Ashburton Baptist Church senior pastor Bill Avenell is excited about returning to the pulpit on Sunday, following the easing of Level 2 restrictions. Church services nationwide will begin to come back from this weekend following the government’s announcement that gatherings up to 100 would be allowed from today midday. “We were overjoyed, because we knew the restraints were starting to come off,” Avenell said of hearing the announcement on Monday. It has been 11 weeks since he had delivered a sermon at the CBD church,
following the complex having to close its doors as the Covid-19 lockdown loomed. Avenell was additionally pleased the day of return would be Pentecost Sunday, signifying 50 days since Easter when the outpouring of the Holy Spirit took place. “What better day to come back,” Avenell said. He said congregations at the church on Cass Street could number up to 140, so it will be a case of first-in first-served for the service at 10am. The service will be shorter, there will be no gathering afterwards, and everyone will have to sign in. Family and
friend groups will be socially distanced, with the maximum number inside set at 100. However, no-one will be turned away so to speak, with some parishioners having been delegated to take individual groups back to their own homes if required, from where they will watch the service being live-streamed. Avenell said the ability to do this, and the church’s new proficiency with technology, had been one of the benefits to come from the lockdown.

Solo exhibition fills gallery By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Prolific Methven artist Joey Gerard has launched her first-ever solo exhibition. While she has painted all her life, it is only now as a great grandmother that she has revealed such a large showcase. “It’s sort of scary to put your work out there,” she said. But it felt good, and she was proud of the colourful display filling the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Methven gallery when the exhibition opened this week. Painting is something she has always loved. “If you have a paint brush in your hand, you are never bored, there’s always that next painting to do,” she said. Gerard grew up on a Windwhistle farm, and while attending Craighead School had far preferred music, art and sport to academia. In 1975 when her children were young, she gained an ICS Diploma in Oils and Watercolour. She and husband Mick farmed at the Rakaia Gorge as they raised their family of five, whereupon Gerard found herself busy with activities such as Brownies and cake decorating. Upon retirement, she took to painting once more, and joined the Ashburton Society of Arts and attended a wide range of classes. “The detail of realism appeals to me,” she

Teacher aide pay package welcomed By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
It’s taken 10 years, but finally teacher aides are moving closer to receiving a wage that recognises the value of their work, says Mid Canterbury NZEI branch chairperson Cezanne Rodgers. Yesterday, more than 22,000 teacher aides across New Zealand were offered a pay equity settlement that for some lifts their pay packet by 28 per cent. That wage increase is long overdue, Rodgers said. “And yes, it’s a really good start but I don’t want to think that’ll be it for the next 15 years. It shows there is some appreciation of what we do, but it needs to be the start, not the end.” Taken together with the living wage pay increases won during last year’s collective bargaining
round, most teacher aides will now receive pay rises of 23 to 24 per cent across this year, an increase of between $4 and $6.60 an hour. The greatest impact will be on teacher aides who had been in the industry for many years, Rodgers said. While the living wage round had boosted pay for the bulk of teacher aides who had been earning below this level, those with years in the game had still been paid at rates little above living wage level. In addition there had been few monetary incentives to undertake additional training and study courses to move up the career ladder, she said. This settlement would provide new hope for senior aides who had been stuck at one pay grade and were unable to progress,
Rodgers said. “For those on the living wage this won’t be a huge increase, but it’s made it better for moving through the steps, things have been put in place and there’s now the ability to move up to progress. There is now the possibility of a career.” Over the years Rodgers said many excellent teacher aides had been forced out of the job because they could not live on the wage offered. Add to that the uncertainty that came with year to year contracts for many and it was a difficult area to work in, she said. “Many only stay because they say they just can’t leave the kids they work with.” In Mid Canterbury about 72 per cent of more than 100 teacher aides are on the bottom pay
scale, the living wage. The next step for the industry had to be centralised funding and contracts that would provide job security, Rodgers said. Teacher aides are paid out of a school’s operations budget and that means they’re competing for pay packets out of a relatively small pot of money. If the money runs out their hours are cut. They are paid only for the hours they work, which at best could mean around 40 weeks pay a year. The school funding system was broken and it had to be fixed urgently, she said. Rodgers hopes the teacher aide pay settlement will be the catalyst for movement in the education sectors that were still at the bottom of the pay scale, such as library and office staff and science technicians.
Doors finally reopen to worshippers From P1 Throughout he had recorded his weekly sermons at home, which were then put together with other items such as music, prior to being streamed for parishioners and others. “Technology at the moment has actually been our friend,” he said. The church’s social media manager Delia Fox agreed, and said the streamed services had actually seen congregations increase, with up to more than 500 people tuning in per service. Being able to reach more Christians online was both a nationwide and global phenomenon throughout the pandemic. “Having the freedom of being able to watch from the comfort of your home, it’s less confronting than actually walking into a church building,” Fox said. “And lots of people who would otherwise be on the periphery have come forward, and it’s given them a safe place to explore what church looks like,” she said. Avenell said coming back to real-life services now seemed the right time, as New Zealand slowly climbed out of the Covid-19 danger zone. “We want to make people feel when they come here they are coming into a safe environment,” he said. Christians could be close in their fellowship and friendship, and some could have feared the risks associated with coming back any earlier. Although he did realise some churches nationwide had been critical of bars and restaurants allowed to have larger gatherings. “There was that frustration, but I can also understand the principle why they kept it restricted,” he said.

Library policy signed off By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
With the Ashburton Public Library’s collections policy up for review, Ashburton district councillor Angus McKay has questioned why that review is not used to gauge public opinion on the content of Ashburton’s new library. The collection’s policy spells out the print and digital resources the library buys, and because it is little changed from the current policy, it will not go out for public consultation. Consultation has already been undertaken on the library as part of the larger consultation process for the district’s new civic centre and library to be built in Baring Square east. At Thursday’s Covid-19 Response Committee meeting, however, McKay, raised questions over the integrity of that consultation process. “I was told by the then mayor (Donna Favel) that the consultation document was flawed and had mistakes in it, so wouldn’t it be a good idea to consult on this,” McKay said. Council strategy and policy manager Toni Durham said any suggestion that the earlier con-

was considerable input from the community on what the new library could contain, she said. Visits to Christchurch’s new library, Turanga, had also pro-
vided a great insight for council staff, councillors and the community on what a modern library should be, chief executive Hamish Riach said.

mand without plea. Interim name suppression, granted before yesterday, was continued by Judge Quentin Hicks who said the issue would have to be argued in full at the accused’s next court appearance on July 2. Tayla Alexander, 17, died and her sister Sunmara, 16, suffered critical injuries in the crash on Summit Road in Christchurch on November 27 last year. Sunmara, an Ashburton College student, died later in hospital on December 13 on her 16th birthday. She had suffered extensive
burns and the battle to save her had meant multiple amputations due to infections. Outside court, the girls’ father Jason Alexander said being in court yesterday was hard because it “brought everything back”. “I just want justice done for my two daughters and make sure this doesn’t happen again to any other family. It’s tragic. I miss them so much.” Since the tragedy, work has been done to try and improve safety on the Port Hills roads, which Alexander welcomed, although he couldn’t help feel

that his daughters had been used as “martyrs”. “This was a devastating event and a tragic reminder to all drivers of the need to drive safely and to the conditions,” said Superintendent Lane Todd, Canterbury Metro Area Commander. “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Tayla and Sunmara as they continue to grieve the loss of their loved ones.” Jason Alexander previously said his last words to his only children were: “I love you and be good.”

Owners of buildings that have or will be demolished currently have two years to rebuild before they are hit with a development contribution. If a building consent for the work is obtained from the Ashburton District Council within that time, a credit for the existing contribution applies, but it appeared not every building owner was aware of this, district councillor Diane Rawlinson told her fellow councillors at Thursday’s Covid-19 Response Committee meeting. “People are going over those two years and are then surprised when they’re hit with a bill,” she said. Councillors are currently reviewing their development contribution policy and Rawlinson suggested the time frame for a rebuild should be extended. Mayor Neil Brown agreed, saying the current time frame was too tight. A good example was the demolition of the old County Council building ahead of the construction of the council’s new civic centre and library, he said. “It’ll be close to two years before that’s up and you can go as fast as you can but some times, the time frames are just too tight.” He suggested extending the period before a new development contribution was levied should be extended out to five years. The current policy also impacts heavily on owners of earthquake damaged buildings as it states a building must have been inhabited or used for its stated purpose within the last two years. Some demolitions did not occur within that time frame, while others had been demolished but a rebuild was delayed for a range of reasons.

Prepared for return of meetings By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
After months of being online scouts, local scout groups will once again be able to meet face-to-face next week. Mania-o-roto zone Scout Leader Michelle Brown said returning to face-to-face meetings would be voluntary for all, and would need to tick off a number of boxes first. “We have a Covid checklist that will need to be completed and signed off before they can voluntarily meet face-to-face again,” she said. For a start meetings will be limited to just individual groups and there will be no zone activities held. “I don’t think there has been any real times we have had more than 100 people in a group, most of the time there is about 40 and that is on a good night,” she said. National events such as the Jamboree had been postponed for a year, with the main issue being around funding, with many fundraising activities unable to go ahead, and not a lot of funding being out in the community due to the lockdown. Both scout leaders and scouts that have compromised immune systems, underlying health conditions or those living with vulnerable people are asked to keep away for now, as are a number of the scout leaders who are aged over 70. Brown said she was anticipating many would be excited to get back to face-to-face meetings. “A lot of the leaders I’ve spoken to so far are really keen to get back to it, for a lot of them it was a struggle adapting to online scouting,” she said.

New television for St John station Training at St John’s Ashburton station has been given a technological boost thanks to the donation of a new 70 inch television from the Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club. Club president Noel Lowe said the funds had come from the club’s annual Charity Market Garage Sale which is held each year at the Ashburton Racecourse. “We were pleased to donate to such (a) worthy local cause,” he said.
“The club wishes to acknowledge Smith & Church 100% Electrical for giving their generous support to purchase a TV for a local needy cause.” Station manager Heather Keele said it will make training a lot easier being able to go online to view training methods with podcasts and the internet, providing the training essential to keep trainees and staff up-to-date on the latest equipment and methods.

Development contributions stay By sue Newman

An opportunity to scrap development contributions for new building work in Ashburton has been passed up by Ashburton’s district councillors. When they reviewed their development and financial contribution policy at yesterday’s Covid-19 Response Committee meeting, they bypassed the option of joining the 22 local authorities that do not charge development contributions. Instead options up for debate were no increase, an increase of $2500 to a maximum of $10,000 or an increase of $5000 to a maximum of $12,500. Contributions are collected for new residential or non-residential buildings or on building or resource consents for additions, alterations or changes of use for a business unit. Between 2008 and 2018 the council re-
ceived $8.883 million in revenue from development consents, an average of $807,000 per year. The bulk of this income came from residential building consents. Scrapping development consents would add 3 per cent to rates. In Canterbury Mackenzie, Waimate and Timaru district councils do not charge development contributions. Ashburton sits at the lower end of the charging range for councils with development contributions. Councillors also had the option of extending the development contributions policy to include future community assets and roading, but most thought it was one step too far. “I have no problems with development contributions, my problem is charging for something not built or planned,” councillor John Falloon said. Council staff will now prepare a draft policy with financial outcomes for each option.
How to play it safe at Alert Level 2 It’s Queen’s Birthday. Don’t forget to keep track of where you go and who you meet this long weekend. What does contact tracing mean for businesses?
What does contact tracing mean for individuals?
Contact tracing means people and businesses can be reached quickly if there is a risk of exposure to a known case of the virus.
By recording your movement when out and about, you are helping health professionals to trace your contacts faster, should you ever be exposed to COVID-19.
Businesses and organisations (except retail stores, malls, markets and takeaway shops) must keep a customer log, including date, time visited, name, email, and phone. You do not need to keep a record of a customer’s address.
Individuals should keep track of the three Ws: where you went, when you went there, and who you met.
Please note: you still need to keep a customer log, even if your customers check-in with their own app. Only share your customer log with the Ministry of Health or District Health Boards. You must keep this safe and secure for two months. Your booking system may be able to be used as your customer log if you collect the required information – for example many hairdressers and doctors’ surgeries already do this.
Socialising at Alert Level 2 From 12 noon today (Friday 29 May), you can socialise with friends and whānau in groups of up to 100 people. This includes if you’re catching up at home, or out and about. Some larger venues may need to separate each group of 100 people in defined areas. Bars and restaurants will still ask you to be seated, separated and require you to have a single server.
Keep playing it safe New Zealand Now we’re at Alert Level 2 and a bit of normality has returned to our lives, it’s easy to get complacent. Let’s lock in the gains we have already made.
Find out more about contact tracing at Covid19.govt.nz
You can do this using any method that suits you, including a range of apps, a daily diary or using notes on your phone. Businesses you visit – including bars and restaurants – will ask for your contact details. Remember to be patient when they ask you to do this. Keeping these records helps to keep everyone safe, and is a requirement of many businesses to be able to open. If you have people in your home, for example for a party or event, there is no need to record the details of those who attend, unless you do not know them and don’t have a way of contacting them. In that case, play it safe, and keep a note of their name, the date and time, and their contact details.
Keep on making the space Remember to continue to keep your distance from people you don’t know, especially in public places and out and about. This is incredibly important over the long weekend when people may be attending social gatherings, or visiting places like beaches and public parks.

Fresh fish really hits the spot W
e are most definitely on the downward slope now with this series, with only three places left to go including today’s fish shop of choice, Fresh Fish Tinwald. This is the first time we have crossed the bridge in this series, but the question is will it be worthwhile making the trip over. The impacts of Covid-19 lockdown still linger, having to wait in my car for the package with my name on it to flash up on the screen in the window, signalling it was my time to emerge from my car and collect my fried delights. Upon getting home and unwrapping the packages, with chips and hotdog kept separate from fish, it became clear that Fresh Fish Tinwald lived up to its name. The piece of fish was battered and well seasoned, with what was probably the lightest batter we have seen so far. The fish inside was clearly
Ashburton is blessed with a wide range of fish and chip shops to satisfy one of New Zealand’s favourite fast food cravings. Guardian reporter Jaime Pitt-MacKay takes on the unenviable, or enviable task of reviewing them all . . . fresh, and separated cleanly into nice chunks, with a clean taste and no overly fishy tang. The chips were some of the best seen so far, long and skinny, they were perfectly crispy on the outside, yet fluffy on the inside, and with plenty of seasoning. The hot dog was also an impressive offering, consistent in size with the other top dogs so far plus it shared the same light, crispy batter of the fish. In terms of outright quality this was the best feed so far, but was also the most expensive so far, but it was definitely value for money. If you are a person who is after the best fish possible for their fish and chips, this is the place to go.
In brief Parole denied Runaway prisoner Phillip John Smith has been denied parole. The murderer and child sex offender had a parole hearing on Monday in a fresh bid to be allowed out of prison – something family of his victims are fighting against. Smith was jailed in 1995 for 13 years for murdering the father of a 12-year-old Wellington boy he had been sexually abusing. At the time he was on bail facing child molestation charges. Monday’s parole hearing was Smith’s 12th. It will be another two years before Smith is up for parole, in April - NZME 2022.
Sentence appeal fails The former trustee of a Far North Maori trust who stole more than $1 million from it has failed to appeal against his prison sentence. Part way through a High Court trial in May, Stephen Henare pleaded guilty to five charges of theft by a person in a special relationship and one count of perverting the course of justice. He was sentenced to five years and two months’ imprisonment. Henare appealed against that term, arguing that his offending had been mischaracterised as being driven in part by a sense of - NZME self-entitlement.

Recalling the wit of former US president Ronald Reagan B oth here and in the United States there will be election campaigns this year. Let’s hope we’ll hear some witty comments like the statement made by Ronald Reagan during a televised Presidential debate against his much younger opponent Walter Mondale in 1981. Responding to a question about his age Ronald Reagan said: “I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience”. Very clever and very funny. Ironically, one of the people laughing the loudest was Walter Mondale who saw the

In one tale he spoke about an American and a Russia comparing life and freedom of speech in their respective countries. The American proudly said: “In my country I can travel to Washington, visit the White House, go into the Oval Office, look at the President, thump his desk and say Mr Reagan I don’t like the way you’re running the United States!” The Russian said: “I can do
that in my country”. “You can?” asked the American. “Yes” said the Russian. “In my country I can travel to Moscow, visit the Kremlin, go into the office of the General Secretary of the Communist Party, thump his desk and say to Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev I don’t like the way Ronald Reagan is running the United States!”. A notable win for the Mainland
I
t’s quite an achievement, but those at the heart of it will say they expected nothing less. Yesterday’s 1pm announcement from the Ministry of Health brought forth a significant milestone for one half of New Zealand with the South Island now, and hopefully not just for now, officially free of Covid-19. Ask a Mainlander their thoughts on that knock and they’ll tell you they knew we had it in us all along and that it was no surprise that those from south of the Cook Strait would lead the way for New Zealand. Liken it to one of sports greatest rivalries if you like, be it the Crusaders and the Hurricanes, the All Blacks and Wallabies or Liverpool and Manchester United – as Mainland folk – we do really enjoy getting one up on our northern counterparts. But what makes yesterday’s announcement that there are no active cases of the disease in the South Island is that by the numbers, it was the island that was struck the hardest when everything broke. Some big clusters at various places around the island saw numbers sky-rocket, so to bounce back from that and see the South Island rid of known, confirmed and active cases is something to be proud of. In some ways it makes all the effort of lockdown seem a little more worth it. If we’d gone through everything we did and come out on the other side no better off or with rapidly growing figures it might have felt like a waste of time, but we can show – because the numbers don’t lie, that the collective effort had a purpose and earned an end result. The key now, of course, is keeping it that way and ensuring the virus doesn’t raise its ugly head again on this island. Easier said than done, for sure – but if we can get to this point then there’s no reason why we can’t take it that next step further again.

The carpark test S
ome time ago I came up with a sure-fire personality test for single people. I think the time has come to let the cat out of the bag and help those people out there battling away in the dating scene. So you’ve met someone on a dating site and have been chatting to them for a while now. It’s arrived at that time to meet them in person. The very first thing you should do is suggest a trip to a shopping mall. Yes, I know we don’t have any here in Ashburton, so you’ll have to head up the road to Christchurch. You are not allowed to purchase anything at the mall, because we are all about shopping local in Ashburton. You actually don’t even have to leave your vehicle. If you are driving, you need to find an excuse to get yourself in the passenger’s seat. Perhaps once you hit the outskirts of Christchurch you could fake some sort of migraine, that’s affecting your sight. Now proceed directly to the nearest busy shopping mall. The

essential word in that last sentence is busy, because you need the car park for that mall, to be full to the brim. Here’s where the personality test begins. Sit back and observe their reactions as they circle looking for a space to appear. If you’re super lucky they will get beaten to a spot a couple of times. You need them to continue searching for the spot for at least 10 minutes for the test to be effective. If they are able to quietly drive around and not lose their cool then they are a keeper. I have included the following guidelines to make things a little easier for you. The Keeper . . . They are able to drive around, while quietly chatting to you. They are an absolute keeper, get a ring on it asap before someone else does.
The Psycho . . . They drive in total silence and even ignore your attempts to chat. Get them out of your car as soon as possible and enter into a witness protection programme before you end up in their freezer. The Normal . . . There are some hand gestures (not flipping the bird) and some mutterings under their breath. They sound reasonably normal and you can lock them in for at least two more dates. The Flip-Flopper . . . Three outbursts including F Bombs. Although they seem nice, it doesn’t take much for them to flip and turn into Damien from the Omen movie. Remove yourself from all dating sites, in fact from all social media sites full stop, just to be on the safe side. If they still track you down in the future you may also need to consider a witness protection programme as well. The Nut Job . . . Hand gestures including the bird, more than three outbursts, with F Bombs. Do whatever you can to put them off you during the rest

If you can’t get them through to a busy car park, then you need them to drive south, over the Ashburton bridge. Take your first right and head under the viaduct. There needs to be a car on the other side, waiting patiently, giving way to you. Did your date give the other car a friendly, thank you wave? Yes, I know they don’t need to and the other car was meant to give way. But if they did, I reckon they are a keeper. My wife does and I reckon she’s a keeper. ‘Scary man’ explained Jennifer Lopez has broken her silence over a mystery people have been trying to crack for over a week. Who was the creepy floating face in the background of her latest gym selfie? The 50-year-old singer appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, days after she inadvertently freaked out fans who spotted a “scary man” with his hand over his mouth lurking in the back of her Instagram photo. The star revealed it was nothing of the sort – and just a real estate agent her fiance Alex Rodriguez was talking to on Zoom on the other side of the window.
Massive protests have erupted in Minneapolis after George Floyd’s death.
■■UNITED STATES
Protests flaring up Wild protests have erupted in Minneapolis after horrific video emerged showing a white police officer kneeling on the neck of an African American man who later died. The man, George Floyd, begged to be let go during the incident, telling the officer, “I can’t breathe”, before losing consciousness. Terrified bystanders watched on, telling the officer he was bleeding from the nose and struggling. Floyd, 46, was then taken to the Hennepin County Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead shortly after. The nine-minute incident was filmed by an onlooker and shared on Facebook, and is
now the subject of an FBI investigation. The four officers involved were identified as Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J Alexander Kueng. They have all been sacked by Police Chief Medaria Arradondo. The city’s mayor, Jacob Frey, has now moved to have officer Chauvin arrested over the pinning move that killed the father-of-two. Frey called on the county’s prosecutor to arrest Chauvin, saying the kneeling move is not approved by the state licensing body. A number of high profile celebrities in the US commented on the case, including Kourt-
ney Kardashian, and Madonna, who called it, “the most sickening, heartbreaking thing I’ve seen in a long time”. Large crowds gathered at the scene of the incident at 3700 block of Chicago Ave in Minneapolis, carrying placards calling for justice. Floyd had been in police custody over a suspected “forgery in progress”, according to the Minneapolis Police Department. The hundreds of protesters marched from the site of the arrest to the Minneapolis Police Department’s 3rd Precinct building, where officers in riot gear confronted the protesters. Videos show the officers clashing with the protesters, as
they were pelted with smoke bombs and tear gas, according to CBS. Protesters poured bottles of milk over one another’s eyes to salve the noxious gas. Some protesters pelted bricks and rocks at police, while other parts of the demonstration were more peaceful, and some attended with younger children. No reports of arrests have surfaced. Floyd’s sister Bridgett Floyd said when officers called her to tell her about the incident, she thought she was dreaming. “Everything went blank,” she told ABC US yesterday. “I had a very hard time taking that, taking that in.”
Taika Waititi has had an impressive lineup of celebrities join him for a live reading of Roald Dahl’s James and The Giant Peach, and now a royal has joined in on the fun. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall joined in on the fun alongside Frozen’s Josh Gad, and Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o in the sixth episode of the series. She says she was “thrilled” to be a part of the episode. “It’s a secret weapon. Holy cats! Send a message to the Queen at once,” she reads.
Lana Del Rey hits back
■■AUSTRALIA
Kiwi charged with murder of four-year-old daughter Distraught family members have reacted to news that little Willow Dunn was allegedly left in a cot for two days after she died. The body of the Brisbane girl, 4, was discovered by police inside a house in the Brisbane suburb of Cannon Hill on Monday morning. Police allege Willow, who
Royalty joins the reading
had Down syndrome, died on Saturday and lay dead for two days before paramedics were called. Her father, New Zealander Mark James Dunn, 43, was later charged with her murder and allegedly said to police: “I’m in trouble, aren’t I?” News.com.au understands Willow’s mother Naomi died
during childbirth and that Willow temporarily lived with relatives before returning to the care of her father. She and Dunn had another child, a boy now aged 7. In February, 2013, Naomi shared a photograph of the couple’s first child. Next to it, Dunn wrote, “Love it”. In another photograph, he
commented, “My baby boy xxxx”. Willow’s half-brother shared a post on Facebook yesterday after learning of the tragic news. “Rest in Peace Willow,” he wrote. “It’s so heartbreaking things have turned out this way, but you will forever be in our hearts. Fly high with mum.”
Lana Del Rey insisted “the culture is sick right now” after backlash over her comments on equality. The ‘Born to Die’ hitmaker – who recently hit out at “the “female writers and alt-pop stars” who have accused her of “glamourising abuse” – has continued to defend her comments despite being accused of being racist for comparing herself to the likes of Ariana Grande, Cardi B, Camila Cabello and Beyonce. “I just want to remind you that in that post, my one and only personal declaration I’ve ever made – thanks for being so warm and welcoming – was about the need for fragility in the feminist movement.”

azda’s new virtual racing car, the Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Concept, will be available for download in Gran Turismo Sport this week. Jointly developed with Polyphony Digital Inc., the RX-Vision GT3 Concept is Mazda’s newest virtual race car in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation®4 driving simulation title, Gran Turismo Sport. Based on the Mazda RX-Vision Concept car that was unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, the GT3 Concept is modified in accordance with FIA GT3 race car regulations, and also complies with Gran Turismo Sport’s own regulations in its Gr.3 category. While the original cabin and doors are maintained in accordance with GT3 regulations, the front and rear track width has been expanded and wheel arch width increased. A large bonnet air outlet improves both aerodynamics and engine bay cooling,
and front and rear spoilers and a rear diffuser increase downforce. In addition, both ride height and overall vehicle height have been reduced to optimise aerodynamic performance. The removal of heavy materials and superfluous interior parts has resulted in weight reduction and a lower centre of gravity, and, equipped with a front midships-mounted, next-generation Skyactiv-R, 4-rotor 570 PS rotary engine, the car boasts an ideal 48:52 front-rear weight distribution. As with all Mazda vehicles, painstaking attention to cockpit ergonomics place an emphasis on ease of operation during a race; in particular, the steering wheel is specifically designed for improved operability under race conditions. The most successful Gran Turismo Sport players who use Mazda vehicles such as the RX-Vision GT3 Concept will have the opportunity to participate in the FIA certified Gran Turismo Championship, to be held in various locations around the world in the 2020 season.

S
ometimes one story leads to another. And that’s great. Sometimes one story will lead to more than one other story, and that’s even better! Our story published a fortnight ago has done just that. Two stories have emerged. Just to recap, our previous story arose because Pete and Valmai Whinham kindly passed in a Guardian clipping from January 1996, in which Chris Mole penned a story about Clem McLachlan and his New Pick car. Just by chance, this writer then met Chris Mole on the railway overbridge. Chris remembered the story, and reference to our meeting on the overbridge brought back a memory for Gavin Wainscott. Here, in his words, is Gavin’s memory. The story about the New Pick car, and meeting Chris Mole on the overhead railway bridge brought back to mind a humorous tale from my old uncle Joe, now long since deceased. In the late 1920s, Uncle Joe was serving as a JP in Hamilton, which in those days was a small town similar in size to what Ashburton is today. It was usual for the local Magistrate to take the weekend off and be replaced by two JPs, who attended to minor misdemeanours. Anything more serious was remanded for the attention of the Magistrate. On this particular Saturday an Irish seaman had been caught by the local constabulary quite drunk, getting into his car, and was up before Uncle Joe and his fellow JP. After hearing the evidence Uncle Joe

and his mate conferred, and whilst looking at the seaman’s record discovered that he had a previous conviction for the same offence. Now the usual fine for such a dastardly crime was five pounds, a bit more than a week’s wages in those days. So the good JPs, after further discussion, informed the guilty one that he was to be fined 10 pounds. There was a moment’s silence while the prisoner absorbed the severity of the fine, after which he raised his eyes to the ceiling of the courthouse, let out a loud whistle, and said in an equally loud voice: “Well kiss my big fat Irish word beginning with A meaning posterior”. He was quickly removed from court by an attending policeman while all in attendance tried to refrain from laughing. Then came the part about the railway bridge. After court session was finished, Uncle Joe was walking home crossing the railway bridge, when he met a cobber coming in the opposite direction with a big smile on his face. His first words were: “Well, did you do it?” Meaning, of course, did Uncle Joe follow the criminal’s instruction. Uncle Joe’s response has been left to the imagination.
It just shows how quick word goes round in a small town. The good old grapevine eh! And we think we’re the ones who invented instant communication! In his article Chris Mole mentioned others planning to go on the same rally as the late Clem McLachlan. They were all stalwarts of vintage motoring, some who sadly are no longer with us. Their vehicles, including a 1922 Cadillac, were also mentioned. Many years ago that car was owned by the late Colin and the late Joan McLaughlin, who farmed at Riverbank near Barrhill. Members of their family, including Margaret Haskett, Allan Harrison and Marion Oakden, remember the car well. It was a large touring car, with plenty of room for the entire family, and others as well. And it’s a story about a family expedition, on which they were joined by another passenger called Teddy, which has become enshrined in family folklore. Teddy was a Shetland pony of about eleven hands. Joan McLaughlin’s late sister Lillian Rouse, her late husband John and their family lived at Glenfalloch Station, and later at Lake Heron Station. Teddy had been bought by the Rouse family, and the McLaughlins said they would bring him to his new home in the high country. So Teddy hoped up into the space between the front and back seats of the Cadillac. There were extra
fold-down seats in the space occupied by Teddy, but he was quite happy to just stand there, head out the window on one side and tail out the window on the other. Teddy enjoyed the trip, which involved traversing a lengthy shingle road along which there were no less than 22 gates to pass through. McLaughlin family members remember many trips in the big Cadillac, but the one on which Teddy was a passenger was certainly one of if not the most memorable. Teddy went on to enjoy living out his days in the high country. There is another interesting connection within this story. The late Colin McLaughlin will be remembered by many as a notable trainer whose horses included the legendary Maneroo, Allan Harrison has been a very skilled reinsman and Gavin Wainscott has also trained horses – all known to one another. But little did they think they would be linked in a story involving a newspaper clipping, a railway overbridge and a pony in a Cadillac. It’s great when one story leads to other tales.

■■ SQUASH
Squash league opener at Celtic By Adam Burns
adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
One of the first outfits to resume competition sport in the region was the Celtic Squash Club, as its winter league got under way this week. The 16-week competition runs until September, capped by semi-finals and final showdowns. The first batch of week one matchups were held on Monday at the club’s Keenans Road courts. After dropping their first two fix-
tures, Team 1, comprising of Rebecca Abernethy, Craig Donaldson, Jason Feutz, Jayden Henshilwood, James McCloy and Kate Williams powered home over their Team 2 counterparts, winning 14-9. Later, the Team 3 lineup of Lee Barker, Maggie Clark, Nathan Forbes, Rob Giles, Mike Keen, and Jan Lee held off Team 8 by 12 games to 9. The remaining two duels were held on Wednesday night.

■■MOTOR RACING
Van Gisbergen, McLaughlin go door-to-door in Eseries thriller Kiwis Shane van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin have once again starred in the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries this week. Van Gisbergen topped two of the evening’s three races; the opener at Phillip Island and the feature race at Interlagos. The middle race at Interlagos, meanwhile, was won by Anton De Pasquale. The highlight was an excellent door-to-door exchange between van Gisbergen and McLaughlin in the final race. The duo fought for the lead late in the race, with van Gisbergen and his better tyres constructing a pass lasting almost five corners. While Lando Norris wasn’t able to compete in the series as a wildcard due to McLaren F1 commitments, there were a selection of other wildcards on track. James Golding was back in the series, and Super2 driver Tyler Everingham was on-track too. But perhaps the most interesting driver was Kiwi Fawzan El-Na-
bi; an iRacing pro who beat 500 other entrants to qualify. Naturally he was quick, which meant it was no surprise to see the BP Ford Mustang driver on pole for the opening 12-lap race at Phillip Island over van Gisbergen, Anton De Pasquale, Chaz Mostert, and McLaughlin. Sadly for El-Nabi he bogged the start, allowing van Gisbergen to vault away. He led Mostert, Lee Holdsworth, an impressive David Reynolds, and De Pasquale who somehow settled in the top five by the end of the lap despite two offtrack moments. El-Nabi was one of the first to stop, having dropped to outside the top 10 as a result of his start. He was followed by McLaughlin at the end of lap three, and Mostert stopped one lap later. The undercut was strong for all the early stoppers, with El-Nabi catching right up to McLaughlin and Mostert getting past van Gisbergen for the corrected lead once the Red Bull racer had stopped –
although van Gisbergen was able to get back by quickly at turn four. In a familiar scene, van Gisbergen ended up having to fend off De Pasquale in a tight final lap (the pair having dispatched Mostert). De Pasquale pushed hard with a late outside dive at turn four, but van Gisbergen was able to hold on by six tenths of a second. Mostert completed the podium. For the Interlagos opener that followed El-Nabi started second alongside pole-sitter De Pasquale, and ahead of van Gisbergen, Mostert, and McLaughlin. De Pasquale got the best start, crowding a quick-starting van Gisbergen (swapping virtual paint in the process) to hold the lead. With Mostert spinning McLaughlin at turn one (inheriting a drivethrough penalty in the process), it left El-Nabi to sit third until he stole second from van Gisbergen at Bico de Pato. Van Gisbergen stopped straight away, hoping to gain an undercut. Initially he did make a gain, tak-
ing second from El-Nabi. But, the wildcard was able to get back by van Gisbergen to take second by the end of the race as De Pasquale grabbed the win. Waters, Fabian Coulthard, Holdsworth, Scott Pye, Mostert, McLaughlin, and Jake Kostecki completed the 10. The reverse-grid 20-lap finale was led by James Courtney, Chris Pither, and Jack Smith. Surprisingly there wasn’t much chaos at turn one, but that was corrected at turns two and three. The first incident was midpack after Macauley Jones lost control on the inside grass before centre-punching a group of cars. Then, at the front, Courtney and Heimgartner came together sending the former champ into a tank-slapper – spearing into Holdsworth and a raft of others. A safety car was quickly called. When the race restarted, the two Kelly Mustangs led Kostecki, Pither, Everingham, and Smith. McLaughlin was the first of the
quick drivers in 11th, with van Gisbergen 19th. By the halfway mark, McLaughlin held first over Mostert, van Gisbergen, and Waters. With five laps to go the field had purified; McLaughlin leading van Gisbergen by 1.4 seconds (but with the latter on fresher tyres). Mostert was third ahead of Golding, Waters, and De Pasquale. Adding to the tension was the time-certain finish prompted by the early race safety car. By lap 16 van Gisbergen was glued to McLaughlin’s tail. And, in the Shell driver’s draft, he dived around the outside at turn one. The Holden ace got the over-under on McLaughlin and positioned himself on the Mustang’s inside into turn two as they ran side-by-side. McLaughlin held on on the outside, but van Gisbergen was able to snag the lead and, a few laps later, the win. Mostert took third over Golding, who managed to hold off Waters and De Pasquale.

■■RUGBY
Coronavirus Cup canned
World Rugby won’t pursue a proposal to stage an international tournament next year that could raise up to $500m for a financially beleaguered game. The Telegraph reported yesterday the idea is the brainchild of Francis Baron, a former chief executive of the England Rugby Union. The idea has been put before England bosses and World Rugby. Staged over six weeks in June and July, 16 invited teams would play 31 matches under a plan that has apparently been given the title of “Coronavirus Cup of World Rugby”. However World Rugby released a statement shutting it down. “World Rugby notes a proposal by former RFU CEO Francis Baron suggesting the organisation of a major international rugby event in the UK in 2021 to alleviate the impact of Covid-19 on global rugby,” the statement said. “World Rugby does not intend to pursue such a proposal. All stakeholders continue to progress productive discussions regarding the immediate global Covid-19 financial relief strategy and international rugby calendar optimisation, both of which will further the success of Rugby World Cup 2023 in France.”
Under Baron’s plan, all profits from the proposed 2021 tournament would have been spread around the participating unions, and a support fund started for rugby families who had lost members to Covid-19. Baron told the Telegraph: “The key will be winning the support of the southern hemisphere unions but with everyone facing horrendous financial challenges, this is a bold and ambitious plan to raise large amounts of new cash from which they will be major beneficiaries.” Baron helped England win hosting rights for the 2015 World Cup and said that tournament generated profits around $800m. “The RFU (England) should take a leadership position and propose to other major unions and World Rugby that a special oneoff tournament be held,” Baron said. “Its key selling point is that all the money raised would be for keeping the game of rugby alive around the world. “I have talked to one or two senior colleagues and they all think the country would get right behind it.” England predicts it will lose more than $200m in revenue if this year’s autumn internationals are cancelled. World Rugby has already created a $160m rescue package. The All Blacks will not be meeting the Springboks in any pseudo-World Cup next year.
Battle of the Barretts looming on Jordie’s radar It may still be a few weeks away but All Blacks and Hurricanes utility back Jordie Barrett has marked on the calendar when he will play his brother and former team-mate Beauden. The two Barretts are expected to face off in the opening weekend when rugby returns following the Covid-19 break to the season. Super Rugby Aotearoa kicks off on June 13 with the Highlanders hosting the Chiefs in Dunedin. The following day the Blues face the Hurricanes in Auckland – in what should be Beauden Barrett’s debut for his new franchise after heading north at the end of last year. Jordie already seemed to have his game face on for the clash with his older brother. “When I looked to the schedule and saw we had the Blues up there first game, I guess you couldn’t have set the scene any better,” Jordie said. Jordie could then face his other
All Blacks brother Scott a week later when the Hurricanes host the Crusaders. The Blues had a 5-2 record and sat in fourth place when the Super Rugby season was suspended in March, with the Hurricanes five points back having played one less game. The two sides met in Wellington in round six on March 7 where the Blues won 24-15. Jordie played in that defeat, however Beauden has yet to take the field in 2020. Under the Super Rugby Aotearoa structure, each side will face off twice, home and away, meaning the Blues and Hurricanes will have three shots at each other this year for their final meeting taking place on July 18. Jordie said that the Hurricanes were grateful to be back on the field as Super Rugby Aotearoa should be the first rugby competition to get under way in a post-Covid times.
“It’s been a really good week to come back into training. “There’s a good buzz in the group and everyone’s excited. I guess we’re grateful to be in a position where we can get back and train and compete again,” Jordie said. The 23-year-old, who had played 54 games for the Wellington franchise, said he’s hoping to have a bigger influence on the field across the next eight games. “For me it’s bigger picture. “I look at my game and I always think I’m taking a lot of learnings each and every time I play. “I’m always going to be learning but trying to use experiences in the past to make me a better footy player and play in those different positions. “Grow in my game to be a leader in the Hurricanes group, and try and drive us around the park and have a lot more influence on our results on the field.”
Jordie Barrett is looking forward to facing the Blues.
Support for extra time golden point
Aaron Mauger
Drawn matches in Super Rugby Aotearoa could be decided by a period of ‘golden point’ extra-time. The 10-week domestic competition involving all five New Zealand teams is set to kick off on June 13. And when it does, it may well be with the tie-breaker in place. Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger confirmed New Zealand Rugby had tabled the ‘golden point’ idea, with the coaches of all teams part of the discussion. Mauger said he was a big fan of the proposal.
“It’s a great idea. Great for the spectacle and you get a clear winner or loser. “It will come down to moments, so our ability to stay on for 80 minutes plus is going to be key.” The system would be the same as that used in rugby league’s NRL. In the event of a draw after normal time, teams get a one minute break before an extra 10 minutes of play. The first team to score points via any method in that period wins, with no points by either then resulting in a draw.
Crusaders coach Scott Robertson said the fact the competition winner would be decided on straight points, with no playoffs, meant he was behind the concept. “If there’s a number of draws, it can actually disadvantage a team quite heavily. “It brings a bit of excitement, it’s something new. “It’s a brutal competition so an extra 10 minutes is going to be more entertaining for everyone, as well as test the depth of your squad. “Yep, great call.”

■■ OPINION
Community sport heading into the unknown By Adam Burns
adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
L
ike everyone involved in community sport, a sigh of relief was expressed late Monday. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed, as agreed by cabinet, that Alert Level 2 rules around mass gatherings could be raised from 10 to 100 people from midday Friday. The announcement in effect gives the all-clear for sporting codes to progress through the remaining two phases of a periodic plan to reintroduce grassroots sport. All on for young and old right? Not quite. The phased approach adopted by virtually all team sports demonstrates a high-stakes equation informed by what we have already experienced universally as residents and key messages

distributed from those in command. There is an overarching acknowledgement that it is imperative that we get it right. It is a credit to both the (mostly) robust communication from the Government but also sporting administrators and the wider community that all codes are singing from the same song sheet. However for community sport, there is an element of flying into the unknown. Of course, there remain grey elements, symptomatic to such a complex situation.
It started when Alert Level 3 guidelines were first outlined as the very definition of “mass gathering” was met with a strong sense of ambiguity. Sport New Zealand and the Prime Minister initially stumbled their way through with varying pieces of guidance and implications for community sport resulting in clarification that team sports would have to play and train in groups no larger than 10. The limit increased to 100 on Monday, which opened the doors for sport to kick on with pre-season trainings and competition starts. Professional sport has the advantage of restarting in controlled environments with paid medical professionals at their disposal. Grassroots clubs and associations are highly reliant on volunteers. Additional logistical pressures
and scenarios are having to be worked through within fluid timeframes, planning under such an uncertain framework surely would have soaked up the hours and energy. Sport New Zealand guidelines stipulate that if physical distancing of 2m is not possible there are no more than 10 people (later to be 100) in a group and that separate groups do not mix. How that is regulated during a club rugby grudge match for example will be interesting, as will how thorough contact tracing systems are implemented at bigger venues. Having said that, the Prime Minister has consistently put the onus back on the public, an expectation that people will exercise common sense. Sport New Zealand have also advised locals to “minimise spectating” which effectively puts the
key decision making around the mass gathering logistics back on the sports and clubs themselves. It makes sense given the varied venue types and community sizes across the country, but again it adds to the workload of many tireless volunteers. By the time sport is back in full swing, the goalposts may have shifted again, whether it be mass gathering limits or, perhaps maybe even a shift down to Alert Level 1. A key talking point following conversations I have had with local administrators is that planned restarts have forced greater collaboration between codes, a sense of pitching in together during tough times indicative of the qualities which exist within the communities. At the very least, sport’s renaissance will be just reward for the countless hours of hard slog from the locals.

Warriors given a unique chance By Hamish Bidwell
A
t least the New Zealand Warriors can’t blame travel anymore. It’s amazing to think the National Rugby League season is actually re-starting this week. Beyond all the Covid-19-related hurdles that had to be cleared, in order for the competition to resume, it felt safe to assume a player would simply let the side down. One or two tried, by breaking Australia’s lockdown regulations and fibbing about it afterwards, but the path to this point has largely been without bumps. In some part, that’s due to the Warriors. No team has sacrificed more to enable the competition to go ahead, and the goodwill that’s generated should be an asset to the side. No-one expects a thing from the Warriors this season. By leaving their families behind and relocating first to Tamworth and now Gosford, they’ve earned the admiration of many a rugby league fan. While one or two players at other clubs baulked at taking flu vaccinations, the Warriors and coaching staff all took their jabs, kissed their families goodbye and set off for Australia. They didn’t whinge or drag their feet; they just accepted that these are unique and difficult circumstances and put the common good ahead of their own. That was the hard part. After all that, the footy – starting against St George Illawarra on Saturday – should be a doddle. In absolute fairness to the Warriors, having to play in Australia every other week must have its challenges.
The Warriors training at Central Coast Stadium ahead of the revamped 2020 NRL season. But, while we are being fair, it’s also not the main reason why the club have endured so many failed campaigns. Some years they’ve had the talent, but not the will. This time around they look five or six players short of a competitive outfit, but that’s no reason to assume they won’t do any good. Their situation brings to mind the Crusaders Super Rugby team of 2011, who spent that season on the road after the February earthquake that demolished Christchurch and killed 185 people. One or two shakes are enough to spook most people. Cantabrians endured thousands, dating back to the first significant earthquake in September 2010.
The Crusaders played home games as far afield as London in 2011 and finally succumbed to the Reds in the final, having flown into Brisbane from a semi-final in Cape Town. A title would have been fitting reward for a group of men who’d sacrificed so much, but coming second still doesn’t diminish the enormity of their achievement that season. The Warriors aren’t the star-studded side that the Crusaders were then, they don’t have a long-established winning culture. But what they do have is an opportunity to do something extraordinary and to turn their adverse circumstances into a unifying force. We all felt for them after their
round one loss to Newcastle. Not only had they been dusted up 20-0, but they returned to the dressing sheds to find they weren’t going home. At that stage we all feared mass deaths from the coronavirus and, in a situation where the Warriors’ players and their families were scared, the NRL effectively kept them apart. Eventually they got home and did their 14 days in quarantine. Lockdown was next and now, despite plenty of dire predictions at the time, they’re about to start playing again. The worst part for them is over. Sure, this season might have become the road trip to end all road trips, but at least the team can play without fear. People are grateful to have the
Warriors involved and, frankly, now expect nothing from them. Results, for one of the few times, really don’t matter and the players can play with the freedom that entails. It’s hard to perform when your coach and club are under constant scrutiny. Well, no-one’s going to call for Stephen Kearney’s head this year. Everyone assumes that the odds are stacked against the Warriors and that their hopes of playing finals football are remote. This is a never-to-be-repeated opportunity for the team to be based in Australia and to play without fear of criticism. To be a team – together and united – and to achieve things that no-one could have expected. What a story that would be.

TRADES, SERVICES
Warriors sign Faamausili The injury-plagued Warriors have secured the services of Roosters prop Poasa Faamausili on a monthlong loan deal. The NRL last week gave the Warriors special dispensation to take on loan players from rival clubs for four weeks, after the New Zealand club was left reeling from a series of injuries. Warriors middle forwards Leeson Ah Mau, Bunty Afoa, Jackson Frei and Jazz Tevaga are all out with injuries, leaving coach Stephen Kearney desperate for reinforcements. While the Warriors have yet to announce the deal, with paperwork still to be concluded, Roosters coach Trent Robinson confirmed the move, saying the deal benefits both clubs. “He’s an NRL player ready to play. He’s not currently in our squad and we believe it’s a benefit for us as well,” Robinson told NRL.com. “It’s hard to leave your club but it’s also he knows he’s ready to play. He knows he’s ready to play in NRL.” Faamausili, who was a Glenora Bears junior and attended Waitakere College, has played 14 first grade matches for the Roosters
Poasa Faamausili since his debut in 2018. He featured in the Roosters’ round two loss to the Sea Eagles before the suspension of the league due to the coronavirus pandemic, but was only named as the 21st player in Friday’s game against the Rabbitohs. The 24-year-old Aucklander is also the cousin of former Panthers and Kiwis brothers Tony and Frank Puletua. Speaking to the Daily Telegraph after hearing the news that Faamausili would be joining the Warriors, Frank Puletua recalled a story of his trash-talking cousin when he was younger, and a fan of the Warriors.
“I remember Tony and I played in Auckland once, and we got carved up, the Warriors were on fire that day, after the game we went to the house where all the families got together,” Puletua said. “And there was Poasa, just a young kid, and he was giving it to us, telling us our team wasn’t very good.” Faamausili will remain in the Roosters’ 21-man squad for tonight’s clash and will join the Warriors on Monday. Having seen the value of player loans during his time in the English Super League, Robinson said the Warriors’ NRL-sanctioned loan deal could lead to a transfer system in the league in the future. “I think having our best players across all teams being able to play, that’s a real benefit,” he said. “Obviously there’s different teams that go through injury crises at different times, and then to be able to share that. “It’s quite unique in New Zealand’s situation, the way that it’s all worked out. But you know I think they’ll look at this and see how it pans out, starting with Po and then possibly another player or two.”

All Blacks lock Brodie Retallick has revealed why he turned down a return to the Chiefs for next month’s Super Rugby Aotearoa competition. Retallick was among the many New Zealand players who returned home from Japan when the Top League season was cancelled due to Covid-19. The 28-year-old is contracted with New Zealand Rugby until 2023, but took a two-year sabbatical to play for the Kobelco Steelers in Japan in 2020 and 2021. Retallick’s situation is similar to other top returning players such as Ben Smith, Waisake Naholo and Ryan Crotty, all of whom are under contract overseas and would require New Zealand Super Rugby sides to cover insurance costs to enable them to suit up for the Aotearoa campaign. However, the Chiefs still did reach out to Retallick about potentially re-joining the franchise, but he instead opted for an extended break. “The Chiefs did approach me, but one of the reasons I wanted to stay [playing] in Japan and do these couple of seasons was just to have a break – a bit of time with the family with a long offseason, and give the body a bit of a break,” he said. Retallick poked fun at Chiefs coach Warren Gatland for suggesting he was spending his break on a Hawke’s Bay farm, like his international locking partner Sam Whitelock, who stayed on his family’s farm in the region before re-joining the Crusaders. “Warren Gatland chucked it out there that I wasn’t going to play Super Rugby and that I was spending some time on my Hawke’s Bay farm, but I can clarify that – I own a property in Hawke’s Bay, where we are at the moment, but it’s only about 1500 square metres, so it’s no farm, that’s for sure,” laughed Retallick. “I’m sure the footy is going to be good viewing with Super Rugby Aotearoa, it’s going to be tough, but living in the Hawke’s Bay at the moment I decided not to chuck the boots on for the Chiefs this season and just enjoy a bit of a longer break that we’ve got now.” Retallick is also open about changes to test rugby in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, saying it could be a good opportunity to trial new ideas. “I’m not sure how test rugby is going to look over the next year or so with all these restrictions and where different countries are at. “One thing that opened my eyes playing in Japan is how good a bit of a change of scenery and change in competition was - it brings some excitement and some unknown.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): What you have now is not an alliance of two parts working together but rather a blending with two parts becoming one as it happens with the joining of flames or water. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You do not go places just to be able to say you went, nor do you do things so you can tick them off your list. You bring every ounce of your attention to the current experience, inviting it to change you. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll be extremely content as you untangle a messy situation. This was caused by someone who is not as practical and detail-oriented as you. You could place blame, but you’ll give thanks instead. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): While others boast about their problem-solving abilities or humblebrag to bring attention to their luxury of options, you will stay quiet and let the work speak for itself. Not everyone will get it, only those who matter! LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Just as asking for money means you’re in need of it, when you try to conjure up a state of mind, it affirms the opposite state of mind from whence the request comes. Instead of asking, act like it’s already granted. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Everyone has faults. Confidence is not ignorance of those faults; rather, it’s the acceptance of them and the assurance that no matter what happens, you have your own back. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Remember when you let go of things beyond your grasp? It wasn’t easy or hard; it was just time. Now, it’s once again time to let go. Open up your hands. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): When you’re not sure whether to comply with what’s being asked of you, stall for time to understand the dynamics at play. Better to have a strategy than be at the whim of your reactions. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The value of money is what people say it is. It’s not exactly arbitrary. Instead, it’s a social agreement made by an entire society, or, in today’s case, between two people. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You know how to be sensitive to what others need, but when was the last time you aimed those super-sensors back to yourself? Self-care is the worthiest cause today. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): There’s a stress cycle in which you’re taking part with periods of tension followed by release. Monitor and observe yourself. Is this necessary? Is it fun? Is it good for you? PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You can close yourself off to energy or open yourself up to it at any time. Right now, you’re not sure which way you should go. Observe those already immersed in the game for clues.

AWARDS HEADING ONLINE
There might be no official ceremony, but that won’t stop Mid Canterbury sporting stars from being officially recognised at this year’s Mid Canterbury Sports Awards. Officials behind the Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and Canterbury Sports Awards were awaiting further information from the government in relation to Level 2, but this week decided that hosting an event was not viable for the 2020 editions in all
three regions. In order to ensure that maximum exposure is given to nominees and eventual winners, plans have been put in place which will see all three events becoming online, streamed events to see proper acknowledgement to those victorious. Sport Canterbury’s regional manager, Jan Cochrane, said the awards have become a permanent fixture on the annual calendar. “Each year we celebrate the
outstanding dedication of our region’s sportspeople, coaches, officials, administrators and volunteers with a series of events supported by our loyal partners and sponsors,” she said. “In Christchurch, Ashburton and Timaru, the events have become very special occasions for our sporting community – the only time each year we come together to celebrate success, from the grass roots to elite levels of performance.
“Across all categories, the nominees represent the “best of the best” – in their sport, in our community, across New Zealand, and often on top of the world.” Judging for this year’s categories in Mid Canterbury was conducted this week and the official ceremonies will be streamed by We Are Canterbury on Facebook through the Sport Canterbury channels from June 8, through to June 19 with the South Canterbury Awards first, then Mid Canterbury and fi-

nally the Canterbury awards. “Through these channels, our communities can be a part of this sporting tradition and join in a very special occasion from anywhere in the world as we announce finalists and interview winners across all categories and regions.” Profiles of this year’s nominees for the Mid Canterbury Sports Awards will appear in this weekend’s edition of the Ashburton Guardian.
