Four students have been suspended and reported to police after setting off fire alarms at Ashburton College multiple times last week. During three or four incidents described by deputy principal Helen Shore Taylor as extremely disappointing, a number of senior students sitting internal assessments were disrupted along with the college’s office staff and security company. The college identified four students who admitted their responsibility, and were subsequently suspended and called to a hearing meeting with the
Board of Trustees. The college said that as the incidents were a criminal offence, police have also been involved. A full school assembly was called, where representatives from Ashburton Fire and Emergency and Ashburton Police spoke with students about the incidents. Principal Ross Preece said one of the students had admitted setting off the fire alarm just because they didn’t want to go to a class. “I think … they didn’t quite understand the gravity of the situation,” he said. The incidents did not result in callouts for Ashburton Fire and Emergency,
as the school are able to see where the alarm was triggered and check the area themselves before calling emergency services. One of last week’s incidents is believed to have been triggered by excess steam from the showers in the gym changing rooms. However, students setting off fire alarms has been an ongoing issue for Ashburton College, with several other incidents occurring last year, and many school associates taking to social media to describe their relief at the recent culprits being dealt with. Preece hopes it will not continue to be a problem for the college in the future.

District’s schools ‘missing out’ By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury’s state schools are missing out on tens of thousands of dollars as a result of Labour’s broken promises over school donations, Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon claims. Prior to the election last year, Education Minister Chris Hipkins unveiled a $70 million plan to end voluntary school donations, however, the money is nowhere to be seen in the budget announced last week, Falloon said. Under the optional scheme each school would be provided with an extra $150 per student per year if they no longer ask for voluntary donations. Data from 2016 states that only six Mid Canterbury Schools asked for less than $150 per student in voluntary donations, so the scheme would likely be to the benefit of most. The scheme was welcomed by several local principals who said they would likely consider it. However, in Parliament earlier this week, Hipkins revealed the end of school donations “did not make it up in this year’s budget”. Budget 2018 already included the biggest increase in education spending in over a decade, and the commitment to ending voluntary donations “will be considered as part of sub-
sequent budgets,” he said. “To quote Rachel Hunter, ‘it won’t happen overnight, but it will happen’,” he told parliament. But Falloon said the exclusion of the scheme from this year’s budget is “a broken promise that will cost schools in Mid Canterbury tens of thousands of dollars”. “Mr Hipkins has broken the one promise he made to schools before the election. If he couldn’t deliver it, he shouldn’t have promised it,” he said. Ashburton Borough School principal Sam Winterbourn also said the news that the $150 per student was not in the budget came as an “absolute” disappointment. “I think overall education industry could be very disappointed in the Budget. We’ve only received a 1.6 per cent increase in the operational budget, and I think schools are crying out for more help,” he said. However, Hipkins told parliament he still stood by all his promises in education, though “it will take some time to deal with the nine years of neglect we inherited”. “There’s a clear difference between a broken promise and one that is yet to be delivered upon … this Government will deliver on the promises we made.”
WHAT OUR SCHOOLS ARE MISSING OUT ON Using school websites and ERO reports to calculate approximate school rolls, Falloon estimated the funding that schools in Mid Canterbury are now “missing out on” under Budget 2018. ■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL
Slow response to review of councillor numbers By Sue NewmaN
Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
When it comes to how many councillors it should take to run the Ashburton District, early indications are that residents support cutting numbers. Only a handful of submissions have been lodged, with the majority making the case for change, from 12 to nine. Some of the reasons given for
change were: too many councillors representing a small number of people; we have councillors with agendas (usually personal) and not really thinking of the community at large; it is now often a revenue stream for themselves and not something that is being done for the wider community; a reduced number of councillors may get a teamwork atmosphere running again and be ultimately
more efficient; it will reduce the “teams” that have appeared in council. In support of the status quo submitters said: Ashburton has a diverse growing population, it needs wide representation; each councillor that we vote in, brings their own strengths and ideas, life skills and life experiences; with less councillors you run the risk of; too much similarity, minimis-
ing thinking outside the square and fair representation of all members of the community; there would be more tied votes in subcommittees and a larger workload for each councillor. Representation reviews are used to look at the best way to represent the district. This includes looking at the number of councillors and the wards they represent. Under the Local Electoral Act
2001, all councils have to review their representation arrangements at least once every six years. Ashburton’s last review was in 2012. To ensure people understand the proposed changes, the council will hold an open day in the Baring Square council chamber on June 1 from 1pm to 4pm. Submissions close at 5pm on June 18.

MPI orders ‘can be challenged’ By ColiN williSCroft
colin.w@theguardian.co.nz
Farmers are being reminded that orders they receive from the Ministry for Primary Industries covering movement restriction and the culling of cattle in relation to mycoplasma bovis can, in some circumstances, be legally challenged. Ashburton agribusiness lawyer Tim Silva, of Tavendale and Partners, said despite MPI being a government agency it is still subject to natural justice and the scrutiny of legal process, which means its decisions can be challenged by judicial review. Silva said that Tavendale and Partners had set up a dedicated team to support farmers and deal with issues and disputes that arose out of the spread of M. bovis, and although no one had yet challenged a lockdown notice by judicial review, he expects disputes over compensation will only increase as more claims are made and processed. Any claim for government compensation of more than $75,000 – a threshold that’s tiny in the context of herd value – have to be verified by Crown Law. Silva said Crown Law have an important job in terms of verifying claims and ultimately approving payment of public money. “We have no problem with that, provided that a prompt, fair and reasonable approach is taken. Every farming system is different and therefore different heads of genuine loss should be recoverable. “We want to ensure that Crown Law understands this and have access to the right resources in order to fairly handle the different farming systems and losses that may apply in different circum-
Tim Silva stances.” Silva said in real terms, a number of farmers will not know or understand the full amount of their losses until the end of the next dairy season at the earliest. That’s because there will be a different milk price, along with the likely poorer production from either a loss of animals or their replacements being inferior. He also called for more detail and full transparency about the compensation process. “This must be transparent so that farmers and those involved in claims know exactly what will be considered, what the timeframe is and detail of what can be done to expedite matters. “Ultimately, claims can be resolved by an independent arbitrator but that is an ambulance at the bottom of a cliff and will only draw out the pain between loss and compensation. On a positive note, it has been good to see some proactive input from Fonterra and DairyNZ, who are ramping up support inside the farm gate. “The next key milestone will be cabinet approval of MPI recommendations, which is due to take place on Monday. “In the meantime it’s all about Gypsy Day and getting through stock movements without risking further spread.”

Good feedback on CBD plans By Sue NewmaN
Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
The comments on plans to upgrade Ashburton’s town centre might have been wide-ranging but they had one thing in common – they were all positive. For several hours yesterday, councillor Diane Rawlinson and council staff were busy fielding inquiries and noting comments at a community open day where plans for the Ashburton CBD streetscape revitalisation were on display. “There’s been a lot of really good comments coming forward, a lot of positivity,” Rawlinson said. The revitalisation project seemed to have inspired people and there had been a good sharing of ideas. During the early hours of the open day there was a steady stream of people through the
door asking questions and making suggestions, she said. “There were quite a few different ideas coming through.” Among those spending time at the open day were Borough School students. They were keen to share their ideas and would make submissions to the district’s Youth Council. “Their ideas are great, they’re totally unfiltered and they’re good for us to hear. We’re making decisions today, but we’re making them for today’s children who’ll be using the town centre of the future. The message to everyone is that their view is important,” Rawlinson said. Ideas put forward at the open day would become part of the decision making process further down the track and they, with written submissions, will be taken on board by district
councillors when they sign off revitalisation plans. The council’s proposals give the community three options ranging from doing the bare minimum for East, Cass, Havelock, Burnett, Tancred and Moore streets through to a Rolls-Royce option. An important part of the revitalisation centres around parking, with a proposal to install more parking sensors that will monitor an extended free parking precinct. That was proving a hit with everyone, Rawlinson said. Proposed time restrictions are one hour for East, Burnett and Tancred streets, two hours free for Havelock, Cass and Moore streets and a change from free two-hour to free three-hour parking in West Street carpark. Submissions are open until June 22.

Young fans get to meet their netball idols There’s was a touch of Ashburton to the opening sequences of the ANZ Premiership netball match between the Tactix and the Stars at Horncastle Arena on Wednesday night. The two teams were led onto the court for the match by Ashburton locals, Emily Meadows and her friend, Nevaeh Gleeson. Meadows, 10, won the opportunity to get up close and personal to the players of both sides through the ANZ Future Ferns competition which selects local children to have the honour of meeting the team captains and leading both sides out to centre court at the start of a match. Meadows and Glesson spent time with Tactix captain Jane Watson and Grace Kara who leads the Stars before the match as part of the promotion. An Ashburton Borough School student, Meadows has been playing netball for six years and currently plays for the Year 6 Future Ferns side. As well as playing netball, she hopes to work with animals. Meadows had a ball at the match, made even better by the fact that the Tactix
pulled together a stunning comeback win to beat the Stars 49-48. “My favourite part was when the Tactix won the game in the final seconds, that was so awesome,” Meadows said. “My favourite player is Temalisi Fakahokotau because she can jump really high, she is fast, she smiles a lot and she is cool.” Sue McGregor, who is head of sponsorship for ANZ said they were passionate about supporting netball at all levels, from the players out there practising every weekend, to top level athletes in the ANZ Premiership. “That’s why we’re giving 94 children from across around New Zealand the chance to be a Future Captain and meet their sporting heroes at each of the ANZ Premiership matches this season,” she said. “We’re so pleased we’re able to offer this once in a lifetime opportunity to young Kiwis and hope that by offering them the chance to meet their heroes and stand on centre court at the start of the match will help inspire them to keep training hard and achieve their goals.”

Ball committee member Jaime Lamond said they have incorporated the theme via riddles, masks, footprints and picture frames throughout the venue. Back at school, the committee said excitement was running high and the ball was a topic of hot discussion. Don’t guess with cruise control BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Drivers hitting the road with cruise control are being asked to think twice. Local police are warning that setting cruise control over the speed limit can lead to serious implications down the track. A number of people are speculating the margin of tolerance granted by police before they issue a speeding ticket, or assuming that their speedo slightly overreads their speed, and setting it just above 100km per hour on the open road, Senior
Sergeant Phil Dean said. “However, if you make the conscious decision to set your cruise control above the speed limit, it’s actually the first step to criminal intent,” he said. That can become a problem if something serious was to happen, he said – for example if the driver were to cause a crash. “In that case, we’d be looking at them pretty seriously.” It is imperative to remember speed is one of the biggest killers on the road, he said.

In brief Lucky escape An Auckland man’s drive home from work took a dramatic turn on Wednesday night when a light pole came crashing down onto his car, centimetres away from crushing him. Edward McBriar, 60, was driving down Te Irirangi Dr in Botany travelling the speed limit of 70km/h at about 9pm when the incident occurred. Luckily, McBriar walked away without a scratch but his car has been written off. His wife Bronwyn McBriar said it was a lucky escape but something needed to be done to ensure it didn’t happen to anyone else. - NZME
Plane turned back A Qantas flight bound for Sydney from New Zealand has been forced to return to the airport after smoke was detected from a faulty on-board oven. QF144, which departed Auckland yesterday afternoon local time, turned around shortly after take-off and landed without incident, Qantas said in a statement. “As is standard airport procedure, emergency vehicles escorted the aircraft to the terminal,” it said. “Engineers have inspected the aircraft and identified a fault with one of the ovens in the forward galley.” - AAP

Police responded and immediately apprehended one of the alleged offenders. The two others ran off, though they were found nearby. All three were taken into custody. - NZME

■ WINTER FEED COMPETITION
Feed quality determines district’s winners By ColiN williSCroft
colin.w@theguardian.co.nz
The winning entries from the district’s three A&P associations’ winter feed competitions went head-to-head yesterday to find this season’s top winter feed crops. Twelve winners from the Ashburton, Methven and Mayfield A&P associations individual competitions came under the scrutiny of a roving team of judges before the results were announced at a special function, hosted by the Mayfield A&P Association, at Stronechrubie in Mount Somers last night. Six of the finalists were being judged on their fodder beet, three on their kale and three on their autumn saved pasture. One of the judges, Methven A&P Association president Andrew Griffiths, said crop quality was very good. “When you get to the final the calibre of the crop is always high. It’s pretty difficult to pick the winners.” He said those who did win stood out from the others because of the quality of the feed, combined with the dry matter yield. For finalist Johnny Bell, of Ruapuna, it was his first time entering the competition. He was “pretty rapt” with the quality of his Bangor fodder beet, which will mainly feed dairy

The growing season where he farms was a good one, he said. “It was really good. It was dry early on, so things were a bit of a struggle, but then we got lucky
with the rain.” Bell has about 50ha in fodder beet, another 60ha in kale and 12ha in rape. He said he entered the competition to see what other farmers were doing and
to compare his crops to theirs. Guest speaker at the prizegiving was D’Arcy Palmer, Farmers for Farm Safety company director. The results were unavailable at the time of going to press.
High demand for firewood By Sue NewmaN
Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
More firewood was delivered and it has been delivered much earlier to homes around the Ashburton District firewood merchants say. And for some, that early demand means they’re out of stocks before the worst of the winter hits. Rini Koopmans said he had been non-stop on deliveries
until the start of May and had finally caught up his backlog of orders. Demand had been early and it had been larger than normal, he said. “Last year people ran out of wood, I ran out of wood in June. This year I’ve still got dry wood but there are still a lot of orders coming in.” While demand hadn’t declined over the years, the number of sellers in the market had.
“We always have good access to wood because we do on-farm clean-ups, the whole job and we try to keep stocks cut at least a year in advance.” Adams Sawmills, supplier of slab t wood, now only has stocks of green wood and that’s unlikely to be ready to burn before the end of winter, staff member Keren Gooseman said. “That higher demand much earlier on meant we had sold
out of dry wood in February and we’re now getting some very disappointed people,” she said. The phone calls coming in from people who were still wanting wood indicated there would be a shortage for the winter, Gooseman said. Her company has not sold split wood for several years and she said there appeared to be fewer people in the market supplying wood, she said.

■ HOUSING SHORTAGE
State house sits vacant for 6 months An Auckland resident is disappointed to have watched a neighbouring Housing New Zealand home remain vacant for more than six months at a time when thousands are waiting for public housing. An older woman and her niece had been the previous tenants in the home on Mt Roskill’s McCullough Avenue, the neighbour told the Herald. Whereas the former tenants had kept beautiful roses, the garden was now overgrown with grass as high as the windows, a shopping trolley and litter left in the front yard and mail piling up. The neighbour said she was sure the previous tenants had not contaminated the two-bedroomed, duplex with methamphetamine or another chemical. Housing NZ confirmed this, saying the home had remained vacant for so long because it needed extensive remediation work to remove its garage and
strengthen it against slipping soil from a hillside. However, the neighbour remained disappointed the home could not be returned to service faster. “It is disappointing to see a good house remaining empty for so long given there are meant to be so many people waiting for public housing and we hear people are sleeping in cars,” she said. “The other thing is it is disappointing as a neighbour to see how messy the grounds are and that the lawns have been left to grow.” It comes as 1148 of Housing NZ’s 62,863 public and community housing homes across the country remained vacant as of the latest figures from March. At the same time, 4133 people are either on Auckland’s public housing waiting list or waiting to be transferred to a new property. The shortage of homes is likely to remain acute in the coming
years despite this month’s Budget pledge by the Labour-led Government to build about 800 new state homes in Auckland each year for the next four years. In the case of the McCullough Avenue home, a Housing NZ spokesman said the property had been split into two units, and tenants still lived in one unit. However, the second unit required “extensive remediation work at the back on one side”. “The garage needs to be removed and then hillside restoration and retaining needs to be done. This means this side of the property cannot be inhabited for now,” he said. “We’re investigating options for this work and we’re awaiting information.” The home was also on a “programme for garden maintenance and this is overdue”, he said. “It will be done shortly (as weather conditions permit).” - NZME
Twyford’s wings clipped Transport Minister Phil Twyford has apologised and offered his resignation to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern as Transport Minister after making a phone call on a plane. Twyford has lost responsibility for the Civil Aviation Authority after the incident on a domestic flight. Twyford made the call after the aircraft doors had shut in preparation for take-off. “I recognise that I made the call when I shouldn’t have,” he said in a statement. “This is inappropriate for anyone, but particularly inappropriate for me as Transport Minister. I apologise unreservedly.” “I have apologised to the Prime Minister and offered my resignation as Transport Minister. “She has declined my offer but chosen to transfer my responsibility for the Civil Aviation Authority to Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter. “I have referred the matter to the Civil Aviation Authority who will follow whatever processes they deem appropriate,” Twyford said. National MP Gerry Brownlee was fined $2000 for breaching airport rules when he bypassed security to board a domestic flight in 2014 while he was Transport Minister.
Phil Twyford Brownlee and two of his aides breached security at Christchurch Airport as they were running late for a flight. In his letter to the CAA director, Twyford said he wanted to draw his attention to the incident on May 17. “I believe this was in breach of the Civil Aviation Rules regarding the use of electronic devices on aeroplanes. “I apologise for this breach and understand that you will take whatever action you deem appropriate,” he said in the letter. Twyford said he was making a call to a staff member and thought it had been important at the time. “In hindsight it doesn’t excuse or justify breaking the rules.” - NZME

■ NORTH KOREA
Nuclear showdown North Korea is threatening to reconsider Kim Jong-un’s participation in a summit with President Donald Trump next month, saying that it is up to the United States to decide whether it wants to “meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown”. The punchy statement comes a day after Trump suggested that he was open to postponing or cancelling the summit, scheduled to be held in Singapore on June 12, if North Korea did not meet “certain conditions”, without elaborating. A close aide to Kim unleashed a torrent of invective against the Trump Administration yesterday, calling VicePresident Mike Pence a “political dummy” for remarks he made to Fox News on Tuesday. “As a person involved in the US affairs, I cannot suppress my surprise at such ignorant and stupid remarks gushing out from the mouth of the US Vice-President,” said Choe Son Hui, a vice-foreign minister who was previously the regime’s top official in charge of relations with the US. She is also thought to have direct access to Kim. Yesterday, just days after a North Korean broadside at national security adviser John Bolton for his mention of a “Libya model” for the denuclearisation of the North, Pence doubled down on the analogy. “As the President made clear, this will only end like the Libyan model ended if Kim Jongun doesn’t make a deal,” Pence told Fox News. Asked if this could be interpreted as a threat, Pence said:
Avril’s new boyfriend He was a boy, she was a girl – can I make it any more obvious? Oh, and he’s also a billionaire heir. Pioneering Canadian punk icon Avril Lavigne has quietly started dating Phillip Sarofim, the son of Egyptian-born Texas billionaire Fayez Sarofim, according to E! News. His mother was Mr Sarofim’s second wife, Linda Hicks, who died climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in 2000. The Hello Kitty hitmaker and her new billionaire beau have been seeing each other for three to four months. Phillip’s father is reportedly worth $US1.48 billion, and as one of five children, he is an heir to that fortune.
“Well, I think it’s more of a fact.” As preparations for the summit continue, both Bolton and Pence have touted the “Libya model”, whereby Muammar Gaddafi gave up his nuclear weapons programme in 2003 in return for sanctions relief. The North Korean regime, however, remembers what happened a few years later: Gaddafi was overthrown and brutally killed by his opponents in 2011. Choe said such comparisons betrayed Pence’s lack of knowledge. “We could surmise more
than enough what a political dummy he is as he is trying to compare the DPRK, a nuclear weapon state, to Libya that had simply installed a few items of equipment and fiddled around with them,” she said in a statement released by the North’s official Korea Central News Agency. “If he is vice-president of ‘single superpower’ as is in name, it will be proper for him to know even a little bit about the current state of global affairs and to sense to a certain degree the trends in dialogue and the climate of détente,” she said.
If the United States “offends against our goodwill and clings to unlawful and outrageous acts”, Choe said she would suggest that Kim reconsider attending the Singapore summit. “We will neither beg the US for dialogue nor take the trouble to persuade them if they do not want to sit together with us,” she said, returning to military threats. “Whether the US will meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown is entirely dependent upon the decision ... of the US.” - WP

Funeral car ticketed while hearse loading A “cowardly” traffic warden has been criticised for issuing a parking ticket to a funeral car as the driver was loading a body into an accompanying hearse, reports the Daily Mail. George Portsmouth, 30, took pictures of the car being ticketed at North Cumbria University Hospital in Carlisle – before the warden is said to have run away. The attendant allegedly watched the cortege car accompany the hearse into the hospital grounds, before waiting for both drivers to disappear inside the building. Portsmouth claimed the warden from Coventry-based company UK Parking Control (UKPC) then placed a ticket on the window and swiftly moved away.
Pictures show the cortege driver, who Portsmouth believes was a fellow undertaker, return to find the ticket and show it to the hearse driver in disbelief. HGV driver Portsmouth said: “It was obvious what that car was there for. “I saw the warden was watching what they were doing and the second they went inside he rushed and put the ticket on the cortege car and ran off. “He wasn’t walking, he was running. He’s seen them come in and waited until they were out of sight before he ticketed them. “He must have known what they were doing. “Some of these car parking wardens can be quite ruthless
and careless. It was bad form.” The funeral car was accompanying a hearse and both vehicles had originally parked close to the hospital building at 2pm on Monday. However, Portsmouth said the undertaker then decided to move the car a few feet away from the hearse before both drivers walked into the hospital. A UKPC warden had been inspecting vehicles in the hospital car park before the two funeral cars arrived. Portsmouth claimed the warden watched the two cars park and the drivers disappear inside the building before he placed a ticket on the window of the cortege car. The warden stuck the bright yellow ticket on the wind-
screen of the cortege car and took a picture of the number plate. Portsmouth claimed that when the undertaker returned around 10 minutes later, he saw the ticket and looked at it in disbelief. The man then walked over and showed it to the hearse driver and the shocked pair discussed the ticket before they both drove off. In 2015, UKPC was disciplined by the British Parking Association after some of its staff altered photographic evidence to unfairly impose parking charges. Then last month it emerged that UKPC, which had a turnover of £11.6 million last year, had been suspended by the DVLA while it investigates concerns. - DM
Pitt protecting Paltrow Gwyneth Paltrow shared new details about the night that her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt confronted Harvey Weinstein for sexually harassing her, during an interview on Sirius XM’s The Howard Stern Show. The actress said that the pair were at the opening night of Hamlet on Broadway in 1995 when Pitt saw Weinstein, and sprang into action. Paltrow said that Pitt threw Weinstein against a wall and said: “If you ever make her feel uncomfortable again, I’ll kill you.” She also noted that Pitt is “the best” for doing that for her when she did not have fame or power.
First rap triple album Post Malone had 18 of them. Migos had 24. Chris Brown recently released one with 45 songs, and even he didn’t have the gall to call it a triple album. But Rae Sremmurd has the gall. Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee have all the gall. And the Mississippi brothers put all that gall on display on SR3MM, rap’s first triple album, a blockbuster effort that clocks in with 27 tracks and is nearly two hours in length. It’s designed to be blasted from a very expensive car stereo.

Buying a PROPERTY WITH TREES Whoever said ‘the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago’ obviously never dealt with overhanging branches, wayward roots or grumpy neighbours. As anyone who lives in a leafy area will tell you, trees can cause no end of bother. Trees can block views, damage fences and interfere with power lines. Roots can disrupt pipes, branches can reduce sunlight availability, leaves can block gutters and windfall fruit can attract rodents. It’s a wonder people ever plant them! These problems are often caused by well-meaning property owners who plant trees without thinking about how big they will grow. By the time a tree is well-established, it may be already wreaking havoc both overhead and underground. Overhanging branches may present obvious hassles, but tree roots are usually out of sight, out of mind until they start snaking their way into retaining walls, foundations or drains (at which point they become difficult to ignore and expensive to re-route). If you own a property, you are allowed to do whatever you like to your trees, within the bounds of the law that says you have the right to the ordinary use and
enjoyment of your land. This is subject to any protection that may apply to your trees. If they’re protected (for example, because they are historic, considered to be significant or needed to prevent erosion), you may need to get resource consent before doing anything to them. Remember that you can’t unreasonably interfere with your neighbours’ use and enjoyment of their land, which means that you can’t let your trees become a problem at their place (and vice versa). If your neighbours have trees that are giving you grief, think carefully before swinging an axe or chainsaw. Legally, you are entitled to trim any branches or roots from a tree (or large shrub, or plant) that encroach on your property unless they are protected, in which case you may need resource consent first. However, for the sake of being a decent human being, it’s a good idea to talk to the tree’s owners first. Don’t be tempted to take matters into your own hands and poison the tree, or trespass onto a neighbour’s property to chop parts of it off. One way to resolve the situation is to seek advice from a professional arborist. Getting an expert to prune the tree in a way that doesn’t destroy it completely will be far cheaper than engaging a lawyer.
In the worst-case scenario, if you can’t sort out tree issues with a chat over the fence or the aid of an arborist, it may be time to seek help from the Disputes Tribunal or the District Court. If the trees are causing a nuisance, such as blocking views and/ or light, and you’re unable to come to an agreement with the neighbour, you can apply to the District Court for an order to get the neighbour to trim or remove the tree. A new driving experience T he latest reliable workhorse to drive out of the Nissan garage is a vehicle that’s designed to tackle back-country farm tracks, country roads and city streets with equal ease. The Nissan Navara is equipped for the toughest terrain with enhanced off-roading abilities, but at the same time it has a new level of car-like refinement, style, comfort and quality. Nissan New Zealand’s Managing Director John Manley says that improving refinement and delivering a crossover-style driving experience was a key element of the Navara’s development. To help achieve this without compromising the vehicle’s off-road ability, Nissan has designed an all-new five-link rear suspension system for the double cab, providing significantly enhanced ride comfort and improved handling on and off-road. There’s an impressive array of new customer technology including the very latest in performance, safety, technology, comfort and convenience features which, coupled with efficient running costs, make the Navara well suited for both work and leisure. The Around View Monitor is a popular feature of Nissan’s crossover vehicles and unique to the Navara in the ute market. Further safety and convenience features include cruise control, keyless entry and parking sensors.
Knowing that ute owners need their vehicles to earn their keep, the Navara’s load-carrying and towing ability across the range is better than ever. With payload ratings in excess of one tonne across the range and an impressive towing capacity of up to 3500kg, the Navara is ready for the toughest and most demanding of jobs or leisure pursuits.
Tackling hilly terrain? Now you can do it with more confidence and control. On an incline, Hill Start Assist is able to help keep you from rolling backwards when you’re accelerating up a hill from a stop. And Hill Descent Control helps you maintain a steady speed and braking,
so you can get down a steep grade more safely. The Nissan Navara also has a host of safety features standard across the range: seven airbags including driver knee airbag, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

On a Mystery mission
I
t’s one of the most highly anticipated sports cars of the decade, and it’s coming to New Zealand next month. Sort of ... As part of this morning’s Fieldays announcement, Toyota New Zealand have confirmed that the manufacturer’s FT-1 concept car will be part of their display at the Mystery Creek event. “The FT-1 has travelled the world, and now it’s our turn to showcase our commitment to fun to drive cars with stunning design and performance,” says
Neeraj Lala, Toyota New Zealand’s General Manager of New Vehicle Sales. “The Supra is going to continue re-igniting the passion for exciting performance cars that was started by the 86 coupe.” The FT-1 was first unveiled in 2014, and though we didn’t know it for sure at the time, most quickly drew similarities between it and the Supra of old. It wasn’t until a few years later that Toyota’s Global Chief Engineer, Tetsuya Tada, said he would like to see the ‘Supra’ nameplate return to the Toyota line-up.
Fast forward to 2018, and while we’re still waiting on a proper Supra announcement (let alone a concept car), things are approaching a head. In March Toyota whipped the covers off the Gazoo Racing Supra Concept, which remains our best interpretation of what the road-going sports car will actually look like. It’s expected that the production-model Supra will land in New Zealand in 2019. Fieldays takes place from June 13 to June 16.

Best-seller for a reason
I
t’s back to the future time today! For its 1996 and I well remember my first drive of the then, new to NZ, Outback. It was early spring, the Mount Hutt ski-field road was open, but with light snow on the upper reaches and a covering of around 10cm on the then completely empty car park. All in all a rather fine setting to experience this new Outback, and to test the advantages of the then quite unique Boschdeveloped, ABS braking system. Which as was the case with the also standard air-conditioning, was at that time still mostly only found in high priced, luxury vehicles. My story of that day shows that “we (much younger versions of the writer and Graham Kennedy) were somewhat proactive in testing both the ABS and all-wheeldrive capability, both in the snow covered car-park and on the descent”. Pretty advanced stuff as the ABS was then for Subaru, I suggest that in those days no-one could have predicted that now, twenty or so years later, that the Outback’s standard gear would include the excellent, camera-based EyeSight preventative safety system technology with its array of driver assist features, including adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking control, lane keep assist/departure warning and more. Not forgetting the suite of vision assist
(front and side view monitors/cameras) features, sat-nav, responsive steering, adaptive LED headlights and more that the Premium models have. All of which I have both experienced, and appreciated in recent times, including collecting a new (with just 20km on the odometer) 2.5i Premium for one of the family from Queenstown for delivery to Ashburton. Then very recently driving some 600km in each of the both recently further enhanced 2.5i and 3.6R Premium models. These days the Outback range is Subaru NZ’s best seller. For those not familiar with them, they can perhaps be described as a larger (it’s 4.8 metres long) high-riding (213 mm ground clearance) five-seat station wagon with constant all-wheel-drive and an X factor for off the beaten track. There’s a three model range – two in either Sport or Premium specification with the four cylinder, 129kW/235Nm, 2.5-litre Boxer petrol and revised , very smooth seven-step Lineatronic CVT. The third of course being the 3.6R Premium, also with a Boxer engine, but in its case a very quiet and suitably powerful 3.6-litre six cylinder petrol engine, delivering 191kW and 350Nm of torque. While it has a six rather seven-step CVT it has an extra Sport driving mode for quickest possible responses. Both engines are surprisingly frugal
Roger Hart ROAD TEST
fuel wise, the claimed overall figures being just 7.3L/100km for the 2.5-litre and 9.9L/100km for the 3.6R, the latter which can be easily bettered a during open road cruising. Exterior enhancements for each include a new grille, front bumper and different 18 inch alloy wheels. Tweaks to the spacious interior include a larger, tablet-type centre console. The Outback’s enviable reputation for their ride quality and handling continues with these latest models. Their long travel suspension soaks up bumps, pot holes and corrugations, irrespective of the road, or indeed track surfaces. As well this and the benefits of the combination of directional steering, the allwheel drive system and Bridgestone tyres (they’re quiet on rough seal with very good grip in slippery conditions) really show on loose surfaces and shingle. Then of course for rougher roads and tracks selecting the driver activated X-
mode means one can get to places beyond where most people will be comfortable going, or getting back from, so for the return trip the hill descent control will likely be a blessing! I’ve not driven the 2.5i Sport, but as are its Premium siblings, it is very well set up with safety gear and driver-aids.

Kona covers the night trial with ease
D
uring the recent Ashburton Car Club’s Suzie Morrison Memorial night trial we and the sharp-looking Kona covered a lot more of the countryside than the instructions intended. Lets do it without the help of Google maps, we had decided from the start. And did well until about halfway, when we missed a crucial roadside instruction sign. So lots of additional gravel roads were driven in pouring rain. Which however gave us the unexpected opportunity of appreciating just how well behaved, and predictable the frontwheel-drive Kona was in these conditions (previous experiences having been with the all-wheel-drive 1.6 Turbo version). As well, the bright headlights and comfort of the heated front seats were a definite bonus! Colleen and Steven Pinfold won the night trial. We came 15th, so there’s plenty of scope for Gretchen the navigator, and I to improve our placing next year. Maybe we will even invite Bernard Egan to control a spotlight! The Kona Elite as driven, which was always very easy to find, and particularly so in crowded car-parks costs $36,990 + ORCs. Other Kona are priced from $31,990 + ORCs.

Bentley goes super hi-tech D riving the all-new Bentley Continental GT revealed this luxurious Grand Tourer to be a well-crafted bundle of contradictions. Now into its third generation, the Bentley Continental GT is at once everything you’re expecting it to be, and also everything you’re not. It’s something of a contradictory car. It literally wears its heart on its sleeve; especially in stonking W12 format (and more on this all-new engine in a bit), the Conti GT is every bit the Grand Toure designed to get its affluent enthusiast owners from one side of continental Europe (and other places) to the other in style and have them exit the car at journey’s end with a smile on their face and nary a crinkle in their polo shirt. That it’ll jet its way across endless land masses at pace if required is also a given. The Conti GT has never been short on power, and the 467kW/900Nm mix on offer in the new one, assisted by two twin-scroll turbochargers, make this two-plus ton machine fairly fly, as experienced along the Autostrada in Italy and the Autobahn in Austria during the model’s international media launch last week. Huge sections of the GT are hand-crafted, and that’s no marketing hyperbole; I really do mean “made by hand”. The diamond quilting in the seats and door lining involves precisely 310,675 stitches per car. Detailing inside the LED matrix headlights and the knurling on the metal dials and instrumentation is all influenced by the diamond shapes in cut-crystal glassware. This all sounds very Bentley-like so far. So, where’s the contradiction? All this gentlemanly power, all this traditional elegance. And yet, the Bentley Continental GT is secretly a super high-tech car. Just as the 10sq m of wood veneer inlay in every single car is sustainably sourced
and carefully fitted by hand, just as every car features 2.8km of stitching thread, there are also more lines of software code in the Continental GT than in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (more than 100,000,000 to be not exact). The back-rear section of the car – incorporating those deep haunches behind the door apertures that give it its signature hunkered-down stance – is presently the largest single super-formed piece of sheet metal in all of automotive manufacturing. That is quite an engineering achievement, as are the new GT’s enormous brakes, which are the biggest iron brake assemblies used on any production car and consist of 420mm front discs with 10 piston calipers and 380mm rear discs with four piston calipers. No ceramics? Bentley states it doesn’t need to bother when its iron engineering remains so solid and consistent. Inside the cabin, a wide touchscreen
(the same as featured in the new Porsche Panamera, reminding for a moment of Bentley’s parentage these days) sits inside a rotating section of dashboard. At the push of a button, the high-tech 12.3-inch display (left) rotates away to reveal traditional analogue gauges or a blank facia extending the trad-look veneer. This component took two years of development work to perfect and features more than 40 parts, including two motors with individual high-precision gearboxes and cooling fans. It’s a little piece of theatre that reminds you James Bond started life in Ian Fleming’s novels driving a Bentley. But when you think about it, the Bentley Rotating Display section is perhaps the perfect embodiment of Bentley in 2018. New technology incorporated with no compromise to traditional materials or attention to detail. The level of detail is unbelievable. More so than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class,
Maserati GranTurismo or anything else in its class. Underneath the Continental GT’s sleek skin there is even more new technology. Bentley has developed a new engine, there is also a new gearbox, new suspension system and new Dynamic Ride active roll-control technology present as well. An updated version of Bentley’s gargantuan 6-litre twin-turbocharged W12 TSI is paired for the first time with an eightspeed double-clutch ZF gearbox. The engine features cylinder deactivation technology so, when at high speed and low revs on the highway, six of the 12 cylinders will shut down, helping the luxury brand achieve better fuel efficiency. It feels grippy and flat through corners, and always with the ability to power out and on to the next curve, thanks to all 900Nm of torque being available from just 1350rpm with those new turbos constantly primed.
M Sport Package suits NSW police just fine
T
he BMW Group Australia is proud to announce a further extension of its relationship with Australian law enforcement agencies, with the supply of authority specification BMW 530ds to the New South Wales Police Force. “Globally, the BMW Group supplies emergency and authority vehicles to a large number of countries, so I am very pleased to see our brand continue this proud tradition in Australia,” said BMW Group Australia CEO, Marc Werner. “We are honoured by our association with the New South Wales Police Force and delighted that our officers will be driving BMW’s safe, efficient and dynamically superior vehicles.” The 530ds will be supplied in a specific authority specification, a variant chosen for its powerful, efficient performance. These vehicles are fitted as standard with the M Sport Package for enhanced dynamics, as well as the M Sport Brake system for additional stopping power. To ensure police remain supported during service, multi-adjustable Comfort seats are also fitted. Popular options, such as a sun roof, are not provided as part of this package, enabling the 530d to be specified with additional authority-specification equipment (such as lighting and sirens) as dictated by service requirements.

OUR VIEW
Childish behaviour unacceptable T
here’s a fair amount of irony in the role the right honourable Trevor Mallard is playing at the moment. Like the nasty school teacher who you never liked but had to respect because of their position within the school, Mallard now quite happily, it seems, holds the role of judge, jury and executioner in the chambers of parliament. And he’s certainly made sure everyone knows who is the boss this week. But is anyone getting a little sick of the behaviour coming out of the beehive? These people are there as elected members to represent us as a country and it seems as though they can’t manage to hold one of their get-togethers with-
out someone over stepping the mark or someone behaving like a spoilt brat. Conversations tend to be a bit more like what Home Economics class back in Year 9 was like. Someone would say something they probably shouldn’t have said and next minute there was a full-blown food fight with anything and everything open for departure from one’s hands. And then there’s the Mallard,
sitting at the head of the room – smirk at the ready, casually glancing his way around the room before choosing his next item of prey before descending upon them. What is ironic about it is that during his time where he was just a face amongst the arguing crowd while in parliament, Mallard himself was renowned for the odd dummy-spit and on more than one occasion he was sent from his seat like the naughty school child and kicked outside to think about his actions. Perhaps this assertion of dominance he is showing at the moment might be to try and stamp out any further problems that might unfold down the track – but if things keep going the way
for the nation’s hungry and homeless. Ten years ago: NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander arrived on the Red Planet to begin searching for evidence of water; the spacecraft confirmed the presence of water ice at its landing site. Five years ago: Making his first official trip to sub-Saharan Africa, US Secretary of State John Kerry demanded that Nigeria respect human rights as it cracked down on Islamist extremists and pledged to work hard in the coming months to
ease tensions between Sudan and South Sudan. One year ago: Surrounded by stone-faced allies, President Donald Trump rebuked fellow NATO members for failing to meet the military alliance’s financial benchmarks. Today’s birthdays: Actress Ann Robinson is 89. Former White House news secretary Ron Nessen is 84. Actor Sir Ian McKellen is 79. Actress-singer Leslie Uggams is 75. Movie director and Muppeteer Frank Oz is 74. Actress Karen Valentine

they are at the moment, we’re not far away from switching into Parliament TV and seeing Mallard sitting there talking and debating with himself because he’s got no one left in front of him. Maybe there is a better solution though. Paula Bennett is famous for her efforts in making bacon and egg pies, so while she’s banished from the chambers perhaps she could whip up a few dozen to share around the room the next time they meet. That way perhaps more politicians might have their mouths full and actually have to stop and think before they open their mouths and say something that they, and we, as a country, would probably rather forget.
Either way something needs to change. We need the leaders of our country to stop acting like the spoilt child of the family who gets what they want every time they stamp their feet and start acting a bit more like leaders. They are supposed to all be there for the betterment of this country, but at the moment all they seem intent on achieving is throwing eggs at each other across the room. Healthy debate is fantastic – borderline manic type rants on the other hand leave a lot to be desired. And that job sits on the shoulder of Mallard. TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Friday, May 25, the 145th day of 2018. There are 220 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On May 25, 1968, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis was dedicated by Vice-President Hubert Humphrey and Interior Secretary Stewart Udall. On this date: In 1521, Martin Luther was branded a heretic and had his writings banned by the Edict of Worms because of his religious beliefs. IIn 1810, Argentina began its revolt against Spanish rule with the forming of the Primera Junta in Buenos Aires. In 1916, the Chicago Tribune published an interview with Henry Ford in which the automobile industrialist was quoted as saying, “History is more or less bunk.” In 1935, Babe Ruth hit his last three career home runs — nos. 712, 713 and 714 — for the Boston Braves in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. (The Pirates won, 11-7.) In 1942, US Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Stilwell, frustrated over being driven out of Burma by Japanese forces during World War Two, told reporters in Delhi, India: “I claim we got a hell of a beating.” In 1961, President John F. Kennedy told Congress: “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” In 1979, 273 people died when an American Airlines DC-10 crashed just after takeoff from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Six-year-old Etan Patz disappeared while on his way to a school bus stop in lower Manhattan. (In April 2017, former store clerk Pedro Hernandez, convicted of killing Etan, was sentenced to at least 25 years in prison.) In 1986, an estimated 7 million Americans participated in Hands Across America to raise money

had the pleasure of talking to a local Ladies Friendship group on Wednesday morning. I find it much easier to do these talks without a speech written out or in fact any notes at all. I think the stories flow a bit better for me when I’m not constantly checking my notes in case I’ve missed things. My lovely Aunty Bev was in the crowd so I had to be a bit careful about the creative licence I sometimes employ with some of the childhood stories. I have been known to not let the exact facts get in the way of a good story in the past. My overall plan with these chats is to share my journey of growing up in Mid Canterbury and how it led me to being an announcer at the local radio station. While hoping that most of them stay awake. I try and get some laughs early and I think that helps to keep the eyelids apart. Tap dancing stories are always good for a giggle especially the old classic story about brother Mark and football. I’m sure I’ve mentioned it several times already in this column, but I know how much it makes him cringe whenever it’s talked about, so that’s reason enough to relive it again. The story goes ... Mark had to rush to Saturday morning soccer straight from performing at a tap dancing competition. Apparently, there was no time to remove all the make-up that Mother had trowled on for

I would like to bring to readers’ attentions a situation that is occurring in Canterbury that may/ could cost someone their life. Incorrect and/or illegal parking. While I believe parking on the opposite side of the road in England is okay, in New Zealand it isn’t legal. I believe the fines for incorrect parking are $60 plus and you can also be fined for dangerous driving as you have to drive your car on the wrong side of the road. I don’t know the demerit points that go with those fines. On one weekend I drove from Temuka to Christchurch and then back again and counted 53 vehicles incorrectly parked.

the competition and this poor 8-year-old boy had to take the field with red cheeks, bright blue eyeshadow, eyeliner and ruby red lipstick. Not only did Mark’s team refuse to pass the ball to him during the game, they also ostracised him at halftime and he had to pretty much stand by himself and scoff into an orange quarter. Mother clearly wanted a little girl and caking our faces with half a whale and sending us out on stage was the closest she would ever get. I’m sure that there was more than enough time to remove his make-up before that game started but Mother just hadn’t quite had her fix of Mark/Melanie. Working in Record World gets a mention as that dream job for a teenage boy was where my love for music was enhanced further. My couple of years in Scotland relates back nicely to getting up at 4am in the middle of winter and how, after living in the highlands, it’s not that bad here really. The example of it starting to snow, heavily, when I was playing cricket one summer’s day in Aberdeen, backed this up. PO Box 77 I have written to the police and the rental car association and had no replies. I have even seen a policeman drive away from his station with a motor home parked incorrectly right outside. I have spoken to some drivers – my comments all starting with Welcome to New Zealand and all were not aware that it was illegal/ incorrect in New Zealand. I have even seen a vehicle parked incorrectly on Stafford Street in Timaru by locals. To tell tourists to drive on the left is correct but to park left isn’t too much to ask surely. In Geraldine on Easter Monday in the middle of town beside the camping ground at 1.30pm there were seven motorhomes, three
caravans/cars and one bus all parked on the wrong side. A lot of pedestrians looked but none appeared to approach any of the drivers. So, nothing happens, or do we wait until someone is injured or worse. Brian Giles
Access to justice The Budget increases funding to the system that dispenses justice to our citizens. Agencies which provide support to victims of crime receive additional operational funding, Youth Justice receives increased funding, and Community Law Centres receive a 20 per cent increase in funding to assist them to provide people with legal advice.
Access to justice is important for all New Zealanders, and Community Law Centres help 50,000 people with limited income each year. The Independent Police Conduct Authority, and the Court, also receive increased income to assist them to cope with increasing demand. We are fortunate to live in a society based on the Rule of Law, and it is important the systems that support the administration of justice are properly funded. The former National coalition Government refused to increase funding for these community agencies during its nine years in office, preferring to offer tax cuts to the already wealthy rather than support its less wealthy citizens. ■ PIPELINE STOUSH
Air NZ sues BP, Z Energy By Grant Bradley Air New Zealand is taking court action against BP and Z Energy over the cut in jet fuel supply after the rupture of Refining NZ’s pipeline last year. The airline has started proceedings against its fuel suppliers in the High Court at Auckland after the disruption which it said cost it millions of dollars as flights were cancelled or diverted to other airports to refuel. While Air New Zealand was hardest hit, other airlines also had to take costly action to keep flying as fuel supplies were cut at the country’s busiest airport. A Z Energy spokeswoman said her company had received a statement of claim from Air New Zealand for about $4.3 million. Z would be defending the claim and, as the matter was before the court, she could not comment further. A BP spokeswoman had a similar response. “BP strongly denies Air New
Zealand’s claim and will be defending the proceedings,’’ she said. “As this matter is now before the court, it is not appropriate to comment further at this time.’’ Air New Zealand is not commenting on the preliminary proceedings which started yesterday. It could be next year before the case is heard. In September the 170km refinery-to-Auckland pipeline on farmland near Marsden Point was ruptured. Airlines were hardest hit as the pipeline carries nearly all of

New Zealand’s economy is past its prime and is now “over the hill” according to Westpac’s chief economist. But far from knocking on death’s door Dominick Stephens says the economy is ageing gracefully. “At seven years old, New Zealand’s economic expansion is now entering its mature phase. Two years ago the economy was really in its prime, but now the economic cycle is over the hill.” - NZME
Dotcom reveals hideout Silicon Valley millionaires are increasingly buying up land in Queenstown to prepare for a doomsday event, New Zealand’s own resident web mogul says. But whether that could boost the country’s technology industry is yet to be determined. Controversial multimillionaire Kim Dotcom recently set up home in the resort, making the move from Auckland with new wife Liz. In his first interview since the shift, he said he was not the only one moving in. He knew “about a dozen people from Silicon Valley that have homes in Queenstown that haven’t even been on the radar, not been in the media at all, and that number is just increasing”. - NZME

Auckland’s aviation fuel. Flights were disrupted or cancelled for about 10 days until the pipeline was repaired. Air New Zealand chief executive Christopher Luxon said after the cut the airline would look at ways of recouping its losses. Refining NZ – which is partowned by the oil companies at the centre of the court action – runs the pipeline and took an $8m hit to its profit. Auckland Airport last year estimated the impact of the loss of business was in the “low hundreds of thousands of dollars”
and would be covered by business interruption insurance. During the crisis some other airlines had to divert to other airports or tanker in fuel to Auckland in other aircraft. The Board of Airline Representatives yesterday said each individual airline would make their own decision on any legal action based on their commercial contracts with their suppliers. Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods has said there would be an inquiry into the pipeline failure and into ways of making fuel supply to the airport more resilient. Two digger drivers were interviewed about working at the Ruakaka site at the time, but neither could recall working near the pipeline. Northland Regional Council said early this year the fuel leak – estimated at 124 cubic metres – was a breach of the Resource Management Act but the council “does not have a case for prosecution”. - NZME

NZX share prices take a hit
I
t was another busy week on the corporate front in both New Zealand and Australia, as the local reporting season ramped up. After reaching a record high last week, the NZX 50 met weakness at the start of the week after a number of results dragged on the index. Comvita advised the market that its discussions with an unknown third party are now at an end after they couldn’t agree on a price. Comvita’s Director’s unanimously agreed to withdraw from the process. The share price is at a nine-month low and has retreated 30 per cent this year. A2 Milk’s full year 2018 revenue and margin guidance fell short of the market’s high expectations. The company saw selling pressure in subsequent days, however, started to see some respite of late as value begins to emerge following the recent period of weakness. Fonterra announced it has increased its 2017/18 forecast Farmgate Milk Price by 20 cents to $6.75, thanks to improved farming conditions in March and April after a challenging spring and summer. The company also announced its opening forecast for the 2018/19 season at $7.00. However, the company downgraded its earnings guidance for the full year on the back of lower than expected volumes and higher input costs. The company has cut its dividend guidance for the full year to 15-20 cents per share down from 25-30 cents.
Jeremy Flood ON THE MARKETS
The share price tumbled 6.79 per cent. On Wednesday, Steel and Tube downgraded their earnings guidance for the full year and announced that it had breached a debt covenant. A decision on the payment of a final dividend for FY18 will be made in line with the company’s dividend policy, however the dividend is at risk. The share price dropped 18.18 per cent. Meanwhile, the month of April saw annual net migration down from its high point a year ago, mainly because more non-New Zealand citizens are leaving the country. New Zealand saw 67,000 net migrants for the April year, lower than the net migration of 71,900 a year early. The gain for April was made up of 130,500 migrant arrivals and 63,400 departures. The number of arrivals increased, therefore it was a larger increase in departures that drove the migration level down. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump told reporters he wasn’t happy with the progress of US China trade talks and hinted that his summit with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un may not go ahead as planned.
The Federal Reserve’s minutes from its May monetary-policy meeting showed that officials were planning to raise interest rates for a second time this year in June, confirming market expectations. However the increase in rates could bring more pain for emerging markets. The Fed is moving closer to ending its ‘accommodative’ strategy of helping the US economy with low interest rates and after six increases in interest rates since 2016, and at least two more expected this year, the central bank could reach what is considered a neutral level. In Italy, political turmoil is adding to the euro’s plight after Giuseppe Conte, 53, was named as Italy’s new Prime Minister. However, plans of a coalition between the anti-establishment 5-Star and the far-right League to form a government seemed to stall, after President Sergio Mattrella sought further consultations over their proposed Prime Minister. Conte is a political novice and is relatively unknown in Italian politics. Investors cast doubt over the coalition, after announcing big spending plans, which have spooked markets, as Italian bond yields are at their highest in more than a year. In brief
■ EXPANDING HORIZONS
Dexter heading stateside By Michael Guerin Champion harness driver Dexter Dunn is set to try and establish himself in North America again. And he hasn’t ruled out a permanent move there should his winter campaign prove an enormous success. Dunn has won the last 10 national drivers’ premierships but will relinquish his title to good friend Blair Orange this season, with the latter 28 clear on the premiership after bringing up win 200 for the season at Manawatu on Tuesday. Orange’s numbers this season have been so staggering he now has Dunn’s national record 229 wins for a season in his sights and barring injury or suspension should probably set a new mark. But Dunn says the end of his premiership domination isn’t why he is heading to New York in a few weeks. “I spent a few months up there driving a few years ago and really enjoyed the experience and always wanted to come back,” says Dunn. “But the right opportunity never really presented itself until now.” That finally did come when Kiwi trainer Chris Ryder, who is now based in North America, approached Dunn about driving in the US with his support. “Chris has been a long time family friend and suggested the time was right and he would support me and try and help me get outside drives. “There has been a bit of visa paperwork to get through and I still have to go for a final interview at the US consulate in Auckland in a few weeks but if and when the paperwork is finalised hopefully I can get up there sooner rather than later. “Their (US) really good horses,
Dexter Dunn says the time is right to test out the waters in the lucrative United States racing arena. the ones that will be racing in the better races later in the summer, are all starting to come out in the qualifiers at the moment so I’d love to be able to get some serious drives and the sooner I am there the more likely that is to happen.”
Dunn expects to be away from New Zealand from around midJune until maybe just before the New Zealand Cup carnival in November, which would mean he could drive at the rich Breeders Crown on October 27, but if the trip was an enormous success he
could be tempted to stay there. “I intend being back for the Cup carnival and driving like normal here over the summer. “But you never know what can happen. “Anything is possible, including basing myself up there full time. “But I don’t expect that to happen on this trip.” After 10 remarkable years during which Dunn has emerged from total obscurity to win 10 premierships and win 2180 races in New Zealand alone, the superstar of the sulky admits the time for a new challenge is come. “I still love the big carnivals, our summer racing and some of the special days we have like Kaikoura for example. “But you do have the odd time when driving so much gets stale, especially when you have been travelling as much as I have for the last five years. “It usually only lasts a weekend and you are back fine the next week, but it does happen. “So this will be a good freshen up for me, a new challenge and a chance to learn some new things.” While Dunn has already seen his premiership run ended by Orange this season any longer-term North American ambitions from Dunn would put Orange in the perfect position to start his own premiership domination. The pair are so far in front of their rivals in numbers of drives and races won in the last couple of years it would be hard to envision a new serious premiership contender emerging. So if Dunn tastes success during his upcoming US trip and decides to spend more winters there in the years to come, the national premiership would appear to be Orange’s to own. - HRNZ
■ WINGATUI
Winter feature on Shakti’s programme Jo-Ann Gordon has a stakes target in mind for the versatile and in-form Shakti. “I think I might get him ready for the Winter Cup,” the Ascot Park trainer said. “He can run from 1400 to 2200m and after Ashburton there aren’t any staying races left so I’ll drop him back and 1600m at Riccarton on a heavy track wouldn’t worry him.” Shakti was a sprint winner three runs back and the son of Duelled has subsequently added an open middle distance victory to his record, the eighth success of his career. Meanwhile, Gordon will have two representatives at the Otago meeting running at Wingatui today. The Young Pretenda will contest the Balmoral Estate Residential Sections Outram

Handicap (2200m) while Rock Solid runs in the List With Ray & Alison Kean of Southern Real Estate Handicap (2200m). “I’d be disappointed if The Young Pretenda didn’t run well,” Gordon said. “They often go well on the flat after racing over hurdles.” The eight-year-old has already successfully mixed his roles with a Rating 65 win on the flat three runs back and last time out the gelding was a maiden hurdle winner. Rock Solid was anything but that at her most recent appearance at Ascot Park where she tailed the field home. “I don’t know what happened there – hopefully it was just the sticky track as she’d gone well at Riverton the start before after getting knocked over,” Gordon said. - NZME
New French sire En Solitaire, a son of French siring phenomenon Ready Cash, will be available fresh to breeders in both Australia and New Zealand next season. Haras des Trotteurs and Yabby Dam Farms will stand him at their Ballarat Stud after principal Pat Driscoll purchased a 50 per cent stake in the horse with Jean Pierre Dubois, who also stands Love You. In a twist, the previously injured four-year-old will return to training, this time with Anton Golino, with a view to tackling feature racing in Australasia. - NZME
Butt spending up Sydney-based New Zealand trainer Tim Butt has flexed his muscles, buying a couple of unraced prospects from his homeland. Canterbury three-year-old trotter Majestic Courtney left Christchurch on Wednesday after being purchased by clients of Butt last week. He had impressed in trials and workouts for trainer Robert Anderson, who prepared the son of Majestic Son for his North Canterbury breeder, Mike Stevens. Butt has already taken possession of a promising two-year-old colt out of Steve Telfer’s Ardmore stable in Auckland. - NZME
Kiwi trainer in Sweden Melbourne-based New Zealand trainer Brent Lilley is in Sweden, about to tackle Sunday’s $950,000 Elitloppet in Stockholm, Sweden. Lilley, who left Christchurch in 2010 and now ranks amongst Victoria’s leading trainers, has travelled to Scandinavia with Maori Time, an Australian-bred trotting mare. The heats and final series, on which Victoria’s Great Southern Star was originally modelled, will feature some of world trotting’s biggest names. Previous New Zealand-trained Elitloppet contestants have included Pride Of Petite (1996), Special Force (1999) and Lyell Creek (2001). - NZME
Marsh in the dark Stephen Marsh isn’t quite sure what to expect of his two-year-olds who are chasing black type honours at Pukekohe Park on Saturday. The Cambridge trainer has Sol Invictus and Van Irving in the Listed Ssangyong Auckland Futurity Stakes and the prospect of a Heavy 11 track has left him guessing as to the outcome. “It was bottomless there for the last meeting and it might be worse this time, I don’t really know how they’ll handle it,” Marsh said. - NZME
Richardson happy
Shakti may well be sighted at Riccarton in the Winter Cup.
Volpe Veloce’s quest for a Group One victory in Queensland to go with her domestic success at the top level is all going to plan. Cotrainer Graham Richardson said the stable star had travelled well to Brisbane and was in grand order for her Australian debut at Doomben. “We’re very happy with her, she’s well in herself and looking great.” The winner of the Gr.1 Railway (1200m) at Ellerslie earlier this year before a break, Volpe Veloce resumed with a second placing behind the talented Love Affair, who was in receipt of four and a-half kilos, at Te Rapa last month. Richardson said the timing of tomorrow’s Gr.1 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1350m) was perfect for the daughter of Foxwedge. - NZME

In brief Back with the Breakers Corey Webster has returned to the New Zealand Breakers, and he has a lot to prove. Webster is back at his hometown club on a three-year deal, with the 29-year-old back for a third stint with the team he has spent nine years playing for. It wasn’t a long time away for Webster, who parted ways with the Breakers at the end of a difficult 20162017 season. The shooting guard battled with injuries throughout the campaign, and was involved in an off-court drama, being discharged without conviction in an assault case. - NZME
De Villiers calls time One of the greatest cricketers of all time has pulled stumps on his international career. South African batsman AB De Villiers has retired from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect, calling to a close a stunning career. De Villiers’ averages with the bat are superb. In tests, he averaged 50.66, while he will go down as possibly the greatest ODI bastmen, averaging 53.5 at a staggering strike rate of 101. Hesson in for Lehmann New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has replaced Darren Lehmann on the ICC’s cricket committee, a group responsible for helping shape the future of the sport. Lehmann was set to coach Australia until the end of the 2019 Ashes but quit after the ball-tampering saga. That meant he also vacated the International Cricket Council’s influential cricket committee, which has driven change in areas such as the Decision Review System. The committee chaired by Anil Kumble will meet next week in Mumbai, discussing player behaviour, potentially scrapping the toss and other issues. - AAP

Franklin guides rookies

An out of the blue announcement has turned a busy 2018 into an extremely busy 2018 for a young Methven triathlete. Mt Hutt College 16-year-old Brea Roderick knew she would be spending her winter training hard ahead of a trip to the Gold Coast in September to compete for New Zealand in the Junior Elite (U19) division at the ITU Triathlon World Championships. But what she hadn’t expected was that just three weeks later she would also be travelling to Buenos Aires, Argentina, as New Zealand’s sole female triathlon representative at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. The ITU Oceania World Cup event held at New Plymouth earlier this year proved to be Roderick’s most important race to date. The event carried double sig-
nificance as it was the only selection race for the single New Zealand place at the Youth Olympic Games as well as being part of the selection process for the New Zealand U19 Junior Elite Team for the World Championships. Roderick had already qualified as a member of the New Zealand under-19 age group team for the 2018 World Championships, but her performance at the New Plymouth selection race elevated her to the junior elite team. She finished eighth overall in New Plymouth and was the third New Zealander home, with her performance also leading to her selection for the trip to Argentina. “It was a massive surprise and I’m absolutely stoked. “I had absolutely no idea it was coming,” Roderick said. She said the Youth Olympics were a once in a lifetime opportunity and her ultimate goal was
to compete in the open Olympics one day, but the world champs were her main goal for now as they came first. Roderick was under no illusions in relation to the challenges that awaited her. September’s U19 World Championship race would be extremely difficult as she would be one of the youngest athletes on the start line. “For the Gold Coast it’s hard to have a goal because I’ve never raced in the under-19 age group and a lot of the girls have raced at this elite level before,” Roderick said. “To finish in the top half of the race would be great. “I just want to try my best and hopefully it all goes well,” Roderick said. Both the world championships and Youth Olympic Games would be contested over the sprint distance (750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run).
At the Youth Olympic Games, together with the individual event Roderick would also contest the Mixed Relay Continental Teams event. She and New Zealand team mate Dylan McCullough would team up with their Australian counterparts to form an Oceania four-person team. Each of the four team members would complete a full swimbike-run mini triathlon before tagging onto their next team mate. Roderick had been training under the direction of a team of capable and experienced coaches including Dr.John Hellemans and Axel Reiser (TriNZ – Canterbury Triathlon Academy) and Shane Jones (Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team), and together they’d be putting in the hard yards over the coming months to ensure Roderick was in peak form come September.
The formula that helps Sydney’s fresh-faced forwards find their feet at AFL level so quickly is simple: strong leadership and the tutelage of legend Lance Franklin. Franklin returned from a bruised heel last weekend and will spearhead the Swans’ push for a top-four spot tomorrow, when they face Brisbane. Youngsters Isaac Heeney and Tom Papley have also been a regular source of goals for John Longmire’s team this year, while Oliver Florent and Robbie Fox have also stepped up in their second season at the club. - AAP
Federer lauds Williams Considered by many as the greatest tennis player himself, Roger Federer said he believed his closest contemporary may be a legend on the women’s side. The Swiss pro, currently ranked world No. 2 in men’s singles tennis, told the Wall Street Journal that he considered Serena Williams to be the tennis GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). Owning 23 Grand Slam titles, Williams recently returned to the court after giving birth to her first child. Federer, born just seven weeks before Williams in 1981, said watching the world No. 1 return to the sport had been “fascinating”. And after being asked to clarify whether he considered Williams the ultimate GOAT or just on the women’s side, Federer confidently replied “overall”. - PA

Wakanui have favourites tag By Erin TaskEr
Erin.t@thEguardian.co.nz
Wakanui will make their first appearance in round two of the Mid/South Canterbury senior men’s hockey competition tomorrow. Mid Canterbury’s sole side in the competition, Wakanui had the bye in the first week of round two, after finishing in second spot in round one behind Temuka. Wakanui face a trip to Timaru tomorrow to take on a Northern Hearts side which has also been showing some promise this season despite only having picked up one win so far. Northern Hearts have picked up two draws, and suffered two losses, but Wakanui will head into the match as favourites having only dropped one match so far this season. Meanwhile in the senior women’s competition, Hampstead are yet to drop a game this season and they’ll be looking to keep that winning streak going when they also head to Timaru tomorrow. Hampstead claimed the first round with a win over Cambridge last week, and followed that up with a win over the defending champion Timaru Girls’ High School XI on Saturday. Tomorrow their opposition is Geraldine, and Hampstead won’t be taking anything for granted. A gap has opened up on the points table between the top three sides, and the rest, with Geraldine occupying third spot and Cambridge second. Further down the table, Mid Canterbury’s other women’s side – Hampstead/Collegians – will be at home tomorrow against Timaru Girls’ High School at 2.30pm at the Ashburton hockey turf. On Saturday they lost 3-1 to Craighead.
A 10-day break between UC Championship rugby games couldn’t have come at a better time for the Mid Canterbury Combined side. Mid Canterbury Combined headed to Christchurch on Wednesday afternoon and for the second time in four days, came home with a hefty loss to their names. After losing 87-0 to Christ’s College on Saturday, Mid Canterbury Combined took on another mighty powerhouse of Canterbury school boy rugby – Christchurch Boys’ High School (CBHS) – on Wednesday and lost 102-0. Mid Canterbury coach Blair O’Donnell said his side always knew it was going to be an uphill battle, and it was made even harder by a number of players being out with injury, but they fought hard to the end. “We kept the fight going. “It was a big score but we were half-pie expecting that,” O’Donnell said. “We knew these last two games were going to be a tough, tough ask. “In a way they’re out of the way now and we’ve only got one really big other school to face, and that’s Nelson College, but that one’s still a way down the track.” Despite being winless after four games, O’Donnell said his side wasn’t getting down.
NRL players who deliberately pass the ball at defenders in the ruck to draw a penalty will have the tables turned on them, under a new interpretation of the law to be implemented immediately. The NRL confirmed they had launched a crackdown into the act of dummy-halves passing the ball into defenders, which had infuriated fans in recent weeks. “What we have seen recently is a bad look for the game, and in simple terms, not in the spirit of the game,” NRL head of football Brian Canavan said. - AAP
Warriors captain Roger TuivasaSheck is preparing to play against South Sydney, but the arrival of his new born baby could rule him out of tomorrow’s NRL clash at Mt Smart Stadium. Tuivasa-Sheck is expected to return to the Warriors No 1 jersey after missing last week’s 24-14 win over Parramatta in Sydney, while he remained in Auckland to support his expecting fiancée Ashley Walker. Warriors’ supporters will be praying the baby arrives well before or after this weekend’s match, which kicks off at 7.30pm, with Tuivasa-Sheck confirming Walker is due to give birth on game day. - NMZE Jeremy Moore in action for Wakanui.

They knew there would be teams in the competition they could beat. “We’ve got one when we come back, and that’s Lincoln, and I don’t want to put the mockers on us but that’s one where we should be close,” O’Donnell said. Wednesday’s game against CBHS was meant to be played on Saturday but was moved forward to the Wednesday date due to the Mt Hutt College ball being on tonight, so that meant the Mid Canterbury boys had a few days to recover and reassess. It would hopefully give some of the injuries that are hampering the side some more time to improve. O’Donnell said thanks had to be given to Hampstead, Methven and Mt Hutt College for lending the Mid Canterbury Combined side players to ensure they had a full team on Wednesday. “If we hadn’t had those boys in as cover, we wouldn’t have had a backline,” O’Donnell said. He said he was proud of the way his side stuck it out to the end against CBHS. “It was a very physical game and we matched them physically, but probably just not on the skill level.” Mid Canterbury’s next UC Championship match will be against Lincoln Combined next weekend.
Benji v his brother When Jeremy Marshall-King last year turned his back on the chance to play alongside big brother Benji Marshall at the Wests Tigers, he did it so he could write his own legacy. Canterbury hooker Marshall-King will for the first time face off against the man he looked up to most of his life when he lines up opposite Benji and his Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium on Sunday. Born 10 years apart, the brothers are at opposite stages of their NRL careers. Benji is in his 16th and possibly final season after a career that has spanned a premiership, a World Cup win, and a stint in rugby union. Marshall-King is 22, in his second year of first grade. - AAP
Slipper in coke scandal Reds prop and former Wallabies skipper James Slipper has been stood down from all forms of rugby after twice testing positive for cocaine this season. He has been hit with a two month ban and fined $27,500 for breaching Rugby Australia’s illicit drugs policy. Slipper returned two positive tests for cocaine taken from urine samples between February and May 2018. In a statement, Slipper says he’s been suffering from depression for a year, but in no way does it excuse his actions. - AAP

Former Wallabies coach Robbie Deans will get his first taste of World Series Rugby when he leads the Panasonic Wild Knights into battle against the Western Force on August 17. Deans, who has been coaching the Japanese side since 2014, is set to bring a strong squad to Perth for the match at nib Stadium. The match will be the seventh of World Series Rugby. The Force have already recorded wins over the Fiji Warriors and a Tongan representative side. They will face the Rebels, Crusaders, Samoa, and Hong Kong over the coming months. - AAP

LeBron James is tired. Meanwhile the young Boston Celtics seem to be getting stronger. Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): It’s minor things that happen today – subtle, even. Your interpretation of events will influence your destiny (and mood!) more than the events themselves. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Certain people have proven to be so much trouble for you that you avoid them completely. As for the unknown trouble sources – it’s just a sense you get, and today an accurate one. Heed your own warning. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You have excellent rapport with a lot of different kinds of people. But what you have with one person is a deep and lasting connection, made possible by your intimate understanding of their pain and joy. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You may be in line for a certain product, but it’s not the product you’re after, not really. You want the experience – the dance of this. You want the story this quest is sure to give you. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You wonder if the right sort of partnership could lift your life to a new place. What would the relationship have to be? What would you ask of the other person? There may be a way to embody these things yourself. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The saying goes: “You get out what you put in.” That’s not entirely true. If you wanted the same thing you put in, you’d just keep it. As for trades you’re making, some no longer seem worth it. Change it up. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): If a tourist came into your life right now, that person would see some parts of it as romantic, fascinating and fun and other parts as uncomfortable and in need of a lift. What do you see with “tourist” eyes? SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Most people wait for breaks to spend time with the ones they love, but you don’t have to. You can create the moments; steal them. You’ll be inspired to make up your own meaningful events. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Believing is a funny thing. You may believe in things you know aren’t real because it’s more interesting or because everyone is doing it, or because the belief encompasses more “real” than reality. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): There are a number of things far more contagious than head colds: manners of thought, emotional expressions, luck, attitudes, sayings, skills, viewpoints... You’ll be in the mix and picking up plenty. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You want clarity, productivity, high energy and success. Well, you want at least three of those things anyway, and there’s one you’re not so sure of. If you can convince yourself, the impediments will fall away. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): For a discipline to make a difference in your life it must be constant in nature. Repetition is the only way a practice can become engrained as second nature and adopted as character.

Sport BEKO BACK ON COURT
The Mainland netball team took on Central at the EA Networks Centre last year. BY ERIN TASKER

After a successful visit to Ashburton in 2017, Mainland Netball is bringing the Beko Netball League back this season, twice. The Mainland side will play two of its Beko Netball League matches at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre this season. They’ll play Waikato/Bay of Plenty in their first home game of the season in Ashburton on June 3, and be back again to take on South on July 15. Into its third year, the Beko Netball League is used to strengthen New Zealand’s netball performance pathway along with the development of talent and competitiveness of Netball New Zealand’s elite teams. A big part of it was also taking netball to
the provinces, and Mid Canterbury was a province happy to oblige. Mid Canterbury Netball president Karla Newlands said it was great to see such a high level of netball in Ashburton. “It’s great for the local community to get to watch them and not have to travel all the time,” Newlands said. She said Ashburton was benefitting from Christchurch not having their own proper netball venue at the moment. “The more events we can get before that happens, the better,” Newlands said. The Lincoln Event Centre would host two of Mainland’s other home games this season, while Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre would host the other. The Ashburton match against WBOP would be played on the Sunday of Queen’s
Birthday weekend, and it would form part of a big netball weekend. The EA Networks Centre would also host the Under-15 Mainland Netball zone tournament, with age group teams from as far away as Timaru in the south and Nelson in the north set to take part. A tournament usually runs over three weekends in Christchurch; this year it was being held over the long weekend at EA Networks Centre instead, thanks to its ability to host such a tournament, Newlands said. The Mainland versus WBOP Beko Netball League game would be played at 5.40pm on the Sunday. The Beko Netball League consisted of 31 games run over 13 weekends. players – who had not played more than 36 quarters in the former trans-Tasman Netball League/ANZ Premiership prior to the current Beko Netball League season – on their match list alongside emerging players from their zone. This year’s Mainland side was being coached by two faces familiar around Mid Canterbury, with both the coach Ronelle van Dongen and assistant coach Andrea Cousins hailing from Ashburton. There could even be a familiar face on court, with former Mid Cantabrian Kelsey Ashworth having been on the bench for Mainland during their game against the Northern Comets last weekend. Entry to both games at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre would be $5 for adults, with under-16s free.
