In October four new faces won themselves seats around the Ashburton District Council meeting table. Reporter Sue Newman talks to those new councillors about why they stood for council and what they hope to achieve this term.

odger Letham’s roots are firmly in the Ashburton District, four generations

deep. And when the district is the place your family has called home since 1862 there comes a time when you want to do your bit to ensure that district continues to thrive, Letham said. Putting himself up for election as an Ashburton District councillor has been on his agenda for years. His father was a member of the Ashburton County Council for 18 years and its chairman for several of those. Letham had it in mind to follow in his footsteps, but the farming crisis in the late 1980s put paid to that. His focus had to be on survival. Letham’s early years were typical of those of many farmers’ sons. “I did the typical Mid Canterbury farming family thing. Went to primary school at Lauriston, then to Timaru Boys’ High and then home to the farm and slowly worked my way towards buying it from my father in 1981.” With a load of debt on board, Letham expected life to be tough for a few years, but those years coincided with a period of high interest rates and, after battling for eight years, the Letham family became one of the many farming families forced to leave their farms. They arrived in town with a car, their clothes, a couple of suitcases and $45,000 to start a new life. “It’s no big deal today but it did take a bit of adjusting.” Moving to town meant finding a job was a priority and an offer from the late Colin McLeod to become part of his

real estate team was a godsend, Letham said. “I had to be head down and bum up. It took a long time to recover and today I feel, in terms of assets, I’m where I should have been when I was 45

or 50 and I’ll be 76 on Christmas Day. But I’ve got no complaints, I’ve got everything I want.” Thirty-one years later he’s still on the job and said he finally feels he’s in a position where he can devote time and energy to

the council. “It’s a real commitment and there’s no point in doing it if you can’t pull your weight.” Letham is doing plenty of reading, attending workshops and asking questions to ensure

he’s up to speed with everything likely to come across the council table. When it comes to debates, he’ll have his say and he won’t be a ‘yes’ man. “I may take some time to make up my mind, but once I do it needs to be a pretty strong argument for me to change it, but I will always keep an open mind – just not at both ends.” Letham said he had a district-wide approach to issues but said he was focused on ensuring the district’s infrastructure was sound. While there were many things that could be seen as attracting people to live in the district, if the fundamentals were right, people would come, he said. With the business of council moving into top gear in the new year, Letham said he’s currently feeling a bit like a child starting primary school. “I know where the headmaster’s office (chief executive Hamish Riach) is and the toilets, but that’s about it. In the short time I’ve been on council I’ve grown to respect Hamish very highly. “He’s the right person for the job.” And after years of putting off standing for council, he said he’s pleased to have finally made the commitment. “I didn’t think I’d go to my grave happy until I’d had a go and now I’m looking forward to the next three years.”

Hot rods ready to rock Methven By Heather Mackenzie

photographers@theguardian.co.nz

On Sunday Methven will once again play host to around 200 hot rods. Now into its sixth year, the show attracts cars from both ends of the island. Officially the event is for hot rods, however organiser Gerard McCloy said all classic cars and motorbikes are welcome. McCloy understands the passion people have for all kinds of cars. He used the once very popular Ford Escort Mark II as an example. “Funny how the cars that we grew up with are now classic cars.” “Bring your Ford Escort or Hillman Imp, your original 1920s Model T. All special interest cars are welcome.” One-hundred-and-fifty cars will be on display in the Blue Pub carpark and out the front, but they will not be the only ones for people to admire. This is this kind of show that encourages enthusiasts from all over the South Island to dust off their own hot rod or classic car and come for a visit. “Some of them will arrive as early as Christmas Day and stay until after New Year,” he said. The streets of Methven will also be filled with cars. “The area around the Mobil garage is quite often a show in itself.” As well as the Sunday display McCloy has teamed up with Ashburton’s Americars Rod and Custom Club to hold other activities over the weekend. Today around 50 hot rods will

times before heading to Trott’s Garden. McCloy and his wife Anne-Marie have always run the event as a fundraiser for local causes. In 2009, their first year, the pair handed over a cheque to KidzMethven for $6500 to go towards

the local skate park, due to open soon. The profits from the gate charge go to the Methven Fire Brigade. “They always help us set up, so for the last few years the gate takings have been donated to them.” McCloy said there is no entry

fee for those registering their cars. “We don’t believe charging the owners a fee to be in the show, as they are the show. We prefer to take money at the gate.” The show on Sunday 29th goes from 10am to 4pm. Check out facebook for more details.

Christmas, Boxing Day period quiet for firefighters By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton’s firefighters were able to get a good Christmas break in as they continue on track for another year of 400 callouts. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade had no call-outs on

Christmas Day or Boxing Day. They were called to a false alarm on Christmas Eve morning. “We haven’t turned a wheel, it is always a bit of a shot in the dark what is going to happen (over the festive break),” Chief Fire Officer Alan Burgess said.

“There is no real pattern to how it works, but it means the guys got a bit more time with family without being called away so that is a good thing.” Burgess said a number of firefighters had headed away on holiday, but there would still be enough around ready to respond

to any emergencies. In 2018 the Ashburton brigade responded to 405 call-outs, a figure Burgess expects them to be around once again in 2019. “We are sitting at about 390 at the moment so it’ll be very similar to last year,” he said. “There are still a few days to go

so it’ll probably get close to 400, but you never can tell, hopefully it doesn’t.” 2018 saw a significantly less amount of call-outs than in 2017, which hit 465, but that dip can likely be explained by the lack of things like weather events, Burgess said at the time.

The ‘naughty’ principal J

ack Saxon remembers being kicked out of class many a time when he was at Nelson College. He ended up in a behaviourally-streamed class, and, while bright, was an under-achiever. “I was a bit of an ADHDer,” he admits. With many a learning difficulty represented among his friends and classmates, most of them had left school by the time they were 16. Jack stuck at it, however, having been influenced by three events all within 12 months of each other. The first was the gift of a book from his mother in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. “I can remember truanting school and reading this book. I couldn’t show that to my friends, because they would have taken the mickey out of me,” he said. The second thing was excelling at a creative writing assignment, the topic being saving someone in a fire. His teacher happened to be a rugby man and one that he liked and he did not want to let him down. The effort he put in paid off and the story was a hit at the school, being read out loud in class and assembly. The third thing was meeting a girl who liked to study. It seemed that the world of academia was not so bad after all and Saxon was all of a sudden on a path involving tertiary education. After school he went to the University of Canterbury to undertake a law degree and Bachelor of Arts. His interest in law had been borne out of a passion for arguing a point and also wanting to prove some people wrong who had told him he wouldn’t be smart enough. But as he got towards the end of his degree, he began to have a crisis of confidence and wondered whether law would be the right career. He remembered just how education had turned his life around and how much he had been inspired by all of its possibilities. He also remembered a sense of unfairness he had felt at seeing

some struggle with learning difficulties, or failing to get ahead because they belonged to groups traditionally marginalised from the education system. “My passion for education and that it’s successful for everybody was probably borne out of that,” he said. As that passion once again stirred within him, he decided that upon completion of university he would head off to teachers’ college. His first teaching job was at Nelson College, the same school just a few years ago he had attended as a student. It was not long enough for some teachers to

forget just what sort of student he had been. “When you are a student who is a bit of a ratbag and now you are having to form relationships with people who were your teachers but are now your peers, I found that quite challenging,” Saxon said. After three years, he and wife Kirsty wanted to accelerate their personal growth and work overseas. They headed to Syria, where for one year they taught children of the country’s dictators and other elite. They then travelled in Jordan for a year. Upon their return, Saxon took a position as a teacher at Queen

Charlotte College, where he climbed the ladder into middle and senior leadership roles. He then sent off his first ever principalship application, for a position at Kaitaia College, and was successful. He and Kirsty, who are parents of three children, settled at Ahipara on Ninety Mile Beach, becoming loved and respected members of the school and wider community. After five years, they felt home calling and wanted to come back to the mainland to be closer to family. They did not expect to move so quickly, but it just so happened that the Mount Hutt College

vacancy came up. Saxon applied, and was the successful candidate from about 15. “I felt really privileged to be able to come and enjoy this community, what a beautiful space this is,” he said. Saxon said he wanted to see the college continue to grow into its own vision and students to become strengthened in their own voice. He said he saw himself as a kaitiakitanga, that is a guardian or steward. “My job is to guide the direction of the school to meet the aspirations of the wider community.”

Murder on a

Mt Hutt Station resident Robyn Hood has been delving deep into a tale of greed, betrayal and murder, which unfolded on her property 52 years ago. Susan Sandys reports.

R

obert Richards had in recent years become scared of his brother. In 1967, at the age of 35, the intellectually-impaired son of the late Leslie and Dorothy Richards was living on Mt Hutt Station, as he had his whole life. His parents had farmed the station and by this time had passed away. But he had someone to look after him – an old family friend named Alma Smith, who was also his housekeeper. The pair lived in a new cottage on the property. Robert had previously lived there with his mother; Smith moved in once Dorothy passed away in 1965. Robert was known as simple and kind, and was well liked by

neighbours and townsfolk in nearby Methven. Due to his disability, his affairs were managed by the Public Trust. His older brother Bruce, 38, had fallen out with their mother before she died and had his own property, at Mitcham. Bruce was an admired and successful farmer, married to wife Elaine, with five children. But underneath that façade of respectability, was a seething resentment toward Robert, and a sense of entitlement, in wanting to have Mt Hutt Station all to himself. That was the contention of the prosecution at his trial, which took place following Robert being murdered in his home that year, on a moonlit November night. Kathleen Lewis, neighbour to Robert and wife of the manager of the station, Ted Lewis, recounted as a trial witness that Robert had been frightened of his older sibling. “Several times if he saw Bruce around, he would say to me ‘Save me from him, he will either put me away or kill me’.” “I used to say to him that Bruce would not hurt him,” Lewis said. Robert, she said, had been like a son to her and had been happy recently that Bruce had spoken to him. Usually, she never saw the two brothers together. “Robert appeared to be very happy about this, it seems that the barrier between them might have been starting to break down,” she said. And he had been even happier as he looked into his future with management of the farm soon to be divided with Bruce, and he did not mind if Bruce had first pick. This was following the brothers working out an arrangement for the property to be partiROBYN HOOD

tioned with each brother looking after his own half. And Bruce planned to lease Robert’s half so he could have the whole estate under his care. “He (Robert) told me on the afternoon before he died that he was the luckiest man in the world, as he had everything he wanted,” Lewis told the court. Her account of the relationship between the two brothers is among fascinating information retrieved from the depths of newspaper archives by Mt Hutt Station resident Robyn Hood. Hood said her interest was sparked in the case through hearing many locals talk about it. Today she lives with her husband and children in a modern house where the former Mt Hutt Station homestead once was, where Lewis lived. Hood was familiar with the former building, having worked there as a waitress when it was the Homestead Restaurant in the 1990s. Her research journey took her to the Ashburton Library archives, where she delved into old Ashburton Guardian publications on microfilm. It also took her to cemeteries. She has found the grave of Robert, buried at Methven Cemetery, and has found that Bruce, who died in 2015, is buried alongside wife Elaine, at the Prebbleton Anglican Church cemetery. The headstone features their photos and describes them as a loved mother and father and treasured grandparents. In 2017, Mt Hutt Station had a visit from resthome clients in Christchurch, and one of the residents, Bill Worthington, was able to give Robyn’s father-in-law some notes about his memories of the court case. “He happened to be working here following the murder taking place, so it was great to get his first-hand perspective,” she said.

From P7 Worthington was farm supervisor, appointed by the Trustees Executors and Agency of New Zealand Limited which became administrators of the estate after the murder. Worthington’s notes show an aspect of the trial which fascinated many locals at the time, that of Bruce successfully entering a plea of not guilty on the grounds of insanity. His barrister, noted Christchurch QC Austin Young, had psychiatrists testify and seemingly convince the jury that his client had been influenced by a television show, called The Invaders, involving aliens brainwashing people to commit horrendous crimes. “TV had just reached New Zealand and Austin Young made sure the jury understood that Bruce was one of the few people who could afford a TV set,” Worthington recounted. It was a full moon the night Robert was murdered and Young made much of the fact that the aliens in the television show had come to earth during a full moon. An eerie and ominous effect of the light from the moon was mentioned in other court testimony, in relation to the defence of insanity. Dr Thomas Edwin Hall, who was superintendent of the Sunnyside mental hospital and a qualified psychiatrist, was called by the Crown to give evidence on the accused’s mental condition. He had interviewed the accused, who had told him that when he woke up on the night of the murder it was not quite dark. “He said he had a vision of driving up to Mt Hutt in a car in the moonlight. The mountain was silhouetted in the moonlight as he drove and he said he felt to be high and large above the steering wheel of the car. He said he had a feeling that he just had to go up there.” Bruce’s sentence was to be committed to Sunnyside and other mental institutions for nine years. He was released after seven years for good behaviour. Hood said her research, and reading of the court reports she had found, painted a picture of Bruce as a greedy man. Before his mother died, he visited her in hospital and demanded she sign a new will stating the estate would pass in its entirety to him. However, by this time Dorothy had had enough of her son’s entitled attitude and obsession with the station, and after her death it was discovered she in fact had signed a new will where Bruce would receive nothing. Robert on the other hand was left a life interest in the house, the income from the remainder of her estate and a car. The remainder was left to Bruce’s children, who would benefit upon his death. Hood drives past the place where Robert’s cottage was every time she goes along her driveway. It was located near the property’s entrance, off Route 72, about 200 metres from her home. “There were remaining foundations of the house up until last year when the land was cleared of overgrown trees,” she said. Hood said when she first came upon Robert’s grave at the Methven Cemetery it was covered in moss and looked derelict. “I found this so sad and spent a morning removing the moss, giving his gravestone a good clean and leaving some flowers there,” she said. “I always check on his grave when I visit my family’s plots at the Methven Cemetery.”

THE

murder trial AND

O

n the evening of November 7, 1967, Robert Richards and his housekeeper Miss Alma Smith were at home on Mt Hutt Station. Miss Smith had a couple of visitors that night and they left around 10pm. Robert retired to bed and Smith soon after, although she listened to the radio in her room until 11.25pm. She was awoken at 1.20am when she heard a noise that sounded like a can falling to the floor in the toilet. She lay in bed thinking about the noise for some time and then decided to go and

see if she could find out what it was. She got out of bed and was surprised to see a bright flash of light on the wall by her bedroom door. It seemed to be coming from inside the house, and she felt something was not right. She peered around her slightly open bedroom door and when she did so, could smell diesel oil. She realised it was familiar, similar to what she noticed when she went to bed earlier, but much stronger. It seemed the light was from a torch that someone was shining at the power switchboard at the far end of the hallway. Suddenly the light swung round and shone towards her and she stood frozen

in fear. A man came at her shining the torch directly in her face. The man shook his hands at her and made a funny noise, something like “viv viv viv”, very fast and several times. It was a most unusual noise that she had never heard made by any human before. Robert used to make strange and incoherent noises when he was younger, but had ceased doing this many years before. It was as if the man in front of her was trying to pretend to be Robert, but she didn’t think it was him. The man kept coming towards her so she jumped back into her room and slammed the door and snibbed the inside lock. She called out to Robert to ask if he had been out of bed and he said he had not.

She told him that there must be somebody in the house and she soon heard fighting and scuffling. It sounded as if it were in Robert’s bedroom. After a while Smith heard Robert call out – “Alma, Alma! It’s him, it’s him!”. It was not very clear and sounded as if something had been placed over his mouth. She called out to Robert again, asking if the intruder was still there. Robert said “Yes”, and then the fighting started again. Smith found the light in her room did not work and put her slippers and cardigan on and climbed out of her bedroom window, running about 200 metres up the tree-lined driveway to the station manager Ted Lewis’ house.

Lewis and members of his family rushed to the cottage armed with shotguns and rifles. But upon their arrival the house was engulfed in flames and they were beaten back by smoke. Emergency services were alerted. In addition, phone calls were made to Robert’s brother, Bruce, at his home in Mitcham, to let him know of the predicament his brother was in, but mysteriously there was no answer. A policeman drove to Bruce’s residence and woke him up, whereupon he drove there quickly and was observed helping with the firefighting effort. By that time the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade had arrived. Constable Jackaways broke the

window of Robert’s bedroom and found it empty. Soon after a fireman found his body in the hall. He was found to have head injuries and police immediately declared the death a homicide. Bruce was questioned about cuts to his face in following days. He said it had been caused by falling in the pump house at his farm on the evening before the murder. On November 14, he and Elaine put a message of appreciation in the Ashburton Guardian, thanking the brigade, farm manager and neighbours for “the wonderful assistance and many gestures of kindness extended to us in the last few days”. Bruce may have had some fooled as he ostensibly grieved

for his brother, but not detectives, who were all the while gathering evidence. Officer in charge of the investigation Bob Meikle talked to Smith, who informed him there had been bad feelings between the brothers, and that Robert would always refer to his brother as “he” or “him” and not by name. Meikle recounted that Robert’s panicked cry of “It’s him” as he was attacked, pointed to Bruce as the murderer. Other evidence kept piling up, including a torch and accelerant container left at the scene being proved as belonging to Bruce. By November 20, Bruce had been charged with murdering his brother. The evidence at trial showed

Bruce had left his farm at Mitcham on the night of the murder, to drive to Mt Hutt Station. He cut the heating unit lines into his brother’s house so the fuel would accelerate the fire he planned to light. He broke in, but was interrupted when Smith heard him moving around the home. After killing his brother and setting fire to the house, he quickly drove back home and got into bed. He later claimed the reason he did not answer his phone at home was due to it being faulty. Robert’s cause of death was found to mainly be eight blows to the head, but he also suffered burns and asphyxia due to the fire. The trial in 1968 was one of the longest murder trials in

Christchurch of recent years and lasted 10 days. A total of 46 witnesses was heard, and more than 60 exhibits were produced. Interest was high, and at the sentencing people had to be turned away from the public gallery. Bruce Lawrence Richards, a 39 year old farmer of Mitcham Road, was found not guilty of murdering his brother on the grounds that, at the time of killing him, he was insane. Compiled from a summary of Ashburton Guardian court reports and clippings retrieved from archives by Robyn Hood, as well as the book New Zealand Detectives by John Lockyer.

Until moving into the new building at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds earlier this year the club did not have a meeting room, so when the new building was being designed the group made sure to include one, with a kitchen. Past club president John Hall said the group was growing in popularity. “In the beginning about eight people would attend, now there is normally around 14.” Hall said some come every week and others turn up when they can. “Everything gets discussed here,” he said. “Tractors, farming, council and politics, there is not much that we don’t cover at one time or another. Everybody has had different experiences with machinery so there is always something to chat about.” As with most groups of its kind, on the surface it’s a collection of like-minded people with a common interest getting together. However, it often serves a deeper purpose. This cuppa and chat can drive away loneliness and isolation. It’s something to look forward to each week, providing regular social contact, he said. New to the group is 87-year-old

former Hinds farmer Jan Yeatman. Struggling with the recent loss of his wife, a family member suggested he might like to go along one Tuesday and have a look. Relishing the chance to talk tractors for an hour or so, he didn’t hesitate to pop in. Yeatman’s eyes misted over as he spoke of his wife: “Oh I miss her,” he said. After a pause and a deep breath, his smile returned and he began telling stories of his childhood. One of Yeatman’s fondest memories was of seeing an electric tractor working in Willowby. “I would have been about 13 or 14 years old at the time. Each day

I would see it from the school bus window. “It must have been running on 240 volts from a power pole in the paddock. I can still remember the power cable running across the paddock.” The tractors where the brainchild of Mid Canterbury local Herbert George Kemp. Seven of them were built in Ashburton between 1932 and 1937. Yeatman’s love of tractors goes back to his childhood in Ashburton. “My dad owned an International machinery business in town, selling tractors and headers to local farmers.” When a farmer purchased a tractor his dad would take it for a test drive before delivering it.

“The test drive usually meant him driving it home to Cameron Street at lunchtime. I would sit on his knee and steer it.” In the early '40s his father sold the dealership and purchased a farm at Coldstream. “It was the duck’s-guts when we moved to the farm. Dad went farming, I did the same and my children are involved with farming too – we have it in our blood.” Graeme Neale has been a Vintage Machinery Club member for a number of years. After the death of his wife, Neale moved from Balclutha to be closer to his daughter. His claim to fame was having the first ever hydraulic excavator in South Otago.

“I bought it in 1980. It was a Poclain, which is French. Bridge brothers had them at the time, so I bought it and trucked it back home. “When I moved here I had to leave my machinery behind. I did bring a little Case tractor with me. That is now out at Darfield as I didn’t have any room for it when I moved house.” Neale gets a lot out of the club. “I have belonged to lots of clubs in my life, this is the best one. Everyone here is really friendly and easy to get on with.” He particularly loves the bus trips. “They are really well organised.” On November 20 the club visited the Greendale area. The group of 45 had a busy and varied day, visiting Meadow Mushrooms compost plant, various farms around the area housing vintage machinery and even managed to fit in a beer and a steak at the West Melton Tavern. Clubs such as this not only house and protect vintage machinery, they preserve memories as well. With over 100 members the future looks positive for machine and memory alike.

The hottest spot in the ocean NZME It’s the summer marine heatwave attracting huge attention – a massive blob of hot water off the eastern coast of New Zealand. Right now the southern reaches of the Pacific Ocean is one of the warmest sea spots on the planet with temperatures of up to 20°C appearing as a bright red blob on satellite images. Professor James Renwick, a weather and climate researcher at Victoria University, has a simple explanation for the phenomenon: “It’s just a patch of water that’s had a lot of sunny skies and not much wind”. In fact, a very big patch of water measuring tens of thousands of square kilometres where the water is 4°C above the average temperature of 10°C to 15°C on a similar latitude to Wellington in the Pacific Ocean. The central hot spot is about the size of the North Island (114,000sq km) or the South Island (150,000sq km). The wider area is larger than both islands combined. “Sea temperatures don’t actually vary too much and a degree, plus or minus, is quite a big deal and this area is probably four degrees or more than that above average and that’s pretty huge. “Right in the centre of the “blob” it’s likely to be more than six degrees warmer than average. “It’s extremely warm water in terms of differences from average, it’s got to be one of the warmest spots on the planet at the moment,” said Renwick. At 20°C, the blob in the southern Pacific is getting up there with temperatures in the Tropics that start in the 20s and reach 30°C.

In brief $1.2m in property held Police have restrained more than $1.2 million worth of property after an operation targeting the manufacture and supply of methamphetamine in Northland. Nine people were arrested in July during a four-day police operation, code-named Operation Nortiate. As part of the operation, more than 150 police staff raided nine properties throughout Northland, including in Wheki Valley, Hukerenui, Helena Bay, Raumanga and Puwera. This month two of those properties in Wheki Valley, where firearms and drugs were found, were restrained by High Court orders under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act, police said yesterday. - NZME

Burnt pub targeted The patch, or blob, of hot water is a bit too far off the New Zealand coast for Kiwis to feel its benefits, but it is “extremely warm”, experts say. The coldest seas are in Antarctica and the Arctic Ocean where water freezes at -2°C because of salt content. Renwick said the waters out to the east of the country had been experiencing “quite high pressures, sunny skies, light winds, so the surface of the ocean would warm up quite quickly”. “But if the winds are strong then it gets all stirred up. “If it’s not being stirred enough, the warming from the sun and so on will just be absorbed at the surface of the ocean where you get this quite thin layer of very warm water,

so what I’m wondering is, how deep is this very warm blob?” Renwick said it was likely the shallow layer of warm water, possibly up to 50m below the surface, would likely fade and then dissipate as it heads towards South America. This will happen as the wind picks up and the layer of warm water mixes with cooler water over the next few weeks. Renwick said the blob was not a sign of global warming, just what happens in the ocean. A similar blob occurred at the Bering Sea in September.

Pub workers are calling out “scum” who stole $10,000 worth of alcoholic drinks from a burnt down Canterbury pub. The historic Kirwee Tavern which was destroyed in a Christmas Eve fire has now been targeted by robbers who took all undamaged alcohol. In a social media post made by Kirwee Tavern yesterday, officials said police wanted to speak to anyone who had seen or heard something between 6pm on Thursday and 9.30am on Friday. “To the person/people who risked their lives last night to loot the chiller you are scum!” - NZME

Boxing Day spend overshadowed NZME

around $300m - in line with the $297.5m spent on December 20. At its peak, Paymark was processing around 679,000 transaction an hour. Over the six weeks leading up to Christmas Day, spending totalled $8.8 billion, an increase of 4.6 per cent compared to the same period last year. Retail NZ chief executive Greg Harford said some Boxing Day retail spend had migrated into Black Friday, though he did not

on NZX. The scheme will be subject to the usual conditions, it said. The trading halt will stay in place until midday on Monday or when Metlifecare makes an announcement. Metlifecare also has $100 million of listed debt. When rejecting the initial offer last week, the board said it had received two other expressions of interest from rival buyers and that its internal valuations indicated a price in excess of $8 a share, depending on the assumptions used.

No plans to enter cannabis market NZME Coca-Cola Co. is dousing speculation that it’s getting into the cannabis business. Speculation surged after a video posted to YouTube – since deleted – by a user with the screen name Gabor the Blind Guy showed a Coca-Cola can with a childproof lid. The man in the video says that his father is a head engineer for a company that “produces bottling and capping machines for many major pharmaceutical and food companies”. He then says that Coca-Cola is planning on debuting a new line of its classic drink in Canada that will feature CBD extract, the non-psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that treats pain but doesn’t get you high. “These rumours are untrue,” Coca-Cola said in an emailed

statement to Bloomberg News. “As we have stated many times, we have no plans to enter the CBD market.” A saved copy of the video was posted on Reddit Inc.’s WallStreetBets forum. Coca-Cola said in 2018 that it was looking at the cannabis drinks market. The news fuelled stock gains for companies like Au-

rora Cannabis Inc. The Atlanta-based soft drinks maker was in talks with Canadian marijuana producer Aurora Cannabis to develop the beverages, according to a report at the time from BNN Bloomberg Television. Aurora did not respond to inquiries from Bloomberg News yesterday about a possible partnership with Coca-Cola.

Metlifecare’s mystery buyer has completed due diligence for its $1.49 billion takeover bid but needs this weekend to get final approval for the deal. The retirement village operator’s board completed negotiations for a scheme implementation agreement – which needs a lower level of support than a formal takeover to get across the line – at $7 a share. That’s up from the initial $6.50 offer that was rejected by Metlif-

ecare’s major shareholders and a small premium to company’s $6.96 a share net tangible asset value. The shares last traded at $6.38 and have jumped from $5.08 before the unsolicited suitor emerged in November. The would-be buyer’s final approval process is due over the weekend, after which the scheme will be signed off. Until then, there is no assurance the negotiated deal will proceed and trading in the shares remains halted, investors were told through a statement

Day down 7.6 per cent on last year. Sport equipment retailers and hardware stores reported increases of more than 5 per cent. No official figures have been released on how much was spent on Christmas Eve, but Paymark estimates this would be

New Zealanders spent just shy of $150 million on Boxing Day, well behind the $253m spent on Black Friday last month, though an increase on last year’s total. Figures from Paymark, which processes 75 per cent of the country’s electronic card transactions, show $149.8m went through its network on Thursday, up almost 4 per cent on the total spent on Boxing Day last year. Last year, $139.5m was spent on Boxing Day through 2.5 million transactions. While there was an increase in spending on Boxing Day this year, retail commentators seem to be right about Boxing Day having lost some of its appeal for shoppers. On American flash sales shopping day Black Friday, on November 29, Kiwis spent $253m. Including the Saturday and Sunday that followed, a total of $652m was spent. Paymark noted that Black Friday kicked off the official Christmas spending period, and that Black Friday had proven to be the busier day for spending over the more traditional spending drawcard of Boxing Day. Spending at supermarkets and liquor stores was up on Boxing Day last year, along with spending at cafes and restaurants. The spend at liquor retailers increased the most this year, up over 14 per cent. For some retailers, including clothing and footwear retailers, spending on Boxing

believe the day after Christmas had lost its shine with shoppers. “My sense is that Black Friday and Boxing Day are going to slug it out for a little while as they each compete to win the most sales,” Harford said. “A lot of that Boxing Day spend is driven by people who perhaps got given gift vouchers for Christmas, and so they are keen to get out and spend while there are deals on. “Fashions in retail and sales periods come and go. Twenty, thirty years ago we didn’t have Boxing Day sales at all, they have come into their own in the last decade, and what we’re seeing now is Black Friday emerging as a strong competitor to that, but I don’t think we’re going to see Boxing Day sales disappear anytime soon.” Boxing Day sales remained “hugely popular” with New Zealand shoppers, he said. Harford said he expected the volume of Boxing Day shopping conducted online to have increased significantly this year. “We’re seeing more and more customers do Boxing Day shopping online. “Online shopping has increased eight times faster than in-store shopping over the last year and my guess is there would have been a lot of shoppers that would have been making use of the ability to buy online and not head into the shops while they may well have been sitting on the beach and making their purchases on their phones.”

Christmas lunch a truly special occasion O

n Christmas Day I had the pleasure of spending a little time at the Community Christmas Lunch at the Tinwald Hall where more than 140 people came to enjoy the festivities of Christmas together in what is fast becoming a special event on the district calendar. The numbers were about the same as what they have been in recent years, but the passion and care put in by the team that brings it all together each year continues to grow and grow as the years go by. Not many of us probably think about spending Christmas Day alone, but for many that’s just the way it is and without a service like the community lunch,

things would be even more lonesome. But thanks to the kind generosity of a number of people from within our district there is an opportunity for people who find themselves at a loose end to come along, be treated like kings and spend the day with people who are in a similar boat. I’ve been to the last three lunches, and each year I’ve

walked away thinking how great it is that there are people out there who are willing to give up such a special day each year to ensure that it is just as special for a whole heap of other people. Their selflessness and dedication to the day is what makes it so special. Whether it’s the ever-organised Ann Allott and her team of organisers who ensure that everything runs like clockwork or Dan Lysaght ensuring that the many variations of food on offer are cooked to perfection and that there is something there for everyone, or the many volunteers who rock up to serve food, wait on tables or play host to the guests – each is as impor-

tant as the other. What was really encouraging this year though was to hear of the new people coming on board to lend a helping hand and equally as important, the youngsters who came along with family members and played a part as well. Ensuring that Christmas isn’t just about presents, but giving young minds the opportunity to understand that nothing should be taken for granted during the festive season is a vitally important lesson and each of those youngsters there on Wednesday will have walked away with a new sense of meaning behind the entire occasion. So, let’s ensure that this wonderful event continues from

year-to-year and the support that it receives from the community through goodwill and time, products, services and everything else remains in place. The joy and happiness on the faces of those who made their way through the doors to enjoy the festivities on offer was all the reward I’m sure anyone would have needed to make it all the worthwhile. This time of the year is special and it’s only special because of the goodness of people out there in the community who ensure that everyone is catered for during every occasion. They’re all really important people and people we should consider ourselves lucky to have in our community.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Saturday, December 28, the 362nd day of 2019. There are three days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On December 28, 1945, Congress officially recognised the Pledge of Allegiance. On this date: In 1612, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei observed the planet Neptune, but mistook it for a star. (Neptune wasn’t officially discovered until 1846 by Johann Gottfried Galle.) In 1832, John C. Calhoun became the first vice president of the United States to resign, stepping down because of differences with President Andrew Jackson. In 1879, a section of the Tay Bridge in Dundee, Scotland, collapsed as a train was travelling over it, sending an estimated 75 people to their deaths in the river below. In 1895, the Lumiere brothers, Auguste and Louis, held the first public showing of their movies in Paris. In 1908, a major earthquake followed by a tsunami devastated the Italian city of Messina, killing at least 70,000 people. In 1929, New Zealand military police fired on Mau independence demonstrators in Apia, killing 11 Samoans, including the independence leader Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III. In 1961, the Tennessee Williams play Night of the Iguana opened on Broadway. In 1972, Kim Il Sung, the premier of North Korea, was named the country’s president under a new constitution.

In 1981, Elizabeth Jordan Carr, the first American “test-tube” baby, was born in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1987, the bodies of 14 relatives of Ronald Gene Simmons were found at his home near Dover, Arkansas, after Simmons shot and killed two other people in Russellville. (Simmons, who never explained his motives, was executed in 1990.) In 2001, the National Guard was called out to help Buffalo, New York, dig out from a paralyzing, 5-day storm that had unloaded over 2 metres of snow. In 2007, Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was laid to rest as

the country’s army tried to quell a frenzy of rioting in the wake of her assassination. Ten years ago: Al-Qaida in Yemen claimed responsibility for a Christmas Day attempt to blow up a US-bound airliner. A bomb blast killed at least 44 people in a Shiite procession in the southern Pakistan city of Karachi. In Argentina, two men turned away from Buenos Aires were wed in Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city, in Latin America’s first same-sex marriage. Heatwave about to hit If you’re planning a trip to see in the new year you might want to reconsider your plans due to an “extreme” heatwave that’s building across southeast Australia in the coming days, authorities have warned. The heatwave is already heating up parts of South Australia – where a number of cities hit 40C or higher yesterday. Sydney is also beginning to heat up, with the mercury hitting 28C and the top temperature steadily increasing to 31C on Monday and 35C on Tuesday. New Year’s Eve is being tipped as the real danger day for bushfires, as temperatures are due to soar to 43C in the city’s west. Victoria will also cop hot, dry and windy conditions. In the state’s east, three fires are currently burning and it’s feared they could expand over the coming days. Authorities are urging those travelling to regions affected by bushfires to reconsider their plans. “Given the conditions we’ll see over the next few days, it’s probably not a good idea to be in the parks or forests camping,” Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp told reporters. “If you’ve not already travelled, I would suggest that you rethink your plans over the next few days.” Monday and Tuesday are tipped to be the worst days for bushfires and smoke haze, just as we’re welcoming in the new year. Sky News Meteorologist Rob Sharpe said the extreme heatwave is currently lingering over northwestern parts of the country, where the mercury is break-

There’s no escaping the heatwave about to hit Australia. ing 45C. “As we move through the week though, that heat is going to build through southern parts of Australia,” he said. “Initially, winds are not going to be that strong so we’re going to see a few regions with severe fire danger on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. “It’s not going to be that dangerous, but it really ramps up at the end of heatwave on Monday.” He said that, on Monday, strong winds will “suddenly” pick up and severe heat will hit Victoria, South Australia, NSW and even Tasmania. Temperatures are set to hit the 40s on the mainland and the mid-30s in Tasmania. Mr Sharpe said “dangerous” fire conditions are expected to

peak on that day and it’s likely there will be smoke haze in Sydney on New Year’s Eve. Two firefighters were killed and as many as 100 houses destroyed when bushfires ripped through NSW on Thursday and Saturday last week. More than 1700 firefighters were in the field on Christmas Day, slogging away to strengthen containment lines before the dangerous weather arrives. Firefighters have used milder conditions in recent days to strengthen containment lines. Fire danger ratings are very high for the ACT, the greater Hunter, the central and southern ranges, the northern and southern slopes and northwestern NSW. There is a high fire danger

rating from the far South Coast up to Sydney, with a low-moderate danger rating in western parts of the state. In South Australia, firefighters are working tirelessly to control the 25,000-hectare blaze burning in Adelaide Hills before temperatures rise to about 40C today. A heatwave bringing severe to extreme conditions started moving towards the Australian east coast yesterday, affecting the northern parts of the state. Adelaide will be untouched by the heatwave with maximum temperatures forecast at 33C. The fires have destroyed 84 homes and hundreds of other buildings as well as claiming one life.

Massive rise in processed meat recalls Bits of metal, hard plastic, rubber and even glass are increasingly getting mixed and baked into processed meat products reaching consumers, triggering a record number of safety recalls, a Washington Post analysis of federal records shows. So far this year, the Agriculture Department in the United States has announced 34 recalls involving 17 million pounds of meat products after stray materials were found in them. That’s a sharp increase from a decade ago, in 2009, when there were five such recalls involving about 1 million pounds of processed meat. Metal parts are breaking off machines that mix, chop and puree ingredients. Plant workers’ rubber gloves are falling into the meat mixes. And bits of plastic and glass

from meat packaging and ingredient containers are getting ground into the food. The makers of some of the most beloved and recognisable ready-made food staples have issued the recalls, including Tyson Foods chicken tenders, Jimmy Dean sausages and Spam. The stray items, which the USDA calls “foreign objects,” typically are found after a consumer bites into a meat product, records show, sometimes chipping teeth in the process. The objects can cause choking and can injure the intestinal tract. “There is this initial shock when you find something that clearly does not belong, such as a screw or shrapnel or packing material,” said Robert Rausch, a New York food safety lawyer. “It’s shock; it’s disgust. The

concern always is whether there were other pieces that you swallowed. “It’s like the old joke: What is worse than finding a worm in your apple? It’s finding a half a worm.” A number of changes are causing the recalls to rise, according to USDA and industry experts. Manufacturers are revving up processing line speeds to increase production, sometimes using old equipment that breaks down under the added strain. Consumers are taking their complaints public, naming the companies on social media, often including photos of the contaminated food. And USDA reporting requirements for the contamination, in response to a congressional mandate, became more stringent in 2012. The USDA acknowledges

that consumer complaints about the contamination are on the rise. It issued guidelines in March to food manufacturers to get them to respond more quickly to reported problems, saying companies sometimes issued recalls only after “multiple customer complaints.” Two months after the guidelines were issued, Tyson Foods announced what is said to be the largest US processed meat recall ever for foreign matter contamination – metal shavings may have ended up in as much as 12 million pounds of chicken strips. The recall was expanded once – adding nearly 11.8 million pounds of chicken strips to the original recall of 69,093 pounds – and involved six consumer complaints, three with “oral injuries,” records show.

Swift missed on big role Taylor Swift nearly landed a role in the 2012 film Les Miserables. Director Tom Hooper explained in a new interview that while Swift “rather brilliantly auditioned” for a role in the adaptation, he ultimately passed on casting the superstar. “I didn’t cast her, but I got very close to it. Ultimately, I couldn’t quite believe Taylor Swift was a girl people would overlook,” Hooper told Vulture. “So it didn’t quite feel right for her for the most flattering reason.” The role went to actress Samantha Barks instead. Swift would get her big chance seven years later in Cats.

Daniels a slow starter Anthony Daniels went through a painful experience after not receiving the same amount of public recognition as other co-stars when the first Star Wars film was released in 1977. But in time, Daniels’ C-3PO character became one of the most popular in the franchise and he’s the only cast member to have appeared in all nine of the main Star Wars films. The British actor plays the soft-spoken “protocol droid” built by young Anakin Skywalker that is fluent in six million languages. C-3PO’s witty exchanges with fellow droid R2-D2 often served as comic relief, making the tandem fan favourites.

HOLIDAY CLASSIC

One of Mid Canterbury’s greatest bowling prizes goes on the line this weekend when the Cotula Classic begins at the Ashburton Bowling Club. The highly competitive tournament, held each year, will see 16 teams of four competing over two days of play in a slightly different format of play than the normal tournaments around the district. Teams play three rounds each day consisting of a game of fours, a game of triples and singles and two games of pairs, with players playing in six games each across the course of the weekend. Play begins today at the Ashburton

Bowling Club with a round of fours, before teams split up to compete in matches of singles and triples before a game of pairs this afternoon. Then on Sunday morning it’s games of pairs before singles and triples and then fours to round out the weekend. This year’s fields consists of some strong combinations, including a number of local faces as well as some from outside of the Mid Canterbury region. Teams from Timaru Town and Country, Bowls Hornby, Beckenham and Riccarton Racecourse will be joined by local sides from Allenton, Ashburton, MSA, Hampstead and Methven. mary Bennett, Graeme Bishop, Gavin Eder, Roger Gutbertlet, Tony Inwood, Sandra Keith, Len Luke, Reg McGarry, Brent Mayson, Lynton Muir, Doug Thorne and Wendy Watson. Meanwhile, a permanent fixture on the Mid Canterbury bowling scene finished up for the 2019 season last week when the final Friday triples of the year was held at Allenton. A rescheduled day from earlier in the season, a full green of players took to the Allenton turf for the afternoon to compete.

At the end of the competition it was the Eric Maw-skipped side from Methven who emerged on top. Maw was joined on the greens by Anthony Holmes and Graham Brooker and they ended the day with three wins, 13 ends and 25 points. Second placing went to Min Hill, Bryan Williams and Don Taylor with two wins and a draw while third was Maurice Reid, Alistair Mackenzie and Russell Lowe with two wins. Friday triples return to the greens again next Friday, January 3 at Hampstead.

■■FOOTBALL

One hand on the trophy AP When Liverpool lifts the English Premier League trophy in May – barring a monumental collapse – the end of a three-decade title drought will owe so much to Trent Alexander-Arnold. No game more so than the complete all-round performance from the right back that tore apart the closest challenger yesterday. After a key role in the first three goals, Alexander-Arnold netted himself to add the final flourish in a 4-0 victory over Leicester that sent Liverpool 13 points clear. And that’s with a game in hand, and half of the season remaining. Victory in the chill of central England to complete a packed Boxing Day programme came five days after the European champion added the Club World Cup to its trophy haul. “We played really good football, especially after all the travelling we’ve done and the intense period we’ve had,” Alexander-Arnold said. “It probably is our best performance of the season.” Roberto Firmino netted the winner against Flamengo in Qatar and the forward completed two crosses from Alexander-Arnold at King Power Stadium. The goal that suppressed any hope of a Leicester comeback came when James Milner grabbed the second of the night from the penalty spot in the 71st minute. The move that led to the penalty being awarded inevitably came from another of Alexander-Arnold’s crosses which was handled by Leicester defender Çalar Söyüncü. If Leicester had any hope of repeating its remarkable 5000-1 title triumph from 2016, it surely ended with this first home loss of the season. “The big thing that Liverpool have is confidence, having won competitions,” Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers said. “They have got that feeling there now, the squad is very strong, and they will be hard to shift in the second part of the season.” And unlike when Rodgers was Liverpool manager in 2013-14, this is surely a title that can’t get away from the club trying for so long to land a 19th English championship – and the first in the post-1992 Premier League era. “I can write the story myself: ‘Never before in the history of

Trent Alexander-Arnold has played a pivotal part in Liverpool being in full control of the English Premier League this season. PHOTO AP

British football has a team had a bigger lead and lost the lead,’” Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. “That sounds in my ear negative so why should we think about that?” There was no doubting the significance of the occasion to Leicester, which turbo-charged a 10-match prematch build-up. From cannons exploding fire to a light show, Leicester raised the tension. It just couldn’t manage a shot in the first half in a meek surrender when the defensive high line was

exposed and Liverpool relished launching counterattacks. If you are looking for a breakthrough, you look to Alexander-Arnold. A cross was delivered with such precision in the 31st that either Mohamed Salah or Firmino could have got on the end of it. It was the Brazilian who soared highest to power in the header. Sadio Mane spurned a chance to extend the lead before halftime, striking too casually at Kasper Schmeichel, whose double save frustrated Liverpool. The frustration wouldn’t last

long, once the only spell when Leicester’s attack came to life had been suppressed. Milner had been on the pitch barely a minute when Liverpool earned the penalty that the captain converted in the 71st. It started a dizzying seven-minute spell when Leicester was blown apart. Another delivery from Alexander-Arnold – low this time – was controlled by Firmino before he lifted the shot in and raced over to hug Klopp. Then Alexander-Arnold got to savour the acclaim himself. The Englishman surged the

length of the pitch to receive the ball from Mane and then slip the ball through Ben Chilwell’s legs for only his second goal of 2019. “I don’t get on the scoresheet too often,” Alexander-Arnold said. “(It was) a good counterattack, I saw the space, and Sadio has played a lovely ball and I thought, ‘Hit it first time.’” That he did, before going over to celebrate arms folded, beaming in front of the Liverpool fans. Soon, those hands are likely to be filled with another trophy. Maybe even some personal accolades.

Martial inspires comeback victory for Man United Anthony Martial’s double helped Manchester United come from behind to beat Newcastle 4-1 in the English Premier League. United was stunned when Matty Longstaff netted the opener for Newcastle. Martial equalised in the 24th minute. Mason Greenwood’s strike and

Marcus Rashford’s header sent United into the lead before halftime and Martial sealed the victory six minutes after the break. United rose to seventh place, while Newcastle is 10th in the standings. Meanwhile, playing at home is giving Chelsea the blues. Coach Frank Lampard blamed

the pressure of expectation at Stamford Bridge for inhibiting his players after a 2-0 home defeat against Southampton. Chelsea had not lost consecutive league games at home since 2011. “We have to mix up our game and break defensive lines, because teams aren’t stupid,’’ Lam-

pard said. ”You can’t have near on 70 per cent possession and not do more, not hit better crosses and final passes and create more shots on goal.’’ The defeat to Southampton – a modest side which only two months ago lost at home to Leicester 9-0 – was a sixth at home for Chelsea in 15 games overall.

“If you’re on a run like we are at home then there’s more pressure, because everyone talks about it and we feel it,” Lampard said. “People are respecting us as Chelsea, but we’re not playing like Chelsea.” By contrast, it was a second consecutive away win for coach Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Southampton.

Leonard shines for the Clippers AP Kawhi Leonard scored 11 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter and had 12 rebounds to help the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Los Angeles Lakers 111-106 in the NBA’s marquee Christmas game. Montrezl Harrell had 18 points off the bench, Paul George added 17 and the Clippers improved to 2-0 against the Lakers this season. Kyle Kuzma led the Lakers with 25 points. LeBron James had 23 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, and Anthony Davis had 24 points. The Lakers have lost four straight games. Los Angeles had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but video review showed James touched the ball last after Patrick Beverly knocked it away as James went up for a 3. George hit two free throws for the final margin. Meanwhile Joel Embiid outplayed Giannis Antetokounmpo in Philadelphia’s first home Christmas game in 31 years, finishing with 31 points and 11 rebounds to help the 3-point happy 76ers beat Milwaukee. as the Nuggets played at home on Christmas for the first time in 25 years. New Orleans sprang the upset despite committing 19 turnovers. The Pelicans pulled away late courtesy of the long-range shooting of Lonzo Ball and Ingram. New Orleans finished a fourgame trip with a 3-1 mark, which includes consecutive wins for the first time in a month. Jaylen Brown scored 30 points, Kemba Walker had 22 and Boston beat Toronto in the first Christmas Day NBA game played in Canada. Enes Kanter had 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Celtics snapped an eight-game losing streak north of the border and became the first Atlantic Division opponent to win in Toronto in more than four years. Draymond Green scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half, Damion Lee had 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and Golden State beat Houston. D’Angelo Russell added 20 points, and Glenn Robinson III had 18 to help the Warriors win their third straight and end the Rockets’ four-game winning streak. Injury-ravaged Golden State improved to 7-24.

Teens teaming up for ASB The teen American duo Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff and Catherine McNally have confirmed they’ll play doubles together at the ASB Classic. The pair who are both still eligible for junior tournaments, won their first WTA doubles tournament in Citi Open in their first appearance together at a WTA event. The teen queens then went on to play at the US Open via a wildcard, making the round of 16. In their two final doubles events this year, the pair advanced to the semi-finals in Austria and captured their second WTA doubles title in Luxemburg. ‘McCoco’ as the team has been dubbed is clearly one of the form combos on tour right now. The young duo saw the same success in the junior ranks winning the US junior doubles titles in their debut appearance together last year. Gauff hit the headlines in June by firstly becoming the youngest to ever qualify for the singles main draw at Wimbledon, then by beating tennis legend and her idol Venus Williams in the first round. The youngster continued her winning ways and made it to the second week of the grand slam confirming herself as the “future of American tennis”. The young protégé went on to win her first WTA tournament in Austria where she beat world No. 8 Kiki Bertens. She’s now the youngest player ranked in the top 100 and has a career-high ranking of No. 68 in the world. McCoco’s confirmation comes a day after tennis legends Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki announced their decision to play doubles together in Auckland, and Tournament Director Karl Budge is thrilled about how the field is coming together. “The Women’s Doubles field really rounds out an epic line up for us this year across both women’s and men’s weeks,

■■MOTOR RACING

Cooper dominates the Cemetery By Andy McGechan He came, he saw and he conquered ... visiting British champion Richard Cooper swept the major trophies at this year’s edition of the popular Suzuki International Series. The Suzuki hero from Nottingham was invited to New Zealand to race for the first time this year and he delivered all that was expected of him when he wrapped up the premier Formula One class outright at the series’ third and final round on Whanganui’s famous Cemetery Circuit on Boxing Day. He then exceeded those expectations when he also clinched victory in the glamour all-capacities Robert Holden Memorial feature race at Whanganui. The Robert Holden race win came at the end of a thrilling handlebar-to-handlebar battle with Whakatane’s Damon Rees, the young man who is shortly to head offshore to challenge Cooper on his home turf as the likeable Englishman seeks to defend his British Superstock 1000 title in 2020. The 36-year-old Cooper (Suzuki GSX-R1000) showed right from the opening round of the Suzuki International Series, in Taupo on December 7-8, that he was a fast learner, taking virtually no time at all to learn the unfamiliar Kiwi race tracks, although he was forced to settle for overall runner-up during the Taupo weekend, ending the event nine points behind Bay of Plenty’s Rees. Cooper came on strong at round two at Manfeild a week later, wiping out the deficit and rocketing to a one-point series lead over Rees. Although Cooper had his hands full battling Rees’ elder brother Mitch at Whanganui’s final round on Boxing Day – Mitch Rees winning both F1 races on the day – this was not too much of a concern to Cooper, who knew that it was really only Damon Rees that he needed to keep at bay. Cooper responded to Mitch Rees’ back-to-back F1 class wins at Whanganui by twice finishing runner-up, while Damon Rees finished third both times, and this was easily enough for Cooper to win the series outright, ending up five points clear of Damon Rees, with Mitch Rees claiming third overall for the series, a distant 29 points further back. Damon Rees led early in the 10lap Robert Holden Memorial feature race, with Cooper and Mitch Rees in hot pursuit. It stayed like that for the next eight laps, until the leaders start-

Richard Cooper took out the Robert Holden Memorial at Whanganui on Boxing Day.

ed lapping other riders and that’s when Cooper pounced, zipping past Damon Rees and into the lead, which he held until the end. Taupo’s defending Suzuki Series champion Scott Moir and Glen Eden’s national superbike champion Daniel Mettam rounded out the top five in the Robert Holden race. “I had no answer for Mitch (in the F1 class races) today,” said Cooper. “His pace was unbelievable and he broke the lap record here at Whanganui. “I was comfortable and I just did what I had to do to win the series. In the last race we always put a little bit more on the line and I saw my opportunity when the back-markers came into play. “I had planned to pass him on the first corner of the last lap, but I had an issue with my brakes and the lever was coming right back to the bar. “I had brake fade because the Robert Holden race was so soon after our second F1 superbike race and the brake pads were just too hot.

“I was adjusting the brakes as I was riding and that was tricky. “To come here and win this series for Sloan Frost Suzuki and TSS Red Baron is amazing, but then to top it all off by winning the Robert Holden race too is pretty special.” Cooper said he’d love to return and race again in the Suzuki International Series next year, adding “it would be a shame not to come back”. Meanwhile, Auckland’s Toby Summers won the 600cc Formula Two class at Whanganui’s finale, finishing the day ahead of Hastings rider Adam Chambers and Whanganui’s Richie Dibben, although Upper Hutt’s Rogan Chandler had done enough at the earlier two rounds to clinch the series win for this class. Hamilton’s Jesse Stroud, the 17-year-old son of Suzuki’s ninetime national superbike champion Andrew Stroud, won the GIXXER Cup class for a second consecutive season. Other class winners in the series this year were Taumarunui’s Leigh Tidman (Formula Three); Whanganui’s Ashley Payne (For-

mula Sport/Bears, senior); North Shore’s Gui Mendes (Formula Sport/Bears, junior); Hastings’ Gian Louie (Post Classics, Pre 89, senior); Lower Hutt’s Dean Bentley (Post Classics, Pre 89, junior); Auckland’s Peter Goodwin and Kendal Dunlop (F1 sidecars); Tauranga’s Barry Smith and Tracey Bryan (F2 sidecars); Whanganui’s Richie Dibben (Supermoto); Whanganui’s Bryan Stent and Tracey Bryan (Classic sidecars). Leading standings after the third and final round of the 2019 Suzuki International Series at Whanganui’s Cemetery Circuit on Boxing Day: Formula One Superbikes: 1. UK’s Richard Cooper 162 points; 2. Palou scores IndyCar drive for Coyne in 2020 Dale Coyne hired Spanish driver Alex Palou to drive the 2020 IndyCar season this week, the latest twist in a wild off-season of seat changes that has left a handful of decorated veteran drivers still looking for rides. Coyne did not announce a car number for Palou, who will race for a partnership to be called Dale

Coyne Racing with Team Goh. The team said it will have “further details on its complete 2020 programme at the beginning of the new year.” The team in November fired Sebastien Bourdais and has yet to announce any sort of extension with rising young American driver Santino Ferrucci. Earlier this week, Bourdais’

championship-winning engineer Craig Hampson moved to Arrow McLaren. The abrupt dismissal of Bourdais, a four-time series champion, came on the heels of the shocking benching of James Hinchcliffe by the team created when McLaren bought into Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

The McLaren team said it will pay Hinchcliffe the remainder of his contract, but it would rather put a pair of rookies in its cars for 2020 than bring the Canadian back for a sixth season. Hinchcliffe could have been a candidate at Coyne after Bourdais was bought out of the final year of his contract, but the team

instead has gone with the 22-yearold Palou, who most recently was a top rookie with one win in the Japanese Super Formula Series with TCS Nakajima Racing. It has been a scramble for seats since the IndyCar season ended in September and several organisations have yet to announce anything for 2020.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You can think of a challenge as an unfair obstacle thrown into your path or you can think of it as a test to reveal just how far you’ve come, how capable you are and where to focus your efforts toward mastery. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): On one hand, creative people can get bored by circumstances that don’t inspire them. On the other hand, remarkably creative ideas are born by pushing through that boredom into new possibilities. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The social media influencer lost followers by superimposing herself onto Paris instead of actually going there. There is no substitute for showing up in real life, and everyone knows the difference. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Symptoms are never the problem. Symptoms are the SOS in a bottle sent from the island of the problem. Avoid picking up the bottle and trying to comfort it. Go find the island where help is needed. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): We’re always changing, just not always in the direction we want to. That’s why everyone needs a witness. Trusted friends, competent professions and objective strangers provide an outside perspective. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Some shrink from danger. Others seek it. And you do neither. You meet life as it comes, assess your risk and act. This is the cool-headed approach of confident living. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): It will be pretty easy to get your way today. It only involves a couple steps. 1. Establish a line of communication. 2. Ask. The heavens are arranged to favour your diplomatic skill. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Write about your daily life including the small details of food, self-care, thoughts and routines. You’ll gain objectivity, insight and appreciation that extends both inward and outward. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You respect a careful decision-making process when you see it and will take into consideration others’ experiences before you make your choice. This is the smart way, and it will pay off, too. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You will give people what they want if you’re sure you can for the right reasons. To avoid future resentment, figure out what’s in it for you. If the answer is only “charity,” and you feel good, that’s enough. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Minute gestures convey deep and complicated emotions. Attention flows to certain things and doesn’t flow to others and the trail of that attention is a journey and a story. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You know the difference between small gifts and great ones. It has everything to do with the intention, affection and care that goes into the package.
