Kiwis love their meat pies, especially in a crisis.

Bread at Ashburton New World is in high demand.

Rice was also in short supply.

How tricky is a trip to the supermarket? By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Keep calm and do not stockpile! That’s the message from supermarket chains, but it does not seem to be working. A trip to Ashburton New World on Thursday afternoon to get groceries by this reporter was interesting to say the least. First of all, walking in about 2pm, well before the usual postschool rush, the supermarket was positively bustling and there were none of the smaller trolleys available. Taking one of the larger trolleys instead, I found the fruit and vege section fully laden. It was great to see – plenty of fresh produce to boost our immune systems and keep us healthy in the face of Covid-19. But then swinging around to the rest of the supermarket, one is confronted with Mid Canterbury’s own version of pandemic pandemonium. We do not have queues out the door, as witnessed in some supermarkets around the country, but throughout are signs limiting shoppers on various items. Most of these are A4 pages stuck to the shelves, looking quite forlorn with rows of empty shelves behind them. “Dear valued customer, we are currently experiencing increased demand for all bread. To make sure we have enough to go around, we have a limit of four loaves per customer.” The yawning gaps in the bread

The shelves were bare in the UHT cows’ milk department. aisle are reflective of what is happening around the district and the rest of the country. It was the same in the rice section, with a limit of two bags, flour, with a limit of two, UHT milk, with a limit of three, and disinfectant wipes, with a limit of two. The supermarket was overall well stocked and appears to be keeping up with demand. But the staff are just very busy, bringing out loads upon loads of items to restock shelves. In the flour section as an as-

sistant placed bags onto empty shelves, she answered in the affirmative to a female shopper saying “Can I take two?”. The shopper added “I’m not panicking. Just in case, just in case!” as she put them into her trolley. Other items in short supply were meat pies in the chiller section. The peculiars that people all of a sudden seem to buy defy reason, although one would have to say meat pies make more sense than toilet paper. Another gap opening up was

in the section for cat biscuits. I guess as we shoppers get told off for being greedy and stockpiling, we can at least can take comfort in the fact we care about our cats. Managers at Foodstuffs, which owns New World and Pak’n Save, told the Guardian despite the increased pressure the supply chain was robust and appealed to people to shop normally. Countdown managers, in a media release, have also appealed to people’s common sense.

“Kiwis are all about fairness,” they said. “We’re big believers that a little kindness goes a long way, and we want to make sure that there are food and groceries available for everyone, and especially those who might be unable, or find it hard to go into a store.” Their words draw up the heart-breaking image from England which went viral this week, of an elderly man staring down at his shopping list in Surrey, surrounded by empty supermarket shelves. The Countdown managers said demand was unprecedented and for some products they were selling triple the amount they would normally sell. “And while we make things like toilet paper right here in New Zealand, we simply can’t get it on our shelves quick enough if everyone is going to continue to buy like they are currently.” The store was asking customers to think about how much food and other essentials they really needed. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has also told people not to panic buy, while across the Tasman her compatriot Scott Morrison has been even sterner, telling Australians it has been one of the most disappointing responses to the pandemic. It seems times of crisis bring out the best and the worst in people. We all need to try and not be part of the problem, and stop stockpiling.

Formula overbuying creates anxiety for mums By Susan Sandys

Some lines of baby formula have been snapped up from supermarket shelves, creating uncertainty for families with infants and toddlers. Ashburton mum Jess Crotty said she and her husband had scouted Ashburton’s three main supermarkets last week and found there was none of the Karicare 6 to 12 months they needed for their nine-monthold son Leo. They then went to The Warehouse and got the last tin. “We have been keeping an eye out on the shelves, there’s just been nothing,” Crotty said. She and her family lived from one weekly pay packet to the next, and could not afford to buy in bulk. She put a post on an Ashburton community Facebook page this week to report the apparent shortage, and an Ashburton woman who was in Christchurch got a tin for her from a Christchurch supermarket. When she popped into Ashburton New World yesterday she was pleased to see it back on shelves, with a two-per-person limit. Nevertheless, the situation had been unsettling for her and her

She worked in retail with members of the public and was worried her son was vulnerable, just like all babies would be as their immune systems were still developing. “A little frightened,” was how she

described she felt. Ashburton’s The Stork Network has appealed to families to be wise and thoughtful in their purchase of formula. In the case of under six-month-olds who could not be breastfed, it was their only source of nutrition.

“If anyone has excess formula that they don’t need and would be willing to pass on, please make it known as I’m sure there will be a mother close by who’s struggling to find even one tin when her baby’s life depends on it,” the network said on Facebook.

More than tourism will be hurt by Covid-19 By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

The impact of Covid-19 will be felt long after the crisis is over, says Experience Mid Canterbury chairman James Urquhart. While the frontline impact of the virtual closure of New Zealand’s borders was felt across tourist operators and the hospitality sector, there would be ongoing effects that would be felt across the Ashburton District’s economy, he said. “Sixty per cent of business on the main street could be gone in six months. We’re in an incredibly challenging situation.”

While Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC) was making sure it was in a position to kickstart the promotion of the district as soon as the borders opened again, Urqhuart said the organisation might have to look at how it shaped itself and who its partners might be in the future. “If we’re still around, like a lot of businesses in six months’ time, these are the discussions we’ll be having.” Because there were directives from government to cease tourism promotion, EMC manager Bruce Moffat said his team had been spending time with opera-

tors and what he was seeing was that life was far from shiny and glossy. “Approximately $500,000 in forward bookings have been cancelled in the last couple of weeks, it’s an incredibly scary time for those businesses in the tourism industry,” he said. They also painted a grim picture of business at the Methven i-SITE, which had its worst summer on record. Councillor John Falloon took exception to Urquhart’s statement that businesses in town would close because of Covid-19. “I don’t agree this district will

suffer. The rural sector and manufacturing are very strong and we may well come out of this stronger,” he said. Yes, tourism was taking a hiding, mayor Neil Brown said, but the rural sector was in a positive position. “We are positioned to get through this pandemic and come out the other side one of the better districts in this country. We need to shop locally, use our cafes and bars as the tourists would use them. We need to support our local people at this time and we’ll come out of this together,” he said.

As part of its preparedness for continuing the business of the Ashburton District during the Covid-19 pandemic, district councillors yesterday cleared the way for council meetings to be held by audio visual links. Under its standing orders all councillors must attend meetings, but concerns that some may either be unwell or unwilling to attend meetings over the coming weeks, they decided to change their standing orders to allow audio visual attendance. While all councillors were happy to have the option of remote meeting attendance, Stuart Wilson did not want it to remain a long term option. “Further down the track I don’t want to think that a councillor might say they won’t come to meetings, by choice. “I think we should still have to attend meeting unless it’s imperative we do not,” he said. Obtaining a quorum for a meeting might also be difficult if councillors could opt to attend remotely and a quorum required physical attendance, Wilson said. Standing orders aside, chief executive Hamish Riach said the practice of remote attendance at meetings was now common, but + if councillors wanted a safeguard built in this could be + done by putting a time limit on the remote attendance option, he said. Councillors voted to allow remote meeting attendance until October 1 and for the same period they voted to reduce the quorum for both standing and sub-committees by one.

The battle of the quinces By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

There’s an elderly quince tree growing on Hanrahan Street that has become a victim in a tug of ownership war. The tree is growing on Ashburton District Council land and for many years has been cared for by its neighbours, firstly Jack Ross, who lived across Mill Creek and for the past four years by Russell Anstiss. In return its caretakers have enjoyed bags full of ripe fruit, with plenty left over for others to gather and enjoy. Each year close to harvest time, Anstiss places a note on the tree asking that in return for his caretaking efforts he has the first shot at collecting ripe fruit. Not too much to ask for a tree that no one else seems to value, he thought. But it seems someone is not happy with that arrangement. A letter was dropped in Anstiss’ mailbox making it clear the tree belonged to the council and that meant the fruit also belonged to the council. He was incensed, but he was also puzzled. While the letter was written on

Russell Anstiss, collecting ripe quince from a tree growing on Ashburton District Council land. PHOTO SUE NEWMAN 180320-SN-0016 council letterhead paper, it was unsigned. And that started alarm bells ringing. Had the council started a new practice, sending anonymous letters to residents, he wondered. Council service delivery manager Neil McCann confirmed what Anstiss suspected – the

letter did not originate from the council office. No letter would be sent from council unsigned and impersonating the council was an offence, he said. And that’s got Anstiss wondering. Is it a disgruntled neighbour who wants the fruit for

themselves? But if that’s the case there’s more than enough to share, he said. His response to the anonymous letter was made in a note he attached to the tree. “We respect that this tree is on council property but you don’t nurture it, we do. We are only asking to harvest some of the fruit when it’s ripe, given there will be plenty for you – even though you have not nurtured it.” Anstiss acknowledges the tree belongs to the community, the fruit is there for the taking but no one seems to take it, he said. The tree is not young. It was growing alongside Mill Creek when the area was farmland. When the diggers moved in to start carving out roads for the Lochlea subdivision, the elderly quince was about to fall, but a heartfelt plea by its neighbour Jack Ross, saw it spared. He’d been caring for the tree and was rewarded each year with a bountiful harvest of quince. The digger driver listened and the tree stayed under Ross’ caretaking for many years, before the mantle passed to Anstiss.

Busy end to week for local firefighters By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Firefighters have had a busy end to the working week with a number of vegetation fires causing issues in all corners of the district. Hinds Rural Voluntary Fire Force were the first unit called the fire on Windermere Road. Chief Fire Officer Dave Kingsbury said it started off as a stubble burn that escalated. “It was another one of those ones that somehow managed to get over the fire break and in to older trees and with those older trees there is often a layer of pine needles at the bottom,” he said. “With the vortex from the fire they can get airborne and they did and ended up in some long grass and a bit of baleage on the other side of the road on a neighbouring property.

“It is just one of those things that happens.” Firefighter from Hinds, Ashburton, Willowby and Mayfield all attended the fire. Firefighters were also called to a second vegetation fire in the Hinds area shortly after 4pm that day as well. On Wednesday evening the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to the upper reaches of the Rakaia Gorge to a vegetation fire in a shelter belt. Deputy Chief Fire Officer Dave McLeod said the fire had burnt through around 20 to 30 metres of vegetation under the trees. The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to a medical assist 8.57am on Thursday morning, while the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to two medical assists on Wednesday evening.

In brief Meal kit deliveries up Meal kit delivery service My Food Bag expects to have the biggest weekend in its seven-year history as the impact of coronavirus spreads over New Zealand. In the past 24 hours, they also launched a $139.99 My Back-Up meal option designed to take the hassle of stocking up the pantry with longlife items. Two weeks ago they broke their own record for the total number of meal kits sold, however this weekend was looking likely to be even bigger again. “The orders are stronger than we’ve ever seen before,” Kevin Bowler, chief executive of My Food Bag, said. - NZME

Charges dismissed Former All Black Byron Kelleher has been granted diversion and had his charges dismissed after being arrested for assault in Auckland last year. The 57-cap halfback, who played his last test for New Zealand in 2007 and retired from all rugby in 2012, had his case called yesterday in the Auckland District Court. He was named on Thursday after name suppression lapsed and faced charges of assault and wilful damage allegedly involving his fiancee’s ex-partner. Yesterday, he was granted diversion and his charges were dismissed. Kelleher, 43, was not required to appear in court for a hearing. - NZME

Te Papa closes Te Papa closed its doors to the public from 6pm yesterday for at least two weeks due to concerns over Covid-19. The museum’s board chair Dame Fran Wilde said the decision was made after careful consideration. “We are not able to enforce social distancing within the museum, and we want to protect our community and support the efforts of all of New Zealand to reduce the risk of Covid-19, she said. “The health of our visitors, our staff and our community is of paramount importance.” Staff would continue to work from their offices and there were plans in place to care for collections and provide online access to more museum resources, she said. “We will be creating some fantastic opportunities for people to visit Te Papa from their own living room,” - NZME Wilde said.

■■ RADIANT RAKAIA

Creating movement with movement On the banks of the Rakaia River, near the longest bridge in New Zealand, is a little country town called Rakaia. In the first story of a series about the people and community groups behind this busy rural centre, Susan Sandys talks to fitness instructor Sonita Fawcett

Mum Sonita Fawcett is creating a movement through movement in Rakaia. Being a keen horse-rider with a passion for fitness, the mumof-two decided to establish her own exercise classes in 2013. She had previously worked as a playcentre supervisor and pharmacy technician. To start with, a small group of women came along with their children. It was a once-per-week morning circuit class with attendees revolving around stations set up with exercise equipment. “We all wanted a local exercise class that was child friendly,” Fawcett said. Since then, the classes have increased, and so have the numbers coming along. Today, at her Feel Good Fitness For You programme, she runs two night circuit classes and a morning dance fitness class at the St Andrew’s Church hall on State Highway 1, and one gentle dance fitness class at Dunsandel. Her pupils are men and women of all ages, ranging up to their 80s, and up to 15 attend each class. Fawcett said alongside building the number of classes and

attendance, she has undertaken professional development and her own journey of personal growth. Along the way she has discovered the holistic practice of NIA, which forms the basis of the dance fitness classes as well interval sessions in

the circuit classes. NIA employs 52 precision movements and combines elements of martial arts, dance and mindful movement in time to music. Fawcett discovered NIA in 2017, when she decided to go along to a class in Christchurch.

The class happened to be taken by NIA founder Debbie Rosas, who developed the alternative aerobic and strength training exercise method in America after suffering sports injuries. Initially, NIA stood for non-impact aerobics, but it has since evolved to include neurological integrative practices. “I love fitness so I thought I would go and have a look, it blew me away,” Fawcett said. “The movements we did appeared to be so easy, I didn’t feel like I was working out, but I found that I was sweating and I definitely was working out, it was so much fun,” she said. Fawcett passes her enthusiasm onto her pupils, who come not just for the fitness aspect, but also the fun they have in getting their bodies moving. And the classes include stretches at the end to wind everyone down, with aspects of relaxation and meditation. Fawcett is a certified fitness instructor and registered exercise professional, and her NIA journey has involved her travelling to Australia for workshops as she moves towards gaining her black belt in the practice.

Anzac Day will be recognised in some way By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

There might not be any large scale events, but local Returned and Services Association (RSA) members will still ensure that the fallen are remembered this Anzac Day. All Anzac Day services were cancelled following a nationwide directive on Thursday, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, while Poppy Day has been postponed. The decision means it will be the first time Anzac Day services have been cancelled since they were started in 1915. It is the first time Poppy Day has been postponed since 1922. Ashburton RSA president Merv Brenton said they would still do something small as a way to remember the fallen. “We will go and lay a few wreaths and put up a few cross-

es,” he said. “There have been a few ideas suggested, maybe dressing up mailboxes in red, as something we could do but it is going to be sad that we can’t hold a full service.” Brenton said government regulations banning events of more than 100 people indoors had already had an impact on the club on Cox Street with a number of events being cancelled. “Things are changing all the time, the rules could have changed again in two hours,” he said. “It has certainly affected functions, we had hired rooms for functions that have been cancelled.” Thursday night is club night for the local RSA, which regularly draws more than 100 people along but was well down on numbers this week.

Variety Theatre postpones show No Anzac Day events will take place this year. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

“There were a few that kept away,” he said. “We have to be quite careful with the group that we have, being an older group. “At the end of the day we will be guided by what instructions come from down the road.” Following that announcement, national RSA president BJ Clark said: “We need to consider the demographic we have in our RSA and that would be attending Anzac Day parades.” “It’s our responsibility to remember and acknowledge those

that have served but also to ensure our members and the public are kept safe.” Clark described the virus as a “powerful and dangerous foe”. “RSAs, and the communities they are part of, all over New Zealand, must fight hard to protect our whanau and kaumatua from the transmission of this virus in keeping our proud memories of service and sacrifice. For this reason, RSA has decided that it is in the best interests of all New Zealanders to make these decisions.”

Catholic bishops suspend celebrations of mass New Zealand’s Catholic bishops have announced the suspension of all celebrations of mass, until further notice, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic Bishop of Auckland Patrick Dunn, president of the NZ Catholic Bishops Conference, said the bishops met on Friday morning to carefully consider what needed to be done with mass and other public liturgical gatherings. “We decided that all masses must cease until further notice,” Dunn said. “The bishops are acutely aware of the seriousness of the measures taken by the Government and health authorities in recent days to try to stop Covid-19 from

spreading in the New Zealand community.” Dunn said churches have been told they may stay open for parishioners to visit for private prayer and reflection, but in very small numbers; those attending must follow Ministry of Health social-distancing guidelines and stay at least two metres apart. “Funeral services may continue but they must be brief, with only small numbers of close family and friends allowed. Those attending must also follow the guidelines for social distancing,” he said. Baptisms, weddings and other public liturgical gatherings already planned will be allowed

to proceed, but again, only with very small numbers of close family and friends present, and following the social-distancing guidelines. Similar services not already scheduled must be postponed. “While some of our parishioners, priests and lay-mass helpers will be disappointed by this announcement, others will welcome it, because of the growing community concern about the pandemic and the need, particularly, to protect those most vulnerable,” he said. “This also follows similar moves by Catholic bishops in many other countries. Pope Francis is himself setting the interna-

tional church example by not celebrating public masses, instead live-streaming his daily private mass in the Vatican. The New Zealand church is moving quickly to provide live-streaming here. “The primary concern of the church is the welfare of the public and the safety of all our parishioners, clergy, families, friends, staff and visitors. “We have again today emphasised to all parishioners the importance of good practices of hygiene, including regular washing of hands, covering coughs and sneezes with elbows, not hands, staying at home if sick, and keeping a reasonable distance from other people when in public.”

Variety Theatre Ashburton has announced that they have postponed this year’s first show – It’s Only Rock N Roll Baby. In a statement released to the Guardian yesterday, the organisation said that the decision was not one they took lightly but in the face of the difficult challenge that is Covid-19 it was regrettably the only decision to make in the circumstances. The cast and production crew were told the news officially yesterday after more than a month’s worth of rehearsals. “While this has been an easy decision to make given the circumstances, the committee, production team and cast wish to be mindful of the health and well-being of the community, both on and off the stage.” Anyone who has purchased a ticket for the show online or through the Ticket Rocket call centre will have their ticket refunded within 60 business days and Variety Theatre Ashburton wished to express to the community that there is no need to contact Ticket Rocket as the process has already begun. Anyone who purchased their ticket from the Ashburton Trust Event Centre or via their outlet will need to email support@ticketrocket.co.nz with the following details; name used to purchase ticket, event ticket purchased for, a bank account name and number for a manual bank transfer to be processed to. Anyone wishing to know more information is urged to contact the Ashburton Trust Event Centre for further advice. No potential new dates have been decided. While this show has been postponed, work has already begun by the group on their second planned show of 2020, Jersey Girls. The show will hit the stage in Ashburton November 5-7 and further information will be provided on that show in due course.

Giving normality to kids’ focus for Scouts By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Keeping normality and giving children a break from a stressful time is one reason local scouts are pressing on, even if it means meeting online. Mania-o-roto scout zone leader Michelle Brown said that at the moment scouts groups would continue to meet as normal, but should schools shut or it be required, gatherings can be held online. “There are plans to keep the kids getting educated, it will just be online,” she said. “There would be a group of leaders and they would just get the parents to Skype in to a room if they could.” Activity sheets would also be sent out weekly to the kids that they could complete if they wished, and can video themselves completing activities and send them in to leaders for assessment. “It is important for the kids to have some normality in the next few months and if they can’t get out and hang out with friends they will still have this,” she said. Currently there are one group of scouts heading out on a trip this weekend, but there are no further events planned after that said Brown, and it is likely they would be put on the backburner if they were. “It is probably quite fortunate we are heading in to winter and not summer as there is more on in the summer,” she said.

Fire season moves to open season The fire season has now changed in the Mid South Canterbury area, including the Ashburton District and the high country. This means that a permit is no longer required to light a fire in open air in the high country zone, Ashburton coastal, Timaru coastal and Waimate coastal zones. A restricted fire season will remain for the Geraldine and Waimate Forest zones, permits will continue to be required for

those areas. Principal Rural Fire Officer Rob Hands says the changes have been made after the fire danger indices dropped for the area. The area moved to a restricted fire season in late January, requiring anyone planning on lighting an open air fire to first obtain a permit. Last week Fire and Emergency New Zealand deputy principal rural fire of-

ficer Don Geddes told the Guardian they were disappointed there had been more fire escapes this fire season than in previous years. Unlike many areas in Canterbury north of the Rakaia River the area never moved in to a prohibited fire season. Go to www.checkitsalright.nz to check the fire season in your specific location and for tips to make sure you and your family stay fire safe.

Environment Canterbury is making progress on its investigation into contamination of a stockwater race in Mt Somers, which killed hundreds of fish last week. ECan zone delivery lead Ashburton Janine Holland said multiple parties of interest were assisting the regional council with its enquiries. However, it was still awaiting the results of water sampling tests so could not yet confirm what had affected the race, which runs along Ashburton Gorge Road through the village of Mt Somers. “We ask residents not to speculate about the causes or parties involved in this situation, as it is may impede the investigation’s progress. Environment Canterbury thanks residents who have willingly shared information with us in the last fortnight,” Holland said. She encouraged the community to continue to avoid the race and not allow animals to enter the water. “We have signs along the race and this advice remains in place until we have further information. Ashburton District Council will talk directly with stockwater race users about their access to, and use of, the race.” ECan launched the investigation following hundreds of smelt, trout, native kokopu, koura, freshwater bully and tuna (eel) were discovered dead and dying.

Vegetable seedlings latest panic buying target NZME Garden supplies and vegetable seedlings are the latest target for panic buying and people in isolation keeping busy, as concerns about the Covid-19 coronavirus grow. First it was supermarkets being cleaned out of toilet paper and hand sanitiser, but now it seems spooked shoppers have home-grown vegetables in their sights. Garden centres say seedling sales have gone through the roof while nurseries are scrambling to meet demand. in MasterGardenBarn ton sold out of seedlings on Wednesday. Located near New Plymouth and Waitara, Big Jim’s Garden Centre manager Chantel Bell said the last week had been bedlam. “Veggie seedlings are flying out the door. We have doubled what we would normally order so we order twice a week but we are doubling what comes through the door in regards to veggie seedlings. “All brassicas. The caulis, the broccolis, lettuces. Anything like that.” Bell said first-time gardeners and green-thumbed veterans alike were talking about Covid-19. “They’re just getting ready just in case there’s a shortage of veggies on the market, that sort of thing ... if they’re in isolation it’s something to do in their garden all those sorts of things and panic buying maybe.”

Bell said the seedlings on offer were less well developed. Leslie Lewis, who was shopping at Palmers Garden Centre in New Plymouth, had certainly noticed. “We need to get some silverbeet in and some spinach, but unfortunately it looks like they’ve been well cleared out and there’s just punnets ... little tiny ones which is not really good to me.” Over the road at Mitre 10 Mega, Mike Anderson was also stocking up, and reckoned seedling supplies were dwindling. “I’ve always had a garden and I suppose I’m prompted to increase it slightly at the moment in order to be self-sufficient. “I think I’ve got enough fresh vegetables in my garden to keep me going for about two weeks for me and my family.” Across town at Fairfields Garden Centre, Ari Whakaari was shopping with her partner and young baby, preparing to put in their very first veggie garden. “I’ve just come to get some vegetables so I can plant them and make my own vegetable garden. “It’s because of the virus because the supermarkets are getting cleared out so I thought if I had a back up that would be great.” Whakaari was not doing things by halves. “I’ve got some broccoli, kale, lettuce, beetroot, beans, parsley, spinach and leeks but there wasn’t actually much here – quite a lot of it had already been taken.”

Dogs have a ball in the Hinds Pool Dogs of all shapes and sizes got to enjoy a splash in the Hinds Pool last Sunday to mark the end of the pool’s opening season. Pool treasurer Cindy Wilkins said she saw a video of the Waltham pool from last year and thought it looked like a lot of fun so put it to the committee for this year. “We think there were around 20 dogs throughout the day. I was surprised at the variety but loved seeing so many enjoy the water,” she said. “I had no idea what to expect for this area but we were very happy with the outcome and will now make it an annual thing when we close the pool for the season.” PHOTO ROBYN HOOD 150320-RH-036

Blood donors in short supply NZME New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) is asking eligible, fit and healthy New Zealanders to book an appointment to donate blood. The service has had up to a 30 per cent increase in the number of cancellations and ‘no-shows’ in the past week which is possibly because of Covid-19 concerns amongst donors. “We are asking all eligible healthy blood donors to book an appointment, and keep commitments to donate blood,” said Asuka Burge, national manager marketing and communications, New Zealand Blood Service. “NZBS needs to collect 3500 donations every week to keep up with demand across the country, and we are seeing an increasing

number of cancellations and empty chairs in our donor centres. “Our donor centres are safe places to visit, and we are taking all necessary steps to ensure this stays that way.” NZBS has strict blood donor screening measures in place, which include travel deferrals, to ensure individuals who are unwell, or have recently travelled to high-risk countries are deferred from donating. “Absolutely, if a donor is feeling unwell, they should reschedule or cancel their appointment, but please let us know. Every noshow or cancelled appointment impacts the blood supply and the availability of blood to treat patients in hospitals. “If we know someone is not coming, we can try to fill their

appointment space,” says Asuka. “Unlike toilet paper, blood cannot be stockpiled. Whole blood has a shelf life of just 35 days, which means we must ensure we can continue to meet demand on a weekly basis. “Our current concern is that without a steady number of donations, the blood supply may run into critical levels. This is why we need fit, healthy, eligible Kiwis to book appointments and continue to donate.” To book an appointment to donate visit www.nzblood.co.nz or call 0800 448 325. NZBS has a dedicated working group of experts that includes medical staff and donor care teams to closely monitoring global developments in relation to Covid-19 and advising on any specific actions required.

■■MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

Factors that will close schools By: Natalie Akoorie NZME

All schools and early childhood centres in New Zealand will close if community transmission of Covid-19 is confirmed. The criteria for nationwide school closures developed by the Ministry of Education was released yesterday. And in Parliament on Thursday night Minister of Education Chris Hipkins said bringing forward the Easter school holidays was an option being considered. In the trigger document, an all-school-and-education-centre-closure is ranked level five, the highest risk. Blanket closures would go ahead when there is community transmission of the coronavirus on a national level, according to the document. Schools and centres would initially close for 14 days. That would be reviewed thereafter until public health authorities determine it is safe to reopen. It comes as the Government was on Thursday poised to provide home internet and laptop or tablet devices for about 70,000 schoolchildren in the event that

Minister of Education Chris Hipkins said current public health advice was schools and early learning centres were still safe places for young people. schools have to close. The Government is developing a behind-the-scenes plan for the emergency rollout and had this week surveyed all schools about whether teachers can provide online learning from home, and how many students need devices at home.

The early learning and school responses to Covid-19 criteria ranks situations from risk levels 1 to 5. They are: ■■ Level 1: When a student or staff member has no symptoms but close contact with a confirmed case – track and trace.

Three cases on cruise ship NZME Three people on a cruise ship that visited New Zealand before returning to Sydney have tested positive for Covid-19. Close to 4000 passengers and crew were on board the Ruby Princess before it docked in Sydney and passengers were allowed to disembark. The Princess Cruises-operated Ruby Princess ship completed a relatively short cruise around the Pacific to New Zealand. The Ruby Princess departed from Sydney on March 8. According to cruisemapper. com, the ship was scheduled to visit Fiordland, Dunedin, Akaroa, Wellington, Napier, Tauranga, Auckland and Bay of Islands before returning to Sydney on March 21. The cruise ship returned to Sydney on Thursday after cutting its itinerary short. Just over 1100 crew and close to 2700 pas-

sengers were on board. Doctors tested 13 unwell patients and three found to have the virus. One person who tested positive was a crew member. “Two of the three positive results were people who were passengers on board the ship,” NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard told reporters on Friday. “One of those passengers was not at all well, and was taken off the ship and has been taken to a hospital here in Sydney, and is being cared for. That particular passenger, now patient, is not particularly well.” On board there were some people on board the cruise ship who presented with flu-like symptoms,” Hazzard said. The ship has already left Sydney and is currently at sea, off the New South Wales coast, somewhere between Sydney and Wollongong.

■■ Level 2: When a student or staff member has symptoms and close contact with a confirmed case or tests positive – close school temporarily or for at least 72 hours. ■■ Level 3: When there are cases from multiple families in the same school that could be community transmission – 14 day closure. ■■ Level 4: When there is confirmed community transmission but contained to a geographical area – close all schools and centres in that location for 14 days. ■■ Level 5: Community transmission on a national level – close all schools and centres for at least 14 days. Hipkins said in Parliament current public health advice was schools and early learning centres were still safe places for young people. However, under questioning by National education spokeswoman Nikki Kaye, Hipkins said officials would consider bringing the April school holidays forward. “Bringing forward the school holidays early in order to create some breathing space is an op-

Eartha Scott tries to see the bright spots in her endometriosis-affected life.

PHOTOS SUPPLIED

arch is Endometriosis Awareness Month and if Eartha Scott had her way she would be shouting about it from rooftops up and down the country. Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is found in places outside the uterus. This tissue can form nodules, that in turn causes the surrounding organs to stick unnaturally together and that means pain and lots of it. Scott has suffered the full blast of the condition over the past nine years. She cannot understand how a condition that affects up to one in 10 women and girls in New Zealand goes undiagnosed by so many for so long. Trips to the GP started for Scott when she was around 13 years old. She remembers going with her mother to the doctor time and time again trying to convey to them the excruciating pain that overtook her life every month, only to be repeatedly told that what she was experiencing was normal period pain and to hear the all-too-familiar line – “go home and take some pain relief or a wheat bag may help”. Not at all helpful when the pain associated with this condition has been likened, by some women, to the pain levels associated with labour, or, as others put it, standard period pain times 50. “Who would offer a woman in labour over-the-counter pain relief? Nobody, because that would be silly,” Scott said. One of the symptoms of endometriosis can be bowel problems, which led to a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome for Scott and off to the dietitian she went. “I did everything the dietitian told me to do and I ate all the right foods. “But it didn’t make any difference and why would it? That was not what I had.” Years of having the contraceptive injection Depo Provera did provide some respite as during that time her periods stopped completely. After six years of injections Scott decided enough was enough and she took herself off that treatment in the hope her body had managed

to sort itself out and she could lead a normal pain-free life. Wrong, along with the return of her menstrual cycle, came the intense pain and resulting low energy levels. It was at this time Scott picked up her laptop and went searching the internet for answers and she found them on a Facebook page called All about Annie’s Endometriosis. Here Scott read of women and girls telling their stories, many with the same symptoms as her. To Scott it was a lightbulb moment and it felt like she had just taken a big step forward in her journey of finding out why her body was behaving this way. Armed with information gleaned from Annie’s Facebook page and from some other internet stops she had made, Scott went back to her doctor and asked about endometriosis. Scott was floored when the doctor said he had heard of the condition and yet he still hadn’t suggested to her that is what it could be. Until Scott mentioned it herself the word had never been so much as mentioned in nine years. Due to her medical insurance Scott was able to avoid the incredibly long public waiting list to see a surgeon. Finally some action. Scott was elated when her surgeon agreed to perform a laparoscopic investigation as this is the only way to fully diagnose endometriosis. The surgery took 45 minutes and the diagnosis was confirmed as being endometriosis. “It took him only 45 minutes and yet it took me nine years to get to him. That’s appalling.” Diagnosis achieved, Scott could then get on with her life dealing with her condition – wrong, a very big wrong. Three days after the surgery Scott collapsed at home. It turns out that she had suffered an undetected perforated bowel during surgery and was in a bad way, suffering from septic shock. Scott was grateful she wasn’t home alone at the time because any delay in getting her to hospital could have proved fatal for her. Ashburton Hospital took one look at her and sent her straight up to Christchurch, where the

hell and back endometriosis

Eartha Scott has been to hell and back with endometriosis. Reporter Heather Mackenzie spoke to Eartha about her nine-year journey of pain, frustration and a near-death experience.

Eartha Scott knows that taking the time to stop and smell the flowers is vital to her mental well-being. surgeon said if he didn’t operate straight away she could very well die, so into the operating theatre for the second time in three days she went. Waking up after the surgery Scott’s world came crashing down again. Yes she was alive and grateful for that, but the twenty-two-year-old was left with tubes sticking out of her stomach – a stoma with colos-

tomy bag attached. Scott spoke about having this “thing” connected to her 24/7, how she was afraid and felt like her whole life had been taken away. “For seven months I had to cope with this noisy, sometimes leaking bag attached to me. There I was, a young 22-year-old, left feeling very self-conscious and afraid to go out.”

Exercise for Eartha is not as easy as it used to be, so getting out in the fresh air with her friend’s dogs Bry and Jett brings a smile to her face. After spending nine days in hospital, five of them not being able to move at all, she was sent home, with a body that was still playing tricks on her. Because of the time of inactivity Scott had to remind her legs how to work. She said strong support from her family and friends during that time was a major factor in getting her back on her feet and feeling

slightly more positive about the future. “Support is vital in dealing with this condition, be it family, friends or your partner, everyone needs somebody to believe what they are experiencing is real and not all in their head.” In the past eight months Scott has undergone a total of six surgeries, one of them was to remove the dreaded colostomy bag and

stoma. Glad to see that gone Scott said she is not out of the woods yet. “There is no cure for endometritis, only ways to manage the symptoms. I have to make sure I get enough sleep, as fatigue is a huge problem for me and I am still living with lots of pain.” Scott said she is lucky to have an understanding employer and feels for women affected by this condition who don’t. She pointed out that not many employers would be happy for their staff to have a week off every month. Ideally Scott would like to see GPs have a greater understanding of what endometriosis is and what the symptoms are. The good news is there has been some movement from the Ministry of Heath on advising GPs and other health professionals on what to look for. On March 2 this year the ministry released a 15-page document for health professionals outlining the diagnosis and management of endometriosis in New Zealand. The ministry’s aim is to improve the diagnosis and management in primary and secondary health care through early recognition of suspected symptoms, empowering primary healthcare practitioners to make a suspected diagnosis and begin management, appropriate training for secondary and tertiary caregivers and improved equity of access and health outcomes for patients. Scott wants to encourage all women to speak out if they think this is what they may be suffering from. “Just keep asking your GP to investigate further and don’t be afraid to keep asking. “Just because they have a certificate on their wall it doesn’t mean they know more about your body than you do.”

■■COVID-19

Aussie death toll rises The Australian death toll from coronavirus has risen to seven after an 81-yearold woman died in hospital on Thursday night, following a record surge in new cases. Meanwhile, bars, cafes and restaurants are bracing for new restrictions on indoor gatherings after the most dramatic day of the outbreak so far, when the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the country would be closing its borders and Tasmania effectively shut itself off from the rest of the country. It came as new restrictions were placed on medicine purchases, the Aussie dollar fell to a 17-year low of 55 US cents, the RBA announced an emergency rate cut and national carrier Qantas stood down 20,000 employees amid what CEO Alan Joyce described as a crisis “worse than the GFC”. Australia now has 756 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with 353 in New South Wales, 150 in Victoria, 144 in Queensland, 42 in South Australia, 52 in Western Australia, 10 in Tasmania, four in the Australian Capital Territory and one in the Northern Territory. Seven people have died – one in Western Australia and six in New South Wales – and 43 have recovered.

Calling on Kylie for help The Covid-19-era world is seeing some strange things, like toilet paper wars, empty bars – and the Surgeon General asking Kylie Jenner to tell her fans to go home. As global health authorities continue to urge young people to take it seriously, Surgeon General Jerome Adams resorted to calling on influencers to play a role in keeping the community safe. “I have a 15 and 14-year-old and the more I tell them not to do something, the more they want to do it,” Dr Adams said. “We need to get Kylie Jenner and social media influencers out there, in helping folks understand: this is serious – people are dying out there,” Dr Adams said. He said images of kids on spring break partying at the beach dismayed many Americans who are self-isolating in their homes.

■■UNITED STATES

Cautious optimism on the floor Stocks capped a wobbly day on Wall Street with solid gains yesterday, reflecting cautious optimism among investors that emergency action by the US government and central banks will cushion the global economy from a looming recession caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The swings in the market were markedly less volatile than recent days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained almost 200 points, or 0.9 per cent. The S&P 500 rose 0.5 per cent after bouncing between a gain of 2.9 per cent and a loss of 3.3 per cent early. That would be a notable change in normal times, but the index has had eight straight days where it bounced up or down between 4.9 per cent and 12 per cent. In another sign that shellshocked investors were becoming a little more willing to hold riskier assets, stocks of smaller companies rose far more than the rest of the market. Those stocks had taken some of the heaviest losses since the sell-off began in early March. Markets have been so volatile because investors are weighing the increasing likelihood of a recession on one hand against huge, emergency efforts to prop up the economy on the other. Markets got more of each yesterday. The number of Americans filing for unemployment bene-

fits jumped by 70,000 last week, more than economists expected, in one of the first signs of layoffs sweeping across the country. Wide swaths of the economy are grinding closer to a standstill, from the travel industry to restaurants, as authorities ask Americans to stay home to slow the spread of the virus. Another weak manufacturing report, this time in the mid-Atlantic region, added to the worries. But the world’s largest central banks announced their latest efforts to support financial markets and the economy. The European Central Bank launched an expanded programme to buy up to 750 billion euros ($820 billion) in bonds, and the Bank of Eng-

land cut its key interest rate to a record low of 0.1 per cent. The Federal Reserve unveiled measures to support money-market funds and the borrowing of dollars as investors in markets worldwide hurry to build up dollars and cash. The dash for cash has strained markets, and sellers of even high-quality bonds say they’re having difficulty finding buyers at reasonable prices. Many of the Fed’s moves, which are getting revived after being used in the 2008 financial crisis, are aimed at smoothing out operations in such markets. Investors also appeared encouraged by reports that China is set to ramp up stimulus spending after the province where the virus first emerged

showed no new infections on Wednesday. The price of US crude oil notched its biggest one-day jump on record yesterday, climbing nearly 24 per cent. With the gain, oil recouped nearly all its losses from the day before. Still, the market will likely remain volatile until investors see more economic data that shows just how badly the outbreak is hurting the economy. The Nasdaq, which is dominated by tech giants such as Apple, gained 2.3 per cent. The Russell 2000 index of smaller company stocks surged 6.8 per cent. The S&P 500, which drives movements for most 401(k) accounts more than other indexes, is down roughly 29 per cent since its record exactly a month ago and close to its lowest point since late 2018. European stocks swung from gains to losses and back to gains. Asian markets dropped following the brutal 5.1 per cent loss for US stocks the prior day. Ultimately, investors say they need to see the number of new infections stop accelerating for the market’s extreme volatility to ease. The total number of known infections has topped 220,000 worldwide, including nearly 85,000 people who had recovered. The death toll has crept toward 10,000.

Shorters doing their bit As a response to Covid-19, Shortland Street will not air on Fridays from March 27. “This scheduling change allows the cast and crew some buffer room in their delivery of the show to TVNZ. It also prioritises everyone’s safety and wellbeing,” a spokesperson for South Pacific Pictures said in a statement. “This move is in line with productions around the world who are making small changes to ensure they can keep their shows on air, even if filming needs to stop temporarily.”

Meghan back and sparkly We all knew it: Meghan’s first appearance back on British soil after the couple’s announcement to leave their position as senior royals was always going to be a talking point. How would she act? What would she wear, and what – if any – would be the hidden messages behind her outfits? But it was the makeup that did it. Since her and Harry’s announcement to step down, Meghan has been keeping a low profile. But now its bucket-loads of glamour and a healthy dose of Hollywood sparkle. We’re seeing a return to the makeup she’d wear preHarry: bronzed cheeks, smokey eyes and a full, glossy brick-red lips.

OUR VIEW

It’s been a week like no other

T

ime for a bit of reflection, I think. This week has been, quite simply, nuts. I realise there is probably a small portion of our community who have been through something like this before, but for the majority of us it’s uncharted territory. We’re very much diving into the unknown here and hoping that, at some point, we will surface. And that’s probably the most important thing to remember. Yes, there’s a lot of bad stuff out there about what might be sitting just around the corner and as businesses wonder what just awaits for them it’s hard to see the positives. But we will emerge from the murk at some point.

There will come a time when this virus has disappeared and becomes nothing more than a part of our history. And, just like those who have been before us and faced similar situations, there is opportunity at every turn as well. Something that it could pay to remember. I’ve noticed over the course of the week a few things that make

me think this district is coming to the realisation that things aren’t that far away from us. It’s been noticeably more quiet in and around the Ashburton CBD. Coffee shops aren’t quite the bustling hives of activity they usually are, shops are seeing their doors stay closed a little longer each time between customers and the streets don’t feel quite as cluttered with people around every turn. That’s concerning. No one knows how exactly to act in this situation, or what the right thing to do is, but one thing we must do as a community is ensure that we support our local businesses as much as we possibly can, and to do so for as long as we

possibly can. Safely, of course. There’s been a lot of correspondence about issues at supermarkets and panic-buying which is a real shame. Our first thought in such situations should be for the vulnerable. Most importantly, the elderly and the young. Some supermarkets have introduced special shopping times so certain people can visit and go about their shop without all the other hoopla but it’s never going to work for everyone. It doesn’t take that much to show a bit of courtesy and lend a hand, or ensuring that someone in greater need is afforded an opportunity, ahead of yourself.

Hearing stories of young families arriving to stock up on essentials, like nappies and baby formula, only to find the shelves empty, is heart breaking and a bit of a blight on us as a community. We can be better than that, we know we can, it’s just a case of doing it. By the time we get to Monday morning next week, who knows what sort of place we will find ourselves in. These are new waters for everyone and we’re still figuring out just how much we have to tread to stay afloat. Stay safe, be healthy and look out for others is the best approach to the next few days. And of course, remember to wash your hands.

Our behaviour in times of stress A

dversity brings out basic human behaviour. Let’s face it, there are a range of behaviours we all display when under stress, and the stress is mounting. We have the ability to regulate our response, so it has been fascinating to watch human behaviour at the very beginning of what will be a prolonged period of adversity. If society behaviour could ever have two distinct responses from leaders, then this has never been more apparent than this week. Our PM announces an economic response to what is a global event no-one has ever been through in living memory. Our opposition leader says he would have done better and quicker. Don’t credit me with this next statement, but unless you have led a country through the horror of March 15, then the devastation of the White Island eruption and now the beginnings of the most stressful event for everyone, shut up Simon Bridges. His leadership style in adversity is to automatically respond with a typical National Party tactic – criticise and divide. In education Hekia Parata used this to brutally squash any opposition to her national standards, as well as push for charter schools in a bid to divide education. In classic Jacinda style, our PM responded by simply saying now is the time for unity, not political point scoring. I doubt we would have seen such profound leadership that is

concerned for New Zealanders, from any other recent prime minister. Perhaps local shoppers could look to embrace the community well-being approach being demonstrated by Jacinda Ardern. The behaviour to buy more than needed and hoard is simply selfish. It says, I want for me, and all others come second. Yet the people who take part in this hysteria have forgotten how they come to be able to be in a position to buy in bulk. Human society is interdependent. No amount of retreating from the world will enable us to survive. How do the night shift workers who process our meat and vegetables feel when they finally get to the supermarket, to discover the growing number of empty shelves? Or the farming families, who rely on coming in only so often to stock up, all the while stressing about keeping their farm going to produce the basic commodities for us? How about the multiple groups of lower wage

earners who can only shop after pay day? They may be the person that cleans your workplace and prevent the rapid spread of the virus, yet affluent citizens treat them as lower class. Have we forgotten already that we did not achieve the level of society we enjoy in the last few years? We have succeeded because those before us sacrificed and endured, and now, as elderly, they are brutally brushed aside so that entitled households have extra beans. Luckily, they have also purchased the paper to deal with said beans. Then, to the utterly thoughtless who have already put our health system and local medical centres on semi-lockdown, wow, your inconsiderate behaviour is to be celebrated, like getting news that petrol is doubling in price. As a family who has to have regular and, at times, immediate contact with health

professionals, we were disgusted at the disregard for medical centre rules that left them no choice but to virtually shut up shop. Thanks for unnecessarily putting our frontline health workers own health at risk. I hope you needed all the extra tissues you bought for that cold sore you so desperately wanted someone to look at. So, a bit of a whinge and now, for something I’m truly grateful for. Thank you to the big guy in the sky that at least our country is not being led by the most incompetent leader in the world. In true stupid style, Trump released this statement on March 18, “people are dying who have never died before”. Now that is viral behaviour I never want to see spread. Mall retailers may have to stay open By Kirsty Wynn

the worker said. “The Government needs to order the temporary closure of non-essential businesses that have faceto-face contact with the public.” A spokeswoman for Scentre Group, which owns Westfield in New Zealand and Australia, said concerns from any retailers should be raised with centre management. “We are engaging directly with retailers on a case-by-case basis as they manage their business through this volatile period,” the spokeswoman said. “We encourage our retailers to keep talking to us directly about their specific needs. “If retailers are in doubt as to who to speak to, contact your local Westfield centre management in the first instance.” The Scentre spokeswoman said health and safety were paramount and stores had comprehensive cleaning systems in place. “It’s important to give retailers the opportunity to trade and engage with customers throughout this period, especially given shopping centres are regarded as ‘essential activities’,” she said. Malls had increased the routine cleaning of frequently touched hard surfaces, including in car parks.

by health authorities. This had some store owners worried. “We obviously want to stay open but we need to know our rights if we don’t have the staff or if there are no customers,” one store owner said. And some retail workers expressed concern for their own health if customers kept coming in. “We have to be there because our employers want to stay in business, but it’s putting us at risk,”

Air New Zealand boss Greg Foran warned yesterday that the airline industry would be changed by the impact of coronavirus. “Not all airlines are going to survive this,” he told media. His comments follow an announcement by the Government that it will open a $900 million loan facility to the airline. Foran said that the $900m figure was the amount the airline requested and that he was confident that it would be enough to see the airline through a few tough months. He would not, however, speculate on how long this would last the airline or how long coronavirus would impact the industry. Foran said that Air New Zealand has already seen an 85 per cent reduction in revenue from international flights and as much as 70 per cent on the domestic front. He said overall flight numbers had decreased from 3600 a week to under 1500. “You can’t take costs out of your business quickly enough to counter that,” he said. Air New Zealand had suggested earlier that it was looking to cut as much as a third of its staff and Foran confirmed there would still be job cuts. He would not go into details on these cuts but said it was necessary to make changes across the business to ensure Air New Zealand was in a good position to recover once the pandemic subsides. Is the bailout enough? Air New Zealand shares sank by more than a third as investors judged the government’s $900m bailout to be too small. Finance Minister Grant Robertson said the government loan would keep the airline afloat, but

that it is at the cost of any future dividend payments while any debt is outstanding. The shares resumed trading yesterday after being halted this week while the airline and government finalised the deal. They tumbled 38.8 per cent to 95 cents at 12.40pm, wiping out more than $660m of shareholder value and valuing the airline at just $1.07 billion. The airline started the year at $2.93 a share for a market value of $3.29b. Rickey Ward, New Zealand equity manager at JBWere, said the size of the loan was too small given there was speculation that $2b-to-$3b was needed. The loan will come in two tranches – $600m at an effective interest rate expected to be between 7 and 8 per cent, followed by $300m at a rate of 9 per cent As part of the deal, Air New Zealand cancelled its upcoming dividend payment of 11 cents per share, or $123.5m. The company also agreed not to pay dividends while the loan is outstanding. The government can seek repayment through a capital raising after six months, or converting the debt to equity. Robertson told media that the support was chosen for speed, with a risk of a shutdown a real possibility. He said the airline was confident the loan would get it through the current crisis. Robertson said he didn’t want to discuss the conditions of the financing, but did say the airline has to supply the government with business plans and deal with “various regulatory matters”. Grant Williamson, a director at Hamilton Hindin Greene, said the bailout was just the start, and that the market’s reaction showed in-

vestors didn’t think it was enough. “The government will do as much as they possibly can in order to save the company,” he said. “Air New Zealand is definitely required in New Zealand.” Robertson said the government’s 52 per cent stake could rise if the loan was converted to equity, but that the airline believed it was in a strong enough position to keep going. The government is currently of the view that the airline will repay the two-year loan, but Robertson noted the situation was “very fluid”. Williamson said travel patterns are going to change as a result of the outbreak, especially as companies get used to using teleconferencing, and the future for airlines around the world had become increasingly murky. The government last bailed out the national carrier in 2001 when Air New Zealand’s purchase of Ansett turned out to be a dud. The government of the time injected $885m of new equity into the airline to prop it up rather than let it collapse. Separately, the government is working with the airline to ensure key services are maintained, including repatriation flights and critical cargo lines. Redeployed airline staff could also assist the government’s health response. The government announced on Thursday $270m of support for aviation services, largely covering government fees and keeping air traffic services operating. It signalled a $600m package to support the aviation sector. Robertson said the government wants to keep major existing routes open, such as Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and North America. Yesterday’s loan also safeguard the domestic network, he said.

Personal bests by the dozen P21

Sports Awards evening canned, awards to proceed Mid Canterbury’s premier sporting night, the Mid Canterbury Sports Awards, is the latest big ticket event to be cancelled this week but the actual awards will still continue – just in a different format. Sport Canterbury’s regional manager, Jan Cochrane, said in a statement late this week that it was disappointing to have to withdraw the one night of the year where all sports came together to celebrate the successes of the past 12 months, but there was no other choice. “The awards recognise and celebrate the success of our elite athletes,” Cochrane said. “We are disappointed to make this decision but with the challenging times ahead for our communities, it made sense. “We are following the Ministry of Health criteria for events asking to avoid non-essential events which may facilitate the spread of Covid-19.” But while the actual awards ceremony won’t go ahead, Cochrane said it was critical that the region still acknowledged the efforts of those who had performed outstandingly during the judging period and thus the awards won’t be lost. The Mid Canterbury office of Sport Canterbury will continue to accept nominations for all awards up to the closing date of Thursday, April 9, 2020. Nominees will still be judged and all sports and nominees will be advised on the next steps following that process to ensure recipients are honoured appropriately.

“We are working through ideas to just how this will happen,’’ Cochrane said. “We will continue to accept nominations up to the close-off day and then judging will take place and later recipients will be honoured.

“As a community, we rely on this annual celebration of sporting dedication, to recognise Mid Canterbury athletes, coaches, administrators and officials, from the grass roots to elite levels of performance. It is a special opportunity each year to celebrate

the best of the best.” Cochrane urged sporting organisations across the district to keep the entries coming in for the various categories that form the awards and anyone wishing to know more information could contact her directly.

While there will not be any awards evening, judging will still take place for this year’s Mid Canterbury Sports Awards.

More codes bail out

By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

There are few sporting codes (if any) still standing as more organisations put competition plans on ice. The Government’s response to the escalating coronavirus pandemic has forced most sporting governing bodies to defer current and upcoming competitions and events. On Thursday, Squash New Zealand announced all national and district run competitions, events and training programmes until May 1 had been suspended, effective immediately. The Ashburton Squash Club confirmed its summer league, interclub competition and organised coaching sessions had been postponed. “This is incredibly disappointing for us but not unexpected given all other sports have also done something similar,” a club spokesperson said. A Celtic Squash Club spokesperson said it was a hard decision to make with “mixed responses from everyone”. “At the end of the day, our health is more important than squash.” The Fight Night South event which was to be held in June and feature heavyweight boxer Shane Cameron has been postponed. “It’s obviously not the outcome we wanted, but we need to keep everyone’s health and safety in mind during this time,” an event spokesperson said. The South Island Golf Croquet teams event which was to be held at Waireka today has also been cancelled. All organised squash leagues have been postponed until May. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

Tennis competitions, prize-giving called off By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

The local tennis season has come to an abrupt end due to the Covid-19 crisis. Mid Canterbury Tennis confirmed, in a post on their Facebook page yesterday, all remaining junior and open grade interclub tennis had been cancelled. Next weekend’s Mid Canterbury Seniors Championships have been called off as a result. Organisers are hoping to reschedule the event for later in the year. A prize-giving event which was to occur at the conclusion of junior club tennis today has also been abandoned. A Mid Canterbury Tennis spokesperson said all prize winners would be notified this week. The decision – like several other codes in the district – follows directives from its governing body Tennis NZ. The national body issued a statement on Thursday about all organised competitions until at least 2 May 2020. “Tennis NZ and its regions recommend all tennis associations, afiliates and clubs adopt this position and cancel all or-

ganised tennis competitions under their mandate until 2 May.” This includes all interclub

competitions, organised club tournaments and events, midweek competitons and organised club nights.

■■RUGBY

Pay cuts likely for rugby stars The hits keep coming for rugby as a large contingent of New Zealand players in England prepare for potential pay cuts in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak which threatens to cripple the global game. Reports from England, in both the Telegraph and Daily Mail, suggest up to seven Premiership clubs will this week ask players to take a 25 per cent pay cut after the competition was suspended until at least April 24. With Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday suggesting the UK may need three months to get ahead of the coronavirus curve, the chances of rugby resuming at any level next month appears remote. The prospect of no games and no gate takings, which for some English teams contribute 30 per cent of revenue, has clearly spooked professional clubs, many of whom now fear they may go under in the current climate. Cutting wages would be a breach of contract, and so players would have to agree to the proposal. The players’ union and association are expected to step in to assist with negotiations. Wasps are one club mentioned and they have high-profile New Zealanders including Lima Sopoaga, Brad Shields, Malakai Fekitoa, Jeff Toomaga-Allen and Jimmy Gopperth on their books. Jacob Umaga, the nephew of Tana, is also on the roster. Former All Blacks midfielder Francis Saili plays for Harlequins, another club reportedly keen to cut wages. Unlike New Zealand, where the national body pays the players, clubs in England are privately run. New Zealand Rugby hasn’t ruled out asking its players to take a pay cut and this may, in fact, be entirely likely with wages directly linked to around 36.5 per cent of the national body’s income. New Zealand player wages may, therefore, hinge on plans to stage local derby matches while Super Rugby is suspended – plans that become more challenging with each day and new government protection measures. News of potential pay cuts in England comes as the Pro14, which features teams from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, South Africa and Italy, opt to suspend their season indefinitely, going as far as to cancel their final which was set to take place in Cardiff on June 20. Such a decision was not totally unexpected, but it may have major ramifications for the July tests when Wales and Scotland are scheduled to face the All Blacks, and Ireland are supposed to visit Australia. While those countries are locked out of not just competitive matches but training for the foreseeable future, the July tests become increasingly tenuous. That prospect further threatens New Zealand Rugby’s bottom line.

3500 tournament going ahead By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Organisers of the Tinwald Golf Club’s 3500 tournament have decided to proceed with plans to host the event next weekend. It was decided following a meeting among the management committee members to forge ahead with the tournament. However the club has not ruled out discontinuing its plans should further developments around Covid-19 occur. Tinwald Golf Club men’s club captain Bruce Collins said about 170 golfers and support staff were expected for the tournament. “Golf is an outdoor sport and you’re not in close contact. “We’re nowhere near that 500 mark. “We’re just going to have to manage the after-match function.” When asked if the post-event function was also outdoors, Collins said the majority of it was. “It is something we’ll have to monitor.” The Government announced stiffer mass gathering regulations on Thursday where gatherings of more than 100 people at indoor events were banned. It followed an announcement by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday where a blanket restriction on indoor and outdoor gatherings of 500 or more people was moved. Any players who have been overseas or in self-isolation will be prohibited from the tournament. Entries to the event were still flowing in over the past few days, Collins said. “If things change over the next few days we may reverse our decision.” The Rakaia Golf Club cancelled two of its scheduled events due to Covid-19 concerns. There have been mass cancellations and postponements of community sporting competitions and events in response to the evolving crisis. ■■RUGBY LEAGUE

Warriors commit to the NRL ‘indefinitely’ The Warriors have committed to staying in the NRL amid the coronavirus pandemic. Soon after the Australian and New Zealand governments had announced they would close their borders, CEO Cameron George said the Warriors had met to confirm their desire to remain after spending this week in camp in Kingscliff in northern New South Wales ahead of their second-round game against the Canberra Raiders in Robina tonight. They’ll now follow their ‘home’ game at Cbus Super Stadium with a trip to Sydney to face the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Lottoland on Friday, March 27. George said it was a testing time but the group had decided to stay in the competition. “The entire squad is locked in and ready to go,” said George. “They understand the issues that different individuals got on the table. But they’re sticking together ... [The NRL] have called on us and we’ve stepped up to the task.” “If we were told to leave your

family and live in another country for an indefinite period, not many would ... we’re very proud of the players. “The deciding factor was that it’s our time to be leaders in the community and rugby league ... we’re gonna stand tall and be leaders and take it on. “These guys aren’t falling away from the challenge ahead.” Players had to borrow gear and adapt. “Our players have been asked to relocate to another country – unplanned – and continue to play in the competition, away from their families. If that is the case, then we need to make sure they have everything that their normal lives provide them, as much as is possible.” That includes time with wives, partners and children, and George indicated that “a number” of families had indicated they would like to make the trip. “But who pays, where do they go, where do they stay ... that all needs to be sorted out, in terms of logistics,” said George.

The Warriors intend to take a full part in the 2020 NRL competition.

Wives, partners and children would be required to be in isolation for 14 days on arrival in Australia, and wouldn’t be able to stay near the team’s Kingscliff base in northern NSW for that reason. After that fortnight, they could relocate to the same area. Meanwhile, the Warriors say

they are close to locking down some loan players, who could be added as early as next week. There are 23 players in Australia at coach Stephen Kearney’s disposal (four are on development contracts) with another four sent over on Wednesday, although they won’t be available until ear-

ly April (due to isolation requirements). “There is certainly a chance it [loan players] could happen next week ... it’s not unrealistic,” Warriors recruitment boss Peter O’Sullivan told the Herald. “We need to re-calibrate after injuries and other things we can’t foresee [this weekend]. “We have some balls being juggled in the air and soon we will be clearer about what we need in the next few weeks and beyond.” O’Sullivan has spoken to most clubs – “apart from the ones who are in dire straits with injuries themselves” – and believes Wednesday’s cancellation of the second tier state Cup competitions could also change the dynamic. “If they can’t play reserve grade, the best way to get a run could be giving them a couple of weeks with us,” said O’Sullivan. “If players are coming back from injury, they might need a gallop.” Round two of the NRL was planned to go ahead this weekend.

NBL in a good place – Nelson

The Ashburton Swim Team at the end of the New Zealand Junior Festival Makos Zone Event last weekend. Back row: Pip White (coach), Phoebe McKenzie, Isabella Carr, Lucie Hood, Harrison Doak, Finn Veix, Liam Chalke, Jasmine Chalke, Bailey Tait (manager). Front row: Ella McDowell, Cooper Ward, Eliza McKenzie, Emily Carr, Chloe Lowe, Charlotte Doak and Nina McKenzie (manager).

■■ SWIMMING

PBs by the dozen The talented young Ashburton Swim Team produced exceptional returns in Timaru last weekend. More than 80 personal bests were recorded by the 13-person

team at the New Zealand Junior Festival Makos Zone Event. Chloe Lowe and Emily Carr also earned podium finishes during the competition. Lowe finished second in

the 50m and 200m breastroke events. Carr notched a third place in the 50m freestyle. A number of top 10 placings were also recorded by the team

during the meet. About 285 swimmers up to the age of 12 were in action at the three-day event, which finished on Sunday. Participants came from around the South Island.

General manager Justin Nelson has no doubts the men’s National Basketball League will survive the coronavirus. The League has postponed the start of the 2020 season and they’re now considering the feasibility of a modified competition that could potentially start in either late May or June. The league, which was meant to start in April, has been through some tough financially times in recent years. The Franklin Bulls were named to debut this season, replacing the Supercity Rangers, who breached their Participation Agreement last year. Nelson says the clubs and the league are in a lot healthier situation now. “I think in the last 12 months we’ve really shored up our business, our projected revenue at the moment is three-times higher than what it was 12 to 18 months ago.” “We’ve been working very hard with our teams for the last 18 months on the health and sustainability of their business so I’m confident that with the right decisions in what are unprecedented times, we can survive it as a business, absolutely.” Nelson says they’re working on a modified competition with broadcast partners Sky Sport, all eight NBL men’s teams and key stake holders. A modified 2020 competition could only commence, at the earliest, in May or June. “We are dealing with an unprecedented moment in our lives and while it comes with a level of uncertainty, the NBL Men’s Board is working diligently to ensure the health and sustainability of the teams, the integrity of the competition and the well-being of players, coaches and employees is at the forefront of every decision.”

■■NETBALL

Players’ association supports NZ Netball decision Netball New Zealand has made the decision to postpone the 2020 ANZ Premiership for two weeks due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The decision was made following the New Zealand Government’s announcement on Thursday regarding indoor mass gatherings. The postponement will take effect immediately for the scheduled games in round 2 and round 3 that were due to be played on March 22/23 and 28/29/30. Chief executive Jennie Wyllie said the decision had been made due to uncertainty in a rapidly changing environment and their desire to protect the well-being of players, staff and volunteers.

“Protecting the health of our netball players, officials, volunteers and staff is our number one priority, and that means we need to consider their welfare and well-being alongside the advice of Ministry of Health and government,” she said. “We will continue to monitor the situation in New Zealand and follow the information and consultation with the appropriate channels. “We understand it is disappointing for all of those involved and our fans, but safety is our top priority.” The announcement also affects the Beko Netball League, which sits directly below the ANZ Premiership, with Netball NZ opt-

ing to suspend the competition at this time. New Zealand Netball Players’ Association executive manager Steph Bond supported the decision. “We are all in this together –

Netball NZ, players and Netball staff across the country along with stakeholders and partners of the game. We fully support Netball NZ’s people first strategy and the need to align this with the advice of the government.

“While there is no play at the moment, when the players do get the opportunity to get back on court they will be looking forward to netball, playing a part in supporting the country recover from the impacts of the virus.” The ANZ Premiership completed its opening round in Dunedin on Monday night when the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel and Splice Construction Magic’s match was closed to the public. The decision to return to play will be reviewed in just over a week and Netball NZ remains in close consultation with ANZ Premiership teams regarding the season ahead. The 2020 season is planned to recommence from round 4.

Barron will be out of action for 6-8 weeks while he recuperates, but he’s obviously really looking forward to being able to freely move around without the pain. Majestic Hurricane hasn’t been completely out of form in the past year, managing the odd placing, such as a distant but credible third at the Jewels behind Sundees Son and Winterfell and ahead of Majestic Man.

ing a drought which stretches back to winning twice in a week at Addington early last year. But a bigger boost came recently when Barron learned he was finally getting the operation he needs, which happened in Christchurch on Wednesday. “You just have to wait in a queue with no date or end in sight and hope there’s a cancellation or something.”

and I was driving at the races until recently – it’s just the walking around that’s a problem, and that’s a pretty big one,” said Barron. Barron had horses engaged at Addington and Motukarara last weekend and wasn’t present at either meeting due to “feeling pretty sore”. It was thus a rather timely boost when Majestic Hurricane regained winning form at Addington, end-

Many would have noticed Ken Barron literally hobbling around in recent months. This is the legacy of a smash at the Ashburton workouts back in 2002 which led to a hip replacement a few years later. Then last year Barron was trampled by a young horse and “the bone broke away from the rod inside the leg”. “I can still drive the horses okay

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Your ability to project into the future is even better than usual, so use it to avoid getting into a position where the tide will come in over your head. Some risks aren’t worth taking. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Most voting doesn’t happen on a ballot, rather it occurs in moments of social validation through the investment of attention, interest and time. You’ll get many votes today. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Your belief about what things mean will add dimension to this year’s passions and quests. Loved ones will accept your help and act on your advice. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): When you get something new, your first assignment is usually figuring out where to put it. Everything needs a place. Things have to have their place for you to know how you’re going to use them. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You started a venture charitably, giving attention and money without expecting something in return. Now, something different must happen for this trade of time and resources to be equitable. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Test your theories. Reality is ruled by timing and the availability of resources. Things that fit together in physical space will fit together in other ways, too. The rhythm of the day will be dictated by such logistics. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Social media has made professional and social outreach much more accessible. There was a time in which it wasn’t so easy to find people as it is now. Today, you’ll utilise this to fill a position or need. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): When you get good advice, you’ll pass it on, but maybe you won’t take it. You’re holding out for something that resonates on many levels, something that makes both poetic and logical sense. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Sound rules environments, often uncomfortably. Consider who is talking more or generating noise otherwise. The noisiest one is the one who is in charge. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Not getting what you want comes with problems that you know about. Getting what you want comes with a whole set of new and different problems. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Imagine bigger – not because bigger is better but because it’s empowering to understand the edges of scale. Smaller living can feel enormous but only when you know the full range. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Social influence has your eye adjusting to new trends. Fashions change, and you change right along with them. Soon, you’ll lead instead of following this tide.
