Falloon sings new leader’s praises By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon is singing the praises of his former business associate Todd Muller as the Bay of Plenty MP takes the reins as National Party leader. Muller has wide name recognition in the agri-business community and has been a regular visitor to Mid Canterbury, although he has been far from a household name until this week. The 51-year-old family man rolled incumbent Simon Bridges in an emergency caucus meeting held yesterday, following two devastating poll results. Muller is a former executive assistant to then-Prime Minister Jim Bolger in the 1990s. He moved into the private sector and joined Fonterra in 2011 where he worked his way up to group director of co-operative affairs, leaving to become an MP in 2014. Falloon said he had known Muller since the new leader’s Fonterra days, when Falloon was involved in the Government’s response to the Whey Protein Concentrate incident. The incident in 2013 saw the Ministry for Primary Industries recall products sold by Fonterra

due to potential contamination. Falloon worked for Minister Steven Joyce at the time, so had to work closely with senior Fonterra executives. While not saying whether he voted for Bridges or Muller in the caucus meeting, Falloon is singing his new leader’s praises. While wishing Bridges and his wife Natalie well, and acknowledging the hard work and sacrifice the former leader had put into the leadership, Falloon said Todd came with “an excellent business pedigree and an extraordinary work ethic”. “In times of crisis he is cool, calm and collected, exactly what we need as we move to a longer term recovery and look to mend a shattered economy. “With Todd at the helm we can articulate that to all New Zealanders,” Falloon said. “He’s been a regular visitor to Mid Canterbury and has a strong affinity with our local urban and rural communities. “I’ve told Todd I’m willing to serve in any role he and our caucus determine, as well as continuing in my most important job of working hard for the people in Mid and South Canterbury.”

New leader will ‘turn polls around’ – John Hunt By Susan Sandys susan.s

John Hunt

Mid Canterbury National Party members have their hopes set on new leader Todd Muller for taking the party to victory in the 2020 General Election. Member John Hunt of Ashburton, a former Rangitata electorate executive member, said as good as Simon Bridges had been, the times had called for change. “It’s been quite an attack for

a very long time on Simon and quite unjustified in my opinion,” Hunt said. “To be blunt, if the media don’t like you, you are in trouble.” Hunt said Bridges had been incredibly hard working and very committed to a better New Zealand. “But look, it’s politics, and if the people of the day can’t resonate with him then the party has to do what the party has to do, and that same rule will apply to

Todd as well, it’s just politics.” Muller had been incredibly good as environment spokesperson and then more recently agriculture spokesperson, winning admiration for his work on the Zero Carbon Bill. “He will focus on what will be the benefit for the country as opposed to ‘I’m in the National Party’,” Hunt said. Hunt was happy for Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon in that he would have a new dynamic to

work with now, and happy for Muller in that he had Falloon as a committed MP in the Rangitata electorate. Under Bridges, Falloon had already been valued for his hard work and ability, and was being lined up for a Minister’s role if National got into government. He expected this would be the same under Muller. “I believe it (the new leader appointment) will turn the polls around,” Hunt said.

Aero club chasing i-SITE as new HQ By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

What was once an information hub for the Ashburton District could have a new life as a hub of a very different kind. The Mid Canterbury Aero Club has made a bid to win ownership of Ashburton’s i-SITE and if they’re successful, the building will be relocated from its East Street site to the Ashburton Airport where it will become the aero club’s headquarters. It’s the perfect use for a building that has always had a high public profile, club president Ian Begbie said. The building’s owner, the Ashburton District Council called tenders for the building earlier this year but the Covid-19 pandemic meant a decision on its new owner was delayed. Begbie is now waiting for a phone call with what he hopes will be positive news. With the club’s rooms well past their use-by date, the i-SITE building would be a perfect replacement, he said. If the aero club wins the tender, Begbie said the existing clubrooms would be demolished and the new building located on the same site. The location was critical as a clear view of the airfield was needed from the building and that could only be provided from one site, he said. It would be a relatively quick job to demolish the building, clear the site and prepare foundations for the new building, but relocating

The beleaguered I-SITE building in its current state on East Street. the building from its East Street site might come with a few challenges, he said. If the aero club wins the i-SITE building, the old clubrooms and its store of memories, will be farewelled in style with a short service. “It’s certainly got a lot of memories,” Begbie said. While the aero club had only

recently completed its new hangar facility and that meant funds were a little depleted, securing the i-SITE building was an opportunity that could not be passed up, he said. “We either pick it up and run with it or walk away.” The clubrooms were well used by more than local members as

PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

the airfield was a popular stopover and refuelling point for cross-country aviators. The addition of a new refuelling facility including the provision of Jet A1 fuel would only add to air traffic. Over the past 40 years the airfield had undergone huge development and its weakest link by far was its ageing clubrooms, Begbie

said. “Pilots and their passengers in transit use our clubrooms to refresh, check forward weather and gain area knowledge from our professional instructing staff. To be able to host them in a comfortable, presentable environment would be very nice.” The idea of bidding for the building came from club member Peter McQuarters who said with the council owning the airfield, it made absolute sense for the airport to become the i-SITE building’s new home. “Once I had come to terms with the fact that the old i-SITE was emphatically finished on its current location, the penny just dropped one day and I thought this would make an excellent replacement for the aero club’s ancient clubrooms which are really decades past their best use date,” he said. “The relocation of this great CBD building to the airport would really set the tone for the whole place.” When club members walked through the i-SITE it was apparent that the building was the perfect design for clubrooms that had to do double duty as flying instructors’ offices and briefing and lecture rooms, McQuarters said. Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach said the council was in discussions with two parties on the i-SITE’s future but could not indicate when a decision on this would be made.

Another serious crash at Bankside corner By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Members of the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade were once again called to a serious crash on State Highway 1 near Bankside on Thursday. The crash was reported at around 2.15pm, and Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Tyrone Burrowes said they were expecting the worst when

the call came through as a three vehicle crash between two cars and a truck. “We took the pump and the medical ute out as it came through as two cars and a truck, so we weren’t sure how many injured there were going to be, but it turns out the truck was barely involved as it was a crash between the two cars and one had just clipped the front bumper of the truck that had been

parked on the side of the road,” he said. One of the cars was on its side, but Burrowes said they were not required to cut anybody out of the vehicles, and assisted with providing first aid before helping out with traffic management. “Dunsandel (Volunteer Fire Brigade) were at the north end and we were at the south end,” he said. “Once more police arrived we

were stood down and went back once the Serious Crash Unit were finished to wash-down the road.” St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said one patient was taken to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter with serious injuries, and another two patients, one with moderate injuries and one with minor injuries, were take to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance.

The area has been a hot-spot for crashes in recent years, but Burrowes said he was unsure what it was about the area that made it so dangerous. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade had two call-outs on Thursday evening, the first being called to a small vegetation fire in the Wakanui area before being called to an alarm activation at RX Plastics around 20 minutes later.

Methven Resort still closed By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

The doors are closed at Methven Resort, but whether the lessees have shut up shop for good is unknown. The landmark hotel had been struggling following Covid-19 halting New Zealand’s international tourist trade relied upon by so many Methven businesses. Its landline has been disconnected, the booking form on its website reports an expired account, and on the hotel’s Booking.com page there is a notice saying the hotel is not taking reservations on the online booking website. Manager Ole Wallis confirmed the closure yesterday, but did not wish to comment further as to whether it was just temporary or otherwise, saying he would have information further down the track. In April last year Ole and his partner Bruce took over the lease of the hotel, which is owned by Maxim’s Fashions Limited. The complex, which opened as Centrepoint in 1982, is Methven’s largest hotel. It is valued as a grand social venue in the town, with a first-storey restaurant overlooking a large bar lounge and dance floor, accessed by a sweeping staircase. The Mount Hutt College ball is often held there, as well as local conferences and functions. Facilities include 47 guest rooms, bar, restaurant, swimming pool, hot pools, function and conference rooms.

The doors of the Methven Resort may be currently shut but its future fate is still unknown. PHOTO SUPPLIED It has had many owners over the years, including hotel chains such as Grand Chancellor and Sovereign. The hotel was steered back to stability by former French Farm Winery owners Mark Smith and Ann Tillson when they operated it for five years to 2013. They bought the then closed venue in

a mortgagee sale after its owner Dynasty Group failed to pay a long list of creditors. It has had various owners since, including North Canterbury couple Michael and Margaret D’Oliveira, who bought it from Smith and Tillson, and Max Yuan and his wife Joy Zhang.

Church services a no-go due to 10 limit sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

For ministers, priests, pastors, the past eight weeks have meant a virtual separation from the congregations they have committed to serve. Church doors have been closed and services have been Zoomed into homes from churches that could be at the opposite end of the country, while parish ministers, priests and pastors have quietly observed their faith in private religious celebrations. While New Zealand has now moved to Covid-19 Level 2, allowing church gatherings of up to 10 people, for all but the most remote and small congregations that continues to put church attendance off the calendar, says Ashburton’s Holy Name par-

ish priest Denis Nolan. He’s hopeful gathering numbers will be lifted to 100 on Monday, but he knows that may still not be high enough for services to resume in Ashburton. “It could well create more problems than it will solve,” he said. With Catholic faith immigrants pushing congregation numbers to an all-time high, Nolan said it was not unusual for services in Ashburton to have a congregation numbering well over 100. “It’s just hard to envisage how this would work with number limits and physical distancing. We’d have to have someone counting people in and what do you do when you reach 100 and there are still people wanting to attend. We’re not a walk-up

event, and we don’t issue invitations.” Many of his church members were becoming quite stressed because they were unable to attend mass, but it would be even more stressful for them to turn up at a service and find they couldn’t get in, he said. “We can’t really half do this, it’s either on or it’s not.” While he’s concerned about the issues that were likely to come with limiting church attendance to 100, Nolan said it would be great if services could resume on May 31 as this was Pentecost Sunday, marking the coming of the Holy Spirit, 40 days after Easter. “Fortunately it won’t be my call. It’s the Bishop’s call.”

Arrests made A police search warrant has resulted in the recovery of a stolen vehicle and the seizure of drugs. Overnight May 19, a vehicle was stolen from outside a car dealership in the Ashburton CBD. On Thursday, Police executed a search warrant at a rural property in Winchmore, Ashburton Sub-Area Supervisor Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said. “The stolen vehicle was recovered along with some drugs seized,” he said. “A male aged 27 years and a female aged 22 years were arrested. Both are before the court facing charges of receiving stolen property, possession of and cultivating cannabis along with some related utensil charges. “A third occupant of the address received a formal warning for possession of cannabis.”

Mt Hutt is in for a dusting of snow on Monday, while the Mid Canterbury plains will get some rain, says the MetService. Meteorologist Andrew James said a low-pressure system would move across the country from late Sunday, bringing the precipitation. However, significant precipitation may be only north of Christchurch. “There’s going to be rain, but the question is how far south that rain is going to reach,” James said. A pattern of cooler showery conditions would follow. This is likely to help Mt Hutt’s ground temperature dropping as it leads into cranking up snowmakers for opening on June 12.

206 Club on hold Age Concern Ashburton’s 206 Club is on hold as organisers await the government’s Monday announcement on the next stage of alert level guidelines. They had been hoping to get back this week, following being closed for lockdown, but a limit of 10 in social gatherings saw plans shelved. The Government will consider raising the maximum number allowed at gatherings under Level 2 at next week’s Cabinet discussion on Monday, with an announcement to be made shortly afterwards.

Trees removed Ashburton District Council continued work to remove potentially hazardous trees along the Methven Walkway on Thursday morning this week. Service delivery group manager Neil McCann said the trees included those which were dead or dying, or on dangerous leans. Aerial hazards of suspended branches were also attended to. A Methven community noticeboard post on Facebook suggested the walkway would be closed for the work, between the RDR and State Highway 77. However, McCann said it was completed in just under one hour, with no need to close the walkway as a stop/go approach was used. “This work was completed by professional bushmen that had been working at the Methven Cemetery,” McCann said.

River track assault enquiries ongoing By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward after a teenage girl was assaulted during the day on a popular walking and biking track in Ashburton. The assault took place close to the Ashburton River Track, near the Ashburton Dog Park located off William Street, on the afternoon of May 18. Detective senior sergeant Richard Quested said police are making enquiries into the incident, and at this stage are limited as to what information they can share. The incident was reported to police on Wednesday, and the Guardian understands a scene guard was put in place overnight Wednesday and that a scene examination was carried out on Thursday morning. “Our enquiries to date have not established a further risk to the public, however, we acknowledge incidents like this may cause concern in the community and we advise that anyone who sees anything suspicious or feels unsafe should call police immediately on 111,” Quested said. “Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police on 105 and request detective sergeant Colin Welsh, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.” The area where the assault took place will forever be linked with the murder of Ashburton teen Kirsty Bentley in the late 1990s, being an area she frequented when walking her dog, which was what she was said to be doing at the time of her disappearance. The area is where Kirsty’s dog and underwear was found by searchers the day after she disappeared.

■■MID CANTERBURY COUNTRY MUSIC CLUB

Online mini awards’ talent stunning By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

The talent on display at the Mid Canterbury Country Music Club’s inaugural Online Mini Awards 2020 was simply stunning, says vice-president Lana Doublet. About 40 performers entered and judges had a tough job to choose the winners. “It was amazing and the judges said it was so hard, there was literally a point in it in most cases,” Doublet said. Three judges presided in the vocal sections of junior, intermediate and senior, awarding a score out of 100, before the points were added to give the final score. Three separate judges known for their country song-writing talent presided in the original song category.

The competition was a oneoff, created during lockdown as country music singers did not have their usual award events to attend. But Doublet was not ruling out holding it again in future, due to its success. It was held via the club’s Facebook page, with entrants uploading a video of their performance, and Doublet announcing the results recently on Facebook live. Results were: Junior – winner Cailin Henderson, runner-up Lexus Hirst; Intermediate – winner Ocean Waitokia, runner-up Mya George and Josh Keating; Senior – winner Casey Dixon, runner-up Shelley Wyatt; Original Song – winner Shelley Wyatt, runner-up Zayde Blair; People’s Choice Award Winner Lexus Hirst.

New Zealand’s economy grinding to a sudden halt during lockdown affected some people more than others. Among the most vulnerable were migrants, and the Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network was among organisations at the forefront helping out. Co-ordinator Adi Avnit said he had supported about 25 people through targeted funding received from the Ministry of Social Development. Avnit said he was still able to provide support to migrants in need, and they were welcome to contact him. Based in Methven and the rest of Mid Cantebury, those he had helped so far were from countries including the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Fiji, Ireland, India, Jordan, Tonga, Philippines, Japan, USA, Nigeria and France. While the Ashburton District Council’s welfare team had been co-ordinating food parcels, he had focused on giving out supermarket vouchers for local stores including New World and Shop Nd Save in Ashburton, and SuperValue and Four Square in Methven. Temporary migrants, which were non-residents mostly on work visas, were not entitled for Work and Income support and could not simply change jobs as they needed a new work visa for every change of employment. “And as New Zealand Immigration has been shut down during the lockdown, they couldn’t get these new work visas. Therefore many who lost their jobs were struggling to pay for rent, food and bills,” Avnit said.

Adi Avnit He said he had received plenty of grateful feedback from those assisted, with comments including: “The voucher that you sent helped me a lot to buy my son’s everyday lunch while I am still jobless now that he is back to school” and “The food vouchers helped us a lot, I have been laid off three times in the past year and had to get temporary work with minimum wage. My partner is in the process of switching her work visa and isn’t allowed to work”. Avnit can be contacted at adi.avnit@safermidcanterbury.org.nz or phone/text 027 220 8791. He did however encourage migrants needing assistance to in the first instance contact the council’s welfare number, 0800 24 24 11.

You might retire but you never stop being a nurse After spending more than 32 years as a practice nurse at the Allenton Medical Centre, Marion Martin has opted for retirement. She talks to reporter Sue Newman about a career that started in 1973 when she was a 17-year-old school leaver. As a 17-year-old, Marion Martin started her nursing career at Ashburton Hospital; 47 years later she’s signed off as a practice nurse who was now caring for the grandchildren of her first patients. It’s been a long career with many high spots and very few lows, but finally, she says it’s time to retire and spend a little more time working alongside landscape gardener husband Roger and enjoying time with her children and grandchildren. A job that had become more administration based than face-to-face prompted thoughts of retirement; the arrival of Covid-19 sealed the deal, she said. There’s no turning back, her practising certificate runs out at the end of this year and it won’t be renewed. Retirement is for keeps. Thirty-two years ago when she began working as a practice nurse at Allenton Medical Centre the role was just in its infancy and that meant it came with nothing much in the way of a job description. Marion wrote that as she went.

Marion Martin, a familiar face to patients at the Allenton Medical Centre and Three Rivers Medical Centre, is heading for retirement. PHOTO SUE NEWMAN 00520-SN-0032 “I was determined I wasn’t going to be the doctor’s handmaiden and I know that lots of people thought this was what a practice nurse did, run after the doctor and sit around looking pretty. They don’t. I wonder what doctors did before practice nurses because today they’re indispensable.” She was less than two years into the job when husband Roger decided he wanted to open a garden centre to complement his landscape business. And he wanted Marion on staff. Reluctantly, she handed in her notice and swapped caring for people for caring for plants. “I loved the garden centre. Our interest had always been in horticulture, but I had a lot to learn. I spent all my time reading labels at the start,” she said. A few months down the track she received a phone call from the medical centre – please come back. That was September 1989 and for many years she would do double duty, balancing both patients and plants. In those days life in a medical centre was very different to the streamlined places most are today, Marion said. “Those were the days when general practice was about dealing with the sick, now it’s about keeping people well.” Many general practitioners were also obstetricians and she admits she misses the days when a practice knew a baby from bump to birth. She also saw the introduction of screening programmes and was one of the first nurses to train as a cervical smear taker. “This brought a real focus on women’s health into general practices and they were

becoming wellness centres too. I really enjoyed that,” she said. Over the years Marion has gone from being the sole practice nurse to being one of a team of eight, the medical centre itself has grown significantly from a small room in the corner of the Allenton Mall, to its larger replacement on the same site and finally, to the upmarket, high-tech Three Rivers Medical Centre on Allens Road. The move to Three Rivers brought a different way of working and huge changes in systems. Gone were the days of individual patient cards filed alphabetically. All patient data was computerised and nothing was left to chance. If a patient needed to be recalled there would be an automatic prompt and recalls became a larger part of her workload. Three Rivers uses a nurse triage system with patients. Marion applauds this but said it is a practice some older patients struggle with. “They want to see the doctor, and they want to see their doctor, but what they’re doing there is leading edge, it’s a centre for the future.” For GPs life has also changed dramatically over those years, not just in the way practices are so much more structured today, but also in the move away from a high focus on the house calls that were slotted in before and after surgery hours most days. The old style GP was rarely off duty. “One of the things that stood me in great stead was being a mum, a mum of toddlers, of twins, of teenagers and a grandma. It meant I could relate easily to people. It’s been wonderful being able to work alongside young mums and their babies, walking alongside women who are terrified of having their first smear.” As a school leaver, nursing was her first

career choice and it’s one she’s never regretted. And it’s a career she has spent little time away from. She was back at work 10 months after twins Laura and Kate were born and eight months after son Simon’s birth. Motherhood, however, did mean she could no longer work in the area that was her first love, surgical nursing. “My favourite was working in theatre, I loved surgical work and we did a huge variety of operations from appendectomies to bowel resections and a lot of orthopaedics, hip replacements too. Those surgeons were wonderful generalists. They were skilled men, but general surgeons no longer exist.” As a mum she became an evening district nurse, only returning to the wards after Simon started kindergarten. For Marion, the clock has gone full circle. She might have retired from nursing but she’s back in the garden, giving Roger a helping hand, but this time round she’s choosing when she works. But you don’t stop being a nurse, she said. “You’re a nurse for life and I’m extremely proud of being a New Zealand-trained nurse. We spread ourselves all over the world.” Her training years were very different to those experienced by today’s polytech trained nurses, Marion said. “We wore all white uniforms, starched caps and red capes. We were very handson. Today’s nurses coming through the polytech system are long on theory but that means they need to spend their first year after graduation learning to nurse. There are some wonderful young nurses today, but I think I had the best years of nursing,” she said.

Call to match Aust economic recovery RNZ The head of the Prime Minister’s Business Advisory Council says Australia is outstripping New Zealand on the economic comeback from Covid-19, and we need to assemble an ‘A team’ on the economy if we do not want to get left further behind. Fraser Whineray says while New Zealand is tracking well on medical matters, Australia is doing better managing both the health and economic fallout from the pandemic. He has written to Jacinda Ardern asking to establish a Recovery Taskforce and Reform Commission like the one Australia has set up, headed by a business leader with the same influence and access to the prime minister as the Director General of Health. “Normally in any incident management in a company, for example, you will have people focused on the triage … then the recovery and then if it’s a really significant shift, which this one is for the globe, then it’s longer term,” Whineray told Checkpoint. “That’s why the Business Advisory Council is promoting the recovery Task Force and Reform

Commission, each chaired by business people, kind of in a similar manner to what the Australian Covid commission is. “The Australians are a wonderfully confident bunch, it’s part of their culture, so when they see the likes of who’s in the Covid Commission, working very closely alongside the prime minister’s group there, that enthuses their confidence even further to make decisions of investment or hiring. “I want to make sure that our economic activity – $100 billion that’s about to be spent – if that goes into some really good things, because we have a strong recovery Task Force and Reform Commission.” Whineray said wellbeing is underpinned by the economy, so it is important it goes hand in hand with the health response. “Nailing Covid is one thing, but now it’s about looking forward, what’s the best team we can marshal for the recovery, with the best influence on a huge amount of expenditure and debt we’re going to bring on as a country. “The members of the Business Advisory Council would very much like to strongly support it. … that’s almost full-time, that’s what it would involve.” Whineray would not elaborate on his ideas for who could be on the commission, but said he is too busy to be one of the members. “We’ve absolutely got the talent in New Zealand, there’s no doubt

about that. We’re flush with talent … It’s about having a very significant mandate and presence to help influence decisions, as opposed to simply providing advice. “They have to be very passionate New Zealanders who are apolitical and have great ability to bring others with them. “Looking at the likes of the Australian set, they are very prominent business people who have a huge experience, that can bring a lot of the economy along. “I think wellbeing is more than

AirNZ axes three top executives NZME Air New Zealand chief executive Greg Foran has axed three top executives as the airline deals with fallout from Covid-19. Chief strategy networks and alliances officer Nick Judd will depart the airline on May 31 and chief air operations and people safety officer John Whittaker on July 31. Chief marketing and customer officer Mike Tod “will step away’’ from the airline full-time on May 31 and will provide advisory support to Foran and the board during the current business transformation phase, a release from Air NZ says. Between them they have nearly 70 years’ experience at the airline. “As we have done in all parts of our business, we are creating the structure that is appropriate for an airline which we expect will take two years to get back to 70 per cent of its former size. On that basis I have reduced the size of the executive team from nine to six,” Foran said.

Mortgage rates are continuing to tumble as another major bank cut its rate to a record low yesterday. ASB bank will offer 2.69 per cent over two years fixed on home loans from today, undercutting moves made by rival banks this week. It follows Westpac which Thursday cut its one year fixed term rate to 2.79 per cent, matching a move made by ANZ earlier in the week. Craig Sims, ASB executive general manager retail banking, said the reduced rate would be welcome news

He said the portfolios of the three departing executives will be absorbed by the remaining members of the executive team. “Nick, John and Mike have made an outstanding contribution to the airline with a combined 68 years of service at Air New Zealand.’’ “They will leave at a time where our customer satisfaction scores are at all-time highs, we are seen to lead the way with culture and people safety in aviation, our brand health is the best it has been and our corporate reputation is number one in Australia for the third year running and number one in New Zealand for the sixth consecutive year,” Foran said. Foran – who started in the top job in early February – said they had “been incredibly helpful’’ to him as he settled into his role and their deep experience has been vital as the airline navigated through a most tumultuous past 100 days. “As with the current 30 per cent workforce reduction, these three changes are equally difficult Mike,

John and Nick are going to be deeply missed and they have interacted with thousands of our Air New Zealand whanau, near and wide over many years.’’ In April Foran appointed an airline outsider, former Spark and ICI chemical HR boss Joe McCollum to replace Jodie King who is leaving the airline to go to Vodafone. This week it was announced that 1300 cabin crew jobs had gone. Already 300 jet pilots have been laid off and a final number of regional pilot jobs going is imminent. When the magnitude of the crisis became clear in March, the airline said up to 3500 staff could lose their jobs. There is little prospect of long haul international flying until some time next year although more trans-Tasman services could be restored within months if the health picture in New Zealand and Australia allows. The airline is steadily restoring domestic services as internal leisure travel is allowed.

a Covid statistic, and the economy isn’t just a thing the Reserve Bank governor talks about. Economies are jobs, it’s providing for family, it’s having comfortable retirements, and it’s paying for new cancer drugs. “And the bottom line is if the income for a government is provided by taxes on the economy, and if the economy isn’t strong then the government taxes go down. And at some point, you can’t keep borrowing from the bank. “That is actually how the money goes around, so we do actually need good economic activity, good long-term investments that suit where we want to take New Zealand. And by doing so, ensure that we have plenty of tax revenue to provide the wonderful goods and public services that we need. “It’s not actually about health versus economy. We can go to another 160 countries around the world which are poorer than New Zealand, and we can see what weaker economies do for people’s wellbeing.” Whineray said the taskforce needs to be working in a matter of weeks, if New Zealand wants to keep up with Australia’s economic recovery.

for many home owners and first home buyers. Sims said it had been an incredibly challenging period for a lot of its customers and that it had been encouraging to see the country start to re-open and New Zealanders return to work. ASB has cut its rates by between 20 and 34 basis points for terms between six months and four years. The fresh round of home loan rate reductions follows Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Geoff Bascand’s comments on Monday that the central bank’s bond buying

efforts had so far been effective in reducing wholesale interest rates, but that they were not translating quickly enough into lower mortgage rates. Westpac’s new rates, available from Monday, will drop fixed home loan rates drop from the current 3.05 per cent. Its two-year fixed home loan rate will also drop to 2.79 per cent from 2.99 per cent. On Wednesday, Ben Kelleher, ANZ managing director retail and business banking, said the new rates put more money in the pockets of customers.

Virus breakthroughs Two testing breakthroughs were unveiled this week to dramatically boost hopes of getting the UK moving. British Health Secretary Matt Hancock revealed ministers are trialling an on-the-spot test to tell patients if they have the virus in just 20 minutes – up from the current average of two days. This would let them return to work the same day if they were negative rather than self-isolating just in case while they awaited results. If deemed effective, it will be rolled out nationally within six weeks. Hancock also announced the launch of 10 million antibody tests from next week to tell patients if they have already had the virus. These fingerprick blood tests – with results coming back the same day – could enable tens of thousands to return to work confident they have built up some immunity. Hancock eventually hopes to develop a certification system based on positive antibody results to tell people how they can safely go about their lives. Separately, he outlined preliminary findings from research involving antibody tests which suggest five per cent of people nationally, and 17 per cent in London, have already had the virus. Hancock eventually wants to develop a certificate system based on antibody test results which would inform people how to safely go about their lives. This could allow an elderly patient with a positive result to go to hospital for hip surgery, in the knowledge that they were highly unlikely to catch the virus on the ward. Equally a doctor or nurse with a positive result could be redeployed to virus wards as they would also be at very low risk. Announcing the antibody

Drake apologises for lyrics Rapper Drake has apologised after an old song that resurfaced called Kylie Jenner a ‘side piece’. A ‘side piece’ is a slang word for a mistress, and is used to describe someone who is having an affair on the side. The rapper brags in the song: “Kylie Jenner that’s a side piece / Yeah, I got 20 motherf...... in’ Kylies”. The unreleased track also makes crude references to Kylie’s sister Kendall Jenner and model Gigi Hadid.

test rollout at the Downing Street press conference yesterday, Hancock said: “It’s not just about the clinical advances that these tests can bring. “It’s that knowing you have these antibodies will help us to understand more in the future if you are at lower risk of catching coronavirus, of dying from coronavirus and of transmitting coronavirus. “We’re developing this critical science to know the impact of a positive antibody test and to develop the systems of certi-

fication to ensure people who have positive antibodies can be given assurances of what they can safely do.” The NHS Confederation, which represents organisations across the healthcare sector, said: “This could be a game changer – and it is great that we now have a reliable antibody test. “As the Government acknowledges, of course, there are still unknowns. We don’t yet know whether antibodies mean you are immune.”

Earlier the Prime Minister’s spokesman said the tests would be “free for people who need them, as you would expect”. The Department of Health hopes to carry out 40,000 antibody tests a week although they will initially be performed in hospitals rather than at home. They will initially be offered to NHS staff and care workers but some patients will be able to request them via their doctors.

Church burns after pastor files lawsuit A church in the US state of Mississippi was destroyed in a suspected arson, about a month after its pastor filed a lawsuit challenging the city of Holly Springs on gathering restrictions amid the coronavirus outbreak. First Pentecostal Church in Holly Springs burned down on Wednesday. When investigators from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office got to the scene, they found graffiti in the church parking lot that read: “Bet you stay home now you hypokrites”. “We’ve kind of racked our

brains and we have no idea,” Jerry Waldrop, the pastor of the church, said. “No enemies that we know of. “We don’t know anyone that we even think could be capable of doing something like this.” Waldrop filed a lawsuit against the city of Holly Springs last month, alleging police officers had disrupted a church Bible study and Easter service. Holly Springs City Attorney Shirley Byers said nearly 40 worshippers inside the church building were not practising social distancing on April 10

when a violation citation was issued for the church. Churchgoers practised social distancing while indoors and only held indoor services when bad weather would not allow them to gather outside, the lawsuit said. Waldrop’s complaint also asked for a temporary restraining order to keep city officials from preventing church services. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves spoke out on Wednesday against the attack, asking: “What is this pandemic doing to us?” Reeves’ safer-at-home order,

which is set to expire Monday, allows churches to operate as essential businesses, but it limits the size of indoor gatherings. The Republican governor has also asked pastors to follow public health recommendations on social distancing and other practices to mitigate the spread of the virus. Reeves issued guidelines this week for places of worship to restart services inside their buildings. Byers said the city amended its local order in late April to allow for drive-thru church services.

Loughlin going to jail Full House actor Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, agreed to serve prison time as part of a plea deal in the college admissions bribery case. Loughlin, 55, has agreed to serve two months behind bars and Giannulli, 56, has agreed to serve five months under the deal that must be approved by the judge. The famous couple was scheduled to go to trial in October on charges that they paid $500,000 in bribes to get their two daughters into the University of Southern California as crew team recruits, even though neither of them played the sport.

No time to Muller it over A

s far as introductions goes, Todd Muller’s first role as National Party leader yesterday was pretty much on point. Not even two hours into the role, after usurping Simon Bridges for the job, Muller faced up to the media scrum at Parliament. The moment was his. How he approached it, delivered it and ultimately came across to the public of New Zealand would determine if he began his tenure on the front foot, or took a step back even further than Bridges had done over the past few months. For many it would seem, he attacked in the right manner. There’s something about Muller that screams the National Party of old. Cut from a cloth that seems keen on distancing from controversy at every turn and focused on getting the job done. Whether that will be enough come election time later this year, who knows? But if he continues in the same stature and manner as yesterday’s maiden speech, then the race to the top of the Beehive just got a whole lot more interesting. What stood out from Muller’s speech was his eagerness to speak to people and not over them – to connect and give them a familiarity that they can relate to. It’s an approach Jacinda Ardern is regarded for – case in point her message around the Easter Bunny to children during the lockdown. That kind of comment might seem a little off the mark for a serious politician to be making, but satisfaction levels with people seem to increase the more they are introduced by politicians. But talk is one thing and judging by polls out this week, the work is only just beginning for a beleaguered party who will need to dig deeper than it has ever before to even get close to making the election a two-horse race. Maybe Muller is the right man for that job after all.

he first reply was a picture of a young girl running on a dark sand beach in the late afternoon sun. The tide has retreated into the bay, promising to return at some later time; clouds like cobwebs hang in an endless blue void. In the distance, a boulder breakwater shines against the hazy line of the horizon. It is Pohara Beach, in Golden Bay, where I am lucky enough to holiday with family. The tweet reads, “You know the reason.” It ends with a loveheart. It was May 4, which feels like a year ago or yesterday depending on your perspective. In the current phrasing we, as a country, were a week into Level 3 of the Government’s Covid-19 response. There was some hope that soon we would be able to get back on track, or at least get our children out of the house. But there was also a distinct funk. You could feel it, although it would be foolhardy to attempt to articulate it for all. For me, it was this: I felt disconnected, cut-off, marooned. I was sure that, like me, others pined for a little piece of New Zealand – a drive, a dive, a hike, a bike, a walk, a swim, a trek, a trip, a run in the hills – and I wondered where that might be and why. And so, I sent a tweet: “What is the first NZ destination you will go to when you can? Post a pic and a reason.” I didn’t expect too much by way of response – one should never expect too much on such a platform – but then something lovely happened, something really lovely that confirmed what I already knew about the vast majority of

The world famous in New Zealand Wanaka tree. us who call Aotearoa home: we feel deeply, utterly helplessly, head-over-heels connected to it. After that shot of Pohara came another: the Wanaka tree sitting there in that dark, cold lake as if to say, this is completely normal tree behaviour. The message said, “because they need it”. “They”, I assumed, referred to the many small businesses slowly being crushed by the absence of visitors and customers. There was a sunrise on a frosty morning in Ohakune with a plea for the snow to return and the skifields to open, and then there was a half-munched bacon butty sitting on a Formica table top at The Running Duck in Geraldine. The boat was calling Duncan to the harbour at Raglan, and Waiheke’s wineries were wooing Julia to the island. Mark just wanted to get back to Addington Stadium, where he hoped the Highlanders would defeat the Crusaders. Ben

wanted to go there, too, to see the Crusaders win instead. Kimberlee posted a shot of Mt Taranaki taken from a plane, it’s cone dusted in early season snow, puffy clouds clinging to its flanks. “Home”, is all she said. There were places I knew well. One of the benefits of having travelled New Zealand following sport – maybe the key benefit – was that I got to places I may never have got to had my career gone down some other path. I can still remember the day a flight between Christchurch and Dunedin was cancelled and we had to drive instead, making it to the commentary box about two minutes before kick-off. Afterwards I realised I had managed to cover the entire length of State Highway 1. I wondered then, and still do, how many other people have been fortunate enough to do that. Of course, so much of the joy is not found on the highway, but

off it. I was sent photos of the driftwood piled on the rocks of the Wairarapa Coast, and Opito Bay shimmering on a calm and spotless autumn day. There was Lake Hawea stretching out below the tussock hills, and Napier’s shoreline through a beachfront window; a rainbow arcing over the orange brick bleachers of the Basin Reserve, and a kayak at rest under the pohutukawa, on the sand at Awhitu. Rob wanted the ducks to come back to the pond at Piako Swamp, so he could hide in the maimai and unleash lead. Joy dreamed of getting back to the farm at Maungatapere. My dad was born there. That made me smile. My feed filled up with beautiful photographs but, more importantly, it became an outlet for the emotional connection we have to our places. Taumutu, Waihora, Manapouri, Akitio, Ohinemutu, Glenorchy, Otorohanga, Coromandel, Castlepoint, Maketu – each fresh tweet revealed something about the author: They missed their feet in the sand, or their feet on the land. They missed the feeling of sun-drying after a salty swim, or the thrill of the blood flowing back to the skin after a plunge in a South Island river. They missed the privilege of fishing off the coast, or meeting their friends at their favourite pub. rs Roffey, Percy, Mrs McDonald, Winston, Mandella, Rocky, Bowser and Mitch. These are some of the members of the feline species who have graced the Mac household over many decades. Some have been with us for a brief time, some have lived to a graceful old age, a couple have met with tragedy. Each are storied and were loved. Each had their own personalities. Several had the devaluation of our furniture and our property as amongst their principal interests. There is insufficient space here to meet them all, but let’s begin with Percy. I have no idea how we came by that name but it must have sounded good at the time. It was the early 80s and even floral drapes and loud wallpaper were fashionable back then so, in that context, a cat called Percy was quite normal. Probably. Percy was a large, heavy marmalade tom and immediately captured the heart of our neighbour, Mrs P, in Timaru, who was amongst the elite of the local cat fanciers association. She persisted in her request to borrow said cat and exhibit him in the local annual show. Not having any hang-ups around exploitation and objectification of our moggy on the cat walk, we didn’t take much convincing. In seemingly no time, he was back in our comfy first home environment, resplendent with his abundant awards and ribbons he’d hoovered up with ease. Mrs P certainly knew a good tom when she saw one! Percy went to stay with my mum and dad when we went away once and that was that. They loved him but somewhere along the way their version went along the lines of “you never came back for him”. And my version was, “you said you wanted to keep him”. Whatever, he was loved and used to wait at the gate to greet my dad at 1am, 2am or 3am in the morning as he arrived home after a gig.

PETE’S PERSPECTIVE

When he eventually passed away at a ripe old age, my dad took it deeply. He never wanted to give that cat back. They were great mates. But it supplied plenty of material for a cheeky dig for years afterwards. Winston and Mandella were lovely kittens but their time with us was short-lived. Winston mysteriously just dropped dead in front of our kitchen window and Mandella was probably the first kitten that Mrs Mac had a real fondness for. He never left the property until one day, with family and friends gathered across the road to watch the DC-3 operating from the airfield, Mandella crossed the road for a look as well. Right into the path of an oncoming car. And that was that. Our youngest son declared he’d been taken by Dunlops disease. And then there was Rocky, the South Island’s first gay theatre cat. I’m not being judgemental here, but he exhibited quite overt camp tendencies. He was a very friendly, longhaired tabby who used to be our front-of-house manager out at Aeroview. In charge of meet and greet. His signature was to sit with one bent limp front paw hanging in the air. A very ‘ducky’ pussy. And then came Bowser. How did you name

him that I hear? We went fossicking for an old petrol bowser on a farm and came home with a long-haired british blue instead. This cat was the real deal, a veritable prince amongst the breed. He was as passive as a pavlova, until you rubbed his belly, at which point he would tear your arm off. He would go absolutely ape. We tended not to do that and spent considerable time warning others not to after he had initially taken them in with his intoxi-cat-ing charm. He went missing twice, once for weeks when he mysteriously turned up in town at Mitre 10 Mega. Someone must have picked him up and taken him for a ride ‘cos he never left the property. His disappearance perplexed us for weeks, but after a custody battle, when another person thought he was theirs, we finally let a vet decide. How old was your cat? “Two.” Bowser was around nine, so without bias we simply asked a vet to estimate the age of the cat. He was a lot closer to nine than two. Phew. In fact, “Meow”. Two years after that he disappeared again and this time had us stumped for more than a year. Where could Bowser be?

Missed paper Call 0800 ASHBURTON 0800 274 287 All was revealed when Mrs Mac was having a clean-up of a large, dense bush about two metres away from where she slept. Bowser had curled up and died right outside our bedroom window. Our latest, Mitch, from my former boss’s place on Mitcham Road, has turned out to be a girl. Mitchelle now I guess. Totally adorable but a mistress of hiding. Her most recent antic was finding her way into and behind the tightly confined lower plastic grille of our Holden Trax. Pleading desperate eyes and meows from Al-cat-raz. There seemed no way out. I made another cup of tea and studied YouTube tutorials on how to remove the myriad of screws, clips and bolts needed to disassemble her prison. Twenty minutes later, she appeared on our bed, covered in grease and oil. Won’t do that again. Broadcaster Peter Mac is Ashburton born and bred and the afternoon host on the Hokonui Radio Network. O

n behalf of the board and staff of the Ashburton Licensing Trust I would like to say a big thank you to those providing essential services over Alert Level 4 especially the Ashburton Guardian and Radio Network who were based in Somerset House. Both have played a vital role in keeping the Mid Canterbury public informed while we worked to eliminate the

Covid-19 virus. The Ashburton Trust has leased out the Hotel Ashburton, Tinwald Tavern complex and Speight’s Alehouse. We continue to own and operate the Devon Tavern. It is income derived from these properties that funds our annual grant pool. Somerset Ashburton Ltd is a charitable company set up by the Ashburton Trust to ensure the flow of charitable

funds to the Mid Canterbury community into the future. Somerset Ashburton Ltd owns Somerset House and it’s the rental income derived from this building which will be distributed to the local community in the years ahead. Local businesses haven’t been immune to the impact of Covid-19 and as we now move into Alert Level 2 and the opportunity arises to get out and about, now more

than ever our local businesses deserve your support. All of the businesses advertised over the next few pages play an important role in our community, they employ local staff, purchase products and services from local businesses and through operating from Ashburton Trust and Somerset House premises they are contributing to the grants we make to the local community.

SAFETY PARAMOUNT The use of saliva to shine the ball is set to be outlawed by the ICC following Covid-19 concerns.

By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury Cricket is unmoved in response to a bid by the sport’s global administrators for a law overhaul. The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) cricket committee has recommended on medical advice that spit-polishing the ball should be prohibited while the coronavirus outbreak persists. The decision was based on evi-

dence from the chair of the ICC’s medical advisory committee Dr Peter Harcourt around “the elevated risk of the transmission of the virus through saliva.” Head of the cricket committee Anil Kumble said the recommendations, which included using sweat to shine the ball and not saliva, were “interim measures” for the safe resumption of play. “We are living through extraordinary times and the recommen-

dations the committee have made today are interim measures to enable us to safely resume cricket in a way that preserves the essence of our game whilst protecting everyone involved,” he said. Mid Canterbury Cricket Association (MCCA) manager Mark Medlicott said the health of the community needed to take precedence. “You can say it might be over the top, but then you read about

Sweden and how that’s gone haywire,” he said. “At the end of the day we just want everyone to play our sport safely. “If that means changing that (law) then that’s fine.” He added that the laws of the game had constantly evolved over the years. “Even Bodyline way back,” he said. “Everything changes.

“You just have to adapt.” Medlicott believed it was more natural regardless to use sweat, given that most cricket was played in hot temperatures. “At the end of the day, you want to play,” he said. Calls have been made by former and current players to sanction the use of an artificial substance to shine the ball, including Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins.

■■ NETBALL

Trio owning umpiring challenges By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A trio of up and coming netball officials from Ashburton say umpiring has benefited them as players. High school pupils Gianna Butler, Ashlein Lyttle and Olivia Pearce last week continued their development as netball adjudicators when they passed the Netball New Zealand (NNZ) Zone Theory exam. It is the final assessment before they are put to the test in a practical setting. All three have volunteered with the whistle for the past few years and have reaped the rewards as players. “It has given me a better understanding of the rules and how the game should flow,” Pearce said. The teens are also keen players with Lyttle a Mid Canterbury age group representative. Lyttle said it provided fresh perspectives having done both roles. “Thinking about if that was me who was the umpire,” she said. “I think it’s definitely helped my play also because you get to learn the ins and outs and the niggly little rules you didn’t know before,” Butler said.

Gianna Butler Butler said there was a demand to be decisive and strong-willed when managing a high octane game of netball. “You have to stick to what you’ve called, even if the players argue with you.” You have to be hard-working and willing to learn,” Pearce said.

Ashlein Lyttle Observing how the professionals adjudicate games at the top level had also been a worthwhile routine, Lyttle said. “You get different hints and tips when you see those professionals do a proper game,” she said. The group now have the knowledge base to go along with these

qualities they have harnessed during competitive netball games which are set to return next month. Pearce also urged locals who were interested to give it a go. “We are always in need of more umpires, the coaches are lovely and are always willing to help.”

Olivia Pearce The crossover between both jobs seemingly becomes more fixed higher up the grades. It is a prerequisite for all Mid Canterbury players from premier down to senior to fill in as umpire if required meaning all players in these grades need to complete the NNZ theory assessment.

Netballers set to get back on court Four weeks out from the opening whistle, the revised 2020 ANZ Premiership schedule has been announced. New Zealand’s elite netballers will battle it out throughout an action-packed 10-week season with matches played every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, all broadcast live on Sky Sport 3. The season is closed to the public, with all fixtures played at Auckland Netball Centre to ensure all Ministry of Health and Worksafe NZ Covid-19 requirements are met within a controlled environment. The Robinhood Northern Stars, Northern Mystics and Splice Construction Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic will all commute by road, while chartered flights have been scheduled for Te Wananga o Raukawa Pulse, The Good Oil Tactix and Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel to allow for safe and controlled travel. The season culminates with a triple-header Finals Series on Sunday August 23, with matchups to be determined by standings at the conclusion of round robin play. Teams placed first and second on the competition ladder will meet in the Grand Final, following 3rd/4th and 5th/6th classification matches. Netball New Zealand chief executive Jennie Wyllie said despite the forced changes, it was exciting to see the ANZ Premiership returning to action. “While the situation is not ide-

al, it has also allowed for ingenuity and innovation around how we continue to present matches as a vibrant spectacle and maintain maximum engagement with fans and viewers,” she said. “Players are excited about getting back on court and are able to do so thanks to a wide-ranging support base including ANZ, Sky, Premiership and team partners as well as other contractors.” ANZ Head of Sponsorship Sue McGregor said that it was a great step forward for netball fans to be able to watch the ANZ

Premiership again in 2020. “We are thrilled to see the ANZ Premiership back on court in 2020. “It’s a really positive move forward for us all and we hope it won’t be too long before the grassroots game can safely follow suit,” she said. “We know that the fans are desperate to get playing again as we have seen through the applications received for the ANZ Good Sports Grants launched on Monday where we made $1m available to help netball and cricket clubs

get back up and running.” Sky’s Chief Content Officer Tex Teixeira said it was exciting to bring live netball back to fans through Sky Sport and Sky Sport Now. “Sport is definitely getting back up and we are excited netball is one of the first. “We’re so looking forward to getting courtside from Friday June 19 to broadcast every match on Sky Sport and stream on Sky Sport Now. “We’re working hard to put together some great offers for fans,

and will share the details as soon as we can,” he said. Sky’s live coverage will be complemented with one delayed match free-to-air at 6.30pm every Sunday on Prime. Action gets under way at 7pm on Friday, June 19 with the Splice Construction Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic going up against the Northern Mystics. Results from Round 1 games played in March will stand, with the competition resuming under the new schedule from Round 2 onward.

Asano on a title hunt

Leading apprentice jockey Kozzi Asano has experienced a break-out season and he can’t wait for it to resume in July. The Canterbury hoop is just six wins shy of premiership leader Lisa Allpress and he is looking forward to chasing her down. “We will see how the first race meeting goes after Covid-19,” Asano said. “I am definitely looking forward to trying to close the gap.” Asano led the premiership for the majority of the season and he admitted to being a bit jaded prior to the Covid-19 enforced lockdown. “I was quite tired before the lockdown,” he said. “Mentally and physically I was tired from all the travelling and riding.” Asano said he feels rested after the lockdown, but admitted he lost plenty of fitness over the six-week period. “I stayed home all the time, watching racing and working on my car, and doing housework during the lockdown. “It was quite relaxing,” he said. “I missed riding. While in lockdown I lost a lot of muscle and fitness, so I am working hard to get that back. “When I started riding trackwork again my body was very sore, but now I am getting better and better.” With still over a month to go before racing resumes, Asano said he is using the time

wisely to build his fitness and study form. “It is a good time to study form and get my fitness back. I am really happy with where I am at now.” With 75 wins to his name this term, including two stakes victories, Asano said he couldn’t have dreamed this season would have gone so well. “I never expected this. I am really thankful for all the owners and trainers who put me on their horses,” he said. “The highlight of the season has been the Wanganui Cup (Listed, 2040m) on Sentimental Miss. It was very helpful that Lisa (Latta, trainer) put me on. “It’s no doubt that without her helping with my northern rides, I couldn’t be in the position I am. So that is much appreciated.” Asano was also full of praise for his employer, Riccarton trainer Andrew Carston. “Not only does he look after me with riding, but also during work and my lifestyle, which is very rare to get. I just can’t thank him enough,” Asano said. Asano is already looking forward to next season and has been busy preparing for the challenge, both physically and mentally. “Next season will be harder and tougher, so I am preparing my mindset and hopefully I can hang onto it,” he said. “I would like to travel and ride as much as I can. Hopefully I can be successful for the owners and trainers.” Kozzi Asano is using his time wisely as everyone waits for racing to resume.

hold showed the class of the gelding, who shaped as a potential Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) candidate before a life-threatening trackwork injury intervened. “It was just a routine piece of track work,” Laurie said. “He suffered a spiral fracture in a front leg and had some major surgery with a steel plate and 12 screws inserted. “We were fortunate he was able to be saved.” Alfa Oro missed his entire three-year-old season and after a 20-month absence from racing

ridden him on the last four occasions. “I think he is very professional and happy to gallop along in front,” Laurie said. “He seems to be a horse that just gets into the zone and we feel he will handle the Flemington straight. “You never can be too confident, but he comes into it in the right frame of mind and he is racing particularly well. “We’ve missed out on his threeyear-old racing and now we’ve just got an opportunity to take him through his grades.

“I’d love to have an opportunity to race him in some smart races but he has got a 72 rating so I just have to try and place him well and build up his rating.” Laurie went to $240,000 to secure Alfa Oro, a half-brother to multiple Group Three winner Home By Midnight (who raced as Five To Midnight in New Zealand) from the draft of Regal Farm at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstocks Ready to Run Sale. “I didn’t want to pay that much, but I really liked the horse,” Laurie said.

■■RUGBY

Read eyes up Mitre 10 Cup Former All Blacks captain Kieran Read has revealed that he is keen to play in the Mitre 10 Cup, saying the country’s top players being back in provincial rugby would be “exciting for the game”. Read, who is contracted with Toyoya Verblitz in Japan until 2021, is back in New Zealand to be with his family in Christchurch following the suspension of the Japanese Top League because of the coronavirus pandemic. While Read, like many players in New Zealand, has been left pondering if he would end up seeing out his contract overseas, he has indicated his interest in playing in this season’s Mitre 10 Cup, which is due to start on September 11. “I would [be interested],” Read said. “It’s a possibility. There needs to be a few things to happen. “I think it’s just exciting if the All Blacks are back playing in that competition. “I remember that’s what it was like when I was younger watching the games on the hill at Pukekohe. “All the All Blacks were playing so you got to see a lot of legends of the game playing in that form

of footy. It’s exciting for the game. Hopefully that gets going. “And we’ll just have to wait and see if I’m there or not.” The 34-year-old No. 8 retired as All Blacks captain after last year’s Rugby World Cup to take up a contract in Japan. He has since been succeeded by former teammate Sam Cane, a man Read believes will do a great job in his former role. “It’s massive news for him,” Read said. “I’m pretty excited. He’s a good young man. “He’s actually been involved with us – in terms of our leadership group – for a number of years in the All Blacks. “Even before the 2015 World Cup he was in there. “He’s been earmarked for a wee while. “And I guess in the last couple of years, he’s been a great help to me. He’s really grown into his voice. “For him, just being himself and pushing the team forward, I think he’s going to do a great job.” Read was aligned with Counties Manukau when he was last contracted with NZ Rugby. Kieran Read turned out for Toyota Verblitz in Japan.

Pippen joins growing list of Last Dance detractors NBA great Horace Grant isn’t the only former team-mate of Michael Jordan who is absolutely filthy with how he was portrayed in The Last Dance documentary. You can add Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen to that list too. According to David Kaplan of ESPN Radio in Chicago, Pippen, who won six NBA championships with Jordan and the Chicago Bulls during the 1990s, is “so angry” and “beyond livid” at his team-mate for how he came across in the 10part ESPN-Netflix documentary. Pippen’s unhappiness derives from Jordan calling him “selfish” and that he “didn’t realise what he was getting himself into” during the series, Fox News reports. “[Pippen] felt like up until the last few minutes of Game 6 against the Jazz [in the 1998 NBA Finals], it was just ‘bash Scottie, bash Scottie, bash Scottie,’” Kaplan said. ESPN this week also reported Pippen has been left “wounded” and “disappointed” by his portrayal in the series, despite Jordan declaring Pippen was the greatest team-mate he ever had. Pippen was a central character in the early episodes of the series with his contract stand-off with Bulls management featuring prominently as one of the reasons the defending champions got off to such a disastrous start to the 1997-98 NBA season. With Jordan reportedly earning more than the rest of his 14 teammates combined heading into the team’s final championship season – Pippen took the biggest hit in the hip pocket. His salary of $2,775,000 was dwarfed by Jordan’s stunning $33,140,000 annual wages – despite Pippen widely established as one of the best five players in the NBA at the time. Pippen was entering the final season of a seven-year, $18 million deal he inked all the way back

in 1991. It was a contract even Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf labelled as a mistake, and told Pippen as much. His frustration with his contract boiled over entering the 1997/98 season as Pippen elected to have surgery that would sideline him and not see him take the court until January and without him in the line-up, the Bulls struggled in the early going of the season. Jordan’s criticism of Pippen’s “selfish” decision in the documentary has not sat well with his former right hand man, according to the ESPN report. Pippen has also gone dark on social media since the series first aired last month, not posting or commenting on his official Twitter account since April 15. Pippen’s frustrations have emerged just days after teammate Grant accused Jordan of being a “damn snitch” over claims made in the documentary. Grant says Jordan flat out told lies, accusing his former teammate of being the source behind a revealing book on Chicago’s first championship. Reporter Sam Smith’s The Jordan Rules book was released in 1992 and shared behind the scenes details of the team’s run to their first NBA title in 1991 and showed off a side of Jordan the world hadn’t seen before. Jordan turned from icon to villain in the eyes of many after the book hit the shelves, leaving the Chicago star unhappy with what had been brought to light. But after so many years just who spoke to Smith remained a point of contention, Jordan believes it was Grant who was in Smith’s ear. “I didn’t contribute to that,” Jordan said during The Last Dance. “That was Horace. “He was telling everything that was happening within the group.” Grant, who has long denied he

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen in happier days with the Bulls. was the one feeding behind the scenes information to Smith, unloaded over the latest allegations levelled at him during an interview with ESPN Radio in Chicago and took a shot at the docu-series that has taken the world by storm. “That is a downright, outright, completely lie. “Lie, lie, lie. And as I stated, if MJ had a grudge with me, let’s settle it like men. “Let’s talk about it, or we can

settle it another way. “Yet and still, he puts out this lie that I was the source behind it. “Sam and I have always been great friends, we’re still great friends. But the sanctity of that locker room, I would never put anything personal out there. “The mere fact that Sam Smith was an investigative reporter, that he had to have two sources – two – to write a book. “Why would MJ just point me

out? It’s only a grudge man, and I think he proved that during the so-called documentary. “If you say something about him, he’s gonna cut you off, he’s gonna try to destroy your character. “I mean, Charles Barkley, they’ve been friends for 30 years, and he said something about Michael’s management with the Charlotte Bobcats or Charlotte Hornets, and they haven’t spoken since then. “My point is, he says I was the snitch, but still after 35 years he brings up his rookie year, going into one of his teammate’s rooms and seeing coke and weed and women. “My point is, why did he want to bring that up? If you want to call somebody a snitch, that’s a damn snitch right there.” Grant added that if you say something about Jordan, “he’s going to try to destroy your character.” Grant also confirmed a story from Smith earlier this month. Smith told KNBR that Jordan took Grant’s food away when the forward had a bad game. Grant said he didn’t take it lightly. “Anybody [who] knows me, as a rookie, if anybody comes up and tries to snatch my food away, I’m going to do my best to beat their a***,” he said. “And believe me, back then, I could have took MJ in a heartbeat. “I said some choice words that I won’t repeat here. “But I said some choice words and stood up. ‘If you want it, you come and get it’. “And of course, he didn’t move. “He was just barking. But that was the story. “But anybody [who] knows me, where I come from and what I stand for, come on, man. “There’s nobody in this Earth would ever come and try to take food off my plate and not get their rear ends beaten.”

Briggs ‘confirms’ fight with Tyson Former world heavyweight boxing champion Shannon Briggs (right) claims Mike Tyson has agreed to fight him. Former undisputed champion, Tyson has been back in training for some time working towards a return to the ring in a charity bout. 53 year old Tyson had been offered a million dollars to fight a former rugby league player in Australia, with Sonny Bill Williams one of those mentioned. Evander Holyfield was reportedly also interested, but it appears two time world champion Briggs has landed a deal.

48-year-old Briggs made this announcement on Instagram. “I just talked to Mike Tyson, it’s going down, me and Mike. We’re going to make it happen, it’s official.” “You’re going to see it happen. Brownsville versus Brownsville. Me and Tyson are going to lace up the gloves, we’re going to rumble, rumble in the jungle. We’re going to let our fists do the talking!” Briggs last fought in 2016 and has a career record of 60 wins from 68 fights. Nicknamed The Cannon, Briggs had noteable wins over George Foreman and Ray Mercer.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’re different from the others, so it naturally follows that you’ll ask different questions and have novel interactions. You’re memorable and will be adored for this. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): If you had to choose between being in an endless state of selfsatisfaction or continual self-improvement that never quite arrives, you’d take the latter. A pinch of discontent keeps life interesting. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The more people you can align with, the bigger your team grows. You’ll build that group through the weekend, finding kindred spirits or being in the places where they’ll find you. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Pay attention to power dynamics because they teach you a lot about who people are. The true test of a person’s character is how they handle themselves when they clearly have the upper hand. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’re looking for an answer that feels right and actionable. You’ve followed lines of logic, but none of them satisfied. So try switching off your head and letting your inner guidance system have a go at this. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It’s said that every big problem was once a minor disturbance. That’s why you like to handle things when they are small, and you’re very sensitive to all red flags, even the itty-bitty ones! LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): It shouldn’t be too hard to be good. Maybe it’s the rules or environment that needs changing. The river needs no special devotion, goodness or willpower to flow effortlessly home to the sea. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Your best idea will come as a joke. So you have nothing to lose from thinking in funny terms and letting humour, playfulness and creativity run rampant in your mind. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Though you can’t change the past, you can always change the way you see it. Perhaps you’ve been harsh, not assessing the bigger picture. How else could you frame the story? CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ll feel something akin to this Shakespearean sentiment today, “But the strong base and building of my love is as the very centre of the earth, drawing all things to it”. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): When you feel your mind taking things in too serious a direction, you can lighten the mental screen with bodywork – a walk or stretch. It won’t take much! PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Being stuck is a function of having too much, not too little. Let go of an idea or item and then see if you don’t have a little more wiggle room. Jettison enough baggage and you can walk right out.
