Racers’ actions upset residents BY KATIE TODD

Ashburtonians are calling on boy racers to quit the noisy night-time skids and let them sleep in peace. Residents across Hampstead, Allenton and Tinwald say they are fed up with the increasing frequency of screeches, skids and burnouts taking place outside their houses, and say it’s time the problem was addressed. Hampstead resident Indiana Rose Roberts said she and her partner had purchased a house in Nelson Street last year, but since moving in had encountered the escalating issue of disruptive driving. What was otherwise a nice area – with elderly residents, a primary school, a pool and a basketball stadium – she said was tarnished by unappealing black skid
marks. “We didn’t hear them do it back [when we first moved in], so assumed they were doing it at daytime when most people were at work,” she said. “Either way my partner and I had concerns, for the other residents, any pets that might run across the road due to being spooked, concerns about property damage, even market value for when it comes to selling our house … I think it can be more damaging than a lot of people realise.” Recently, however, she said the problem had also begun to bug her and her neighbours at night as well – keeping families awake until well after 1am. She had taken to Facebook to beg drivers to stop, and said she was ready to take evidence to the police if it continued. “I think [what] we’re all asking for is
A community built around people.
for them to stop the idiotic behaviour in idiotic places at idiotic times – and instead take their fun to areas where it can be controlled, is non-disruptive, and doesn’t put anyone at risk.” A police spokesperson said if residents are concerned about dangerous driving, the best move was to call *555 and report it. “This enables police to respond in a timely manner and manage the associated risks,” they said. “The *555 line is intended to report road incidents such as non-injury crashes, erratic driving, traffic congestion, breakdowns and obstructions on the highway … but if you come across a genuine emergency where there is real risk to someone’s life then we would always urge that you contact police via 111.”

New features for this year’s motorhome extravaganza Ashburton’s annual motorhome and caravan extravaganza is expanding to include a caravan tug, electric scooters and boats. The organisers also want to find folk with retro or renovated caravans or campers to display; not for sale but to show the tender loving care that has gone into the finished product. The show, held annually at the Ashburton Showgrounds for 14 years, was started by Bev and the late Murray Meadows, who handed the event over to the Lions Club of Ashburton last year. The pair loved being grey nomads, travelling around the country in their motorhome, which will this year be one of the vehicles for sale. Show convener Rex Whiting said the couple had done a stellar job building the show up over the years into a very popular event. Whiting said mobile homes and motorhomes would continue to be “the bread and butter” of the event, but there were some new
and UK imports, he said. There were also a number of mobile home accessory sites as well as support services, purchase advisors, insurance and finance services. This year will also see e-bikes, marine craft and towing vehicles – anything that goes hand-inhand with mobile homes. Some of the traders were coming from as far away as Auckland, Whiting said. The NZ Motor Caravan Association (Wings) will have a presence, to tell people about their network and offer a chance to renew self-containment certificates for members. A qualified person will also be on hand to renew electrical WOFs to members for a fee. Private sellers can also purchase a site to sell motor homes or boats. Whiting said a fun feature of the show was going to be the caravan or camper van pull. Teams of five are being sought to take part in the pull.

features for the 2018 extravaganza on February 17 and 18. The 2018 show was being well
supported by mobile home dealers and franchises with wellknown brands, new and used,
Entry to the extravaganza is $5 per adult and profits from the show will be distributed back to the community via the Lions club’s charitable foundation. The Lions’ food trailer will be manned by a group raising funds for local junior rugby. Whiting said the Lions wanted to grow an already vibrant and popular show, building on the Meadows’ good work. A number of the participants arrived on the Friday before the weekend, to park up and socialise before the event got under way. “There are some wonderful homes on wheels, all shapes and sizes parked around the perimeter. It is well worth wandering around over the weekend.” The South Island Motor Home and Caravan event will be open to the public from 9am to 4pm, February 17 and 18. If you want to be part of the action, contact Whiting through admin@ashburtonmotorhomeshow.co.nz or on 027 325 5349.
RDR changes fish fence design By Linda CLarke
Linda.c@theguardian.co.nz
Plans for a new fish fence that will keep native fish out of the Rangitata Diversion Race have been lodged as part of the water management company’s Klondyke Storage Pond project. Resource consent application for the $265 million project was lodged in 2016, with plans for a rock bund gallery to keep fish out, but the company continued to research other options. RDR chief executive Ben Curry said the river was challenging because of its changing flows
and glacial water and the new mechanical fish fence proposed was the gold standard in design and operation. Expert advice had been supplied by American water engineers. “We got a number of submitters that were critical of the original fish screen design,” Curry said. “Arowhenua had concerns that the rock bund gallery attracted native fish and I personally had concerns with them operationally, as they can clog with silt.” The RDR would also have to be shut down every time the
who supported the concept. People have until February 19 to make submissions to Environment Canterbury on the new plans. The complex suite resource consent applications relating to the Klondyke Storage Pond will be heard over nine days around the end of April. Curry said the pond was an important development for the RDR, which played a significant role in the social and economic wellbeing of the Canterbury community. The project includes mega
rock bund screen needed to be cleaned. Curry said the new design involved a series of rotary drum screens that turned slowly, meaning they could be individually cleaned or maintained without the race having to close. More fish would also be returned to the river, according to the application. It would need an additional two cumecs of water to operate, but that water would also be returned to the river. He said the new design had also been presented to anglers,

Water could also be released into other waterways, like the Ashburton River, in times of very low flow. “If this does not go ahead, you will see smaller less efficient storage.” Curry said plans for the mechanical fish screen would survive in the event consent was denied as the existing bio acoustic fence was not performing to expectations.

■ ASHBURTON MUSEUM
Bid for extra museum staff shot down By Sue NewmaN
for collections and the other was about making connections with the community. I think we carry a lot of risk. We have very large and complex collections and a very large number of stakeholders,” she said The museum was responsible for large and often quite complex collections, including a social history collection that was managed under a memorandum of understanding with the Ashburton Museum and Historical Society who held the collection in trust on behalf of the community. It was one of the larger collections in the South Island with more than 20,000 objects and more than six million photographic frames. In addition there was archaeological material, community archives and a reference library but there was no dedicated staff member to manage those collections. Moving forward, Robinson said she was keeping a much tighter rein on what was accepted and brought into the museum as a collection. “But this is the nature of collections when they’re transferred from a voluntary model to a professional model.” She requested an additional $50,000 to fund the new staff member but councillors weren’t interested. z
Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton Museum manager Tanya Robinson hit a brick wall when she asked the Ashburton District Council to provide her with an additional staff member. Robinson made a bid for funds to employ a collections registrar, a job she said was essential if the council wanted to ensure collections given by the community to the museum were well documented. The position would also help the museum achieve benchmarking against the New Zealand Museum standards scheme. That request prompted councillor Russell Ellis to suggest it was time for the user pays concept to arrive at the museum. “If you want to visit the museum, you pay and this funds the extra staff member,” he said. Selwyn Price did not agree. “It’s well documented internationally that wherever they’ve tried to put admission charges in place, the number of people visiting dropped dramatically,” he said. Stuart Wilson questioned how many staff the museum needed. A new person had been funded last year, he said. The two roles were very different, Robinson said. “This role is about caring

Cleansing diets a fad, says nutritionist By SuSaN SaNdyS
SuSan.S@theguaridan.co.nz
Ditch that water bottle you buy from the supermarket as soon as possible, and forget about cleansing diets. That is some of the advice from new Mid Canterbury nutritionist Vera Krizova. The 32-year-old has this month set up Vera Nutrition Clinic at the Methven Mountain Gym, becoming what she believes is Mid Canterbury’s only nutritionist operating in the district. Krizova said cleansing diets, which can take many forms generally requiring the consumption of juices or drinks to remove body toxins, were a recent trend in Europe, and were now becoming so in New Zealand. However, they were no more than a fad, and Mid Cantabrians would be better to “eat the rainbow”, as in food of a wide range of colours from unprocessed and unpackaged sources.
“It’s not necessary for your body because your body can clean itself,” Krizova said. Drinking heaps of water was also her advice, and Mid Canterbury’s tap water was as good a source as any. When buying bottled water this should be transferred from the PET bottles in which it was sold, to another container, as soon as possible. PETs are considered safe foodgrade plastics, however some research has suggested they can be harmful to health. Krizova and her partner Roman came to New Zealand six years ago from their home in the Czech Republic . “We didn’t plan to stay, but we did,” Krizova said. The couple gained residency late last year, meaning Krizova could fulfil her dream of opening the nutritionist clinic. She had operated a similar business in her home country after gaining a degree in regeneration and nutrition.

In her first two weeks she had found herself to be incredibly busy, with clients coming from Methven, Ashburton and as far away as Darfield. Krizova said she will do individualised meal plans with her clients, first sending them a questionnaire to find out about their lifestyle and food intake. She said the human body could be compared to a car, in that if its owner ran it on good oil and looked after it, it would serve them for decades to come. “Your body is the same, junk food and processed food, you can expect your body isn’t going to be working the way you would love to. You may feel tired, and moody,” she said. “Food is really closely linked to mental health,” she added. Krizova operated on the 80/20 philosophy, in that nutrition was 80 per cent of the component of good health, and exercise the remaining 20 per cent.

Ashburton District Council yesterday lifted the precautionary boil water notice in place for Montalto. Residents connected to this scheme are advised they are safe to consume the water as normal, after monitoring equipment detected high levels of turbidity in the supply on January 6. Turbidity lowers the effectiveness of water treatment equipment, and council issued the notice as a precautionary measure.
Silver bangle found Ashburton Police are hoping to reunite a silver bangle with its owner after it was found last year. The three-quarter, silver bangle was discovered and handed into police in November. It has engraving on the inside and police would dearly love to reunite it with its owner. Anyone who feels the bangle may be theirs can collect it from the Ashburton Police Station on Havelock Street.
Sewage soils beaches Two Auckland beaches have been soiled with sewage after torrential rain earlier yesterday caused flash floods and chaos on the North Shore. A wastewater overflow was detected by Auckland Council after the heavy downpour. Two swim alerts – in Castor Bay and Milford on the North Shore – came into effect yesterday due to a “high risk” water quality. Swimmers were advised to avoid the water. Just over 62mm of rain fell between 8am and 9am yesterday - the wettest hour in at least eight years. - NZME

■ WILLOWBY DRIVEWAY
Silk trees put on spectacular flower display BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A couple living in Willowby believe they currently have the “prettiest driveway in the whole of Ashburton.” Marie Cousens and Ted Allen’s nine flowering Albizia julibrissin trees are attracting compliments aplenty – and a number of visitors to their Boundary Road property. More commonly known as Persian Silk Trees, the plants feature fern-like foliage and soft, fluffy, pink flowers. Cousens said the trees were planted by Rodney Williams of the Lakeway Nursery some years ago, and have not taken much work to upkeep. But in a rare, weather-related occurrence, the trees have flowered twice in the matter of two weeks. “We’ve had quite a few people coming and looking at them – my doctor, our lawyers …” she said. “And each morning from my window I watch Ted walk the 100 yards out to the letterbox and stop and admire them.” Right – Marie Cousens and Ted Allen’s driveway has become a Silk Tree spectacle. ■ BACK TO SCHOOL
Financial cost grows higher BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Parents feeling the crunch of back-toschool costs are being encouraged to put their hand up for help if they need it. As term 1 rolls around, families are forking out for uniforms, bags, devices and school donations, along with stationery packs and other supplies. According to the ASG Planning for Education Index, the total cost of fees, extracurricular activities, school supplies and devices will add up to around $2160 for a child going to a New Zealand state primary school and $3152 for a child going to a state secondary school throughout 2018. For state-integrated and private schools, this figure can be more than 10 times higher. For organisations like Ashburton’s Salvation Army, this means an inevitable influx of families feeling the crunch over the next couple of weeks. “As a parent, it does become a burden,” said Salvation Army Community Ministries Co-ordinator Judith Lilley. “Sometimes you’ve got to make a choice between buying stationery and putting food on the table.” She said it would be particularly tough for parents with new students at Ashburton College, who from this year are asked to bring their own laptop or tablet. However, she said there are agencies around Ashburton able to provide help to families finding it tough, and a number of ways to purchase secondhand uniforms
and goods – including at the Salvation Army Family Store. Methven Primary School Principal Chris Murphy said his school had a fund to support parents who were struggling. “We’ve got a couple of groups and we’re very grateful for the help they provide parents,” he said. “All parents need to do is ask, and it’s all completely confidential,” he said. At Ashburton Borough School a secondhand uniform sale has been organised for Friday, between 9am to 1pm at their office. Tinwald School PTA also operate a secondhand uniform rack out of their office, and so does the Ashburton College Uniform Shop. Ashburton College have also purchased a number of devices for students unable to bring their own. And for other schools around the region, the Facebook page Mid Canterbury Uniform Buy, Sell, Swap also contains listings for dozens of uniform items for primary and secondary schools around the district.

‘None of us are perfect’ Well-known New Zealand actor and sex offender Lee Rene Naufahu has been sentenced to one year of home detention for indecently assaulting female students. Naufahu, 47, was sentenced in the Auckland District Court yesterday after pleading guilty to six indecent assault charges in September last year. The judge said home detention, rather than a prison term, would better suit Naufahu’s efforts towards rehabilitation. He initially denied the offending and his admission came a week before the actor was due to go on trial. The Crown dropped 13 other charges against the former Shortland Street actor. The offending took place between 2011 to 2013 at Naufahu’s Auckland acting classes. The court heard that Naufahu told the victims that they were “very talented actors and wanted to develop their talents”. Crown prosecutor Kirsten Lummis said Naufahu had a “position of authority” over his victims, aged 18-24 at the time of the offending, who were in a vulnerable situation. “It is the combination of age and the position of authority that makes it significant. It is widely recognised that a teacher-student relationship creates a power imbalance,” she said. “It is this type of imbalance that the ‘MeToo’ campaign has highlighted in recent times.” Lummis told the court Naufahu had planned and premeditated the grooming of his victims, which added to the “scale of the offending and the intrusiveness”. She said the actor’s “deliberate course of conduct” showed he ”[preyed] on the vulnerability and breach of trust for each of these victims”. There was a level of victim blaming from Naufahu as his students came forward with their allegations, Lummis said, also questioning the authenticity of Naufahu’s remorse after he changed his plea. “The remorse seems to come from the concerns and impact on his own life,” she said. When Naufahu lost his name suppression he courted significant media attention, Lummis said. A “very deliberate press release” and other interviews with the press were often used for his own advantage – and were confronting and concerning for the victims, she said. Naufahu’s lawyer Ron Mansfield said his client was a “passionate actor” whose enthusiasm for the craft became personal and the lines were blurred. Mansfield rejected the Crown’s claim that Naufahu had groomed his victims. “The exercises that he performed within those acting classes are recognised as legitimate exercises,” the lawyer told the court. “Their talent was recognised, he sought to foster it, but abused their trust. “He’s certainly not seeking to victim blame, he’s seeking to put what happened into context,” Mansfield said. The lawyer said there had been a lot of unavoidable media attention surrounding the case but that his client “hasn’t courted that, he’s responded to that”. However, Judge Robert Ronayne interrupted Mansfield to ask: “Was it avoidable to say publicly that the allegations were ridiculous and ludicrous?” The judge was referring to statements

made by Naufahu about his case before his change of plea. Naufahu hopes to continue his career in the film and entertainment industry but in a more creative role, the court heard. “He still has a lot to give,” Mansfield added. Judge Ronayne said Naufahu’s “manipulative nature was apparent” and that the victims had suffered feelings of shame and guilt. “They of course have no reason to feel any guilt whatsoever, you are the guilty one,” the judge told the actor, who sat with his hands clasped in the dock. The judge said he had to consider Naufahu’s lack of relevant prior convictions, contributions to the film industry, and was asked by Mansfield to give a discount for remorse and for the guilty pleas. However, Judge Ronayne said the actor had been “indulging in an exercise in minimising your culpability” and shifting some blame to the victims. “Any honestly held belief that there was consent to the assaults would be a defence – instead you have, with legal advice, pleaded guilty,” the judge said. “There was a degree of grooming,” he added. “You publicly shamed victims by denying the offending.” After Naufahu’s guilty pleas the actor again went public and apologised to his fans for his offending, which he blamed on passion. “In my view, publicly minimising the offending,” Judge Ronayne said. “Cases in New Zealand are not tried in the press.” After the sentencing Naufahu provided a statement to the press which read: ” I am relieved that this prosecution is now behind the complainants and myself. “We can all now move forward and heal, where this is required,” he said. “I now realise that my behaviour at that time wasn’t always professional and appropriate, even though then I thought it was. “I let my professional passion for the art of acting become personal and the lines between the two became blurred and my conduct at times with some students became unprofessional and wrong.” The case had been “a brutal learning curve, one that has caused me to assess my past professional and personal conduct”, he said. “None of us are perfect and there is always room for growth.” In 2001, Naufahu was convicted of common assault and willful damage and was fined by the court. - NZME

OUR VIEW
Leave her pregnancy alone
Matt Markham
EDITOR
A
nyone else sick and tired of hearing about how our Prime Minister is pregnant
yet? While it is fantastic that Jacinda Ardern and her partner are expecting their first child, do we really need to have it shoved down our throats at every crossroad? Surely not? People get pregnant all the time without fanfare and just because she is our nation’s leader, doesn’t mean Ardern should be treated any different. But it appears that the travelling circus is going to follow her every step of the way and even this newspaper will probably jump on board when little Helen Jennifer or John Winston is born later this year – but until then, no thanks. The rigmarole will grow tiresome for her too I would imagine. Interviews regarding immigration, tax cuts and the current economic climate of New Zealand will be interjected with questions around the Prime Minister’s waddle, whether or not her feet are swelling and what products she is using to counter the stretch marks. The New Zealand TAB should open a market on how many mornings she’s late to work because of morning sickness, or how many times a reporter asks her what the sex of the child is going to be. In fact, the TAB if they had any idea at all, would open a market on potential names for the wee cherub. Betting agencies across the world often engage in such markets – particularly when it comes to well-known identities, so why not here in New Zealand? Because I reckon I know more than a few people who would have a wager. My two suggestions would clearly both have to be in the market and the odds of Helen being somewhere in the mix should baby be a girl will be reasonably short you would imagine. While I realise that I am in fact doing exactly what I wish news agencies wouldn’t do by speaking about the Prime Minister’s pregnancy, I am simply getting my concerns off my chest. As I have said, it is wonderful news and I do wish them the best with the pregnancy, but let’s not be informed of every little step along the way. Please.

Our long term plan T
he countdown is on for the next phase of the It’s Our Place consultation for council’s Long Term Plan. In April, the draft version of the Long Term Plan (LTP) will be released. It outlines what council will do in the district over the next 10 years and how those activities will be funded. We were pleased with the response we received from the community last year with the It’s Our Place surveys. Our elected members were out and about all over the district at community events and meetings helping promote this innovative approach. We received more than 2200 ideas from 660 respondents about what they would like to see happen in our district. The great thing about It’s Our Place is that it acted like a funnel. All of your ideas were gathered at the top in the first round of surveys, then filtered down into categories for the second round, before being made into priorities for the third round. Currently council is seeking feedback on the Draft Revenue and Financing Policy and the Draft Development and Financial Contributions Policy. They may not sound like the most exciting things but, as with
Donna Favel
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
all council policies, they play a significant role in how our district operates. As ratepayers, your feedback on these draft policies is very important and the council wants to hear from you about the changes being proposed. Submissions on these two draft policies close on February 19. Once they have been through the policy hearings and finalisation process, they will be adopted by council and included in the draft LTP. Then it will be over to you. In April, the draft LTP will be open for your feedback, through It’s Our Place, before being adopted and implemented. I want to take this opportunity to share some information with you about the two draft policies. The Draft Revenue and Financing Policy outlines how council funds services and activities. One of the significant alterations in this policy is a proposal
to change Lake Hood’s amenity rating from rural to urban. The services provided at Lake Hood such as street lighting, footpaths, and parks and reserves are more in line with the level of service in the urban Ashburton area rather than rural areas, so we suggest rating them accordingly. In order to keep things fair across the district, we feel making this change is the best approach. The draft policy also sets out how community pools, grants and funding, memorial halls and reserve boards, community safety, and democracy activities are funded through rates. There are also proposed changes to fees for the EA Networks Centre. The Draft Development and Financial Contributions Policy includes the provision for council to charge new infrastructure developments. Council currently charges a development contribution for new builds to cover the delivery of services including drinking water and wastewater removal. It also charges for new community infrastructure such as the EA Networks Centre. One of the main changes proposed in the draft policy is raising the development contri-
butions charged for community infrastructure and capping this at $2500 plus GST. Another proposed change is to align all development contribution charges for water and wastewater services so they happen at the time a building consent application is lodged. This will make it easier to comply with council requirements. With both of these draft policies, council wanted to make the changes as fair as possible. Consultation booklets, which summarise and explain the changes to both policies, are available on the council’s website www.ashburtondc.govt.nz or from the council office. I encourage you to read the changes and share your thoughts with us online or through the feedback page included in the booklet. Submissions for both of these policies close on February 19, so make sure you have your say before then, so that we can consider your thoughts for the future of our place. ‘Sister survivor warriors’ The judge overseeing the sentencing of disgraced former sports doctor Larry Nassar said that more than 120 girls and women who had given statements so far at the five-day hearing were “sister survivor warriors”. “I want you to know that your face and the face of all of the sister survivor warriors – the whole army of you – I’ve heard your words,” Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said after a woman spoke in her Michigan courtroom. “Your sister survivors and you are going through incomprehensible lengths, emotions and soul-searching to put your words together, to publicly stop (the) defendant, to publicly stop predators, to make people listen.” Nassar, 54, has admitted molesting athletes during medical treatment when he was employed by Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics announced the resignations of three key leaders days after former gold medallists Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber said in court that Nassar had sexually assaulted them. USA Gymnastics also said it has suspended former US women’s national team coach John Geddert, the owner of the Twistars gymnastics club near Lansing, Michigan. It did not disclose its reasons for suspending Geddert. Nassar has already been sentenced to 60 years in prison

Under a plea deal, he faces a minimum prison sentence of 25 to 40 years in the molestation case. “Larry, how many of us are there? Do you even know?” asked Clasina Syrboby, as she fought back tears while speaking for more than 20 minutes. “You preyed on me, on us. You saw a way to take advantage of your position – the almighty and trusted gymnastics doctor. Shame on you
Larry. Shame on you.” She and other victims also continued their criticism of Michigan State, USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic Committee for not doing enough to stop Nassar when initial complaints were made years ago. Emma Ann Miller, 15, said the school was still billing her mother for medical appointments in which Nassar molested Miller as recently as August 2016 – a week before he was fired.
University spokesman Jason Cody told The Associated Press that Miller’s allegation was being addressed. “I can tell you that patients of former MSU physician Larry Nassar will not be billed,” Cody said. Michigan State’s gymnastics coach – who is accused of downplaying complaints made by two teens in 1997 – and another university sports doctor quit under pressure last year. But the governing board has stood behind university President Lou Anna Simon, despite calls from legislative leaders and others that she resign or be fired. In her statement to the court, Miller directly addressed Michigan State. “I, like all those that have spoken, didn’t choose this circumstance to have the right to be standing in front of this podium today,” she said. “Nassar made that choice for us – your 20-year child-molesting employee.” A Title IX probe conducted by the university cleared Nassar of sexual assault allegations in 2014. At least 12 reported assaults occurred after the investigation ended. The school let Nassar see patients for 16 months while the campus police also conducted a criminal investigation into the allegations. One of the eight members of Michigan State’s governing board said over the weekend that Simon should quit, saying he did not think she could survive the “public outcry”. – AP

Volcano spewing lava fountains, ash plumes The Philippines’ most active volcano has spewed fountains of lava and massive ash plumes overnight Monday after authorities warned a violent eruption may be imminent. The lava fountains reached up to 700 metres above Mount Mayon’s crater and ash plumes rose up to 3 kilometres from Monday night to before daybreak Tuesday. An explosive eruption Monday was the most powerful
since the volcano started acting up more than a week ago. Disaster officials in Albay province, where Mayon lies, say more than 30,000 people are staying in evacuation centres. Officials raised Mayon’s alert level to four on a scale of five, meaning a violent eruption is possible within hours or days. The danger zone expanded to 8 kilometres from the crater, affecting thousands more residents. – AP

Demonstrators force US embassy to close The US Embassy in the Haitian capital closed earlier this week as demonstrators gathered outside to protest President Donald Trump. More than 1000 people marched toward the embassy. They were prevented from
reaching the gates by barricades set up by Haitian police. Officers in helmets and carrying shields eventually fired several rounds of tear gas after some protesters threw rocks at them outside the heavily fortified compound.
Many Haitians were angered over reported disparaging remarks about Haiti by Trump and his administration’s decision to end a programme that gave temporary legal residency to about 60,000 Haitians in the United States.
The embassy said it would be closed for the afternoon and directed employees in a statement to keep away during the protest. It was expected to reopen quickly. – AP
Eugenie engaged Britain’s Princess Eugenie and her long-term boyfriend Jack Brooksbank’s engagement has been greeted with joy by her parents the Duke and Duchess of York. Andrew and Sarah both spoke of the happiness they feel following the announcement, which was marked by the release of a series of engagement photographs. The pictures were taken in Buckingham Palace’s picture gallery. The Duke said: “I’m just completely overjoyed for them and wish them every happiness,” while Sarah issued a series of tweets and in one echoed Andrew’s words, writing “total joy”.

With more than 140 TV and film credits to her name, Sawyer was known as Hollywood’s oldest working actress who worked through late 2017. Sawyer was born on November 27, 1912, in Pueblo. Her career in entertainment began at the age of eight when she won a talent contest in Oakland. To many, she is recognised as the lady in Dumb and Dumber who stole Jim Carrey’s character’s wallet. She also appeared in The Pineapple Express, as well as When Harry Met Sally. She also had numerous TV credits which span six decades.
Judge Judy being sued Judge Judy is being sued by two women who claim they helped develop her show but haven’t been reaping the financial rewards. TMZ reported that the Estate of Sandi Spreckman and Kaye Switzer are suing the hugely popular judge and CBS. In the lawsuit, they said they helped bring the show to fruition in 1995. In fact, they imply that they basically discovered Judy. The two were staffers on The People’s Court with Judge Wapner. They say they set up the meeting between Judy and Larry Little, the show’s producer, TMZ says. They were reportedly dismissed early on. The women are asking for at least $US4.75 million.

Fighting rages in Kurdish Syria Intense fighting flared Monday as Turkish troops and their allies advanced on a Kurdish enclave in northwestern Syria, the third day of Ankara’s offensive to oust a US-allied Kurdish militia from the area, according to the militia and a war monitoring group. Skirmishes between Turkish troops and Kurdish fighters also broke out farther east in Syria, threatening to widen the scope of the new front in the Syrian war that pits Turkey against Washington’s main ally in the region. The Turkish ground and air offensive on Afrin, codenamed Operation Olive Branch, began Saturday, raising tensions in the already-complicated Syrian conflict and threatening to further strain ties between Turkey and the US, both NATO allies. Turkey says it aims to create a 30-kilometre deep “secure zone” in Afrin, the Kurdish-controlled enclave on its border. The Turkish military announced late Monday its first fatality to the operation. It said a soldier was killed in a cross-border raid. The UN Security Council was scheduled to convene to discuss the situation. A NATO statement said it has contacted Turkey over the offensive. NATO said Turkey has suffered from terrorism and has the

NATO also said it has no presence in Syria but that as members of the anti-Islamic State coalition, “our focus is on the defeat” of the extremists. US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Turkey has “legitimate security concerns” about Syria. Mattis said Ankara gave the US military advance notice of its Afrin offensive. The US has offered direct military and logistical support to a
Kurdish-led group known as the Syrian Democratic Forces that spearheaded the fight against Isis in Syria. That announcement has outraged Turkey, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has tried to walk back the US position, saying it was portrayed incorrectly. The US is discussing with Turkey and others the possibility of setting up a security zone on the Syria border to address Turkey’s concerns about a Kurdish enclave there, Tillerson said while travelling in Europe.
Such a zone could help stabilise the situation and meet Turkey’s legitimate concerns over security, he said. But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to expand the operation, threatening to push farther east to the town of Manbij to the east, which the Kurdish fighters had liberated of Islamic State militants in 2016 and currently administer. Erdogan said in Ankara that his country will “not take a step back” from its Afrin offensive. – AP
Former football star Liberia’s new president
George Weah
Ashburton Guardian
Former international football star George Weah has been sworn into office as Liberia’s new president, taking over from Africa’s first female leader of this post-war, impoverished West African nation. The 51-year-old, who was FIFA’s 1995 player of the year, took the oath dressed in all white at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex to cheers from tens of thousands Liberians. “I fully believe that the overwhelming mandate that I received from the Liberian people is a mandate to end corruption in public service; I promise to deliver on this mandate,” he said. “As officials of government it
is time to put the interest of our people above our own selfish interests. It is time to be honest with our people.” Weah, who has been a senator and run for the presidency before but is relatively new to national politics, inherits a weak economy along with poor health and educational sectors. “I do not promise you quick fixes or miracles. Instead my pledge to you today is that my administration, with your help, will make steady and deliver progress toward achieving the hopes and aspirations that you cherish in your heart for Mama Liberia,” he said. Weah then switched seats with
his predecessor, Nobel Peace Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who was president for 12 years, lifting Liberia from the destruction of back-to-back civil wars and facing the challenge of the Ebola crisis that killed thousands. Liberia’s flag was lowered and folded to signify the end of the presidency for Sirleaf, who stood with Weah on a raised platform. A new flag was unfolded and hoisted to signify the start of Weah’s new administration. This is Liberia’s first peaceful transfer of power from one government to another in more than 70 years. – AP

Solar panel tariffs President Donald Trump is approving tariffs on imported solar-energy components and large washing machines in a bid to help US manufacturers. The administration is imposing an immediate tariff of 30 per cent on most imported solar modules. For large residential washing machines, tariffs will start at up to 50 per cent and phase out after three years. The US solar industry is split over the issue. A large number of companies that install solar-power systems say their costs will rise and jobs will be lost. –AP

■ THE GULF WIDENS
In brief
The rich getting richer The gulf between the world’s richest and poorest people is widening, Oxfam has claimed, with a report by the charity revealing that 42 people hold the same amount of wealth as the 3.7 billion people who make up the poorest half of the world’s population. The report, published to coincide with the first day of the World Economic Forum in Davos – which is often criticised for being little more than a talking shop for the rich and powerful – said that 82 per cent of the wealth generated last year across the world went to the richest 1 per cent of the global population, while the 3.7 billion poorest citizens saw their wealth “flatline”, according to the Daily Telegraph. Oxfam said it was “unacceptable and unsustainable” for economies to continue to enable a super-rich minority to accumulate vast wealth while hundreds of millions of people struggle to survive on poverty pay. It called for a rethink of legal and business models that pri-
oritise shareholder returns over broader social impact, highlighting how the “excessive corporate influence on policy-making, erosion of workers’ rights and relentless drive to minimise costs in order to maximise returns to investors all contribute to a widen-
ing gap between the super-rich and the rest of society”. According to its report, billionaire wealth rose by an average of 13 per cent a year between 2006 and 2015 – six times faster than the wages of ordinary workers. It takes just four days for a CEO
of one of the world’s five biggest fashion retailers to earn as much as a Bangladeshi garment worker will earn in her entire lifetime, the report added. Separate figures released this month by The High Pay Centre show that in 2017 it took just three days for the UK’s top bosses to make more money than the typical British full-time worker will earn all year. Mark Goldring, Oxfam’s chief executive, said: “Something is very wrong with a global economy that allows the 1 per cent to enjoy the lion’s share of increases in wealth while the poorest half of humanity miss out. “The concentration of extreme wealth at the top is not a sign of a thriving economy but a symptom of a system that is failing the millions of hard-working people on poverty wages who make our clothes and grow our food.” In 2017 Oxfam calculated that the world’s eight wealthiest people owned as much wealth as the poorest half of the world. - NZME

NZ guest nights rise New Zealand guest nights rose 4.3 per cent in November from a year earlier as the number of international visitors, buoyed by more people from across the Tasman, helped lift the occupancy rate of the nation’s accommodation. Total guest nights increased to 3.41 million in November from 3.27 million a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said. Of that, international guest nights rose 5.6 per cent to 1.67 million, outpacing a 3.1 per cent gain in domestic accommodation stays to 1.73 million. - NZME

Netflix rockets ahead Netflix earnings rose significantly from a year ago as the company shot past estimates set by Wall Street. Bloomberg reported that Netflix signed up 8.33 million customers in the fourth quarter, well ahead of estimates set at 6.34 million. This growth saw the company post net income of $US186 million for the fourth quarter. While the international market accounted for a large chunk of overall growth, the company added 1.98 million customers in the US market. This was also up on the 1.29 million estimate set by Wall Street. Netflix now has a worldwide audience of 117.6 million customers worldwide. Sales grew by a third to $3.29 billion as the company grew its customer base in both US and global markets. This growth was in part attributed to Stranger Things, which in its second season again attracted a massive audience of
viewers across the world. The company shows no indication of slowing down, committing to an US$8b investment in programming for 2018. Bloomberg reports that shares in the company rose 7.2 per cent to $244 in extended trading. Overall, stock has gained 15 per cent this year. Bloomberg said that Netflix now has an overall market value of $97b, four times that of CBS Corporation, the owner of the most-watched TV network. These strong results came in spite of a $US39m write-off for unreleased content in the fourth quarter. Bloomberg reported that the company fired Kevin Spacey from House of Cards and also cancelled a planned movie after his accusations of sexual misconduct. Data from researcher Roy Morgan released last year showed that two in five New Zealanders were using SVOD services and that over a million New Zealanders had access to Netflix. - NZME

It’s a picnic time of year T
he unbelievably beautiful summer weather we’re being treated to week after week inspires meals outdoors, meals beside rivers and at the beach. And there’s nothing nicer than unpacking a picnic lunch, particularly one where all the work has been done before leaving home. Pies and quiches fall into that easy-to-eat-outdoors basket. With a block of shortcrust pastry or for those with time a block of home-made pastry, you’re halfway there when it comes to picnic food. Dream up a tasty filling, roll out the pastry, fill the tin, bake and head for your favourite picnic spot.
■ Roll out pastry to thin layer. ■ Line each tartlet tin with pastry slightly larger than the tins. ■ Press the pastry into the fluted edge. ■ Allow the excess to fall over the top edge and run the rolling pin over the tops of the tins to trim. ■ Re-roll the pastry off-cuts until you’ve lined all your tins. ■ Put in the fridge again for 30 mins or until firm. ■ Line the tart cases with baking parchment and baking beans, then bake for 10 mins. ■ Remove the paper and beans, and
Simple sausage pie 400g puff pastry 2T oil 1 onion, chopped finely 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 celery stalks, sliced thinly 1/2 t mixed herbs 500g sausage meat 1T worcestershire sauce 2t salt 1/2 C chutney 2T chopped parsley 1 egg, lightly beaten for glazing ■ Preheat an oven to 180°C. Grease and flour a 20cm x 20cm square tin. ■ Roll three-quarters of the pastry on a lightly-floured bench to fit base and sides of your tin. ■ Roll remainder to fit over top of pie tin. ■ Heat oil in a frying pan. ■ Add onion, garlic and celery, cooking for 4 or 5 minutes until the celery is soft. ■ Place onion mix in a large bowl with herbs and sausage meat. ■ Add worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, chutney and parsley. ■ Combine well using your hands. ■ Place mixture into pie tin, spreading evenly and smoothing the top. ■ Place pastry over the top. ■ Dampen and press the edges together. Brush top with the egg. ■ Bake for 50 minutes until the pastry is golden and the pie cooked.
Tomato and pancetta quiche 1 pkt puff pastry 400g pack cherry tomatoes on the vine Olive oil, for drizzling 90g pack thin pancetta rashers 100g parmesan, grated 3 eggs, plus 5 egg yolks 250ml double cream 1/2 small pack basil, finely chopped 10 tartlet tins ■ Heat oven to 200°C. ■ Put the tomatoes in a roasting tin, drizzle with a little olive oil and season. ■ Roast for 25-30 mins until they start to shrink and darken, then remove and leave to cool. ■ Dry-fry the pancetta until crisp and golden. ■ Set aside on a plate lined with kitchen paper and leave to cool.

bake for a further five minutes until just turning lightly golden. Brush with egg white. Scatter half the grated cheese and crumble the crispy pancetta into each tart case. Add roasted tomatoes, then top with the remaining cheese. Beat eggs, the cream and some black pepper. Add the basil and beat again to combine. Put a baking tray in the oven to heat up. Put the quiches on the hot tray resting on the oven shelf. Pour the egg mix over the filling until the cases are full. Bake for 20-25 mins until golden and puffed up. Allow to cool, then chill in the fridge until ready to serve.
Italian tarts 2 sheets thawed flaky pastry 1/2 t salt 250g small, ripe tomatoes 8 leaves basil, roughly shredded 2 cloves garlic, crushed, peeled and chopped 1/2 t marjoram, dried 2T olive oil 1T water 100g feta, crumbled 2T tomato paste 1 red onion, small 1/2 red pepper 1 courgette 1t dried basil, or basil pesto Freshly ground black pepper, to season ■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Lay the first sheet of pastry on a lightly oiled or non-stick sprayed baking sheet. ■ Brush the surface lightly with water, then lay the second sheet exactly on top. ■ Roll or press the two sheets
lightly together. ■ Without cutting right through the pastry, run a sharp knife around the sheet about 1.5 to 2cm inside the edge, marking out a smaller square. ■ Mix together the tomato paste, dried basil or pesto, water and marjoram. ■ Season with salt and pepper. ■ Spread over the surface of the smaller square. ■ Cut each of the tomatoes and the onion into wedges. ■ Slice the pepper into strips about 1cm wide. ■ Halve the courgette lengthwise and cut into thin (5mm) ribbons. ■ Combine the vegetables, garlic and basil leaves in a bowl. ■ Add the olive oil and stir gently until the vegetables are well mixed and evenly coated with oil. ■ Arrange the prepared vegetables over the paste-covered base. ■ Sprinkle with crumbled feta and season well. ■ Bake at 200°C for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

■ Heat oven to 190°C. ■ Roll out pastry and line the base and sides of a 21-22cm deep flan tin or 20cm spring form cake tin. ■ Trim the edges and chill the tart case while you prepare the filling. ■ Hard boil eggs and cool, then peel. ■ Chop the parsley and thyme. ■ Tip the sausage meat into a large bowl.
■ Add half the herbs, a little salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper. ■ Press a third of the sausage meat over the base of the pastry case. ■ Make a circular depression in the sausage meat. ■ Trim the ends off each egg and line them up to form a ring of egg. ■ Cover with the remaining sausage meat, forming a smooth dome and making sure the eggs are completely covered. ■ Mix the remaining herbs with the breadcrumbs and oil, and sprinkle evenly over the pie. ■ Place on a baking sheet and bake for 1 hour until the pastry is golden, the filling cooked and the topping crisp and golden. ■ Leave the pie to cool in the tin.
Spinach and potato pies 1 pkt puff pastry 1 small baking potato, peeled and cut into small chunks 200g spinach 150ml single cream 1 egg, beaten 100g cheddar cheese, grated Grated fresh nutmeg ■ Boil the potato for 10 mins until cooked, then drain well. ■ Wilt spinach, then squeeze out all the liquid. ■ Mix spinach with the potatoes, cream, egg and two-thirds of the cheese. ■ Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg, then set aside. ■ Heat oven to 200°C (fan 180°C). ■ Roll the pastry out on a floured surface to 2mm thickness. ■ Cut out 8 squares, approximately 13 x 13cm. ■ Spoon the mix into the centre of each square. ■ Brush the edges with the beaten egg. ■ Bring all four corners together over the filling, pinching the edges together to make a sealed purse. Transfer to a baking tray. ■ Brush each pie generously with
egg, then top with a large pinch of grated cheese. ■ Bake for 30 mins until golden and the cheese has melted, then leave to cool slightly.
Broccoli and courgette quiche 160g shortcrust pastry, rolled to 5mm thick 20g butter 1 courgette, finely grated Salt and pepper 100g broccoli, cut into small florets 2 free-range eggs 180ml milk 50g cheddar, grated ■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Line a 20cm tin with the pastry, then place in the fridge for 30 minutes. ■ Line the pastry with baking parchment and fill with baking beans. ■ Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the pastry is dry. ■ Remove the baking parchment and beans. ■ Return the pastry case to the oven for a further 3-5 minutes and turn the oven down to 180°C. ■ Heat a frying pan until hot. ■ Add the butter and courgette and cook until golden-brown. ■ Season with salt and black pepper, then drain through a sieve to remove any excess moisture. ■ Blanch the broccoli in a pan of boiling water for 1-2 minutes. ■ Drain, then refresh in a bowl of ice-cold water and drain once more. ■ Add to the cooked courgette and toss to combine. ■ Scatter over the bottom of the pastry case. ■ Place the eggs and milk in a bowl, season with salt and black pepper and whisk well. ■ Add half the cheese and whisk once more. ■ Pour over the egg and milk mixture on top of the vegetables. ■ Scatter the remaining cheese over the top. ■ Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes, or until golden-brown, bubbling and just set.

In brief Diamonds beat England The Diamonds are the only undefeated team after victory over England in London as they bid for a third netball Quad Series title. Australia prevailed 50-46 in a hard-fought tussle yesterday at London’s Copper Box Arena. Pope’s miracle haul An eight-wicket haul from legspinner Lloyd Pope has handed Australia a miracle quarter-final win over England in the under-19s cricket World Cup. Defending 127, Australia were facing one of their earliest exits from the tournament as their opponents raced to 0-45 from seven overs. That was before the leggie snaffled 8-35 from 9.4 overs – the best spell in an Under-19 World Cup – to skittle England for just 96. - AAP

■ BOWLS
Methven bowlers on target By Matt MarkhaM
Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz
A major piece of Canterbury Bowls silverware made its way back to Mid Canterbury on the weekend in what is believed to be a first for the Methven Bowling Club. Their men’s fours side of Craig Carter, Brent Mayson, Rob Fensom and Bruce Redmond claimed the coveted Centre Men’s Fours title on finals day at the Woolston Park Bowling Club. The quartet qualified for postsection play by winning the required two of their three games
and then waltzed their way through the post section stage to meet a strong foursome from the Canterbury 2017 Club to claim the trophy. “It was a tight game, it went down to the last bowl,” Mayson said. “We held the shot and they had a chance to win it, but luckily for us they weren’t able to convert. “It’s a big result and it is always nice to go up there and win something from the city folk. “Players from around here are getting better and better at doing it and they’re starting to notice.”
The side will now focus their attention on the next stage of the competition which will see them play a regional playoff from which they can qualify to go to the national final later in the season. Mayson and Carter are well seasoned bowlers with a good list of successes from their time on the greens, but for Fensom and Redmond it was an important result as they still sit very much in the infancy of their bowling careers. Fensom enjoyed a successful weekend as he also finished run-
ner-up in the Under Eight Year Men’s Singles. In the final he played fellow Mid Cantabrian Mat Bassett, who plays out of the Elmwood Park Club in Christchurch. “Rob played really well,” Mayson said. “Mat was always going to be a tough one to beat because he’s a very good bowler so his effort was very good.” Bowls action in Mid Canterbury heats up again this weekend with post-section play in the Sub Centre Pairs on the Ashburton MSA green on Saturday.
Star England cricketer Ben Stokes will skip his side’s opening match on New Zealand soil in February due to a Bristol court appearance. The Kiwi-born all-rounder has been instructed to appear in court on the same day as his slated comeback Twenty20 match in Wellington on February 13. “In the circumstances, I have decided that it would not be right to join my teammates until after attending court on the 13th,” Stokes wrote on Twitter. - NZME
Pakistanis ‘reckless’ The Black Caps reckon Pakistan’s latest batting meltdown had hints of recklessness which they hope to exploit for the remainder of the T20 international series. Another series sweep appears on the cards after the beleaguered tourists capitulated for 105 in Wellington on Monday. Pace bowler Seth Rance says it was obvious their solution was to open the shoulders after being whitewashed 5-0 in the oneday series. However, the visitors didn’t pause for breath when it became obvious the bouncier conditions required circumspection. On a personal note, late-bloomer Rance hoped his 3-26 furthered the case for more opportunities.
■ CRICKET
Are New Zealand cricket fans fair-weather snobs? By andrew alderson Are local cricket fans fair-weather snobs, breaking eye contact to look over the shoulder of the New Zealand-Pakistan T20 duel to the Australian and English guests about to walk into the 2017-18 season party? The 8688-weak crowd at the series’ opening match at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium indicated that could be the case. New Zealand has secured a record 13-consecutive victories across all formats this summer, yet on the province’s anniversary holiday few turned out to watch.
New Zealand Cricket would make little profit from such an exercise. They could have made more if they had scheduled another match at the Basin Reserve, accepted a reduction in patrons (albeit packing out the ground) and benefited from a drop in the cost of venue hire. Logical excuses could justify the low turnout at what the stadium website lists as a 34,500-capacity arena (presumably minus a few for sightscreens). Horse racing’s Wellington Cup was held on Saturday, people could be away for the final throes
of the school holidays, and there might have been an over-saturation of games after earning an extra ODI courtesy of the ground debacle at Napier’s McLean Park. Limited overs fatigue might also have intervened. It’s day 42 of the 100-day test drought. The five-day cricketing landscape will remain parched from December 12 until March 22. That’s a century of days between the second West Indies test at Hamilton’s Seddon Park and the first England test – the country’s inaugural day-nighter – at Auckland’s Eden Park. The cricketing diet might be un-
balanced. Regardless, the hope is more people bother to attend the remainder of the New ZealandPakistan series which will be decided either at Eden Park tomorrow or Bay Oval on Sunday. It’s ironic if the margins of victory against the West Indies and Pakistan have generated apathy to a point where the focus turns to England and Australia’s arrival for a T20 tri-series starting Saturday week in Sydney. The four matches in New Zealand are on February 13, 16, 18 and 21 (the final). You would not need to look far into the annals to find fans who turned up and were relieved when
New Zealand teams simply competed – and lost – with dignity. Still, patrons only have so much disposable income and want maximum value. Judging by how England have continued their aggressive 50over approach to take a winning 3-0 lead over Australia, the fivematch ODI series here shapes as a cracker. Ticket sales already hint this is where fans are investing. Only then – and to a certain extent through the T20 tri-series with England and Australia – will we get a true gauge of New Zealand’s ability. - NZME

Top jumpers in the ring Five Mid Canterbury riders will be pressing their home advantage at a jumping and show hunter event at the Ashburton showgrounds this weekend. The Ashburton Area ESNZ Jumping and Show Hunter group is hosting the Grand Prix event on Saturday and Sunday, with 240 competitors and 330 horses travelling from as far as Invercargill and Wellington. Ashburton riders competing
include sisters Kimberley and Jaimee Bird, who will contest Saturday’s feature Young Riders Series. Missing from this event is another local, Luci Askin, who is representing the New Zealand Young Rider team at Gisborne. Among others heading to Ashburton for the weekend is New Zealand World Cup Final winner Rose Alfeld with a team of horses.
Contending the Horse Grand Prix class are Tegan Fitzsimon, Harry Feast, Steffi Whittaker, Katie Meredith (all from Canterbury) and Nicole White of Southland. Other Ashburton riders to watch for during the weekend include Bridget O’Sullivan, Candace Kingsbury and Harriet Stock. This is the last show prior to the NZ National Jumping and
Show Hunter Championships at McLeans Island in February and competitors will be looking for good performances prior to this event. Entries across the two days of competition were strong with three rings of jumping and a show hunter ring in action from 8.30am on both Saturday and Sunday. Entry to the grounds is free over the weekend.
■ RUGBY LEAGUE
Sims already eyeing up NRL finals By Laine CLark It might be only January but Brisbane prop Korbin Sims is already thinking about the NRL finals. Buoyed by a month of full contact training, Sims has his eyes firmly set on September action after recovering from a broken arm that had left his 2017 season in tatters. Despite some anxious moments at pre-season training, Sims has gained confidence wearing a right-arm guard and is keen to tick the box which injury had denied him in an impressive 2017 debut season for the Broncos – playing finals footy. After breaking his forearm a month out from last year’s playoffs, Sims cut a frustrated figure as Brisbane threatened to go all
the way before being knocked out in the preliminary final by eventual premiers Melbourne. There was more disappointment to come. Sims was picked for Fiji’s Rugby League World Cup squad but missed the Bati’s shock run to the semi-finals after medical staff discovered his arm had not recovered and he was released without playing a game. “The first thing was missing finals – that was a big thing in me coming to the Broncos,” said Sims, who was a late arrival last year from Newcastle. “I was a bit dirty at the timing of the injury but that’s football. “And then missing the World Cup was a massive confidence downer for me.” However, Sims is still confident
Korbin Sims of breaking his Broncos finals duck in 2018, despite their pack being decimated by the off-season departures of New Zealand skipper Adam Blair, Herman Ese’ese and Jai Arrow.
“There is a lot of hunger in this new group,” Sims said. “Wayne (Bennett) has really driven in the history of the club into this preseason and I really do think we have the crew (to play finals).” Sims hoped to be considered a pack leader after coming to terms with playing with an arm guard. “With the young group that is coming through, I can be a leader now that the experience of Blairy has left,” he said. “For me, it’s all about getting back into contact. “I have been back training for a while now and, the little collisions, I just have to be wary of. “It was pretty tough for the first few weeks back and I sat out a few sessions. (But) I played pretty much the whole year last season so I know what to expect.” - AAP

■ VINCENT
Racing future in serious doubt By Michael Guerin The career of one of New Zealand’s most exciting horses hangs in the balance after his season has ended disastrously. Auckland Trotting Cup winner Vincent is unlikely to race again for at least a year after a hole was found in his suspensory on Monday. A devastated trainer Mark Purdon revealed the problem yesterday after Vincent was found to have swelling in a leg last Friday which forced him out of Saturday night’s Ballarat Cup. As the swelling went down over the weekend Purdon and training partner Natalie Rasmussen hoped for the best and that they would still be able to target the Chariots Of Fire and Miracle Mile in Sydney next month. Those hopes were destroyed by
M2
a veterinary examination including a scan of the injury. “He has a hole in his suspensory and he definitely won’t race again this season,” said Purdon. “The vet has recommended nine months complete rest before we can even look at racing him again. So things are very much up in the air for him because suspensory injuries are not great. “It is very, very disappointing because we all know how good he was and how good he could be. We put him in the same class as Lazarus.” “So we will follow the vet’s advise and hope he comes back.” Vincent has won 16 of his 19 starts and was the second favourite to Lazarus for the Miracle Mile after his comprehensive laststart win in the Auckland Cup at what was only his second open class start.
Mark Purdon Suspensory injuries are never good in horses but even more tricky in a horse of Vincent’s impressive physique, who will need plenty of work to get race fit as he gets older, especially being a stallion. If he can’t make it back he
should, however, have a commercial start to his stallion career as he has been absolute top class on the track in both New Zealand and Australia. Being by Art Major he can be crossed with the huge number of daughters of Bettors Delight around Australasia, which won’t be an option for Lazarus when the champ is retired to stud. While Purdon’s voice was dripping in disappointment yesterdat, the news with the champ is better, with Lazarus now expected to make the $500,000 Hunter Cup on Saturday week. “I have been thrilled with how he has improved and unless something else goes wrong he will be in the Hunter Cup,” said Purdon. “I don’t think it should be too much of a problem heading forward.” - HRNZ
Another Aussie jockey Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard are to add further Australian flavour to their Matamata stable. Jake Bayliss is currently enjoying a successful riding stint with them and now another Victorian-based jockey in apprentice Jordan Grob, 22, is to join the operation. “He’ll be here by the end of the month,” Gerard said. “He can ride light (52kg) and he’ll gain more confidence here. He’s a good young rider.” - NZME
Sharrock speaks out A leading central districts trainer has added his voice to growing concern at the state of New Zealand racing. Taranaki’s Allan Sharrock spoke out after another abandonment, the Woodville Cup meeting. “I’m livid – trying to run race meetings on unirrigated tracks with rain forecast is a joke. We need four super tracks in the country and then trainers make the decision whether to go to the designated areas to train. Without pain, we won’t get change.” - NZME

In brief Mertens stuns Svitolina Unseeded Belgian Elise Mertens has upset world No.4 and Australian Open pre-title favourite Elina Svitolina to make her first grand slam semi-final. The 22-year-old Hobart champion held her nerve against Svitolina, who was also unbeaten this year, to stun the Ukrainian 6-4 6-0. Playing her first Open, Mertens will take on Danish second seed Caroline Wozniacki or Spanish veteran Carla Suarez Navarro in tomorrow’s semi-finals. - AAP
History on her side It’s too early to judge if this year will match her stunning feats of 2016 but Angelique Kerber feels she’s on the right track. Kerber continues her pursuit of a second Australian Open title with a quarter-final match-up against big-hitting Madison Keys today. In seven meetings Kerber has only lost once to the world No.20, that coming on grass back in 2014. Kerber is looking to wind back the clock to 2016 when she won grand slam titles at Melbourne Park and the US Open, made the Wimbledon final and also wrested the No.1 ranking from Serena Williams. - AAP
Outsiders clash on court South Korea’s Chung Hyeon makes a backhand return to Serbia’s Novak Djokovic during their fourth round match at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne on Monday night. PHOTO AP
■ TENNIS
Injured Djokovic bows out A wounded Novak Djokovic is set to undergo further scans on his injured elbow after losing in straight sets to South Korea’s Hyeon Chung in the fourth round of the Australian Open. The six-time champion took a medical timeout after the first set and was in obvious discomfort as Chung stormed to a 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 7-6 (7-3) victory on Rod Laver Arena.
Coming off a six-month layoff, the longest of his career, Djokovic’s health had been questioned throughout the tournament and his troublesome right elbow appeared far from healed. Speaking after the match, the Serb admitted he was unsure whether he would need more time away from the game. “I really don’t know,” Djokovic said. “I have to reassess eve-
rything with my team, medical team, coaches and everybody. Scan it, see what the situation is like.” The 30-year-old was philosophical about his latest setback. “It’s frustrating, of course, when you have that much time and you don’t heal properly,” he said. “But it is what it is. I’m just trying my best obviously because I love this sport.”
Daily Events
Djokovic wasn’t helped by the fact that he was playing a young man determined to emulate his own exhausting style of play. The 21-year-old Chung, bore an uncanny resemblance to his childhood idol with his speed, athleticism and freakish retrieval skills. “He definitely has the game to be a top-10 player, without a doubt,” Djokovic said. - AAP
Hyeon Chung began playing tennis aged six after his doctor recommended that looking at the green-coloured ball would help his eyesight. Tennessee-born Tennys Sandgren? Well, he never stood a chance with a name like that. He was always going to take up the sport. But few people, if anyone, gave Chung and Sandgren a chance of meeting in the Australian Open quarter-finals. That’s exactly what the two outsiders will do today, though, after cutting a swathe through the Open draw. - AAP
Venus knocked out Kiwi Michael Venus has been dumped from the Australian Open mixed doubles second round alongside Taiwanese partner Chan Hao-ching. Venus and Chan were thrashed 6-2, 6-1 by Brazilian Marcelo Demoliner and Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in just 45 minutes. - AAP

TODAY’S GOALS: Good – 8 Excellent – 12 Amazing – 14
ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You have more power than you are exercising, but you wisely weigh the consequences of each action. True influence isn’t about what you can get people to do; it’s about what you can inspire them to want to do. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The absence of a person can be a presence – a presence so strong it dominates the room, the hour, the talk and the feeling of the day. This is how humans can transcend laws of space and time. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll be the one with the cool news soon. Today you’ll get a chance to practice reacting to the cool news of others. You’re modelling the reaction you’d like to get when it’s your turn to be the messenger. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Setting yourself up for success will be a matter of casting the right people in the right roles of your life. You need someone to impress, someone to learn from and someone to cheer you on. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll talk on a number of broad topics and make people laugh, too. But your secret to relating to people is not in expressing yourself exceptionally well; rather, it is in observing exceptionally well. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): If it’s true external circumstances somehow exist to balance and harmonise what’s going on inside you, you should be able to change your interior world through a rearrangement of your environment. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): It is your desire to be a delight to others. You won’t have to do too much to achieve this effect – maybe slightly more than your usual self-care and making an effort to put yourself in their presence. That’s it! SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): “How my achievements mock me!” said a character in a Shakespeare play. It’s also the sentiment of everyone who’s ever done something remarkable and been daunted by the prospect of repeating it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Because you know yourself well, you will see the world with greater accuracy. You can take your strengths and failings out of the equation and try for an unbiased view, to what extent that is possible. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Plant your affection and something will grow. Maybe it won’t be what you expected. Every location is different, and some ground is more fertile than other ground. But something will come of it. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): To think deeply into shallow things is the tendency shared by poets and storytellers, mystics, inventors, designers and pied pipers of all sorts. Some frivolous wastes of time really are just that. Be discerning. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You can’t learn what you already know. This is why you might have to kick around beliefs and stories inside your head to see how sound they are. Believing in untrue things can prevent future learning.

Sport Big game in Fiji The Highlanders will take on the Chiefs in a New Zealand Super Rugby derby in June in Fiji. Led by new coach Aaron Mauger, the Dunedinbased side have agreed to stage a home game in Suva on June 30 against the Colin Cooper-coached Chiefs – who played the Crusaders in Fiji in 2016 and 2017. Club chief Roger Clark says it is a sound sporting decision. “We are aware of the large following Super Rugby enjoys in Fiji and we’re happy to have the chance to showcase our style of game in the islands,” Clark said.

Whips are cracking as they head for home New Zealand’s leading driver, Blair Orange, turns for home and lets Stunin Love loose at the top of the Ashburton Racecourse straight at yesterday’s Chertsey Trotting Club trials. Orange and the Paul Court-trained pacer were eventually run down by the Ricky May-driven Bardot (left) who managed to reel the leader in at the end of a slick five-horse trial. Fast times were the order of the day yesterday, but no one caught the eye more than the Greg and Nina Hope-trained two-year-old filly, Kendra who paced 1:55.6 in her eight-horse trial to win impressively with May in the sulky. Locally-trained pacer Gotta Future was another to register a strong win for Wendy Stevenson, while the talented Mighty Santana looked on song for John Hay in the last heat of the day – registering some slick sectionals on his way to victory.
Joshua rattled, says Parker Joseph Parker claims he is winning the war of words with Anthony Joshua saying the Brit is rattled. And Parker has continued his camp’s attack on Joshua, claiming he could “crush” Joshua’s confidence in their unification fight by standing up to his best punches. Joshua, the man most rate as the world’s top heavyweight, will be a heavy favourite to win in Cardiff on April 1. WBO heavyweight champion Parker has given another tick to his controversial manager David Higgins, who he says has unsettled Joshua. Higgins’ attacks on Joshua’s credentials led to a bizarre response from the WBA and IBF belt holder who has declared it would need “more than a human” to beat him. “I don’t know how to take that,” Aucklander Parker told Sky Sports. “I might have to be Superman or
Batman or something. I don’t know? “Have to be more than human? “I don’t know what more you can be? “He was rattled with what David was saying. “For him to defend himself, shows that he didn’t like what was coming his way. I don’t think he really takes criticism that well.” Parker wants to take Joshua’s best shots with a grin. “If he hits me in the chin and doesn’t hurt me then obviously I’ll smile and try my best to hit him back,” he said. “I think some fighters when they throw a punch and throw everything they have and it doesn’t affect the other person, it might crush them a bit. “In boxing, some fighters have good chins. “You just have to be persistent and continue following the plan and trying to catch them nicely, and obviously hope to be knocking him out.”- NZME

King ousted by David Eight-time squash world champion Nicol David has eliminated New Zealand’s Joelle King from Tournament of Champions in New York. Malaysian sixth seed David saw off ninth-seeded King in a fierce 53-minute tussle, winning 11-9 2-11 11-7 11-9. King squandered leads in the first and fourth sets, ensuring she wouldn’t repeat her first-ever win over David at last year’s China Open.
Swansea stuns Liverpool
Joseph Parker will have to be ‘more than a human’.
A week after inflicting Manchester City’s first loss in the English Premier League, Liverpool lost at last-place Swansea 1-0 yesterday and ended their 18-match unbeaten run in all competitions. Alfie Mawson’s 40thminute strike secured one of the most surprising results of the season on a night Liverpool’s usually lethal attack toiled at Liberty Stadium. It was a far cry from Liverpool’s devastating display in their 4-3 win over runaway leaders City eight days earlier.
