every day instead and said while the separation had been difficult, the couple could certainly understand the reason behind it. “But rightly so, no two ways about it, as a country we have done better than anywhere I think,” Henry said. He said it was a time which reminded him of the hardships of World War Two, which both he and Joy had lived through as they grew up in the United Kingdom. The couple migrated with their young family in 1966, settling in Ashburton where Henry practised as a doctor for many years. Today he still lives in the house where the couple brought up their children.

Henry and Joy Green have been through the hardship of war, but nothing prepared them for seven weeks apart. Joy went into Radius Millstream about two weeks prior to the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown which shut the resthome’s doors. During that two weeks, the 85-yearold had a visit every single day from her dedicated husband of 62 years and father of her four children. “I was going in everyday until the lockdown, and then that was that,” Henry, 92, recalled. He resorted to phoning his wife
“You just have to accept these things. We haven’t got people dropping things on us,” he said, referring to the blitz where Nazi Germany conducted bombing raids. “We spent a lot of our schooling in air-raid shelters,” he added. He said once lockdown was over last week he had been over the moon to see his wife again for the first time. He has been back as often as possible since, although that is currently twice per week as he looks forward to the rules loosening to allow daily visits once again. “We have not been separated for 62 years or thereabouts, I don’t want her to feel deserted,” Henry said.

MAR project gets $950,000 grant By Heather Chalmers
Left – A pilot MAR site at Lagmhor in the Hinds catchment.
heather.c@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury’s Managed Aquifer Recharge project has been given a significant funding boost with $950,000 from the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund. A pilot MAR site at Lagmhor in the Hinds catchment was established in 2016, where water is deliberately leaked into underground aquifers. This is already showing promising results by raising groundwater levels and diluting nitrate-nitrogen concentrations in groundwater. The funding will go towards completing feasibility and pilot work on the project to help protect and improve groundwater quality and supply in Mid Canterbury, Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones said. “Work on the Hekeao Hinds Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) pilot has been progressing for a number of years. Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) funding will enable the project to complete its feasibility investigations and finalise the business case,” Jones said. The pilot was evaluating the use of MAR to enhance groundwater quality for ecosystem health and safe drinking water, improving flows to spring-fed streams and rivers and replenishing declining groundwater levels. The use of MAR worldwide had been proven to be an effective water management tool which

enhanced the economic, environmental and cultural benefits of the communities in which they existed. “Ashburton is one of the most productive agricultural regions in New Zealand, with a wide variety of land uses and a large number of people employed in the agriculture and forestry sectors. A managed aquifer recharge will protect this existing economic activity and complement improvements on farms to significantly reduce
nutrient losses to groundwater,” Jones said. The funding will go to the Hekeao Hinds Water Enhancement Trust. Trust chairman Peter Lowe said it extended its thanks for the recognition and support, “Trustees would also like to recognise the community support that has initiated the trial and enabled this partnership with PGF.” The MAR trial was New Zealand’s largest groundwater rehabilitation project. A community-led project, it operated alongside strict planning rules regarding nutrient leaching from
land use activities. The MAR trial targeted nutrients already in the slow-moving groundwater system from historical land use activities, while planning rules targeted improvements in on-farm practices. “Together they provide a multi-pronged approach to drive improved environmental outcomes,” Lowe said. In the last year, the MAR project had increased its number of active recharge sites from one to 12 and increased the annual recharge volume from 1.85 million cubic metres to 6.15m cubic metres. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown
welcomed the funding and said the project was important for the prosperity of the district as well improving environmental outcomes by lowering nitrate levels in groundwater and replenishing shallow aquifers. MHV Water chief executive Melanie Brooks said that one of the challenges of the farmer-owned irrigation co-operative which had been delivering water to 58,000 hectares of the Hekeao Hinds Plains for the last 80 years, was the legacy from past practice. “In recent ageing analysis of our groundwater we had water dated to 154 years, so the changes we make today may take many years to be visible. “Being a partner in the Hekeao Hinds MAR trial is incredibly rewarding because it is the community all working together for common goals which includes dealing with some of those legacy issues. “I’m delighted that the PGF have recognised the importance of this project for Mid Canterbury and New Zealand as a whole,” Brooks said. In the last five years, there had been a material improvement in on-farm irrigation practices, uptake of technology, attitudes and engagement, she said.
Refugees will arrive, it’s just a question of when By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Their arrival might have been delayed, but the first refugees to begin a new life in Ashburton will still come, it’s just a question of when, says refugee settlement team leader Kathy Harrington-Watt. The first group of what was planned to be a total of 100 refugees over 12 months, was originally planned for August, but the Covid-19 pandemic and the
closure of New Zealand’s borders meant a hold has been put on New Zealand’s resettlement programme. Planning will continue for their arrival, but it now needs to be pretty open-ended, Harrington-Watt said. When New Zealand went into lockdown, 134 refugees were already at the Mangere Resettlement centre and with the move to Alert Level 2 , they are now being prepared to move into their
new communities. For Ashburton, the temporary stop to arrivals could see some changes in both numbers and country of origin, she said. Prior to lockdown, Harrington-Watt had begun the employment process for the team of social and community workers needed for the Ashburton resettlement programme. That had now been put on hold, but work on the programme would continue to en-
sure the district was ready when the green light was given. “We have been told, however, that they’re very invested in making sure refugees go to rural communities and because of Covid this may be even more likely because of employment opportunities. Now it’s just a matter of when and who that’s the question.” The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has no further refugee arrivals sched-
uled for the year to June 30. For the 2020/2021 year New Zealand’s refugee quota was planned to increase from 1000 per year to 1500 per year. Work is now under way with refugee agencies and the government on requirements that would allow the refugee resettlement programme to resume safely. This includes ensuring safe travel routes and appropriate health measures and controls.

says his focus is on doing the job that he was elected to do. “As we move from the immediate public health crisis to a longer term economic recovery it’s more important than ever that work continues,” he said. “In recent months I and my office here in Ashburton have fielded thousands of enquiries and requests for help. Serving this district is the reason I went into politics and I’m not about to be distracted from that.” He did not provide an answer when asked if he supports the current leadership team of Bridges and deputy leader Paula Bennett, or if he thought Bridges had the support to stay as leader. It follows Labour’s massive support (56.5 per cent) in this week’s political poll – and National’s decline (30.6 per cent) – on the back of the way the Government has handled

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon is keeping his head down and focusing on the job he has been elected to do and not on the rumour and speculation surrounding the future of Simon Bridges as the leader of the National Party. Bridges confirmed to media yesterday that he was expecting his leadership to be challenged at the party’s next caucus meeting on Tuesday, the earliest the two MPs that are allegedly planning to take him down can do so. Media are reporting those two MPs with their eyes on the top spot are Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller, and Auckland Central MP Nikki Kaye, who would be leader and deputy leader respectively. the Covid-19 crisis. Bridges would not confirm Muller or Kaye’s names, saying they deserved the dignity of an-
nouncing their own challenge. National MPs Judith Collins and Mark Mitchell – two earlier speculated challengers – told the
NZ Herald and Newstalk ZB they were not challenging. “Simon has shown enormous resilience. He’s got enormous self-belief and he’s a smart guy,” Mitchell said , who added he did not know if Bridges had the numbers. Bridges confirmed the leadership challenge but told ZB’s Mike Hosking that he was “very confident” he would win a vote on Tuesday. NZ First leader Winston Peters says Bridges won’t make it to the election. Bridges said the biggest issue New Zealand faced right now was its economic future. The leadership challenge was “a massive distraction” but he wanted to deal with it and move on and “win an election”. The challenge needed resolving so people could get back to talking about the future of the country, he said.

A tomato with a twist turned out like this,” David said. As it turns out the litchi tomato is not a fussy plant to grow. David said they put it in the ground and apart from watering it, they’ve left it alone. “I certainly didn’t trim the laterals of it, I didn’t want to tangle with it.” The tomatoes are apparently great in pies, salads and sauces although, as David pointed out, getting a feed off it requires a certain amount of commitment. “Spiky tomato gathering is not for the faint-hearted,” he said. The Hickmans have developed quite a liking for the unusual tomato plant, so plans are afoot to save some seeds and grow more next season.
David Hickman and his wife Carol have earned themselves a reputation in Allenton Bowling Club circles as growers of unusual vege plants. When their online search, at a Hawkes Bay nursery, for walking stick cabbage plants left them empty-handed, they added a litchi tomato plant to their virtual basket instead. A member of the nightshade family, as are all tomatoes, eggplants and potatoes, this unusual 2m plant has evolved into a bundle of leaves, small fruit and spikes, lots and lots of spikes. “When we first got it in November it was about 30cm tall and didn’t have any spikes on it at all. Bunnings talks ongoing By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Consultation with staff is still ongoing as Bunnings look to close seven stores across New Zealand, including in Ashburton. It was announced last Tuesday that the company had proposed to close seven stores across New Zealand. Bunnings New Zealand director Jacqui Coombes said that they remain in consultation with impacted store teams who can continue to provide submissions on the proposal. “We will then take the time to review and consider all feedback before making a final decision,” she said. Depending on the outcome of the consultation period, stores would close by the end of June. Stores earmarked for closure include the Ashburton warehouse, the Hornby and Hastings trade centres and four smaller format stores in Cambridge, Rangiora, Te Awamutu and Putaruru. Currently the Bunnings Ashburton store has 30 staff, 15 who are full-time, nine part-time and six casual. It is anticipated staff will be required to work for a further four to six weeks following closure while the store is de-merchandised, but this will be confirmed at a later date.

Bunnings say they believe that approximately two-thirds of staff could be re-deployed to other locations, with other full-time and part-time staff being offered redundancy packages. Coombes said at the time of the announcement that their priority is the welfare of the 145 affected team members across the seven stores. Other large New Zealand retailers are starting to show the struggles of the economic im-
pact from Covid-19. Furniture and electronics retailer Smiths City has entered an agreement to be sold for $60 million to Polar Capital. In a market update earlier, the NZX-listed company said both its retail and finance operations would be sold to the investment company owned by Colin Neal, founder of refrigerated logistics company Big Chill. As part of the acquisition, at least seven of Smiths City 29
stores will close, following a strategic review. The final number of stores to be sold is dependent on lease transfers and new lease terms being agreed for those transferring stores, the company said. Smiths City would not disclose which stores will close. The Warehouse has also announced it plans to close one store in Birkenhead, Auckland at the conclusion of its lease at the end of July.
Lions clubs adapt at Alert Level 2 By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
The shift to Level 2 has meant many people and groups have been able to gather together once again, including the boards of many of the district’s Lions clubs. With gatherings limited to a maximum of 10 and other restrictions of place, members of the Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club improvised for their board meeting on May 15, meeting in president Noel Lowe’s car shed, with the cars moved out, instead replaced
by tables and chairs. In his bulletin report, Lowe said the club has missed three club meetings, the 202J District Convention in Mosgiel, and a two-day trip to Cromwell. “Worst of all was missing the personal fellowship and camaraderie of members,” he said. “Secretary Lion Dave has done a wonderful job keeping us informed with his humorous emails and Lions news each morning.” Two new members were able to be inducted into the club during
lockdown. “Lion John Ramsay, with his wife Gail, was sponsored by Lion Jim Martin on a telephone conference call where they took their oaths of allegiance to Lions International,” Lowe said. “Lion Joe Butchard as sponsor arranged a computer Zoom call where I inducted and welcomed Lion Malcolm McCormick and Pam into our club. These are special Lions inducted under special circumstances into our unique Lions Club.”
The club’s charitable trust is set to meet next week to decide who they will donate to from their fundraising efforts, with a list of recommendations already compiled. “As there are a lot of people out of jobs we may have to look at really needy causes in our local community,” he said. “We will be mindful our fundraising capacity will not be as good next year as we have been accustomed over the previous years.”
Scania setting up shop in Ashburton ACL Smallbone will now service the South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury regions for Scania – operating from two main locations, Timaru and Ashburton, including a brand new workshop being built in Ashburton. Last year Smallbone Timaru – an existing Scania service dealer – merged with Ashburton contracting business, ACL, with a view to expansion. ACL Smallbone’s new partnership with Scania adds huge value to the brand they say, which will establish a mega site for commercial vehicles in the region. Scania New Zealand managing director, Mattias Lundholm, says this expansion demon-
Scania NZ managing director Mattias Lundholm strates their commitment to provide a premium service offering for their customers. “As our network of service
dealers grows, Scania are well equipped to deliver customers more convenience than ever before. The scale of service offered by the ACL Smallbone merger represented an ideal acquisition to Scania’s network in a key growth region of the country,” he said. The partnership’s strategic appeal was immediately apparent to Scania New Zealand’s network director, Colin Bowden. “ACL Smallbone was a perfect fit for our network from our first discussion. “Their commitment to a customer-focused dealership was clearly evident, and I know our customers will be impressed as they ramp up their new premis-
es over the next few months,” he said. The dealership’s new workshop in Ashburton is under construction, despite challenges presented with the lockdown, and it is expected to be open in July. ACL Smallbone CEO, Gary Casey, says he is delighted to have partnered with an industry leader like Scania. “Scania’s standing within the New Zealand trucking industry as well as its expanding customer base will benefit all the parties involved in this exciting new venture – most of all the truckies within the South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury regions,” he said.
In brief Investigation ongoing Environment Canterbury does not yet know what killed hundreds of fish at Mt Somers, due to Covid-19 delays. Spokesperson Janine Holland said ECan was grateful to the Mt Somers community for the patience they had shown while the regional council waited for test results to become available. “Work to determine the exact cause of the incident has been delayed as laboratories are prioritising Covid-19 testing, so we cannot yet comment on any possible followup action,” Holland said. Hundreds of fish were all of a sudden found dead and floating in the Mt Somers village stockwater race in early March. Holland said further water testing at the area had confirmed that the waterway was now safe for stockwater consumption. Tests of soil adjacent to the race, and further monitoring of the race water, were planned to ensure water quality.
Fourth man charged Police running Operation Quattro announced a fourth man has been arrested in connection to the death of Bao Chang Wang and charged with being an accessory after the fact. A 37-year-old man is the second individual to be charged as an accessory. The arrest comes a day after two men were charged with the murder of Bao Chang Wang, also known as Ricky. A tipoff in March led police to a grisly discovery of human remains buried on the side of Rangipo Intake Road, which is off the Desert Road – NZME near Tongariro.
AirNZ sheds jobs More than 1300 cabin crew will lose their jobs at Air New Zealand with one worker saying it was ‘’crushing’’. Out of 1600 long and mid-haul crew, 950 will lose their jobs. For domestic crew, 300 workers will be made redundant across Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Regional airlines are also affected, with a combined loss of 97 jobs between Air Nelson and Mt Cook Airline, says E tū the union covering cabin crew. – NZME
Emergency caucus National is considering holding an emergency caucus meeting tomorrow to resolve the leadership issue, despite no confirmation from National’s Todd Muller that he intends to challenge Simon Bridges. It is understood Bridges is keen to put the matter to rest before the end of the week, and consideration is being given to mustering MPs for an emergency caucus meeting tomorrow rather than waiting until Tuesday. – NZME
Covid-19 app Director general of health Ashley Bloomfield is encouraging Kiwis to download the NZ Covid Tracer app. “The app is another tool in our toolbox [to contact trace].” The app has the function to scan QR codes at participating businesses so users can keep a digital log of their movements without needing to handover their personal details to businesses. The app helps “build a picture” of where you’ve been if you’re infected with Covid-19, 92,000 people have downloaded the app. Issues with the app are being worked through, he said. – NZME
Living and working at Alert Level 2 Keep track
All New Zealanders need to keep a record of the places they visit. This helps people and businesses to be reached quickly if there is risk of exposure to a known case of the virus. All businesses and organisations (except retailers) must therefore keep a customer log, including date, time, name, email, address and phone number. Businesses, including retailers, also need to keep a record of their employees and any visitors, like suppliers, to their premises. Get the app
Bars and restaurants
Individuals should record their own movement by keeping a daily diary of where you went and when you went there.
You can now enjoy your local bars as well as restaurants. They will, however, be operating in a slightly different way.
The Ministry of Health has launched an app to help you do this digitally, called NZ COVID Tracer. The app lets you scan posters at participating outlets, so you can keep track of where you have been.
In all bars and restaurants, you will need to stay seated at all times (except for when you are paying).
You can find this app online at tracing.covid.govt.nz
Businesses can help their customers All New Zealand businesses can help their customers to keep this ‘digital diary’ by: 1. Downloading a special poster, with a QR code that is unique to your business, AND
Your group will be separated from others and can be no larger than 10 people. You will also have a single server for each table. No premises can have more than 100 people. So it’s a good idea to book ahead, as many eateries will have reduced capacity. Remember to make as much space around you as possible while queuing. And don’t forget to be patient with staff as we all adjust to these new rules.
2. Displaying it somewhere prominent on your premises. Get your business’ poster at: covid19.govt.nz/qrposter
Keep on playing it safe Alert Level 2 gives us all more freedom, but also more responsibility. Let’s do this right, and lock in the gains we have already made.

Farmers under active surveillance for mycoplasma bovis are finding good support from the Farmer Assistance Programme.
Spotlight on farm biosecurity Lifestyle block owners will be surveyed to find out their attitudes and behaviours regarding on-farm biosecurity as part of the mycoplasma bovis programme’s efforts to eradicate the disease from New Zealand. Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research has been appointed to undertake the survey, which will build on data collected in its 2019 survey of rural decision-makers. “Like commercial farmers, lifestyle block
owners have an important role to play in accelerating the eradication and supporting ongoing absence of the cattle disease from New Zealand,” John Roche, chairman of the M. bovis strategic science group and the chief science adviser for the Ministry for Primary Industries, said. While there were 140,000 to 175,000 lifestyle block owners in New Zealand, they had been identified as a group about

which there was little data regarding their on-farm biosecurity practices. “These survey results will help us understand how we can best engage this group in the M. bovis eradication effort. It will provide useful data for the programme as it moves towards confirming absence of disease,” Roche said. Researchers will survey a sample of lifestyle block owners on their biosecurity practice and attitudes, including questions about animal ownership and awareness of, and compliance with, legal obligations under the NAIT and Biosecurity Acts. Manaaki Whenua will run the voluntary electronic survey in June to best fit with the farming calendar. The results were expected to be available in September. As at May 15, 249 properties nationally had been confirmed with M. bovis, of which 19 remained active and needed to complete a destocking and cleaning process. Almost 155,000 animals have been culled. To date, $278.8 million had been spent on operational costs since the start of the eradication response in July, 2017. In addition, $149.3m had been paid in compensation to farmers. A new science project was also under way aimed at making it easier to detect the cattle disease.
New Zealand-based biotechnology company Pictor has been appointed to undertake research to enhance the antibody (ELISA) detection method, one of two tests used to detect M. bovis in cattle. “The programme’s testing regime is really good for this stage of the eradication programme, but, in 12-18 months, as the prevalence of the disease in the cattle population gets lower and lower, the ability to detect it will get harder and harder. The development of a more sensitive test has the potential to optimise future testing,” Roche said. “To provide confidence New Zealand is free of M. bovis, background surveillance will continue for some years after the current delimiting stage of the eradication, which is focused on eliminating M. bovis.” Roche said science and better diagnostics, in particular, would play a critical role in accelerating the eradication of M. bovis from New Zealand and in preventing another incursion. The Pictor project was expected to take 14 months to complete and was the first of several diagnostic projects in the research pipeline. The M. bovis programme had allocated up to $30m for M. bovis research projects to help accelerate eradication of the disease from New Zealand.

A return to the local watering hole
T
oday one of life’s greatest pastimes will be allowed back in the door. Hearty souls will tell you that all of life’s problems are solved over a bar leaner with a jug of cold beer in hand, so on that basis New Zealand’s current situation and how we are going to get through the next few years in the wake of Covid-19 should be sorted out by Friday lunchtime. They’ll discuss everything from politics to club rugby and everything in between. Most will have different opinions to those sitting around them, but each will be heard on its own merits and given the appropriate due consideration before a general consensus is reached. If you’re ever in the pub you’ll know exactly who these people are. They are the ones who look more at home, beer in one hand while the other rests on a hip, than what they do in their own lounge chair. Sure, it’s related to alcohol and society these days tells us that it’s a scourge on society and should never be encouraged – but the beer, in this instance, is more just a tool of the trade than it is a form of entertainment. It’s a pastime that’s rolled through generations and will continue to be passed on for many to come. Basically, it’s a way of Kiwi life for so many people. In our community, it’s more so for the older members. Their pilgrimage is a daily highlight. A chance to catch up with their mates, spend some time catching up and discussing all the topics at hand. A few, who I’ve spoken to over the past couple of months have really missed that and will no doubt be some of the first at the door when they open up this afternoon. Not for the chance to wrap a cold one around their lips, but more for the camaraderie that comes with a visit to the local watering hole and the sense of community that comes along with it.

Rebuilding together N
ew Zealanders work best when we work together, and over the last few months, that’s exactly what I’ve seen right across the country. We united as a team of five million to fight Covid-19. We went hard and early to break the chain of transmission and stop the virus in its tracks. We stayed home and we saved lives. And, thanks to all of you, so far it’s working. Now, as we continue to play it safe to stop another outbreak, it’s time for us to rebuild and recover together. The global economic shock of Covid-19 presents challenges not seen in New Zealand since the Great Depression, but there is a clear path through. To get our economy moving, we know our focus needs to be on jobs. That’s why, from the very beginning, our economic response has prioritised protecting jobs and keeping businesses afloat. From the wage subsidy scheme to interest-free loans for small

businesses, we moved quickly to get money out the door to support workers and businesses. Now, we’re taking the next steps in our plan with Budget 2020: Rebuilding Together. This year’s Budget is all about getting New Zealand moving again. The centrepiece is our $50 billion Covid Rebuild and Recovery Fund, which will create jobs, get business moving and support New Zealanders. The fund includes a targeted extension to the wage subsidy to keep the most affected Kiwis in work. Right here in Mid Canterbury this will be especially welcome as we rebuild and recover. Our region, with its rural back-
bone, is in a good spot for recovery, but this does not mean that we don’t need support and investment. I am hopeful that we will see a good chunk of investment here from Budget 2020’s Shovel Ready Infrastructure Programme, and am supporting the proposals that the Ashburton District Council have put forward. The Budget also includes initiatives to create new jobs, train people to have the skills they need for the jobs we have, and support people to get into work. ■■FLETCHER BUILDING
Business reset: 1500 jobs to go By Anne Gibson New Zealand’s biggest builder says it plans to lay off around 1000 staff in New Zealand, equating to around 10 per cent of its workforce, and has slashed capital expenditure in response to Covid-19. Flecther Building announced the move yesterday while also updating the market on its outlook for activity, including an expected 30 per cent drop in residential building consents. Shares in the manufacturer, builder and distributor were trading around $3.34, down 6c yesterday but a big drop from the $5.46 the company was trading at on the NZX last May. Chief executive Ross Taylor said the lay-offs were about resetting the business for the future. “While we looked at all parts of our business to remove costs, regrettably we believe we will not be able to support the same number of people. We have to make some very difficult decisions which include looking at reducing the
Chief executive Ross Taylor number of people we employ by approximately 10 per cent. This will equate to around 1000 positions across New Zealand,” he said in a statement to the NZX.

The business has not specified which areas of the business or which sectors the job losses are in. Around 500 Australian jobs are
also on the line. “In Australia we are undertaking a comprehensive review of our operations and expect this would result in a workforce reduction in the order of 500. “I acknowledge this news will be hard to hear and that this is an unsettling time for all involved. Moving ahead as proposed would mean losing talented and hard-working people from Fletcher Building. “Any of our people affected will have made a difference to our company, their teammates and our customers. These decisions are not a reflection of their value or contribution,” Taylor said. The Penrose-headquartered business is beginning consultation with staff and unions this week, he said. A search yesterday of the Government’s wage subsidy scheme showed that by Monday this week, Fletcher Building Shared Services had received $67.6m for 9694 paid employees. “In New Zealand, we will honour our obligations under
the Government wage subsidy scheme by retaining our people through the 12-week subsidy period ending June 26. We are committed to supporting our people as they leave us and will endeavour to do what we can to help them secure their next opportunity,” he said. Every permanent employee leaving would be paid their redundancy entitlement or four weeks’ base salary, whichever is higher, “to recognise and support our people given the exceptional circumstances. We will also be providing a comprehensive range of outplacement and other support services.” The company also updated the market on its outlook, saying at the time of the Level 4 lockdown New Zealand residential consents were tracking at all-time highs of around 37,000 per annum. “As we look ahead, our base case estimate for residential consents in New Zealand is that they will drop by around 30 per cent to about 25,000 in the year to June 2021.”
Consumers may emerge with curtailed spending habits By Dan Brunskill business
Desk
Spending has lifted significantly as New Zealand has emerged from national lockdown but an Otago University professor warns any splurge won’t last. Consumer behaviour researcher Leah Watkins, an associate professor in the marketing department of the university’s school of business, said increased activity during the first days of reopening would probably be shortlived as the lockdown had inspired people to tighten their belts. People would have assessed what their finances looked like when discretionary spending was saved, and that was likely to amplify trends toward less reliance on debt, shopping locally and ethically, and trimming down on some types of spending. “It is possible that there will be a real splurge in these initial weeks, but my feeling is people are going to reassess and, as a general rule, be a little more frugal,” she said. Last week, Australasian customer research agency Perceptive said about half of New Zealanders were planning to reduce their spending and shop more locally. Eftpos provider Paymark facilitates about 70 per cent of the country’s electronic card transactions. It said that in the week ended May 17, retail spending through its machines was down about 11 per cent from a year earlier. That is compared to Level 4 when total spending fell by half. Excluding supermarkets, liquor outlets and pharmacies, retailing
spending fell close to 90 per cent during the higher level of lockdown. As Kiwi consumers have reemerged in Level 2 since April 13, some retailers have seen a significant splurge in spending. A quarter of retailers, including takeaway food, liquor stores, garden supplies and appliance stores, booked sales during the first four days of Level 2 restrictions that were 30 per cent higher than the same time last year. Under Level 3, their sales had been down about 21 per cent. But clothing stores, hospitality, sports equipment and book shops are all still experiencing reduced demand. While individual results within each category vary, Paymark said the Level 2 sales of a group representing about 28 per cent of all retail spending was on average 7 per cent lower than the same time last year. However, this group had sales reduced between 60 to 90 per cent during Level 3.
The remaining half of retail spending through Paymark is made up of supermarkets and dairies, which have seen increased spending in all alert levels, and petrol stations, which have seen lower spending throughout. Otago University’s Watkins said surveys for several years had shown a trend toward reducing spending on credit and a preference for more socially conscious options. The lockdown experience would tend to reinforce that. “We’ve all been a little bit uncomfortably aware of the excesses of our own consumption and this has crystalised that we need to reduce consumption overall and think more carefully about what we are consuming,” she said. “For a good proportion of people these were changes they had been looking to make and this just catalysed attitudes that were already there.”

■■OPINION
Probing the mentality of ‘winning’ Adam Burns
SPORTS REPORTER
I
t was the gift that kept on giving. And then it was over. The final two episodes of the 10-part Netflix docu-series chronicling the Chicago Bulls’ dynasty in the 1990s were simulcast this week and it was hard not to feel some sense of sentimentality at the end of it. In other words, I did not want it to end. Nit-picky NBA purists may quibble on a few things but these productions are seldom perfect. Others may view it as a cynical money-making venture masquerading as an expose into one of the greatest NBA sides of all time and its unparalleled main drawcard. The documentary offered the sporting pick-me-up during lockdown and it was sad to bid it farewell on Monday. The storylines, the forthright perspectives, the nostalgia, all of these elements helped it transcend both the core-NBA and sport audiences, attesting to the notion that MJ remained a bankable cultural force, more than 20 years after the fact. The final two episodes coloured in the remaining parts of the overall picture – the obstacles the Bulls faced during consecutive NBA finals’ showdowns with a plucky Utah Jazz outfit, being taken to the brink by Reggie Miller and the Indiana Pacers in the 1998 Eastern Conference finals, the heroics of Steve Kerr, and final reflections as the crux of the Bulls side are split by management following their sixth championship triumph. The bittersweet parting and Jordan’s immortal game six dag-
Michael Jordan delivering the winning three-pointer in the NBA final against the Utah Jazz back in 1998. ger shot at Salt Lake City to seal a sixth title and second threepeat was the exclamation mark of a compelling tale. In New Zealand, it remained one of the most watched things on Netflix over the past five weeks. Appraising the key ethos which drove a figure like Michael Jordan to supreme heights is potentially a curious one for Kiwis. Jordan’s win-at-all-costs M.O. was legible from the outset and as the series progressed, you discovered just how alienating a presence he could be around his team-mates and just how antagonistic he was in the heat of battle for his rivals. You understand the mindset, but does it mean it is right? Rightly or wrongly, he paid the
price for his success both in the celebrity status it brought him and the way he was perceived by those who went to work with him every day. In a way, this approach is at odds with our low-key sensibilities as Kiwis, where the natural temperament of our elite athletes is one of modesty and tact (at least publicly). We are more comfortable as the battling underdogs – on paper we should probably identify more with the hustle of Utah stars John Stockton and Karl Malone as opposed to the cocksure swagger of Jordan. Yet looking from the outside in, unable to look away from the MJ saga, we are clearly fascinated with greatness. An interesting counter-point to that is how we critique our
national rugby team. The All Blacks have maintained a winning percentage of more than 77 per cent across 116 years of test rugby, won three Rugby World Cups and become one of our most important global brands. However, we are never satisfied as a rugby public – those militant expectations have contributed significantly to a legacy of ‘winning’. Earlier this year, Sport New Zealand launched a public awareness campaign where a retread of our “attitudes and behaviours” at community level was identified as a key blueprint in solving major problems at the grassroots level including diminishing participation numbers. “Encouraging young people to
play multiple sports rather than specialising early, and an emphasis on fun and development over winning, also continue to be driven by Sport New Zealand and the five sports.” I wholeheartedly agree with this objective, but it also needs to be balanced with youngsters realising their potential as they get older and celebrating success stories. Of course, the world has changed since then and getting back out onto the parks, courts and turfs will be equivalent to a championship win in this climate. At least we have had The Last Dance to not only whet the sporting appetite, but to inspire and trigger the possibilities – whether you agree with Jordan or not.

NZ Cricket respond to bombshell Williamson claim NZME New Zealand Cricket has rubbished claims that Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson’s test captaincy is under threat. Concerns over Williamson’s captaincy arose earlier this year after the Black Caps’ disastrous test tour of Australia, where New Zealand were swept 3-0, raising questions about whether the Black Caps skipper was carrying too onerous a workload across all three formats. According to The Crowd Goes Wild broadcaster James McOnie, coach Gary Stead prefers Tom Latham as test captain instead, and is planning a change. “Coup alert! Kane Williamson’s test captaincy is under threat,” McOnie tweeted. “Apparently coach Gary Stead favours
fellow Cantabrian Tom Latham as skipper. It’d be easier on the ego to take the T20 job from Kane, to ease his workload, but that’s not the preferred plan.” However, NZ Cricket rejected suggestions of the captaincy coup. “There’s absolutely no truth to any suggestion Kane’s captaincy is under threat,” a team spokesman told Newshub. Shortly after the end of the Black Caps’ humbling in Australia this year, Williamson brushed aside concerns about his leadership, explaining that his love for the job is still inctact. “I do feel fortunate to be leading such a great group of guys that share a similar passion, which is to keep moving this team forward,” Williamson said. “It is enjoyable and you do learn so
much about yourself and with your team. Without a doubt there are a number of challenges which come throughout, and you’re forever dealing with those challenges. It’s part and parcel of the job but for me the focus is very much to continue to try and grow and help move the team in the right direction.” He did, however, acknowledge that he would be open to other options if it would benefit the team. “For me it’s always been about what’s best for the team. So if those discussions are to eventuate and collectively there’s a thought that it would be best for the team, then my stance is whatever is right and fits the group. “I’m always open to whatever is going to help move the team in those directions.”

■■BLOODSTOCK SALES
Positive outlook for trade NZ Racing Desk Despite the uncertain economic climate as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, New Zealand bloodstock agent Stuart Hale is remaining optimistic about the future. While many in the racing industry couldn’t do much more than go for a walk and watch television during lockdown, Hale was kept busy and even traded a couple of horses during that period. “It’s been pretty good,” he said. “I have been fairly busy. I am hearing from clients I haven’t heard from in a few years, which is good. “I have sold a couple of horses in Level 4 to Hong Kong. I think it is mainly because Hong Kong buyers and owners can’t travel, so the bloodstock agents are made a lot more use of. “They were a couple of PPG’s (Private Purchase Griffins) and I just sold another one on Tuesday, a No Nay Never two-year-old of Michael Pitman’s called No Never No More. “He is a trial winner. He is a beautiful moving horse and is a strong, precocious type. That’s what the owner wanted.” Hale’s main clients are Hong Kong-based and he said demand is still strong despite the Asian nation going through a challenging time of late. “I have had a few clients whose budgets have been affected,” he said. “Some of my best clients have been affected because they are in the tourist, retail, and hospitality trade in Hong Kong.

Stuart Hale “That was firstly affected by the riots. They were hit hard by them. They even stopped a couple of meetings at Happy Valley. “The virus then struck, so they got a double whammy. Their businesses just came to a stop. It’s going to be a while before it starts to pick up, but the budgets of a lot of the buyers now is a lot lower. They are looking for a cheaper horse. “A lot of the Hong Kong owners want to use their permits because they feel if they throw
their permits in, they may not be able to get a ballot again for a couple of years. So they would rather take the cheaper option to retain their permit.” The Hong Kong Jockey Club offers 150 Private Purchase Permits (Previously Raced Horses) and 440 Private Purchase Griffin Permits (Unraced but can have had a trial) every year. Demand for permits is very high, so permit holders will endeavour to utilise their permits. Hale expects demand for racing stock to improve over the coming months, but he admitted to being worried about New Zealand’s ability to supply that demand. “I think it (demand) is going to be very good, especially with the climate of New Zealand racing at present,” he said. “My problem is going to be a lack of New Zealand product, with less racing. “Not all permits are for unraced horses. I am worried about that, so that’s why I am going to be searching Australia and Europe as well.” But Hale said the New Zealand-bred has a strong reputation in Hong Kong and the Island nation’s product would continue to be in high demand in the Asian racing jurisdiction. “New Zealand horses have always been very popular,” he said. “Mainly because we have had a lot of Hong Kong Horse of the Years, along with the durability of the New Zealand horse as opposed to the European horse.”
Peter Jensen
Jensen quits The boss of Harness Racing New Zealand says his shock decision to resign has nothing to do with the difficult times facing the racing industry. Out-going chief executive Peter Jensen says it is simply for his own benefit. Jensen resigned yesterday and will leave HRNZ’s headquarters in Christchurch on Friday, saying his move is one toward semi-retirement. “I have underlying health issues and realise these have got to the point where I cannot give 100 per cent to HRNZ at a time when it requires 150 per cent,” says Jensen. “I know the timing is far from ideal, but I also understand that I am not able to give the organisation the energy and guidance that it requires at this time, hence my decision to retire and concentrate on my health.”

NZME The New Zealand Warriors have suffered a third injury in four days as preparation for the re-started NRL season takes another hit. Utility back Adam Keighran has joined the growing injury list after suffering a knee injury in a training session in Tamworth on Monday night. Prop Leeson Ah Mau (pectoral muscle) and lock Jazz Tevaga (knee) have already suffered longterm injury blows in Tamworth after the club had already lost prop Bunty Afoa and hooker Jackson Frei to injuries early in the year. Keighran is expected to have surgery this week and faces an extended period on the sideline, the club says. The 2019 rookie made his seventh NRL appearance replacing an unavailable Peta Hiku in the centres in the second-round clash against Canberra before the 2020 season was suspended. It leaves the Warriors in a precarious position in terms of player stocks as they near the end of their quarantine time in Tamworth before next Saturday’s game against the Dragons. Cronulla Sharks great Paul Gallen, who retired last year, has even hinted he’d be up to running out for the Warriors if they needed his help. Warriors CEO Cameron George said other NRL clubs had offered players on loan but it was brushed back by the competition. That leaves retired players as the best option if the Warriors needed any help.

Birthday Greetings
Adam Keighran in action during round two. Gallen, who retired last season after playing 348 games for the Sharks, said he would consider putting on the Warriors jersey. “The Warriors have done such an amazing job to get over here to Australia, so many sacrifices to get the game going again, you’d like to think we could help them out as much as possible,” Gallen told 2GB on Tuesday. “I tell you what, we’ve got until June 30 and I heard Billy Slater say he’d come back and play, Sam Thaiday today said he’d come back and play. “I reckon between the three of us you’d get 10 or 15 games out, so why not, give me a call. “The sacrifices they made, I would consider it.”
George said discussions will continue with the NRL about the possibility of loaning a player. “We’ve been declined already from the NRL for loan players. So were going to have a second discussion with them,” George said. “We’ve got significant injuries in one particular part of our squad, in key positions. So to simply say ‘You’ve still got 28 players’, well they all can’t play front row. “So we need to go back to the drawing table with the NRL and give them a very clear understanding of who we have and what we don’t have available, particularly in the middle.” An NRL spokesman said that player loans were “against the rules of the competition”

Inglis comes out of retirement Thirteen months after retiring from the NRL, rugby league phenom Greg Inglis has confirmed he will join the English Super League in 2021. The Warrington Wolves revealed Inglis had come out of retirement and signed with the club on a oneyear contract. He will join former NRL stars Israel Folau and Sonny Bill Williams in the English competition. “I can’t wait to get over there and play for a club that has so much rich heritage. I’ve seen the success the team have had in the Challenge Cup and I want to help the team to deliver more glory,” the 33-yearold Inglis said in a statement. “I’ve played over in England many times in representative footy and love how passionate and vocal the supporters are. “To get the opportunity to live in the UK, to play for such a powerhouse club that I believe is on the rise is something I’m looking forward to and hopefully I can add

value to the team.” Warrington Wolves CEO Karl Fitzpatrick said the signing was a “historical moment” for the club. “This signing is a gift to every one of our fantastic members and partners who are currently experiencing difficult times,” Fitzpatrick said. “We wanted to give everyone something to look forward to and to say thank you for their extraordinary loyalty. With this in mind we were extra motivated to get this deal completed. “Greg is considered to be one of the greatest Rugby League players of the modern era. To see him pull on the primrose and blue will be a historical moment in Warrington Wolves and Super League’s timeline.” Head Coach Steve Price believed Inglis would have a “positive impact” on the Warrington Wolves, who are yet to win a Super League title despite reaching the final on four occasions.
“Greg is a world-class athlete and has received the highest honours within our game,” Price said. “Having had 12 months out of the sport he has had time to refresh both mentally and physically, and he is focused on having a positive influence on Warrington Wolves. “I’m looking forward to working with him on a professional and personal level, and I’m excited to welcome him into our group.” Inglis announced his retirement from the NRL in April 2019 after a series of injury concerns. Although he had 18 months remaining on his contract with the Rabbitohs, Inglis was paid out in full by the club despite not being medically retired. “I just think it’s time and I think it’s the right decision for myself. I’ve come to terms with it,” Inglis said last year. “There has been a lot of speculation but as of today it’s official. There are no regrets.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): What you do to keep your core self strong – be it exercise, meditation, spiritual work or other practices – is important to keep up with no matter what else is going on in the world. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): If you wait until you are stirred to do a thing, it will be too late. To take advantage of a brief window of opportunity, you’ll have to move before you are ready and act before you are sure. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Accept your fixed traits, and learn to highlight them, or work around them as needed. Every personality trait has within it the potential to be a worst or best quality and will be both, depending on when you look. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Sometimes you doubt the malleability of identity. But when you think about how different you were 10 years ago, it’s clear that change is inevitable and never stops. Your ability to prioritise and categorise will help you get a bigger prize. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): People sometimes ask questions as a means of control. You’ll love the conversation partner who asks out of sheer curiosity. You’ll have splendid exchanges today. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Easter is over, but it’s never too late to hide treats for people to discover for a moment of delight. A Post-it note on the mirror, a rock painted with a smile, a website link that leads to a joke... sweet treasures! SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You are capable of successfully making commitments you have never made before. So don’t be scared off by a prospect because it’s new. Say yes, and get the experience. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You can’t become who you want to be by doing the same activities. You’ll change it up and be pleasantly surprised by what you learn about yourself. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Intimacy is a function of being able to reciprocally share vulnerabilities with people who accept those weaknesses. If only the powerful parts are shared, it is impossible to be truly connected. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): It’s all falling into place for you. Community football in Mid Canterbury could be back in just over three weeks’ time. Mid Canterbury Football committee chairman Neil Simons announced local league
football was set to kick off on June 13. “Yes, that’s right, we are planning to start our local season on Saturday June 13, 2020 assuming NZ continues to eliminate Covid-19,” he said, on the Mid Canterbury United Football
Club Facebook page this week. Teams across several grades from five-aside first kicks (ages 4-6) to nine-aside premiership league grade (ages 13-14) were being urged to enter by June 6. All games will be played at the Ashburton Domain.
The first and fun kicks seasons will run until August 15 while the super, championship and premiership leagues will run until September 19. All grades will break in July for the Term 2 school holidays. Mainland Football confirmed
at the weekend it was aiming for a June 6 kick-off for senior football, however it was dependent on the Government’s Alert Level 2 review announcement on Monday. Team entries can be submitted to admin@mcfootball.co.nz
