The rodeo-goers who thronged to Methven on Sunday were a mostly wellbehaved bunch, according to police. Although around 5000 people packed the Methven A&P Showgrounds for the annual event, only a few minor behaviour offences eventuated. Previous years have seen parties shut down, property damaged at accommodation facilities and other various drunken antics. But Methven Police Senior Constable Mike Seque said police had a strong presence at this year’s rodeo, and the majority of people who attended were courteous and respectful. “Most people were well behaved and were just out to enjoy themselves.” he said.
“The majority of people who went into town afterwards were also well behaved.” Seque said one person was found to be driving under the influence, and will appear in the Ashburton District Court on an excess breath charge. A “small number” of other arrests were made throughout the event for minor behaviour offences. The Methven Rodeo is one of the largest on the New Zealand circuit and attracts visitors from around New Zealand and beyond. The event banned glass and BYO alcohol and stepped up security levels several years ago, opting for a licenced onsite bar instead. Methven Rodeo Spokesperson Dave Harper said the new system was “continuing to work well” to minimise in-

toxication issues. Efforts to become safer and more “family orientated” including the addition of a family area, chill-out zone and children’s rides in recent years. Following this year’s rodeo, police are urging people to make sure that if they are going out at night and will be drinking, to organise a safe way home or find nearby accommodation before leaving. “This is particularly important in an area like Methven as it’s a fair distance from other towns and has limited accommodation, particularly when there is an event on and accommodation is likely to be pre-booked by other visitors,” said Seque. “We advise making plans before you go out, as plans made during or after drinking are likely to lack good judgement.”

Ardern promises ‘a Govt of action’ The major changes coming under the new government have been revealed. The coalition agreement between Labour and New Zealand First was released yesterday – setting out the policy plans for the new government. It is the result of 12 days of negotiations which ultimately saw New Zealand First leader Winston Peters and his party choose to put Labour into power. Jacinda Ardern said yesterday represented a huge step change in the future of the NZ Government. The agreements build a clear agenda, prioritising regional economic development and job creation, Ardern said. “There has been a period of neglect over the last nine years for our regions.” The minimum wage will go up to $20 by 2021. Ardern says $16.50 starting in April 2018, will rise in steps since then. “We are a low wage economy ... New Zealanders deserve a wage they can live on ... it is no longer acceptable to try and expect families to survive on the minimum wage as it currently is.” There will be real progress on the environment and increases to the minimum wage, she says. Peters said NZ First was never going to get everything it wanted, but his team is entirely happy with the agreements. The coalition agreement also has a clause preventing ‘waka jumping’, which Peters says is a great idea. There had been too many examples over a long period of MPs

porting our regional economies, increasing exports, lifting wages and reducing inequality. “We are committed to being fiscally responsible and growing the economy, while ensuring all New Zealanders share in our economic prosperity. We firmly believe economic growth must also go hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility.” On immigration, Ardern confirmed the plan was to reduce the number of immigrants to 20,000 to 30,000. Peters says his party wanted bigger drops, but negotiations meant not everything was possible. - NZME

■ NEW ZEALAND TROTTING CUP
High hopes for Heaven Rocks By Linda CLarke
Linda.c@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton race horse owner Gavin Douglas is hoping the planets align next month for Heaven Rocks to win the New Zealand Trotting Cup. It will be Douglas’ 50th consecutive cup day meeting and the gangly horse that he part-owns is a real contender. It would make a cracker day for Douglas, who is passionate about the horse racing industry and remembers his first cup day in 1968 when the Ted Lowe-trained Humphrey took out that year’s big race. The crowds on course were huge and the atmosphere electric. The legal age for betting was 21, but that didn’t stop 17-yearold Douglas who had grown up going to the races with his parents. Cup days were special though, and he was hooked. “I haven’t missed one since.” Douglas has witnessed some champions over the years, including in 1979 Lord Module, who stood at the start and lost 60 metres, but regained the field with a round to go and won easily. Mid Canterbury reinsman Ricky May was aboard Inky Lord when he was bowled at the 600m mark but came back to win in 1989, and last year Lazarus dominated the race to win by an incredible 10 lengths. Douglas says while the Melbourne Cup in Australia can stop a nation, the New Zealand Trotting Cup does too on the second Tuesday of November. The day is a spectacle for the racing industry and a chance to share the excitement with new fans stepping on a track for the first time. Come November 14, Doug-

PHOTO LINDA CLARKE 241017-LC-093 las, his sons Mark and Tony, and friends will head to Addington for the 2017 edition. Douglas is not superstitious but he will be wearing a shirt and tie in the same silver-blue colours as Heaven Rocks. The five-year-old, who stands a massive 17.5 hands tall, is trained by Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen. Rasmussen will take the reins on cup day and Douglas said no-one in their camp was worried by their second-row start because of Heaven Rocks’ unruly status.
It only added to his character as a fast runner. Douglas part-owns the horse with Phil and Glenys Kennard, Phil and Margaret Creighton and Kevin Riseley, who make up the Major Mark Syndicate. The group, working with Purdon, has owned a succession of top trotters that have collectively won 16 group one races – Douglas says the thrill of winning never diminishes. The Kennards also own Lazarus, who cemented himself as cup favourite with a win in the

Ashburton retailer Tony Todd is hoping to see the East Street checkerboard full on Thursday at a rally to protest the closure of Ashburton’s i-SITE. Experience Mid Canterbury has closed the Ashburton i-SITE and will restructure Methven’s following a review of the organisation, which suggested the money spent on operating the i-SITES could be better spent promoting events and tourism in the district. Todd is encouraging people opposed to the i-SITE closure to attend Thursday’s rally, at 12.15pm. “If the number of people who have commented about the closure turn up then the checkerboard will not be big enough,” he said. “It is over to the community now.” Todd said Thursday’s rally will include a short address by organisers. The aim is to send a message to the Ashburton District Council about concern over the closure. He hopes council will then discuss the matter, and a petition against the closure, at its Thursday afternoon meeting. Experience Mid Canterbury is part-funded by council and will be receiving a report from general manager Bruce Moffat at the meeting. “It would be great if someone moved a motion saying why don’t we do something,” Todd said. “The ball is in their court.” Alastair Miller of Ashburton is among residents hoping to get to protest, and said it was shortsighted for the facility to close. “We want the town to grow, people want the personal touch, not the app touch.” The council review of Experience Mid Canterbury suggested council work with the organisation on a revised tourism promotion strategy refocusing on attracting, developing and promoting events and on promoting the major attractions in the district. ■ ECAN COUNCILLORS VISIT
Over-allocation highlighted BY SUSAN SANDYS
SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Environment Canterbury’s environmental imperatives were reinforced on a councillors’ tour of Mid Canterbury’s fragile biodiversity yesterday. Forest and Bird Ashburton members hosted about eight councillors on a bus trip visiting the upper and lower Ashburton River and Wakanui Beach. An over-allocated Ashburton River was among issues they focused on, as well as farmland development encroaching on environmental values in the high country. ECan acting chairman Steve Lowndes said the Ashburton Water Zone Committee, which has ECan representation, was having to review unlimited water takes for irrigation. “We all know that water has been over-allocated and it’s been done on a first come first serve sort of basis,” he said. “But now we know a lot more about the hydrology of the plains.”
That review was happening for many before the water consents’ expiry dates, which for some was not until 2035. In September Save the Rivers said there were 52 surface water consents with minimum flow conditions but only five would expire before 2023, the year the zone committee aims to restore minimum river flows to six cumecs. Lowndes emphasised the collaborative aspect of the work, as this was how things were done effectively, albeit not always as quickly as many would like. “You can’t go around waving a rule book and destroying the rural economy,” Lowndes said. With regard to farmland development in the high country, this was moreso an Ashburton District Council area, as it was the local body which issued consents for such work. Forest and Bird president Edith Smith said the day had provided a good opportunity to talk to councillors.

‘Mischief-makers’ attack By SuSan SandyS
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Environment Canterbury councillor John Sunckell says the rural community can hold its head up high despite a vandalism attack on two farms at the weekend. The Leeston dairy farmer was in Mid Canterbury yesterday, attending a tour held by Ashburton Forest and Bird and an Ashburton Water Zone Committee meeting. Sunckell was commenting after his property was targeted by vandals. He turned up at 3.15am to work on Saturday to find the valve of a milk storage container had been opened, which resulted in 6000 litres of milk running out onto the tanker track and into the stormwater system. A nearby Hororata farm was also attacked, it had 30 tyres slashed on its irrigation pivots. Sunkell had initially thought the vandalism was a burglary gone wrong, however, there was nothing taken and just the gate valve was left wide open with the milk gone. This made him suspect environmental mischief-makers. He urged farmers to be aware of their security. However, they could hold their heads high in the face of such unjustified action because the rural sector was making good progress with a wide range of environmental measures. “There’s a real awareness of what
Environment Canterbury councillor John Sunckell in Ashburton yesterday. PHOTO SUSAN SANDYS 241017-SS-124 we can achieve in our communities,” he said, mentioning farmers’ progress towards creating farm environment plans, a wide range of nitrate minimisation initiatives, and reaching an

“acceptance and understanding” of the sector’s environmental impacts. He hoped trust could be reinstated in communities in the face of what was a real urban rural divide.

Mid Canterbury population growth slows Population growth in Mid Canterbury has slowed fractionally with the district home to 34,100 people at June 30 this year, according to new data from Stats NZ. The district grew 1.3 per cent in the 12 months to the end of June, compared to an average annual growth of 1.4 per cent in previous years. Mid Canterbury grew faster than Timaru at 0.8 per cent but not as fast as Selwyn on 5.7 per cent. Across the country 15 of the 16 regions experienced population growth with Auckland accounting for about 43 per cent of the total growth of 100,400. About half Mid Canterbury’s population change of 440 was due to net migration, with more people arriving than leaving. Canterbury growth was 2 per cent, with Christchurch back to pre-quake levels. The fastest-growing territorial authority areas were the Queenstown-Lakes at 6.8 per cent and Selwyn. The West Coast was the only region in decline. The median age varied across New Zealand, from 31.6 years in Hamilton to 52.8 years in Thames-Coromandel. In the Ashburton district it was 39.2, compared to 39.3 in 2016 and 39.4 in 2013. In a breakdown of ages, Mid Canterbury has 6900 people in the 0-14 age bracket, 10,400 in the 15-39 bracket, 10,800 in the 40-64 bracket and 6000 in the 65 plus bracket. The number in the 65 plus bracket has grown from 16.4 per cent of the district’s population in 2013 to 17.5 per cent.

■ BIRD OF THE YEAR
Kea earns overdue recognition By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
Kea have soared to success in the 2017 Bird of the Year competition and claimed “long overdue” recognition. The mischievous mountain parrot collected 7311 votes from fans over two weeks, taking out the title yesterday morning. It is the first time they have won the annual Forest & Bird poll. The native birds are celebrated for their curiosity, intelligence and cheeky charisma, but lesser known is their rapid flight towards extinction. Only 3000 to 7000 kea remain, despite numbering in the hundreds of thousands in the early 1900s. Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said although kea have the naughty habit of pulling pieces off cars in the car park, keas are a “pretty cool bird”, and deserving of the title. “It’s long overdue and we’re pretty pleased,” he said. He said Mt Hutt would not be the same without its kea residents. “We’ve noticed their numbers have declined … this winter there’s been just three up on the
mountain, which is a lot less than the year before.” Seven or eight ski seasons ago, he said the skifield would have had around 16 resident keas. According to the Kea Conservation Trust, threats facing kea populations include poisoning from lead and pest control traps, accidents with cars and other human objects, and predation from introduced mammalian species. Up until the 1970s the bird was considered a pest, and a legal government bounty offered money in exchange for their beaks. It’s estimated that this resulted in the death of around 150,000 kea. The Kea Conservation Trust has been working for 11 years to research kea issues, provide accessible information about the birds, and mitigate present threats. An online Kea Database was also launched by the Arthurs Pass Kea Team earlier this year to keep tabs on the kea population. Additionally, the Bird of the Year competition raised over $10,000 in donations to help protect New Zealand’s wildlife, some of which will help kea conservation efforts. Second place in the Bird of the

also scored over 500 votes in the competition, which included 55 birds in total.

OUR VIEW
Alcohol not a must for a successful event Matt Markham
EDITOR
S
ustainability for major events across New Zealand has proven difficult in recent times, but Sunday’s Methven Rodeo certainly bucked the trend. With new strict alcohol laws prohibiting some events from reaching out to the public in a manner in which they have grown accustomed to, many key dates and events on the calendar have fallen to the wayside. Although alcohol isn’t the be-all and end-all of any event, people certainly do seem to want to be able to go to an event and enjoy a beverage or two. Crackdowns at events such as the Boxing Day Races have seen its attendance numbers decline rapidly – to the point where this year the popular race meeting will no longer be held – instead a new, family friendly event on Christmas Eve will take its place. But on Sunday, up in Methven, there was no dramatic drop in numbers. People flocked to the annual rodeo in their droves and enjoyed themselves on the best day of the warmer months so far. Although not a completely dry event, the rodeo has certainly shifted focus from the party atmosphere that it once held and has placed a real emphasis on providing for the entire family and organisers can be proud of the fact that they seem to have been able to weather that storm without having a major impact on crowd sizes. The crowd in attendance on Sunday was certainly plentiful and reports of good behaviour and minimal issues will have come as music to the ears of those charged with overseeing the day. And away from the human aspect, there was a notable shift toward ensuring that the animals, who play such a key part in the day, were well looked after and cared for throughout the day – another requirement forced upon a number of these type of events as the world gets tighter on health and safety and animal cruelty. Rodeos might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but Methven’s edition on Sunday certainly showed that, with a hard-working committee and some excellent planning, a good day can be had by everybody. No matter what the circumstances might be.

YOUR VIEW i-SITE closure Why is our council considering shutting down a valuable public amenity: the i-SITE? Anyone who has travelled, either at home or abroad, knows the benefits of visiting such a facility. These sites advertise their district’s places of interest, history and cultural/environment. However, their true worth extends further, they procure the most attractive transport, accommodation and ways of viewing the central district and hinterland. Local value cannot be downplayed, visitors to our centre encourage custom to our true urban businesses. Numerous locals regularly use the centre, not all agree to online information and transactions. For locals and tourists alike our i-SITE provides service with skill, knowledge, and politeness; both groups leave the building feeling you have been welcomed and well served by both staff and the local community. In some ways, it is unfortunate that the i-SITE debacle has happened at this time, while equally pressing issues facing this community lie on the table. In my view five of these issues require attention. They are: The amount of time and money spent on obtaining site and developing new administration and library facilities. The deterioration of some of the basic infrastructures ie; the town’s footpaths, surface and under-surface drainage, as well as the state of many of our rural and urban roads. The continued use of outside consultants. They are expensive (especially when the cost of running an i-SITE is considered). Surely the borough has the knowledge and skill within our council staff. And, if not, there is always the power to co-opt from our experienced local expertise. The chair of governance requiring a PA and allegedly media presenters’ services at considerable cost to public finances. The lack of regular councillorrun clinics where locals/rate payers can air their views and raise their concerns. The immediate and widespread media publication on any change in regulations so that ratepayers are well aware of the implications before they make life changing and financially loaded decisions. However, the focus of attention is the i-SITE closure for a self-stated immigration/tourist orientated council that must pay due attention to the local, and in many cases, long-term residents. This facility’s closure is unthinkable; rather than shutting

************* Over Labour weekend I had the pleasure of being at the National Young Performer Awards in Palmerston North. On Sunday evening whilst taking our LA based adjudicators back to their accommodation, they told me they were heading to the South Island with their young family. They told me where they were headed – to Dunedin and checking out some rocks on a beach on their way south, as their professional tour planner had said they should. I said “cool you will go through my home town of Ashburton”. They both had a think and said “Oh yes, we are stopping there as our itinerary says it has great toilets as there aren’t really any others”, this shocked me completely. Then I got to thinking. So all the money EMC are spending promoting our town and all the international tour planners have to tell their clients is it’s a great toilet spot! Then more than ever we need the i-SITE to remain open as these people will use the wonderful toilets then hopefully go to the i-SITE to find out more about our region, stay and spend their money in our economy. Just a timely thought to think about. Deanna Watson
Cracroft stock water race Thank you for the courtesy of a response to my letter in respect of the Ashburton District Council totally ignoring its legal responsibility to stop trout and salmon from entering the intake schemes. Mayor Donna, please note the following: On June 23, 2006 MP David Benson-Pope announced the Rangitata River was protected by a Water Conservation Order. The order set out constraints on “damming, and alteration of the river flow and form, maintenance of fish passage, and alteration of water quality that applies to the river”. That 2006 Conservation Order gave all with intakes from the Rangitata two years to comply with the requirement to stop or reduce trout and salmon from entering the intake schemes.

The Cracroft stock water intake, administered by the Ashburton District Council (ADC), was one of the parties required to make good on the above requirements. Hello! Mayor Donna, that was many years ago – at least nine years ago! Why have the employed officers of the ADC failed, ignored and sat on their hands all this time? While current councillors cannot be held to account for this blatant ostrich-like behaviour its paid officers certainly need to be taken to task. Regardless of the excuse that one day “we could one day close down the stock water intake at Cracroft”, this is no reason for inaction by the ADC, after several years of hoping the problem will go away. I find your plea that it would place a burden on the ratepayers if the ADC had to budget for such an expense, to be rather feeble. To suggest it might become part of a future long-term plan for the council is amusing as well. Neither of these arguments holds any water, so to speak, because the ADC is non-compliant in respect of Cracroft and it has ignored its requirements under the Conservation Order on the Rangitata since 2006! The ADC has had plenty of time to budget and, to add it to previous long-term plans. I appreciate there is a governance and management relationship in place and this needs to be respected. However when successive CEOs and paid employees fail to act on a legal requirement, I believe this is a time for the governing body to start asking questions as an employer. In May 2016 there was an audit of our property to ascertain if we had the ‘right pipe’ for the storm water overflow. This resulted in the need to add three raised gully-traps to ensure our drainage system was compliant. There was a time-frame, given by the Ashburton District Council, to ensure the work was carried out so our property was compliant. Why is it that the Ashburton District Council demands compliance by its ratepaying citizens

while it sits on its backside when the same is expected of it in respect of the Cracroft stock water race? In future, perhaps I need to follow the strategy of what is good for the goose is also good for the gander! That is, I will write to the council and state I cannot pay for my ‘non-compliance’ as it is not in my annual budget. I will also suggest I need to obtain feedback from members of my family via a round of consultation. If debated and approved, I will include it in my 10 Year Strategic Plan for future reference. I might eventually get around to it! Rex Whiting
Change in columnist Not all of your readers are National supporters, so with a change of Government will we see a change of MP writing opinion columns in your paper? Has the Guardian approached MP Jo Luxton for a regular contribution or will we now see three years of negative rebuttal by Falloon and Adams? By allowing their opinions to continue the Guardian gives them free newspaper coverage without a chance of a comeback from the elected government. For the sake of balanced opinion, I believe Labour and New Zealand First should now take over the MP opinion page. Do you agree? Peter Livingstone In Reply, Yes Peter, not all of our readers are National supporters. But it would also pay to note that in the two electorates, which this region falls into, both seats were won by National candidates who are therefore this region’s elected members of parliament, so are, in our eyes, more than justified in having space in our pages to write to the region. However, Jo Luxton has also been approached to write a fortnightly column and she has happily accepted. This will begin next week. Regards, Editor

Catalonians resist Spanish Catalonia says it is confident all officials including police will defy attempts by Madrid to enforce direct rule on the region, in an escalating dispute that has raised fears of unrest among Spain’s European allies. The Spanish government has invoked special constitutional powers to fire the regional government and force a new election to counter an independence drive that has rattled the economy. A vote in the Senate to implement direct rule is due later this week. But the leaders of the secessionist campaign say a disputed referendum on October 1 has given them the mandate to claim independence from the rest of Spain. “It’s not that we will refuse (orders). It is not a personal decision. It is a seven millionperson decision,” Catalonia’s foreign affairs chief Raul

Romeva told BBC radio. The Catalan crisis has raised fears among European countries that it could spill over to the rest of the continent. From Scotland to Flanders
and Lombardy, the 2007-09 financial crisis, unemployment and migration have allowed anti-EU and populist parties to feed off discontent with political elites and
reopen regional divisions. Two wealthy regions of northern Italy voted overwhelmingly on Sunday for greater autonomy. Catalan president Carles Puigdemont has called the Catalan parliament to meet this week to agree on a response to Madrid, something many observers say could pave the way for a formal declaration of independence. The assembly will meet on Thursday to agree a response to direct rule. – AP
Zellweger to play Garland A new film about the legendary Judy Garland is rolling into production. A rich, complex role that’s bound to offer its star a bounty of material to work with (and likely some awards season-friendly element of physical transformation); Variety has now revealed it’s Oscarwinner Renée Zellweger who’s snapped up the role of Garland. Judy is based on a script written by The Crown’s Tom Edge, produced by BAFTA winner David Livingstone, and directed by Tony nominee Rupert Goold. The production will also involve some of Garland’s bestknown songs.
Journalist stabbed at Moscow radio station The deputy editor-in-chief for Russia’s leading news radio station has been stabbed by an unknown attacker. Ekho Moskvy, which has often been described as Russia’s only independent news radio station, said on its website that the assailant burst into its
studios and stabbed Tatyana Felgenhauer in the throat. She is best known for co-hosting a popular morning show. The station’s editor-in-chief, Alexei Venediktov, tweeted that Felgenhauer has been taken to hospital and her life is not in danger.
He said the man has been detained. The spokesman for the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office described the attack as “outrageous” and said prosecutors are committed to investigating the case closely. Ekho Moskvy’s searing criti-
cism has irked many in the Russian government, and its hosts and journalists have reported death threats previously. Another popular Ekho Moskvy host, Yulia Latynina, fled Russia in September following a suspected arson attack on her car. – AP
Millions of school-age children not in education Some 264 million school-age children and young people worldwide were not in education in 2015, the United Nations says. The agency also warned that moves in many countries to hold schools accountable for results can backfire if they are not carefully designed. And it said that increasingly widespread policies to give parents more choice as
to which school their children attend, including voucher programs, could worsen educational segregation. After a decline in the early 2000s, out-of-school rates have started to stagnate, UNESCO said in its progress report on the UN’s development goals for education. Worldwide, there was a completion rate of 83 per cent for primary education, falling to
45 per cent for upper secondary schooling, the agency said. There were 40 countries where less than one-in-four young people had completed secondary education, but only 14 where at least 90 per cent had done so. UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova called for more government accountability. The report noted that while 82 per cent of national con-

in their homes and there will still be homes being built. If you look at construction, the new coalition is looking like investing in houses and having a push on infrastructure.” Total stores fell by one during the year as a result of the earthquake-related close of the Kaikoura outlet. Cowie said he expects the Mitre 10 network of stores to grow, including several of the Mega format stores and a few regular Mitre 10 that are likely to scale up to Mega.
The aggregate of Mitre 10 store sales rose to $1.36 billion in the latest year, from $1.24 billion. Cost of sales rose to $747 million in the latest year from $692 million. Margins were squeezed after a mild winter last year, which saw the chain forced to mark down heating products. This year, Mitre 10 has faced a wet spring season. “It’s still early days so hopefully there’s a bit of pent-up demand,” he said. “Seasonal categories can be under pressure. But we’re picking that it’s still going to be a
strong year for our business.” Dividend payments in the latest year fell to $2.26 million from $5.78 million a year earlier, when the company restructured its share registry, mopping up smaller parcels of its redeemable stock. The company also rewrote its constitution and shareholder agreement and no longer owns any of the stores, with the last, at Manukau, sold for $4.7 million, although the gain on sale was just $17,000. Foley Wines seeks to buy Mt Difficulty Wines NZAX-listed Foley Family Wines is in talks to buy Mt Difficulty Wines, which would add the premium Mt Difficulty and Roaring Meg brands to a suite that includes Vavasour, Grove Mill and Te Kairanga. Blenheim-based Foley Family Wines yesterday said it was discussing the potential acquisition of Mt Difficulty’s assets and business, including the Central Otago brands, and winemaking and cellar door facilities. The details are confidential and the company said it would update the market when there are material developments.
“Entry into a transaction with MDW is subject to FFW satisfactorily completing due diligence and successfully concluding transaction documentation with MDW, and completion of any transaction is expected to be subject to conditions including the need for FFW shareholder approval and Overseas Investment Office approval,” Foley Family Wines said in a statement. Foley Family Wines, which is controlled by US businessman Bill Foley, posted a 38 per cent decline in 2017 annual profit to
$3.1 million, including a $2.6 million charge on damage caused to its Grove Mill Winery site in Marlborough after the November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake and $4.7 million from insurance payments. The company spent $3.2 million on plant, property and equipment due to the earthquake damage and had just $263,000 of cash and equivalents at the June 30 balance date. The NZAX-listed shares last traded at $1.30 and have dropped 13 per cent so far this year. – NZME

review of its two biggest projects in the B+I construction division is under consideration ahead of today’s AGM, when the company expects to provide earnings guidance. “The company is taking the necessary time to carefully consider this matter. We expect the trading halt to cease on Wednesday 25 October 2017, with the announcement of earnings guidance for the 2018 financial year,” it said in a release to the stock exchange. Fletcher also said it expects to announce a new CEO prior to market opening today. The AGM in Auckland was already expected to be contentious.

Trading halt for Fletcher Building shares Fletcher Building shares were in a trading halt yesterday ahead of today’s annual meeting as a review of its Building + Interiors (B+I) business unit hangs over the company’s 2018 earnings outlook, and with a new chief executive set to be announced. Auckland-based Fletcher downgraded earnings twice last year as escalating construction costs and a lack of oversight on major building projects saw the B+I unit come under pressure. After booking a series of onetime impairment charges Fletcher had said cash flow was set to improve in the 2018 financial year, although an independent KPMG
show bank borrowings jumped to $19.1 million from $6.7 million a year earlier, and its finance costs rose to $1.1 million from $637,000. At balance date the company had $68.7 million of unused facilities compared with $50.5 million a year earlier. Cowie said as part of Mitre 10’s restructuring it moved to paying member rebates by instalment rather than at the end of each year, which helped its members manage their cash flow and reduced the financing “bulge” it previously faced. Unlike rivals such as Fletcher and ITM, the Mitre 10 outlets rely less on trade sales – that is, to builders – and the split is currently 70 per cent retail and 30 per cent trade, he said. Mitre 10 stores are currently rolling out revamped bathroom departments having spruced up its kitchens departments in a move that led to a 30 per cent increase in kitchen sales, he said. “Our trade strategy is to not just sell concrete and Pink Batts – we’re happy to sell them (builders) the kitchens and bathrooms as well,” Cowie said. – NZME

Mitre 10 (New Zealand), the cooperative that services the Mitre 10 hardware chain, posted a 38 per cent gain in full-year profit after reining in some expenses including wages, helping offset some margin pressure on seasonal products. Profit was $4.4 million in the 12 months ended June 30 from $3.2 million a year earlier, the Auckland-based company said in a statement. Revenue from the sale of goods rose to $818 million from $767 million. The co-operative, whose shares are held by its store-owning members, supplies goods and services to the 81 outlets in the group, which it says makes it the nation’s biggest home improvement and garden supplies retailer. It competes with the ITM chain, Australia’s Bunnings Warehouse, Fletcher Building’s Placemakers and the Carters chain in what chief executive Neil Cowie says is “a highly competitive market”. “We’re cautiously optimistic,” Cowie told BusinessDesk. “There’s been some softening around the edges” through the 2017 election “but people will still be investing

A sausage for every occasion T
he annual Kiwi sausage awards are over for the year and we’ve celebrated, or not, national sausage day, but that doesn’t mean the humble sausage, snarler or banger is off the menu for the rest of the year. Sausages have come of age. They’re no longer just pork or beef. Sausage flavours are as wide as the imagination and best of all good quality sausages are widely available. Whether you’re eating them unadorned, smothered in flavoursome sauces or in a casserole or as part of a mixed dish meal, there’s a sausage for every occasion.
Sausage, mushroom and capsicum casserole 8 pork sausages 1 cooking onion, diced 1 red capsicum, diced 130g mushrooms, sliced 30g butter 30g plain flour 150ml milk 300ml pork stock ½ t garlic powder ½ t paprika ½ t cumin ½ t chilli powder, to taste ½ t basil ½ t ground coriander ½ t oregano 1 T sugar 1 T tomato paste ■ Lightly brown sausages and cut each sausage into 3 pieces. ■ Place in a casserole dish then add the onions, capsicum and mushrooms. ■ Melt butter in a saucepan over a low/medium heat. ■ Keeping on a low/medium heat, stir the flour into the butter to make a smooth paste then stir in the milk. ■ Keep stirring until the paste/flour is absorbed. ■ Add tomato paste and stir in. ■ Add the herbs, spices and sugar; stirring constantly.
■ Heat gently for 2-3 minutes; then stir in the stock. ■ Once sauce is blended pour into the casserole dish. ■ Stir to ensure all of the ingredients are covered. ■ Cook in a preheated oven at 180 degrees C for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes.
Sausages with beer 2 T Oil 8 beef sausages 2 carrots, diced 2 leeks, finely sliced 1 stalk celery, sliced 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 375ml lager 1 C beef stock
salt and freshly ground pepper, to season ¼ C fresh coriander, chopped ■ Heat a frying pan, add oil and sausages, then cook to brown all over. ■ Add onion to the pan and cook over a medium heat for 5 minutes to soften. ■ Add grated ginger and dry spices and cook for 1 minute more. ■ Add apricots and chicken stock, then simmer very gently for 1 hour. ■ Stir in coriander and season with salt and pepper to taste.
■ Heat a little of the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. ■ Prick sausages with a fork and cook until well coloured. ■ Remove sausages from the pan and set aside. Wipe excess fat out of pan with a paper towel. ■ Heat remaining oil in the pan and gently cook carrots, leeks, celery and garlic until tender. ■ Increase the heat and pour in lager and beef stock, allow to boil and reduce by half. ■ Season to taste with salt and pepper. ■ Return sausages to the pan and simmer for 5 minutes.

In brief Karate kids excel For the 14 members of the JION IKDA that travelled south to Queenstown over the long weekend for the Otago/Southland Karate Championships, it was a well worthwhile trip. The team returned home with 14 medals, five gold, five silver and four bronzes. Carina Lupse, Madison Edmond, Madison Soal, Jack McIntosh and Charles Savage all came away with golds, while McIntosh and Savage also won two silvers, and Lupse a bronze. Holly Burrowes, Taylah Ward and Kyle Cabangun all won silvers, while Taylah Burrowes won a bronze.
Eels not chasing Cronk The race to sign Cooper Cronk is seemingly down to two NRL clubs after Parramatta pulled out of the running to secure his signature. The Eels were believed to be in the picture alongside the Sydney Roosters and Cronulla to lure the Sydney-bound Melbourne halfback to the club next season. But Parramatta chief executive Bernie Gurr said they would stick with their current halves combination of Corey Norman and Mitchell Moses for next year. - AAP

■ CROQUET
Croquet’s elite turn out By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Some of New Zealand’s best association croquet players were in Ashburton over Labour weekend to compete at the Magak Tournament, which was held in the Ashburton Domain
by the Waireka Croquet Club. “It is the premier tournament. “It covers handicaps six to minus-four, so it is pretty tough,” Waireka publicity officer Raylene Phillips said. “There were people from Auckland, New Plymouth and the
West Coast, it was really the elite of the croquet world.” The competition was won by Greg Bryant, who is currently ranked as the second best player in New Zealand. Two Mid Canterbury names filled out second and third, with
Edmund Fordyce taking second, while Jarrod Coutts finished third. “It was very impressive to have them finish second and third and we are really thrilled with how the whole tournament went,” Phillips said.
Beware Samoa. Not that the Kiwis need any reminding, but their opening game at Mt Smart shapes as an extremely tough contest. While much of the focus has been on Tonga ahead of this World Cup, their island neighbours in Group B will be an intimidating proposition. That was reinforced at the team’s hotel in Auckland yesterday, as the Toa Samoa team gathered for their pre-tournament photos. The Samoans have enough weapons to replicate their deeds of the 2014 Four Nations, where they came desperately close to beating both England and New Zealand. - NZME
England out for revenge David Klemmer believes England will be out to exact revenge for a heated loss to the Kangaroos in last year’s Four Nations, when the Rugby League World Cup kicks off on Friday. Australia held a slender four-point lead at halftime before running amok for a 36-18 win over Wayne Bennett’s side – their ninth-straight win over the old enemy. - AAP

In brief
■ RUGBY
Crusaders on the brink By Patrick Mckendry In the not too distant past, a week with the Barbarians started with the reception of a wad of cash in a brown envelope and a long lunch. The biggest decisions of the day would be whether to choose the red or the white. Things may have changed a little these days, but the ethos remains the same – the players come together to have fun and enjoy each other’s company. The socialising allows those from different countries to get to know each other and there is an emphasis on fun and entertaining rugby at the end of the week. For the five New Zealand players called into the Barbarians for the game against the All Blacks – loose forward Dillon Hunt, lock Dominic Bird, prop Atu Moli, first-five Richie Mo’unga and halfback Mitchell Drummond – (all of whom will join the All Blacks in France afterwards) the expectations will remain the same, but the latter two in particular have real opportunities to push themselves into the frame for Steve Hansen’s squad next year. Good performances for the Barbarians, coached by Robbie Deans, at Twickenham on November 5 will help that progression. Mo’unga, 23, was outstanding for the Crusaders this year and helped navigate the franchise to its first Super Rugby title since 2008. Drummond, also 23, wasn’t far behind in terms of his positive influence on Scott Robertson’s team. The five players will leave for London on Sunday. The first job for Mo’unga, who spent last week in Brisbane as
Richie Mo’unga is clearly already in the All Blacks frame. cover for Barrett, and Drummond (and Bird) will be to attempt to win another national provincial title for Canterbury in their premiership final against Tasman in Christchurch the day before. It would be unfair to suggest first-five Mo’unga, who is yet to play a test, has gained on Lima
Sopoaga following the latter’s performance for the All Blacks in the defeat to the Wallabies in Brisbane. But there is no doubt Hansen’s men missed the pace and defence-splitting running ability of the injured Beauden Barrett at Suncorp. At his best, Sopoaga can also
be an explosive and elusive runner, but there was little evidence of that on Saturday night. Also, it was his poor pass which was intercepted by Reece Hodge for the Wallabies’ first try and he turned the ball over several other times. Sopoaga had a brilliant debut against the Boks back in 2015 and should bounce back from this, but it highlighted how far ahead Barrett is. One of the Hurricanes player’s greatest gifts is his pace and that can create opportunities out of nothing for the All Blacks, who often looked disjointed and sluggish on attack in Brisbane. Mo’unga’s ability to get in behind the defence for the Crusaders with his step and pace was a major reason why their offence worked so well on their march to the title. For Drummond, the opportunity at Twickenham and behind next month is probably even greater. Mo’unga has Barrett, Sopoaga and probably Damian McKenzie in front of him. With Tawera KerrBarlow heading to La Rochelle in France after the November tour, Drummond is in the perfect position to push for the All Blacks’ third halfback spot behind Aaron Smith and TJ Perenara. The gap between Smith, Perenara and Kerr-Barlow has been too large for the All Blacks selectors to talk about other halfbacks in the mix but now Drummond has a chance to stake his claim. For Mo’unga and Drummond, who with their three other New Zealand Barbarian team-mates will assemble with the All Blacks for the French leg of the tour (a test against France in Paris on November 11 and a France XV in Lyon three days later), the opportunity is real – long lunches or not. - NZME

The Telegraph ranked Toro Rosso as the second best performing team in the race saying Hartley and Russian Daniil Kyvat were fighting for their futures and “(this) showing will be a positive moment towards that”. Unfortunately for Kyvat, he has already been cut for Mexico. 2) En.f1i.com rated Hartley at 6.5 out of 10. “Hartley had it all to learn and never turned a wheel wrong. Knowing he was going to start on the last row, he didn’t force the issue in Q1. After a poor start he slowly but surely climbed up the order on a two-stop strategy as well as continually improved his lap times.”
Brendon Hartley: ‘Did a good job on his F1 debut’ 3) The Independent (UK). David Tremayne wrote a piece based around the 20-year-old Belgium-born Dutch driver Max Verstappen, who is seen as the rising challenger to Lewis Hamilton. “Together with the likes of Esteban Ocon, Stoffel Vandoorne and Carlos Sainz, who are already racing in F1, and upcomers from the lower echelons such as Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris
and George Russell, Verstappen is F1’s future.” No mention of Hartley there. 4) Sky Sports ...gave Hartley a 7 out of 10 rating but noted his inability to pressure team-mate Daniil Kyvat, who has struggled in the F1 ranks. “In the circumstances of driving a car he was previously completely unfamiliar with, Brendon Hartley did a very good job ...
with no discernible costly errors along the way. “But in the context that F1 never is, never should be and never will be, a finishing school, the New Zealander fared less impressively.” 5) The BBC’s chief F1 writer Andrew Benson reckoned. - “Hartley made a solid debut ... he qualified 0.8secs slower than Kvyat, struggling to get the best out of the difficult Pirelli tyres over one lap, and finished 13th, three places behind his team-mate. “But Hartley spent the vast majority of the race stuck behind slower cars who he was unable to overtake because they had more powerful engines. And on the handful of laps in which he was in clear air, he was very quick.” 6) Overdrive.in. “Le Mans winner, Brendon Hartley, did a good job on his F1 debut.” - NZME
All Blacks’ lead cut The All Blacks’ lead atop the World Rugby rankings has had a decent bite taken out of it following Saturday’s defeat to the Wallabies. The world champions went into the third Bledisloe Cup clash in Brisbane with a lead of 5.38 ranking points over second placed England. That gap has been reduced to 3.69 points following the 23-18 defeat. Despite the loss the All Blacks still look set to mark eight years atop of the World Rugby rankings, sitting on 93.83 points. England don’t have a chance to close the gap until they face Argentina next month. - NMZE
Call-up shocks Duffie Code-hopping winger Matt Duffie was scrambling to contact his travel agent after being named in the All Blacks’ northern test tour squad. Expecting a pass from Steve Hansen and his selectors, the Blues and North Harbour flyer had booked himself in for a well-deserved holiday in Rarotonga. But instead of the Polynesian warmth, he’ll now prepare for a chilly European autumn. The 27-year-old said he was shocked by the call-up. “It’s awesome, it’s one of those things that you never really think is going to happen and you’re lucky enough that it does,” Duffie said. - AAP
Ioane in line for gong Rieko Ioane is all but certain to win this year’s World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year award after being nominated yesterday. The speedy 20-year-old is one of three players – alongside Argentine Emiliano Boffelli and Frenchman Damian Penaud – to be nominated for the gong, which will be handed out at the organisation’s awards night on November 26. Ioane has enjoyed a stunning 2017, dislodging star winger Julian Savea from the left flank and scoring eight test tries. - NZME
Emotional victory Martin Truex Jr. didn’t feel a sense of urgency to win Monday’s race at Kansas Speedway because of its playoff implications, not with his spot in the next round safe following a victory at Charlotte. No, the sense of urgency was much more personal. Truex learned overnight that one of his crew members, Jim Watson, died of a heart attack while in town for the race. So with a heavy heart, Truex climbed into his No. 78 Toyota and overcame two early mistakes to win a wild playoff elimination race. “We were racing for Jim today,” Truex said after emerging from his car. “He was a heck of a guy.” - PA
Verstappen angry man Daniel Ricciardo’s young team-mate Max Verstappen has accused F1’s rulemakers of “killing the sport” and called on fans to boycott next year’s US Grand Prix after he was stripped of a podium spot. Verstappen appeared to have completed a remarkable comeback by passing Kimi Raikkonen on the final lap to finish third. But he was handed a five-second penalty after he was adjudged to have gone off the track when he made his move on the Finn. The 20-year-old left shaking his head before taking aim at the FIA. “With these stupid decisions you really kill the sport,” Verstappen said. - PA

‘Uncle Bigsy’ inspired GAB All Blacks legend Richie McCaw’s uncle John McLay, the man who inspired him to become a Great All Black, has passed away. McLay, known to McCaw as Uncle Bigsy, died from complications related to Huntingdon’s Disease. His funeral will be held in Ashburton tomorrow. McCaw, who played an incredible 148 tests for the All Blacks and who will go down in history as being one of the best ever to put on the black jersey, credited McLay for his drive to succeed. He wouldn’t say it as such but many would opine that it was his uncle who put him on the path to greatness. In his best-selling book Richie McCaw – The Open Side, the loose forward talked about a significant conversation he had with McLay. It was held at McDonald’s in Timaru. McCaw had been selected for trials for the 1999 New Zealand under-19 squad and was showing his uncle the summer programme
they had been given to keep fit. McCaw writes: “You want to be in the New Zealand under-19s,” Uncle Bigsy said. “Do you want to be an All Black?” McCaw answered in the affirmative, so a serviette was produced and the pair mapped out how he was going to achieve that goal. While in his first year at Lincoln University studying Agricultural Science, McCaw wanted to make the New Zealand U19s and Canterbury U19s. The following year, he wanted to make the New Zealand Colts. From there, he would make the Canterbury U21s and, following that, the Canterbury senior team. They figured that, after the 2003 World Cup, a few players would head overseas and he would make the Crusaders and, everything going to plan, the All Blacks in 2004. Uncle Bigsy didn’t stop there, making McCaw commit to being a Great All Black. McCaw couldn’t summon the courage to write it out in full, so he
One of our greatest All Blacks, Richie McCaw was inspired by Mid Canterbury’s John ‘Bigsy’ McLay. scribbled GAB and then, under his uncle’s watchful eye, signed it and later pinned it to a cupboard back home in Kurow. Given McCaw’s genius for openside flank play, the chances are he
would have made it at anything, but Uncle Bigsy’s role should not be minimised. With McCaw’s signature, he had effectively signed his first contract, which owed everything to
intrinsic motivation and nothing to monetary reward. As it turned out, McCaw played for the All Blacks in 2001, a little less than two years after signing the ‘contract’. His GAB status was sealed a few years later when he was named Tana Umaga’s successor as All Blacks captain. McLay, a loose forward who played more than 100 games for Mid Canterbury, including a memorable match against the British & Irish Lions at the Ashburton Showgrounds in 1983, got his nickname due to his large feet. It is said that as a 13-year-old pupil at Christchurch St Andrew’s College, he required size 12 shoes. Like McCaw, McLay was known for his toughness. In a Guardian interview last year he said: “In all my rugby games, I only ever left the the field once because of injury. “It was pretty physical on the paddock in those days, but I loved that.” - NZME
Perry fulfilling every young kid’s dream By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
From prepping for the Mitre 10 Cup final with the Tasman Makos, Tim Perry will now be packing his bags, ready for the opportunity of a lifetime as part of the All Blacks squad for the Northern Tour. “It has been a busy 48 hours, it has all been pretty overwhelming and definitely a shock,” he said. The prop was called in to the All Blacks squad earlier in the year as injury cover, but never took to the paddock and returned home relatively quickly. “I thought I was just going in as injury cover. It was something I was going to pursue as it is every young kid’s dream to be an All Black,” he said. “They gave me a few things to work on but I didn’t hear much after that.” The former Mid Canterbury Hammer found out about his selection in a rather special way, with all his Makos team-mates present. “We were getting ready for the final and were about to start a review and my phone was buzzing, and then my name popped up on the screen and my team-mates went crazy,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting it and it was a really special way to find out.” The selection does come with a sting in the tail however, as he will miss the Mitre 10 Cup final against Canterbury, something he played an integral part in throughout the season. “I was in the gym the other day and saw David (Havili) and he said he wouldn’t be playing the final because they left before it,” he said. “It is a shame as we have had a challenging season and I am really gutted I can’t be there, but I am excited to be going so it is a weird feeling. “I have full faith in the boys that they will be able to go down there and do the job.” While it has been a busy time responding to all the messages he has received since the announcement, the son of former All Black Grant Perry has not had time to think about exact details of the tour. “I have been really busy replying to everyone and I have been a bit overwhelmed with messages,” he said. “I’ve just been going to training like normal to get myself ticking over and to help the boys prep for the final, and I really haven’t had time to think about the tour. “If I am going to get an opportunity to pull on the black jersey I am going to grab it with two hands.”

In brief
Morris, Passito top combo Jillian Morris’ season looks set to gain further momentum at Wingatui today where she rates Passito as her best chance. The Christchurch-based jockey has retained the ride aboard the Steven Prince-trained fiveyear-old in the White Robe Lodge Handicap (1200m) following their victory at Gore. Passito was resuming there following a six month break and she led all the way to defeat last season’s NZBloodstock Airfreight Stakes winner Showemup. “She’s quite a smart mare and I think she surprised Steven a wee bit, he thought she would be competitive but maybe not win first-up,” Morris said. “He thinks quite a bit of her and she bounced out and put herself right there and got to the line really strongly.” Passito, who will drop back from Rating 90 company to 80, has drawn well and has won second-up in the past. Morris is now back to full health and fitness after a nasty fall at Ashburton a year ago that

Winx can’t be faulted Wonder mare Winx is in the best possible condition ahead of her bid for a third $3 million Gr.1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley. “She’ll be cherry ripe for Saturday, everything’s perfect,” trainer Chris Waller said. “When you put up a challenge to Winx and other great champions they rise to it.” Winx will be chasing a staggering 15th Group One success. - NZME
Savvy Dreams returns Group One performer Savvy Dreams is showing the benefit of a good break. Third behind Bonneval in last season’s New Zealand Oaks, she was turned out after an autumn campaign across the Tasman where her best effort was a fourth placing in the South Australian Derby. “She’s really strengthened up and looking great,” said Grant Cullen, who trains the daughter of Savabeel with Guy Lowry. - NZME
Hasahalo for Soliloquy Passito and Jillian Morris in winning form. side-lined her for 10 months. “I broke my collar bone and it didn’t heal properly so three months later I had to have
more surgery, it was quite a bad break,” the 33-year-old said. “I also fractured three vertebrae in my lower spine and my whole
right side was black and blue. “It takes a while to build up fitness after a long time off, but I’m back there now.” - NZME
A back-up plan is in place for the talented filly Hasahalo, who was scratched from Monday’s Gr.2 Sarten Memorial (1400m) due to the rain-affected track. “She’s nominated for the Soliloquy Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday,” trainer Stephen McKee said. - NZME

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): That thing that’s not working is really and truly done. You can jiggle it and unplug it until the end of days, and it’s still not going to work. So accept it, toss it, and go looking for something new. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You had rules for yourself, and it turns out they don’t all apply anymore. You need new ones, but not yet. This is a time of questioning, poking around at the system and experimenting with what might work. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Blood is thicker than water, which is why you have to be nice to the person who seems intent on driving you crazy. Making concessions for family is just part of being in one. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): When you pay for a mistake, try to pay only once. Be like the animals. They pay one time per mistake. They don’t dwell in guilt and shame and bad memories. Keep moving along. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You don’t have to be good at it the first time or ever. But you’ll be better for giving it a whirl. Believe this, and take it to every cell and atom of your being: The only ones who truly fail are the ones who never try. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You can give the same performance to your bathroom mirror or millions on television and social media. The numbers don’t change your part of it. So work on your part today, forget the numbers. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Your words have creative power. Their meaning and the way you give them will make things happen quickly today: good and bad – it all depends on what comes out of your mouth, luckily you’ve control over it. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You don’t want to brag, but it wouldn’t hurt to talk about what you’ve been up to. Otherwise, you’ll miss out on opportunities. Don’t worry: You can be modest and still express the truth about what you do. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Most likely, the ideal circumstance will go masquerading as something far, far less than. Consider that the ideal circumstance may be ideal precisely because rising above it is what’s required. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): If it makes you feel good at the end of the day, do it. If not, don’t justify an action by trying to convince yourself that there are important reasons you must. The proof of an action will be in the results. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): People are overlooking the spirit of compassion to choose something with more charge – such as self-righteousness or arrogance. Kind is usually best. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The magic of lowered expectations will play a part in today’s mood. When you’re not expecting much you can take each interaction and experience at face value which will be a pretty high value indeed.

Sport Halep thinking positive Simona Halep says she is a work in progress but her up-and-down 2017 has prepared her well for an assault on the WTA Finals in Singapore. The world No.1 scored a hard-earned 6-4 6-2 win over Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia yesterday, and acknowledged her battle with an ankle injury has steeled her for the battle to retain the sport’s top spot at year’s end. She says she’s thinking positive now after a dark period following her injury during the claycourt season in Rome.

More than 100 potential tennis stars battled it out on the courts of the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre over the long weekend in the Ashburton Trust Junior Open. It was a mixed weekend for the local players, who dominated the younger grades, but
found the competition from visiting players a bit too much to handle. Allenton’s Flynn Ness was runner-up in the 16 to 18 year old boys’ doubles, pairing up with George McAleer. The Wakanui and Allenton pairing of Jacob Adam and Jakes Parsons won the 10 and under doubles competition.
It was an all Mid Canterbury sweep in the eight and under boys’ doubles, with Isaac Adam and Josh Gilbert finishing runners-up to Riley Breen and Jamie King. Mid Canterbury tennis coach Andre van Rooyen said that it was great to see how well the Mid Canterbury based players performed over the week-
end, especially in the younger grades. They were up against a large number of competitors from Otago and South Canterbury, as well as Christchurch and several who had travelled down from Nelson to compete. Regular interclub tennis will resume this week for the second round of competition.
Kiwis select youthful side for RLWC opener Kiwis boss David Kidwell has punted on an inexperienced side to take on Samoa in Saturday’s Rugby League World Cup opener against Samoa, naming four potential debutants in his projected matchday XVII.
Eels centre Brad Takairangi is set to make his test debut in Auckland, slotting in for a crocked Dean Whare, who tweaked his ankle in training. Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Isaac Liu and Danny Levi have all

been named on the bench, while Addin Fonua-Blake is in the extended 21-man squad. Kidwell made no apologies for punting on youth and inexperience, having lost a score of regulars to injury, defection and unavailability.
Kiwis: Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Dallin WateneZelezniak, Gerard Beale, Brad Takairangi, Jordan Rapana, Kodi Nikorima, Shaun Johnson, Marty Taupau, Thomas Leuluai, Adam Blair (c), Kenny Bromwich, Joseph Tapine, Simon Mannering. Inter: Nelson AsofaSolomona, Russell Packer, Isaac Liu, Danny Levi, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Peta Hiku, Te Maire Martin, Addin Fonua-Blake.
Rugby World Cup-winning All Black Andy Ellis will play for the Barbarians against the country of his birth next month. Ellis, a 28-test halfback who came off the bench in the 2011 World Cup final, is likely to captain the Baabaas against the Kiwi side. He skippered the London-based invitational side to a 31-31 draw against South Africa last year, as well as wins over Fiji and the Czech Republic. The ex-Crusader and five other New Zealanders will play in the Twickenham clash on November 4.
Ekenasio on edge Former Silver Ferns shooter Ameliaranne Ekenasio is on edge ahead of her return to international netball in this weekend’s Fast5 world series in Melbourne. Ekenasio is part of a 10-strong Fast5 Ferns squad chasing a fifth straight title in the abridged version of the game. The 26-yearold shooter returns just four months after the birth of son Ocean, part of a young squad featuring some of New Zealand’s rising talent. “It’s a pretty big challenge. I’m excited and nervous at the same time.”
