why not? “I never envisaged I’d be doing this in my life. It’s been hugely rewarding and you just have to take these opportunities when they arrive. It’s been the most amazing experience and I’ve been very privileged to be part of a great team that has worked together really well,” she said. Julie knew very little about Mongolia and had no idea what to expect, but said every step of the way the work has been made easier by having Timaru Rotarian Gary Dennison on board as logistics expert. For the group, setting out to break new ground in the Mongolian health sector meant working, travelling and living together for three weeks, often in quite basic circumstances. The work was challenging, teaching a new curriculum that required translation to people who were unaccustomed to western-style learning that involved discussion, participation and input. “People in the health profession had had no upskilling for 15 years. We got consultants, doctors, new graduate nurses to pitch our education at and they

kept telling us that this was a different way to learn,” Julie said. They taught, explained and discussed and their students took that knowledge on board. “We never envisaged it would make such a change so quickly.

We thought we’d have change at ground level, but we managed to have change at government level and that’s huge,” she said. The manuals have been endorsed and adopted by the Mongolian Ministry of Health as the

Left – While some of Julie Dockrill’s time in Mongolia was spent in cities, she also worked with mothers and babies in rural areas and that meant living in Bedouin accommodation, in a Ger settlement.

The key to that, Julie said, was doing what had previously been impossible, getting the health department and the education department at the same table. What probably also made a difference was knowing that as much as childbirth education saved lives, it also saved money, she said. Yes, it’s been a lot of work, Julie said, but the single biggest thing the group was proudest of was that the change they had made was sustainable because it involved manuals that reinforced the new practices. The group made its first trip to

Mongolia in 2013 and following a second training visit they were able to see their results in statistics – between 2013 and 2015 infant mortality rates dropped 66 per cent and maternal deaths dived more than 70 per cent. Over a three-week period they worked with more than 300 maternal healthcare workers. The work has been carried out in both cities and in rural clinics where teaching resources have been given to staff and flyers prepared to give to pregnant women. Their work has not been delivering babies, it has been all about educating midwives. Some travelled several days to take part in training sessions.

The team also delivers equipment to rural clinics, Julie’s last two stints in Mongolia have taken her to the capital city Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan, in the north and Sainshand near the Chinese border. After the first trip a midwife from Mongolia was chosen to come to New Zealand to spend a month experiencing the New Zealand healthcare system. This time the team is small, just Julie, an Australian midwife and a logistics expert and they will swap Sainshand for Alti, in the middle of the Gobi Desert. “We’re really, really committed to this, but we know in our hearts that this will be our last

trip to Mongolia, our job is done. It’s all set up and our job now will be working to update their information. We feel settled in our hearts that we’ve made a difference, much more than we thought.” The work has been “insanely” rewarding, but personal rewards were never the objective, that was about achieving an outcome that would bring about sustainable change. And that’s been achieved, she said. She puts some of the project’s success down to good planning – identifying what was there, what was needed, what was possible and what was actually do-able. “Yes it’s been a lot of work,

but when you have a passion it doesn’t feel like you’re doing something that’s out of the ordinary.” While the Kiwi team has helped set new standards in maternal and infant care, the birthing experience for Mongolian women is still very basic. Delivery rooms contain several beds and no-one other than a midwife is allowed to be with a woman in labour. The role of the family is to ensure the woman has everything she will need from toilet paper and sheets to food. Hospitals simply provide a bed and basic care. A stigma is still attached to a child who is less than “perfect”, Julie said, and mothers will walk away and leave a child they do not want. “What we’re doing is also about empowering women so they know what’s right, because they don’t deal well with disability or sick children. They sometimes leave them at the hospital and they never return.” And there are orphanages and underground “cities” where orphans live. These youngsters are often targeted for body parts. The group also worked to empower women to know and do what was right for themselves and their children, to understand they did not have to tolerate abuse and violence, Julie said. “They’re lovely, warm, friendly people who want what we all want, the best for our children.” For everyone who was involved in the education the experience had been very humbling, she said. “We have a passion for antenatal education because we recognise it delivers healthy babies and better outcomes and when you have a passion, you don’t feel you’re doing something out of the ordinary. “We’ve had some amazing results, results we never anticipated. We’re changing attitudes and the important thing is that our programme is sustainable.” While the team delivered the programme, none of that would have been possible without the support of both Rotary and Ashburton Hospital, Julie said.

■ CHELSEA VIEW ESTATE TRUST

Property developer owes millions Vlasic’s attention is now focused on the mortgagee sale of the 8 Huka Road property, which is currently listed on Trade Me. Viewings of the property started on Thursday afternoon and will run through to Tuesday May 22. While the properties should recover some of the money owed, Vlasic said creditors would still be left out of pocket after the sale. This latest financial trouble follows on from Kelly’s prior business venutre, Volcanic Investments, which went into liquidation, following a string of failed property developments in upmarket Auckland suburbs. His personal debts at the time amounted to more than $28m. Thereafter, Kelly went on to start the Chelsea View Estate Trust, which has now gone into liquidation. Cameron Partners to assist with this process,” the company said. “No decisions have been made and it remains business as usual at Hellers. We will not make any further comment until the review is complete.” Wellington investment firm Rangatira increased its stake in Hellers to 63 per cent from 50 per cent in late 2015, paying $9.5m for the extra shares, and valuing the

investment at $52.2m at the time. In the June 2017 year, Rangatira recognised a $36.3m revaluation gain on the Hellers stake after the meat company acquired Gramart Foods. The investment firm didn’t split out the value of its Hellers take in the 2017 annual report, although it recognised the value of the meat firm’s goodwill at $27.7m as at June 30. - NZME

ogy has become. Usually, I don’t let things bother me but what bothers me more than anything in the world is when technology goes bad. Because it ends up being on people like me, for creating something that turned out to not to be good and pure,” he said. “I always want to put the human before the technology. In a company like Apple that made computers easy to use, I always thought that the user was more important than the technology,” he told the audience. But in the age of big data, tech companies like Google and Facebook have turned the humans

that use their products into the fodder that powers their online advertising machines – and it’s costing us our privacy. “We put a lot of effort into letting people live their lives in a normal, human way. But that human way is changing,” Mr Wozniak lamented. “We used to be able to have conversations in secret with people. If I were to say something to you in private now, others wouldn’t hear it – that isn’t the case anymore. We lost our security a long time ago. We’ve lost our privacy and it’s been abused.” - NZME

A housing development on Auckland’s North Shore has left creditors millions of dollars out of pocket. Chelsea View Estate Trust initially planned to build a series of terraced houses on the site, but the project has fallen into financial trouble. According to the Companies Office, liquidators Rodgers Reidy were appointed to the company on May 3. Stephen Robert Kelly, the sole director listed with Chelsea View Trust, was declared bankrupt late last year. Liquidator Paul Vlasic told the Herald this was not the first time Kelly had been declared bankrupt. Vlasic said it was still too early to go into specifics but that the financial trouble stemmed from a dispute with a builder. Vlasic confirmed that primary lender Natwest Finance was owed millions of dollars and that one contractor was owed $800,000.

OUR VIEW

New council CEO has big shoes to fill O

nce you got past the comical responses about Ashburton getting a covered stadium before Christchurch and the Crusaders’ home base becoming the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds, the news of Hamish Riach’s move to the chief executive chair of the Ashburton District Council was quite serious. Here’s a man with a world of experience behind him, a man who is internationally acclaimed for his business acumen, a man who some of the most powerful heads in world sport have nothing but respect for. And he’s coming to hold one of the most important positions in Ashburton. I’ve been lucky enough to have dealt with Hamish in various

roles over the years, but largely in his role at the helm of the Crusaders. Through that time the spotlight has been firmly on him by the entire world with incidents like the Zac Guildford saga. He handled himself with real skill and endeared himself to the public with the manner in which he treated such a sensitive subject. There’s no doubt that Riach has a job in front of him when he gets to Ashburton, but he has the ma-

jor bonus of a very experienced and skilled management team around him who will no doubt be bending over backwards to ensure the transition is a smooth one. Most pleasing is that Riach seems keen to envelop himself in the Ashburton District by living here and not travelling from Christchurch or Rolleston like a lot of people in high-powered positions do. In order to help guide a district, one must be a part of it. There’s no point in living Christchurch and making big decisions that impact on Auckland and, similarly, Christchurch and Ashburton. That alone should give the people of Mid Canterbury the confidence that the right decision has been made for the better-

ment of our district – and now it’s up to Riach to do his bit. But, what about Andrew Dalziel? In his five years at the helm of the Ashburton District Council, he’s made a big impression. With a calm nature and level head in times of conflict, Dalziel has handled himself with real pride and passion in the job he’s undertaken for half a decade and his loss from the Ashburton District will be another district’s gain for sure with his experience a much-needed commodity around New Zealand. It’s hard not to feel sorry for him though. By electing not to roll his contract over for the next two years, instead heading to the market – Dalziel was left exposed to losing his job.

But in the hype of a big-ticket result in Riach, it is important we don’t forget or understate the job Dalziel has done here. Although largely behind closed doors, he’s been a strong advocate for the people and has done himself proud in the job. His will be big shoes to fill. Big shoes. But maybe we have the right person, with the right skills and right kind of respect around the country to lift the Ashburton District to a new level through driving his council staff team hard to get better results for all of us. And who knows, maybe that covered stadium might be a good option, then the possibility of the Crusaders playing here in the future would be even brighter than ever. A win-win for everyone.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Saturday, May 19, the 139th day of 2018. There are 226 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On May 19, 1943, in his second wartime address to the US Congress, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill pledged his country’s full support in the fight against Japan; that evening, Churchill met with President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House, where the two leaders agreed on May 1, 1944 as the date for the D-Day invasion of France (the operation ended up being launched more than a month later). On this date: In 1536, Anne Boleyn, the second wife of England’s King Henry VIII, was beheaded after being convicted of adultery. In 1649, England was declared a republic by Parliament following the execution of King Charles I. (The monarchy was restored in 1660.) In 1780, a mysterious darkness enveloped much of New England and part of Canada in the early afternoon. In 1913, California Gov. Hiram Johnson signed the WebbHartley Law prohibiting “aliens ineligible to citizenship” from owning farmland, a measure targeting Asian immigrants, particularly Japanese. In 1927, the silent movie Wings, a World War One drama starring Clara Bow, Charles “Buddy” Rogers and Richard Arlen, had its world premiere in San Antonio, Texas, where it was filmed. (Wings went on to win the first Academy Award for best picture.) In 1935, T. E. Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia, died in Dorset, England, six days after being injured in a motorcycle crash. Peter Livingstone OUT OF SCHOOL

T

he Ashburton Trust Event Centre is infested and noone is doing a damn thing about it! I believe the manager, Roger Farr, should be held accountable for the current situation and I challenge him publicly to explain how it has got to this point. I don’t make that statement lightly, but as ratepayers you should know about this crisis that I believe is being purposely swept under the red carpet. What makes the situation more alarming is this is the 10th anniversary of the building and the event centre, along with Variety Theatre Ashburton, have been actively promoting through the Guardian, what is undoubtedly the hottest, musthave ticket in town – Mamma Mia! Now I’m not talking about the well-known poxy plague of podgy pigeons placidly pooping on the parapets of the building. I have direct and exclusive insider knowledge of three bizarre infestations that I cannot believe someone has not spoken out about. I suspect that the event centre staff are aware and have been blinded by the disco ball spinning in the auditorium, and cannot speak the truth. When you go to Mamma Mia! you will not see this infestation, so I will point them out to you now and you can decide if you need to raise this with your local councillor. Starting with the bowels of the building there is, under the stage, a cluster of Dungeon Divas. I have researched this group on Facegram and Instabook and discovered they are highly intelligent beings with extreme musical skills. Dungeon Divas have an incredible ability to create and perform three and four-part harmonies. While the applause inducing stars wow you with their passionate portrayals of the Mamma Mia! characters, below them the divas belt out backing vocal after backing vocal.

Are the cast members on stage aware of the infestation of Dungeon Divas, Cave Trolls and Roof Rats? PHOTO KATIE TODD 180518-KT-019 A sub-group of divas make up the live band that effortlessly smashes out the top ABBA hits with infinite energy. Above the divas, and on the side of the stage, are the Cave Trolls. The largest group is on the left-hand side of the stage from an audience’s point of view. These netherworld-bred creatures delight in pulling long ropes to make pieces of the stage set fly up and down. At one point Sophie, the lead character getting married, has a nightmare and I know it has the hand of the Cave Trolls all over this scene. These Cave Trolls also think it is amusing to rearrange the set every now and then, so that the cast have to adjust to the new positions and carry on with the show. And carry on with the show they do, in the most breath-taking manner. The leads are a rock solid combination of vocal mastery, beauty and bit of buff. The ensemble that supports them are choreographed with surgical precision and sizzle on stage, especially in hypnotic numbers like Voulez Vous. I bet the Cave Trolls laugh as much as you as an audience do, when Bumbling Bill creates a mess of the wedding chairs

while being chased by Randy Rosie. I don’t know what to say about these two as both of them are teachers and should know better. I suspect that Roger does not want this infestation known because of his central role as director, manager and lighting designer. While I have to acknowledge his sheer determination and tenacity to pull off such a big show piece for the 10th anniversary, I am not swayed from my mission to uncover the darker side of this building. So I have saved revealing the third infestation until now. If you are not sitting down with a strong chai latte, then I encourage you to do so. When you come in and take your seat for this foot-stomping, hand-clapping, sing-your-heart-out show, Do. Not. Look. Up! No I mean it, do NOT look up, for high above you scurry Roof Rats! These are truly the most terrifying of all of the creatures that infest the event centre. I know from an extremely trustworthy source, that these rats are as big as grown men. There are only three of them and you won’t see them 99 per cent of the time as they scurry about

and spotlight the action on the stage far below. Now here is the evidence that the staff at ATEC know about them; they have nicknames for this terrifying trio. They are called Papa Whiskey, Peanut and Diabetes! Not only that, the staff have given them chairs to sit on, to make them comfortable and as a way of encouraging them to stay up there and not come down. Speaking of nicknames, you should be aware that the puppet master who calls all the cues once the show starts is known as Mother Hen, and her upcoming protégé is called Rubber Duck. So, either I am completely wrong (which has never happened) and this has been a shameless promotion of the greatest show on in town, or there are some serious issues going on at the event centre. I will let you the ABBA-loving fan decide. This is Papa Whiskey signing out. Over. Peter Livingstone is the principal of Tinwald School. Mercury biopic criticised

People watch as ash rises from the summit crater of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii.

Bohemian Rhapsody, the forthcoming Freddie Mercury biopic, has been criticised for apparently downplaying his bisexuality, relationships with men, and even his death from Aids. Bryan Fuller slammed the company behind the Bohemian Rhapsody for being vague about the Queen singer’s death in promotional materials. He tweeted: “DEAR 20TH CENTURY FOX ... Yes, it was a life-threatening illness, but more specifically it was Aids. From having gay sex with men. Do better.” The trailer for the film features Mercury’s partner Mary Austin prominently, but only appears to show his interest in men in a blink-andyou’ll-miss-it shot.

Kilauea spews ash A volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted anew with little sound and only modest fury, spewing a steely gray plume of ash about 9100 metres into the sky that began raining down on a nearby town. The explosion at the summit of Kilauea came after two weeks of volcanic activity that sent lava flows into neighbourhoods and destroyed at least 26 homes. Scientists said the eruption was the most powerful in recent days, though it probably lasted only a few minutes. Geologists have warned that the volcano could become even more violent, with increasing ash production and the potential that future blasts could hurl boulders the size of cows from the summit. Toby Hazel, who lives in Pa-

hoa, near the mountain, said she heard “a lot of booming sounds.” Those came after days of earthquakes. “It’s just time to go – it really, really is,” she said, preparing to leave town. “I feel so sorry for the people who don’t go, because they don’t have the money, or don’t want to go to a shelter and leave their houses.” Some people in the community closest to the volcano slept through the blast, said Kanani Aton, a spokeswoman for Hawaii County Civil Defence, who spoke to relatives and friends in the town called Volcano. At least one person who was awake heard nothing. Epic Lava tour operator John Tarson is an early riser and only learned about the eruption

after receiving an alert on his phone. The plume, a towering column of ash reaching into a hazy sky, looked different than others he’s witnessed, because of its sheer height. “What I noticed is the plume was just rising straight into the air, and it was not tipping in any direction,” he said. “We’ve been expecting this, and a lot of people are going to see it and get excited and scared.” Residents as far away as Hilo, about 30 miles from Kilauea, were starting to notice the volcano’s effects. Pua’ena Ahn, who lives in Hilo, complained about having laboured breathing, itchy, watery eyes and some skin irritation from airborne ash. The National Weather Service issued an ash advisory and then extended it, and

county officials distributed ash masks to area residents. Several schools closed because of the risk of elevated levels of sulfur dioxide, a volcanic gas. The immediate health risk comes from ash particles in the air, said Dr. Josh Green, a state senator. Anyone with respiratory difficulties, such as asthma or emphysema, should limit exposure to the ash, Green said. “People need to stay inside until the winds shift and the ash has settled,” he said. The Federal Aviation Administration extended a restriction on aircraft from entering the airspace up to 9100 metres above Kilauea’s summit. The earlier limit was up to 3000 metres. The prohibition applies to an eight kilometre radius around the crater. - AP

The Hits host told listeners she’d been the target of many trolls over the past few years, and she’d had enough. Kane used Pink Shirt Day’s antibullying message to share wise words for her bullies and anyone else who had nothing nice to say. “The abuse and nasty comments can be relentless but luckily I have developed some pretty thick skin over the years and it now doesn’t worry me,” she said.

School bus torn apart in collision, killing 2 A school bus taking children on a field trip to a historic site collided with a dump truck yesterday, ripping the bus apart and killing a student and a teacher. The crash left the bus lying on its side on the guardrail of Interstate 80 in Mount Olive, its undercarriage and front end sheared off and its steering wheel exposed. Some of the victims crawled out of the emergency exit in the back and an escape hatch on the roof. More than 40 people were taken to hospitals. Fifth-grade student Theo Ancevski, who was sitting in the fourth row of the bus and was treated at a hospital for cuts and scrapes, said he

The front end of the red dump truck was mangled in the wreck, which took place about 80 kilometres west of New York. The truck was registered to Mendez Trucking, of Belleville, and had “In God We Trust” emblazoned on the back of it. The bus had entered westbound Interstate 80 from southbound US Highway 206, police said. Cleanup crews loaded its wreckage onto a flat-bed truck as they cleared the roadway. - AP

Houston molested? Friends of Whitney Houston allege the singer was molested as a child by her cousin Dee Dee Warwick in a documentary that premiered this week at the Cannes Film Festival. Houston’s longtime assistant Mary Jones told filmmaker Kevin Macdonald that the late singer told her that Warwick, the sister of Dionne Warwick, molested her at a young age. Houston’s brother Gary Garland-Houston also says he was molested between the ages of 7 and 9 by a female family member, and says his sister was abused too. Dee Dee Warwick died in 2008.

Ebola spreads; reaches city Congo’s ebola outbreak has spread to a crossroads city of more than one million people in a troubling turn that marks the first time the vast, impoverished country has encountered the lethal virus in an urban area. “This is a major, major gamechanger in the outbreak,” Dr Peter Salama, the World Health Organisation’s deputy directorgeneral of emergency preparedness and response, warned yesterday. A single case of ebola was confirmed in Mbandaka, a densely populated provincial capital on the Congo River, Congo’s Health Minister Oly Ilunga said. The city is about 150 kilometres from Bikoro, the rural area where the outbreak was announced last week. Yesterday Congo’s Ministry of Health announced 11 new confirmed ebola cases and two deaths tied to cases in the country’s northwest, including one in a suburb of Mbandaka. A total of 45 cases of ebola have now been reported in Congo in this outbreak: 14 confirmed, 21 probable and 10 suspected, the ministry said, after results from lab tests returned yesterday. There has been one new death in Bikoro, where the first death took place. That new death had epidemiological ties to another case. The other death was a sus-

Only one of the 25 dead has been confirmed as ebola, it said, adding that no new health professionals have been contaminated. One nurse had died, and

three others were among suspected cases since the outbreak began. Medical teams have been rushing to track down anyone thought to have had contact with infected people, while WHO is shipping thousands of doses of an experimental vaccine. Until now, the outbreak was confined to remote rural areas, where

ebola, which is spread by bodily fluids, travels more slowly. “We’re certainly not trying to cause any panic in the national or international community,” Salama said. But “urban ebola can result in an exponential increase in cases in a way that rural ebola struggles to do.” - AP

Markle’s dad too ill for wedding but mum has tea with royals

Luxury bags, cash seized from ex-PM

Ending days of speculation, Meghan Markle said yesterday that her father will not be able to attend her wedding to Prince Harry due to health problems. The news came as British military personnel rehearsed for a gala procession through Windsor that will follow today’s ceremony, which will be televised live around the world. “Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding,” Markle said in a statement. “I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.” Markle also thanked “everyone who has offered generous messages of support” and said she and Harry are looking forward to “sharing our special day with you on Saturday”. Kensington Palace has not revealed any details about Thomas Markle’s health issues, but the celebrity website TMZ says the 73-year-old is hospitalised after undergoing a procedure to clear blocked coronary arteries. Thomas Markle had been scheduled to walk his daughter down the aisle when she weds her prince today in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Malaysian police have confiscated 284 designer handbags and 72 suitcases containing cash, jewellery and other valuables as part of a corruption and money-laundering investigation into former Prime Minister Najib Razak. Commercial crime chief Amar Singh says the valuables were seized late Thursday from apartments linked to Najib at an upscale condominium in Kuala Lumpur. Singh said yesterday the seizure was part of investigations into a corruption scandal at the 1MDB state fund that is also being probed by the US and other countries. US investigators say Najib’s associates stole $4.5 billion from the fund. Police have also searched other properties linked to Najib. Sport WILD CARDS BY ERIN TASKER

ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

When James Cochrane and his New Zealand beach handball team-mates returned home from playing Australia earlier this year, they thought their season was done. But a phone call just a couple of weeks ago had them digging their gear back out again. That phone call to the New Zealand Handball Federation was from the International Handball Federation, offering the New Zealand men a wildcard spot at the world championships. Cochrane, who originated from Ashburton but now lived in Wellington, said the tournament was an opportunity just too good to turn down for the development of New Zealand’s players, the exposure it would give them on the world stage, and the future of the

sport in New Zealand. So they took it. The only problem was, the world championships were scheduled to be held in Russia in July, so they only had a few weeks to get themselves ready, and most importantly, find the money needed to get themselves over there. So they began hunting out sponsors, selling merchandise and started up a Givealittle page, while also getting back out onto the sand to work on their game ahead of their first ever appearance at the world championships. Beach handball was a fast and explosive, high-intensity game, played on a smaller court than its indoor equivalent, Cochrane said. Games were also shorter than in traditional handball, with two 10 minute halves, and only four players on the pitch at one time. The team hadn’t played to-

gether since February, and had thought their season was done, so they had a lot of work to do in a short space of time to prepare for the biggest challenge of their playing careers. “I think the fitness is still there for the boys because we were getting back into the indoor season. “It’s just a matter of getting game-ready,” Cochrane said. With the Wellington indoor venue having trucked-in sand they’d been using for training now having closed down, it meant heading outdoors to train. “Unfortunately, we are going to have to brave it out in the cold and the wind and the rain in Wellington and we’ll have to get creative with our training,” Cochrane said. Three members of the beach team, including Cochrane, were also members of the New Zealand men’s indoor handball side which

travelled to Korea earlier this year to compete at the Asian Championships for the first time ever. Just a few weeks later the beach handball side headed to Australia for two tests against Australia, which the side captained by Cochrane lost, but every year they were getting closer to their oldest rivals, he said. Those wins booked Australia the sole Oceania spot at the world championships, but with no African nations attending this year two wildcard spots became available. They were offered to Denmark and New Zealand. The tournament was being held just after Russia finished hosting the FIFA Football World Cup, from July 24-29. The city hosting the tournament was landlocked, meaning sand would be trucked in to the

venue which was also used for other sports like beach volleyball. Sixteen teams would take part in the tournament, and the draw was live-streamed this week, with New Zealand finding themselves in a pool with Spain, Hungary and Vietnam. Croatia would head into the tournament as defending champions, while the two really dominant sides in recent years had been Brazil and Qatar, Cochrane said. New Zealand’s main aim was to ruffle some feathers. “I feel like we will be able to compete with some of these sides and turn some heads,” Cochrane said. Before heading to Russia, the team would head to Serbia for a training camp and warm up games against the Serbian national team and some local teams.

Celtic A failed to win a quarter for the first time in Mid Canterbury Netball’s 2018 ACL premier one netball competition on Thursday night, but still recovered to finish round one unbeaten. Celtic A were held to an 8-all draw in the first quarter of their match against Hampstead A at the EA Networks Centre, before turning the screws on defence in the second quarter and shooting out to a 19-11 lead at half-time, which they’d extended to 38-17 by full time. Celtic A coach Angela Leadley said it was pleasing to finish the round with a win, after getting off to a slow start. She said her side knew at quarter-time they were capable of better. “We just really lifted our intensity on defence and found our footing,” Leadley said. While Celtic A were continuing their winning ways, on the

next court the tightest match of the night was unfolding, with College A picking up just their second win of the competition in a thrilling finish with United A, 25-24. The young college side bounced back from a big 45-17 loss to Christchurch Girls’ High School in the first round of Canterbury secondary schools’ netball’s SuperNet competition on Wednesday night, to get out to a surprise four goal lead at the end of the first quarter. By half-time they’d extended their lead by one and were up 16-11 heading into the third quarter. But the tide turned in the third stanza, with United A clawing their way back into the match to tie things up at 17-all at three quarter time, setting up a tense final quarter. College A were the first to gain a slight advantage in that quarter, but with less than a minute to go the sides were level again at

24-all, before College A managed to slot the winning goal. College A coach Kaye Kennedy said her side had been working on their starts and it had paid off. “They did have a wake-up call at SuperNet so for them to come back to play so well, I’m pretty proud of them really,” Kennedy said. She said Hayley Tallentire and Dani McArthur were in top form in the shooting circle. “This was always going to be a development year for us because we’ve only got two in this team from last year and to see improvement every week is great,” Kennedy said. United A coach Claire Tappin described her side’s start as awful, but said they produced a fantastic third quarter to get back into the match. To lose so narrowly, was gutting. “Their composure certainly outclassed ours at the end,” Tappin said.

The final match of the first round of premier one saw Southern A go searching for their first and only win of the first round before being relegated to premier two, thanks to finishing bottom of the table. They took on last year’s runners-up Methven A, but struggled to keep up from the outset and eventually went down 34-21. With automatic promotion and relegation at the end of the first round, Southern A would now drop down to premier two, with the winners of premier two – the new Mt Somers side – set to make the step up to premier one. Mt Somers also finished the first round unbeaten, producing a 36-17 win over Ashburton College B on Thursday night. Other winners on the last night of the first round were Celtic B with a 45-21 win over Southern B, and Celtic C with a 41-26 win over Rakaia A. Round two will get under way this Thursday night.

Kane Williamson’s Indian Premier League batting and captaincy suggests the Sunrisers Hyderabad remain tournament favourites ahead of next week’s play-offs. Yes, they lost a thriller to the Royal Challengers Bangalore yesterday, coming up 14 runs short in what would have been an IPL record chase for 219. Williamson made 81 from 42 balls. Needing 20 off the final over, he was caught on the boundary by New Zealand team-mate Colin de Grandhomme. However, SRH top the round robin table on 18 points with only Chennai Super Kings capable of ousting them. The New Zealand captain’s statistical contribution has been eight scores of 50 or more from 13 innings, the most at the 2018 edition. His strike rate is 140. Only two knocks returned less than 29. Williamson’s performances are rivaling the Swiss Railway Timetable for consistency and speed. Opposition bowlers might want to preserve and ogle his third-ball duck, against Kings XI Punjab on April 26, as if it were a Faberge egg. The 27-year-old’s form prompted New Zealand coach Mike Hesson, moonlighting as a television analyst, to set a field around what looked like an old Test Match board game within a Mumbai studio. Hesson moved fielders about to show how Williamson exploits gaps. His solution to contain him? You need 12 men on the field. Williamson’s return on a $641,000 season’s investment has made him a blue-chip stock, especially given he spent tracts of past tournaments as a ring-in. This often left New Zealand fans bemused; now the world knows why. However, let’s not get obsessed by the glut of runs. More important has been Williamson’s captaincy and manmanagement after inheriting the role from Australian ball-tampering conspirator David Warner. His inclusive demeanour has proven the perfect medium for a team that could have unravelled when Warner stepped down. Williamson was a team man helping in the background before his elevation to the First XI this season. He will expect the same respect accorded to those who replaced him. Hence the unity among the rank and file. Williamson’s job is to get the best out of the players on the field. The question now is whether they can win the tournament on the back of the skipper’s contribution. Judging by their performances, they’re obvious contenders to do so. - NZME

Whistle blower

Mid Canterbury referee Kevin Opele has blown the whistle on thousands of games covering different codes and different sports. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

BY LINDA CLARKE

LINDA.C@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Mid Canterbury rugby referee Kevin Opele quietly celebrated a 150 senior match milestone recently. Opele, 40, has actually refereed double that number if you take into account games at tournaments and other levels. He also has 3000-plus touch rugby games under his belt, including more than 100 internationals, as well as 122 netball games. He has refereed four of the last five Watters Cup finals and was Mid Canterbury Rugby’s busiest referee last season. He was also named Official of the Year at the recent Mid Canterbury Sports Awards. This year he is dividing his time between senior rugby and netball, with no thoughts of putting the whistle away, despite the commitment needed to stay physically fit and abreast of all the rule changes across both sports. Opele started refereeing touch in 2001, officiating at national and international matches, then took up refereeing rugby league and rugby matches. It’s been by and large a rewarding experience, though twice he has needed a police escort to leave the field – the second time was a match where the players

and spectators had gang affiliations. “I do it for the enjoyment of being in the thick of it and seeing some pretty epic skills from amazing athletes, but it’s also a great sense of achievement knowing that you’ve contributed to making it a good game. “It is quite a lonely place sometimes as an official as you’re not

“The skills you see on TV or at rep level mean that the game is controlled differently. “We can’t impose the same rules here as players simply don’t have the skillset to do it.” Opele said verbal abuse came with the territory, though referees spent time talking with team leaders and coaches about rule interpretations and expected be-

in a team any more and you just have to accept that 50 per cent are going to love how you did and the other half will think you’re a right idiot who doesn’t know the rules or needs glasses. “I’ve been threatened to be killed during a game, so nothing really surprises me now with how much people get involved in the game.” He said he generally didn’t hear comments from spectators, but often they were around rules of the game that no longer existed. “So many people think we have favourites, but we don’t. We don’t care who wins or loses.

haviour. Good captains kept their players under control and kept their cool talking to match officials. “Good captains make good teams. “Eric Duff (Southern) would be the best captain in Mid Canterbury – he understands pressure and he knows when to talk.” Opele said there was more opportunity in rugby than netball to chat to players about their play to eliminate stoppages by the whistle. There was always banter with halfbacks, usually the most talkative players on the paddock.

His least favourite games are at youth level, where parents often had poor knowledge of the rules and shouted abuse at the referee. This only encouraged young people to think talking to a match official that way was okay. Opele said there had been many positive highlights though over his long career that made the hours of training worthwhile. He remembers the thrill of hearing the New Zealand anthem played before a touch test match between Australia and New Zealand in Australia in 2009; Australia won then 12-11 in extra time. He also remembers his first class debut as a rugby referee, which was a game between the Thames Swamp Foxes and Buller in August 2013. Opele was selected into a national referee training squad that year, but had to withdraw because of work. “I see the guys who were in that squad now doing international games, so you always wonder if that could have been me.” Opele said referees’ contributions to their sport often lasted much longer than a player’s, yet they were rarely recognised. “So before you decide to shout out some passionate message to an official, just remember noone’s getting paid here, we’re all doing it for the love of sport.”

The traditional Blues v Crusaders rivalry could have an extra frisson starting tonight following Leon MacDonald’s announcement that he is joining what many in the south still see as the enemy from next year. Days after the news was revealed, and in a neat piece of timing, Tana Umaga’s men host the Crusaders at Eden Park and to say the southerners, and their head coach Scott Robertson, will be disappointed by MacDonald’s decision to join the Blues on a threeyear contract will be understating the case somewhat. There will be three main reasons for their anger and the first is MacDonald’s apparent aboutturn from the end of last season when he decided not to take up the option of a second year on his contract at the Crusaders, preferring to move back to Blenheim where his family is based. The former All Blacks fullback had transformed the Crusaders attack and Robertson, his former Crusaders and All Blacks teammate and a man with whom he had also coached at New Zealand under-20 level, was desperate to keep him in Christchurch for another year at least. MacDonald is an organised and straightforward individual who instantly gains the respect of his players – another reason why the Blues wanted him so badly alongside Umaga. And so while Robertson will have been sad to see his mate go he could have consoled himself with the knowledge that MacDonald wasn’t taking his intellectual property to a Super Rugby rival. That’s the second point – the fact that MacDonald will be taking the knowledge gained from a year at the Crusaders, during which they won their first title in nine years, to another New Zealand team, and there are echoes here of Tabai Matson’s flirtation with the Blues while he was still under contract as an assistant coach at the Crusaders in 2014. That in itself is a reminder that rugby is a professional game and coaches can and will move to rival teams, but old habits die hard. The other aspect is New Zealand Rugby’s involvement. The Crusaders might harbour resentment that in seeking to strengthen the Blues, which the national organisation sees as a crucial franchise in terms of the game here, they have in turn weakened the Crusaders. Robertson chose his words carefully yesterday when he said: “When he was here I tried everything I possibly could to keep him here but he made the decision for his family to head to Blenheim as he’s told us, and now he’s a Blue. “He obviously thinks he can make a difference up there – he’s a bloody good coach and a good man so all the best to him. “The coaching world is a professional world and people make these decisions. “It’s not a personal thing at all.” - NZME

■ RUGBY

Read targets July return

Kieran Read

All Blacks skipper Kieran Read is targeting a late role in the Crusaders’ Super Rugby title defence, as he continues his recovery from spinal surgery. Read, 32, has confirmed he is no chance of playing in next month’s test series against France, with the Rugby Championship opener against Australia in Sydney on August 18 looming as his probable international return. Before then, the veteran No.8 is tentatively confident of playing a part in the Crusaders’ last regular-season games and any playoff matches. “There is no time frame on it, hopefully in July some time. “It could be earlier – it could be later,” Read told journalists on Thursday after completing a light training run. “It is just about ticking milestones off, and this is one. “It has been a long time since I have been on the field, actually running around properly. “I still have a lot to do.” Read’s last match was in November against Scotland in Edinburgh, before severe back pain ruled him out of the tour-ending Test against Wales. Crusaders team-mate Sam Whitelock, having led the All Blacks in Cardiff, is favoured to be named skipper when coach Steve Hansen unveils his All

Blacks squad tomorrow for the French series. Whitelock was ruled out of today’s match for the Super Rugby leaders against the Blues at Eden Park with illness. But it is not believed to be a serious ailment. The Crusaders will be captained by flanker Matt Todd, with Quinten Strange promoted to a starting lock role. Test pair Ryan Crotty and Owen Franks are back starting after being rested from last week’s 31-29 escape act against the NSW Waratahs. Prop Tim Perry replaces Joe Moody, who is serving a twogame ban for taking out Waratahs back Kurtley Beale with a high elbow. - AAP

Sam the skipper – but which one? BY GREGOR PAUL There’s no real mystery as to what the All Blacks are looking for in their captain. They want world class performance – for their captain to lead by example, be the best player in the team. It has served them well over the years. Think back to 2004 and 2005 and how Tana Umaga was so often the best player on the park or close to it. On the days he wasn’t the best, it was typically one of either Dan Carter or Richie McCaw who had been better and the latter of course would go on to be the most successful and best captain the All Blacks have produced. McCaw was first and foremost an incredible player whose standards never slipped in 148 tests and performance was at the heart of his leadership for 12 years. Kieran Read, who emerged in the McCaw era, has been a disciple of the performance-first philosophy and last year he produced a number of stunning solo moments in times of real need. But with Read not likely to return until July, the All Blacks must take on France with a stand-in captain who will be named tomorrow. The short list has three names on it: Ben Smith, Sam Cane and Sam Whitelock. All three meet

the quality player criteria. Smith has been a spell-binding All Black since 2013; the sort of player who has gathered admirers around the world for the way he so effortlessly finds a way to be influential. But he’ll be 32 when the series kicks off, hardly ancient, but old enough to believe his playing days won’t extend much past Read’s and hence he’s not an investment in the future. Which leaves the two Sams, both of whom have previously captained the All Blacks, both of whom are in great form and both of whom are likely to be playing test football long after Read has said farewell. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen could easily and readily justify picking either as his captain. Still only 26, Cane has the potential to establish himself as a great All Black. He’s grown immeasurably in the last 18 months and has convinced a once sceptical public that he’s a world class openside. No one in New Zealand tackles harder than Cane. No other No. 7 is as combative and imposing and Cane has shown himself to be a mature and assured captain of the Chiefs this year. Cane has made a strong case, shown he’s ready and yet for all the boxes he can tick, Whitelock can tick more.

Whitelock has been playing loads to build some continuity. He put the emphasis a little with such authority and presence for the last two years now harder on retaining possession that he carries himself with the but not at the expense of playing their natural game and three mana of an All Blacks captain. History favours Blues The last and first ranked teams in the conference will face off as the Auckland squad becomes increasingly desperate for competition points. The Crusaders may have won their last six games on the bounce against the Blues, but the Auckland club can draw on some admirable home form for inspiration. The Blues have won seven of their last 12 home games against the Crusaders, and picked up a further three losing bonus points in that time. - NZME

Rebel off to the UK Former skipper Nic Stirzaker’s time with the Melbourne Rebels is officially over with the Super Rugby club formally releasing the halfback. He and flanker Jordy Reid have signed with new clubs in England. Having led the Rebels for two seasons, Stirzaker joined English powerhouse Saracens in January on a short-term injury cover. However with test halfback Will Genia and ex-Western Force playmaker Michael Ruru now at the Rebels, Stirzaker decided his future lay elsewhere. - AAP

Hooper in negotiations Wallabies captain Michael Hooper is keeping Rugby Australia hanging as he weighs up his playing future. RA is believed to have tabled a five-year offer to Hooper in the hope of retaining the champion flanker’s services through to the 2023 World Cup in France. But with the 26-year-old able to command upwards of a million dollars a season, Hooper says he’d be foolish not to consider other options offshore. “I’d be a fool not to give it a bit of thought. It’s what you do,” Hooper said yesterday. - AAP

Tahs need a victory Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson has challenged his frustrated troops to take the final step and finally notch a hoodoo-busting Super Rugby win over the Highlanders. The Waratahs’ 24-21 loss to the Blues and 31-29 collapse against the Crusaders – from 29-0 up – helped extend Australian teams’ diabolical losing streak against New Zealand opposition to 39 matches. For the Waratahs, it’s been nine-straight defeats to Kiwi rivals since routing the Chiefs 45-25 in Sydney on May 27, 2016. Hoping the rot stops on Saturday night at home, Gibson is quietly confident of his side’s steady improvement. - AAP

Chiefs get it together Despite being without a number of first-choice players, the Chiefs have pieced together a strong starting XV for their clash against the Sharks in Durban tomorrow morning. After their win over the Stormers last week, All Blacks quartet Damian McKenzie, Brodie Retallick, Anton Lienert-Brown and Nathan Harris flew back to New Zealand to attend a North Island Camp this weekend. For a side already facing issues with personnel due to injuries, the loss wasn’t ideal. However, the return of Shaun Stevenson and the versatility of Charlie Ngatai has proved to be a big help in the backline, while Tyler Ardron has again proved to be a smart signing in the forwards. - NZME

■ HARNESS JEWELS

In brief

Dance Craze Jewels starter Australian Group One winning trotter, Dance Craze, has accepted an invitation to the 2018 Harness Jewels. Following the withdrawal of Custodian from the 4YO Ruby yesterday, interest was high from the connections of the former Breeders Crown winner to take part in the race. A four-year-old mare by Muscle Hill out of the great mare, La Coocaracha, Dance Craze has an impressive career record of 11 starts, 8 wins, and 2 seconds. Included in that haul, along with her Group One Breeders Crown win, is a Group Two victory in the Trot NSW Three-YearOld Final. She also placed second in the Group One Victoria Trotting Derby, and second in the Group One Need for Speed Princess Final last season. Dance Craze resumed this week with a win as a four-yearold when successful at Ballarat.

Anton Golino is developing as a top trainer in Victoria. She is prepared by Anton Golino of Cardigan in Victoria, who trains exclusively for the owners (Yabby Dam Farms). Golino’s rise to success has been a remarkable one.

After being involved in a motorbike accident when a farrier, he was forced into a wheelchair for a year. It was after that he decided to head to the United States to ex-

Monarch set to rule Trainer Emma-Lee Browne has had her first taste of the famous Warrnambool jumping carnival and she can’t wait to get back to the “Bool” for another crack at the lucrative spoils on offer. Browne and husband David took the plunge with last year’s northern jumping find, Monarch Chimes, who won his first three hurdle starts in New Zealand before finishing a game fourth in the Great Northern Hurdles (4190m) at Ellerslie in September to round out his season. - NZME

pand his skills. His experience with Noel Daley there then led him to work in Sweden and France, and upon returning to Australia to train he was then approached by Pat Driscoll to work for Yabby Dam Farms. The partnership has gone from strength to strength. Dance Craze is regularly driven in Australia by Nathan Jack, who was set to bring Custodian to the Jewels prior to the horse being withdrawn. Her dam La Coocaracha was an outstanding trotter. She was a three time Group One winner and amassed 23 victories during her career. One of her Group One wins came on New Zealand soil when successful in the 2002 Rowe Cup at Alexandara Park. Dance Craze will now try and emulate her dam by taking success at the highest level in New Zealand. - HRNZ

Track a big concern Jim Collett has only one worry with Sasanof’s Hero on his Awapuni venture. The Matamata trainer has the six-year-old at the top of his game for Saturday’s Rangitikei Gold Cup, but has reservations about the underfoot conditions. “He likes the distance and going left-handed, the wet ground is the only worry,” Collett said. “He has raced well on heavy tracks, but he’s never won.” Sasanof’s Hero is unbeaten this preparation after a resuming success at Rotorua and a follow-up victory at Hawke’s Bay at the end of last month. - NZME

A legend of the turf

By Erin TaskEr

Erin.t@thEguardian.co.nz

Stacey McKerchar is now officially a Mid Canterbury sporting legend. McKerchar (nee Carr), a former New Zealand representative hockey player, had the legend title officially bestowed upon her at last weekend’s Mid Canterbury Sports Awards and it was an honour that came completely out of the blue. The Legend Award was a new initiative introduced to the awards night this year and McKerchar was chosen as the first recipient, something that she said was a real honour. McKerchar debuted for the Black Sticks at just 18 years of age and went on to play 127 games for the national side. She officially retired from national duties after the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games where the Black Sticks won silver. For her, the timing was right. She knew that sport couldn’t last forever and wanted to get a career behind her before starting a family. “That year I had come back pretty much from doing my knee and I knew I really wanted to go to a world cup, which I hadn’t done, and I did that prior to Delhi, so I knew in my head that it was it time, really,” McKerchar said. “I was quite keen to get involved in the family business and do other things.” There was no money in playing hockey for her country, and throughout her career she had to juggle study, work and the sport she loved. “But it’s blimmin’ hard holding a job down when you’re not there. “I reckon I was away more than I was there,” she said. She moved back home to Ashburton to work for her family’s business and continued playing club hockey, and for Canterbury, for the next three years. She got married and now has three sons, Jack, 3, Sam, 20 months, and Ben, three months. Parenting has been a whole new ball game, but McKerchar wouldn’t trade her life now for the world and

knows she bowed out of the sport that had given her so much, at the right time. “I don’t really miss it because I guess you just go on and do other things. “You miss the games, but you don’t miss the training and all that goes with it,” she said. She’s giving a little back to the sport now, holding coaching clinics for some of the rural schools in the area where she grew up, although the school she attended as a child – Lismore School – no longer exists. Coaching could play a role in her future, but right now she hasn’t got the time to commit to a regular coaching gig, and whether she gets to coach her own kids in the future, she doesn’t know. They might play hockey, they might not, and McKerchar’s not worried either way. One day she might even get back on the turf herself and give masters hockey a crack, but for now she’s happy watching from the sidelines, and took great pleasure out of watching her former team win gold at the recent Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. “It was cool to see them going good, because the amount of shoot-outs they have lost. “I think they have lost them ever since they lost in Delhi,” McKerchar said. She said the Gold Coast Games would’ve given the side great confidence and done wonders for the sport in New Zealand. McKerchar unveiled a banner featuring a photo of herself in action for the Black Sticks at last Friday night’s sports awards, which would in the future be on display in the EA Networks Centre, with others to be added in years to come. The legend induction was set to become a regular feature of future sports awards nights. Sport Canterbury Mid Canterbury’s Jan Cochrane said it was a way of recognising Mid Canterbury sportspeople who had gone on to be hugely successful in their chosen sporting fields.

A dramatic week for Nissan off the track has failed to distract their Supercars drivers on it. Nissan pair Michael Caruso and Rick Kelly went one-two in yesterday’s second practice for the Winton Supersprint. Sitting 17th and 13th respectively in the championship standings, they blitzed the Victorian circuit to edge out the frontrunners. Brad Jones Racing’s Nick Percat was the highest-placed driver in the championship (11th) to challenge the Nissan duo in his Holden Commodore. Nissan called time on their backing of the Kelly Racing team,

Manchester City’s stunning and record-breaking Premier League title win in Pep Guardiola’s second season as a manager in England earned them almost £150 million in prize cash, with official figures released showing they have pocketed £149,438,654 ($NZ293.6m) from central funds alone. But the way in which the cash is distributed means City actually take home less than rivals Manchester United, who earn £149,767,145. United receive more because they had two more live TV games (28) in the UK than City (26). - AP

While Cameron Smith’s representative retirement may extend his Melbourne career, the Storm will get a glimpse of life without their skipper when they host Manly tonight. Smith will sit out the clash after been banned for a dangerous tackle, with 21-year-old Brandon Smith starting for just the second time. Storm coach Craig Bellamy said tempering young Smith’s enthusiasm would be key for his team to control the game. “He gets a bit excited as you can see by the way he goes on the field, he’s a bull at a gate, so he’ll need a bit of thought about his game this week playing dummy half.” - AAP

Gallen set to return Cronulla captain Paul Gallen is a near-certainty to return against Canterbury as the resurgent Sharks eye a fifth-straight NRL win. After a month on the sidelines with a grade-two medial ligament tear, Gallen trained well on Thursday night, and coach Shane Flanagan revealed his veteran warhorse “is on track” for tonight’s home clash. In another boost, Josh Dugan is a chance to slot back into fullback provided his troublesome foot pulls up well, while Jayson Bukuya returns from illness to re-take his place in the back row. - AAP

Nissan dominate Winton Supercars practice announcing on Tuesday their intentions to withdraw support from the end of this season. It started off a historic weekend for Caruso in the best possible way ahead of his 150th round start. “It’s been a busy week for our team, but we’re in a good place with good momentum and the cars have arguably been performing at their best,” Caruso said. “As a group, we’ll keep that momentum rolling as best we can, keeping everyone happy, excited and motivated.” Championship leader Scott McLaughlin struggled to 15th in the second practice session after finishing fifth in the morning run.

In brief

The Ford ace is chasing a fifthstraight race victory after claiming doubles on Phillip Island and in Perth. The last driver to do that was Jamie Whincup in 2008 when he went onto win seven on the trot. Red Bull Holden’s Whincup was impressive in the first session to finish third behind Fabian Coulthard and Chaz Mostert, but slumped to 16th place in the afternoon. A stomach bug meant Mobil 1’s James Courtney was unable to take part in practice, as Jack Perkins stepped into the 37-yearold’s Commodore. But Courtney is expected to be well enough for qualifying and the weekend’s racing. - AAP

Despite constant speculation about his future at Canterbury, Moses Mbye won’t be farewelling the NRL club any time soon if coach Dean Pay has anything to do with it. Mbye has been linked with a number of rival clubs as the Bulldogs attempt to navigate their way through the salary cap hell that beckons over the next two seasons. And while the club are adamant they are not actively shopping stars on back-ended contracts to get under the cap, they refused to guarantee all players would see out their deals. - AAP

It seems as if there’s no such thing as an easy stage in the Giro d’Italia. Easy, of course, is a relative term when it comes to riding 214 kilometres at an average speed of 45km/h, but a group of contenders were suddenly in strife, and requiring to tap into unexpected resources to stay in touch with the peloton. That included George Bennett who, with 30km to go, found himself separated from the main group as rain and wind lashed the peloton. It took them a 10 kilometre battle to rejoin. Bennett finishing 28th to retain sixth overall, two minutes and nine seconds behind leader Simon Yates. - NZME

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): When action meets opportunity, things take off. But without truth, those things can go as fast and far as they want and they will not make a lick of difference. Truth is what will cut through and create change. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’re game for however the adventure is delivered, and so you’re guaranteed to have one. If it’s a puzzle, you’ll piece it together. If it’s offered to you on a platter, you’ll eat it. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Competitive people will posture and strut. It might get them some momentary attention – while the true contenders go under the radar to accomplish something meaningful. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The Buddhist figure called Guanyin hears the cries of the world and responds in the manner of a loving mother. Maternal love will come to you today, too, and from surprising sources. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Today, the big thing will be confidence. When you have that, you won’t need much else. Of course, getting confidence is no small accomplishment. It will require you to both scrutinise and reward yourself. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): If you like a certain style of doing things, you appreciate all that falls inside that order. The results become less important, as you’re more concerned with the manner in which those results are delivered. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): That humans can behave like wild animals is not news to you. You’re more impressed by (and sceptical of) long-range domesticity. When loved ones are rational for long stretches, the feral glint is sure to show. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Being very strong in your sense of self, you accept that others are entitled to think and do things differently. And they will. In fact, they’ll surprise you with just how differently they see the world. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Apply the dictates of nature across the board. Leaves change, but change doesn’t leave. You’ll busy yourself with imagining and planning for what’s next. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The value of hard work goes deep into the human psyche, though smart work is quickly taking the starring position. If you keep your nose to the grindstone for too long, you won’t have a nose. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): There are layers of lies to cut through before you get to anything you can work with. Even if you ask the right question, the truth won’t be delivered. The truth is inside the question behind the question. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): If no one is on your side, you’ll be your own best advocate. You’ll have to for survival. If you have a lot of people on your side, you begin to play devil’s advocate. This is a natural product of the luxury of support.
