Skidmarks show the path travelled by a vehicle fleeing police through Pages Road on Christmas Eve.
Crash after failing to stop By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
All a 27-year-old man got for Christmas was being arrested after crashing his car after failing to stop for police on Christmas Eve. A spokesperson said police observed a car speeding along Cass Street and used blue and red flashing lights to signal for it to stop. The vehicle failed to stop and sped off, but a pursuit was not initiated by police. The vehicle was located a short while later having crashed into a fence on Pag-
es Road, with the 27-year-old driver being taken in to custody without incident. He has been charged with various driving offences and is due to appear in court. A Pages Road resident the Guardian spoke to said they heard the car’s tyres screeching around the corner before the noise of it crashing, with police following closely behind. The road was closed for some time on Christmas Eve with only residents allowed to come and go as police carried out their inquiries at the scene. Skid marks could be seen on the footpath

after the car mounted the curb, while bricks were scattered in a driveway where the car struck a mailbox before being stopped by a small concrete fence. While a pursuit was not initiated in this incident, the number of pursuits being initiated in the Ashburton District has grown since 2014. Figures released to the Ashburton Guardian through an Official Information Act request show that police based out of the Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia police stations have engaged in 57 pursuits since the start of 2014.
Of those 57 pursuits, 38 were abandoned. Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said at the time the figures were released that it was disappointing to see those numbers increasing. “What we want every driver or rider to understand is that we can always talk things over at the roadside. Fleeing from police is never worth it,” he said.

In October four new faces won themselves seats around the Ashburton District Council meeting table. Reporter Sue Newman talks to those new councillors about why they stood for council and what they hope to achieve this term.
Council service a way to give back P
utting himself forward as a candidate in a local body election had been on John Falloon’s mind for years. Life and work got in the way, but finally, after giving 30 years of his working life to a variety of boards and out-of-town institutes, Falloon decided at this year’s October local body elections it was a case of now or never. “Until now I’ve never really had time to put something back into my local community. I should have stood last time but it just wasn’t right. Now the time is right, I think I’ve still got two terms in me – there’s no point in standing for just one,” he said. When he looked at the composition of the last council Falloon said he felt there were some skill sets missing around the meeting table and believed that if elected he could use his background and experience to fill those. He’s a Waimate boy and on leaving school moved to the Ashburton District to work on a farm for a couple of years before heading to Lincoln University. He completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Commerce and worked as a valuer, but decided that wasn’t the job for him. A return to study saw him graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Canterbury, followed by a move back to Ashburton and a job with accountant Bruce Leighton. He stayed the distance, bought the business and says he and wife Shirley love the place they’ve called home for many years and where they’ve raised their children Anna and Andrew. “Ashburton has been kind to Shirley and myself and it’s time to give something back.” Adding his role as councillor

to his accountancy workload doesn’t faze Falloon. He won’t admit to being a workaholic, but says work is his happy place. “We bought a bach at Rangitata two years ago. Shirley and Andrew thought I needed something to get me away from work,” he said. It was a good move. He’s down there every second weekend and celebrates the lack of wi-fi and cellphone coverage. “It’s a good community – brilliant – and it’s just 30 minutes from home. You can have your flash houses in Akaroa, they’re
two hours away.” Buying the bach meant Falloon had plenty of projects and he’s spent most of the past two years with a paintbrush in his hands. He’s not complaining, he loves his weekend environment. In terms of his role as a councillor, Falloon said he has no hidden agenda, no real goals. “Basically what I want to see is the best use made of ratepayers’ money and we must make sure we look at what’s good, not just for the town, but for the whole district.” It might be early in the new
council’s term, but Falloon says the team around the table looks to have a good balance of skills. “No-one seems to have any secret agenda, we’re all working together and Neil is turning out to be a bloody good mayor.” He’s happy to be one of a team of nine, rather than 12, the previous council size. “Anything more than nine or 10, and particularly if the people aren’t all working together, you can get divisions and it takes a lot longer to reach a conclusion.” His son Andrew might be a member of parliament, working
on a much bigger stage, but the two keep well away from one another’s patch, he said. “If we start talking politics it gets a bit heated and we just have to move on. “He doesn’t influence me and I don’t influence him.” When it comes to future debates, Falloon said he won’t be a councillor who sits back and goes with the majority. If he feels strongly, or that a decision is wrong, he’s committed to having his say and voting for what he sees as the right and best outcome.

Praying for family in Samoa
Ashburton Boxing Day sales busy

The Samoan Congregational Christian Church of Ashburton have spent the month of December praying for their fellow country members affected by the measles outbreak back home. Special days of prayer were also held on Sunday the 15th and 22nd, where the congregation called out to all Christians in New Zealand and around the world to join in prayer for those that have been caught up in the country’s measles epidemic. Accompanying the special prayers the local Samoan Congregational Christian Church Choir sang hymns to honour their loved ones back home. Church member Manu and some of her fellow parishioners left for Samoa on December 24. Their time is Samoa will be spent working with families in need and offering spiritual guidance for those who have lost loved one and in particular children.

■■POLICE
Crash after failing to stop for police From P1 “Once a driver chooses to flee, what could have been resolved at the roadside by way of education, alternative action, or an enforcement action, is now considered a serious criminal offence. “Not only does it mean you’ve just broken the law and could
now face a criminal charge, you are also risking your life, any passengers’ lives, and the lives of people on the road around you. Just pull over and stop.” Jenkins said everyone should stop when signalled by police. “Police do not want what should be a roadside conversa-
tion to turn into a fleeing driver event in any circumstance. These events are some of the most complex, fast moving and serious situations that our staff face on the frontline,” he said. “It is for that reason that our staff take the decision whether or not to pursue a fleeing driver very
seriously. Police have to balance protecting the public from dangerous driving behaviour and the potential for the offending driver to take even greater risks. Every situation is different and our staff have to make split-second decisions in demanding circumstances.”
Ashburton retailers were kept busy on Boxing Day with a steady stream of shoppers looking to hunt out a bargain. For Paper Plus Ashburton owner Terry McNab it was a case of head down, bum up dealing with a steady flow of people through the store. “Looking at the figures it has been one of the better ones,” he said. “There seem to be a lot of people about, I’ve been head down, bum up busy so haven’t had a chance to look down the street but it seems to have been busy.” McNab said while Boxing Day is often spoken about as being a big day for retailers, for ones like himself you end up having to take profit out of your margin thanks to having to put big discounts on products. “There are certainly people about but you give a bit away in the margin with discounts just to try and get them in the door,” he said. For Robilliards Showcase Jewellers owner Mark Douglas it was also a busy day. “The people through have been steady enough, it has definitely been worth having the doors open,” he said. “I haven’t been down to the main street but we have had a steady stream of people through the Arcade and people have been saying there have been lots of cars around on the main road.” Douglas said while the Boxing Day sales are a big day for the national retailers in town, it was important for “mum and dad” retailers to have their doors open to make the most of people being out shopping. “For a couple of years now there have been a group of us (in the Arcade) that have been opening on Boxing Day and it’s been worth it,” he said.

■■WHITE ISLAND ERUPTION
More than $400,000 raised for victims NZME More than $400,000 has been raised for victims of the White Island volcanic eruption that claimed the lives of 19 people and left 25 people with horrific burns. Donations ranging from a few dollars to several hundred dollars are coming in at a steady rate on
crowdfunding websites for the victims of the December 9 eruption that spewed scalding steam, rocks and ash into the air. One family donated $220 to Jake Millbank, saying they gave up having Christmas presents to help the tour guide who turned 19 on the day of the eruption. “Merry Christmas Jake, our love
and thoughts are with you and your family. This Christmas we’ve chosen to donate rather than give presents. We hope every day you have some improvements. Wishing you all the best for your recovery,” said Steph on the Givealittle page set up for the teenager. So far, $125,347 has been raised for Millbank, who has burns to 80
per cent of his body and is now reportedly breathing on his own. A Givealittle page for a second tour guide, Kelsey Waghorn, has raised $98,562. She has been a tour guide on White Island for five years and suffered burns to 45 per cent of her body. A GoFundMe page set up for American newly-weds Lauren
Urey and her husband Matthew has raised $56,302 towards a goal of $100,000. They suffered severe burns and in a post their families said “thank you” to New Zealand. More than 30 people ended up being treated in hospitals around New Zealand, many of them fighting for their lives.
In brief Gifts resurface on TradeMe Looking for a Boxing Day bargain but can’t be bothered leaving the house? Have a look at TradeMe. Unwanted Christmas gifts have quickly appeared on the resale site as ungrateful recipients try to fob off poorly chosen presents. By 10am yesterday there were already some 70 presents listed in the section dedicated to unwanted presents. They include an iPhone XS still in the box for $1600, a DeWalt drill and driver combo starting at $499, and Beats headphones for $375. Going for a $1 reserve, presents include a “gorgeous” red lacy bra where the giver guessed the size wrong (12D) and a white Zara sweatshirt. In 2018, there were 20,000 unwanted presents listed and 100,000 searches registered on Boxing Day as opportunistic sellers and bargain hunters jumped on-site. - NZME
Told to take off tee-shirt A 10-year-old from Wellington was reportedly made to take off his tee-shirt and turn it inside out before boarding a plane in South Africa because it depicted a snake. Stevie Lucas was with his family on December 17 at the security gate at OR Thambo Airport when staff asked him to take off the offending tee-shirt and put on another. The offending tee was black, with a green snake picture draped over the shoulder. The family was reportedly told nobody was allowed toys or rubber snakes - NZME on the flight.
Brighter weather on the way A dull Christmas, damp Boxing Day and unsettled last few days of the year look set to give way to a drier and warmer New Year’s. The latest forecast for our welcome into 2020 looked great for most, according to a WeatherWatch bulletin. “New Year’s Eve is fast approaching and the latest forecast at this stage is looking excellent for many places ... at this stage 95 per cent of the country looks dry with the only wet weather likely affecting Fiordland after dark on New Year’s Eve. “Some patchy rain and showers may also arrive in Southland later in the day, but this isn’t yet locked in for sure.” New Year’s Eve temperatures also looked mild in many regions, WeatherWatch said. - NZME
Goodbye Santa This year is the last Christmas for the big man who has towered over Aucklanders each festive season for the best part of 60 years. In that time, he was the world’s largest fibreglass Santa when built in 1960, changed hands for $1, lost his wink and moving finger, and crowned the world’s creepiest Christmas ornament. But after being saved from retirement in 2014, the central city’s business association Heart of the City announced last month this would be his last festive season atop the Farmers building in Queen Street. ”We know Santa is well-loved by many Aucklanders,” Heart of the City chief executive Viv Beck said, “but sadly, for a combination of reasons, it feels the time is right to retire this model.” - NZME

OUR VIEW
Just stop for the cops I
t was the night before Christmas, and all was calm. A quiet evening on Pages Road, just like any other. Then out of nowhere a car came screeching around a corner, taking out a mailbox before smashing its way in to a concrete fence, coming to a stop. The car had been signalled to stop by police, and while a pursuit was never officially initiated, that person clearly had no intent to stop for police, an issue that unfortunately appears to be coming more and more common. In Christchurch there seems to be a new story every morning about a police pursuit through the city, unfortunately some-
times ending in tragedy. We are not immune to pursuits here in the Ashburton District, police statistics show that, but fortunately they do not often end in crashes. Figures released to the Ashburton Guardian through an Official Information Act request earlier this year show that police based out of the Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia police stations have
engaged in 57 pursuits since the start of 2014. Of those 57 pursuits, 38 were abandoned. The decision to abandon a pursuit lays in the hands of the officer driving or the communication centre supervisor. Unfortunately we have seen these pursuits end in tragedy all too often, including a crash recently in Christchurch that led to the death of a hospital worker and a young man getting sent to prison. I’ve only ever been signalled to stop by police twice while on the roads, and pulled over as soon as I could. I’m not sure what the thought process is behind taking the
opposite action and putting the foot down, whether it is a fight or flight reaction, or if it falls in line with Kiwis’ over-inflated sense of driving excellence and they feel they can escape from the police. As Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said, police do not want what should be a roadside conversation to turn into a fleeing driver event in any circumstance. Police don’t join up to chuck the sirens on and chase criminals around town, they do it to keep communities safer. Unfortunately the incident on Christmas Eve is an ugly reminder of how police pursuits can go wrong. We have already had a shocking death toll on local roads this
year, with 10 people losing their lives, and we don’t need that to be added to before we bring in or start 2020. There is no winner or loser in a police pursuit. Sure you might dodge a ticket for running a stop sign if you manage to speed your way away from a police car, but it is more than likely that the police will catch up with you anyway, and you are running the risk or wrapping your car around a tree or power pole and killing yourself, or worse, hitting and killing an innocent passerby. That is a hell of a price to pay for avoiding a conversation at the side of a road with a police officer.

wenty nineteen is a year that Holden is going to want to forget. Sales stumbled to their worst levels, its reasonably new CEO Dave Buttner left the building, and the Holden Commodore’s fate was finally confirmed. But there’s at least one nice silhouette on the horizon for the car-maker to look forward to, being the right-hook Chevrolet Corvette C8. And, the first of the breed has landed in Australia. Holden confirmed its Corvette Christmas on social media this week, showing the first Corvette C8 to land in Australia at its headquarters in Victoria. Given the timing, it’s unlikely that the new arrival is a right-hook variant set to go on sale. Instead, it’s most likely a test vehicle for local evaluation. Holden alluded to its plans for local tuning specific to Australian roads and conditions on social media (“You’ll find the Corvette to be tuned and tested for our roads and conditions” it said, in a response on Facebook), which will most likely concern the way the C8 rides on local roads. While American Corvette enthusiasts are picking up their new C8s as we speak, Australasian buyers are set to wait until 2021 for a local arrival. Local pricing is yet to be confirmed, but that didn’t stop us from taking a stab at guessing back in August. The Corvette’s 2021 arrival won’t just be momentous because of the fact its

wo young engineers from New Zealand have arrived in England to begin an internship established in honour of McLaren’s Kiwi founder, Bruce McLaren. University of Auckland students Elizabeth Grant and Harvey Merton are both following in the footsteps of Bruce McLaren who arrived in England in 1958 on a scholarship before going on to establish his racing team five years later. Bruce’s vision was always to build supercars. McLaren Automotive was established just under a decade ago to fulfil that vision and which is where Elizabeth and Harvey, who both have a passion for high performance engineering and cars, will spend the next two months. The company has produced some of the world’s most iconic supercars, most recently unveiling the Elva roadster which celebrates the renowned Bruce McLaren-designed M1A and McLaren-Elvas of the 1960s. Produced as ‘customer’ versions of the innovative and exciting Group 7 McLaren race cars, the McLaren-Elva sportscars embodied many of the pioneering design and engineering principles that are still integral to the McLaren road cars the company hand-builds today. Both Harvey and Elizabeth will be based at the iconic McLaren Technology and Production Centres in Woking, where they will have stints with designers, development engineers, the powertrain team as well as areas such as aftersales to gain a rounded understanding of the 2700-strong team.

More clean vehicles? AP
F
iat Chrysler and Peugeot agreed recently to merge into a single company that will become the world’s fourth-largest automaker, a giant that could bring consumers a wider variety of cleaner vehicles at a faster pace, including more powered by electricity. The boards of the two companies signed the deal to achieve what neither was good at alone: conquering the challenges of stricter emission rules and navigating the transition to battery-powered and autonomous vehicles. The new company, which doesn’t yet have a name, will be led by Peugeot’s cost-cutting CEO Carlos Tavares. Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley will stay on, though it was unclear in what capacity and for how long. For consumers, the agreement will give Fiat Chrysler access to “multi-energy platforms” already developed by Peugeot, including electric vehicles, Manley said. “That obviously increases choice and improves overall fleet performance from a CO2 perspective,” he said. “In any competitive environment, you win because you offer your customers great value.”

and trucks. But Brinley said Fiat Chrysler could use the Peugeot underpinnings to build more small and mid-size SUVs at a faster pace for sale in the US. Meanwhile, Peugeot would get Fiat Chrysler’s expertise in pick-up trucks and commercial vehicles and could perhaps sell some of the popular Jeep brand vehicles in Europe and elsewhere. Tavares said both companies’ brands have a strong following, especially in their home countries, that could be used as an advantage. “When there is passion and emotion, there is room to work on the marketing communications,” he said. The merger will not be the last in a capital-intensive industry that faces challenges of new technologies, Brinley said. Although she expects more combinations, she said competitors such as Ford Motor Company have been able to get economies of scale and share technology costs through partnerships that are short of a full-blown combination. Ford, for instance, is partnering with Volkswagen, while the much smaller Mazda of Japan is joining with Toyota. “I think that it’s not unrealistic that we will see another merger or acquisition,” Brinley said. “But strategic alliances can be just as
effective or more. I think we’ll see both happening.” The deal, which was first unveiled in October, will create a company with revenues of nearly 170 billion euros (nearly $190 billion) that produces 8.7 million cars a year — just behind Volkswagen, the Renault-Nissan alliance and Toyota. The new company will be legally based in the Netherlands and traded in Paris, Milan and New York. It will start with a strong base in Europe, where Peugeot is the second-largest car maker. Fiat makes most of its profits in North America and has a strong presence in Latin America. It will be looking to strengthen its position in China, where both companies lag. “That is part of the opportunities,’’ Tavares said. “We are not happy with our performance there. We think we should be doing better in China.’’ Fiat Chrysler has been looking for an industrial partner in recent years. A previous deal with French rival Renault last spring fell apart over French government concerns about the role of Renault’s Japanese partner, Nissan. Both the French government and unions backed the new deal from the beginning, Tavares said.

Golf – the game’s al G
If you’re a golfer, there’s no such thing as a bad day on the golf course. While golf’s main season in New Zealand is winter, warm weather and golf are really the ideal pairing. Summer holidays are an ideal time to get out and try some of the Ashburton District’s superb courses. Reporter Sue Newman takes a look at the district’s three 18-hole courses and picks the best and the worst holes on each.
olf is a game that you never master. It poses ongoing challenges for new golfers and old hands. It’s a tough master, it’s addictive and once you start playing you pretty soon learn that a top game today will inevitably be followed by a slump game the next. Yes, your game might be stink, you might hit every tree, find every bunker, shank out of bounds, rarely see a fairway and watch every putt slide past the hole, but we golfers are fundamentally an optimistic lot – the next shot, the next hole, the next game will always be better. To survive the game you need to have a fairly strong masochistic streak because you’ll suffer significant pain when things go wrong and you mentally beat yourself up and you’ll need high self-esteem to deal with the days when your game goes to hell. On the flip-side and why golfers keep going back to the course is the acceptance that no matter how grim your round, it will end, the club house will be waiting, there will be food and thirst quenchers will be available. And no matter how bad your round, someone – usually will have a worse story to tell. No matter how many years you’ve been playing, no matter how many courses you’ve played, every course has its store of memories – good and bad. In the Ashburton District we’re fortunate to have three superb 18-hole courses, with the addition of a couple of nine-holers. And every one of those courses has its own challenges, highlights and holes that you approach with the golfer’s two greatest enemies in your bag – fear and self-doubt. The best and the worst ..... of Tinwald Golf Course It’s long, there are creeks, bunkers and trees. Sometimes they’re all available on one hole. And there are deceptively straight and easy holes that leave you wondering what went wrong. It’s a course that will challenge the best and at times reward the novice, but it’s a course you’ll never master. The best: Number 18: The final hole is a par 5 and it’s a challenge, but if you are long and straight it’s relatively easy to play in regulation. Off both the men’s and women’s tee block there’s a fairway hump that your tee shot needs to reach to have a chance of making par. If you’re leftish or centre then you’ll have a clear shot through a dog-leg right to set yourself up for a decent chance of hitting the green in three. But, and there are some big buts, and that’s what makes this hole fun. Stray right off the tee and you’re in a vast wasteland of GUR. Where you’re able to take a drop will determine what happens next but too often there are a couple of trees that will need to be played over or under. There’s trouble to the left off the tee too and trouble for the huge hitters if they’re too long – trees again. The green is guarded by bunkers left and right and the challenge becomes playing an approach shot that will miss both. Once you’re on the green, the ball is basically in the hole. The rewards come in two straight shots and a clear line to the green, the punishment is deviating either way. The worst: Number 13: This par 4 can be a game wrecker, but if you judge your second shot correctly, you’re likely to be marking a par on your card. Men and women are off the same tee, but the design of the hole means there’s no advantage to either. The fairway is straight, with the green off-set to the left. Sounds simple, but there’s a creek running in front of the green, right on bounce line if you’re playing a bigger iron shot into the green and there’s a creek at the back if you
The Methven Golf Course has it all in terms of challenges. overshoot. Add to that a bunker that’s pretty much always in the firing line and hole 13 becomes a mental challenge. Go off line from the tee and you’re in trees to the right and any chance of a second shot to the green is usually not on, go off line to the left and you have trees, a creek, out of bounds and absolutely no line to the green. And the green itself is sloping and depending on pin placement it’s easy to miss the hole and keep rolling and rolling until the green front creek comes back in play. The best and the worst ... Methven Golf Course It’s the district’s most picturesque golf course and that means no matter how badly you’re scoring there’s some compensation with the scenery and the clear mountain air. Methven has it all in terms of challenges, with plenty of holes where landing on level ground is a bonus. On a bad day it’s a tough course as every hole has something designed to catch even a perfect shot, but on a good day it’s a dream. The best: Number 7: It’s not easy to find a “best” hole at Methven, they’re all challenging if you wander off the tee, but number 7 offers a chance to open up and really smack the ball. Yes there’s an out of bounds opportunity to the right and a few clumps of trees to the left, but a halfway decent hit off the tee will take you over the mid fairway gully to the top level. For most women it’s a challenge to make the green in two (that’s why it’s shot hole
1), but two good shots and you should be a short chip away and while a par might be on the wish-list, a one over is pretty decent for your average female golfer. This hole has the bonus of providing a panorama of the foothills for its entire length and that makes it a thing of beauty no matter how well – or badly you’re playing. The worst: Number 13: It’s amazing how often a par three can become a game changer. And at Methven the short number 13 can be just that. You stand on the tee, look at the green only a short distance away, focus on the gaping bunker that sits in front and second-guess your club choice. What might appear a short iron shot in your mind suddenly becomes a shot that will land in the bunker. The only real option is to take a bigger club, play it soft and high and keep your fingers crossed that the ball will land as planned and not roll and roll and roll. The green has run-offs on every side and that means a second shot from tree roots or a longish rough. And then there’s the bunker and a pin placement that’s often very close to the front of the green and the bunker’s edge. Make the green off the tee and you’ll have a par in your bag; land anywhere else and it’s in the lap of the gods. The best and worst ... Ashburton Golf Club Unlike Tinwald and Methven, at Ashburton there are not any really high danger holes. It’s a deceptively easy course,

but once you’re out there playing unless you’re absolutely on your game, towering pine trees, plenty of bunkers and very slick greens are just waiting to blow your card. The best: Number 5: It’s a short par 4 and if you get it right off the tee, you’re in a perfect position for a par. The hole dog-legs to the right but there’s plenty of room left to drop a drive that will ensure an easy shot into a largeish two level green. Yes there are bunkers on the left if you’re a little wayward, but they’re shallow, and don’t pose too much danger. And it sets you up mentally for the 6th that also dog-legs right but is longer – the shape might be the same but the danger risk is much higher. The worst: Number 18: This par four is certainly not an easy hole. it’s one that makes you think about ball placement off the tee and onto the green. With its slight dog-leg left, you’re tempted to drive well right to set up a good line into the green for your second shot, but there are trees, humps and hollows out there if you’re too wide and any chance of making the green in two has gone. Play too far left and you’re in more humps, hollows and bunkers. Even with a good line to the green from centre fairway, actually hitting the sloping green is difficult. It’s big, tiered and slick. Add bunkers to the right into the mix and it’s a challenge, but one that if you get it right, will bring the reward of a par and a glow of success. If not, think of a number. It’s been remodelled in recent years and it is now one of the more attractive holes on the course.
Creeks, bunkers and trees, sometimes all on the one hole, make Tinwald a good challenge.

Kiwis who helped Aussie bowlers get back to best By Niall Anderson NZME
If Australia’s bowlers produce another stellar performance against the Black Caps, two New Zealanders will be partially responsible. Former Black Cap Andre Adams has helped guide the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon in his role as New South Wales bowling coach, while James Pattinson – set to be picked as the fourth member of Australia’s bowling attack – had his test career saved by Kiwi surgeon Grahame Inglis. Pattinson is set to play in his first home test in four years, and holds a superb record against the Black Caps, taking 20 wickets at an average of 17.7. That includes 14 wickets in two tests in 2011 – the only time he’s faced New Zealand in Australia – which included five straight wickets as he reduced the visitors to 28-5 on debut in Brisbane. However, he feared his chances of playing in a Boxing Day test were over just two years ago, when he visited Inglis in a last-ditch attempt to fix his back injury, and save his career. Inglis, who has performed the spinal surgery successfully on the likes of Matt Henry, Shane Bond, Hamish Bennett and Corey Anderson, initially believed Pattinson’s back might have not been fixable. However, along with fellow Kiwi surgeon Rowan Schouten, they managed to allow Pattinson to play top-level test cricket again, inserting metal pins, wire and a graft from his hip bone

Pat Cummins celebrates. into his vertebrae. Pattinson, who spent over a week in hospital after being unable to roll out of bed after the surgery, reflected on his return to the top level ahead of the iconic test in Melbourne. “After being through so much disappointment with my back, [not being able to play in a Boxing Day test] is always in the back of your mind. “I’ve been through a lot of setbacks but the hunger has always been there. Hopefully I can put in a good performance.” Also expecting a good perfor-
mance is Starc, who is back to his devastating best, and credits Adams for his assistance with some technical changes, and getting his mindset in the right place. “I got in a really clear mindset. Just tinkering with a few things and keeping it pretty simple and doing a lot of work with Andre back in NSW to get those really positive feelings and clear mindset. And it has seemed to pay off.” Adams explained to Martin Devlin on Newstalk ZB how he connected with Starc.
“My coaching method is based on the athlete – what do they need, where are they at? You just need to spend enough time with them to figure out how they deal with certain things. “When it came to Starcy, it was just a case of figuring of ‘this is what I do really well’, and then being able to trust that.” Now, with a helping hand from their Kiwi sources, Starc and Pattinson are ready to fire – and the Black Caps will have to be at their best to deny them further success.
■■UFC
Kai Kara-France booked against durable opponent NZME On the biggest stage of his career, Kai Kara-France let the world know his name. Matched up against Brandon Moreno at UFC245 in Las Vegas earlier in the month, the Kiwi UFC flyweight went back and forth against his Mexican counterpart in a fight of the night contender in his first bout on American soil. Going to the judges’ scorecards, Kara-France knew he got the better of the first round, lost the second, and the third round could have gone either way. Then he heard the first judge scored the fight 30-27 in Moreno’s favour, and ultimately went on to lose the bout by unanimous decision – with the two other scorecards reading 29-28 to Moreno. He won’t have to wait long to turn his fortunes around, however, with the UFC’s No. 8 ranked

flyweight set to get straight back into his work. Kara-France will meet Hawaiian Tyson Nam at UFC Fight Night Auckland on February 23, joining City Kickboxing teammates Dan Hooker and Brad Riddell on the card. It’s one of three fights to be added to the card, with a women’s flyweight bout between Rachael Ostovich-Berdon and Shana Dobson and a welterweight clash between Callan Potter and Kenan Song also confirmed. Kara-France said the bout against Nam was the ideal way to bounce back from his hardfought loss in Las Vegas. “The judges were a bit harsh that night – I definitely won round one, for sure, and one gave it to him so right from the start they weren’t going to give it to me,” he said. “It’s just one of those things, when you fight in America you
can’t just leave it to the judges because they’ll screw you over. It’s nice to be fighting in my hometown next where hopefully that doesn’t happen – but I’m not looking to go to the judges for this fight, I want to put it on for my country and do it in dominant fashion. The 26-year-old will get back into his work soon after the festive season, taking time off to spend time with family in the Hawke’s Bay. It’s an important part of the journey, Kara-France said. “It definitely recharges you and puts things in perspective of why you do the sport and who is behind you and in your corner. It’s a nice thing to do while I can; I’ll see my mum and I’ll go visit my friend that passed away, Pat O’Brien, during my last fight camp. I couldn’t go to his funeral so now I’m in the area I’ll pay my respects to him and see my cous-
ins that are good close friends with him as well. It was meant for me to come home just to reset, refuel and start getting ready for Auckland, which has always been my dream.” In Nam, Kara-France faces a durable opponent. The 36-yearold Hawaiian made his UFC debut in September in a unanimous decision loss to Sergio Pettis. Despite being ranked in the division’s top 10, Kara-France said he had no issues welcoming an unranked opponent to Auckland. “I told the UFC I just need to be on this card. Looking at the roster right now, pretty much everyone has a fight so it was pretty hard to get someone higher up. I’m just happy to have enough time to get an opponent and be on this card with my teammates Dan and Brad. Hopefully this could be on the main card, I think I deserve it.”
Former English cricket captain Michael Vaughan has slammed the International Cricket Council’s rankings and questioned the Black Caps’ standing on them ahead of the Boxing Day test in Melbourne. The Black Caps sit second on the ICC test rankings, three places ahead of Australia who dispatched them easily in Perth in the opening match of a three-test series earlier in the month. Speaking ahead of the second test, which began yesterday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Vaughan said the ICC rankings were “absolute garbage”. “I have no idea how – New Zealand have won plenty of series over the course of the last two years – but for them to be second, and where it stands out for me that the rankings can’t be right is that England in test match cricket are third, and England for three or four years have struggled in test match cricket, particularly overseas,” Vaughan said. “They have won series at home. “(England) have only just drawn the Ashes in English conditions, they only just beat Ireland. I think the rankings are a little bit confusing. “I certainly don’t, in my opinion, have New Zealand as the second best test match nation in the world. I think, particularly over here in Australia, Australia are a far better test match team.” The Australians sit fifth on the traditional rankings but second on the new world test championship. India is atop of both tables. The Black Caps have won eight of their past 10 series, including a 1-0 series defeat of England, and drew 1-1 in Sri Lanka, where Australia was crushed 3-0 three years ago. However, Vaughan insisted India would be the only team to give Australia a test on home soil. “I think there are two teams, India and Australia, they are the best test match teams in the world, without question. I think there is only one team that can come here and put Australia under pressure, that was 12 months ago, that they won here, India,” he said. “There was no Smith, no Warner, no [Marnus] Labuschagne in the Australian ranks in that series, I think the series later on next year, when India arrive back here, hopefully everyone will be fit. “That Indian attack has got the pace, it has also got the spin; the batting unit has got all the experience. I only see one team at this stage that can compete with Australia here and that is India.”

Positive news for Stokes NZME Ben Stokes’ father and former Kiwis player Ged is in “a stable condition” but remains in intensive care in Johannesburg, with the England all-rounder due to return to training. Stokes, who rushed to the hospital bed after his father was taken ill on Monday evening, could now play in the Boxing Day test against South Africa, with Ged’s condition showing signs of improvement. Ged Stokes, a former Kiwis forward and assistant coach, had travelled from Christchurch to support his son during the tests. A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board said: “He remains in intensive care, but has responded positively to treatment and is now in a stable condition.” The ECB added: “The Stokes family wishes to thank every-
one for their support and in particular the medical practitioners in South Africa for their care of Ged. “The England and Wales Cricket Board continues to request that the media and public respect Ben and his family’s privacy at this time.” Stokes sat out a lengthy training session on Christmas Eve but his intention to rejoin the group ahead of the series opener against the Proteas suggests he is at least considering playing. While England will leave that decision entirely up to him, it would solve one selection problem among many. The tourists have been hit by an illness bug in the camp ever since their arrival in South Africa and while Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer appear to have shaken it off in time, three other squad members are now affected.

Damion Lee made a statement on a rare big stage this season for injury-ravaged Golden State. Lee had 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, Draymond Green scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half and the Warriors beat the Houston Rockets 116-104 yesterday. “I’m thankful that we got the win, but there’s still things that I feel I have to get better at day in and day out to fully solidify myself as an NBA player and not a two-way,” Lee said. D’Angelo Russell added 20 points, and Glenn Robinson III had 18 to help the Warriors win their third straight and end the Rockets’ four-game winning streak. Golden State improved to 8-24. “We’re probably not going to play a bigger game than this all year,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “A national TV game against the Rockets. This game meant a lot to us.” Russell Westbrook had 30 points and 12 rebounds for Houston. James Harden had 24 points and 11 assists, and Danuel House Jr. had 18 points. “We had a lot of great opportunities that we just didn’t convert,” Harden said. “It’s pretty simple.” Westbrook had his ninth consecutive game of at least 20 points, the longest by any Rockets player other than Harden since Tracy McGrady did it in 10 straight games in 2007. “For whatever reason we just didn’t get it done,” Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said. “It’s too bad we didn’t play with the spirit and energy we usually have.” Green also had 11 rebounds. He gave the Warriors the lead for good with just under five minutes left in the third quarter on a driving layup. “It’s been a really trying season for us,” Green said. “To come out and get a win against a very good basketball team feels good.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Every successful person has a story of pain. It’s what makes attainment worthwhile. While you don’t seek pain, you don’t run from it, either. You learned long ago that the only way out is through. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Announcing your plan is dicey. What if then you don’t follow through? What if telling everyone is so exciting that doing it seems far less fun and you lose motivation? Keep your intentions on the down low. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Some of the big thinkers have declared the power of thought immeasurable, while others categorise thought’s usefulness differently, downgrading it from the wisdom of just being. What’s your take? CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): In over your head? That’s what those swimming lessons were for. All the same rules apply. Don’t thrash. Make the moves that will get you to the surface where you can float. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Everyone around wants you to succeed. Even the ones who know they’ll be jealous are rooting for you nonetheless. Launch now while the wind is beneath your wings. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your expectations will be revealed through your behaviour. They will learn your rules by the reactions you give when your expectations are unmet, met or surpassed. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Changing your learning habits changes everything. Having greater knowledge of an area will allow you to master it and be rid of a certain related problem forever. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Find someone who has danced in this field before and knows where all the slippery slopes, rabbit holes and traps are. Connect; ask questions; request guidance; take a lesson; make a plan. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Some people don’t like it when people tell them more than they wanted to know, but for you it’s pure entertainment. They’ll spill their colourful pasts and secret intentions. Riveting! CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You are living a truly interesting life and have interesting things to talk about, although you may not realise it until you have the benefit of contrast. Go forward and converse. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Facts don’t get to be facts just by showing up factually. That’s why publishers, law enforcement and parents of teenagers apply the magic of fact-checking. Apply the same rules to feelings. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You can feel when the energy goes out of a room, a conversation or a task. This is the natural progression, but it’s just as natural for you to drum it back up if that’s what you need to do.

HARRIS, Tim – 29/12/1957 – 27/12/2016 I watch you everyday I am always very near I know deep in your heart you realise I am here I watch you while you sleep In your bed at home I hear you when you speak to me, when you are on your own. You cannot understand The reason why I have gone But I will never leave you, I am there to keep you strong. Talk to me I hear you Though you may not see We share an unbroken bond that will always be. Death wont keep us apart for our love is forever just remember me in your heart and one day we will be together. Live your life and live it full don't waste a single day. Remember I am always with you every step of the way. Always loved and forever missed. You will always remain in our hearts. Mayweather tops list of highest-paid NZME Retired boxer Floyd Mayweather has never been one to shy away from flaunting his wealth. Now, Forbes has revealed just how much the 42-year-old has made over the past decade. Mayweather topped Forbes’ list of the highest paid sport stars for the past decade, earning a staggering $NZ1.37b, despite fighting just 10 times in as many years. The American retired in August of 2017 after stopping UFC
superstar Conor McGregor in their boxing match. It was the richest bout in boxing history, earning Mayweather an estimated $433 million. It was just one of a number of lucrative paydays over Mayweather’s career, with his 2015 bout against Manny Pacquiao also earning him close to $290m. Mayweather topped the rich list ahead of footballers Cristiano Ronaldo ($NZ1.2b) and Lionel Messi ($NZ1.13b), with NBA superstar LeBron James
($NZ1.02b) and tennis legend Roger Federer ($NZ964m) rounding out the top five. While he retired in 2017, Mayweather was again in the ring last year for a exhibition bout against young Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa. In the boxing-only exhibition, Mayweather embarrassed Nasukawa, knocking him down a number of times before the fight was eventually waved off. Mayweather was paid $NZ13m for the bout, which lasted 2min12sec.
