Restricted fire season

Mid Canterbury officially moved into a restricted fire season last night and the onus is now on those thinking of lighting a fire outdoors to ensure they get the right permit before doing so. The Ashburton District, which forms part of the Mid and South Canterbury region for Fire Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) was elevated to a restricted fire season

as of last night and deputy principal rural fire officer Don Geddes is urging people to make use of the website, www.checkitsalright. nz to become aware of their responsibilities before lighting any form of outside fire. “It’s a one-stop shop,” he said. “All people need to do is enter their address and the fuel type they will be burning and it will tell

you if that is okay, or if you need a permit, it will take you to where you need to go,” he said. Shifting into restricted fire season was something that had been thought long and hard about and was only something that was ever done if absolutely required and that moment is now – but Geddes wanted to stress that while a restricted fire season limits what

We do the little things that make a difference

can be undertaken, it wasn’t a complete fire ban. “We do need to clarify that this is not a fire ban, just a fire restriction and because the element of risk is a bit higher we need an added element of control,” he said. “If there was to be a fire ban it would stop any fires being lit at all and that’s because the risk would

just be too great.” With hot and dry temperatures ahead in the forecast and February shaping up to be a good weather month, the risk would likely grow in the coming weeks. The remainder of the Canterbury region has been in a restricted fire season since the middle of December and will later this week move to a total fire ban.

Long line of history in mystery rock By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

There might be thousands and thousands of rocks that make up the Rakaia riverbed, but one caught a fisherman’s eye which turns out to have interesting origins. The fisherman, who asked not be named, was fishing at the Rakaia River when he noticed the rock, which he decided to take home due to its fascinating colours and shape. GNS Science sedimentologist and principal scientist Greg Browne said it is always difficult to tell exactly what a rock is from a photograph, but said it looks like some form of concretion. A concretion forms within sedimentary rocks like limestone or sandstone and typically zones where mineral-rich fluids have concentrated, and over time those fluids harden into a circular-shaped nodule or concretion. “Typically the fluids concerned are rich in carbonate minerals and these can take various forms including calcium carbonate (calcite concretions), magnesium carbonate (dolomite concretions), iron carbonate (siderite concretions), barium carbonate (barite concretions) or manganese carbonate concretions,” he said. “These minerals can all be present to varying proportions in a given concretion. They take on

logically, as can been seen in the moraines around Lake Coleridge or in the Rakaia Gorge. “The rock is very heavy which would also support the idea of a concretion. Some of these miner-

als like magnesium, manganese, iron and barium are very dense and hence result in a heavy rock,” he said. “Such rocks are also very hard.” Brown says these rocks, al-

Grieving father presents petition to improve Summit Road By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

A grieving father’s determination that no-one else should be killed in a car crash on Summit Road was centre-stage at the Christchurch City Council yesterday. Jason Alexander of Ashburton presented a petition calling on authorities to improve the safety of the Christchurch road. Supported by Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown and friend Bec Sandys, Alexander said he had

CONTACT US 03 308 6733 Countdown Complex, East St, Ashburton

been overwhelmed with the support for the petition, with more than 6000 signatures. “I’m not doing this as a grieving father, I don’t hate the road because of the accidents,” Alexander told Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel and councillors. “I’m doing this because unfortunately our younger generation are using this road as a place to burn rubber so to speak, at the top of the hill, and then race back down to the bottom, with undoubtedly bald tyres.”

Summit Road had always been a dangerous road and the older generation had a responsibility to put measures in place to ensure it was safe, he said. “How can we as a community stand by and wait for this to happen again, how can we live with ourselves knowing we could have done something to prevent loss of life?” Alexander’s daughters, 17-year old Tayla and 15-year-old Sunmara, were rear-seat passengers in a vehicle which crashed off the

road on November 27. Tayla was thrown from the car and killed on impact, while Sunmara passed away in hospital 16 days later after being trapped in the car and suffering burns to 80 per cent of her body. Alexander said it was time to revisit attempts to make Summit Road safer. He referred to submissions in 2015 to restrict access to parts, and said a lowered speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour introduced earlier this year had not been enforced, judging from

burnout tracks and skid marks. Dalziel extended the council’s sympathies and said members understood why a father must do everything he could to make sure other parents did not go through such an experience. She acknowledged issues raised by the petition, of not only the safety of the road, but also driver education. She said the council would do all that it could to help, and the petition was referred to the Urban Development and Transport Committee.

For Alison it’s all about the print By Heather Mackenzie

photographers@theguardian.co.nz

Alison Lewis has been volunteering at The Plains Museum for over a year now and she loves it. Lewis has always had a passion for books, so it seemed a natural progression for her to follow that passion in to looking after the printing machines, typewriters and typesetting tools at the museum. She said the role requires her to be part cleaner, part detective and part tour guide. “There is not a lot of information around about these old machines and how to use them.” Lewis said she finds what she can about them on the internet. “But a lot of it I have to work out for myself.” “Like all machines of this age, they all have their own quirks. So what it says to do in the operating manual may not be exactly how they were operated in the past.” Ideally Lewis would like to get at least one of the printers back in working order. “I would love it if we could print our own posters and certificates here.” Also prompting her to get a printer going is her understanding of what people want to see in a museum. “People and especially children, like to see how things work.” She said some children are really interested when they come in and others

not so much. However once they find out they can have a go on the manual typewriter their interest soon sparks up and they are soon merrily asking their parents or grandparents questions. Many of the younger generation have never seen a typewriter before and have to have it explained what it is and how it works. “It’s funny to think that something so familiar to us such as the typewriter has now totally gone.” When visitors come in and have a look around quite often one of the machines will spark a childhood memory. “I hear lots of visitors say things like ‘Dad used to work in a print works and I remember going with him to work and playing with the paper’.” From time to time a knowlegeable visitor will pop in for a look and end up helping Lewis with something. “One guy came and helped me get the paper guillotine working, it wasn’t cutting quite right, but he was a big help all the same.” Lewis is well aware all her plans for the little print house will take time to come to fruition, but she’s in no rush. “I’m happy pottering about in here, figuring out how things work or what they’re for, learning as I go. I’m in it for the long haul,” she said. Lewis is always on the lookout for people who know about the printers or have worked with them. If you can help, call in to the Plains Museum and ask for Alison.

The Opportunities Party seeks a Rangitata candidate By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

The Opportunities Party (TOP) is on the lookout for a candidate to stand in the Rangitata electorate for this year’s General Election. The former Gareth Morgan-led party is aiming to get into Parliament for the first time, and hopes a Rangitata candidate can help it do just that. The party was formed in 2016 and won 2.4 per cent of the party vote at the last election in 2017. New leader Geoff Simmons said party polling showing eight per cent of people wanted to vote TOP, but many didn’t as they were scared the party wouldn’t reach

five per cent and their vote would be wasted. “It’s all about giving people the confidence we will get into Parliament,” Simmons said. One of the strategies to do this would be not only getting as many party votes as possible, but also focusing on winning a seat in one or two electorates nationwide. He had yet to investigate whether or not this would be possible in Canterbury region electorates, but said there were some areas nationwide where parties had in the past chosen to run a secondary campaign in order to help prospective partners into government.

“Those conversations are still very much open as well,” he said. Simmons said when he last spoke to former Rangitata TOP candidate Olly Wilson of Timaru he was very busy, and he was not expecting him to stand again. Wilson confirmed to the Guardian he was not planning on restanding. Simmons said he was on the lookout for a new candidate, and that would be someone with standing in the community and an understanding and affinity with TOP policies. “It’s about fairness and wanting to do what works, not left, not right, just what works,” Simmons said.

Among TOP’s priorities was sorting out fresh water issues. “And stopping exporting the good stuff we have to China and improving the quality of the rest,” he said with regard to water resources. Another priority was affordable housing. “The housing crisis is nationwide now, and we have seen that neither of the big parties is prepared to do what it takes to fix it,” Simmons said. TOP was planning on releasing its first tranche of candidates next month, and yesterday announced its first confirmed candidate, Jessica Hammond, who would stand

in Ohariu. For the last election, Wilson was ranked number five on the TOP list, and ended up being the third highest polling candidate in Rangitata, behind frontrunner Andrew Falloon of National and Jo Luxton of Labour, who together gained more than 30,000 votes. Wilson received 1585 votes, followed by Mojo Mathers of the Greens, who received 1307 votes, and Tom Corbett of ACT, who received 237. TOP received 686 party votes in the electorate, polling the fourth highest in this area, behind NZ First and the Greens, but beating ACT, which received the least.

In brief Flatmates lose case Two Auckland flatmates have failed to convince Work and Income they are not lovers and have been ordered to pay more than $150,000 in compensation. Karel Modderman had and Shirley Eyre had their pension and welfare entitlements cut after a Ministry of Social Development investigation last year. MSD concluded after the extensive investigation that they were in a relationship, rather than just flatmates, and had been wrongfully claiming the more generous single person’s pension and benefit. They plan to appeal the decisions to the next stage, a Social Security Appeal Authority. - NZME

■■CANNABIS REFERENDUM

Emotive, divisive question By Heather Mackenzie

photographers@theguardian.co.nz

The answer to the cannabis referendum question will remain a mystery until after Election 2020, however what isn’t a mystery is how emotive and divisive the legalising recreational cannabis question is proving to be. The draft bill, as put forward by Minister of Justice Andrew Little states that the purpose of the Act is to regulate and control the cultivation, manufacture, use and sale of cannabis in New Zealand, with the intent of reducing harm from cannabis use to individuals, families, whanau and communities. The core elements of the proposed scheme breakdown as follows; a minimum purchase and use age of 20, will be confined to private homes and licensed premises, conditions will be set for personal growing and sharing, public health messaging is a must, the whole supply chain from commercial growers to sellers will all have to be licensed and restrictions on marketing and advertising will be put in place. The weighty sixty-four page draft consultation document on

the Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill is available for the public to view on www.referendum.govt.nz and covers the act in fine detail. “The draft bill is now publicly available, and is subject to ongoing discussion by the cross-party working group,” Little said. “I expect there will be changes made to the draft bill following these discussions and I am working towards a final draft bill in late March or early April. “The result of the referendum will be binding on the parties presently in government. “Those parties have said they will abide by the outcome of the referendum. If National forms a government, they will not be obliged to abide by the referendum result.” Rangitata MP, Andrew Falloon said he was disappointed at the decided upon purchasing age. “As with any referendum it’s up to individuals how they vote, but my intention is to vote no,” he said. “I’m disappointed the Government have gone with a purchase age of 20 when it’s widely accepted that brain development con-

tinues to occur until the age of 25.” Falloon also has concerns around the mental health aspects of legalising a drug that has the potential to cause mental health issues. “It’s similarly accepted that marijuana use disrupts brain development and increases the risk of schizophrenia and depression. “Given the very clear mental wellbeing issues we already face in New Zealand, particularly in smaller communities like ours, the very last thing the Government should be doing is more easily enabling young people to increase their risk of mental illness,” he said. Falloon is aware there is a strong difference between medical cannabis and recreational use. “I support medicinal cannabis and the prescribing of it by doctors where they believe it will be of benefit to a person with an illness or condition.” Also of concern for the National MP is the issues around drug driving on our roads. As per AA statistics in 2018 ninety-five people were killed on

our roads in preventable crashes where drugs were involved. Falloon is frustrated that New Zealand is behind countries like the UK, Australia and Canada who have had roadside oral drug testing for some time. He said with the referendum looming several of his National Party colleagues have for two years now, been proposing the same overseas drug testing framework be applied in New Zealand. “But each time it’s been voted down by the Government or they’ve refused to let it be debated.” In December last year the government announced that police will be given roadside saliva drug testing devices. The plan is these devices will be introduced in 2021. “The Government have finally indicated they’ll look to bring in a roadside drug test next year, but not until after the referendum; it’s putting the cart before the horse.” If the referendum returns a Yes vote, the precise time recreational cannabis will become legal in New Zealand is unclear.

The two missing, presumed killed by Whakaare/White Island’s devastating eruption have now been confirmed as deceased by the Chief Coroner. Whakatane local and White Island tour guide Hayden Marshall-Inman and Australian tourist Winona Langford were yesterday confirmed to have been killed by the devastating eruption. “The Chief Coroner has ruled that both Winona and Hayden died on Whakaari/White Island,” Deputy Commissioner John Tims, National Operations Commander said. Their bodies have not been recovered from the active volcano. Tims’ announcement brings the official death toll of the disaster to 20 people. - NZME

Pandemic response

Dry spell has Mid Canterbury in its grip

The Minister of Health has pushed back against claims health authorities are not properly preparing for a potential arrival of the deadly coronavirus and says the Government is “alert but not alarmed”. There have been 17 deaths and more than 540 confirmed case of the flu-like virus in China, with the city of Wuhan, the centre of the outbreak, shutting down public transport and advising people not to leave the area. While there have been no confirmed cases in New Zealand, Health Minister David Clark says New Zealand health officials have been monitoring the spread of the virus since January 6 and the Ministry of Health had sent out two notifications since. “It’s fair to characterise our response at this time as alert but not alarmed,” Clark told reporters. The World Health Organisation has met to discuss the global risk posed by the virus, but delayed a decision about whether the declare an international emergency until today. - NZME

Climbing temperatures in Ashburton this weekend are accompanied by no rain in the forecast, at least until later next week. January has been marked by warm temperatures and very little rain for the town, only 5.2 millimetres, compared to the longterm average for the month of 41 millimetres. MetService meteorologist Tahlia Crabtree said a ridge of high pressure leading to fine and settled weather was to ease at the end of next week, with conditions moving to a south-west flow. This

could bring some showers. “But it’s quite far away to know what precipitation that might bring, especially to the east coast of the South Island,” she said. Eastern regions are forecast to remain mostly fine this weekend, with temperatures expected to climb into the 30s. Ashburton is set to hit 30 degrees today, and 31 tomorrow, 25 on Sunday and 28 on Monday. A southerly change on Saturday evening will see temperatures temporarily drop, with the minimum forecast being 12 degrees. “If it does get up to that 30, I would say it (lowering tempera-

ture) would be quite noticeable,” Crabtree said. Despite the dryness, summer has not been too hot, and if predicted highs are reached today and tomorrow, it will only be the third and fourth times in the season that the mercury has hit 30 degrees. Ashburton had a high of 31 degrees on January 12, following a high of 34 degrees on December 6. The weather has been perfect for arable farmers, who have had a clear run for harvesting. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury provincial president Da-

vid Clark said the conditions had proved to be “a bit of a dry finish to the maturity of crops”. “But the capacity of irrigation systems have allowed grain and seed and vegetable seed crops to grow in this district and be watered through to maturity,” Clark said. If it turned into a prolonged spell of dryness, livestock farmers could be a bit tight for feed, but there was a lot of surplus feed in Mid Canterbury. There was nothing unusual about the dry spell. “This is what Canterbury does,” he said.

A woman who left her rental home with holes around the house, windows smashed and a pantry door ripped off has been ordered to pay up. Francisca Joan Kaweka-Webster was the tenant who lived at a property on Avenue Road, in Foxton, in the Manawatu-Whanganui region. A Tenancy Tribunal was told that last September, when her tenancy ended, the landlord arrived to find the house and garage badly damaged. Up to 25 holes were identified around the house – some of them so big that they went through to the next room. - NZME

NZME The Government is defending its record on benefits amid the release of new figures which show the number of people receiving them is still soaring. The Ministry of Social Development figures show 15,000 more people were on a benefit by the end of the December 2019 quarter compared with the same time the previous year. The number of people on Jobseeker Support has increased by 10 per cent over the same period to a total of 147,464. Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni has put the increase down to a softening in some sectors, like manufacturing, and low unemployment which made for a tight labour market. But she said she was “heartened” by numbers that also

Judge Russell Collins discharged the jury on the counts they could not reach verdict on. He thanked them and discharged them. The man may seek a discharge without conviction. If so he must file an application in early March. At about 11.30am the jury were given a majority direction. They had indicated to Judge Collins that they were struggling to reach unanimity on all charges. Judge Collins enabled them to proceed to give a verdict with a majority.

National has slammed the rising figures with leader Simon Bridges saying benefit numbers were now back to levels last seen during the Global Financial Crisis. “Thousands of vulnerable Kiwis are now also struggling to find jobs with the economy showing sluggish growth and no plan from the Government to deliver the growth New Zealand needs.”

NECK PAIN?

Then try a Teeter WHY INVERSION?

Inversion helps to:

Because in most cases it works! Inversion Therapy is the oldest recorded medical cure for back issues, first recorded by Hippocrates in 400 BC, otherwise known as spinal traction. Traction was used by modern hospitals for many years however because it is a slow process and ties up hospital beds for many weeks, they recently stopped using the treatment.

• Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

Inversion Therapy is gentle and relaxing if done properly and has many other benefits apart from relieving back pain, it helps realign the spine and pelvic area, loosens up tight muscles, increases oxygen to the brain, stimulates circulation and the lymphatic system and has many other benefits. Inversion NZ have been teaching people how to use this treatment for over twelve years, it is an amazing process with most people getting off the Teeter pain free for the first time in years or with their pain substantially reduced. The relief usually lasts around 30 minutes to three hours and as the pain returns you use the machine again, after using this method of treatment, in a few weeks the relief increases, which is the discs starting to retain more fluid, muscles starting to loosen up and the body coming back into alignment. In our experience most people are pain free in around three months, then the Teeter is used daily to maintain the health of the body.

WHY TEETER?

Frank Harwood (84 at time of picture) using his Teeter, Frank’s been Inverting for over eleven years and has found it keeps him young

The biggest issue with inversion tables is there is no safety standards that need to be met. Because of this, other brands use mild steel for 100% of the metal involved. Mild steel is great for static loads, in other words things that don’t move such as chairs, tables etc, however with Inversion Therapy there is considerable movement and this movement causes mild steel to flex. Because it always flexes in the same place it eventually causes metal fatigue and can result in failure. All Teeters are manufactured for extreme safety. Heat treated high tensile steel has been used in all areas subjected to stress. High tensile steel is far stronger and most importantly does not flex. This means Teeters are the strongest and safest tables on the market today.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

OUR VIEW

Jason Alexander, a true legend E

ven from darkness there must eventually be, at some point, light. Unless you’ve been through the pain of losing a child, it’s only possible to imagine just how truly heart-breaking of an experience it must be. It could be easy to fall into despair, give up on the world and crawl deeper into the darkness. And it must be even worse if you’ve lost two. Yet despite having that incredibly horrible, and horrific situation thown at him late last year, Ashburton father Jason Alexander has chosen a different path – one which could go a long way to ensure that other parents don’t have to go through the pain and torment he’s faced over the

past couple of months. Alexander’s daughter, Tayla and Sunmara both died as a result of a car accident on Christchurch’s Port Hills last year. The two Ashburton teenagers were back-seat passenger in a vehicle which crashed down a bank and caught fire. Tayla passed away at the scene while Sunmara died a few weeks later in hospital with her father at her

bedside. Alexander, from the outset of this tragic situation, has been quite simply remarkable. Despite his own battles and being at the bedside and watching his youngest daughter’s battle without being able to help, he kept a community of family and friends informed, commentated every step forward, and sadly, every step backwards showing true humility and understanding of people’s need to know the latest news. From the outset he spoke to so many parents of young children whose lives have been taken in accidents. He spoke of forgiveness and not wanting to apportion blame on the shoulders of anyone in particular and most importantly, he spoke of his two

daughters. Yesterday, he took things a step further when he presented a petition to the Christchurch City Council urging them to make Summit Road, where the accident occurred, safer and to enforce new rules around when the road can be accessed in order to ensure no other parent has to go through the nightmare he has. And that wouldn’t have been easy. No-one would have blamed him for walking away from it all and everyone would have understood if it was simply too much for him to deal with given the circumstances. Yet here’s a father, just your normal everyday citizen, stand-

ing up in front of the decision makers and asking them for better in an effort to reduce the chance of more harm coming to other families from that same stretch of road. And that, is truly admirable and can’t help but induce some form of emotion. The world needs more people like Jason Alexander. Our community needs more people like him. They say it’s only in the face of true adversity do we really show our true selves. And in this instance, the true self of someone – Jason – is someone who we, as a part of the community where he, and his precious girls come from, should be incredibly proud of.

One year ago: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called home all Venezuelan diplomats from the United States and closed its embassy, a day after ordering all US diplomats out of the country; the Trump administration had said the order wasn’t legal because the US now recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido, and not Maduro, as

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Friday, January 24, the 24th day of 2020. There are 342 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On January 24, 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill concluded a wartime conference in Casablanca, Morocco. On this date: In 1848, James W. Marshall discovered a gold nugget at Sutter’s Mill in northern California, a discovery that led to the gold rush of ’49. in 1865, over a thousand troops commanded by Duncan Cameron set out on what was to be the general’s final campaign in New Zealand, by invading Taranaki. In 1935, beer was first sold in cans in Richmond, Virginia, by the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Co. In 1939, at least 28,000 people were killed by an earthquake that devastated the city of Chillan in Chile. In 1945, Associated Press war correspondent Joseph Morton was among a group of captives executed by the Germans at the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp in Austria. In 1965, British statesman Winston Churchill died in London at age 90. In 1980, the New Zealand government ordered the Soviet Union‘s ambassador, Vsevolod Sofinsky, to leave the country within 72 hours after he allegedly delivered money to the proSoviet Socialist Unity Party. In 1984, Apple Computer began selling its first Macintosh model, which boasted a built-in 9-inch monochrome display, a clock rate of 8 megahertz and 128k of RAM. In 1985, the space shuttle Discovery was launched from Cape Canaveral on the first secret, allmilitary shuttle mission. In 1987, gunmen in Lebanon kidnapped educators Alann Steen, Jesse Turner, Robert Polhill and Mitheleshwar Singh. (All were eventually released.)

Sunscreen wise

D

isturbing news this week for those people like me who love getting outside and enjoy the sun on your back. Sunscreen bearing the name of Surf Life Saving New Zealand has had to be re-labelled because it wasn’t as good as it claimed to be. A Consumer NZ test in November found nine out of 20 sunscreens failed to provide the protection claimed on the bottle. Surf Life Saving’s cream was one of them. I know my darling wife has issues with Banana Boat sunscreen and won’t use the product again as she has been burnt after using the product as directed on the bottle. The stuff we use currently resembles a very, very thick white paint. It is obviously 90 per cent zinc and costs the best part of an arm and both legs. It certainly does the job though even if it does leave you looking rather ghostly. My how things have changed. I remember mother applying baby oil to us boys before we went out to play. Baby oil!! What protection did that offer? NONE! It did make us go nice and brown though. I still have my doubts whether she actually liked us all that much, what with the tap dancing thing and now this. And didn’t they used to leave babies out in the sun to sleep? I know people will say the sun wasn’t as harsh back then but I can remember my nose and cheeks peeling because of sunburn most summers. Or did it only actually happen a couple of times and I’m just being a drama queen? No, I’m sure I can remember heaps of other kids at school with the same look under their towel hat. Imagine if you turned up

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR

to school like that today. The shock and horror on people’s faces. The looks down the nose from other parents while secretly thinking to themselves, thank God that hasn’t happened to my kid yet. After our latest trip out to stay in Nigel (our caravan) Manda was worried that Maddison had got a bit burnt as she was a little red faced when we got home. Turns out she had been running round after the dog and returned to a normal colour when some clothing was removed. There was no chance of her getting sunburnt as several coats of the afore-mentioned white paint had been applied during the day. At this rate, sunscreen will need to feature the next time we sit down and go through my joke sheet (pay slip) and work out our budget. Power, phone, internet, insurance, groceries, petrol and sunblock. Here’s the official word from Consumer NZ Nine of 20 sunscreens we tested didn’t meet the SPF claimed on the label. Three products also failed to meet requirements for broad-spectrum protection. Just eight sunscreens met their label claims. It’s time the government made the sunscreen standard mandatory. In a country with one of the highest rates of skin cancer in

the world, a voluntary standard isn’t good enough. The nine products that didn’t meet the SPF claimed on the label: ❁❁ Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+ A Touch of Mango and Papaya ❁❁ Invisible Zinc Face + Body Mineral Sunscreen SPF50 ❁❁ Natio Suncare Moisturising Sun Lotion SPF50+ ❁❁ Frankie Apothecary Natural Sunscreen + Kawakawa and Antioxidant SPF50 ❁❁ MooGoo Natural Sunscreen SPF40 ❁❁ Cancer Society Everyday Sun Lotion SPF50+ ❁❁ Marine Blue Australia Dry Touch Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+ ❁❁ Sunsense Ultra SPF50+ ❁❁ Banana Boat Dry Balance Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+ ❁❁ Cancer Society Everyday Sun Lotion SPF50+ bottle.

Up to standard Just eight of the 20 sunscreens we tested met their SPF label claim and the requirements for broad-spectrum protection. Prices ranged from $7.20 per 100ml (Smart365 Sun Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+ from The Warehouse) to $64 per 100ml (La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra-Light Fluid 50+). These sunscreens met their SPF label claim and passed the broad spectrum test: ❁❁ La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra-Light Fluid SPF50+ ❁❁ Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+ ❁❁ Nivea Sun Protect & Moisture Moisturising Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+ ❁❁ Smart365 Sun Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+ ❁❁ Oasis Sun Sport PA++++ SPF40 ❁❁ Badger Sport Unscented Natural Mineral Sunscreen Cream SPF35 ❁❁ My Sunshine Natural Sunscreen + Antioxidants SPF30 ❁❁ Solzinc Natural Sun Protection 30+ The full report is free, thanks to the Ministry of Health, and you can look it up at https://www. consumer.org.nz/articles/ sunscreens/know-theissue Till next week, Hoo Roo Phill Hooper Sunsmart Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. ■■STATISTICS NZ

Population growth has slowed By Hamish Rutherford NZME

New Zealand’s population growth over the past year will be slower than previously thought, with Statistics New Zealand slashing its estimates for gains from migration. Since New Zealand abolished departure cards at border security in late 2018, Statistics NZ has been using a new method to calculate whether people are short-term visitors or migrants. This has seen the estimated annual gain from net migration sit above 50,000 throughout 2019, and at an estimated 55,000 for the 12 months to October 31. Yesterday Statistics NZ acknowledged that in the early months of its new calculations it was missing the link between arrivals and departures for around 1 in every 1000 border crossings, or around 15,000 out of around 15 million border crossings. As a result Statistics New Zealand now estimated the net gain from migration in the year to May 2019 was 46,100, around 9400 be-

low what it previously estimated. Since then migration has continued to ease, with the current estimate that in the year to November 30 the net annual gain from

timately been revised downwards was larger than expected. “While we had expected some downside in net migration, today’s result was even softer than we factored in,” Westpac senior economist Satish Ranchhod said. The bank expected net migration to continue to fall throughout 2020, which could have an impact on the economy, with building activity ramping up at a time when population growth has been cooling. “While a large number of houses will still be needed to address earlier underbuilding, we think a peak in home building is approaching,” Ranchhod said. “The chances of overbuilding and a classic boom-bust cycle have increased, especially in Auckland.” Migration peaked in mid-2016 at around 64,000, largely due to a turnaround in migration patterns from Australia. Arrivals from across the Tasman briefly exceeded departures to Australia on an annual basis for the first time since the 1990s.

A growing number of New Zealanders believe the population has less life insurance than it needs, according to industry research. In a survey for the Financial Services Council conducted last year, 71 per cent said people are under-insured, up from 59 per cent in a similar survey conducted in 2011, although the FSC said the change is only indicative because the methodology and sample sizes of the earlier research were different. The survey found 62 per cent of the 2061 respondents said they didn’t have life insurance while another 9 per cent said their policies were inadequate. Even more said they don’t have income and/or mortgage insurance – 86 per cent – or critical illness insurance – 89 per cent – and those levels were little changed from the 2011 survey. “While many New Zealanders are aware of the importance of types of life insurance, this isn’t reflected in adequate levels of cover for themselves,” said FSC chief executive Richard Klipin on releasing the research. The research report, Gambling on Life, is the third FSC has published based on a quantitative survey conducted between December 2018 and May 2019 and on qualitative research resulting from two focus groups in May 2019. Klipin didn’t directly answer the question as to why the latest report has been published so long after the underlying research was conducted other than to say that “this was the time we selected” and that he doesn’t expect sentiment will have changed much in the interim.

He also said it was “complete happenstance” that the release came a day after the Reserve Bank, the industry’s prudential regulator, released its own paper on life insurance, although he had been aware it was coming. The RBNZ paper that found life insurers in New Zealand tend to be more profitable than their peers in other OECD countries, pay out less in claims, have higher costs and to have less solvency capital. Klipin said the combination of the RBNZ paper and the FSC research “probably provides a deeper conversation for those deeper into the world of insurance” but that he doesn’t want to comment on any of the RBNZ findings. “What’s clear to us in the sector is what the Reserve Bank does is put a mirror, or shine a light, on what we do well and things we need to do better,” he said. “There are a number of serious confronting issues that are facing the sector” stemming from last year’s conduct and culture joint review of the industry by RBNZ and

the Financial Markets Authority, which is the life insurance industry’s conduct regulator. In September last year, the two regulators said they were disappointed by the life industry’s response to the review and that the industry needs to do “significant work” to address weak governance and ineffective management of conduct risk. The lack of action was despite the 16 insurers included in the review identifying at least 75,000 customer issues valued at least $1.4 million that they needed to address. Klipin said that “it’s sufficient to say the sector is spending a lot of time looking at itself, its products and services and how it can best deliver to New Zealanders”. He stressed that the industry paid out $1.5 billion in claims to consumers in 2019, up from $1.15 billion in 2017, and that there were 3.93 million life insurance contracts in place at September 30 last year. FSC figures show the industry collected nearly $4 billion in premiums in the year ended September. A key issue for the industry is churn. The vast majority of “new” life insurance policies sold in NZ are actually replacing existing policies, although the Financial Markets Authority, the industry’s conduct regulator, and the industry disagree on the exact percentage – it could be anywhere between 87 per cent and 98 per cent of sales, depending on who you believe. There can be valid reasons for replacing existing policies, such as changes in personal circumstances, but much of the industry activity appears to be designed to boost advisers’ income.

But of course its what it can do that really counts. In this respect the proof is as they say in the pudding, for this 508 was one of the ten 2019 Car of the Year finalists. For starters, its performance is such that it can be hard to convince passengers that the turbo-petrol engine is just 1.6 litres. Especially with the way the 8-speed auto keeps the engine working in its most effective range and so makes full use of the 300Nm of torque available, which shows with the swift acceleration (0-100km in 7.3 seconds) and quick overtaking. Then with the engine sitting at just 1800rpm while cruising at a constant 100km/h, the claimed combined fuel economy is 5.7L/100Km. That economy is helped out of course by its slippery shape (the Cd is just 0.26) and the strong but light new platform, with lots of aluminium used (front mudguards, bonnet and hatch) keeping the weight

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

down to around1500kg. There’s four selectable driving modes which alter the engine/gearbox responses, the suspension and the steering to suit your driving desires, mood, and/or the conditions. So there’s lots to appreciate from within the particularly smart, cockpit-styled cabin, which has a real sense of occasion and sporty ambience with its high quality trim materials and pleasing attention to detail in the fit and finish. It’s a nice place to be! This 4.6-metre long 508 sits low, so getting in and out is a totally different for those used to an SUV, especially for rear passengers with the sloping roof requiring them to duck their heads. But this was never a problem. The black leather front seats not only look good but proved to be well-shaped for both everyday and sporty driving. As well as being heated, they have selectable, rather delightful massage functions.

Then there’s the excellent dash and controls, from which you view and use from behind the sculpted steering wheel. There’s a wide centre touchscreen, with large easy to use alternative controls for switching between the screens. Sitting directly above said steering wheel, and in direct line of sight are the speedo and rev-counter. The format of these can be easily changed to show just digital speed, sat-nav directions etc. Harking back to the drive modes, whichever of these is selected means the well-controlled suspension (McPherson strut front, multi-link rear) comes up with sharp, nimble handling and excellent cornering. Plus, there’s tenacious grip from the wide Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, which were also suitably quiet on rough chip. Meanwhile, the ride delivered is an excellent compromise between firmness and compliance, depending on your selection. The brakes of course match the cars sporty potential. For touring there’s 487 litres of luggage space, which is easily accessed via the powered hatch. With back seats lowered, 1537 litres can be stowed. Last but certainly not least, the 508 comes with strong safety credentials through being loaded with active safety and driver assistance technology including active cruise control.

PEUGEOT 508 GT ■■ Pricing: $55,990 (plus ORCs) ■■ Engine: 1.6-litre, 4 cylinder turbo-petrol. 169kW@5500rpm and 300Nm@2500rpm ■■ Transmission: 8-speed auto-front-wheeldrive. ■■ Quoted Economy: 5.7L/100km. ■■ Turning Circle: 10.8metres ■■ Tows: 745kg un-braked, 1600kg braked. ■■ Safety: Comprehensive driver assist/ safety packages.- 5 star ANCAP rating expected ■■ Warranty: 3 year warranty and roadside assistance package.

FINALE This great looking, sporty hatch, which is large enough to comfortably seat four, not only impressed with its quality and ability to be an involving and enjoyable driver’s car, but it also so easily slotted into being a very easy everyday drive. Oh yes - if a bit more luggage space is needed there’s also an equally good looking 508 GT wagon.

Jeep’s rock star

J

eep’s new Gladiator is the first Jeep factory-designed and built pickup truck – or ute to us Kiwis – for 18 years, and it was launched to the international media in Central Otago. That meant spectacular driving roads and scenery, some proper off-roading – and a fleet of 20 Gladiators fresh from the factory with their steering wheels on the wrong side. There’s a touch of the surreal about the Gladiator anyway. Yes, it’s a ute in roughly the same segment as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux. But it’s also the world’s only convertible pickup truck; more than that, one where you can also fold down the windscreen and remove the doors. So don’t expect any work-trucky versions. Like Jeep’s last pickup, the Cherokee-based Comanche from 1986-92, this is all about highend lifestyle. Jet skis, beach parties and definitely cappucinos in the city. As you might surmise from the pictures,

Gladiator is mostly Wrangler from the B-pillar forward (including the dashboard). But it’s unique from there back, including a more sophisticated five-link rear suspension system that owes a lot to the Ram 1500. It’s big. The wheelbase is 479mm longer than Wrangler, it’s 691mm longer overall … and more interestingly, 175mm longer tip-to-tail than a Ranger. Gladiator is not quite as adept off-road as a Wrangler, thanks to that rear overhang (departure angle drops 3 degrees to 26deg, for example). But it’s still staggeringly capable in the rough and the gap isn’t massive unless you’re a true “Jeeper” who wants the ultimate off-roader. Gladiator gets the same 209kW/347Nm 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engine as the Wrangler, matched to a slick eight-speed automatic transmission. Final NZ specification isn’t decided, but expect at least the choice of Overland or Rubicon specification: the former for a more comfort-oriented experience, the latter for serious rock-hopping.

Want to see lots of lovely old and not quite so old vehicles before they take off on a Rally? Well then, head over to 86 Maronon Road on Saturday morning, where Vintage Car Club members will be departing on their 51st Annual Rally. Get there around 9.30am to get a close-up look before the first car leaves at 10.00am.

Porsche - adding to the driving experience

P

orsche is adding two distinctly sporty and high specification models to its mid-engine sports car range: the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0. The new two-seaters are powered by a 294 kW (400 PS) four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine, similar to that used in the 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4. When combined with the manual six-speed transmission and sports exhaust system, this results in exceptional power delivery and a particularly rewarding driving experience. It achieves the sprint to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 293 km/h. Thanks to standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports suspension, as well as a 20 millimetre lower ride height and Porsche Torque Vectoring with mechanical limited slip rear differential, the new generation of GTS achieves a remarkable balancing act between dynamic handling and everyday comfort. The standard Sport Chrono package with upgraded Porsche Track Precision App also emphasises the

athletic character of the mid-engine sports cars. Black contrasting design elements and a dark Alcantara® interior create highlights typical of GTS models. As with the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4, the powerful four-litre engine is characterised by exceptional efficiency. Adaptive cylinder control that alternately switches off one of the two cylinder banks at low loads, direct fuel injection with piezo injectors and a variable intake system also contribute to the car’s efficiency. The GTS engine also impresses with its superior power reserves and immediate response characteristics. It effortlessly revs to 7800 rpm and, thanks to the standard sports exhaust system with dynamic damper control, also enjoys the acoustic advantages of the rich six-cylinder boxer engine sound. The 718 GTS 4.0 models adopt the twin tailpipe sports exhaust system with integrated gasoline particulate filter from the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4. The price of the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 starts at $176,700 & Boxster GTS 4.0 at $178,700 with first deliveries expected in the third quarter of 2020.

Butt in confident mood By Adam Hamilton Former champion Kiwi driver Anthony Butt is genuinely buzzing heading towards Melton’s huge meeting on Saturday night. Despite his stellar record in some of Australia’s biggest races, headlined by seven Hunter Cup wins, Butt’s record in the Victoria Derby and Oaks has been bleak. Remarkably, he hasn’t won a Derby and has only jagged the one Oaks title, aboard Geoff Small’s brilliant Pullover Brown way back in 2003. “My one chance of winning the Derby was Lavros Star (1997). “I won the heat on him, but got suspended and Ricky May won the final on him,” Butt recalled. The now NSW-based Butt is confident of turning it all around at Melton this week. And the punters have thrown their support behind him. Butt trains and drives heavily-backed Derby favourite, Line Up, who ran blistering time leading throughout in his heat at Ballarat last week and is drawn to

Anthony Butt has plenty to look forward to on Saturday night. lead again from gate three. He’s been $2.40 into $2.25 on the Aussie TAB since drawing gate three. “It’s a fantastic draw, especially being inside Governor Jujon, who looks the main danger,” Butt said. “Line Up really impressed me last week. “He only came to us a couple of weeks before the heat, but obviously I’d driven him in those big

races over in NZ. “He’d been working well and I was keen to hold the front. “He did a terrific job in quick time after having to sprint three times. “He’s a great chance of leading again and has come through the heat win really well.” Butt’s hopes of winning a second Oaks sit with Cran Dalgety’s speedy and improving filly, Dr Susan, who led, then took a trail

on Stylish Memphis and got clear too late when second in her heat at Ballarat. “She was only starting to windup on the line last week. “I was keen to hold the front, but Mark (Purdon, driving Stylish Memphis) had one crack at me and then his filly started to pulling hard, so when he came again I took the trail knowing it was a heat,” Butt said. “There will be no handing-up this week, that’s for sure. “We’ve drawn really again (gate five) and can hopefully find the front, while Stylish Memphis is outside the back and will have to work hard to get around the field and outside of us. “Maybe she will just be too good Stylish Memphis, but Dr Susan is one of those fillies who has just absolutely thrived on the trip away. “She’s getting better and better.” Dr Susan has been backed from $3 into $2.50 and is now equal favourite with Stylish Memphis on the Aussie TAB.

■■KARAKA

Bosson eyes up further Karaka success Opie Bosson doesn’t mind getting called greedy. Especially when it comes for his desire for further Karaka Million success. The champion jockey will team up with Cool Aza Beel in Saturday’s Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) and partner last year’s winner Probabeel in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m). Probabeel completed a treble of Karaka Million wins for Bosson and Te Akau at the same meeting last year after earlier success with Melody Belle (2017) and Avantage (2018). That recent strike-rate prompted some good-natured ribbing this week from Pukekohe trainer Nigel Tiley, who will saddle $1.90 Karaka Million favourite Play That Song. “Opie’s won enough, hasn’t he? “Three in a row is greedy. Four in a row would be very greedy.” Bosson, who guided the Tiley-trained Silent Truth to win at Avondale on Wednesday and declared Play That Song as the horse to beat on Saturday, said he would be putting thoughts of winning four in a row at the back of his mind and concentrating on the job at hand with Cool Aza Beel. “He’s a different type of horse to the other three but he’s still got that natural ability,” Bosson said. “He’s come through his Tauranga win really well. “He looks outstanding.” Fairdale Stud-bred and sold Cool Aza Beel secured his place in the Karaka Million with a comprehensive three-length win at Tauranga last week after an ear-

Opie Bosson is on stranger to Karaka glory – but he wants some more. lier win at Wanganui and a luckless fourth placing in the Listed Fasttrack Insurance 2YO Stakes (1100m) at Pukekohe, when Bosson was suspended for failing to ride his mount out in the final 50m. “He was quite impressive at Tauranga. He gave me a really good feel. I liked the way he relaxed and the last 600m of his race was top-notch,” Bosson said. “I would probably preferred

he had drawn four or five rather than two but we are going to have to use the barrier a bit, otherwise we’ll get shuffled back. “Play That Song looks the one to beat but I think my bloke will make her know he’s there.” Just as he has done for the past three Karaka Million meetings, Bosson will shed the kilos to ride Probabeel at 54.5kg in the threeyear-old race and is looking forward to the race after the Sava-

beel filly’s emphatic fresh-up win at Awapuni earlier this month. “It was a very good run and there was heaps of improvement in her,” Bosson said. “I galloped her on Monday at Ellerslie and her work was pretty good. She’s not a great trackworker because she’s so laid back but she’s going well. “She looks good and feels good and she’ll be a good chance again.”

Unbeaten filly aims even higher Matamata trainers Ken and Bev Kelso will look to raise the bar for exciting filly Levante after taking her to Te Aroha for today’s ParkMate.co.nz 1400. The three-year-old daughter of Proisir has had two starts for two highly impressive wins, producing scintillating finishes from the back of the field to win at Matamata on December 6 and December 28. She was ridden on both occasions by Ryan Elliot, who will be in the saddle again in the $25,000 three-year-old race at Te Aroha today. “She’s been pretty impressive in both starts so far and has shown a lot of ability,” Ken Kelso said. “We’re very happy with her heading into this race on Friday. “Her work’s been very good, she’s eating well and continuing to thrive. “We thought about running her in the Mr Tiz Trophy (Gr.3, 1200m) at Ellerslie on Saturday, but decided to take a softer option this week. It should be a nice race for her. “If she runs well again on Friday, we’ll look at stepping up to blacktype level for her next start. “That will probably be in the Mufhasa Stakes (Listed, 1300m) at Ellerslie on February 29. “We’re taking things one race at a time with her, but that’s the plan we’ve got in the back of our minds at this stage.” The Kelsos will still have representation at Saturday’s rich Ellerslie meeting with Princess Kereru lining up in the Gr.2 Westbury Classic (1400m). The Pins mare was a star over shorter trips last season, winning the Gr.3 Waikato Stud Plate (1200m) and Listed NZB Finance Sprint (1200m) and finishing second in the Gr.1 Sistema Railway (1200m). After a fast-finishing third in the Gr.2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Pukekohe in November, she stepped back down to 1200m and finished 10th in the Railway on New Year’s Day. “Her sectionals were okay in the Railway, but we were still a fraction disappointed by her run there,” Kelso said. “We’re thinking she might appreciate 1400m now. “Those races aren’t quite so pressurised all the way. That was the case in the Breeders’ Stakes at Counties, where she ran really well. “So the idea behind running her in the Westbury, rather than perhaps aiming her at the Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham last week, is that we think these 1400m fillies and mares’ races might be more suitable for her now.” Meanwhile, multiple Group Two winner Supera is on the comeback trail following the slight setback that ruled her out of last month’s Gr.1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie, for which she was the TAB’s fixed-odds favourite. “She’s back in work now,” Kelso said. “She’s over that little hiccup and going very well.”

Weather has massive impact Some of the so-called true blue courts at the Australian Open were coated in red after a rain front that lashed Melbourne yesterday morning and pushed through a dust storm from the northwest and left its mark on the city and the tournament. Crazy weather has plagued the season-opening major at Melbourne Park and caused yet more disruptions on Day 4, when two-time major winner Garbine Muguruza had to wait for the roof to be closed on Rod Laver Arena before completing her 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 second-round win over Ajla Tomljanovic. Muguruza said as well as having a “tough battle to the end,” against her Australian opponent, she had to concentrate on staying patient with all the changing weather conditions. Smoke from devastating bushfires on Australia’s east coast caused air quality in Melbourne last week to be ranked among the worst in the world, and impacted qualifying for the season’s first tennis major. Heavy rain on three of the first four days of the tournament has caused more difficulties for players and organisers. On Day 3, a blustery wind made conditions difficult. On the plus side, there are three stadiums with retractable roofs, so the show court matches will always be able to proceed. In the other completed singles matches yesterday, sixth-seeded Belinda Bencic and Donna Vekic advanced to the third round. US Open semi-finalist Bencic beat 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 7-5, and 19th-seeded Vekic had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Alize Cornet. “First it was sunny, almost raining, windy,” Bencic said. “You just have to accept it and try your best to adapt.” Heavy morning showers delayed play on all outside courts. That combined with the dust left a layer of red on some outside courts, making them unplayable in the morning. Melbourne Park staff used high-pressure hoses to clean court surfaces. Light rain became heavy in the early afternoon, forcing the suspension of the only two matches that had started on outside courts. The Australian Broadcasting Corp said the “dirty rain” from the overnight downpour had forced public pools to close and left some cars with the appearance of having been “sprayed with mud”. Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Richard Carlyon told the ABC the brown rain was the result of dust storms, not bushfire smoke. Right – Donna Vekic sends down another big serve on her way to victory over Alize Cornet at the Australian Open yesterday. PHOTO AP

Taylor comes to the defence of Williamson’s captaincy Batsman Ross Taylor has jumped to the defence of Kane Williamson, claiming the Black Caps cricket captain still has plenty to offer the team. Following last month’s Boxing Day test where New Zealand were crushed by Australia, former Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum suggested Williamson had lost his love of the role. McCullum questioned some of Williamson’s tactics and said his successor wasn’t enjoying the role as much, describing him as a “reluctant leader”. McCullum’s comments sparked

rumours that Williamson could look to step down from the captaincy in the T20 format following this year’s World Cup. However, Taylor didn’t believe Williamson giving up the captaincy was necessary. “I think he’s got a lot to offer this team as a captain in years to come,” Taylor said. “Kane’s been through a lot over the last little while. “Obviously the World Cup was pretty interesting for the whole team ... but I’m sure he’ll make the right decision for him and the team.

“I don’t think giving up a format as captain is necessarily the right way but him having breaks every now and then to take a bit of load off is what I think will be best for himself and the team. “I think he’s doing a fantastic job, whether or not he takes breaks here and there.” With the disastrous series against the rampant Australians still fresh in their memory, the Black Caps are now looking forward to a change in format and opponent. Taylor said it was great having fresh faces join the squad ahead

of this weekend’s T20 matches against India at Eden Park. “Any time we play India it’s a pretty exciting thing. “To be at home with two games against the best team in the world, that’s what we live to play for and hopefully we can start the series off well,” he said. “There’s a lot of people in the squad who weren’t even a part of [the series in Australia] and I think that they bring a new dynamic to the team. “But the guys who obviously were over there will want to get back on the horse so to speak, and

obviously a different format in conditions that we know well and hopefully we can get off to a good start.” Taylor added he didn’t believe there was an easier path to selection for Cantabrians and that players should be selected on merit. “There’s obviously a lot of ND [Northern Districts] people in the team and I come from Hamilton. “I don’t play for Northern, but if you’re the best players, regardless of where you come from, you should always be picked for the team.”

Venues for World Cup revealed

Walking netball was a huge hit last year and it’s set to make a return to the courts next week.

PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

■■NETBALL

Return of walking netball Mid Canterbury Netball is bringing daytime netball back to the courts at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre next week. Monday netball and Tuesday’s walking netball were both launched a year ago and they ended up proving to be a big hit, thanks largely to the fact that they cater to any player of any ability. You don’t have to be fit, and you don’t even need to have ever played netball before. It’s all about giving people an opportunity to get active, and getting as many people as possible playing netball, Mid Canterbury Netball development officer Natalie Shaw said. “There’s the social element too. “People want to get out there,

play with their friends and have fun,” Shaw said. Monday daytime netball is your typical netball – seven a-side and normal rules – and it’s great for stay at home mums and dads, or people who may work at night and can’t play in Mid Canterbury Netball’s evening competitions, Shaw said. Walking netball is exactly how it sounds – netball where you’re only allowed to walk around the court. There’s no running and no jumping, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. In fact, in some ways it’s harder, because naturally when you play netball your instinct is to run, as Mid Canterbury Netball’s new centre manager Erin Tasker

found out when she gave it a go for the first time at the end of last year. The principles of walking netball are the same as your traditional netball, but the added restrictions, like one foot having to stay on the ground at all times, means you have to employ slightly different strategies. Tasker quickly found out it was a far greater workout than she was expecting, and a whole lot of fun. “After playing a quarter at centre I was really surprised how much of a sweat I’d built up, but I had so much fun and couldn’t wait to have a go again the next week,” she said. Walking netball takes place on a Tuesday at 9.30am at the EA Networks Centre and costs just

$2 per game, while daytime netball runs on a Monday at 9.30am and costs $5 per game, or $40 for the term. Both sessions are an hour long and are open to men and women, people of all ages and abilities. Parents are welcome to bring their kids along to sit on the side-line and watch mum or dad play. Term 1 kicks off this coming Monday, January 27, and will run until the end of term. Daytime and walking netball take a break during the school holidays. There’s no need to register, people can just turn up and give it a go, and Shaw is hoping that people will continue to do just that, as they did in the first year.

The six cities which will host games for next year’s women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand have been named. Auckland’s Eden Park will host the opening weekend of games while Christchurch’s Hagley Oval will be the venue of the final with Wellington, Tauranga, Hamilton and Dunedin also named as hosts. The tournament, which will feature 31 games, will take place between February 6 and March 7. It will be the third time New Zealand play host to the World Cup, last time being in 2000 when the White Ferns won the final in Lincoln. The Canterbury region also hosted the 1982 final when Australia beat England at Lancaster Park. Hamilton and Tauranga will host semi-finals with the final in Christchurch to be a day-night game, pending installation of lights at Hagley Oval. ICC women’s Cricket World Cup CEO Andrea Nelson said the tournament promises to be a truly national event. “Our goal was to ensure all 31 matches will be played at the best venues, encompassing a geographic spread that ensured as many Kiwi sports fans as possible get to engage with the tournament,” Nelson said. “It was great to see the enthusiasm from so many cities bidding for a chance to welcome the best players in the world to their backyard.”

Silver Ferns send a message with dominant victory By Liam Napier Two-from-two and, just like that, the Silver Ferns have emphatically booked their spot in the Netball Nations Cup final. It goes some way to explaining the Noeline Taurua transformation that this comprehensive 7145 victory at the Birmingham Arena was New Zealand’s first against Jamaica for four years.

During the Janine Southby era the Ferns lost their past three games against the Sunshine Girls – the last occasion coming with the five-goal defeat at the forgettable 2018 Commonwealth Games. On the back of their World Cup success last year the Ferns are, clearly, a vastly different beast under Taurua. They now seem oddson to add the Nations Cup title to their trophy cabinet too.

Hot on the heels of Monday’s 16-goal dismantling of the England side in Nottingham to open this tournament, the Ferns largely continued their new-found confidence in what is expected to be a prelim of the final after Jamaica defeated South Africa in their opening match. Seeking to build on the momentum from her side’s opening win, Taurua opted for the same

starting seven. Despite the towering presence of Jamaican shooter Jhaniele Fowler New Zealand comfortably eased out to a seven-goal lead in the opening quarter. Aggressive zone defence limited possession for Jamaica while at the attacking end New Zealand showed patience, speed and slick movement with their relatively new combinations.

Jane Watson and Karin Burger, who continues to establish her presence at wing defence, nabbed several intercepts to inspire the Ferns to stamp their authority to lead 32-22 by half time. The Ferns next meet South Africa on Sunday morning (NZT) before squaring off in the final the following day in London. At this point it appears they might just canter to the title.

SITUATIONS VACANT

Making bad choices By Chris Rattue

N

o, I’m not getting in behind Ian Foster. The All Blacks can do with one less supporter for now. Because yes, it still p***** me off that Scott Robertson was overlooked for the All Black job. Time is not healing this wound. With the season about a week away from kickoff, the opposite reaction is taking place. The more I think about the decision, the angrier I get over the arrogance and complacency involved. New Zealand Rugby isn’t getting away with this that easy, not in my world. What were they thinking? How did they get it so wrong? Where was the desperation to turn things around? Gone is the raw fire which used to drive rugby, replaced by corporate ways – designed to protect those at the top of course – which have encouraged complacency to blanket the game. The rugby hierarchy uses the country’s All Black loyalty to get away with incompetence. We’re getting screwed. Departed coach Steve Hansen may have been right in claiming his successor Foster wasn’t getting the respect he deserved. After all, Foster was part of a brilliant All Black set-up. But on the other hand, Foster wasn’t part of a brilliant All Black coaching set up at the end. He wasn’t even part of a very good one. That horrible, ridiculous, pathetic, haven’t-got-a-clue World Cup semi-final performance against England involved the most comprehensive thrashing of an All Black side in a massive game EVER. England were superb, but an All Black side full of world-class players were rubbish. If that doesn’t get you sacked, then what the heck does? If Hansen had put himself up for re-appointment after that, he should have got the boot. His time was up. His formerly great team had collapsed. Yet his assistant gets the top job. There was a weird arrogance involved in appointing Foster, as if to say the All Blacks

suffered one bad day rather than being out-manoeuvred over the long haul. The All Blacks – make that New Zealand Rugby - have totally lost me on this one. It was time for brave revolution, not questionable evolution. Triple Crusaders champion Robertson was the breath of fresh air that rugby desperately needed at the top. He would have re-invigorated a game that is dying on its feet in this country. Robertson has a smashing record, as a winner working with some of the best players in the world and promoting newcomers at the Christchurch-based rugby super power. He wasn’t the finished article as a test coach, but no one is when they start off. Foster certainly isn’t, that’s for sure. Robertson is a man who looks outside the square and he’s still doing it, bringing in another overseas coach – the previously unheralded Mark Jones – at the Crusaders. He was the antidote to a game that is going stale. Look at Super Rugby, which is undergoing the softest launch since Simon Someone took over at the National Party. You couldn’t make Robertson up in our national sport. He’s different, he connects with people, he’s still relatively young, and he is crazy successful. I know people who are completely disinterested in rugby who know of Razor and are intrigued by the man. NZR stared a gift horse in the mouth and told him to go away ... and do what exactly? So he keeps winning at the Crusaders, which proves what? How does that make him a better All Black coaching candidate? And if he loses, his stocks are lowered. If he goes overseas, to try and prove whatever they want him to prove, he may be lost to the All Blacks forever. The timing may never be right. If Foster does enough to survive long term, Robertson will remain sidelined and unable to show what he could have drawn out of New Zealand rugby. I don’t want to bag Foster outright. He’s not a failure, he clearly has his strengths, but he was not the man for this job, not when Robertson was available. And yes, it still p***** me off.

Simon Shuker’s Code Cracker

Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Relationships are a two-way loop. Just as you toil to present your best self, the other person toils similarly to receive your ideas and meet your expectations. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Psychologists refer to the “integrated self” like it’s possible for a complex creature in an equally complex environment to be fully united in thought, emotion and action. We can only do our best. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Avoid those who can’t take a joke and won’t give one. The humourless lack subtlety of thought, are risk-averse and worst of all are apt to spread the soulsucking disease of seriousness. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Though thoughts may whiz by in an unintelligible blur, the emotion you’re feeling is evidence of their content. Slow down, rewind, investigate. Chances are those sadness-producing thoughts aren’t even true. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll ruminate over an exchange. Sure, in the greater scheme of things perhaps this exchange is meaningless with results of no real consequence, and yet somehow it also means everything. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You get to choose who you spend time. Most people take the best of the ones they see around them, sampling from but a few hundred of the 7 billion people on earth. You’ll have luck casting a wider net. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): People worth their salt will foul up just like the rest, but they’ll own up to their mistakes and try to make amends. Anyone who tries to brush errors under the rug is a potential danger source. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Word of the day: pantisocracy – a utopian social order in which all are equal. The group won’t get there. None ever has. But anything you can do to shore up differences will be appreciated. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): There are invisible tethers that hook you into certain people and endeavours and keep you there. There is so much else you could pay attention to if you wanted. Why? See if you can figure it out. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): As for these thoughts you’d rather not have, you don’t have to flee, battle or bottle them. Avoid feeding them. Try distraction. Not everything has to be turned into an emotional journey. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You are no longer afraid of the thing that used to keep you from love. Take a moment to acknowledge the growth and really absorb what it’s like to be here... because you’re about to have another spurt. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’ll go on unselfconsciously just doing you. What you believe is simply the right thing to do in the moment will be heroic and deeply moving to someone else.

Dallas gets another shot By Matt Markham

Scott Robertson has shown loyalty to some of his younger Super Rugby contenders by throwing them back into the deep this weekend for their second pre-season fixture of the year. Off the back of an impressive performance last Saturday against the Hurricanes in Ashburton, Robertson has named a number of his younger prospects in the starting line-up for this weekend’s clash against the Highlanders today in Wanaka. And included in the line-up is Mid Canterbury’s Dallas McLeod. After producing an impressive shift in the opening half of last

weekend’s romp over the Wellington based Hurricanes, Robertson has given the former Mount Hutt College 20-year-old a further opportunity to impress, naming him to start at second five-eighth in today’s clash. It’s a further nod towards the prospect of the young player and while once the likes of Jack Goodhue and others return to the mix in the coming weeks, it’s enough to suggest that McLeod is in with a shot of getting some serious game time when the competition begins. Robertson said during the week that the performances of some of the younger members of his squad in Ashburton last week

made the selection process a little trickier this week. ‘‘As coaches, we were really pleased with what we saw in Ashburton, particularly from some of our young players who certainly put their hand up,’’ Robertson said. ‘‘We’re proud of them for taking their opportunity and it’s given us something to think about ahead of round one next week. ‘‘The pre-season is a chance to test some of our combinations and structures, and we’ll do more of the same this Friday night.” David Havili has been named to lead the squad and will play the match from fullback, in what is a very strong Crusaders back-

line featuring Braydon Ennor, Brett Cameron, Will Jordan and Mitchell Drummond who took no effects from his nasty knock last week against the Hurricanes. Meanwhile the Highlanders have taken a two-half approach to the match, naming sides for both stanzas, one of which includes former Crusaders playmaker, Mitch Hunt.
