Rural health call ‘kick in the guts’ BY COLIN WILLISCROFT
COLIN.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mono hits Mexico MOTORING
The Government’s decision to refuse a funding request from a national rural health group has been described as “bitterly disappointing” and a “real kick in the guts” for rural communities. Rural Health Alliance Aotearoa chief executive Michelle Thompson, who also described the lack of funding as “a poor decision that will be regretted in the future” is in her last day in the role today, as the organisation’s board has decided it has no choice but to put it into hiber-
nation. The alliance recently asked the Government for $600,000 to continue to operate, both as a rural health umbrella group and as a provider of suicide prevention training for rural health professionals. That money equated to roughly $1 for every person who lives in a rural community. Thompson said it was offered a contract for suicide prevention training, which amounted to $250,000, but no money to cover its other roles, which include providing rural health leadership, research and policy advice.
With every dollar having to go into service delivery, there was nothing left to spend on those other roles, which she said left the board with no choice but to put the alliance into hiatus, although it will continue its suicide prevention training work until June, to ensure support structures are in place until the end of the current financial year.

■ CASS, PETER STREET INTERSECTION
Intersection ‘not a serious concern’ – council By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton District Council are unlikely to change a tricky intersection that locals fear will cause a major accident. Residents say the Peter Street and Cass Street intersection causes an “astounding” number of crashes because its give way signs are in the opposite orientation to neighbouring intersections. However, the council say it is likely designed in the opposite orientation on purpose – and changing it could cause more frequent, higher severity crashes than if it is left alone. Ashburton District Council Road Safety Co-ordinator Jeremy Lambert said Cass Street is 13 metres wide, long and straight –
which are factors that can cause drivers to travel at higher speeds. “It is probable that a give way sign was installed there to break up the road and slow vehicles down,” he said. “Having an intersection that you have to stop or slow down for hinders drivers from speeding up. This intersection helps to mitigate the risk of speed.” While residents claim there have been four crashes in the past eight weeks, Lambert said police crash data only shows two crashes in the past five years. While this may not include recent crashes or any other unreported crashes, only one of the reported crashes involved minor injuries, he said. “Due to the seriousness of the injuries in the crashes it has not
Changing the signs at the intersection of Cass and Peter streets has been ruled out due to fears of causing even more collisions. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN been of serious concern. Given the low speeds in the area the probability of a crash at this intersection causing serious injuries is extremely low.” And while the council do have the ability to change the intersection orientation – as locals are urging – they would generally not recommend it, he said. Along with the greater risk of speeding he said often changing the priority road causes more crashes than what was occurring originally. “People can forget
that there has been a change in road priority and proceed into the intersection without giving way.” However, in order for more cars to give way, locals say the visibility of the give way signage also needs improvement. “Trucks from the event centre park in the way, and no one sees the sign,” said Cass Street resident Diane Stapleton. “The way it is, cars just don’t slow down.” When it comes to other issues
with local roads, Ashburton District Council said they encourage residents and motorists to contact the council for any concerns. “Although our staff and contractors regularly inspect our roads, it’s important that the community also reports their concerns to us as they are the ones using our extensive network each day,” Ashburton District Council’s Meg Rawson said. “We welcome this information so that we can investigate and take any necessary action.”
Funding rejection for rural health a ‘kick in the guts’ From P1 It would use that time to look at ways to chart a new future, she said, which could include a different structure and funding sources. Although Thompson could only speak in a non-clinical capacity, she said there was a real need for its prevention training work to continue past June, even if it was through another provider, as there is no formal suicide prevention training as part
of any medical-related training course in New Zealand. Thompson said the long-term impact of the funding refusal on rural New Zealand would only really be known further down the track. “It’s too early to tell at this stage but the Government has lost a credible and trusted conduit across a broad range of rural services that provided guidance on identifying issues and ways to address them.
“A united voice has been lost. Whether that gets picked up in the future remains to be seen.” Minister for Rural Communities Damien O’Connor said he respected the work the alliance had done, and although the Government did not write out a cheque for $600,000 the alliance had been offered some contracts, which as far as he was aware were still under negotiation. If those contracts were taken
up it could continue to provide some of its services. He said although the alliance had provided a useful co-ordination role, the Government was reviewing its mental health funding to ensure that money was being spent in the most effective manner possible and the alliance was just one of a number of organisations that worked in the area. O’Connor said he made a commitment to the alliance that the door was always open for it to
apply for funding for future contracts. He acknowledged that in terms of access for the rural community to healthcare services, things needed to improve across the board. All healthcare services were squeezed by the previous government, he said, and those services were conducted by a range of different organisations, many of which could use some of the $600,000 requested by the rural health alliance.

■ TUESDAY NIGHT CRIME SPREE
‘Report it before you Facebook it’ By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
An overnight crime spree in Tinwald described as “disgusting” on social media has gone largely unreported to local police. Dozens of Tinwald residents woke up on Wednesday missing property and took to social media seeking information, however by yesterday morning Ashburton Police said they had still received nothing in the way of complaints or reports. According to posts on Ashburton community Facebook pages, several properties were allegedly robbed, a car was broken into and another car was taken all in the space of a few hours. Senior Sergeant Phil Dean said police urged people to report anything by ringing or visiting your local Police station as soon as possible. While social media can be a good way to inform friends, family and the community, he said, police are more able to take action to find the perpetra-
tor. “If someone’s been the victim of any crime they should be reporting it to police.” Police also urged people to take precautions to prevent thefts from their cars. They said they want “nobody returning to their vehicle to find it has been entered and things have been taken”. “Vehicles can be broken into within time frames of only a few minutes, so we really need people to be aware of this issue. These types of crimes are very fast with the offenders only being in the area for a very short time.” By ensuring cars are always locked, parking in well-lit areas where possible, closing windows and sunroofs and avoiding leaving any valuables in the car, people can lessen their chances of falling victim to opportunistic thieves, police said. “We urge everyone to remain vigilant to unusual or suspicious behaviour in and around carparks and across our community.”

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL
Deputy mayor’s pay package to remain unchanged Deputy Ashburton mayor Neil Brown keeps his $35,901 salary remuneration, despite no longer being chairman of the Ashburton District Council’s finance and business support committee. Committee chairmen are paid $32,054 and new finance chairman Russell Ellis will have his base salary adjusted upwards accordingly. A recommendation to councillors at an extraordinary meeting yesterday was for Brown’s salary to be cut as he no longer had a dual role, but Cr Mark Malcolm disagreed and said he should retain the higher rate as it reflected his position and higher workload. Malcolm moved the motion be
amended for Brown’s salary to remain at $35,901. The amendment was carried, though councillors Thelma Bell and Leen Braam voted against it. Braam, deputy chairman of the finance committee, was overlooked for the chairman’s job. The salary changes must be forwarded to the Remuneration Authority by today. The authority sets the total remuneration available and councillors are paid a base rate of $25,644; those with extra responsibilities are paid more. They are paid from money collected from ratepayers with any surplus in the remuneration budg-
et put back into the general rates fund. A report from council staff said the surplus was likely to be around $20,000. Council is also undertaking a representation review this year. Fewer councillors would not affect the base salary level or the available budget for positions of additional responsibility. As deputy mayor, Brown stands in for mayor Donna Favel as required and assists her to work closely with other elected members to ensure smooth council decision-making. This includes chairing meetings of council, addressing media on council issues and representing the mayor at civic events.

■ ASHBURTON HOSPITAL
Hearty donation helps hospital By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
Equipment that will be used “dozens of times daily” to care for local hearts has touched down at Ashburton Hospital, thanks to a massive, lengthy fundraising effort by the Heart Foundation. An $18,000 boost from the organisation’s Ashburton branch has allowed local cardiac and district nurses in the Acute Admissions Unit (AAU) to purchase equipment including an ECG, a Bluetooth stethoscope and an iPad. The Heart Foundation said they had accumulated the funds over several years through bequests and donations from the greater Ashburton Community including the County Ladies Lions and Rotary. “With so many local groups and people involved in the fundraising we felt we had to spend it locally,” Heart Foundation chairperson Barbara Hurst said. “This seemed like the best possible way to spend it.” The ECG will be a particularly valuable tool for nurses, who said they will use it dozens of times daily to take heart tracings and record any irregular activity. “It’s a vital piece of diagnostic equipment,” Ashburton Hospital charge nurse manager Margaret Anderson said. Meanwhile, the Bluetooth

PHOTO KATIE TODD 190418-KT-003 stethoscope and iPad will be a handy educational tool, clinical nurse specialist Hannah Stocker said.
“It will allow heart murmurs to be recorded, stored on the iPad and then we can play them back to patients,” she said.
“We can use the iPad within the community, take it to people’s homes … it will be a really good way to educate people.”
Hurst said that as of yesterday, the Ashburton branch of the Heart Foundation will be renamed Friends of the Heart Foundation.
Rakaia Gorge bridge work to cause delays, closures Regular users of State Highway 77 through the Rakaia Gorge are being warned about road closures and delays from next week when seismic strengthening and other work will be carried out on the historic No. 1 bridge. The wrought-iron bridge was built between 1880 and 1882 and is one of two-single lane bridges that together span the gorge, which is a popular route for tourists and skiers on their way to Mt
Hutt. It is an official historic place and one of only seven heritage bridges still in use on the country’s state highway network. The works will involve the replacement of the timber deck system, refurbishment of the handrail and other general elements, seismic strengthening and minor safety improvements on the bridge approaches. The job will be carried out by Downer and Opus, under the
monitoring and guidance by heritage conservationists. Road users are being warned that site set up will begin on Monday (April 23). This will include the setting up of site offices and facilities, temporary traffic management and scaffolding. There will be no general pedestrian access across the bridge. The works will be conducted during the day, from 7am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday,
and traffic will be controlled by the use of stop/go signs. Delays could be up to 20 minutes, with traffic allowed through for 10 minutes on every hour and half hour. The bridge will be totally closed to traffic at night (from 10pm until 5am) for a period in mid-May when the deck will be replaced. The only other bridge over the Rakaia River is on State Highway 1.
An engineering heritage report on the bridge says the 55-metre span is unique because of its unconventional truss. There was much discussion at the time it was built and a suspension bridge dismissed because of wind that funneled down the gorge. The second timber bridge was finished in 1884, linking the banks; it was replaced by the current concrete arch bridge in 1945.

■ STUDENT VOLUNTEER WEEK
In brief Weather to deteriorate Parents hoping to take the kids outdoors this school holiday weekend should note that weather fronts embedded in the strong westerly flow currently over the country will continue to bring showers to the west of the South Island and Southland today (Friday). A cooler airmass is to make its way north over the South Island tomorrow, spreading showers onto eastern areas with a few of these showers expected to become heavy for coastal regions from Southland right up to Christchurch.
Road maintenance With several major road works finished or approaching completion, the Ashburton District Council is looking ahead to its other maintenance projects under way in the district. Digouts, spot metalling, culvert work, pothole repairs and the annual footpath, kerb and channel renewals will become the council’s primary roading focus moving into winter. Council roading manager Brian Fauth says just on $2 million has been spent rehabilitating Ashburton’s roads this financial year, with a further $2.5 million on sealed road resurfacing. The district’s footpath, kerb and channel renewals, which are expected to finish in June, are valued at close to $1 million. Full story on www.guardianonline. co.nz
Giving to community By Katie todd

While most students around the district indulge in the freedom of school holidays, dozens are granting their spare hours and idle hands to deserving community groups. This week marks Student Volunteer Week and for the first time ever, Cactus Mid Canterbury and Base Youth members have jumped on board the national initiative. The team comprises of Ashburton Youth Council members, students from Ashburton College and Mt Hutt College. They are tackling a variety of jobs in the community, organised through Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury. On Wednesday, volunteers spent an afternoon at Plunket spent tidying toys, and yesterday 12 volunteers travelled to
the Rakaia Gorge for a spot of conservation work. The volunteers had been looking forward to helping Forest & Bird remove sycamore trees, Safer Ashburton’s Jenny Rae said. Today they will be working with the Ashburton District Council to get the skate park tidy and rubbish-free. Three students had signed up for every volunteer activity throughout the week, while others were tackling what they could. Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury coordinator Dellwyn Moylan said the theme for SVW 2018 is “give, grow, inspire”. “The aim is to encourage students to give time to help the community, grow new skills through volunteering and inspire others to do the same,” she said.

Oops, it’s a confession More than 200 people have been asked whether they want to change their submission on a medical cannabis law change because they have disclosed criminal acts or other sensitive information. Parliament’s Health Committee wrote to members of the public who had admitted to breaking the law or had revealed medical information or other personal details. Around 2000 people have submitted on the law change, which would create a legal exemption for terminally ill people who use medical cannabis. Two hundred and thirty-three people had been contacted to let them know their submission would be published on Parliament’s website, and gave them the option of withdrawing, amending, or anonymising it. - NZME

‘Lesbianism’ diagnosis bewilders woman A Wellington woman is bemused after discovering a doctor had listed “lesbianism” as a diagnosed condition in her medical records. Charlotte, who is in a relationship with another woman, has laughed off the diagnosis, saying she is not the type of person to “get up in arms” about such things. “I’ve never heard the term ‘lesbianism’ used before,” she said. Charlotte, who doesn’t want her surname used, first found out about the diagnosis when the doctor sent a specialist referral letter to another service. She was shown the letter, which listed “lesbianism” along with other health conditions. She later logged on to her Manage My Health app, and found the information listed there as well, with the notes “has a female partner”. “Didn’t know that was a diagnosis but all good,” Charlotte told the Herald. “It doesn’t really bother me, it’s just weird, I think. It would bother other people ... if I were sensitive about that sort of stuff I would probably get quite upset about that. It’s not a disease.” She is not sure yet why the information was relevant to her medical records. Charlotte posted a screenshot of the information to Wellington Facebook page Vic Deals, jokingly asking how much time she had left.
“How long do I have?!?” she wrote. Some users made jokes about their “crippling gayism” while others warned her the condition was terminal. Some of the commenters said it was a system error, and that they had been “diagnosed” as a non-smoker in their app, or that lesbianism was listed so that the doctor did not need to ask about

contraception. But Charlotte said this did not explain why it was also listed as a condition in her specialist referral letter. Former chairman of Rainbow Wellington Richard Arnold said the diagnosis was “absolutely inappropriate”. “It would be difficult for them, I think, to choose that as a diagnosis from a catalogue,” he said.
“Lesbianism and homosexuality in general hasn’t been included as a disorder since the early 70s in the standard diagnostic manual of mental health conditions. “It’s extraordinary that that has happened, this is a doctor who’s completely out of touch, it would seem like to me.” Arnold said someone’s sexuality might be used as a general descriptor that might give context to their life, but no more than that. “There is acceptance in law and practice that homosexual people are just like everybody else, they just happen to be gay. It’s like having brown hair, there’s nothing more serious than that.” While Charlotte was not upset and had not laid any complaints about it, Arnold said it would “make a lot of people very angry”. “I mean, it bothers me to hear that there could be a doctor out there who’s viewing homosexuality as an illness.” He could not think of any medical reason why it would be relevant to include it in the notes. Charlotte’s medical centre and the doctor who recorded the diagnosis have been contacted for comment but are yet to respond. After the Herald made contact with the medical centre, Charlotte said she received a call and an apology from her usual doctor, who was not the one who had made the notes. - NZME
Warrant issued for runaway lawyer An arrest warrant has been issued for a lawyer who fled the country claiming to be in fear for his life. The lawyer, who has name suppression, is now overseas and has said he will never return to New Zealand given death threats against him. He was set to stand trial this week after pleading not guilty to two charges of assault with a weapon, relating to an incident that took place in his office on January 20 last year. There were two alleged victims, and it is understood the weapon allegedly used was a chair. The lawyer has told the court he fled the country after multiple threats were made against his life over a matter unrelated to the alleged assaults, and after the police refused to provide adequate protection. At a pre-trial hearing this week, Auckland District Court Judge Allison Sinclair said she was advised the lawyer couldn’t return because he is fearful a lack of police protection would see him assassinated. Both the prosecution and the lawyer’s defence team, led by Dr Tony Ellis, were agreeable to having the trial proceed in his absence. However, the issue of whether the lawyer was fit to stand trial had recently been raised by Ellis. Judge Sinclair ruled that the lawyer was required to attend court to answer the matter of fitness, which had been raised by Ellis. The only option available was to issue an arrest warrant, she said. - NZME

Exit door open on Kim President Donald Trump said that although he’s looking ahead optimistically to a historic summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un he could still pull out if he feels it’s “not going to be fruitful”. Trump said that CIA Director Mike Pompeo and Kim “got along really well” in their recent secret meeting, and he declared, “We’ve never been in a position like this” to address worldwide concerns over North Korea’s nuclear weapons. But speaking alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe yesterday, after the allies met at Trump’s Florida resort, he made clear that he’d still be ready to pull the plug on what is being billed as an extraordinary meeting between the leaders of longtime adversaries. “If I think that if it’s a meeting that is not going to be fruitful we’re not going to go. If the meeting when I’m there is not fruitful I will respectfully leave the meeting,” Trump told a news conference. He also said that a US-led “maximum pressure” campaign of tough economic sanctions on North Korea would continue until the isolated nation “denuclearises.”
Actress clarifies post Emily Ratajkowski was being literal, not cryptic. The actress and model says she wasn’t signalling that she was pregnant when she posted a photo of herself on Instagram with the caption “Bearing fruit”. The 26-year-old told USA Today she was in a tree holding fruit and “bearing fruit” seemed like the right caption. She says it was sweet that people were excited, but she’s not pregnant. Ratajkowski was in Los Angeles at the premiere of the movie I Feel Pretty. In the film, she appears as the perfect woman in the eyes of Amy Schumer’s character. A South Korean army soldier passes by a TV screen showing file footage of CIA Director Mike Pompeo (left) and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during a news programme at the Seoul Railway Station in Seoul. Abe echoed the sentiment. “Just because North Korea is responding to dialogue, there should be no reward. Maximum pressure should be maintained,” he said. Trump has said his summit with Kim, with whom he traded bitter insults and threats last year as North Korea conducted
nuclear and missile tests, could take place by early June, although the venue has yet to be decided. It would be the first such leadership summit between the two nations after six decades of hostility following the Korean War. Other than the threat posed to by North Korea’s weapons
of mass destruction, another issue overhanging the summit plans is the fate of three Americans detained there. Trump said that was under negotiation and there was a “good chance” of winning their release, but he wouldn’t say whether that was a precondition for sitting down with Kim. - AP
■ CUBA
Diaz-Canel to lead Cuba post Castro family The Cuban government yesterday selected 57-year-old First Vice-President Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez as the sole candidate to succeed President Raul Castro in a transition aimed at ensuring that the country’s single-party system outlasts the ageing revolutionaries who created it. The certain approval of Diaz-Canel by members of the unfailingly unanimous National Assembly will install someone from outside the Castro family in the country’s highest government office for the first time in nearly six decades. The 86-year-old Castro will remain head of the Commu-
Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez nist Party, designated by the constitution as “the superior guiding force of society and the state”. As a result, Castro will remain the most powerful
person in Cuba for the time being. His departure from the presidency is nonetheless a symbolically charged moment for a country accustomed to 60 years of absolute rule first by revolutionary leader Fidel Castro and, for the past decade, his younger brother. Facing biological reality but still active and apparently healthy, Raul Castro is stepping down as president in an effort to guarantee that new leaders can maintain the government’s grip on power in the face of economic stagnation, an ageing population and increasing disenchantment among younger generations.
“I like sticking with the ideas of President Fidel Castro because he did a lot for the people of Cuba, but we need rejuvenation, above all in the economy,” said Melissa Mederos, a 21-year-old schoolteacher. “Diaz-Canel needs to work hard on the economy, because people need to live a little better.” Most Cubans know their first vice-president as an uncharismatic figure who until recently maintained a public profile so low it was virtually non-existent. That image changed slightly this year as state media placed an increasing spotlight on Diaz-Canel’s public appearances. - AP
Khloe Kardashian has reportedly kicked her partner Tristan Thompson out following allegations that he’d been cheating on her while she was pregnant. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star – who gave birth to her daughter True just five days ago – moved her whole life over to Cleveland, Ohio, when she found out she was expecting so that she could be closer to the Cleveland Cavaliers player. But, according to People, the 33-year-old has made the basketball star stay in a nearby apartment while she adjusts to life as a new mother, because she doesn’t want their child’s arrival to be overshadowed by their relationship woes.

■ SAUDI ARABIA
First cinema opens with popcorn, Black Panther The lights dimmed and the crowd of men and women erupted into applause and hoots as Hollywood’s blockbuster Black Panther premiered in Saudi Arabia’s first movie theatre. Though it was a private, invitation-only screening, for many Saudis it marked one of the clearest moments of

change to sweep the country in decades. It’s seen as part of a new era in which women will soon be allowed to drive and people in the kingdom will be able to go to concerts and fashion shows, and tuck into a bucket of popcorn in a cinema. “It’s a new era, a new age. It’s that simple. Things are chang-
ing, progress is happening. We’re opening up and we’re catching up with everything that’s happening in the world,” said Rahaf Alhendi, who attended the showing. Authorities said the public would be able to purchase tickets online. But there may be delays. Movies screened in Saudi
cinemas will be subject to approval by government censors, and Wednesday night’s premiere was no exception. Scenes of violence were not cut, but a final scene involving a kiss was axed. Still, it’s a stark reversal for a country where public movie screenings were banned in the 1980s. - AP
Colin Trevorrow will be back among the dinosaurs as he returns to the director’s chair for the third instalment of the Jurassic World franchise. But for now, fans are going crazy about the new trailer for the second film in the series, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Released overnight Wednesday, the trailer shows star Chris Pratt escaping from the jaws of a sleeping dinosaur, as monster mayhem is unleashed. The franchise’s second film opens June 22 and stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. The first Jurassic World ranks among history’s biggest box-office hits with $1.7 billion in worldwide ticket sales.

is a good time to ...
Keep on top of your leaves by raking them up so they don’t turn to sludge on driveways and smother ground cover plants. Add these leaves straight to your compost. Or stockpile them with other green waste to compost at a later date. Not all leaves should go into your compost. Any leaves that are infected should be discarded with waste and all tools that came into contact with them should be cleaned. Also, some trees, like black walnuts, have toxins in their fallen leaves called hydrojuglone that can cause other plants to turn yellow, wilt and die. English walnut, hickory and pecan trees also produce small amounts of hydrojuglone. The leaves from these trees should also be discarded – don’t put them in your compost.

Get all your winter seedlings in the ground while the soil is still warm enough to give them a good kick-start – if the soil is too cold they will take even longer to grow. If you find you’re starting to mow the lawns more regularly again after summer, it’s a sure sign the soil temperature is still warm but there’s now some moisture in it too.
Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, leeks, lettuce, silverbeet and spinach should all be planted this month. If you have a problem with white butterfly, cover your seedlings with a cloche or bird netting. Make sure the cloche/netting is back from the plants so the butterflies can’t touch the plants and lay their eggs. Harvest pumpkins, potatoes and onions, and store in a cool dry place. Replant your summer annuals with winter annuals. Pull out the plants, dig over your soil and replace them with geranium, primula, polyanthus, cineraria and pansy. Like with your vegetables, if you get your winter annuals in now while the soil is warm they’ll get growing quickly and continue growing right over winter.
If your soil gets wet and soggy during winter, add some lime, and if it’s quite free draining but hard, add some gypsum to break it up. Give the soil an extra boost by adding some compost. Once your seedlings are planted be sure to mulch around them. Spread peastraw and bark mulch to protect your plants from the cold. The bark mulch will also make it tougher for snails and slugs to get to all your seedlings. Remember to move any potted plants that might be susceptible to frost to a warmer spot. April is also a good time to prune your shrubs now that they’ve finished flowering so they’re nice and tidy before the weather gets cold and wet. And give your roses a light pruning before winter – simply take off any dead flower heads.

Mono in Mexico
N
ew Briggs Automotive Company dealership BAC Mexico has given the Mexican supercar community its first sample of Mono courtesy of exhilarating experience sessions in
Mexico City. BAC Mexico launched earlier this month to over 200 VIP guests in the capital, with a phenomenal reaction to the fully road-legal car’s unveiling. Naturally, interest has been incredibly high since the launch, prompting BAC to get potential customers behind the wheel. Mono is the world’s only single-seater, roadlegal supercar that’s become something of a global phenomenon – being exported to over 30 territories worldwide. It’s regarded as the ultimate piece of sporting equipment; a tool that has been perfected for the sport of driving to provide a totally focused and unique experience. And BAC Mexico’s special guests were able to enjoy everything it had to offer over three days of action. BAC’s UK staff – including Co-Founder Ian Briggs with the Technical and Sales teams – headed to Mexico City alongside the BAC Mexico team and COO Ricardo Cadena to put Mono enthusiasts through their paces both on the streets and the track. Mono is renowned for having an accessible nature unrivalled in the supercar world, and BAC Mexico’s guests were able to quickly get to grips with the one-of-a-kind model and fully sample its brilliance. The team descended on the famous Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit in Mexico City to unleash the full potential of Mono on the track and demonstrate its handling, acceleration and braking prowess. Ian Briggs said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have BAC Mexico now fully operational in Mexico City, and what better way to introduce the country to Mono than going hard on the road and track! It was great to see our customers performing so well behind the wheel.”

Dark day for motor racing
S
ignificant events have an impact and often we associate them with what we were doing at the time they occurred. A classic example – albeit now for people of a certain age – is what one was doing when JFK was assassinated. There have of course been other sadly often tragic events since which will be indelibly edged in the memory. Many motoring enthusiasts, especially those interested in Formula One, will no doubt remember how they felt and perhaps what they were doing when they heard Jim Clark lost his life at the wheel of a race car. Last week marked the 50th anniversary of Jim Clark’s death during a Formula Two race at Hockenheim in Germany. At the time car racing was pretty dangerous and there was far too much carnage on the tracks. Many drivers, no matter their level of ability or experience, died or were seriously injured. Without suggesting the racing fraternity and supporters were blasé about what was happening, it was almost accepted some drivers would not survive. After all racing had always been risky. In a way Jim Clark’s untimely death made people think. An incredibly talented driver who had achieved enormous success, Jim Clark was rated amongst the best and had he lived would surely have gone on to even greater success. So all of a sudden people began to ask how this could possibly happen to a driver like him, a man who was so careful and always seemed to be in control. Looking back, safety inside and outside race cars was certainly not always great. Drivers were not cocooned in their cars as they are these days, nor by modern standards did they have much in the way of protective clothing. Track safety was minimal. Jim Clark was a proud Scotsman and after witnessing some horrific incidents his compatriot Jackie Stewart was at the forefront of promoting safety. Consequently safety improved and while losses continued, thankfully over time these have become far less common than previously. But what of Jim Clark? What was it about this man that he’s still
Bernard Egan MOTORING
revered 50 years after his death and people still recall feeling stunned at hearing of his demise? Put simply he was natural driver and a good man. At the time of his death, aged just 32, he had at the time won more grands prix than anyone else. A Scottish farmer, he had come up through the ranks of club racing and then one day amazed legendary Lotus race car designer Colin Chapman when he drove a Lotus. Jim Clark’s performance was incredible, made more so by the fact it was his first ever drive in a single seater. Chapman immediately recognised talent and a close relationship developed. Each was a genius in his own right as designer and driver respectively and consequently massive success followed. A world champion twice – in 1963 and 1965 – Jim Clark and Lotus took America

by storm when winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1965. He was the greatest driver of his era and remains among the best of all time. Jim Clark embodied everything that was good about a true legend – skill, smiles and
humility – combined with a quiet-natured steely determination to succeed. His death shocked those close to him and those who knew of him, but maybe it was not in vain because it certainly help make the motor racing fraternity more safety conscious. The respect in which he was held saw thousands of people gather in Jim Clark’s small home town for his funeral service. Because of the man he was his memory will live on in the annals of motor racing and those who admired him will say they recall where they were or what they were doing when they heard of Jim Clark’s passing.

Red dot defines quality
H
yundai Motor has won two of this year’s Red Dot Design Awards, one of the most renowned international design and innovation prizes. Hyundai’s Fuel Cell vehicle NEXO and KONA small SUV were awarded in the Cars and Motorcycles category. The KONA gained recognition for outstanding design and innovation in ‘SUV/ Off-road vehicles’ and the NEXO showed its excellence in its sub-category. The prestigious award evaluates the product’s functionality, durability, level of innovation and overall quality under aspects of form and function. The NEXO is Hyundai’s second-generation fuel cell electric vehicle. It is characterised by a pure and calm design emphasising its streamlined silhouette and by a floating roof. The NEXO shapes the future of driving and is the eye-catching, technological flagship of Hyundai. The first dedicated hydrogen-powered SUV combines the practicality of an SUV with the clean advanced fuel cell knowhow to offer the most advanced technology on the market with autonomous driving capabilities, smart advanced driver assistance systems and strongest powertrains in the segment. The KONA broadens Hyundai’s successful SUV line-up. With its sleek, sharp and colourful design the KONA creates a unique proposi-
tion in the small SUV segment. Bold exterior lines, a pleasantly spacious interior and a powerful engine line-up make the innovative small SUV eminently suitable for modern, urban customers. Design is increasingly the number one reason why customers choose the Hyundai brand. Receiving this prestigious recognition in
the fifth consecutive year reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to producing cars that demonstrate a unique and evolving design language. The 2018 award follows the recognition in 2017 for the Azera and an ‘Honorable Mention’ for the i30, the prize-winning IONIQ line-up in 2016 as well as double recognition in 2015 for i20 and Sonata, and for i10 and Genesis in 2014.
Drawing on a prominent jury consisting of high profile designers, professors and journalists, the Red Dot Design Award is now recognised globally as one of the most sought-after marks for high quality design. The 2018 contest attracted entries from 59 countries, making the Red Dot Award the largest product competition in the world.

Beetle revitalised
O
verpaid designers and architects with thick-rimmed glasses and pointed shoes and jeans that are too tight have been crowing for years now that ‘retro is in’. It’s led to a renaissance in all sorts of weird stuff from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s that’s now in fashion again, and if you ask me the whole thing is just a scheme to make money out of re-selling all the stuff that time long ago dictated was junk to the hapless and the gullible. So, where did the retro craze originate? Perhaps, it might’ve come from the ‘new’ Volkswagen Beetle. Though the German marque have now killed off the adorkable little hatchback, it’s hard to deny that it was a successful throwback. Based on Golf underpinnings, the Beetle injected Volkswagen with a much needed shot of fun, which did wonders for their reception in America.
And, perhaps most notably of all, it added to the Beetle’s iconic story without taking away from it. So it’s without surprise that in this postBeetle world, the nameplate still has its ardent fans. And they include a guy called Georg Memminger. He and his company, Memminger Feine-Cabrios, have been restoring Beetles to their former glory since 1992. And now they’ve decided to make one of their own – a tasty gunmetal morsel called the Roadster 2.7. From the outset you can tell that this isn’t just any Beetle, with running boards and a wider track complimented by lightweight five-spoke wheels and targa pods behind the two seats. Racy vibes continue inside with black and red bucket
seats completed with retro (ugh) tartan inserts and red belts. The most interesting thing though is what powers it. That 2.7 in the car’s name, as you might’ve guessed, is a reference to the engine’s capacity. It’s an air-cooled 2.7-litre four-banger boxer engine; inspired by VW power-plants of old, and packing 156kW, 247Nm, and a
top speed of 200km/h. That’s a fascinating recipe in a vehicle that only weighs 800kg, and is further enhanced with brakes from a Porsche 911 and revised suspension. Want to sign on the dotted line? Hold your horses ... Memminger are using this as merely a concept. It will enter production (with a thoroughly limited production number of 20 cars) if there’s enough interest from the market. And ... come on. Surely there will be.

Who’s there? The meerkats at Orana Park are quite cheeky. This one kept popping in and out of his den when he heard a noise, so Ashburton Photographic Society member Carol Efford took advantage of this. The result was an acceptance in a competition last year.

OUR VIEW
First call is police, not social media W
hen did we arrive at the point where it’s more important to post to social media about illegal activity than it is to contact the police? There was a bit of shock horror in the newsroom yesterday morning at the Guardian when it was discovered that of all the activity we had seen on Facebook in the previous 24 hours about break-ins, burglaries and theft, that not one incident had been reported to the local authorities. The ease and scope of a social media site like Facebook is, of course, quite appealing for the fast sharing of information or news – particularly of this nature because it generally creates a web of information and great opportunities for the return of
Matt Markham
EDITOR
items that have gone missing. But the truth is, that by not reporting such activity to police, there’s even less chance of finding the same items, or even worse, no chance of catching those responsible. With things on tenterhooks in Ashburton, residents need to be doing everything they can to deter would-be criminals from making the most of any opportunity that they might stumble
across in the course of their day. We are in the middle of an extremely volatile situation here at the moment, where it appears that anyone and everyone is a target. Without vigilance and using a few smarts, things could continue this way for quite some time and communication with police should be an immediate priority in any instance of crime. The more information the police are given, the better it is for everyone. More information leads to a more likely capture of any offenders and therefore the streets become that little bit safer for everyone in the community. If you were in the shoes of local police, especially new Senior
Sergeant Phil Dean, you could surely imagine how frustrating it would be to be hearing of crime sprees across the district, but not actually being informed of them directly. They want to see criminals accounted for just as much as the next person, but need the buy-in from the community to make it happen. The misconception that police don’t actually do anything about reported crime is exactly that, a misconception. Speaking first-hand, they do an outstanding job of chasing up any information they are given and it’s often the culmination of a whole heap of information from different situations that can lead to an offender being caught.
So, we need to be smarter, Ashburton. A lot smarter. If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of being a victim of crime, don’t let the first thing you do be post about it to a Facebook page – contact the police immediately and allow them to follow their processes. After that, it’s open season. Post to your Facebook page, Instagram account, Twitter feed as frequently as you like and hopefully somehow between the combination of the two you will, eventually, see a resolution. We are often critical of the work done by police in this district, but it’s incredibly hard for them to do anything if they’re not being told about things in the first place.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Friday, April 20, the 110th day of 2018. There are 255 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On April 20, 1898, the United States moved closer to war with Spain as President William McKinley signed a congressional resolution passed the day before recognising Cuban independence and authorising US military intervention to achieve that goal. On this date: In 1792, France declared war on Austria, marking the start of the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1889, Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria. In 1914, the Ludlow Massacre took place when the Colorado National Guard opened fire on a tent colony of striking miners; about 20 (accounts vary) strikers, women and children died. In 1938, Olympia, Leni Riefenstahl’s documentary about the 1936 Berlin Olympic games, was first shown in Nazi Germany. In 1968, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was sworn in as prime minister of Canada. In 1972, Apollo 16’s lunar module, carrying astronauts John W. Young and Charles M. Duke Jr, landed on the moon. In 1978, a Korean Air Lines Boeing 707 crash-landed in northwestern Russia after being fired on by a Soviet interceptor after entering Soviet airspace; two passengers were killed. In 1988, gunmen who had hijacked a Kuwait Airways jumbo jet were allowed safe passage out of Algeria under an agreement that freed the remaining 31 hostages and ended a 15-day siege in which two passengers were slain. In 1999, the Columbine High School massacre took place in Colorado as two students shot and killed 12 classmates and one teacher before taking their own lives. Ten years ago: Pope Benedict XVI
celebrated his final Mass in the United States before a full house in Yankee Stadium, blessing his enormous US flock and telling Americans to use their freedoms wisely. Five years ago: On or about this date, movie musical star Deanna Durbin, 91, died near Paris. One year ago: In Paris, a gunman fatally shot a police officer on the Champs-Elysees just days before
the French presidential vote; the gunman was killed by police. Cuba Gooding Sr, who sang the 1972 hit Everybody Plays the Fool, died in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles; he was 72. Some ideas to save the CBD before it’s too late
H
ere’s a few thoughts from me regarding the CBD in Ashburton. I’m thinking it’s time for some drastic changes. Our retailers are facing enough challenges these days online without potential buyers driving on by because they can’t get a park. As well as removing hurdles for customers – like no available parking – we need to give people a reason to stop and shop. So without knowing too much about logistics and expense, here’s my take on things: ■ Let’s close East Street to traffic between Havelock and Moore streets. ■ Let’s turn the parking on Havelock, Burnett, Tancred and Moore streets to angle parking between East and Cass streets. Although Moore Street could be a bit hectic for that to work. These angled parks I think should be aimed at both the CBD workers and local shoppers. There should be free parking all day. ■ The West Street carpark should be one hour free parking. This should leave it pretty much free for passing traffic. Centre used to be. A mix of that, Boulevard Day and Multi-Cultural Bite. Make the green area a picnic/ lunch eating space with funky seats and big outdoor bean bags. Each of the shops could be responsible for housing a few of these each night. Buskers could entertain during the lunch break. The current carpark spaces on the west side of East Street could be turned into stall sites. I’m not talking about the ‘same old, same old’ stalls. The ones selling AC/DC tee-shirts, you can get a tee-shirt from Sparrows or Farmers. The stalls can’t compete with the existing shops, after all that is why we are doing this right? We need outside-the-square stalls. Like the fella on Chalmers Avenue who sells his very cool wooden kids’ toys. Maybe the Men’s Shed could whip up some stuff to sell – bird houses, weather vanes etc. We have enough cafes and coffee outlets in town, so any food stalls must be different. Perhaps our immigrant community could have some food stalls. They could even hold cooking classes at their stalls. We could have a farmers’ mar-

It would be nice to wander up the street any day of the week and get a dozen free-range eggs or a punnet of strawberries. The council is going to miss out on some revenue via the parking and fines, although there will be some via the West Street carparks. This will be compensated somewhat via the stall fees. We will need a heap of new rubbish/recycling bins along the road and maybe even a part-time cleaner/street warden. Perhaps we could get an attachment fitted to the back of Goldberg’s scooter and a uniform much like those worn by Jon and Ponch in CHiPs. Add a badge with

Slap in the face? I was amused by the story about our mayor and council members being disappointed by the lack of public turn-out at the rates communication meeting. Perhaps the lack of people attending reflects on the last two major pieces of feedback offered by the community to the council being ignored. A very large number of people offered feedback to keep the i-Site open. Another large amount of the community took their time and energy to offer feedback on the EA Networks pricing structure, this also has been ignored and prices increased regardless. The community has offered feedback on things they have deemed important, without any influence, so maybe no-one turned up as they thought it pointless? Mark Douglas

■ EGG RECALL
‘Proliferation of filth’ Before a US farm voluntarily recalled 207 million eggs, government inspectors found rodents scurrying in manure pits, equipment that was coated with grime and food debris, and outside a swarm of “large flying insects too numerous to count”. Unsanitary conditions were found during multiple inspections of a Rose Acre Farms facility in Hyde County, North Carolina, that allowed for the “proliferation and spread of filth and pathogens throughout the facility that could cause the contamination of egg processing equipment and eggs,” according to a report from the Food and Drug Administration detailing inspections. A review of the farm’s pest control records flagged an ongoing rodent infestation, with rodents, dead carcasses and baby mice observed, along with workers who weren’t following proper sanitary practices. The farm voluntarily recalled the eggs earlier last week after more than 20 consumers became
ill from a suspected salmonella poisoning. The recall is the largest of eggs in the US since 2010, when more than 550 million were recalled from two Iowa farms, according

Work, and more work A company is under fire after a midlevel banker sent a late-night email to staff members berating them for not still being in the office. The unnamed male banker, who works for Wall Street bank Moelis & Co, sent the email after he had toured the office at 12.30am one night and found 11 employees at their desks. The email criticised junior employees, known as analysts, for daring to be at home after hours. - NZME
Cards still expensive Kiwis are still paying too much for credit and debit card transactions compared with Australia and the UK, says Retail NZ. Research from the retail organisation’s 2018 Payments Survey showed on average, merchant service fees in New Zealand were significantly higher than other jurisdictions.

to the US website Food Safety News. The FDA’s inspection report “is based on raw observations and in some cases lack proper context,” Gene Grabowski, an outside
spokesman for Rose Acre Farms, said in an email. The company is preparing a formal response to the report and “until then, we would urge everyone to wait until all the facts are presented before rushing to judgment”. Throughout a March 28 review, federal inspectors “observed condensation dripping from the ceiling, pipes and down walls onto production equipment” and pooling on floors, the FDA said. Employees were found in violation of proper sanitary procedures, and a steel wool scrubber used to clean debris off equipment was stored on a cart in a dustpan that had a pool of water “floating with debris and grime”. The company voluntarily recalled the eggs after an investigation of illnesses on the East Coast triggered an inspection of the facility. The recall is equivalent to about 90 days of output at the farm, which produces 2.3 million eggs a day. - NZME

ith reporting season now under way in the US and plenty of economic data to process, the trade drama and rising geopolitical tensions from the past few weeks have been put to the side for the moment at least. Markets have benefited from the positive earnings season as well as rising commodity prices. It has been a busy week for the New Zealand market with plenty of corporate newsflow to keep investors on their toes as well as a few scheduled releases. Fletcher Building stole headlines early in the week, announcing that it would go into a trading halt while it executed a capital raising. The $750 million entitlement offer is to strengthen the balance sheet and enable the company to refocus its portfolio. Shares were being offered to existing holders as $4.80, representing a 23.4 per cent discount to the closing price. In addition to the capital raising, Fletcher Building has had to establish a new standby banking facility of $500 million. The company also announced that it would be divesting two businesses; Formica and Roof Tile Group. This will allow Fletcher Building to refocus its portfolio on its Australian and New Zealand activities. This is the latest in a string of news from Fletcher’s, which has included numerous downgrades to its Buildings + Interiors division and seen many staff changes. It has also followed rumours that Australian conglomerate
Jeremy Flood ON THE MARKETS
Wesfarmers was looking to acquire the company. Comvita also grabbed headlines, downgrading guidance for the full year as honey production remains hampered by poor weather. However the downgrade was accompanied by the news that a possible suitor for the company was undertaking due diligence, and there could be a takeover offer looming. The a2 Milk Company provided some more upbeat corporate news, announcing that it has signed an agreement with Yuhan Corp in South Korea. Yuhan, a pharmaceutical company, has the exclusive sales and distribution rights for a2 Milk. The latest Global Dairy Trade auction ended a four auction losing streak and saw the headline index gain 2.7 per cent. All products that were on offer saw price gains at the auction with the biggest gain coming from Lactose. Whole milk powder saw a narrow gain of 0.9 per cent, adding to the price rise from the previous auction. Fonterra’s forecast payout for the 2017/18 season is $6.55 per kilo of milksolids and is the highest it has been since the record 2013/14 season. The most anticipated event of
this week in New Zealand was the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI). For the quarter, inflation was 0.5 per cent, above the RBNZ estimate for 0.4 per cent and in line with analyst expectations. The annualised change was in line with expectations, with prices increasing 1.1 per cent. For the year, housing and household utilities was the main segment behind the increase in prices, while alcohol and tobacco saw the biggest increase on a quarterly basis due to increased taxes on tobacco. The UK also released inflationary figures this week for March, and surprised the market to the downside, dropping to the lowest level in a year. Prior to this, expectations were for the Bank of England to further tighten monetary policy before the end of the year, however, following the weaker inflation, this has changed. The British pound dropped sharply following the news. Reporting season is taking headlines and certainly helping investors to shrug off recent market uncertainty. Although still in the early stages (only around 25 per cent have reported so far), it has been a positive start and this is expected to continue.

In brief
■ RICCARTON
Trainers’ change of focus Leading trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman have switched their attention from the riches of Sydney racing to chasing five New Zealand features this weekend. That has even meant a trip south for a couple of the stable’s charges, Saint Emilion and Podravina, for the Gr.3 CocaCola Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m) and the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes (2000m) respectively at Riccarton tomorrow. As well, the stable will have a host of runners at Pukekohe the same day, including five runners in feature races, among them Mime in the Gr.2 Manco Easter Handicap (1600m) and Gundown and Marcellina in the Gr.2 Valachi Downs Championship Stakes (2100m). While preparing each of these horses for the weekend assignments, Baker and Forsman have welcomed home their Sydney squad of Gr.1 Sydney Cup (3200m) runner-up Zacada and their four Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m) runners, Vin De Dance (fourth), Mongolian Marshal (eighth), Weather With You (ninth) and Mission Hill (13th). “They’re all home and going out for a spell,” Baker said. “Zacada went huge in the Sydney Cup and just missed out. He’s now qualified for the Melbourne Cup and so is Vin De Dance. “They’ll both have a good spell and we’ll work out plans to get them both back to Melbourne and maybe the Cup. “Vin De Dance is owned by OTI and I know they’re keen on the Cup.” Vin De Dance tried hard to repeat the New Zealand Derby – Australian Derby double of the Baker and Forsman-trained Mongolian Khan and, though he missed out, he put up a brave performance.
Tim Williams won’t have to search too far to find confidence ahead of Addington’s meeting tonight. Williams, who has been based in the North Island overseeing the strong team of horses that the All Stars stable have domiciled up there for feature racing, returned home this week to handle the majority of the driving duties for New Zealand’s leading stable on home soil. Williams has picked up the plum drives on likely hot favourites, Mr Kalypso, Mach Up and Ohanzee and Rasmussen gave them all a big shot of grabbing the lion’s share of the prize in their respective assignments. - NZHN More Wonder will chase stakes success at Pukekohe tomorrow despite the persistence of Hong Kong interest in the Mossman colt. Hamilton trainer Graeme Rogerson revealed More Wonder had attracted “big money” offers but confirmed he would take his place as favourite in the Listed Diamond Lodge Champagne Stakes. - NZME
Manning set for winter
Saint Emilion will be ridden by Lisa Allpress in the Canterbury Gold Cup tomorrow. “All we needed was a bit of rain for all our Derby runners,” Baker said. “Randwick usually gets some for this meeting, but this year it didn’t come. “It would have made a difference to all the Kiwi horses over there.” Though major success eluded New Zealand’s leading trainers at the Sydney Championships, they have a strong hand in gathering more black-type wins this weekend with Saint Emilion a leading prospect in the Canterbury Gold Cup. “You just have to forget his last run,” Baker said. “He’s well and this is the last weight-for-age race beyond a
mile for the season so we’ve got to have a go. “Lisa Allpress will ride him and she should suit him.” Allpress will also ride stablemate Podravina in the New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes and Baker believes the daughter of Bel Esprit has the ability to be hard to beat. “She’s racing well and it’s a good chance to try and get some black print with her,” he said. Owned and bred by Sir Peter Vela, Podravina is lightly tried, having had just four starts and she has improved with each outing. At Pukekohe, Mime will be attempting to register her third Group Two win in the Manco
Easter Handicap, having won the Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (2000m) in 2016 and the Travis Stakes (2000m) last year. “She was trapped four-wide when resuming at Awapuni, but she’s come through it well and she’s a good mare when she’s right,” Baker said. Gundown goes into the Championship Stakes with a game last start second in the Gr.3 Manawatu Classic (2000m) behind the smart Sherrif, who will again be a rival on Saturday, while stablemate Marcellina is a maiden who has twice been Group-placed. “Gundown went well last time and doesn’t mind soft tracks, but it’s a bit of worry with Marcellina,” Baker said. - NZME
Reid has one eye on Taylor Mile opposition The words of a champion horseman are one of the few ghosts haunting trainer Steven Reid as he prepares Star Galleria for tonight’s $100,000 Taylor Mile. The speed freak pacer is the $2.60 opening favourite for the group one sprint, one of four group races as Alexandra Park kicks off its last major carnival of the season tonight. Star Galleria has developed from a speedster lacking strength last season into one of the best pacers in the country behind Lazarus with a series of high-class victories over the summer, downing the likes of Heaven Rocks and Jack’s Legend with ease. While he hasn’t raced since his effortless win in the City of Auckland Free-For-All a month ago, the four-year-old thrilled Reid

winning his Pukekohe workout last Saturday in a fast time on a soaked track. “He felt great and I have no doubt he is better than he was a month or two ago,” says Reid. “He has got stronger again and I couldn’t be happier with him. “The Puke track is fast at the moment but he still paced 3:2 for his 2400m on a wet track, his last 800m in 55 seconds so he is ready.” The only concern Reid had after last Saturday’s spectacular workout win was the words of champion driver Maurice McKendry, who drove runner-up Let It Ride. “Maurice sat on our back and never pulled out and after the workout he told me his horse was jogging,” says Reid. “So maybe he has come over here in really good form, I suppose we will find out on Friday.”
Trainer Steven Reid Let It Ride is a member of Tim Butt’s Menangle stable and was a close second to eventual Miracle Mile runner-up Jilliby Kung Fu in the Chariots of Fire. He looked very impressive during last Saturday’s workout and his gate speed and sprint prowess are honed by his Sydney racing diet so with barrier two he
has emerged as a real danger in the race. A G’s White Socks has the ace draw and More The Better is drawn on Let It Ride’s back, suggesting all four favourites should be handy, almost always the key to Taylor Mile success. Trotting young gun Enghien has opened favourite against the older horses in the $100,000 Anzac Cup, with the aid of barrier two and the fact his connections believe he is more comfortable around Alexandra Park. Star squaregaiting sophomore Luby Lou is out of the three-yearold Sires Stakes Trotters Championships and is likely to miss next week’s Northern Trotting Derby, too. Losing skin off her hock after a run-in with a fence sealed her withdrawal from the first of the back-to-back features. - HRNZ
It’s the changing of the guard at Ralph Manning’s Cambridge stable with his winter team gathering momentum, but he still has a few shots to fire with his out-going squad. Manning lined up several of his winter team at the Te Awamutu trials on Tuesday, including his problem-plagued galloper Wanabefamous, who won an open 1400metre heat in the hands of apprentice Ashvin Goindasamy. Manning is looking forward to stepping out his winter squad, especially Wanabefamous, whose seven wins include the 2014 Listed Taumarunui Gold Cup. - NZME
Demonetization heals Pukekohe trainer Nigel Tiley is taking a cautious approach with his exciting three-year-old Demonetization. Demonetization was sidelined with a slab fracture on his fetlock joint when on track for a tilt at the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) and has been off the scene since winning the Auckland Guineas (1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. “He didn’t have surgery. We’ve just let it heal on its own and he’s coming along well,” Tiley said. - NZME
Obsessive’s future bright Te Awamutu trainer Clayton Chipperfield notched up a welcome win at Matamata on Wednesday with Obsessive and the promise of much more to come. The former successful jumps jockey’s main role is breaking-in and pre-training and he knows how to put the winning polish on them, as he showed with Obsessive, a Dick Karreman-owned three-year-old who credited Chipperfield with his first training success since he produced Cut To The Chase to win at New Plymouth 14 months ago. - NZME

The farm, in association with Shadai Stallion Station, will offer the Gr.1 Group One-winning son of sire sensation Deep Impact for $12,500 + GST. - NZME

Sir Michael Jones has beaten Annette King in the election race to take a seat on the New Zealand Rugby board. The former All Blacks great was nominated as an independent director by the Tasman Rugby Football Union, with the backing of the Taranaki Rugby Football Union, at the 126th New Zealand Rugby annual general meeting. Farah Palmer was also reelected to the board for a further three year term. - NZME
Read, Coles still out Kieran Read is unlikely to play for the All Blacks in the French test series and neither is Dane Coles, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen saying that his star pair would take a very cautious approach to their return from injury. Skipper and No. 8 Read is yet to play this year due to back surgery in December – the procedure done to free a trapped nerve. Hooker Dane Coles is also yet to make a return in 2018 due to an operation following a ruptured ACL (knee) ligament. - NZME

■ RUGBY
Hard yards reap rewards Former Ashburton College First XV player Richard Sooaemelelagi has been awarded a scholarship at Ara Institute of Canterbury. He was one of six Canterbury club rugby players to receive scholarships to study in the building and construction fields. Sooaemelelagi now plays rugby for Waihora.
The six are studying electrical and carpentry apprenticeships, engineering and construction management thanks to a threeyear agreement between the Canterbury Rugby Football Union and Ara. A key part of the agreement are scholarships, up to a total value of $40,000, which are open
to any player who is a registered member of an affiliated CRFU club. It aims to engage players in tertiary education, as well as help develop the skills of rugby club office staff and offer access to the high performance training facility The Zone at Ara for the Canterbury U19, Women’s and
Maori representative teams. The other players awarded scholarships recently were Korbyn Gray from the Saracens club, Harrison Proctor from Ashley RFC, Tafesilafa’I Lalaoilo from New Brighton RFC, Adam Bignell from the Sydenham RFC and Ieuan McLeod from the CRFU.
Welcome return for Franks, Dagg All Blacks Owen Franks and Israel Dagg will make their highlyawaited return to Super Rugby in a much-changed Crusaders starting side to face the Sunwolves in Christchurch tomorrow night. Prop Franks is back from an Achilles problem while Dagg will slot in on the right wing after having got over a knee complaint. Coach Scott Robertson has made eight personnel changes to his run-on XV, as well as three positional tweaks. Those coming in include the lock pairing of Scott Barrett and Quinten Strange, for Luke Romano and Sam Whitelock.
Romano goes to the bench, while regular skipper Whitelock is being rested, meaning Matt Todd will be captain on Saturday night. In the back row, Tom Sanders shifts to No. 8, allowing 23-yearold Ethan Blackadder to make his Super Rugby debut as blindside flanker. Among the changes in the backline, Mitchell Drummond will start at halfback and Mike Delany at first five-eighth. There will be another Super Rugby debutant if Jack Stratton comes off the bench to take over from Drummond.
The defending champion Crusaders, who sit second in the New Zealand conference, had a bye last week after beating the Jaguares 40-14 in Argentina. The Sunwolves are the only side yet to win a match. George Bridge, Israel Dagg, Tim Bateman, Ryan Crotty, Manasa Mataele, Mike Delany, Mitchell Drummond, Tom Sanders, Matt Todd (capt), Ethan Blackadder, Quinten Strange, Scott Barrett, Owen Franks, Ben Funnell, Tim Perry. Reserves: Andrew Makalio, Wyatt Crockett, Chris King, Luke Romano, Pete Samu, Jack Stratton, Mitch Hunt, Seta Tamanivalu. - NZME
Coach Allan Bunting says the excitement of the dramatic sudden-death extra-time win over Australia on the Gold Coast on Sunday has energised the team. But he says the job is only partly completed in a year that includes New Zealand’s defence of the World Cup in San Francisco in July.
“We won a gold medal which is great, but we’ve got to refocus,” he said. “We’ve achieved the first part of our goal at the Commonwealth Games, and we still have a lot of improvement to make.” New Zealand sit second on the points table behind Australia. The Black Ferns Sevens will
Shields set to start Hurricanes flanker Brad Shields could be playing for England as early as June. England coach Eddie Jones has been given approval to select Shields for England’s tour of South Africa despite the fact that the New Zealand-born flanker could play up to six Super Rugby matches for the Hurricanes after the threetest series against the Springboks. Shields has been in excellent form in the opening seven rounds of Super Rugby, captaining the Hurricanes to the top of the ladder. - NZME
Smith back for Reds Wallabies great George Smith is set to play for the Queensland Reds for the first time this season in the Super Rugby clash with the Chiefs at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday. The 37-year-old Smith has been named on the Reds bench for his return from back surgery. The Reds need a win to stay in touch with the Waratahs and Brumbies in the Australian conference. - AAP Matt Todd
Black Ferns Sevens refocus on world series Waikato’s Huia Harding is set to make her Black Ferns Sevens debut as the new Commonwealth Games champions turn their attention back to the World Rugby women’s sevens series. Harding is the one newcomer to the squad for the Kitakyushu tournament in Japan this weekend.
Some overdue good news for Canterbury fans starved of All Blacks action. Christchurch’s lack of an international capacity and quality stadium, means test match rugby will bypass the city for the forseeable future. However, the All Blacks will play a warm-up squad hit-out against each other and Canterbury players, in Christchurch. The match will be scheduled somewhere between the Super Rugby final on August 4, and the opening Bledisloe Cup clash in Sydney on the 18th. - NZME
face up to Japan, the United States and France in pool play on Saturday. Black Ferns Sevens: Huia Harding, Shakira Baker, Stacey Waaka, Niall Williams, Sarah Goss (captain), Michaela Blyde, Tyla Nathan-Wong, Kelly Brazier, Gayle Broughton, Theresa Fitzpatrick, Portia Woodman, Tenika Willison. - NZME
Rebels ring changes Melbourne have made four changes, including the return of Wallabies back Reece Hodge, as they seek a breakthrough Super Rugby win against the Bulls in Pretoria. Hodge missed last round’s home loss to the Jaguares with a hamstring injury and returns in the centres, while Michael Ruru will have his first Rebels start replacing injured halfback Will Genia. Test lock Matt Philip has also come into the starting line-up as the Rebels chase their first win in South African. - AAP

Dufty the danger man By DaviD Skipwith Warriors coach Stephen Kearney says his side will need to be at their best to contain St George Illawarra’s playmakers and lightning quick fullback Matt Dufty in tonight’s NRL clash in Auckland. The two best attacking teams go head-to-head at Mt Smart Stadium with the unbeaten Dragons sitting atop the NRL ladder after six rounds, while the third-placed Warriors hope to bounce back following their first defeat last week against Brisbane. The Warriors are determined to find more intensity and energy after a flat display in the 27-18 loss to the Broncos and better line speed will be crucial to their hopes of stifling the Dragons roll-on. The visitors boast plenty of forward power along with creativity in the halves and finishing class out wide, but Kearney is confident the home side can match them in all areas if his players perform to their potential. “The spine that they have, young Dufty, (Cameron) McInnes, Ben (Hunt) and Gareth (Widdop), they’re the form spine of the com-
petition and they’ve got some guys there in between them all that are doing a fantastic job,” Kearney said. “They’re putting real pressure on the opposition with their attack and then obviously you’ve got to defend and they’re doing that very well also, so we’re going to be up against it. “We know if we play our best game of footy then we give ourselves a great opportunity.” The Warriors have plenty of flair of their own with wing David Fusitu’a bagging eight tries so far to be the competition’s leading try scorer on the end of a potent rightedge featuring Shaun Johnson, Tohu Harris and Peta Hiku, but both Dufty (6) and Dragons centre Euan Aitken (5) are right behind him. McInnes’ speed out of dummy half will also test the Warriors ruck defence, while Kearney hinted they will look to kick away from Dufty after he scored two stunning tries in last week’s 40-20 win over Cronulla. “Try and keep the ball away from him for starters,” Kearney said. - NZME Dragons flyer Matt Dufty has Stephen Kearney on red alert.

Adams fouls out as Jazz draw level Rookie Donovan Mitchell scored 13 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter to help the Utah Jazz defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder 102-95 yesterday and tie their Western Conference playoff series at one win game apiece. Derrick Favors had career playoff bests of 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Jazz, and Ricky Rubio had 22 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in the first playoff win of his seven-year career. Russell Westbrook had 19 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds for the Thunder. Paul George, who scored 36 points in Game 1, finished with 18 on 6-for-21 shooting. Carmelo Anthony scored 17 points, but made just six of 18 shots. Utah outrebounded Oklahoma City 56-46 to take home-court advantage from the Thunder. Game 3 will be on Saturday in Utah. Oklahoma City had two chances in the final minute to trim Utah’s lead with the Jazz leading 99-95, but Anthony missed 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions. Utah led 53-46 at halftime behind 12 points from Rubio and 10 points and eight rebounds from Favors. Oklahoma City made just nine of 25 shots inside the 3-point line in the first half. George led the Thunder with 11 points at the break. Steven Adams picked up his

Media upsets Bennett Wayne Bennett has walked out on a press conference after taking exception to questions about his coaching future at Brisbane. On the eve of the Broncos’ clash with Melbourne, Bennett did not want to respond to a media report claiming the Storm’s off-contract coach Craig Bellamy had not ruled out moving to Brisbane next year. “I am coach here next year, that could change. But if you don’t want to talk about the footy I will leave it at that,” said Bennett before walking off. Bennett is not off contract until the end of 2019. - AAP
Josh Morris hits back On the eve of his 250th NRL game, Canterbury centre Josh Morris has fired back at South Sydney’s Sam Burgess for accusing him of taking a dive and “trying to get a career in Hollywood”. The former Origin player has revealed he had been distressed and gasping for air after being elbowed in the throat in their Good Friday clash. “I’m angry at Sam’s comments,” Morris said. “I was in serious pain and gasping for air. If I was hit a couple of centimetres higher, the outcome could have been far worse, which I don’t think he realises.” - AAP
Celtics edge closer The Boston Celtics are just two wins away from eliminating the Milwaukee Bucks from the NBA playoffs after dominating game two of their first- round series. The Celtics won 120-106 in Boston to take a 2-0 lead. Milwaukee will host games three and four and Celtics coach Brad Stevens warned his players not to relax. “If we don’t play with an edge we will get beat by 30, so we better play with an edge, play competitive and be tough,” he told reporters. “You don’t have a chance if you don’t do that.” - AAP
Wanderers sack coach Western Sydney coach Josep Gombau has been sacked less than six months into his three-year A-League contract. It’s understood chief executive John Tsatsimas told Gombau the news yesterday, four days after the Wanderers failed to make the finals in his first season in charge. A short club statement said the call had been made “following a review of the season”, one massively disappointing considering the strength of the squad on paper. - AAP
Ronaldo does it again Cristiano Ronaldo came through for Real Madrid again, this time with a backheel flick that saved his team from a loss in the Spanish league. Ronaldo netted an 87thminute equaliser with a subtle touch of the ball with his back to the goal, redirecting a low shot by Luka Modric from outside the area to give Madrid a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao yesterday. - DPA
Langer first in line fourth foul with 6:46 left in the third quarter and the Thunder down 65-58, yet Oklahoma City responded with a run. George’s 3-pointer put the Thunder up 69-67. Oklahoma City closed the quarter on a 21-9 run to take a 79-74 lead.
The Thunder held the Jazz to 7 for 23 shooting in the third quarter before Mitchell took over in the fourth. George played through a bruised right hip. Adams fouled out of yesterday’s game with 2:48 minutes left to play. - AP
Kiwi Steven Adams was part of a losing Oklahoma City Thunder effort in yesterday’s NBA clash with the Utah Jazz.
Australia has reportedly chosen its new coach following the explosive fallout to March’s ball-tampering controversy which saw popular coach Darren Lehmann resign. Former Aussie opening batsman Justin Langer is set to take the reins. The 105-test legend won the race against former teammates Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie. - AAP

Scott McLaughlin will work along the lines and get it right.” McLaughlin will have his focus very much on the Falcon and his 2018 campaign in the short-term however. After a bad opening round in Adelaide he has clawed his way back to sit second in the championship standings ahead of this weekend’s round four at Phillip Island. The Holden has certainly had the edge so far this season but McLaughlin expects the fast and flowing Phillip Island track to suit his car better. “Heading to Phillip Island this weekend I think we actually have a really good shot at it,” the 24-year-old championship runner-up explained. “It is a track I really enjoy as a driver and the team with the car as well. “We have always been pretty quick there. “It is very high speed so you need a lot of downforce but as well as that you need some engine power. “We have always had really good engine power at DJR.” - NZME

By Dale BuDge Kiwi Supercars driver Scott McLaughlin has welcomed news he will be driving a Ford Mustang in next year’s championship. Ford announced this week that they will return to the Supercars category for the first time since 2014 and will supply Tickford Racing as well as McLaughlin’s DJR Team Penske Racing with two-door Mustangs that will replace the FGX Falcons that have been used for the past few years. “Yeah it is awesome,” McLaughlin said. “At the end of the day it has been one of those things where Ford has been off and on in the category to now bring back an iconic car, which made a massive comeback to the scene in Australia, New Zealand and American a couple of years ago, is pretty cool. “I have driven some awesome cars in my time, but this will be the coolest by a country mile. “It has been an awesome thing with the fans. “We have to finish this season off but it is an awesome way for 2019 to go ahead.” The return of Ford means the traditional rivalry with Holden will continue into the future. Holden have brought out a new shape ZB Commodore this year with impressive results out of the gate. In a changing car market this news will be music to the ears of Supercars, with a meaningful championship locked in for the foreseeable future. “It is awesome news for the category – it shows it is still recognised by the manufacturers,” McLaughlin said. “We need to build a fast race car and I am sure that Tickford, along with our team and Ford

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’re somehow involved in a game of chicken, and it’s still unclear who is going to back down first. Of course, it will be the one who needs to be right more than they need to be smart. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Someone believes he or she is contributing to your happiness. Is that really the case? If so, perhaps reward is due in the form of appreciation. If not, it’s time to communicate your wants more clearly. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You are so empathetic today that you will echo the feelings of those around you with your own heart. It is therefore important that you work where you won’t be disturbed. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You are very important to all of this – vital, even. Inseparable, actually. The ocean is the wave, and the wave is the ocean. So don’t waste a minute doubting your relevance. Jump in and contribute. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): It’s said that it’s not the having or the getting that bring happiness, but the giving. If this is true, why is it so much fun to have and get? Anyway, you’ll experience all three today. You’ll get; you’ll have; you’ll give. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The light is different in each different place, in each moment, and so you’ll see things differently. Fortune favours you as you refrain from making statements or decisions that are absolute in nature. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): There’s a flow to all you do today. Does it really matter how this is happening? Don’t stop to analyse whether this comes from within or moves you from the outside. Just enjoy it. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): The easy way is actually the hard way. Push past the fear that makes you want to back down from the action -- from the thing that must be done to move you into who you want to be. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Beware of what looks cool but can’t deliver on its promise. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. In some cases, looking cool is important, but sooner or later the piper must be paid. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Emotions, responsibilities, relationships, possessions – all baggage. Baggage is necessary. That’s why we pack it for the journey. But the more you have, the more it weighs, the more you pay. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Following the path of least resistance is a way to get moving, but once you’re moving, you’ll want to take charge of where you’re going. Just remember that all traps have easy, juicy offerings up front. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): No improvements happen without difficulty. You pay with work or sweat. You pay with money you earned or someone earned. Today you decide what’s worth it.

But it’s everywhere, in every city and every town. And these people need your help—not only to survive, but to lift themselves out of poverty forever and live independent, happy lives. The Salvation Army helps over 120,000 Kiwis each year, working to lift them out of poverty by providing a range of short and long-term support and guidance to those in crisis. We’re committed to ending poverty in New Zealand, but we can’t do it alone. You can make a difference to those in need, because seeing poverty is not enough—we must act now.

Sometimes it’s hidden because the thousands of people living in poverty don’t want you to see it, for fear of being judged or ostracised. Other times it’s because people choose not to see it—after all, how could a country as beautiful and prosperous as New Zealand have so many people living day-to-day in poverty, often not knowing where their next meal is coming from?

Spotlight on Methven bowlers BY MATT MARKHAM

Four Methven bowlers will next week travel to the bright lights of Auckland to try and knock some of the big names off their perch to win a national title. Brent Mayson, Craig Carter, Rob Fensom and Bruce Redmond will compete in the Bowls New Zealand National Club Championships at Browns Bay in North Harbour. Just getting to that point in itself is quite the achievement, considering what has to be done to qualify for the national final. Sides first had to win their club champi-
onship, then their own district champion of champions tournament. That qualified them to head to Christchurch where they had to fend off the challenge of some of the best players in the Canterbury region and qualified them for the zone playoff where they tackled sides from Nelson, Buller, Marlborough and the West Coast. Now, just four other teams stand between them and a national title, with play taking place over two days in the middle of next week. They will start the tournament by play-

ing one of the strongest combinations, who also happen to be hometown heroes, in the North Harbour four of current Black Jack and recent Commonwealth Games attendee, Tony Grantham, who is skipping a strong quartet on their home green. They will also face sides from Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Thames and Southland over the two days of play with the highest points earner from the games declared the winner. Carter will skip the Methven four and his experience as a Canterbury representative and frequent player in some of the big tour-
naments around New Zealand will be heavily relied on, while Mayson’s tactical game is always a bonus in any situation. Fensom and Redmond are both relative newcomers to the sport but are both compiling impressive records on the greens and will do a solid job up the front of the team for both Carter and Mayson to work from. Meanwhile, 14 teams will take to the Allenton greens this weekend for the Ashburton Sub Centre triples including a side skipped by Mayson with other big names like Sandra Keith, Bruce White, Diane Gutberlet and Graeme Bishop.
