A crazy, surreal experience W
ith an outgoing, vibrant and full of life approach to each and every day, the prospect of two weeks stuck in a hotel room in Auckland was never going to sit well with Laura Bagrie. But it was a situation the 20-year-old found herself faced with earlier this month when she jumped off a plane at Auckland Airport having returned from Ireland during the middle of a global pandemic. Late last year, Bagrie packed her bags and set off for Ireland, but a change in personal circumstances meant the former Ashburton College student had little other option than to come home. The fly in the ointment? Covid-19 and its impact on international travel. “It wasn’t the best timing to be fair,” Bagrie laughed. “I decided near the end of April that I wanted to come home, but it wasn’t quite as simple as just booking a flight and getting onto a plane. “I was told to expect up to three or four weeks delay before a flight would become available and it was about that long before it happened.” Wanting nothing more than to be back on the family farm near Winchmore and have the comfort of family and friends and a countless list of pets around her, Bagrie set off on the flight from the other side of the world. It had its perks, entire rows to herself and an endless supply of food and drink being supplied by air hostesses made travel a lot easier, but the prospect of the pending two-week isolation period upon her arrival in New Zealand made her a little anxious. A stop-over in Sydney put a bit of a black mark on the trip too. “Australia handled it badly. We had a 12-hour stop-over in Australia. It was a disaster. “They weren’t letting people stay at the airport for more than eight hours, so we were shipped off on a bus to a hotel for the time we were there. “We got three hours at the hotel and spent a total of four hours on the bus, It was pretty disappointing.” Auckland, however received a much more glowing report. “They were great, nice and friendly and helpful to us all, there was about 55 of us on the flight over from Sydney and it was a far more pleasurable experience.” Off the plane and back on New Zealand soil, Bagrie explained the process of getting from the airport to the hotel for her two weeks of isolation. “It was literally, get off the plane, go
Mid Canterbury’s Laura Bagrie shares her experience of the process of disembarking a flight at Auckland Airport and entering an enforced two weeks of isolation following an international flight. Her experience was a lot more by-the-book than some of the stories that have emerged over the past few days. Guardian Editor, Matt Markham, talked to her about her experience.
Laura Bagrie was happy to get home and reunite with dog, Eli after two weeks in isolation in Auckland. PHOTO SUPPLIED The hotel, the Crowne Plaza, isn’t exactly living in the suburbs – but usually it’s most enjoyable when it’s only a short stay and you’re not confined to that one room for pretty much an entire fortnight. “The room was pretty amazing to be honest, it had everything you’d need, but the novelty of it wore off pretty quickly.” Left to her own devices, Bagrie was tasked with entertaining herself during her time in isolation.
through the gates where you had your temperature checked and to see whether you had any symptoms. “Then they took you to get your bags and it was pretty quickly on the bus to be taken to the hotel.” Further checks were undertaken by Police and a nurse upon arrival at the hotel before Bagrie was shipped off to what would become home for the next two weeks.

“I tried to keep busy to start off with, doing workouts and a bit of drawing helped fill in the time. “We were able to order things like Uber Eats and have them delivered, and I did an online grocery shop, but there wasn’t an awful lot to do to pass the time.” Those in isolation were allowed to apply to get some time out of the room through a walk, something Bagrie only undertook once during her stay. After registering, she was met down at reception by a group of around 10 others who had done the same and they were marched by a guard at the front and one at the back to a small courtyard. “It was a pretty small area, you walked in the gate and they shut it behind you and there were guards all around it, there were a couple of park benches and I just sat down on one, I didn’t really fancy walking around in a circle.” The fresh air experience was an hour from start to finish and once completed it was back to the room – something akin to a prison regime for those looking from the outside in. A week in and Bagrie said things started to get on top of her and the four walls that were containing her seemed all that much smaller, while the countdown to heading back to Ashburton seemed to take forever. Aviation Security were in regular contact leading to her departure from the hotel, wanting to know all the details from how she was getting to the airport, how long she’d be there and what her process was for getting back home once she landed in Christchurch. “They wanted to know everything, but it was a bit of a relief to get on that plane and get back to Christchurch and get home.” Bagrie returned to Ashburton last week and said that the feeling of being able to head out when she wanted and to spend time outside with her animals and be around family was something she appreciated even more now than ever. “It was a pretty crazy experience to go through, but there’s nothing quite like getting home to some home-cooked food and the company of family, that’s for sure.”

■■PRESBYTERIAN SUPPORT
A big thank-you to our volunteers By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
It is time to break out the love and gratitude at Presbyterian Support, which is preparing for Volunteer Week this coming week. Area manager Suz Hutchinson said there were about 13 volunteers involved with the organisation across its various services. “Our volunteers do an amazing job for us, and we couldn’t be the service we are without their support,” Hutchinson said. “We really value their time, and often they come with a lot of expertise as well, and a lot of life experience, and their passion and enthusiasm is just outstanding.” There are about 13 volunteers across the various services at the organisation, which include Budget Advice, Family Works parenting programmes and counselling, Enliven which supports older people in their homes, a curtain bank, firewood supply, and HomeShare. The latter is currently expanding, looking for more volunteers to use their own homes to host older people in small groups, providing companionship and activities. Team members at Presbyterian Support were busy yesterday cutting hearts out of coloured paper, which they were to write messages on thanking the volunteers, and then display them in windows at the organisation’s Tancred Street headquarters for the week. Right – Presbyterian Support Ashburton representatives (from left) community family worker Gemma Whiting, student counsellor Kezia Rosie, counsellor Deborah Hay, volunteer co-ordinator Candice Gibb and youth coach Tony Vainerere show their love and gratitude to the organisation’s volunteers. Competing visions for i-SITE building’s future By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Finding a new owner for Ashburton’s i-SITE is proving to be a long and drawn-out process. Its owner the Ashburton District Council decided to sell the empty building earlier this year. It called for registrations of interest. A handful were lodged and future owners were believed to be narrowed down to just two. But deciding which of those

should win the right to hoist the building from its East Street site and give it a new life in a new site, appears to be proving a challenge. Discussions are continuing with both parties, council chief executive Hamish Riach said. Additional information has been provided to both and the council is now waiting for one or both parties to make a firm offer. One of the bidders is the Mid
Canterbury Aero Club and president Ian Begbie is keeping his fingers crossed his team wins the bidding war. If it’s successful the i-SITE will have a new life as the club’s headquarters, replacing the existing club house that is at the end of its life. Begbie said the club had provided all the information the council had requested and he believes a decision on the building’s new owner will be made shortly.
The club plans to use the i-SITE building to replace its ageing club house and if it’s given the green light, then there’ll be a quick demolition, a new concrete slab laid and the replacement building moved on to the site. The other contender is the Trotts Garden Charitable Trust team. If the i-SITE building finds its new home on the Racecourse Road property it will have a community use, says trust chairman
Gary Haskett. “We have a vision for a use that will benefit the whole community and we have a lot of things happening in the background,” he said. “The i-SITE building fits nicely into what we see for the gardens.” Haskett said his team had discussed their plans with council and will make another presentation where it would spell out its plans, he said.

Crochet rugs a labour of love By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Wet weather late this week has proved to be good timing for Ashburton’s Trevor Gamblin. The Ashburton Horticultural Society president is a keen gardener, but when it rains he will swap his trowel for a crochet hook. And with plenty of crocheting to complete, he had been beginning to wonder just when the recent dry spell would end. “The few jobs I have had, I have said: ‘We will do it when we get rain’, and in the finish I had to do them without the rain,” Gamblin said. Among the most important of these jobs has been completing his eleventh crochet square rug, destined for one of his great grandsons. Gamblin first of all makes 460 small crochet squares, and then joins them all together. “I’m in the process of joining one up at the moment, but I really need peace and quiet to lay them out, I don’t want two together that are the same.” Gamblin learned to crochet way back in the late 1960s, when he was headmaster at Rokeby School. It was when senior room girls were taking instruction in the craft from a television programme, and he managed to pick it up, more or less teaching himself.
Trevor Gamblin fits in crochet with his other passion of gardening. It takes about 20 minutes to compete each crochet square, therefore completing the 460 required for each rug adds up to 153 hours. On top of that it takes him about four hours to join together each of the 23 rows, adding another 92 hours, meaning a total of 245 hours, or six weeks full-time labour.
Gamblin takes more time than this as he designs each rug for specific family members. He finds too many hours in a row leads to sore fingers and tired eyes, so he fits his craft in around other jobs, particularly his other favourite hobby of gardening. “Through the summer I don’t do much,” he said.
And this summer as a dry spell went on longer and longer, he wondered if he would ever get back to his large collection of colourful wool and crochet hooks. He made sure he did anyway, and with the recent wet weather he has found he has had more time to put the finishing touches to his latest creation.
Ashburton Mayor lines up for a pay cut By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton mayor Neil Brown has been handed a pay cut – and he couldn’t be happier. Until the end of the year, he and his fellow mayors across New Zealand will be working for less in a show of solidarity for their fellow Kiwis, and as part of the country’s response to the Covid-19 driven economic slump. But to take those salary cuts, the organisation responsible for elected member pay, the Remu-
neration Authority, had to give the go-ahead. That’s now happened and elected members paid more than $100,000 a year, will, from July 9, lose a slice of their pay cheque. This is done on a sliding scale, with the most highly paid losing a greater share. For Brown, whose salary from July 1 increases to $121,500, the salary sacrifice will be around $6000. He is the only elected member of council who will lose pay, although some councillors
have opted to donate a portion of their council pay to charity. It was good that a blanket decision had been made on mayoral salary sacrifices rather than leaving it to mayors to donate a slice of their salary as they chose, Brown said. “It’s a decision I’m happy with because we all make donations but we don’t really talk about those.” Prior to announcing the mayoral pay cuts, Brown said the authority had surveyed mayors ask-

ing for details of any donations they had made from the start of the Covid-19 Level 4 lockdown through to the start of Level 1. Brown had made several, including the Methven Skatepark and a Hospice Mid Canterbury fundraiser. The amount carved off city mayors is much higher, with Christchurch City mayor Lianne Dalziel losing 15 per cent – $14,625 – of her salary. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s pay will be cut by $47,000.
■■POLICE SHOOTING
‘A shocking situation’ The death of an officer in Auckland means it is a devastating day for the police community, says Police Commissioner Andrew Coster. The police officer died in a shooting after what is being described as a routine traffic stop in the West Auckland suburb of Massey yesterday morning. A large manhunt is under way for the offender, who also shot another police officer and struck a member of the public while fleeing the scene in a car. The incident saw several schools and pre-schools in Massey locked down while police and other emergency services descended on the suburb. Coster confirmed the police officer’s death at a media briefing in Wellington yesterday. He described the death as shocking and said it was a terrible day. The second police officer shot in the incident has serious leg injuries and the member of the public is believed to have minor injuries. “This is a shocking situation, this is the worst news police and their families can receive. “The incident points to the real risk our officers face as they go about their jobs every day. Staff safety and welfare are our absolute priority and our whole organisation is in a state of shock as a result of this event.” At about 10.30am, a police unit performed a routine traffic stop on Reynella Drive and there was nothing to suggest it would be anything out of the ordinary, Coster said. He said the police in Auckland will be armed while the hunt is on for the offender who fled the scene. There was also a second person in the offender’s vehicle, Coster said. Thirty-two police have been killed in the line of duty up until today. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the death of the police officer was devastating news.

Sharing shed operational By Jaime Pitt-MacKay

Plans to beautify new ground
Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Members of the Rakaia community have come together to help provide a platform for sharing and caring amongst the town’s community. A community sharing shed has been constructed and established in the town with a simple message. “Take what you need, leave what you can and donate what you are able.” The idea was first proposed by a local woman who has asked not to be named, and with material donated by Goldpine and Pluck’s Engineering, the shed was put together by a local man. “It was an idea that I thought would be helpful in the community,” she said. People can either leave monetary donations which will be used to contribute food to the shed, or food can be left as donations, with people asked to take only what they need, and to leave what they can. The shed is located off Elizabeth Street between the council flats and St Mary’s Church, which was chosen for its easy access for all those in the community. The money is removed from the donation box along with the padlock each night to reduce the risk of vandalism. The shed has only been in place for a couple of days, but is said to be working well so far.

KidzMethven committee members are holding a mass planting day this Sunday at the Methven Skate Park. KidzMethven chair Liz McMillan, said community members are welcome to head to the park from 11am, weather permitting. McMillan suggested helpers bring a spade and gumboots, as it’s going to be muddy, she said. Thanks to a $450 donation from Gerard and Ann-Marie McCloy’s 2019 Hot Rod and Classic Car Show and Methven Hammer Hardware’s generosity, KidzMethven have gathered up weed mat and over 300 grasses to plant on the north-western bank. “People are welcome to bring along their own grasses from home if they want to as well,” McMillan said. The day will finish off with a barbecue and a look around the park. The official opening date will be announced later in the month, before that McMillan said the final fencing around the park will be put up and any outstanding concrete work will be cleaned up. “Methven Lions provided the funds for the fencing, which will be put up next week.” Sunday’s date was chosen as it is World Skateboarding Day. A days-of-the-year website points out the many health benefits of skateboarding. Burning calories is an obvious one, but core muscles in legs and torso also get a workout, and stress relief is another plus. “Why slave away in the gym when there is a skate park close by?” they said.
■■ASHBURTON DISTRICT COURT
Two men plead guilty to separate assaults Two men pleaded guilty to assault charges in the Ashburton District Court on Friday. Ngatokoa Teata appeared on a charge of assault in a family relationship and intentional damage, but after a resolution was reached between his counsel Gretchen Hart and the police prosecutor, the charges were amended to assault, and the intentional damage charge was withdrawn. He pleaded guilty to the single charge of assault. The summary of facts read to the court indicated there had been a dispute between Teata and his now former partner over the transfer of $50 on September 6 last year. He assaulted her by pulling her off a bed, and also pushing her to the floor, with the victim suffering bruising to her left arm. The matter was referred to Restorative Justice, with Teata set to appear for sentencing on August 10.
Lawrence Wharepapa also appeared initially on a charge of assault in a family relationship, which after a resolution was reached, was amended to a single charge of assault. He also pleaded guilty. On February 22 of this year Wharepapa got into an argument with his partner of 11 years, and opted to leave. When leaving with the complainant’s suitcase, the comlainant told Wharepapa to stop, at which point he threw the suitcase on the ground. He also placed both hands on the chest of the complainant, and pushed her to the ground. She suffered no injuries as a result of the assault. Wharepapa was remanded on bail for sentencing on August 24, and the matter was also referred to Restorative Justice.

Covid-19 committee signs off By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
It’s served them well for 11 weeks, but a decision-making committee formed at the start of the Covid-19 Level 4 lockdown has run its course. And on Thursday Ashburton’s district councillors opted to disband the Covid-19 response committee that has met weekly since March 25, by Zoom and for the last
three weeks, face-to-face. It’s a disbanding that came with a few regrets, with councillor Diane Rawlinson suggesting the weekly meetings had brought councillors closer as a team. The weekly meetings allowed councillors to deal with issues in a more timely way and the smaller agenda ensured there was better debate on fewer issues, John
Falloon said. “The shorter meetings have been advantageous and council has worked better over the last two or three months. “It’s been a grand experiment,” he said. The weekly meetings may have shown councillors a new way of doing things, Liz McMillan said. The council will return to
its normal cycle of standing committee and council meetings from next week, but there would be an opportunity to review the way things were done at the end of the current council’s first year, in September, chief executive Hamish Riach said. That would give councillors an opportunity to decide whether weekly meetings were a better option, he said.
In brief No new Covid-19 cases Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield says there have been no new cases of Covid-19 after a ramping up of testing in the past day. The number of active cases remains at three. Dr Bloomfield said there were 6273 tests carried out on Thursday and the higher number reflected testing in the community and extensive testing of people in the wide net of the latest cases and isolation. “In that context, it is very reassuring that we have no further cases of Covid-19 to report.” Dr Bloomfield said between June 9 and June 16, 55 people were granted leave on compassionate grounds. The vast majority have been tested and returned a negative result. “It’s important to emphasise that anyone who departs a facility on compassionate grounds does so under a very strict set of criteria.” He said the Ministry of Health was following up with 401 people in regards to the two women who tested positive on 16 June after travelling to Wellington, and 174 of them had returned negative results.
More closures, 85 jobs lost More than 80 people will lose their jobs when South Island department store chain H&J Smith closes its Dunedin stores. It previously confirmed it would shut its Te Anau and Balclutha stores, downsize its Gore one and close Outdoor World at Remarkables Park in Queenstown. About 60 jobs are expected to be cut by the initial closures, with another 85 gone in the latest announcement. The Meridian Mall department store and the Armoury store will close in January next year. Managing director Jason Smith said they had been working to finalise terms with the Dunedin mall owners and managers, and received the necessary documents late on Thursday to firm up closing dates.
Shore leave ban stays Cargo ship crew arriving in Auckland from overseas ports are being told to stay on board their vessel to prevent the potential spread of Covid-19. Ports of Auckland banned general shore leave for all seafarers arriving in the city when the country went into lockdown. Under official rules for Alert Level 1, crews at sea for more than 14 days who have not declared illness are allowed to disembark with no health checks required. But port spokesperson Matt Ball said this was too risky and it had asked the Ministry of Health for an assurance health checks will be made. Ball said about 10 cargo ships per week arrived in Auckland, each with up to 20 crew on board, and in the last week there had been several cases of crew members arriving and reporting illness.
Man admits syndicate role A Chilean national has admitted his role in an international drug syndicate that imported over a tonne of illegal drugs. Hugo Alarcon Ramos pleaded guilty to 12 drug and firearms charges via audiovisual link from Mt Eden Prison in the High Court at Auckland yesterday. Alarcon Ramos was one of 10 people arrested in February at the end of the eight-month long investigation Operation Mystic which targeted the importation of drugs into New Zealand. Yesterday he admitted importing 20 kilograms of methamphetamine as well as 26kg and 50,000 pills of MDMA into Auckland, between August 2017 and November 2019. He also admitted selling and possessing illegal drugs for supply, possessing materials for the manufacture of methamphetamine, and unlawfully possessing a military style firearm. Ramos, who was supported by his wife, sister and pastor in court, will be sentenced on 18 August. The drug syndicate is alleged to have imported over a tonne of methamphetamine, MDMA, cocaine and ephedrine into the country over three years.

Wheeling books to the housebound By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Books on Wheels is a community service that just keeps growing. It’s been an Ashburton Library project since 2002 when a joint venture was established with the Altrusa Club of Ashburton to deliver books to housebound library members. It was an instant hit and 18 years later, in the post Covid-19 environment it has seen a surge in membership – 21 new sign-ons in just one week. While the library has a long list of regular users, library manager Jill Watson said staff had called 185 of its older book borrowers in the Ashburton area who had not visited the library since the lockdown ended to see if they wanted to join the delivery scheme. The response was huge and the fortnightly book round is now busier than ever. But there are always plenty of Altrusa members ready and willing to help out, Joan Lawn said. On her Thursday round she delivered a bag of talking books to regular client Jean
Edwards and made a firsttime delivery to Daphne Petrovic, a library member for more than 20 years. For the past two years, Daphne said she had struggled to visit the library after breaking her femur. Walking with a cane and carrying a bag of books was simply too difficult, she said. “That slowed me down a bit but this is a wonderful service. It’s marvellous and it means us older people are not left behind. We’re very well catered for in Ashburton,” she said. Her favourite books are biographies, autobiographies and her favourite subjects, travel and history. Most weeks she reads at least three books and said that means she’s constantly learning. Between reading and being an avid watcher of the History channel, Daphne said she feels she keeps up to speed with what’s happening around the world and in her district. Anyone interested in joining up to the Books on Wheels service should contact the Ashburton Library, phone 308-7192 or email adclib@adc.govt.nz

■■WORLD REFUGEE DAY
Ashburton a safe haven By Kathy Harrington-Watt
Refugee Settlement Support Service
Today is World Refugee Day! A day to applaud and recognise the courage, resilience, strength and determination of women, men and children who have been forced to leave their homelands due to the threat of persecution, conflict and violence. Although we are yet to know when the refugees will be arriving in Ashburton it is a good time to remind ourselves of the plight of refugees around the globe. Currently there are 25.9 million refugees and over half of them are under 18. While we are patiently waiting for the Covid-19 border restrictions to be lifted, and our refugees to finally arrive, it is important to remember that there are millions of refugee families hoping for a chance to settle somewhere safe, where they
can bring up their children to live productive and fulfilling lives. New Zealand and Ashburton will be one of those places and we look forward to welcoming the families when they finally arrive. To mark World Refugee Day the school children of Ashburton created some amazing posters that commented on Ashburton as a place the new families will feel welcome, safe, and enjoy all it has to offer. The winning poster can be seen in window displays around Ashburton. The posters will be on display at the Ashburton library for another week and then move to the Museum and EA Networks over the next few weeks. They are full of heart-warming images and messages, Ashburton should be very proud.

A widespread police operation across the Canterbury region saw 50 people arrested and extra police brought in to carry out enquiries in Mid Canterbury. Operation Prodigy was a two-day police operation focusing on crime reduction across the district. Ashburton sub-area supervisor senior sergeant Leigh Jenkins said three staff were brought in from the Christchurch metro area to work with local staff on outstanding warrants for arrest and for people who were wanted to interview. Across Canterbury 43 arrest warrants were executed and 15 search warrants were conducted. Jenkins said more than 70 cannabis plants had been located alongside growing equipment, cash, stolen cars and a grenade. A number of people have been charged with a range of offences including dishonesty, drug possession, burglary, firearm possession, and family harm, however Jenkins said he was not aware of any arrests being made in the Ashburton District in relation to the operation. Beach enhancement a plan for the future By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
It might come with a $65,000 price tag, but an enhancement project planned for Ashton Beach could see the Ashburton District become a positive bio-diversity example for the rest of New Zealand, says district councillor Angus McKay. The plan has been through public consultation and discussions have been held with user and environmental groups. Councillors visited the site last week and on Thursday agreed on a development option that would provide numerous wins for the community. The plan includes fully fencing several areas to protect indigenous vegetation and to minimise safety risks for people riding or driving vehicles in the area. They also agreed to support further work and consultation that would allow the establishment of an alternative area for recreational motorbike riding.
It was important the council got this project right as this would be a project for the future, something that would be enjoyed for generations to come, McKay said. The project does not come without additional costs in terms of protecting both a vulnerable tussock, writing a management plan for a grass skink population and then possibly relocating the skinks. This could come with an all-up price tag of $35,000. The new motorbike riding area would also need to be marked with health and safety signage and additional fencing. Mayor Neil Brown challenged the need to capture and relocate skinks living in the area “I support this, but $20,000 on a lizard management plan? We’d be better to spend this money on making their habitat safe rather than writing a report. It’s bureaucracy gone mad. And that doesn’t

include the $15,000 it’ll cost for the lizard salvage,” he said. Rodger Letham agreed. “We’re getting into the realms of, dare I say it, stupidity. Do what’s required under health and safety and let Mother Nature do her thing.” Councillor Lynette Lovett said the project was a fantastic one for the district. “We need to look outside the square and going forward we have a real gem here,” she said. The project wasn’t yet a done deal said council people and capability advisor Sarah Mosely, as stakeholders needed to be consulted and the motorbike club needed to prepare a plan for the new riding area. “It’s a turning point. Once we get this information we’ll see if we can join things together.” In preparing costs, Mosely said she had opted for the worst case scenario so there were no surprises further down the track.
Driver sought By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Police are urging members of the public to come forward with any sightings of a dark coloured SUV-style vehicle following a three-vehicle crash on Thursday night. The crash occurred at the intersection of River Terrace and Walker Street at around 5.43pm. Two vehicles remained at the scene, however the dark coloured SUV-style vehicle did not. Minor injuries were suffered in the crash. Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said police request information from any witnesses to the event, or that may have knowledge that could assist their enquiry into the incident. If you were the driver, or you have any information about the collision, please call police on 105 and quote event number P042620072. The area was a busy one for crashes on Thursday, with two vehicles involved in a minor crash at the intersection of Park Street and Short Street at around 3pm. There were no injuries resulting from the crash, however one vehicle had to be towed from the scene.

■■TOURISM DAMAGE
Recession to hit south hardest The southern regions will be the most adversely affected by the severe economic recession, while Wellington and Auckland have the best prospects for recovery, a Westpac report is predicting. Westpac Bank’s regional roundup says all areas of New Zealand are facing a rough recession over the rest of the year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, but those that rely most on international tourism, such as Otago, are likely to be particularly hard hit. Construction activity was expected to continue to slow, while house prices were expected to fall in all parts of the country. Wellington had the brightest outlook, supported by an increase in government spending on services. “The opening of public offices previously closed during the lockdown period and the return of public sector workers to their workplaces should also support retail spending, particularly in Wellington’s CBD,” the report says. While Auckland had been hardest hit by the Covid-19 virus, it was
Tourists are in short supply in some of our hotspots. set to recover faster than the rest of the country, with a broad-based economy and relatively low exposure to adverse global economic conditions. “Auckland will experience a severe recession over coming quarters before posting a recovery,” it says. “Regions that are heavy on agriculture, forestry, and export manufacturing are also going to
feel the effects of the global recession,” the report says. “Our expectation is that dairy, sheep and beef will be relatively resilient, while viticulture and forestry will struggle.” The rise of the digital economic, which had been boosted during the prolonged lockdown, was expected to drive economic growth in Auckland and Wellington. “The best prospects for recovery
lie in urban industries like services, distribution, and digital technology,” the report says. “ICT, software development, and online service providers have had a real leg up, and we think that bodes relatively well for Wellington and Auckland.” An increase in online shopping was expected to boost the economies of distribution hubs, such as Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North and Christchurch. Regions most exposed to international tourism were all in the South Island so they would recover more slowly, Westpac chief economist Dominick Stephens said. Queenstown mayor Jim Boult said unemployment in his area could reach 20 per cent, if nothing was done to try to recover more quickly. “Supplementary wage is soon to cease for many people and I think a lot of people who think they’ve got a job are going to find out they haven’t got a job following this.” The school holidays would be
the real signal of which companies were still in business. “The 20 per cent figure is if we don’t try to to anything about it,” he said. The region had set up taskforces to help recovery focusing on job creation and trying to attract events to the area. A trans-Tasman bubble was much needed, but he feared the date would be put back. “Having Australians here would make a difference between businesses failing and people losing their jobs.” Boult said New Zealanders usually made up about half the ski season visitors and with the season starting next week he was hoping more will come to the region this year. “We’re doing everything we can to make awareness of Queenstown and Wanaka as a destination for Kiwis travelling. “The place is absolutely stunning at the present point in time and if anybody had any concerns about overcrowding I can tell you we don’t have that.”

■■TURNERS
Revenue flat; profit down Vehicle retailer and finance group Turners Automotive has reported a small drop in profit due to a slowdown in sales in the last six weeks of the year because of Covid-19. Its profit for the year ended March was down 10 per cent on last year’s to just over $20 million. Revenue was flat at around $333m. The company also pointed out that the 2019 earnings had benefited from a $3.4m one-off sale and a lower tax rate. Prior to the pandemic the company was tracking to beat its previously issued earnings forecast of around $30m. Chief executive Todd Hunter said considering the sudden blow to revenue during February and March he was pleased with the result and was optimistic about the coming year. “We are now focused on the opportunities to grow this business. “We have been successful in reducing costs through rental relief, government wage subsidies, staff reducing work hours and using annual leave balances, travel and other expenditures,” he said.
“The used car market has shown considerable resilience in previous downturns and early indications are supporting this theme. “We know customers will be more likely to trade with businesses who have a strong brand and reputation like Turners and we believe this is the time to build market share.” While auto finance profits were down on last year, the company’s finance, insurance and credit management businesses held up, including the unexpected bonus of clients paying down debt. “One thing we didn’t expect was the improvement in arrears, so around half the improvement in arrears is due to people making more payments as a result of their discretionary income levels going up over the lockdown.” In April the business saw a 57 per cent drop in revenue compared to the year prior, however Mr Hunter said recovery in May had been swift and he was optimistic about the coming year’s performance. “At beginning of lockdown we modelled out three scenarios – worst, likely and best – pleasingly we are thus far tracking above the best case.”

of local characters, blending timeless elegance and vintage pieces with all the expected mod-cons. The Barbara Weldon Room is a saucy little heart-stealer. During the restoration, workers discovered sawdust in the wall linings, a primitive form of sound-proofing. Dancing girls were employed to “dance” with the miners – although Barbara’s room took it to a horizontal level. Across the road, a cluster of authentic cottages and the Old Bank of New Zealand have been transformed into accommodation suites and rooms, including the ravishing Seddon Suite. Richard John Seddon was a regular at the hotel, taking to the stage and singing. It’s a show-stopping hotel. In the very deep south, cross Foveaux Strait on the one hour ferry from Bluff to pint-sized Oban on Stewart Island. The iconic South Sea Hotel anchors Oban, enjoying a dress-circle perch overlooking the seductive curve of Halfmoon Bay, just a two-minute doddle from the ferry terminal. Needless to say, the establishment’s mojo has been rekindled with the shift to Level 2, the island’s social hub is pulsing with
vitality once again. Complementing the fully licensed restaurant and bar, the South Sea offers modern studio units in addition to the original hotel rooms. It’s Kiwi classic, where retired travellers, perky millennials and grizzled fishermen all converge. Salute proceedings with a Roaring Forties Golden Ale. If you know your Otago gold rush history, the mighty Maniototo’s northernmost settlement of Kyeburn Diggings is now largely a ghost town with one notable exception – the sole gold rush survivor, Dansey’s Pass Coach Inn. Offering hearty fare, boutique accommodation and a superb bar packed with curios, the back-of-beyond frontier charm is unmistakable. The long and low-slung hotel, first built in 1862, still beckons like a roadside refuge. As you’d expect with such an atmospheric inn, open wood fires, wooden floors and exposed beams feature prominently in the lounge and dining rooms. Accommodations are elegantly furnished and magnificently appointed with plenty of heritage elements, like wooden joinery, brass fittings and copper piping.

Another of the West Coast’s historic pubs, this time Kumara’s Theatre Royal Hotel. This historic coach inn is an alpine treasure, accentuating the raw drama of a dalliance with Dansey’s Pass and the Kakanui Mountains. They’re offering some great winter deals. Central Otago is spoilt when it comes to heritage pubs, and another striking Maniototo ghost town boasts a soul-stirring hospitality treasure, the Vulcan Hotel. From SH85, turn off onto the lonely looping gravel road to reach St. Bathans. At last count, there are only six living inhabitants left – but no shortage of reported ghosts. Stay the night at the irresistible Vulcan Hotel, the only surviving pub in St. Bathans and one of the oldest mud brick adobe buildings left standing in New Zealand. Room 1 is apparently home to “The Rose”, who was strangled in the pub in 1880. Some guests vow and declare they felt grabbed and held down in the night – particularly male guests. Nocturnal visitations included? You never know your luck. It’s movie-set-perfect good
looks have made the award-winning Cardrona Hotel a perennial Instagram darling. Situated in the Cardrona Valley, many Crown Range travellers, zipping between Queenstown and Wanaka, will breeze by this 1863 sweetheart, fleetingly stopping for a photo-op with its famous façade before rushing on. Don’t sell yourself short, it’s a cracker place to spend a night. Echoes of the gold-rush proudly ring from its rafters, while the en-suite accommodations are top-notch. There’s an expansive heritage garden, roaring open fires, a hot tub and superb dining. You might plump for the blue cod, gourmet burgers, hearty soups and stew – but be sure to sample their cult-like signatures – their fried chicken and frickles, Canadian-style crumbed and deepfried dill pickles. Bliss! The menu does a fine job in highlighting locally sourced products from Cardrona Valley honey and locally grown venison and lamb, to the gourmet cheeses and Cardrona Pinot Noir.
The town of Ross, on the West Coast, boasts the colourful Historic Empire Hotel.

The town at the bottom of a great mountain N
estled at the bottom of the Southern Alps, looked over by the majestic Mt Hutt above it, you’ll find a small township abuzz in the winter months and an almost sleep-like state during the warmer parts of the year. A tourist destination for sure, thanks to the success of the internationally-renowned skifield that sits above it, less than an hour’s drive from the town centre, Methven is one of those places that you get a sense of the true form of New Zealand from the moment you drive past the town’s boundary. It’s a petite little place, nowhere near being out of date though and full of friendly locals, traditional Kiwi folk who are warm and inviting. Perhaps it’s because they’re used to it. For five months of each year they open their doors and welcome an increase in population that sees the township double its normal size with staff for the mountain flooding in to call the township home and tourists from all over flocking to check out what it’s all about. With more than a dozen cafes, restaurants and other eating establishments, there’s something for everyone and while the mountain plays a pivotal role in bringing people to the area, the town is not a one-trick pony. There’s walking, cycling, archery, clay bird shooting, Lord of the Rings site tours, 4WD touring, jetboating, fishing, hunting and horse trekking along the picturesque
nearby Rakaia River. Founded in 1869 by Robert Patton, Methven was named after the town in which the Scotsman hailed from. When the settlers first arrived the area was an open tussock-covered plain, exposed to the elements.
Maori settlers dubbed the town Piwakawaka after the famous New Zealand fantail, although some locals will refute that is actually the case. It’s also the home of Rajah, New Zealand’s first police dog. His statue sits proudly near the doorstep of the Mt Hutt War Memorial
Hall, staking his claim as one of the town’s most popular identities in its history. Inside the walls of that building sits the perfect experience for people to understand the strong rural background of the district, as well as the mountain experience in the New Zealand Alpine and Agricultural Encounter. With the promise of exciting things on the horizon, with work having begun on the Opuke Hot Pools complex on the edge of the township, there’s an exciting future ahead for the little town at the bottom of a great mountain and with the prospect of a year-round reason to visit the area, things are only going to get better.

Facebook pulls Trump adverts RNZ Facebook has removed ads from Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign that featured imagery the social network says violates its policy banning “organised hate”. The Trump ads in question blasted “Dangerous MOBS of far-left groups,” which it claimed are “running through our streets and causing absolute mayhem”. The ads featured an upside-down triangle, which anti-hate groups said was strikingly similar to notorious Nazi symbols denoting political prisoners in World War Two concentration camps. “We removed these posts and ads for violating our policy against organised hate,” a Facebook spokesperson confirmed to Variety. “Our policy prohibits using a banned hate group’s symbol to identify political prisoners without the context that condemns or discusses the symbol.” The Trump ads on Facebook also called on his followers to
President Donald Trump looks at his phone during a recent meeting. PHOTO AP “stand with your President and declare ANTIFA a Terrorist Organisation”. Progressive watchdog group Media Matters called out the Trump 2020 ads on Twitter, claiming the president’s campaign ran 88 individual ads on Facebook with the inverted red triangle – which it said was “an infa-
mous Nazi symbol”. In response, the Trump campaign said that the down-pointing red triangle is an emoji and “a symbol widely used by Antifa”. The Trump campaign also said it is not included in the Anti-Defamation League’s Hate Symbols Database. Anti-Defamation League
chief executive Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement on Twitter that Nazis used “red triangles to identify their political victims in concentration camps. Using it to attack political opponents is highly offensive. POTUS’ campaign needs to learn its history, as ignorance is no excuse for using Nazi-related symbols”. Earlier this month, Facebook employees spoke out against the tech giant’s decision not to remove or flag a controversial post by Trump relating to the protests across the US over the death in police custody of African American George Floyd. The president posted a comment on the social network saying that he would “send in the National Guard” and warned that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts”. But Facebook said it did not violate its company policy. Trump had tweeted the same comments, and Twitter had placed a warning over the content, which it said “glorified violence”.
Australia under increasing cyberattack - PM AP Australia is under increasing cyberattack from a “sophisticated state-based cyber actor,” the Australian prime minister said yesterday. Prime Minister Scott Morrison would not name the state, and he said he made the growing threat public to raise awareness. “Australian organisations are currently being targeted by a sophisticated state-based cyber actor,” Morrison told reporters. “This activity is targeting Australian organisations across a range of sectors, including all levels of government, industry, political organisations, education, health, essential service providers and operators of other critical infrastructure,”
he added. Although the threat was constant, the frequency of attacks had increased “over many months”. “This is the actions of a statebased actor with significant capabilities. There aren’t too many state-based actors who have those capabilities,” Morrison said. Morrison said he particularly wanted organisations involved in health, critical infrastructure and essential services to bolster technical defences to thwart such malicious attacks. Defense Minister Linda Reynolds said the government’s cyber agency, Australian Cyber Security Center, and the Home Affairs Department had published on Friday a technical advisory on how organisations
can detect and mitigate cyber threats. Morrison would not comment on the inevitable speculation that the cyberattacks were part of Australia’s increasingly hostile rift with China. China in recent weeks banned beef exports from Australia’s largest abattoirs, ended trade in Australian barley with a tariff wall and warned its citizens against visiting Australia. The measures are widely interpreted as punishment for Australia’s advocacy of an independent probe into the origins and spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Australia’s foreign minister this week accused China of using the anxiety around the pandemic to undermine Western democracies by spreading dis-
information online, prompting China to accuse Australia of disinformation. Morrison said “Australia doesn’t engage lightly in public attribution” and would not name the country behind the current cyber campaign. “I can’t control what speculation others might engage in on this issue,” he said. Morrison said he had discussed the growing cyber security threat with Australia’s allies and had spoken to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the subject. Australian investigations to date had not uncovered any “large-scale personal data breaches,” Morrison said. Australian cyber security authorities had “thwarted many attacks”, he said.
Eilish gets restraining order A judge has extended to three years a restraining order taken out by Billie Eilish against a man who repeatedly appeared at her Los Angeles home. In a hearing, Superior Court Judge Dianna Gould-Saltman agreed to the extension of the May 11 order preventing 24-yearold Prenell Rousseau of New York from attempting to contact or coming within 91 metres of the 18-year-old pop star or her parents. Eilish, her attorney and her parents phoned in to the hearing, held in an empty courtroom. The order also prohibits Rousseau from assaulting or harassing the family, or from coming near Eilish’s workplaces.
Games in hall of fame The World Video Game Hall of Fame inducted Bejeweled, Centipede, King’s Quest and Minecraft in a virtual ceremony that recognised their influence on the industry and the gamers who have spent tens of billions of hours playing them. The hall of fame’s Class of 2020 was chosen from a field of 12 finalists that also included Frogger, Goldeneye 007, Guitar Hero, NBA Jam, Nokia Snake, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Uncharted 2, and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Atari’s Centipede is credited with bringing more female players into arcades when it debuted in 1981.
‘Forces’ Sweetheart’ Dame Vera Lynn dies AP
Dame Vera Lynn
Dame Vera Lynn, the endearingly popular “Forces’ Sweetheart” who serenaded British troops during World War Two, has died at 103. During the war and long after, Lynn got crowds singing, smiling and crying with sentimental favourites such as We’ll Meet Again, and The White Cliffs of Dover. “The family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers at the age of 103, her family said in a statement.
“Dame Vera Lynn, who lived in Ditchling, East Sussex, passed away earlier today, 18 June 2020, surrounded by her close family.” Lynn possessed a downto-earth appeal, reminding servicemen of the wives and sweethearts they left behind when they went off to war. “I was somebody that they could associate with,” she once told The Associated Press. “I was an ordinary girl.” Tributes poured in from political leaders, entertainers, veterans and thousands of fans. Prime Minister Boris Johnson
said her “charm and magical voice entranced and uplifted our country in some of our darkest hours. Her voice will live on to lift the hearts of generations to come”. Lynn hosted a wildly popular BBC radio show during the war called Sincerely Yours in which she sent messages to British troops abroad and performed the songs they requested. The half-hour programme came on during the highly coveted slot following the Sunday night news. “Winston Churchill was my opening act,” she once said.
Anne Hegerty on bullying The Chase star Anne Hegerty has opened up about her experiences of being bullied as a child. While now she’s known across the UK as one of the country’s finest minds, Anne suffered at school from bullies who saw her as “an obvious target”. Anne was diagnosed with Asperger’s in her 40s. The National Autistic Society says “people with Asperger syndrome see, hear and feel the world differently to other people”. “My mother couldn’t understand anything about me ... why I wasn’t more sociable and popular and good with people,” she said. Anne added that school became a tough experience for her: “I got bullied a fair bit, because I was just a very obvious target.”

Reborn When Jill May’s much loved silk tree died several years ago she found out, via Mr Google, that it wasn’t wise to plant another one in the same spot. Jill found something she loves just as much but in a different way. And, no more leaves/flowers to sweep up here either.

Domain plan needs your input
O
ne of the positives to come out of the Covid-19 lockdown is an extension of time for community to comment on the Ashburton Domain development plan. That plan’s been around for a few years now, lying on a shelf gathering dust, but earlier this year its time appeared to have come. It resurfaced, submissions were called and then along came Covid-19 and it went back on the shelf, but like the proverbial phoenix, the plan is now back on the desk, back out for public comment. Prior to lockdown more than 100 people had voiced opinions on the changes planned for what’s often described as one of our great treasures. Not all comments were supportive. Some said the council had gone too far, others said not far enough. The chance to have your say is out there now until July 5. It’s important to take a bit of time to look at the plan, and it’s important to have your say. The domain has been around for more than 100 years and much has changed to meet modern needs. That’s why there’s no longer a dirt bottom swimming pool near the Ashburton Hospital boundary, why the grass tennis courts on the West Street boundary long lawn have gone. But not everything has to change. The domain’s bowling greens have been in place for more than 100 years. The plan includes their relocation. Why? Tagging that area as a central hub is no excuse; there’s plenty of space in the same corner to create the domain’s heart and the bowling greens should be part of that. There’s strong support for the greens to stay, but more is needed. If you want hands-off the historic bowling greens, don’t just nod your head, put pen to paper, fingers to keyboard and let the council know. Moving the greens achieves nothing for the future, but paying a little more attention to the ideas proposed at a forum by the district’s students might. Those ideas showed what the next generation of users want and if the domain is to remain relevant we can’t ignore what they say.

Quarantine breakdown RNZ
T
he anger and frustration at New Zealand’s border quarantine failure have been palpable and calling on the defence force shows how deeply bureaucracy has failed the nation. Two women, recently arrived in New Zealand, were granted compassionate leave from quarantine to be with grieving family after a parent’s death. But they were not tested for Covid-19 before being allowed to travel the length of the North Island by car. Both later tested positive. Since news of the failure broke, other examples of mismanagement and claims of an overly relaxed quarantine regime have emerged. Having endured lockdown and now nursing an ailing economy back to life, the “team of 5 million” has not been forgiving. Nor has Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who directed her director-general of health to immediately suspend compassionate exemptions for anyone in quarantine. The fact she has also called in the military to oversee quarantine facilities and strengthen border control speaks volumes. The deployment of our armed forces was always an option during the emergency. The government wisely chose
not to do so in any highly visible way. Now it’s different. But rather than being a move against non-compliant New Zealand citizens or visitors to the country, it’s a last resort in response to the failed bureaucracy that allowed the mistakes to happen. Legal uncertainty is not to blame While the specific point of breakdown in the chain of command governing quarantine management has yet to be pinpointed, one thing is beyond doubt: this is not a matter of legal uncertainties. The powers of the government in times of infectious and notifiable disease are vast under the Health Act. With the paramount goal of protecting public health, the obligation to direct people for medical examination and contact tracing is clear. If there was any doubt about those existing powers during the Covid-19 crisis, two other pieces of legislation cleared it up. First, specific laws were introduced with the Immigration (Covid-19 Response) Amendment Act. This gave the government additional powers to add conditions to all forms of visas as is “reasonably necessary to manage the effects, or deal with the con-
sequences, of … Covid-19”. Second, the much-disputed Covid-19 Public Health Response Act 2020 established orders that could be made to “require persons to refrain from taking any specified actions that contribute or are likely to contribute to the risk of the outbreak or spread of Covid-19”. Those orders extend to requiring people to be isolated or quarantined, report for medical examination or testing, and provide any information needed for contact tracing. At the core of this debate is a question of compulsion. The challenge lies in finding a path between the continuing global emergency and a domestic situation that is largely controlled but vulnerable. Enforced quarantine, mandatory testing and contact tracing are the logical solutions in protecting our borders, and the current legislation provides for them. Longer term – especially if and when a vaccine is developed – this will be a difficult debate. Kiwis (rightly) do not like the idea of compulsion, unless there is a clear and declared emergency. Furthermore, the right to refuse to undergo any medical treatment became part of our Bill of Rights. This has been interpreted as the right to object to a range of medical practices, vaccinations being most notable.
The question will be whether this interpretation is correct and, if so, whether it can be overridden for the public good. Regardless, the existing pieces of legislation should have been ample to protect the population from exposure to the two women in question. We need a royal commission of inquiry There is now an immediate need to assign accountability to the individuals or groups responsible for putting the community at risk. And this leads to the greater need for a royal commission to critically examine this current problem and many others, in the overall way that Covid-19 had been dealt with. From the first national diagnosis of the Covid-19 crisis all the way to the recovery processes, a royal commission should be tasked with reviewing it all: the health, scientific, economic, constitutional, legal and cultural elements of the event. This would provide a public record of what worked, what didn’t, what gaps were apparent and what could be improved next time. And it is the next time we have to be particularly worried about. Pandemics are an intergenerational problem, and what we are enduring will not be the last such experience.

When it’s the right thing to do A
nd so it has ended. The three-week break to get leave off the employer’s books in this new Covid world. Keen readers may recall a thwarted plan to rent a cut-price motorhome. That morphed through various reasons into a “let’s see our backyard via attractive deals on motels and hotels”. We managed to tick off places like Takaka and Collingwood, hitherto undiscovered by us. What a blessedly beautiful place we live in, the weather was kind and so were the accommodation operators. Blenheim turned on its nicest hotel for three of us for a hundred and thirty bucks a night. We thought that was so good, we stayed an extra night. Milford Sound was on the agenda, but when we read on the morning of due departure that it was illegal not to carry chains this time of year going into there, Mrs Mac suggested we mount a fresh assault in the spring or summer. I readily concurred. And so it was back to Wanaka for the three thousand and sixtieth time. Still a place we love though. That wasn’t before stopping at the Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell. Wanting to do something we hadn’t done before, we took advantage of the “we are not making any money out this” discount go kart deal of 30 bucks

PETE’S PERSPECTIVE
down from 49. It was 10 minutes, that felt much longer, of pure adrenalin fun. Pushed to come up with racing names on the terms and conditions digital entry form I opted for MacWeapon and, on assisting with Larraine’s form, managed to put her down as Fanny McFast and push submit before she had a chance to stop me. The pure entertainment value in hearing them call out Fanny McFast to collect her certificate at the end in front of 10 other contestants was worth the entry fee alone. She did amazingly well for a chick with a dodgy hip. Loosely translated, she didn’t come last. All was going swimmingly until the journey home on the last day. Heading from Twizel to Tekapo, we were in a line of sundry traffic whereupon I saw something that sickened me to the core. Up ahead, on a rising bend, on a yellow line, a car pulled out to pass other traffic. My jaw dropped. I couldn’t
quite believe what I was seeing. What sort of person would do this? I decided to find out. Further on I managed to safely pass slower towing traffic in front, and there was the offending vehicle stuck behind some trucks by now. My co-pilot managed to get a photo of the car with number plate to send to the cops but realistically, what could they do? I flashed through thoughts of this being regular behaviour for this driver and it seemed to me that it could only be a matter of time before they killed themselves or worse, other innocent people. Now behind them and having no idea who might be at the wheel, I tooted and signalled to pull over. A defiant “flappy raised hand” went up. I tooted again, and repeated my pull-over gesture. This time the car pulled over and the driver’s window went down. Not wanting to write myself off in the passing traffic, I went around to the passenger side and stood back whilst the window came down. It was a youngish woman driver and what appeared to be her mother in the passenger seat. “What on earth were you doing back there,” I protested. “That was incredibly dangerous.” Immediately the driver came
back with a story of the vehicle in front braking suddenly and she had nowhere to go. Certainly didn’t look at all like the situation from my vantage point. And clearly, if that was the case, said driver was travelling too closely. Basic road rules stuff really. Following discussion I wrapped up with, “look I’m not trying to be a prick, but this sort of behaviour kills people. Please, for your own sake and others, don’t ever do that again.” As I got back in my car emotions were mixed. What had I just done? Was it even okay? Let he who has not sinned etc. I didn’t enjoy it at all and seriously questioned my own rights to take such action. And then I thought of the other road users, who through no fault of their own, could meet this driver on the wrong side of the road, on a bend in a high speed, full-frontal crash. Once I had considered that, eventually I didn’t feel so bad. Enjoy this great country of ours guys, and keep safe out there. UNITED ON A ROLL

Forging ahead should be the brief for Mid Canterbury United as the side treks north today. Football teams are set to contend with greasy conditions at the very least following steady rain in Canterbury over the past three days. Confidence levels should be high for United’s Canterbury Championship League side and they will back themselves against Universities. The Ilam-based club however present a curious challenge, de-
spite sitting in seventh spot after two rounds. Although they went down to competition front runners FC Twenty 11 last weekend, the side did secure a point at home in their first competition game, against Halswell United. The home team will be looking to recapture their goal-scoring clout against the Mid Cantabrians. MCUFC got themselves on the board last week following a solid 3-1 win at home over Burwood. However conditions could present further challenges for all
of the teams today. Training runs on Thursday were called off throughout Christchurch and the Selwyn district, with grounds staff wanting to preserve grounds for today. Mainland Football was expected to reassess the situation yesterday. The odd shower was forecast across parts of the region for today. The United reserves meanwhile have struggled, conceding 16 goals across the two rounds. Universities are also without a win in the CCL reserves grade.
Down in the senior men’s grades, Methven is well placed in division 2, unbeaten after two weeks of football. The side is back at home where they take on the FC Twenty 11, who are coming off a big win over the Bombers in last week’s interclub derby. Methven have proven their goal scoring prowess, with a total of 10 goals from their first two outings as the Mid Cantabrians sit pretty in third place in the 10-team grade. United’s division 4 team are also tracking nicely following a
draw and an impressive 5-2 win against the Hornby Honeybadgers in Christchurch last week. The team is back in Mid Canterbury today where they host a winless Hornby team at the Ashburton Domain. Also without a win is Methven’s division 6 team, who were humbled 8-0 last week at home by Halswell which sent them crashing to the foot of the ladder. They take on Papanui-Redwood in Christchurch today, a crucial game for both sides as they look to secure much needed competition points.

■■INDOOR BOWLS
Bowlers eye return to the mats The Ashburton Indoor Bowls community are gearing up for a return to the mats, but what will meet them when they do finally get there is still up in the air. Across the country, the season has been all but demolished, with the cancellation of most major events including the National Championship and a number of other big ticket events. Some clubs and associations have returned to play, and Ashburton Indoor Bowls Association president Ken Mackenzie said that locally a date in July would be set to kick things off. “We’re still working through the process of what the rest of the season might look like,” Mackenzie said. “There’s a number of events that can still be played for, but it’s a case of canvassing the community and see what they want, and some of the feedback I’ve had already would suggest that not everyone is keen to just pick up where we normally would and that’s understandable.” New Zealand Indoor Bowls have announced their calendar for the remainder of the season, which will see the National Mixed Pairs still competed for as well as the Henselite Singles, which sees the best singles player from each association shooting for national success. “With those events remaining in the mix, we’ll certainly have to look at accommodating an event for our players who wish to compete for those events to play in to qualify,” Mackenzie said. Also back on the calendar is the Inter-Island test match between
the North and the South, a highlight of the annual bowls season for players. That fixture will be played in Christchurch. Secondary school events have also been added.
Mackenzie said further information would be provided at the local level in the coming weeks to outline the calendar for the remainder of the season which, under normal circumstances, would be well and truly under way.

Celtic girls itching to get out on the paddock By Adam Burns
Adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
A mix of nerves and excitement is the underlying feeling among the Celtic women’s rugby side heading into the start of competition. The team face off against Linwood today in Christchurch as the Metro women’s competition kicks into action for the first time this year. New coach Nick McCain says the girls just want to get stuck in after an elongated buildup to a season commencement. “They’ve all been doing their own training and competing against each other during the whole lockdown,” McCain said. “They’re all real keen they just want to play some rugby.” The squad was made up of a healthy mix of experience and enthusiasm. “There’s some new girls who have never played before, but have always wanted to,” McCain said. “And a few mums who have always wanted to play but never thought they had the opportunity.” The Celtic club had put on meals for families on Thursdays heading into the
season, which had allowed mothers to complete training sessions. McCain said there was significant potential among the Celtic players. “It’s a shame some of them haven’t been able to play, but priorities do take over.” With the first game of the season and a handful of rookies in among the line-up, it was a case of keeping things simple and seeing what happens for coaching staff. “There’s varying skill levels and there’s some girls who want to move onto specific training. “So it’s been a case of trying to slowly get some of those girls who haven’t played before up to a standard.” With new faces and a new coach, the Sea Snakes have also confirmed a new skipper for the team in the form of lock Georgia Lysaght, following a vote among the squad. There were no lofty expectations for the side in 2020. McCain said it was simply a case of the girls enjoying themselves and returning next year. “If we still have 30 girls wanting to play next year, we’ve won.”
Many of the 2019 Celtic women’s team have returned for another season.

Hampstead host Celtic in today’s Watters Cup opener.
■■HAMPSTEAD
Time for a change A long-awaited change in Watters Cup fortunes should be the impetus for Hampstead. It has been more than a decade since the club notched a local competition win, however a compressed season born from extraordinary circumstances could open the door for the Hampstead contingent. Co-coach William McCormick
believes the side looks stronger for its 2020 campaign compared to previous years, which should negate any sense of complacency among fellow Mid Canterbury clubs. “We’ve brought back a lot of experience from around the club,” he said. “A few guys have come back in to play and one of our former top
players has come in to coach as well. “It’s worked out great.” The team’s build-up to the Watters Cup began last weekend as they registered a 27-19 pre-season victory over Hornby, on their home ground. A strong collective foundation rather than specific individuals is what the club will build its 2020

game plan around, McCormick said. “It’s just about working together as a team and trusting that guy inside and outside you.” Although Celtic have had the wood on Hampstead, there remained a competitive spirit between the two clubs. “It’s quite competitive between the two clubs.
Methven Celtic Bye Round Five: Celtic v Southern Methven v Rakaia Hampstead Bye Semi-finals: July 25 Final: August 1
“I know they’ve got a young side. “But this is our must win game of the season.” Hampstead will be banking on some enthusiastic home support to guide them home in what would be an historic win for the club. McCormick is joined on the coaching panel by Robert Tito in 2020.
■■METHVEN
Motivation easy to come by Redemption is a dish best served in the form of success, and there is no doubt that’s the modus operandi for Methven this season when they take to the paddock. That extra time loss in last year’s Watters Cup final still has the club smarting, and ensuring that they put themselves in the best possible position to right that defeat is a critical part of their thinking. In the eyes of new coach Simon Fleetwood, who will be joined by Grant Breach at the helm, missing out on the first round of the competition due to the bye could end up being a positive. Following on from their success last weekend against Prebbleton, where they claimed the Lemon Busch Shield, they head down to Fairlie today to tackle Mackenzie in a final hit-out before their competition begins next week. “I think it puts us in a really good position,” Fleetwood said. “We can pick up on the things we identified last week and put them to
work this week and it should mean that we really hit the ground running next week when we enter the competition.” Fairlie will provide a good test. They’re known for their physical presence on the paddock and Fleetwood is looking forward to the challenge his charges will face. With a core squad of 26 to work with, they are well enough served in the numbers department, but won’t be wanting to suffer too many injuries. Flying winger Hugh Griffiths is back in the mix after his injury-ravaged season last year and his brother, Jack – who returned to New Zealand during Covid-19 from his playing contract in Spain – is a welcome addition to an impressive backline. Add to that players with vast experience like Matt Groom and Tyler Blackburn who will play pivotal leadership roles this season and that redemption that is sure to have been talked about in the changing sheds already is well on track. Methven halfback Tyler Blackburn will again be a key player for his side this season.

■■CELTIC
Youth key for green machine Celtic will be hoping a mix of youthful exuberance and solidarity will be the recipe for success in 2020. The club bring to the Watters Cup table a young group helmed by Shaun Cooper and Willy Tahuri. Although Tahuri is in his first senior club head coaching stint, he brings national age group experience to the Celtic equation following assignments with the Colts, the South Island under-18 Maori and New Zealand under-18 Maori sides. It will be more than just the silverware that Celtic will be playing for during this campaign, after a challenging time for the group during Covid lockdown. “Some of them (players) didn’t have work,” Tahuri said. “A couple of our members lost family members which meant they weren’t able to connect back with family during it.” He said there had been talks ahead of the Watters Cup campaign about playing for some-
thing more than representative honours. “I reminded the guys as soon as we were allowed to return to training that we were really privileged to do what we do right now because there’s a lot of people in this world who don’t have that anymore. “It’s definitely made us tighter.” As far as some of that young blood, openside flanker Ashton McArthur has been touted as one to watch, alongside fullback Elyh McKibbin. “They’re both really young but have a lot of talent and I’m just fortunate there’s some senior players around them to help the growth,” Tahuri said. Celtic will go in to today’s opener as firm favourites against Hampstead, however he believes their rival’s unpredictability made them dangerous. “We respect them. “I know the club intimately so it could be chaos. “You don’t know which Hampstead team is going to turn up.”
■■SOUTHERN
A new perspective Although the core of Southern’s playing stocks from 2019 will again be a factor during this year’s Watters Cup, the club is treating this campaign as a clean slate. The side were beaten finalists in the Luisetti Seeds Country Combined competition in 2019 against Glenmark-Cheviot. There will be a handful of new faces for Southern in a chase for silverware this season. The scrapped combined competition is no longer part of the rugby picture, with Southern to bring the heat over the next few weeks against their Mid Canterbury rivals. With one pre-season game out of the way, the team are ready to “rip into it” as they take on Watters Cup holders Rakaia today. Co-coach Jon Dampney said if you could not get up for these local matches there was no point in turning up. “You’ve got to put your best foot forward,” he said. “We had a pretty good training this week and we pushed the boys pretty hard.”
■■RAKAIA
Champs in rebuild mode Rakaia on the rebuild. One of the traditional heavyweights of Mid Canterbury rugby are set to look very different this season as the Watters Cup holders build towards a shortened campaign. A new-look team will take to the field for its competition opener against Southern today in which the home team will be less about experience and more about eagerness among a young playing group. As far as the Rakaia club is concerned, last year’s cup triumph in the mud against Methven counts for very little, if anything, in 2020.
Team manager Chris Burrows said Covid-19 had put a spanner in the works in terms of its squad depth. “It’s been tough going,” he said. “It’s always difficult to get people motivated for a five-week campaign but that’s what we’ve got to play to.” The reduced rugby season was always going to be one of the biggest hurdles for both players and administrators. The Rakaia club have not been without some experienced players withdrawing from club commitments for the upcoming season. “We’ve got quite a few young players,” Burrows said.
“It’s just about starting again really.” It is set to be a trial by fire for Rakaia’s rookies in which the side would need to work together as a unit to maintain the club’s competitive edge. The old adage of taking it week by week will be the default setting for the young squad. At home first up, they have a stiff challenge in the form of Southern, particularly up front. “They hunt you around the park a bit. “We’ll just have to play our game as much as we can and with a young team we’ll just be moving them around as much as we can.”
Dampney himself is making the shift from player to coach this season. The Mid Canterbury centurion admits it has taken some time to adjust, but he had been well supported among the senior group. “The boys have been really good just helping me and James (Carr) out, just making that transition a bit easier for us. “We’ll soon see if we’re on the right track.” Carr was also part of Southern’s playing group in 2019. With the reduced season and limited preparation across the board, Dampney believes there is an element of the unknown heading into the restart of club rugby. “We’d usually have a few (pre-season) games under our belt by this stage and know how we’re all tracking,” he said. “But it’s a local game in which both teams will be up for. “It should be pretty entertaining.”

■■OPINION
Club rugby - it’s been a long time coming A ll it takes is for the weather gods to play ball, and the picture will be complete – a great day on the rugby patch, as club games kick off all around the countryside. It’s all go on the bigger stage as well, as the Super Rugby Aotearoa competition kicks off; well, the important part anyway. I think some of the teams, you know, the ones vying manfully to see who is going to come second, had a bit of a run around last weekend, but it’s tomorrow when the real action starts, when Razor’s crew steps out in Wellington’s Cake Tin to crush the hapless Hurricanes. Have you seen the roster available to the best coach in the country, apparently all fully fit? What a massive headache the Crusaders’ mentor has; leaving someone out of that little lot. Anyway, in our own backyard, the Watters Cup goes from

nothing to full noise in an instant, what with this being a most unusual year and all. Normally, at this point in time, everyone’s had a fair look at everyone else, during the course of the Combined Country Cup competition, but Covid put an abrupt end to all that carry-on. So instead of a drawn-out leadin to the sharp end, it’s all go from minute one, with every match vitally important, and everyone – coaches, players and spectators – is acutely aware of that. With only the five teams competing again, it’s an even more ruthless environment. It’s all a far cry from the old days, when a Watters Cup cam-
paign had to be planned with at least eight or nine different game plans in mind. While there is no doubt each and every current coaching team is deadly serious about booking a spot at the Showgrounds on August 1, imagine how much more effort, heartache and headaches were involved way back then. If you wore the colours of a town club, you always had in mind a tough trip to Mt Somers or Mayfield, where the big, rawboned country boys were going to give your forward pack a torrid, extremely physical working over, regardless of how the scoreboard was ticking along – and occasionally, way back when, the grass might have been a bit tougher for the backs to run through, being nine or ten inches long in places. Trips to the country were a different prospect for the younger grades though – even if you had to play in snow occasionally at Mayfield – as the younger fellas
learnt about the ways and hospitality of the country pubs, specifically with regard to Lion Brown, Bavarian, or if you had zero taste buds DB Green. Carloads of 17-year-olds in dad’s car, cruising the outer countrysides in full thirst mode on a Saturday evening; what could possibly go wrong? But the seniors had more important things on their minds – well, mostly – and getting round the country circuit, including Hinds, Rakaia and then the perennially toughest of them all, Methven, unscathed was a major success. But even success in the country just meant that you had to reset and face the town teams though; with Old Boys, Celtic, Allenton, Tech Old Boys, Hampstead and later Tinwald and Collegiate to get past, all with different playing styles, all with some very, very good players within their ranks to look out for and try and counter.
But in 2020, where in theory two wins could get you into the final (as Hampstead will be well aware), there’s no long-term plan, just full steam ahead and hope for the right bounce of those fifty-fifty balls. Rakaia are the defending champions, and although several of the recent finals have been fought out between them and the Southern boys, Celtic and Methven have also tasted victory in the last decade, so history doesn’t tell us too much about the direction things might be headed in, and Hampstead are a bit like the Blues in that same time frame – they haven’t won anything, but everyone still keeps a very careful eye on them because the potential is always there; last year they were in with a shout in the final minutes of several big clashes. So bring on a bit of sunshine, get the man to blow his whistle, and we’re into it!
■■MOTOR RACING
No Supercars round for Auckland Auckland won’t get to host a round of the Australian Supercar competition this season after all. The Auckland race was to be pushed back until January to give it the best chance of taking place in a trans-Tasman bubble due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A revamped schedule was announced in May but more changes have now been made with the season to finish in December. That means the Auckland round is dropped along with the
race at The Bend in South Australia and a second event at Bathurst which had been planned as the season finale in February. Supercars chief executive Sean Seamer said the update to the revised calendar has been made following weeks of discussions with key stakeholders including broadcast partners and team owners. “The Auckland SuperSprint is a major drawcard on Auckland’s annual events calendar. Fol-
lowing discussions over recent weeks, it has become clear to all parties that an event in January could not go ahead due to the effects of Covid-19. “We are committed to include the Auckland round in the 2021 calendar which is due to be released in October,” he said. “When the draft calendar was released four weeks ago, our primary objective was to ensure we returned to racing as soon as possible,” Seamer said.
“This allowed us to put a stake in the ground and ensure we returned to the track quickly following the Covid-19 shutdown. “The calendar announced in May was based on the best information we had at the time. “With an eye on 2021, teams and broadcast partners have agreed it is in all parties’ best interests commercially and competitively to finish this year’s campaign in December and start the new season in the New Year.”

CLUB NEWS Ashburton Golf Club What a beautiful Saturday we just had, around 100 golfers took to the Brandon and some great golf was the reward. The frost turned it into a later start for the morning chaps and the ladies, but it seemed everything worked out ok, so well done to all involved. Jason Overend was the standout in the par round, with +4, I believe. His superb form has earned him a promotion into Hoppy’s pennants team for this Sunday. I am not sure if that is really a reward, seems more like a custodial sentence to me. We had some shock results in the Presidents trophy and cup quarter-finals, and this has thrown up some great semi-finals. Top seed in the trophy Steve McLoy used his shots well and downed club champ Jeff Hewitt, and now faces Chris Lovelock, and in the other game Captain Terry will lock horns with Alan White. Two good games, my money would be on a Steve, Terry final but Chris and Alan are both great matchplayers and will get the shots, should be fun. In the Cup semis Blair Franklin faces up to Richard McKernan, Blair gave George a bucket full of shots and finally managed to overcome him on the 19th and Richard forced Paul Morrison into submission with earache. This should be a power game with two gun golfers going at each other.
In the last semi, Trevor Watson will run rings around Paddy Bradford. Trevor should get about 20 shots, but most pundits reckon he would still win “off stick end”. Blair and Trevor in the final it is. Good luck to all. On Sunday we have the Mid Canterbury pennants across the district. Hamish and his Bullets take on Tinwald Turbos, Hoppy and his Bulldogs play Rakaia Fire, Tommy’s Battlers will see to Tinwald Trainwrecks and Paddy’s Bangers will have a tough game against Mayfield Masters. All these games will be on the gorgeous Mayfield course, looking forward to it, great place and great members, I think the club rooms will be bouncing. Shane and his Bravehearts take on the Methven Maulers at home, so I think we can safely put a win in their column. Both ladies teams are at Rakaia where the Belles are against Tinwald Teasers and the Birdies play the Mayfield Maidens. Good luck to all, results next week. Good Golfing
Ashburton MSA Petanque Club Our Social Days started up again last Tuesday with a good turnout of 24, and this week our Tuesday Social competition started up again with 22 players taking part and the rest just playing socially. Over the week-end we played three club competitions that had been deferred because of
the lock down. Club Drawn Doubles was won by Ellen Pithie and Mavis Thompson. Runners-up were Peter Marriott and Richard Browne. Third were Francie Osborne and Johnny Wright. 14 other players took part. Club Mens Drawn Doubles was won by Richard Browne and Trevor Nish. Runners-up were Peter Marriott and Gary Hogg. Club Womens Drawn Doubles was won by Ellen Pithie and Karen Bensdorp, runners-up were Jan Guilford and Shelagh Field. Third were Betty King and Johnny Wright. Our next club games are on July 11th and 12th. The next tournament is at the beginning of August. Our AGM is next Thursday 25th and we look forward to a good turnout.
Ashburton MSA Travel Section The Travel Section met for the first time since the Covid-19 lockdown and this was for their Annual meeting which had been deferred because of the lock down. There was a good attendance and Dennis Blincoe was again elected as Chairman, Marion Harrison as Secretary and Des Prendergast as Treasurer. Members spoke well of the outing last March which included a visit to 2 farms and a most enjoyable BBQ lunch.
The next outing is being planned for September when the weather is warmer. Any MSA member can take part in these trips.
Ashburton Writers’ Group President Julie Fechney welcomed members to the June meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group. Members agreed that it was great to be back, after cancelling the April and May meetings due to Covid 19. Debbie gave the quotation “Ability may get you to the top but it takes character to keep you there”. Rae gave a report on the Short Story Competition, entries had started coming in, judging day to be 7 July. There was discussion on evaluation of stories and poems. Members to advise if they want their efforts to be critiqued. The Assignment for the meeting was to write a story titled “Glamorous”. Members wrote of lockdown, look, Hotel foyer, blonde bank manager, business suits, oval shaped bowl, way to escape and bliss. The meeting concluded at 3pm with the serving of afternoon tea. The July meeting will be busy, as all the short stories received in the competition will be read by members. Visitors are welcome at our meetings, contact Rae on 3088927.
MAJOR CHANGE PROPOSED FOR ASHBURTON GUARDIAN Recently, I shared with my staff a proposal to restructure the Ashburton Guardian. It is now important I share the proposal with you, our valued and loyal readers and advertisers. You are key stakeholders in the newspaper and have been for more than 140 years. The proposal is to reshape the Ashburton Guardian as a community publication and publish it three days a week, probably on a Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. One of the main reasons for the proposal is to maintain the Guardian’s viability. The media, in general, including newspapers, have been under severe pressure over the last few years and the Guardian, like many before it, is at a crossroads. Its format needs to be replenished to face the future with confidence. The Ashburton Guardian is one of the last remaining independent and privately owned daily newspapers in New Zealand. It has resisted takeover and mergers. The newspaper has been an integral part of the Mid Canterbury community since 1879. That’s a proud record. Five generations of the Bell family have served the paper since 1900. We want to see it continue. The proposal, which I have shared with my staff and you, the reader, is to ensure its future. Should the newspaper not find a sustainable operational model, it will likely cease publishing and the business will close. I’m sure none of us want that to happen. Instead I want the newspaper to continue its role as the backbone of local journalism, the voice of our people, recording community achievements and events, engaging with and
bringing Mid Canterbury people together, facilitating and being a pillar of the democratic process. We can only do that within a model that is robust and viable. On the surface, the proposal recommends reducing the number of weekly issues. That is true. But it also has many advantages and exciting opportunities. Pages will increase, enabling our editorial staff to focus further on community stories, profiles and opinion pieces and providing more space and scope for local advertisers. With reduced national and international coverage, the Guardian can showcase Mid Canterbury, be the pre-eminent provider of your local news and advertising and an indispensable part of your life. I am seeking feedback to the proposal from staff and would value ideas and suggestions from you. I will communicate again shortly about the direction the Guardian is taking and, by then, be able to present to you a new subscription package which will also address changes in payment for advanced subscribers. I am looking at the new community Guardian as a wonderful challenge and a huge opportunity to continue serving the Mid Canterbury people. Yours sincerely, Bruce Bell Owner Ashburton Guardian.

Your Stars

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Do you actually know your strengths? They are so inherent that it takes another person to point them out for you to even begin to realise what they are. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): It takes confidence to do this, but that’s your cosmic boon today, so here it goes: If you make someone earn your attention, you’ll both be better for the effort. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Capture your heart’s memories. If you don’t, who will? The way you see it may not match how others do, but it is nonetheless a vital part of the story. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Style doesn’t necessarily cost money, though it does take a great deal of creativity and effort. You’re willing to put in the time because you love how good style makes you feel. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): The words meant to show one person’s superiority are always suspect. We are all in this together. Uniqueness and specialness support insofar as they help generate solutions. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Every generation evolves. You’ll notice today how you do things differently from the way your parents did, and their parents... and you’ll get a sense of what is working and what’s not. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Divert your focus from unwanted outcomes. Plan to ignore them, and then follow through on that plan. Things lose power without attention to fuel them. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): A scattered mind can get focused right quick with the broom of intention to focus it. Write down your top aim, and then give yourself a timeframe in which to accomplish it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): People will tell you who they are. They won’t even realise they are doing it, but the truth of your presence will draw out the truth of theirs, and then all will be known. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Kind gestures will be reciprocated. Warm feelings will create a simmering brew enjoyed by many. Keep the good vibes going today, and this elixir will last through the weekend. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): People play games. Some games are competitions with rules. Some are subconscious games, primal even, with the intent to establish social order, and that they certainly will. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Your respect for others makes you beloved. This is a concept that those who are drunk on power do not understand. Humility and curiosity have power beyond the auspices of might.
