Gita bites Canterbury BY MATT MARKHAM

Future bright on the court P14
The full impact of former tropical cyclone Gita may have come overnight, but there’s no respite for the Canterbury region heading into today with more rain on the cards. Mid Canterbury looked set to escape the worst of the storm with the heart of it running through Banks Peninsula and then further north, but a severe weather warn-

Gita bites Canterbury region From P1 More than 50mm of rain fell in Ashburton during the day yesterday, but remarkably, as of last night the township had escaped any major flooding. Significant accumulations of rainfall had been set down for Methven and Mt Somers with close to 100mm predicted overnight. Yesterday afternoon, Christchurch Mayor, Lianne Dalziel declared a state of emergency for Christchurch City, including Banks Peninsula due to the impact of the storm with grave concerns of flooding in low-lying areas still impacted on by the earthquakes. “The full impact of the storm will be felt overnight and tomorrow morning,” she said when making the announcement. “We are expecting homes to be flooded.” The Ashburton District Council bounced into action yesterday afternoon as well announcing precautionary boil water notices for the Montalto, Mt Somers and Methven water supplies advising residents connected to these schemes to boil their drinking water, and water used in food preparation and for hygiene purposes for at least three minutes
before consumption. Council also issued a general warning to residents – particularly motorists travelling around the region today with the high possibility of debris and flooding on the roads after the wind and rain. That means drivers should be cautious on the roads, and any unsecure items should be stored in a safe place, Council Emergency Management Officer James Lamb said. “There have already been reports of minor surface flooding on some roads and storm water drains overflowing. During this time, it’s important motorists drive to the conditions and are mindful of water on the road,” Lamb said. Council also advised yesterday that they would continue with kerbside collection this morning as per normal despite the weather concerns. Schools around the district yesterday finished early to allow for staff development, so buses weren’t affected but schools were advising last night that they were set to monitor the situation before making an announcement this morning around whether or not they would be open for the day.

Windfall schools ‘deserving’ By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
Other local schools aren’t concerned about missing out when Allenton School and Ashburton Intermediate receive a $10 million windfall for upgrades later this year. Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced plans on Monday to complete “badly needed” renovation and building projects at the two selected schools in response to district growth, but that won’t leave other schools lacking money or enrolments, say principals. “Obviously all schools want
something, we’d all like more funding – but we’re not complaining,” said Fairton School Principal Rebekah Clements. “Our classrooms are up-todate, and it’s really good for the other schools that will now also be able to have up-to-date safe, compliant, child friendly facilities.” She said the ministry had already provided funding for them to upgrade their pool changing rooms, and did not feel like their current classrooms needed any work. Hipkins said yesterday that Ashburton Intermediate and Allenton were selected because they are both “hard up against

Hampstead School had seen an increase in enrolments, and as a result are also currently undergoing renovations to add four new classrooms, new bathrooms and improve asphalt areas. “We’ve had many years of ongoing improvements and we’re happy with what we’ve got,” he said. Falloon linked to leadership hopefuls By Colin WillisCroft
Colin.w@theguardian.Co.nz
Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon has strong connections to all five candidates for the National Party leadership. In the past two days Steven Joyce and Mark Mitchell have thrown their hats into the ring for the leadership and Falloon has worked alongside both men before. “Prior to the election I worked with Mark Mitchell to strengthen youth justice policy when he was the responsible minister,” Falloon said. “He came to Mid Canterbury and spoke to several hundred people about issues with youth crime in Ashburton. “Following that we used some of the ideas that came up in that meeting, and they helped form our policy for the election.” Falloon’s history with Joyce runs even deeper. “I worked alongside Steven Joyce as his senior adviser in government for five years across the range of portfolios he had: finance, economic development, tertiary education and science & innovation.” Last week Falloon revealed he knew the other three candidates – Amy Adams, Simon Bridges and Judith Collins – very well. “I sit on the Justice Select Committee with Amy, and she helped me earlier this year drafting my Member’s Bill to ensure repeat offenders receive longer sentences.

“As my neighbouring MP we have quite a bit to do with each other locally, she’s got a strong interest in recent problems with crime in the Ashburton District. “Two of the areas I’ve focused on since I was elected have been Regional Development and Immigration, they’re both hugely important issues for Mid Canterbury. Simon is the National Party spokesman for both portfolios, so we’ve worked together closely in recent months on how to ensure our region keeps growing strongly. “As Transport spokeswoman Judith has strongly backed my push to extend the highway between Ashburton and Christchurch to four lanes. She’s been an invaluable source of advice to me as a new MP in opposition.” Falloon said all five candidates were strong leaders within the party, and any one of them would make an effective leader and future Prime Minister. “I’m continuing to meet with the leadership candidates one on one, and I’ll make a decision once I’ve spoken to them all about their vision for New Zealand and for Mid Canterbury.” However he does not intend to announce publicly how he plans to vote next Tuesday. “The mood in the party is very positive. I’m focused on holding the new government to account for their promises, and challenging them on the policies that will have a harmful effect on our area.” QUEEN SIZE Bed + Base

All set for local annual show By susan sandys
SuSan.S@theguardian.Co.nz
Dogs use facial expressions when communicating with humans, recent research suggests. But as is often the case, scientists have discovered something other people seem to know already. They include Ashburton Kennel Association members Gary and Laura Kennedy, who are gearing up for the association’s annual show at the weekend. There is likely to be plenty of canine smiles at the event, to be held at the Allenton Rugby Club grounds and expected to attract over 300 dogs and their owners from throughout the South Island. The Kennedys will be there with two of their five Dogue De Bordeaux pooches, Red and Flame.

“She’s a very smiley dog,” said Laura of 16-month-old Red, who is already quite happy about the show, enjoying being bathed, combed and having her wrinkles, ears, eyes and teeth cleaned. Gary and Laura have attained many an award for their Dogue De Bordeaux dogs, which they have been showing over the past five years. They attend shows throughout Canterbury, as well as the bigger events in the North Island. They have high hopes for sixmonth-old Flame this weekend, after the promise he showed at his first show at Mandeville about four weeks ago, achieving a coveted puppy in group award. They could tell not only when their Dogue De Bordeaux dogs were happy, but also when they

were nervous, as they would lick their lips and noses. The dogs have droopy faces and looked decidedly bored with sitting in the rain to have their photograph taken for the Guardian. However, their droopy faces are also their strength, according to Gary, as this gave them a “smooshy” appeal, and they were sought after. The couple run a kennel for the breed and have a long waiting list for puppies. The UK research, for which results were released late last year, showed that a group of dogs did not produce facial expressions when presented with food, but did when receiving attention from humans. This suggested dogs in general attempted to communicate by making facial expressions.

■ RELAY FOR LIFE
In brief
Youngsters get to channel their inner superheroes BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Days out from Relay for Life, children at Tiddlywinks Preschool are channelling their inner superheroes. Staff at the preschool are gearing up to partake as the Wonder Teachers, and yesterday children at the school donned their own capes and masks in support. Teacher Amanda Moore said it was the third year the preschool had been involved, and they were looking forward to embracing the idea of Everyday Heroes. They had even prepared a glowing baton to use throughout the event, she said. “And we’re planning to do it properly … have someone on the track at all times.” The preschool had already held a movie night fundraiser and yesterday a variety of characters were present – from Batman and Cat-woman to Spiderman and Superman. Relay for Life will kick off at 4pm on February 24 at the Ashburton Showgrounds and run
for 18 hours. Funds raised will be donated to the Cancer Society to benefit locals living with cancer.

said. The purpose of the competition was not only to have a good time and provide an opportunity for fishing and com-
petition, but also to raise awareness of the river environment. Rakaia River Fishing Promotions, which organises the
event, put money back into the river. Projects over the past year include contributing to installation of a boat ramp at North Rakaia huts, and providing feed for smolt releases on a tributary release programme. “When you sit back and have a look, it makes you quite proud of what we are setting out to achieve,” Lee said. Lee said the event was a great success, with a strong following, and it had a strong future ahead, with many younger anglers and potential committee members coming up in the ranks. This year there will be $52,000 of prizes on offer, and compering on the Friday and Saturday nights will be Ashburton radio DJ Phill Hooper.

Police have named the man they are seeking in connection with a firearms incident in the Northland town of Ahipara. Rawiri Teruru Ihaka, 44, who has a warrant for his arrest, is considered dangerous and police say he should not be approached. Ihaka is wanted in connection with a firearm being discharged at a property on Monday. The incident led to Ahipara School being put in lockdown for several hours and cordons set up around Takahe Rd. Ihaka is described as being of medium build and 1.82m tall, and has a tattoo of a cross on his right forearm. - NZN

That will be the case this week at the three-day 35th annual Rakaia Salmon Fishing Competition, which kicks off on Friday. Tinder was off the cards for dozens of the district’s singletons on the weekend, as they flocked to the Hampstead Rugby Clubrooms for a spot of good old fashioned speed dating instead. The Hinds Young Farmers held their biennial speed dating night on Saturday in the name of fun, fundraising and potential love finding. Mary Holmes, part of the organising committee, said the evening was a great success, and the conversation “looked to be flowing between the couples”. “Some hilarious and often bizarre questions were overheard by the drinks waiters … some daters seemed reluctant to move on when the bell rang to indicate the next date.” Other daters left interesting notes on their dating forms which were handed in at the end of the event, she said. Prior to the evening two participants were selected for free makeovers from Tanglez Hair Studio, and after the evening many daters stuck around for a drink and the dance at an after party, with tunes delivered by DJ Powerhouse. “We put in a fair bit of work organising the event – so many little details to get right! But it was worth it in the end,” Holmes said. “Now we provide contact details to matches and the rest is up to them … I hope to hear of a few solid matches in the next few weeks!”

■ FILIPINO HELPERS
Delivering help to those in need By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
A Mid Cantabrian clan of Filipino friends are quickly earning a good name for themselves around the district as they deliver help to those in need. The group, known as Pagong Ako Kuyang (PAK) or “I am turtle brother”, formed at the end of last year have already helped stock up the Salvation Army Foodbanks, completed chores on behalf of Ashburton’s elderly, and on Friday, completed a donation project at Ashburton College. Member Brian Reodique said the latest project came about somewhat “spontaneously”, after hearing that some of his son’s classmates were unable to bring a device to their classes. From this year, all Ashburton College students
are required to bring a tablet or computer to school, so Reodique suggested to PAK that they donate tablets to the college for the new entrants that cannot afford their own. The group met with principal Ross Preece and head of junior school Carolyn Clough to hand over two new tablets on Friday, and they were received with much gratitude. Also on the cards for PAK is a project at Ashburton Hospital maternity ward, where the group will soon be donating welcoming gifts for new babies and their families. Member John Paul Belarmino said though PAK was founded as a group of Filipino immigrants, they are open to anybody interested in joining and help them promote charitable causes, regardless of their nationality.

Plain, Flavoured or Crumbed Sainey Marong Rolleston where he was fixated on renting a property, and he says there was an argument. “She started yelling at me,” Marong said. He said “that voice, that screaming, that yelling was agitating me” and the dispute “triggered something very serious”. “The only method I could use to stop it was to compress her neck,” he said. Asked by defence counsel Jonathan Krebs if he meant to kill her, Marong replied, “I have no motive to cause any harm, I just did it to silence her.” Duckmanton’s family in the public gallery were upset by Marong’s description of events. Marong himself used a tissue to wipe his eyes. Marong says he didn’t realise that Duckmanton was dead until the next morning. He says he was so “disrupted” that he never paid her any attention because “her mouth and eyes were open” which reminded him of “the animals that normally get slaughtered at my workplace”. The Crown claims its case against the butcher originally from Gambia is “overwhelming”. It claims DNA samples taken from Duckmanton, and from samples found where her body was dumped, allegedly belong to Marong. Marong, whose internet history in the days before the killing showed searches for necrophilia, denied having sex with her dead body. The trial, before Justice Cameron Mander, continues today. - NZME

Insanity defence ruled out Medical experts concluded Sainey Marong did not have a defence of insanity before standing trial for the alleged murder of Renee Duckmanton. During a dramatic day in the High Court at Christchurch yesterday, 33-year-old Gambian-born butcher Marong admitted strangling the Christchurch sex worker in May 2016 and setting her body on fire. But he claimed he was insane at the time, suffering mental impairment and delusional, psychotic thoughts which began after voluntarily stopping his insulin medication early in 2016. Marong spent the day on the witness stand to repeatedly explain that he was “disconnected from reality” at the time he killed Duckmanton, and that from May 6-17, he was poisoned by kidney failure that resulted in urine “travelling in my brain”. Cruising past prostitutes and paying them for sex were the only ways a “hypersexual” Marong could calm his delusional thoughts, the jury heard. Crown prosecutor Pip Currie asked Marong under cross-examination if he was telling the court he was insane at the time. “Definitely,” he replied. But Currie said forensic clinical psychiatrists who completed reports on Marong concluded that he did not meet the criteria for a defence of insanity. Medical experts found Marong to exaggerate symptoms, become histrionic, and display significant narcissistic traits, the court heard. One psychiatrist concluded that Marong had a “considerable sense of entitlement and grandiosity”, along with a high propensity to deception and manipulation. Marong denied telling one that he found sex workers to be “dirty, immoral and inferior”. He also admitted under cross-examination lying to psychiatrists but claimed he was deluded at the time. Marong admitted picking up 22-yearold Duckmanton from Christchurch’s red light district on May 14, 2016 and engaging her services for sex. Somewhere around Templeton they stopped on the roadside and had sex in the backseat of his car, Marong said. Afterwards, Duckmanton wanted to return to Manchester St, saying the “job is done”. But Marong wanted to continue to

OUR VIEW
Are you prepared for disaster? W
elcome to Gita-Fever, the cyclone that’s gripped a nation and forced life to stray away from the normal. It’s a natural event that’s broadened our horizons when it comes to understanding the power and potential of a tropical cyclone and it’s an event that may just show how well-prepared Kiwis are should trouble hit. Remember those ads that used to appear on the television a few years back about being prepared for a natural disaster with the guy from Shortland Street walking down the middle of a motorway?
Those were all done in preparation for the arrival of things like Gita. We should never be in a position to stand up and say we weren’t ready for something like this, because we have been warned. Yet, you can’t help but wonder how many people actually
listened and heeded some of the advice being given. It could be easy to take it for granted and believe that it might never happen to you, but there’s just as much chance it could as there is that it couldn’t. It often takes a disaster to happen right in front of our eyes to make us take action – so many people, including this editor, were so unprepared for what unfolded after the Christchurch earthquakes that they were found wanting and only through the kindness of organisations and donations of good-hearted people did many make it through.
There’s a lot to be said for having a box stacked quietly away with a few essentials in it – torches, candles and water. Preparation is really the key. The Guardian decided to be prepared yesterday. You will have noticed that we’ve doublebagged and rolled your newspaper today to try and ensure you receive a dry product no matter what the weather might be doing. The only thing out of our control is when it comes to delivery and although Joyce and the team will do the best they can, if it’s not safe to do so, we won’t be doing it.
As this column was being written, there was a lot of uncertainty about what the night ahead was to bring. Christchurch was in a state of civil emergency, rain was falling heavily and there was no sign of it letting up, so things were very much in the dark. We can predict many things in life, but we can’t predict the weather and there’s still every possibility that we will have woken up this morning to sunshine and the birds chirping. But being prepared doesn’t cost anything. So, let’s hope, that if we need it, we will be prepared.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Wednesday, February 21, the 52nd day of 2018. There are 313 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On February 21, 1965, black Muslim leader and civil rights activist Malcolm X, 39, was shot to death inside Harlem’s Audubon Ballroom in New York by assassins identified as members of the Nation of Islam. (Three men were convicted of murder and imprisoned; all were eventually paroled.) On this date: In 1437, James I, King of Scots, 42, was assassinated in Perth by a group of conspirators led by Walter, Earl of Atholl; his 6-year-old son succeeded him as James II. In 1513, Pope Julius II, who commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, died nearly four months after the project was completed. In 1613, Mikhail Romanov, 16, was unanimously chosen by Russia’s national assembly to be czar, beginning a dynasty that would last three centuries. In 1916, the World War One Battle of Verdun began in France as German forces attacked; the French were able to prevail after 10 months of fighting. In 1945, during the World War Two Battle of Iwo Jima, the escort carrier USS Bismarck Sea was sunk by kamikazes with the loss of 318 men. In 1947, inventor Edwin H. Land publicly demonstrated his Polaroid Land camera, which used self-developing film to produce a black and white photograph in 60 seconds. In 1958, the USS Gudgeon (SS567) became the first American submarine to complete a roundthe-world cruise, eight months after departing from Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. In 1972, President Richard M. Nixon began his historic visit to China as he and his wife, Pat, arrived in Beijing. In 1975, former Attorney

I
n 2017, there were 182 recorded vehicle crashes in the Ashburton District. That’s 182 too many. The Ashburton District Council takes road safety seriously and is involved in a number of initiatives to help keep our roads safe. This role extends well beyond the maintenance of the district’s roading network. For example, the council is a key partner in the Ashburton Road Safety coordinating committee, alongside the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), the police, AA and other local organisations. A member of the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association has also joined the committee recently to maintain a strong connection with our district’s schools. Councillor Liz McMillan chairs the meetings, which focus on road safety issues in the district. Among the benefits of bringing together these key agencies are shared understanding about the work being done and staying up-to-date on current trends. Of the 182 crashes recorded in 2017, nearly 40 per cent of them involved alcohol as a contributing factor. There were three fatal crashes during this time and alcohol was an influence in each.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Reducing drink driving is one of the four target areas we have for road safety this year, along with intersections, young drivers and speed. Each target area is highly relevant for our district. The council supports the annual Community Alcohol Action Plan that Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Services (Acads) co-ordinates. Last year’s message was “get home safe with all your mates” and the focus was on ensuring anybody consuming alcohol had a safe and sober ride home. Young drivers (between the age of 15-24) are involved in the most crashes of any age group in the district. If you are in this age group, perhaps consider doing a defensive driving course. It will only take a small amount of your time, but will help set you up with great driving skills for life. A quarter of crashes in the Ashburton District happen as
a result of drivers pulling out in front of others at intersections. Motorists are being reminded to check again after looking both ways at intersections. The council keeps a record of the highest risk intersections and curves in the district and works on improvements such as new line markings and signs each year. Overall, the council maintains the fourth largest roading network in the country. Its Roading Worx campaign was recently launched to keep our community up-to-date with maintenance work and major roading projects in the district. Motorists need to pay attention to roadworks and slow to 30km/h when driving through them. The speed limit is lowered in stretches of roadworks to protect workers and protect you. Travelling on a roadworks site can be unpredictable as the range of work being carried out varies and the road may need time to set. Speeding can damage the work and means the site will be under construction for longer. It also heightens the risk of losing control of, or damaging, your vehicle when driving across freshly laid chip or hitting a pot hole. You can keep up to date with roadworks in the district by visit-

ing www.ashburtondc.govt.nz/ our-services/transport/Pages/ Roading-Worx If you know you are going to encounter roadworks on your journey, allow extra travel time to accommodate any delays. Sticking to the speed limit gives you the best chance of staying safe and preventing serious injuries if you have a crash. I’d also like to note the changes in the local police this month. On Monday, Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Worner stepped in to temporarily head the Ashburton Police Station after Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield moved to a role in Christchurch. We are also lucky to have Sergeant Dan Harker start this month. Sergeant Harker has more than 30 years of experience in the police force. He was involved in developing a solar-powered warning sign, which was trialled in Selwyn. The sign is designed to reduce the number of fatalities on the road by sensing if oncoming vehicles are speeding and flashing warning lights at them. We are delighted to have his experience and knowledge in our district. Donna Favel is the Mayor of Ashburton

Gun laws under spotlight The deadly shooting at a Florida high school has put pressure on the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature to consider a sweeping package of gun-control laws in a state that has resisted restrictions on firearms for decades, lawmakers said. The legislative effort coalesced as 100 students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School prepared to ride buses more to the state capital to urge lawmakers to act to prevent a repeat of the massacre that killed 17 students and faculty last week. The suspect, 19-year-old former student Nikolas Cruz, made his first appearance in court yesterday. Wearing a prison jumpsuit, he kept his head down and didn’t appear to make eye contact with the judge or others in the courtroom, though he responded briefly to someone on the defence team. A previous appearance was by a video connection from jail. His lawyers have said he will plead guilty if prosecutors agree not to pursue the death penalty. No decision has been made on that. Soon after the shooting, several legislative leaders were

The attack seemed to overcome the resistance of some in the state’s leadership, which has rebuffed gun restrictions since Republicans took control of both the governor’s
office and the Legislature in 1999. However, there is still strong resistance by many in the party to any gun-control measures, leaving the fate of new restrictions unclear. Senator Bill Galvano, the incoming state Senate president, said the Senate was preparing

Rescuers find wreckage from plane crash Iranian search and rescue teams reached the site of a plane crash that authorities say killed all 65 people on board, Iran’s Press TV reported. The Aseman Airlines ATR72, a twin-engine turboprop used for short-distance regional flying, went down in foggy weather, crashing into Mount Dena in a remote area of southern Iran. The airline said all on board Flight EP3704 were killed, including six crew members.
The crash of the aircraft, brought back into service only months ago after being grounded for seven years, was yet another fatal aviation disaster for Iran, which for years was barred from buying necessary airplane parts due to Western sanctions over its contested nuclear programme. Press TV said search teams reached the crash site before dawn yesterday. The station said the weather had improved, though it was still
windy. The semi-official Tasnim news agency cited the military as saying Russia had helped locate the crash site. Russia and Iran are close military allies. The TV broadcast footage of a helicopter joining the search and showed ambulances and rescue vehicles preparing to reach the site on Mount Dena, which is about 4400 metres tall. The site is reportedly at a height of 3500 metres. Transport Minister Abbas

Manson melts down It wasn’t Marilyn Manson’s finest moment. Fans who attended the 49-year-old performer’s concert at the The Paramount in Huntington, New York, were displeased after he showed up 90 minutes late before a pitifullyabbreviated show. According to Newsday, Manson emerged in a wheelchair, integrating his injury into the act, and rattled off three songs – The Reflecting God, Deep Six and This is the New S*** – at which point he began demanding the audience show him affection if they wanted him to continue performing. His accompanying band was confused, leading to a number of songs starting and stopping, prior to leaving the stage.

KiwiRail improves earnings
KiwiRail posted half-year revenue of $292.7m. As always, the national rail carrier did not report a statutory profit on its activities, reporting a $193m loss for the half-year. That reflects the fact that revenue earned “above rail” is always far lower than would be required to fully maintain the capital-
intensive network. However, the importance of maintaining a rail network for wider economic and national interest reasons means both the previous and present government accept KiwiRail will always make accounting losses. The result for the half-year was
Former Prime Minister Bill English will address high net worth investors and family business owners from Australia and New Zealand in Auckland on Friday at an invite-only lunch focused on the America’s Cup. English and Rene de Monchy, director of trade, PR and major events at Tourism New Zealand, will address the event organised by the Table Club and hosted on Rakino Island in the Hauraki Golf. achieved on revenue of $292.7m, 1.9 per cent down from the $298.3m recorded in the last six months of 2016, and reflecting the fact that the Kaikoura link was only restored in September 2017. Operating expenses, at $277.4m, were 3.5 per cent lower than in the previous period. Ports revenue from KiwiRail’s trucking and rail services was up 16 per cent on the half-year, which chairman Trevor Janes said was a strong result when placed against overall container volume growth of 7 per cent nationally in the same period. Forestry revenues rose 8 per cent as the so-called ‘wall of wood’ from maturing plantation forests starts to come on-stream. Dairy industry and coal volumes rose, contributing to a 6 per cent increase in bulk freight revenue. Poor weather and “significant and unexpected” repair costs on the company’s ageing South Island locomotive fleet contributed to a “messy” six months, Janes said. - NZME
Auckland-Bali flights Just when Air New Zealand was about to wave goodbye to the Emirates juggernaut flying from Auckland across the Tasman, the Dubai-based airline is back in direct competition on another developing route. From midJune Emirates will fly daily from Auckland to Bali year-round, a route that was coming along nicely for Air New Zealand. This year it was stepping up from three times a week to five times a week during the winter peak using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Emirates’ 777300ER aircraft will add close to 130,000 seats a year on the route.

Tradies jailed for tax evasion Two tradesmen have been sentenced to prison for each evading nearly $1 million in tax. Hamilton plasterer Paul Andrew Mills was sentenced on February 9 to two years and one month, while Auckland builder Hamish Paul Aegerter received a sentence of two years and seven months last Friday. Mills was sentenced on 11 tax evasion charges for offences committed between the 2009 and 2017 tax years. Aegerter was prosecuted for three representative charges of filing false GST and income tax returns, and failing to file returns. According to Inland Revenue Legal Services Leader Karen Whitiskie, Mills hadn’t filed any income tax or GST returns during the nine-year period and also failed to pass on his employees’ PAYE when he became an employer. In total, he was liable for $996,107 in GST, income tax and PAYE on undeclared earnings of nearly $3 million. “Mr Mills charged his clients GST but never passed that on to Inland Revenue. “He deducted PAYE from his employees but never passed that on either. And he didn’t file an income tax return for nearly a decade,” Whitiskie said. The IRD said Aegerter had existed largely outside the tax system for 17 years. When he filed some income tax returns, he grossly under-reported his income. For one six-year period he re-

Disruption to South Island rail services caused by the November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake masked a continuation in improved operating earnings from state-owned railway operator KiwiRail in the six months to December 31. The company reported an operating surplus of $15 million for the period, which would have come in at $40m once the one-off costs associated with the closure of the main trunk line between Picton and Christchurch were stripped out. While quake impacts would still be felt in the second half of the current financial year, KiwiRail was still on track to deliver operating earnings of between $30m and $50m, said chief executive Peter Reidy. In the previous comparable period, which included the first few weeks of the outage caused by the massive Kaikoura quake, KiwiRail reported operating earnings of $11m, or $23m underlying once quake impacts were backed out.

Oodles of noodles W
hen you want a quick and easy meal it takes a lot to beat a bowl of noodles. They’re the ultimate one-pan short-order meal. There’s a huge range of noodles on the
market – both soft and dried – so it’s really just a matter of keeping a few of your favourites in the pantry and you already have half a meal. As long as your pantry has the Asian spice
basics, your fridge has a few vegetables and your freezer has a packet of prawns, stir-fry beef, or pork or beef mince, you have the rest of the ingredients you need to whip up a meal in well under 30 minutes.
Chilli pork noodles 200g pkt egg noodles 1T peanut oil 500g pork mince 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2t finely-grated ginger 2 long red chillies, thinly sliced 227g can water chestnut slices, rinsed, drained 400g pkt frozen stir-fry vegetable mix 1/3 C (95g) oyster sauce 1/4 C (35g) roasted peanuts, chopped Thinly sliced long red chilli, extra, to serve Coriander leaves, to serve Lime wedges, to serve ■ Cook the noodles following packet directions. Drain. ■ Heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan over high heat. ■ Add the mince and cook, ■ Stir with wooden spoon to break up any lumps, for five minutes or until cooked through. ■ Add the garlic, ginger, chilli, water chestnut and vegetable mix. ■ Cook, stirring, for two minutes or until vegetables are wilted. ■ Add the oyster sauce and noodles and cook, stirring, until well combined and heated through. ■ Sprinkle the stir-fry with peanuts, extra chilli and coriander. ■ Serve with the lime wedges.
Beef noodle stir-fry 2 pkts udon noodles 1T olive oil 600g beef top sirloin filet, thinly sliced across the grain 500g mushrooms, sliced Small head broccoli, chopped into florets 2 carrots, diced Sauce: 1/3 C soy sauce 3T oyster sauce 1T brown sugar, packed 1T freshly-grated ginger 2 cloves garlic, pressed 1t sesame oil 1/4 t crushed red pepper flakes 1/4 t ground black pepper ■ In a small bowl, whisk together sauce ingredients. ■ In a large pot of boiling water, cook udon noodles according to package instructions, drain well. ■ Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. ■ Add beef and cook, flipping once, until browned, about 3-4 minutes; set aside. ■ Stir in mushrooms, broccoli and carrots to the skillet. ■ Cook, stirring frequently, until tender, about 3-4 minutes. ■ Stir in udon noodles, beef and soy sauce mixture until well combined, about 2-3 minutes. ■ Serve immediately.

In brief Wigan stuns Man City Sergio Aguero was involved in a confrontation with a Wigan fan as ugly scenes marred the end of the thirddivision side’s shock FA Cup win over Manchester City yesterday. Fans spilled onto the pitch as the hosts celebrated their 1-0 win against the runaway Premier League leaders. Supporters from both clubs were involved in disturbances, while television appeared to show a home supporter and striker Aguero involved in a physical exchange. Pep Guardiola and Wigan counterpart Paul Cook were involved in a heated dispute. - PA
Young confident of glory
Annabel Spicer is all concentration for Mid Canterbury in their junior rep fixture with Ellesmere.
Manchester United’s solid defence and attacking options make Ashley Young believe Champions League glory is realistic this season. For the first time since 2013-14, the three-time European champions are back in the knockout phase of the continent’s top competition. Tonight sees Jose Mourinho’s side take on Sevilla in the first leg of the last-16 clash, yet there is already half an eye on the Kiev finale this May. Saturday’s 2-0 fifth round FA Cup win at Huddersfield was a welcome boost at the start of a massive week that sees Mourinho’s former side Chelsea arrive at Old Trafford after the trip to Spain. - PA PHOTO ROBYN HOOD 180218-RH-526
■ TENNIS
Future bright on court By Matt MarkhaM
Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz
They may have lost the overall battle, but Mid Canterbury’s young tennis stars did win some of the wars in their annual rep fixture with Ellesmere on Sunday at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre – continuing a strong rep season in the process. Ellesmere took overall honours across the four age groups, winning 35 matches to Mid Canterbury’s 29, but the hosts did claim success in the 10-year-old and 16-year-old fixtures. Mid Canterbury Tennis coach,
Andre van Rooyen said the performances of the 10-year-old group was particularly satisfying. “They are unbeaten in the last two seasons of this Canterbury Country Districts Rep League,” he said. “There was a significant improvement year on year in the performances of the 12s, which shows our development pathway plan is working, I believe.” The loss on the weekend took the junior rep side to a 1-2 score for the rep season after a win against Malvern late last year but defeat at the hands of North Can-
terbury. The final fixture for the group comes in a month when they host South Canterbury. The hard work will continue after that with winter training set to take place. “We will be doing strength and conditioning work and focusing on everything so that we can hit the competition courts hard next spring and summer.” On Sunday, the performance of the 16s was spear-headed by a dominant effort from the boys, who won both doubles matches and their four singles ties before combining with the girls to win
three mixed doubles matches. Sam Bubb, Edwin Dargue, Jarrad Hill and Erin Connelly-White enjoyed unbeaten days on the courts. In the 10s the boys again did the damage with Jake Parsons, Jacob Adam, Sebastien van Rooyen and Drew Gilbert all undefeated for the day. The 12s side had Ollie Bubb and Holly Jayne Feutz recording three wins from three matches while the 14s side were unable to pick up a win during their 16 matches against a strong Ellesmere outfit.
Getafe rock Celta Viga Getafe followed their surprise draw against Barcelona at Camp Nou Stadium with a comfortable 3-0 win against Celta Vigo yesterday, ending a four-game winless streak in the Spanish league. After holding off the league leaders in the previous round, Getafe took care of mid-table Celta with goals by Angel Rodriguez and another by Jorge Molina. - PA
Protest mars victory Frankfurt came from behind to beat RB Leipzig 2-1 as their fans vented their fury in the first of five contentious games in the German Bundesliga. Timothy Chandler and Kevin-Prince Boateng cancelled out Jean-Kevin Augustin’s early strike as Frankfurt overtook Leipzig to go third. But the game will be remembered for the charged atmosphere as the home supporters protested against staging games on a Monday night.

■ RUGBY
Crackdown on scrums By Liam Napier Rugby has moved to punish manipulation of uncontested scrums by stripping teams of a player. Uncontested scrums are a rare sight but if teams involved in this year’s Super Rugby lose four of their six front-rowers to injury, or three of their four props, they will have to play the remainder of the match with 14 men. The only exception will be if front-rowers leave the field due to a head injury assessment or blood related knock. Should a team lose two props to injury and one more to a yellow or red card, they will then be forced to play with 13 players. In the case of a yellow card, the team will be restored to 15 players after the 10 minute period in the bin. The purpose of the rule crackdown is to avoid situations such as the controversy surrounding Chiefs prop Siate Tokolahi and the uncontested scrums in a match against the Hurricanes last year. With the Chiefs struggling
Ashburton Guardian 15
Siate Tokolahi to win their ball from scrums, Tokolahi left the field late. The Chiefs then claimed replacement prop Siegfried Fisi’ihoi could not play tighthead which forced uncontested scrums. This played a hand in the Chiefs clinging on for a 28-27 victory.
In this situation, by forcing uncontested scrums, they would now lose a player of their choice. The Chiefs are not alone. In the week before facing the All Blacks, Wales were accused of bringing the game into disrepute after Warren Gatland appeared to manipulate his front-row substitutes to force uncontested scrums and scrape out a 13-6 win over Georgia. In both cases, the dominant scrum had its dominance unfairly taken away. This rule change is designed to counter that negative tactic. Another adjustment to the scrums means there will now be no pre-engage, with front-rows mandated to keep the gap. Initially at least this could lead to more re-sets. Other rule tweaks adopted by the All Blacks in their November internationals – those around the scrum and tackle arena – will also be adopted by Super Rugby this season. Teams have spent up to one week with referees in camp getting up to speed. - NZME
RULE TWEAKS Scrum: No signal from referee. Halfback to decide when to put ball in. Halfback must put ball in straight but can align his shoulder on the middle line of the scrum, allowing him to stand a shoulder width towards his side of the middle line. Scrum hook - One player from the team who put the ball in must strike for the ball. No 8 may pick the ball up from the feet of the locks. Tackler - Must get up before playing the ball and then can only play from his side of the tackle gate. Ruck (formation) - A ruck commences when at least one player is on their feet and over the ball which is on the ground (tackled player, tackler). At this point the offside line is created. A player on his feet may use his hands to pick up the ball as long as this is immediate. As soon as an opposition player arrives no hands can be used. (Made to avoid repeat of Italy’s tactics against England last year) Ruck (kicking) - A player must not kick the ball out of a ruck. The player can only hook it in a backwards motion.
McKenzie up for it Damien McKenzie is embracing the challenge of his switch from fullback to first five-eighth for the Chiefs. McKenzie has played the bulk of his 51 Super matches at fullback, starring with an electric running game which has eaten up metres and left defenders in his wake. “For myself it’s taking more of a leadership role and leading the team around the park, not changing too much but playing my own game and being smart about how I play it,” he said. He is happy to have brother Marty back after a season with the Crusaders. - NZME
Ireland calls on Ringrose Centre Garry Ringrose could be in contention to face Wales in the Six Nations after replacing the injured Robbie Henshaw in Ireland’s squad. Ringrose has been battling ankle trouble since January but was drafted into Ireland’s ranks with Henshaw sidelined for four months with shoulder trouble. Ireland will be forced to rearrange their midfield in the absence of British and Irish Lion Henshaw, with Chris Farrell and now Ringrose among those in the frame to wear the No.13 shirt. Henshaw suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder in Ireland’s 56-19 win over Italy on February 10. Ireland bid to extend their 100 per cent record in this year’s Six Nations. - PA

Canterbury are the defending Ford Trophy champions.

■ CRICKET
AshColl facing huge task Ashburton College’s 1st XI cricket side have a herculean task ahead of them this weekend in day two of their match against Shirley Boys’ High School in the Christchurch secondary schools’ two-day competition. Playing on the Ashburton Domain on Saturday, Shirley Boys took the bat to open the match and bashed and crashed their way through to 309/7 declared,
including a remarkable innings of 173 from Mitchell Barry who hit 21 fours and three sixes before he was caught by Tom Middleton off the bowling of Angus Jemmett. Barry’s effort was the highest individual score by a batsman from the cricketing-proud Shirley Boys’ High School. Harry McMillan and James Forbes were the pick of the Ash-
Coll bowlers with two wickets each. In reply, the local side’s run chase didn’t start too well, with four members of the top order back in the dugout for just eight combined runs. A tidy 54 from the bat of Jayden Fuller was the bright spot on the batting scoresheet which ended at 118 all out on the close of the day’s play.
After his heroics with the bat, Barry was on fire for Shirley Boys with the ball as well, taking four wickets for just 23 runs, although he was outshone by team-mate Brad Entwhistle who claimed 5/14. Play will resume this weekend with plenty to be done by the Ashburton batsmen if they are to salvage anything out of the match.
Skippers contemplate coping with Eden Park By Andrew Alderson Australia’s world record Twenty20 chase against New Zealand on Friday night has left both captains mulling over how they defend against Eden Park’s backyard dimensions ahead of tonight’s tri-series final. The visitors chased down the hosts’ 243 for six with five wickets and seven balls to spare. The ball appeared to spend more time in the stands than on the field as both bowling attacks were dismantled on one of cricket’s most unforgiving arenas. The 32 sixes equalled the world record in the format. With the electronic signage the boundaries are 56m from the middle of the pitch straight, and 64m square. With no scope to place fielders
in the bleachers, David Warner and Kane Williamson have been calculating how to best restrict runs and protect their bowlers’ confidence after such a mismatch between bat and ball. “It’s probably one of those grounds where you should have five [fielders] in the outfield straight away because it doesn’t matter,” Warner quipped. “It’s a challenge as a captain and as a bowler; you probably need a deep fly slip instead of a third man which makes for some bizarre catching spots. “We’ve just got to find a way to get wickets in the first six overs, it’s as simple as that.” Williamson placed his hope in a deteriorating drop-in pitch. “The surface is the same as the previous game and the one before that.
Kane Williamson “Hopefully it takes more turn and assistance to offer balance between bat and ball. That way we might be able to use spin more as an attacking option. “It’s important not to go in with too many pre-emptive ideas, however the last one [at Eden Park] was a slightly different experience because a lot of games
there have been relatively low scoring.” Williamson agreed some fielding positions become less relevant on the ring or the boundary. “Like third man. At times it went down there and you have to suck it up, knowing a top edge would’ve gone for six or beaten a fieldsman along the ground. “You can’t get caught up in any mentality of what we think is good, like 180 often being a fantastic score.” Williamson said it was no time to remove Eden Park as a venue. “We’ve had some of the most fantastic games of cricket here. The last game was the first time we’ve seen it fully exposed as a small ground. The World Cup produced some of the best atmospheres I’ve been involved in anywhere in the world.” - NZME
Andrew Johns urged Roosters fans to be patient for Cooper Cronk to gel with his team-mates this NRL season. Johns is working closely with Cronk and halves partner Luke Keary in his role as a coaching consultant at the club, and is predicting big things for the Roosters after the teething period. “Be patient, Roosters fans. It may take a while for them to gel but when they do it’s going to be a dangerous team,” Johns said. - NZME

■ AVONDALE
In brief
Filly chasing Oaks berth Promising filly Excelsior Island has two chances to earn her place in next month’s Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m). A start in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai-sponsored feature rests on her performance at Avondale today in the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Pearl Series Race (1600m) with a sterner test to follow. “We then want to run her in the Sunline Vase a week and a-half later and decide on the Oaks from there,” trainer Mark Forbes said. “The Oaks wasn’t originally on her programme, but it could be a possibility now.
M2
“She’s a filly with a good pedigree so a bit of black type is the main goal.” The daughter of Exceed And Excel is a half-sister to the former champion two-year-old Warhorse, winner of the Gr.1 Diamond Stakes (1200m) and a subsequent Group performer in Australia. Bred and part-owned by retired Cambridge vet Jonathan Hope, Excelsior Island broke her maiden at her third appearance over 1400m at Te Rapa last time out. “She’s trained on well since and we’ll probably ride her a bit colder tomorrow,” Forbes said.
Excelsior Island will be partnered by the in-form Jake Bayliss, who guided her to her maiden victory. “She settles well in her races, she’s a good-natured filly and we definitely think she can get over a trip,” Forbes said. The Cambridge horseman knows Excelsior Island well, having originally broken her in. “She went to Australia to Mick Price, but she didn’t settle over there so she came back to Trelawney Stud, where she was born and raised, and then came into work with us,” Forbes said. - NZME
Jack’s Legend fit New Zealand Cup runner-up Jack’s Legend is nearing a resumption as the second half of his racing season approaches. It has been six weeks since he raced in the Waikato Flying Mile, where he finished a disappointing fourth. He was sixth in the Auckland Cup and fifth in the Franklin Cup, both efforts down on his brilliant Cup week. “For whatever reason he just wasn’t quite himself after Cup Week,” said Barry Purdon, New Zealand’s all time winningest trainer. - HRNZ

Trainer Mark Forbes
Magic Chai will be required to trial to the satisfaction of stipendiary stewards before he races again. The order was made after the Tony Pike-trained stayer beat one home in Saturday’s Nathan’s Memorial where he lost considerable ground with a slow start. - NZME

In brief
■ HEAVEN ROCKS
Stateside sale likely Outstanding but erratic pacer Heaven Rocks is under offer to American interests and could be stateside by the end of the month. Co-owner Phil Kennard has confirmed that the owners of the big gelding had accepted an offer and now it was a case of waiting for the buyers to complete their due diligence before he departed Australasian shores. The decision came with mixed emotions for the group according to Kennard who said although he’s tested their patience on numerous occasions during his career, he’s also given them some incredible thrills. “It’s been an interesting ride, that’s for sure,” Kennard said. “He’s given us all some wonderful thrills, but going to watch him is a bit like going to a rodeo, you just don’t quite know what’s going to happen.” Kennard said the horse was still in good health and capable of racing competitively in the high grades, but his manners have unfortunately meant he has always been chasing the good ones. “If you go back through most of his runs, he’s had to chase because he’s come off the unruly or been slow away or done things wrong. “He’s put up some phenomenal performances at times, to run a length and a half behind Vincent, who Mark thinks is the next big thing, in the Auckland Cup was huge. “But eventually, that could break his heart and none of us want that to happen.” Heaven Rocks is a multiple Group One winner, including last season’s Easter Cup and 4YO Emerald at the Harness Jewels. He raced for Kennard, his wife Glenys, Phil and Margaret
Brisbane on priority list The Queensland winter carnival remains firmly on the radar of the multiple stakes winner Prom Queen. “She’s fine and she’ll likely kick off in mid-April, there’s a race at Te Rapa for her and a week later one at Doomben, but we’ll give her a trial first and take it from there,” co-trainer Kenny Rae said. Prom Queen has won eight of her 11 starts, four of them at black type level, and was fourth last time out in the Bonecrusher Stakes. - NZME
High Spirits earns break Promising staying mare High Spirits has been turned out following her unplaced run at Ellerslie in the Nathan’s Memorial. “She’s gone to the spelling paddock, it was perhaps one run too many but she pulled up fine,” trainer John Bary said. “Maybe the Wellington Cup flattened her.” High Spirits finished fifth in the Group Three feature off the back of a similar placing in the Gr.3 Trentham Stakes (2100m) and a clear-cut win in the Chalmers Premier (3200m). - NZME
Northern targets
Multiple Group One winner Heaven Rocks, part-owned by Ashburton’s Gavin Douglas, may have run his last race in New Zealand as a sale to American interests looms. Creighton, Ashburton’s Gavin Douglas and Kevin Riseley on 27 occasions, winning 12 and placings a further six times for close to $500,000 in earnings. It’s never nice selling a horse who has given you such a great ride Kennard said, but at the end of the day the owners had made the decision based on what was best for the horse, Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen and for them in the long run. “It would have been hard for
him next season, off the unruly and chasing not only Lazarus, but probably Vincent too. “The treatments he can get over in America will help him greatly and it will free up a lot of time around the stable because he requires attention above and beyond most other horses.” It is likely, unfortunately, that Heaven Rocks’ last run as a Kiwi will go down as one of his worst, with his effort to finish last in the Allied Express Sprint on Satur-
day night at Menangle. “With the virus that had been going through the barn we weren’t that confident, he hadn’t really handled the retention barn too well, either. “But he was pretty ordinary by his standards.” With just the minor details to be worked out by the interested party, Kennard expected that Heaven Rocks could be on his way to America within a fortnight. - NZHN
■ FLYING FEET
Injury knocks star out of Ellerslie feature
Flying Feet with Opie Bosson aboard have been in winning form.
There is a tinge of disappointment in Joseph Waldron’s Te Awamutu stable after his Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) hope Flying Feet has been forced to withdraw from the Ellerslie feature. The promising Ocean Park three-year-old is now in the spelling paddock after he was found slightly lame on Saturday morning, just before his tilt at the Gr.2 Avondale Guineas (2100m). “In a routine trot-up on race morning he wasn’t quite right,” Waldron said. “We got him checked out and the vet said he needs a few months in the paddock to get over things. “It was a big shame. “I think he would have been competitive in the Guineas then
onwards into the Derby as well, but that’s just how things go in this game sometimes. “The horse always comes first and it will be good for him to have a break now.” The gelding has been extremely impressive in his first three starts for Waldron, winning one and runner-up in his two other starts for the young trainer who is looking forward to Flying Feet’s four-year-old season. “He came a long way in one preparation, and the wear and tear got to him a bit,” Waldron said. “He’ll have a good spell now and allow for him to get over things naturally, time’s a good healer of most things and we look forward to getting him back as a four-year-old.” - NZME
Riccarton trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman are readying the troops for North Island raids. “For the Otaki meeting that’s been transferred to Hastings we’re bringing up Sensei for the three-year-old race and Son Of Maher for the Group One,” Michael Pitman said. The latter will contest the Haunui Farm Classic. “Then we’ll have Pinup Coup and Savvy Coup running in the Lowland Stakes and then we expect to have a solid team at Wellington on March 17.” - NZME
Diamond plans upset A series of misfortune has put a spanner in the works in the race plans for quality stakes-winning mare Untamed Diamond. Trained by Richard Collett, she had been earmarked to start in the Darley Plate at Ellerslie before those plans were thwarted by injury. “She had a throat infection and then we had her up and going with intentions of racing her over the Auckland Carnival for the Darley but she’s just pulled a hamstring muscle in behind, so she is back on the easy list,” Collett said. - NZME
Kiwi-bred on target New Zealand-bred sprinter Music Magnate is thriving ahead of an international campaign. The Bjorn Baker-trained six-year-old, who won a 900m trial at Rosehill on Monday, has been set for the $1 million Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan in Dubai on March 31. “He’s going really, really well. He’s definitely on target,” Baker said. “We are probably going to give him another trial at Randwick in a couple of weeks as we try to get him on the plane in the best possible order for what’s in front of him.” - NZME
Mare ready to resume Multiple stakes winner Miss Wilson will be back in action on her home course next month. The Hastings mare has been freshened since she finished a luckless eighth in the Telegraph at Trentham last month. “She copped a couple of checks and was last at the crossing before she got put off balance again, but that’s Group One racing,” trainer John Bary said. - NZME

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You tend to put pressure on yourself. Some of it is appropriate and is absolutely what you need to succeed; some of it is totally unnecessary. Today you’ll figure out the difference. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): There are three kinds of luck: the kind you are born into, the kind you stumble into and the kind you make in situations with great potential. You can only really control the last kind. And you will today! GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Happiness doesn’t always make you smile. Sometimes it makes you holler, sometimes it makes you cry and sometimes it dumbfounds you into a state of perfect, blissful neutrality. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You figure out you don’t need as much as you thought you would, so you can let go and watch your energy level rise. Also, your connection with a fire sign (Aries, Leo or Sagittarius) will raise your energy. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Thinking back to your behaviour in younger days will make you cringe. Years from now, you’ll cringe about something you did yesterday. But it’s all growth and learning. Stay light, laugh, forgive and keep going. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Friends and stories will be the great treasure of your day. You’ll be surprised by what some people remember about your times together and this will add to your own recollections. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Time can seem like a bully. But bullies can be stopped. Stand up to time! Take control of your schedule by filling it with what you want to do instead of reacting to every petty demand that’s made of you. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You know when people say they’re ready, but then it turns out that they are not ready at all? It irritates you so much that you’ll take extra measures today just to make sure you’re not “that person.” SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Sometimes conditions are perfect for slipping into a sweet spot of productivity. Then there are days like today, when you have to practically bribe yourself to get your head in the game. That’s no bad idea! CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ve seen how small and trivial events can have disproportionately influential consequences. Today will present another instance of this, though it will take you months to detect the moment. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’re not sure where the next lucky break is coming from – the last one was so long ago you’re forgetting it. This is a fine time to arrange to be in as many potential hot spots as you can foresee. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There’s a point where trying too hard to change a negative behaviour becomes even more negative. Obsessing over improvement is not improvement. Try self-compassion and acceptance.

Mouthguard rule enforced BY LINDA CLARKE
LINDA.C@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Rugby referees around the country are under orders from New Zealand Rugby to enforce a 20-year-old rule requiring players to wear mouthguards. Mid Canterbury referees manager Graham Shaw said the onus was on coaches and managers to make sure all players were wearing mouthguards when they took the field. If a player was caught without one, they would be sinbinned for 10 minutes and the team captain warned that any further mouthguard offences would result in
players being red carded, or sent off for the game. The first player caught would only be able to return to the game if they had a mouthguard. The red card for subsequent offenders will also accompanied by a one-week standdown following the game. Shaw said Mid Canterbury players were generally compliant, but referees would now have no discretion in policing the rule, which has been in force since 1998. Referees will begin enforcing the rule from March 3, when preseason games begin. It was important players, coach-

es, managers, spectators and parents, got the message, he said. The referees group has also written to all rugby clubs in the district to outline what would happen if players did not wear mouthguards. Shaw said New Zealand Rugby did not want mouthguards to become a referee issue and teams needed to take responsibility themselves. “There is enough information out there now on the benefits of wearing them, for safety and concussion. “We should not have to be policing it.”
The mouthguard rule does not apply to Super Rugby players, but they are required by their national players’ union to wear one. Shaw said referees would also be able to issue blue cards for suspected concussion from senior through to under 16 grades. Last year five blue cards were handed out. Players must sit out for three weeks and have a doctor’s clearance before returning. Shaw said the mouthguard rule and interpretations on rules would be canvassed at a series of Rugby Smart meetings to be held before the season started.
The referees themselves would also begin training on February 27 and will have the opportunity to take part in a training day with Super Rugby referees after the Crusaders game in Christchurch in March. Shaw said he had about 25 referees available to call on, but some were nearing the end of their careers and young blood was needed. People need not necessarily have played the game, but should have a keen interest in it. People can contact him on referees@midcanterburyrugby. co.nz
