Weighbridge ‘an accident hazard’ By Sue Newman

Plans to build a heavy traffic weighbridge between the Rakaia River bridge and the State Highway One overbridge have been slammed by mayor Neil Brown. The weighbridge, planned by the NZ Transport Agency will pose a significant accident risk as vehicles are stopped and forced to turn into the weighing area. This will also cause long lines of traffic to snake back across the bridge as large vehicles leave the weighbridge and grind their way up the overbridge, Brown said. The weighbridge is planned for land

NZTA owns between the two bridges but it needs an easement from the Ashburton District Council to erect a variable messaging sign on reserve land on the south side of the bridge. At yesterday’s council meeting, Brown and his council team made it very clear that the request was one they were far from happy to grant. “There is more to this than meets the eye; it’s an inappropriate place to pull trucks in and weigh them. This (approval for the signage) is a small part of a bigger picture. If we allow this today it’s giving the green light to something that is not appropriate,” he said. Brown has discussed the weigh-

bridge location with Selwyn mayor Sam Broughton and said he was of the same view. “It’s a good idea in the wrong place. We have land in Rakaia that’s industrial land that they could use. Other options need to be explored.” NZTA will go through a Notice of Requirement (NOR) process on the proposal. This will allow public submissions with the outcome determined by an independent hearing commissioner.

From principal, to principal teacher By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

When the school bell rings at Methven Primary School in late January, principal Chris Murphy won’t be the face welcoming students to the new school year. Instead, he’ll will be taking a year out of his own school environment, instead spending that year passing his knowledge on to teachers new to the role of principal. He’ll be part of a Ministry of Education initiative that sees a support programme delivered to principals with less than two years in their leadership jobs. And it’s a role Murphy is pretty excited about, saying the ministry had identified that the first two years were the most critical for a new principal as that was the period when they were at their most vulnerable. From a selfish perspective taking the one year secondment also provided him with an opportunity to grow his own skills, he said. “This is a nice change at this stage in my career and I’ve had my eyes open for an opportunity like this for a while. It would be easy to leave the education sector but I guess I’m devoted to education and definitely see my future there.” Education was at an exciting junction in New Zealand where there were some exciting opportunities and the new position would allow him to build his own skill set for whatever that future might offer, he said. Murphy’s experience is broad ranging from a dean’s job at a large

intermediate school in Wellington, to four years at Springburn Mt Somers and eight years at Methven Primary. He moved from deputy principal to principal and even with that stepped progression in his career, taking over the principal’s role was a big step, he said. And today, at a time when there were fewer teachers coming into the industry and older principals were retiring, people were stepping into leadership roles without a huge amount of preparation, Murphy said. “It’s a whole different thing being a principal. The thing I’ve learned is that the book stuff anyone can learn, but being a principal is about relationships, it’s where you can sink or swim. The test of how good a principal is, is how they build relationships.” Across New Zealand there are 400 principals in the scheme and Murphy will be working in schools across Canterbury and Otago. His caseload involves principals of 20 schools, ranging from large secondary schools to single teacher primary schools. He will have both face-to-face contact with his principals and will work with them online. “I’m looking forward to sharing my journey with them, but one of the aspects I find both daunting and exciting is not knowing how much I know and don’t know.” During his secondment deputy principal Sue Furndorfler will step up as principal with Rosie Robinson taking on the deputy principal role.

Door closed on rule change for free running dogs By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Dog owners have failed in their bid to gain free-roaming rights for their pets in the Ashburton Business Estate. A 130 signature petition was presented to Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown requesting the council allow dogs to run off the leash in the business park. It was something they had been doing for several years, but when signs were erected, making it clear dogs were to be kept on a leash in the park, they were

not happy. By making their feelings clear through the petition, those dog owners hoped the council would change the rules. At Thursday’s council meeting councillors made it clear that would not happen. Councillor Rodger Letham asked whether all areas where dogs were exercised were signposted or was there just a blanket ruling for the district that people were supposed to be aware of. “One of the first approaches I

had was from people complaining about signs suddenly being put up prohibiting dogs off leashes. Is it our communication that’s causing the problem?,” he said. Council environmental services manager Jane Donaldson agreed that communication was at the heart of the issue. “We need to do more education so people understand that you’re not allowed dogs off the leash anywhere in a public place unless it’s a designated dog exercise area,” she said.

The council’s dog bylaw spelled this out very clearly and signs were generally only erected in areas where there had been issues with dogs, Donaldson said. “And then people see the sign and say it’s a new rule, but it’s not, it’s never been allowed.” Even in areas where dogs were allowed off leash, they still had to be under the control of their owner, she said. Some people who signed the business park petition said they used the area because it had good access for people on mo-

bility scooters, saying the town’s designated dog parks were not access friendly. Making those parks accessible for mobility scooters, however, would come with a cost and since building the dog pound, the dog control account was running in the red. The council is not due to review its dog control bylaws until 2021 but the council was not out of kilter with most other towns, some of which had pretty strict rules around dogs, Donaldson said.

Fatal crash in flood repair area By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

One person has died following a crash at an intersection in the middle of flood repairs from recent flooding from the Rangitata River. The two-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Rangitata Island Road at around 10.35pm on Wednesday evening. A St John spokesman said two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The road was closed following the crash, and re-opened at 6am on Thursday morning, New Zealand Transport Agency’s southern media manager Frances Adank said. “It was in the area which is temporarily marked as 50km/h at the Rangitata Island turnoff, following last week’s floods,” she said. “At this stage we are not aware that there was any flood-related damage to the highway surface at this particular site.” The road was closed for a number of days last week after the Rangitata River burst its banks on the south side, sending flood waters flowing through the typically dry south branch of the river.

The intersection of State Highway 1 and Rangitata Island Road was the scene of a fatal crash late on Wednesday evening. PHOTO JAIME PITT-MACKAY 191219-JPM-0003 Police were unable to confirm to the Guardian on Thursday what types of vehicles were involved or if they were related to the roadworks in the area due to the investigation into the crash being ongoing. Inspector Dave Gaskin, of Timaru, confirmed to Stuff that it

was a young man who had died in the crash. Two people were killed in a crash near the area in October last year on the Ealing side of the river. Sixty-five-year-old Helen Strang Chapman and 49-year-old Riki John Perrin died at the scene of the crash near Ealing shortly

before 1.40pm on October 15. Both were from Timaru. The crash caused one vehicle to flip in the northbound lane, and one to hit the concrete Ashburton District sign. Both Chapman and Perrin were the sole occupants of their vehicles, police advised.

Acads backs drug safety testing programmes By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton’s drug and alcohol service has welcomed a Government research project into the effectiveness of drug checking programmes held at events like music festivals. Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drugs Service general manager Chris Clark said while they do not condone people using illegal drugs, anything that might help keep people safe is a good step. “With people going to big events like that there are always going to be people taking drugs,” she said. “For people to be able to check what they have is safe is a good

step. “If it is going to stop people overdosing or taking things they are not aware of that is a good. “We don’t advise people take drugs but if you are going to, make sure you do it in as safe a way as possible.” The Ministry of Health is to fund research by a Victoria University of Wellington criminology team which will study the impact of drug testing at festivals as a potential harm reduction tool. This is the first such study in New Zealand, and will cost $59,000. “We know recreational drug use is common at music festivals, despite it being illegal,” Health Minister Dr David Clark said. “There’s no way to make ille-

gal drug use completely safe – all drugs come with risk. But we can and must reduce harm wherever possible.” Police Minister Stuart Nash says drug checking activities in New Zealand operate in a complex area with a fine line between legal and illegal behaviour. “Police support measures that will reduce drug-related harm in our communities. This does not mean police will turn a blind eye to illicit drug activities. Those dealing and supplying illicit drugs can expect to face the risk of prosecution,” he said. “Police have previously exercised discretion around prosecutions with regard to drug checking activities. Changes in

August this year affirmed the police discretion to not prosecute unless it is in the public interest. Police make these decisions independently.” “We want to balance a healthbased approach to the personal possession of illicit drugs, with the need to maintain criminal enforcement, particularly when it comes to disrupting the supply of illicit drugs.” The research will combine quantitative and qualitative assessments of the current testing regime carried out by the non-government organisation Know Your Stuff. It is designed to provide a base of evidence before ministers consider any potential next steps.

Rakaia weigh station ‘an accident hazard’ From P1 It anticipates that only 4 to 6 per cent of heavy vehicles will be pulled off the road, equating to nine or 10 an hour and peak traffic times. That number would be enough to significantly slow traffic as vehicles pulled back onto the road, Brown said. The weighbridge might not be in the Ashburton District but as guardians of the district, it was the council’s job to object to something that didn’t look right, he said. “Even though it’s not in our district, the flow-on effect will impact on us and if we agree to the sign then we just open the door.” The location between the two bridges was highly dangerous, councillor Diane Rawlinson said. “If a member of the public wanted to put something as significant as this on a state highway it would be classed as dangerous,” she said. The council was only involved in the issue because of the need for an easement over its land for signage, chief executive Hamish Riach said. “If they didn’t need that easement they wouldn’t be talking to us, but they do and they have and this creates an opportunity and an avenue to make our point,” he said. If the council refuses the easement, NZTA would have to look for another site for its sign, but point blank refusal might not be the best way to go, said councillor Angus McKay. Councillors agreed that NZTA should be notified the council was far from happy with the site and that it wanted to discuss other options.

■■MANIA-O-ROTO CAMP

In brief

Summer camp receives boost By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

More children are going to be able to take advantage of a summer camp held in Ashburton thanks to the generosity of a number of local organisations. The Scouts Summer Camp, organised by associate scout leader Phil Crozier has received around $4500 in grants to allow the programme to run, which is expecting around 30 participants aged between 10 and 13. The camp sees the children taking part in a busy week of activities based out of the Mania-o-roto scout park. The participants will visit locations all over town such as the Tinwald Pool or EA Networks Centre depending on weather, all by pedal power, cycling to each activity. Last year’s camp even included sailing and paddle boarding lessons at Lake Hood. The camp involves an overnight stay on Thursday night which includes campfire cooking and tenting. Advance Ashburton Craigs Insvestment Partners Christmas giving scheme, the Rotary Ashburton Charitable Trust, the Ashburton MSA, the Ashburton Pakeke Lions Charitable Trust, the Ashburton County Lions Charitable Trust, the Plains Rotary Charitable Trust, Altrusa and Region 2 Rural Woman Area Committee all contributed towards the camp.

For almost three years barking dogs have made Abby Woods’ life hell. She’s called the Ashburton District Council on numerous occasions to complain, dog contractors have turned up, but nothing has happened and Woods said she is at her wits end. “We have a child with cerebal palsy and who has regular seizures. Having her woken up regularly is not good and if I’ve been up all night with her I cannot sleep because of the dogs barking on and off,” she said. Woods has talked to the owner of the dogs and she’s tried to talk to council staff, but the dogs are still there and they’re still barking. The barking is not constant. It’s always worse, often going for

In announcing that Peter Garde has been nominated for the Methven Community Board, the Guardian stated he was retired. This is incorrect. Garde is currently working as a stockbroker. Currently he is the sole nomination for the sole board position. Nominations close at noon on Monday. The Guardian apologises for the mistake.

Firearm ‘explodes’ A 12-year boy has injuries to his neck and face after a firearm “exploded” while he was handling it. The incident happened on Turner Road in Ararimu, south of Auckland, about 8.30pm on Wednesday. Shortly afterwards, a Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene, which airlifted the child to hospital. “Enquiries have established that the young male was on the property handling a firearm used for hunting when it appears to have accidentally exploded while he was handling it,” Detective Senior Sergeant Veronica McPherson said. The occupants at the address were licensed firearm holders. - NZME

Barking dogs create hell for neighbours By Sue Newman

several hours, when the owner is out. It can stop for weeks at a time if someone remains on the property, but once they’re left alone they bark endlessly, she said. The dogs are on a property owned by the council and Woods suggested that could be a reason why no action has been taken, however, they did re-fence the property to provide a visual barrier for the dogs, but the barking continued, she said. “The council seems to have done everything to appease the tenant and nothing to solve the issue. I’m now so close to breaking point it’s not funny.” Council environmental services manager Jane Donaldson agreed that the issue between Woods and her neighbour over barking dogs had been a long running one. However, while there had

been many calls made about the dogs, on several occasions when the contractor arrived the dogs were quiet, she said. In terms of Woods’ suggestion that the council was favouring its tenant over her, that was “bollocks”, Donaldson said. “It doesn’t make a difference to the council or a dog control contractor. The law applies to everyone equally.” In terms of the property in question, Donaldson said the council had gone to considerable lengths as a landlord to ensure the property was fenced and screened to discourage the tenant’s dogs from barking when they saw movement on the street or next door. The council did its best to attend all dog complaints quickly but that was not always possible as they were a small team and had to respond to dog related

issues across the entire district, she said. “We want people to ring up while it’s happening, if it’s going on and on and we’ll do our best to send a contractor around, but often they arrive and find the dog has settled down.” The first step for anyone with a barking dog in the neighbourhood was to talk to the dog’s owner who might not be aware their dog was creating a problem, she said. With the summer holiday season coming up, Donaldson urged dog owners play their part in minimising the risk of their dog barking while they were away by having their dogs in care or staying with friends rather than having someone call in to feed. Dogs left without human company were always more likely to bark, she said.

Farmers’ market Christmas party on again Carters Terrace will be hosting a Christmas party and everyone is invited. On Monday afternoon from 4pm, Terrace Croft will be holding a festive market that combines the best of the Ashburton Farmers’ Market with a host of added food stalls and entertainment. The event is organised by the farmers’

market team and hosted by Terrace Croft owner Victoria Johnson and will see regulars at the market joined by stalls selling honey, cheese, Christmas lilies and a range of other Christmas style fare. A new addition to this year’s market will be the Rolling Peddler icecream sellers. Entertainment will be provided by the

Ashburton Scottish Society Pipe Band and by local singer Vicki Smith. Father Christmas will arrive at 5.30pm and a draw for a huge Christmas hamper will be held at 6pm from the hundreds of entries left after market stalls during the year. The market will run from 4pm util 7pm at 80 Carters Terrace, Tinwald.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has paid a visit to staff and patients at Middlemore Hospital which is treating many of the Whakaari/ White Island victims. Intensive care specialist Dr David Galler tweeted a photo of Ardern with himself and others in a ward at the hospital yesterday. In it he wrote how much a visit by the PM meant to the patients and staff. “The details of what we do are a mystery to most. We do good work here. It’s hard and complicated and good to share.” - NZME

Thomas faces charges Arthur Allan Thomas, the man pardoned of the infamous 1970 Crewe murders, has been charged with historical sexual offending. The 81-year-old’s case was called yesterday in the Manukau District Court where Judge Charles Blackie ordered his interim name suppression to lapse. Thomas faces four charges of indecent assault and one count of rape. The allegations are historical in nature and relate to two complainants, who have automatic name suppression, and recently came forward to police. - NZME

Indecent assault An Auckland man who indecently assaulted another tourist in the Cook Islands after entering her hotel room while she was sleeping has been senteced to jail. But he remains in the community on bail while he tries to appeal the sentence. In September 2016 Shay O’Carroll was on holiday in Rarotonga and, after an evening of drinking, let himself into the room of a fellow New Zealand tourist. The woman was asleep and woke to find O’Carroll indecently assaulting her. She told hotel management and O’Carroll was arrested and spoken to by police before being allowed to return to New Zealand. When the victim returned to NZ, she made a complaint with police and, with the leave of the Attorney-General of New Zealand and Solicitor-General of the Cook Islands, O’Carroll was charged. - NZME

Guardian sub-editor Steve Devereux has seen quite a few Christmases, and heard quite a few Christmas songs in his time. There’s some that deserve to be noted as being the best of the best, and there’s some completely at the other end of the scale.

Despite what lots of folk think of her, Mariah Carey undoubtedly has one of the finest voices going around. Her version of Oh Holy Night is simply a classic.

Special mention: Billy Idol produced a Christmas album called Happy Holidays; none of the singles make the Good List, but the whole album is quite remarkable, even for those who might not usually appreciate Billy’s talents.

Snoopy’s Christmas is a shoo-in for the Good List. Every band, ever, has produced a Christmas song, and despite them all saying they did it for fun and the Christmas spirit, they all desperately wanted to be as incredibly successful as the Royal Guardsmen. None of them are.

These are the ones who should have been run over by that errant reindeer.

Please Daddy Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas John Denver I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus Jackson Five Merry Christmas Happy Holidays NSYNC The Christmas Song David Hasselhoff

David Bowie and Bing Crosby were both absolutely iconic singers of their time. Of any time. What the hell were they thinking?

Liquidation woes for oil company By Hamish Rutherford NZME

Tamarind Taranaki was placed in liquidation at a watershed meeting with creditors yesterday morning. The company, which operates the Tui oil fields ran into debts when a drilling campaign in September went over budget and was unsuccessful. Directors warned it “may be insolvent” in early November and placed the company in voluntary administration. Malaysian-owned Tamarind Taranaki reportedly has debts of around $350 million, including a $US100 million claim from the New Zealand Government for the decommissioning costs of closing and cleaning up the fields. Tamarind’s parent company had given the Crown a guarantee to cover the decommissioning costs, but officials had warned that liquidation could meant the cost fell on taxpayers. According to a briefing from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Tui had generated $529m in royalties since 2008. Under the terms of the permit, the Crown was to effectively

pay 42 per cent of the cost of decommissioning in the form of tax and royalty rebates. Shortly before the watershed meeting, PwC was appointed receiver of Tamarind. The company was then placed in liquidation, with Borrelli Walsh, which had been acting

and its assets going forward,” Hollis said. PwC had already met with the liquidators and was due to meet with former management and directors of Tamarind Taranaki. Although he had not had time to assess the company’s position it was clear that its creditor levels were in the hundreds of millions while “the asset level, at this stage, is nowhere near that”. Creditors would almost inevitably face a loss on the amount they were owed. “I think that’s fairly certain,” Hollis said. “There is an opportunity for a longer term restructure but whether it’s this company or another company that might take these assets over at a later stage, we won’t know that until next year,” Hollis said. “My focus is really ensuring over the next few weeks that things are all under control. We’ll all get back in January and focus on the slightly bigger picture.” Jason Kardachi of liquidators Borrelli Walsh said the company was due to issue a statement late yesterday.

eflecting on 2019 during the final full trading week, sharemarkets worldwide have had an impressive year. Locally, the benchmark NZX 50 is up 28.6 per cent to date, with New Zealand’s largest listed company, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, leading the gains, surging 73.5 per cent so far this year. Domestic business sentiment also ends the year on an upbeat note, with ANZ’s business confidence survey results released on Monday this week showing headline confidence up 13 points this month, at the highest level since October 2017. The NZX 50 index had the best performance in its history this year. The strongest performing stock has been Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, rallying 73.5 per cent to $22.36 at the time of writing, with a key event from the company this year being its upgrade of earnings guidance for the 2020 financial year in October, following the clearance to sell its sleep apnoea mask in the US. The Port of Tauranga and Ryman Healthcare also had a strong year, up 47.8 per cent to $7.50 and 47.2 per cent to $15.85 respectively. Meanwhile, Sky TV plummeted, losing 60 per cent to date. February was the worst month for the Pay TV provider, where the company released its disappointing interim results for the 2019 financial year. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) cut the official cash rate (OCR) to record low levels. The OCR started 2019 at an al-

Jeremy Flood ON THE MARKETS

ready record low of 1.75 per cent, and the domestic market was surprised to see two subsequent rate cuts. The RBNZ announced in its May monetary policy meeting that the official cash rate was to be cut by 25 basis points to 1.50 per cent. However, the biggest shock to investors was the 50 basis points cut in August, making the OCR 1.0 per cent. This move wasn’t expected by the market, but the RBNZ deemed the cut necessary to continue to meet its employment and inflation objectives. Across the ditch, markets have also rallied. Australia’s ASX 200 is up 21.3 per cent to date, with all sectors higher so far this year. The healthcare sector has led the gains, with the sector 46.4 per cent higher at the time of writing. The index’s largest company, Commonwealth Bank, has risen 13.5 per cent to date to $82.13. Other large Australian companies CSL Limited and BHP Group also have had a strong year to date, with CSL rising 54.3 per cent to $285.78 and BHP up 16.8 per cent to $39.99. Trump’s ongoing trade war has finally reached a phase one deal. The trade war between the US and China has taken much of the

markets’ attention internationally this year. The first significant fall as a result of trade war news was in August, when China halted the purchases of US agricultural products. The S&P 500 lost 3 per cent on August 5 following the announcement. However, Wall Street has bounced back to touch record highs on all key indices in December after the announcement of a phase one trade deal. Key stocks on Wall Street had a stellar year. The largest listed company in the US, Apple, rallied this year to $279.74 at the time of writing, an increase of 77.3 per cent. The second largest company on Wall Street, Microsoft, has gained 52 per cent to $154.4, with the technology company hitting a market cap of $1 trillion in June this year. UK sees the light at the end of the 2019 tunnel. UK markets faced turbulent political times this year, with Brexit weighing on investor sentiment. Despite this, the UK’s benchmark FTSE 100 index is up 12.1 per cent to date. The decisive election result in December showed the pound rebounding strongly, now sitting at £0.50 against the New Zealand dollar, 19.8 per cent higher than the 25-year average of £0.41. Distinctive show; standout go T wo four-door high-performance sports cars are poised to swell the ranks of BMW M GmbH models in the luxury segment. The new BMW M8 Gran Coupe blend their standout performance attributes with distinctive body design and increased space for rear-seat passengers. They therefore represent an exclusive opportunity for a driver and passengers in four full-size seats to sample the signature dynamism, agility and precision offered by the new range-topping BMW M GmbH models. The new four-door high-performance models are derived directly from the new BMW M8 Coupe and were developed alongside the BMW M8 GTE endurance racer. Their powertrain, chassis and aerodynamics were adapted to suit the standalone concept underpinning them in intensive testing on the BMW Group’s proving grounds, the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit and other race tracks. The hallmark power delivery of BMW M engines is one of the calling cards of the V8 fitted in the new BMW M8 Gran Coupe. The high-revving eight-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology develops maximum output of 441 kW/600 hp and as much as 460 kW/625 hp in the new BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe, and teams up with a sports exhaust system and eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. The new BMW M8 Gran Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 seconds, the new BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe in 3.2 seconds.

The M xDrive system has a rear-biased configuration in its default 4WD mode. Drivers can then use the Setup menu to select 4WD Sport mode, which sends an even higher proportion of drive to the rear wheels. And deactivating DSC brings 2WD mode into play, with drive fed exclusively through the rear wheels. The design and responses of the model-specific chassis technology have been prompted by the particular demands of track use, likewise the extremely stiff mountings connecting the suspension to the body. Standard specification includes electronically controlled dampers and electromechanical M Servotronic steering. In its M-specific configuration, the new integrated braking system enables two different brake pedal settings. Among the ingredients in the extravagant appearance of the four-door high-performance sports cars are their dynamically stretched silhouette, muscular shoulders and standalone rear-end design. Large air intakes, M gills on the side panels, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors, a rear spoiler and other M-specific features provide a visual showcase for the high-performance character of the new models. A Setup button on the centre console gives the driver direct access to the settings for the engine, dampers, steering, M xDrive and braking system. Two individually composed variants of the M Setup can be stored and called up using the M buttons on the steering wheel.

A Packard in the hood Bernard Egan MOTORING

T

he fabulous images of the stylish Packard which featured in last week’s motoring pages prompted some memories. Gordon and Una Binsted and their family were our neighbours in Happy Hampstead when this writer was growing up. And before you say or think it this writer freely admits that’s a work in progress! And actually it’s not quite true, the Binsted family was over the back fence. They were our neighbours, but it wasn’t really even over the back fence, because we took it down, so there wasn’t one. Because of the alignment of the sections the actual boundary wasn’t all that wide and without the obstacle of a fence we – that’s the Binsted kids and us – were able to wander freely between our homes. Which we did quite often, enjoying wonderful times. Gordon was, of course, a renowned local photographer who provided many illustrations for this newspaper and has left an invaluable and incredible legacy to our district in the form of a collection of his photographs. Photographs of huge historical significance, which the family have kindly donated to the Ashburton Museum. Maybe by now you’re wondering what this has got to do with Packards. Answer: Gordon and Una had one. And as a young person becoming interested in cars it seemed quite special because it appeared large, luxurious and powerful. All of which it was. And of course its name was unusual. The Packard was a great family car and this writer recalls several trips – which seemed fast at the time and probably were – going on photographic expeditions. Chances are there was need to get back quickly and develop photos in time to meet deadlines. A bit different to these days! Packards bear the surname of two American brothers who were pioneers of vehicle manufacture. They founded the Packard Motor Company after deciding they could produce excellent cars. And they did just that, along the way introducing many innovative features. During World War Two, Packard engines powered various military machines, including a motor built under licence to Rolls-Royce and similar to the Merlin 66, used as the power plant in the legendary P-51D Mustang. These days American presidential vehicles are a far cry from the limos of yesteryear.

Season’s Greetings Various people in various ways make it possible to produce our Motoring pages. We thank you all and we wish you safe and happy times at Christmas and in the New Year.

Roger, Bernard, Neil and Steve The Guardian Motoring Team.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, or FDR as he was known to his friends – well actually pretty much to everyone – did some of his campaigning in a very large open Packard. They were also the car of choice for other presidents, dignitaries and celebrities. Beginning in 1899, Packard continued production until 1956 and during that time built some amazing and now collectable cars. We know of at least one locally owned Packard, so as well as reviving childhood memories last week’s story is a prompt to follow up on that in the New Year. And there are other fascinating tales to follow next year too. One being the connection between Jim Lischner’s family and the Todd family, who from humble beginnings in Otago went on to become major players in the New Zealand automobile industry before moving into other activities. In part the special anniversary recently celebrated by our paper prompted Jim to mention the Todd story to us. There are similarities between the histories of the Todd family and the Ashburton Guardian. In a classic case of telephone tag we haven’t quite managed to connect with Jim to confirm the words prepared for that story, but hopefully we’ll do so soon. While this writer hasn’t managed to speak with Jim he has had the pleasure of hearing him. That was when Jim and his fellow band members provided delightful easy listening entertainment during the recent very successful Hospice Christmas Houses tour. There are other stories lined up for the New Year. So we’ll be back! This time last year Noel Lowe told us he had asked Father Christmas for a book. A book called We had One of Those 2. He told Santa, a.k.a. Audrey, he would like a copy because it included images of an Austin A40 Devon. Noel’s first car was an Austin A40 Devon.

Noel must have been a good boy during 2018 because the book arrived for him under the Lowe’s Christmas tree. And no doubt Noel has been a good boy again this year and we hope he’ll be appropriately rewarded. During this year courtesy of Derek Wilson we have been recipients of editions of South Island Formula Ford Newsletter. Derek is a committee member of this very active organisation and their interesting and informative newsletters indicate Formula Ford racing in which competitors drive high spec great looking racers is very much alive and well. The cars are seriously fast. These pages are the last pre-Christmas

Franklin D. Roosevelt used a Packard for his presidential vehicle.

motoring section of our paper for 2019. It only seems like yesterday the last column for last year went to print. The time in between has passed quickly – about as fast as one of those fabulous Formula Ford cars crossing the finishing line. But in the process, the old adage “time flies when you’re having fun” has again proved correct. Thanks to everyone involved; we’ve had lots of fun producing motoring pages this year and are looking forward to more fun in 2020.

The calm before the storm: Formula Fords line up on the starting grid.

OUR VIEW

More to do than meets the eye S

omeone once said that there’s not much for kids to do here in Ashburton. I don’t know who they were. But they clearly can’t be looking far or widely enough, because there’s plenty happening to keep the young ones in our community entertained, especially at this time of the year. On Wednesday night I was lucky enough to get to head along to the Santa Hunt at the Ashburton Museum. What an excellent initiative from the team there and it was so good to see so many youngsters and their families running around such an awesome space and having fun. That activity might only be a flash in the pan event, but there’s another six events for the young-

sters of this district, and further afield, at the museum over the next four weeks and, if Wednesday night was anything to go by, then they’ll be just as worth attending as the Santa Hunt was. The museum is just one place of course. When you sit down and break it all down and look at all the different things that kids can do around the entire Ashburton

District, most would be surprised at the results. Sure, we don’t have a tenpin bowling alley, nor do our pools have a hydroslide. Generations of children have grown up in this district with a community swimming pool, which no longer stands, and it never had a hydroslide either, but everyone survived. Instead, now there is a world class facility available, that not only caters for swimming, but can be used to shoot some hoops or kick an indoor soccer ball around in. Add to the mix the plethora of biking tracks around the place, the multitude of sporting possibilities plus some remarkable outdoor open spaces in which to make the most of one’s time and

you can certainly say that no one should be left short. There’s a bit of a problem with society today in this regard because there’s almost an expectation that things will just be done because someone asks for them. Had a hydroslide been included in the initial plans for the EA Networks Pool, for most its novelty would have worn off by now and it would largely sit unused. There’s not enough practical thinking happening when it comes to entertainment because of these expectations and it’s something which might be quite alarming for the years to come. We should be thankful for what we have and make the most of what is already here. Sure, it’s nice to get the new

flash and shiny things that come along every now and then and we most certainly make the most of them when they do arrive. But, just like a good restaurant, after going six or seven times it often starts to feel a little bit of the same and you begin to yearn for something different and all of a sudden, you’re back to where you started and looking for the next best thing to land in your lap. Why not set yourself a challenge these holidays if you’ve got children, or grandchildren. Challenge them to find as many things as possible that they could do to help enjoy the holidays and then get out there and make the most of them. Chances are you’ll be surprised at what you might find.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Friday, December 20, the 354th day of 2019. There are 11 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On December 20, 1803, the Louisiana Purchase was completed as ownership of the territory was formally transferred from France to the United States. On this date: In 1832, New Zealand’s first cricket match at a mission school at Paihia in the Bay of Islands In 1860, South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union as all 169 delegates to a special convention in Charleston voted in favour of separation. In 1893, just over three weeks after the landmark November 28 general election in which New Zealand women became the first in the world to vote in a national parliamentary election, voting was held in the four Māori electorates, with women voting in the Māori seats for first time. In 1913, The Great Strike of 1913, which had begun in late October in New Zealand, finally ended. In 1924, Adolf Hitler was released from prison after serving nine months for his role in the Beer Hall Putsch. In 1963, the Berlin Wall was opened for the first time to West Berliners, who were allowed one-day visits to relatives in the Eastern sector for the holidays. In 1987, more than 4300 people were killed when the Dona Paz, a Philippine passenger ship, collided with the tanker Vector off Mindoro island. In 1989, the United States launched Operation Just Cause, sending troops into Panama to topple the government of Gen Manuel Noriega. In 1995, an American Airlines Boeing 757 en route to Cali, Colombia, slammed into a mountain, killing all but four of the 163 people aboard. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, NATO began its peacekeeping mission,

How did that happen?

I

think Maddison Hooper just had the best weekend of her life so far. On Sunday she turned three whole years old. We celebrated on Saturday afternoon and into the evening – well into the evening in fact! And due to the later than planned evening celebrations, the Saturday birthday party decorations were still all up on Sunday morning when Miss Maddy got up. “It’s party day,” she shrieked with joy, again! You are still getting over the turning three bit eh? Boy those three years have just flown by. Maddy has turned into the coolest wee kid. She has the best personality. She has a great sense of humour but plenty of sass to balance that with. I love going home to her, hearing the door open and her yelling with such joy in her voice, “Daddy’s home, Mummy, Daddy’s home”. This is usually followed up with a big cuddle, a kiss and a hongi. Sometimes she must think to herself that she has been dishing those out too frequently and she makes me work hard for them. I have to beg and follow up with some fake tears, until she gives in with a big grin and gives me a cuddle, with pats on the back, saying “it’s OK Daddy, don’t be sad”. She has well and truly got her head around presents now and loved every minute of opening them all up on Saturday. She

was more than happy not only to thank the giver of the present but dish out a big hug for them as well. It was a neat afternoon with some quality family time. Manda organised a nice afternoon tea which included her famous lolly cake. It was a big day all round for Miss 3 as we were up and at them pretty early in the morning, squeezing in a swimming lesson while Mum did some sandwich making. That meant she was off to bed nice and early and the adults could continue the birthday celebrations. I have never been overly good at showing my emotions, although since having kids, I can end up blubbering at the stupidest things, even TV commercials set me off. I’m not one to laugh a lot, it’s not that I don’t find stuff funny, but for whatever reason it takes a fair bit to get me going. But when I do lose it, I REALLY lose it. And that happened on Saturday night. The catalyst was the game Speak Out, you know the one where you put the plastic guard in your gob that forces your lips open. Then you have to read out sayings or phrases, that your partner must guess. Watching one of my brothers-in-law get the giggles while playing got me started and then, for some reason, another of the bros-in-law decided to have a drink with the guard in, that

finished me off. Of course drinking with your lips forced apart is pretty much impossible and most of it ends up down one’s front. My ribs were aching! Roll on Christmas, not only for the absolute joy of watching Maddy open her pressies but for the possibility of another Speak Out session with the family. Thanks so much for putting up with my ramblings in this paper for another year.

YOUR VIEW Fuel prices I was in Christchurch on Sunday and noticed the same thing as far as prices are concerned. As Mr Wallington said, prices were always 4¢ cheaper in Christchurch, so why are our local petrol stations fleecing us? We are encouraged to shop locally but obviously if visiting Christchurch wait to fill up there ... more money out of the town. Shame!!! Helen Eccleston

Laking deels it up to them

PHOTO MATT MARKHAM

When Jason Laking asked Take The Deel (centre) for an effort with 250 metres left to run in the third race at yesterday’s Ashburton Racing Club meeting, the resulting outcome was almost instant. Because almost as quickly as the Ashburton-based jockey al-

lowed his charge a little more rein, the Brian Court-trained galloper exploded into full stride and cruised past his rivals to go on and take the win by an impressive two and a quarter lengths at the line. Given a good run near the speed just off the back of race favour-

ite, Danny Green, Take The Deel turned the race from an interesting two-horse battle at the top of the straight into a one-horse affair. A four-year-old gelding by Dundeel, Take The Deel is raced by trainer Court’s ownership group, Courtco Racing Limit-

ed, along with well known harness racing identities Cran and Chrissie Dalgety along with Billy Bourke, Peter Kearney, Scott and Anna Letton, Mike Walcott and Peter Joseph. Yesterday’s success was the first of his career from just six starts, with a second early in his career

his best result prior to the victory. The win brought up 10 wins for the season for Laking, who’s in good form at the moment and will be looking forward to a busy summer racing campaign which will see him travelling across the South Island in search of more success.

In brief Kiwi-bred scores in HK Highly Proactive, who raced as The Last Won in New Zealand, brought up his first win on Wednesday night since arriving in Hong Kong earlier this year. The four-year-old son of Coats Choice shrugged off inexperience and a wide passage to take the Class 3 Venus Handicap (1200m) by three quarters of a length at only his third Hong Kong start. The Francis Lui-trained gelding arrived with a record of two from two in New Zealand when trained by Sabin Kirkland. - NZME

Chocante back on track Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh is happy with comeback galloper Chocante but has no expectation of a winning return in the Kamada Park Manawatu Challenge Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni tomorrow. The Group One performer strained a tendon in the Listed Tails Stakes (1600m) at Doomben in April last year and was given a long rehabilitation period. - NZME

Bary camp confident Hastings trainer John Bary would have preferred another week of conditioning under Callsign Mav’s belt heading into tomorrow’s Rich Hill Stud Premier 3YO at Awapuni but expects his charge to be competitive nonetheless. The Atlante gelding has already shown his class with two wins in his five starts, including a second placing to gun three-year-old Catalyst. - NZME

Summer singing school now in session By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

If you’re on your way past the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week, keep an ear out for the hard-working vocal chords of 149 Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School (MCSSS) students. The group launched into a week of practice yesterday before they bring a musical theatre production to the stage on Friday and Saturday. It’s the biggest production yet for the MCSSS, which has been operating each January for 18 years and is musically helmed by Ashburton singing tutor Jo Castelow. “We now have people from all over, from as far as Timaru and Christchurch, and each time brings a new mix of voices,” said Castelow. Some singers have been involved in the week-long course for more than 10 years, she said,

while more than half of this year’s junior group are newcomers. The group range in age from 9 to 21 years and includes members of NAZDA and first-year university students. This year’s production is themed Time Travellers and will cover musical theatre and tunes from across the ages – from My Fair Lady and Bing Crosby to recent hits like Hamilton and Moana, along with everything in between, Castelow said. “Among the juniors everyone knows the songs from Moana, but they find that they love singing the older ones just as much,” she said. And not only does the theme provide something for everyone in the audience, she said, but gives the young singers the opportunity to learn about various musicals. The group received their music a month ago, and auditioned for solo positions on unSunday. They are currently un dergoing two days of musical

A number of older buildings around the Ashburton District will shortly be sporting signs that spell out how they rank against new building standards. As part of the on-going drive to ensure all buildings will be earthquake safe, the Ashburton District Council will be sending signs to owners of buildings built prior to 1976 and will be asking them to display those signs prominently on the outside of their property. The public notification is part of the council’s drive to ensure every older building has been inspected by engineers and that where required, strengthen-

ing work is either carried out or planned in the future. It’s been a long process getting to this point, council building services manager Michael Wong said, but the placard templates had now arrived and these would be sent to property owners over the next month. The placards would serve a two fold purpose – making the public aware of a building’s compliance level and encouraging owners to carry out necessary strengthening work. Wong anticipates there will be about 150 sent out in February to owners of non-compliant buildings. “These are the building’s we’ve

already assessed. Then we’ll do another desk top review and pick up the ones we may have missed and we’ll work with them,” he said. Buildings that have not been assessed will be given the lowest rating until an assessment is done, Wong said. There had been a proposal to change the rules so the cut-off date for engineering assessment would have moved forward to cover all buildings built before 2004 and that would have seen hundreds of buildings around the district bearing stickers, he said. The consultation process ensured there was no date change

and that dramatically reduced the number of buildings coming into the net locally. If a building is required to have THE a placard displayed it will contain information on the percentage it complies with building standards and the year with which it will need to be strengthened to come up to code, Wong said. Older buildings that have been assessed and found to be up to strength or that have already been strengthened will not need to display placards. Details on the placard-bearing buildings will be held on a public register with the Ministry of Building and this is accessible to anyone.

Honesty boxes targeted From P1 Near Methven, Lucy Raisbeck’s free range egg stall was also burgled on Sunday night. While taking out the bins yesterday morning, she said she noticed that the security camera had been taken and the padlock had been cut off from her honesty box. All money had been cleared from the box before the theft, but Raisbeck said she was still gutted to discover the break-in, which she presumes is the work of people “who don’t care about other people”. However, with new security methods for Raisbeck and an ultra-secure honesty box for Billie, both stalls are continuing to operate.

Te Araroa walkers are on the rise, benefiting the summer tourism industry in Methven. Many who do the 3000-kilometre trail, which runs the length of New Zealand, end up in the ski town, as it is a natural resting point near the uncrossable Rakaia River. Methven i-SITE consultant Lyndsay Agnew said December to February was peak season for trail walkers, and she was assisting about half a dozen per week. “Most of them are doing the whole trail or the whole South Island, depending on how much time they have got,” she said. “They are really interesting people, you have to be a certain breed to want to go and walk 3000 kilometres.” They mostly came from Europe and North America, and walked north to south, hitch-hiking into Methven from above Lake Coleridge. They generally stayed in the campground or backpacker lodges in Methven. “It’s nice to have them here and they spread the word when they go back,” she said. Walkers rejoin the trail on Blackford Road in the Rakaia Gorge, and Methven Travel provides transport on the “empty” section of its school bus run, and operates an on-demand shuttle service in school holidays. The Te Araroa section through Mid Canterbury goes from here to the Hakatere Heron Road, taking a public access easement over Glenariffe Station, then crossing the 60,000-hectare Hakatere Conservation Park. Among those undertaking Te Araroa is American Clayton Beckett. His trail name is Chef, he has a travel blog at chefspecial5.com and is from Connecticut. The 26-year-old is walking the South Island section, south to north, and was in Methven at the weekend. He said he ended up staying two nights instead of one at Snow Denn Lodge because he needed the rest, and the fact it of-

fered a Hikers’ Special made it all the more attractive. “My feet were pretty banged up, so I decided to hang out for just one more day,” Beckett said. He flew into Auckland in midDecember, and had his cellphone stolen in his first two days. He flew to Queenstown and shuttled to the southern end of Te Araroa at Bluff, and walked 555 kilometres north to Twizel over the next fortnight, staying in high country huts and his tent. With last week’s storm system forecast he decided to skip the next section and he

hitchhiked to Methven, and left at the weekend aiming to hitch to north of Lake Coleridge to resume the trail. Beckett said the trail to date had had many river crossings, and some mountainous terrain, as well as farm tracks and dirt roads. Besides the road walks, which he did not like as they lacked the wilderness appeal of true trail walking, and a lack of markers in some areas, he was enjoying the scenery and meeting lots of people. Of the few fellow hikers he had met, most were walking north to

south. “A lot of Kiwis don’t even know about the trail,” Beckett said. He was not worried about being without a cellphone. “If you don’t have service it’s not going to help you and you are not going to get that in the mountains,” he said. He was confident enough from previous trail walking in Chile and America not to worry about an emergency locator beacon. In the 12 months to July last year, 550 people walked the full length from Cape Reinga to Bluff,

compared to 350 in 201 and 210 the year before. Te Araroa Trust chairma vid McGregor said the trail, takes five months to com and officially opened in 201 attracting people from all w life. “From students and youn ple taking a gap year to r and workers taking an ext holiday. “It’s a great way to conne New Zealand and to really know the landscapes, peop climate,” McGregor said.

Warriors deny big money deal

Foster confirms his team All Blacks head coach Ian Foster has confirmed the bulk of his All Blacks coaching team. Foster will be joined by Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree, former All Black and Maori All Black and Ireland scrum coach Greg Feek, with former All Black Scott McLeod also continuing in his defence role in the All Blacks coaching team. Plumtree will look after the forwards in the new coaching set-up alongside Feek who will be scrum coach. The coaches have been appointed for a two-year period. One more coach will be announced in due course. Former All Black Grant Fox will continue as a selector for the

2020 season alongside Foster and Plumtree. “They’re all outstanding coaches in their own right, and we’ll have new voices and fresh ideas in the All Blacks, which will be really stimulating for everyone, and help us grow as we enter a new era,” Foster said. Incoming New Zealand Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson added: “When Ian was appointed to the head coach job, we were all impressed by the collective strength of the team that he’d assembled. “It’s a combination of youth and experience, with both international and New Zealand experience, and they’ll bring new ideas to the playing group, which is exciting for the future.”

The Warriors have confirmed they are chasing highly rated Storm forward Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, but say stories about a done deal are extremely premature. It was reported earlier this week that the Auckland club had agreed terms with the 19-year-old, who only made his NRL debut in July. But Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan said no contracts have been signed, and suggestions that the 110kg, 1.97m giant has already agreed to join the club are a “complete fallacy”. “He is a player that we are interested in and he would be a great addition to our roster,” O’Sullivan said. “But a lot of factors go into these kind of decisions and nothing is confirmed at all. There’s a process that Tino has to go through and Tino he has some deFa’asumamaleaui cisions to make.” O’Sullivan confirmed the Warriors have a long term deal on the table for Fa’asuamaleaui, and said he would “extend that term if he could”. He wouldn’t discuss monetary details, but said Fa’asuamaleaui has been offered a deal “appropriate” to his value. The Storm would like to retain him, but won’t have the space in the salary cap to compete with the offers that have come in from several clubs, including the Warriors and the Titans. However it’s unlikely the Melbourne club would offer the Samoan representative an early release, which means he would only be available from the 2021 season onwards for any new club. O’Sullivan has been tracking Fa’asuamaleaui for the last few years, ever since he saw him performing for the Sunshine Coast Falcons in the Queensland Cup. He was also a standout for the Queensland Under-20 side, as well as the Junior Kangaroos against the Kiwis in October.

‘A little whoopsie on the harbour’ All is not so smooth on the water for Team New Zealand after a training mishap in Auckland yesterday. The Emirates Team New Zealand Twitter account posted an image of their first AC75 for the 2021 America’s Cup on its side. “A little whoopsie on the Waitemata, upright again and all OK. All part of learning...,” the Tweet said. The crew has been hard at work over the past few weeks learning the ways of the radical new vessel as they look for areas to improve on for their second boat, flying over the Waitemata Harbour on its foils. The current vessel, named Te Aihe, won’t be the one they sail come the 2021 America’s Cup, but has generated plenty of interest given the radical design. “We’re under no illusions that if we were to race the America’s Cup in the exact boat we’ve got on the water now, then we wouldn’t be too competitive,” Team NZ designer Dan Bernasconi said in late September. “There’s not a huge window, which is why it’s a pretty big advantage for us to be on the water ahead of the British and the Italians, because their window is rapidly disappearing.” The AC75 is a complex vessel, with a number of mechanical and hydraulic systems needed to work together for the boat to stay on its foils. The defenders of the Auld Mug worked in simulations as their first 75-foot foiling monohull was being built, but didn’t waste any time in putting it through its pacTeam New Zealand’s AC75 in an embarrassing pose on the Waitemata Harbour yesterday. es once the vessel was launched.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Maybe you’re tired of the way things are and the situation is causing you pain. Or maybe you’re inspired by a glittering example of who you want to be. Either way, be determined to create something different. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Alas, love is not always, as the classic song suggests, a “many-splendoured thing.” Although, with the Venus change, you’ll get a new perspective on whatever bothers you about it, and things will start to shift. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): There’s high value in lighthearted relationships. When your spirit feels heavy and the weather inside your head goes grey, people who are easy to be around are like a breeze blowing away the clouds. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): There will always be a question to answer, a broken thing to fix. However, these do not always fall under your jurisdiction. Involvement is optional. Practice the art of doing nothing at all. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): To see the world how it is, you must be able to take off the filters and rules you’ve superimposed. Don’t worry; you can put your own reality glasses back on after you’re done. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Thinking of others is akin to running a street-cleaning vehicle through the avenues of your mind. It brushes your synapses clean and makes all the rest of your thinking flow better. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You want to take part in a scene; you don’t want to take it over. This is the message you need to convey subtly with your tone and, of course, your actions. Once they understand you, all will relax. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): There’s a paradox in wanting, as want motivates you while also limiting you. Desire enslaves. Maybe you can’t reason your way out of wanting, but you can and should question why. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Unsure where another person stands, you may be tempted to send mixed messages in an attempt to see what resonates. Risk rejection. Ask a direct question. Opt for the clear. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Symmetry is satisfying not just in aesthetics but in all things. Put money in; get the same value out. Talk as much as you listen, etc. Today’s symmetrical features may not be immediately detectable. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): To moralise things like food or spending opens a complicated psychology. No one is “bad” for eating a cookie or “good” for saving a buck. Explore new mindsets and styles of self-talk. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Maybe there are no magic bullets or miracle lifehacks, but looking for them and trying new things will be a great deal of fun anyway, especially when your expectations are realistic.

NATIONAL CHAMP

Mid Canterbury has a new national champion walking in it’s midst and in a continuation of a meteoric rise for the district in a minority sport, it was the sport golf croquet where we’ve produced once again. Logan McCorkindale, who is a member of the Waireka Croquet Club here in Ashburton, returned home from the New Zealand Golf Croquet Championships last week in Auckland a winner – adding his name to a long list of players to have achieved the feat over the past 20 years.

And he had to do it the hard way too. In a stand-out field of 22 players, it was McCorkindale who emerged at the top of the pile after 13 intense games over the course of the championship. And in a fitting result, considering this district’s standing in the sport he had to beat another local to claim the title – Edmund Fordyce. Play started with 10 best-of -three matches during the qualifying stages with the 22 players split up into two sections.

McCorkindale snuck through with eight wins from his 10 matches, while Fordyce and Chris Spittal, also from Mid Canterbury, worked through to the next stage in the other section with seven wins each. Spittal took down North Island champion, Hamish McIntosh in one quarter-final 7-4, 7-2 while Fordyce, who was the defending champion, took three sets to win his quarter-final.

McCorkindale had to fight hard for his spot in the semi-final, winning 7-5, 6-7, 7-4. In the semi-finals, Fordyce grabbed his spot in the final with a 7-6, 7-5 victory while McCorkindale was victorious over Spittal, winning 7-3, 7-4. The final between the two clubmates was a best of five games match-up and all five of the matches were needed to get a result.

Fordyce won the first 7-3, but McCorkindale came back to take the next two 7-4, 7-4 to be on the verge of his maiden nationals crown. However, as he did when he won the World Under 21 crown early this year, Fordyce fought back in the fourth to win 7-6 and force a fifth and deciding game. McCorkindale prevailed 7-5 in that one however, winning the match 3-2.
