Ready to rodeo for the 50th time By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Sunny skies and big crowds are set to pack out the 50th edition of Methven’s iconic rodeo tomorrow. The hard work has been done by the committee and it is now time for the cowboys and cowgirls to take the spotlight in what is set to be a bumper competition across the board. Open class competitors will be competing for special 50th anniversary buckles and prize jackets, and rodeo secretary Rosa Deeker said entries are as strong as they have been for those grades. “We have 105 entries for the barrel racing this year and we normally have entries in the 80s and I don’t have exact numbers for the other competitions but we have big numbers,” she said. The second division bull riding had to be removed from last year’s event due to Mycoplasma bovis concerns with the bulls being sourced locally, but Deeker said systems had been put in place to allow the event to run this year. Bringing all this action to the crowd for the first time will be a big screen that will show the action from the ring live, which Deeker said organisers were excited about. “We are hoping for a really good crowd given it is the 50th,” she said. “We have a really good area set up for the sponsors and the big screen which is an amazing thing to have. “There will also be a memorabilia tent and there has been a lot of hard work gone in to getting different pieces for that.” Life members of the organisation will also be recognised which will be followed by an after-party at the Methven Resort. Deeker said she was not aware of anyone that was coming from overseas for the event, but there were plenty travelling from the North Island to take part. A three-legged race for students from schools in the Methven area always generates plenty of vocal support from the crowd with Methven Primary School coming out on top last year. Jenkins said there will be a strong police presence in Methven over the long weekend for the rodeo. “A mixture of Ashburton and Christchurch staff will be in attendance,” he said. The wellbeing of the public will be the main focus for the officers, alongside providing assistance for the organisers with any overly intoxicated or problematic behaviour. Additional support will be provided for licensed premises and there will be a strong presence on the roads focusing on road safety. And Jenkins’ advice for rodeo attendees: “Enjoy the day and please approach any police staff with any concerns or queries you may have.” The rodeo began as an offshoot of the Methven A&P Show as a way of raising money and to give the locals another event to be en-

well supported and undertook the mammoth task of building an arena. Renowned rodeo commentator,Craig Wiggins said that the 50 year success story has seen the event rise to become one of the biggest on the annual calendar. “The foresight those early members had has proved to be
successful with over 6000 people attending the event in the past years,” Wiggins said. “The Methven Rodeo is now seen as the largest in the country both in crowd size and numbers of competitors in the arena.” Gates open at 8am with a start time of 8.30am with the grand entry at 1pm.

■■ASHBURTON COLLEGE
Compiling rebuild wish list By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton College principal Ross Preece and his staff are building a wish list that will provide the blueprint for design work on their rebuilt school. The Ministry of Education has committed to spending $60 million to replace the college’s 50-plus-year-old buildings and while he accepts they won’t get everything on the list, the 50 page education brief will make it very clear the kind of school the college wants, Preece said. “It outlines our hopes and dreams for the type of buildings we want. It’s a vision, in the form of a document, on the exact nature of the school we’re requesting, the things that are important to us.” Included were things such as a chessboard of some kind that would provide the new campus with a central point, a variety of flexible teaching spaces, a strong focus on the future, teaching spaces that opened to the outdoors and solar heating options. The document would be given to the ministry’s architects and it would shape the master plan, he said.

“It’s still a work in progress but we’ll be presenting it for sign off at the final board meeting of the year on November 27.” The master plan is scheduled to be completed by July next year. “One of the significant things this will decide will be where the new school is located within the greater campus. I’ll be guided by
the experts on that – it’s a very foolish principal who thinks he is an expert,” he said. The college was fortunate in having plenty of open space and that meant building could start on vacant land along Walnut Avenue, Middle Road or Belt Road but the location of the buildings would be driven by the experts, Preece said.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the rebuild during a visit to the college in March. Initially it will have classroom space for 1350 students but when the project is completed it will have 76 classrooms and the ability to cater for a roll of 1600. The new school is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Aviation and law; hopefully an attractive mix By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Greg Martin has a deal he hopes young lawyers won’t be able to resist – a job with the incentive of a free pilot’s licence thrown in. Like most provincial legal firms, Arrowsmith Law struggles to recruit young lawyers. It doesn’t matter that the work is great, the client contact is first class and the pay is good, young lawyers seem to want bright lights and a city lifestyle, director Greg Martin said. “Recruting is really difficult. It’s not just Ashburton, it’s a South Island thing too, but we feel it acutely in Ashburton,”
he said. The battle for staff is being fought on an uneven playing field and Martin wants to change that by adding in the incentive of learning to fly. As part of the deal he’s offering a young lawyer joining his firm is the opportunity to gain their private pilot’s licence and that’s worth up to $17,000 over two years, but it’s an investment the firm is prepared to make, Martin said. “Finding the right staff is the biggest headache for businesses in Ashburton. It’s a battle trying to persuade people to give it a go. It’s a problem we all have.” Martin has been flying for two years and said the oppor-
tunity to gain his pilot’s licence was one of the reasons he came back to Ashburton to live and work. “Ashburton’s airfield is such great amenity. It’s a fantastic place to learn. The airfield’s just five minutes from town, it has more runways than most and it’s surrounded by uncluttered skies.” He knows the opportunity to gain a pilot’s licence won’t appeal to every law graduate, he just wants one. And once they’re here and realise what the district has to offer, Martin believes there’s every chance they’ll stay. Flying and law are not quite
the odd mix they might seem, as both require attention to detail and a professional approach, he said. For a pilot, the open air space and nearby Southern Alps created a perfect way to explore the district. It also meant the rest of the South Island was just a short flight away, Martin said. “It’s likely to take about two years of flying and fairly hard study, but it’s a hugely rewarding thing do to.” He’s launched his recruitment campaign and hopes the novel package he’s offering will see a new lawyer and aspiring aviator on his team by the end of the year.

Be wary of contracting Legionnaires Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey is warning gardeners to be wary of contracting Legionnaires’ disease this spring. Last year there were 48 hospitalisations from Legionnaires’ in Canterbury, and there have been 12 cases of the disease already confirmed in the region since June this year. Mid Canterbury last had cases in August last year, when two elderly men were hospitalised. Humphrey said Legionnaires’ is a form of pneumonia, which can be contracted from potting mix and compost. “It’s caused by the Legionella bacteria that live in moist organic material and people can catch the disease by inhaling airborne droplets or particles containing the bacteria,” he said. “The bacteria thrive in bags of potting mix and compost.” In Canterbury there is typically a spike in cases in early November that can be attributed to the increased gardening activity over Labour weekend, and with a promising forecast this Labour weekend, now is the time for people to take the necessary steps to avoid catching the disease, he said. The illness may be mild but can sometimes be fatal. It is more common in older people, particularly if they smoke, have poor immunity or a chronic illness. However, sometimes even healthy young people have died from legionella pneumonia. Symptoms can include dry coughing, high fever, chills, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headaches and diarrhoea. Five simple actions gardeners should take are: Open bags carefully using scissors. Wear a well-fitting disposable face mask and gloves, and remember not to touch your mask when gardening. Reduce dust by dampening down potting mix or compost with a sprinkle of water. Work with potting mix or compost in a well-ventilated outdoor area. Thoroughly wash your hands after handling potting mix or compost.

Fifty years of Grey Ghost fishing By Bernard Egan Rightly or wrongly, those who enjoy fishing sometimes get accused of telling tall tales. Usually relating to the size of the one that got away. Tomorrow, members of the Grey Ghost Fishing Club will be sharing a few stories when they gather to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their club. No doubt some of those stories will recount memorable catches but most will be about the good times and camaraderie shared by members over the years. From the early 1900s through to the 1980s the Ashburton River was renowned for the large number of salmon heading upstream and for the size of those fish. Consequently the river attracted many anglers. In the mid-’60s several fishermen, who all worked in various roles at the Ashburton Hospital, would often find themselves fishing together at the Ashburton River mouth after having travelled there individually. It was decided to pool cars and as a result a fishing club was born. In July 1969 seventeen keen anglers met at the Tinwald Tavern for the inaugural meeting of the Grey Ghost Fishing Club. The late John Washington, who was also known as the Great White Hunter, was the first president of the club. The members adopted a Mission Statement which established the club’s principal objective – “To promote and arrange fishing of all forms and provide good fellowship and enjoyment”.

In the early days sea fishing expeditions often took place out of Picton or Havelock. These trips were very successful and no tall tales were needed to describe the catches although it was rumoured it helped having a skipper who was a firm believer in the navy tradition of a tot of rum. Or two. Which club members were happy to provide. The Ahuriri River became a popular and bountiful destination after three club
members Peter Gourdie, Les Read and Dick Smith went on a reconnaissance mission. They stayed in Omarama and the tale of their trip is a legendary part of the club’s history. While enjoying some refreshments they decided to test the theory a fish could be deboned by pushing it over the neck of a beer bottle. The experiment was unsuccessful, the carpet didn’t look all that pretty and one
of the trio was unwell next morning and missed a day’s fishing. Access to a house in Otematata meant annual trips to that area became regular events on the club’s calendar. Later the base changed to Twizel. Increased costs and the introduction of quotas spelt the end of trips to the Marlborough Sounds so Moeraki and Oamaru became new destinations for sea fishing. In the years since those places have been affected by fishing pressures and limit bags. With the decline in salmon numbers and fewer sea-run trout club members who have always been prepared to try new fishing spots have, with considerable success, turned their skills to back country rivers and lakes. Broadening its horizons has seen the club venture further afield to places like Ikamatua, Kokatahi, Waitaki, Naseby and Wanaka. Club members have even fished for flounders at Lake Ellesmere. Currently the club has 30 members including three life members. Wives and partners are involved and interesting programmes are a feature at regular monthly meetings which have included visits to local attractions, trying new sports or hearing speakers from groups like Fish and Game. Over 50 years the fishing spots and the angling may have changed but the original objectives of the Grey Ghost Fishing Club have not and the fellowship, camaraderie and telling of tales – all true – is as strong as ever.

Ashburton Guardian
celebrates 140 years of service He likes Adjectives, but Verbs are Doing Words T
here are not many newspaper subscribers who read every full stop, comma and quotaon marks. Ashburton has one and he’s been checking the punctuaon for nearly 60 years. But Russell Ansss reads more than the occasional semi-colon. He’s absorbed every word of every issue since he became a subscriber in 1963. His habit of devouring newspapers stretched back long before then. Russell recalls his mother reading the Guardian aloud at the dinner table. Russell was only 12 and the habit became a fix, almost an obsession, by the me he opened for business. His interest has been smulated by his strong identy as a proud Mid Canterbury resident. “I’m local, involved in what’s around me and need to know what’s happening,” he says. As an East Street bookseller, Russell regarded the Guardian as Ashburton’s newspaper. “When in business I adversed in it to sell my merchandise and I needed to know what my competors were adversing.” It’s a healthy newspaper that carries the community’s news, a cross-secon of opinion and is indispensable for retailers to adverse their latest products. For most of his retail life, the Guardian was the only local media and it provided Russell with the best results. The newspaper aended book launches, interviewed and photographed outstanding authors and publicised news items generated by Russell and his business. Russell must be one of the first to read the Guardian. He gets up at 4am, picks the newspaper up from the door and reads it before returning to bed. He reads it again during the day. Russell may be rered from business, but he hasn’t rered from life. During the me he replied to Guardian quesons, he’d chaired three trusts and two commiees, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and taken a friend to Rotary. He says he can’t do without the Guardian. It “keeps me informed of the happen-
ings and events in the town and beyond”. Russell believes he’ll be around for a few years yet and, while sll acve, his preference is strongly for the wrien word above radio and TV. Russell has evaluated the Guardian through seven decades – from front page adversing to broadsheet and now compact. He believes the newspaper’s new wardrobe is not for the sake of change, but more to keep pace with life and remain compeve with other newspapers. “Each change has come as no surprise and, at present, it’s probably the most interesng it’s ever been,” he says. In idenfying staff, he says Sue Newman is “amazing” and editor, Ma Markham, puts his “heart, brain and soul into his editorials”. While the Guardian has been referred to as the glue that keeps the community together, Russell calls it “the district’s memory box”. He’s lost count of the mes he’s sought informaon of past events from the Guardian and been able to find the answers. Russell modestly refers to Mid Canterbury as the best district in the whole wide world and the Guardian is “the district’s best daily paper”. That means the paper ranks somewhere above the New York Times and the Sydney Morning Herald. “I strongly believe Ashburton is the best town in which to live and I always look forward to geng home to read the Guardians I’ve missed,” he says. And the commas, full stops, speech marks, colons and, woe bede, any split infinives.

Help Us Solve a 138-year-old Mystery I
f Ashburton Library listed its five most popular books for 1900, it’s likely they would have included The War Of The Worlds by H.G. Wells. It was printed in hardback in 1898 and distributed around the globe. The War of the Worlds would’ve been a scary topic around the me Robert Bell purchased a financial interest in The Ashburton Guardian in 1900. It told the story of how Marans, resembling spiders on steroids, invaded Great Britain. It’s likely there’d be menon in the Guardian’s pages. The updated two-part BBC series, which ended recently, impressed viewers about the genius of Wells who wrote the classic novel 120 years ago. What isn’t known is a rare science ficon book entled The Great Romance, wrien by The Inhabitant in 1881. Even more amazing is that The Inhabitant was an unknown Ashburton man, who remains a mystery today. We do know that this incredible book about space travel was published by the Ashburton Guardian two years aer the newspaper was established. It’s so rare and valuable that only two copies exist today, one at the University of Canterbury and the other at the Alexander Turnbull Library. It tells the story of John Hope, who awakens in 2143 from a sleep that’s lasted 193 years. He’s a scienst who emerges into a world where people have advanced telepathy, leading to a new moral order. Hope has developed new power sources enabling him to create flight and explore space. Together with Alfred and Edith Weir and another scienst, Charles Moxton, he travels in a spacecra, called Star Climber, to Venus. When H.G. Wells’ invaders came from Mars, John Hope flew in the other direcon. What makes The Great Romance stand out like none other is the descripon of challenges he meets on his way to Venus. He faces the absence of gravity, muscle fague and meteor damage. The spacecra needs cooling systems and it lands in the ocean, similar to the way US capsules splashed back on earth. The Great Romance was probably the first science ficon book wrien in New Zealand and one of the first pioneers of the genre in the world. That it was published by the Ashburton Guardian was a proud moment in the newspaper’s impressive history. Nearly 140 years later, the Guardian would love to find out the author. If any subscribers have informaon about the writer, the newspaper would love to hear from you so the full story can be told. There is one slight clue. The following year, in 1882, the Christchurch Star suggested the author could be Mr Henry Honor, “a gentleman resident in Ashburton” but nothing was confirmed. As it celebrates an important milestone, this is one story the Guardian would love to crack. It will tell you first.

Heading for the big time NZ Racing Desk A pair of bargain buys at the New Zealand Bloodstock May Sale in 2014 could lead to the biggest day in racing for Ashburton thoroughbred trainers Sarah and Matthew Smith. The husband and wife team headed north to Karaka five years ago to acquire some future racing stock and came home with Diorissimo and Splendior, who they purchased for $1300 and $300 respectively. “I had marked Splendior in the book, I liked that family and I liked her,” Sarah Smith said. “We hadn’t marked Diorissimo because being a supplementary entry she wasn’t in the catalogue. We were just sitting in the outside ring and I saw her walk past and I thought she meant business. “She was never big, but just the way she walked caught my eye.” Both mares will start at Riccarton today, with Diorissimo being the headline act, lining up in the $50,000 Spring Classic. The couple are excited ahead of this weekend with Diorissimo vying to add a first stakes victory to the trainers’ tally. “It would be absolutely amazing, but we will just see what happens,” Smith said. Smith hails from a harness racing and showjumping background, but said her interest in thoroughbred racing was piqued by her involvement with the breed in the show ring. “I started riding as a kid,” she said. “I was out competing at four in the show ring. Mum and dad had standardbreds, so there has always been horses around. “I got up to Grand Prix at national level and all our ponies were part thoroughbred. I got a couple off the track when I finished university and did some showjumping. “My mother got given a thoroughbred that I pottered around with and it rolled on from there. We got a few hand-me-downs from people.” Smith then decided to try her hand with breeding, however, her first foray ended in tragic

In brief Synlait buys Dairyworks Synlait has announced the conditional purchase of Dairyworks for $112 million, subject to Overseas Investment Office approval. The company also bought cheese manufacturer Talbot Forest recently. Synlait CEO Leon Clement said Dairyworks was a great strategic fit and an important step in growing the presence in the Everyday Dairy category. “Dairyworks is a nimble and innovative company. It will fit well with Synlait and provides us with an opportunity to keep optimising our value chain while giving access into Australia where Dairyworks presence is growing.” Dairyworks will operate as a standalone business under the Synlait umbrella, with its CEO, Tim Carter.

That is where the Dior comes from. They have all got Dior in their names in honour of her.” While Smith was always destined for a life with horses, she said Matthew was less inclined until she became involved in racing and he eventually joined her in a training partnership in the 2015/16 season. “He hadn’t had a lot to do with the horses, he grew up in town,” she said. “We met at high school and as I got into racing he got more interested, he wasn’t too interested in the showjumpers.” Smith said they get great satisfaction out of doing all the work with the horses themselves. “We break them in and Matt shoes them,” Smith said. “I do all the track work riding, so I get to know them pretty well, which is good.” The Smiths are excited about the prospects of both of their mares ahead of the weekend. Diorissimo heads into the Spring Classic off the back of two runner-up performances in the New Zealand Cup Trial Handicap (1800m) and North Canterbury Cup (2000m).
“It was a really good run in the North Canterbury Cup last start,” Smith said. “She did a bit of extra work out wide on the turn. “It wasn’t her ideal track conditions (Dead6) either. She goes on a heavy and a hard surface, but she doesn’t seem to like the sticky surface, so I am hoping it dries out a little bit. “She is a really honest mare. She always puts in 100 per cent. With her draw (barrier three) on Saturday, she will hopefully get an easier run.” Smith has been happy with the six-year-old and is hoping to gain some black-type with her mare who has been installed as a $4.60 favourite by TAB bookmakers. “I would love to see her in the top three and get some blacktype,” Smith said. “We will just see what happens, it is a really nice field. “Her work has been good. We are aiming for the New Zealand Cup, so she has just been building up to that. “We would like to think she would get the 3200m. She did the 2500m reasonably well and she settles well. We’ll then look to possibly do a bit of travelling up north, there are some nice races up there.” The Smiths will also line-up

Splendior today in another race on the programme and the sixyear-old mare is also heading into her race off the back of a nice runner-up performance over 1600m at Timaru last start. “She has come back a lot better this season,” Smith said. “We turned her out for quite a big break and she is progressing very well. Her work has been really good. “A wide draw (barrier 11) for her on Saturday is not ideal because she gets out of the gate pretty quick, so she might end up parked. But she just keeps trucking, she is another really honest mare. “I would like to get her over a bit more distance in the near future.” Smith, a real estate agent, is currently enjoying a sabbatical from her job and is enjoying dedicating more of her time to her three-strong racing team and educating some younger stock. “I am having a wee break just to focus on the horses. We have quite a few young ones here now and with Matt’s business he has been very busy. “Our younger horses are just doing education work and we have also got a couple of foals this year, they are lovely types, so it’s very exciting.”
Emergency services responded to a report of a crash about 4.50pm on Thursday. A truck crashed into a fence post at the intersection of Isleworth and Dobsons roads in the Lowcliffe area. The driver sustained moderate injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance.

Warnings ahead of long weekend Ahead of the three-day Labour weekend, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reminding travellers of a useful tool that shows predicted traffic flows at particular times, based on previous years’ travel patterns. Travellers this long weekend are being advised to check www.nzta. govt.nz/holidayjourneys before hitting the roads to ensure they are aware of any potential delays they may meet on their journey. “Holiday weekends are always busy across the South Island and with good a weather forecast, congestion and delays are inevitable at peak times,” Transport Agency Journey Manager Tresca Forrester said. “But if everyone leaves plenty of time for their trip, is patient and aims to enjoy the journey, then people can arrive at their destinations safely and passengers will have enjoyed it too.” Because predicted peak times can change based on incidents (sometimes caused by crashes), weather and driver behaviour, it is suggested that you check www. nzta.govt.nz/traffic-and-travel-information before you leave for accurate information about current road and traffic conditions. The Transport Agency’s holiday journeys site shows the busiest areas through the South Island over
Motorists are being reminded that with any long weekend usually comes with heavy and often congested traffic, especially in areas like Ashburton. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN long-weekend periods, inlcuding State Highyway 1 through Kaikoura and North Canterbury, south of Christchurch through Ashburton and Timaru, SH7 through the Lewis Pass, SH70 near Geraldine, SH73 Arthur’s Pass route between Canterbury and the West Coast SH6, between Nelson and Blenheim, and also through Murchison SH6 into and out of Queenstown and Wanaka. Some driving tips to remember are to drive to the conditions, whether it’s the weather, the time
of day or amount of traffic. Take regular breaks to stay alert and ensure fatigue doesn’t affect your driving. Share the driving if you can. Keep a safe following distance from vehicles in front so you can stop safely. Be patient – overtaking is unlikely to make a significant difference to your journey time due to the amount of traffic expected over the weekend. Allow plenty of time, remember you are on holiday and avoid the need to rush. Check your car is
safe, warranted, wipers/lights are working and you have a spare tyre inflated before you head off. Road safety charity Brake is reminding drivers to help keep themselves and others safe on the roads by following a few simple but essential road safety messages. With the Rugby World Cup semi-finals also taking place this weekend, Brake is calling on drivers to pledge not to drink any amount of alcohol if they’re driving, because even small amounts affect reaction times and co-ordi-
nation. In 2017, 130 people were killed and 446 seriously injured in crashes where alcohol and/or drugs was a contributing factor. As fans head to friends’ houses, or out to bars to watch the game, the charity is advising everyone to plan before heading out, and if they’re drinking, to make sure they have safe, alternative travel arrangements. This could involve using public transport or taxis, having a designated sober driver, or walking if there is a safe route. The charity is also urging drivers to give the road their full attention when they’re at the wheel, and to ensure that everyone in their vehicle is wearing a seat belt or appropriate child restraint on every journey. “We want everyone to enjoy the long weekend, and the rugby, and to get to their destination safely, so we’re reminding drivers that even small amounts of alcohol affect your driving, and urge you to pledge not to drink any amount of alcohol if you have to drive,” Brake’s NZ director Caroline Perry said. “If you’re drinking, arrange an alternative, safe way to travel. Crashes have devastating consequences and we don’t want to see someone’s long weekend to end in tragedy.”

Final price list for prohibited firearms published Police have published a final amended price list for prohibited firearms and parts eligible for compensation under the buyback scheme. There are now a total of 49 prohibited parts on the price list due to the addition of AR lower receivers for the first time. “Police want to make it clear to firearms owners that AR-style modular lower receivers are now a prohibited part no matter what upper receiver – for example a centre-fire or rimfire – they are attached to,” Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement said. “If you have in your possession an AR lower receiver you will need to hand it in. “There is less than two months to go to hand in all prohibited firearms and parts if you want to receive compensation. “Don’t wait, it’s not worth risking prosecution.” An additional 39 firearms have been included into the buy-back price list, bringing the total to 454 firearms now eligible for compensation.
The latest buy-back price list incorporates a number of firearms submitted by the public to police for consideration for the price list. These firearms were assessed by the KPMG reference group, and those added to the list meet the criteria for compensation under the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Regulations 2019. This is the fifth and final iteration of the price list since the announcement of the buy-back and amnesty on June 20, 2019. Some firearms owners may also be eligible for compensation under unique prohibited items criteria if they have a prohibited rare or unique firearm or part. Alternatively, if the firearm has been modified in such a way that its value is at least 30 per cent greater than the standard model listed on the buy-back price list. Information on the criteria for unique prohibited items and how to apply is available on the police website or by calling 0800 311 311.

Getting your life back on track after a stint in prison or on a non-custodial sentence isn’t easy. It takes determination, a willingness to grab opportunities and most of all it takes people who believe in you. Reporter Sue Newman talks to two Corrections staff who help people walk the bridge from prison and into the workforce.
W
hen you’re fresh out of prison and you’re desperate to get your life back on track, you need good people fighting in your corner. Two of those people are Garron Starr and Amanda Wallis. They work with Corrections Employment Services and it’s their job to find jobs for prisoners. For the pair, however, what they do is far more than just a job, they’re passionate about getting their clients into work and on track for a second crack at life. Amanda’s officially a recruitment consultant and her boss Garron’s official title is principal advisor employment development. They’re grand words for jobs that work at the grass-roots level to change lives. The men and women Garron and Amanda support into employment all have offending in their histories, they’ve been through the court system. Some may be completing long spells behind bars, others may be on community sentences or orders or parole. One thing most have in common is that they’re out of work and it’s Garron and Amanda’s challenge to find them jobs. They find jobs for the people that most
do not want to employ. Their jobseekers often have low skill levels, some may have recently acquired a qualification, others may have skills that have not been used for years. Changing lives, however, isn’t always easy when on one hand your clients are offenders and, on the other, you need to identify employers who are prepared to take them on. It’s a challenge, but when you get it right, it’s incredibly rewarding, Amanda said. Nothing happens overnight. Preparation for life beyond prison or a non-custodial sentence begins long before freedom day. A large slice of a prison’s population will start a sentence with few skills, but there are a raft of opportunities they can take advantage of to change that, she said, NCEA pass levels can be achieved and apprenticeships worked towards. There’s a range of study options and practical work opportunities for the willing, for those wanting to make a fresh start postsentence. And many take advantage of those opportunities, leaving prison or completing community sentences work ready.
Construction, service industries, manufacturing, farming and horticulture training in those fields is available in most prisons. There are work release programmes that take prisoners outside the wire fence each day and there are work opportunities inside. One of those opportunities came when earthquake-damaged homes moved into the grounds of Rolleston Prison. That meant meaningful work and those who wanted to learn new skills and gain qualifications for employment in construction-related industries on release. Amanda, as a frontline work broker spends hours with prisoners, encouraging them, supporting them and helping them believe in second chances. Second chances, however, rely on finding employers and they’re not always easy to find, even in areas with low unemployment, she said. “The hardest part is the perception of employers. It’s about finding employers willing to give us a chance. The employers we find are really good, but our people sometimes end up with jobs that are bottom of the barrel.” They’re not always happy with step-
ping down the ladder, but work is work and there will always be new opportunities. The key is finding that first job. If there’s a lag between a person leaving prison work ready and an employer coming on board, it can be pretty demoralising after they’ve put in months working towards the goal of employment, Amanda said. A work-ready prisoner will have a CV prepared, will understand what’s needed in a new job and they’ll have learned a range of skills that will equip them for their new independence. They also know that they need to be honest and upfront about their offending, she said. It’s not uncommon for a person completing a sentence to have lost their driver’s licence as part of their offending and that often poses an additional barrier to employment. This is a big challenge for corrections and we are doing a great deal of work to get people’s licences renewed and to get their licensing journey under way through our services in the community before people leave prison, Amanda said.

“It becomes difficult for things like shift work or labouring jobs where they need to travel to get to work in areas where there isn’t good public transport.” For various reasons, many of the people we work with have not achieved in the school system, so included in the work-ready projects are addressing gaps in a person’s numeracy and literacy skills. “And motivation is definitely the key here. We try to hook into something they’re really interested in rather than learning in a classroom situation. Our big push is to get people into jobs and to get them to stay in those jobs.” Adjusting to life outside prison was never easy, but having a job helped immensely, Amanda said. “They need to get into a routine, learn the ropes. Their lives are not over, they’re only starting. It’s about helping them to make a new life, a new start.” Behind every prisoner there was a story and a reason for their offending. Some of those stories were sad, some were bad. Most people we have been working with have been on a slow slide through circumstances that ultimately ended up
in prison time, Amanda said. “We talk to them, listen to their story and that helps when we’re placing them with an employer. We’re absolutely non-judgemental and I don’t think you can get someone a job unless you invest your time in them. You get quite involved in their lives, you learn so much about them. They are all people with their own stories.” For some prisoners, working with a recruitment consultant may be the first time they’ve had someone go into bat for them, she said. “It’s so good for someone with a criminal record having someone standing beside them. We’ll take them to an interview if they want and we’ll be there for them.” The team’s goal, Garron said, was to ensure people who’d completed a custodial or non-custodial sentence were able to assimilate back into the community and not reoffend. “Our big driver is motivating people. 95 per cent of these people want to work and they want to change,” he said. The employment team also works with prisoners to help them build up confi-
dence and transferable skills to their new workplace. The service is a wrap-around one. Employers and employees are not introduced and left to their own devices. “Once a person is in a job we don’t just leave them to get on with it. We work alongside employer and employee for as long as we need to. We would never put our name on someone who wasn’t work ready. We want employers to come back to us,” he said. For some it was hard to accept that their type of offending may dictate where they can work and that the job they were able to secure might be a job that is light years away from a previous career, Garron said. Often the jobs available were on the bottom rung and that might be hard for someone such as a white collar criminal or a semi-professional to accept, but every job was a start on a new life, he said. Yes, there are occasions when a job placement goes sour. It’s disappointing, but when that happens you have to go back and take a second look at all the success stories, Garron said. “One success outweighs 10 failures
because of the great impact on that life.” For corrections, changing employer attitudes was key and the best way to do that was for one employer who had a success story talking to another, he said. Corrections could also provide some financial support if there was an employment hurdle such as equipment, clothing, training or a drug test that was needed. The service is free, corrections is not an employment agency. Amanda and Garron work in prisons across the South Island. Their goal is for every prisoner to be in relevant study, work or training on release. They know that’s an aspirational goal as there will always be a core of people who are not motivated to change their lives. They’ll talk to any employer anywhere. They want to break down barriers, to help employers to understand that people who’ve been to prison can still become valuable and skilled employees.

Given the right temptation anyone can stumble. Ask Josh (not his real name). He went from student to offender and on the way kissed goodbye to a promising career. He talks to reporter Sue Newman about the corrections work broker team who presented him with a second chance and an opportunity to rebuild his life.
Slipping into crime J
osh was a young man looking at a bright future. He was partway through a degree, when by his own admission his life started running off the rails. Bit by bit his connection with life as a student started to slide, and bit by bit he was slipping into life as a heavy drug user. The outcome was easy to see – drugs, antisocial behaviour, breaking the law and a date with the court system. “Life started to become a big problem. I couldn’t complete my degree, I was off the rails, involved in legal drama and getting to rock bottom,” he said. Josh was lucky he was caught before his offending escalated, before he was staring at a custodial sentence. Instead, he faced six months on community detention, followed by nine months on probation. And he was lucky. That put him into a system that showed him a way out, a way back up if he was prepared to listen, prepared to learn and, most of all, prepared to get clean. It was tough. He was on curfew. Night hours meant he stayed home. His movements were electronically monitored. His life was lived in a very small space, his opportunity to interact with the world was limited. But what was not limited, was the opportunity to get his old life, his good life back. Take the opportunities, do the hard yards and, while it might be a while coming, if he kept his nose clean, he would eventually be a man who was going somewhere good. When corrections employment services came knocking Josh was
sceptical. He had some work experience, a partially-completed degree and not much more. And he had a non-custodial sentence hanging over his head. Job prospects, at best, looked grim, he said. Amanda Wallis, work broker, became his lifeline to life after community detention. “She was fantastic, very engaging. I had to pass a drug test and she was a real support for me when I was low.” There’s no point in pretending it’s easy to turn your life around. It’s not, Josh said. He goes to counselling, attends anger management courses, he’s off drugs and he reckons he’s getting back to where he needs to be. Yes, he’s working late shift in a job he might not have chosen in his previous life, but he’s grateful to be getting a second shot. “It’s work, it’s a job and it’s giving me a sense of value and purpose, a reason to get up every day. My life is getting back on track.” You don’t notice when your life is on a slow, downward spiral, you need to hit the bottom with a pretty hard thud to make you see how far you’ve fallen,” Josh said. “But I can now see how I can get to the place I need to be. I’m on an upwards trajectory. I’m building towards my goals to where I want to be, putting in place the building blocks. I can
now see there is redemption and it’s not always easy to see that.” With community detention behind him, he’s working through his time on probation, checking in on schedule with his probation officer, doing everything he can to make sure there’s no chance of a black mark during those nine months. “It’s pretty simple stuff really, being communicative, getting to appointments on time, doing what’s expected.” Josh knows he’s had a lucky escape. His offending was relatively low level. Yes, he’s lost his immediate chance at a career, yes he will have given 15 months of his life to corrections, but the opportunities are there for any offender to get back on track – if they want to, he said. People like Amanda, who believe in you, who
encourage you and who help you identify opportunities are there for every offender, he said. Ultimately the choice has to be the individual’s, but it’s a system that’s about second chances – if you want them, Josh said.

CORRECTIONS EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
S T C A F THE About 250 people each year in Corrections Release to Work programme travel outside prison each day to a regular job. Corrections manages around 59,000 new sentences and orders each year. Over 40 per cent of those are community work sentences which provide 2 million hours of unpaid labour to communities each year. At any one time around 4000 people in corrections care are subject to electronic monitoring conditions on home detention, community detention, residential rstricted and extended supervision or GPS Release to Work. Around 15,000 people are released from prison each year and thousands more complete community sentences. Research shows that people who are working a regular job after they’ve been in prison or served a community sentence are less likely to re-offend. In the 13 months to October 31, in Canterbury, corrections placed 328 people in jobs, helped 199 with career planning, and 571 were prepared for job seeking. A total of 1773 people were given employment assistance. Up to 70 per cent of people in corrections care have difficulty reading and writing and essential literacy and numeracy skills are part of their training programme. People who employ staff through corrections are provided with on-going support and the person they employ comes with full disclosure so their employer will not have to guess about their conviction. Corrections employs over 350 instructors to help train people in prison to achieve meaningful job skills.

OUR VIEW
Accept a job and learn to fly I
f you’ve ever been in the market for a new job, and let’s face it – at some point in time we all probably have – you’ll know all about the little kicker that you’re after when you are going about your search. It might be the promise of a company phone, or even better a company vehicle. Or perhaps it’s one of those rare jobs that actually lists what remuneration package is attached to the role. They are the things our eyes tend to scan toward first. We want to know, most importantly, what’s in it for us. What stuff is important and going to change our lives and what the potential employer is going to offer me to make me want to apply. The options are almost end-
less. Life insurance, days off on your birthday, shares in the company or even five weeks’ leave a year instead of four. But a new one hit the market this year and, whether or not it’s a slice of marketing genius or not won’t be known until local firm, Arrowsmith Law, find what they’re looking for. They’ve got all the usual bells and whistles attached to their current listing. It’s attractive
enough to anyone in that particular field who might be on the look-out for potential employment. But they’ve gone even a step further and thrown in a sweetener which would make anyone stop and have a second look what they’re offering. There’s an option there, if you want to take it up, to learn how to fly a plane. At the business’ expense. It’s not just a pie-in-the-sky (literally) moment either. There is no one-flight wonder with this little kicker. It’s the full hog. They are prepared to put the successful applicant through their entire pilot’s licence, an expense of about $17,000 over the course of two years.
Not a bad wee addition, is it? In a market where it can often be a battle to get job specific, young and qualified people to come and live in our district at times, anything that might entice someone to make the move is a clever idea. It might not work but it also could and that wee addition to the job listing might be the difference in the business getting the outcome they want and need to make things tick for them in the future. It’s certainly something a little bit different and the move has gained Arrowsmith Law a boost in coverage with interest from national news agencies, so for them it’s probably already a success, irrelevant of the final
outcome. It’s just nice to see employers and businesses thinking outside the square to lure people to the Ashburton District. It’s quite clearly evident that the more young professionals we have rolling around in our community the better served we will be. And any step towards making that happen is a good one. Today it’s flying lessons, but who knows what this one decision might lead to next. The next advert you read might just list all those little gems you’re looking for when hunting for a job and then something completely out of the square that makes you sit up, take notice and get that application in.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Saturday, October 26, the 299th day of 2019. There are 66 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On October 26, 2001, President George W. Bush signed the USA Patriot Act, giving authorities unprecedented ability to search, seize, detain or eavesdrop in their pursuit of possible terrorists. On this date: In 1825, the Erie Canal opened in upstate New York, connecting Lake Erie and the Hudson River. In 1881, the Gunfight at the OK Corral took place in Tombstone, Arizona, as Wyatt Earp, his two brothers and Doc Holliday confronted Ike Clanton’s gang. Three members of Clanton’s gang were killed; Earp’s brothers and Holliday were wounded. In 1942, the New Zealand Women Jurors Act allowed women to sit on juries. The Act provided for women aged between 25 and 60 to have their names placed on the jury list on the same basis as men – if they so desired. In 1944, the World War Two Battle of Leyte Gulf ended in a major Allied victory over Japanese forces, whose naval capabilities were badly crippled. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed a measure raising the minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour. In 1965, the Beatles received MBE medals as Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. In 1979, South Korean President Park Chung-hee was shot to death by the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency, Kim Jae-kyu. In 1980, Israeli President Yitzhak Navon became the first Israeli head of state to visit Egypt. Is Ashburton’s day of shame imminent?
T
his has been a big week or two around the country in local body politics and locally our new Ashburton District mayor and councillors have been sworn in to their respective roles for the next three years. Congratulations to all those who comprise our new leadership and a special congratulations to councillor Liz McMillan who has accepted the role of deputy mayor under new mayor Neil Brown. The table feels fresh yet a bit familiar, a nice blend of a few new heads along with some more established faces. But is Ashburton’s day of shame imminent? The day I’m alluding to is the day when, if current policy is enacted, the building that has until very recent years housed our information centre, is jacked up and carted away. Because if that does happen without any review by the new team, then I and I suspect many others, will indeed consider it a great shame. The recent elections will be read differently by various people but would it not be reasonable to conclude that some of the big shocks were as a result of elected representatives not listening to the weight of public opinion? People power won the day with the water feature debate and a bad former council deci-
Peter Mac
PETE’S PERSPECTIVE
sion was revoked. Could it happen again in the nick of time with the information centre? Will this new council reconsider what many still consider to be a flawed decision? It has always been my position that the best and only place for a local information centre is exactly where it is. Aside from superficial maintenance neglect in recent times, the structure looks great and to this eye looks really fabulous where it is. The old council decided it could dispense with an information centre, yet after public pressure, decided to make a space for one in the new civic building still some time away from eventuating. Problem is, it is doomed to fail. No one will enter a civic administration centre to access that information. This sort of operation needs to be boutique, stand-alone, in your face, where the heart of the town is and part of the buzz.
And that’s where the existing, now closed centre came into its own. We were told that no one uses information centres any more. It’s all online. They are old hat. That was now several years ago. I did some research on this and ran out of steam. There are so many of them. The number of manned information centres around New Zealand ranging from major centres to some really small places number north of 80. Heaps of them up and down the country. Places large and small. There’s seemingly more than 100 if you count other set-ups doing primarily the same thing but in different guises. Clearly they are not dropping like flies, the doors aren’t being boarded up shut. The thirst for quality people-manned information dispensing and promotional centres is still as great as ever. They are a hub, a meeting point of visiting strangers. We appear to be the anomaly. Ashburton. Bucking the trend. Against the tide. Why? Oamaru, Opotiki, Ohakune and Otarohanga are all still in the i-SITE business. How about Ranfurly, Raglan and Reefton. Kaiapoi, Invercargill and Westport all have them. But Ashburton, no! A bit out
of step don’t you think? As a main street experience it could be observed that Ashburton struggles to maximise its vibe with no commerce on the western side of East Street in the main CBD block. What the information centre gave us was a buzz, a vibe, activity and life on the other side of the road. When the doors were open, the lights were on, the buses pulled up and people were too-ing and fro-ing, the town had its ying and yang in place. Since that building has closed, it’s a different feel altogether. The CBD, even in its refreshed state, is going to need all the help it can get to keep our town’s pulse alive. If the new team would consider the importance of this and restore something that was never broken, then maybe that’d be a very encouraging start for a fresh team. At least take the time to reconsider it. I wish them all the best for a dynamic three years. The first weeks around the table will certainly be very interesting. Relationships are shaped by social justice
I
n many places, the church reaches out to people in need with agencies such as Presbyterian Support and Methodist Mission, as well as Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul. This mission imperative is often referred to as social justice. What does social justice mean for the church? There is no definition of social justice in the dictionary. Interestingly, it tells you what social class is, what a social climber is, social credit, social development, differentiation, disease, environment, process, science, service, studies, welfare, work. But ... social justice happens to be missing from the list! I looked up the words separately then and found that “social” means, “pertaining to, devoted to or characterised by, friendly companionship or

relations”. And “justice” means “the quality of being just, being motivated by truth – the moral principle which determines just conduct”. Together, it means living in a relationship with other people that is shaped by honesty and morality. For Christians, that means living in such a way that our relationships with other people, are shaped by our understanding of God’s justice. So, how do we determine exactly what God’s justice is? The gospel writers Matthew, Mark and Luke repeat over and over that what was more important
to Jesus than sheer wealth or poverty, was whether people cared for each other. Rich or poor, the question was, did their hearts go out to others? Mother Teresa said that “the biggest disease in the world today is the feeling of being unwanted. And the greatest evil in the world today is the lack of love – the terrible indifference towards one’s neighbour which is so widespread”. It’s not that wealth is inherently wrong; rather the danger is, a preoccupation with wealth and indifference to the needs, and the welfare of others. Not because possessions are incompatible with the love of God, but because people can become totally self-absorbed, caring only for our own comfort. Too often, people’s worth is measured by their job, their sta-
tus, their wealth. Too often our possessions are seen as what gives our lives meaning. We can be so driven to possess things, however, that we end up being owned by them. When that happens, we can find ourselves becoming indifferent to the needs of others. People in Jesus’ day would have considered wealth as being God’s blessing, but Jesus was calling them to a new way of seeing. So, who do we see sitting waiting for us to notice them, maybe waiting for a word of recognition, companionship, love, forgiveness, or justice? Social justice is shorthand for the community where true riches are understood as integrity, love, faith, compassion. Who is missing out then? Are there young people or immi-

grants in this town who need help? Are there lonely folk who feel rejected? Further afield, are there people, especially women and children in countries such as Syria, waiting for us to see them and respond? Social justice might not be part of the dictionary’s vocabulary, but let’s pray that Jesus can help us to see things in perhaps new ways so that it never ceases to be part not only of our vocabulary but of our lives. ■■TOURISM
Making the most of a tourism lull By Grant Bradley
Webster said that with current low interest rates, “money is just flooding in’’ for tourism ventures, from Kiwisaver funds and Australian private equity investors. He too is worried that red tape surrounding building is delaying projects. Hotels are being finished two years too late. There have been well-publicised problems with local government funding for infrastructure in the South Island, but also around the Waitomo things are “absolutely broken’’ and central government needs to front up, Webster said. Local authorities need to be careful about imposing their own taxes such as the proposed bed tax in Queenstown. In light of the slowdown, Tourism NZ is concentrating on core markets – Australia, China and the United States. Tourism NZ expects the slowdown trend to continue for the rest of the year before picking up in the second half of 2020. Other markets such as Korea would open up, with Air NZ flying to Seoul and Korean Airlines increasing capacity.

in the industry. A survey about to be released shows that more than 40 per cent of tourism businesses questioned believe business is going to get better in the coming year, in contrast to the gloomy tone of other confidence surveys. One area that two or three years ago threatened to staunch future growth was the lack of hotel capacity, but there has been a surge in hotel building in Auckland and Queenstown. And there are signs of a slight pick-up across the board, especially in the domestic market. Last week Statistics NZ figures
showed the first increase in international guest nights for nine months – up 0.5 per cent. Total guest nights were up 3.7 per cent at 2.62 million in August from a year earlier, with domestic guest nights up 5.6 per cent at 1.66 million. The new tax on visitors from most countries aside from Australia and the Pacific Islands, will raise about $80 million. A review of how the estimated $1.7b in GST paid by international visitors could be spent on tourism has been requested by some. The chief executive of Tourism Holdings Ltd, Grant Webster, says
the tourist industry should learn the lesson of the global financial crisis (GFC). “Back in the GFC, one of the biggest issues for the industry was a dramatic pull back on expenditure. We’ve had the growth. This is a pause to invest in infrastructure for the next phase.’’ Tourism surged around the 2011 Rugby World Cup, then continued its strong run, putting pressure on infrastructure and tourism facilities. But tourism businesses need to watch their operating costs during what is clearly a more difficult time.

The Sudima Christchurch hotel lobby. The results were shown in Sudima’s exceptionally strong staff retention rates, Roberts said. Sudima Hotels receives a prize valued at over $20,000, including $10,000 international air travel. The NZME people’s choice award for the second year in a row went to Forgotten World Adventures. The business attracts travellers to a community well off the beaten track with its innovative use of a decommissioned rail track in the Taumarunui region. It now offers rail cart journeys, jet boat and helicopter tours, and has opened a motel to encourage visitors to stay longer in the area. Tourism’s most prestigious individual honour, the Horwath HTL Sir Jack Newman Award, went to Glenys Coughlan, who has enjoyed a stellar career in tourism. Her roles have included high

The Marsh Tourism Industry Champion Award went to Fergus Brown who over 40 years, has displayed an “unwavering passion’’ and enthusiasm for the tourism industry. Currently chief executive of Holiday Parks New Zealand, his career has included roles across government, his own tourism business, and various sector and regional groups. Roberts said this year’s awards were extremely competitive, a reflection of a thriving industry that is providing economic, environmental and social benefits to New Zealand.

Hotel group Sudima has been judged the top tourism business in the country. It won the Air New Zealand Supreme Tourism Award for excelling as an employer and in environmental performance. Sudima Hotels were also named as the winners of the Tourism Talent Employer of Choice Award and the Enviro-Mark Solutions Environmental Award. The award judges said Sudima is getting better all the time, with a broad range of superb initiatives that are making a difference to the business, the environment and the wider community. Starting as a family business, Sudima has expanded rapidly, with four properties in Auckland, Rotorua and Christchurch, including the recently opened Sudima Christchurch City. Two more will open in Auckland City and Kaikoura in 2020. Sudima properties are designed to be accessible to all, regardless of physical ability. It was first hotel group in New Zealand to be awarded a carboNZero certification. Its environmental efforts extend to its suppliers, who are selected for their commitment to sustainability. Tourism Industry Aotearoa chief executive Chris Roberts said creating a tremendous staff culture has been integral to Sudima’s success. The judges described Sudima chief executive Sudesh Jhunjhnuwala as a visionary in his people approach which is best summed up as “look after your people and they look after your business”.

Tourism businesses are making the most of a breather in the rate of visitor growth. The sector experienced 30 per cent growth in the five years to 2018, reaching more than 3.8 million visitors as air links expanded and the global appetite for travel grew rapidly. For international visitors, New Zealand was a hot destination. But that’s changed. The number of new airlines coming here has levelled off and economies have soured in some of those visitors’ home countries. Tourism New Zealand says holidaymaker growth has stalled – running exactly flat at 0.0 per cent in the year to July – while the number of people visiting friends and family, and for business, is growing in the low single digits. That’s well shy of overall annual growth of up to 12 per cent when the market was running hot. Does that mean this country’s biggest earner of foreign exchange is in the doldrums? Far from it. Confidence is still running high

LLOYD off to
LONDON By Erin Tasker
erin.t@theguardian.co.nz
A few weeks ago, Ashburton netballer Kate Lloyd’s immediate playing future was a bit uncertain. Without a contract for the 2020 ANZ Premiership, Lloyd was preparing to throw herself head-first into her studies and find a job, but then she received a call that changed everything. The London Pulse wanted Lloyd to join them for the United Kingdom’s 2020 Superleague season, and after giving it a bit of thought and talking it over with her family, the 22-year-old decided it was an opportunity she couldn’t turn down. So Lloyd, a 190cm tall defender who last year played for the Mainland Tactix, will fly to the UK after Christmas ready to join the London Pulse for what she hopes will
be a season of growth. She’s a mixture of excitement and nerves at the moment, but knows she’s made the right decision. London came calling at just the right time. Having missed out on an ANZ Premiership playing contract, and having just turned down a training partner contract with the Tactix, Lloyd had been weighing up her options. “When I didn’t get a contract this year I just wanted to have a summer where I could recharge my batteries and get a bit of money behind me,” Lloyd said. That plan’s now gone out the window. She won’t even get a full summer, leaving just as the Kiwi summer is getting into full swing and heading to the depths of an English winter, but she couldn’t be happier.
Ashburton netballer Kate Lloyd is off to the UK in December to join the London Pulse. PHOTO ERIN TASKER 251019-ET-0006
Like a lot of Kiwis her age, she saw herself going on an OE at some stage. Now, she can do it knowing there’s a job waiting for her, doing exactly what she loves to do, and it will take her all around England, Scotland and Wales. Playing for the Pulse is a paid gig and she’ll be able to earn a bit of extra money on the side by doing some coaching. It’s money she hopes to put toward a bit of travel around Europe at the end of the season. “I’ve always wanted to go and travel and this has probably given me the kick up the bum to do it,” Lloyd said. What will follow her season with the Pulse, Lloyd doesn’t
know. But, even after she finishes the last of this year’s exams over the next week or two, she’ll still have five papers left to complete in her sport and recreation degree at Lincoln University. Study will be put on hold while she’s in the UK though, allowing her to focus fully on the job at hand – helping the Pulse make it to the top in the UK Superleague. It’s a competition made up of 10 teams from across England, Wales and Scotland, which began in 2005, and the defending champions heading into the 2020 season are the Manchester Thunder. The London Pulse club was only formed in 2017 and this year’s squad features a Kiwi in Lloyd, a Jamaican in Adean Thomas, and a
South African-born shooter who has joined the Pulse after two seasons with the Surrey Storm – Sigi Burger. Lloyd will be joined in the defensive end by England Futures star Halimat Adio, young Roses star Zara Everitt and ex-Saracens Mavericks player Lindsay Keable. It’s a team full of tall timber, so Lloyd knows she’ll have to work to get starts, but she’s always up for a challenge. The London Pulse will play their first pre-season game on January 12, and start their season proper away to the Strathclyde Sirens on February 22, with their first home game – at Copper Box Arena – being against the Celtic Dragons in round three.

■■RUGBY WORLD CUP
English myth to be dispelled NZME With just one selection the All Blacks have recast themselves as the big bad wolf to England’s Little Red Riding Hood. A dynamic that was being painted as the swerve and verve of the All Blacks against the crushing confrontation of England is having to be re-drawn now that Scott Barrett has been selected at blindside. It’s just one change but it’s significant because it’s the All Blacks signalling they are going to target England where they have so often been portrayed as strong, but where the All Blacks suspect they are now weak. England, the masters of physical, set-piece rugby, have a lineout that is begging to be attacked. They have a scrum that may not be as solid as everyone assumes and they might not in actual fact have all the hardware they need to work effectively in the collision zones. They only have two genuine lineout options, which is the price they have to pay for picking twin openside flankers and the thundering Billy Vunipola at No 8 who could, should he jump, possibly get high enough to have an envelope slipped under his feet. So the All Blacks are trying to take the sanctity of the touchline away from England. They want the lineout to be a place they fear not a place to which they escape. But there’s more yet to the Barrett introduction. There’s deeper connotations. The All Blacks aren’t throwing away their all-out attack game as a result of picking Barrett, but they are making it clear they want to be yet more direct and confrontational than they were against Ireland. The All Blacks pack is strangely never rated in the art of beating up other teams. The talk is always of their attack, of their skillsets, of their amazing capacity to conjure some ball playing magic. It’s England and South Africa who tend to hold the narrative
Scott Barrett’s selection signals the All Blacks will target the English at the lineout. about being bruisers, scrummagers and hard nut warriors and a bit dense and lacking out wide. But this is a myth All Blacks coach Steve Hansen is eager to expose. The ABs ran Ireland ragged, but they beat them up first. The damage looked like it was done by the speed and skill of the backs, of the flashing feet of Sevu Reece and George Bridge, but it was the relentless thunderous ball carrying of Kieran Read, Joe Moody and Sam Whitelock that really did the damage. Ireland had the life drained out of them in the middle of the field by the confrontational work of the All Blacks’ forwards. That’s why they didn’t have the legs to chase down Reece, Bridge and Beauden Barrett when the All Blacks did opt to go wide.
Scott Barrett brings another bruising, ball carrier to the party. He’s another big man with hard shoulders and soft hands: a player who can slip those telling late passes and a player who can drop his shoulder and clamber over the top of a tackler. Ireland’s vaunted defence never turned up to the quarter-final, but England’s will and it’s on a different level. It will require a more thorough job to break it down. Against Australia they didn’t give an inch. The Wallabies had the ball for an age, they ran this way and that, danced here and ducked there but they couldn’t find even a crack to prise open and it was frustration that did them in the end. Frustration that no holes would appear. Frustration that despite
the endless onslaught, England didn’t give any soft entry points – there were no dumb penalties. No rash decisions. But the Wallabies maybe ran everywhere but the one place they should have: hard and straight up the middle of the field. The All Blacks don’t look likely to make the same mistake and that’s where they are going to attack first, knowing that England, for all their resources and clever coaches, haven’t actually worked out how to defy science. Not even England can cover every inch of the field when eight of their forwards can barely move as a result of having to relentlessly tackle. The selection of Barrett is potentially a tactical masterstroke by Hansen, but its real value may
PHOTO NZME
be the psychological impact. By sticking him in the No 6 jersey, the incredible thing is the All Blacks have a more foreboding physical presence than England do now. England are going to maybe feel vulnerable in the places they don’t typically feel vulnerable. This will be new psychological territory for England to face an All Blacks team whose bigger threat may lie with numbers one to eight as opposed to nine to 15. All those years of everyone bagging England for sticking the ball up their jumper and playing with the imagination of a fork and it’s the All Blacks who are coming into their semi-final clash with the bigger pack and the more obvious intent and ability to dominate the set-piece.
■■COMMENT
No early mistakes are key to All Black success By Michaela Blyde NZME
I
f the All Blacks get a good start against England, I’m confident they will make the Rugby World Cup final. The English will provide tougher opposition than Ireland mustered in the quarter-final – they are a more clinical team and very physical, especially in the forwards. Against Australia, England pounced on every mistake. That’s how they got their early tries. If the All Blacks make early mistakes, whether it be dropping the ball or giving away penalties, this England side will make the
most of it in Saturday night’s semi-final. But if the All Blacks get fast forward momentum in the first five minutes, and first points, they will be a hard team to stop. If they allow England to get a good start, and the English get the sort of lead they did at Twickenham last year, it will be tricky for the All Blacks to catch up. Hang on to the ball. That’s the key for the All Blacks. We all know how fit the All Blacks are, and what Beauden Barrett can do after 15 phases of play. He is someone who never seems to get tired – he still
sprints at his fastest and can spot any hole in the defence after a long period of play. He is very difficult to stop over the first five or 10 metres. And what I really noticed in the Ireland game is how strongly he carries the ball into contact, compared to Richie Mo’unga for instance. Barrett engages two or three defenders which creates space on the outside, or helps halfbacks Aaron Smith or TJ Perenara find the space. I’m a little bit surprised that Scott Barrett will start at blindside flanker. To me, Sam Cane is the type of loose forward you
start, rather than bring off the bench. I understand he had a niggly wrist injury from the Ireland game so maybe that is a factor. But it doesn’t matter whether you start or come into the game – any injury can still be aggravated. But in formulating his side for this game, Steve Hansen had to start Ardie Savea as one of the loose forwards. He has been absolutely massive, with so much energy on attack and defence. I’m sure starting in the slightly unfamiliar position won’t be a problem for Scott Barrett. The Barretts seem to have this incredible gene – no matter
where you put them, at whatever time of the game, they perform to their best. Owen Farrell is a vital component for England, including in the goal kicking battle with Mo’unga. Farrell landed eight out of eight against Australia. And Manu Tuilagi is another danger man in the centres. He carried the ball really hard against Australia. Which team can hold on to the ball the longest? That, I think, will be the key. – Michaela Blyde was World Rugby Women’s Sevens Player of the Year 2017 and 2018.

The senior grade was won by Bill Allnutt, who won all three of his games, while Gail Benseman, Bev Blair and Brian Goodwin won one game each. PHOTO ERIN TASKER 221019-ET-0005

Breakers confirm Loe suffered skull fracture
January return for McGregor
NZME
AP
The NZ Breakers are likely to be without stoic centre Rob Loe for some time, after the 28-yearold sustained a skull fracture in the side’s big win over Illawarra on Thursday. Loe left the court clutching his head just four minutes into the game after a seemingly innocuous collision with Illawarra guard LaMelo Ball. He was unable to return to the game and was transported to hospital. Initial reports of a fractured skull were confirmed by the Breakers yesterday, however the club won’t know anything more on just how serious the injury is until Loe undergoes more tests in hospital over the weekend. “We don’t know the extent of what’s happened yet. We’ve got to find that out,” Breakers forward Thomas Abercrombie said. “If it is something serious and he’s out for a long time it will be a huge blow. He had a great off-season with the Tall Blacks and brought that form into this team and I think we’ve seen the
Conor McGregor will return to mixed martial arts in January with a UFC fight in Las Vegas. The Irish fighter said yesterday he will return “fully focused” on January 18 at the T-Mobile Arena. “That is my comeback fight. It is 12 weeks this Saturday. I am in prime physical condition. I have agreed the date with the company,” McGregor said, adding that he knows his opponent’s name but won’t reveal it. “If I was to give you people the name, which I would love to do, I know the UFC would flip it because they are a crafty company.” The 31-year-old McGregor hasn’t fought since losing by submission to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018. He was banned for six months and fined $50,000 for his part in a post-fight brawl. McGregor said he is targeting two more fights, including a rematch with Nurmagomedov in Moscow. He also aimed a string of insults at the Russian fighter. McGregor said he would then like to fight the winner of the November 3 bout between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal.
Rob Loe shoots over Steven Adams in a preseason game. different ways he can impact a team with his smarts. “He’ll be a massive loss if that’s the case, we’ve just got to find out a little bit more information first.” Loe had made an important impact with the Breakers in the few matches they’ve played in their young campaign, and looked like he would be among the focal points of their game going forward. However, they’ll now have to plan to be without him for at
least today’s visit to Melbourne United and likely much longer. Loe’s absence didn’t hamper the Breakers against Illawarra, as the side’s shooters were locked in from the outset. Shooting at 55 per cent from the floor and 45 per cent from beyond the three point arc, the Breakers gave the 8000-plus in attendance at Spark Arena plenty to cheer about. Thursday’s win saw the Breakers improve their record to 1-2.
President Donald Trump says he is planning to attend the World Series on Sunday if it goes to a fifth game. The president, a New York Yankees fan, confirmed his plans while presenting the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Roger Penske, a businessman and founder of one of the world’s most successful motorsports teams. The Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros are playing, with the fifth game scheduled for Sunday in Washington. The Nationals lead the series 2-0 and could conceivably win it before Sunday’s game. - AP
Classic rescheduled Barcelona’s rescheduled “clásico” match against Real Madrid looks set to go ahead on December 18. The Spanish league said that it is appealing to sports authorities and ordinary courts to rule on whether the clubs and Spanish federation followed correct procedures to reschedule the match, which was originally set to be played this Saturday but was moved because Catalan separatists are planning another large rally in Barcelona. The league is objecting to playing the game on a weekday – December 18 is a Wednesday – because of lower TV ratings but said it will not ask for the game to be put on hold while a decision is made. - AP
Fan inks RWC result A “crazy” All Blacks fan is so confident that New Zealand is going to win the 2019 Rugby World Cup, that he has already got a tattoo branding the team this year’s winner. Masterton man Shaun Pollard, who is a massive All Blacks and Hurricanes fan, shared a photo of a recent Webb Ellis Cup tattoo he got along with the years the All Blacks have won – including 2019, which hasn’t been awarded yet. The 37-year-old married father of two said he got the entire tattoo on Tuesday and had no doubt that the All Blacks will win this year’s Rugby World Cup. - NZME
Ski star rising Teenager Alice Robinson is a world ski star in the making. After an amazing 2018/19 season during which she won a World Cup final silver medal in Andorra to go with her junior gold medal, the giant slalom ace has set her sights high. The 17-year-old Queenstown schoolgirl’s quest to join the skiing elite kicks off again in Austria this weekend, when the 2019/20 World Cup circuit begins. Robinson, New Zealand’s youngest winter Olympian, is tipped to be a major medal prospect at the Beijing Games in three years’ time. - NZME

Tech look to continue winning ways By Erin Tasker
erin.t@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury’s two teams tackling the Canterbury Country Cricket senior grade this season are set to square off at the Ashburton Domain today. Allenton will host Tech in round three of the competition’s south section today, in what will be a real test for both sides. Tech headed into the competition as one of Mid Canterbury’s strongest sides from recent seasons, while Allenton headed in as the unknown quantity. A team made up entirely of players from India, most of the new Allenton team had never played competition cricket in New Zealand and their season didn’t get off to the best start, well beaten in a crossover match with north section side Swannanoa. In round two though, they picked up a good five-wicket win thanks largely to a knock of 70 off just 47 balls by Manpreet Singh. He hit seven sixes to get his side out of trouble and see them home, after they were 5/28 after 12 overs, chasing Weedons’ total of 128. So Tech will have to keep an eye on him as they look to make it three-fromthree to start their debut Canterbury Country season. Tech beat Weedons in round one, and then beat Peninsula-Harbour in round two with just 10 players, and will certainly come out strong today with local bragging rights on offer.
They’ve got a team more than capable of doing some damage with bat and ball, too. Tech are the only one of Mid Canterbury’s four senior teams from last season who chose to play in the Canterbury Country competition, after that was selected as the path to go down this year when the old Mid Canterbury Cricket senior grade got to the point of no return, with only three clubs likely to have been able to field teams this season. As a result, Tech have picked up a few players from Coldstream and Lauriston. Neither club had enough players to commit to entering the country competition, but they did have some players keen to give it a go, and Tech welcomed them with open arms. The core of last year’s Tech side remained, but they’ve been bolstered by the addition of the likes of Lauriston’s Liam O’Connor, Bevan Richan and Nick Gilbert, and Coldstream’s Jay Houston and Richard Print. It’s made for a team with a lot of bowling firepower, while some of the Tech old boys like Des Kruger, Jason Morrison and Will McKee are likely to give their bowlers some big totals to defend as the season goes on. And they’ll no doubt be hoping today is one of those days. Today’s 40-over local derby will be played on the Allenton Cricket Club’s wicket at the Ashburton Domain, off Walnut Avenue, starting at 1pm.
Monday, October 28 Ashburton Racecourse First race 12.27pm Free race book and admission. Come and see this years leading NZ Cup contenders when they line up in the Ashburton MSA Liquor Centre Flying Stakes.

Hoping to turn frustration to elation By Matt Markham
petitive when he’s on the ball and not making the task that much harder by making mistakes. Drawn barrier one on Monday, the key – in May’s eyes – will be getting through that first few hundred metres safely and hoping there’s not too many lead changes which give him the opportunity to get a quiet run along on the markers behind a hot speed. Then, the hope is, that the staying prowess and speed that AG’s White Socks possesses might actually be seen in this cup buildup. It’s already been a tough week for May and the Hope stable with champion trotter Monbet back in the paddock after suffering yet another injury. The comeback trotter had been trialling up brilliantly as he looked to recapture his best form and was pointed toward Monday’s Ashburton Trotters’ Flying Mile but after a solid trial on Tuesday was withdrawn. “The trouble has always been with his back legs, but this time it’s a front one. That’d be about the end for him I think.” Greg Hope said on Thursday that no decision would be made on the future of the former Horse of the Year until he’s had time out in the paddock for the injury to heal.

The frustration in the voice of Ricky May tells the story that the champion horseman knows he should be getting more from his New Zealand Trotting Cup aspirant, AG’s White Socks. Brilliant at points in his career, the Greg and Nina Hope trained pacer’s career has also been littered with disappointing efforts, not helped by a mannerism which has crept into his repertoire which leaves him chasing, as opposed to being the one who is chased. “He used to be really solid from the stand start,” May said. “But he’s got into this habit of going away but then going really rough and it’s costing him. “He was doing it this time last year too.” After showing plenty of promise with a good second fresh up behind Classie Brigade, it’s been hard luck stories and disappointing efforts ever since and May, who knows a thing or two about a New Zealand Trotting Cup preparation, can’t take any confidence into this weekend’s assignment, the Ashburton Flying Stakes on Monday. “You’d like to think that it’s a good draw for him and that he

Our sports coverage is one of the cornerstones of the business. Our readers are passionate players, watchers and arm-chair critics who love nothing more than reading a good yarn about local sporting stars or teams. Sport takes place at any time on any given day, so you’ll be flexible with your working hours and willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to provide the sports coverage that the paper requires. You’ll also get the opportunity to swing one of our cameras around from time to time too. Weekend work in this role is a given, but that does mean that you’ll get time off during the week to enjoy everything our district has to offer. That could mean that in Winter you are on the slopes within an hour of raising your head from the pillow or in summer out on the lake after just a 10-minute drive. If you think you could be the sporting star we are looking for, then we would love to hear from you. Send us an application letter along with your CV, telling us about your passion for sport and what you could bring to the Guardian team. Please send your application, along with CV to Matt Markham by e-mail: matt.m@theguardian.co.nz or post to Box 77, Ashburton 7740. Applications close, November 1.

Simon Shuker’s Code Cracker
Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): That thing you were expecting from a loved one may be causing more trouble than it’s worth. Erasing the expectation will be like a magic spell lifting the gloom. Suddenly, the best sort of surprises are in store. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): It used to happen every night, but we are so far from the tribe and fire now that any dance seems like a special occasion. Tonight should be so much fun that you’ll vow to make this happen more often. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You may have given too much of the wrong thing up front because you didn’t know better. You’ll now make adjustments that have to do with what you’re willing to give to get what you want, or to stay in the game. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It’s a strange feeling to learn that you misunderstood something and held the wrong belief for a long time, but such is life. Many never reassess what they know for accuracy’s sake. In this way, you’re ahead. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Once you tested the boundaries without realising what you were doing, and now you’re quite deliberate about it. It comforts you to know the limits, though that won’t keep you from pushing past them. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The spiritual and scientific will coexist quite nicely in your mental processes today. Whatever you’re not able to make logical sense of will possess some poetic or emotional quality that pulls your attention. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Memories are dynamic ideas that get rewritten each time they are revisited. Today, you’ll think of how you’d like to remember something as it’s actually occurring. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Love is all the power you need in the situation. You don’t have to believe this for it to work. Ask what part of the situation you might flow more love to, and then do it and watch things start to shift. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): It would take a long time to clear all paths of rocks, but with good shoes, the terrain is not a problem. It’s much easier to protect your vulnerabilities than to change the whole world. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Those who don’t have a lot of truth at their disposal will cling to a few beliefs with tenacious certainty. With more truth comes more intelligence; with more intelligence comes flexibility of thought. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Because you’re so modest, sometimes you have to be talked into accepting and appreciating yourself. How about loving yourself so you can love others more?
