Water meters on the horizon By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Water meters may be coming for all properties connected to any of the Ashburton District’s 12 potable water supplies. Yesterday Ashburton District councillors asked staff to prepare a cost-benefit analysis on water meter installation district-wide, in a move to better manage consumption and to track water loss. Across New Zealand only nine local authorities have universal metering of all water connections, while six have more than 50 per cent meter coverage, but with a water loss of 50 per cent across its supplies, mayor Neil Brown said meters would be the council’s best tool in tracking and stemming this loss. “Whatever we’ve been doing to limit this loss is not working so we need to put meters on so we can identify it and stop it,” he said. Whether the council charged property owners for the water they used or not, would be part of the analysis, but that charging regime could only be introduced through the next long-term plan. In the short term, the meters would allow the council to collect data on water use patterns, Brown said. Over the past two years the
council has installed meters on a number of smaller schemes with high rates of water demand or water loss. The meters are not used as a charging tool but have seen a significant reduction in water consumption. Wholesale meter installation is likely to come with a price tag of around $5 million and there would be ongoing operational costs in reading meters and billing, but those issues would be part of the cost analysis process, policy advisor Rachel Thomas said. Currently each property without a meter is charged the same targeted, fixed rate for water, regardless of how much is used. While universal water metering would not be popular with residents, installation did not mean volumetric charging would be introduced and if the council went down this path there would be opportunities for public input, Brown said. Councillors also agreed to complete the roll-out of water meters in the residential D zone, where some property owners are charged for using water over their allocated amount and others are not. This will cost $120,000 and the project will be completed by October.

Indoor events over 100 banned NZME Health Minister David Clark has announced that the Government will enforce a mass gatherings limit of 100 people for indoor events. These measures, however, don’t apply to schools, universities or other educational institutes. Nor do they apply to workplaces, supermarkets or public transport. “There is still no evidence of community transmission in New Zealand,” Clark said. Protecting the health of New Zealanders is our number one priority, and that means we need to reduce the risks associated with large gatherings,” he said. He said for those not sure of what to do when it comes to mass gatherings: “If in doubt, cancel.” “We know this has specific implications for the hospitality sector. We will work with the sector over the next 24-36 hours to develop guidance,” Clark said. He said making sure social distancing rules are in place is one of the most important things the Government can do to protect the public. It comes just four days after Cabinet agreed that gatherings
Health Minister David Clark has announced the Government will enforce a mass gatherings limit of 100 people when indoors. These measures, however, don’t apply to schools. of 500 or more people would not go ahead. Clark said that just because an event does not have 500 or 100 people doesn’t mean people can ignore appropriate hygiene measures. “For any gathering or event, you need to ensure people can stay further than one metre apart and have the ability to wash and dry their hands thoroughly. “Regardless of the size of a gathering, if someone is unwell, they
shouldn’t attend.” Clark said in workplaces where physical distancing isn’t possible, companies should look at other measures which can be used to protect staff, such as working from home. Clark said the Ministry of Health has produced guidance to help people understand this new direction. Asked how the new rule would be enforced, he said medical of-
ficers of health can shut down events. If someone goes ahead with an event, Clark said the organisers would face legal consequences. But he said he expects that people would comply with the new rules. Clark said New Zealand would be in this situation “for some time” when asked how long these rules would be in place. But the Government would be “constantly reviewing” the rules. “The Ministry of Health has produced guidance to help people understand this direction, but if in doubt cancel. Making sure we put in place social distancing rules is one of the most important things we can do to protect the public,” Clark said. “Large gatherings and events are a high-risk environment for the spread of infectious diseases like Covid-19 because people often behave in ways that facilitate transmission at these events. “Anyone who has returned from overseas and needs to be in self-isolation must also stay away from gatherings. There shouldn’t be any grey area around this – if you’re meant to be in self-isolation, you don’t go to any gathering or event.”
Anzac services cancelled, poppy appeal postponed NZME The Returned and Services Association (RSA) has made the decision to cancel any public Anzac Day events this year and is postponing its national Poppy Day appeal. The decision means it will be the first time Anzac Day services have been cancelled since they were started in 1915. It is the first time Poppy Day has been postponed since 1922. Gatherings of 500 or more people held both out and indoors were advised to be cancelled by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday. Following that announcement, national RSA president BJ Clark said: “We need to consider the demographic we have in our RSA and those that would be attend-

ing Anzac Day parades.” “It’s our responsibility to remember and acknowledge those that have served but also to ensure our members and the public are kept safe.” Clark described the virus as a “powerful and dangerous foe”. “RSAs, and the communities they are part of, all over New Zealand, must fight hard to protect our whanau and kaumatua from the transmission of this virus. For this reason, RSA has decided that it is in the best interests of all New Zealanders to take these decisions.” Local Ashburton RSA members were waiting to learn of the latest updates from government when spoken to yesterday but would be coming together immediately to work out a game plan going forward.
Any further restrictions in numbers at gatherings could seriously impact on a number of other aspects of their day-today operations, so the desire was to wait and learn more before jumping in and making hasty decisions. RSA chief executive Karen Rolleston told Newstalk ZB that everyone is extremely disappointed about the cancellations over the public gatherings. “This is the most important commemorative day in the New Zealand calendar,” she said. “Hundreds and thousands of New Zealanders get out and support us on Anzac and not to be able to do that is absolutely gut-wrenching.” She said they are working on alternative plans with other agencies and an announcement

would be made shortly on how Kiwis across the country can still show their support and commemorate it in a safe and sensible way. Rolleston said the RSA consulted widely with the Government, health agencies and members and considered a lot of information. “Some people were a bit critical that we were too slow to announce, but we wanted to be able to consider all information that was out there and made sure we had correct information.” Rolleston encouraged New Zealanders not to forget about Anzac Day just because events have been cancelled. “When we provide the public with an alternate plan, please take that up and show your support in these difficult times.”

Refugee arrival a fluid, fast moving situation Ashburton’s first group of refugees are scheduled to arrive from Afghanistan in June, but the Covid-19 pandemic is creating a very fluid situation around that arrival. Rigorous health checking already exists for refugees coming to New Zealand. They are now tested for Covid-19 before departing for New Zealand and are routinely going into isolation at the Mangere Refugee Centre. They will be checked again before leaving for their resettlement communities, Immigration New Zealand general manager refugee and migrant services Fiona Whiteridge said. A total of 118 quota refugees have just arrived in New Zealand for the six-week reception programme at the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre (MRRC), which began yesterday. All quota refugee arrivals from March 12 onwards are being self-isolated in their accommodation blocks at the centre for the first 14 days in the country. A Covid-19 screening nurse is also on site to support ongoing assessment and will remain at the centre until the refugees move into the community, she said. Since Sunday, public access to the Mangere centre has been restricted to staff and essential services and refugees are being allowed to leave the centre only to attend essential services such as health appointments. “There is a significant amount of health specific education material and contingency planning in place. Every person leaving the centre will undergo a health check prior to departure, .” Whiteridge said. Quota refugees are still on track to arrive in Blenheim and Timaru at the end of April but the refugee quota intakes are being reviewed on a regular basis as the situation is fluid and fast evolving.

■■NEW LIFE CHURCH
Uncertainty over 50th celebrations By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
When Ashburton’s New Life Church was about to celebrate the opening of its new building in Tinwald, the February 2011 Canterbury earthquake struck and the building became an evacuation centre for hundreds of displaced people. And this weekend, with celebrations for its 50th anniversary ready to roll, Covid-19 pandemic precautions could see another of the church’s signature events canned. Just one day out, however, the New Life team are moving ahead with plans, but pastor Lisa Anderson said they’re ready to call the event off if needed. Already there have been cancellations from people planning to attend, and numbers have now become very fluid, she said. “We’re not worrying, we’re listening to the Ministry of Health and we’ll be doing what ever they tell us to do. If it gets cancelled, it gets cancelled.” The church’s members took the cancellation of the building opening in 2011 in their stride and turned their efforts to helping the community, she said. “We’d been planning for months, gathering food and we were going to have a huge celebration, but the earthquake happened and we became an evac-

PHOTO SUE NEWMAN 190320-SN-0023 uation centre. All the things we’d gathered were used to support the community.” Her team was working as though the weekend’s celebra-
tions would happen, but they would deal with the need to cancel if required, she said. The two-day celebration will involve a time for connection and
reunion on Saturday. There will be a timeline for the development of the church and a collection of photographs taken over the years on display, but as Covid-19 pre-
cautions ramp up, Anderson said the event was constantly being reshaped. Church services will be held on Sunday. “In terms of refreshments, everything we do now will be individualised because people’s health must come first. On Saturday night we’d planned a dinner in the auditorium, a really cool party, but that’s now up in the air.” The shape and form of the celebration would absolutely be driven by Ministry of Health recommendations, Anderson said. “Fifty years is a significant amount of time. God doesn’t need us to throw a big party – look what happened when we were supposed to open this place – but it will be awesome if it goes ahead.” Fifty years ago Ashburton’s New Life Church had a membership of just 21; today, as it looks to celebrate its half century this weekend, it can now count its members at more than 600. The church started in pastors David and Norma Ellis’ home, later moving to a room above the old St Vincent de Paul building in the Triangle, then to the Hearing Assocation Hall, followed by a long-term tenure in the old Arcadia tearooms building in Tancred Street before the move, in 2011, to the Tinwald Club building when that organisation folded.
Hundreds of vacancies await local unemployed By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury recruiter Matt Jones wants Kiwis who have lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 fallout to get in touch. “We have work all over New Zealand. We’ve got lots of vacancies and we can get people into work, many of them immediately,” Jones said. Jones is managing director at Agstaff, Canstaff and New Zealand Dairy Careers.
The pandemic had increased the need for staff across the sectors serviced by the organisations, and there were hundreds of vacancies. “So we’re calling out to all people who might be facing lay-offs as Covid-19 bites,” Jones said. “The work does not stop, it’s ramped up as some of our clients in the primary production sector increase production to meet New Zealand’s needs. The cows still need to be milked and the crops
must be picked,” Jones said. “Just today we have a client needing more than 40 people to start immediately in South Canterbury. Our local manufacturers are working hard to meet the local food production needs.” And the dairy industry would be seeking employees as some of their immigrant staff set to arrive could not come here. Jones worked closely with Heartland Immigration, which was advising dairy farmers to do
their utmost to retain the staff they currently had. Jones said at any point in time there were more than 600 jobs available in the dairy industry alone, many of which were filled by international workers. “As these people may temporarily slow, we need local people who want work to come forward. There are many opportunities and we are in touch with hundreds of potential employers.” Heartland Immigration man-
aging director Mary Noonan said many scheduled incoming arrivals, destined for the country’s dairy farms to help with the Gypsy Day move, might not be available. “There are a lot of people already here on work visas, the industry needs to ensure visas are renewed to keep experienced workers on our farms,” Noonan said. Jobs are listed at agstaff.co.nz, canstaff.co.nz and nzdairycareers. co.nz, while queries can be directed to admin@agstaff.co.nz.

■■ASHBURTON CAR CLUB
In brief
Creating a safe environment By Heather Mackenzie
photographers@theguardian.co.nz
The Ashburton Car Club has been revving on grass, drifting on tar seal and teaching driving skills for 63 years. Vice-president Daniel Tew has had a long association with the club. He said in his younger days he was on a first name basis with quite a few law enforcement officers around town. Not in a bad way, he added quickly, it was just that he liked taking his car out for a spin on the back roads every so often. But all of his slightly wayward road behaviour stopped when he discovered the Ashburton Car Club. Here he found they offered a far more constructive and law-abiding outlet for his driving talents. So, at the age of 18 he joined up and has been with the club ever since. He was presented with a life membership last year. Tew said the club has all kinds of events on its yearly calendar, with one of the most well known and widely attended being the yearly street sprints during Wheels Week. Not only does this give the car club a chance to strut its stuff entertaining the large crowds that always line the industrial estate course, but it also provides fundraising opportunities for up to three other local clubs through being on the gate, cooking the barbecue and helping with the clean-up. Learning driving skills in different road conditions and on different surfaces is something Tew believes is vital for all drivers to experience. The Motorkhana meetings held in the paddock behind the clubrooms focus on car control,

drifting events are also about skid control, but on tar seal rather than grass. Tew said the idea is for drivers to be able to react to a situation on the open road instinctively, with muscle memory gained through experience and confidence behind the wheel. He knows car club members are at an advantage when it comes to everyday driving, they know what a car can and cannot do, how an anti-lock braking system changes stopping distances and have built-in defensive driving skills. On top of driving skills, the club meetings also provide a great chance for families to get
together and enjoy a good day out. The advent of the Malcolm Lovett Automotive Ltd Twilight Motorkhana series held on a Friday night was developed as an excuse for a social catch-up at the end of the week. “These have worked well, as people can come along and enjoy the racing and still have the rest of the weekend free.” Tew said it is not just a club for boys, the club has a number of female racers too. He stressed that everybody is welcome to come and join in. Non-club members can enter three meetings but to continue racing they are asked to become
a member. Boy racers need not apply – Tew explained that the club is extremely strict on driving behaviour both on and off the course. “If any members are caught behaving badly on public roads, they will have the club to answer to.” Training and making sure the races are run correctly is also something Tew is hot on. He said like anything there is always a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes and being trained properly is a vital part of the race days. “Not just anyone with a chequered flag and a vis-vest can run a race,” he said.
Court not impacted by Covid-19 outbreak By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
No changes are expected to the way the Ashburton District Court operates due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Chief Justice Helen Winkelman announced on Wednesday that all new jury trials within the next two months will be suspended. This does not impact the Ashburton District Court which does not hold jury trials, only judge alone trials. The Chief Justice is working with other judicial leaders and the Ministry of Justice to ensure that all other essential court services operate throughout the pandemic while protecting the health of all of those interacting with and working in the courts. The Ministry of Justice urges those attending court to follow the advice of the Ministry of Health, especially to not come to court if you are unwell, do not come to court if you have

oughly and regularly with soap. In a letter to all lawyers, Chief Justice Winkelman said functioning courts are critical to the maintenance of law and order
and the safeguarding of human rights. “During the current pandemic, it is particularly important for the courts to continue to provide essential justice services for the community – including for victims of crime and those taken into custody,” she said. “Nevertheless, the judicial leadership must also ensure the safety of all who participate in the courts. “The Chief Medical Officer’s advice to the judiciary to date, has been that so long as prudent hygiene precautions are practised in courthouses and community transfer of Covid-19 has not occurred, hearings can proceed safely.” A Ministry of Justice spokeserson said they were busy reacting to each development in the Covid-19 situation and following all advice from the Ministry of Health and had increased the amount of hand sanitiser available at courts.
The Ashburton Covid-19 communications team are reminding anyone who has returned recently from overseas, and is now in isolation, that they should not still be coming into medical facilities for previous scheduled appointments. A high number of people in isolation are found to have been still coming into the hospital for routine follow-up appointments or others like radiology or specialist appointments. The communications team wishes to advise that these appointments should not be attended during periods of self-isolation and those impacted must contact their provider, be it the hospital, their GP or community health care provider to reschedule these appointments.
Panic buying Countdown is introducing limits on some items to stop panic buying due to Covid-19. The supermarket chain says it cannot get some items onto shelves quickly enough if people keep buying at the current rate. It says its supply chain is strong but it needs people to shop normally rather than stockpile. It is putting limits of two items per customer on products such as packs of toilet rolls, hand sanitiser, personal wash, Panadol, wipes, pasta and rice. Earlier, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told NZers not to panic buy or believe rumours circulating on social media about Covid-19, as the total number of confirmed cases rises to - NZME 28.
Brewery changes tack Hamilton-based brewery Good George Brewing is switching some of its distillery to make hand sanitiser, in response to shortages across the country. The brewery set up a distillery where it has been tinkering with making gins and other spirits for the past few months. With the coronavirus pandemic leading to an unprecedented demand for hand sanitiser in New Zealand, the Hamilton brewers decided to put the distillery to use for the greater good. “We got the idea from a customer who said they saw others doing it overseas so we looked into it and decided to give it a go,” Good George Brewing owner Jason Macklow said. Yesterday was day two of the first trial batch of hand sanitiser and, all going to plan, Good George expects to have 1000 litres of this suddenly much sought after commodity ready by Monday. “We’re speeding through it and converting some gear to be able to manage it,” he said. - NZME

■■THE FRY-DAY FRY-UP
New entrant takes top spot In times of crisis it is important to keep some regularity, and I am pleased to report that for the forseeable future the Fry-day Fry-up will continue in the face of a global pandemic. This week the fried food tour stopped off at the Boston Burger, one of two shops that I will be testing that do not include fish or chips in their title. For me the Boston Burger has always sat on this mysterious line where it seems to be a takeaway food shop that does fish and chips rather than a fish and chip shop that does other takeaways. My childhood holds fond memories of picking up roast meals from the Boston Burger with my great grand-parents. However I went in to the shop with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised with the fish and chips on offer. Straying somewhat from the ground rules of this series I did include a burger in the order, hard not to when the place is called Boston BURGER, but it will not be counted as part of the final ranking. The burger was good, but the fish and chips definitely shone the brightest out of the stores

visited so far. Cost was about the same, with a scoop costing $3, the basic hoki fish costing $3 and a hot dog at $2.90.

in a hot dog, being more saveloy than just a sausage and a good size which is what you want if you are paying nearly $3 for one. The fish was definitely the biggest by far in terms of square centrimetres and depth as well and had a good coating of batter. The chips were very similar to the rest of the shops but probably had the best balance of seasoning. I am now happy to say the Boston Burger is leading the competition.
MPs change voting on abortion law reform NZME Sweeping reform of abortion law passed despite a dozen MPs switching their votes for the third and final reading this week. The Abortion Legislation Bill passed on Wednesday by 68 votes to 51, a margin much narrower than in the first and second readings. That was partly because NZ First MPs had previously voted in favour of the bill while a referendum on the issue was still possible. A referendum amendment was voted down earlier this week, and NZ First MPs Darroch Ball, Shane Jones, Ron Mark, Clayton Mitchell, Mark Patterson, Win-
ston Peters and Fletcher Tabuteau changed their votes to oppose the bill at the third reading. National MPs Andrew Bayly, Matt King, Ian McKelvie, Tim van de Molen and Hamish Walker also changed their positions to oppose it. National MP Stuart Smith voted ‘yes’ in the second reading but did not vote in the third reading. NZ First MPs Jenny Marcroft and Tracey Martin supported the bill, but Martin had to vote via proxy as she was at home in self-isolation. She had spoken during the bill’s first reading about a personal story she had wanted to share, but could not as she was obliged instead to talk about NZ First’s po-
sition in support of a referendum. That story was about Beverley Williams, Martin’s mother’s birth mother. “She wasn’t a perfect person. She abandoned her children when my mum was about 2,” Martin told the Herald. “We never met Beverley, and we didn’t know what had happened to her until we went and found Beverley’s grave. “Just before her 30th birthday, she had a backstreet abortion down in Christchurch and died of toxaemia [blood poisoning by toxins]. And her older sister, Eunice, had died the year before from exactly the same thing.” She said that Beverley’s fate was one of the reasons she supported
the bill. “My mum didn’t have a mum because Beverly had to do what she needed to do on her own. “All the statements about abortion being a lifestyle choice, well, women have died for years and years because their lives aren’t perfect and they weren’t able to bring that child into the world.” Martin said Beverley’s story was uncovered after her sister had traced the family history and found one of Beverley’s former co-workers. “We started to find people who were still alive who had known her after she abandoned her kids.” They eventually found Beverley’s and Eunice’s unmarked graves in Christchurch.
Online scams, abuse and bullying likely to rise NZME The country’s online safety organisation is urging people to be alert to scams and seek advice for bullying after reports of abuse went up around the world as self-isolation numbers grow. Netsafe is warning people to be vigilant to opportunistic scammers, fake news and possible online abuse as virtual connections become preferable to physical contact thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Reports from around the world indicate there has been an increase in abuse and harassment online due to Covid-19,” Netsafe chief executive Martin Cocker said. There have already been reports of xenophobic abuse, breaches of the 10 communication principles and social media pile-ons. Cocker said anyone who was aware of such conduct should use Netsafe’s free service for expert incident advice. The Harmful Digital Communications Act says it is illegal for anyone to send or publish threatening, offensive or sensitive material and spread damaging rumours. Individuals can be punished by up to two years in prison or a maximum fine of up to $50,000. “Our expectation is that Kiwis will be more supportive than abusive, but it is a good time to remind people of their rights and responsibilities under the Harmful Digital Communications Act.” Reports of coronavirus scams have also emerged this week. While the scams differ in nature, they all have a common theme in that they are trying to obtain personal information and financial details, Cocker said. Scammers are setting up fake websites selling items such as medical-grade masks, sending emails and texts purporting to be from the World Health Organisation and claiming to “cure” Covid-19 with teas and oils

Drop in house prices, sales predicted RNZ Economists and real estate agents are predicting a drop in prices and sales over the next six months as social distancing makes transactions harder and banks become more risk averse with lending. ASB has predicted house prices will drop 0.5 per cent in the next quarter and 1 per cent the following. Overall house price growth is forecast to be zero by March next year, instead of 5.3 per cent as previously expected. And banks have lowered floating interest rates, following the Reserve Bank’s move to drop the official cash rate. It would be easy to think the notoriously over-heated housing market could tip in favour of buyers. But the chief executive of Real Estate Institute New Zealand, Bindi Norwell, expects home-owners will hold off selling. The most similar scenario to compare the current situation with is the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, she said, where house prices reduced by about 6 per cent and bounced back within a year.
“The biggest impact it did have is on volume. People really did hold on tight for a little while, until they had some certainty around the market.” While the outbreak will have an effect, she is optimistic that sales will go on, she said. Economist and housing commentator Shamubeel Eaqub is also reluctant to predict that it will become a buyer’s market. “Activity is not going to go to zero, but very high levels of activity that you might expect from falling house prices and falling interest rates, I don’t think that will happen in a period where there is so much uncertainty on the economy, the outlook for people’s jobs, and people’s health.” The KiwiSaver kitty is also dwindling for first home buyers. When there is a recession, people stop trading, and in this crisis there is the added issue of social isolation, Eaqub said. “That’s really going to affect people’s ability to transact the normal way.” In China, sales fell sharply while people were in social isolation. Eaqub said buyers that don’t already have a mortgage, will strug-

er behaviour change, he said, especially an increase in tourism hotspots where property owners are looking to sell off surplus property.
For those still in the market, social isolation may become a barrier to sales but that open-home viewings could be swapped for one-on-one visits. ASB said the market should start picking up again at the end of the year if the virus is contained.

gle to secure one from the bank. “Banks will become very risk averse in what is likely to be the deepest and longest recession in living memory.” Eaqub said the cost of borrowing is not the issue, it’s the access to credit. Tall Poppy Real Estate’s Joe Wilkes said while some people will wait to sell, others may be forced into it, especially in harder-hit regions like Queenstown. During a recent stay in Queenstown, he noticed the hotel was only 20 per cent full and most accommodation and Airbnbs were sitting empty. “If people are leveraged up significantly, then they may well find the reduction in occupancy could have an impact and force people to sell.” While it’s early days, he is already seeing some sell-

NZME Qantas and Jetstar are suspending international flights from the end of the month. The move has been triggered by the public health response to the coronavirus crisis although there would be some “ad hoc’’ services possible. The Qantas group is also standing down two-thirds of its 30,000 strong workforce. The will be a 60 per cent reduction to domestic flights in Australia and Jetstar will cut services in New Zealand to a fraction of what they are now. About 20,000 Qantas and Jetstar staff will be stood down during that time. Qantas said in a statement to the ASX yesterday the decision was
made to “preserve as many jobs as possible longer term”. It’s understood staff will be able to use annual and long service leave but some staff will have to endure leave without pay, news.com.au reported. It follows Virgin Australia earlier announcing it was suspending all its international services due to coronavirus. Earlier this week, cuts to 90 per cent of international flying and about 60 per cent of domestic flying were announced by Qantas and Jetstar. With the Federal Government now recommending against all overseas travel from Australia, regularly scheduled international flights will continue until late March to assist with repatriation and will
then be suspended until at least the end of May 2020. Qantas is in ongoing discussions with the Federal Government about continuation of some strategic links. More than 150 aircraft will be temporarily grounded. Discussions are progressing with airports and government about parking for these aircraft. Essential domestic, regional and freight connections will be maintained as much as possible. Jetstar Auckland-Christchurch flights will fall to 14 return services per week, down from 42 and in updated information said that it would retain Auckland-Wellington flights. Suspended are Auckland-Dunedin, Auckland-Queenstown, Wellington-Queenstown and Wellington-Christchurch fights.
Sylnait’s profit drop larger than expected By Rebecca Howard NZME
Synlait Milk’s first-half profit fell more than expected, but it kept its guidance for the full-year and said it is still seeing no operational impact from Covid-19. The milk processor reported net profit of $26.2 million in the six months to January 31, down from $37.3 million a year earlier. Last month it said net profit would be between $26.5 million and $28.5 million. “Due to month end shipment challenges we fell slightly below our guidance range. This is a timing issue,” it said. Last month, it also lowered its annual forecast for net profit to between $70 million and $85 million in the 12 months ending July 31, at best a flat result from the $82.2 million reported the year earlier. Yesterday, Synlait said it “remains
comfortable with its FY20 earnings guidance range” and reiterated plans to play suppliers $7.25 per kilogram of milksolids in the 2019-2020 season. That would be the highest payout since the 2014 season and is up from $6.58/kgMS last season. Synlait said it is seeing no “material short-term impact” from Covid-19, although the outbreak “represents some downside risk going forward”. Profit was supported by the sales of consumer-packaged infant formula, which lifted 22 per cent on the same period. Total revenue was up 19 per cent at $559 million and milk processed rose 8.5 per cent to 46.7 million kgMS. Net profit was weighed on by higher depreciation and interest costs as Synlait invests for growth, it said. Among other things it had a $3.2 million increase in employee costs “reflecting ongoing investment in
people,” it said. Net debt, meanwhile, rose from $159.7 million to $447.4 million in the half year with $220 million of capital expenditure. Funds were used for a second infant-capable manufacturing facility in Pokeno and an advanced dairy liquid packaging plant at Dunsandel. Regarding legal issues surrounding its Pokeno factory, it said “uncertainty remains regarding land at Synlait Pokeno”. However, the company remains comfortable with its legal position ahead of the Supreme Court hearing scheduled for April. Last year, Synlait won the right to appeal a decision restricting the land where its new $260 million Pokeno factory has been built to grazing, lifestyle farming and forestry. The shares closed at $4.62 yesterday, having slumped 48 per cent so far this year.

OUR VIEW
We will still remember them . . . I
f there is a positive to come out of all the darkness surrounding event and sporting cancellations in the wake of Covid-19 it’s that at least they’re not lost completely. Sporting events can be held at another time, perhaps even in another year – musical shows and concerts can be rescheduled once things have settled down and pretty quickly, in most facets of life, we will continue. But there’s one event that can’t be rescheduled. One event that can be held later in the year and one event in which it’s against all morals to even think about holding on a different day. Each year this country, and others, come together as one to
remember the brave. The men and women who selflessly risked, and in many cases, gave their lives for the betterment of our country. We are indebted to them for their service and while for many Anzac Day might be a day off work, it’s about so much more. So news that Anzac services this year have been cancelled will be a bitter pill for many to
swallow. One hundred per cent the right pill, but a bitter one nonetheless. And you can’t help but feel for those involved. The day sparks so many emotions and memories and while some might wish for those memories to be forgotten, it’s also a chance for them to pay their respect to their brothers and sisters in arms who aren’t here to pass on the tales of their efforts to the future generations. But just because there will be no public services, that shouldn’t detract from the day and what it means for us as New Zealanders. We need to stand tall, stand proud and collective and pay our respects and give thanks for those who served us so well.
Some will do it in a mere moment of reflection, while others might choose to do something a little more involved, now – with no public event to attend – it’s basically down to individual choice. What would be wonderful, as a community, is if for that day, we still saw people wearing their, or their family’s medals, making a quick stop to a war memorial, or cenotaph to mark the occasion and generally just being appreciative of what we’ve got because of what they did. It will be without the fanfare, for sure – but it’s still something, which is better than nothing. There have already been some ideas floated about how commu-
nities should mark the occasion and the suggestion that people should stand at the edge of their driveways for a moment’s silence in the early hours of the morning is excellent. It would be particularly poignant and moving to see neighbours and streets full of people, wandering out and standing in solidarity, even if just for a minute, and in these trying times a welcome moment for reflection as well. It’s a wee way away still, but it’s worth having a think about how you might like to mark the day but our community must remember that just because there’s no public service to attend, we cannot forget to remember them.

In 1995, in Tokyo, 12 people were killed, more than 5500 others sickened when packages containing the deadly chemical sarin were leaked on five separate subway trains by Aum Shinrikyo cult members. In 1996, a jury in Los Angeles convicted Erik and Lyle Menendez of first-degree murder in the shotgun slayings of their wealthy parents. (They were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.) In 2004, hundreds of thousands of people worldwide rallied against the US-led war in Iraq on the first

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Friday, March 20, the 80th day of 2020. There are 286 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On March 20, 1854, the Republican Party of the United States was founded by slavery opponents at a schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin. On this date: In 1413, England’s King Henry IV died; he was succeeded by Henry V. In 1760, a 10-hour fire erupted in Boston, destroying 349 buildings and burning 10 ships, but claiming no lives. In 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte returned to Paris after escaping his exile on Elba, beginning his Hundred Days rule. In 1834, a New Zealand flag was first suggested in 1830 after Sydney customs officials seized a Hokianga-built ship. In 1899, Martha M. Place of Brooklyn, New York, became the first woman to be executed in the electric chair as she was put to death at Sing Sing for the murder of her stepdaughter. In 1933, the state of Florida electrocuted Giuseppe Zangara for shooting to death Chicago Mayor Anton J. Cermak at a Miami event attended by President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt, the presumed target, the previous February. In 1942, US Army Gen. Douglas MacArthur, having evacuated the Philippines at the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, told reporters in Terowie, Australia: “I came out of Bataan, and I shall return.” In 1976, kidnapped newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst was convicted of armed robbery for her part in a San Francisco bank holdup carried out by the Symbionese Liberation Army. (Hearst was sentenced to seven years in prison; she was released after serving 22 months, and was pardoned in 2001 by President Bill Clinton.) In 1977, voters in Paris chose former French Prime Minister Jacques

The topic on everyone’s lips T
he topic on everyone’s lips at the moment is Covid-19. I wanted to add a few points. Although, if a good mate of mine in Auckland had his way, I wouldn’t be mentioning it on my radio show (he listens on iHeartRadio) at all and definitely wouldn’t be writing about it. He thinks people are drowning in it at the moment and I’m kind of picking up what he’s laying down. It is such a fast moving beast though and information is evolving so quickly, that I have to cover it, especially on the radio which is the best platform to release updates instantly. I had a local cocky say to me yesterday he feels that the horse has bolted. He would have treated this thing like M. bovis and shut the gate immediately. I would have followed Canada’s lead and closed our borders to everyone except New Zealanders and permanent residents. The arrests of the backpackers who were refusing to follow the self-isolation rules backed up those views in my opinion. My thoughts were also backed up by a poll I ran on my facebook page – “Should our borders be closed (for now) to everyone except New Zealanders and permanent residents?”
Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR
I think it’s the biggest response I’ve had to a poll. Nine hundred and forty-one votes and lots of comments. A landslide result. Ninety-five per cent of voters saying “YES”. I’m not about to start slamming Jacinda though, once again, she has fronted this crisis very well in my opinion and I loved hearing her remind the leader of the opposition that now is the time for pulling together not politicking. One thing we will struggle with when dealing with Covid-19 is the social distancing. It is a natural thing for us Mid Cantabrians, and New Zealanders as a whole, to come together in times of need. I think we still need to do that. We need to check in on our elderly neighbours, family and friends, but keeping that two metre distance, not staying too long and it sounds like the biggy is washing our hands well with soap and water, before and after the visit. Common sense is right up
near the top of the list of musthaves at the moment. When the supermarket people tell us there is no need for panic buying, we need to believe them. We need to follow directions from our health professionals. YES, the flu vaccinations are arriving early for the high risk group, NO, it will not help with Covid-19 and as of yesterday, NO, it hasn’t arrived in Ashburton as yet. Please don’t call your GP about it, you will be contacted, if you are eligible, by your GP. They are being slammed by people calling about flu shots. As you can imagine they will have plenty on their plates already without these calls. It’s easy to roll your eyes and say that all of this is an over-reaction; after all this beasty isn’t even in Ashburton yet. I found myself doing just that on Wednesday when I was advised by my boss in Auckland that I was not to have any more guests in the studio. When I stopped and thought about it though, the last thing I want is to be responsible for passing this thing on. I guess that’s exactly what Jacinda was saying this week, treat your day-to-day life like you already have the virus and be careful not to pass it on.
As I mentioned earlier it’s a fast moving beast and possibly some of this column will already be out of date. I know our local media will do its very best to keep all informed of its evolution and impact locally, I certainly will be. I thought I’d end on a lighter note. I was so glad to see Tom Hanks released from hospital this week. After all, he spent four years on an island as a castaway. One year in an airport without being able to leave. He caught Aids in Philadelphia. He rescued Private Ryan in World War Two. He rescued Lieutenant Dan in Vietnam. He was on a boat kidnapped by Somali Pirates. He survived Apollo 13 trying to reach the moon and landed a Boeing in the Hudson River. If he didn’t make it then we were all doomed! Till next week Hoo Roo Phill Hooper Social distancer Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. Remember MG? It’s back . . . I t started with Japan, then Korea, and for seemingly the last decade the world has waited with bated breath for China to also stamp its authority on the mainstream western car market. It seems a mere formality that the world’s second largest economy will get its head around the motoring world sooner rather than later, notwithstanding the current virus issues. And yet, progress outside of its borders has been slow. It’s been 10 years since Chinese firm Geely was introduced to little old New Zealand, but very little has changed in the time since. But, now there’s the born-again brand MG. It returned to the Kiwi market last year, and aims to ramp things up in 2020 with the introduction of its MG ZS EV (which is set to be the cheapest electric car in New Zealand) and the pictured HS – its competitor against the mid-size Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5. While the notion of a cheap EV is an interesting one, it’s the HS that probably holds more importance. This is the brand’s aspiring volume seller. It’s also, by a reasonably decent margin, the best Chinese vehicle I’ve driven to date. The young, house-proud, two-wineswith-dinner type couple is where MG is hoping to see showroom success with the
HS, as well as with financially savvy older buyers. The HS has been on offer in Australia for a few months now, where it’s been a very successful seller. Dealers have been selling them as fast as they’ve been getting them, to the point that the vehicles designated as media cars originally had to be sold off. And from the go it’s clear to see why it holds such attraction. The HS’s pricing starts at a mere $31,990 for the entry-level Vibe, with the range-top-
ping Excite positioned at $34,990. That means the top spec model is $1000 cheaper than the base Toyota RAV4, but comes packed with monstrous amounts of standard equipment. The jewel in the HS’s equipment crown is the MG Pilot safety suite that’s standard across the board. It includes radar cruise, active lane assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, autonomous emergency braking, automatic high-beams, a system that flags drivers of cyclists that are coming so that

they don’t cause a danger by opening their doors. It’s very comprehensive, and its complemented by a standard 10.1in touchscreen, a digital cluster, a chilled centre console compartment, and more. Its build quality is very impressive, as is the level of practicality. A boot capacity of 463L/1287L paired it nicely up against the opposition, as did all the well-executed patches of soft-touch surfaces, red stitching, and faux-brushed aluminium. On paper, the HS’s turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol four seems adequate; bringing 124kW/250Nm to the party via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. And in practice it’s a combination that works well. Mostly. The engine is loud when pinned, but settles into a surprisingly quiet and refined rhythm once it’s up to operating speed. In fact the whole HS cabin is rather calm and silent, indicative of a decent amount of effort made on insulation. The Excite adds paddles and a Super Sport mode (activated via the comedy big red button on the steering wheel, just like on a Ferrari). Along with adding an extra element of control to the dual-clutch, the Excite’s transmission also feels like it might have a better tune given that it seemed happier most of the time in standard drive modes.

Hybrids CAN be stylish
S
elf-charging hybrids are designed to be economical, more friendly to the environment than straight petrol/diesel models and easy to use, and they’re supposed to do all this with absolutely no concerns of range anxiety for the driver. All of which this hybrid version of this decidedly contemporarily stylish-looking higher-riding compact four door SUV-like hatch showed it does very well. And you certainly notice the C-HR’s curvy character lines and distinctive looks. The swooping style of the rear doors with their abbreviated windows (some in the rear seats may feel they restrict the side view) and the high placed handles. There’s two front-wheel-drive hybrid models available. The Limited, as driven, which cost $38,490 (drive-away price) has additional features to those of its still well-equipped entry model, $35,490, sibling. These extras include leather-like seats (heated at front with power lumbar support for the driver) a panoramic view camera and self-adjusting/dipping for the LED headlights. There’s nice driving position, dash presentation and space for those in the front seats, while the rear is two adult friendly. Then there’s the self-charging hybrid power system. This consists of a 1.8-litre, four cylinder petrol engine producing 72kW and 142 Nm of torque. Combined with the electric motor/battery pack the total system output is 90kW.
Roger Hart ROAD TEST
With the car’s compact size that means a suitably energetic performance and quick overtaking manoeuvres, but with a claimed overall fuel consumption of just 4.3L/100km and emissions of 97g of CO2/ km. There’s little doubt that earlier hybrid cars were more suited to, and at their best, both economy and performance wise for doing lots of about the town/city driving and commuting, but now through the ever-continuing improvements to hybrid technology that’s all definitely changed. For while they still show their best economy with about town driving when use of their pure electric power can be maximised and 3.8L/100km is possible, they are now also very good for open road driving. That was mainly what I did during my recent 500km with the hybrid CH-R. During this I was keen to experience the driving experience rather than trying for best possible economy, so was impressed, given the roads driven, with the end result of 4.8L/100km shown on the trip computer.
As a comparison the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol (85kW and 185Nm of torque) CH-R’s trip-computer, after driving similar roads showed 7.5L/100km. So in real terms the hybrid used 2.7 litres less per 100km, but then of course had it been all around town driving the difference in the hybrid’s favour would be even greater. While there’s three selectable drive modes, Normal rather than Eco or Sport was best as in this it quickly and silently slots into its electric power supply as soon as circumstances allow. In keeping with their looks, the C-HRs both handled very nicely, with excellent levels of grip from the wide Michelins and poise. In fact – and particularly so with the lighter turbo-petrol – there was a GT86-like feel over Gebbies Pass. Not that that hybrid is too different in this respect, for it carries its extra weight mounted nice and low with the battery under the back seat. But how about the boot? Well, a decent 377 litres can be stowed via the good-sized hatch. Plus there’s space for smaller items next to the space-saver spare. It goes without saying that Toyota’s Safety Sense active safety features come as standard to help you avoid accidents, and do everything possible to save your life if you do have one. This system includes a pre-collision system with autonomous emergency braking, an excellent all speed radar cruise
control, lane departure alert with steering assist, blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert.
FINALE With the current obsession for SUV-like vehicles and higher seating, there’s plenty of opportunities for creating stylish, niche models. That’s exactly what Toyota have done with their quite stunning-looking C-HR multi-purpose compact range, even more so with the arrival of the very nice-to-drive and very economical hybrid versions.

lassic Investments, a UK-based restoration specialist, has completed the ultimate restoration of an awesome 1969 Dodge Charger and is looking for a buyer that wants a no-holds barred piece of American muscle with the added benefit of modern-day reliability. Highly desirable, this iconic model was made famous through the 60s classic film Bullitt as well as the 70s TV show Dukes of Hazzard. This particular example has been upgraded with high-performance components and is ready to be enjoyed in modern traffic. This original R/T car was fully stripped and had all rust removed, before being rebuilt to better than new condition. The original suspension is improved to include adjustable Koni dampers, while steering feel is sharp thanks to polyurethane bushes. The brakes have been upgraded with a new Servo unit, 11-inch discs and rotors at the front and 11-inch uprated drums at the rear. The 440ci Magnum V8 engine is now-fully balanced and running a performance camshaft, a Holley 770 Street Avenger series 4-barrel carburettor and stainless-steel exhaust.

The engine has already been run in, so the car is ready to be enjoyed to the maximum from the moment of purchase. The interior has been comprehensively retrimmed. The structure was soundproofed for comfort on long journeys. All original components are rebuilt including radio, gauges, speedometer, switches and centre console. Editor in Chief at Magneto magazine, David Lillywhite, said: “The Charger looks really good, exactly the right spec (engine, seats etc) and right colour for the car. “It’s obviously up with the Mustang as the most iconic muscle car out there.” Classic Investments carried out the entire restoration in-house, including re-chroming of all parts, reupholstering and restoring seats and interior trim in order to guarantee perfection. Agris Alksnis of Classic Investments said: “More than 3000 hours have been put into making this the ultimate Dodge Charger R/T. For anyone who wants a classic muscle car, but without the fear of unreliability, this is the car for an enthusiast who cannot get enough of iconic cars such as this.”

he global sports car brand APEX, has taken the covers off its stunning new all-electric AP-0 sports car at its global launch event in London. The brand brings a new philosophy to the sports car market, embracing the emotional connection between driver and machine, craftsmanship and pioneering, and design and engineering as cornerstones of its first in-house designed model, the fully electric AP-0. Bringing full electric performance
and complete driver enjoyment, the AP-0 is a celebration of the feeling of being behind the wheel. The design of the AP-0 features, at its core, an ultra-lightweight carbon fibre tub with modular spaceframes and a centre spine for maximum rigidity. Costing from £150,000, the AP-0 goes into production in Q4 2022. The AP-0 is a triumph of how form and function can be combined in one harmonious package. This begins with the front aerodynamic bodywork,
which channels air underneath the car and behind the front wheels, along the body and out below the large rear diffuser. The flat floor helps pin the car to the ground for tremendous cornering ability. This is aided by the low centre of gravity provided by the 90kW floor-mounted battery pack. Together, these features enable the AP-0 to achieve a kerb weight of just 1200kg. By virtue of its cutting-edge powertrain engineering and astonishingly
light weight, the rear-wheel drive AP-0 is capable of 0-100km/h in 2.3 seconds. This rapid acceleration is backed up by an impressive maximum speed of 190mph, underlining the vehicle’s track credentials. Efficiency and a fast charging time are imperative in delivering a luxury, performance electric vehicle for the modern driver. The resultant battery technology at the heart of the vehicle is capable of delivering enough charge to cover up to 320 miles (515km) (WLTP).

Opie riding the Shark The commitment of champion New Zealand jockey Opie Bosson to ensure he is available to ride Te Akau Shark this weekend cannot be questioned. The unflappable hoop will link with the star weight-for-age galloper in Saturday’s Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill after going the extra mile. Bosson made three quickfire trans-Tasman trips across a handful of days. He jetted in to partner Melody Belle into third in last Saturday’s $5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) at Caulfield. The Te Akau stable rider had not been home long at his Pukekawa sheep and beef farm on Sunday when news broke that the Australian Government would follow New Zealand’s lead and enforce all entrants into the country after midnight on Sunday to self-isolate for 14 days. “I had just got home and went out on the farm to do my jobs and was out the back of the farm when Jamie (Richards, trainer) rang me. “He said ‘I’ve got some bad news, you either can’t go to Australia or you have to go right now to the airport’. “I went back home and Emily (wife) packed my bag and booked my ticket and I went straight to the airport.” Bosson said none of it would be possible without the support of his wife, known to racing fans through her broadcast role with Channel 7 in Australia and Trackside here.
Opie Bosson will ride Te Akau Shark this weekend. “She is not doing her Channel 7 role and she has got a bit of leave from Trackside at home as well, so she is looking after the farm as well as Max (the couple’s oneyear-old son).” Bosson was relishing the opportunity to partner with the likes of Melody Belle, Probabeel and in particular Te Akau Shark, who is a $2.10 favourite for the $1m race on Saturday.

Carston happy with Breeders duo Andrew Carston has his two mares in peak condition for what he has revealed is their target race – tomorrow’s Gr.3 Valachi Downs South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) at Riccarton. The Christchurch trainer will produce Ticket To Ride and Monrecour in the set-weights and penalties fillies and mares feature, confident he has both in the right condition to be winning chances. “Both went really well last start and have progressed well out of the race so we’re right on track,” Carston said. “This is the target race for both of them and I don’t think I could have either any better.” Seven-year-old mare Ticket To Ride finished second to Nowhere Man at Ashburton last start, with Monrecour just a nose further back in third. A winner of nine of her 52 starts including the Gr.3 Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) at Riccarton last spring, Ticket To Ride meets her stablemate 4.5kg

better off tomorrow, but Carston would prefer to see some easing in the track for Saturday. She would have carried 56kg on Saturday but a New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) rule change in response to the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in weights raised 2kg to protect jockey health. “It’s a Dead4 at the moment and there is rain in the forecast so if that arrives she’d be better off,” he said. “I am disappointed she carries 58kg though. “She’s only a slight mare and she’s been set for this for months and then two days ago we were told she’d be carrying 2kg more. “It’s disappointing but it is what it is so we’ve got to run with it. “She’s really well but it’s just a concern – the firm track and extra weight. “She’s up to the class, no doubt about that and I can’t fault her condition.” Carston was also delighted with recent stable recruit Mon-
Andrew Carston recour, who transferred from Marton trainer Fraser Auret last month. “We’ve just changed everything with her, tipped her regime upside down. “She’s done a lot of swimming and jumping over the pony fences in the middle of the track and not a lot of fast work.
“She’s taken a huge amount of benefit out of that run. “It was the perfect leadup to Saturday’s feature. “She seems a happy and bright mare.” Monrecour is a $9.50 sixth favourite for the race for stable apprentice Kozzi Asano ahead of Ticket To Ride at $10 for rider Kylie Williams behind favourite Monza Circuito at $5. Carston has nine runners entered for Riccarton, suggesting Sanctify and Shock Prospect were the pick of his undercard entries. Asano has eight rides on the card as he chases the premiership, already notching 72 wins to be just five wins behind frontrunner Lisa Allpress. It has yet to be seen how a New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing directive that no jockeys can travel inter-island for rides at present will affect his title chances. “It’s not ideal in a premiership race for anyone,” Carston said. “It’s not going to help him but it’s not going to help Lisa or Sam (Collett) either.”
Aussie trip on the line A tilt at the Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m) remains a remote possibility for Cambridge three-year-old Tibetan. Trainer Andrew Campbell will run the son of Shocking this weekend, most likely in tomorrow’s J Swap Contractors Bay Of Plenty Cup (2100m) at Tauranga, though he also remains in the field for the 2100m maiden at Avondale today. Despite his maiden status, Tibetan has placed in the Gr.3 Wellington Stakes (1600m) behind fellow Australian Derby hopeful Scorpz, then pushed that horse to a head when second in the Listed 3YO Salver (2100m) at Ellerslie before finishing fifth in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) and fourth in the Gr.2 Avondale Guineas (2100m), both also at Ellerslie. He finished 13th in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie last start after he was caught three wide in running. “He was really disappointing in the Derby but he had a week off afterwards and he’s freshened up nicely,” Campbell said. “His work has been good and he’s going just as well as he was leading into the Derby when he had good form around Scorpz and those sort of horses. “How he goes on Saturday will determine where he goes afterwards.” Conditions were posted as a Dead5 at Tauranga yesterday morning with Avondale recorded at a Dead4 at the same time, Campbell saying he would be swayed to racing at the latter should significant rain fall in West Auckland. “Virtually every race he’s run has been on a hard track and we’re just looking for some easing of the ground,” Campbell said. “He still holds a nomination for Sydney but we’re probably 100 to one to go there. “He’d have to win and win well on Saturday. If he hits the line well in behind them, we can still look at backing him up at Awapuni a week later (in the Gr.3 Higgins Concrete Manawatu Classic, 2000m).” Should Tibetan earn a trip to Randwick, Campbell would put him in the care of Australian-based Kiwi trainer Trent Busuttin with the restrictions on travel due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “He’s in great order. I couldn’t be happier with him. It’s just that his run was so bad in the Derby that it’s raised doubts but if you forgive him one bad run he’s been going well.” Tibetan is a $7.50 third favourite for the Bay Of Plenty Cup with TAB bookmakers behind Swords Drawn at $3.20 and London Banker at $4. He is at $51 for the Australian Derby. Meanwhile, Campbell could also have a runner in the Gr.1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 9 with Dundeel three-year-old gelding Aqueduct set to enhance his claims in the coming weeks.

EYES ON THE PRIZE
The Mid Canterbury Girls’ cricket side had their second outing of the season last weekend, taking on South Canterbury at the Ashburton Domain. In what will be the side’s last outing for the season following the cancellation of community cricket this week due to Covid-19, the girls made a winning farewell to the season. Taking the bat first, Mid Canterbury made an imposing 134-8 from their 30 overs out in the middle and then rolled their South Canterbury counterparts for under 100 to record a comprehensive win. Forty-year curse strikes again for Tokyo First, the cancellation in 1940. Then, the mass boycott in Moscow in 1980. Forty years on, the upcoming Tokyo Games are the “cursed Olympics” once again, Japan’s finance minister said, in remarks that could stir controversy at a time when his government is scrambling to quash speculation that the coronavirus epidemic could derail the world’s biggest sporting event this year. “It’s a problem that’s happened every 40 years – it’s the cursed Olympics – and that’s a fact,” Taro Aso said in a parliamentary committee. Japan had won the bid to host the Summer and Winter Olympics in 1940 – in Tokyo and Sapporo, respectively – but both Games were cancelled due to the Second World War. Japan is not making any preparations to postpone the 2020 Summer Olympics, the government’s top spokesman Chief Cabinet Secre-
tary Yoshihide Suga, said yesterday, stressing Tokyo’s resolve to host the event as scheduled despite the global spread of coronavirus. Suga said the government would continue with preparations to hold the July 24 to August 9 Games as scheduled, working closely with organisations such as the International Olympic Committee (IOC). “We’re not making any adjustments to postpone the Games,” Suga told parliament when asked by a lawmaker whether the government was making plans to cancel or postpone the event. His comments come amid mounting concerns about whether the Games can proceed as planned, with the rapidly spreading virus panicking financial markets and bringing business and social activity around the world to a standstill. Many sports events have been cancelled or postponed. Even if Japan can contain the
coronavirus outbreak, the Olympic Games “would not make sense” if other countries cannot send their athletes, Aso said. “As the prime minister said, it’s desirable to hold the Olympics in an environment where everyone feels safe and happy. “But that’s not something Japan alone can decide,” he said. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that Group of Seven leaders had agreed to support a “complete” Olympics, but dodged questions about whether any of the leaders had brought up the possibility of postponement. The IOC has remained committed to staging the Tokyo Games as planned, saying after a meeting with international sports federations that measures against the virus were delivering results. But it is facing growing voices of dissent from top athletes worried about their health.

D E L L E C N CA The Rakaia Golf Club has called off two events in response to Covid-19. By Adam Burns
adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
It has been confirmed upcoming golf events in Rakaia will not go ahead. The Rakaia Golf Club confirmed on its Facebook page yesterday the 27-hole tournament scheduled to be played on Sun-
day would not go ahead due to concerns around Covid-19. It follows an announcement made on Wednesday that the Lions tournament which was to be played on March 27 was also cancelled. Yesterday, the Tinwald Golf Club reiterated health and safety
precautions to members on its Facebook page. “We will have hand sanitisers in prominent areas and request that members and guests utilise these regularly whilst on the premises. The club also urged members to have a minimum 10-minute
interval between tee times, and for players not to use ball washers or remove the pin whilst putting. The sweeping response to the world-wide coronavirus pandemic has led to mass postponements of sporting competitions and events.
Adams, OKC all negative for Covid-19 Steven Adams, his Oklahoma City Thunder team-mates and members of the management team have all tested negative for coronavirus. The playing group and members of the staff were required to be tested after their game against the Utah Jazz was called off late last week due to the threat of the illness. Before the game, Jazz centre Rudy Gobert had been listed as questionable due to illness. Reports suggested Jazz coach Quin Snyder was waiting for Gobert’s test result to come back before making a final decision on his star centre’s availability, and said the thought was Gobert would play if he was cleared. Instead, the test came back positive and the match was suspended moments before tip-off. Staff and players from both teams were tested for the virus, with Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell also testing positive. The Oklahoma City Thunder announced yesterday that everyone in their organisation who had been tested did not have the virus. “The Oklahoma City Thunder consulted with infectious disease experts for a recommendation on the players and staff who needed Covid-19 testing based on their exposure at the game on March 11. All results have come back negative”. Since the league was suspended indefinitely, more players have tested positive for the virus, including Pistons forward Christian Wood, Nets forward Kevin Durant, and three of Durant’s Nets teammates, who have not been named.

NZ Rugby are plotting the right course By Patrick McKendry
F
or many New Zealand sports fans and professional athletes, this weekend represents a unique challenge, the time a new reality will hit. It was business as usual seven days ago but now most sport has been cancelled and over the next few days, weeks or months its absence will be keenly felt by all, even the most casual of supporters. Those who experienced the Canterbury earthquakes will be familiar with the anxiety which gripped many within the region and which is now taking hold around the world. A constant state of uncertainty isn’t good for people and that’s what you get when you effectively can’t trust the ground beneath your feet or the roof over your head.
Safe as houses? Not quite. The coronavirus is completely different of course, but the anxiety about how long this is going to go on for is similar. Humans are social creatures and restrictions on gatherings and fears that even the most casual interaction may be dangerous – especially for parents and grandparents – is unnatural and worrying. There will be those who believe sport is the least of anyone’s worries when we’re talking about a global pandemic, and that’s true to an extent. And yet, as we know, it can also galvanise communities. It’s difficult to measure the effects the Crusaders had on a troubled community when they excelled during the 2011 Super Rugby season, despite the constant aftershocks and the fact they had to play every match
away from home, but it’s safe to say they helped. A lot. Which is one of the reasons why New Zealand Rugby are doing the right thing in planning for a domestic competition between the five Kiwi Super Rugby teams now that the Sanzaar-run competition has been suspended and in all likelihood cancelled this year. As a responsible employer in these unique and trying times, NZ Rugby must investigate ways to get its employees back to work as quickly and efficiently as possible, all while putting the players’ health and safety and that of the wider public first. And for those wondering how such games will be played amidst a pandemic, well, of course, NZ Rugby will follow government guidelines, and if the Ministry of Health gives them the go-ahead, well why not play?
The point is NZ Rugby has to be optimistic and prepare for both best and worst-case scenarios. It’s easy to be sceptical and try to find excuses not to play, but NZ Rugby doesn’t have that luxury – the organisation’s duty is to clear the way for games to be played again as soon as possible. Having New Zealand’s 115 Super Rugby players taking the field again (albeit probably behind closed doors) in a fortnight would be the best-case scenario and all those connected to the game; broadcasters, administrators, coaches, players, sports writers and fans will be better off. All Blacks coach Ian Foster made an excellent point in an interview with Radio Sport when he said: “We don’t know when it’s going to come but that’s really irrelevant right now. “What’s important is that we give ourselves some short term
tasks that are meaningful and get stuck into it.” He added: “The minute we start to think too far in the future, that’s when we can start to catastrophise things.” Like many in our society at the moment, our professional athletes are probably finding it hard to find the motivation to work hard. As Foster says, the key is to keep focusing on the short term, and on what you can control. For many of us, a 10- to 12week competition featuring the Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Crusaders and Highlanders would be a massive boost and exactly what the doctor ordered. If it’s a shorter competition due to changed circumstances, then fine. If it doesn’t happen for the same reasons, then okay. Trying is the key – we have to keep trying.

■■ OPINION
A time like no other in sport O ne of the biggest debates during the infamous 1981 Springboks tour was around whether sport and politics should mix. The sheer ubiquity and immensity of Covid-19 and the far-reaching implications of many governments’ responses to the crisis has forced sport, politics, culture and communities to be thrust together into the whirlwind of action, adjustment and uncertainty. It has been surreal, and in hindsight it seems absurd I penned a preview of the Chappell-Hadlee series only seven days ago with no reference or indicators of what was to follow. Such is the easy-moving flow of this virus, whilst borders shut down, boundaries of who is affected are rendered boundless. An 80-year-old in Italy is susceptible, but so is Kevin Durant. Sport, of course, is only one part of this puzzle, however in the professional era it has been one of the biggest industries implicated. You would be foolish to think it is just the players impacted,
Adam Burns
SPORTS REPORTER
it covers a wide spectrum from supporters, coaches, trainers, administrators, broadcasters, caterers and of course their respective families. Even this lowly sports reporter will need to make some adjustments. The pressure which is part and parcel of being an elite athlete has suddenly shifted onto the administrators and how they navigate their way through an event which has probably caused the biggest jolt to the sporting world since World War Two. The biggest balancing act for these administrators has been a balance of adhering to guidelines enforced by the applicable authorities, whilst averting as much economic sting as possible. It has raised brutal questions
of organisations such as the NRL and Basketball New Zealand, who are in high stakes predicaments to ensure survival. The NRL is going about it alone because as far as it’s concerned, it can’t afford not to. While chief executive Todd Greenburg would not admit it, there has been suggestions that the NRL’s finances are tied up in broadcast deals worth $2 billion. Even the views of the most prolific rugby league player of all time was not enough to sway the game’s administrators. The most glaringly obvious question is what kind of business acumen is this competition running off that it has no contingencies for an emergency situation. Back at home, Basketball New Zealand is reportedly in financial turmoil with the biggest factor being that it is dependent on TAB dividends. Slight issue with there with such little sport being played. Basketball also is one of the very few who are ploughing ahead with community ball amid a raft of other codes uniformly calling stumps for now.
The Tokyo Olympics are due to start in July and while the Japanese government are prepared to staunch it out publicly in face of a global pandemic, a turn-around of monumental proportions to the situation would need to occur for these Olympics to happen. For us at the Ashburton Guardian, sourcing our breadand-butter sporting content is clearly going to require some rethinking, with few events and competition taking place in the interim. However it may present some intriguing opportunities to replace those previews and match wraps with profiles, colour stories or maybe a trip down memory lane. One reality which has forced us sporting diehards to reconsider is alternatives. Sport for many offers escapism, an outlet from life’s hurdles, something to discuss around the water cooler, an excuse to gather. How this plays out is of course anyone’s guess. But for now, we will just have to make do with the new norm.
■■RUGBY LEAGUE
Warriors calling up the reinforcements By Michael Burgess The Warriors are flying over four playing reinforcements to Australia, to be utilised once their 14 day self-isolation period across the Tasman has been completed. Prop Agnatius Paasi, middle forward Jazz Tevaga, back rower Josh Curran and outside back Gerard Beale all departed for Sydney on Wednesday afternoon. The quartet missed the round one game against the Newcastle Knights due to various injuries, but are all expected back in the coming weeks, and would be in line to bolster the squad. It’s the clearest sign yet that the club is expecting to be based in Australia beyond this week’s game against Canberra, as those players won’t be available until the scheduled round four match against the Wests Tigers, but it’s also a pragmatic step. “We need to get them over there,” explained CEO Cameron George. “If we don’t get them into that 14-day cycle, obviously every day that goes by, that puts them back. “The sooner we get them there, the better.” The travelling players will be accompanied by a physio and a trainer, who will attempt to simulate game-like conditions in training, as much as is feasible with a group of four. “They have to be ready to play on, if we are playing, as soon as that 15th day hits,” said George. The quartet won’t be staying with the main Warriors’ group at
Gerard Beale is one of the Warriors heading into self-isolation. Kingscliff on the Gold Coast. Instead they will be sent to what George described as a “remote location”, that has “all the facilities they need”. While the scenario for the NRL beyond this weekend remains in a state of flux, George said the Warriors are gearing for a longer stay, contingent on receiving the necessary support. “That is the desire – it is just about making sure we get everything that we need from the NRL in unique circumstances,” said George. “But if we are in, we’re in. “We are clarifying a number of things.
“[It] could be a bit of fun for a few months. “We have to commit to the competition one way or the other. “If we come home, we are out. If we are committing, it’s to the life of the competition, however long it is.” George and Warriors chairman Rob Croot had a video conference with the team’s leadership group on Wednesday, and the CEO said the players were adapting well to the situation, over the “initial shock” and getting into a routine. But George also said the Warriors would not stand in the way
of any players who want to return home after this weekend. “It’s important they understand the club will support them as individuals, with humans and families and that is foremost in our mind.” Most community sport in New Zealand has shut down for the foreseeable future in response to the Covid-19 situation, with league, football and cricket joining the growing list on Wednesday, but George doesn’t see any incongruity with the NRL trying to continue. He said the club is comfortable with the health advice received through the NRL, who are making the “right decisions for the right reasons”. George also said that comparisons with professional and amateur sport weren’t always relevant. “[There are] a lot of competitions being cancelled that maybe don’t live in the controlled environment like we do,” said George. “It helps us as a professional rugby league club. I suspect once you get out in the more amateur competitions, they don’t have that controlled environment so that is a big difference.” George also confirmed that the Warriors’ reserve grade side has been canned for the season, with the indefinite postponement of the NSW Cup. “It’s really tough for those guys but it was a decision we had to make to get some clarity about our future,” said George.
■■TENNIS
Kiwi star feeling the brunt of Covid-19 Kiwi tennis player Marcus Daniell faces a difficult choice, with his girlfriend in isolation in the United States, with some of the Covid-19 symptoms. The world No. 49-ranked doubles player already has to deal with the current shutdown of the ATP tour, which was recently extended to June 7, and has severe implications for all professional players. But it’s his personal dilemma that is currently front of mind, with his partner Caroline in self-isolation in a Connecticut cabin, after her New York-based law firm shut down when a staff member contracted the coronavirus. “She has tried to get a test for the last few days and has just been told ‘no, no, no’,” Daniell said. “And that’s with symptoms and having been in close contact with confirmed cases as her law firm got hit by it. “It’s because she is not part of the ‘at-risk population’ (she is 30 years old), which is fair enough, but she doesn’t feel there is enough information about when it’s okay to be around people who are at risk. “She’s had two of the symptoms, sore throat and a dry cough. She hasn’t had the fever but it’s enough to say, ‘shit, is this it?’” Daniell’s partner had been self-isolating in New York, but moved into a cabin outside the city two days ago. “If she feels safe, she’s going to move in with her parents but she is sort of freaking out about the potential risks and how long does it stay incubating in you. “These are not easy decisions.” Daniell is also concerned about the general response in the United States to the outbreak. “She was in New York until a couple of days ago and there were far too many people who were not taking it seriously and still hanging out in bars and stuff,” said Daniell. “In a population like that, when everyone is so close together I think there is going to be a huge amount of unofficial cases.” Now the couple face a tough decision. “Either I go over there, self-isolate for two weeks and then move in with her parents for at least a few months,” said Daniell. “Or she comes here, and we self-isolate on the West Coast for few weeks.” Both scenarios are far from perfect. “She is worried about leaving her parents who are a bit older,” said Daniell. “And she has to think about, can she retain her job if she comes over here? For me, I’ve got to think about … can I do anything for tennis if I am there? I think everything would be shut down. “I don’t really know what to do. It’s this sort of thing that you want to be with your partner for but it feels like one of us is going to have to make a shitty decision.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Doing nothing is one of the hardest things for your active sign, especially this time of year. But if you can manage it, 20 minutes of nothingness will set you up for hours of productivity. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’ll learn what you want to know and you then, because you’re responsible and smart, you’ll also learn what you didn’t want to know. This is the knowledge you’ll need to delegate like a boss. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): “Forgive many things in others, nothing in yourself,” suggested the poet Ausonius. The ancient world was harsh! These days, you’ll do better to extend the same kindness inward and outward. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Confidence is gained by taking risks. It’s the only route really. Pretending to be confident will usually lead to taking the actual risk necessary to achieve confidence. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll be a thought leader today, whether you want to be or not. The responsibility is something to consider before you make a move. “What if everybody did the same thing?” is a relevant question. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It doesn’t matter if it takes a week or a year to read a book, involving yourself in the world between book covers is one of the best things you could possibly do for your inner experience. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): What if you believed that the well was never dry? In some ways, this is true. There’s a time to budget and a time not to worry so much about it. A scarcity mentality won’t serve you today. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): New ventures, new chaos. Excitement and disorder are linked. And if you want another way to think about it, maybe it’s not “disorder” so much as an “extra order” we just don’t understand yet. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The endeavor that appeals to you will be the one in which you are able to radiate your personal style. If you cannot add who you are to what you do, it will not seem worth doing at all. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Your experience will be ever-enhanced by sharing. It’s a way to live in the past and the present simultaneously. You’ll forward what you love and enjoy the enthusiasm that ripples back to you. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): As for those negative thoughts that serve no one, the first step is to be aware you’re having them. Many people tune out the din as one would tune out the traffic noises from a freeway next to home. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): A dog sees your hands as absolutely magical. They can open doors and are the conduits to another world. To feel wonder, take another point of view.

BBNZ has cancelled or suspended several national events in response to the crisis.
