RACE NIGHT REUNITE Another chapter in the remarkable story of harBy Matt Markham ness racing legend Ricky May’s comeback is matt.m@theguardian.co.nz set to open tonight at Addington Raceway in Christchurch. Almost exactly nine months after the Methven’s horseman’s heart stopped beating during the middle of a race in Central Otago, May will tonight reunite, for the first time in an official race, with the horse he was driving that fateful day, A G’s White Socks. May died that day, but due to a number of factors, including the behaviour of A G’s White Socks, who came to a halt with May motionless out of the back of the cart, he was able to be revived and now lives to tell the quite incredible story. And for his part in the whole story, A G’s White Socks is a little bit special, according to May. “I feel pretty fond of him, he helped save my life,” he said this week. The pair will resume their racing partnership tonight at Addington, as the both begin their preparation for the biggest race of the year, the New Zealand Trotting Cup on the second Tuesday in November – a race May just happens to have won a record seven times. Victory this year all things considered, would warrant its own story. A best seller, without doubt.

The children on the bus don’t need to wear masks, need to wear masks, need to wear masks – but they can if they want to. Health Minister Chris Hipkins announced that, as of Monday, it will be compulsory for everyone aged 12 and over to wear a face covering on public transport, including shared rides such as Uber and taxis, and planes under Alert Level 2 and above. Mid Canterbury students do not travel to school on public transport, with Pearsons Coachlines operating 26 school runs, and they effectively travel within their school bubbles. “It’s mandatory for public transport and school buses aren’t public transport,” Pearsons manager, Mark Cook, said. “In Christchurch kids can catch public buses but ours are under private contract and they all go to the same school anyway. “So, no compulsory masks at this stage, but if the kids want to wear a mask by all means wear it.” The same applies for the Methven Area Bus Group, where Methven Travel operates 14 school bus runs for four local schools. Hipkins said on Wednesday that “secondary school students should be wearing masks” on the school bus, but on Thursday the Government confirmed it was not mandatory on school buses. When it came to public buses, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it was different to the school bus environment as it is usually filled with people who did not know

can use as a face covering,” she said. Hipkins also announced that QR codes would become mandatory on public transport from September 4. The mandatory face covering is only in affect under Alert Level 2 and above and not wearing a face covering on public transport will become an offence, punishable by a $300 infringement notice or a fine of up to a $1000 imposed by the courts. Enforcement of the rules will be light touch – starting with engagement, encouragement and education.
one another. While its school buses were not impacted, a Methven Travel spokeswoman said its passengers on its ski bus and Christchurch airport shuttle services, would have to wear masks as “we are a public bus”. “We are asking them to provide their own mask and do have them for sale in the office as it’s not something we are going to just give out.” The majority of passengers on its skifield services “already have a buff, scarf, or something appropriate anyway that they

All go for new civic centre, library By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
It’s been decades in the dreaming, months in the planning, and finally Ashburton’s new civic centre and library is ready to move off the drawing board. Final design work on the $51.6 million project was unveiled at yesterday’s extraordinary council meeting and it is now very public property, with detailed plans and fly-over images available on the council’s website. And when Athfield architect Trevor Watt released the plans, councillors couldn’t stop smiling. The design work made it very clear that ratepayers would get a seriously big bang for their ratepayer dollars invested, they said. In talking through the detailed design work, built on concept plans approved last year, Watt said he had an absolute commitment to creating a building using design elements that reflected the community and the environment. While there were many key elements that drove the design, Watt said the connection to Baring Square east, reflecting the district’s rural heart, ensuring democracy was on display rather than tucked in a back corner and celebrating the views of the alps were high on the list. The building would be flexible in its internal spaces, future-proofed in its planning and would be a leader in incorporating sustainable features and in encapsulating an historic building a part of the design, he said. “Integrating Pioneer Hall into the design is a unique part of this project. we haven’t found another example in New Zealand of building over a heritage building like this.” When the community was consulted on
The marriage of the past and the future – the Baring Square church with its new administration wing and the district’s future, the soon to be built civic centre and library. the amount of money that should be spent on the new complex, the over-riding request was for the council to go for a top of the line build, one that would last well into the future. There is extensive use of timber, both as an interior and exterior cladding, glass is widely used along with steel as a reference to the district’s grain heritage silos. Colours and materials used incorporate themes and features inspired by the district’s rivers and its agricultural economy. Floor coverings will include Timaru bluestone, timber and areas of woollen carpet tiles. “These will be custom designed, bespoke for Ashburton. A key part of this

project and these buildings is expressing the community. The buildings take on the context of the district in materials and palettes,” Watt said. Library spaces flow over two levels and include a performance area, spaces for wet play areas and craft spaces, an audio and video recording studio and study zones, with a many areas opening out to an east facing courtyard that will include a rain garden. Several exterior walls will be covered in mesh and climbing plants to create living walls. “It’s all built to follow the sun. What makes this building is the nooks and crannies and the custom joinery. This takes it from a standard build to bespoke,” he said. The third level staff work areas continued the flexible work space theme with few meeting rooms and a number of small gathering spaces. The main entrance to the complex will be from Baring Square with a visual link from the clocktower across a revamped square to the civic centre door. There will be a second entrance from Havelock Street directly into the library. In keeping with a drive to ensure all areas could have flexible use, the second level council chamber will be a multi-functional space and can be used for community or council staff functions. It will have an area dubbed the ‘civic balcony’ that provides an area to take in views across Ashburton to the Southern Alps. Watt wrapped up his presentation with fly-over images of the new complex. Mayor Neil Brown said that in adopting the detailed design work, the council gave the green light for the project to go out to construction tender in October. That would ensure construction could
start towards the end of the year, he said. “Today marks an important milestone for this project. It’s been many years in the making and it’s very exciting to have reached this critical point.” With the detailed designs and the flyover available for people to see, councillor Stuart Wilson said the community would be able to see exactly what they were getting for their $51.6 million. “This is a very exciting day for us. Last term we had a workshop where we visualised what could be there, you’ve brought it all together,” deputy mayor Liz McMillan said. The complete design package can be viewed on www.ashburtondc.govt.nz

ASHBURTON A&P
Show planning continues By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
Entries are open for the Ashburton A&P Show as organisers remain positive it will go ahead. Newly-elected association president Peter Stewart has been enthused by the support of the show, scheduled for October 30 and 31. With the Ashburton show traditionally attracting between 3000 to 4000 people, it can not go ahead under Alert Level 2. “We are still planning for it to go ahead, but that’s all going to be dependent around Covid-19 alert levels at the time,” Stewart said. “I’m personally looking forward to having a show here in Ashburton and the committee is all of the same thinking, not one person wants to pull the plug, but we are going into this with our eyes wide open. “Everything is coming along nicely and we have a meeting next month when we’ll see what the situation is and take it from there.” The community is behind the show going ahead, he said, and they had received a steady number of applications for trade and market sites. “People generally wait until the last minute but we have some strong support from the

It might be shaping up as the retail year from hell, but Ashburton’s CBD business owners say they’re fighting back and are committed to turning the tide and creating a vibrant and thriving town centre. They’ve joined forces, formed an action group with an action plan and they’re hoping to bring everyone who makes their living in the CBD on board. Their goal is simple, member Bob McDonald said, getting the best possible outcome for Ashburton. It’s a group that has no formal shape and it’s one that grew
ASA entries open Entries have opened for the Ashburton Society of Arts 56th Annual Exhibition. The society’s annual art calendar highlight will have its opening night at the Ashburton Art Gallery on October 19. Spokesperson Jen Dearborn said tickets would go on sale that month, and members were hoping the country would be at Alert Level 1 by that time, so the usual 250 people could attend. Entries are open until September 13, and the exhibition will run from October 20 to November 13.

trade sites. “These people are obviously in the same perception as us and are keen to have a show. “We just have to wait and see what the competitive entries are like and that’s something we have no control over either.” The deadline for trade sites closes on Monday and show administrator Lucille Brown said that so far there have been around 80 confirmed trade sites and over 20 market sites booked. “Those numbers are down a
bit on recent years, but that was to be expected, but we are still having bookings come in.” A late flurry of applications was expected, she said while competition entires were open and already being received. The hope is that following the cancellation of the New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch it opens the door for Ashburton, and the other regional shows still planning to go ahead, to cash-in should they be able to go ahead. “We are only an hour away, so
people might come down here and have a look at our show,” Stewart said. The planning continues but is ultimately a waiting game until the committee is forced to make a final decision closer to the event, but Stewart said their intention remains that the show will go on. Ashburton’s annual show began in 1878 and has been held every year since, except between 1942 and 1944, due to World War Two, when the showgrounds were used as an army camp.
Businesses unite to solve CBD issues By Sue Newman
In brief
from small beginnings, a group of retailers trading in the Ashburton Arcade who were concerned about the town’s retail future. They contacted everyone on their email list, called a meeting and the advocacy group was formed. “We’re looking at trying to get businesses in the CBD working together. We all face issues with Covid and the town centre redevelopment. This is absolutely not just a retail group, we’re keen to get everyone involved who does business in the CBD – and outside it,” McDonald said. Every business of any kind in the CBD was working in pretty taxing times on several fronts, he said.
“We’re hoping to get together with the council to see how we can work together, because with Christmas coming up and for some retailers that’s when twothirds of their business income can be achieved, we need to make sure they’re able to keep up and running. if we lose businesses, then we’ll have a new CBD with no-one in it.” When completed, the revamped CBD would be a winner, but the pain of getting there was being felt by both businesses and their customers, McDonald said. “It’s tough out there right now. It’s really not good and it just keeps coming. There are so many distractions but we’re

very focused on getting a project and ticking it off, getting it sorted.” While there had been some pretty slow trading days in recent weeks, McDonald said he was not aware of any local retailers that were close to closing. “But we do have to keep the CBD relevant. If we don’t, the council will have spent all this money in the CBD and it’ll be wasted.” The group plans to meet with the Ashburton District Council to find a way to minimise the impact of redevelopment work on Christmas trade, possibly limiting work to nights and non-trading hours during that time.
Another lucky lotto winner from Ashburton has been found this week. Netherby Four Square sold one of two Second Division Powerball ticket for Wednesday’s draw with the winner claiming $18,808. Both of the big prize winners hailed from Canterbury with the other sold at Fresh Choice Merivale. All counted their were 18 Second Division winners, although only two had the right powerball number on their ticket. No one claimed the $6 million Powerball prize, but one Auckland player scooper $1 million by winning first division. Saturday’s prize has jackpotted to $8 million.
Fire cause a mystery Demolition was set to be completed yesterday on the remains of a century-old Wellington building, but the cause of the fire will remain a mystery. In a statement, police say they finished the scene assessment at the site of the Abel Smith Street building on Wednesday night. “We have been unable to determine the cause of the fire and the building has been returned back to its owners,” the statement said. The building, which was razed by fire on Tuesday, had to be demolished before it was safe for investigators to enter as it was structurally unsafe.
Peaches recalled Peaches imported from the United States are being recalled due to potential contamination with Salmonella bacteria. The Ministry of Primary Industries is recalling loose, fresh yellow-flesh peaches sold between July 10 and August 25 in the North Island. So far, there have been no reported cases of Salmonella enteritidis infection in New Zealand connected to the imported fruit. The recall is of Prima and Sweet Value brand peaches that were sold at numerous New Zealand supermarkets, fruit and vegetable retailers.
Choir open night postponed The Mid Canterbury Choir has postponed its upcoming open night due to Level 2 restrictions. “When we return to Level 1 and it is safe for us to meet and sing, I will advise of a new date,” manager Carol Gunn said. The open night, which was to be held on August 31, is for those who want to find out all about the choir, and who may even consider joining. The pandemic forced the choir into recess on March 16, and it cancelled its first production for 2020 of Messiah. The first choir productions for the year will instead be its Christmas concerts, in Ashburton and Geraldine.

We’re going on a scarecrow hunt By Heather Mackenzie heather.m@theguardian.co.nz
After a false start in April thanks to lockdown, the Methven Scarecrow Trail is all set for the next school holidays. From Saturday, September 26 to Sunday, October 11, children, families or anyone who fancies themselves good at identifying Disney movie characters as scarecrows, will be out walking the streets of Methven, rumpled trail map in hand. “We focus on themes each year that children and younger participants will recognise and we ask those with a more anonymous scarecrow to leave clues via costumes or hints around the scarecrow to help people work it out,” event organiser Gillian Heald said. There is a limit of 40 scarecrows on the trail, any more than that and the trail gets too big, she said. “All sorts of people make scarecrows, from pre-schoolers to professional sculptors, like Hannah Kidd. Ashburton schools get involved too, they make them and we find a display place here in Methven.” Heald said she and fellow organiser Karyn Robertson were disappointed to have to postpone in April, but they were left with little choice. “Postponing it has meant we have had to start from scratch, new signs, new marketing material, new dates, new everything, but under Level 4 in April we just

known for their social distancing abilities, can be safely seen from the street. The trail first began in 2006 as part of the now defunct Methven

ROTARY
Long service rewarded The outstanding efforts of Ashburton Rotarian, Ray King have been recognised by the Ashburton Plains Rotary Club. During a recent meeting of the Rotary Club, King was presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship, Double Sapphire Pin. The Paul Harris Fellowship is awarded to Rotarians who have shown a long-term commitment to Rotary ideals and is one of the highest awards that can be given in Rotary. The Double Sapphire Pin for King symbolises the third time he has been the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship, an award named after Rotary Founder, Paul Harris. King joined Rotary in 1976 and two years later was made director of the Youth Committee. He then spent a year in club administration before becoming president for the 1982-1983 year. Roles undertaken by King since he joined have included; secretary, newsletter editor and co-editor, sergeant, student exchange district committee, vocational committee where he was chairperson and district governor’s representative. In 1994 he was awarded his first Paul Harris Fellowship but not wanting to rest on his laurels, he took another step and became District Governor for Rotary District 9970 in 2002 and 2003. Responsible for all clubs from the Rangitata River to the top of the South Island including the West Coast. The role involved three years on the district’s main committee and during this time King was heavily involved in Rotary International’s Polio Plus Campaign. At the end of his district governorship, he was presented with his second Paul Harris Fellowship Award, earning a sapphire pin in recognition of his

continued service to the Rotary District. King has not limited his community service to Rotary. He has been with the Ashburton District Youth Institute since it was set up 21 years ago supporting the activities and fundraising including the Malvina Major concert – a major undertaking. He continues each year organising and leading the institute’s Kick Start Leadership Course for Year 8 primary school children. In 2003 he became a trustee of
the Mid and South Canterbury Life Education Trust, serving 16 years as a trustee and being chairperson for nine of them. From 2009 to 2012 he served a term on the National Board of Life Education and travelled to Wellington for meetings. He was awarded a life membership last year. Ray has also served a term on the Restorative Justice panel here in Ashburton. Continuing with Rotary, King hosted exchange students and
organised the club’s speech contests. He was again club president in 2016-17 and was sergeant last year. In recognition of his continued community involvement and the 26 years of service following his first Paul Harris Fellowship Award, the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains presented Ray with a Double Sapphire Pin. Police to target speedsters in September By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
Police are urging the public to focus on driving to the posted speed limit as they put an increased focus on speeding. During September, police will carry out targeted enforcement on highways, urban streets, outside schools and through road work areas across MidSouth Canterbury.
“Even when speed doesn’t cause the crash, it is the single biggest determinant in whether anyone is killed, injured, or walks away unharmed,” Aoraki Area Senior Sergeant Dylan Murray said. “A small change in speed makes a big difference to injury severity in a crash – for you and everyone else involved.” Speeding and travelling too fast for the conditions is a contributing factor in around one-
third of all fatal crashes and 15 per cent of all injury crashes, according to police statistics. Murray said the speed limit is just that – a limit – not a target and encouraged drivers to keep a check on their speed and drive to the conditions. “Less speed means less harm”. Figures from the latest road policing data show the dramatic impact of the lockdown. In the Aoraki (Mid-South Can-
terbury) Region, officer-issued speeding infringements fell from 1264 in January to just 694 in March. That is a drop of 338 compared to March 2019 (1032). There were only 379 infringements issued in April, well down on the 1263 in April 2019. However, as the region came out of lockdown life, so too did a return to speeding, with 949 infringements in May and then 999 in June.
Hoardings theft information sought By Susan Sandys susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Police are appealing for information on the vandalism and theft of Labour Party hoardings at Tinwald. And they are taking such incidents seriously, saying anyone witnessing such activity under way should phone 111.
A police spokesperson said yesterday that anyone with information about any of the incidents of damage and theft of the billboards at Tinwald to contact them on 105 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. “We would encourage anyone that witnesses this type of activity to call and report it on 105, or 111 if it is happening now,” the spokesperson added.
“Although police are not able to monitor every election hoarding, enforcement action may be taken in relation to anyone who is identified as deliberately damaging a sign. “Defacing property is an act of intentional damage and is a criminal offence.” The incidents at Tinwald happened at the weekend. Labour List MP based in Ran-
gitata, Jo Luxton, said it appeared to be a targeted attack on her party’s hoardings, with no damage having been done to other hoardings nearby which belonged to another political party. All 10 of her campaign signs on fences along State Highway One, as well as one from a private residence on Grove Street, were ripped off and removed. See also letters on P12
Since 1954 there have been tractors lined up on one of the Gluyas Motor Group’s lots. Over the years those tractors have crossed a range of brands, but last month that 66-year association ended with the sale of Johnson Gluyas Tractors business to Norwood. That sale wraps up a line of the family business his grandfather Dick started when he secured the Ford franchise dealership for the company in 1954, current owner Peter Gluyas said. The company grew from its Ashburton site to open a second yard in Tinwald for a period, before consolidating back on its original base in Kermode Street after Gluyas took over from dad John in 1987. Over the following years Ford bought New Holland and then Fiat bought Ford New Holland. Gluyas continued to sell tractors and was keen to increase his reach, establishing a business with partner Chris Johnson in Timaru in 1995. In 2013 Ford tractor sales in Ashburton moved to a new site on Alford Forest Road, as part of the Johnson Gluyas brand. The company also established a base in Oamaru. The business continued to grow, Kubota became part of the range and eventually Gluyas said he was faced with two options – invest and expand or sell. He opted to sell, and on August 17 Norwood became the new owners of Johnson Gluyas Tractors business in Ashburton, Timaru and Oamaru. The decision to sell wasn’t an easy one. Tractors had been part of the Gluyas company’s stock in trade for more than 60 years, part of his life for 33. The sale, however, has not ended Gluyas’ association with the rural workhorses. Stored in sheds and garages around the district he has a collection of seven – or is it nine – old tractors, most in working order. In buying the Johnson Gluyas business, Norwood said it was committed to ensuring clients continued to receive the exceptional support that had been provided at their local dealership. All Johnson Gluyas Tractors staff have been offered a place in the Norwood team. Norwood’s network now spans 25 locations across New Zealand.

A big day of big decisions By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
A
lot of what goes on around a council meeting table is pretty dull stuff, the bread and butter issues that are absolutely important to keep a district ticking along. But every now and again there’s some big, meaty stuff that elected members have to get their heads around. Yesterday was one of those days, when workshops and meetings kept them hard at it from early morning until late afternoon. It was a red letter day in many ways, one that signals the start of a huge project that’s been talked about for a couple of
decades – the construction of the district’s new civic centre and library. We’ve had our say on its location and we’ve had our say on what the building should contain in the way of facilities. There’ve been countless meetings between the experts and the council’s project control group and yesterday we got to see the results of that work. Councillors have signed off the detailed design and this kickstarts the construction tender phase of the project. It’s a giant step forward and that means the project is basically now out in the public arena with physical construction expected to start towards the end of this year. And if that wasn’t enough, yesterday councillors definitely
earned their pay cheque as they grappled with the incredibly complex government driven drinking water reform project, Three Waters. Signing on in stage one was a no-brainer – put our name on the list and get a $4 million hand-out. Signing on to stage 2 might also be a no-brainer, sign on and get another cash handout. But that’s where it might stop. Making a final commitment would see the district become part of a huge national water regulator that could effectively take the control of our drinking water out of our hands. Given the Havelock North drinking water debacle a couple of years back it’s easy to understand why the government has
stepped in to play water quality big brother. and that’s fine in districts that lag behind in infrastructure investment. The kicker for us is that we’ve already spent plenty of money getting our drinking water and waste water issues sorted. If we sign on to the final deal, what’s in it for us? Will we end up propping up the councils that haven’t done what they should in the past? Right how it’s money for free, but behind the scenes what is the government control of drinking water actually signalling? Could it be the beginning of a further erosion of communities running their own patch? Local body amalgamation by another name.

In brief Bad dogs There are 63 dogs living on properties around the Ashburton District that have made it onto the council’s black list. Of those 58 have been classified as menacing and five as dangerous. Of the five dangerous dogs, four have been given this category after sworn evidence was provided and one at the owner’s admission. Of the 58 dogs categorised as menacing, 36 were given this listing by behaviour, 4 by breed character and 17 by the schedule for their breed. Currently there are no disqualified dog owners in the district, but three owners are on probation.
Liquor licensing Over the past year the Ashburton district licensing committee processed 279 applications. Of those 12 were new on, off or club licences, 28 were renewals, 117 special licences, 167 managers’ certificates and 11 temporary licences.
Dog infringements Over the past year the council received 684 complaints about badly behaving dogs. This was well down on the 830 complaints received in the previous year. The most common call-out was for dogs found wandering, 362. Barking dogs were the cause of 88 complaints, again well down on the 106 recorded the previous year.

Chinese village
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
A sign depicting the history of the Allens Road Chinese village has been completed and the council is now making arrangements with the family to have this erected on the site. Discussions have been held on the style of fence along Allens Road and this will be completed when siting of access to the village is finalised.
The junk generated by one local authority has become a sought-after treasure for another. While old fashioned lollipop parking meters are out of vogue in most towns and cities, not so in Ashburton where they still take pride of place on the inner town’s side streets. The meters, however, often fail, often need to be repaired, but with the lollipops now consigned to history in most parts of New Zealand, finding the parts needed to effect a fix is often problematic for the Ashburton District Council. But the council team was innovative, spotting an opportunity when other councils opted to step their pay to park systems into the 21st century. When Blenheim replaced its 300 plus lollipop machines, Ashburton was quick to act, heading off parking memorabilia collectors to snare some of the discards. It secured 21 machines that have been used to prolong the life of those left patrolling Ashburton’s parking spaces. It was money well spent, council strategy and compliance manager Jane Donaldson said. “Many of ours were broken. They’re so old it wasn’t worth trying to find new ones because they’re all being replaced as part of the town centre work. We’re keeping them limping along until then, there was no point in us throwing good money after bad,” she said. Many of the meters have already been removed to make way for redevelopment work and the remainder are on borrowed time. They’ll be replaced by parking sensors, similar to those already in use on East Street. These allow a set period of free parking before an infringement notice is generated. The only pay-to-park machines will then be in the Eastfield car park. Free parking will, however, come with a few conditions, Donaldson said. “If we don’t make enough money out of infringements from parking activities, the council will have to revisit this and you can’t have no enforcement at all because people who work in the CBD would park on the street all day and that would upset retailers. “It’s all a bit of an unknown yet, we’re not sure how it will go.”
Business estate Stages 2 and 3 of this development work is progressing with kerb and channel construction along with water, power, stormwater, phone and sewage services being laid in both stages. Two land sale agreements were signed during the Covid-19 lockdown and one, comprising 2 hectares in the existing development, has had earthworks for new buildings started.
Digitising of records Since August 2015, 32,9223 building, resource consent and property files have been scanned as part of the council’s work to have all of its records stored electronically.
Walking and cycling The district’s walking and cycling strategy is being revised to make it more user friendly and easier to understand. It will go out for consultation when this work is completed, likely to be towards the end of this year.
Seven new cases Parking meters are set to become a thing of the past in the Ashburton CBD. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN
The amount generated through parking metes in the last financial year was around $62,000 with an additional $91,000 coming in from infringement notices issued by parking wardens for issues such as expired warrants of fitness or out of date registration. Another $80,000 came into the parking
account from court-imposed fines, but commission on this money was then paid back to the Justice Department. While that might show the parking account had a solid income, its outgoings were high in wages and for its share of council departmental overheads, Donaldson said.
There were seven new cases of Covid-19 recorded in New Zealand yesterday, six of them in the community. Director of Public Health Caroline McElnay said one case was an imported case, a woman in her 20s who tested positive in Christchurch in managed isolation on day three of her stay. The other six cases have all been linked to the current cluster, one via a workplace and the others are household contacts of previous cases.

reg King has always felt the Tinwald complex had more to give. Boasting a renowned tavern, renowned for its fiercely loyal locals, hosting good music and providing a great atmosphere. An adjoining bottle store to cater for those perhaps not quite as at home in the next door setting and nearby accommodation complex, capable of catering for all walks of life who choose to stop over. Then there was of course a restaurant. Well regarded as a mainstay on the local eating
scene, known for a family-friendly atmosphere with good, comfort food. On face value, it seemed like it was a combination that should work. But King, known for his development prowess and taking a business forward into the future, could see more and so he
set about building his dream for one of the most under-utilised areas in Ashburton. He could have completely changed the face of the entire complex, but instead chose to focus on one small section at a time – and developing the dining option within the area became the first focus.

Level 4 lockdown halted progress for a number of months, but thanks to the hard work and dedication of all those involved in the process from the start, right through to the finish, the final product is fast gaining traction as a must-visit venue for those in Mid Canterbury and further afield.
While its predecessor, The Stables – a staple of Mid Canterbury’s for decades – had been focused on family and traditional hearty pub grub, King wanted something different. Something a little more upmarket, a little more fine dining and a little different to anything else available in the Tinwald
corridor. “There were some really strong similarities between the menu at Stables and the menu in the Tavern next door, so it was a case of coming up with something new to try and open up the market to a whole new customer base. But it’s also been about
building the entire complex and creating something that caters for everyone. “If you’re after a more relaxed, bistro type meal then you can head into the tavern, but for something a little different and a little more upmarket then Alluvial is the place to go.”

he Alluvial menu speaks volumes for the direction King is heading. It’s good, appealing food options with a little bit of finesse, decorated in an inviting setting which offers warmth and comfort from the moment you walk in the door. Using New Zealand-sourced ingredients and flavours, the menu, which will change with the seasons, is wide and offers plenty of options, while also catering for the younger eaters. The current winter menu features crowd favourites like blue cod and T-bone steak, but also some different options including venison medallions and a roasted beetroot risotto, among a whole lot more. That follows a mouth-watering entrée list, including fresh mussels, empanadas and the hearty seafood chowder. Split into three sections, the restaurant can comfortably seat up to 65 patrons at a time with a bar set up to the side with King encouraging after-work drinks or social gatherings to come through the door. During the warmer months, patrons will be able to sit outside and enjoy watching the world go by in front of them as they relax and enjoy the good food and drink available. Set to face the front of State Highway 1 through the heart of Tinwald, the restaurant looks inviting from the moment it comes into sight.

s well as the development of Alluvial Restaurant at the front of the main building in the complex, King saw another opportunity in the former space used by Stables out the back. A beautiful, big and open space, the room which formerly housed the
restaurant has been developed into a conference and function area which is available for bookings. Containing everything that any group could require, the space is self-contained and is capable of holding up to 120 people. “It seemed like a logical option to
add to the complex as a whole,” King said. “The obvious hope is that is has a spin-off for the other areas of the business, such as the accommodation, but it makes sense to have a meeting all day and then pop next door for a meal and a few drinks too.”

OUR VIEW
Rebuilding our safe haven By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
A
nd now, we begin the steps to rebuilding. Not ignoring those foundations that have already been put in place over the 17 months since Brenton Tarrant walked into the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch and changed this country forever, but yesterday’s sentencing was a huge step towards moving forward. What unfolded on that day last year we hope will never be repeated or seen again in this country. We hope that for our own sake, but also for those who may hail from another country and call New Zealand home. We should be a safe haven, far enough away from the rest of the world that we’re different in the way that we think and act. But in this particular case, we failed. For four days, Tarrant has had to sit and listen to victims, family members of victims and members of the Muslim community echo the words that he has achieved nothing, that his actions have only made things stronger and that he has earned no reward for his terrorism. They talked quietly, they spoke with raw passion and emotion, they’ve shouted at him and unleashed some pent-up anger and frustration and he deserved nothing less than to have to sit through it all, to hear how much he’d hurt people and how much he’d ruined their lives. And while there’s no evidence to suggest any of it actually registered with such a cruel individual, it did serve a purpose. For so many, that opportunity to face the man who changed their world in such a tragic and horrific nature was a huge step in the healing process. And now is the time to heal, as individuals, as a Muslim community, but, most importantly, as an entire country. How we take those next steps is up to us. We’ve altered so much of the way we went about life since March 15 last year, the way we looked at certain aspects of society, the way we treated and spoke of them, and it’s critical that the effort continues for years to come. It would be easy to slip back into old habits, to revert to what we once thought was OK, but we’re better than that and we can continue to make a difference and show the rest of the world that New Zealand is not a place where you are judged on your looks, appearance or religious beliefs. Yesterday marked a significant milestone, for sure – but it’s really only the beginning of making New Zealand the country it could be, and the country that it should be.
YOUR VIEW Election hoardings The removal of election signs is a sign that the opposition feel threatened. Rather than deface the signs, the removal is a defense attack by opposition supporters to deny the voting public a reminder of the choice of candidates for the upcoming election. This cowardly act demonstrates that Jo Luxton is having
a beneficial impact in this community and her opponents’ supporters cannot handle it. As always, there will be more than one person who knows who did it and where the signs are, but they don’t have the guts to report a crime. While it may seem to be an inevitable part of the election campaign, attacks such as these are an attack on the democratic process we have in this country.

many people are suffering financially, you go overboard, spend up large and rub it in our faces! Driving, phones a deadly mix
O
ver this Covid related unsettled time we have all been through, I have done some soul searching. Mostly the reflections have been about what’s really important in life. There’s a lot we could all do without and still get along just fine eh? I’ve also thought a lot about my career and as much as I understand the fickleness of a job in media, since the appearance of this nasty wee bugger, I have been a touch more anxious. One thing I have decided is that I would be absolutely hopeless as a police officer. I would be too focused on one thing, to be any good at the job. That one thing is Driving Distracted! I know I’ve bashed my gums

plenty on the wireless and written about it here before now, but it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. One day last week I saw three people driving towards me on the Ashburton River Bridge, on their phones texting! How freaking ignorant can people be! What do I do if they start wandering across the centre line? If that wasn’t bad enough, I was driving home on Wednesday and about to go under the viaduct and onto Melcombe Street, when a bloke drove straight through the give way and under the viaduct towards me. To be fair this does happen
sometimes as I don’t think people realise they have to give way if they are heading East under it. The give way sign has only been there for a year or so, it was a bit of a free-for-all before that. This particular gentleman in his white four-wheel-drive wouldn’t have seen the sign. Not because it’s not in a very prominent location, but because he had his view impeded from his hand holding his cellphone up to his gob at the time. “You’re okay mate, I’ll just swing my car out of your way, so you can carry on with your very important phone call. Sorry for giving you a look and flipping you the bird.” I felt like doing a Roscoe P Coltrane 180 and tearing after him like he was the Duke boys to
give him a piece of my mind. But no, I just continued home, while breaking the world record for the amount of swear words used when describing an idiot. And before we hop on the ‘bloody kids and their phones’ train, this was a middle-aged bloke. The stats are scary. Drivers texting are 23 times more likely to have a crash than drivers who aren’t. Twenty-three times!! If you send or read a text while driving, it takes your eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds. At 90km/h, that means you drive blind-folded for the length of a rugby field. As scary as those facts are, they aren’t changing habits, so it’s time to hit people where it hurts most, in the wallet or
purse. One of the best features on my phone is the do not disturb while driving feature. I’m sure if the fines for using a hand-held phone while driving were severe enough, more people would use that feature, or just commit to not using the phone behind the wheel. I beg you, commit to it, for the sake of road safety and my blood pressure. Till next week, Hoo Roo, Phill P Coltrane. Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. Real scrutiny of pandemic response essential
I
n my late June column in this publication I wrote about the critical importance of our country having secure and competent border procedures in place to minimise the risk of another Covid-19 outbreak. Having been assured by the Government that regular testing of frontline border workers would be carried out, it is hugely disappointing to find out that this was not happening on the scale that the public understood it would be. This disconnect between the apparent expectations of ministers and what was actually occurring is unacceptable and a huge red flag in terms of the oversight of the whole pandemic response. Good government is about being responsible and taking responsibility and it is very

clear that a more transparent and well-managed approach is needed. The consequences of the lack of clarity around this has been considerable distress for many people across the country, the loss of 250 jobs a day, a $75 million per day cost to the Auckland economy while in lockdown and $1.6 billion more to pay for the extension of the wage subsidy across the country. Recent figures on missed mortgage payments from the Reserve Bank show that many New Zealanders are already facing serious financial stress and this is only going to get worse due to the impact of the latest
period of increased Covid-19 alert levels. I believe that we need a dedicated Border Protection Agency to provide comprehensive oversight and management of Covid-19 at the border, as well as other public health threats. Opposition Leader Judith Collins has indicated that the establishment of such an agency would be a key priority under a National-led Government. Other elements of National’s recently-announced border security plan include: ■■ Requiring international travellers to provide evidence of a negative Covid-19 test before arriving in New Zealand. ■■ Beefing up contact tracing capabilities by rapidly deploying Bluetooth applications and exploring alternative technologies, such as a
Covid Card. ■■ Widening the availability of Covid-19 testing nationwide, including implementing regular testing of aged-care workers and increasing opportunities for testing within aged-care facilities. ■■ Preparing a more effective response to future outbreaks, should they occur, allowing lockdowns to be more targeted and shorter in duration. We should be utilising Parliament’s capabilities to make our systems stronger. Initially a request by National’s Health spokesperson Dr Shane Reti to re-convene Parliament’s Health Select Committee was refused by the Government. This was a slap in the face for New Zealanders who deserve a democratic examination of the
response and identification of areas for improvement. Thankfully, however, this committee will now meet to review the response to the second wave of Covid-19 in New Zealand, including questioning of the Director-General for Health. Large-scale problems faced by essential workers in agriculture, horticulture, manufacturing and other sectors who have been refused permission to travel in and out of Auckland during the regional lockdown have highlighted the Government’s lack of preparedness for this scenario. We cannot afford to brush aside failings in the response to date and neglect to make improvements going forward. Amy Adams is the National MP for the Selwyn District

Bonus Bonds coming to an end RNZ ANZ is winding up investments in the 50-year-old Bonus Bonds scheme because low interest rates are reducing the prize pool – and could fall even further. More than $3 billion is invested in Bonus Bonds which is managed by ANZ Investment Services, a subsidiary of ANZ bank. In a statement, ANZ Investment Services said it is expecting just two more prize draws. Bonus Bonds was launched by the government and initially run through the Post Office in 1970. Instead of earning interest each bond gave bondholders one entry into the monthly prize draw. The top prize in the monthly draw was $1 million. Ben Kelleher, managing director retail and business banking for ANZ, said it was constantly reviewing investments. “Low interest rates have reduced the investment returns of the scheme which affects the size of the prize pool. “It has now become apparent those trends are likely to continue in the medium term.” Kelleher said the bank was watching the official cash rate – currently at 0.25 per cent – and believed it could fall even further in early 2021 due to the need for the global economy to grapple with the Covid-19 pandemic. The board of ANZIS decided to start winding up the scheme by the end of October and returning funds to bondholders. “The board believes current reserves are sufficient for bondholders to be confident they will receive back their initial investment,” Kelleher said. “Investors have two choices. They can redeem their Bonus Bonds before the scheme starts to wind up, or stay in the scheme and be entitled to a share of the
remaining reserves, after expenses, when the scheme is wound up.” The most recent annual report for the scheme was for the year ended March 31, 2019 and describes the bonds as “an incredibly popular iconic investment for New Zealanders”. It said some $39 million of prizes were awarded to bondholders that year. It dis-

The New Zealand stock exchange website is operating again, but trading remains in a halt, after a likely cyber attack took it down about 11am yesterday for the third day in a row. Trading on the NZX was halted after its website went down yesterday morning. The exchange decided it would not resume trading yesterday, despite the website returning to normal function. That followed similar trading halts prior to the market closing on Tuesday, and for most of Wednesday after an offshore cyberattack. The type of attack is known as a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS), which overwhelms the online service rendering it inoperable. A spokesperson for the NZX says if the website goes down, they cease trading be-

tributed more than one million prizes to investors. But it warned that “this year’s prize pool has reduced from the previous year. This has been primarily driven by falling interest rates which reduces the scheme’s current and expected future income”. The ANZIS said the prize draws for this September and October should go ahead

cause retail punters cannot see the market announcements being made. Technology expert Peter Griffin said the attack is most likely from the vigilante group Anonymous, rather than the likes of cyber criminals looking to extract money from the stock exchange. He says the fact the attack has happened three days in a row suggests it’s sophisticated and said it is possible for the NZX to fend off these types of attacks. “Most companies of any size can avoid a denial of service attack taking down their systems these days by literally increasing the capacity, the number of connections, the connectivity through those servers, and the server capacity itself, and this is the era of cloud computing, so when you’ve got Amazon and Google and Microsoft you can automatically scale up capacity and connectivity across those pipes as well. “But the only way really to stop this, is what they’ll be in the midst of at the moment, is trying to shut down the source of this traffic, so it’s going to the internet providers overseas who are facilitating all of that traffic coming to New Zealand and saying ‘you need to shut down these servers where this traffic is coming from’.” Griffin said Spark, the NZX’s telecommunications provider, can also block all the IP addresses the attacks are coming from.

The incredible Eisenberg V8, and the Norton Jack Moore Prototype.
N
ow in its 15th year, Salon Privé is a must-attend event for any motoring aficionado, and it’s not just cars either. The event has an enviable reputation for attracting best-of-breed motorcycles and motorcars. The Salon Privé Concours d’Elégance takes place on Wednesday September 23. Confirmed entries include a rare 1948 Norton 500cc Jack Moore Prototype with
a remarkable history. In 2014, the remains of one of the second prototype engines became available through an online auction house. Then an article about the first prototype engine (unidentified at the time) appeared in Classic Bike magazine. By late 2018, the current owner had acquired both engines plus enough parts to carry out a complete reconstructione. After nearly 18 months of careful restoration of the engine, gearbox and chassis parts,
the construction of the second Jack Moore Norton was completed in October 2019, back on the road 72 years after first being tested at the Bracebridge factory! At opposite end of the spectrum, Eisenberg Racing will officially launch the world’s most powerful and compact production V8 motorbike ever made. Designed and built in collaboration with Prodrive and Eisenberg racing, the Eisenberg V8 pushes the boundaries of
engineering to the extreme. The modern-day muscle retro-looking bike features a 3000cc V8 engine that weighs just 80kg and delivers 480hp. It revs like a Ferrari to 11,000rpm and has a top speed of 250mph. The engine has been designed to fit within the tight packaging constraints of a normal motorbike, as opposed to building a bike around a large V8 American muscle car engine.

The partnership between one of the most creative and influential designers and the brand symbolic of Italian style comes to fruition with a Special Series Primavera.
Vespa In 1946, Vespa made its début on the roads of a Europe devastated by the recent conflict but, equally, full of creativity and a desire for renewal. 73 years on, and having produced more than 18 million units, Vespa is a global benchmark for style, elegance and technology. A brand known and loved across the world that, with more than 1.5 million vehicles produced in the last decade, is experiencing one of the most successful and dynamic periods in its history.
S
ean Wotherspoon is one of the rising stars of youth fashion in the USA. He is pure energy, endlessly curious, ahead of his time, an experimenter, and a fanatic of street culture and everything this might encompass in terms of fashion and colour. The partnership between the Vespa brand and Sean Wotherspoon presents the first shining examples of a relationship that is guiding Vespa towards a new, brave, irreverent and fun style. Vespa Primavera Sean Wotherspoon is a limited edition that expresses all the creative energy of both Vespa and Sean. These stars of their time are united by a love of colour and innovative experimentation that anticipates tomor-
row’s trends and appeals to anyone who loves to play with fashion and ride in style. Sean creates a new style for the young urban tribes, but one with a capacity to win over a much wider audience. Sean gives Vespa style elements a vintage contemporary twist in what is his trademark manner. He does this by drawing on his love of everything old school, using a kaleidoscopic mix and match approach rooted in the 80s and 90s. The livery of Vespa Primavera Sean Wotherspoon stands out for its explosion of eighties-style colour, showcased with flamboyant irreverence, featuring yellow, red, dark green and aquamarine.

Spoilt for choice SUBARU’S BOXER
By Roger Hart
T
ROAD TEST
he beauty of this mildly electrified XV Sport e-Boxer Hybrid is that most drivers, unless they have been told so, won’t be aware of this. For except for some different badges and the electric blue exterior colour its looks, controls, driving manners and ability to tackle the likes of ski-field roads very much mirror that of its straight petrol siblings. There’s two of those – the Sport costing $37,490 and Premium which is complete with leather seats (front ones heated), a sun-roof, dedicated sat-nav and other extras. It costs $42,490. That’s the same price as the Hybrid version featured today, which is only available in Sport rather than Premium trim. Now for those who may not be aware, fundamentally this high-riding and quite bold looking XV is an Impreza Sport on steroids, and the smallest model in Subaru’s impressive SUV/crossover line up. They all now have updated versions of the excellent camera based EyeSight safety technology, with its array of driver assist and safety features. These include adaptive cruise, pre-collision braking control, lane keep assist/ departure warning and more, most of which remain out of sight and out of mind until if, or when needed. The e-Boxer mild hybrid assist system comprises of a 12.3kW/66Nm electric motor and 113.5kW lithium-ion battery working together with the free revving
four cylinder, 2.0-litre Boxer petrol engine. The latter in this application produces110kW @ 6000rpm and 196Nm of torque. The electric motor/battery adds its input immediately you accelerate away from standstill, meaning even more enthusiastic take-offs than the straight petrol models as the smooth operating, seven-step Lineatronic CVT unobtrusively does its job. At 100km/h open road cruising the rev counter sits at 1600rpm. All of the hybrid drive-modes are automatically controlled by the system and not the driver, so it swaps between petrol or electric or combinations of both depending on both the driver and or driving conditions, meaning you can’t select EV mode and then sneak silently up the drive at night! But then downhill, even when descending from the highest point of Oak Grove to the Walnut Ave intersection, the EV mode provides the drive. So what are the driving and economy advantages of buying this Hybrid rather than a straight petrol version? Well, as mentioned above the additional low end torque is certainly noticeable, and there are of course fuel savings. Subaru say these can be up to 14 per cent when commuting/driving in built up areas, and then 7 per cent better overall, with a stated overall figure of 6.5L/100km. During my time with it, when an eclectic variety of town and country roads and some tracks were driven, the on-board information showed an overall figure of exactly 7.0L/100km. Such tracks and ski-field roads are also well within this XV Hybrid’s capabilities, for it retains the 220mm ground clear-
ance, decent approach/departure angles and X-mode traction system of its petrol siblings. X-mode, which enhances all-wheeldrive control and stability on loose surfaces as well as working in conjunction with the hill descent control, comes into its own in such driving situations, and this all happens without you needing to think or do too much about it all. But then on everyday roads including corners of any severity, even though it sits just over 1.7 metres tall and is a little heavier with battery beneath the boot floor, it still has a desirably low centre of gravity. In concert with the precise steering, well set up suspension and grip from symmetrical all-wheel-drive system this means precise, nimble, and for those who appreciate such, enjoyable handling. As well on all such surfaces the long travel suspension does a great job of soaking up bumps and corrugations. The result – it stacks up as an excellent all-round, all-conditions vehicle and well demonstrated this during a midwinter drive I did from Napier to Auckland. Conditions included ice, fog, rain and some interesting inner Waikato roads whilst by-passing Hamilton. While being the smallest Subaru SUV, the cabin layout is user-, four adult friendly with comfortable fabric covered seats complete with contrasting stitching and sufficient space. I liked the steering wheel with its easyto-see and use controls and the other also easy to both reach and identify controls/ switches as well as the large touch-screen. Lifting the tailgate reveals 345-litre luggage space, which expands to over 919 litres with rear seats folded. Because the battery steals the space
occupied by the spare wheel on the petrol models, there’s just a tyre inflation kit in its place.
SUBARU E-BOXER ■■ Pricing: $42,490. Straight petrol Sport $37,490 and Premium $42,490 (plus ORCs). ■■ Hybrid Engine System: 2.0-litre 4 cylinder petrol, 110kW @ 6000rpm and 196Nm of torque @ 4000rpm together with12.3kW/66Nm electric motor and 31.5kWh118V hybrid battery. ■■ Transmission: 7-step Lineartronic CVT with X mode – full time all-wheel-drive. ■■ Quoted Economy: 6.5L/100km. ■■ Safety: 7 air bags - Eyesight driver assist/ safety technology package. 5 star ANCAP rating. ■■ Size: 4625mm long, 1815mm wide, 1730mm high, 2670mm wheelbase. ■■ Tows: 1270kg (braked) ■■ Kerb to kerb turning circle: 10.8 metres. ■■ Warranty: Three year, unlimited km warranty and roadside assistance.
FINALE The self-regenerative electrification of this functional, practical and neat-sized e-Boxer XV both adds to its capabilities as well as allowing one to tread a little lighter fuel-wise on various adventures. However, the choice for me as whether it would be it, or the same priced Premium petrol model would be a difficult one! Especially as I do like having heated seats and a spare wheel for longer road trips and back country drives! An e-Boxer Forester Hybrid will also be available soon.

OLD FIRM REUNITED RICKY MAY
By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
The path to the second Tuesday in November begins tonight for Ricky May, but just getting there, irrelevant of the result will be one of the most remarkable achievements in racing history. Much has been said and written about the tale of the humble Methven farmer, who just so happens to be one of the greatest of all time in his chosen field, and his brush with death at the Omakau Racecourse in January of this year. He collapsed and fell from the sulky. His heart officially stopped beating for no apparent reason, with doctors later diagnosing the event as hyperpothic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Doctors later confirmed that they believed he was dead for up to 10 minutes. He was saved by the swift action of those nearby, including drivers Ellie Barron and Lawrence McCormick who were first to his aid, and medical professionals who made their way onto the track from in the crowd. Tonight, the tale of many twists and turns takes another positive step though when he gets back into the cart in an official race for the first time with the horse whom he was driving when the story began. It’s not the first time he’s driven A G’s White Socks since that day in Central Otago; they’ve had a
M8
couple of spin arounds in workouts and trials in North Canterbury. But official races are a different beast to racing’s version of practice runs and the pressure is intensified considerably. And with the lure of the New Zealand Trotting Cup in November on the line, a race May knows better than most, there’s extra reason to be excited about the occasion. “He went super,” May said of his most recent trial. “He was phenomenal, he’s pretty ready. “Hopefully he’ll behave himself at the start and there’s no doodling.” Standing starts have been a bit of a bane in the life of the Greg and Nina Hope-trained pacer for the past few years, with mobile starts being more of his forte. It has gone some way to stopping the pacer from realising his full potential, but a huge Inter Dominion series earlier this year and a successful trip to Australia recaptured some of that early promise and there’s high hopes for a big season. Tonight won’t be easy, and there won’t be anyone lining up to make the return task easier because of sentiment. The pair take on a strong field in the Group Three Maurice Holmes Vase, including a plethora of All Stars runners from Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen’s base, including New Zealand Trotting Cup favourite, Self Assured.
Ricky May and A G’s White Socks will be hoping to get the winning feeling when they combine at Addington tonight for the first time since May’s health incident in January. dentally, he was on Terror To Love for the second two, taking over the reins from Curtin, who had won with him in 2011. So he’s overdue. And the work towards that magical date begins tonight. With an old mate in front of him, hoping to help him get there.
Seven wins is no mean feat though, but when you’re regarded as the Cups King, there’s a certain pressure to uphold. He had a golden run, from 2009 to 2013 where he won the race four times, bowing only to his good mate, Jimmy Curtin, in 2011. His first two in that run were Monkey King, and then inci-
The New Zealand Trotting Cup is the obvious goal for the season, and success there would not only be the perfect foil to A G’s White Socks showing his true worth, but would also mark a return to form in the great race for May, who while the most successful driver in its history, has had a lean run in recent years.

Tuning up for a big season
By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
A healthy spread of talent is expected for a tennis season dress-rehearsal next month. The Jack Tiller Tennis (JTT) Ashburton Classic tournament will be held in a fortnight as preparations begin for the impending tennis season. The event is designed to pro-

vide players with much needed matchplay before the start of interclub and school holiday tournaments. Mid Canterbury Tennis said that due to Covid there had been limited tournaments and opportunities for juniors. Head coach Jack Tiller said they were hoping to get a good number of entrants from Christchurch and the South Canterbury areas.
Awards nights getting a tweak Clubs are being forced to make adjustments to planned awards ceremonies due to Covid-19 restrictions. With the country outside of Auckland still in Alert Level 2 restrictions, club celebrations are being downgraded or pushed back, The Methven rugby club’s senior awards evening tomorrow is limited to players. management, committee members and invited guests due to the restrictions. “Thanks again for your understanding,” a Methven RFC spokesperson said. The Ashburton Celtic RFC’s Senior Prizegiving and Ball has been postponed altogether. The event was scheduled to be held on Saturday week. “A decision moving forward will be made after the PM’s announcement on September 6,” a club spokesperson said. Southern RFC confirmed a fortnight ago that a new date would be confirmed for its senior awards dinner.
Promising youngster Jack Parsons in action. “Some of the kids playing will be some of the top juniors in the country and hopefully we’ll get some adults in the open men’s and women’s grades,” he said. “It will be a cool atmosphere down here with little tackers and some of the old heads.” It is a big couple of weeks for local tennis. The rescheduled Mid Canter-
bury Senior Championships are set to be held next weekend. The two-day tournament was originally due to be played in March but had to be put on hold due to Covid-19. The JTT Ashburton Classic will be held at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on September 13, with a reserve day slated for the following Sunday.
OPINION
Pondering a legacy in the professional era By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
H
ow do you solve a problem like Messi? Argentine Lionel Messi is indisputably one of the greatest to play the game, but stands at a crossroads that will impact his legacy. He can remain at Barcelona and try to build on his impressive accolades at the club or he can move on to a new club and add new accolades to his storied career. Either way, there is a major blot on his legacy after the Spanish giants were embarrassed 2-8 by Bayern Munich as the Germans roared to Champions League glory. The result has meant there is heavy speculation that Messi
wants to move on from Barcelona. The defeat by Bayern ensured that Barcelona ended the season without winning any silverware for the first time since 2007/08. He has previously stated he wanted to finish his career at Barcelona and he is on a fair wage – if the reported $NZ1,133,793 a week is considered fair. But the recent humiliation has apparently been enough to have the little maestro searching for a new challenge and fresh surroundings. Or in professional football, the club with the biggest cheque book. If he leaves his last act at his Barcelona career, which stretches back to 2000, may forever be one of the club’s darkest days, even if he scores success
on greener pastures. Then again, if he stays, some will question if he would have been able to succeed outside in another league, like how he cops the blame for Argentina’s World Cup failings. His rival for top player status, Christiano Ronaldo, has a proven record in England, Spain, and Italy. Legacy is an interesting aspect in the modern world of professional sport. A contrast between loyalty and legitimacy. Some players are praised for loyalty and success at one club – think Cameron Smith at the Melbourne Storm (although rumours have him playing one last hurrah elsewhere if he isn’t ready to hang up the boots) or Darren Lockyer at the Brisbane Broncos – to use league
as an excellent segue. Then there is Sonny Bill Williams. He could be considered a pioneer, taking his athletic prowess to wherever he could find workfrom league to rugby and back, and back again, and around with boxing in between. A lot of the time he found success – see Bulldogs (2004) and Roosters (2013) NRL Premiership, All Black World Cup winner, Super rugby title at the Chiefs, and a 7-0 boxing record. His legacy is not one of loyalty, but legitimacy, as he showed he can succeed cross-codes and teams. In the modern era, the oneclub legends are in decline. Prospective and fringe All Blacks chase the big dollars – it is their job after all – rather than the jersey.
Some tough out it longer and in their twilight cash in. The likes of Dan Carter, making the most of the juice in the tank after a distinguished All Blacks career as opposed to Richie McCaw who pulled the pin in rugby only to prove his worth on the multisport scene, a gruelling choice but I bet it doesn’t take a toll on the body like his days of being the target at every ruck. And so we circle back to the problem with Messi. Does he stick it out and rebuild the empire he helped build, or cash in elsewhere while he still has the legs? Time will tell, but wherever he lands, it will need to come with enough success to buff out the recent Champions League dint and round off his incredible career.

AshHutt girls dominate squad By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
A strong section of the AshHutt 1st XV girls have been rewarded with representative selection. A total of 11 players from the combined Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College team have been selected for the Secondary School Girls Country squad named earlier this week. The group of 26 is also made up of players from the Waitaki Girls’/St Kevin’s and Geraldine teams who play in the secondary school under-18 competition. The Country team is set to face a Secondary Schools’ Town selection in Timaru on September 13. The Town squad is made up of players from Timaru Girls’ High School, Craighead and Roncalli teams. The AshHutt 1st XV were scheduled to play the 3rd and 4th place playoff of the Aoraki competition on Wednesday, however the game was scrapped. The final between Craighead and Timaru Girls’ High School was given the go ahead. The following AshHutt players were selected for the Country Squad: Forwards: Grace Bleach Steph Geeson Megan Hurley Emma Rollinson Gemma Taylor Madison Trusler-Clark Backs: Lani Brightwell Roi Makutu Lauren Taylor Naumai Terekia Neesha Thompson

Teen training with reps By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
A schoolboy player has received a call up to train with the Hammers ahead of next week’s Hanan Shield clash. Eighteen-year-old loose forward Michael Hennings has had two training runs with the senior Mid Canterbury team this week, despite a nagging knee injury earlier in the season. It follows his starring role at number 8 for the Mid Canterbury Combined 1st XV in the UC Championship. Although not named in the initial 46-man squad, the Mount Hutt College pupil said it had been a positive experience being in the team environment. “It was awesome being around those players, and they really welcomed me. “It was a good learning experience.” Hennings, who was recruited from his native Fiji to join Mid Canterbury Combined earlier this year, has been one of their key players when he has taken to the field. He missed more than a
month’s worth of action due to a knee sprain, before returning to help his side continue its gradual improvement across a gruelling UC Championship campaign. Head coach Shane Enright said that schoolboy rugby was now offering a legitimate path towards the topflight rugby levels. “Back in 2013 we had both Seta Koroitamana and Nete Caucau make the Heartland squad that year (straight out of school),” he said. Hammers halfback Tyler Blackburn was also coming off the bench for Mid Canterbury in 2016, a year after leaving Timaru Boys’ High School. “If you have the talent like Michael and you’ve had that stepping stone then I think you can perform at that level straight away.” Enright said he had been impressed with both the teen’s strength, game awareness mixed in with some Fijian magic throughout the season. Mid Canterbury faces South Canterbury in their Hanan Shield opener in Timaru next Saturday.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Thinking counts as effort, but nothing comes into being through thought alone. Action and work of any kind must be completed. The more air that’s moved, the more real a thing becomes. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Generosity is among your most attractive qualities. You’ll decide just how much would be appropriate to give, and then double it. It’s not a move for every day, but it makes you feel amazing right now. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Someone dreams of a future that includes you. There’s the you in a relationship, and then there’s a dreamyou, who bears a degree of resemblance. A relevant question: How close is the match? CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It’s one of those days when you’ll do what’s good for you even though you don’t feel like it. It’s the sort of discipline that makes decisions easier for you. Soon these things will require no discipline at all. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Giving love the same way as usual is nice. But people get desensitised to typical experiences. When you give more and differently, it’s like stretching the elastic of your heart to a greater capacity for love and joy. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You can be sweet, but too much sweetness is no fun. Sometimes, your playfulness can come out in swipes. Knowing how far to go with mischief is the essence of intimacy. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Your mind is tipping toward the profound today – steady, serious and sincere. That’s why you’d do well to clown around with another air sign for a few hours in the name of balance. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You’re an excellent student of life because of your curiosity. You are interested in more than just memorising what you need to know for life’s tests. Your longing for deep knowledge will be sated. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): A whole new level of adulthood kicks in with the realisation that others measure the world and themselves differently from you. Accepting this system is its own badge of maturity. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You know an excellent suggestion when you hear it. You’ll follow up and soon be onto an interesting project, one that seems to create its own momentum. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): The cats, dogs, insects... even the trees sense things beyond the human range. And what of the person standing next to you? You grow through trying to understand another perspective. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The action will not escalate on its own. The intention of one person makes all of the difference. If you know what you want, then that person should be you. Go on; give things a push.

Reserves making major strides
By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
The Mid Canterbury United Reserves can attack the football season with renewed vigour now the monkey is off their back. After a tough season in Mainland’s Canterbury Championship League reserves grade, the freshfaced team to their credit have not thrown in the towel. Now they have registered theirfirst win of the campaign, lifting the side off the foot of the ladder, the young team can continue their growth game by game without the added pressure of an elu-
sive competition victory. “We’ve been losing games by heavy margins all season,” coach Darren Cavill said. “I said (at the weekend) let’s just get this one win under our belt and we can avoid coming dead last.” United did just that on Saturday, clinching a 4-2 win over Parklands at the Ashburton Domain which moved the team off the bottom of the ladder. The victory came off the back of a four-goal blitz by Ben Sutton, who Cavill said had been an integral leader within the group. The squad had targeted the game as a potential opening to bank competition points.
