Hayshed blaze requires massive effort by firefighters BY KATIE TODD

KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

It took a dawn to dusk effort for Ashburton volunteer firefighters to put out a blaze in a hayshed on Thursday. A number of hay bales caught ablaze shortly before 5am on a property on Buckleys Road in Wakanui, and took nearly 17 hours to tackle. Ashburton Fire and Emergency Chief Officer Alan Burgess said the blaze appeared to have begun simply due to some of the hay bales overheating – and quickly grew into a sizeable operation. Fire appliances from Ashburton, Rakaia, Pendarves, Willowby and Lauriston converged at the scene, and had to tap into farm irrigation for adequate water supply. Burgess said the shed was left destroyed. “Because the shed was made of a metal frame the metal has just become distorted,” he said. “It will have to be cleared off.” During the day, volunteer firefighters received a visit from the Salvation Army, who handed out food and ensured the team were adequately hydrated. Tarbotton Contracting also lent a helping hand – supplying heavy machinery to run over the hay bales and assist in the dampening down process. It was after 10pm on Thursday night when the last trucks returned to the station after putting out the blaze. M. bovis results ‘inconclusive’ BY LINDA CLARKE

LINDA.C@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Mid Canterbury’s farming community remains on high alert for the cattle disease mycoplasma bovis, despite a negative test from an Ashburton dairy farm. Authorities will continue to test for the bacteria, which is extremely difficult to detect, and ramp up milk testing on all dairy farms. The Ashburton farm is under a restricted place notice or quarantine and neighbours have been alerted. M. bovis would have huge financial repercussions on New Zealand’s dairy industry if it becomes established and MPI is staging its biggest incursion response ever to eradicate it. “One negative does not mean it is okay,” DairyNZ’s Chris Morley told about 150 people who turned up to a public meeting in Ashbur-

ton on Thursday night to find out more about the disease, first diagnosed on an Oamaru farm owned by the Van Leeuwen Dairy Group earlier this year. The Ashburton property under suspicion has links to the dairy group through cattle movements. Morley said M. bovis was tricky to find and could be dormant for weeks or months. “Some of the Van Leeuwen farms were caught at their third and fourth test. The short answer as of today is the test results are inconclusive, not positive, but it is not a get out of jail card yet.” The Ashburton meeting drew many working in the district’s dairy sector, as well as Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel and Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon. Vetlife Ashburton hosted the evening on the back of requests for information following an an-

nouncement by MPI that an Ashburton property was strongly suspected of having the disease. Morven farmers and veterinarian Merlyn Hay, who have been living, breathing and farming alongside M. bovis in South Canterbury since July, shared what they had learned about how the bacteria spread and what could be done to stop it. South Canterbury Rural Support Trust’s Sarah Barr said the Ashburton farmer had been proactive in communicating with neighbours; the experience was harrowing and stressful for the family, as it had been for those in Morven. She said farmers here should not be part of the rumour mill but learn about the disease and what they could do to protect themselves. M. bovis causes serious and painful mastitis and arthritis in

cattle, and does not respond to antibiotics. Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers’ vice-president David Clark said there was concern in the district, which is one of the highest milk production areas per cow in New Zealand. Federated Farmers was working to have MPI in Mid Canterbury in the new year to expand on the situation and how they were managing it. He said the Ashburton farming family was under stress and it was appropriate they remain anonymous. “But if you have not been spoken to by him then you are not farming next door to him.” Until July, New Zealand was one of only a few countries to be free of M. bovis. Milk testing shows it is not widespread and authorities are trying to eradicate it.

If established, it could stop sharemilkers moving from farm to farm with their cows, or grazing off-farm. It also affects transport operators, stock agents and could spell the end of communal saleyards like Temuka. Farmers are being encouraged to implement biosecurity plans for their properties, including boundary fences to prevent nose-to-nose contact and making sure vehicles, equipment and protective clothing that have been on other farms are cleaned and disinfected before coming on to their properties. These biosecurity precautions would prevent the spread of not only M. bovis, but also salmonella, BVD, rotavirus and pinkeye. Farmers were also encouraged to update their NAIT records as authorities trace cattle movements from known infected properties.

Generous donation by Mitre 10 to Birthright BY KATIE TODD

KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Mitre 10 is making a generous donation to Ashburton’s children this Christmas – so generous, it requires a forklift for transport. A crate full of children’s toys – from pool toys to slides to backyard cricket sets, has been gifted to Birthright Ashburton for distribution to deserving families. All Mitre 10 stores owned by Simon Lye – that is, the Ashburton, Timaru and Oamaru branches, make a donation each year to a charity of their choice “We’ve got a bit of an affinity in wanting to do something nice,” said Mitre 10 Ashburton Operations Manager Michelle Brown. “In Ashburton there are families that are in need, sometimes in crisis, and if there’s anything we can do to help then we will do it,” she said. Birthright helps single parent families, and field officer Christine Muff said it was “amazing” to receive the help from Mitre 10. “A lot of children will have only received secondhand presents so to get something new will mean a lot,” she said. “We’re very lucky.” She said it’s also an opportunity to “give back” to a community which has shown its generous spirit to her. As Ashburton’s biggest employer, Muff said many Mitre 10 staff know the reality of raising a family themselves. ■ METHVEN SUMMER SCHOOL

Summer school hits the highs BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Methven’s Summer School’s organisers are ticking off the days until they open for business and this year’s event is likely to be right up there with the best says Sandy Redmond. The committee chairperson said the school is close to a sell out with nine courses already full and many close to reaching capacity. The school is in its 25th year and some courses have been running for all of that time but each year new courses are added as new ideas and requests come

forward. One of the additions to this year’s school is home curing and tutor Allenton butcher Paddy Kennedy could be leading a new food trend. He’s joining with New Zealand Pork in promoting what could be the hottest food trend in 2018, home cured pork. The curing methods, which are used all over the world are making a comeback, thanks to simple techniques and delicious natural flavour, Kennedy said. “Home curing is simple, fun and tasty – and with the right technique, is something absolutely anyone can try at home,”

he said. “It’s a great way to preserve meat products using salts, juniper berries, peppers and spices.” The American-style cooking has been growing in popularity in New Zealand foodies in recent years with more and more Kiwis making their own rubs, sauces and smoke-houses as they do in America’s southern states. “And New Zealand pork is a fantastic protein for these cooking styles because of its fat content and flavour profile,” Kennedy said. He believes sustainability and

traceability are other reasons for home-curing’s popularity. “People are really invested in traceability – they want to know where their food comes from now more than ever before. Naturally preserving meat in your own home is an easy way to control and monitor what goes into your food.” He’s keen to see the home cured trend spread in the Ashburton District and is hosting a pork curing course at this year’s Methven Summer School early next month. Summer school runs from January 5 to 10.

Troublesome youths nabbed Two young offenders have been referred to the Police Youth Aid Section after causing commotion in Methven. Police received reports that two males had been smashing bottles on the streets, tearing down Christmas decorations, and causing wilful damage around the Methven mall in the early hours of last Sunday morning. Police arrived on the scene between midnight and 1am, to find the youths near Super Value. Both were spoken to and taken to their homes before being referred to the Police Youth Aid Section.

Trucking on for 50 plus years By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

At 70, John Gemmell reckons if he doesn’t retire now, he’ll never get round to quitting work. For more than 50 years he’s been the man behind the wheel of transport vehicles of all sizes as he’s plied the roads of both the South and North Island. It’s a job he’s loved and while he called time on full time work on Friday, he admits he’ll still be a soft touch if Rural Transport boss Jim Crouchley calls on him to help out. John can’t recall a time when he wasn’t behind the wheel of a truck. He passed his truck licence at 16 and since then he’s worked for several trucking companies and reckons he pretty much carries a map of the country’s roads in his head. Back when John joined the team at Ashburton’s McCormicks Transport becoming a truckie required little more than passing the right licence and climbing in the cab. Locally he worked for both McCormicks and Burnetts and in 1980 moved to the North Island – “my wife had two sisters up there and dragged me up”, he said. Growing up in the Lowcliffe area, Ashburton remained home for John and he moved back into the district in 2010. That saw him sign on as the oldest new employee at Rural Transport at an age when most truckies are looking ahead to retirement. It’s a very different industry today to when John started out. Then there were no driving hours, no log books and truckies basically worked whatever hours were needed to get the job done. “Back then we’d go for two days non-

stop, have 40 winks on the side of the road and get going again. Now there’s too much red tape and we do a lot of things that we don’t need to do,” he said. The changes have probably been good for the industry; in the old days you got away with a lot you’d never dare try today, John said. His first truck was an Austin flat deck and his first stock truck a TK Bedford. Most of his years have been spent on stock trucks, initially accompanied by his team of dogs. Now the dogs have gone, but the tough work of loading stock has not. “I can still do the work, but it is pretty tough,” he said. It’s that hard work, John reckons, that’s kept him fit, healthy and still firing on all cylinders. His boss, says John could teach younger workers a thing or two about work ethics. “There has never been an issue with whatever time you asked John to start work. He’d be there. He never ever grizzled and he’d knock off when the job was done He’d do anything, even the rubbish jobs,” Jim said. He’s keeping his fingers crossed John will stay on his relieving roster. Having a good attitude to work goes a long way to ensuring a job is enjoyable, John said. “Why say no to something if you don’t have to. Some of the young guys need a real push to get them going. If the job’s there to be done I’ll do it. I’ve never been late for work in my life and I haven’t had a sick day since I’ve been here.” Retirement may eventually mean a move to Nelson but John’s in no hurry to leave town.

Everything’s all set for the biggest lunch in town By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

It’ll be the biggest Christmas lunch in town when more than 100 strangers become one another’s family for the day at this year’s Ashburton Community Christmas dinner. Organiser Ann Allott and her team spent yesterday writing name tags for diners, compiling pick up lists for those who needed transport and ticking off dozens of items on their to do list.

With four years leading the organising team for an event that has run over many years, Allott said the Christmas lunch now runs to a tried and tested formula. This year’s lunch has changed to a new venue, the Tinwald Hall, and Allot is counting her good fortune in being able to set up tables earlier in the week to lessen the workload on Christmas Eve. As it did every year, the com-

selection of vegetables and a full array of desserts. Chef for the day is Danny Lysaght who’s been running the kitchen for several years. For him the day is a double celebration – Christmas and his birthday. People come to the community lunch for a range of reasons, Allott said. Some may be alone, others may be families who want to share lunch with other families and some may be newcomers to

town. “It’s not just an event for the old or those who’re alone. It’s good for the older people to have families with children around and it seems we have more children coming this year.” While it’s good to let organisers know if you want to attend, people can also turn up on the day. “It’s nice to know they’re coming so we can make them a name tag, but no one is ever turned away,” Allott said.

munity opened its heart when it came to volunteering to help out on Christmas Day, she said. “We’re so very grateful to those people who’ve offered to help and to the businesses who’ve donated. A lot of people do a lot of work to make this lunch happen.” Doors open for diners at noon and lunch will be served at 12.30pm. ow you celebrate Christmas has a lot to do with where you are along the sliding scale of life. When you can look back further than you can expect to look forward, you see that there’s a pattern to the way Christmas is celebrated; how you do it depends where you are in the festive cycle. The first stage of Christmas is childhood. Christmas is filled with wonder, excitement and a build up that never seems to end. The simple joy of unwrapping a parcel, the reunion with cousins and rarely seen family, the excitement of running free with kin while the mums, dads and grandparents talk, eat and share family lore. It’s pure magic. Stage one can last from birth to early teens. That stage gradually morphs into stage two, a cluster of years where family gatherings are stifling, presents often disappointing and, while there are plenty of bright spots, they juggle with embarrassment at the antics of the olds, at hearing family stories you’d rather not hear and seeing family dynamics in all their raw and often ugly glory. Stage two can last from early to late teens. And then there are the years where you manage to escape the filial commitment to make it home for Christmas, the years when you’re busy getting over the night before, ready to tackle the night ahead. Christmas is an obligatory phone call home, duty done for the day. It could be distance, it could be work, or it could be simply a desire to cast aside the traditions, but those are the freedom years where Christmas is celebrated – if at all – your way. Stage three can last from late teens as long as you have the courage and desire to run free. Love or the nesting instinct drives the transition into the responsible years where you start the Christmas cycle over again. You watch your own children enjoy the wonder stage, you carefully buy gifts, you’re filled with anticipation and celebrations once again take on a huge sense of joy. You relive the Christmases of your youth through your children’s eyes. Stage four runs until your kids hit their teens Unwittingly, you’re part of the great Christmas cycle. You have become the family embarrassment. Your kids are half grown, your oldies are really old and you’re left in the middle holding the family to-

This fifth age of Christmas seems endless. But eventually the kids move out, move overseas, are too busy to come home. The really old oldies have either checked out or simply don’t care about Christmas and finally you can look in the mirror and say I’M IN CHARGE. For a few short years you can say NO. If you want to eat toast for the day you can, if you want to ignore the whole Christmas carousel you can, but if you want to hop on board then you can hit up absent kids (yes make them feel guilty), knock on a friend’s door or head down to the city mission. During the I’M IN CHARGE stage there is no wrong way to do Christmas. Stage six lasts until grandchildren arrive. Suddenly you realise that being selfish is over-rated. You willingly turn back the clock – again – to the first age of Christmas, happily sharing the event with children and grandchildren. This is the best stage of all, you get all of the pleasure, as much of the hard work as you want and, if you play it right, the post-Christmas mess is left at someone else’s home. One of the joys of your third crack at stage one is knowing that you will never again be in the position of trying to please everyone except yourself. Christmas from a grandparent’s perspective is as good as it gets – the grandkids love you, your own kids think you’re pretty okay – most of the time – and when you’ve had enough you get in the car and go home. Christmas done and dusted for another year.

Christmas elderly wishes 2017 Wish granted; favour returned Bev’s special wish delivered to her from afar

By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

When Janice Duggan’s Christmas Wish volunteer came knocking at her Hampstead door, he had a familiar face which she couldn’t quite place. “And I knew I’d come to her house before, but couldn’t figure out when,” said volunteer Steve Stratford. He had in fact been to Janice’s house some years ago to collect his dog, after it ran away and Janice kindly looked after it and contacted him. But last Saturday it was Steve’s time to give back and help out Janice, by cleaning the windows around her property. Janice is awaiting surgery on her left foot and has also hurt her right knee, making it difficult to be mobile. “It’s hard to cope with some things.” “I spend a lot of time inside because of I can’t really get around … but I think it’s been about three years since I was last able to clean the windows … and I like being able to look out and see the birds,” she said. As someone who did a lot of volunteer work herself, Janice

said it was nice to be helped out. “Steve’s done a great job.” She said Steve had also gone

above and beyond and helped her to drain her pool. “I’m very happy.”

Bev Anderson wasn’t having the greatest day on Wednesday. “Things were just all over the place – I wasn’t in the best way,” said the Rosebank resident. But then along came a big surprise to put a big smile on her face – a box of homemade shortbread and a bag of Christmas cherries, delivered by volunteer Lucy Clough. Bev was delighted to learn that her daughter in Australia had nominated her for a Christmas wish, and organised delivery of her favourite festive treats. “I just burst into tears,” said Bev. “It was a big surprise.” With trouble using her hands, Bev said she is unable to get around in the kitchen like she could six years ago. “I used to do a lot of cooking and baking. I loved it,” she said. “Now there’s not so much I can do – but sometimes you want something other than

The demand on mental health services in Canterbury is growing and to keep pace with that need there needs to be a radical rethink in where help is targeted and how that help is funded, says Canterbury District Health Board clinical director of child, adolescent and family mental health Dr Harith Swadi. He talks to reporter Sue Newman.

Dr Harith Swadi

Our kids need A

sk Dr Harith Swadi how he thinks Canterbury fares when it comes to delivering the mental health services that are needed and he’ll tell you we’re not doing as well as we could. Funding shortfalls, understaffing and a lack of services for younger children are all impacting on the region’s overall mental health. The CDHB’s director of child, adolescent and family mental health says funding and the way services are provided has to change. In particularly, money needs to be directed into providing services for younger children to ensure challenging behaviours are dealt with before those behaviours become mental health issues. It’s an ambulance at the top of the cliff approach that Swadi says will benefit the community as a whole. In the aftermath of the Canterbury earthquakes the region’s mental health service was given a share of the earthquake response funding from central government that equated to three fulltime

equivalent staff members for 18 months. That’s funding he’s grateful for, but says it only goes part way towards providing the depth of service that’s needed for young people of all ages. Addressing distress earlier rather than waiting until it manifests itself as significant mental health issues in older children is imperative, Swadi says. “They seemed to think the earthquake would cause a bit of a problem for one-and-a-half years and then it would be back to normal. We said the problems will only be starting after 18 months and we were right, we had the increase in demand after 18 months because initially natural resilience and community support helped people cope.” He persuaded the Ministry of Health to continue funding the additional staff members and the School Based Mental Health Team was established to support schools and help them support their young people. That team works in schools with

staff to create frontline awareness around how to react when students were exhibiting signs of mental health issues such as bullying, self-harming or anxiety. Currently his seven full and part-time staff are looking after 147 schools, providing whatever support a school needs. “We don’t have a programme we roll out. Our service is to provide according to what a school needs, what its problems are. It could be disruptive behaviour, cutting, self harming. It varies from one school to another and because it’s tailor made that’s why it’s been so successful,” Swadi said. The team’s objective is simple – increasing a school’s ability to support its students. The support service covers schools from Kaikoura to Ashburton and each school has a key contact person. Schools are carefully monitored, with staff attending pastoral care meetings and staying in close contact with teachers. “At any time we may also talk

about individual kids and if the schools are seeing any major mental health problems then these are referred on to the mental health service.” Swadi said the school service was about working upstream, providing intervention early enough in the process before a problem became significant. “We talk about resilience, what can schools do to build a kid’s resilience. If we can prevent things from happening by making sure their environment is not too stressful. Adversity is not a bad thing as long as we learn from it, resilience is about learning from experiences.” Developing resilience meant young people were better able to deal with stresses in life such as the break up of a relationship that could become the precursor to suicide. “It’s about being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, about feeling connected. These are the sorts of things we try to encourage kids and schools to

help earlier deal with. That’s the important thing about school-based mental health.” His service was connected with virtually every school in the Ashburton District and held clinics every day of the week in the district, Swadi said. The amount of time spent with an individual school varied according to need, but the demand in Ashburton was now higher than it had ever been, he said. “That’s expected though because of your increasing population and the fact you have more diversity now. With the expansion of a town, the social issues and social differences become different and that’s when we usually see an increase in demand.” In the past the service visited Ashburton one day a week; now it is every day. Young people are normally seen within three weeks of referral for their first appointment, if the need is urgent, within a week, but in an emergency an appointment can be made for that day, Swadi said.

The biggest hand brake on the service was the failure to match increased demand with increased funding, he said. Demand had increased 98 per cent since the Canterbury earthquakes; funding had barely moved. “The earthquake is now part of the fabric of life, it is there and at some point it seems to have been decided that this is the new norm.” Added to earthquake-related issues was the greater acceptance around seeking assistance for mental health issues whereas in the past there was a stigma and shame and this was also increasing demand for the service, Swadi said. While the school-based service is working well, he believes intervention is not coming early enough in the school system, before disruptive behaviours had an opportunity to become mental health issues. The most significant growth area was in children under 12 or 13, he said. “A lot of this is about anxiety.” Swadi wants greater investment

in dealing with young people’s issues, providing help before they hit their teens, at the primary health care level. “At the moment if a GP sees an under 13-year-old with disruptive behaviour or anxiety they don’t know what to do with them so they send them to us, but these kids don’t really have moderate to serious psychiatric problems, they have behaviour problems. “There is a big area of deficit in kids who have problems early in life.” If the systems were in place and funded to provide early intervention those problems would be dealt with before they became deeper teenage psychiatric issues, Swadi said. “I’d rather these things were dealt with early and taken care of instead of waiting until they become severe and then need to come to specialist services. “There’s a real problem because we wouldn’t need to see these kids if the right systems were in place. All it would take is for someone to

identify their problems and work with them so they learn how to manage their issues.” Swadi has been pushing the case for increased services for children for a long time but said increased services would need to be matched by an increased workforce in mental health. “This workforce is not well paid and people don’t want to go into it because it’s a very stressful job that has no financial incentive.” He trained in the United Kingdom and has worked in New Zealand for 17 years. “There you could retire at 55 with full benefits in recognition of the stressfulness of the job. Here we need to do something to increase the training places for people and we need to pay them better.” While mental health services might not be in crisis, they were certainly close to being overwhelmed by client demand and some of that could be alleviated by a greater focus on younger children’s needs, he said.

IRD targets bitcoin

Shares skyrocket 500pc subsequently renamed Long Island Brand Beverages. The decision to now change the name to Long Blockchain has delivered an almost-immediate market response, with shares in the business rising six-fold, or 500 per cent. This is the latest in a neardaily phenomenon sweeping the stock market, where obscure microcap companies reorient to focus on some aspect of the mania sparked by bitcoin’s 1600 per cent rally this year. According to the Telegraph, the company says it will change its name to Long Blockchain Corp because its parent company, Cullen Holdings, is shifting its corporate focus towards the “exploration of and investment in opportunities that leverage the benefits of blockchain technology”. The company, which will ask Nasdaq to change its trading symbol in connection with the name change, said it will continue to focus on the ready-to-

Eric Watson drink segment of the beverage industry. It has also registered the new web domain www.longblockchain.com. Long Blockchain so far has little to show for its aspirations. It has no agreements with any blockchain firms, and says “there is no assurance that a definitive agreement with these, or any other entity, will be entered into or ultimately consummated”.

It follows a similar move by a British company in October, when On-line Plc announced plans to change its name to Online Blockchain Plc, sending its share price soaring 394 per cent – the biggest one-day gain for the small-cap company since its first listing in 1996. At the time, the company said: “Blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies are a new and exciting area we have been working on for some time. “We feel the time is right to re-name the company to reflect these developments, where we believe the future growth will be in our sector.” On-line’s share price has continued to climb since its namechange, from around 15p in October to a high of 134p this week. Shares in Colorado-based Bioptix Inc also flew in the days leading up to its name change to Riot Blockchain Inc, nearly doubling in value, according to Bloomberg. - NZME

Don’t sack by text Businessman Paul Davys, best known for his offer to buy the Warriors, has been ordered to pay his former nanny $15,500 for sacking her in a text message. The Employment Relations Authority found that Kelly Randall was Davys’ employee, not a contractor as he claimed, and that she was unjustifiably dismissed. Randall was paid $625 for a 25-hour working week and provided with a credit card for work-related approved expenses, a mobile phone and use of a car during work hours. - NZME

Those between the ages of 45 and 49 now earn $1307 per week, down from $1323. Rogers said he was surprised to see the earnings drop for those in their early 40s. “Typically when someone moves through their 40s, that is when they start to get recognised more,” he said. Strategic Pay chief executive John McGill said the decline in higher-paid roles was difficult to understand, but could reflect tight salary policies from the previous government influencing overall figures. “This is the age cohort where we find a lot of senior technical, managerial, professional roles and generally the demand is strong for this group,” McGill said. “At this stage, I would see the data as a blip in a longer term positive trend, a very small correction perhaps.” Teens, aged between 15 and 19, unsurprisingly earn the lowest weekly income, recorded at $356 per week – unchanged from earlier in the year.

Data shows those aged between 30 and 34 earn an average of $1145 per week and $1242 for those aged 35 to 39. Those between ages of 50 and 54 earn $1279 per week and a weekly average of $1308 is earned by those between the ages of 55 and 59. Once you hit 60, however, data reveals that earnings decrease with the average weekly income dropping to $1133 and a further decline of $214 for those 65 and over. McGill said he expected to see large movements at lower paid levels next year. “The Minister of Finance will have to deal with a lot of raised expectations around pay and this will be a careful path he will have to traverse,” he said. “What will be the effect of these overall trends on the age-related data? “Possibly larger movements across the board, more so in the lower pay groups, less so for the oldest cohorts would be my assessment.” - NZME

Millennials do best in wage stakes Millennials are the big winners in this year’s pay stakes by generation, with workers in their 20s now earning $33 more per week than they were earlier in the year. Millennials – those in their 20s – saw an average weekly earnings increase of $33, recorded at $864 per week before tax, compared to $831 in April this year. Data from Statistics New Zealand reveals those aged between 20 and 24 now earn $701 per week, up from $691 and those aged between 25 and 29 cash in $1027 per week, up from $970 – an increase of $57. Roman Rogers, regional general manager of New Zealand for recruitment firm Hudson, said the pay rise for millennial workers was no surprise. “Particularly in some areas now there are some skill shortages and organisations do need to pay more to get talent,” Rogers said. Particular roles, especially those relating to technology jobs, were seeing increasing demand. The rise could also be down to more young people choosing to go into apprenticeships for trades where they could earn more earlier in their career, he said. “There is a shortage in highly skilled tradespeople.” The 40s is still the golden age for earners – the time when most people earn the most throughout their careers. Those aged between 40 and 44 earn the highest amount compared with all other age brackets - a weekly average of $1318 before tax, down $7 from earlier in the year, recorded at $1325.

The Inland Revenue Department is working on guidelines for the tax treatment of cryptocurrencies and may regard it as similar to the proceeds of gold bullion sales that had been held for profit. An IRD spokesman said preparatory work “is under way on issuing public guidance regarding the tax treatment of cryptocurrencies”. The department declined to comment on the implications for creditors of Bitcoinica, the Aucklandbased currency trader put into liquidation in 2012, with the spokesman saying it was unable to comment because the liquidation of the offshore company that held much of its assets is ongoing. - NZME

Long Island Iced Tea Group, a business part-owned by expatriate New Zealand businessman Eric Watson, has tapped into the cryptocurrency craze by changing its name to Long Blockchain Group. Blockchain is the technology behind the Bitcoin phenomenon, enabling any type of encrypted data – from electronic money to medical records – to be shared between members of a closed network. Watson filed the name change with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission on December 6 under Cullen Holdings, the parent company of the business. Watson, whose fortune was estimated at $420 million in the National Business Review Rich List this year, entered into an agreement in early 2015 to merge his United States dairy farming venture Cullen Agricultural with the Long Island Iced Tea Corp. OUR VIEW

It’s a time to start some new traditions Matt Markham

EDITOR

C

hristmas is so often about traditions and this year we get to make a new one here in the Ashburton District. For as long as any of us probably care to remember we’ve been dragging ourselves out to the Ashburton Racecourse on Boxing Day to enjoy the fun of the Boxing Day races. Anyone who does that this year is in for a bit of a shock though, because there will be nothing there. A change in date will see the meeting held tomorrow, on Christmas Eve with a 1pm start and in wanting to start new traditions while still paying homage to the old ones, it should be a great family day out. While it’s a shame that we no longer have that iconic Boxing Day date, at least we still get the chance to get out to the races and enjoy a day out and to relax before the hustle and bustle of the following day. So, if you have nothing to do on Christmas Eve, head on out to the track – there’s a gold coin donation for entry and it’s all going to the Ashburton Branch of the Cancer Society and I can guarantee you won’t be bored with plenty of action both on and off the track. Today also marks the last day that we print before Christmas and we don’t print on Christmas Day. So, I want to take the opportunity to wish all of our readers a really awesome, simply Kiwi and happy Christmas on Monday. Enjoy the day with your loved ones, eat far too much and don’t be afraid to have a cold one if the weather is going to be as warm as what they are suggesting. But most of all, please be safe out there. Don’t get in the car if you’ve had a few and be cautious if you’re out on the water. It would be the best gift ever to get through these next couple of weeks without losing one of our own to some form of tragedy. It’s a story we don’t want to write and a story I’m sure you don’t want to have to tell. Feliz Navidad.

T

he Political Oscar of the Year goes, entirely unopposed, to Andrew Little. He, you will recall, put party and country firmly before personal ambition. On August 1, with the Labour Party showing a meagre 26 per cent in the polls, he knew he was not destined to become Prime Minister of Aotearoa, New Zealand, and the Labour Party was facing a fourth, successive, humiliating defeat. So, for the sake of that party, for which he has worked all his life, he decided his resignation was required and someone else appointed, who might have more rapport with the electorate. Thus, the appearance on the scene of “the girl with the winning smile” and the twinkling teeth, the melter of the hardest of hearts, – perhaps, even, a latter day, “Queen of Hearts” – Jacinda Ardern. Within hours, Jacindamania was breaking out all over the country; people were falling over themselves to contribute to the party and, in a matter of six short weeks, Jacinda was our youngest, bestlooking Prime Minister in the nation’s history. All the work of the selfless Andrew Little, who should clearly receive a knighthood for his noble gesture, and quickly, before the-party-he-loves abolishes such baubles. The Political Cold Porridge Oscar, meanwhile, goes, just as certainly, to Winston Peters Having, by dint of his party’s

puny percentage of the vote, found himself on September 23, or thereabouts, holding the balance of power – a position he had coveted with unashamed greed since the last election – Winston, supposedly, went into negotiation with Labour and National as to which of those supine supplicants he would bless with his support. The playing field was said to be level and it was simply a question of which of the suitors could generate sufficient flattery to win him over. But (genuine “shock”, “horror”) it turns out that the legendary playing field was not level at all. Two days before we all went to the polling booths, (and entirely unbeknownst to us) Winston had brought charges against various senior members of the National Party, whom he accused of leaking to the media details of the irregularities of his pension, a state of affairs that, apparently, had existed for sometime. Thus the chances of his dealing objectively with the negotiating representations of National were nil from the start. When this information came,

at last, to light, after Peters had finally descended from his mountain and made plain his decision to go with Labour, the media at once described it as Winston’s “Utu” on the National Party. From the start of these artificially prolonged discussions (by Winston, of course, while he supposedly wrestled with his conscience and the longterm good of the nation) there was only ever going to be one outcome. It was, in fact, an exercise in sustained and deliberate deception by a cynical politician on the make. His reward, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and all this for a man who once, famously, claimed to be strongly opposed to the baubles of office. Yeah right, Winston. We believe you; we really do. So cold porridge seems a suitable reminder of his duplicity though some might feel boiling oil likely to be more effective. The Flawed System Oscar goes once more to the Kiwi version of MMP, Mixed Member Proportional. Again it was tried and, as ever, found wanting. If a party with the highest percentage of the vote and the most numerous group of MPs does not qualify, in its own right to be at least, and automatically, offered the chance to form a government, then “transparent” – which we are constantly urged to be in these days of rabid political correctness – democracy is the big loser. It is, in fact,

more than that; it is a travesty. Finally – though we could all name our own choices in this year-end summary – there is an Oscar for the most promising, emerging Member/Minister. In my opinion, she has to be American-born, New Zealandassimilated, Julie-Anne Genter. As associate Minister of Transport she has already shown a hard-nosed approach, delivered with a heart-warming smile and an alluring United States twang, which augurs well for her time on the stage of Kiwi politics. It is my guess she will be a force for good, common sense and well aware of the art of the possible, the essence of all good politics. So there we have it. Our parliamentary representatives are currently about to enjoy their Yuletide rest and recreation. But not for long. Soon the Beehive will once again echo to the sounds of raised voices and passionate perorations while our new Speaker, the breathtakingly ill-qualified Trevor Mallard, struggles to keep order. He may find it easier to order his own exit from the House. After all, he is very used to it. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. was the night before Christmas and all things were quiet, apart from Uncle Henry who was obliterating his diet. As he stood in the kitchen with the fridge door open, he drooled at the pavlova secretly hoping, that no one would notice if he took a bite, along with seven slices of ham for a snack that night. Then came the sound of some gumboots on the floor, and the turn of a key in the old back door. Who should walk in on this hot summer Christmas night, but Santa himself giving poor Uncle Henry a fright. He dropped the pav which crashed to the floor, and reached out to get a grip on the open fridge door. Instead he pulled it too hard as he went down, causing it to topple onto the ’70’s lino so dirty and brown. On top of the fridge was a bottle of scotch and an old weetbix tin, with the ashes of Aunt Bertha contained within. They flew through the air like a North Korean missile and landed on top of the partially blind worm infested cat called Frizzle.

Who howled in pain then took off going the clappers, and bowled headlong straight into poor Santa’s knackers! He grunted in pain, it was almost mute, then keeled over and lost his left gumboot. It flew out the door and whistled past the leaky garden hose, only to land on Rudolph’s over sensitive reindeer nose. The boot bounced off and flew through the night, smashing Uncle Henry’s one and only outdoor solar light. Now Rudolph was strong and big but his nose was his archilles heel, the weight of Santa’s boot he could certainly feel. It caused him to kick and jump faster and faster, which set off the nervous twins, Dancer and Prancer. This jostled the sleigh and caused it to slide and break loose, down the driveway like a

maniacal Mother Goose. As Rudolph settled down and tried to calm his best friend Dancer, the overloaded sleigh slammed into Uncle Henry’s 1979 Mitsubishi Lancer. With the handbrake off and not being an auto, the Lancer set off backwards in the moonlight glow. It rolled down the drive and across the road, onto Widow Ramsbottom’s garden, crushing her gnomes. She heard the kerfuffle and wobbled out the door, to be confronted by her favourite gnome whose head was no more. Upset and indignant she phoned the cops, who were down at the all-night dairy buying Fru Ju Iceblocks. They arrived at the scene to begin their investigation, just as Santa walked out with only one boot and a face of consternation. He needed something cold to cool the heat down below, spied the Fru Jus and thought he’d give them a go. With a flick of the wrist he shoved them into his sparkly red suit, and turned around to look for his boot. Now PC Waddlesworth was not too happy, that Santa used his

Fru Ju to make an icepack nappy. He went for the taser but missed completely with his 50,000 volts, instead striking Widow Ramsbottom with the equivalent of a year’s worth of lightning bolts. She lit up brighter than her neighbours’ Warehouse Christmas tree, and toppled over sideways on her artificial knee. And that’s the scene that greeted the paramedics on Hayworth Street, a fried out granny, off her feet. A Santa with swollen knackers like ripe golden grapefruit, mumbling something about a missing gumboot. A dazed Uncle Henry looking for his Lancer normally parked near the climbing rose, and a Eurasian Tundra Reindeer with a shiny red nose. So if you should feel hungry in the middle of the night, watch out for Santa, he could give you a fright! Peter Livingstone is the principal of Tinwald School. Babies – tiny, but life changing B

abies, most of us love them, they are cute and adorable, who wouldn’t want to pick them up and cuddle them. Babies have been very much part of my life this year. Three families that I am close to have welcomed a baby into their life. And as I held each of these children in my arms I looked into their eyes and thought “Oh little child what does the future hold for you, who are you destined to be”. You see each child is a gift of God. A precious parcel of potential and love given to us to love and nurture. Sadly, not every child is fortunate to live in an environment that sees them nurtured, loved and helped to reach their full potential. With Christmas upon us I was thinking back over the past few months as I have watched these little ones grow and start

to show signs of their personality and I wondered what Jesus’ parents thought as they held him for the first time. Did they hope he would grow up to be a loving and kind person, did they hope he would make a difference in the world, did they pray he would live a good long life, being a model citizen and giving them grandchildren? Possibly they did, as that is what most parents hope for. We can tick the boxes to say that he was kind and loving, made a difference in the world and continued to down the centuries and he was a model citizen. While his life was not particu-

larly long, especially in today’s terms. and he didn’t give them grandchildren, yet through his life and teachings we have the most thrilling message humankind as ever heard. That first Christmas a tiny fragile little baby was born that would change the world. Martin Luther recalled that when he went into his classroom his teacher bowed to the students and when asked “why?” he replied, “I am bowing to the future leaders of this community” and they were just young children. As long as there are babies in the world, there is a great hope for the world. So, this Christmas as you remember the birth of Jesus may you be reminded of the potential that lies in every baby and the life they are nurtured to live. As we are all God’s children, whether we accept that or not,

Paedo ringleader jailed The head of a paedophile ring whose members live-streamed each other while subjecting young children to sickening abuse has been handed nine life sentences. Michael Emerton, who went by the name Ginger Beak on dating app Grindr, also used Skype and TruNude to establish the depraved network with five other men, who would then transmit the sexual images to each other by videolink. On several occasions 33-year-old Emerton arranged to meet his accomplices to take part in sex acts in front of children, the Daily Mail reports. He was arrested in November 2016 after Hertfordshire Police had been tipped-off by another force. He admitted 20 offences earlier this year, including four counts of rape of a child and three of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and was given seven life sentences as a result. Emerton, of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, later admitted further offences including conspiring with the other defendants in order to rape, commit sexual activity with a child or engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child. He was given a further two life sentences. The judge said he had caused psychological trauma to the children who will face a “lifetime of difficulties”. Other members of the gang included Matthew Webby, 30, from Hemel Hempstead, Robert Lindsay, 39, from Markyate, Paul Stevens, 54, from Northchurch, Simon Wintle, 44, from Hemel Hempstead and Thomas Perry, 28, from Northchurch. Stevens was sentenced to 10 years with a five year licence extension, Webby was sentenced to nine years with a five year licence extension, Lindsay was sentenced to five years three months with a three year licence extension, Wintle was sentenced to two years six months. Perry will be sentenced on January 24. Judge Michael Kay QC told

Paedophile ringleader Michael Emerton. the perverts their crimes were so shocking they undermined his faith in humanity. He said: “It is a sad feature of life as a judge in the criminal court, and for others involved in the criminal justice system such as the police, the lawyers and the probation officers, that one has time and again to read about and sift through the evidence and detail of sexual depravity, very often involving children. “Even within this field of appalling and sickening abuse, there is from time to time a case which is so shocking that it undermines one’s faith in humanity. “This is one such case. “Never before have I read a police summary of a case

which begins with a warning that the reader should be very wary of the content due to the abhorrent nature of the offending.” The police investigation, codenamed Operation Pendent, was the largest ever conducted by the Hertfordshire Child Online Safeguarding Team (COST). Chief Inspector Dee Perkins said after the sentencing: “This was an extensive inquiry which resulted in the sharing of intelligence with more than 50 other law enforcement agencies. “Emerton, the paedophile at the centre of this investigation, mercilessly exploited children for his own sexual gratification and for those other men who he met online.

“The nine life sentences he has received reflect the disturbing nature of his actions. Work is ongoing to support the victims and make sure they have the best possible chance of a normal life ahead. “Not only was this a large and complex investigation but also one that involved working through a large amount of video evidence in which this group had documented their own horrific crimes. “Our reward is to see these men behind bars today and for many years ahead.” Helena Burman, Senior Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service said: “This case involved the serious and sustained sexual abuse of vulnerable young children by a ring of active paedophiles. “The young age of the victims greatly increases the seriousness of the offences. As a result of the hard work and diligence of the prosecution team, and the strength of the evidence, four of the defendants pleaded guilty and the fifth was found guilty after trial. “It is only due to the great courage of the victims that this abuse was brought to light, and the full extent of the despicable and lawless behaviour of these people revealed. “I know that nothing can undo what happened to the victims, but I hope that the convictions and today’s sentences will give them, with the passage of time and appropriate support, at least a small sense that justice has been done. “My thoughts are very much with them at this time.” A spokesman for Hertfordshire Police said: “In one instance, intelligence was shared via the National Crime Agency with the Department of Homeland Securities about a potential offender in the USA. “The intelligence suggested there was an immediate risk of harm to a potential victim. The suspect was detained in custody by American authorities within 48 hours of the evidence of offending being discovered in the UK.” - PA

Equal pay an issue In her tear-filled final goodbye, Catt Sadler spoke about what had been the peak of her two-decade career: a live entertainment news show called Daily Pop. “This experience for me at this table has been an absolute dream come true,” she said. But her farewell left one pivotal question dangling: Why was she leaving her dream job so soon after reaching the top? The answer came a short time later in a post on Sadler’s personal blog that thrust the broadcaster into the ongoing debate about gender pay inequality in America. An executive at the company informed her that her co-host was making nearly double what she made, even though they started at the network in the same year and were doing basically the same job.

Melbourne incident ‘a deliberate act’ Horrifying CCTV footage has captured the moment a man drove an SUV into a crowd of people at a busy Melbourne intersection. At least 19 people – including one New Zealander – were injured when a white SUV driven by a 32-year-old with a history of drug use mounted a tram track and accelerated into pedestrians outside bustling Flinders St Station.

Video captured by nearby security cameras shows the Suzuki Grand Vitara pull out from a street park and head towards a large crowd of people crossing the street. The car appears to accelerate as it approaches the crossing pedestrians and continues to charge through the crowds striking innocent people in its path. The crowd can be seen to

disperse as bodies are flung onto the road after apparently being hit by the vehicle. Witnesses at the scene described seeing bodies flying “like dolls” after being hit. Police are treating the shocking incident as a “deliberate act”. The driver, named by the Herald Sun as Saeed Noori, 32, has been revealed as having a history of mental illness and

drug use, and was on a mental health plan. Speaking yesterday morning, Victoria Police acting chief commissioner Shane Patton said the man had a medical appointment booked on Thursday. “He is on a mental health plan and he was due for an appointment yesterday, which he missed,” Mr Patton said in an interview. - AAP

Pageant emails ‘appalling’ Dick Clark Productions says it has cut ties with the Miss America Organisation over internal emails by pageant senior leadership that ridiculed past winners’ appearance, intelligence and sex lives. The Huffington Post reported yesterday that the Miss America Organisation’s CEO, Sam Haskell, exchanged emails with a writer for the televised pageant and others that included harsh and sometimes defamatory comments about past winners. Dick Clark Productions, which produces the nationally televised pageant broadcasts, tells The Associated Press it has cut ties with the pageant over the emails, calling them “appalling”.

Riding Shotgun was one half of a training and riding double for Collett and Riccarton Park trainer, Terri Rae. They won earlier in the day with Shangold who was victorious in the first of the day. Apprentice jockey Tanya Jonker also claimed a riding double when she won on Windemere Lass and Bonaparte.

Weekend Sports Box A look ahead to the sporting weekend, with a glance back over the shoulder at the week that was. On the couch . . . The Black Caps were in cruise control on Wednesday against the West Indies, but for entertainment’s sake let’s hope it is not the same today when they clash at the Hagley Oval. Without Williamson and Southee the teams look slightly more even, and it should be worth parking up on the couch for a watch.

Out and about … It might not be the same old Boxing Day races, but Sunday’s meeting at the Ashburton Racecourse should be an entertaining day out, and with it being angled as one for the kids, should be a lot of fun.

The punt . . . Colin Munro let the gang down on Wednesday, finishing up as the second highest run-scorer, so this week we are

NY Knicks v Atlanta - Winning Team & Margin: NY Knicks 10 & Under @ $2.40 Minnesota v Dallas - Winning Team & Margin: Minnesota 10 & Under @ $2.40 Indiana v Denver - Winning Team & Margin: Indiana 10 & Under @ $2.40 Detroit v Boston - Winning Team & Margin: Boston 10 & Under @ $2.40 New Orleans v Philadelphia - Winning Team & Margin: New Orleans 10 & Under @ $2.40

Pic of the week . . . The All Blacks released this delightful infographic for all the stats nerds out there earlier in the week, summing up the year that has been. However, it doesn’t take an eagle eyed reader to question who Sam Kane (Cane) is racking up all those tackles, or why they played a game in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean (against Whales maybe?)

Fight deal ‘close’ Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn says the Joseph Parker v Anthony Joshua fight will likely be signed after Christmas. Speaking overnight, Hearn said the deal for a world heavyweight unification bout was close for next year but not quite done yet. “Will we get an announcement before the turn of the year? I’d like one,” Hearn told IFL TV. “We’re close with Joseph Parker, the deal’s not done yet. We’re drafting paper work, it’s a very long process, it’s very complicated. “We have had good conversations … with David Higgins. “He’s done a great job in pushing this fight and I believe he’s got a great deal for his fighter as well.” The Herald understands Parker’s promoter Higgins has agreed a $12 million purse for the 25-year-old. It will probably be held in Cardiff on March 31. “This is the fight we want,” Hearn added. “This is the only fight where someone is being remotely realistic. And why? Because Joseph Parker wants the scalp of Anthony Joshua. “Others talk about it. “Joseph Parker wants this fight because he believes he can beat Anthony Joshua and he knows if he wins this fight he be-

Joseph Parker comes the biggest star in the sport. “That’s why he’s taking this fight and by the way he’s going to get a fortune for it as well.” Hearn added of Joshua: “People talk about ‘oh he’s got a weak chin’, and he’s vulnerable, yeah – I’ll tell you what, you get in the ring with this monster. “He’s a beast and he’s improving every day and he’s hungrier than ever to take these guys out. “And he wants to take Joseph Parker and Deontay Wilder out of the game.” - NZME

Christmas Eve Sunday, December 24 Ashburton Racecourse First race 1.02 pm going to have a wee crack at a horse running around on Sunday at Ashburton. James Dean has had two back to back second place finishes and ran well in both, so we fancy him to take home the Ashburton Cup in race six, with a nice little $5 each way to see him home for a return. Pool: $45

The gambler . . . $100 NBA Multi wins $17,518.00 A big comeback from the Indiana Pacers helped this punter collect almost $20K from their NBA Multi. Sacramento v Toronto - Winning Team & Margin: Toronto 11 & Over @ $2.20

Quote of the week . . . Time to take a little look back over the sporting year that has been in the terms of sporting quotes, and we turn to Australian tennis brat Nick Kyrgios. “He probably deserves a player that is probably more dedicated to the game than I am. I’m not dedicated to the game at all,” Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios on his relationship with coach Sebastien Grosjean.

Family Fun day at the Races. Admission gold coin donation with proceeds to local branch of Cancer Society. Free race book, live music and plenty of activities for the kids.

Question of the week … What finger did young NRL player Angus Crichton have amputated so that he would be able to play at the start of next season? Answer: The middle finger on his left hand.

Claimer ‘worth a crack’ By Matt MarkhaM

ber features. In the field for the Aged Series Pace at Kaikoura, he was scratched after developing a slight cold. “It was nothing real serious, but we didn’t want to trek him all the way up to Kaikoura if he wasn’t 100 per cent right. “He’s working up good and we’ll head to Methven this weekend and see where we at from there.” Hay has a lot of time for the gelding. “I think he’s pretty smart. “Everything we’ve asked of him so far he’s handled really well.”

John Hay is under no illusions that his latest stable acquisition is in any way just going to rock up and win his hometown Cup at Ashburton tomorrow. Hay will line up, for the first time, the former Cran Dalgetytrained pacer Art Union in the feature pace of the day after he was the lucky winner of a ballot of claims when he last raced as a claimer at Addington earlier in the month. “We had talked about it at home and how for $5000 he was probably worth a crack,” Hay said. “One of our friends was heading up to put a claim in on him so we said they might as well put one in for us and we got lucky on the night.” A winner of 17 of his 41 career starts, Art Union is no slouch but that isn’t enough to have his new trainer confident of a big showing. In fact, Hay will just be happy if he’s making ground at the finish. “As long as he’s running on, we’ll be happy. “His work at home has been good and he had a nice hit-out up at Methven last weekend where they ran a pretty slick last quarter. “But the speed of that last quarter is what we will run the whole way this weekend so he’ll have to be good.” Hay has taken on the owner-

ship of the entire himself and although he intends on seeing what he can get out of the son of Art Major, he’s also got one eye on Australia too. “He gets in quite well in the grade over there, so I think in time we will probably send him over there to race. “He can pick up a bit of money along the way and we can have some fun with him.” Sunday’s task won’t be simple with a small, but very select field

of pacers lining up for the Christmas Eve feature. Methven Green Mile runnerup James Dean is out to try and end his sequence of seconds for Leo O’Reilly, while there will also be plenty of eyes on Raukapuka Ruler as he looks to recapture some form in his four-year-old season. Meanwhile, Hay’s other promising pacer, Mighty Santana will head to the workouts this weekend after missing the Novem-

Clarify eyes Manawatu A change of tack has Awapuni the immediate focus for the in-form stayer Clarify. Matamata trainer Peter McKay had originally targeted Ellerslie as the Savabeel gelding’s next port of call until the focus switched to Saturday’s Hotel Coachman Manawatu Cup (2100m). “His work has been exceptional and we were going straight to the Dunstan Feeds Final on New Year’s Day, but I said to Joe Smithies that we’d have a crack at this race,” McKay said. “He’s down in the weights and the field isn’t that strong.” - NZME

Veteran still going Group One winner El Soldado continues to keep time at bay with the veteran on target for a return to top level competition. “He’s coming up well again, he doesn’t know he’s an 11-year-old,” Cambridge trainer and part-owner Phillip Devcich said. “He’s still the same and it would be great to get him to the Auckland Cup again.” El Soldado caused a massive upset when he returned a winning divided of $125 in the 2016 edition of the Group One feature. - NZME

New partnership scores The Tim Butt and Jonny Cox training partnership scored win number one at Forbury Park on Thursday night. The victory came via a bold front-running display from maidener Frankie D with Cox in the sulky. The training partners will not have to go far to discuss the pacer’s future racing plans. In fact, those could be discussed over morning smoko. The horse is raced by stable employee and Tim Butt’s niece, Kimberly Butt, who is also Cox’s partner. She races the horse with her mother, Karen Prendergast.

■ CRICKET

Stokes has ‘huge impact’ By RoB FoRsaith Sorely missed by England in the Ashes series, Ben Stokes’ competitive streak, leadership and cricket nous is proving a boon in Christchurch. Stokes’ arrival at Canterbury three weeks ago was met with feverish interest and plenty of condemnation. Many questioned the merits of hastily signing the allrounder, who continues to sweat on a verdict from UK prosecutors regarding his role in a Bristol brawl in which another man suffered a fractured eye socket. Canterbury coach Gary Stead, who remains unsure how much longer Stokes will be based in his country of birth, has been impressed with the conduct and cricket skills of England’s vicecaptain but also the impact he has had on young team-mates. “He’s brought that knowledge and experience of being in important matches and just been a bit of a calming influence out in the middle,” Stead said yesterday. “You can tell he loves being in a battle on the field ... that competitive approach will hopefully rub off on some of our players. “He doesn’t over-speak or anything but when he talks, people listen. “He’s not shy of chiming in when we’re discussing tactics ... he’s got a very good cricket brain. “He’s started to develop some friendships with some of our guys as well. “It’s been really positive.” Uncertainty surrounds Stokes’ potential return date for England. The 26-year-old was provisionally named in the tourists’ ODI squad for the series that follows the Ashes, starting January 14 in Melbourne. However, England’s cricket

You get the impression Todd Astle will already have marked out his run-up for today’s ODI against the West Indies. He’s clearly itching for more after what he called “a dream come true” debut on Wednesday. Canterbury cricket’s legspinning allrounder turned in a quality performance with the ball, taking three for 33, then chipping in with an unbeaten 15. It’s been a while coming for the 31-year-old, who has played two tests – five years apart – and a couple of T20s against Pakistan early last year. Now he’s completed a full set of international appearances. - NZME

Stoneman new star In the five years since England last had a productive opening pair, it always used to be a question of finding the right partner for Alastair Cook. More and more it looks as though England will have to find a partner for Mark Stoneman, who, aside from the glory tour of 2010-11, has been England’s most successful opening batsman in Australia since Michael Vaughan in 2002-03. Confronting Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, Stoneman has scored more runs than anyone bar Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow. Even if his average is only 32, it is higher than that of Cook in three of his four Ashes series in Australia. - AAP

board won’t settle on Stokes’ punishment until UK prosecutors decide whether to charge him. “We still don’t know a date when he will leave,” Stead said. “I’m sure he was looking at it [the Ashes]. “I know he’ll be disappointed for England.” Stead has handed Stokes ex-

tra responsibility, asking him to open the bowling and bat at No4. The game-breaking allrounder, who was sold for $2.8 million in last year’s Indian Premier League auction, struggled early on in his New Zealand stint but struck form with a match-winning 93 in the T20 contest during last week. “He’s had five matches for us now ... it looks like he’s getting

better and better,” Stead said. “He’s batting a little bit higher than he normally would, but we can grow his experiences and that’s good for him in the long run. “Batting, bowling, fielding – and even at training – he’s going full tilt. “He’s not holding back at all.” - NZME

Rance gets the seal of approval from Hesson Seth Rance may get a chance to show off his “clever” bowling in the second cricket one-day international against the West Indies today. Black Caps coach Mike Hesson said yesterday Neil Broom and Matt Henry will be straight swaps for Kane Williamson and Tim Southee, who are being rested for games two and three. The second game is in Christchurch today. Rance is in for Adam Milne as injury cover and deserves his inclusion in the squad after excellent domestic performances, according to Hesson. “It’s a shame for Adam but his ankle gave way and it could be a two-to-four week injury,” he said. “Seth is an experienced player. “He’s good at the death, swings the new ball and he’s a clever

Tom Latham is filling in for Kane Williamson as skipper. bowler with a lot of tricks.” Stand-in skipper Tom Latham couldn’t wait to get out on Hagley Oval, where family and friends will be watching from the bank. “It’s an exciting opportunity

I’ve been given and at home, on a lovely ground, it’s extra special.” He expected the West Indies to be extra-keen to square the series after a comprehensive loss in game one in Whangarei.

“They are a proud team and a proud nation and will bounce back hard,” he said. “They have a lot of match-winners and we can’t afford to be complacent. “We need to go out and do what we did the other day.” Hesson said he and Latham will have another look at the Hagley Oval pitch before naming the team today. “It is browner than it’s been in recent times so we will have to make a decision whether it’s a two-spinner wicket,” he said. He was also asked about the injuries to key players Martin Guptill and Corey Anderson. “Martin trained in Whangarei and he might play for Auckland on the 24th. “Hopefully he’ll be available for the T20s [against the West Indies],” he said. - NZME

Five years after making his test debut at the MCG because Mitchell Starc had been rested, Jackson Bird is ready to step up if Australia’s spearhead is forced to sit out the fourth Ashes test. Starc remains an unlikely starter for the Boxing Day test because of a minor foot injury, with national selector Mark Waugh confirming the hosts will err on the side of caution. - AAP

Top gong for Kiwi For the second year in a row, a New Zealand player has taken out the ICC Women’s ODI Player of the Year award. Amy Satterthwaite has been recognised for her outstanding 2016-17 season by winning the top one-day prize, a year after captain Suzie Bates claimed the award. The 31-year-old also became just the second player ever to score four consecutive ODI centuries, joining the illustrious company of Sri Lankan great, Kumar Sangakkara. - NZME

Bravo facing demons Five-wicket BBL hero Dwayne Bravo admits he’ll have some mental demons to slay when the Melbourne Renegades host Brendon McCullum’s Brisbane Heat at Etihad Stadium. Tonight, Bravo will be making his competitive return to the venue where he suffered a career-threatening hamstring injury almost a year ago. The star allrounder ripped his left hamstring off the bone chasing a ground ball near the boundary in the Renegades’ third match of BBL06 and spent the next eight months recovering from surgery. “I still have a long way to go but I have no niggles (physically), which is important, it’s just a matter of mentally getting over that hurdle,” Bravo told reporters yesterday. - AAP

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Just because you can read the signs doesn’t mean you’ll follow them. They seem geared toward guiding you down the conventional route. You’ll be in the mood to explore and find your own way. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The struggle is between you and you today. If you’re too strict with yourself, you’ll rebel and do nothing. So be gentle. Praise and encourage yourself. You’re doing so much that’s right. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The people around you may heartily agree, but it’s time to take your idea wider, keeping in mind that there are those in the world at large who believe much, much differently from the way you do. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Clear the air in these last days of the year so you can go into 2018 without baggage. Ultimately it’s negotiation and a fair compromise that will serve you best. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Regarding a rocky relationship: There’s so much that’s possible here, so don’t give up unless you’re truly unwilling to do things differently. Change can still happen. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’re disarming, and you’ll be in the perfect company to exercise your charms. There are those who really need to drop their defences! They’ll be much better for knowing you today. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Today, if you were a bird, you’d be a peacock. You have some colourful stuff to strut! And since birds of a feather flock together, you may be a part of a truly impressive show and tell. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You’ll have to call up powers of diplomacy to deal deftly with the group today. These guys aren’t going to get along unless there’s someone in the middle to buffer the conversation. That person is you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Look on the bright side – not directly into the sun though, or you’ll damage your eyesight. The bright side is a light filtered through the clouds, trees, buildings and people in the real world. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You have something on your mind, but you’re not “consumed” by this. Yours is a strong intention. This is better for you as it leaves room to work with what others want. Oblivious ambition is dangerous. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Some say you should master your thoughts to master your actions, but this isn’t always the order that works. Your thoughts can be feral and powerful as wild horses, but do things differently and your thoughts will calm down. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Circumstances don’t define you. Circumstances are opportunities. What defines you is always your reaction to these opportunities. Really good things can come out of less than ideal situations.
