Serving up Christmas By Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

More than 140 people played their part in the biggest Christmas lunch in town yesterday when the Tinwald Memorial Hall doors were opened up to the community for the annual Community Christmas Lunch. People were lined up outside the venue an hour before the

doors even opened and there was plenty of excitement and good spirit among all of them. Inside, the hall was abuzz with activity as the huge group of volunteers, who had all given up their own Christmas Day to help out, busied themselves with jobs while awaiting things to kick off. Some were new to the gig, others have been coming for years

and there was a strong mixture of both youth and experience among them, fulfilling roles from serving food, to hosting people at tables. All were under the watchful eye of two of the main reasons why the annual event is so successful, Ann Allott and Dan Lysaght. Allott handles the organisation

each year with aplomb while Lysaght, is the man behind the food and his offerings yesterday look and smelt as good as any other year before. Roast lamb, turkey, ham, mustard and the usual suspects, of potatoes, peas, carrots and corn filled the main course menu while dessert consisted of Christmas pudding and custard, pavlo-

va, fruit salad, raspberries, red and green jelly and ice cream. Everyone in attendance was treated to some live Christmas music to help lift the festive spirit. The day is run thanks to the support of local individuals, families, organisations and businesses who make the day possible.

Being busy is Cameron’s happy place In October four new faces won themselves seats around the Ashburton District Council meeting table. Reporter Sue Newman talks to those new councillors about why they stood for council and what they hope to achieve this term.

S

he might spend her working day across the three Ashburton pharmacies she owns, but with a good team of locums and pharmacy staff, Carolyn Cameron says she has plenty of time to devote to her new role as an Ashburton District councillor. For her, serving time as a councillor is about having an opportunity to be part of a team that is rewriting the shape of Ashburton’s CBD and creating the framework for the district of the future. “I decided to stand because of the town centre, the CBD and the way the town is going. I wasn’t happy and I feel I represent a lot of people who have the same concerns. I want this to be a really great town,” she said. Through talking to people coming into her pharmacies, she said she frequently heard people saying they were disappointed in the state of the town centre. Its current state did nothing to attract people into the town. “We want people to come here because they want to come to an attactive place. Our town centre needs to be representative of the people who live here. We’re not a scruffy people and yet the centre of our town makes it look like we’re going out of business.” AWAITING COPY Ad Number: 501017.51 Artwork: 501017BY Size: 9.4x8 Description: MOT Promo Account: Colour: Filename: 501017BY

First term Ashburton District councillor Carolyn Cameron is looking forward to being part of the new council team. PHOTO SUE NEWMAN 11219-SN-0030 Cameron’s interest in standing for council was sparked by a stand-off between retailers and the council over free parking in the town centre. That involvement piqued her interest in wider council issues. While the new council term has just begun and councillors are still getting to know one another, Cameron said it seemed to be a team of equals with a mayor who was easy to ask for advice. Like anyone taking on a new job, a new councillor had a lot to

learn, but there was a genuine attitude of willingness to help and guide from more senior councillors, Cameron said. “It’s another challenge and I enjoy that. I know this is going to be challenging and I’m very grateful to be elected.” While the district’s infrastructure should be a council’s main focus, it was also important it was involved in wellbeing issues and with Ashburton’s population growing and more older people in the mix, those wellbeing issues

would become more important and relevant, she said. Cameron works fulltime-plus and said it was simply a matter of being organised so she could dedicate the time needed to her new role. Spur-of-the-moment events would always be an issue, but good planning means the things that must be done, get done. “If I’m not at council I’m working or playing bridge. If you’ve got high energy you’re motivated and I’m motivated. You need en-

ergy around the council table.” Cameron grew up in rural Ashburton and still has family living in the area. She lives in Rolleston, but her intention had always been to move to Ashburton when her last child left school. That’s happened and she’s on the move after Christmas to her new home in Tinwald. “I’m really looking forward to the move. “This has always been my community, but this means I’ll now be living in it.”

Reliving his Guardian ‘glory’ days By Heather Mackenzie

Photographers@theguardian.co.nz

K

evyn Begg remembers his Ashburton Guardian delivery days with a kind of nostalgia reserved for days gone by. It was the beginning of World War Two and he was 12 years old. Begg and his trusty bike, with an apple box on the front, spent seven years pedalling their way around Ashburton, making sure the paper got through. “My run went along West Street, left into Walnut Ave, right along Farm Road, down Middle Road and back to the corner where I started. It took about an hour to an hour-and-a-half to complete.” Before the papers could be delivered it was the job of the boys to roll and fold the papers. “We used to go into the Guardian to get the papers.” Begg had 108 papers to take care of before he began his delivery run. “If you rolled the paper really tightly, and folded it, it would break. Good way of getting back at customers they were not too keen on,” he smiled. After Begg had been doing his round for a while, he asked his boss if he could change it and go the other way round. “This was so I could end my deliveries closer to home and save myself a long bike home.” His boss said that was fine. “He didn’t mind what way round I went, just as long as all the papers got delivered.”

However, this small change didn’t suit everybody. One of his customers didn’t appreciate the paper being 10 minutes later than normal. He went straight to Guardian owner at the time, William Bell, to complain. Bell himself then came down to the printing room and told Begg off over the delivery time change. “I said to my boss. That’s it I’m finished.” He didn’t want to work for somebody who spoke to him like Bell had.

awkward places too. “I got pretty good at landing it in the gutter, in a tree, or a puddle if it had rained.” The odd grumpy customer wasn’t all Begg had to contend with. The weather could throw the occasional curve ball his way too. As if biking around in a howling nor’west wasn’t bad enough, winter snow could also add to the seasonal drama. “I remember one time in the snow, I had to push, not ride, but push my bike around. There were

I was only bitten once by a dog. And that was all the Christchurch Press delivery boy’s fault

Begg’s boss then marched upstairs and told William Bell that the paper boys were his responsibility and no-one else’s and Bell had no right to be so rude to Begg. “Funny to think the owner of the newspaper was told off because of me.” Begg had the last laugh though. From then on he would make sure the paper was not only 10 minutes later, but he’d throw it in

car tracks on the road, but they were no use to me at all, as I had to be on the footpath.” Thankfully the fish and chip shop in The Triangle was really good at supplying them with hot chips on a cold day. “For six pence we would get a huge parcel of chips.” He would put them in the apple box with his papers. “I would deliver a paper, have a chip, deliver another paper, have another chip,

and so it would go until I ran out of chips or papers.” “I was only bitten once by a dog,” he said proudly. “And that was all the Christchurch Press delivery boy’s fault. He would hit the dog with the press, so when I raised my arm to throw the paper, he thought I was going to hit him too and he nipped me.” Not one to let a small thing like a bite put him off, Begg went on to make friends with the dog. “It turned out he was a lovely animal.” Friendship established, the dog would carry the paper inside for him. “I would give him the paper and off he’d go with it in his mouth.” The one animal on his round he could not make friends with was an errant magpie on Farm Road. “It would attack me as I biked past the trees and make my head bleed,” he said. About as annoying for Begg as the dive-bombing magpie was, the arduous process of getting a new bike tyre was worse. Approval to purchase a new tyre had to come from Wellington. “We had to go to Hopkins Bike Shop and fill out the form. Mr Hopkins would then send it off to some government department in Wellington, who would take up to two weeks to approve the request.” This system clearly didn’t work as there was no way of knowing exactly when the tyre would need to be replaced and the boys

couldn’t cool their heels for two weeks awaiting approval. Plus biking on shingle roads meant their tyres needed to be regularly replaced, at a cost of around two weeks’ wages each tyre. Mr Hopkins could also see the lunacy in this system and devised a plan to get around it. He simply ordered tyres in advance. Begg would go into the shop and say he needed a new tyre. “Here you go, fill out this form. I’d do what I was told and I’d get the tyre there and then. That form would be sent off to get approval for the next tyre I needed.” Another person on his round Begg remembers fondly is Raymond Tucker, owner of Tuckers Sports Shop that was on West Street for years One day Tucker asked him if he could put the paper in the mailbox rather than throw it on the lawn. “He told me he would make it worth my while if I could.” It didn’t make much difference to Begg, so he agreed to do so. “Every Christmas after that, there was always a box of chocolates in the mailbox for me, come fishing season a fishing licence would be in there too,” he said. Taking up work on the family farm meant his Ashburton Guardian delivery days came to an end. Begg said he really enjoyed his paper round. “I loved it. I got on well with other boys and we always had fun.”

Spike in burglaries sparks warning By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton Police are warning people not to relax over the holiday season when it comes to keeping your home secure. A post on the Ashburton Noticeboard Facebook page last week warned of a European male scoping out houses in the Allenton area and walking up someone’s driveway. Police were called, but the person had hidden themselves by the time they arrived. Acting Senior Sergeant Janine Bowden said they were aware of this incident and that inquiries were ongoing. The post on Facebook said there had been a spike in burglaries in the Allenton area in recent weeks, and Bowden said they do see an increase in burglaries, thefts and dishonesty offences from residential properties over the summer months. “If you witness an incident of this nature happening, we urge you to call 111 and anyone with information that may assist after an incident has happened should call 105,” she said. “While the holiday season may be on your mind – it’s not time to relax when it comes to keeping your home and property secure. “Mid Canterbury Police see an increase in burglaries, thefts and dishonesty offences from residential properties over the summer months. “We urge you to be mindful of the following areas so you don’t need to call us this summer.”

Festive home security advice Home security to deter burglars: ■■ Lock your doors and windows. ■■ Record the serial numbers of expensive electronic items and photograph these and other valuables, email images to your home email for vault storage. ■■ Keep valuables out of sight, i.e. jewellery, cameras and electronic games. ■■ Install an alarm system, get sensor lights ■■ Keep garden sheds and garages locked when not in use. ■■ Keep hedges or plants around doors and windows well-trimmed, don’t give the burglar a place to hide. ■■ Stop your mail and paper if you are going away or arrange for someone to collect them. ■■ Keep the house secure when you are out

in the garden or yard. ■■ Note down registrations of any suspicious vehicles, often burglars will scope out the place beforehand. ■■ Join or form a Neighbourhood Support group. For those in our rural communities: ■■ Check your boundaries and fencelines on a regular basis. ■■ Clearly tag your animals. ■■ Remove keys from unattended vehicles. ■■ Mark or engrave tools with your licence number. ■■ Don’t leave firearms in vehicles. ■■ Always lock your property and auxiliary buildings when you leave, even if it’s only for a short time.

Going on holiday: ■■ Make arrangements for your mail and newspaper to be stopped or collected by a friend or neighbour. ■■ Hide valuable items, financial documents and spare keys to vehicles. ■■ Lock your garages and any sheds. ■■ Set timer switches on lights and/or radios. ■■ Don’t mention it on your voicemail if you will be away from home for any time. ■■ Be aware that burglars have access to social media. If you are going away don’t post this publicly on your social media. ■■ Get a neighbour or friend to make regular checks on the property. They can

even close curtains in the evening and turn lights on to give the appearance that someone is home. Unwanted visitors: ■■ Always be on your guard when anyone you’re not expecting turns up at your door. ■■ Genuine callers will normally make appointments first and will carry identification with their photograph on it, they will not ask for money up front. ■■ Be wary of people calling up stating they are from the bank asking for your personal details such as account numbers, full names, address, passwords or PIN numbers etc … if it sounds unusual it will be.

OUR VIEW

Your journey is part of your holiday W

ell that’s Christmas done and dusted for another year. The presents have been given, food has been cooked in vast quantities and eaten, alcohol consumed and today is likely to be one of slothful regrets – too much eaten, too much money spent. Today many Kiwis will be wondering what the fuss and expense was all about, whether it was all really necessary, whether a simple family gathering was all that was needed without all the trimmings. But that, it seems is what we do, no matter how much we end up trying to pare things back, old habits kick in and we do

Sue Newman

SENIOR REPORTER

what we’ve always done – gone overboard. But it’s done and we can now look forward to a golden Kiwi summer. It’s a southern hemisphere oddity that our long school holidays and the main holiday period for many people are also part of the great Kiwi shutdown over the Christmas and New Year period. For many people planning for the festive season

also means planning for a family holiday and that creates a huge amount of stress. They’ve got it right in the northern hemisphere, where there’s a festive break and then life gets back to normal at the start of January with the mid-year summer signalling the annual holiday season. We’re a victim of geography on that one. For many, summer holidays mean packing the kids and kit in the car, offloading the cat at a cattery or dog at a doggery, fuelling up and hitting the road. It’s the Kiwi dream and knowing that holiday is on the horizon gets many through the long working year. Holidays mean different things

to different people. For some it’s weeks of idleness spent at a seaside or lake-side bach, for others it’s staying with friends or family and yet others will be pitching a tent or settling the camper or caravan in a special spot. It’s a time of recharging, a time for reflecting and a time for looking at the year ahead. Getting to the place where we can chill out and contemplate what was and what might be unfortunately means travelling our over trafficked roads in the company of thousands of Kiwis just like us, hell-bent on getting where they’re going as quickly as possible. While we might accept crowded locations, crowded roads are

something else. It’s hot, traffic is bumper-to-bumper, the kids are whining and tempers are flaring. It’s a recipe for disaster, for patience running out. We’re all desperately trying to get somewhere at this time of the year, we’re all hot and tired, but we all need to get there unscathed. If there’s any message we should be taking on holiday it’s to ensure we, and our family, arrive at our holiday destination, and return home again, safely. Remain alert, drive to the conditions, don’t take risks and drive in a way that ensures we’re all here to enjoy 2020. Better to arrive 30 minutes later than you planned than to arrive dead, on time.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Thursday, December 26, the 360th day of 2019. There are five days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On December 26, 1996, 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado. (To date, the slaying remains unsolved.) On this date: In 1799, former President George Washington was eulogised by Col. Henry Lee as “first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen”. In 1879, in Christchurch, 30 Catholic Irishmen attacked an Orange (Protestant) procession with pick-handles, while in Timaru 150 men from Thomas O’Driscoll’s Hibernian Hotel surrounded Orangemen and prevented their procession from taking place. In 1917, during World War One, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation authorising the government to take over operation of the nation’s railroads. In 1947, heavy snow blanketed the Northeast, burying New York City under 26.4 inches of snow in 16 hours; the severe weather was blamed for some 80 deaths. In 1980, Iranian television footage was broadcast in the United States, showing a dozen of the American hostages sending messages to their families. In 1985, Ford Motor Company began selling its Taurus and Sable sedans and station wagons. In 1994, French commandos stormed a hijacked Air France

jetliner on the ground in Marseilles, killing four Algerian hijackers and freeing 170 hostages. In 2000, Michael McDermott, an employee at an internet firm in Wakefield, Massachusetts, shot and killed seven co-workers. (McDermott was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.) In 2003, An earthquake struck the historic Iranian city of Bam, killing at least 26,000 people. Three snowboarders were killed in an avalanche in Provo Canyon, Utah. In 2004, more than 230,000

people, mostly in southern Asia, were killed by a 100-foothigh tsunami triggered by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean. Ten years ago: A 23-year-old Nigerian man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who claimed to have ties to al-Qaida, was charged with trying to destroy a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day. Buddhist monks chanted on white-sand beaches in Thailand and thousands prayed at mosques in Indonesia to mark the fifth anniversary of the Asian tsunami. The rural good, bad (easily our biggest export in the 1950s) remains a dog. It truly is a sick puppy in a sector where the planets have never been so aligned. Star of the stable – horticulture – has taken over from forestry as our third-biggest export earner but, hold all bets on that one in years to come as the Pinetree Prince of the Provinces, Shane Jones, looks to plant the place in pinus radiata.

The bad

Putting aside the absolute horror of March 15 and White Island, on a rural front mycoplasma bovis refuses to go away and, as always when you’re a farmer, it’s been a challenging year climatically. The biggest disappointment though is that, despite record returns across the board for the primary sector, there is an alarming lack of confidence in farming. Most of that is due to a fear of the unknown from government policy. By rights we should be in a farming boom. That we’re not is an indictment on our coalition government.

The ugly

Wool continues to be one of our biggest export products.

Popular rural commentator and radio host, Jaime MacKay takes a look back at the year that was in the rural world.

Record returns for the primary sector in 2019 and beyond. We can expect $48 billion to flood into our export coffers for the year ended June 2020. The much maligned dairy industry will contribute nearly $20 billion of that windfall. Why some in this country have a death wish for that golden goose is beyond me. Meat and wool accounts for another $10 billion and most of that comes from beef, lamb, mutton and venison as strong wool

Social media. Some of the aforementioned politicians (and others of tall-poppy profile) have had to put up with brutal personal attacks that bear no relevance to their political lives or actions. In the good old days there was an element of control when it came to a letter to the editor or a call to talkback radio. Social media is out of control and yet, when used appropriately, it’s a wonderful tool. Twitter, for example, is my go-to rural news source. But for you trolls and anonymous keyboard warriors who want to have a crack, here’s my wish for 2020. Grow a set and put your name to your comments. You are cowardly, bottom-dwelling losers.

The legends never die award

Dame Yvette Williams, Sir Brian Lochore and Sir Peter Snell. Three mighty kauri have fallen. Add that to the nation’s most famous Pinetree being felled in 2017 and it’s been a tough couple of years for our most beloved and iconic sportspeople. And, as I write, I find my friend, and former All Blacks locking partner of Pinetree Meads, Sam Strahan has passed. Bugger!

and ugly of 2019 cian, is a superstar on the world stage but less so on the domestic front (”woke”, by the way, and “learnings” are my most hated words of 2019). Winston is Winston. He definitely has still got his bark, but is he losing his bite? Grant Robertson’s a safe set of hands. After that though, the cabinet cupboard is pretty bare. Shane Jones is amusingly self-deprecating but Jamie Mackay is always suspicious of people who talk about themselves in the third person and who want to make New Zealand the South Pacific’s pine plantation. David Seymour earned rightful kudos for his sterling work around his End of Life Choice Bill. The smiling assassin Judith Collins remained a thorn in the side of both the government and some in her own party. Todd Muller grabbed the bull by the horns in agriculture and climate change. I was tempted to award the top gong to James Shaw (a realist and a rarity in the Green Party) for pulling a rabbit from the hat by getting the Nats to agree to support his Zero Carbon Act, a real example that bipartisan politics can work. But in the end I’ve gone for a politician who, at the beginning of 2019, I didn’t think would see out the year. He staved off the enemy from within and landed some real hits on the accident-prone government around Budget leaks and with the smart use of social media. If he can ditch the pin stripe suit and front up to fieldays in a Swandri and gumboots with some mud on them, I think he’s in with a shot for the 2020 election. Simon Bridges, even though you are sometimes somewhat dorky, you are my politician of the year.

The Roger Douglas memorial ag person of the year

In memory of the man who did more than anyone else in the 20th century to irreparably change the course of farming, albeit using a

full nelson and a chokehold. With that historic perspective in mind, I was very tempted to award this to James Shaw, regardless of whether we loathed or loved his Zero Carbon work. Other notables include Katie Milne, the first female president of Federated Farmers, who has shown many a bloke up in her pragmatic approach to getting the job done, often earning the chagrin of the government in the process; the Ag Proud boys bringing their barbecues to town, bridging the rural-urban divide, portrayed farmers in a most positive light; while young Elle Perriam hit the road and did God’s work for rural mental health with her Will to Live charity. But my ag person of the year

goes to a man who stamped his authoritarian authority on farming in 2019 like no other, and whose actions in 2020 could change the face of farming forever. In person he’s very personable, professionally he’s very prickly. And he’s on a won’t-back-down collision course with farmers over his Essential Freshwater Plan (unless, of course, Winston uses the hand of God to intervene in election year). He appears to have done a good job as Trade Minister but it’s his work as Minister of the Environment that will define 2020. Take a bow David Parker – and take it easy on farmers! Above – Shane Jones. Right – Simon Bridges.

Ferrari sign massive deal Charles Leclerc has signed a long-term contract with Ferrari through to the end of the 2024 season. The Ferrari Academy driver joined at the start of last season, after a year with Sauber, on a deal believed to be to the end of the 2021 season. Following a successful maiden campaign, he has been rewarded with a new contract. Leclerc said: “I am very happy to be staying on with Ferrari. “This past season, driving for the most illustrious team in Formula One, has been a dream year for me. “I cannot wait to enjoy an even deeper relationship with the team after what has been an intense and exciting 2019. “I can’t wait to get going again next season.” Italy’s Corriere dello Sport reported that Leclerc’s annual salary will jump to $9 million Euros ($15 million), making his fiveyear deal worth a staggering $75 million. Well known F1 broadcaster and journalist Will Buxton was floored by the news, saying on Twitter it’s “almost unheard of” for a driver to sign a deal of that length. Leclerc went into 2019 as the No. 2 to team-mate – and fourtime world champion – Sebastian Vettel. He quickly established himself, claiming two race wins – including on Ferrari’s home soil in Italy – and seven pole positions to the one victory and two poles for Vettel. He finished 24 points ahead of the German in the drivers’ standings.

Carter voted top player of the decade Former All Black first-five Dan Carter has been named World Rugby’s player of the decade. Carter beat former New Zealand captain Richie McCaw in the final. There were 16 players up for the honour, and fans voted over a week on head-to-head clashes to determine the ultimate winner. All Black halfback Aaron Smith, first-five Beauden Barrett and outgoing captain Kieran Read were also in the mix. Carter won World Cups in 2011 and 2015, playing a staring role in the latter after many had written him off as past his prime. The 37-year-old played 112 tests, winning 99 of them, after debuting in 2003. A reliable goal-kicker, he has a world record 1598 test points. Carter is also a three-time Super Rugby champion.

Team principal Mattia Binotto has no doubt that with Leclerc as their top driver, Ferrari can again be successful. It will be 13 years next term since their last drivers’ champion, and 12 since they last won the constructors’ championship. Binotto said: “With each passing

Charles Leclerc will be with Ferrari for the next five years. race this year, our wish to extend our contract with Charles became ever more self-evident and the decision means he will now be with us for the next five seasons. “Charles has been part of our family since 2016 and we are

more than proud of the results we are achieving with our Academy. “We are therefore exceptionally pleased to be able to announce he will be with us for many years to come.”

McCaw ‘a machine’

Former All Blacks captain Kieran Read has spoken of the ruthless single-mindedness that drove the success of Richie McCaw as a captain and athlete. Read revealed in his autobiography Straight Eight that, despite countless hours spent training and touring together, they were basically strangers outside the world of rugby. “It was the ultimate professional relationship, a workplace friendship. “I think back to the first time we roomed together, in Sydney with the Crusaders in my first year with the team, and he never once asked me a personal question about my life, family, interests – anything outside the team. “It wasn’t that he was rude; that information was just superfluous to him. “He didn’t need it in his head when he had other things to think about.” Read related the fact the two men had thousands of conversations together, but they were always focused on how to improve the Crusaders or All Blacks sides. This ultimate form of compartmentalisation was what Read thought made McCaw successful. “We toured with the All Blacks and Crusaders for nine years, played alongside each other in countless matches, drank endless coffees together and played a million hands of cards, but outside of the team our relationship was largely non-existent. “I respected that intensely. “He wouldn’t have been able to do what he did if he didn’t have an off switch.” McCaw’s single-mindedness also extended to his training sessions where Read described McCaw as “a machine”. The two men shared similar conditioning routines, both being

in the back row, and Read often got to see first hand the mental and physical strength of McCaw. “If I could keep up with his shadow, I knew I was fit. “His mindset, the way he could push himself to places no one could follow, was one of the most

Top seed out

Bianca Andreescu

US Open champion Bianca Andreescu has pulled out of the ASB Classic. The 19-year-old shot to prominence with an incredible run to the final in Auckland at the start of the year, before going from strength to strength, winning the Indian Wells Open and Canadian Open, and capping off a stunning season by beating Serena Williams to claim an astonishing US Open title. Andreescu had signed on to return to the tournament which kick-started her breakout season, but has pulled out of the event on Tuesday, citing a knee injury. The world number five would have been the top seed at the event, with that honour now going to Williams.

extraordinary things I witnessed. “I’m naturally a hard worker, at least I like to think so, but to see what he could do was absolutely inspirational. “I sometimes turned up for our training sessions more nervous than I would be for a game.

“As gruelling as those hours were for me, I knew I was in a privileged position to be able to test myself against the fittest guy in the team, if not the sport.” Read’s time as All Blacks skipper came to an end at the 2019 Rugby World Cup and his winning-per-

centage of 83 per cent, just like in those training sessions, finished just shy of the 88 per cent record the ultra-focused McCaw finished with. Nevertheless, it’s obvious to all that Read could have asked for no better professional role model.

Ashburton nine-year-old dirt biker Baxter Florance has only been competing for four years, but is already hauling in a substantial amount of trophies and medals. The Guardian’s Heather Mackenzie reports.

Wee racer making waves on the track B

axter Florance may only be nine years old, but he’s already making a big impression in New Zealand dirt bike circles. The large bookshelf in the family lounge groans under the weight of Baxter’s trophies and medals and he’s only been racing for four years. Baxter has always loved bikes of all kinds. His dad Paul said that right from a little lad he was always on a bike of some sort. When the family set off to a race, Baxter’s mountain bike is always included on the list of must-have items. “After he has finished racing for the day, you will find him and his mates mountain biking around the track,” Paul said. Clearly it takes a certain amount of courage and determination to race motocross. It’s hard to reconcile this mild-mannered, quietly-spoken boy with the pocket rocket he turns into on the track. But then as Paul pointed out, to do well in this sport you need to be able to keep a cool head and Baxter was born with one. In other words he was never the kind of kid to attempt a triple backflip off the barbecue patio. “He’s never been a reckless kid. He knows his ability and has confidence in his bike and that helps a lot. When he’s racing his sensible competitive streak takes over.” Naturally ability and a cool head can only take you so far, so along with practising on the family farm, Baxter is also a regular at training and demo days. Of particular help has been New Zealand Honda team rider Peter Broxholme, Boxy to his friends. His training days and bootcamps have proved helpful to the young rider. Paul said that Boxy has taught Baxter a great deal. “He travels around New Zealand taking classes, we try to get Baxter to as many as we can.” As well as talent, Baxter loves the sport. He said even though he feels a bit nervous on the start line, he feels excited too. “My favourite part of racing is the jumps and going through the ruts,” he said. One of the most amazing experiences Baxter had the good fortune to be invited to was the YZ65 Cup, held in February at Mt Smart. Yamaha dealers from all around the country were asked to put forward an eight to 11-yearold 65cc rider. Local Yamaha dealers McKay and Donaldson didn’t hesitate to add Baxter’s name to the list of 24 riders. Described by Yamaha as an opportunity of a lifetime, Paul said the day certainly lived up

to all the hype. “They were treated like pro riders all day.” That meant having a race tent for their bikes and gear, racing in front of the large Pukekohe crowd and access to some amazing riders, like former world circuit rider Josh Coppins. Being treated like professional riders meant that parents were excluded from the areas where the riders were. “That was a bit difficult for my wife and I to deal with, as at all the other races we are normally with him.” But they were the rules, so they did as they were told. Baxter is lucky to have strong family support behind him. Like most parents of successful sporting kids there is a lot of driving, camping at racetracks and expenses. Baxter appreciates all their efforts: “Thank you Mum and Dad,” he said. Paul said they are really grateful to Baxter’s sponsors. Without their financial help we could not attend all the events we do. “Every discount, or offer of help in whatever form is very much appreciated.” Supporting local businesses is also important to Paul: “Cliff Dray and the team at McKay and Donaldson, along with Yamaha New Zealand are really accommodating. “I am very grateful for their support.” In the coming year Paul is hoping to add some North Island races to Baxter’s lists of events. They are also eyeing up moving to the 85cc class in the not-too-distant future. “He needs to grow a bit first,” Paul said.

Boult boosts Black Caps

Black Caps strike bowler Trent Boult said he’s ticked all the boxes ahead of his return to the side for the must-win Boxing Day cricket test against Australia. The paceman has overcome a side injury and bowled for a Victoria XI against the New Zealanders in a warm-up. His inclusion will be a huge relief for a Black Caps side who were hammered in the first test in Perth, and must emerge victorious in Melbourne to keep the three-match series alive. Boult said he’s feeling good and looking forward to playing in front of a bumper crowd at the MCG. The left-arm pace spearhead missed the 296-run first test loss after sustaining the injury in New Zealand’s previous series against England. However, the 30-year-old proved in a warm-up game on Sunday that he was ready to take the new ball again today when his side return to the MCG for their first test since 1987. “I was a proud representative of Victoria yesterday. “It was good fun and nice to get some overs under my belt, field for a bit, and get some time in my legs,” Boult told reporters on Monday. “It’s all going well. “I feel like I’ve ticked the right boxes in terms of my rehab and preparations, and I’m really looking forward to getting out there. “It was more about rhythm and loading from my point of view.”

Black Caps strike duo Tim Southee and Trent Boult. Tom Latham said his teammate was back to his old self, welcome news for New Zealand as they look to level the threematch series. “Boulty is tracking pretty well and he was running in pretty hard,” he said. “He was his usual self in the nets the other day, bouncing around, which is a good sign. “It’s great to have the quality of Trent come back into the side.” New Zealand’s preparations

for the test were disrupted due to extreme heat in Melbourne with one day of their warm-up match against the Victoria XI abandoned before play began. The MCG pitch will be scrutinised heavily after a first-class game between Western Australia and Victoria was abandoned earlier this month because it was considered dangerous. Groundsman Matt Page, however, told reporters on Monday the wicket for the Boxing Day test

would be a fair contest between bat and ball and Boult said he was looking forward to seeing how it played. “We’re probably expecting something definitely different in terms of the wicket here, from how it’s played over the last few years,” he said. “From my point of view, I’m going to be looking to pitch the ball up, swing it around and hopefully pick up some wickets that way.”

■■OPINION

Batsmen need to step up at the G By Dylan Cleaver

U

nless New Zealand improve dramatically with the bat in Melbourne, the long-awaited appearance in the Boxing Day Test could be the lump of coal in the bottom of yesterday’s Santa sack. Last week I railed at the shortcomings of day-night test cricket and in particular the performance of the pink ball in twilight. Under those conditions it is reasonable to give the Black Caps’ top order a mulligan but the difficulties can’t totally mask the feeling that the visitors were ill-equipped to meet Australia’s attack. Being blown away under lights by Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc is one thing; being flummoxed by Nathan Lyon probably carries more long-term concerns. Jeet Raval’s dropping means New Zealand’s only chronically out-of-form batsman is removed from the equation, but there are a couple of others who could do with a score.

Tom Latham has emerged as one of New Zealand’s best openers but he’s played six tests against Australia now and averages in the mid-20s with just two 50s. You could come to Australia with an average in the 50s but they don’t rate you there until you’ve scored runs against them. Henry Nicholls doesn’t need to start looking over his shoulder yet, but he could use a score having failed to go past 50 in his last seven knocks. That’s not a huge run of outs, but when you consider he’d scored four centuries and four 50s in the 14 innings prior to this run, you can imagine he’s getting a little toey. His record against Australia is poor also, though with half the sample size of Latham. Finally, BJ Watling’s mentality looks tailormade for taking on Australia in Australia, but he has struggled his way to a sub-20 average in the “lucky” country. Everybody wants to score runs, but there should be an extra edge for those three. This idea of the Boxing Day Test being not just a day of

cricket but a cultural touchstone is one of the greatest pieces of marketing in sports history. It evokes images of Victorian-era Victorians in post-Christmas reverie tottering gaily alongside the untamed Yarra carrying picnic baskets stuffed full of cold cuts and hard lemonade on the way to see ‘Black Jack’ Blackham and Fred ‘The Demon’ Spofforth take on the auld enemy. Which is a lovely picture … and complete bollocks. It was not until the 1980s that the Boxing Day Test became a thing and not until the mid-90s that crowds regularly in excess of 50,000 started turning up to add several Fosters to already distended bellies. The Boxing Day Test is a phenomenon, but it’s a modern one. There was an astonishing exchange on the UK’s Sky Sports football show this week following another incident of a racist chant or gesture being aimed at a black player, in this case Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger. In-studio analyst Gary Neville, who has spoken passionately, eloquently and with common

sense on the matter in the past again emphasised his point that the groundwork for toxic racism was being laid at the heart of the UK’s political institutions, where anti-immigration rhetoric has become a guaranteed vote winner. Neville’s message was very simple and, you would hope, universal: unless we change a negative conversation around different creeds and cultures we are never going to prevent these crass acts occurring. Neville finished, at which point the cameras went back to Sky host Dave Jones who, presumably under instruction, uttered this: “I am compelled to say they are the opinions of you, Gary Neville, and not those of Sky Sports. “That is my duty.” Talk about letting the air out of the balloon. Honestly, how can someone sensibly tackling the issue of racism in football grounds not be the views of the broadcaster? Jones later went on to a popular social media platform to apologise for his intervention, but the damage was done.

Following in very big footsteps

Every superstar athlete started somewhere. For Black Caps captain and arguably the greatest batsman New Zealand has ever produced Kane Williamson, that somewhere was the cricket nets at Pillans Point School in Tauranga – nets which his father organised the construction of. Williamson grew up a few doors down from the primary school, which he would later attend and play cricket for, and would constantly badger his dad into giving him throw downs in the nets. It was the beginning of an obsession with self-improvement and meteoric rise to the top of the sport. Now, a pair of Tauranga teenagers who honed their craft in those same Pillans Point School nets are following in Williamson’s footsteps. Fergus Lellman and Ben Pomare, former Pillans Point School students, have been named in the 15-strong New Zealand squad for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa early next year. Their selection proves another parallel with Williamson who captained New Zealand at the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. Lellman said making the squad had been a goal “for the last few years” and he was looking forward to testing himself against the best under-19 players in the world. “I’m pretty excited but at the same time you have to take it with a grain of salt and not get too carried away, in the same way that if you didn’t make it you wouldn’t want to get too upset. “It’s so awesome to have the opportunity, it’s a bit surreal to know we’ll be playing against the best cricketers of our age group worldwide. “You’re only going to learn from it and it’s only going to help your game moving forward so I’m really looking forward to it.” He said to make the most of the opportunity he had to “try to stay present”. “I don’t want to get too caught up with the significance looking forward or what might come of it, I just need to keep doing what I’d be doing if it was a club match or a school match and give myself the best chance.” When asked why his old primary school had produced so many good cricketers, Lellman said it was hard to say. “I guess having the nets helps, I know Kane was in those all the time. We’re definitely privileged to have the kind of upbringing where we can play cricket in good facilities. “It’s quite cool for me and Ben to have come all the way from the same primary. He went to Tauranga Boys’ College and I went to Aquinas College but we’ve sort of come back and played for a lot of the same rep teams together.” The ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup runs from January 17 to February 9 next year.

■■ELLERSLIE

Wellwood hoping history repeats Robert Wellwood recorded his first black-type win as a trainer at Ellerslie on Boxing Day last year and he is hoping it will be a fruitful day once again at the Auckland track today. “It was a big thrill to do it on Boxing Day at headquarters,” he said. “It was a good day, so it would be nice if we could back it up and do it again.” That first feature win came courtesy of Hypnos in the Listed Uncle Remus Stakes (1400m), and Wellwood, who trains in partnership with Roger James, will take a strong contingent into the race this year with Group performers Shenanigans and Hasstobegood. Shenanigans won on debut before finishing runner-up behind Scorpz in the Gr.3 Wellington Stakes (1600m) at Trentham last start, and his trainers are looking for a solid run from the son of Ocean Park ahead of a return to Trentham next month. “The 1400m of the Uncle Remus is probably going to be a bit short

M2

for him, but hopefully it’s just a nice run that bounces us into the Levin Classic (Gr.1, 1600m). “He is going to have blinkers on, which could help him.” Stablemate Hasstobegood will also contest the Uncle Remus Stakes and Wellwood said the performance of the three-year-old filly would dictate the path they navigate ahead. “She ran nicely the other week at Ellerslie [when finishing fourth in the Gr.3 Bonecrusher Stakes, 1400m], but we are just unsure as to whether she gets 1400m or a mile, so we are going to learn a bit on Thursday about where we are going to head with her. “We could sharpen her up and have her racing back over 1200m, which she has excelled at, or we could stretch her out to a mile because she is Karaka Million eligible. “If we believe we can get a mile we may have a crack at the 3YO Classic.” While Hypnos gave Wellwood his first stakes win last year, the

Cambridge conditioner is hoping the gelding can repeat his Boxing Day heroics, but this time in the Dunstan Feeds 1500 Championship Final. The son of Reliable Man heads into the race in winning form, after claiming victory over 1400m at Awapuni earlier this month, and the only concern Wellwood has heading into today is the 60kg Hypnos has been lumbered with. “He has got a lot of weight,” Wellwood said. “But he is racing really well and is back in good form. He has come through the run at Awapuni very well, so we couldn’t be happier with him. “But weight stops trains, so we are just hopeful that he is a class above them.” Everything going to plan, Hypnos will back-up at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day before heading south to Trentham for a Group One assignment. “If he came through the run well on Boxing Day we may look to head to the Rich Hill Mile (Gr.2,

Robert Wellwood 1600m) and then the Thorndon Mile (Gr.1, 1600m). “But we will just take it step-bystep with him.” Wellwood is particularly excited about the prospects of 3-year-old filly Two Illicit who will be aiming for back-to-back stakes victories when she contests the Gr.2 Sky-

City Eight Carat Classic (1600m) today. The daughter of Jimmy Choux boasts a near impeccable formline after two victories and a placing from just three starts, including a last start victory in the Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial 3YO (1500m). “She’s a lovely filly and she’s in grand order,” Wellwood said. “She has ticked every box heading into this, so it would be nice to get another stakes win with her. “She will hopefully head to New Year’s Day also. I think as we start getting up over ground in these fillies races after Christmas she is really going to be a force to be reckoned with.” The James and Wellwood team have been in great form of late, headlined by Concert Hall’s win in the Gr.3 Manawatu Cup (2300m) at Awapuni, and they hope it will continue over the festive season. “It was a terrific result,” Wellwood said. “She will probably head to the City of Auckland Cup (Gr.3, 2400m) on New Year’s Day now.”

■■WINGATUI

Springboard to the Telegraph Pass marks for stablemates Enzo’s Lad and Sensei at Wingatui today could be the start of a series of major attacks by Riccarton trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman, including possibly achieving a five-year goal. Enzo’s Lad and Sensei will clash in the Listed Southern Wide Realty Hazlett Stakes (1200m), an event in which Enzo’s Lad finished seventh in the last two years before going on to win the Gr.1 Telegraph at Trentham in his next start. “We’ve purposely targeted the Wingatui Boxing Day meeting as the sprint has proved an ideal lead-up for the Telegraph with the last three winners of it all having come through the race,” Michael Pitman said, referring to Enzo’s Lad and before him, Signify, who was second in the Listed Wingatui event before beating Start Wondering in the 2017 Telegraph. In each of the past two seasons Enzo’s Lad has gone into the Hazlett Stakes with last-start Riccarton wins, but this time his lead-up performance is a second-up close third behind Don Carlo and Emily Margaret at Riccarton earlier in the month.

Enzo’s Lad

days later in the Gr.3 Stewards Stakes (1200m). “He was held up and unlucky not to win the Stewards, too,” Pitman said. “The plan with him is to hopefully get to the Telegraph then take him to Australia. “We’re putting together a team to take across the Tasman and he’ll be aimed at the Goodwood

in Adelaide in May. “We’re trying to protect his record to hopefully make him as a stallion. In the last 12 months he’s won two Listed races, been second in the Gr.3 Stewards and run third in the Telegraph.” As well as focusing on the Telegraph and a strong Trentham-bound squad, the Pitmans will be attempting to have two

runners in the Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) at Ellerslie on January 25. Ohio Showgirl is already guaranteed a start in the $1 million feature, currently third in the order of entry, while stablemate Lovebug is 12th on the list. “I only bought four horses at Karaka last year and two of them could be running in the Karaka Million. “I’m proud of that fact,” Pitman said. “I’ve had four qualify for the race in the past, but only one run and that drew the outside and had no chance. And that one wasn’t in the class of these two.” Bought by Pitman for $45,000 from Haunui Farm’s Book 1 draft at the National Yearling Sales, Ohio Showgirl has recorded a debut win and a third in Riccarton’s Listed Welcome Stakes (1000m) from four starts, while Lovebug, a $20,000 purchase by Pitman from Haunui’s Book 2 draft, was ninth on debut in the Welcome Stakes then won over 820m at Wingatui. “They’re both going to Ellerslie on January 12,” Pitman said. “It will give them a chance to look at the course.”

“I thought he went massive,” Pitman said. “It was an outstanding run. He had plenty of weight (60kg) and gave weight to two very handy horses.” Enzo’s Lad’s preparation for this season’s Telegraph had been affected by his unsuccessful international ventures, to Hong Kong then England. “He was in quarantine for six weeks after he raced at Royal Ascot and we’ve been treading a fine line with him,” Pitman said. “I just hope the weather plays its part and the Wingatui track comes back from a slow7.” Enzo’s Lad will be ridden by in-form apprentice Tina Comignaghi, while Chris Johnson will be back on Sensei. Johnson last rode Sensei when third equal to Enzo’s Lad in last season’s Telegraph after winning the Hazlett Stakes. Sensei’s two runs this campaign have resulted in an impressive win over Sheezallmine in the Listed Pegasus Stakes (1000m) on the first day of the New Zealand Cup Carnival then an unlucky second to the same northern mare four

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The science indicates that people who describe themselves as lucky tend to notice lucky opportunities more than those who self-describe as unlucky. Exciting luck happens regardless of how you see yourself. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Keep in mind that an idea doesn’t have to be great to inspire. If it sparks enthusiasm, they are moved to act and it catches on. You don’t know what’s going to fly until you put it out there. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Handle the tiny things because they matter a lot. When you think about it, a series of tiny gains and tiny losses has led you to this place. It’s not the size of the habit that matters so much as its trajectory. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): If wisdom were a business, it would be a 24-hour casino where the doors never shut. Wisdom depends on letting life inside. Sometimes life will get the advantage, but usually the house wins. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Have patience and faith in the reciprocity of existence. Things balance out. This is far from a passive approach. Your will counts as a weighty part of the balance. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Surrender is the ultimate act of inaction. If done fully, the next feeling is that of relief, levity, clarity and peace. What do you need to surrender before the year is over? LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): The main event is occurring both on conscious and unconscious levels. It’s a purge of your being that drives you to discard the meaningless as you opt for the choices that reflect your values. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): The spirit of love generated at various times of the week lingers and your mood is cozy with the knowledge that when the heart is fulfilled, there’s not much else that matters. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You’ve a chance to look at your behaviour as a film director might, as though the action were on a storyboard. Choices will be made about how to compose the next few scenes. Be the artist you are. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You want to do the precise thing that will make someone smile. In fact, you make a quest of it. That you care this much already gives the mission a high chance of success. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): The process of becoming is often undetectable but glaringly obvious in hindsight. All you have control over are the behaviours you employ to get there. Keep racking up units of effort and trust it’s working. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You really shouldn’t have to think about yourself very much. When the situation is involving and interesting enough, you don’t worry at all about how you’re doing. If it’s not the case, keep looking for a better scene of which to be a part.

To the victor go the spoils By Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

North Canterbury pacer Heisenberg added his name to an impressive list of previous winners of the Ashburton Trotting Cup on Christmas Eve when he carved out a decisive, but narrow victory. The Robert Dunn trained, John Dunn driven pacer got the call by the narrowest of margins in the $18,400 event from the Paul Court trained pairing of Cast No Shadow (Sam Ottley) and Mon-

golian Cavalry (Blair Orange). Raced by long-time industry participants, Ross and Angela Gordon, Heisenberg has been a model of consistency this season in some big races and was a more than deserving winner of Tuesday’s feature. Dunn was able to get the pacer away quickly from the standing start over the 3200m and when he found the front he was always going to be one of the horses to beat.

After surrendering the lead to race-favourite, Nandolo after 600 metres, he was able to come from behind the pacemaker and do best up the long Ashburton straight to hold on for the win. A son of Art Major, Heisenberg has now won five of his 28 career starts, placing in a further 13 for close to $140,000 in stake earnings. He was one of two winners for the Dunn stable at Tuesday’s meeting with Kensington Bill

winning earlier in the day. Jonny Cox delivered true on his word that One Direction would be hard to beat early in the day when he produced a peach of a drive to get the pacer home impressively for trainers Tony and Lyn Prendergast. Cox was also in the winners’ circle with the smart, Aladdin Sane as well. Locals managed to round out the Mid Canterbury racing year with a couple of winners on the

programme. Rakaia trainer Alan Ford produced the impressive maiden trotting winner, Call This Fun and could not have been more stylish winning at his first race day appearance. Ford’s son Jason did the driving. Ricky May and Brent White combined later in the day to win with smart trotter One Apollo, landing some big bets for punters who came in with heavy support including a $10,000 bet at $3.50.

‘Ruthless and ‘resented’: Read spills on ex-coach Henry NZME Kieran Read says the culture Sir Graham Henry fostered within the All Blacks “needed to change” and Steve Hansen was the man who made it happen. Read describes life as an All Black under the management of Henry and Hansen as two completely different experiences, the former noted for lavishing attention on his star players at the expense of those in the wider squad. Indeed, the way each head coach managed their squads was

the biggest observable difference between the men as far as Read was concerned. The former All Blacks captain describes Henry as a coach that emphasised the importance of the team’s next match over any long-term strategy. That emphasis often led to estrangement within the squad. “Graham was a ruthless competitor with a steely focus on what was important for the game at hand. Therefore, if you weren’t necessary for that week’s job, you could find yourself on the outer

pretty quickly,” Read says in his recently-released autobiography Straight Eight. “It can be a lonely place for a player, standing on the fringe of the All Blacks, never quite knowing where you stand. “I think some of those guys resented the way that made them feel, even though it was never through any malicious intent on Graham’s part.” For Read though, he found that the fact he was a rising star in the side gave him a completely different experience to those on the

outer. “I had got on with Graham well, but much of our relationship was built upon the fact I had quickly become a starter in the side and therefore had the chance to communicate with him daily.” When the time came for Steve Hansen to take over the side in 2012, Read’s observations of elitism within the squad were dealt with by an incoming coach with a fresh attitude to man-management. “The All Blacks within the All Blacks’ mentality needed to change, and he was going to

change it,” Read said of Hansen, though his new boss’s approach still took some time to get used to. “Steve was not without his idiosyncrasies of course. He could be deviously manipulative when he wanted to be, painfully cryptic too, and needed his people to know that ultimately he was in charge. “For all that, though, there was an awful lot of softness underneath, and we could tell that he genuinely cared about all his players in a way that Graham could never fully express.”
