Stacey Scott: CONFIRMED

David Anderson: CONSIDERING

Who will it be? Strong interest in Rangitata candidacy By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Just one person has so far confirmed they are seeking the role of Rangitata electorate National Party candidate. The party is urgently seeking a candidate following the sudden resignation of incumbent Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, and nominations close midday this coming Wednesday. Stacey Scott of Timaru said she had been working towards running for the seat for several years, and was excited the opportunity had come up to represent the people of the electorate. The 43-year-old lives with her husband Dave and four children in St Andrews, and operates project management company Scott and Associates. Among those considering applying for the role is David Anderson of Timaru. The 52-year-old unsuccessfully stood for selection the last time National needed to fill the seat, in 2017 following the resignation of Jo Goodhew. At that time the now-disgraced Falloon won the candidacy, having received the most votes from the electorate’s National Party members in a secret ballot.

Anderson said he had not made any firm decision yet on whether he would stand, but had had a number of approaches. Raised on the family farm in South Canterbury, a graduate of Lincoln University and a former Kellogg Scholar, Anderson lives on a lifestyle block at Otaio south of Timaru. He has two adult children and is a regular columnist and commentator in the rural and agribusiness media as part of his work operating a public relations company. Up for the candidacy alongside Falloon and Anderson in 2017 was Henry Acland of Mt Peel. Acland said yesterday he had ruled out seeking the nomination a second time round. Others to have completely ruled out having a shot at the job include former Ashburton mayor and former Wigram National candidate Angus McKay, and Mid Canterbury freelance commentator and Harness Racing New Zealand clerk of the course Craig Wiggins. McKay said yesterday he had not given the role any consideration at all, while Wiggins confirmed he had been ap-

proached but “there’s too many farmer-good projects on the go to walk away from and sit on a back bench”. National’s Selwyn candidate Nicola Grigg has also ruled out the role, and has no intention to switch electorates. Born and raised at Mt Somers, Grigg said she would be continuing to focus her attention on the neighbouring National stronghold electorate, where she has been selected to replace Amy Adams. However, those who may have a go include another who has

strong roots in Mid Canterbury – Sam Johnson. Brought up in Mayfield, Johnson went on to become the 2012 Young New Zealander of the Year following his work rallying the Student Volunteer Army in Christchurch following the February 2011 earthquake. Johnson said he had been approached, and was interested. “I’m really interested in the opportunity to give something back to the area that gave me so much, but really unsure at the moment whether it’s the right decision for me,” Johnson said.

Environment Canterbury councillor and National Party member Megan Hands has likewise not ruled out throwing her hat in the ring. She said yesterday she was considering options. “I have been a party member for a decade and I have a strong track record within the party,” Hands said. She ran for ECan as an independent candidate in the Christchurch West ward at last year’s local body elections, and topped voting by almost 3000 votes.

Angus McKay, Nicola Grigg and Craig Wiggins have all indicated they have no intention to contest the vacant seat.

Murphy doubles down on driver safety By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Kiwi motorsport legend Greg Murphy has renewed calls for greater driver training procedures to help save lives on the road. The former V8 Supercars star and four-time Bathurst winner was in Ashburton this week where he conducted a meet and greet with locals at D&E Outdoors. Murphy, 47, has previously spoken out about driver training and testing, suggesting motorists take their driver licence tests every 10 years. Talking to the Guardian, he said not enough work was being done around the issue. “We’ve not done enough work ever,” he said. “We’re left in a situation where the work required is quite big and investment is huge and the country is spending a lot of time and effort on an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff kind of scenario.” Murphy added that a greater emphasis on practical skills and motor vehicle awareness rather than theory-based testing needed to be made. “Theoretical doesn’t make peo-

teach them how to be safe drivers and aware drivers.” Mid Canterbury has not been

immune from tragedy on the roads. Two people were killed in a

three-car crash near Ashburton last month. “I think the social cost for a death now is $5 million,” he said. “That doesn’t include the loss, the pain, the suffering for families and all these people who lose people. “It’s not about driving fast or learning how to do skids, it’s actually about how to recognise and be aware of certain situations in everyday driving that could put you in a situation where you have to make a decision. “We’ve got thousands of crashes happening every year that are avoidable if people knew how to use their motor vehicle properly.” A small band of petrolheads were present for the informal session on Thursday which was part of Murphy’s ambassador duties for Polaris off-road vehicles. “At any stage it’s important to get to the smaller communities. “I’ve got friends from this part of the world. “I’ve been here plenty of times over the years for many different things.” Murphy’s role as a presenter/ commentator for the Supercars Championship is also on ice at present due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Local support enables new opportunities By Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

When Covid-19 struck and the hospitality sector across New Zealand was brought to a grinding halt, locals Mark and Nicky Milmine had no idea what the future held for them. Fast forward to today, and the well-known hospitality duo are buzzing with excitement about the prospect of opening a new café in Ashburton, after they took over the lease of the former Nosh Café in Ashford Village. And they credit the possibility of them even being able to entertain the idea of extending their stable to another premises to the loyal support of the Mid Canterbury community – and their incredible bank of existing staff. With the doors to their existing operation, The Somerset Grocer firmly closed during the lockdown, there were no guarantees what life would be like from a business sense when they finally did reopen the doors. “We were heading into a bit of an unknown,” Mark said. “But this community, it’s incredible – the support we’ve had and the people through the doors of Somerset has been immense and we feel incredibly grateful to live in a community like this.” With business levels quickly returning to normal levels post-lockdown and a reasonably good outlook for the hospitality

Mark and Nicky Milmine (left) and Richard Ashford and David Lester inside the new Millhouse Kitchen while renovations take place. PHOTO MATT MARKHAM sector going forward, a chance spotting of the fact that there was a lease opportunity up for grabs got the pair thinking. “We weren’t thinking about doing anything, it hadn’t even crossed our minds – but we saw an article in the Ashburton Guardian and decided it was worth having a look at,” Nicky said.

“Straight away it worked for us, we love the building and especially the outdoor area and the possibilities that came with that. Also, our girls are getting older now too, so the timing just seemed right.” Daughters, Mickayla, who is in her second year at University, and Molly who is a Year 11 student at Ashburton College, are both heav-

ily involved in The Somerset Grocer both quickly gave their support to the idea. “They told us to go for it,” Mark said. The new business, which will operate under the name of Millhouse Kitchen is currently undergoing a makeover with the entire room and kitchen stripped back

before getting a fresh, new look and the plan is to be up and running at some point next month. A second business on top of an already frenetic café has required a bit of careful planning though and while separate entities, the two establishments will run under the same management with both Mark and Nicky splitting their time between the two venues. “We don’t want one to suffer because all the attention is on the other, so we’ll be ensuring they both work well alongside each other. “Our existing staff will be spending time at both venues to give them some variety in their working life and we’re on the hunt now for more staff to complement those we’ve already got on board.” Both Mark and Nicky said the team at Ashford Village had been incredible to work with through the journey, giving special mention to Richard and Elizabeth Ashford as well as son, James Lester and his husband, David. “It has been so much easier as Elizabeth and Richard started the original café and they have all been extremely supportive and we’re very grateful for the opportunity.” The opening of the new premises will allow the continuation of a restoration of sorts for the historic piece of real estate with more exciting developments set for the near future.

Diversions order of the day on foothills scenic route By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Life will be far from normal from next month, for motorists using Mid Canterbury’s inland scenic route. With the replacement of three bridges across the Rangitata Diversion Race (RDR) on its work programme, the Ashburton District Council plans to close sections of the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road from August to November while the bridges are demolished and rebuilt. Detours will be in place while the work is under way, service

delivery group manager Neil McCann said and the council is working with businesses in the villages along the route to ensure disruption to trade was minimal, he said. “We absolutely do understand the impact this will have and we’re doing everything we can and working with those businesses to mitigate the disruption as much as possible.” In addition to longer detours for heavy trucks, there will be shorter options using local roads for local traffic, McCann said. The details of those shorter detours were still being worked

through but they will be designed to ensure there is still good access to villages along the scenic route, he said. “There will be several detours around each bridge but we won’t be able to have heavy vehicles on those smaller, local roads. We’ve heard the concerns of people in the towns along the route and we’re trying the best we can to minimise the impact of this on them.” To achieve that, McCann said he was working with contractors to achieve the best outcome for everyone involved. It is likely the

Prices Road bridge will be the first one in the trio to be completed. The work, however will see all three bridges demolished before precast structures are trucked on site for the rebuild. Replacing the three RDR bridges has been on the council’s work plan for some time and was budgeted to take place in the last financial year. Funds have been carried over with a commitment ato complete the work in the current year, McCann said. The work will see stretches of the scenic route closed – between Surrey Hills Road and Lower Downs

Road; between Moodies Road and Prices Road and between Ashburton Staveley Road and Springburn Bushside Road. Detour routes will take northbound traffic on Mayfield Valetta Road, Thompsons Track, Ashburton Staveley Road and Forks Road. Vehicles travelling south will use Forks Road, Ashburton Staveley Road, Thompsons Track and Mayfield Valetta Road. Local property owners and people wanting to access villages along the route will still be able to use a local road detour, but they will not be able to use the bridges.

Former National candidate confident of election win By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Judith Collins has the mental toughness to survive everything the media and the public throw at her, says Gwen Clucas. The Ashburton grandmother and National Party stalwart is pleased with the party’s recent choice of leader. Clucas, herself, is a former candidate, having stood for Christchurch Central in 1978. It was the culmination of an upbringing in which she was very much impressed by the party’s passion for farmers and philosophy of providing opportunities. Growing up on the family dairy farm in Rangiwahia near Feilding, Clucas’ dad went away to serve in the air force during World War Two. Upon his return her sister was born, the happy occasion meaning a few days for Gwen at her cousin Glenis’. Glenis’ mum was one of the original National Party members after the party’s formation in 1936, and members of the large family loved talking about politics. The young Gwen, aged just eight, was fascinated by the election process and could not believe it one day when Glenis told her about an election at school. “We were walking up the hill after school, she said ‘We had fun at school today, we had an election’. I was very put out because we didn’t.” National was a clear winner in the school election, making the headmaster “very grumpy” because Labour got just two votes. After that Gwen took just as much interest in the real election as she had in the pretend one, and would listen avidly to the results broadcast on the radio each election time. When she grew up she did what she had always wanted to do, and that was become a member of the National Party. It was a decision that would end up seeing her stand as a candidate, but her first foray into politics was at the local government level. In 1977 when she and late husband Louis farmed at Hororata, she decided to stand as a councillor for the Malvern County Council. “One of the comments made was ‘What’s she going to do with her children?’ I used to say ‘Tie them to a post’… just one of the silly questions people would ask you.” The oldest of her two children was already at school and the other was a pre-schooler

Gwen Clucas grew up in the North Island with a strong interest in politics. and able to be looked after by friends, making the day-time meetings not a problem at all. Sexism in the council was not a huge issue, but it was there all the same. Nevertheless, Clucas was elected, becoming the first woman to sit on the council. She ended up being there for three terms. Her first two terms she was the only woman, and she was joined by none other than Jenny Shipley for her third term. Her foray into central government politics was in 1978 when her children were aged four and six. She was approached to see if she would stand in Christchurch Central following the candidate, who had been appointed, falling ill. It was a Labour electorate, but Clucas gave it her best shot, getting out and canvassing door-to-door. Most were amiable, and happy to listen, although one woman, not even knowing who Clucas was or what

she was there for, chased her out onto the street with a broom. Incumbent MP Bruce Barclay won, but Clucas was happy to have held the National Party vote in the area. Clucas has been in a range of other roles in the party, including as vice chairwoman of the Rangitata electorate and chairwoman of the Rakaia electorate and chairwoman of the Wigram electorate. She has had a career in school teaching, and as her career responsibilities increased and she moved into school principal roles, her first at Springfield School, she no longer stood for the council. She retired into Ashburton in 2003. And with regard to the new party leadership, she is confident Judith Collins can take National to a win in this year’s election. “I would like to think so, it will be a very interesting time because Jacinda Ardern is so popular, especially over Covid-19, but

PHOTO SUSAN SANDYS 170720-SS-300

I have to agree with our people, they (Labour) promise a lot, but nothing much happens,” she said. In contrast, the National Party delivered, and Collins was just the person to lead the charge. “She won’t take any nonsense, she’s had the hard knocks, they have tried hard to attack her over the years. She just stands up and survives, I think she has the mental toughness really.” And this past week in politics had proved that more than anything. Clucas said Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon’s resignation and the circumstances around it had been a shock to everyone, but she was sure the electorate would bounce back. The process to select a new candidate had already begun. “And I’m sure the party will get behind whoever is selected.”

Pendarves Volunteer Fire Brigade Deputy Chief Fire Force Controller Richard McArthur has brought up 25 years with the brigade. PHOTO JAIME PITT-MACKAY 200720-JPM

■■GOLD STAR AWARD

Twenty-five years of running towards danger By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

When farmer Richard McArthur first joined the Pendarves Voluntary Rural Fire Unit in the summer of 1994/95, the unit was nothing more than a fire engine parked in its founder’s shed. Now, 25 years on, the now fully-fledged fire brigade has its own home, and McArthur is set to be recognised with a gold star, which is presented to firefighters who have served 25 years in the service. “I had been working out of the district and I came back and Pendarves had started up a wee unit,” he said. “John McManus, who started it, asked if I would come along, so I went to a few trainings and here we are.” The brigade was started in 1991 by McManus after he became frustrated following a fire spread by a hare that ran through a paddock burn-off. The unit was started with the help of the district council. The council helped fund a TK Bedford fire appliance, which was mainly stored in a former hay shed on the McManus farm. The keys were left in it and farmers could use it when they needed, even having it on site when burning off. McArthur admitted he hadn’t had the brigade officially called to his farm in the past, but he has had to call on his firefighting experience on occasion. “We started as a sub-unit of the Ashburton Rural Brigade and worked on a phone system for the different areas, so not many made it to call-outs during the day if they

were out working on the farm, it was only if they had a wife or girlfriend at home to answer the phone they would know,” he said. Initially, the brigade only attended vegetation fires and only went to around 10 call-outs a year, but that number has now grown. “We go to about 30 to 40 a year these days, we now attend medical calls and are now trained as co-responders and we can fully assist as we have got enough training,” he said. “If we get there after the first responders, we can assist them, or if we get there first we’ve got enough training to do what we need to do. “It is certainly a bit different from the early days, there were no medical calls back then.” McArthur has attended most of the major vegetation fires in the district in the past 25 years, including large fires in the riverbeds of the Ashburton and Rakaia rivers. He was also deployed several times to assist with the Port Hills fire in 2017 and more recently in the Ashburton District at the Seales Winslow fire. He is now the deputy chief fire force controller, taking over the role when Paul Stewart became the chief of the unit back in the 2000s, so long ago McArthur could not remember when it had happened. McArthur will receive his gold star at the brigade’s annual awards dinner, where medals or achievements of members of the brigade are recognised each year.

Dancers back on the stage Competitive Highland Dancing returns to the stage of Ashburton today for the first time this year with huge numbers flocking to town for only the second competition of it’s kind in New Zealand since Covid-19 lockdown. The Ashburton Highland and National Dancing Association

will host the event at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre today with more than 100 competitors from the right up in the far north to the deep south coming to compete. With the National Championships, which will be held in Blenheim, shifted to October due to

Mustangs in town Mustangs from around Canterbury bolted to Methven last weekend for a gathering of the Canterbury Mustang Owners’ Club. More than 60 vehicles from around the district gathered at the Blue Pub in Methven. Organiser Patrick Forde said he was thrilled with the turn-out, with around a dozen cars from South Canterbury, around 16 locals and the rest from north of the Rakaia turning out. Forde told the Guardian previously he had organised the run as a show of support for the town which, like many, would be battling following the Covid-19 lockdown. PHOTO SUPPLIED

Covid-19, today will be a good opportunity for competitors to get on stage and put together a performance to begin serious preparations for the drive toward to National Glory. Today’s competition begins around 8:30am with the day expected to last until the late

evening. A competition spokesperson said they encouraged members of the public to come along and witness the competition and learn more about what it’s all about. Entry to watch the competition is free.

There was one new case of Covid-19 reported in New Zealand yesterday after two days of no new cases, the Health Ministry has confirmed. The new case is a man in his 40s who arrived in the country on July 12 from Africa. In a statement, the Health Ministry said he was staying at the Sebel Manukau and tested negative on around day three of his stay, before testing positive on day 12. The Ministry said yesterday’s case reinforced why people were tested twice during their time in managed isolation.

Refugee status Immigration New Zealand has confirmed that Behrouz Boochani has been given refugee status in New Zealand. Boochani has been in New Zealand since November. He had travelled to Christchurch for a writers’ festival on a onemonth visa and was supported by Amnesty International. He catapulted to worldwide fame in 2019 after his book, No Friend But The Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison, won the Victorian Prize for Literature, Australia’s richest literature prize.

Masks needed New Zealand has the lowest Covid-19 death rate of any OECD country, but researchers say we’re tempting fate by not introducing masks and better contact tracing to stop the virus re-establishing here. The country’s death toll from the virus of 22 would have reached 990 people by now if we had the average death per-capita rate of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s 37 member nations, Otago University public health researchers say.

Local exhibition for self-taught artist By Susan Sandys

Left – New Zealand artist Michael Holland has his exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery opening tomorrow.

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Welcome to the movie theatre inside your head. That could well be the sub-title for Michael Holland’s exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery, which opens tomorrow. Echo of Memories features a series of colourful works by the Kiwi artist who is based in Christchurch. The medium is oil on canvas, the genre less defined. “I kind of try to make my own,” Holland said. Some called his work surrealism, but he did not believe that fitted despite the fact he liked to delve into dream and memory, with the concept of making the real unreal, and the unreal real. Echo of Memories, the painting, has the intricacies of a brain as part of the foreground, alongside elements of a picture theatre. From here a figure looks out to a vista which represents what is in their head, and may either be their life memories or what is on their phone. “This is the movie theatre, but it’s inside your head,” Holland said. Holland grew up in Christchurch and still lives there today. However, his parents grew up in Mid Canterbury, and he still

had strong family connections to the area. “It’s kind of like a homecoming for me really,” he said of being

able to exhibit at the Ashburton Art Gallery. He failed art at school, and never went to art school, yet today his

works can sell for tens of thousands of dollars. He was working in sales when he began his career as an artist

about 20 years ago, in his early 30s, after he began painting pictures he saw in a book about Vincent Van Gogh. “It’s been tough at times, but in the last 10 years it’s taken off,” he said of his career. Holland said he was looking forward to the opening tomorrow, where he will give an artist’s talk alongside fellow artists, Ben Lysaght and Anthony Davies, both of whom have exhibitions underway at the gallery. Curator Shirin Khosraviani said it would be the first big event since the Covid lockdown. It will be open to the public, begins at 2pm, and will be followed by afternoon tea.

wenty months have gone since I rejoined the Ashburton Guardian and I’ve written stories on homicides, fatal car crashes, massive fundraising events, the Crusaders taking on the Hurricanes at the showgrounds, but the one set of stories I’ve written that seem to have made the biggest splash here in my second stint at the Guardian are a few words I’ve scribbled about some fish and chip shops. With yesterday being my last day at the Guardian before moving into a new job, it begs the question, am I going to be remembered as the fish and chip guy? The Fry-day Fry-up generated by the far the most feedback I have ever received. Emails, people stopping me in the street, they came from all walks of life. Politicians, principals, real estate agents and house movers. Everyone had an opinion on what their favourite fish and chip shop was. People were passionate and deeply caring about their favourite takeaway spot. I’m not worried if I am remembered as the fish and chip guy, for one simple reason. We are journalists, we don’t set out to become known by the stories we write, but by the impact they have on the community. We, as journalists, are here to provide all

the facts, generate a balanced story and hopefully inform or assist where we can. Journalism plays a key role in communities, and the Ashburton District is incredibly well represented in that regard. There have been some incredible tragedies in the past 20 months, but there have also been some incredible tales of success and hope, and that is representative of just how great this little district is. We have come out of the Covid-19 lockdown running, relative to the rest of the country, and I’ll be following on with keen interest to see how that progresses. There will be changes to the way the Guardian operates, that is well known. But I am sure the great stories of this district will continue to be told in a great way. So it is farewell from me, but that doesn’t really matter, I’m just the fish and chip guy.

Chargeback fraud becoming common A pizza shop owner who uncovered what is known in the retail industry as “chargeback or refund fraud” wants more businesses and consumers to be on alert. Customers are using online discount offers to order services and food – which the scammers pay for using someone else’s stolen bank details. The owner of a Domino’s Pizza franchise, who did not want to be named, noticed something unusual on an invoice from May as money deducted from her account showing up as “chargebacks”. “It has never happened like this. We had so many chargebacks. I think for my shop, I had five or six chargebacks,” she said. Confused, she contacted the customers who made the bookings but they said the orders were real. An investigation by the company found all of these customers placed their orders using third-party online advertising deals on WeChat, a social media platform popular among the Chinese community. However, in these cases the third party was a scammer who pocketed the money and instead

used someone else’s stolen bank details to pay for the orders online. When the person whose details have been stolen spotted the fraudulent transaction, their bank organised a refund from the retailer, which is known as a chargeback. The pizza franchise owner said it meant retailers have to absorb the cost of the fraud. “When they do the order, they couldn’t tell anything wrong. All goods have been pre-paid on the internet ... For the customers, it’s also okay because they bought something very cheap. The problem is only the bad people got the real money.” She said it is better for people to place orders on the official website and avoid third parties. “We’re really trying to warn people not to buy things from those bad people. Protect yourself and give us a better environment.” A Domino’s statement said what has happened was disappointing and the company takes the privacy of customers seriously. “The company has reported the WeChat scam cases and they are now the subject of a police investigation. All legitimate Domino’s

offers can be found on the Domino’s website, Offers App and verified social media channels.” Police urge anyone who notices any suspicious transactions on their bank accounts to contact them. The chief executive at Retail New Zealand, Greg Harford, said retailers need to be cautious about transactions made without a card being physically present. “Chargeback fraud is a real and substantial issue for retailers, and can be hard to manage. It’s part of a bigger picture of retail crime that costs the sector around $1 billion a year. It’s really difficult

guard against fraud.” Martin Cocker from NetSafe agreed and said credit cards are targets for fraudsters. “It’s important for businesses to have as much security and protocols as they can in place to ensure they’re dealing with real people and it’s important for them to have insurance and protection against these kinds of things which they can be victims to.” Cocker said consumers also need to be vigilant. “They should always be cautious about any goods that are offered online or advertised online that are well below their normal retail price but the reality is also that there’re lots of really good deals online that are legitimate. So price is not the only thing that you can use to detect a scam but it’s certainly something you should be aware of.” The head of research at Consumer New Zealand, Jessica Wilson, warns people to protect their credit card information. “Always check who you’re dealing with. Look at the contact details on the website. Look for a physical address and phone number before you hand over your credit card details.”

for the retailers because the customers are generally protected from credit card fraud but merchants are often the one bearing the cost at the end of the day,” he said. “It pays for retailers to be very cautious about transactions made over the telephone or without a card physically being present. Mastercard offers an Ethoca Alert service that can help businesses manage the risks of card fraud, and has been offering a free trial of that service during July. Retail NZ strongly urges retailers to be looking at 3D secure protocols for their e-commerce site to

Huge grant for Otago Polytechnic

A new trades training centre will be built at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin. The government has announced $28 million in grants and loans for the $31.7 million project at the polytechnic’s Forth Street campus. Infrastructure Minister Shane Jones said the three-storey building would allow more students to train in building and construction, in specialist and fit-for-purpose facilities. Otago Polytechnic is a subsidiary of New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, which currently teaches trades programmes in leased, pre-fab buildings. The funding comes from the government’s $3 billion infrastructure package, in the Covid-19 Response

and Recovery Fund. Jones said the construction industry desperately needed welltrained workers for the government’s “pipeline of infrastructure”. The new centre will also accommodate plumbing, drain-laying and gas-fitting training programmes. Education Minister Chris Hipkins said the project was significant to the region and the wider construction industry. “Otago Polytechnic is a major training provider for the construction trades – both regionally and nationally – and will help the sector rebuild skills and recover from the economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and lock-down,” he said. It is hoped the project will create up to 200 jobs during construction

and put money into the pockets of local businesses, suppliers and workers. Otago Polytechnic said construction activity could begin within months, subject to consent and approval, and be complete by mid 2022. It is pledging to resource the project largely with local tradespersons and companies, and source construction materials from a national supplier. Chief executive Megan Gibbons said the polytechnic’s role would be two-fold in coming years. “As we contribute to vocational education in New Zealand, we also acknowledge we have a part to play in the economic recovery,” she said.

Diary, log exports drive up trade surplus The country has recorded its fifth consecutive monthly trade surplus with the annual deficit falling to its lowest level in nearly six years. Official figures from Stats NZ show a trade surplus of $426 million for June, taking the annual deficit down to $1.2 billion, the lowest since late 2014. Trade surpluses are usual for this time of year as agricultural produce sales hit highs on overseas markets. Dairy produce and logs drove export earnings to $5.1 billion dollars for the month, while imports were $4.6b, up on the month before but flat on a year ago. The Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown have dampened activity and reduced demand, particularly for vehicles and fuel.

The import bill was boosted by the one-off purchase of a naval ship, HMNZS Aotearoa, without which the trade surplus would

have been $821 million. ASB senior economist Mark Smith expected the current pattern of solid demand for exports and reduced imports to continue in the near term. “We expect a period of very low annual trade deficits, and potentially trade surpluses, over the year ahead.” “The environment for trade, however, will likely remain difficult as the global economy grapples with a global pandemic and the surfacing of increasing protectionist sentiment,” he said. The strength of exports, particularly agricultural products, are expected to support economic activity this year and go some way to offsetting the loss of overseas tourists and students.

Age starting to catch up It’s not easy being an action hero – especially as you get older. Just ask glamour icon, Charlize Theron, 44, who excelled beyond expectations as the bald and beautiful badass Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road. She followed it up with kick-ass roles in Atomic Blonde, and The Fate Of The Furious, both in 2017, and more recently, in the Netflix film, The Old Guard. Evidently, she has no intention of slowing down. “Yeah, when I entered this world at 40, it didn’t necessarily feel like that much of a shock (physically) because of my dance background, though yes it hurts, for sure. ”

Russia’s action poses a threat to other satellites in space, critics say.

■■RUSSIA

Space accusations fly The UK and United States have accused Russia of launching a weapon-like projectile from a satellite in space. In a statement, the head of the UK’s space directorate said: “We are concerned by the manner in which Russia tested one of its satellites by launching a projectile with the characteristics of a weapon.” The statement said actions like this “threaten the peaceful use of space”. The US has previously raised concerns about this Russian satellite. In his statement, Air Vice Marshal Harvey Smyth, head of the UK’s space directorate, said: “Actions like this threaten the peaceful use of space and risk causing debris that could pose a threat to satellites and the space systems on which the world depends.

“We call on Russia to avoid any further such testing. “We also urge Russia to continue to work constructively with the UK and other partners to encourage responsible behaviour in space.” It is the first time the UK has made accusations about Russian test-firing in space, the BBC’s defence correspondent Jonathan Beale says, and comes just days after an inquiry said the UK government “badly underestimated” the threat posed by Russia. The incident will heighten concerns of a new arms race in space, he added, saying other nations are also investigating technologies that could be used as weapons in space. The US said the Russian satellite sys-

tem was the same one that it raised concerns about in 2018 and also earlier this year, when the United States accused it of manoeuvring close to an American satellite. On this latest incident, General Jay Raymond, who heads US space command, said there was evidence “that Russia conducted a non-destructive test of a spacebased anti-satellite weapon”. He said Russia “injected a new object into orbit” from a satellite. Raymond added: “This is further evidence of Russia’s continuing efforts to develop and test space-based systems and [is] consistent with the Kremlin’s published military doctrine to employ weapons that hold US and allied space assets at risk.”

Big bucks for this bling Demi Lovato’s engagement ring could have cost $400,000. The Heart Attack star was gifted the stunning emeraldcut engagement ring, designed by Peter Marco, by her fiance Max Ehrich and jewellers believe it could have a hefty price tag. Ira Weissman, founder of The Diamond Pro, told Page Six Style: “With a stunning helicopter pad of an emerald-cut centre diamond and the classic pairing with trapezoid side stones, Demi’s ring looks to make it to the hall of fame of celebrity engagement rings. The approximately 5-carat diamond is clearly of the highest quality and could easily fetch over $380,000.”

■■UNITED STATES

Trump cancels big Republican convention President Donald Trump has cancelled the Republican Party convention in Florida, citing the pandemic, as US coronavirus cases passed 4 million. “It’s not the right time for that,” he said, adding that he would still give a convention speech in a different form. His party’s convention was due to take place in Jacksonville, Florida next month. Trump said he had already informed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of the decision, which comes as the United States grapples with large numbers of new Covid-19 cases outside of the Northeast, the region hit hardest in the early months of the outbreak. Florida is now among the states with the highest number of new coronavirus cases and has seen more nearly 390,000 cases of the virus and more than 5600 deaths, according to a Reuters tally. The state reported its largest number of deaths in a single day from the coronavi-

rus this week. The sheriff in Jacksonville warned this week the city was not ready for such a party jamboree. The event was relocated from Charlotte, North Carolina, after that state imposed social distancing rules. Although the Jacksonville events have been called off, some delegates will still gather in Charlotte. Trump told yesterday’s White House coronavirus briefing that safety was his primary concern behind the decision. Opinion polls suggest Trump is facing an uphill battle for a second term in office amid criticism of his handling of the pandemic. Last month, the Democratic convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, also due to take place in August, was drastically scaled back. Trump’s challenger, Joe Biden, will be formally nominated by his party at that event.

The United States recorded more than 1000 deaths from Covid-19 for the third day in a row yesterday, as the outbreak strained hospitals in California, Florida and Texas. The rise in the US death toll has not seen back-to-back days with over 1000 lives lost since early June. Many states and local governments in May lifted restrictions and reopened beaches, restaurants and businesses, triggering a surge in cases in June and an increase in fatalities in July. So far in July, 17 states have broken one-day records for increases in Covid-19 deaths. With not all states reporting yet, deaths rose by at least 1014 to a total of 144,211 compared with a rise of 1135 yesterday and a jump of 1141 on Wednesday. Total cases across the United States surpassed 4 million and rose by at least 60,000 yesterday.

Renate sueing Elton Sir Elton John is being sued by his ex-wife for $5.8 million. Elton, 73, tied the knot with German sound engineer Renate Blauel in Sydney, Australia, in 1984 and came out as gay in 1988 after their divorce, and Renate, 67, is now suing Elton after he wrote about their marriage in his autobiography. Renate has filed documents with the High Court in London and is claiming that Elton’s comments about her in the book broke the terms of an agreement they made after their split and triggered longstanding mental health issues.

Big name stars carry life-saving message clout I t’s not something new, but Greg Murphy’s messages from his visit to town on Thursday bring a very important subject back back under the spotlight in a week where everything else has been pushed to one side due to other issues we’ve faced. There’s no point in trying to hide from the fact that we have a bit of a problem in the way we are when we get behind the wheel in this country. It’s not everyone, but it’s easily too many of us. Our road toll statistics are bad. And not really getting any better and Murphy, who does plenty of work in the driver training sphere, is better placed than most to offer honest opinion on the matter. So, when a man of his stature stands up and points to an issue and declares it a problem, we should sit up and listen. Because we don’t get told by people of his standing very often. And that doesn’t just equate to our driving habits either. I’ve always been of the opinion that we don’t use some of the higher powers in this country often enough to get a message down to us everyday New Zealanders. We’ve got these people who are out there, who are revered by most of the country and if they were to tell people something, the chance of them actually listening would be a lot higher than it is now with an unknown face on a television screen or a billboard on the side of the road. Why not use people like Richie McCaw or Steve Hansen more – not just to advertise commercial opportunities like heat pumps and garage doors, but important stuff – information that is critical to the people of New Zealand. Imagine a safe driving ad using some of the biggest names in New Zealand, names like Greg Murphy who is known and respected around all corners. That’d be a good positive step in the right direction.

Righteousness exalts a nation I

n a few short weeks, this country will again be going to the polls to elect a government to preside over them for the next three years. For many it will their first time voting, for others, they will vote for whom they have voted for for many years and their parents possibly voted that way too. Unfortunately, many politicians will be voted for based on their winning smile and not on the policies and values they stand for. Others will look at previous performance, laws enacted and proposed, be swayed by promises that never eventuate and a whole raft of reasons to tick the box of their preferred Member of Parliament. I wonder how many voters will base their choice on the integrity, morality and honesty of the politician? How many look at the value of the candidate rather than at the promises made? The integrity of the heart results in integrity of decisions

CHRISTIAN COMMENT

made. Like a computer, ‘garbage in, garbage out’ was the old but still relevant idiom. “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flows the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23) Unfortunately, all who have rejected God and His Son Jesus Christ as their Saviour, have also rejected many of the moral values and standards that should be controlling their lives and decisions. They all do what is right in their own eyes, forgetting that “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, watching the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3) This applies to us all, politicians and voters. The question then needs to be asked: “How do we get a good government that will do good for the country, for ‘Righteousness

exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people’?” (Proverbs 14:34). The answer is simple. Are you, personally, in a right relationship with God, through faith in the saving grace of God through Jesus, His Son? A nation is changed one person at a time as individuals surrender their lives to Him. For “There is none righteous, not even one.” (Rom 3:10) and “All our righteousness is as filthy rags”. (Isaiah 64:6). Repentance for your personal sinful life based on your separation from God through original sin committed by Adam in the garden of Eden, through whom all mankind has been affected, is the only way to make this country righteous, for then you will start to live righteously according to God’s standards, not man’s. “The integrity of the upright will guide them.” (Proverbs 11:3). “Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake

his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord, and He will have compassion on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” (Isaiah 55:6-7). What greater promise can an individual or country have other than this. A God in heaven who desires to impart His righteousness to all who call upon Him. He has a well-being policy that supersedes any that any Government can produce. Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, and let not the rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the Lord (Jeremiah 9:23-24). Are dogs allowed? S

o, in a political week with more surprises than a Christmas present from my mother-in-law, it was lovely to see the party of blue supporting our local paper by placing an ad in the situations vacant. While tempted to have a go, I lack the ability to take Parliament’s Question Time seriously and would spend more time in detention than not. Look, in all honesty (and you know it’s true), the vacancy could be filled by a Mongolian yak herder with the IQ of a typical American voter, and they would still win the seat, such is the blue blood that flows in the veins of the Rangitata constituents. So, in the words of a former principal (who had the ability to turn any conversation into a dreary monologue about his educational accomplishments), this begs the question – are dogs allowed? Seriously, can our dog Gizmo apply? You see Gizmo has all the traits we need. Loyalty If you want loyalty, Gizmo has that coming out of his ears. Gizmo will stick with you because, at some point, he knows he will get a treat or you will feed him. It’s a really simple equation with him – feed me and I’ll be ya mate! Forgiveness Gizmo has long got over the

Peter Livingstone OUT OF SCHOOL

cone of shame he had to wear after having his man-raisins removed. He may not have got over the removal, but definitely the cone. That’s because he lasted less than 24 hours with the stupid thing. Gizmo not only forgave us for this ludicrous, but brief, addition to his wardrobe, he actually demonstrated a fondness for it by chewing off chunks and attempting to ingest them raising with us the possibility of expensive surgery. Listening skills No other family member has come close to having to listen to endless TikTok videos, 1pm Covid-19 announcements, whingeing from educationalists or the bizarre outbursts of a wanna-be stand-up comedian emanating from the spa pool. His ability to listen and not pass judgement is more valuable than hand sanitiser. Gizmo has two ears and one mouth and knows exactly what each is for. However, there is only one drawback to this idea to cross

pets with politics – you never know when the crap is going to go down. Hang on – it’s the same in both worlds so maybe it could work. In the recent school holidays we took the opportunity to take up a cheaper campervan rental and headed south. Of course, Gizmo the Great was part of the Livingstone Travellers Show. Gizmo took in all the sights and smells of the Catlins, Mackenzie Country and Queenstown. Now, it was while we were in the Jewel of the South that Gizmo put on a display of Chernobyl proportions. You see, Gizmo is just a regular guy. Once or twice in the morning and maybe once later in the day. Knowing that he would be guarding the camper while we took on the luge, he joined us for a morning walk through the centre of town while we sussed out somewhere for breakfast. Now I don’t know if you have experience walking a dog, but you get used to the reasons for why they stop. You can tell when the leash goes tight if it’s temporary because he wants to seriously sniff the aftermath of another canine marking their territory, or if it’s because he needs to suddenly lose weight in an exercise that I call leaving some gorilla fingers. The problem was, it happened

just as we were on a pedestrian crossing. As we approached the far side, the leash in my hand tightened and I turned to see Gizmo repaint the white line with a papier-mâché sculpture in shades of tussock brown. It was not helped by my better half and youngest child delightfully shaking in their thermals as I alternated between panicked scraping and gathering with a plastic bag, and berating Gizmo for such a public display of disdain for Queenstown Lakes District Council property. Gizmo was not fazed at all, instead he looked at me in a rather bored tone of voice and waited for the walking to recommence while he took off having felt much better. But if this is his only flaw, then I think Gizmo deserves a shot at the job. He will campaign for fresh water on every street corner, the criminalisation of cats who scratch furniture and the promotion of leash-free days at Argyle Park. What do you think – are dogs allowed? Hampstead have fired off a warning shot to the ACL premier competition after stomping its top-ofthe-table clash on Thursday. The blue and golds outclassed Celtic 34-20, as the highly touted clash between the two unbeaten Ashburton club sides ended in a comprehensive win for the team coached by Cindy Meadows. It was followed by wins for Methven over United and College A over Mt Somers. It was the fourth win on the bounce for Hampstead, and they are odds-on to book top spot next week in the final leg of round one. The win came off the back of a significant momentum switch after the first period where Hampstead turned around a two-goal

deficit into a seven point lead by the halftime break, as Celtic were put on the rack. The green machine never recovered from this critical phase in play, with Hampstead firing on all cylinders in every area of the court. Celtic began strongly as their midcourters worked the ball both sides of the net. They managed to distribute possession into the ring without trouble, however were missing out on crucial points from the mark. Celtic secured a 7-5 lead at the first interval, in what would ultimately be their most valuable period of action. The second quarter was all Hampstead as Celtic struggled to contain their opponents’ middle third, with Hampstead centre Kelsey Bewley left plenty of space

on the edges. As the lead changed hands, Celtic looked to provide their attacking exponents more opportunities, however Hannah Spence was again a robust defensive force from the back. Meanwhile Alice Eddington, who barely missed a shot at goal all game, and shooting partner Nicole Hands were a coherent force as they accelerated Hampstead’s scoring. After leading 17-10 at the break, Hampstead looked to put the issue beyond doubt. The side added another 11 goals in the third spell following another highly organised period of play. Celtic desperately searched for some ascendancy, however they were pressed into turnovers by a dogged defensive effort.

It was all but over by the final resumption of play, with Hampstead cruising at 28-16 as Celtic went to their bench. Hampstead shut up shop in the final period with Celtic unable to gather any steam and in the end were well beaten on the scoreboard. Methven meanwhile bounced back from two straight losses to hold off United 28-25. With both teams occupying the middle of the ladder, players looked to disrupt as best as they could during a combative initial period. It was all locked up at five goals apiece at the first break. As they did against Celtic a week earlier, Methven proceeded to move up a gear on defence. Methven secured a 13-10 lead

at halftime, following a gritty 20 minutes of netball. Despite United’s bench providing greater cohesion, Methven extended the lead out to 22-16 by the end of the third quarter. United have proven to be strong final quarter proposition this year and managed to get on top, culling their rivals’ lead in half, which provided some nervous moments for the out-of-towners. The clock, however, halted United’s comeback as Methven completed their second win of the season and United walked away with a bonus point for their toil. The result means these teams switch places on the ladder with Methven moving into third spot. College A later landed their first ACL victory in 2020, running out 37-24 winners over Mt Somers.

■■ RUGBY

Another classic in the making

V By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

We have already seen a doozy only a fortnight ago, and today’s Watters Cup semi-final at Hinds has all the makings of a rugby masterwork. Today’s knockout clash south of Ashburton between Southern and Rakaia is unquestionably the standout matchup of the two, with any semblance of favouritism best decided by a toss of the coin. This is in stark contrast to the other playoff in Methven, where a plucky Hampstead team, strangers to finals rugby head in as firm outsiders. Home ground advantage plays a signif-

icant part during knockout rugby, and it may provide enough of a leg-up in Hinds for Southern. The Hinds Domain was the setting for the match of the competition two weeks ago, when the home side was edged by Methven in a fierce, see-sawing classic. They host Rakaia today, a side who have exhibited an iron-fisted streak in disposing of the lesser sides. However the dark blues are forced to surrender home advantage following losses to Southern in the opening weekend and last week against Cup frontrunners Methven. Whether they can recapture their mojo remains to be seen, however the home

team will still have their work cut out for them. The defending Watters Cup champions will be determined for a possible final replay against Methven following their dramatic win in 2019. Those who have been there and done that will be integral for both sides, especially for Southern, who had to rely on their experienced heads to get them out of jail at Celtic last weekend. Southern may reap the benefits of getting that scratchy performance out of their system as they look to operate in a more cohesive manner in front of their home patrons today.

Further inland and Hampstead will be looking to play spoilers and will embrace their underdog stature. A clinical Methven outfit awaits the Ashburton club, and the competition frontrunners will have to have a monumental off day if they are to be denied a third consecutive Watters Cup final appearance. Hampstead will be buoyed by their previous meeting where Methven ran out 25-5 winners. If the blue and golds bring the noise up front and manage to disrupt Methven and steal some ball at the breakdown, there just might be a glimmer of hope for the visitors.

Barrett finally gets his preferred playing option Beauden Barrett will make his first appearance for the Blues at first five against the Chiefs in Super Rugby Aotearoa. Barrett, the two-time world player of the year, will make the first of his six starts for the Blues at first-five after playing at fullback since moving from the Hurricanes. “We have always said that we have brought Beauden to the

Blues to run the cutter, but after the season-ending injury to Stephen Perofeta, it forced a rethink. “He was our best option for fullback with the luxury have having another outstanding No 10. in Otere Black,” Blues coach Leon MacDonald said. “With Otere carrying a slight injury, then we’ve moved Beauden to 10 and I am sure he is looking forward to that challenge, while

Matt Duffie was good when he came on at fullback.” Another Blues player, Blake Gibson, will also mark a milestone at Eden Park on Sunday when he returns from a hamstring twinge to play at openside in his 50th game. Kurt Eklund has been named at hooker after an energetic display against the Hurricanes; Gerard Cowley-Tuioti starts at lock with Josh Goodhue to come off the

bench after some big minutes in this campaign, while Caleb Clarke and TJ Faiane return. In the reserves All Black Karl Tu’inukuafe and Sam Nock return from injury while utility Emoni Narawa is bracketed with Otere Black, who will need to come through Friday’s contact session. Black came off after a bump to his neck last week, and while he passed the HIA, there is stiffness

with neck movement. If he does not play, then Harry Plummer will cover first five. “Overall we want a much more focused and energetic effort this week, particularly from the pack so we can supply some front-foot ball to set our backline into action,” MacDonald said. “We know the Chiefs are much better than their results and will bring everything to this match as they always do.”

■■BASKETBALL

Newlands impress on court Newlands made the biggest statement in Men’s A Grade basketball on Wednesday night with a strong victory, while Team Donkey kept their unbeaten season intact later in the night. In the opening match-up of the evening, Newlands took on College in what promised to be an interesting encounter. College were coming straight off the back of their victory on Tuesday night against Christchurch Boys’ High School. That form looked to have carried over when the young side raced out to an early 10-0 lead, but Newlands got into their work and the score was 23-20 in favour of College at the end of the first quarter. College again started strongly in the second quarter and managed to put the squeeze on the Newlands attacking prowess, and looked to have the game under control at halftime with a 50-39 lead. But the third quarter saw things go pear-shaped for College as they dropped off in intensity and lost a lot of their structure at the offensive end of the court. Newlands made the most of that and forced some strong turnovers, and eventually they clawed back the lead and went into the fourth quarter with a 67-58 buffer. In the fourth, College got things back on track, but the experience of the Newlands side counted for

plenty as they repelled the challenge and eventually took the match 91-85. Marc Juntilla was the star performer for the Newlands side with a 29-point effort. Sam Rodgers was in good form

with 17 points, while Marvin Agacer found form in the second half to put together 14 points. College again relied heavily on Riley Sa, his 21 points a big contribution in a losing effort. Kambell Still picked up 14

points while James Reid notched up 11. The night’s second match also promised to be an exciting affair with competition newcomers, Wildlife taking on Team Donkey. If the match had been hyped up

as a classic, there was a feeling of something missing at the end of the first quarter though, as neither side was able to find some momentum with Team Donkey holding an 18-12 lead. The second quarter didn’t get any better for Wildlife, but it did for Team Donkey, who managed to convert a lot of their possession and with a 47-28 lead at half- time, the game threatened to blow right out. Wildlife picked up the intensity in the third and worked hard on defence, but still struggled to get the ball into the basket and the game was effectively over at the end of the third with Team Donkey in control at 66-44. With the game seemingly out of reach, Wildlife threw all they had at their opposition and managed to claw the lead back to close to 10 at one point, but the experience of Team Donkey and their ability to close out a match shone as they won 82-64. It might seem like history repeating itself but again Pip Johnston was the star of the show. Even though he received plenty of attention from Emiliano Guerra, he finished with an impressive 40 points. His effort combined with a 31-point effort from Cam Butler meant there wasn’t much left for anyone else. Guerra was very good for Wildlife with 21 points, and Sam Pearce chipped in with a solid 17 points.

United searching for that lucky break

By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A change of fortunes will be well-timed for Mid Canterbury United after some tough breaks over the past few weeks. The side have been well in contention during their recent Canterbury Championship League encounters, but have been unable to close out. They were denied a win against Parklands when a makeshift keeper halted a late penalty shot earlier in the month. A week later they got within a goal of league leaders Halswell United, and last week fought their way back to 3-3 against Waimak before two late strikes ended the Mid Cantabrians’ resolve. It does not get any easier for United today as they face third placed FC Twenty11, although some assistance from lady luck would not go astray for the hosts. The Christchurch club arrives at the Ashburton Domain today with a four-win, three-loss record in 2020 after falling to CCL front-runners Halswell 2-1. They will be wanting to respond accordingly today by banking three competition points. FC Twenty 11 sit second in the reserves offering another ominous proposition for their United counterparts. The visitors were humbled 5-1 by Halswell last week and will be hunting for a revival in the early game today. Across the region and Methven will want

Mid Canterbury United host FC Twenty11 in their Canterbury Championship League encounter at the Ashburton Domain today. to keep the foot on the throttle as they host Christchurch United at the Domain. The home team hold a one point lead at the top of the senior division two standings after an unbeaten seven weeks. Their opponents, who sit second from bottom, found some attacking pizzazz last week when they smacked the FC Twenty11 Bombers 9-1.

Methven should get the job done, however will be wary of complacency with the Bombers coming to Mid Canterbury with their tails up. Mid Canterbury United are also at home in division four where they face their toughest challenge in weeks in the form of Cashmere Tech. Still the only unbeaten team in its divi-

sion, United have been immovable over the campaign. However, the Canaries bring an impressive season record to Ashburton despite falling to a 1-0 defeat against Nomads United Blue. Methven are away to Ferrymead in division six after being thumped by HSOB last week as a second competition win remains elusive for the club.

■■CRICKET

Country cricket set to expand By Jonathan Leask jonathan@selwynapp.nz

The Canterbury Country Cricket premier competition is expanding for the 2020-21 summer. Canterbury Country Cricket manager Toby Doyle confirmed that following a competition review the premier competition will grow from eight to nine teams, with Ohoka promoted from the senior competition. The expansion means for a second straight season Darfield has avoided relegation. Ohoka and Mid Canterbury side Tech shared the senior title after the finals were abandoned due to Covid-19, meaning both were eligible for promotion. Ohoka accepted – and Doyle said Tech were also offered – promotion to what would have been a 10-team competition, but Tech declined the option to instead join the South Canterbury competition. It is understood the travel factor was behind the decision, as the Ashburton-based side would have faced nine away games – including a 50-minute drive to Weedons and a two-and-a-halfhour trek to Cheviot, in the 45over competition as well as likely

The Tech Stags will be playing in the South Canterbury competition this year. playing all T20 matches as away games, compared to the 45 minute drive to Timaru. The addition of Ohoka was

good news for Darfield, who had relegation looming over their heads for a second straight offseason.

Last year Kaiapoi’s withdrawal from Premier competition kept Darfield in the top grade, with Lincoln gaining promotion after

one season in Senior. After finishing last on the combined 45-over and T20 ladder Darfield was again on the chopping block, pending the competition review. Cheviot are the defending 45over champions, after being top seeds when the final was abandoned due to Covid-19. Leeston-Southbridge, Weedons and Lincoln join Darfield as the Ellesmere sides. As well as Cheviot and Ohoka, Oxford-Rangiora, Southbrook, and Sefton complete the line-up. Doyle said the competition would be a double round robin with semi-finals and a final and a full round of T20 with semi-finals and a final. He said the start date was still to be confirmed, but was likely October 3 – the same timeframe as last year. The T20 competition would likely be held during the Hawke Cup zone matches which Canterbury Country will be utilising as warm-ups for their Hawke Cup defence at the end of the summer after claiming the coveted cup off Hamilton and defending it against Central Otago at the end of the 2029-20 season.

■■OPINION

When the Windies were truly the gods of cricket

M

y esteemed editor suggested that I might like to take a look at local rugby this week, and explore why some teams make it to the big dance, while others are off on Mad Monday already, but I don’t want to, so we just won’t go there. Instead, let’s take a look at our other national game. Last week, the News people on the telly revelled in the fact that it was now a year since those awful events unfolded at Lord’s. They even dredged up some images; you know the ones, Lovely Trenty misjudging that big catch and stepping on the rope, that incoming ball hitting Ben Stokes’ bat against utterly astronomical odds and flying off to the boundary (and the umpires awarding the Poms a free run to go with it), stuff like that. Just to gleefully rub it all in. What were they thinking? My therapist argues that it’s time to start considering getting ready to prepare to face up to the horrid reality of the situation, but it’s still way, way too early for that sort of thing. Maybe on the tenth anniversary, something like that. So we’ll take a look at a different era of the game instead. I was at a mate’s place recently, and one of the hundreds of old games was being repeated on the box. The Aussies were taking on the Windies, circa mid-1980s. A glance at the West Indians brought back lots of memories of their dominance of the

Steve Devereux MY SHOUT

time; a second glance revealed the true nature of that dominance. Let’s have a look. Your team is warming up in the field, dead-set ready to take them on, and who comes out to bat? GREENIDGE, G. HAYNES, D. Ah, ok, so it’s one of the very best opening partnerships ever to trudge out to the middle. Gordon Greenidge, 185 test innings, in which he managed to eke out 7558 runs, in the notoriously most difficult position to bat, facing the best of the enemy, at their freshest, with a shiny new ball at their disposal. How the hell did he manage 16 not-outs? At the other end, waiting, lies Desmond Haynes. 202 test innings, and nearly exactly the same number of test runs as his partner. Eventually, you will get one of them out, somehow. Check the big scoreboard, and next up is: RICHARDSON, R. Right, now you’re into them. The weak link at No. 3. Richie Richardson, who was only required by the selectors to come out for 146 test innings, and in those appearances could

only manage a measly 5949 runs. One of those appearances fetching 194 runs. Averaging 44.4 runs every time he took guard. Hmmmm. But, only three days into the match, you’re finally getting to their brittle middle order, you must still be in with a chance. Let’s see: LLOYD, C. RICHARDS, V. What? Now that’s simply not fair. Sir Clive Lloyd was at the tailend of his career, so wasn’t quite the force he had been. Scant consolation for tired bowlers, rolling their arm over to the man in the big white floppy hat, the man with 19 cultured test centuries to his name, one quite big one (242 not out). Easy pickings at the other end though, it’s only Sir Vivian Richards. Ummm. You think Chris Gayle has swag? This is where Gayle learnt the meaning of the word. 8540 test runs, at an average of over 50 of them every time he strode majestically out to the middle, confidence fair dripping off him in bucketloads. I think the vast majority of those runs were sixes. Generally regarded as one of the greatest batsmen ever, with good cause. Finally, you’ve got rid of their batting line-up, only the keeper left with any sort of form with the willow. That would be: DUJON, J. Just a nuisance to get rid of.

One with over 3000 test runs aboard. And five centuries. Life wasn’t meant to be fair. Eventually, you will get a turn at bat. Your openers march out in the bright sunshine, bristling with (misplaced) confidence. Warming up to open the bowling is: AMBROSE, C. WALSH, C. Most countries, at one time or another, have a superb, wickedly fast firebrand bowler, who attacks in short bursts to terrorise all and any batsmen brave enough to take them on, with medium-pace support from the other end, and to follow. There’s Lee, Steyn, Akram, Hadlee, Akhtar, Willis; you know the drill. But here’s one from each end, both trying to outdo each other by taking out the throat of anyone daring to hook, cut or drive anything remotely visible to the batsman, which wasn’t much, and then occasionally one at the stumps to release them from their misery. Remember, getting hit by one of these deliveries is the same as holding out your arm while someone hits it, hard, with a hammer. Curtley Ambrose sent down 22,000 of these thunderbolts. But wait, there’s more. When Curtley and Courtney get a bit tired, they’re taken off and replaced by: GARNER, J. HOLDING, M. Now that really is unjustifiably extreme, brutally so.

More of the same, except with extra-chilli pace. All of these guys were six feet tall, which may not sound quite so intimidating, until you realise that’s just their legs. Michael Holding took 249 test wickets. How is that possible, with the competition he had clamouring to get a turn? Nicknamed Whispering Death, due to his quiet nature and approach to the crease, he also contributed six half-centuries to the cause with the bat. Somewhere waiting in the wings was Malcolm Marshall. Just the fact that he sometimes couldn’t get a game is truly terrifying. Did they need a spinner? Probably not really, but: HARPER, R. Often filled the bill in the mid80s, and it did help that he was regarded as a fabulous fielder. Also, batsmen would see him come on to bowl, launch at him as their only way of actually scoring runs, and promptly get caught on the boundary. Looking back at this lot, it would be really quite difficult for anyone selecting a World XI of the era to write down any other names. Wasn’t it our own Jeremy Coney who famously reached for his white hanky, and waved it plaintively in the air in abject surrender, on the cricket pitch? If indeed it was, then he was representing almost every other player in the world, in the face of sheer, dazzling cricket excellence that this lot brought to the game.

■■RICCARTON

Wigley turns to Matchmaker Makfi filly Matchmaker is attracting plenty of interest ahead of her debut at Riccarton today – and not just from punters. North Canterbury trainers Nick Wigley and Kayla Milnes produced Matchmaker for an impressive two-year-old 850m trial win at Rangiora earlier this month in easily the quickest time of the day. Bred and raced by Wigley’s son Gus and his wife Bianca, Matchmaker is out of the Fastnet Rock mare Love Somebody, a mare the Wigleys’ Inglewood Stud secured for $A28,000 in foal to Toorak Toff. Racing as Dellacqua, that mare has gone on to win five races in Australia and Nick Wigley has high hopes Matchmaker can follow in the same vein in her debut in today’s Barry Knudsen Dash (1000m). And he revealed he wasn’t the only one with a good opinion of the filly. “She was a filly who we had entered for Karaka but she didn’t pass the X-ray and we ended up keeping her. “She had a cyst on her hind leg but that doesn’t seem to be worrying her,” Nick Wigley said. “Gus has had somebody ringing him up to buy her and he’s X-rayed her which has shown the cyst has certainly improved. “There’s been a lot of interest in her but whether she’d pass the vet, we don’t know.” Wigley said Matchmaker had continued to thrive since her trial win under Samantha Wynne, who has had to forego the ride to Tina Comignaghi through suspension. “She did it pretty easily in the trial. “She just cruised up to those horses and won nicely,” Wigley said. “Sam deliberately held her back and made a race of it and she’s learned something from doing that.

M8

“Sam said she hadn’t felt a horse with gears like that for a while. “It was a heavy track at Rangiora but it wasn’t as wet as what Riccarton will be and that’s what I’m most wary of. “We have had a week of drying and this is where the two-year-old race is so we’ll take our chances. “She’ll have one run now then have a wee let up. “We think she’s a Guineas filly so we’ll give her a break and then head her in that direction.” Beyond Matchmaker, the Wigley family has plenty of reason to be upbeat heading into the new season. Bookings have been steady for Inglewood Stud stallion War Decree and stud graduates are continuing to fly the flag. “There’s been good interest for War Decree. “It’s been a bit quieter but we’d expected that and 60 mares booked in this climate would be a pretty good result and we think he’ll get that. “And the quality of mares he’s attracting has improved,” Wigley said. The Wigleys have also kept tabs on stud graduate Mystery Shot, now unbeaten in four starts, and he will be looking to keep that record intact at Caulfield on Saturday when he contests the Neds Bet Back Handicap (1400m). “He’s an interesting horse. “He was sold to Hong Kong interests (for $260,000 at Karaka in 2018) but he’s ended up in Victoria and he’s doing a good job over there. “He looks pretty exciting. “The mare (Mystique) has another one since him (Mystique Falcon, $220,000 at Karaka last year) and was a winner at Sandown last month and she’s in foal to Merchant Navy.” Tina Comignaghi gets the ride on Matchmaker at Riccarton today.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): If you worry about what you are going to say, then it will prevent you from listening to what is being said. Whatever you can do to put yourself at ease will give you an advantage. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Are you holding on to false hope? No. Hope, in and of itself, is an act of truth and light. Believe the best and hold on, white-knuckled, to that version. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Your head and your heart have not had a meeting in a while, and they will go in two different directions until you bring them into alignment through something peaceful, like meditation, dance or creative play. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Make space. Get rid of things before you have a replacement. Emptiness is not nothingness. Space is a “something” even if you don’t know what it is. Potential counts. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Assume that people are doing their very best. If they don’t act like this is the case, they may be consumed with fighting a battle you do not know about. Give the benefit of the doubt wherever possible. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It would be cool if you had a manual for this project, but all the information out there is either too plentiful or too scanty to be of use to you. Reach out to a mentor for information that’s the right size. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’re not entirely sure if the exercise you’re doing is causing you good pain or bad pain. Pain is only good if your muscles grow from it. Take a measured approach. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Things may not change immediately or even slowly, but the important thing is that they will change eventually. Never give in to cynicism. Your mind is made for beautiful thinking. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Seize every chance to extend your heart. But if you miss – if you say something you didn’t mean to or fail to hear the message inside the message – don’t worry. You’ll get another chance soon. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You won’t get that push from the world today, so you’ll have to give it to yourself. Do so in the form of an intention. Setting an intention leads to actions you wouldn’t have taken otherwise. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Acts of love make the day great. Tonight brings interesting obstacles, and you will navigate like a warrior, using everything life throws you to your advantage. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’ll thank the roadblock, as it helps you find your own path. You’ll thank the mistakes, as they are your best teachers. You’ll thank the enemy that keeps you so strong.
