A lack of detail over the Government’s immigration policy is threatening to stall economic growth in Mid Canterbury, Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon says. It was well past time for the government to “come clean” on its plans, he said. “Labour’s policy remains to ‘reduce net immigration by 20,000 to 30,000 a year’, while their coalition partner NZ First wanted to go even further, cutting it by

60,000 to just 10,000,” Falloon said. “Since the election the coalition government have given scant detail about their immigration policy and how it will impact regional New Zealand. “More than two months ago I wrote to the Prime Minister over concerns about the impact of immigration changes on our region. “Other than transferring the letter to Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway, the response to those concerns has been
complete silence. Meanwhile, jobs are unfilled and growth opportunities are going begging. “This week the minister has said they’re looking to roll-out the previous National Government’s Canterbury Skills Shortage List across the country.

■ M. BOVIS
Plea from farmer for support By Colin WillisCroft
Colin.w@theguardian.Co.nz
A Mid Canterbury farmer whose property came under scrutiny as part of the mycoplasma bovis outbreak says farmers need to support each other and make sure those who do come under the spotlight are not left isolated. Craige and Roz Mackenzie, who along with their business partners, farm near Methven, said their property was one that came to MPI’s attention as a result of livestock movement tracing – but it has since been cleared of having the disease. He said in their case no one did anything wrong by buying cows, which is a normal practise but the experience gave them a firsthand look at what it was like for those caught up in the process, in particular the stress involved for both landowners and sharemilkers who understandably worry about their businesses and livelihoods. Dealing with that sort of pressure was not easy and highlighted to him the importance of those in the farming community supporting each other and making sure people were not isolated as a result. Mackenzie said they went public because they wanted to do the
right thing by their neighbours. “We wanted to protect them and make sure that they could protect themselves.”
However, an unwanted result of that openness was a certain amount of public scrutiny and pressure, which was unhelpful.
Despite that, Mackenzie is confident we did the right thing – and he would do it again if he had to.
Those who do come under MPI’s scrutiny have to adhere to strict protocols about what they can and cannot do, measures that Mackenzie supports as a way of helping the industry manage the situation it currently finds itself in. He said working through those protocols gave him a better appreciation of what farmers need to do. “It really highlighted biosecurity on-farm,” he said. This needs to cover all of the service providers such as irrigation, baling and harvesting, cultivation contractors and well as when stock come and go from the property. However, being cleared by MPI did not mean it was time to relax, he said. “Now that we’re in the clear we need to make sure that we remain that way.” He said that included being as transparent as possible. “It’s the only way around the situation. “This should be a wake-up call to get our systems robust in case we have a future incursion such as foot and mouth.” Rural opinion page 11 Hats off to the Mackenzies
■ IMMIGRATION
Government needs to ‘come clean’ – Falloon From P1 “However, a cut of 20,000 to 30,000 migrants across New Zealand would have a huge impact on Mid Canterbury, and so far the minister is offering our region nothing substantive to ensure we’re able to attract the people he does let in. Falloon said Mid Canterbury has been growing strongly in recent years and its unemployment rate was low compared to other parts of the country.
However, he said employers were struggling to find the staff they need to fill the jobs that they have available. “Many have had to rely on skilled and semi-skilled workers from abroad, who have gone on to become fantastic members of our community. “I speak to farmers and business owners almost every day who struggle to find staff. If they could hire a local, they would. They simply aren’t available for

the jobs that are there. “Without workers, our businesses and farms won’t be able to continue to grow.” However, Lees-Galloway said that it took time to implement government policy properly, not least because it was vital to consult with the people who will be affected. “As we do that work, the policy of the previous government remains in place,” he said. “While I have had a lot of nega-
tive feedback from employers about the changes made by National last year, their policy will remain until we are satisfied that our new approach is ready to meet the needs of regional employers,” Lees-Galloway said. He said the government was considering developing regional skills shortage lists in consultation with local employers, councils, unions and chambers of commerce “to better reflect the needs of each region than the
one-size-fits all approach the government has inherited”. “Currently skills and occupations that are in demand locally but not nationally do not appear on any shortage lists outside of Canterbury. In future those roles can be added to regional lists, making it easier for regional employers to find the people they need. “Work is currently under way on that policy and I expect to progress it this year.”

Methven Library memories recalled Marjorie Collins remembers back to the time when she took over as secretary of the Methven Public Library, 60 years ago. She thinks it was from one of the sisters, Alice Stone, of prominent town member Fred Stone, known for operation of the 1925 Stone’s Building on Main Street and a town cinema. Marjorie was a keen book borrower, as were many of the locals in the small country town. It was at a time when the population was measured only in hundreds, before Mt Hutt brought in tourists and before television took over. “A good many more people read in those days, they didn’t have television to rely on,” she said. “We had books and games and the kids used to play outside.” It was in her earlier years of library involvement that it was busy, with large numbers of children every Tuesday, when they would get out of school early and arrive at 2.50pm before catching the school buses. Marjorie served as the secretary for 58 years, stepping down two years ago. She remains a member of the committee, but at the age of 85 is now planning to step down from that once the new library opens this year. “I’m going to pass on my resignation, which I tried to do earlier, but they wouldn’t accept it,” Marjorie said. She plans to remain an avid book borrower, however, and currently makes regular trips to the library’s temporary home in the Mt Hutt Roads Board building. Among favourite genres are biographies and thrillers, and she will generally read dozens of books per year. Marjorie took some convincing to share her library memories, she is a modest woman who does not want to have anything about herself in the newspaper. But she admits that her record of committee membership does make her the longest-serving member, and she was persuaded when told she would be helping to record the long and proud history of the library. Marjorie has seen both good and bad times at the facility over
A modern library building is soon to open in Methven, marking the beginning of a new era for book borrowing in the town. Marjorie Collins is among committee members leaving behind fond memories of when the library operated from a historic building at the site. She reminisces with Susan Sandys.

She and fellow long-serving member of the time, Diana Goldsbrough, were mentioned in a 1983 Guardian article as having “good housekeeping instincts and skill in putting forward their claims for assistance from various bodies” to keep the library operating. Looking back to the 1950s, the article documents this being an era of financial help arriving in the form of the town’s floral festival. Funds from the festival and the county council had enabled the
over its future. Then in December 2011, on a weekday afternoon, a drunk driver took out most of one side of the structure in a crash. He decamped on foot, but was wrestled to the ground by the manager of a neighbouring ski lodge. As it so happened on that day, Marjorie and husband Bob were on their way home, driving into Methven, and were among the first to see the crash’s aftermath. “I saw them holding him down, he was very stroppy,” Bob said. Marjorie phoned the library committee’s chairwoman at the
time, Eleanor Marr, to tell her the heartbreaking news. Seeing the building demolished in 2013 was “absolutely terrible”, Marjorie recalled, however, she understood this was inevitable, and today she is looking forward to the new building opening on the site. And as just a book borrower and not a committee member, she is expecting she will have much more time for reading. “It’s lovely, now I can just go in and pay my fees or my fines or whatever, and go home,” she said.

library to keep a good stock of books, heat the building and have it painted, furnished and carpeted. There have obviously been financial struggles, with one headline from long ago decrying “Methven Library Fees Up by 50 Cents”, in which Mrs Collins was quoted as saying the extra subscription cost would not meet book prices but only help with incidentals. In 2010 and 2011 the Canterbury earthquakes damaged the building and put a question mark

Track dangers to be highlighted By Linda CLarKe

Linda.c@theguardian.co.nz
Volunteer hut wardens on the Mt Somers track will spend more time learning about the dangers of leaving the marked route after a man fell 30 metres to his death in the area last month. Calvin Lim, 29, fell from a bluff on December 22 and it is believed he was attempting to summit Mt Somers from the northern side. The known and marked route to the top is from the southern side. Mt Somers Walkway Society president Barry Austin said terrain off the track could be dangerous and the Department of Conservation planned to get that message through to trackusers via wardens based at the Woolshed Creek and Pinnacles huts. Lim’s death has been referred to the coroner and an investigation is under way. Austin said the walkway society would help DOC publicise the known tracks by adding information boards at carparks either end of the walkway, at Staveley and Woolshed Creek. Lim was acting as a volunteer hut warden on the track, which attracts around 5000 trampers a year, including school parties and international visitors. He failed to make a scheduled check-in and searchers tracked his location by cellphone. Austin said those attempting
to climb Mt Somers from the Pinnacles Hut side needed to be highly experienced with good gear. Even then, it was easy to make a mistake.
“There are some dangerous bluffs around and it is very easy to get into them.” Austin said the new signs would more clearly mark the
original Mt Somers Track, the newer South Face Track and Bus Stop Track, which connects the two near the Woolshed Creek end.
“Some of these tracks have evolved over time and there is some confusion in the names and the walkway society has a project this winter to work with DOC to upgrade and put information boards at both carparks.” Walkway society volunteers have committed many hours to track maintenance and wasp control and say the track is so popular parts of it are wearing out and need more gravel. Other improvements are also planned. Austin said the Mt Somers track was becoming a popular alternative for trampers unable to book into the other popular South Island tracks with official Great Walks status. The area had outstanding scenery and walks for all abilities, he said. It is 35 years since the track opened and the society is planning an event in March to mark the occasion.
Pets need extra care during hot weather By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
As the mercury rises and you seek ways to avoid the summer swelter – spare a thought for any furry friends. With no sign of reprieve from scorching temperatures, Mid Cantabrians are being urged to take precautions to care for pets. Tracey Clark at the Mid Canterbury Animal Shelter said it’s very important to avoid walking dogs
on hot pavements. “If you touch the pavement with your hand and it’s too hot, then it’s too hot for your dog,” she said. “Hot pavements can cause third degree burns on their paws, which is very painful,” she said. She also advised not to take your dog in the car on a hot day, and to ensure ample drinking water is accessible to pets. “And if they’re staying in the
kennels during the day you can fill an ice cream container with water and freeze it, and leave them an ice block to play with while you’re at work.” Pet cooling mats were another really effective way to help out hot pets, she said, and available for minimal cost from homeware stores and pet shops. Lisa Edmond at Petzone Ashburton said it’s important to pick a shady, cool location for
your dog’s kennel. For smaller pets, she recommended filling a two litre milk bottle with cold water, freezing it, and leaving it in their cage or enclosure during the day for something cool to lean against. “That really helps animals like big rabbits in particular,” she said. During the warmer months, the SPCA advise regular grooming to help prevent parasites like
fleas and also sunburn. They suggested purchasing a pet-friendly sunscreen to apply to more exposed and commonly burnt spots, for example, the tips of the ears, on the end of their nose, and on their stomach or any area with little or no fur. Regular sunblock contains an ingredient which can be toxic to animals, but pet friendly sunblock can help prevent skin cancer occurring, they said.

A helping hand for those in need By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
A group of Filipino Freemason friends are on a mission to spread the love and help locals in need. Pagong Ako Kuyang (PAK), a Freemasonic social club first established in the Philippines and now based in countries around the world, has opened its first New Zealand chapter in Mid Canterbury. The group is looking forward to carrying out good deeds where they can – to provide relief to those who need it and promote charity in society, said member John Paul Belarmino. “Helping people is basically our main objective,” member Brian Reodique said. On Tuesday, the group stopped by the Salvation Army Food Bank to give the shelves a generous restocking and Salvation Army community ministries co-ordinator Judith Lilley said it was “really great of them” to put the parcels together. The group also jumped on board the Guardian’s Christmas Wishes initiative shortly after forming at the end of last year, and helped two locals with chores around their homes and gardens. Reodique said back in the Phil-
ippines, PAK also works to give children school supplies, provide aid for abused children and give other charitable relief. The group’s name roughly translates to “I am turtle, brother”, and each country is referred to as a “pond”.
Members refer to one another as “brother turtle”, and new members are referred to as “hatchlings”. Reodique said the group is looking forward to doing more good deeds over the coming months.
$6000 scholarship on offer By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
One local student saving up to start tertiary studies could lighten their load by $6000. The Methven Masonic Lodge and Heartland Bank are teaming up to offer a generous scholarship. Eligible applicants can be any age, gender or be pursuing study at any registered polytechnic or university, and meet just two pieces of criteria. The successful applicant must live in the South Island and have a family member associated with Freemasonry. “Literally dozens of students could qualify,” said master of Methven Masonic Lodge George Currie. “In Mid Canterbury, Freemasonry was very big and strong with our grandparents’ generation. “And we’re definitely keen to attract a local person to win it ... We’d love it to go to someone here.” While Freemasonry can sometimes be a little bit shrouded in mystery, Currie said
the group gave big to charity. Education forms one of the key pillars of Freemasonry and the Methven Masonic Lodge has given generous grants to Mount Hutt College and other institutes in the past. The $6000 tertiary scholarship would give one deserving student a big helping hand, and can be spent by the recipient “however they wish to apply it”, Currie said. Freemasonry and Heartland Bank had long-standing associations and the bank had helped provide the scholarship money as a way of supporting the craft, he said. Applications are open until the end of the month, and forms can be found at http://freemasonsnz.org/ charity/2017/05/10/2017-freemasons-university-scholarships Applicants must submit a 100-word essay on “how this award will assist me in achieving my academic goals”, and the recipient will be announced by the end of March. For more information, Currie can be contacted at mvnlodge51@yahoo.com.
Man impregnated impaired teen Making pregnant a severely mentally impaired teenager with no idea how babies came into being has confined Joseph Michael Stickings, 42, behind bars for five years. The painter and decorator, who was earlier found guilty by a Rotorua District Court jury of exploiting a young person with a significant impairment by sexual connection in June 2015, was sentenced yesterday. Judge Phillip Cooper rejected a claim from Stickings’ lawyer Laura Owen, that he was remorseful, saying if he had been he’d have pleaded guilty, saving the teen the trauma of giving evidence. The judge noted the birth of Stickings’ child had a very significant impact on his victim with the mental capacity of a seven-
year-old who had no idea what happened to her or how babies were made. “Your friendship with the girl morphed into a sinister sexual relationship ... it had a whiff of predatory sexual behaviour about it . . . you had unprotected sex with her making her pregnant, that is the stand-out feature of this case, from what you told the pre-sentence report writer you don’t appear to understand the effect of your actions on the complainant and her whanau,” Judge Cooper told Stickings. He accepted Stickings had shown the girl some kindness by organising for her to have a skin condition attended to. Ms Owen said Stickings hadn’t set out to molest the impaired girl and also claimed he was keen to get to know the baby. – NZN

Eruption kills, injures skiers One man is dead and at least 16 people injured, some critically, when rocks from an erupting volcano rained down on skiers at a mountain resort in central Japan A Japanese soldier injured on the ski slopes died, Jiji Press reported, citing Japan’s Defence Ministry. Nine civilians were injured by volcanic rocks, while seven people – six soldiers and one civilian skier – were hit by an avalanche, according to fire department and defence officials. Kusatsu-Shirane, a 2160 metre volcano, erupted on Tuesday morning, the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. The agency warned that further eruptions could not be ruled out and that rocks could

buried by an avalanche about half an hour after the eruption, but they and the seventh skier had all been pulled out of the snow.
Video footage from the top of the resort’s gondola showed skiers gliding down the slopes as black rocks plummeted from the skies and snow billowed up as they struck the ground, sometimes just missing skiers. A cloud of black smoke later drifted in. “There was this huge boom, and a big plume of totally black smoke rose up,” one skier told NHK. “I had absolutely no idea what had happened.” The resort temporarily lost power, leaving a number of skiers suspended in gondolas for around half an hour until they resumed moving. Aerial photographs showed a large swath of the snowy volcano covered by dark grey ash. - DAP

Twin Benghazi car bombs kill at least 27 Twin car bombs exploded as people left a mosque in a residential area of the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, killing 27 and wounding over 30 in an attack timed to cause mass casualties among first responders, officials said. Captain Tarek Alkharraz, spokesman for military and police forces in Benghazi, said the first explosion went off in the Salmani neighborhood in the early evening and the
second bomb went off as residents and medics gathered to evacuate the wounded. Local health official Hani Belras Ali said at least 27 people had died so far and 32 were wounded. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombings. The United Nations condemned the attack on social media, saying that direct or indiscriminate attacks on ci-
vilians are prohibited under international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes. Libya fell into chaos following the ouster and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, and since 2014 it has been split between rival governments and parliaments based in the western and eastern regions, each backed by different militias and tribes. Drug study offers hope for multiple sclerosis sufferers Australian researchers are about to begin a large-scale test of a drug that could thwart the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS). Monash University researchers believe a small molecule may help protect nerve fibres in the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, and could even aid their repair. It’s hoped the molecule could one day help patients with Secondary Progressive MS, a stage when the disease steadily worsens and can cause muscular spasms and problems with co-ordination, weakness and limb function. MS occurs when the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues. In the case of MS, this immune system malfunction destroys myelin – the fatty substance that coats and protects nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord. Eventually, the disease can
Dr Steven Petratos cause the nerves themselves to deteriorate or become permanently damaged. But Monash University neuroscientist Dr Steven Petratos believes the molecule – Diiodothyropropionic acid – could prove a game-changer for MS sufferers. He says existing drugs can moderate the disease and treat inflammation associated with it, but they don’t address
the degenerative aspect of MS. “It has the advantage of being able to cross the bloodbrain barrier to target affected cells in the brain, a limitation of existing treatment,” Dr Petratos says. “The drug that we’ve identified may have a significant benefit in changing the course of MS progression primarily from the aspect of protection of the central nervous system, as well as enhancing repair.” The study will test for possible side effects of the drug and any toxic outcomes. As for its potential for repair, the drug will need to be tested longterm because nerve repair would take years. The molecule has been patented and researchers are already negotiating with a potential commercial partner to further develop and test the drug in clinical trials. – AAP

Lawyer shot dead outside Sydney cafe Forensics officers worked through Tuesday night following a brazen daylight shooting in Sydney’s southwest where a prominent local lawyer was gunned down at a table outside a cafe. Sixty-five-year-old Vietnamese criminal lawyer Ho Ledinh was shot three times through the back at point-blank range outside the Happy Cup cafe at Bankstown City Plaza on Tuesday afternoon. NSW Police believe the attack was targeted. His attacker, who was wearing a hi-vis vest and a long green coat, according to video footage, remains on the run and police have been interviewing witnesses and scouring CCTV to try and track him. Parts of the busy shopping strip remained cordoned off yesterday morning. Hours before the shooting, Ledinh, 65 was seen having coffee with a friend. – AAP
Skaria under investigation
Pop music star Shakira is under investigation in Spain for possible tax evasion during the three years before she officially moved to Barcelona, Spanish authorities said. Shakira switched residences in 2015 from the Bahamas to Barcelona, where she lives with her partner, Gerard Pique, and the couple’s two sons. Spanish tax authorities suspect the Colombian singer already lived in the northeast city between 2012 and 2014, when she allegedly failed to pay income taxes in Spain. Prosecutor Jose Miguel Company said the tax authorities referred the probe to the Barcelona prosecutor’s office in December.

Burn-offs – a burning issue for many Matt Markham

rowing up in Mid Canterbury it always used to be a fascinating sight at this time of the year to see farmers begin burning off their paddocks. Watching huge plumes of smoke billow their way up into the, often, bright blue sky was a majestic sight and also a sign that you were a part of a thriving rural stronghold. For many years it was never an issue. On the odd occasion the wind might have got up and caused a bit of havoc or one might have spread a bit further than expected. But mostly it’s been a perfect co-existence between town and rural. Now, not so much. True to form, as it has been for the past few years, the prospect or sight of smoke flowing freely into the sky has seen a few get their noses out of joint – and not just because of the smell. Yet farmers have every right to burn off a paddock. Whether those who live in towns like it or not. Not only is it legal with the correct permits, but it is also the most effective way for them to clear a paddock for the next year’s use. By burning a paddock, a farmer is getting maximum results for maximising his soil and seed bed quality, sustaining weed management, minimising fuel use and cultivation intensity, enhancing farm productivity and reducing pests and diseases within crops. This puts the chosen option ahead of the others available; inversion cultivation, ploughing, baling and removing cut straw and direct drilling. So, it just makes sense. For one month a year we see the smoke and for one month a year we ponder if it will eventuate into something more sinister than what it is. As long as our farmers are respectful of the conditions and the rules and regulations around burning off paddocks, then what’s the problem here? I could have told anyone who lives in town and who doesn’t like it to move away from a rural area, but that’s hardly a fair argument. For the betterment of our district’s impact on the economy from the rural sector, it’s surely a sacrifice we can all make.
YOUR VIEWS ON FACEBOOK Question of the day: The annual burn-off debate has already reared its head for the year. What are your thoughts on farmers being able to burn off paddocks? Sally farmers have been burning off for hundreds of years but for some it is suddenly a problem. Ashburton exists because of farmers and it sad to think we can’t put up with 2 or 3 weeks of burning Matt All for it. Its the quickest most efficiently way to do the job and no extra chemicals getting poured on our food. Chris New Zealand has a clean green image, glacier feed rivers, majestic mountain view, a place in the world to be envied and then there is the huge plumes of black smoke which sometimes blocks out the sun, drifts through towns and village’s leaving a smell of smoke. Industry has to have a Ecan permit to discharge contaminant to air, does the farmer have that. Wonton pollution of our air. Nick Better for the ground then chemicals. Crazy idea but if u dont like it dont live in a farming community Duncan Should be bigger focus on penalising those that don’t follow correct procedures when burning, eg too windy, at night, or trying to burn stubble that’s too wet. Farmers that burn in correct conditions cause no problem,
it’s the cowboys (most often the same ones) that cause the worst problems like lingering smoke & callouts to fire service. Burning is the best form of organic weed & pest control there is. Personally we’re fully committed to minimum tillage, but for others it’s an essential tool. Hęnry There are so many benefits from burning farmers put less chemicals on and use less diesel to prepare paddocks for the next crop but the big one is making the area fire safe cause we all saw what happened on Christmas Day at Hororata it would be 100 times bigger if something like that were to happen now with most crops ready for harvest now. Shirley The whole town stinks of smoke washing covered in soot anf black birnrt grass particles coat everything in sight.its been s prob for years not just the last 3 or 4 . Maybe there are more of them now with changes within the farming industry. The smoke is far denser than house fires. Cheryl Necessary to deal with crop residue. We live in a rural town, servicing farming so we should support farmers who supply us with our living. Take the farmers away and this town would have
no reason to exist. Melissa If they don’t do what they have to do than they will be behind for the whole next season, they have to get their crops planted on time. Tina Too risky. They have loads of farm machinery surely they can either use it as fertiliser or burn the refuse in a drum or something or dump it Shannae Yup I’m all for it just hate the smoke that goes through the town but it only lasts a couple weeks out if the year and it’s better then chemicals etc. Jeremy Burn offs don’t linger for long farmers bale straw for food sell it keep it minor amount of stubble left to burn start the cycle over go for it i say Philippa Nothing wrong with a burn off. We live in a rural town if you don’t like it move. Judy Why has burning off only been an issue in the last 3 or 4yrs?, it was never a problem a few years ago. I can’t see a problem if it’s done in the evening, would much rather that than chemicals!!!! Liz rather have a burn off that is done right, than a whole heap of spray.

Spotlight on mental health By Kate HawKesBy
I
t’s pleasing to see mental health back in the spotlight. Pleasing because, like it or not, we’re all going to be affected by it at some stage of our lives. The stats tell us half of all New Zealanders will experience a mental health diagnosis in their lifetime – and even if you don’t have direct contact with a diagnosis, you can bet there will be a bucketload of people who are suffering around you, who remain undiagnosed. The stats also tell us that demand for mental health services has increased by 71 per cent over the past decade. I guess we can point to the obvious factors here: family violence, anxiety, addiction, unemployment – but if there’s a positive to that statistic, it’s that more people are prepared to ask for help. Destigmatising mental health is an enormous and ongoing challenge for this country, and though it feels like we’re making inroads in this area, we still have a long way to go.
One of the keys to that is recognising it can strike anyone. Mental illness does not discern between rich and poor, happy or sad, well or unwell. Alongside debunking mental health, of course, is providing access, getting services to people early, looking to plug the gaps. Who’s missing out and why? For those who are seeking help, what’s the quality of the services being provided? In my own experience of these services within my own family, the quality of the service is paramount. It has to be good. It has to be informed, professional and helpful. Staff training must be meticulously thought through. It is not enough to just throw around the words ‘access’ and ‘services’ without making sure they’re up to scratch. Nothing is more demoralising in a mental health situation than a service which is only going to make matters worse. Attitude is another issue, of course, our ‘she’ll be right’ approach – or worse, our refusal to accept reality or our home-
grown diagnosis that someone’s ‘just a bit down’. What’s of big interest to me, in particular, is our young people. Anxiety is at record levels according to those at the coalface. Even very young school children are being diagnosed with anxiety these days. How much weight are these anxious younger generations going to put on our already stretched health services in the future? We seem very adept these days at talking about wellbeing. It is the age of meditation and mindfulness after all. We can recount the benefits of fresh air and a brisk walk, a few deep breaths and learning to relax – but do we actually do it? Do we role model it for our kids? What’s our role in all of this and are we playing our part? It will take more than a government inquiry to address the very real mental health problems in our communities and our families, our schools and our workplaces. So as much as I’m not a fan of inquiries, which can de-
scend into talk-fests and paper pushing with no real tangible outcomes, it is encouraging that the Government aims to look at the broadest terms of reference possible. Nothing should be off the table. The flip side of this of course is it’s time-consuming, the inquiry will involve submissions sought from around the country, it’ll need collating and filing and breaking up into digestible pieces. None of that will happen before October, so in all reality, nothing will happen tangibly before next year. Even then, it will take time. It will be costly. But worth it, because the cost of doing nothing is greater. – NZME Kate Hawkesby is the host of Early Edition on Newstalk ZB. Record temps bring challenges Hot, dry weather is putting the pressure on farmers this summer, with livestock susceptible to the conditions. The extreme temperatures across the country include the hottest recorded temperatures in Dunedin and Invercargill last week. The increased heat and humidity raises issues of not only the welfare of livestock, but also production from those animals, AgResearch scientists say. Fortunately, extensive research over the past 15 years at AgResearch into dairy cows, and how they cope with the heat, has provided important insights for animal management, senior scientist Dr Karin Schütz said. “Like many mammals, dairy cows are more sensitive to heat than they are to cold,” Schütz said. “A large animal like a lactating cow generates a lot of metabolic heat and while it will increase its respiratory rate and sweat like a human being, it can struggle in especially warm conditions to lose the heat. “When you see the animal starting to drool and open-mouth panting, it’s a sign it is in distress from the heat.” Schütz said the cows will change their behaviour to cope in the warm conditions, including drinking more, eating less, seeking out “micro-climates” in the shade or close to water, and orienting themselves differently from the sun. “They also don’t lie down as much, which may be to increase the airflow around their bodies.” Research showed that when the air temperature reached 21°C and humidity more than 75 per cent, it could affect the cow’s behaviour and milk production could decline, Schütz said. “If you want to keep up pro-
duction, you need to keep your animals cool. That can mean providing shelter (such as trees), increasing access to drinking water, reducing walking distances and preventing stress. If it is really hot, a lot of farmers will use sprinklers at their milking sheds to cool the cows as they wait to be milked. “Given a choice, however, we have found the cows will seek shade over the sprinklers and from our research we know the cows can tell the difference between different degrees of shade and will choose shade that protects them more from solar radiation.” DairyNZ animal husbandry team leader Helen Thoday said proactive prevention of heat stress is more cost-effective than trying to manage the consequences once cows become heat stressed. “All activity will increase the risk of heat stress, including walking to the water trough, to and from the dairy shed, and even grazing as normal,” Thoday said. “When hot conditions are forecast, some short-term solutions to reduce heat stress are to graze cows close to the dairy shed to reduce walking distance for milking, and to milk later in the afternoon/early evening when the temperature has dropped.” Farmers can also provide supplementary feed at night, so extra heat generated by digestion occurs at the coolest time. DairyNZ has a temperature humidity index calculator on its website to help manage heat stress in cows. With adequate drinking water also being key, AgResearch is planning to look into the effect of quality of drinking water provided and the effect on production in further research.

Saleyards’ paddocks cleared for crop By Colin WillisCroft
Colin.w@theguardian.Co.nz
What were once holding paddocks for the former Tinwald saleyards have been put to good use in recent months as part of a fundraiser for the Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club. The fences were removed from the paddocks last winter to allow the 8.5 hectares to be planted in barley, which was recently harvested to raise money for the
club. President John Hall said as far as he was aware there had never been a crop planted in the paddocks before, given their long connection with the saleyards, which were a Tinwald institution for more than 150 years. Hall said landowner Greg Donaldson had donated the use of the land to the club for a couple of years, for which he was extremely grateful. Other supporters of the project included
Michael Ellis, who looked after the spraying, Mike Cairns, for the spreading, Ravensdown for the fertiliser, Greg Carr for the harvest and Evans Stockfood, which bought the crop once it was harvested. Extremes of firstly wet and then warm, dry weather in the later part of last year made for a challenging growing season, Hall said, and he was hopeful for a better season next year.

Hats off to the Mackenzies A
pat on the back to Methven farmer Craige Mackenzie. Deciding to talk openly with me this week about what it was like to come under scrutiny for mycoplasma bovis was a brave move and I applaud him for it. Although, and let’s be very clear about this, his property tested clear for the disease, being prepared to stick his head above the parapet and talk about the experience was a gutsy move. I say that for a couple of reasons. Firstly, there will be those who say where there’s smoke there’s fire, despite the evidence in front of officials saying that’s not the case. So he’s likely to become the subject of a fair bit of gossip, much of it unpleasant. Secondly, Craige’s a bit of a tall poppy in a country that seems to take pride in hacking them down, so it would have been much easier for him to say ‘thanks but no thanks’ when I approached him the other day with the idea of talking about what it was like to come under scrutiny for the disease. I didn’t know for sure that was the case, I’d just heard a rumour or two. But I thought if he had, sharing the experience might provide a more human side to what’s been going on in the farming community and some of the pressures that those caught up in the situation have had to deal with.
Colin Williscroft
I even offered to leave his name out of it, breaking one of the first rules of journalism. To be honest, I thought he’d say no, and I was even more surprised when he said I could name him. I can see his logic. He did nothing wrong and has nothing to hide. He’d also already told his neighbours of the situation, so the news wasn’t a secret. But he didn’t have to. If I’d been in his shoes I’m not sure that I’d have that sort of courage. However, for Craige, talking about the experience is for the good of the industry overall. And if the industry is going to move forward then transparency is required, which for him has to start at home. So well done Craige. The industry and community needs more like you. ■ BEEF + LAMB
Red meat exports set new record Red meat export receipts reached a record high for the December quarter of the 201718 season, according to an analysis by Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s (B+LNZ) Economic Service. The record was driven by high export volumes and average Free-on-Board (FOB) per tonne at record values for lamb and mutton, and near record values for beef, while the New Zealand dollar (NZD) has remained relatively strong. Andrew Burtt, B+LNZ chief economist, said lamb and mutton farm-gate prices were up 30 per cent and 59 per cent respectively for the first quarter of the season (October-December 2017) compared to the previous season. Cattle prices were relatively steady – up 5 per cent. “Average value per tonne for exports started at a high level after strong growth during the 2016-17 season and have remained strong despite higher processing volumes so far in 2017-18. “Dry conditions led to an increase in New Zealand sheepmeat, cow and bull production over the first quarter compared with the same quarter in 2016-17, but similar to production in 2015-16. “The 2016-17 season started slowly due to generally wetter and cooler weather and livestock were harder to finish, but good pasture availability reduced pressure on farmers to sell.” While production was high in the first quarter of the 2017-18 season, in its 201718 New Season Outlook, B+LNZ’s Eco-
Andrew Burtt nomic Service forecast that lamb and beef production would be about the same as in 2016-17, but mutton production would be down 9.1 per cent, he said. The economic service will review its farm-gate price forecasts in the 2017-18 Mid-Season Update report to be published in March.

Michael Hill winds up US operations Michael Hill International, the jewellery chain founded by its namesake, will wind up its US operations after a decade-long investment failed to build a profitable business, and is overhauling its Emma & Roe jewellery line. The Brisbane-based company said it expects the changes to improve profitability with a stronger investment focus on those areas where it’s getting the best return. The retailer will close its nine US stores, which haven’t generated enough traction to warrant greater investment, and shift the Emma & Roe product range into demi-fine jewellery with more sales online and a smaller store footprint. Michael Hill will write down the Emma & Roe assets by about $A7 million but hasn’t figured out the financial impact of the US exit yet. “These actions strengthen the foundations of Michael Hill International as we aim to improve the operating performance of our group assets by refocusing capital and resources to those parts of the business delivering the highest returns and potential for growth,” chief executive Phil Taylor said in a statement. “We see these actions, along with an increased investment
on improving the group’s digital capabilities and e-commerce platform, as being the key pillars to driving ongoing sustainable business growth and attracting customers in new and engaging ways.” Michael Hill launched the Emma & Roe brand in 2014, which

First NZ Capital says it’s plausible Z Energy’s downgraded guidance is due to one-off factors and maintained its dividend expectations for the stock, but has trimmed its target price for the stock. On Wednesday Z cut its annual guidance by about $20 million following a weaker-than-expected performance in the December quarter, due to a shutdown of the New Zealand Refining fuel pipeline to Auckland and the rising price of crude oil. The company said replacement cost operating earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation and fair value adjustments (ebitdaf) will be between $430 million and $455 million in the year to March 31, down from a previous range of $445 million-to-$475 million. In a research report for clients, FNZC yesterday downgraded its
target price to $7.70 from $7.79, revised its 2018 ebitdaf forecast to $443 million from $464 million, and maintained its ‘neutral’ rating on the stock. It kept its full-year dividend expectations unchanged at 32.3 cents per share, as it said near-term cash flow and net debt should benefit from the rising price of crude. “Further supply disruptions and rate of crude cost increase led to guidance downgrade, but both factors look unlikely to reoccur in FY19,” FNZC analyst Nevill Gluyas said. FNZC’s outlook for Z is gloomier than the general consensus, with six analyst recommendations compiled by Reuters holding an average ‘buy recommendation’ with a median target price of $8.40. Wednesday’s third-quarter data showed retail petrol sales from both Z and Caltex sites fell 4.7 per
cent to 307 million litres, which FZNC said was 5 per cent lower than its forecast of 322 million litres, though Z has attributed the decline to Commerce Commission-mandated station divestment last year. Retail diesel sales, at 120 million litres, were up 2 per cent from FNZC’s prediction. FNZC said top-of-cycle fuel margins and likely regulatory review create downside risk, but robust near-term earnings and an attractive dividend yield support Z trading near the upper end of its valuation range “unless (or until) the medium-term risks become more concrete.” Z stock last traded at $7.52, virtually unchanged from this time a year ago when was trading at $7.50. The stock climbed as high as $8.04 in late 2017 but has dropped back, and fell 2.3 per cent yesterday on the downgrade news. – NZME

Riley to take helm of Vista Group Int Kimbal Riley will take over as Vista Group International chief executive from April 3, replacing Murray Holdaway, who will become chief product officer. Riley joined the cinema software firm four years ago and has been chief executive of Vista Entertainment Solutions, the unit responsible for the largest portion of the group’s revenue. Under his leadership VES has grown its global footprint by an additional 20 markets, extending its reach to more than 80 countries. Vista said the reshuffle was part of succession planning and aimed to provide a “seamless transition” for the business. Outgoing chief executive Hold-
away co-founded Vista Group in 1996 and “his strengths continue to lie in product innovation and customer service and with the diversification of Vista since our 2014 listing, we want him to focus in the area where he has traditionally provided the greatest value, which is product innovation,” chair Kirk Senior said in a statement. Holdaway will also retain his role as executive director on the Vista Group board. The company’s first-half net profit lifted 34 per cent to $3.6 million in the six months to June 30 on the back of its international expansion. At the time, it forecast full-year revenue growth of more than 20 per cent.
The company’s eight different units provide cinema management, film and customer analytics software for the global film industry. It estimates more than 1 billion cinema tickets are processed every year through Vista Cinema. It has more than 600 staff in New Zealand, Australia, the USA, the UK, South Africa, Latin America, the Netherlands and China. The stock last traded at $2.99 and has lifted 11 per cent over the past 12 months. It listed in 2014, selling shares in an initial public offering at $2.35. Last November it announced a two-for-one share split to increase liquidity when the stock was trading at around $5.35. – NZME

Ashburton Bowling Club The Ladies Champion Triples have been completed and won by Diane Gutberlet, Ollie Collins and Alison Gibbs. R/up Wendy Suttie, Noeline MacKenzie and Leonie Spargo. Congratulations ladies as it was played on a very hot day. Played at Hinds in the Maddison January 20 1st went to Alastair MacKenzie, Doug Kinvig, Noeline MacKenzie and Leonie Spargo, and 3rd place to Graham Taylor, Roger Herriott, Russell Anstiss and Harold Kemp. Thursday evening at 5.30pm the Murray Gray sponsored by Pearsons Bus Co, will be played. Dress code is mufti and names on board or to GT ASAP. The Aussie Pairs cancelled because of weather will now be played Wednesday February 28. There are still vacancies if you wish to enter. Men’s 3 3’s will begin this Saturday January 28. Congratulations to those who played in the reps, Heather Goodall, Noeline Woods, Murray Anderson, Brentton Donaldson, Colin Arnst, Doug Kinvig and Gordon Sparks. Well done to you all. Ashburton Dahlia Circle The first Dahlia meeting of the New Year will be held on Tuesday January 30 at 7.30pm. The Hall will be open at 6.30pm to set up the room for the 1st table show of the Season. Members, especially all the newcomers, are encouraged to bring along blooms for the different classes. Experienced members will be on hand to help identify flowers and the points of staging the flowers. Flowers can be tabled at 7.00pm and the doors will be open for any interested public who would like to come and view or maybe, join the enthusiastic group of Dahlia growers. A helpful tip for your Dahlias to survive this summer heat & lack of water – On the very hot days, be proactive, and cut off blooms that are fully opened or past their best. Flowers are 80 percent water and make a big drain on the survival of the plant. While a simple disbudding of the top two side buds will put energy into one stronger bloom. A liquid potash spray over the whole plant in the cooler evening of the day, will help their strength and tuber development. It is surprising how quickly the plants ‘come back’, with better flowers. Enjoy. Contacts – Secretary Alison 3085657, or Publicity Joyce 3083294
Ashburton Golf Club Hope everyone had a good weekend, Sharon and myself were down in Queenstown for the Gibston Valley Concert, was a bit warm there for an old Yorkshire couple. This Saturday, Matt is running one of his Pro Shop days, these are always good fun, I believe we are playing a Stableford round with a twist. There will be some great prizes to play for, come on down and support Matt, he does a hell of a lot of work and is a superb asset to the club. Notes for your diary, on February 10 we will be holding the inaugural Brandon Open, which will be a 36 hole stroke game, open to everyone, with gross and nett prizes in grades. Normal game of the day will go on for those not fancying 36 holes. Morning and afternoon times will be the same, with the 36rs playing in both groups. This is something we have talked about for a few years, so we are going to give it a go and see if it takes off. Put the word around, it is an open, so other club players more than welcome. Then on the weekend February 24 and 25 we have our wonderful Harvey Norman Classic, which has been going from strength to strength over the last few years. Get your entry forms in, there will be a sheet going up

Our first meeting of the year was held in the Doris Linton Lounge at the RSA on Monday January 22. Vera welcomed everyone. There were no visitors and nobody was confessing to have had birthdays or anniversaries over the break. We all stood in silence to remember Ruth Kinvig who recently passed away. The business of the meeting was conducted with a special plea for people to come on the committee and also we need a new President and Vice president for the coming year. Serious consideration must be given
his chosen field of education. His career spanning 42 years saw him moving from specialised establishments, smaller schools, to principal positions, the last being at Ashburton Borough School for 23 years. During this time he has been the force behind the establishment of many innovative projects that demonstrate how delivery of education is changing and evolving. Sam is wished well for his intended retirement. A quiz for members participation on the life and times of Burns caused debate around many tables. The evening’s programme concluded with a selection of Scottish songs led by solosists Lions Derek, Peter, Les and Jim.
or the Club may fold. The treasurer reported that all was well in the finance department and that our bank account had been changed. Margaret Esson was then welcomed as a new member to our club and presented with her copy of the constitution. Our Mini speaker was Faye Ruddenklau who, with her husband, had recently been on holiday with her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren to Kauai - an island which is part of the Hawaiian archipelago. It is nicknamed “the Garden Isle” thanks to the tropical rainforest covering much of its surface. The dramatic cliffs and ragged landscape have served as a backdrop for some major Hollywood films including: South Pacific, Indiana Jones Jurassic Park and The Pirates of the Caribbean. It has Waimea Canyon 22kms long, 1.6m wide and 1100 metres deep and is a well-known hiking destination and is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. They returned home after a very relaxing and pleasant family holiday. Before morning rea we were advised of Age Concern Ashburton’s Positive Aging Expo which will be held at the Racecourse on March 8 and also invited to contribute support for the Relay for Life which is on February 24 and 25. The raffles were won by Jean Wright and Audrey Lowe. Our main speaker was Julie Srhoy from Real Estate New Zealand who discussed various options available to us at our stage of life. What things needed to be considered as we reach the stage of needing to downsize – whether we are moving from farms to lifestyle blocks or lifestyle blocks to town houses or even from larger homes to smaller ones. It can be a difficult time for some people. She had lots of advice and suggestions on what to consider and how to proceed. She showed us a fascinating new 3D viewing tool which is available to see what a property looks like inside and out before you even go on the site.
The focus for Pakeke Lions during February will be finalising plans for the Monster Charity Garage Sale to be held on March 3 at the Ashburton Racecourse. All proceeds will go to local Charities. This year will see some changes to the format with Craft stalls and children’s entertainment being introduced. A mail drop over the next few days will be advising the community of the event and requesting donations of household, garden and workshop items. There may even be surplus fruit or vegetables around this year. Items can be collected by Pakeke members from February 28. The evening closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
She was thanked for her informative talk by Wilma Breading who presented Julie with a fruit bowl. Members were reminded that our next meeting is on February 26.
The Lions Club of Ashburton The club’s November meeting was a well-attended event held at the Ashburton Aviation Museum. Organised by Phil Kerr and Colin Morgan, the catered meal was most enjoyable as was the evening as a whole. A quiz night was the feature of the December meeting run by Colin Morgan. Held at the Hotel Ashburton, the meal and fellowship were enjoyed by the members attending. The club’s Food Trailer is now up and running. It has been used at the Truck Show and already hired for private use. Whilst for Club and Community use, any group or individual can approach the Club for private hire details. The Book launch of John ‘Bigsy’ McLay’s book In The Zone, was a great evening and attended by many club members. Hosted by Jock Ross at the Hotel Ashburton, other All Blacks attending included Grizz Wylie, Tane Norton, Billy Bush, Stan (Tiny) Hill, Richie McCaw and Grant Perry. This was all testimony to Bigsy’s standing in our club and community. Bigsy’s subsequent passing away was a sad ending to a life fully led. His funeral was well attended and the club’s sympathy is extended to Faith and family. Forthcoming events include the social function at Michael and Sheila Shearer’s property on Sunday January 28. Details have been circulated. This includes a Car Rally ending up at Michael and Sheila’s. Our first meeting for 2018 is Wednesday February 7 at Hotel Ashburton. This will be a tea meeting. The South Island Motor Home and Extravaganza 2018 will be held on the weekend February 17 & 18. This is the first time this event will be run under the auspices of the Lions Club of Ashburton and is eagerly anticipated.

In brief Aussies go 3x3 Basketball Australia have begun preparations to compete in three-on-three basketball at the 2020 Olympics after unveiling a 3x3 Hustle tournament to be played in April. The FIBAsanctioned Pro Hustle will be fought between 16 teams made up of eight professional outfits and eight from the Big Hustle – a state-based championship in the lead-up. With the NBL season set to finish in March, NBL players are eligible to play however it is unclear how many of the eight current league teams will compete in the event. BA chairman Ned Coten says the development is a huge step for Australian sport, seven months after the concept was formally included for the Tokyo games. “The 3x3 Hustle is a unique opportunity to bring to life a game that all Australians can play and enjoy from street level to the elite level,” Coten said. - AAP

Off to a flying start in 2018 After a good Christmas break, it was a case of straight back into it for the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim team early in the new year. But the hard yards put in by the crew have netted some positive results already for the year and leave the squad in a good place to push further into the season. Last week a team of eight swimmers ventured down south to Dunedin to compete in the
Canterbury Championships, which were held in conjunction with the Otago Championships. Ashburton swimmers brought home medals in two age groups including a five-gold medal haul for Bree Middleton. The Mt Hutt College student won gold in the 50, 200, 400 and 800 metre freestyle and also the 50-metre butterfly while she picked up silver in the 100 metre freestyle and 100 metre butterfly as well as a bronze medal
in the 200 metre individual medley. Middleton also claimed the 400 metre freestyle fastest female cup and the 800 metre freestyle Jubilee Cup. Bailey Tait was also in the medals gaining silvers in both the 200 metre backstroke and 400 metre freestyle. All eight swimmers were able to make their way into the finals at night which made for exciting times for the squad.
Others to perform well included Blake Farr who set some impressive personal bests including taking more than 14 seconds off his previous best time in the 400 metre freestyle. Coach Shane Jones was rapt with all the results. This weekend it is the turn of the junior squad when they compete on home water in the Canterbury Championships for 12-years and under at the EA Networks Centre in Ashburton.

Cassidy climbs into professional ranks Leading New Zealand and Waikato amateur, Chantelle Cassidy has announced her step into the professional golf ranks yesterday after a spectacular amateur career. Cassidy has been one of the country’s most consistent amateurs over the past decade and has achieved more than most at this level which will give her confidence as she starts a new chapter in her career. Over this time span Cassidy has engraved her name on the New Zealand Amateur title in 2014 and the New Zealand Stroke Play title in 2013 and 2016. With this, she has a handful of Jennian Homes Charles Tour titles including a Muriwai Open, Lawnmaster Classic, Carrus Open and three Harewood Opens.
Chantelle Cassidy steps up into the professional golf ranks. At the age of 25 this leap to the next level has been coming for some time and she is, much like the whole golfing community,
excited to see where her career can go. “Its been an awesome journey so far, but I think I am ready to
turn professional and see how I go,” said Cassidy. After getting agonisingly close to earning her Ladies European Tour Card where she just missed the final qualifying cut, she has accepted status on the LET Access Series, which acts as a pathway to the Ladies European Tour. In the meantime, she will take the opportunity to compete in Australia over the summer months playing the ALPG series of events. “Im really excited and cant wait to play on the ALPG soon and I must thank everyone who has been involved in my career as an amateur.” Cassidy has left the World Amateur Golf Rankings as the top Kiwi woman ranked 66th. - NZME

In brief Lynn confident Chris Lynn admits the calf injury that kept him out of Australia’s current one-day series with England may have actually been a good thing. The Brisbane Heat big-hitter played his first innings since his latest injury in a practice match yesterday, blasting 37 from just 22 balls. Already on the comeback from shoulder surgery, Lynn said the minor setback had given him the extra few weeks he needed to be ready for a return to the green and gold in a Twenty20 international on February 3. - AAP
Kennewell’s cruel blow Highly-rated Australian forward Simon Kennewell has suffered a cruel injury blow on the eve of the Sydney 7s that will also keep him out of this year’s Commonwealth Games and World Cup. The 21-year-old ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament at training on Tuesday and will undergo surgery, ruling him out of the rest of the season’s World Series. Kennewell was earmarked by USA coach Mike Friday as one to watch ahead of the teams’ Australia Day battle on Friday. - AAP Budding cricketers enjoyed good weather at a Mid Canterbury Cricket holiday programme yesterday.

Fine tuning cricketing skills By Matt MarkhaM
Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz
It’s cricket coaching, but the emphasis is on fun. More than a dozen children have taken up the opportunity to fine tune their cricketing skills this week as a part of a holiday programme run by Mid Canterbury Cricket. The three-day course, which has run from 9am to 3pm on
Tuesday and also yesterday, finishes up today after what coach Garfield Charles describes as a “good, fun few days”. “It’s been really enjoyable,” Charles said. “We’ve had a great bunch of kids along who are all keen to learn more and we’ve hopefully taught them a thing or two as well. “But the main focus of this
was to just have fun and I think we’ve achieved the goal as well.” Charles said the 15 children who had taken part in the programme was a good base of kids, but he was expecting a few more. “It could always be better, especially with the weather that we have had. “The problem is that if we have too many and it rains, we
can’t go inside because we are only allowed a set number inside the building. “But it has been a good number of kids – they’re not rep players or anything like that so we’ve been able to work on the basics.” Today’s final day will be wrapped up with a prizegiving with a few awards to be dished out for performances during the week.
■ SAILING
Luna Rossa hire Vasco Vascotto as tactician America’s Cup challenger Luna Rossa have signed 25-time world champion Vasco Vascotto as their tactician. The 48-year-old has 15 European and 25 Italian titles to his name, while his world title haul is believed to be a record. Vascotto has been involved in previous America’s Cups, sailing with Italian challenger Mascalzone Latino, winning 10 of their 20 round robin races to finish sixth among the 11 challengers in 2007. Vascotto’s signing came after Luna Rossa confirmed a $109m sponsorship from Prada in their bid to finally win the Aulg Mug in 2021. The 36th America’s Cup, which will be sailed in Auckland, will switch to monohulls playing into the hands of the afterguard specialist. However, Vascotto has had little regard for foiling who said
Vasco Vascotto “foiling did not belong to his culture”. “I don’t even like to fly in an airplane. I love to sail with my
ass near the sea,” he told DRSails last year. Though that may all change, as Team New Zealand’s decision
to return to monohulls comes with their bold design to lift the 75-foot boats out of the water. An admirer of the sailing skills of Team New Zealand’s Ray Davies and Terry Hutchinson, Vascotto said he now preferred to work as a tactician, rather than behind the wheel. “Being tactician allows you to be aware and try to keep more key-factors under control: the wind, the fleet, the manoeuvres and everything ... a helmsman should only think about boat speed,” he said. Vascotto comes on board as Luna Rossa set to contest the 2018 TP52 Super Series, were they will also trial 40 young Italian sailors. Britain’s Ben Ainslie Racing and the New York Yacht Club will also use the TP52 Super Series to hone their skills for the America’s Cup. - NZME
Williams weighs in All-time great Serena Williams has given the thumbs down to compatriot Tennys Sandgren as the unheralded American attempts to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open. “Turns channel,” the 23-time major winner tweeted as Sandgren took the court in his quarter-final with fellow outsider Hyeon Chung. The missive is being widely read as a reference to Sandgren’s support for the politics of US President Donald Trump. Sandgren’s run to the last eight at the Open has brought to light his support for Trump and interest in nationalist and alt-right politics. - AAP
Set to bounce back A-League ladder leaders Sydney FC expect to bounce back from their recent lacklustre performances after overcoming a bout of gastro. The all-conquering Sky Blues on Friday face archrivals Melbourne Victory during their most vulnerable time of the season, having dropped six points in their past four matches. “Everyone is healthy, everyone is fit this week so it will be a different performance,” captain Alex Brosque told reporters. - AAP
No surprises There’s just one objective for the overseer of New Zealand’s 2018 Winter Olympic Games tilt before next month’s Pyeongchang action. Absolutely no surprises. Kiwi Chef de Mission Pete Wardell, at the helm of his third Winter Olympics, will jet off to Korea today to settle his team’s pre-Games arrangements. The athletes – at least 20 of them – will arrive in early February, and Wardell insists all the comforts of home will await them. It’s the best way for them to secure success on the ice. “There’s a lot of behindthe-scenes (stuff) going on in terms of all the uniforms, entries and preparation of the village, so that when the athletes arrive, they’ll get there and go, wow, fantastic,” Wardell said. - NZME

Wozniacki advanced with a rollercoaster 6-0 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 win over Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro on Rod Laver Arena in the early hours of Wednesday morning. - AAP
Curran called in
Kiss off ... frail Kiwi cyclist George Bennett after his great California tour win last year, but he’s no longer allowed to get this close to fans.
■ CYCLING
Bennett told to avoid fans Fans be warned – move away from that Kiwi cycling star. Road racer George Bennett has been ordered to stop shaking hands with fans, or getting too close to them, as he tries to shake free of the illnesses which are hurting his career. Bennett was laid low by glandular fever in 2016, and the disappointments last year included having to quit the Tour de France within coughing distance of becoming the first Kiwi to finish in the top 10. The 27-year-old Nelson rider, who races for LottoNL-Jumbo, told Radio Sport that he’s effectively been quarantined from fans. “It’s a million dollar question and we’ve just employed a couple
of new nutritionists ... maybe it is something to look at in terms of diet,” Bennett said, when asked how he planned to keep sickness at bay. “But the major thing is far less fan interaction. My team has criticised me a lot about that over the past few months. People come up to the bus, people want to shake your hand, people want autographs and that sort of stuff. “That’s really easy to get sick from doing that stuff. I have to get the distance interaction happening. “There are all sorts of things but definitely a no hand shaking policy has come in. “It’s so unnatural – you see a mate or someone comes all the way to Italy from New Zealand
and the first thing you want to do is shake their hand, ask them where they are from, how long they are there for. “I’ve basically had it drilled into me over the past few months to shut that down.” Bennett said it was “very strange” for a New Zealander to greet any compatriot with a health-conscious aloofness, whereas European riders “just see fans as fans”. “In New Zealand everyone is a mate, it will definitely be a strange thing to get used to,” he said. “I guess you also need an element of luck ... I’m sure your immune system has some effect if you are training too hard you are more prone. Did I get too skinny or unlucky?”
Bennett has just completed the Tour Downunder and lines up in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in Geelong on Sunday. He will spend most of February in New Zealand before returning to Europe and building up for the Giro D’Italia in May. That preparation will be based around altitude camps and using the fiveday Tour of the Alps as a “sharpener”. “I’ll live the real New Zealand life for a few weeks before I go back to Europe and get stuck into the season,” he said. “It’s far more important to see family and friends than doing pre-season camps or training, so I don’t spend nine or 10 months in Europe hanging out to get home.” - NZME
Young English cricketer Sam Curran has been called into England’s Twenty20 squad for next month’s trans-Tasman tri-series against Australia and New Zealand. The 19-year-old Surrey allrounder has just completed a Twenty20 Super Smash stint for Auckland, and will join the England squad in Perth later this week. England begin the tri-series with a match against Australia in Hobart on February 7. Curran, a left-arm seamer and middle-order batsman, played his first full season as a professional for Surrey last year, taking 65 wickets and scoring 717 runs. He will join older brother Tom, 22, who made his England debuts in all three formats in 2017. - NZN
Hart a late entry Two-time women’s champion Sophie Hart’s late entry has added some extra spice to next month’s Coast to Coast longest day multisport challenge. Hart, 34, last won the 243km run-cycle-kayak event from Kumara on the West Coast to New Brighton Beach at Christchurch in 2013. Her 2011 win, in a time of 12 hours 10 minutes, was only one minute outside the women’s individual record set by Christchurch’s Andrea Murray in 1997. - NZN
Kerber into semis Angelique Kerber has stamped her authority over the Australian Open women’s field, dismissing Madison Keys with breathless authority to march into the last four at Melbourne Park. Kerber, the sole champion remaining in the field, took just 51 minutes to beat the American 6-1 6-2 in their quarterfinal yesterday. - AAP
■ FOOTBALL
Manchester City through to League Cup final Manchester City ended secondtier Bristol City’s memorable run in the English League Cup by winning the second leg of their semi-final 3-2, advancing to next month’s final at Wembley Stadium 5-3 on aggregate. Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero scored in a seven-minute span around halftime to build on Man City’s 2-1 lead from the first leg two weeks ago. Marlon Pack reduced the deficit in the 64th minute and even though Aden Flint equalised in the fourth minute of stoppage time, there was no way Bristol City was about to add the Premier
League leaders to its list of topflight scalps that already included Manchester United, Watford, Stoke, and Crystal Palace in this campaign. Kevin De Bruyne scored with the last kick of the game to clinch victory on the night for the visitors. Still chasing trophies on four fronts and a first piece of silverware under Pep Guardiola, Man City will play either Chelsea or Arsenal in the final on February 26. They are tied at 0-0 from the first leg at Chelsea. Bristol City was attempting to become the first team since Shef-
field Wednesday in 1991 to win the League Cup from outside the top flight. Around 180 journalists, broadcasters, and photographers were at Ashton Gate, the club said, for a game being watched in more than 100 countries, putting the second-tier host in the global spotlight. Having needed a late goal from Aguero to earn a first-leg advantage, Man City paid its opponent a compliment by fielding close to a full-strength team for the return match despite being in the middle of a busy period of domestic fixtures. Bristol City bravely tried to press
Guardiola’s team all over the field, and was starting to frustrate the Premier League side when Sane struck in the 43rd minute. Hordur Magnusson tried to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick but Bernardo Silva battled to regain possession on the byline. He bundled the ball back to Sane, whose first-time shot with his right foot deflected into the net. Fresh off a hat-trick against Newcastle in the league at the weekend, Aguero put the match out of reach of Bristol City in the 50th with a clinical finish at the end of a counter-attack. De Bruyne was set free by Sane
and the midfielder cut inside and curled a pinpoint pass forward to Aguero. The Argentina striker took one touch and buried a low, angled shot across goalkeeper Luke Steele. City wobbled at the back to concede twice but De Bruyne stroked in Sane’s cross for the winner. Man City is through to a third League Cup final in the last five years, having also won’s England’s second-tier cup competition in 2014 and 2016. Guardiola won European Cup finals at Wembley as a player with Barcelona in 1992 and as a coach with the same Spanish team in 2011. - NZME

Adlam racks up a century By Matt MarkhaM
Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz
Simon Adlam isn’t one to get too caught up in the big stuff, he’d rather just go about his business and get things done. So, when he notched up his 100th training success when Julia Lady won the Marlborough Cup Prelude last Friday, there wasn’t much of a fuss. But after having a couple of days to think about the effort, Adlam was quite happy to acknowledge the achievement. “It’s hard enough to train one winner, let alone one hundred,” he said. “So, you have to be happy to get there, but I’ve been lucky and had some really nice horses and good owners who have helped me along the way.” Adlam became aware he was close to the magical mark earlier in the month when he drew near to the milestone and was alerted by a friend. “I think that might have been when I was on 98 or 99, but I didn’t really think too much of it.” But when Julia Lady burst through the inside to beat a small but select field last Friday – there was no denying it. It was fitting too that it came in Blenheim, which was where Adlam really cut his teeth in the

In brief She’s A Thief gets nod Successful Karaka purchaser Paul Moroney has tipped She’s A Thief as Ballymore Stables’ best chance in Saturday’s Karaka Million (1200m) at Ellerslie. Moroney’s brother Michael and his Matamata training partner Pam Gerard will also saddle Bocce and Scorch in the juvenile feature. “We’re proud to have three in there,” he said. “A good barrier is a big help in a two-year-old dash and She’s A Thief is probably the best of ours.”

game. “I came up here to work for Ron Hamilton and it’s actually where I first got my trials licence and began driving. “We used to go over the hill to Nelson and all that and even down to Murchison when they had trials there, but I had my first drive at Blenheim and spent quite a bit of time there, so it was quite good to get it there.” Adlam doesn’t do much on the
driving side of things these days, preferring to use guys like Craig Thornley, Gerard O’Reilly and Ricky May but he does have 30 driving wins next to his name. Working a team of “always around six” he’s got some handy ones around him including an inform Julia Lady and To Ri Caitlin, who looks promising. Unfortunately, the racing career of last start winner, To Ri Elsie
is over after she shattered a bone in her fetlock. Adlam saved the mare and will use her for breeding. “It’s quite a handy family.” Adlam’s first winner came in 1993 when Breeny Boy was victorious at Timaru. He trained Second Wind to win the Taylor Mile at Alexandra Park in 2010 – his first and, thus far, only Group One success.
The connections of Hiflyer have resisted the temptation to extend the dual Group Three winner’s preparation. “He’s been very, very good to me and the owners so we’ve decided to give him a nice spell and he’ll come back bigger and stronger,” trainer Peter Lock said. “We’ve got to look after him, he’s still a little bit immature. He’s been raced sparingly and puts in 110 per cent every time.”
Off to Pukekohe Endowment will take another step toward the Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m) preparation on Friday. “He’ll run over a mile at the Counties meeting and then go to the Avondale Guineas,” said Chris Gibbs, who trains with Donna Logan. - NZ Racing Desk

A new musical by Charles Dickens and Penny Aston. Following the sold out global successes of Promise and Promiscuity, Penny Ashton (Radio NZ The Panel, Hot Pink Bits) swaps Austen for Dickens and brings orphaned hero Olive, and a squalid gaggle of Victorian characters to pox ridden London life. One woman portrays 15 characters in an hilarious musical journey that will fulfil your greatest expectations..

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): To avoid wasting your energy, be strategic in your placement of it. Go where you’re likely to get the most cooperation. Together you’ll accomplish more. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The word “fan” comes from “fanatic,” meaning “a person filled with single-minded zeal.” It’s a state of being responsible for great harm in the world. It’s far better to be open-mindedly supportive. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Children make socially inappropriate statements because they have yet to learn what’s acceptable. Then there are those who will never learn. You’ll help them though. You’ll be a guiding force of decorum. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You may feel as though you are swinging your arms and flailing about in an attempt to regain balance. In fact, this a rather accurate depiction of what everyone is doing. It is the very essence of “action.” LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): In a cruel loophole, pointing out another person’s rudeness is rude. And if there’s anything to avoid at all costs today, it’s rudeness – because it will ultimately make you disappointed in yourself. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Silliness can be the preservation of sanity. And even if the situation isn’t in dire need of silliness, it’s the ingredient that will make your time memorable and fun. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Excellent question of the day: “Who cares?” – not in a snarky or defeatist sort of tone, but an investigative one. The answer will be your best customer, your ardent supporter, your dear friend. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You’ve started many things with good intentions but life gets in the way. It doesn’t make you a slacker; it makes you a person who tends to priorities. But consider priorities today. Is it time to adjust them? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Someone you look up to as a role model isn’t fit for the job. (Maybe you’ve made mistake of casting a movie star in that position.) You will seek and find guidance from one with real-world accomplishments. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Before you dive into a project or take things in a new direction, play it out in the theatre of your mind. It will be easier to try new things if you first take away the potential consequences. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Here’s an insane quest: Try and find the perfect partner, job or situation. The insanity will come at no extra charge. Accept imperfection, however, and you’ll get brilliant results. Sanity is included in the price. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): People who are hard to read can have you coming back for more. Once you have them figured out, fascination wanes. The one who intuits this and makes it a mission to keep you guessing will enthral you.

Nadal hits out Rafael Nadal has accused organisers of the Australian Open of jeopardising the futures of tennis players by forcing them into dangerously busy schedules. The No.1 seed was forced to retire in the fifth set of his quarter-final clash with Marin Cilic after suffering a leg muscle injury. A frustrated Nadal linked the tournament’s heavy schedule with the high number of injuries this year. “Somebody who is running the tour should think a little bit about what’s going on. Too many people are getting injured,” Nadal said in a postmatch press conference.

Young Mid Canterbury tennis stars are getting put through their paces this week as part of the Mid Canterbury Tennis Excellence Camp. Under the watchful eye and tutelage of Mid Canterbury Tennis coach, Andrew van Rooyen, more than 50 children from a wide range of age groups are taking part in the camp which sees attendees put into groups of players of a similar level.
“It’s been great to see the tennis courts full again this week,” van Rooyen said. “And it has been a really good opportunity for these youngsters to get back into the swing of tennis again before the interclub competitions kick back off again this weekend.” The camp, which began on Monday and finishes today, has seen the young tennis stars tested with extreme heat as well as an intense training regime to help them hone their skills.
Van Rooyen said he had been incredibly impressed with the level of effort and application. “They’re all keen to get out there and hit a ball around as well as learn some new skills and fine tune others. “The number of kids here is really satisfying too, it has been great to see the growth in numbers in the younger section of the sport here in Ashburton.” The coaching hasn’t just been left to van Rooyen either with some of the older stars of the
Mid Canterbury tennis scene calling into the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre to give a helping hand including Tessa McCann who was on hand yesterday to act as a bit of a role model. “Having players like Tessa give their time has been great for the camp as well, the young ones really look up to the likes of her.” The camp concludes today before tennis action for 2018 gets into full swing on Saturday morning and afternoon.
Chung into Australian Open semi-finals Hyeon Chung is the first Korean to reach a grand slam semi-final after continuing his spectacular Australian Open run at Melbourne Park. The 21-year-old world No.58 outclassed unseeded American Tennys Sandgren 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 yesterday to also become the lowest-ranked man to make the last four of the Open since
Marat Safin in 2004. Chung will play second-seeded titleholder and five-time champion Roger Federer or Czech Tomas Berdych on Friday night for a most improbable berth in the final. “Whoever win, I’m playing. I don’t care,” a jubilant Chung said. Backing up from his stylish straight-sets victory over six-time

winner Novak Djokovic, Chung showed no signs of a psychological letdown as he broke Sandgren four times on Rod Laver Arena to storm into the last four in two hours and 28 minutes. Triumphant at the 2017 NextGen Finals in Milan, Chung has carried his blazing form to Melbourne, adding Sandgren to his growing list of scalps this fort-
night that also include world No.4 Alexander Zverev, the German’s brother Mischa who ousted Andy Murray last year and Sydney International champion Daniil Medvedev. At 21 and 254 days, Chung is also the youngest men’s grand slam semi-finalist since Marin Cilic at the 2010 Australian Open. - AAP
More than 70,000 tickets have sold for the world heavyweight unification clash between Joseph Parker and Anthony Joshua. The ticket blitz is believed to have broken the record as the fastest-selling event in history of Cardiff ’s Principality Stadium. Joshua’s boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, revealed on Twitter that the tickets had sold out at 1.04pm – just over an hour after they had gone on sale. Only a limited number of remaining tickets, priced between $NZ500 and $NZ1000, will go on sale next week.
30,000 milestone LeBron James has become the seventh – and youngest – player to score 30,000 NBA career points. The Cleveland Cavaliers star hit an 18-foot jump shot with 1.1 seconds left in the first quarter against the San Antonio Spurs to give him 30,001 points. He joins a club that includes just one other active player, Dirk Nowitzki (30,837 points). Also ahead of James on the scoring list are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone (36,928), Kobe Bryant (33,643), Michael Jordan (32,292) and Wilt Chamberlain (31,419). - AP
