Falloon under police investigation By Matt Markham
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Look! A UFO P7
P2
Police have launched an investigation into now-former Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon following allegations that he sent unsolicited explicit images to a number of young women. News of the police re-opening their case followed Falloon’s former boss, National Party leader, Judith Collins revealing a fifth complainant had come forward on Wednesday night with another allegation of inappropriate behaviour from the now disgraced MP. On Tuesday, police confirmed they had investigated the initial complaint earlier in the month but had found it didn’t meet the threshold to warrant prosecution, in that particular statement they encouraged anyone with
information to come forward as they were seeking further information on the matter. Yesterday, the statement was a lot more to the point. “Police can confirm we are investigating and will not be making any further comment at this time,” a police spokesperson said. Earlier in the morning, Collins – while visiting the Wairarapa – confirmed that she had received a fifth complaint in regards to Falloon and did all she could to distance herself from him – stating it was now a matter for the police. “He’s no longer a National MP,” she said. “The more women who come forward to the police, the more evidence the police will have.
“People involved in this sort of behaviour, that he’s clearly indulged in, are manipulative and I think it’s best placed with the police now.” The latest allegation has come from another “young woman” Collins confirmed. Falloon’s fall from grace publicly began on Monday when he announced he wouldn’t be seeking re-election in September – citing mental health issues. Later that evening news came to light of unwanted messages being sent to young women from Falloon while he was drunk and by Tuesday morning he had resigned from his role, effective immediately. Falloon is yet to speak publicly since the fallout.

Doris, 103 and looking to future By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Doris Wakelin lives by a pretty simple motto – get up, get on with it and never look back. Today, she celebrates her 103rd birthday and said that, apart from good genes and good health, living to a ripe old age has plenty to do with your attitude to life. “I’ve always believed that you have to forget the bad bits and remember the good and look forward to what’s coming. The good parts in life become your memories,” she said. Doris is very much a child of the Ashburton District. It’s been her home for all of those 103 years, it’s the place where she was raised, educated, married and raised a family and now it’s the place where she’s happily settled in a small flat, caring for herself, cooking her own meals and sharing time with her family. Her family was part of an early Ashburton business, Moore’s drapery. She attended Hampstead School (she’s proud of being the school’s oldest ex-pupil), and received her secondary education at Ashburton Technical College. Like many girls of her time, she left school at 16 to take up housework positions with families with a new baby or where the mother had been hospitalised. As one of a family of six and the oldest daughter, it was also her job to share the workload at home with her mother. Unlike many of her friends, however, Doris had two homes, one with her family and one with her aunt. “I’d been with Auntie Fan since I was born as we lived two streets apart and she’d often pick me up on a Friday night and take me back to Granny’s with her. I was her flower girl and when she married I moved in with her and her husband and her daughter was more like a sister to me,” she said. That two home status also meant she came in for more than her fair share of spoiling, Doris admitted. She met husband to be George Bishop through work.

“I didn’t normally work on Saturdays but this woman had just had a baby and asked if I’d go in and help out and her brother was
there.” The rest is history, but a history that shows the lengths a couple will go to for love.
“He used to ride 33 1/3rd miles every Saturday from the Ashburton Gorge down and back on Sunday night. If a nor’wester was
blowing, he’d get off his bike and sleep under a gorse hedge,” Doris said. “I’d be baking him a cake when he got here. He was fond of marshmallow square and I always made that for him.” The cake clearly won George’s heart and the couple married and had six children. Those child-raising years, living on farms around the district, were wonderful, Doris said and today she’s lost count of the number of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren that are part of her family. George became ill and died in 1973 when Doris was in her early 50s. “He was a great husband,” she said. Lost without George by her side, Doris decided to get a job and started work at a supermarket in Ashburton’s Triangle. Her job was to pack bags of flour. Also working in the packing area was Wilfred Wakelin. His job was to prepare vegetables for sale. Love bloomed and marriage followed. Doris says she counts herself lucky to have had two ‘lovely’ men in her life. Today, she’s still a member of Netherby Women’s Institute, first joining the organisation at Maronan in 1955. She no longer knits and sews, but said in the past she enjoyed both crafts and was a dab hand at whipping up underwear for her grandchildren. “I used to read a lot but gave that up because I’m not one to put a book down. I’d sit up until one or two in the morning reading, but today it’s television I enjoy, particularly The Chase. And I love doing puzzles. I buy a lot of magazines for the puzzles.” Today she’s having an open home, welcoming visitors with cake and coffee and tonight she’ll head to the RSA for a celebratory shandy. “That’s my only tipple and only on birthdays or at Christmas and it has to be a good one, a half and half.” Staying true to her belief in looking to the future Doris is planning to celebrate her 105th birthday.

■■RANGITATA ELECTORATE
National appoints caretaker MP By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Waimakariri MP and National’s junior whip Matt Doocey has been appointed the caretaker MP for the Rangitata electorate following the sudden resignation of Andrew Falloon. “The Ashburton office will remain open to Rangitata constituents,” a National Party spokesperson said. Doocey would look after any constituent queries and issues for the next three months. “Constituents who have issues are encouraged to contact the office and they will organise appropriate assistance,” the spokesperson said. “Matt Doocey is an excellent MP, and is capa-
ble of filling the gap for Rangitata constituents.” Yesterday, Doocey had his Member’s Bill, which would require the Department of Corrections to notify schools of sex offenders, drawn in Parliament. He urged people who supported the bill to go to his website and sign a petition. “My bill will ensure all schools within five kilometres, or the nearest school if there are none within the five kilometre area, will be notified of the placement of a sex offender,” he said. “It will require the Department of Corrections to notify local schools 48 hours before the release of a sex offender into a community, or within 72 hours of housing the sex offender in a new residential address.”
Who is Matt Doocey? Matt Doocey was elected as the Member of Parliament for Waimakariri in 2014. He lives in the electorate with his wife Viktoria and their daughter Emily and son James. Prior to politics he had a long career in mental health and healthcare management, including in the delivery of community health, mental health and social care services both in voluntary and government settings. He was National’s first ever spokesperson for mental health, and in 2018 wrote to every political party in Parliament to invite them to join a cross-party approach that would focus on developing solutions and policy over a longer period than the Parliamentary three-year term. He believed that by initiating a bipartisan approach, this would break down some of the barriers to progress to improve mental health outcomes in New Zealand. Last year Sir John Kirwan
launched the Mental Health and Addictions Wellbeing cross-party group, with the executive consisting of Doocey, Louisa Wall (Labour), Chloe Swarbrick (Green Party), Jenny Marcroft (NZ First) and David Seymour (ACT), to work together to improve mental health and wellbeing in New Zealand. As well as being spokesperson for mental health, Doocey is National’s Junior Whip and a Health Select Committee member. He is a born and bred Cantabrian, and went to St Bede’s College before studying a BSc (Hons) in Social Policy, an MA in Healthcare Management from Kingston University in London, and an MSc in Global Politics from Birkbeck College, University of London. After pursuing opportunities in the UK, he decided to return home to give something back after the Canterbury earthquakes and took up an opportunity to work at the Canterbury District Health Board.
Matt Doocey has been named as caretaker MP for the Rangitata Electorate.
■■ASHBURTON DISTRICT
Dramatic rise in the number of unemployed By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Unemployment in the Ashburton District has skyrocketed as the impact of Covid-19 erodes business confidence and carves swathes off bottom lines.. As the June quarter wrapped up, the Ministry of Social Development’s benefit data shows there were 702 people registered on Job Seeker support, more than 50 per cent up on the num-

ber in June 2019, which was 475. Over the past five June quarters, Job Seeker numbers have fluctuated between this year’s high and a low of 400 in 2017. For several years, unemployment in the district ran in the very low 100s, but started to climb into 300 plus in 2015. The big surge in unemployment, however, is not being reflected in the number of people looking for jobs, says Personnel
Placements owner Wendy Robertson. During the Covid-19 lockdown, Robertson said she had anticipated an influx of job seekers when Alert Level 1 arrived, but that had not happened. “We’re looking at pretty much the status quo and people who are wanting work are matched up quite quickly,” she said. This week she had been at a job recruitment meeting in Ti-

We’ve got labouring jobs that we’re struggling to fill and roles to fill where we don’t have a lot of people applying.” Yes, there had been people who had been let go by employ-

ers because of a downturn in business, but they were finding work quite quickly, she said. For the June quarter there were 1461 people receiving a benefit of some kind, but with numbers little changed for sole parent, supported living and other benefits. In the June quarter there were 282 recipients of a sole parent benefit and 459 on supported living.

Christchurch rates rise more than forecast Christchurch rates will increase by 3.8 percent on average - a rise which is more than had initially been proposed. Yesterday the Christchurch City Council finalised its budget for the 2020/21 Annual Plan. The budget provides for an average residential rate rise of 2.09 per cent – which equates to an extra $1.12 a week for an average valued house – and an overall average rate increase of 3.8 per cent. For businesses the average rate increase is 3.34 per cent – $8.26 a week and for remote rural properties is 4.59 per cent – $2.58 per week. Councillors failed to push through a new charge for using excess water targeted to households that use more than 333,000 litres of water a year, which by default increased the original rates increase from 3.5 to 3.8 per cent overall. The coronavirus lockdown forced council staff to rip up February’s original budget and re-write it. “The Covid-19 pandemic has caused hardship and left many in our city struggling financially,” acting mayor Andrew Turner said. However, the council agreed that ratepayers facing ongoing financial difficulties could apply for a payment extension scheme, giving them a grace period which would enable a 2020/21 rates payment postponement until 30 June 2022.

No stage too Farr for Roger By Heather Mackenzie
heather.m@theguardian.co.nz
In so many ways, Roger Farr is the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Not the building itself though, but as centre manager for the past 12 years and an active member of the trust that built the building, he is very much a firm part of the furniture. And he’s loved, and times probably loathed, but above all else, enjoyed every moment. “This has been an interesting journey, with never a dull day,” he said. Sitting alongside his passion for the success of the centre is his equal desire to assist local theatre and music groups as much as possible. “We do everything we can to support and lift local organisations up to a standard that is reflective of the quality of the centre. “It is quite remarkable what they achieve from their first auditions to the live performance. There is so much fantastic talent in our community, it just blows me away.” Farr said having regular high-quality local performances is great for the community and it also fosters loyal ticket buyers too. There can be a bit of a myth that if it’s a local show, put on by amateurs, it won’t be that good, but Ashburton audiences know that is not the case here. “We have spent the last few years building and maintaining our reputation for booking high quality professional shows.” Sixty-three per cent of our venue hire is from local organisations and the shows are always well supported. “I know we could put Mama Mia on again tomorrow and it would sell out.” Farr understands the value of getting children and young people on stage. He said the local primary schools’ kapa haka show each year is a highlight for him. He said being on stage with a group of fellow students is just like playing a team sport as everyone has to pull together to make the product work. They learn so much during the lead up to the show and it’s great for their confidence, he said. “It is pretty special to be on stage and perform in front of 500 people. It takes a lot of guts to do that,” he said. Farr’s pride doesn’t stop at the onstage performances, he is full of praise for the venue and the technology on offer too. In the way of lighting requirements, the venue designers always had an ace up their sleeve with Farr, as he was an engineer in a past life and had a long interest
Roger Farr out helping promote auditions for Mamma Mia back in 2017. in stage lighting. “The lighting we put in to begin with was pretty basic when I first started, we have come a long way since then.” While Farr hasn’t had any formal training in lighting engineering as such, he did have the opportunity to sit alongside the late Robert Young on several shows they did together. Farr lists Young as his single biggest influence. “He was very demanding, he knew exactly what he wanted,” he said. The self-learning techniques must have

paid off, as Farr said he quite often gets promoters of big international acts swing by to check out the venue and are total surprised by what they find. “They tell me we are better than some of the larger city venues, they add us to their touring schedule as a result.” Clearly 2020 has been the year to forget for many reasons, so with that in mind Farr thinks the pure entertainment value of musicals is in some ways more important now than ever. Musicals are pure entertainment, with easy-to-follow story lines and familiar tunes. “When you think back to the war years, it was often music and entertainment that pulled them through tough times and it can do it again now.” Farr said choosing what international acts and comedians they chose to grace their stage, can be a bit of a tricky business. He said New Zealand audiences, as a whole, tend to be a suspicious bunch, who do not like to go outside their comfort zone too often. “We need to put on things that theatre-goers can relate to, it could be an absolutely hilarious show, but if people have never heard of it, they won’t come.” Farr said if the unheard-of show is running for three or four nights, the audience numbers will pick up as the word gets out. But as most shows are only on for one night relying on the word-of-mouth ticketing system was not an option. Like any good manager, Farr appreciates how valuable the staff are. We can work long days here, during our busy times, 60 or 70-hour weeks are not uncommon, he said.
PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN
“This is a demanding place to work and being hospitality, it is often anti-social hours. Staff can quickly turn off or leave our employment if they feel they are under-valued and are not made part of the decision making processes.” If they have an unusual set up request that has not been done before, Farr said he gets all his staff together and they thrash out the different options to make it work as a team. “Quite often they will come up with a solution I have not thought of,” he said.

OUR VIEW
Sue Newman
SENIOR REPORTER
What’s the definition of true story telling?
I
f there’s ever been a week in the news that’s been ruled by incredulity, shock, disbelief and more, it’s this one. Whether you’ve been an avid follower of political antics or not, you cannot have escaped this week’s unfolding smorgasbord of disasters. The cynical could say it’s been a journalist’s dream. But has it? What’s been going on up the road in Wellington is just one slice of newsroom life. It’s the sensational and challenging part. What also goes on in a newsroom, every day of the week, is the real stuff, the stories about the people, places and events that make our district tick. That’s real, hometown news and as a news team in a provincial paper, that’s the news we love to write. Stories about our people, the people who make our place tick. Yes, what happens in other parts of New Zealand is important, we’d be pretty shuttered in outlook if we tried to ignore national and international issues, particularly when they impact on our own patch. But they’re not our grass roots, heartland stuff. They’re not our news team’s unique product. For the Guardian team this week has been one divided. We’ve done what had to be done with the dramas unfolding among politicians, but that news was also being spelled out by national media across a range of mediums. We were just one more in the mix, admittedly the one best placed to put a very local spin on what proved to be an uncomfortably local issue. But running alongside that we were also doing what only we can do, tell the stories of our own people. Some of those stories that stir the heartstrings, others will amuse or entertain, but they’re all our community’s stories and only we can tell them. Let’s not get blindsided by unpalatable dramas unfolding outside our patch, we have a team of 35,000 here doing great things every single day. Theirs are the stories that ultimately shape our community.

National down by the bow A
s “Jolly” Judith stands on the bridge of good ship National – monarch, at last, of all she surveys – she may not be fully aware of the damage sustained, both below and just above the water-line, by the vessel she now commands, after the recent battering it has suffered at the hands of, unavoidable, apparently, political currents, From her lofty perch, she may not, either, have noticed what’s going on at sea level far below, namely, the abandonment of ship by huddled groups of disillusioned Nat MPs looking to make an exit while they still can and, they hope, on their way to getting a real – ie corporate – job. At this rate National will be seriously under-personelled when it comes to taking on the Jacinda juggernaut in a matter of a few weeks. Mesdames Kaye and Adams, in what seems just a few days ago, were seen marching proudly on each flank of their latest Great White Hope leader, the tall, talented Todd Muller. With heads held high and bright eyes focused firmly on the future, a future offering an opening into an endless political nirvana from which there need be no return. But wait! Out of left field – that perennially dangerous quicksand of sud-

den disaster and hopes destroyer – came the collapse of Muller and his embryonic National band of would-be warriors, via the mishandling of private papers by a foolish, junior MP. At once the Muller bubble was burst and all those within it cast adrift on yet another sea of uncertainty. Kaye and Adams paused only to raise their heads marginally higher still before striding to the door marked Exit (for good). Enter through the revolving door, Judith Collins, going the other way. For National, it might be thought to have been an epoch-making moment. That, surely, is how the indomitable Collins saw it, she who has waited for National’s top job for as many years as many of us can remember. However, after waiting so long on the periphery of potential greatness, Judith might reasonably feel a bit miffed her chance, when it has finally arrived, has
come at a moment in National’s fortunes when morale is self-inflictedly low and she faces a now well established rival in Meteorite Jacinda – the voice of calm in a crisis and the star of the political firmament. Still, the polls recorded a blip of encouragement when Crusher emerged from the National pack so perhaps the upcoming election is now not quite the foregone conclusion it seemed likely to be in the very recent past. Whatever the outcome, I shall be an interested observer on the sideline but no longer empowered to write a comment about it in this newspaper. I am, in those only too familiar words of our time, being “let go” as if I have been trying to break free for the past 16 years! I can assure you, I have not. Having a platform from which to express my political views has been a real privilege and I have been much in the debt of the Ashburton Guardian for that. One final political point; I have never been much impressed by the doctrine of MMP, as foisted on the electorate now many years ago. Under the banner of greater “democracy” it has often brought together parties of mutual dislike and aims for the
purposes of Coalition, leading to hobbled government and ill-feeling. That Winston Peters and his NZ First has usually been one of those parties has doomed the system to failure and uncertainty as has, too, the List seat, a rarely representative position, which has allowed into Parliament many who should never have qualified for a seat in the House. So that’s it from me. Over and out! The views, opinions, positions or strategies expressed by the author and those providing comments are theirs alone, and do not necessarily reflect the views, opinions, positions or strategies of the Ashburton Guardian Co Ltd or any employee thereof

UFO spotted! W
ow, what an unbelievable few weeks it has been! I’m not about to start throwing any stones in our former MP’s direction, for fear of smashing up my surrounding glasshouse. But I do need to get this off my chest! The coverage of the recent comings and goings in politics has highlighted some real concerns for me. I really worry about the direction our journalism is heading in at the moment. I get the feeling that some of our TV journos are searching for cracks in their subjects. Just the smallest of cracks that they can get their nails into initially, followed by their fingers and then hands. Then prying those cracks open until the subject implodes. It seemed like that’s exactly what they did with Todd Muller. They quickly realised he wasn’t a great “quick on his feet thinker” so the questions came thicker and faster. He looked more and more uncomfortable each time I saw him on the telly. Watching the footage of Andrew Falloon arriving at the airport for the “Will we vote Judith in as leader” meeting – the reporters reminded me of our labrador Bowie doing some training with food rewards. Excitedly bouncing up and down, sniffing out the reward. There are two differences though. 1. There was a PACK of Bowies at the airport, scrapping
Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR
over the bone. 2. Eventually Bowie will calm down, sit and roll over. The airport bone was only a small, “Are you going to run for leader against Judith?” bone. Imagine how juicy today’s bone would be if he was spotted at the airport. I worry about online journalists as well. I have heard some of the bigger players get paid ‘per click’ on their stories. So the majority of their focus ends up being on producing a sensational headline that extracts clicks and the story content is very much secondary. I have read many stories online and thought to myself, “what does this have to do with the headline?” One overseas media site I follow, as a part of my show prep in the mornings, has videos pop-up continuously. I would guess about 10 per cent of them I would want to watch, the rest are either violent
or celebrity rubbish. I have actually stopped going to the site in question as the last thing I want to see at 4.30am is a person getting beaten by a gang of thugs on the streets of London, or something similar. It’s a sad reflection on today’s society if that’s what gets people clicking. On a more positive note, although I’m sad for the Guardian team, especially those who have lost or are losing their jobs with the move to three days. I do like the direction they are taking, with the destination being more in-depth LOCAL news and stories about
LOCAL people. That is the kind of news I want to read about. Oh, and by the way, the UFO mentioned in the headline? Unidentified Fabricator Online. Got your attention, eh? WATER, IT’S THE ESSENCE OF LIFE AND IT’S W
hen we turn on the tap, we expect high quality water to flow and we expect our rivers to be clear and clean. Water is a blessing, but water can also become a curse if there is too much of it at the wrong time and in the wrong place. Unwanted, uncontrolled water can wreck land, lives and homes and ensuring that doesn’t happen relies on teams of experts. Whether they’re drainage contractors, roofing specialists or plumbers, they’re the people we rely on to ensure water is where it’s wanted, when it’s wanted. Below ground, on the roof, or running through the pipes in our homes or places of work, water that’s carefully controlled ensures we remain dry inside our homes, that our sections are not water-logged and that turning on the tap or the shower will see clean water flowing freely. None of that happens by accident, it requires the work of highly skilled people who have learned their trade through apprenticeships and honed their skills on the job. They’re the people who do the mucky jobs.
Plumbers
A
plumber installs and maintains pipes in our homes and businesses. These pipes need to be installed and maintained for potable water, drainage, irrigation and sewage, as well as other uses. Plumbers can be involved in hands-on work or may work in a design capacity, drafting blueprints and helping make the installation process more efficient. A qualified plumber can be part of a larger team or he can be a sole trader. And it’s a job that often spills over into retirement as parttime work. Plumbing is not a job for the home handyman. A qualified plumber knows about building regulations and safety standards and works to make sure those standards are upheld. Make a mistake on your DIY plumbing job and it might
cost more to fix than the original job done by an expert. And often, if your plumbing goes wrong, you might not discover the problem for some time. It might not become apparent until there’s a damp smell in the kitchen, bathroom or laundry or your taps simply run dry or the backyard becomes a quagmire. A plumber might be a tradesperson but there are times when a plumber could be considered an emergency service, if a pipe bursts or a cylinder springs a leak in the middle of the night. They’re the one person who can fix the problem, and that’s a plumber. Plumbing is a job that will never become redundant – if there’s running water then there are pipes and plumbers involved.
Drainage
I
ncluded in the wider range of plumbing work is drainage. That’s the heavy duty work, digging trenches, laying pipes and ensuring water flows deep underground to whereever it’s needed. When homeowners experience a fault with their plumbing or drainage system, many are left wondering what action they need to take to rectify the issue. Whether your home is experiencing a blocked drain or a leaky tap, you may be left questioning, what do plumbers do that is different to drain contractors. If your drains have started emitting nasty smells or your bath is taking a while to empty, your property is probably suffering from blocked drains. Although these symptoms are noticeable inside your home, the root cause is often found in your drainage pipes underneath your property.
For all your plumbing needs . . .
Drains that need unblocking, replacing and relining, or have burst, mean the expertise of a drainage specialist is often needed Drainage specialists can carry out CCTV drain surveys by inserting specially designed CCTV cameras down the drains to check their condition. From blockages to rodent problems, CCTV drainage technology provides access to hard to reach areas to identify any type of problem so no stone is left unturned. As opposed to plumbing experts who focus on fixing problems with water entering your home, drainage experts are specially trained in removing foul waste from your premises as carefully and hygienically as possible. In turn, this will keep your septic tank in top working order.

SOMETHING WE TAKE FOR GRANTED
Roofing and spouting
W
e might take our roof and spouting for granted, but if either springs a leak, life can be pretty unpleasant as water makes its way through a ceiling or in the case of leaky spouting, pours onto gardens and paths. Regular maintenance of your roof and cleaning out of spouting can keep problems at bay and there are a range of features that can be added to spouting to ensure leaves and other debris does not block the flow of
water from roof to drain. When it comes to working on your gutters, no matter how much DIY experience you have, it’s always better to leave gutter installation to a professional gutter installation company. Your guttering is a critical element in the design of your home so it’s important that it is installed properly to avoid potential water damage. If it is not installed properly, you could end up with an expensive bill for your roofing, your home’s
exterior, your driveway and even the interior of your home. When properly installed, guttering should last you for years. It can also complement the overall look of your home. Continuous spouting eliminates leaking joints and gives your facade that sleek, attractive look. While it may be more expensive, the extra initial cost is always worth it as you won’t have to pay for repairs in the near future.
Problem gutters and spouting can cause all kinds of issues from annoying overflows to structural damage to your home. Once your guttering and spouting is repaired, keep a maintenance schedule. To prolong the life of your guttering and keep it debris-free, Gutters should be cleaned out frequently to avoid buildup of debris/leaves and regular care and maintenance of your gutters pays off long term. It will save you money, make your home last longer.

ith its most recent step into the world of electrification, the Jeep plug-in hybrid propulsion solution is capable of enhancing the legendary off-road capability of its line-up of SUVs, starting with the Renegade 4xe plug-in hybrid. This latest evolution of JeepÂŽ fully reflects its core values of freedom, adventure, authenticity and passion. Jeep has always pioneered new segments and new technologies. Its legend started in 1941 with the Willys-Overland, the first ever mass-produced
4x4 vehicle and continued in 1949 with the launch of the four-wheel-drive Willys Wagon, which created the Sport Utility Vehicle. Its renowned off-road capability has endured ever since and it is now being electrified the Jeep way. The Jeep Renegade 4xe is centered on the pillars of efficiency, performance and responsibility. It will be the most fuel-efficient Jeep SUV ever, with the new 4xe technology offering zero tailpipe-emission in full electric mode. Efficiency is not achieved at the expense of performance. The Jeep Renegade 4xe remains true to its all-terrain vocation while
offering an enhanced driving experience on the road, with smooth responses and acceleration. The increased torque generated by the electric motor and the ability to adjust it with extreme precision ensures even greater four-wheel-drive capability on any terrain, for extreme off-road adventures. The Jeep Renegade 4xe pairs a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor, located between the rear axle, which is powered by an 11.4 kWh battery that can be recharged while driving or through an external power outlet or charge point. On its own, the efficient 1.3-litre turbo
engine delivers a power output of 130hp or 180hp, plus the 60hp produced by the electric motor, giving a total of 190hp in the Longitude and Limited version or 240hp in the Trailhawk model. In terms of torque, the electric motor produces 250Nm, while the combustion engine delivers 270Nm. The combination of an internal combustion engine and the electric units guarantees performance and maximum driving pleasure, with acceleration from zero to 62mph in around 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 81mph in full electric and up to 124mph in hybrid mode.

Birds, Buicks and Bristols A big challenge
L
ast week Val McDougall (nee Bird) and Sue Bird (nee Tilley) laid down a challenge. Their challenge was to find out if any cars have ever been manufactured under the brand name Bird, and if so to tell readers about it. Following considerable research, it seems no-one sharing their family name has manufactured a car. So sorry Val and Sue, doesn’t look like you’re heirs to an automotive conglomerate. But while we haven’t discovered a Bird car, we have of course realised that several manufacturers have used the names of birds to denote models. Understandable really, because birds can be sleek, aerodynamic, and powerful – all in one package. Like some cars. Automakers picked up on this early, realising a cool bird name would sell their vehicles. So far, more than twenty models of cars have been named for birds – some real, some mythical and they go way back. In 1928, you could buy a Stutz Blackhawk. The following year, a Kissel White Eagle. For years Ford Falcons have glided along roads dodging Buick Skylarks, Plymouth Roadrunners, and AMC Eagles.

Interesting reaction The magnificent Ford Thunderbird
And who can forget the Ford Thunderbird – made famous by the Beach Boys in their song Fun, Fun, Fun, when they sang “she’ll have fun, fun, fun ‘til her daddy takes the T-bird away”. British car maker Riley produced Kestrels. Bird-named cars peaked in the 60s and 70s, with Pontiac’s Firebirds and Jeep’s Golden Eagles. The Toyota Tercel shares its name with a male falcon. The challenge from Val and Sue has
made us think of some great cars. Now one may be mistaken, but one is sure Val and Sue said if this writer didn’t come up with something he would have to perform the “bird dance”. However he is sure they also said if he did meet the challenge they would perform that dance. Well this writer reckons he’s sort-of met the challenge; whether Val and Sue think so is another matter but we have it on good authority they do a mean bird dance, and we can’t wait to see it.

fter our story a fortnight ago in which we mentioned Murray Smith’s lifelong involvement with motor vehicles, we got this message from Murray and Janis Smith’s son Marcus, who lives in the States. Marcus said he learned some things about his dad and grandfather that he didn’t know. Like – “Dad got his driver’s license in a straight 8 Buick, how cool is that? “I got my licence in an automatic Datsun Sunny. “I imagine a straight-8 was a whole lot harder to drive. “No wonder Dad can drive anything with wheels.”
Surfing the never-ending channels can be rewarding
N
o doubt many readers will relate to this scenario. It’s Saturday night, on goes the TV, but after scrolling through all the channels, nothing appeals. It’s happened before and it will happen again, accompanied by some oft-said but best unrepeated words about programming. It happened again last Saturday night, but not without an interesting outcome. Purely by chance, the channel surfing brought up a film just at the very moment the actors were travelling in what was unquestionably a superb 4-door saloon, finished in a deep burgundy colour. An interior shot, which disclosed lots of luxurious tan leather upholstery and a classic wooden dashboard loaded with instruments, was followed footage of the exterior. What a car! This fabulous machine glided along a street which looked like – and in fact was – an English Mews. Other traffic and parked vehicles like a Rover 110, a Mark 3 Zephyr and a Mark 2 Jaguar provided good clues to the story being set in the 1960s. No badging could be seen, so what was this car? The process of elimination kicked in; it was right hand drive, it was in England, and it looked English. It had all the hall marks of an upmarket British car of the time.
Definitely not continental – it had to be English. So the guessing game began, and what better way to start than by going through the alphabet. A: Alvis – no didn’t think so. B: Bentley – no not quite, but then a lightbulb moment – how about Bristol? And that’s what it is – a Bristol 405. A car which couldn’t be more British, and what’s more it couldn’t have a more British name. So what’s the story about Bristol cars? The Bristol Car
Company was a manufacturer of handbuilt luxury cars headquartered in Bristol, England. After the Second World War, the Car Division of the Bristol Aeroplane Company was formed, later becoming Bristol Cars Limited.
Bristol had only one sales showroom, situated in London. They were always a low-volume manufacturer, for example in 1982 only 104 cars were produced. The company suspended manufacturing in March 2011, when administrators were appointed and subsequently the company was dissolved. But in 2011, a new company was formed with the object of selling the original assets to Kamkorp. Since 2011, that company has been restoring and selling all models of the marque. The company has revealed a desire to return to automotive production and may well do. Let’s hope they can! The Bristol 405 entered production in 1954, when it was well received, not least for being Bristol’s only four-door model. The 405’s power comes from a six cylinder front-mounted engine. It has a 5-speed gearbox. The model remained in production until 1958, with just 297 saloons and 43 drophead coupés produced. Very rare cars! So what about the movie in which the Bristol 405 appeared? Don’t know, can’t say, went looking to find out about the car instead. But Rowena Hart, who knows a lot about movies, says it’s a great film with a good storyline. Featuring a car like that it would have to be and actually the experience is a reminder – surfing the channels can be a good thing after all.

sensational trio of early Ferraris confirmed for this year’s Salon Privé Concours d’Elégance, including perhaps the most significant car in the Italian marque’s illustrious history. The 166MM that will grace the lawns of Blenheim Palace scored two famous victories during 1949, and in doing so it helped to create the Ferrari legend. In April of that year, the works-entered chassis 0008M won the Mille Miglia in the hands of Clemente Biondetti and Ettore Salani. Then, two months later, Lord Selsdon and Luigi Chinetti took it to victory in the world’s most high-profile motor race – the Le Mans 24 Hours. It remains the only car to have won both of those prestigious and gruelling events in the same year. The historic 166MM will be joined by another of the very earliest Ferraris – a 1948 166 Inter Coupé, chassis number 0015S. This Touring-bodied beauty was displayed at the 1949 Geneva Salon and retains its original jewel-like 1995cc V12 engine. Completing the trio is a 1952 Vignale-bodied 212/225 Export that boasts significant period competition history. Ferrari has a history of success in the Salon Privé Concours d’Elégance, and last
year collected more class awards than any other marque courtesy of such iconic models as the 250 GT LWB California Spyder and the 250 GT SWB. In 2020, Maranello’s finest will join some of the most
coveted motor cars in the world, with the entry encompassing everything from a 1904 Napier to a 2019 McLaren Senna. All will be judged to the very highest standards by the International Chief Judge Advisory Group (ICJAG). Ferraris are also bound to feature prominently in the Salon Privé Masters by Pirelli and Lockton. This year, the event celebrates the evolution of the supercar, from the dawn of the genre in the 1960s to the technological wonders of the 21st century. Ferrari models set to take part both in the Masters and the Concours d’Elégance include mid-engined V8s such as the 308, 328 and 355, the front-engined V12 599, and supercars in the form of the F50 and the landmark F40.

Bringing the story right up to date, Ferrari will be showcasing its latest models during Salon Privé Week. The all-new Ferrari Roma continues a long tradition of sublime GT cars to emerge from the famed Maranello plant, and features a front-mid-mounted turbocharged V8 engine giving more than 600bhp. The Ferrari Roma will be displayed alongside the SF90 Stradale – named for the 90th anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari – the 812 GTS and the F8 Spider. hree fastidiously restored Norton Commando sports bikes – each regarded as amongst the best examples of their respective models in Australia – are amongst the 13 restored classic motorcycles on offer at Shannons upcoming 2020 Winter Timed Online Auction from August 19-26. The jewel of the trio, all restored to an exceptional standard by noted Sydney Norton specialist, Paul Hibbard, is a rare and very desirable 1974 Commando John Player 850 (left, below). This single year ‘tribute’ bike, with its 828cc air-cooled OHV parallel twin engine, is a rare sight in Australia, as the majority of the estimated 200 built were delivered to the USA. Because of the quality of its restoration and its rarity, this visual replica of the factory’s racing bike of the era is expected to command $24,000-$28,000 on August 26. Another stunning Norton Commando is a 1971 Commando 750cc (above) that has had in excess of $20,000 worth of new or old stock parts sourced from the UK used for its restoration. he fourth-generation Kia Sorento will be equipped with a newly-developed ‘Terrain Mode’ feature when European sales start in the second half of 2020. Terrain Mode will provide Sorento drivers with improved traction, stability and control on mud, snow and sand, with dedicated new driving modes for each. The system will make all-wheel drive (AWD) versions of the new SUV more capable than ever across a range of low-grip surfaces. Controlled using the Mode Select dial on the centre console, drivers can switch to Terrain mode to choose from Mud, Snow and Sand modes. The system automatically optimises the drivetrain to best suit each scenario, adjusting engine torque output and distribution, as well as stability control characteristics. Terrain Mode also adjusts shift timings for the two available transmissions (eight-speed dual-clutch transmission for diesel models, six-speed automatic for hybrid variants) to suit different surfaces. Pablo Martinez Masip, Director of Product Planning and Pricing at Kia Motors Europe, comments: “The Sorento has always been a highly capable vehicle, and the new model demonstrates how Kia has evolved the car for the modern era. The first-generation Sorento, launched in 2003, paired all-wheel drive with a robust body-on-frame chassis, making it a solid performer in all conditions. 17 years on, the fourth-generation model uses advanced drivetrain technology to enhance its abilities further. “The Sorento is now more capable than ever, and is designed to provide drivers with greater confidence and control at the wheel.”

Deferred Rugby Championship raises selection questions By Adam Burns
adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
T
he picture is becoming clearer around the prospects of international rugby in 2020. After weeks of speculation and debate around what options are workable, it seems the Rugby Championship, played entirely in New Zealand, is the favoured option as administrators attempt to kickstart test rugby in highly convoluted Covid times. World Rugby confirmed plans for the temporary international window between late October and early December, with the southern hemisphere quadrangle series set to be played over a sixweek period between November
7 and December 12. These time frames raise some curious selection questions, not to mention how much involvement prospective All Blacks will have in the upcoming Mitre 10 Cup. Before the commencement of Super Rugby Aotearoa, there was strong desire for a provincial competition littered with top drawer test names in a unique one-off during the concentrated professional era. Should the Rugby Championship cement its plans, it presents an interesting situation for Ian Foster in how test candidates are managed. The high intensity of a compressed Super Rugby Aotearoa

will undoubtedly be factored in. As strong a product as Super Rugby Aotearoa has been, there are going to be some tired and battered bodies once the competition wraps next month. Questions have been raised by the players themselves around the sustainability of such an all-consuming model. Throw in a North and South game late next month, and there
is a strong case for halting any All Black squad involvement for their respective provinces given the workload. The Eden Park North versus South matchup on August 29 may very well be the last chance for players to stake All Black claims. However it leaves a window of two-plus months of limited to no action ahead of a Rugby Championship commencement in early November. Foster and co will want to avoid having too big a period of no game time before locking horns with their southern rivals. Could it mean All Blacks play limited minutes off the bench for their provinces?
Does it leave an opportunity for a one-off test against one of the Pacific nations as they did last year before the World Cup? There are already some compelling selection discussions occurring as a stirring Super Rugby Aotearoa competition heads towards the business end – not even the recently-appointed All Black captain Sam Cane or two-time World Rugby Player of the Year Beauden Barrett are immune to scrutiny at present. Whatever the rugby makeup looks like over the next five months, it makes the next couple of weeks fascinating, where there will more at stake for players than mere competition points.
■■RUGBY
NZ likely as big rugby venue World Rugby has recommended a revised international calendar following the disruption due to the Covid-19 outbreak. A temporary international window between October 24 and December 5 has been proposed by World Rugby’s executive committee. The Six Nations Championship can resume at the end of October and a new set of international matches involving the northern hemisphere teams can be played in Europe from November 14 to December 5. With uncertainties surrounding international travel in the southern hemisphere, the committee has proposed this year’s Rugby Championship is hosted in one country over a six-week period between November 7-December 12. Southern hemisphere rugby’s governing body Sanzaar has said its preferred host for the competition is New Zealand, where the coronavirus threat has been contained in recent weeks. World Rugby said special measures will be implemented in line with any government-required quarantine period before the
start of the competition. The global rugby calendar is in a state of flux due to the pandemic which has caused most cross border and domestic club competitions to be suspended since March. Scheduled tours by European teams to the southern hemisphere were cancelled and the postponements have placed financial strain on most rugby nations, with even the leading countries predicting multi-million dollar losses in 2020 due to reduced television, commercial and ticket revenue. The recommendations to temporarily change the international window will be tabled at a virtual World Rugby Council meeting on July 30. “Subject to approval, the full schedule of matches will be announced by the respective union and international competition owners in due course,” World Rugby said in a statement. “All parties remain committed to continued dialogue regarding long-term men’s and women’s calendar reform that harmonises the international and club environments for the betterment of all.”
Coles to miss Crusaders clash Impey diagnosed
Dane Coles won’t be wearing the Canes colours tomorrow night.
The Hurricanes have suffered a setback ahead of Saturday’s Super Rugby Aotearoa match against the unbeaten Crusaders in Christchurch. All Blacks hooker Dane Coles has been ruled out with a calf injury, meaning Asafo Aumua will start in the number two jersey. The Crusaders will also be without one of their All Blacks, with centre Braydon Ennor replaced by Fetuli Paea. Will Jordan is at fullback in place of David Havili, who’s out for the remainder of the season with a broken thumb. The Crusaders haven’t lost a home game in four years, with the Hurricanes the last side to beat them at home in 2016. Meanwhile former All Black Richard Kahui will make his debut for the Western Force in their Super Rugby Australia clash against the ACT Brumbies in Sydney on Saturday night. The 35-year-old Kahui was a member of New Zealand’s 2011 World Cup winning side and has spent the past seven seasons playing in Japan.

Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan says the thoughts of the Australian rugby community are with Impey and his family. “The partnership between Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby is one built on history and friendship which we really value above all else, and is in large part due to the leadership of Brent since he be- Brent Impey came chairman in 2014,” McLennan said. “We wish Brent all the best and hope for a speedy recovery.”

AQUA AWARDS By Adam Burns
adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
Members of the Ashburton Swim Team have been recognised by the club following a fruitful season. The club hosted its annual general meeting and prize giving at the weekend, with some of the region’s young swimming talent receiving acknowledgement. Attention now shifts to the upcoming swim season, with Lucy Reeve and Mitchell Veix confirmed as new club captains. Methven’s Bree Middleton won trophies for Highest FINA points and Closest to a New Zealand Record. It caps off a stellar year for the Mount Hutt College pupil, who donned the silver fern at last year’s Australian State Teams Championships. Several other trophies were handed out to club members on Sunday. Hannah May-Joyce won the senior Tait Family Trophy, alongside Chloe Lowe who clinched it for the juniors. Most Improved XLR8 points went to Hannah King (13 and over) and Lucie Hood (12 and under), and Bailey Tait won the Swimmers’ Choice Award. There was further recognition out of the water with Nigel Joyce winning the Volunteer Award and Andrea Scammell earning the Official Award. “A special thank you must go to those who have volunteered their time to be a part of our committee this coming season,” a club spokesperson said. “We are also pleased to welcome a couple of new members onboard, and are sure you will bring exciting things to the table.”
Methven’s Bree Middleton was a winner at the Ashburton Swim Team’s club AGM and prize giving last week.

■■ADDINGTON
Juniors take centre stage By Joshua Smith Luke Whittaker, one member of a determined trio of junior drivers intent on getting this year’s New Zealand Junior Driver Champs off the ground, is looking forward to his hard work coming to fruition this weekend. A Cantabrian at heart, Whittaker is looking forward to returning to his home region to compete in front of his family. “Something I strive for every year is to make my family proud,” he said. “When I go out there I am not only representing myself, I am also representing my family and employers.” Whittaker will have five drives at Addington Raceway tonight and Sunday and said he has been allocated a couple of strong winning chances. “It’s just the luck of the draw with the drives, but we are just happy to be there,” he said. “We are very fortunate and thankful for the trainers to put their horses in and get six races off the ground.
“I have got a couple of nice drives. “Adam Patron has been really good lately, winning his last two. “Trent Yesberg’s team has been flying, so he will have him ready. “And Anamajor has probably raced a lot better horses in the last couple of weeks. “He won well two starts back and he should hopefully be running on late.” The Cambridge reinsman banded together with Alicia Harrison and Sheree Tomlinson to ensure the competition was retained after funding came under threat following the Covid-19 lockdown. “Myself, Alicia, and Sheree thought we would try and get some good sponsors on board, and we have ended up raising $8000 and really getting it off the ground,” Whittaker said. The Whittaker and Tomlinson families are also helping out by putting up the six North Island junior drivers for the weekend.
Luke Whittaker is out to make his family proud on the Addington track tonight.

Phoenix: It’s in our own hands The Wellington Phoenix remain in the hunt for a coveted top two finish in the A-League after beating Perth Glory 2-1 in Sydney. Imports Gary Hooper and Ulises Davila scored a goal each to move Wellington just a point behind second-placed Melbourne City, who’ve played an extra game. The result also leaves the Phoenix as the only side that can deny Sydney FC the minor premiership, although the reigning champions only need a point from their last four matches to clinch top spot. “It’s in our hands,” Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay said. “Our focus was from day one was to make the top six and I believe with the points we have I think we’ve secured a spot in the top six and now we’ll go back and have a look at it and we’ll push as much as we can for that second spot.” New Zealand international Callum McCowatt shone in a rare start for Wellington, laying on the opening goal for Hooper in the 32nd minute. “I thought Callum McCowatt was exceptional tonight,” Talay said. “I thought he had a very good game. “He was very lively, he worked well in the position that he played and he obviously set up Hoops for that first goal.” Hooper started the match and played the first 45 minutes before being replaced
by Davila, who doubled the Phoenix’s lead from the penalty spot just three minutes into the second-half. Both players had limited roles in the club’s first match back against Sydney FC after each spent 14 days in isolation before rejoining the squad this month. “They both got 45 minutes and I’m very pleased with both their performances and that’s what they need. They need game time, they need to be training and it’s very important they got through it.” Davila now believes he’s ready to return to the starting line-up for Saturday’s match against Adelaide United. “He came straight after the game and he said ‘look I want to play in the game against Adelaide’ and I said we’ll just see how you pull up in the next couple of days and we’ll make a decision there.” Talay expects to make changes for what will be their third game in nine days. “For me it’s an opportunity for players that haven’t played in these first two games to get some game time. “The most important thing is to make sure we have players fit leading into the finals so if they need to have a break against Adelaide we will give them a break so they’re ready for the next game and make sure that we have everyone available and we don’t break any players leading into the finals series.” Ulises Davila (right) celebrates with Reno Piscopo after scoring from the penalty spot.
Liverpool claim the trophy Liverpool has beaten Chelsea 5-3 at Anfield before lifting the English Premier League trophy for the first time. The Reds held on after leading three-nil late in the first-half. The result leaves Chelsea fourth on the table, behind Manchester United on goal difference, with a round to play. United earlier drew one-all with West Ham. The point was enough to secure top-flight survival for West Ham who moved up to 15th place on 38 points, four points above 18th-placed Watford. United will visit fifth-placed Leicester City on the final day of the Premier League season, while Chelsea
will play host to sixth-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers. West Bromwich Albion are returning to English football’s Premier League after a two year absence. The Baggies clinched promotion from the Championship by finishing second in the league, behind Leeds United. West Brom’s drawn 2-2 with Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the season to finish two points clear of London clubs Brentford and Fulham. They will now enter the Championship playoffs with Welsh clubs Cardiff and Swansea. The winner of the four-team playoffs will clinch the third and final promotion berth.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The middle ground isn’t so easily found. You first have to go to two extremes to touch the outlying boundaries. Be patient with yourself. This is a process, and you’re making it up now for the first time. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): There’s an art to envisioning your projects. Think of outcomes that are just beyond the reasonable, so that you’re sure to keep stretching and growing. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): There’s not a whole lot of glory in being in charge right now, but someone has to do it. And because of your strong sense of responsibility, you’re the best one for the job. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Things don’t have to be hard to correct. “No pain, no gain” is an old way of thinking. Find a painless way and you’ll be doing yourself and everyone around you a favour. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Set a tone of friendliness and compassion. The more inclusive you are, the more people you’ll know. The more people you know, the easier it is to find the right person to solve a problem. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): If you distrust yourself, you’ll be wise. It’s the cocky ones who make mistakes, not you. You’ll evade mishaps because you test yourself, double-check your work and question your own answers and motives. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Following the protocol will absolutely work. You will have no need to go outside of the established rules and manners. If your etiquette is on-point, your results will be, too. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Staying humble is the most important aspect of your game plan. The cosmic omens warn against self-satisfaction. Remain focused on what still needs doing. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): This long-term project does have an end, although that is hard for you to see right now. If you can glimpse it, even for a second in your mind’s eye, you can and will have it eventually. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Avoid shopping as an emotional outlet. Instead of spending money on things and people, spend time on them. The rewards will be so much richer. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Do you feel like you’re being asked to navigate the byzantine inner workings of someone’s impossible-tounderstand psyche? Perhaps you are, but the choice is yours. Only do it if it interests you. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There really are things that turn out better because you don’t know what to expect and are utterly unprepared. Bias is usually unavoidable, but a lack of assumptions will work in your favour.

A southwest flow over the country eases today as a ridge pushes on the country from the west. A front embedded in the flow is expected to clear the top of the North Island early this evening. A high builds over the country through the weekend and into Monday, although a couple of fronts brush the far south.

DEFENDING THE SHIELD By Adam Burns
adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury’s senior netball representatives will have a chance to defend some significant silverware in front of their home fans. This year’s Hanan Shield is set for a later than usual date, with the annual rep netball event to be played in Ashburton in six weeks. The call is going out for potential
netball representatives ahead of the September 6 tournament. The annual triangular series between Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago will serve as rep netball’s centrepiece, after the South Island Senior Championships in Dunedin were postponed until next year. It will likely add additional incentive for local players competing
in the current ACL premier netball competition with higher honours also on offer. Mid Canterbury will go into the event at the EA Networks Centre as defending shield champions, following a thrilling one-goal win over North Otago during last year’s final game in Waimate. Coach Claire Tappin will again take the helm in 2020.
Players had until today to register their interest for the tournament. “We won the Hanan Shield in 2019, and would love to defend it on our home turf,” a Mid Canterbury Netball spokesperson said, in a Facebook post earlier this month. Expressions of interests are available on Mid Canterbury Netball’s homepage.
World Rugby recommends revised calendar
