White Ribbon Riders roll in By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

A thundering roar rolled in to Ashburton on Friday ready to deliver a powerful message about ending domestic violence. The White Ribbon Riders cruised into town as part of their South Island tour, stopping at a number of schools and events throughout the South Island over a nine-day period. After stopping for lunch at the Holy Name Catholic Church Parish Centre, the riders visited St Joseph’s School. A big focus of this year’s tour is promoting healthy masculinity, and South Island Ride leader Ken Mahon says if boys aren’t encouraged to show emotions such as sadness and anger in healthy ways, it can lead to bottling up of emotions, mental health challenges, aggression, and violence. “These unspoken rules such as ‘boys don’t cry’ have a negative impact on our young men,” he said. “It puts real pressure on boys to behave in certain ways. They suppress their emotions and their individuality and this can have a real effect on their mental health. It begins to create unhealthy attitudes that can affect how they treat their partners.” The South Island Ride is now in its ninth year, having started in 2011. Each year the riders send out a registration of interest to commu-

nities and build the ride around those towns that are keen to have them visit and promote their anti-violence messages. “We have a great team of riders with a range of skills. Some are great at talking to students, some can play the guitar and so far they’re all very proficient riders,” he said. Mahon says the key thing is that they are caring people who want to help reduce the terrible rates of violence in our communities. “When 41 per cent of a front

line (Police) officer’s time is spent dealing with family violence, you know we have a serious problem,” he said. “This is the first year we are talking about the myths that we pass down to our children. The men I’ve talked to all responded to these messages. They’ve all heard these unspoken rules and experienced the negative impacts that occur when you believe you shouldn’t cry, or that you have to toughen up or be the man.” Mahon says the message is to let

both adults and our young men know, that being a man is about so much more than being tough. It’s about being kind, empathetic and being confident in who you are, not feeling the pressure to be an outdated stereotype. The riders attend a range of events each year from marches, community days, school visits, talks at Corrections, and this year the riders even get to meet the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall who has a particular interest in family violence.

Licence holders to rally against firearms law reforms By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Firearms licence holders will be taking to the streets of Ashburton next Saturday to share their concerns over the Government’s proposed firearms law reform. The rally will be a Canterbury wide event and one of the organisers, Bob McDonald, said big numbers are anticipated as thousands of firearms owners had been contacted. “It’s all about raising awareness, and our approach is that we don’t want hillbilly rednecks there, this is for everyday Kiwis,” McDonald

said.” It was important the public understood that the reform laws might come with the right motivation, but they would have a significant impact on ordinary, everyday firearms owners, he said. “They’re trying to ram through draconian laws that have never been proven to be effective.” Changes proposed in the bill were punitive for responsible firearms owners and would hurt competitive shooters and shooting clubs, McDonald said. “This is putting shooting out of the realm for people, it’ll take

shooting sports right out of it,” he said. Shooters had been voicing their concerns since the the Arms Legislation Bill was introduced in August, but Saturday’s rally would be a serious attempt to get their message out to the community and hopefully on to politicians, McDonald said. The power of that message would come in the numbers turning up to march in the rally and it was important firearms owners made the effort to be part of the group action, he said. “This is about raising awareness

of what these law reforms will actually mean.” The Arms Legislation Bill has passed its first reading in Parliament and is now open for submissions. It proposes to introduce tighter controls on the use and possession of firearms and ammunition and follows on from the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Act which became law in April. Ashburton’s rally will start at the Ashburton RSA at 10am on November 30 and with marchers travelling up East Street and across to the Ashburton Domain.

■■MEMORIAL RIDE

Riders set to skid for Skinny A memorial mountain bike ride and plaque unveiling will be held today commemorate the life of Paul Skinner, who passed away suddenly in September, aged 47. Skids for Skinny will begin at the Mania-o-roto Scout Park at 10.30am. Riders will go to the ACL Skills Park, where a bench seat with plaque will be unveiled around 11am. People not wanting to participate in the ride can access the unveiling separately via a nearby carpark. The ride will take in the Ashburton River Trail loop and a sausage sizzle will follow. Organiser Brad O’Brien said he and friends got together to hold the event to commemorate the life of Skinner, who had been a committed mountain biker and volunteer on the river trail. In addition, the event would be a fundraiser, as they wanted to support Skinner’s son Jacob. The group felt it was important, in particular, that Jacob could continue with the sport he and his dad had been passionate about – motorcycle racing. A donation of $10 per rider has been suggested for the memorial ride, but any amount would be gratefully received, O’Brien said. Speaking to the Guardian yesterday, O’Brien said they had seen interest in participating from around 180 people but would hold registrations open right up until they took off on the ride this morning. “We’ve been blown away by the support, it’s amazing,” he said.

ACADS celebrates 30 years of service By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drugs Service (ACADS) has celebrated 30 years since its first AGM and the positive impact it has had in reducing alcohol and drug-related harm in the district. In that time the service has grown from a single full-time counsellor and a health promoter to a staff of four counsellors and two full-time health promoters. General manager Chris Clark started out on the board of the organisation before beginning to work as a health promoter and said attitudes had changed massively over the past 30 years, especially in relation to alcohol. “We have seen great changes over the years, we looked at events like the (Methven) Rodeo and the amount of arrests and harm that was happening (due to alcohol), even back in 2007,” she said. “It has been rewarding as well seeing the drop in drink-drivers and how much that has changed.” Clark said when she first started as a health promoter, alongside Jackie Girvan, they received a lot of pushback from people who did not want to hear the messages they were trying to get

across. Last year ACADS’ clinical services dealt with a total of 524 people, while in 1993 they only dealt with 83 people. “It has certainly grown from when it first started,” Clark said. “I think one of the good things about it is that it is something that people can access locally, they don’t have to travel to Christchurch or Timaru.” While the organisation has moved on from its growth phase Clark said the biggest challenge facing ACADS moving forward would be the same as many other medical programmes, a lack of funding. “The biggest concern we have is financial, keeping those funds coming in,” she said. “We also need to be keeping up to date with the new ways of helping people, we work in a far more holistic way. “We have a number of cases where we are providing an addiction service and a mental health service and a total wellbeing approach.” A large number of people have served on the board of ACADS over the 30-year period, and Clark said without their voluntary contributions, especially the current board of directors, the organisation would not be able to operate.

Chance to wander award winning garden – for free By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

When Trott’s Garden opens its gates to the community on Sunday it will signal the beginning in a new era of accessibility for the internationally recognised gardens. Sunday’s open day is the third the Trotts Garden Charitable Trust has held. It’s a day when the community can wander the gardens free of charge. Stalls, entertainment and activities are provided as way of ensuring people can enjoy a garden they essentially own. Now the trust have decided to take the free access one step further and the gates will be open to locals without charge every day until Christmas. A tiered charging regime will still apply to groups wishing to book garden tours. Nicola Walker, who markets the gardens said the trust board decided that rather than just having one free access day for the community each year, they wanted to trial having free access every day of the week. “They’ll trial this and next year they’ll decide how often access will be free,” she said.

Correction A story in Friday’s Guardian on remuneration of Ashburton District councillors incorrectly stated that this was government funded. That is incorrect, money for this remuneration comes from rates. The Remuneration Authority determines the pool of money a council must use to pay their councillors and other elected officials from. How that money is allocated is up to the council but all of the funds must be used. This year’s remuneration pool is $377,856 and these funds are collected from a Uniform Annual General Charge that is applied to rates.

Crash in Maronan Emergency services were called to a single vehicle accident on Simpsons Road just after 6am Thursday morning. The car had collided with a tree, and the driver was initially trapped. St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said one person was taken to Ashburton Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. Police are making enquiries in to the circumstances around the crash.

Stock agent fraud “Essentially the idea is to encourage people through the gate to enjoy the gardens. A garden has to be appreciated and loved and that means people.” While visits from this weekend

on will be free, there will be a donation box in the ground and all donations, large or small, are appreciated, she said. Making access to the gardens without charge from now until

Christmas was about making the property inclusive, rather than exclusive, Walker said. Trotts Garden open day will be held from 11am until 4pm on Sunday.

Expect delays near Selwyn rail level crossing People who are travelling south of the Selwyn River/Waikirikiri bridge in Canterbury this weekend should be aware of slight delays at the rail level crossing at Selwyn Lake Road. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and KiwiRail will be working to upgrade the rail level crossing on State Highway 1 south of the bridge this weekend. The work at Selwyn Lake Road will start at midday Saturday and go through to 6am Monday. People should expect slight delays and, for some of this time,

In brief

a detour will be in place. Transport Agency journey manager Tresca Forrester says this work will improve the rail and road crossing surface so that it is smoother and safer to drive across. “Early next year, we’ll be back to improve road markings and signs – a simple but effective way of giving drivers an early warning that they are approaching the crossing,” she said. To make improvements this weekend, the crossing will be closed overnight, between 2am and 8am on Sunday.

Over this time, drivers heading north on SH1 will need to turn right on to Boundary Creek Road, take a left onto Rakaia Selwyn Road and then a left onto Selwyn Lake Road. They can then follow Selwyn Lake Road to where it joins SH1. Drivers heading south on SH1 will need to turn left onto Selwyn Lake Road, then right onto Rakaia Selwyn Road, and then right onto Boundary Creek Road. This detour will be clearly signposted, and a more detailed map can be viewed on www.

journeys.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/ roadworks/282197 “For the rest of the weekend, we will have a temporary crossing in place and so people should expect some short delays,” Forrester said. These improvements are part of the Safe Network Programme, delivering safety improvements on high-risk routes across New Zealand to make roads more forgiving of people’s mistakes. The programme focuses on safe roads and roadsides, safe and appropriate speeds, and safe level crossings.

A former employee of Rural Livestock Ltd has pleaded not guilty to charges brought by the Serious Fraud Office. John Francis Williams, 38, appeared in the Dunedin District Court this week on 17 charges of false accounting, two charges of obtaining by deception, one charge of causing loss by deception and four charges of theft. The SFO alleges that Williams deceived Rural Livestock Ltd and his clients in relation to transactions totalling approximately $2 million. The defendant elected trial by jury and was remanded on bail to reappear in the Dunedin District Court on January 24.

A Shakespearean masterpiece A

The Big Little Theatre Company is celebrating it’s 10th year with their current production, Twelfth Night. PHOTO TEGAN CLARK has sworn off men for seven years. With a brilliant set design, lighting plan and timely wee interludes of musical and singing – directed by Moyra Whiting – it’s as close as you’ll probably get here in Ashburton to actually being at the Globe Theatre in London and an experience you probably shouldn’t miss out on if you’re a lover of the arts, Shakespeare and/or the local theatre scene. Under the careful and always pin-point perfection of director Jackie Heffernan this

cast are on the job from the moment they first step out onto the stage. The delivery of often long and deliberate dialogue in Shakespearean tongue is excellent and it’s clear there has been a focus on not just remembering lines, but also taking on the role of the character as well – a feat hard to achieve for some so young, but something which is done beautifully in this instance. The individual performances across the board are too good to single out any one performer, but those who do head along to

the show will undoubtedly spot some stars of the future based on their performances. Hannah Wakelin who was handed the role of choreographer deserves special mention too. The movement and dance numbers are as clean as they are eloquent and there’s hours of dedication and passion gone in both from a teaching and learning perspective. Her skills learnt during her time abroad have done her well. We are incredibly blessed here in Mid Canterbury to have a group of people who are so dedicated to growing and fostering the musical and theatrical talent we have here and it’s through shows like this that we get to see the future names we’ll come to know and enjoy in years to come. Twelfth Night might be a little different from what we are used to seeing on the stage here, but nonetheless it is an excellent performance from a remarkably skillful and dedicated group of young people. It’s our role as members of the community to support and encourage them and there is no better way of doing that than by getting along to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this weekend and watching them in action. You won’t be disappointed. Twelfth Night opened last night with a Gala Event and will rturn to the stage tonight at 7pm and then a Sunday matinee beginning at 2pm. fter 10 years of gracing the Mid Canterbury stage, you know what to expect when you walk into a show put together by the rising stars of The Big Little Theatre Company. That’s a polished, well put together and brilliantly executed performance featuring remarkable young talent and their latest production, Twelfth Night offers up exactly that. On this weekend at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, the show is a step away from the traditional type of performance you’d see from the group, but it’s one which, as you’d expect, delivers on both class and professionalism. It’s a bold move to take on the artful craft of Shakespeare for any amateur performing group, but spurred by a recent venture to the other side of the world where they spent three weeks learning their theatre craft at the Globe Theatre in London and wanting to put their teaching into practice locally. It’s a challenge the 27-strong cast, plus all the extras and the direction team behind them have tackled head-on. Twelfth Night is a sparkling comedic farce with love triangles, disguise and cross dressing. It is about brother and sister twins, Viola and Sebastian shipwrecked off the coast of an Island (Illyria) and separated. Each presumes the other dead. Viola, the sister, must assume the identity of a man to earn a living in the home of Duke Orsino, whom she quickly falls in love with. He is lovesick for the Lady Olivia who

A new future awaits Hakatere parish By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

For decades the shape of religion in New Zealand was unchanging, but today, change in churches and church structure is constant. And in many towns and cities, that change involves the bringing together of parishes, as small congregations join forces to create one strong and vibrant church community. Two Ashburton churches have now completed that journey, creating the new Hakatere Presbyterian Parish and this week that parish welcomed its first minister, Johanna Warren. On Thursday night an induction service was held for Warren at the Thomson Street church. This is her fourth parish and she comes to Ashburton from Feilding. After a career as a primary school teacher, Warren was called to enter the ministry in the 1990s. She has previously worked as an interim moderator for merged parishes and said she was looking forward to now having her own newly merged parish. For all ministers, the appointment to a parish required agreement from church members. “Either God is calling us there or he’s not,” she said. Leading a newly combined parish always came with challenges as people worked to establish a new culture, Warren said. “We will work together on this and while it will be strongly rooted in the individual cultures, Hakatere will have its own identity.”

Inevitably there would be sensitive areas but there would be many similarities and commonality of thought, she said. Parish mergers were regular occurrences now in New Zealand, Warren said as congregation numbers shrank and each one came with its own special challenges. “But there is strength in doing this, in merging shrinking parishes and doing things differently. Churches do reinvent themselves. Jesus Christ is a constant but the way we express ourselves changes.” At Thursday night’s induction ceremony, it was very clear that members of the new parish had given a lot of thought to the occasion. “We’ve made the best possible beginning,” she said. Language was key in building one parish from two and the new Hakatere parish was no different, Warren said. “We’re being very careful to build our new language and use the names of our two churches as Thomson Street and Oxford Street.” While she is originally a North Islander, Warren has served in parishes in Canterbury, Marborough and the Manawatu, but home for her now is where ever she happens to be living. Members of Hampstead’s St Pauls and Tinwald’s St James voted in December to give themselves a new future. The amalgamation was formalised and the parish renamed Hakatere in February with an interim moderator in place. Services will be held on alternate Sundays in the Thomson Street and Oxford Street churches.

The work of nine-year-old Alice Johnson could be displayed on desks of powerful people across the country after her card design was selected by mayor Neil Brown as part of the Ashburton Art Gallery’s festive card competition. The competition, held over the October school holidays, attracted more than 150 entries, with the brief of a watercolour design showing mountains to the sea. Johnson’s design included the mountains, a river, a number of crops and a barn which stood out due to Brown’s rural roots. “I looked through them and this one stood out, I looked through them again

and again and this one still stood out,” he said. “It is an amazing piece of art for a nineyear old, if I drew something when I was nine it would’ve just been stick figures and if I had to draw something today it would still be stick figures. Johnson was given 30 cards to take home and send out as a prize, while the design will be printed as the council’s official card that will be sent out at the end of the year to people like prime minister Jacinda Ardern. Tom Dukes, 8, was the winner of the people’s choice award which was voted on by visitors to the art gallery and his design will be used as the gallery’s official card.

H Our dedicated readers at The Lochlea Retirement Village.

Where you start doesn’t matter, it’s what you read

O

ne reader starts at the front and works towards the back, the other reads the back page then proceeds to the front. It doesn’t matter. They’ve been Guardian subscribers for more than 50 years. They were readers when the staid Guardian at the time carried a front page full of classifieds and the news was laid out in long single columns inside. They’ve seen it change from a broadsheet to a compact and they’ve adjusted their reading times when the newspaper became a morning publication. But you can’t change habits. At the Lochlea Retirement Village, Kathryn Shaw reads the front page and progresses through to the sports section while Lance Innes starts at the back. Kathryn loves the local news because she can catch up with “what’s happening in town”. She likes the lifestyle section and believes a “lot of people would be lonely” without the Guardian. Lance, a retired Rokeby farmer, enjoys a dry paper. Back on the farm, he recalls the delivery agent made a habit of “trying to hit the puddles”. Lance likes the mix of world, national and local news and has a keen interest in the farming pages. For Eileen Ward, the hatch, match and dispatch columns are important. For those who don’t know the expression, she means the births, deaths and marriages. Only a newspaper, in the heart of the community, carries that vital information. She loves personal stories about people’s lives and enjoys editor, Matt Markham’s, take on Mid Canterbury and the world. Barbara McLauchlan, formerly from Ruapuna, grew up with the newspaper. She too checks hatch, match and dispatch information and looks forward to the Ashburton Museum’s regular columns. “I see stories and images that I can relate to,” she says. If you were a Mona Square resident years ago and

missed your delivery then Barbara’s husband was to blame. It wouldn’t happen often. Bruce enjoyed his time as Guardian’s delivery boy and had an accurate throw. He said the newspaper offered something no other media could do. “You could go back and read it,” he said. You can’t ask the midday radio bulletin to be repeated at quarter to three. Of the columnists, Bruce likes Peter Mac, Peter Livingstone and Phill Hooper. Diana Dynes says “there’s a bit of everything in the Guardian.” It’s a family paper. “We feel as if we half own it,” she comments. Diana really likes Sue Newman’s articles. Sue has a sense of humour and has gown up with the job she says. Sue will be delighted to know she’s “matured and blossomed”. All the residents had anecdotes to share. Bruce can make the Guardian last for half an hour. At the opening of the fire museum, he saw the photo of someone he hadn’t seen for 70 years. “As a result, I caught up with him,” Bruce says. Eileen uses the Guardian to find out what’s coming to the cinema and the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. She’s keen to purchase tickets to the Ten Tenors. Lance has three grandsons who are keen cricketers and rugby players and gets a thrill when their names are mentioned in the Guardian. As well as the newspaper, Kathryn likes the Ashburton App to find out what’s happening. Names are the most precious thing a person has and woe betide a reporter who gets the spelling wrong, especially if they live in a retirement village. At a personal level I once had a young reporter who wrote a tribute to a local resident who’d died. In his confusion he wrote her name down as the ship her ancestors came out on. Fortunately the dead can’t defame a newspaper. He was taken off obituary duties and returned to sports.

ow did the Ashburton Guardian find out election results 140 years ago? There were no cars, radios, telephones or computer technology. Roads weren’t sealed. Primitive bicycles known as boneshakers or the horse and cart were too slow. There had to be another way. Residents in a town or electorate needed to know who’d represent them for the next term. The newspaper was the hub of the community and the only means of conveying the result to its readers. In 1879 it was second only to the night cart in importance. The year 1879 was significant in New Zealand politics. It was the first parliamentary election where males over 21 could vote. It would be another 14 years before women’s franchise was introduced. History tells us the MP for Selwyn, John Hall, became PM and Edward Wright won the local election. Ashburton was in the Coleridge electorate. So how did Ashburton’s newspapers receive the results? They owed their coverage to Baron Reuter. When he reported on the hot spots of Europe in the 19th century, he’d attach his copy to a carrier pigeon and they’d fly hundreds of miles to their loft. There a junior staffer would unload the pigeon’s leg and take the story to a newspaper office. Ashburton newspapers employed Percy the pigeon and his friends with great success. It’s unknown what financial transaction took place or if there was an extra bonus payment for the first pigeon home. They were the laptops of the world until telephones were invented. But pigeon post didn’t entirely die out in Mid Canterbury. In one celebrated moment in the 1980s it was reintroduced. Mt Hutt was holding an international skiing competition and the Guardian, as the local newspaper, had to convey the opening speeches and race results to New Zealand Press Association (NZPA) and its readers. The story could be phoned through but NZPA wanted a photo. So the editor of the day decided on racing pigeons. In a practice run from Mt Hutt, a pigeon made the journey in 30 minutes with a roll of film attached to its leg. They were much faster than the Guardian car which was only permitted to travel on bitumen. With everything meticulously planned, the big day arrived. But then disaster struck. Cloud and wind descended on the skifield. The opening was delayed. But a job is a job and the Guardian photographer still took the photo and attached the film to the pigeon. Percy flew but, in the rain and cloud cover, it got lost. It ended up somewhere north of Rakaia about 24 hours later. The editor’s decision to use the past to solve the present had backfired. From then on carrier pigeons weren’t mentioned in the office. Instead the latest technology such as typewriters, telephones and telegraph was deployed. If anyone raised the subject, the answer was “that’s not my pigeon”.

The company previously known as Hikurangi Cannabis announced this week the harvest of its first crop of flowers, derived from 5000 plants. These plants were grown from a shipment of different high THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and high CBD (cannabidiol) varieties received at the company’s growing facility earlier this year. The company is not able to sell any of this crop, given that it was grown under a research licence. Instead, these plants will be used for ongoing research with Rua’s local partners, including Callaghan Innovation, University of Otago, University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington, Unitec Institute of Technology, ESR and Scion. The aim of this research is to develop products that

can be sold once the legislation changes. These products could include oils, capsules and tinctures that can be sold to patients suffering from a wide range of ailments. Through early research, the company has been able to identify a number of unique plants, which it plans to take forward into a genetic breeding programme. This compares to the kiwifruit industry, which has developed a range of high-value gold, green and red cultivars into highly valuable intellectual property (IP). Should Rua man-

age to grow something similarly unique in the local market, it could lead to lucrative opportunities both locally and abroad. But protecting its IP in the agricultural space can prove a challenge. This was seen earlier this week with news that kiwifruit company Zespri was planning legal action against Chinese growers for helping themselves to its prime SunGold plant material and using it to propagate up to 2500ha of illegal plantings. As New Zealand’s numerous cannabis companies start to hustle to

stand out in the market, the IP developed by their chief growers will become hugely important to their businesses. There will also be fierce competition for the best growers in the country, given how technical cannabis harvesting can be. Securing the best talent, protecting IP and then developing products clinically proven to help patients will ultimately determine the difference between the cannabis firms that make it and those that join the growing pile of business casualties around the world.

■■GRACE MILLANE MURDER

Guilty verdict ‘will not reduce pain’ By Sam Hurley and Anna Leask NZME

Grace Millane’s father said the murder verdict from the jury “will not reduce the pain” the family has suffered. David Millane made the comments after a jury of 12 returned a verdict of murder for the man who killed her after a Tinder date. “Grace was our sunshine ... she did not deserve to be murdered in such a barbaric way,” he said. David thanked the police and prosecution. The prosecutors “never shied away from the tough parts” of the case, he said. David and his wife were in tears through their statement. At one point he struggled to read his statement, because of the tears in his eyes. He thanked New Zealand. The country had “opened their hearts to Grace and our family”, he said. “We must return home and try to pick up the pieces of our lives.” The jury’s decision was unanimous. As jurors left the courtroom some could be heard sobbing. Her parents were in the public gallery for the verdict and embraced as they heard the words guilty of murder. Her mother Gillian was weeping. The murderer, 27, looked distraught. He can not be named for legal reasons. He is due to be sentenced on February 21. A year of heartbreak for Grace’s family Grace Millane had set out on her OE and had only been in New Zealand for 10 days when her life was cruelly snuffed out during sex with a man, 27, she had met earlier that night on Tinder. She died on the eve of her 22nd birthday in December last year. The Crown said her killer spent five to 10 minutes strangling her and then took “trophy” photos of her body. He then created a “labyrinth of storytelling and lies” while calmly disposing of her body and other evidence. After Millane died, her killer searched on Google for “hottest fire”. Several pornography sites

Grace Millane were then accessed and videos viewed. At 1.59am on the night she died a photo of a naked woman was taken using his phone. Further internet searches included “car hire Auckland”, “time in London”, “large sports bags”, “flesh-eating birds” and “are there vultures in New Zealand?” Yesterday afternoon, the High Court at Auckland jury had returned to the court to ask the judge a question – and the jury foreperson had indicated that a verdict would not be far away. After the verdict was returned Justice Moore told the jury “it is never easy to judge a fellow man”. “It is evident each of you has thought very hard and very careful,” he said. “This has been a particularly difficult trial.” The judge discharged them all from sitting on a jury for the next seven years. Earlier yesterday Justice Moore provided his closing remarks and directions to the jury. After deliberating for the afternoon the jury knocked on the courtroom door to ask a question. They asked: “Does ‘when he applied pressure’ refer to when he started to apply pressure at the beginning or can it refer to any time when he applied pressure?” Justice Moore said: “It is not limited to the beginning. It can be at any time during the application of force leading to death.” The jury’s foreperson told the

The Crown alleges the accused strangled the British backpacker to death and then took “trophy” photos of her body. But the defence claims the 27-year-old “freaked out” after an accidental death during sex. On Thursday, the High Court jury heard the closing arguments of Auckland’s Crown solicitor Brian Dickey and the accused’s chief legal counsel Ian Brookie.

Allen’s Ashburton offer a great service

Dickey and his team allege the accused murdered Millane in his CityLife hotel apartment in downtown Auckland on December 1 last year – the eve of her 22nd birthday. During his closing address, Dickey said it was a misconception that the Crown have to prove the accused intended to kill Millane. “That is wrong,” he said. “That is one method, but it is not the only method.” Dickey told the jury they could convict the accused of murder if

they found he displayed a reckless intent. But Brookie said Millane’s was an “accidental death that took place during sexual activity”. When confronted with Millane’s lifeless body, Brookie said his client “freaked out”. “He reacted badly,” he said. “He acted selfishly. Once committed to that course he had to follow it through, he had to make it look like everything was fine. “He lied and tried to cover it up, there’s no dispute about that.”

■■UNITED STATES

‘Human scum’ NZME Donald Trump has exploded over the ongoing impeachment inquiry in a series of tweets accusing investigators of being “human scum”. The US President deemed House intelligence committee chairman Adam Schiff “corrupt”, and said his fellow Republicans were “dealing with human scum who have taken Due Process and all of the Republican Party’s rights away”. There is no evidence Schiff has lied, nor that the impeachment inquiry being conducted at present is unconstitutional. Trump’s outburst followed a testimony by his Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland before the House Intelligence Committee, who stated that the President did set a quid pro quo with his Ukrainian counterpart. It also came after his former Russia adviser issued a dire warning about the country’s plan to meddle in the next US election during her remarkable impeachment inquiry testimony. Former National Security Council Director Fiona Hill today told an impeachment hearing in Capitol Hill “we are running out of time to stop” Russia from executing a plan to interfere in the 2020 presidential election. Hill and US Political Affairs Counselor in Ukraine David Holmes appeared before the House Intelligence Committee yesterday in the second week of televised impeachment hearings, in which Democrats are seeking to establish whether Trump abused the power of his office by leveraging military aid and a White House meeting to extract a commitment from Zelensky to probe the Bidens. The inquiry focuses on a July 25 phone call in which Trump

Losing a bit of wisdom Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has rejected a playful suggestion she posts a woozy video on social media after her wisdom teeth are removed. The idea was put to her by ZM breakfast hosts during a light-hearted interview on yesterday’s show. “Come on, do it – get a GoPro, rig it up in the car,” begged Fletch. “It’s a YouTube hit waiting to happen.” Ardern told reporters she would be taking a few days off over the weekend and early next week to recover from the dental operation. “I apologise; that’s more detail than any of you would have liked – and more than I’d like to share, but I didn’t want to start any speculation.”

Donald Trump couldn’t see impeachment coming “in his wildest dreams”. is accused of asking Ukraine’s new President Volodymyr Zelensky to carry out two investigations that could benefit him politically, including one targeting Democratic political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Hill warned House politicians against pushing false conspiracy theories that minimise Russia’s meddling in US elections – because the Motherland is planning to do so again in 2020, according to her. “We are running out of time to stop them,” she said. “The impact of the successful 2016 Russian campaign remains evident today. Our nation is being torn apart.

Truth is questioned. Our highly professional and expert career foreign service is being undermined. US support for Ukraine – which continues to face armed Russian aggression – has been politicised. “The Russian Government’s goal is to weaken our country – to diminish America’s global role and to neutralise a perceived US threat to Russian interests. “President Putin and the Russian security services aim to counter US foreign policy objectives in Europe, including in Ukraine, where Moscow wishes to reassert political and economic dominance.” She also cautioned House Republicans that they should

not try to involve her in backing those theories. “And as I told this committee last month, I refuse to be part of an effort to legitimise an alternate narrative that the Ukrainian Government is a US adversary, and that Ukraine – not Russia – attacked us in 2016,” she said. “This is a fictional narrative that has been perpetrated by the Russian security services themselves.” The President defended himself over his conversations with Ukraine, saying “the calls were perfect, there was nothing said that was wrong”. “I never in my wildest dreams thought my name would in any way be associated with the ugly word, Impeachment.”

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star was held at gunpoint in Paris in October 2016 and had a number of pieces of jewellery stolen, including a 20-carat emerald-cut ring she was given by her husband Kanye West. But she recently shocked fans in the advertisements for her KKW fragrance Diamonds Collection when she appeared to be wearing the sparkler once again. However, Kim has revealed she never got the jewellery back, but she simply borrowed an identical piece. “I thought this was the perfect way to bring it back and wear them again.”

OUR VIEW

An incredible 30 years of hard work I

f you’ve been in a schooling situation in the past 30 years, chances are that you’ve probably at some point in time come across or been witness to the efforts of the team at the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drugs Service (ACADS). A frequent and prominent service across the Ashburton District for the past three decades, they’ve done wonderful work during that time in helping raise awareness about issues that are very prevalent in our society. Those who have been in a class hosted by the team will well remember the messages that were hammered home across the classroom floor, the often powerful images and sto-

ries that were shared – all in the hope of ensuring that another Mid Canterbury local didn’t become a statistic. And we shouldn’t undervalue the part that they play, ever. It’s interesting to hear Chris Clark talk about the push back they received from people when they first came onto the scene, trying to stop them from sharing a harsh, but truthful message

about what was happening out in the community and across New Zealand. There is no right, nor is there a wrong way either, for the message to be spread to young minds to be fair. What might work for some will, without a doubt, not work for others so the more methods, manners and ways in which information is shared the better and ACADS have done a good job in trying to be across everything. I was speaking with a friend yesterday about our younger years and we can both vividly remember the presence of the ACADs team at a huge number of events around the Ashburton District.

Their work, particularly when this writer was still at school, around school ball time was immense. They would be there from the start to finish and ensure that everyone was having a safe but enjoyable time and that there was no trouble. Likewise, the former social nights that used to be hosted at places like Celtic and Tinwald, where they were on hand, keeping a watchful eye and then dedicating their own time to drive people home to ensure they got there safely. A lot of their efforts however, have been done behind the scenes. By a passionate and caring group of people who have only ever wanted people to be more informed and more

prepared for the dangers that are associated with alcohol and drugs and, for the large part of it, they’ve done an excellent job. To be around and be doing such great work for 30 years is an absolute incredible achievement and one which I’m sure they celebrated with great pride this week. There’s a long way to go, and looking back at the efforts that have been made and the work that has been done, they are still a long way away from being finished. An asset to this community and this district, let’s hope that there’s people around like the ACADs crew for many years to come.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Saturday, November 23, the 327th day of 2019. There are 38 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On November 23, 1963, President Lyndon B Johnson proclaimed November 25 a day of national mourning following the assassination of President John F Kennedy. On this date: In 1804, the 14th president of the United States, Franklin Pierce, was born in Hillsboro, New Hampshire. The most magical season of all Y

ou can definitely feel it. There’s no denying. Christmas is in the air and the magic is unfolding. Take a wander through the Arcade and witness that magnificent big tree right in the middle atrium, pop upstairs at Paper Plus, there are tell-tale signs in stores aplenty and soon Ashburton will turn on its festive lights, the Santa Parade will arrive, Christmas in the Park will happen and there will be no escaping the feeling. Grinches please leave now. Or – convert! Depending on age and stage, Christmas at yours holds endless possibilities. For young families, it is all about a little mythical surreal lie (Santa CAE – the chimney access exponent). It is one lie I am happy to peddle. Kids grow up real fast and a bit of escapism and fantasy is good for the soul . . . isn’t it? For older folks and empty nesters there is hopefully a chance to reunite with loved ones for the day but with the global spread of family members that’s not always possible or practical. But let us be grateful for modern marvels like Skype and FaceTime where a world apart can be bridged instantly. Sure it’s not a cuddle or a hug, but in time they will sort that too, I am sure. And then, sadly, there are those who will be alone this Christmas Day and if you know someone like that, please reach out and send them some love. It will no doubt mean more to them than you could possibly imagine. How’s the annual Christmas leave looking? I’ve managed to crank out roughly three weeks from the radio station over the festive season and no doubt some of that time will be spent exploring our great province and beyond. It’s great to travel overseas but that experience usually simply reinforces that which is right on our doorstep. A lazy sunny drive down to Geraldine for morning tea, maybe a look through their excellent car and machinery museum, down to Caroline Bay and a wander around the hol-

iday crowds, back up through Pleasant Point, the inland scenic route taking in our district’s little towns, maybe a late lunch at the Staveley Store, Methven and home. It is all very doable and right within our grasp, from ocean beachscapes to foothill splen-

dour, we are blessed to be right in the middle of something quite special. About this time, back in the ’60s, I was working my gig at Hays – the friendly store. Jumbo – the life-size elephant had been brought out of his dismantled loft slumber, and reassembled by my father who ran the display department. My after school hours and late night Fridays were occupied with plying 10 cent Lucky Dips to discerning young customers. Girls-under-five. Girls-over-five.

There was also the added novelty that we would have only recently converted to decimal currency and your 10 cents went a long way back then. Jumbo was called upon, by one boy placed out front with the money bag, to deliver as appropriate. “A present for a six-year-old girl please Jumbo?” At which point, the second boy, seated inside the hollow fibreglass behemoth, would navigate a series of levers operating Jumbo’s tilting head and hinged trunk. The trunk would disappear through a curtained opening in the circus stool he was seated upon, at which point the appropriate aged parcel was attached by rubber band to the curtain hook on the tip of his trunk. (Look carefully next time you visit a zoo. All elephants have a curtain hook on the tip of their trunks). Which reminds me, in the days before weekend trading, Friday nights up town were a real occasion. Something quite special. A unique night-out vibe. It’s fun to look back on special times isn’t it? My very best compliments of the season to you and yours. Here’s to making some new memories this year. Five strong Allan Andrews brought this copy of a painting of his father Norrie with his team of horses in to the Guardian. The painting was done from a photo that was taken around 1935, and artist Barry White completed the painting after the photo was published in a book Allan wrote. Allan does not remember the horses as his father sold them in 1945, when Allan was only sixmonths-old, replacing them with an International model M tractor.

hen John Skevington and Jo Ruane stand at the entrance to their Village Green subdivision at Lake Hood, it’s a pretty emotional moment. For them the 32 home subdivision represents years of dreaming, planning and often of overcoming some pretty big hurdles, but seeing the first stage of that subdivision completed and sections ready to sell made the long journey well worth the effort, the couple said. “It’s pretty amazing and looks better than we could ever have imagined,” Jo said.

“The landscaping really finishes it off.” Large trees have been planted to give potential buyers a feel of how the subdivision will look when completed and they make a huge difference to the feel of the spaces, John said. “First impressions are important and looking from the stone entrance with the landscaping done it looks great,” he said. While it had been a long journey from their dream of creating the subdivision on what had been John’s family’s land to having sections ready to sell, seeing the first stage ready to go made every minute

of that worthwhile, they said. Now, Jo said, they were looking to the future, to moving onto the second stage that included eight more sections. Planning for these is already under way and while it’s the five first stage sections that are ready for buyers, they’re encouraging people who may be looking to the future to talk to them about sections in stage two. Sunday’s open day at The Village Green will run from 2pm to 4pm however John and Jo will be on site all afternoon to share their vision with potential buyers.

A new style of development for Ashburton L

and that was once part of a working farm is about to have a new life as the Ashburton District’s newest and one of its most innovative residential subdivision. An open day at that subdivision, The Village Green, will be held on Sunday, November 24, with the first five sections in what will be a 32 home development now ready to sell. Developing land on a terrace above Lake Hood, has long been a dream for John Skevington and Jo Ruane, however, taking it from dream to reality has been a very long journey. They’ve overcome many hurdles but fuelled by their belief in what is a new style of development for the Ashburton District, the couple refused to give up. And their hard work has now been rewarded with sections in stage one in their Village Green development now on the market. The Village Green is a unique concept. The development is spread over 20 hectares and when completed will see 35 homes built over four stages. Those houses will be built in clusters with each having unique views of the Southern Alps.

For the couple the land has a special association as the subdivision was part of a much larger block that was once farmed by the Skevington family and the surrounding land is still a working farm. They believe that the location of The Village Green is unique and provides superb sites for homes that will provide

owners with the best of rural living without the hard work – the surrounding greenspaces will be theirs to enjoy without worrying about lawn care. The Village Green presents a unique opportunity to enjoy country living without the work. The larger than average sections are carefully planned to maximise

stunning mountain views and open fields. There is easy access to Lake Hood. Careful planning and design ensures each section has uninterrupted views and room to spread out, unlike the cookie cutter sites of the city, with the first five sections in stage one having elevated sites overlooking Lake Hood’s waterways.

I

am extremely proud to be part of The Village Green Development. I first met John Skevington when I began marketing the first stage of the Lake Hood project and then Jo later when

The Village Green concept plans were beginning to take shape. It was really exciting to see the vision they both had for this piece of land up on the terrace at Lake Hood. So easily they could have taken the easy straight forward approach to dividing this block of land. Together they had this vision for urban living with a lifestyle feel, with plenty of open spaces and limited lots for sale.

When you choose a Ray White agent, you choose important advice, expert local market knowledge and customer service that’s second to none.

They have fought every step of the way to make this development special. From the day I submitted my support to the council and spoke at the hearing I have watched Jo and John stand steadfast to the original idea that they both had for the development. The entrance and landscaping they have done on this first stage of development is truly awesome and even this did

not come easily. But they again stuck to their guns and have done it. As John says, Jo likes things to be nice and creating an entrance and planting the environment around the sections makes for an elegant and classy place to live. So close to town this very different way of section layout will truly give residents a very relaxing lifestyle.

A client-focused design approach For an architect, a project doesn’t get much better than designing a home in a unique subdivision that has outstanding rural views says Chilton Mayne Architecture director Garry Mayne.

W

hen Jo Ruane and John Skevington asked him to design a show home for a section in their Village Green subdivision at Lake Hood, Garry said it was an opportunity he was quick to grasp. He met John and Jo on site and asked them what the features were that they liked most about the subdivision. The answers were immediate – the rural outlook, views to the mountains and views to the lake, the top level landscaping plan along with the high specification of the subdivision itself. “I saw right away that they both have a real passion and drive for the development and I recognised that this was a great opportunity to create a high level development to complement their passion for design,” Garry said. Their vision created an exciting brief, he said. The subdivision opens up huge opportunities for buyers because every section is unique and has its own views of mountains and farmland. He and partner David Chilton were involved in The Village Green at a very early stage, consulting on the design covenants and individual boundary setbacks. “Those design guidelines give the owners a peace of mind that all homes within the subdivision maintain a high level of design and construction. The setbacks allow each section to maintain view lines without being screened from your neighbour’s property,” Garry said. Plans and artist’s impressions of the show home will be on site at the November 24 open home. The show home would set the

standard for the subdivision, he said. “It’s designed to rest naturally on its site while remaining open to the impeccable outlook. Lake and mountain views provide a serene backdrop from the living, kitchen, dining, lounge and master bedroom spaces.” The home comprises two gables facing east-west. Cedar has been chosen as the main cladding material and river stone detail used on the chimneys to add depth

alongside the cedar. This also references back to the materials used in the subdivision landscaping, Garry said. Riverstone on the exterior is mirrored in the interior to create features in the entry foyer. The home also includes a range of techniques to create a warm and energy efficient home with high levels of wall and ceiling insulation, thermally broken

aluminium windows and doors plus an insulated floor slab. In addition, Chilton + Mayne will have plans on site for other sections to give potential buyers an indication of the style of home that could be built on that site. “It’s about creating the vision for people,” he said. David and Garry both grew up in Ashburton and in 2010 returned home to

Innovative leading tool a boon for buyers W

hen you’re a small bank, the opportunity to be part of a residential development that sets new standards for the Ashburton District is one that gets you pretty excited, said NBS manager David Jones. His bank has partnered with Jo Ruane and John Skevington as they’ve developed their Village Green subdivision on terraced land above Lake Hood. It’s a partnership that was built on a shared vision and on both parties having an absolute belief in the project, David said. With sections in the development now on the market, David is keen to use his passion for the project to help buyers create their own dream of a new home on a site that offers the best of rural living with urban amenities on their doorstep. Building a home is a process that needs to be carefully worked through from a financial perspective, David said. “Ideally you should have your finance sorted before you buy a section, because, while you can use bridging finance that’s both expensive and quite difficult to obtain,” he said. NBS, however had a product in its lending tool kit that took the complexities out of needing to sell an existing home before you could build. “We offer a 16-week, interest-free loan on a new build. That starts when the slab goes down, you get 16 weeks from that date.” Most builds were completed within that time frame and it allowed a person with an existing property to sell plenty of time to achieve this. At the end of the period, the loan became part of a mortgage on the property, he said. For potential buyers in The Village Green that would mean they could buy their section, have plans drawn up, commission a builder and have work start while they were still living in their existing home, David said. “That puts the build within reach. If you can cobble together the money for the section we could look to put this facility in place.”

The loan product was new to the Ashburton market, but it was one that would be ideal for The Village Green buyers, he said. A registered valuation is need to estimate how much the new home will be worth and a contract with the builder needs to be established so the bank can make regular payments directly into their account. As construction begins, the build loan is paid out in agreed stages. Your NBS account manager will inspect the build progress to ensure the works have been completed (and therefore has a certain value at that stage).

During the project you only pay interest on the money already drawn down, and you do not start repaying the loan itself until the project is completed. A build loan is usually on a floating interest rate Borrowing for a section or for a home build in The Village Green would come under loan to value ratio (LVR) conditions – a 20 per cent deposit on the house valuation and 30 per cent on land. With the subdivision’s sections on the market at a reasonable price, borrowing rates very low and the option of a 16week, interest-free loan, David anticipates the first stage of the development will sell

quite quickly. “We’ve built a great relationship with John and Jo and we’d love to build a similar relationship with people wanting to buy into this unique development.” NBS has been part of the Ashburton finance scene since 2012 and while they might be smaller than the district’s trading banks that meant staff had the advantage of knowing their customers by name, he said. “We’d love to be able to take the next step and be part of the process for people who’re buying into this amazing development.”

Tech in the hot seat

Harry Jones should have a big role to play for Tech today in the Canterbury Country Combined Cricket competition. By Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Saturday afternoon senior cricket returns to the Ashburton Domain today with both Mid Canterbury sides in the Canterbury Country Combined competition hosting matches. The unbeaten Tech Stags side will play host to the Peninsula Harbour side on the Technical wicket while right next door, Allenton will take on Weedons in what shapes up to be a very interesting match-up. The two local sides sit on top of the points table in the southern section of the competition, with

Tech well clear of the pack and Allenton sitting in second place, ahead by a higher run-rate, from their rivals today, Weedons. Allenton and Weedons clashed for the first time this season back at the end of October with Allenton claiming a five-wicket victory when chasing down 128 runs. They’ll be out to use that as their confidence for today’s clash as since that match they haven’t won again. With good conditions expected, Allenton will be relying once again on their big players to step up and get the job done. Incidentally though, the early

stages of their run chase in that match weren’t particularly flash, with their first four wickets falling for less the 20 runs before Manpreet Singh stepped out on the wicket and proceeded to bludgeon his way to an unbeaten 70 of 47 balls to get them home comfortably. So, a strong start from the top order will be paramount with Weedons certain to be aware of the firepower lurking within the Allenton batting line up. Across the park, Tech will be out to firstly, keep their unbeaten record intact, but also achieve their own personal goals and challeng-

es in a match which they should, on form, win. They travelled to take on Peninsula Harbour earlier in the competition in Tai Tapu and produced their most unconvincing victory of the season so far when winning by 30 runs. Batting first on that occasion they scored 188 before rolling their rivals for 158. What is on their side is the form of some of their key players. After all sides had a week off last week, Will McKee will be back in action today, fresh off scoring a century in his last appearance, while the bowling attack will be

spearheaded by the usual suspects including quick bowlers Richard Print and Harry Jones. While today’s attention will be on club cricket duties, a number of younger players will be out in action tomorrow in representative fixtures. The Mid Canterbury senior side has forfeited it’s clash with North Otago in Oamaru due to low player numbers, but the Mid Canterbury Primary side will play Canterbury Country in Ashburton, the Under 15 side is in Timaru taking on South Canterbury and the Under 17 is also playing South Canterbury but in Ashburton.

■■TENNIS

Destiny in own hands By Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Only a complete brain explosion and a horror day at the office stands in the way of Southern claiming round one honours in the Mid Canterbury A Grade Tennis competition today. After a week off for Canterbury Show Weekend, Mid Canterbury’s top tennis players return to the courts of the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre for the final day of play in the first round of the season and the momentum all sits with the unbeaten Southern side. They’ve been the form side this year winning all four matches they’ve played in and they’ll be looking to finish it off in style this afternoon when they tackle Dorie. And, barring a complete disaster where they don’t win a single match and Hampstead secure a faultless victory over their rivals, Fairton, Southern should walk off the courts later on today as the round one winners. Their match-up with Dorie will create some interesting battles within the battle, particularly the number one singles match between two of Mid Canterbury’s finest in Sam Bubb and Rhys Cromie, should they both be there. Cromie is two from four in singles games this season, while Bubb hasn’t tasted defeated in the three matches he’s played in the competition. Hampstead’s clash with Fairton won’t be an easy one either and while they’re probably resigned

to the fact that they can’t catch Southern, they will be all about building momentum into the second half of the season. Fairton looked right on song in the early stages of the competition

winning their first two matches, but they’ve struggled since and come up against a Hampstead side who will be reeling after a shock defeat at the hands of Dorie two weeks ago.

In today’s third match-up, on the Oak Grove courts, Methven and Allenton will be locking horns, with the latter still on the hunt for their first victory of the season.

Historic win over Australia puts Canada in semi-finals AP Canada became the first team to reach the semi-finals of the new Davis Cup Finals, winning the decisive doubles match to beat Australia 2-1 yesterday. Vasek Pospisil and Denis

Shapovalov defeated John Peters and Jordan Thompson 6-4, 6-4 to give Canada its first Davis Cup win against the Aussies. Nick Kyrgios surprisingly did not play for Australia, being left with a cheering role because of a collarbone injury.

“We didn’t really have a choice,” Australia team captain Lleyton Hewitt said. “He couldn’t play. That’s just the way the cards fell.” The 30th-ranked Kyrgios, Australia’s No. 2 player, had won both of his matches in the group stage without dropping a set. He was

substituted by the 48th-ranked John Millman, who hadn’t played previously in Madrid. “I was expecting to play Nick. “We were surprised,” Pospisil said. “Then I just digested it for five minutes and went back to getting my rackets ready. And obvi-

ously start to change my mentality in terms of how I was going to play the match a little bit because they’re two very different players, polar opposites.” Canada had not beaten Australia in nine previous Davis Cup meetings.

Petanque in the spotlight

Some of the South Island’s best senior petanque players will be plying their trade in Ashburton this weekend at the South Island Senior Doubles tournament today and tomorrow. Thirty-two pairings from across the South Island are rolling in for the two-day tournament and the level of quality expected from those in attendance is high. The tournament officially kicks into gear this morning, with five qualifying matches before the serious stuff of finals are held tomorrow on the Ashburton petanque court, next to the Ashburton MSA Bowling Green on Racecourse Road. Marion Harrison, who is part of the team behind the event, said they were looking forward to hosting players from far and wide over the weekend. “It’s exciting to have players coming here to play and we are looking forward to hosting them,” she said. The tournament will include seven local players as well as representatives from Alexandra, Dunedin and Christchurch and North Canterbury. Regulations require that an official umpire is present at the tournament and with scarce numbers around the South Island, this weekend’s umpire is travelling from Blenheim to officiate. Play begins today from 9am with five swiss games before further pool play and then knockout matches are tomorrow. Harrison said members of the public were more than welcome to come along and watch the action and that representatives would be more than happy to answer any questions spectators might have.

McLaughlin fires back at critics New back-to-back Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin says he ‘feels sorry’ for rivals who have criticised his team through a controversial 2019 season. DJR Team Penske and McLaughlin have been far and away the dominant combination this year, winning a record 18 races. The last of those was the Bathurst 1000, after which the team was penalised for the Fabian Coulthard ‘go-slow’ saga and an engine breach in qualifying. Critics have also questioned the validity of the New Zealander’s success due to the Mustang’s alleged early-season aerodynamic advantage. McLaughlin, though, again brushed off the negative sentiments when addressing the media ahead of this weekend’s Newcastle 500. “Everyone says it’s been a tough year but not really, it’s been the best year of my life,” said the 26-year-old. “I’ve won 18 races, I’ve won Bathurst – the one that I always wanted to – and now with a second championship in a row, I’m really proud.” Rivals including David Reynolds have criticised McLaughlin through the media during the year, while Scott Pye blasted the two-time champion on Instagram. Pye took exception to recent

Supercars champion again, Kiwi driver Scott McLaughlin

comments from McLaughlin where he declared he’s “got annoyed with my peers and how everything’s played out”. McLaughlin had declared the paddock as “toxic” on the Sunday night at Sandown, where he’d mathematically clinched the title. Pye wrote on Instagram: “You must understand that some people are going to be pissed off that a car and team that’s constantly found to be illegal continue to get meaningless penalties.

“Not saying you wouldn’t have won, clearly doing a great job, but who knows! “It will forever be tainted and that isn’t because of the other drivers’ mentalities it’s because of your team’s doing.” McLaughlin bit back at Pye’s Instagram story, replying in part: “30 out of 32 races, 18 of which we have won, 18 races which our car was found to be legal. “Now when you say our car was found to be “constantly illegal”

that’s false. We were found once to have a technical infringement in 1 qualifying, out of 325 times being scrutineered up until Sandown. “So now you understand why I believe this is how our title hasn’t been tainted.” Speaking to the media in Newcastle prior to the Pye spat, McLaughlin had stressed: “I can’t control what other people say, what they do, what they judge us on.

“I control what I can control and that’s driving this car as fast as I can and every time I turn up to work, that’s my job, so that won’t impact my job. “If anything, I feel probably sorry for those guys. “They have obviously all year been, especially one guy in particular, focused on our team and my car and myself and we have just got on with the job and I feel like we have put our best forward and hence why we are ahead in the championship. “We are race drivers, we all want to win so any time you’re winning everyone wants to drag you down and they’ll do whatever they can to do that. “You have got to be prepared for anything. [I’m] probably surprised with what’s been said and what’s gone on, but each to their own.” Having entered the past two Newcastle 500’s in the thick of the title battle, McLaughlin said this time around will be a nice change with the championship already secured. “I feel like I can enjoy Newcastle for what it is a lot more,” he said. “Certainly the last two years have been very stressful, I’ve had a lot on my mind so to now come here, it’s a lot more relaxing and I can touch the championship trophy without being worried that I’m going to curse myself.”

■■CRICKET

Black Caps have to dig deep NZME Early on day two of the first test, the Black Caps were rather pleased – their bowlers had done the job to wrestle them back into the contest against England. Come the end of the day, though, and it was the New Zealand batsmen left needing to produce a fightback. A 25-minute spell saw four England wickets tumble as the Black Caps stormed back into the contest in Mount Maunganui, but their hard work was somewhat undone late in the day, as England claimed four wickets of their own before stumps to regain control. The Black Caps will resume on day three on 144-4, with Henry Nicholls unbeaten on 26 and BJ Watling on six, trailing England by 209 runs after they had capitulated on a sunny morning at Bay Oval. From 277-4, England collapsed

to 295-8, and while some resistance from Jos Buttler and Jack Leach got the visitors to 353, the Black Caps were given a sniff thanks to Tim Southee’s 4-88. To win, the Black Caps are likely going to need to score at least 400, and follow that up with a good bowling performance – assuming they are unlikely to be keen on chasing a big score batting fourth. The draw is still a realistic option – in fact, all three (or knowing these two teams, four) results are still possible, something that wasn’t a certainty when Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope started the day in style. The pair had added 74 for the fifth wicket without too much trouble – Pope successfully reviewing an lbw dismissal to Colin de Grandhomme – but after a day one performance defined by patience, England quickly lost their cool.

Stokes was the first, flashing at a ball from Southee and sending it to slip, where Ross Taylor made amends for his drop the night before by – 28 runs later – snagging a right-handed screamer above his head to send Stokes back, nine runs short of a century. Pope too got lured into attacking a Southee outswinger, slicing at a wide delivery as Watling took a routine catch, and the next ball Sam Curran was trapped lbw by an inswinger. Jofra Archer survived the hattrick ball, but two balls later guided Trent Boult straight to Southee at second slip, and in quick time, England had lost four wickets for 18 runs. Buttler and Leach added 52 for the ninth wicket to stop the rot – Buttler being caught in the deep by Mitchell Santner, who had to leap over the hoardings to make the catch after nearly being caught unawares signing auto-

graphs for fans – but after starting the day at 241-4, the Black Caps bowlers walked off pleased with their efforts on a pitch which still favours the batsmen. However, New Zealand’s top order didn’t make the most of it. Jeet Raval – who had earlier dropped Buttler – continued his poor run of late, surviving multiple chances including an lbw review on 10, before some ungainly slogging off the bowling of Leach ended with him holing out to mid-wicket for an ugly 19. Having solidly seen off Archer and Stuart Broad – wicketless in a combined 24 overs – it was the rest of the English attack doing the damage. Tom Latham had earlier departed lbw to Curran for just eight – it was a strange dismissal in which he seemed to have got bat on ball, but didn’t realise – while Taylor (25) played an unnecessary pull shot to Stokes and

picked out deep midwicket. Still, Kane Williamson remained, and looked his usual fluent self. He raced through to 40 at nearly a run-a-ball rate, the back-foot punch through the off-side the pick of his usual repertoire, and while he slowed down as England turned the screws slightly, he still passed 50, for the 51st time in tests. The next ball, though, and Curran found some extra bounce, surprising the skipper, who could only fend it to Stokes at second slip, reducing the Black Caps to 127-4. Nicholls copped a nasty blow on the helmet from Archer in the day’s penultimate over but reached stumps after bravely fighting off another short ball-barrage – displaying attributes the Black Caps will need in spades when they take strike today.

■■OPINION

Wallabies on to a big winner By Phil Gifford

W

hat will the Wallabies get from Dave Rennie? Stability, with a dash of daring, and a very astute rugby mind. Let’s look first at the ability of Rennie to handle the pressures of the job, especially the off-field areas where Michael Cheika, who down to the last days of his tenure was having public arguments with his boss, Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle, was always a bad headline waiting to happen. Imagine, for example, how explosively Cheika might have reacted if he had basically been accused of cheating. It actually happened to Rennie when he was coaching the Chiefs, and how he behaved is a good illustration of staying focused under fire. During his last couple of years at the Chiefs, before he went to Glasgow in 2017, Rennie had a weekly chat on Radio Sport with D’arcy Waldergrave. In April, 2016, there was huge controversy when the last five minutes of a desperately close game in Wellington between the Chiefs and the Hurricanes was

won 28-27 by the Chiefs, with the last five minutes played under “golden oldie” scrum rules when Chiefs’ prop Siate Tokolahi left the field injured, and the Chiefs said they didn’t have another prop who could pack on the tighthead side. A story in the Herald suggested “gamesmanship” by Rennie, hinting that Tokolahi’s injury may have been “very convenient” for the Chiefs. Waldergrave’s colleagues suggested this was one week Rennie wasn’t going to be talking. Waldergrave rang anyway. Rennie, he quickly discovered, was almost incandescent with rage. “I said, ‘How are you Dave’? He said, ‘I’m ****ed off Darcy’. ‘Are you still going to talk with me this afternoon’? Dave said, ‘Ab-so-bloodylutely I am. I want to say exactly what went on. Because I’ve been accused of cheating, and that’s not how I go about my business’”. Sure enough a few hours later Rennie was on air, containing his anger, instead clinically detailing how Tokolahi had been spotted by coaching staff on the sideline staggering before the decision to take him from the field. “He wasn’t afraid to face it all

head on”, Waldergrave told me, “and to this day I’ve got a huge amount of respect for him for doing that, and for how he did it.” How daring is Rennie? When he was a coach still on the way up, running the Manawatu Turbos, he spotted an 18-yearold kid called Aaron Cruden, who was completing his first club season out of high school. Rennie sat him down and delivered the sort of message every aspiring young player would love to hear. By the winter of 2008 Cruden was playing for Rennie’s Turbos. Six games in everything changed. Cruden was diagnosed with testicular cancer. “I was quite lucky that mine was caught early. But it had spread to the lungs and that’s why I had to have chemotherapy”. Chemotherapy is an amazing tool, but specialists will tell you that to deal with a disease as ugly as cancer, the treatment has to be ugly too. The drugs are so toxic nurses administering the medicine that’s going directly into a patient’s bloodstream wear sturdy rubber aprons and gloves to make sure nothing spills on their bare skin. Cruden had terrific backup from his partner, his family, and

his friends. As well as care and affection he had a dream too. As far fetched as it might have seemed while he was lying in his hospital bed, he was determined to have a crack at making the NZ under-20 side for the world championships in Japan, a team coached by Rennie. Cruden says that after his treatment he “still had a couple of months to prove my fitness to Renns and the coaches, and I was lucky enough to be able to do that”. Fate had one more curve ball. In the first minutes of the final trial Cruden damaged a medial ligament. He was operated on and four weeks later was heading off to the World Cup as captain. It was just 10 months since he had been diagnosed with cancer. Rennie’s belief in Cruden stayed rock solid. “Everything we’d seen of Aaron at school and club and provincial level showed he was able to fit into the next level with ease. He’s the type of character you want involved in your group”. What was just as startling in hindsight was the steely trust in his own judgement Rennie’s decision demonstrated. It was

Rennie’s first year in charge of a national side, and if he’d got things wrong, it would have been disastrous. In fact, Cruden led his side to a magnificent victory. In the 44-28 win in the final against England he scored two tries, and kicked three conversions and a penalty. “His performance in the final was just mind boggling”, says Rennie. “I’m not sure we’d have won it without him to be honest”. How astute is Rennie? Last year Sam Cane talked with me about how clever coaching can give a team the winning edge. You won’t find anything about cleaning, or clearing out in a rule book. But a few years ago the IRB instructed referees to allow players without the ball to be knocked over if they were in the proximity of a breakdown. Rennie picked up on the possibilities ahead of anyone else. “In 2012 and 2013 our point of difference at the Chiefs (who won super titles in both those years) was the clear out,” said Cane. “The coaches we had were very smart, and we would do what we could to get an advantage. We had a simple philosophy. If there were less people on their feet there was more space to attack”.

ary good beginning should be on the speed and right in the thick of the action throughout. Hay also has Pollyantics, an in-form Rebel Kibbybones, Norman Richards and Nearis Green, while Lee will be represented by The Valiant in the last race of the day. Nearis Green will tackle a small but select field in the Geraldine Cup and with his normally excellent stand start manners, he’ll be right in contention throughout the distance of today’s feature event. Rebel Kibbybones was a big winner at Ashburton last month and then backed that up with a great effort to finish third on Show Day at Addington and as a previous winner on the Orari track looks again a big chance today. Michael Heenan holds a strong hand at various points of the day as well with his super-consistent maiden trotter, Superfast Lad and promising pacer The Black Shadow. The former was an emphatic trial winner at Methven last weekend and must

be rewarded with a victory soon, while The Black Shadow was huge on debut at Rangiora and enters the same race as The Guild, offering a strong chance of a Mid Canterbury quinella. It’s about as close as they can get to being at home, without actually being on home turf, and the Mid Canterbury contingent of horses heading just down the road to Orari today for the annual Geraldine Trotting Club November meeting look set to have plenty to say. It’s an impressive line-up of local hopes, scattered throughout the day with a Mid Canterbury-trained runner in nine of the 10 races as of last night before the emergencies for the meeting were withdrawn. In particular, the John Hay stable looks set for a big day at the office on a track which they normally perform well on, with five runners as well as one runner from the stable of Ineka Lee as well. Maiden pacer, The Guild, who has run two thirds and three seconds in his last five starts, looks a royal chance of breaking the maiden grade in a wide open pacing event near the middle of the day. The four-year-old has delivered some impressive efforts behind far better fields than he faces today and with his custom-

Simon Shuker’s Code Cracker

Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): When humans lived as tribes in caves, if you were the centre of attention, then there was a strong chance you were under attack. Public presenting is a primal fear. You’ll bravely do it anyway. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Learning occurs through action, not telling. Because you want someone to remember how to do a job or show up in a way that helps you, you’ll take the time to go through the steps together. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Your responsibilities are important but they don’t have to be heavy burdens you carry by yourself. Think this through. Assign tasks to yourself as though you were assigning them to a best friend. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’ve been doing a dance around a bit of information because you weren’t sure you wanted to know. Ask for a straight answer now. You’ll get it and know exactly how to proceed. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): This crew would have intimidated you not too long ago, and look at you now. You can hang in, mix well and be proud of what you contribute. You’ve earned your seat at the table, and you belong. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The day unfolds like a story. Take pictures so that one day, weeks from now, when the spell of the weekend has long been broken you can again conjure the magic. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Things improve because you assume a power position. This one isn’t at the front of the line, rather you’ll influence from inside the group, motivate from the middle and raise all from lowliest to the top. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Remember when you were sure it would all go wrong and then somehow it went mostly right instead? The worry is unnecessary. You can handle life and for moments you’ll even master it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Fiction has healing properties. A good story in any form can build your imagination in a way that helps you see yourself as stronger and experience your world as more manageable. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You knew it wasn’t a good choice but made it anyway. You had your reasons. Different things were weighing on you back then. Now you have the chance to right it. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Experience has led you to this point. You’ll make the power move that a less mature version of yourself wouldn’t have been capable of. No matter what happens, take a victory lap. The move is the real victory. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Your synchronistic superpowers have felt a little off lately. It’s not always true that the same person you’re thinking about is thinking about you, but it’s very true today.
