Burglar hits dairy in rapid raid By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

The owners of the Netherby Dairy have been left stunned and disappointed after a smash and grab break-in in the early hours of Friday morning saw between $4000 and $6000 worth of cigarettes stolen from their shop. Just after 2am on Friday morning a person, using a crowbar, forced entry to the shop before running in and attempting to open locked drawers of cigarettes before successfully removing one drawers packed full of cigarettes and running out of the shop. In total the break-in lasted less than a minute and was captured on CCTV. Kevin Deng, whose parents own the dairy, said it was disappointing as it was the first time they had had a break-in like that since they had taken over the ownership of the dairy. “The person had clearly been in here before and knew the layout, they snuck along the front of the building so they weren’t seen by the security camera out front that looks at the car park,” he said. “They have used a big crowbar to open the door and have ran in and gone through the drawers and they obviously knew were everything was.” Deng said they were still trying to determine the exact value of the cigarettes stolen, but that they estimated the value would be between $4000 and $6000.

While the store has not been burgled before, they have been the victim of another tobacco theft in 2015 when a man asked for a packet of tobacco. Deng put the $70 packet on the

counter and as he turned away to get cigarette papers, the man grabbed the packet and ran out of the store. The Dengs are still waiting for the reparation for that crime to be

paid, and the way that incident was handled by police doesn’t make them feel confident that there will be a positive outcome in this case. Deng said while the cigarette

targeted robbery was concerning, for a small dairy trying to compete with other food retailers in the area cigarettes provided a considerable part of their business.

Limited notification for water bottling consent By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Environment Canterbury has decided not to publicly notify a consent application from Fairton LP Limited. The company has applied to convert a dairy irrigation consent relating to a bore on a property it owns on the outskirts of Ashburton for water bottling purposes. Environment Canterbury has limited notified the application

to iwi only – being Te Runanga o Arowhenua, Te Taumutu Runanga, Te Ngai Tuahuriri and Te Runanga o Nga Tahu. This is on the basis that the proposed use of the water is considered to adversely affect the mauri, or life principle and essence, of the freshwater. “It is considered that issue solely effects these parties,” ECan says in its decision. There are three types of notification – non-notified, in the

case of adverse effects on the environment and people are considered less than minor, limited notified, when the opportunity to make submissions on the proposal is opened only to specifically affected persons, and publicly notified, if adverse effects are considered more than minor and anyone is able to make a submission. Fairton LP’s consent application seeks to change the conditions of an existing consent, for

a dairy farm, to take groundwater, reduce the area irrigated with that water, add stock-water as an additional use, and update standard water metering, efficiency and administrative conditions, for the next 15 years. It also seeks permission to use the water from that consent for commercial and industrial purposes including water bottling for a period of 12 years. The consent would take the water at the existing take rate,

but at lesser theoretical annual volume than currently authorised for irrigation and stock water. The site is close to State Highway One and is within an area of mixed use – farming and the now-closed Silver Fern Farms. It runs alongside the railway line, bounded by Works Road to the north, the Ashburton Business Estate to the east and the Rural Transport Limited yard to the south.

Big debate over Methven’s drinking water

By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

A $4.5 million investment would have fixed Methven’s drinking water woes for years to come, but instead $200,000 will be spent on a long-shot solution to solve the town’s water quality issues. Over the past three years boil water notices have been issued for Methven households on eight occasions. Some of those have been for up to 10 days. As owner of the supply the Ashburton District Council is required under government drinking water standards to provide Methven residents with a safe and secure supply. Currently the town’s supply is a gallery intake from the North Ashburton River, but at times the treatment plant cannot ensure the water is protozoa compliant. To meet drinking water standards the council is looking for

an alternative treatment system that could involve drawing water from another source to bridge periods of poor water quality or using a $4.5 million membrane treatment option. This week district councillors looked at next year’s draft budgets and discussed a business case prepared by staff on options for enhancing Methven’s water supply. The cheap option is to drill a bore in the hope of finding sufficient water to supplement the gallery supply, but indications are that the chances of finding water at a reasonable depth are slim. The other option was to invest $4.5 million in a membrane treatment upgrade. Improving the quality of Methven and other rural villages’ water was not an option, council service delivery manager Neil McCann said.

“With the new water regulations we have to lift the bar and put money into treatment options. We have to be absolutely sure 100 per cent we have a supply that’s compliant,” he said. While membrane treatment was the ultimate, long-term answer, if a good supply of water was found at 200 metres that would be the far cheaper option and would provide an alternative source when needed, McCann said. The chances of finding water near the supply intake were not high, however, he added. “You might strike it lucky, like winning Lotto, but the $200,000 might also be gone and we’d need to go straight to the membrane. If we spend $4.5 miilion there’ll be no boil water notices,” Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said. Chief executive Hamish Ri-

ach made it clear to councillors that however they chose to do it, complying with drinking water standards was not optional. “The new regulator with new intentions and enforcement on drinking water standards is absolutely coming. “We don’t know the details and the timing, but we absolutely know increased standards for drinking water are coming and a new regulator will be holding us and all councils to account on it. The problem won’t go away,” he said. Councillor Rodger Letham favoured “having a crack” at drilling to see if there was water available, but accepted the chances of getting it were slim. While councillors were tempted by the membrane treatment option, they voted to try the well-drilling option first. Methven will also have an ad-

ditional $221,000 spent in the next year to upgrade its water storage capabilities. Work on a new reservoir was included in the council’s longterm plan for next year, but concept designs and indicative costs show that the amount set aside is insufficient and an additional $221,700 is needed to ensure the project can be completed. In its long-term plan the council intended to spend $794,000 on the design and construction of a replacement reservoir. It will now build the new reservoir and when this is commissioned, a condition assessment and repairs will be carried out on the existing concrete tank. When it is brought back into use, Methven’s supply will be significantly boosted with the two storage reservoirs providing a total storage capacity of 1200 cubic metres.

Walking to their own tune By Heather Mackenzie

photographers@theguardian.co.nz

Harpist Michelle Doyle and violinist/vocalist Michael O’Donnell are bringing their blend of a classical, Celtic and jazz type vibe to the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall tonight. The Australian musicians are in New Zealand hiking the 3000km Te Araroa trail and playing at various venues along the way, to launch their first album A Walking Place and to raise money for osteoporosis research. Diagnosed with the condition at 24, Doyle knows how important it is to maintain a positive outlook and to keep physically active. “When we first started the hike I didn’t know if I would make it all the way to Invercargill, but here we are in Methven with 740km left to go and I’m thinking I might just make it.” While Doyle always knew the hike was a good plan, partner O’Donnell took a bit of convincing, but once she put the idea of performing along the way in his head, he quickly changed his mind and thought it was a great idea. “I find the hiking very meditative. Two weeks of walking is enough to push the rubbish out of my head and to make room for the music to come,” he said.

Doyle and O’Donnell may be walking the length of the country carrying their packs, but their instruments have opted for a cushier option. The harp and violin are being transported ahead of them via a network of strangers offering to carry the instruments to the next town, or if that fails, a courier. At their concert in Nelson Doyle asked the audience if anybody was heading south or knew of anyone leaving Nelson soon who would have room for a harp and violin. “A friend of Methven’s Viv Barrett was in the audience and she offered to transport them to Methven for us.” After the concert the logistics of getting the special cargo south were worked out. “She told us that she wouldn’t be home when we planned to drop them off, but she’d leave the door open so we didn’t have to leave them outside. “She was true to her word. When we arrived the door was unlocked so we left them in the lounge with a thank you note.” They both agreed that the kindness they have been shown in New Zealand has been outstanding. O’Donnell said they have not experienced any issues around

sending their instruments south with strangers. “The harp is so big, so I am sure if it did go missing someone in New Zealand would pretty soon notice it,” he said. Doyle said she was more worried about the airlines damaging her harp case. She said she’s witnessed baggage handlers literally throwing it in the past. Prior to leaving Australia the duo had booked their 20 nationwide performance venues nine months in advance and at that stage Methven didn’t make the cut as the Mid Canterbury town is not officially on the trail map. The pre-arranged concert dates certainly give them a schedule to work to, but they have also built in plenty of rest days for practising, meeting locals and to eat good meals. So when Sue Stewart from the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall contacted them to see if they would play in Methven on the way through, they thought ‘why not, we have the time’. “It was really good timing as the Wanaka gig had just cancelled on us, plus we were coming to Methven anyway,” O’Donnell said. Turning up sound around the council table By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

The days of struggling to hear speakers around the Ashburton District Council meeting table will soon be over. The council’s current sound system is old and inflexible and, on many occasions, cuts speakers off mid-speech and other times it fails to light up and identify a councillor who wants to speak. The problem has prompted the council to move forward the purchase of the sound system destined for installation in the new civic building’s meeting chamber. On Thursday councillors agreed to spend $86,000 on a new sound system for the council chamber.

The new system was designed to be portable and would be relocated to the new building, business support manager Paul Brake said. “This won’t be wasted money, we’re just spending it a bit earlier.” The new system had been trialled and it was a huge improvement on the current one, deputy mayor Liz McMillan said. As councillors indicated they wanted to speak, their names would appear on screen in order and that ensured whoever was chairing a meeting was able to allocate speaking opportunities as requested, she said. The existing system was still used by a few councils and the council will endeavour to sell its old units.

Motorhome show ready to go By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

The sites are marked out and filled up, the marquees are up and everything is ready to go for the annual South Island Motorhome Show. The show has been run in Ashburton for more than 10 years, and has been organised by the Lions Club of Ashburton since 2018, after it was handed over by original organisers, Murray and Bev Meadows. Convenor Brendon Quinn said the event was set to have more trade sites than ever, and they have had to make extra allowances for private sellers, having to turn away a number during the week. Organisers have also had to change how the social campers park at the event, trying to fit as many in as possible in the expectation they will see more at the event than usual due to the national rally being held in Oamaru next weekend. Members of the Lions club have been busy throughout the week preparing the showgrounds for the event, carefully planning out every site and hand marking the layout. Organisers were keeping their fingers crossed that the weather was good for the weekend.

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

For an investment of just over $48,000 Ashburton will have a Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB) that will give the community access to a large pool of information about Ashburton District events, activities and service. The bureau will be run under the umbrella of Community House and manager John Driscoll said, with the council’s funding commitment secured, the service will be up and running within six months. Driscoll said a steering group can now be established and a paid co-ordinator appointed to run the service. This person will

In brief Discover Mt Hutt Discover Mt Hutt will be held tomorrow, after being postponed from today due to forecast poor weather. Conditions are expected to be much better tomorrow, with a fine day on the mountain. Between 10am and 4pm visitors will be able to experience New Zealand’s best ski resort in a summer setting with hiking, mountain biking and helicopter rides. The day raised more than $40,000 for local charities last year, and organisations set to benefit this year include the Ashburton Cancer Society. Ski area staff, who volunteer for the day, and Methven Lions, are hoping to hit a similar figure this year.

‘Callous’ advertising

PHOTO JAIME PITT-MACKAY “Each day the forecast has gotten better, earlier in the week it was definitely raining, the next day it was showers and the next day it says overcast with light showers so hopefully it is okay,” he said. Fire and Emergency New Zealand will have a manned site

over the weekend and will host three short presentations providing fire safety advice for mobile homes today. The show is open for two days, today and tomorrow, with an entry fee of $5 per person and free entry for those aged under 15.

Unfortunately earlier in the year a number of signs around the town advertising the show were vandalised. A sign on Racecourse Road had had a number of bolts removed from supporting wires while a sign on River Terrace was pushed over.

also recruit a team of volunteers. While the way is now cleared for the CAB to be established, it will take six months of working with an established CAB before the service will be ticked off and running in Ashburton. When councillors discussed seed funding for the CAB at Thursday’s council meeting, they had no hesitation in giving it the green light. The service was one that would fill a void and its location in Community House was ideal, Lynette Lovett said. The CAB provides quality independent, up-to-date information and advice and is established in more than 80 locations

around New Zealand. Information is free and advice that helps people understand their rights and responsibilities is also available. As part of the national network, Ashburton people will also have access to a national data base of information. An important role for the CAB will be maintaining a community directory of all organisations, clubs and services in the district, Driscoll said. In the past this was done by the council, but the directory has not been updated for several years. An area in Community House has been identified for the service which will also have a pri-

vate room that will be available for sensitive discussions. If the council had not agreed to seed fund the CAB’s establishment, the project could have been delayed for up to nine months while an alternative source of funds was found. The council will also grant the CAB $15,000 of operational funding as part of next year’s budget on the condition that visitor information is also available. This will be a trial and the uptake of this information will be monitored over a 12 month period. The seed funding and operations grant will come from the council’s economic development budget.

Advertising an Auckland apartment as being in an area lacking homeless men or state tenants has been branded “totally insensitive”. Bernie Smith of the Monte Cecilia Housing Trust said it was “callous”. The ad says: “No homeless men are wondering [sic] the streets ‘round here, no housing New Zealand folks or shelters ... just high-end owner-occupiers and businessman [sic] and those kids who think they are way too clever.” The ad showed no understanding or empathy of the homeless issue which blighted New Zealand, – NZME Smith said.

Killer awarded compo RSA shooter and triple murderer William Bell has been awarded compensation after he was illegally strip searched in prison. Bell became one of New Zealand’s most notorious killers when he gunned down three people and wounded a fourth at the Mt Wellington-Panmure RSA in December 2001. Mary Hobson, 44, Wayne Johnson, 56, and William Absolum, 63, were killed during the robbery. He also shot Susan Couch, who worked part time doing the club’s accounts. Bell shot all three in the chest before bludgeoning them with the butt of his shotgun. Last month, Bell was awarded $1000 in compensation, a Corrections spokesperson confirmed to media. It came after the 2018 High Court ruling that compensation was payable to prisoners who were subject to an unlawful strip search at Auckland Prison in 2016. – NZME

Rugby club hit by thieves By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

A local club has been left with a $1000 bill to replace a number of irrigation pods that were stolen from their grounds this week. Allenton Rugby Club past president and groundsman Craig Street arrived to do his mowing on Wednesday when he noticed something was amiss. “I watered the field on Monday, left it on Tuesday as there was training and on Wednesday I came down to mow and moved them around and realised something was off,” he said. A row of three pods had been cut from the hoses that feed water between them and another was also removed. “They’ve obviously got a big knife or a hacksaw and just cut through the pipe,” he said. Street said the club had recently been the victim of another theft when a battery was stolen from the club’s tractor, leaving them nearly $1500 out of pocket before the season even started. “It is just a shame because it impacts negatively on the club as

that is money that could be used to purchase quite a lot of gear,” he said. “We’ve already had to spend $1500 when we shouldn’t have needed to.” With fewer irrigation pods and the season just around the corner, it also puts more pressure on the club’s volunteers and their bid to get the pitches green and ready for the season. The ground’s main pitch is in good shape, but with a large area of junior pitches to water, Street said it would take up more of their time having to move the pods around to cover the area. Police have been notified of the theft, though Street said he hoped by going public it might jog the memory of people who may have seen something. “The police can only do so much so hopefully somebody might have been biking past and saw a couple of guys and they’ll think ‘oh that could’ve been that’,” he said. Street said he hoped it served as a good reminder for other rugby clubs to ensure that they kept what property they could secure.

First NZ coronavirus case confirmed NZME A person who has recently travelled to Iran has become the first confirmed case of coronavirus in New Zealand. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed the news speaking to media in Sydney yesterday. The person is aged in their 60s and arrived in New Zealand on Wednesday on Emirates flight EK450 from Tehran, via Bali. “The person arrived in Auckland on February 26 and travelled home in a private car,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Health said. “Their family became concerned about their condition and called Healthline. “They were advised to seek medical attention and attended Auckland City Hospital emergency department that same day. All were wearing masks on arrival. As a result of the individual’s symptoms and travel history they were admitted and tested.” The results of the test were confirmed at 4.15pm yesterday and makes New Zealand the 48th country to have a confirmed case of the virus. The person is in a stable condition. “They are in an improving condition in isolation, in a negative pressure room to prevent any spread of the disease,” the spokesman said. Public health officials have begun tracing the person’s other close contacts and people who were on the same flight. The Ministry of Health says there is a high likelihood of sporadic cases in New Zealand but the chances of a community outbreak remains low, despite the confirmed case. “The Ministry of Health is confident the public risk from this new infection is being well managed because of the public mes-

Backpacker allegedly raped near Hamilton NZME A 24-year-old Danish backpacker was allegedly raped after being picked up hitchhiking and taken to a remote cemetery near Hamilton on Thursday. A man was arrested and charged with rape an hour later. Detective Senior Sergeant Will Loughrin said the woman was hitchhiking just outside of Hamilton on Thursday when she was picked up. She was then driven about 80km to a secluded cemetery near Hikutaia where the man allegedly attacked her. “At some point she was able to escape during the attack.” Someone found her soon after on some farmland nearby in a state of distress, Loughrin said. The woman was able to give the police information about the car and within an hour two young officers stopped a car of that description and spoke to its driver. Loughrin said the man gave the officers “key features” which led to his arrest. A 50-year-old Hamilton man appeared in Hamilton District Court and was granted interim name suppression. He will reappear in March. Loughrin commended the “quick work” of the young officers who were able to “get a really quick resolution to a really horrendous crime”. The woman is being supported by police and other agencies, he said.

saging, awareness of Covidd-19 disease and our public health response to managing cases and contacts,” the spokesman said. The confirmation followed a statement earlier yesterday afternoon by the Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield that tests were being carried out on the person in Auckland City Hospital. Ireland and the Netherlands have also announced the first cases of the deadly virus in the past 24 hours. Health Minister David Clark yesterday an-

nounced a raft of new measures to combat the spread of coronavirus, including new travel restrictions from Iran. The Government will also be bolstering the health presence at international airports and there will be no exemptions for overseas students from China to enter New Zealand, Clark said. So far, the Government has conducted 130 coronavirus tests in New Zealand – they have all come back negative. Right – Health Minister David Clark

Lighting fires in the name of science Hectares of mature gorse in the Rakaia Gorge are scheduled to go up in flames between March 1 and 15 to support research into rural fire science. Fire and Emergency New Zealand and Scion fire scientists working with the Department of Conservation have earmarked around 80 hectares of gorse off Double Hill Run Road for the burns. Scion senior fire scientist Grant Pearce, who is a former Ashburton College pupil, says that it does seems odd to be lighting fires when the country is so dry and with the Australian bushfires fresh in people’s minds. “Our goal is to gather information on how fire spreads through different vegetation fuels to develop improved fire behaviour models and prediction tools for rural fire managers,” he said. “The best way to learn more about fire behaviour and flame spread mechanisms is to study actual fires in conditions as close to real life as possible. We plan to carry out the burns over five to six days, depending on the weather. “At the most, we will do two burns in one day.” A year’s preparation working with Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz), DOC and Envi-

Ashburton College alumnus Grant Pearce is the lead researcher on a project that will see 80 hectares of gorse burned in the Rakaia Gorge in the name of science. PHOTO SUPPLIED ronment Canterbury means all the permits and approvals are in place. Work preparing the six plots to be burned has seen the site

mapped in detail, firebreaks bulldozed on site and buffer areas that will be burned out ahead of the main burns, which was carried out this week.

Fire experts are coming from around the world to record and observe the research burns. “We have also been talking to all the neighbouring property

owners and they have made visits to the site to see the location for themselves and safety measures that are in place, as well as letting local communities know what is going on,” he said. Fires will only be lit under the weather conditions specified in the fire permit and with the prior approval of Fenz. Firefighters and equipment will be on site the whole time and a helicopter will be on standby. In addition, a traffic management plan will be in place for the road adjacent to the burn area. “As our climate changes and extreme fire conditions become more common, our research findings will hopefully help prevent loss of life, property and our native vegetation and wildlife,” he said. Rural wild fires can be devastating. Every year in New Zealand around 3000 wildfires burn some 6000 hectares of land, costing New Zealand more than $100 million per year. That is just the direct costs of the firefighting response and immediate damage to property. It does not include the indirect losses associated with damage to rural lands or conservation resources, and personal property and lives, which can be many times greater.

Coronavirus rocks the stock markets NZME New Zealand share prices shifted 2 per cent lower in response to another sharp fall on Wall Street as concerns about the spread of coronavirus continued to mount. In the opening minutes of trade, the NZX-50 was down 209 points at 11,205, in contrast to the Dow Jones Index’s greater 4.4 per cent decline. US stocks are now on track for their worst week since the Global Financial Crisis. Most major sharemarkets elsewhere in the world have also gone sharply in reverse. The Dow finished 1190 points down at 25,766. The US benchmark index has fallen by more than 10 per cent since its most recent peak, thereby meeting the technical definition of a correction. This week, the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said it expected cases in the United States to rise. The virus has now infected more than 82,000 people worldwide. Most of the cases are in China. International ratings agency

NZ stocks fell after the US sharemarket officially entered correction territory. PHOTO NZME Standard & Poor’s reaffirmed New Zealand’s ratings and said it doesn’t expect the fall-out from covid-19 to substantially weigh on the country’s economy long-term growth prospects. S&P rates New Zealand AA/A-1+ on a foreign currency basis and at AA+/A-1+ in local currency terms and said its outlook is positive. The outlook “reflects our view of the country’s declining exposure to risks related to its high external debt”, it said. The reducing risks give it “more policy space to respond to poten-

tial macroeconomic and financial sector shocks”, it said. However, “we don’t expect the slowing China economy from the recent outbreak of the new coronavirus to substantially weigh on New Zealand’s long-term growth prospects”, it said. According to S&P, while Chinese tourism and student numbers are likely to weaken in the first quarter of 2020 with the New Zealand government’s travel restrictions, “we expect it to pick up again once the restrictions are eased”. The Government recently extended a travel ban to and from China for another eight days and yesterday Universities New Zealand international programmes committee chairman, Grant Guilford, said time was running out for New Zealand universities to get a special exemption to allow about 6000 students, currently stranded in China, to start the first semester here. Sources close to the sector suggest the up-front cost to the sector will be in the region of $700 million to $800 million in lost fees, living costs, and travel and tourism across the sector.

Ashburton Guardian 15

YOUR VIEW Ashburton Museum An article in Saturday’s Guardian headed “Museum collection inventory urgent” gives an extremely misleading picture of the state of the Ashburton Museum and its collection. I am not sure if it is the current museum manager who has provided this misinformation or your reporter who has not checked all sides of the story, but as a former director of the museum I feel I must inform you of the true facts. Looking at the various statements individually, the first is “The collection of items managed by the Ashburton Museum is the largest in the South Island”. I’m sure museums such as Canterbury, Nelson, Southland, Otago and even Shantytown at Greymouth would be interested to hear that their collections have been reduced in size, especially when the article correctly states the Ashburton Museum’s collection contains about 20,000 objects. “Only a small percentage of these have been recorded in its electronic database.” The only items not recorded in the electronic database would be some of those that have entered the collection since I retired in April 2016. When the museum became aware, about 2010, that a move to a new building was definitely going to happen at some point a large part of the Baring Square building was closed off to create a work area and the object collection was re-catalogued. This involved checking and correcting each entry in the existing electronic database, a specialist museums software programme called Past Perfect, adding photographs to most entries and creating new records for any item that did not have one. Some items were de-accessioned at this time. It took until we moved in 2014 to complete this task “Only a very small number of these are stored at the museum. The rest are in sheds and a variety of locations around the district”. When the museum collection was moved from the old buildings in 2014 the entire collection, without exception, was moved to the new building. With the exception of a very small number of de-accessioned maps at the old polytech building in Cameron Street, the only objects stored in “sheds and a variety of locations” would now be those the current museum manager has caused to be stored in such places. Who knows where those maps went. “A lack of resources means these items have not been catalogued.” Virtually everything was catalogued when the new museum opened in 2014 and much of the new material that arrived in the following two years, before I retired, was also catalogued by staff. Most of the items currently not catalogued would be those that arrived after April 2016, during which period the museum staff has increased from three to five. It is correct that item locations were not updated at the time of the move for the simple reason

that it was not possible to assign a shelf number until items were actually in place in the new building. Once the work of setting up new displays was completed good progress was being made with updating this part of the catalogue entries. “While museum staff knew where items were stored, the contents of many boxes was often unknown because the contents had not been catalogued”. Not correct. Every item possible had been catalogued prior to 2014. In that process every item had been given an accession number which in some way was attached to the item and in most cases these numbers were repeated on the outside of boxes for the small part of the collection that was actually boxed. If there is no number on the outside of a box it is only necessary to open the box to obtain the number from the actual item and then check the number in the Past Perfect catalogue. “Moving from the old museum, where there was no electronic database, to the new”. Again, far from correct. The Past Perfect electronic database cataloguing system was installed at the old museum in 1999, 15 years before the move, and the software was regularly updated as new versions became available, before, and after, the move to the new building. “Every item had to be identified and its location recorded. This was an incredibly time consuming job.” Every item had been identified in the three years prior to the move and recording locations is only a matter of locating an item in its storage area, entering its ac-

cession number in Past Perfect to bring up its record and changing the storage location to the one for the new building. “Under 50 per cent of the [20,000] objects are recorded in the electronic database”. Given that virtually 100 per cent were recorded in the electronic database in 2013 when the move was made, that means the collection has doubled in size since then. Given that the museum’s collection policy was considerably tightened prior to that time to reduce the amount of new material coming in, and given also that only a relatively small amount of material was received between the move to the new building in 2014 and my retirement in April 2016, most of that increase must have occurred in the present museum manager’s time. “Many objects were assumed to be in the collection without any record of exactly what they were, or why, or how they were there.” There is some truth in this, but not all of it, and there are reasons for this. It is also not insurmountable. The collection began in the 1960s in an old house in Cass Street and no written record was started until 1976 when known details were recorded in exercise books. A card system was also started in the 1980s, but was replaced by the Past Perfect electronic database in 1999. Obviously in the very early years not a lot of information was recorded and some of those early items remain in the collection today. However, it is possible to establish some provenance (history) for many of these items. An example is the collection of firearms

recently removed from the museum, but not de-accessioned. The museum manager reported they had no provenance or connection to Ashburton. It has taken only five phone calls to establish provenance for all except one item and a strong connection for them to Ashburton people. This is work that could have been done by staff but volunteers outside the museum have now had to do it. New Zealand’s museum community is small, and stories such as this spread quickly. At a time when the Ashburton District Council may be advertising for museum staff it is very unfortunate a substantially incorrect article such as this has been published. It can do no good for the institution’s reputation which is why I have sought to correct it. Michael Hanrahan Director, Ashburton Museum 2006-2016.

Cenotaph I find myself in complete agreement with RSA president Merv Brenton (Your View, February 24), and would like to add to his comments. Mr Brenton responds to Cr Rodger Letham’s comments about relocating the cenotaph by asking whether the museum will be next to be relocated off the main road site. Does Cr Letham recall that one of the justifications McKay, Brown et al made for siting the museum building where it is, with all the controversy it continues to generate, was to form a civic precinct. That concept was, of course, destroyed by the same councillors when they prioritised the Baring Square East site for the

library and civic centre building. Had he done his homework, Cr Letham might have realised the elegant solution town planners made in siting the cenotaph, clock tower and the other Baring Square East memorial in a line with the Borough Council at one end and the County Council at the other. A feasibility study would probably have revealed to him that it could not be moved, and his mayor, with his new-found love of keeping town features in situ, would have disagreed with him anyway. Baring Square East is already cluttered, and had Cr Letham considered how the cenotaph is used he would realise there is not appropriate space for it there. In my view, it is only right that we are inconvenienced by road detours on Anzac and Armistice Days. After all, those commemorated by the cenotaph were more than a little inconvenienced themselves. The often silent Cr Letham seems to have revealed which is the better path for him to follow. Finally, is it too much to ask whether Sue Newman, or even a Guardian sub-editor, could proof-read her writing – “the cenotaph could be relocated across town to Baring Square West”. Selwyn Price Editor’s footnote: The editor apologises for the error regarding the location of the cenotaph. It is most regrettable. However, he also wonders if he should expect a similar acknowledgement for the letter writer’s failure to spell councillor Rodger Letham’s name correctly, which luckily was spotted by a sub-editor. Third Stewart concert Sir Rod Stewart will perform a third New Zealand concert especially for his South Island fans. The Maggie May hit-maker will play Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium, November 11, as part of his The Hits! world tour. Tickets go on sale at 11am on March 6. The announcement follows exceptional demand for tickets to his two Mission Estate shows in Napier, with the November 14 gig selling out within an hour before a second show was announced for November 15. Covid-19: ‘We’re all going to get infected’ NZME An Australian virologist at the forefront of coronavirus testing has warned “we’re all going to get infected” with coronavirus “at some point”. Associate Professor Ian Mackay from the University of Queensland also warned on Thursday that the virus could be “with us for life”, he told The Australian. “It doesn’t look like this virus is ever going to go back in its box.” Professor Mackay said the virus would become impossible to avoid. “At some point in the coming months or years we’re all going to get infected because we’ve all been infected by

these other endemic viruses,” he said. “We already have four of these coronaviruses, mostly causing colds. We get them every year. They peak during winter but they still move around – between us – during the rest of the year as well. So it’s likely this might become one of those.” The Australian expert’s comments come as one of the world’s leading coronavirus experts warned it’s “inevitable” every country will eventually be hit by the disease, which is proving to be “particularly wily” and “intelligent”. Speaking at a press conference in London on Thursday, Professor Gabriel Leung from

the University of Hong Kong said it was likely the virus had already spread to most nations. “If you don’t have it or you don’t have any reported cases, it’s because you’re not testing, it’s not because you don’t have it,” he said. Professor Leung recently travelled to China as part of the World Health Organisation’s WHO-China Joint Mission on Covid-19. There, he and 24 other experts toured around Beijing, Guangdong, Sichuan and Wuhan to learn more about the disease and observe how the government was working to control the outbreak. While China’s containment measures appeared to have

worked, many key questions remained, he said. “What we don’t know is do we have to do everything the Chinese did or just some of it? And if it’s some of it, which bits?” he said on Thursday. “That is so crucial as the rest of the world is now going to experience the first wave.” Scientists also need to confirm whether people can be infected with the virus more than once. “The four human coronaviruses don’t generally, for mild infections, give you neutralising immunity – that’s why you can get it again and again and again,” Professor Leung said. “This (virus) is much more nuanced and much more complex,” he added.

Styles ‘okay’ after robbery Harry Styles has insisted he’s “okay” after he was robbed at knifepoint earlier this month. The 26-year-old singer was reported to have had money stolen from him almost two weeks ago when he was robbed at knifepoint while out in London, and he has now said he’s doing fine following the attack. When asked how he is doing following the incident during an appearance on the Today show, Harry simply said: “I’m okay, thanks. Thank you for asking.” Styles was reported to have been robbed on February 14, while police confirmed the incident they did not mention the One Direction star.

■■SYRIA

Twenty-nine Turkish soldiers killed in air strike AP An air strike by Syrian government forces killed 29 Turkish soldiers in northeast Syria, a Turkish official said yesterday, marking the largest death toll for Turkey in a single day since it first intervened in Syria in 2016. The deaths were a serious escalation in the direct conflict between Turkish and Russia-backed Syrian forces that

has been waged since early February. Rahmi Dogan, the governor of Turkey’s Hatay province bordering Syria’s Idlib region, said 29 troops were killed and others were seriously wounded in the attack. He said 39 injured were being treated in Turkish hospitals. Three Turkish soldiers were killed earlier in Idlib. At least 50 have now been killed in Idlib since the start of Febru-

ary. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was holding an emergency security meeting in Ankara, state-run Anadolu news agency reported. Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevult Cavusoglu spoke to Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg by telephone. Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin, who plays a senior role in foreign affairs, also spoke to US national security

adviser Robert O’Brien. The air strike came after a Russian delegation spent two days in Ankara for talks with Turkish officials on the situation in Idlib, where a Syrian government offensive has sent hundreds of thousands of civilians fleeing towards the Turkish border. The offensive has also engulfed many of the 12 military observation posts Turkey has in Idlib.

Jeremy Kyle returning Jeremy Kyle is making a comeback to television after the firestorm of criticism after a guest on his talk show later took their own life. The host had his popular British talk show cancelled last year after the death. Steven Dymond was found dead after failing a lie detector test on the show designed to establish whether he had been faithful to his partner. Kyle’s return to screens was shared by his new manager Claire Powell on Instagram. “So pleased to welcome the very talented and very real ... Jeremy Kyle exclusively to @the_can_group,” Powell wrote in an Instagram caption.

OUR VIEW

Mid Canty tourism needs security blanket A

lot of emphasis is put on the tourism potential in the Mid Canterbury region, and in some ways we over promise and under deliver on so many aspects. Put bluntly, we’re not that great at telling everyone how good this place is and exactly what is on offer and available to anyone who calls by to pay us a visit. And we need to be so much better at it because the current global situation around coronavirus and its potential damage to the number of people visiting New Zealand demands us to be better. We don’t realise how much of a hotbed of activity for a visitor to our country we are – and with

developments in the pipeline over the next few years, that demand and interest is only set to grow, so it’s important we’re on the front foot and ensuring that everything is as it should be for when the influx does come. Methven is a bit of a perfect example. It’s a ghost town at the moment, full of locals and contract workers who are largely

keeping the town’s businesses alive through their patronage and their dollar spends, but the desire is always for the winter months to arrive so that a whole new flood of people come into the town. Every time I’ve driven past the town’s i-SITE over the past few weeks, it’s been desolate and that can’t bode well for the potential income the centre needs to meet its running costs. Sure, it might be seasonal – but something needs to be done to ensure the safety of our tourism sector during the quieter months, and perhaps provisions need to be put in place should coronavirus have a real impact on the winter months in the

district. At a meet the candidates meeting last year, prior to the election, all four mayoral candidates, and some of those standing for the role of councillor, stood up and pledged their commitment to the future of tourism in Mid Canterbury. Maybe now might be the right time for those very same members to stand up and act on their pledges and ensure that a sector of our community, which could bring in significant value in the next few years, is up and running and fully functional when that moment does come. Election promises are not quickly forgotten, particularly when made in front of a

community of people who are passionate about the project and right now organisations like Experience Mid Canterbury will need as much support, whether it be financial or just guidance, as is possible to ensure that a potentially nasty virus wave can be ridden out without too many issues. How that happens, or who is given the task of bringing together a plan isn’t the important part of this. It’s ensuring that at least something is done, or some discussions are at least started. We can’t afford to have people sitting back waiting for things to happen, only a front foot approach is suitable in these circumstances.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Saturday, February 29, the 60th day of 2020. There are 306 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On February 29, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a second Neutrality Act as he appealed to American businesses not to increase exports to belligerents. On this date: In 1504, Christopher Columbus, stranded in Jamaica during his fourth voyage to the West, used a correctly predicted lunar eclipse to frighten hostile natives into providing food for his crew. In 1796, President George Washington proclaimed Jay’s Treaty, which settled some outstanding differences with Britain, in effect. In 1892, the United States and Britain agreed to submit to arbitration their dispute over seal-hunting rights in the Bering Sea. (A commission later ruled in favour of Britain.) In 1916, singer, actress and TV personality Dinah Shore was born Frances Rose Shore in Winchester, Tennessee. (Shore, who claimed March 1, 1917 as her birthdate, died in 1994 just days before she would have turned 78.) In 1924, in a first for New Zealand schools, intelligence tests were imported by the rector of Waitaki Boys’ High School and used on all its first-year post-primary school students. In 1940, Gone with the Wind won eight Academy Awards, including best picture of 1939; Hattie McDaniel won for best supporting actress, the first black performer so honoured. In 1956, President Dwight D Eisenhower announced he would seek a second term of office. In 1960, the first Playboy Club, featuring waitresses clad in bunny outfits, opened in Chicago. In 1964, A milling road built by the Bayten Timber Company provided the first ever vehicle access to the remote Urewera settlement of Maungapōhatu –

Making good on a resolution A

stute readers may recall a bold proclamation I made prior to Christmas where a commitment was made to shake things up this year on matters pertaining to my ground-based personal transportation. Well, happily, I can now report that for once this scribe has actually followed through on what is sometimes mistaken for noisy, puffy bluster. Which is fair enough, ’cos I’ll be the first to concede it often is. Following that column I had lots of comments from family and friends, (chiefly from family as there are way more of them), that I was setting myself up for disaster, destruction and grievous personal injury. You’d have thought from their reaction that I was going to form a demonstration e-scooter solo stunt act and take it to fairs and carnivals the length of the country. “See Peter Mac leap ten grain silos on a rocket-assisted e-scooter. “Watch as New Zealand’s most elderly disc jockey performs backward flips and jumps curbs.” Evil MacKnievel. I think they envisaged me as the crustiest of all demons. On a small push-off electric conveyance. Sheesh! Anyway, fresh back from Christmas holidays the interrogation began. In fact, the boss was in such suspense, I received a text from Carol even before coming back, asking if I had made the purchase.

Peter Mac

PETE’S PERSPECTIVE

“Due diligence” was my standard reply to all who enquired. “This requires careful due diligence.” Reality was, it was taking a while to find something of Mrs Macs I could discreetly sell to help pay for it. Nah, that’s a lie, but it got you going didn’t it? Eventually, following a bit of reading of online reviews, a few shop visits and general things one does in the endeavour of said due diligence, I was offered the opportunity to have a brief test-ride of one of the e-scooters we had as a prize for the duck race. It was pretty good but I had one reservation. I was a little stooped and the handlebar bit could not be adjusted. This is one of the problems that 6’2” people have. That and the fact it’s impossible to find size 13 shoes in this town. But I digress. I was in luck. The store had a ‘pro’ version of the e-scooter which had taller handlebars (just right), a bit more

oooomph, and slightly larger wheels. I took that one for a spin around the S&C carpark and found I had run out of excuses. This would be my mount. So now I am approximately a week and a half into it. And the verdict? Brilliant – 15 to 20km/h. Surfing the sidewalk. I have already worked out that I am saving at least $50 per week in petrol. And keeping the kms down on my car. Don’t get me wrong, I will still use the car in situations where I need to, but a lot of car running is random flitting here and there.

I’m banking on savings of $2500 per year. Except I look at that as a fortnight on the Gold Coast, or some other desirable, pleasurable pastime. Just because I stopped being wasteful and considered some economies. It’s not about being stingy. It’s about maximising what resources you have. And, just a few summers off retirement age, one needs to consider these things. One thing I have noticed whilst out on it in Ashburton is that there are no others. Well, they are obviously out there somewhere but clearly not obvious. In fact, I have yet to see another one anywhere around town on a daily basis. The thing should have recovered its costs in about five months and then it’s all cream, providing it hangs together. It’s designed for up to 100kgs of passenger carriage and to be honest I’m right on the limit, but also am trusting they built a bit of give-and take into it? Hope so. Stand aside please . . . and tally ho. Broadcaster Peter Mac is Ashburton born and bred and the afternoon host on the Hokonui Radio Network. The views expressed in this column are his and do not reflect the opinion of his employer or the Ashburton Guardian.

The need for spiritual harvesting T

he days are still warm, though beginning to shorten, and the harvest is being brought in. We have been picking plums, pears, and berries in the garden. The grain in the paddocks around the town is being carried into silos on farm or further afield. Harvest is a time of gathering in what has grown and ripened through the season. In days gone by harvest thanksgiving was a feature in many churches. Maybe it is observed less frequently now as more of us become further removed from the land. It was a time of thankful rejoicing for the year’s harvest. A well-known hymn we used to sing was “We plough the fields

Rev David Bayne

CHRISTIAN COMMENT

and scatter the good seed on the ground”. The second line reads “but it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand”. The following verses point us to the basis for all that we can do. That is – God’s provision for us. Our response then should be humble thankfulness. Another feature of harvest thanksgiving services was sharing the surplus. Produce was brought along and later shared out with others, particularly those who did not have the same access to harvest – the elderly, the infirm, and the

poor. In this way neighbours were cared for. Harvest was used by Jesus as an illustration in a number of ways. One of those was to remind us of the foolishness of relying on the physical harvest we enjoy to the detriment of our souls. Material blessings are certainly to be enjoyed, yet a focus on them alone leads not to joy but to misery. As you enjoy the harvest that comes each autumn season, I encourage you not to forget the importance of a spiritual harvest. What we sow physically leads to a physical harvest. What we sow spiritually leads to a spiritual harvest also. God is not mocked in this regard. What are you sowing in your

life? The kind of seed you sow produces the corresponding harvest. The apostle Paul speaks of the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control – a wonderful harvest. This comes from the Word of God being sown in the heart and in time it produces its harvest. Unlike sowing seed in the soil, this sowing is simply the reading and hearing of the Bible. Also unlike the physical harvest, which often requires springtime for sowing, you can sow spiritually anytime – even today. Why delay? Rev David Bayne Grace Presbyterian Church

A perfect day N

ewly-married couple Monique (nee Woods) and Kane Lawson’s wedding day couldn’t have gone better. The weather was fabulous, the bride looked gorgeous and everything ran smoothly. Flowers galore and bridesmaids in black to go with Monique’s clean black and white vision, the day was stunning and the bride was glowing, later saying it was “the best day ever”. “Our wedding day was absolutely perfect. We were so lucky to be surrounded by a team of talented vendors who I am lucky to call friends and family.” Monique was dressed by Pallas Couture in Sydney and the bridesmaids could wear anything formal they liked as long as it was black and the shoes were matching. Groom Kane’s suit was from Working Style – a smart black outfit with white shirt and a white flower as a boutonniere.

School ball checklist

f it’s nearly school ball time then you need to make sure that you are nice and prepared. There’s a lot to organise and get ready. Here’s some advice to make sure that you don’t forget anything and you’re all set for your big day: – Dress The first thing that you need to think about is what you are wearing. You need to think about what style of dress you would like and you’d need to consider this a good few weeks in advance. – Shoes The next aspect that you need to consider is your shoes. Ideally you need to pick some shoes that match your dress. – Hair You can either get your hair done by

your hairdresser or if you prefer you could do it yourself. If you decide to go to a hairdresser then remember to take pictures of any hairstyles that you like so that your hairdresser can try them out in your hair to see if you like them. – Makeup If you decide to do your own makeup then you need to get some practice in! Decide what look you are going for and then you can start practising. You need to pick a look that suits your style and outfit – either classic or more vibrant. – Accessories You need to try and pick accessories that enhance how you look but don’t overshadow what you are wearing. If you struggle to find accessories that work with your style then you could always get creative and make your own.

Allenton to carry momentum By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Allenton will be wanting to avoid a competition hangover when its players take to the park today. The team are fresh off a country cricket boil-over after they knocked the Technical Stags from their perch a fortnight ago. No doubt it would have jolted the competition leaders who

are on the cross-over side of the draw this weekend. But it will be intriguing to see how the Allenton contingent respond following the highs of their previous outing. They host Greendale today in the combined senior competition’s penultimate round, a team who have not been in action since the start of the month.

However they will be heartened by their match-up with Allenton prior to Christmas. On that occasion Greendale got home by four wickets, however they will take on a spurred Allenton team high on confidence. The hosts will look to their skipper Karmjeet Singh to lead from the front.

The wicketkeeper-batsman is the third highest scorer with the bat in the combined competition and was given the nod for Mid Canterbury’s rain-affected Hawke Cup game against Southland last weekend. Peninsula host Weedons’ Senior B team in the other game at Tai Tapu and with seven wins to its name, the home side should

go in as firm favourites. Technical take on Cheviot in the cross-over game at Brookside Park and the Hurunui club could be in for a long day as they meet a Stags outfit, stinging from their loss to Allenton. Despite last week’s loss Technical remain on top of the Combined Senior competition standings.

Blundell cruising the trail By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

I

n a short amount of time, Riley Blundell has left many a trail in his wake. The 14-year-old mountain biking talent has only been riding competitively for three years but it has not stopped him from racking up the results. Last weekend, Blundell secured an overall win in the Mt Somers Mountain Challenge’s 23km Foothills event. Riding in the junior under-18 category, Blundell finished in a time of 1hr 18mins. It was an improvement on his 1hr 22mins showing in last year’s event where he won the junior category in a sixth overall finish. Older brother Brad Blundell also finished fourth in his category in the 31km MTB Challenge event. The Blundell family appear to be naturally gifted on the bike. The younger sibling has followed in his brother’s footsteps after he won the Mt Somers Mountain Challenge’s 20km Lowland Ride on his first attempt in 2016. Riley would also transition to more competitive events having fooled around on the bike casually for about a year to that point. “Our aunty took us down the River Track,” he said. “It was just so much fun so we got into it more.” “And there’s a massive eight foot jump.” The Mid Canterbury MTB Club’s river trail loop has been known to claim the occasional injury among yong keen riders, mother Julie Srhoy said. There may be some genetic factors at play considering Blundell’s mother was a successful equestrian. Blundell would soon be a regular fixture on the South Island mountain biking circuit. After beginning in the cross-country format, he has also branched out into both downhill and endurance riding. He feels his downhillng skills have developed into a key strength as a rider. Although his preference is the downhill, Blundell is prepared to prove he is adaptable as a rider. Last year he came second in the Aoraki MTB Championships under-15 boys’ event which provided a chance for Blundell to apply his downhill prowess. He won the event the previous year. A vigorous training regime consisting of rides of up to six days per week has spurred his ascent. His two rides at Mt Somers have not been without mechanical stumbling blocks. In 2019, his chain came off his bike and his pedal came off in this year’s event. He agreed there was a lesson to be learned from both instances. “I don’t check my bike that much. “I just had to pedal harder I guess to get the win.” Next he is preparing for the South Island Schools’ MTB Championships to be held at Mt Hutt on March 27-29 and which will cover cross-country, downhill and enduro events. “That’s what I’m training for right now,” he said. Blundell is also gunning for the National MTB Championships to be held in the Northland town of Paihia in October. Although he is showing a dedication to training and doing well in events, the young rider is taking things in his stride rather than setting lofty goals. How he performs in upcoming events will offer a long-term gauge. “It depends if I get in the top three for the nationals and then I will start thinking about it more.”

Mid Canterbury teen Riley Blundell keeps going from strength-to-strength on the mountain bike and enjoyed one of his biggest successes last weekend. Adam Burns caught up with the young rider about his rise and what he has in the pipeline.

Full-on weekend for tennis

Virus forces Crusaders match move

By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

The third round of inter-club tennis kicks off today amid a chocka weekend in Ashburton. Two of the three club matchups are to be played on the respective club courts. The Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre will play host to both the two-day Junior Grade Tournament which began yesterday and today’s match-up between Fairton and Dorie. It will be business as usual for Mid Canterbury’s young club reps, radiating after their Browning Shield triumph on Sunday. Dorie and Fairton will offer an absorbing match-up with the former proving to be no easybeats. Dorie were made to work hard for their club win over Southern a fortnight ago. The performances of Rhys and Jayden Cromie should prove crucial to their club’s chances. However, they will meet a team boasting the likes of Diego Quispe-Kim, Connor Brosnahan and Jade Brosnahan and will firm as favourites. Their round 2 showdown saw Fairton hammer Dorie 8-1. In other pairings, Hampstead host Southern in what will be an intriguing battle on court. Hampstead are coming off a dominant display over a weakened Fairton and will back themselves again today, aided

by the likes of Peter Leonard, Pete Kirwan and young guns Maia Liu and Nishitha Maarka. Southen will be no pushovers and themselves have quality in their line-up which features Sam Bubb, Ollie Bubb, Gareth Evans and Jess Aldridge. Hampstead will be wary of things getting away on them af-

ter Southern dominated them on the singles court during their round two clash in December. Methven trek to Allenton to round the weekend off. Both teams will call upon their match from a fortnight ago where a modest Methven got the points. Allenton will be keen to offer some retribution but will have

to contend with the likes of Tyler Leonard and Cameron McCracken. For the neutrals, a repeat of the three-set epic on the doubles court between Allenton’s Lachlan Adam and Mattieu Lucas and Methven’s Aiden Watt and Victoria Talbot will be welcomed.

White Ferns lose last-ball thriller to India NZME The White Ferns are going to have to produce a feat they haven’t accomplished since 2017 to make the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup. A thrilling three-run defeat to India has left the Ferns in all likelihood needing to beat Australia in order to progress to the final four – a daunting task against

the world No. 1 side; a team they haven’t beaten in their last four meetings. Such a scenario assumes both teams take care of business against Bangladesh in their next encounters – the White Ferns’ showdown coming on Saturday – but if so, the final group game on Monday will decide whether the White Ferns live on at the tournament.

Their hopes of progression would have been much simpler had they chased down India’s middling 133-8 yesterday in Melbourne, but despite a scintillating final surge from Amelia Kerr, they fell just short. Needing an unlikely 34 off the last two overs, Kerr nearly produced a magical victory, hitting 18 off the penultimate over from Poonam Yadav, before a Hayley

Jensen four, three singles and a stunning Kerr scoop over third man for four left the White Ferns needing five off the final ball to win, and four for a Super Over. However, Kerr – who finished unbeaten on 34 off 19 balls – couldn’t connect off the final ball, with Pandey nailing a yorker into her pads, leaving India with a sigh of relief and the White Ferns wondering what could have been.

The Crusaders will wear the unusual title of curtain-raisers in round seven of the Super Rugby season, with their match against the Sunwolves relocated out of Japan due to concerns from the global coronavirus outbreak. The Crusaders were scheduled to meet the Japanese franchise in Tokyo on March 14, but will now play at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, prior to the Reds’ match against the Bulls. This follows the Japanese government’s decision to postpone sporting events in the country for at least the next two weeks and ongoing concerns around the world, including within Super Rugby territories, of the potential further spread of the coronavirus. The Sunwolves’ round six clash against the Brumbies, scheduled to be played in Osaka next Sunday, has also been relocated. The match will now take place at WIN Stadium in Wollongong and will be played prior to the Chiefs’ match against the Waratahs at the same venue next Friday. Addressing the situation, Super Rugby chief executive Andy Marinos said it was clear the changes needed to be made to ensure the wellbeing of players, management teams, officials and spectators. “For the integrity of the tournament we also believe relocating the matches was the right thing to do regardless of the complexities involved,” Marinos said. “Due to the fact that the Sunwolves were due in Australia for two matches following the Brumbies and Crusaders matches in Japan, the matches have been relocated to Australia. This has enabled us to create a series of double-header matches which we hope will prove popular with rugby fans in Wollongong and Brisbane. No decisions have been made at the stage in regards to the Sunwolves’ remaining four fixtures scheduled to be played in Asia.

Patrick Erin set for home-town return NZ Racing Desk Group One winner Patrick Erin has returned to the Wingatui stable of Brian and Shane Anderton, and he will resume his New Zealand career in today’s Dunedin Casino Open (1200m) on his home track. The Gallant Guru gelding began his career with 10 wins from 21 starts for the Andertons, headed by the Listed Riverton Cup (2147m) and a close fourth in the Wellington Cup (3200m). Patrick Erin was transferred into the Sydney stable of champion ex-pat Kiwi trainer Chris Waller in early 2018, and he won the Gr.1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) at Randwick in October of that year. He also finished fourth behind champion stablemate Winx in the Gr.2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) in February 2019, and collected another fourth placing behind Avilius in the Gr.3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m). Now an eight-year-old, Patrick Erin is back home and is set to have his first New Zealand start in more than two years. “It’s been really nice having him back in our stable,” Shane Anderton said. “It was a bit of a shame to see him go when he went over to Sydney, but his performances over there definitely showed that he was good

Patrick Erin will contest the Dunedin Casino Open (1200m) at Wingatui on Saturday. PHOTO WILD RANGE PHOTOGRAPHY enough to be there. We were proud of him.” three-kilogram claim of apprentice jockey The winner of 11 races and more than Rahul Beeharry will reduce his weight to 57 $775,000 in stakes, Patrick Erin has been kilograms. assigned a 60-kilogram topweight for his “The horse is really well heading into Sathomecoming run in today’s open sprint. The urday, his work has been good,” Anderton

said. “Obviously he’s going to find the 1200m much too short. He’ll get back, and hopefully he’ll be running on nicely at the end.” Patrick Erin could be in line for a return to black-type racing on April 18 at Riccarton. “At this stage we’re aiming him towards the Canterbury Gold Cup (Gr.3, 2000m),” Anderton said. “It’s under weight-for-age conditions and looks like the right sort of race to target with him. So hopefully we’ll carry on down that road after Saturday, and then we’ll just see what happens after that.” The Wingatui meeting today will also feature Patrick Erin’s full-brother and stablemate Gallant Boy, who will line up in the NIND Electrical Open (1600m). The nine-year-old has won 12 races and more than $310,000, headed by a victory in last year’s Gr.3 White Robe Lodge WFA (1600m) and two black-type placings. Gallant Boy finished sixth in an attempted defence of his White Robe Lodge crown earlier this month, six lengths behind the winner Killarney. “He’s going along pretty nicely,” Anderton said. “He’s getting a little bit older now, but still enjoying his work. “A little shower of rain might help him this weekend, just to slow down some of the others a little bit.”

Marsh planning another Derby upset NZ Racing Desk Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh is upbeat about his chances of causing another upset in the Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie today. Marsh produced Crown Prosecutor at $105 to win last year’s Derby and while Scorpz is only a

little tricky but we’re very happy with him.” Unhappy with the slow pace of the Avondale Guineas, Marsh just wants a genuine tempo for the derby to give Scorpz his best chance of success. Marsh expects Scorpz to take up a handy position under rider Danielle Johnson, giving him his best

chance to capitalise. “Generally, he puts himself somewhere there and that should mean he really gets his chance,” Marsh said. “It’s been a perfect prep for him. He won that Salver (2100m at Ellerslie in December) and then we were able to give him a nice summer break.”

Making sure your vehicle’s safe to be on W

hen it comes to making sure your vehicle is fit to be on the road, looking for a trustworthy and independent business should be at the top of your list. They don’t come more trustworthy than Flo Orlandea and his team of vehicle testers at Canterbury Vehicle Compliance Ltd, which has built up

a reputation across Canterbury for providing quality service to their loyal customer base. With decades of vehicle testing experience in the Canterbury region, the team are able to test all forms of vehicles to ensure they have their Warrant of Fitness or Certificate of Fitness. Whether they are imported vehicles

from overseas to vehicles built from scratch in New Zealand, they can test them to ensure they meet the required regulations to be on the road. Their reputation has been built on high quality work, good customer service, honesty, superior knowledge and skill. Their main business is complying fresh imports into New Zealand and recomply deregistered vehicles. Flo first started CVC on Milton Road, working on complying fresh imports and de-registered vehicles. Within a couple of months Flo opened a second site in Rangiora where he had previously worked after past clients contacted him, and at the start of 2020 CVC opened their third site on South Street in the former VTNZ South Street testing station. The site gave CVC a home of their own to carry out heavy vehicle testing, having previously rented one lane of the ACL workshop for two days a week

to service their clients’ needs. They have added their own touch to the South Street site, revamping the offices and outfitting the space with completely new equipment to carry out their work to the highest level. Vehicles now enter the site from Terrace Drive as opposed to South Street in the past. For Flo and many of his team it was coming full circle in their vehicle testing careers having worked there for VTNZ previously. With a competitive market for providing vehicle testing, Flo says it is important to offer a trustworthy and independent service so there was not the impression that a garage could fail you on a warrant of fitness so that you use them to get the vehicle fixed. If you have a freshly imported vehicle or are thinking of buying a vehicle with no registration, they can assist with the procedure. Importing a vehicle into New Zealand

the road requires relevant and up-to-date knowledge – the regulations may change over time. Any vehicle must meet the current New Zealand standard for frontal impact and emissions, and all freshly imported vehicles and lapsed registrations first registered in New Zealand on or after January 1, 1991 must be stripped back and checked. There are exemptions available for immigrant vehicles, special interest vehicles and left-hand drive special interest vehicles, which they can assist with. NZTA fees apply for all exemptions. Vehicles older than 20 years are also exempt from some regulations. Warrant of fitness services are provided by booking (for cars, bikes and heavy vehicles exempt from CoF, ie: agricultural machinery, forklifts), and they provide Certificate of Fitness checks for all vehicle classes (including passenger service vehicles and motorcycles). Balance is an aspect of fitness that is often overlooked, even by many active and motivated adults. The New Zealand Ministry of Health, however, recommends that older adults undertake balance exercises three times each week. According to Sport Canterbury strength and balance lead Rebecca Logan, “Improving balance helps us keep independent and living stronger for longer.” Falling, Logan adds, is not part of the ageing process and can be avoided. One of the best ways to help prevent falls is to add exercises into your physical activity regime that include balance as well as core and leg strengthening routines. Including these types of activities will help improve your reaction, so if you do become off balance, your increased ability to react swiftly and correct yourself will reduce the chance of a fall occurring. Having increased muscle mass will also help support your bones and joints so that if a fall does occur, you are more likely to walk away without a significant injury. Sport Canterbury’s Live Stronger for Longer project is part of a nationwide initiative supporting older adults to live independently and injury-free, in their own homes, by reducing their risk of falling. This is a collective, whole system approach, to falls prevention, encompassing in-home support, pharmacy, and community strength and balance classes. Kate Conner is a regular attendee at Evolve, an approved strength and balance class in Ashburton. “The Evolve class has definitely improved my strength and balance. The way Matt explains each exercise and the purpose of the exercise, it feels like it’s our own personal training session. If I didn’t attend the classes, I would certainly feel very stiff in a short period of time.” One of the goals of the Live Stronger for Longer project is to ensure that every person in New Zealand, aged 65 years and over, can attend a strength and balance class within their community. There are currently 15 approved strength and balance classes running weekly within the Mid–Canterbury region. Each of these classes has met nine clinical criteria, established by a technical Join an approved class near you: advisory group, to ensure they are Visit www.livestronger.org.nz effective in reducing falls risk. or phone Sport Canterbury on

BE SAFE IN YOUR HOME You don’t have to wrap yourself in cotton wool to reduce your risk of a fall, but you can make your home safer with a few adjustments. The Live Stronger for Longer website (www. livestronger.org.nz) has a Home Safety Checklist available both online and as a paper copy, which you can use to check areas in your home such as rugs, lighting, the bathroom, bedrooms, the kitchen, living room, stairs, outside and your personal safety. The Home Safety Checklist gives ideas on how to fix identified issues/hazards and includes a todo list, so you can make a note of what needs attending to. Copies of the Home Safety Checklist will be available from the Sport Canterbury Mid Canterbury stand at the Positive Ageing Expo. Call by and pick up a copy.

Simon Shuker’s Code Cracker

Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You have talents that people in your circle can’t appreciate. Furthermore, were you to delve deeper into these gifts, you and others would be lifted by your efforts. Seek the specific support you need. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): If you don’t require too much in your life, what do you need more money for? Consider what your sacrifice of time, energy and life is all about at this point. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Some won’t participate unless they are sure they can get it right. They have too much to lose. Their reputation must be upheld and protected. Then there are the players, willing to let others lead. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The thing that puzzles you makes perfect sense to another and vice versa. Knowing more only takes you so far. What helps is to feel more, or rather differently. Put yourself in the shoes of another. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): People want things. Usually, the thing they want in the beginning is just a way in. You will gain something unexpected, exciting and absolutely vital along the way. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Because you’ve a normal human brain, there are many sectors that have to communicate with one another. Sometimes, this is different voices arguing for dominance. Go with the kindest guidance. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Magical people are people who go to events without knowing anyone there, take classes out of sheer curiosity and generally dip their toes into the streams of life. You are a magical person. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It’s time to look at your scene as someone would from the outside and assess the reality of the situation. Do your systems work? Do your team members support you? How seamless is your route to success? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Rather than forcing the issue when someone asks you to take on a task, just go with it. Commit to being willing to want to and see where that leads. Resentment is useless and uncreative. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Good listeners are the best friends. You aspire to be such a person, though it won’t come very easily today. You’ll need to keep bringing your attention back to the task, which will be a noble effort. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): The test of friendship isn’t who shows up when it’s easy, convenient and public. The test of friendship is who shows up when it’s inconvenient, private and unglamorous. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): People who know how to play, take care of their own, give more than they take, tolerate more than feels comfortable, laugh when it’s not funny, love when it’s not worthy – those are the ones to cherish.

Finance wizz drawn back to Ashburton

A

shburton is the sort of place you leave and come back to. It has an attraction that draws you back whatever your age. There’s something in the expression “you can take the boy out of Ashburton but you can’t take Ashburton out of the boy.” That’s the case with Bill Calder, well almost. He was born, educated and grew up in Mid Canterbury and only left to pursue a career in banking. Now he’s back, at least in Christchurch, but he’s keen to travel those 100 kms home to family, friends and the community he embraced as a young man. Bill was born in Ashburton in 1956. He attended Hampstead School and Ashburton College. There he was remembered for his sporting ability. He was very good at athletics and impressed at rugby, representing Mid Canterbury through the age grades. But Bill had another asset. He was lead guitar in a school band with three other college students. The band, called Deep Image, played covers. They were handy with Cream but excelled with Beatles and Credence Clearwater Revival. Colleagues at the time remember Bill had great fingers on the guitar and a loyal group of fans. He also had great fingers on the calculator but that was to come later. Bill had a warm, close family upbringing. Bill’s parents, Gordon and Bertha, both worked for The Guardian. It was there they met. While work romances are discouraged, Gordon and Bertha’s flourished. Ink was in Gordon’s fingers and, a few years later, he joined Laurie Kerr to establish Calder and Kerr in Tancred Street. The Guardian played an important role in the Calder household. Gordon, Bertha, Barbara and Bill read the paper. So did Mandy, the family dog. She had close vision and was able to read it when she picked it up from the paperboy each day. Bill was a typical Ashburton teenager. When he wasn’t starring at the Showgrounds, he drove the circuit up East Street and down West. Bill fondly remembers familiar spots on the Ashburton landscape. The domain or opposite the racecourse were two, and he wasn’t alone. However Bill had a talent for banking. He worked for the CBA bank in Ashburton and, after four years, transferred to Wellington in early 1978. When the CBA morphed into Westpac, he moved to Palmerston North, back to Wellington and down to Christchurch in 1996. Forty-five years in finance gave him a comprehensive knowledge of the industry. But there was something missing in the services

provided by banks and Bill started seeking a finance and investment alternative that offered solutions to people that the banks couldn’t help with. He found it with Zagga. At first he was surprised by the name but, when it explained “why zig when you can Zagga,” he understood. It’s a New Zealand peer to peer lending and investment company that’s created a lending platform matching investors with credit worthy borrowers. It’s fully licensed and regulated by the Financial Markets Authority. Investors can earn higher returns while borrowers gain greater access and flexibility to the finance they need. It’s Zagga’s point of difference and offers a possible solution to credit worthy borrowers who aren’t able to secure finance elsewhere. In particular, Bill points out that Zagga, established in 2014, offers an alternative to people looking to borrow, including start-up businesses that lack a track record but are able to offer security. To date it’s lent about $300 million through its platforms to borrowers throughout New Zealand and Australia. Zagga has a loyal customer base but is always looking to grow. That’s where Ashburton comes in. “I’m from Mid Canterbury and aware of the depth of investment opportunities the district offers,” he says. “We’re looking for mum and dad and private investors and can offer them a much better rate than the disappointing returns they might get elsewhere.” Bill encourages people to check Zagga out at www. zagga.co.nz, ring him on 0274-780-326 or drop him an email at bill@zagga.co.nz. If you’re interested he’s planning a trip home in the next few months and would love to meet anyone interested in borrowing or investing.
