Locals involved in fatal crash Ashburton College is rallying around its students and wider school community following a fatal accident in Christchurch late on Wednesday night in which a number of pupils from the school were involved. A 17-year-old female, who the Guardian has chosen not to name out of respect, was killed in the crash on Summit Road, near the Victoria Park car park and the Dyers Pass Road intersection on Christchurch’s Port Hills around 11pm, while it is understood another three teenagers suffered critical, seri-

ous and moderate injuries. The Guardian understands that the deceased and those involved in the crash were all teenagers with connections to Ashburton College and the school’s principal, Ross Preece said that while wanting to respect the privacy of those involved, he and his staff were putting all the support structures in place they could. “We are respecting the privacy of the whanau involved in this tragic situation first and foremost,” Preece told the Guardian yesterday afternoon.

“But obviously, we are also supporting our students and a wider group of people who are directly involved too.” Preece elected not to confirm what plans they had put in place at this stage while information was still coming to hand but the situation was expected to develop over the course of the week.

Community guardians needed By Sue Newman

Finding a way to protect the Ashburton River mouth and estuary has taken many people on a long journey, a journey that still has some distance to run. However, large steps are now being taken in developing a management strategy that walks the tight-rope between protecting the environment and protecting the rights of users. As part of developing that strategy, a concept plan was prepared. It drew both criticism and accolades and a redraft of that plan has now been completed. Environment Canterbury land management and biodiversity adviser Donna Field presented the new concept plan to members of the Ashburton Water Zone committee on Tuesday and said that while the area was a very valuable bird habitat there were also a range of conflicting uses. “We’ve been through a lot of consultation to get to where we have got to now with our strategy,” she said. Currently her team was dealing with high priority activities such as erecting temporary fences around breeding colonies, undertaking predator control and pest plant eradication, Field said. “But our big problem is vehicle access, this is one of the big priorities.” The next stage was the formation of a management group that would take the lead in raising awareness within the community and become “guardians” of the area, she said. “We want to get the community involved with education and advocacy and we also want the community to come and help with projects such as fencing. We’re trying very hard to make this work, but it’s not an easy plan.” There are 78 recorded bird species using the area to nest or roost. Five of those are significantly declining in numbers and three the black stilt, black-billed gull and black fronted tern are now critically endangered. The spit is also a major resting place for shags.

A user survey of the area taken this year showed that fishing and beachcombing or walking were the major activities undertaken, followed by bird watching and whitebaiting. Zone committee member John Waugh said the area was one of very few places in New Zealand where there was that level of bird activity and range of bird species. “It’s not an ordinary, run-ofthe-mill place. Overseas this would have become an international bird sanctuary with people coming to see the bird life. It’s an amazing site and vehicles need to be kept out of there as much as possible,” she said. Reaching the point where a concept plan was on the table has taken more than 10 years since Environment Canterbury staff first convened meetings following concerns raised by the com-

munity over the future of the area. From those meetings the Ashburton/Hakatere River Mouth Action Committee was formed, Its objective was to protect and enhance the recreational and environmental values of the river mouth and estuary. The group was actively co-ordinated by ECan until early 2011 and since then there have been intermittent discussions between land managers and landowners, local residents, interest groups and the wider community. And there have been on-going concerns over the compatibility between ecological, cultural, historical and recreational values. Public meetings have been held, surveys taken and finally a development management strategy was commissioned by ECan. A discussion paper including a concept plan for the mouth was prepared and presented to land owners, stakeholders, users and the community at separate meet-

ings. Responses and reactions saw concept plan B developed. Users valued the area for fishing, walking, the opportunity to take vehicles off-road, for freedom camping and as a place where dogs could run free, but those activities were having a significant impact on nesting and feeding birds and shore birds and there was a significant sacrifice of biodiversity values, Field said. While adaptive management was already happening through signage and temporary fencing of bird breeding habitats, this was not respected by all users, she said. In its first concept plan, ECan proposed to create a wildlife sanctuary that would still allow traditional recreational activities such as fishing, whitebaiting, surf casting and public walking along the coastal area but would not allow vehicle access along the spit. Field said that this did not sit well with some recreational users

who believed access to the mouth from Ashton Beach needed to be retained for fishing, whitebaiting and hunting. Taking those concerns on board, ECan prepared concept plan B that shifted the wildlife sanctuary boundary inland to allow vehicles on a single defined track along the coastline to access the river mouth from both north and south. The plan, she said, had been prepared with care, knowing that it would have impact on some users, but it was being done for all the right reasons. “Change does take time but if you look at what’s being done, I think we’ve been careful about taking away recreational areas.” The new concept plan comes with a raft of management recommendations but the establishment of a management group that would help raise awareness in the community was top of the list, Field said.

When Santa arrives in Ashburton on Saturday, he’ll be coming on a brand new sleigh and he’ll be accompanied on his journey by 50 fairies and elves. He’ll be bringing the magic of Christmas to town as the star of this year’s Christmas parade, an event that grows every year. And this year is no exception, says organiser Carol Johns. “We’re all organised, all ready to go. This is just growing and growing and Santa is looking forward to riding on his new sleigh,” she said. That sleigh has been carefully crafted by Johns’ husband Sandy, and is being kept under wraps until the parade. “Considering the state and the size of the old one, this one’s a Rolls-Royce, it’s pretty cool,” she said. The parade will start at Mona Square and then travel down East Street to the Baring Square. It then retraces its route to return to Mona Square. The out and return route has proven to be a winner as it ensures people on both sides of the street don’t miss any of the action, Johns said. Christmas spirit to town for a number of years and said while there’s plenty of hard work in the organisation of the event, the rewards come when she looks at youngsters’ faces when they see Santa on his sleigh.

“I just love it and when I walk down the street beside the floats and look at all the kids and see their little faces ... that’s what it’s all about,” she said. Ashburton’s Santa parade will leave Mona Square at 12.30pm.

Locals involved in fatal crash From P1 The car is believed to have crashed down a bank and burst into flames shortly after the crash while members of the public, who were quickly on the scene, attempted to rescue those trapped in the crashed vehicle. Kevin Clark was driving on the Summit Road when he came across the scene of the accident. “It was just after the accident and there was a group of people looking for a knife so they could help someone trapped in the car,” he told NZME. “I had a craft knife in the back of my car. I quickly grabbed it and handed it over. “The car had gone off the road and was on fire. “People were trying to get the fire out with whatever water they could find.” Tributes began flowing for the deceased yesterday afternoon on social media describing her as an amazing young woman with plenty in front of her. Police, as of last night, had released no further information on the accident and were also yet to officially name the deceased.

Mid Canterbury school principals are welcoming a Government announcement that will see speed limits reduced around schools. Associate transport minister Julie Anne Genter announced yesterday that they would be reducing speed limits to a maximum of 40km/h around urban schools and 60km/h around rural schools. roads. “We obviously have Grahams Road on one side which runs down to Lake Hood which is a very busy road, not just with public traffic but a lot of commercial trucks as well,” he said. Genter said that on busy urban arterials and rural roads, lower speeds would primarily operate during drop-off and pick-up time only, using electronic variable speed limits signs. “On residential urban streets, permanent speed changes would be supported by street improvements like wider footpaths and raised pedestrian crossings,” she said.

Livingstone said he would be interested to see how the zones would work, and if Tinwald was defined as along an urban arterial how those drop-off and pick-up times would be defined. The school speed changes will be implemented progressively working with councils over the coming decade, and Livingstone said he hoped that they could be moved through quickly and were not something that would rely on waiting around for funding. “Drop-off times can be anywhere from 8.15 to 9 while traffic starts to build in the afternoon from 2.45,” he said.

In brief Ash River consents Of the 90 consents to take water from the Ashburton River only 10 have been granted. The remaining 80 consents are on hold while consent holders investigate other sources of water and work through the impact of the review on their consented activity. At this week’s Ashburton Water Zone Committee meeting, facilitator Dave Moore said that a small group of the outstanding consents had minor concerns and these were being worked through so a decision could be made. Of the 80 on hold, about 65 belonged to members of the Ashburton River Irrigators’ Association and had a time frame extension for 12 months. A meeting for irrigators will be held in the Greenstreet Hall on December 11.

Passion, practice and giving it their all made for some exceptional performances at the Kapa Haka Hakatere Cultural Festival on Wednesday. The Ashburton Event Centre was filled with colour and sound as a large number of local schools took part in the festival. Kapa means to stand in a row and Haka is a dance, so it follows that Kapa Haka means standing in a row performing traditional Maori dances, while singing or chanting words. In this festival the cultural aspect was not limited to indigenous New Zealand. Netherby Pacifica Group injected a Pacifica element to the festival when their group took to the stage resplendent in green lava lavas and ceremonial headdresses for the girls. Dorie School took the stage looking fantastic in their purple outfits. Their impressive six-man opening haka, led by eleven year old Jason Reign, was passionate enough to rival even the best All Black efforts. When asked if they were nervous to be on stage in front of such a large crowd, the Dorie students replies ranged between, yes I was really nervous, to a Nah, I’ve been in this festival three times before I wasn’t worried. Allenton School’s Kapa Haka Performance Group included

Canty Youth Ropu Young people aged between 14 and 24 have an opportunity to become a member of Environment Canterbury’s Youth Ropu. This group is co-ordinated by the youth engagement and education team at Environment Canterbury. Its goal is to build the relationship between the council and young people to empower each other to be good caretakers of the environment. There is one vacancy for a member from the Ashburton District. The group meets sixweekly in Christchurch, usually on a Sunday with a fortnightly, one hour online meeting.

Ashburton’s two MPs will be voting “no” in next year’s non-binding referendum on whether to legalise cannabis. Both Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon and his political opponent Jo Luxton, who is a Labour List MP based in Rangitata, are against legalisation. Despite Luxton being a member of the Government that is putting forward the referendum question, she said she was not in

favour of legalisation at all. “I feel it could be a gateway to further drug use and there are huge implications for workplace health and safety too,” Luxton said. “I am against legalisation of marijuana and wouldn’t vote in favour of it. I would be more comfortable with decriminalisation where a person would not be convicted of a crime if they had some for personal use, but I would still expect a punishment of some sort, just not conviction.

“Often people make mistakes when they are young and don’t think about repercussions in the future.” Falloon is also against legalisation, and is even against the referendum itself. “It makes no sense for the Government to push ahead with a referendum on fully legalising marijuana when New Zealand doesn’t have a roadside drug testing regime in place in the way we do for alcohol,” Falloon said. The last thing we need is more

drugged drivers on the road without an accurate way of testing for it. He was however supportive of medicinal cannabis. Meanwhile, both Falloon and Luxton said they had, once upon a time, tried cannabis themselves. “I tried it when I was younger but didn’t like it at all,” Luxton said. “I have tried cannabis, from memory it made me hungry,” Falloon said.

A 21-year-old man who went to trial earlier this year over multiple allegations of sexual assault at the Labour Party summer camp has been discharged without conviction. He reached a plea deal with the case’s prosecutors mid-trial. He pleaded guilty to two amended charges of assault under the Summary Offences Act. The assault charges were in relation to two men, while the charges against two women were dismissed. - NZME

Kevin O’Brien might have left the farm 17 years ago, he might be closer to 87 than 86 but he reckons he’s still a way off retiring from work. But one aspect of his regular work has gone – delivering firewood for St Vincent de Paul. The charity decided to call time on its firewood supply service and while O’Brien said he would have been happy to carry on until either his truck or his body stopped working, he accepts that the need is declining as more and more heat pumps are installed in homes. St Vinnies has been supplying people in need in the Ashburton District with firewood for more than 40 years, however, it’s a service that’s at the heart of the charity. The delivery of firewood to a poor man in Paris in 1833 laid the foundations on which the charity was built. His association with the organisation runs back to the day he and wife Pat moved to town after 37 years farming at Lowcliffe. He and his white truck became the firewood and furniture team, but now they’ll only be on furniture pick up and delivery duty. “We’re still getting plenty of stuff donated, people are very generous,” he said. Over the years he reckons the fire-

wood service has helped hundreds of families. At peak demand more than 20 cord of wood was delivered, but last year that had dropped to 11. “I suppose it’s an end of an era, but it’s also a sign of the times. In a way I’m a bit disappointed because that’s how St Vinnies started with a few sticks of firewood delivered to an old fella, but it’’s okay.” In supplying wood and furniture St Vinnies was giving people a hand up, an opportunity to use whatever cash they had to put food on their table, and that was often the choice clients had to make, he said. He believes demand on the services of charities such as St Vinnies will grow as more families struggle with rising living and housing costs. In the beginning Ashburton’s firewood service started with coal and over the years it has run on donations, often of complete trees. Some wood has always been purchased. Another factor in the end of the firewood service was that the team of volunteers were all getting older, O’Brien said. “Not all of our members are in a position to do the heavy work involved with the firewood operation.” Increasingly tough health and safety regulations were also making it difficult for groups of volunteers to undertake work such as cutting firewood, he said.

Council repair jobs damaged The Ashburton District Council are calling for anyone who sees people driving erratically and deliberately damaging roads to contact Police after a section of recently resurfaced road was damaged. “We were hugely disappointed to discover this morning that someone has deliberately damaged new road seal that was recently completed on the Mitcham Road/ Jamiesons Road intersection,” the council said in a Facebook post. “The burnouts have caused thousands of dollars of damage that will need to be

fixed, which is very unfair for ratepayers and our contractors.” The council is currently in the middle of its resealing programme, with several roads undergoing reseals all across the district. “You can help us to ensure these projects are completed efficiently by following the signposted 30km/h speed limit through these roadworks,” they said. “And if you see anyone driving erratically and deliberately damaging the reseals, please report it straight away to the Police.”

Authors share love of writing with students

Education key to consent compliance

Writer Eileen Merriman was at Ashburton Christian School as part of the Storylines National Story Tour visiting schools this month on the east coast of the South Island. The Storylines Children’s Literature Charitable Trust promotes awareness of the importance of reading and books for children and young adults. Merriman was joined by fellow authors Paula Green, Vasanti Unka and Philippa Werry in visiting schools in Ashburton last week. Merriman said she enjoyed sharing her passion for writing with children, and it was rewarding to see them become inspired. She talked to pupils about the techniques behind her writing, as well as the opportunities available to them for entering writing competitions.

More than 200 incidents involving contaminants in waterways or unauthorised discharge to land were responded to in the Ashburton District in the year to June 30. Of those 72 per cent related to discharge to air, with 41 per cent of those found to be fully compliant with all plan rules and regulations. The remainder were low risk incidents. The majority of those incidents were dealt with by education and advice, but three infringement notices and two abatement notices were issued. Over the same period 1111 consents in the Ashburton zone were monitored. Fifty-three per cent of those were water consents. The remainder were discharge and land use consents. While the majority were compliant, four infringement and nine abatement notices were issued. In reporting to the Ashburton Water Zone committee last week, Environment Canterbury compliance monitoring officer Nick Vernon said that education rather than enforcement was proving to be the best way to deal with non-compliance issues. But we are struggling on the water side to police everything. We just can’t look at 6500 consents so we only do a snapshot of water consents in this district,” he said. Land use consents would also be a challenge, Vernon said. One of the biggest issues with water consents was the lack of data being recorded but often that came back to the telemetry provider as much as the farmer, he said.

Firearms processes tweaked Regulations that take effect tomorrow will ensure firearms owners who have already started a specific exemptions based process for their prohibited items will continue to be legally protected after 20 December 2019. “The new regulations recognise those law abiding firearms owners that have done the right thing and started an exemption process during the amnesty and buy-back. Some of these processes – endorsement licences, modification – take time and careful consideration to complete and it’s important that these people are protected after the buy-back finishes,” New Zealand Police Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement said. “This is not an extension of the general firearms buy-back process. “Firearms owners have had

plenty of time to hand in their firearms.” The Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines, and Parts) Amendment Regulations (No. 2) 2019 extends the amnesty period to allow applicants to possess prohibited items while their applications are being processed. This applies only to applications for firearms modification, endorsements, dealer compensation, compensation for manufactured items and compensation for unique prohibited items. “We have seen thousands of applications to modify prohibited firearms for example, many being heirlooms people wish to keep in the family. Approved gunsmiths need to be able to carry out the work requested by firearms owners into the New Year,” Clement said. The new provisions only apply to items which have been noti-

fied and are progressing through the buy-back system by the close of December 20. “The new regulations reflect the original intent of the law which is to protect law-abiding firearms owners. I do need to emphasise that if you have a prohibited firearm that you aren’t claiming an exemption for you must hand it in by 20 December 2019,” he said. “It will not be good enough to have registered online or told someone in Police you have it – it must be physically handed in. If you don’t, you are committing a criminal offence punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment which will almost inevitably result in the revocation of your firearms licence.” The amendment also clarifies that: Centrefire compatible lower receivers are eligible for com-

pensation, as are corresponding upper receivers when handed in at the same time. Police may request proof of ownership or purchase before providing compensation. Specifications now apply to compensation for manufacturers who manufactured prohibited magazines and prohibited parts prior to April 12, 2019. Compensation for large quantities of prohibited parts and magazines will take into account what portion is considered more than is appropriate for personal use. An Arms (Prohibited Magazine) Order 2019 also declares drum magazines that can be attached to pistols, including currently advertised 50 round drum magazines, to be prohibited magazines. They will be eligible for buyback before December 20, 2019.

Measles epidemic worsens NZME There’s been another six deaths in Samoa’s measles epidemic, bringing the toll to 39. All but four of the deaths are children under the age of four, including the six who died in the past 24 hours. And 190 people with the disease remain in hospital, including 25 critically ill children and pregnant women. A mass vaccination campaign is under way with dozens of New Zealand and Australian nurses in Samoa to assist. Samoa’s top health official predicted on Wednesday the worst was still to come. Director General of Health, Leausa Dr Take Naseri, said more children needed to be reached. “We are still not satisfied with the coverage of the six months to the four years. We still haven’t crossed 40 per cent off that age group. “The other age groups are doing steadily, but we are still

Broadcaster/writer dies Clive James, an Australian journalist, joker and intellectual who had a long career as a writer and broadcaster in the UK, has died. He was 80. James’ representatives, United Agents, said he died at his home in Cambridge, north of London, and a private funeral was held Wednesday. James had been diagnosed with leukaemia and emphysema, and he suffered kidney failure in 2010. “I am a man who is approaching his terminus,” James said in 2012. Texas chemical plant hit by two explosions AP Two massive explosions 13 hours apart tore through a Texas chemical plant mid week, and one left three workers injured. The blasts blew out windows and doors of nearby homes and prompted a mandatory evacuation of a seven kilometre radius from the plant in Port Neches in Southeast Texas, about 129 kilometres east of Houston. Officials say they have no estimate for how long the fire will burn. The initial explosion at the TPC Group plant, which makes chemical and petroleum-based products, occurred around 1am. It sent a large plume of smoke stretching for miles and started a fire. The three workers hurt during the blast – two TPC employees and a contractor – were treated at hospitals and released. About 30 employees working at the plant at the time of the explosion were all accounted for, according to TPC. Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick, the top county official, told a Beaumont TV station

He said one worker suffered burns and the others had a broken wrist and a broken leg. Troy Monk, TPC’s director of health, safety and security said the blast occurred in an area of the plant that makes butadiene, a chemical used to make synthetic rubber and other products. The plant has 175 full-time employees and 50 contract workers. The second blast ripped

through the plant about 2pm, sending a steel reactor tower rocketing high into the air. That prompted Branick to order the mandatory evacuation. Water cannons were trained on surrounding plant works and tanks to keep them cool and avoid further explosions. At a news conference, Branick said a loss of power at the plant prevented any investigation into the cause of the explosions or how much damage was done to the facility. Likewise, he

said there was no estimate yet for the amount of damage to the surrounding neighbourhoods. Monk said TPC would form an investigation team to determine what led to the explosions. “We’re staying focused on the safety of our emergency response personnel folks in and around in the community as well as trying to protect the environment,” Monk said at a news conference. Firefighters have not been able to fully assess the damage at the plant, he said. Jefferson County Emergency Management co-ordinator Mike White told the Beaumont Enterprise that five residents were being treated for minor injuries, mostly related to shattered glass. He said state environmental officials were monitoring air quality but that no elevated chemical levels had been detected. Texas has seen multiple petrochemical industry blazes this year, including a March fire that burned for days near Houston and another that killed a worker at a plant in nearby Crosby.

Winter storms threaten US Thanksgiving plans AP After bringing havoc to the Rocky Mountains, a powerful winter storm has rolled across the American Midwest threatening to scramble Thanksgiving plans for millions of people during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.

The storm, which has been blamed for one death and hundreds of cancelled flights, pushed east into South Dakota, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. It dropped close to a foot of snow in some areas even as the system weakened and headed toward New York.

But the West was not free of heavy weather. A “bomb cyclone” caused by a rapid drop in air pressure brought snow to the mountains and wind and rain along the California and Oregon coasts. Drivers on Interstate 5, near the Oregon-California bor-

der, spent 17 hours or more in stopped traffic as blizzard conditions whirled outside. Some slept in their vehicles. “It’s one of those things, you couldn’t make it up if you tried,” National Weather Service meteorologist Brent Hewett said of back-to-back storms forming around the holiday.

Celebrity chef dies British TV chef Gary Rhodes has died at the age of 59, his family said. The celebrity chef was best known for shows like Master Chef and Hell’s Kitchen. The Michelin-starred chef also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing. His family said he died on Tuesday night. They said in a statement: “The Rhodes family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of beloved husband, father and brother, Gary Rhodes OBE. Gary passed away last evening, Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at the age of 59, with his beloved wife Jennie by his side. The family would like to thank everyone for their support and ask for privacy during this time.”

TOWING STUFF!

s we all know, Kiwis love getting away from it all as part of their annual Christmas break, often with family and caravan or trailer in tow. In preparation for the upcoming long, hot summer, Ed Finn, Holden NZ’s Corporate Affairs manager took the opportunity to partner with Jayco Caravans Auckland for an innovative towing event to showcase this quintessential Kiwi summer experience. He assembled close to $1m worth vehicles, including a variety of five large 21’ to 25’ long Jayco caravans, together with an array of Colorados and Trailblazers to tow them. Hitching up at Jayco Auckland, our convoy drove to the Shelly Beach Holiday Park, just north of Coromandel Town for an overnight experience (unfortunately just the one night). In the lead up to doing this Ed had said: “It’s all very well to talk about how good Trailblazer and Colorado are to tow with, so we thought we’d put our money where our mouth is and put these vehicles to the test as they offer the highest tow rating in the Holden range.” (3000 and 3500kg respectively). Before heading off most of those present, including yours truly, learnt a thing or two about just how much you can properly carry and tow. And that is including what exactly the 3000/3500kg tow ratings mentioned (irrespective of make or model) actually really mean. Like can you load that much weight onto a braked trailer and drive off, irrespective of how much other stuff or people are on/ in the tow vehicle?

The short answer, as shown below – is no! Lets consider why not. And also note that when preparing for any towing activity, you need to consider both the legal and other requirements that may apply. So it’s important to calculate the maximum allowable permissible weight of what you are actually towing. But to do this firstly it’s necessary to become familiar with the meanings of: (a) Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) being the maximum a vehicle can weigh. (b) Kerb Mass – the weight of an unladen vehicle but with full fuel tank. (c) Tare Mass – is still unladen, but with just 10litres of fuel. (d) Payload – the maximum a vehicle can carry.

Colorado LTZ. So with referring to the terms as above, calculations for the approximate towing amount an LTZ with its GVM of 3150kg, GCM of 6000kg and 3500kg rated towing capacity are likely to be: Kerb Mass (including weight of canopy, 2357kg bullbar, towbar,and deck-liner) People, belongings and sundry stuff on 534kg deck – say Total vehicle weight 2891kg Remaining towing capacity – 10 per cent of towball load (GVM of 3150kg - 2891kg) 259kg Which means the towing capacity in accordance with the above is 2590kg This importantly illustrates that with any similarly rated, 3500kg rated tow vehicles, this does not mean you can fill them up with people and gear, then load up to and tow up to said 3500kg, whether on a braked trailer or similarly weighted caravan. A bullbar-free Colorado LTZ with two on board together with our light carry on luggage was hitched up to the luxuriously furnished, 25 foot (7.7metre long) Jayco Silverline Outback caravan. Complete with full kitchen, impressive bathroom (with washing machine), queen

(e) Gross Combined Mass (GCM) – the maxium the tow vehicle and whats being towed can weigh in total together. (f) Towball load – proportion of trailer weight that is applied vertically to the rear of the tow vehicle. So with these in mind here’s an example of how to calculate what you should actually be towing. Of course in this case the tow vehicle is a

size bed etc, this was my overnight accommodation. Its tare mass was approximately 2700kg so was in keeping with our towing calculations. Given the sometimes gnarly sections of the road as we headed up the coast from Thames I thought that maybe the size and weight of this caravan might be a challenge for both driver and Colorado! That certainly wasn’t the case, with both coping very well and performing admirably. Needless to say full use was made of the Colorado’s 2.8-litre four-cylinder Duramax engine’s 500Nm of torque. All the other technology on board contributed to making the towing even more manageable including the limited slip diff, grade braking on down hill sections and trailer sway control. The latter, which utilises the combination of ABS, Traction Control, and braking electronics, particularly in the tighter sections helped keep the caravan under strict control. Once on the flatter straighter roads with the large van on its coil spring suspension tracking so well, one actually had to be mindful of staying within the 90kmh speed limit. Current prices for the Colorado LTZ start from $38,490, then ranging up to $51,490 for the top of the line Z71. Meanwhile the seven-seat Trailblazer LT, is $46,990, and LTZ $50,990 (all plus ORCs). If you want to go top-of-the-line for the memorable Jayco Silverline Outback, you can own this for $103,000! PS. n the trucking world, four-figure torque figures are nothing to shake a stick at, as the huge displacement turbo-diesel engines are designed to handle incredible load for prolonged periods of time. Four-figure power figures, on the other hand, are usually reserved for race cars, and SEMA builds that proudly feature Bluetooth drive shafts, and questionable fabrication work. As you would’ve seen by now, this particular truck doesn’t fall into the standard category by any means, and looks like something that’s come right out of SEMA. To build this beast that has been dubbed ‘Thor’, the chassis of a Peterbilt 359 crew cab tractor unit was stretched to a huge 44 feet.

With this custom chassis to work with, almost everything on the truck was refinished in chrome or polished aluminium, including all the underside components. Before we get into the insane power plant weighing down the front end, the custom work that has gone into the aesthetics can’t be overlooked. At the front, a huge 1933 Ford-inspired chrome grille is flanked by a set of flared fenders, and while the paint looks like it should belong in an old Overhaulin episode, it’s truly stunning. • Latest facelift Interestingly, the owner had sourced • from 15,000km a V24-71 Detroit Diesel a 92-foot boat • 2.8L Turbo Diesel before starting the build. This engine is comprised of two diesel 14-litre V12 engines mated back-to-back

with splined cranks. As a naturally aspirated 28-litre 24-cylinder engine simply wasn’t enough for a build of this size, 12 superchargers were slapped on top of the insane lump for a

total power output of just under 3500hp or 2609kW. Performance figures haven’t been discussed in the listing on the Worldwide Auctioneers website, but we can imagine that this big rig would seriously move – if it can put all that power down to the ground that is. Also, this thing would have the turning circle of a cruise ship, but that’s not the point, right? Thor’s current owner and builder has revealed that it cost $7 million to build, and considering it took a team of four people over seven years to finish it, we’re not going to dispute that figure. It will be interesting to see if that $7 million will be recouped when Thor crosses the block.

Business confidence rebounds a little By Jenny Ruth NZME

Businesses haven’t exactly snapped out of their gloom but are feeling better than they’ve been all year with farmers and retailers leading the charge, according to ANZ Bank’s latest survey. It found a net 26 per cent of businesses still expect business conditions to deteriorate in the next 12 months but that’s a good deal better than October’s reading of a net 42 per cent and September’s 54 per cent. “While still not a great level, this is the highest read in 2019,” ANZ New Zealand chief economist Sharon Zollner said. And a net 13 per cent are now expecting their own businesses will fare better over the coming year compared with last month’s net 4 per cent expecting to fare worse. That was also the strongest reading this year. In the agricultural sector, expected own activity leaped 31 points to a net 26 per cent expecting better times, its highest level since September 2017 and the highest economy-wide. “Although changes to water regulation are causing concern, the combination of a weaker New

Zealand dollar, stronger meat and dairy prices and an emissions trading scheme lifeline have seen a sharp rise in sentiment,” Zollner says. Despite the rising optimism in agriculture, it’s the only sector with a negative read on investment intentions – a net 11 per cent intend to invest less. The improvement is also despite a net 60 per cent expecting higher costs and respondents were split on whether their profitability will rise or fall. Looking for light at end of the tunnel T

ragedy in a small, tight-knit community can be found at every corner. It can be in the faces of school children as they make their way to and from school, or in the eyes of parents as they arrive to drop them off and pick them up. It can be in the mannerisms of a school teacher who’s waiting for that one student to walk through the door and announce their arrival, all the while knowing that it’s never going to happen. You’ll see it in the determination of our emergency services as they push aside their own emotions to help others deal with their own. But in a community like ours, when tragedy strikes, it tugs at the very heartstrings of everyone.

Those who know will stop and check themselves a little more often than they normally might. Their minds will wander, even if just for a moment when they remember an occasion, a moment or even something as simple as a smile. It’s moments like that which impacted on almost everyone. And they’re the moments when a community comes together. Events in Christchurch late on

Wednesday night have undoubtedly scarred a huge part of the Ashburton District and they’ll continue to do so for many days, weeks, months and even years to come. And so many will be asking how do you move forward after such a tragedy and just how do you pick life back up again and soldier on? There is no answer to those questions other than time. Not a specific amount of time either, just as much a time is needed and for no two people is it rarely ever the same. People will mourn, they’ll cry, scream and get angry wondering how and why such tragic events happen and all those around them can do is allow that time for

those emotions to flow through. Not everyone reading this today will have been directly impacted by what happened on Wednesday night, but chances are that in some way, small or otherwise, there will be an association which links everyone. For a small district, we deal with a lot of this. Perhaps, in the bigger scheme, far too much considering our size and population. But what we are good at doing is coming together as one and helping each other out. It might be an offer of support, a simple hug with a friend or loved one, or even an unknowingly powerful smile to someone as they’re walking down the street. And we should do our best

to ensure we never lose that, because it’s what makes us stand out from the others. We’re an incredibly proud district. Proud of what we do on a daily basis and proud of what we achieve. Today, and for many days to come, a huge number of us will be hurting – especially our younger community – and it’s critical that we rally around them and let them know that it’s going to be OK. You can’t change what’s happened, there’s no hiding from that fact. But you can control what happens next. And that’s the responsibility of us all. No matter how small that influence might be.

That awkward hug S

ome people love doing it, but their enthusiasm gets away on them and it ends up being a ‘bit rough’ or it lasts way too long. For some it comes very naturally and they launch straight into it without hesitation and both parties are left happy and even satisfied. A few find the idea of it weird and almost repulsive. My brother Greg is definitely in the latter camp. He’s an awkward hugger! My other brother Mark is a natural as is my best mate Cam. If I fire the mitt out for a handshake with Cam, he’ll swat that thing away and have his arms round me, before he can finish saying “bring it in man”. I’m in between. I’m better than I was. I used to be an awkward hugger. I think it was the initial, ‘should I?’ moment. What if my hug is unwanted and they think I’m creepy! The reason I’m on this train of thought is a follow up from a very busy weekend which included a trip down to Queenstown for Greg’s 50th celebrations. The three Hooper boys are not huggers of each other. But, for the rest of the family they are dished out no worries at all. I never noticed Greg’s awkwardness when hugging before but it was pointed out by his two lovely daughters in the weekend. I would like to say they pointed this out subtly but that would be

a complete lie. They ringed him out about it. In fact one of them caught one of his awkward hug moments in a photo on her phone. This photo was circulated amongst our group, resulting in roars of laughter. “It’s my birthday weekend, surely I get away without being the butt of everyone’s jokes,” Greg responded. Oh no! This was a whole new angle of attack for us. So much so that, when I was doing the rounds saying goodbye on Sunday, I warned one of the daughters that I was going in for a hug with the birthday boy. “Aw, we’re doing that are we?” he said when I approached arms outstretched. The video is priceless and both the daughters giggling at the end, finishes it beautifully. It got me to thinking – shouldn’t there be some easy to follow rules around hugging? So I’ve come up with these. The Hoops Hugging Rules The Golden Rule Nothing longer than 2.7 seconds – unless it’s your spouse or kids.

Unless it’s at a funeral or their wedding. Don’t hug your clients, unless they are like Skippy and you don’t get a choice. Cruz Bromac on a mission

Aussie superstar scratched

By Jonny Turner New Zealand Cup winner Cruz Bromac has a point to prove in the first heat of the Inter Ddominions, despite having just etched his name in to Australasian harness racing history just days ago. The All Stars pacer will begin his quest to go two places better than his third in last year’s final in the second of two first round heats at Alexandra Park series tonight. The 8-year-old’s fast finishing New Zealand Cup win and desperately unlucky third in the New Zealand Free-For-All should leave no doubt over where the horse is at physically. What space the horse’s manners are in has been the cause of much more speculation as Cruz Bromac approaches his first start on a right-handed track, after producing mid-race gallops in the races each side of his New Zealand Cup triumph. The challenge of quickly adapting to right-handed racing is one that horses with much better manners than Cruz Bromac have failed to handle before. Tonight the veteran will attempt to prove that rule does not apply to him and trainer-driver Mark Purdon is confident he can do it. “He seems to be much happier going the Auckland way around,” Purdon said. “Sometimes you just never do know how they will be in a race.” “But on his work at home he does appear to be much more comfortable this way around.” Thefixer goes in to night one of the Inter Dominions in the opposite position to his leading stablemate. There is plenty of doubt about where the horse is physically after the former New Zealand Cup winner produced two flat performances during the New Zealand Cup Carnival. Whether he is able to do that tonight will depend on what kind of run driver Natalie Rasmussen is able secure when Thefixer starts from barrier one on the second row behind Atomic Red. The New South Wales raider looks to have more than enough speed to hold the front and gift Thefixer a perfect run in the trail. However, the horse’s $18 win

odds suggest he is an easy target if any of the main contenders in the heat come looking to take the front from him. Fellow New South Wales rep and comeback star Bling It On could be one of those. That is if driver Luke McCarthy decides to press forward with the Victoria Cup winner. Bling It On’s arsenal of staying power, early and late speed mean the reinsman has plenty of options to help him negotiate the horse’s tricky barrier 7 draw. The All Stars stable also start Another Masterpiece in heat two after Ashley Locaz, Chase Auckland and Ultimate Sniper compete in heat one. After travelling well to Auckland, Purdon expects Chase

Auckland and Ultimate Sniper to continue on from their excellent last start victories at Addington last Friday night. Ashley Locaz rejoins his stablemates on the track after a minor leg issue ended his New Zealand Cup campaign. His lack of recent racing may place him slightly behind his main rivals on night one, but Purdon expects quick improvement from the 5-year-old through the series. “His work has been good, he may just need a run, but he is a horse that has raced well fresh before.” “Drawing two will be an advantage for him, I don’t know whether he would be winning, but I am sure he will go well.”

Best of the best at Alexandra Park By Michael Guerin If you are going to host an Inter Dominion trotting series you hope the best trainers in the business will turn up. This week they have. Training trotters is not for everybody, it is a game of patience, trial and error and plenty of heartbreak. But after bizarrely being canned in the 2012 series, the trotting series was reborn last year and they have provided some of the truly magical moments in Inter Dominion history. The series which starts at Alexandra Park tonight not only sees the undisputed king of Australian trotting

in Andy Gath, who trained last season’s Interdom winner Tornado Valley return to Auckland with McLovin, but has at least one rep from the most successful trotting trainers in New Zealand’s recent history. It wouldn’t be an Inter Dominion Series without some last minute controversy and it has once again materialised on the eve of Auckland’s 2019 edition. The series’ fourth favourite, McLovin, has been scratched from tonight’s first round of the Trotting Championship heats at Alexandra Park. His Victorian trainer, Andy Gath, says the son of Monarchy broke out in a fever yesterday morning. “He didn’t eat up last night and had a really high temperature this morning,” Gath told HRNZ. “So, I got him treated with medication which has ruled him out of tomorrow night.” But as of yesterday lunchtime, he was not officially ruled out of the series. Gath was holding on to hope that McLovin could re-enter the series on Tuesday for the second round of heats, something which is technically possible under the series conditions. “To be eligible to compete in the Grand Final of the Trotting Championship, horses shall start in all Qualifying Heats, unless exemption is granted by the Host Controlling Body, which shall decide upon each case according to its merits,” reads the relevant condition. The host controlling body is Harness Racing New Zealand and they are being called upon to make a determination in the next 48 hours, before Tuesday’s second round of heats are drawn up late Saturday morning. Handicapper Andrew Morris said he would be consulting with the Racing Integrity Unit and the Inter Dominion Council and a decision would be made in due course once all information had been gathered. The Inter Dominion Council includes both HRNZ’s CEO, Peter Jensen, and his Harness Racing Australia counterpart, Andrew Kelly. The Racing Integrity Unit’s Nick Ydgren said he had been contacted by Gath for clarification on withholding periods, but had not yet been notified of what specific medications were administered. Gath says there is a precedent in place, with both Sinbad Bay (1995) and Bag Limit (1987) granted permission to re-enter the series after scratching through illness. “But they were both ultimately scratched prior to racing, anyway.” Bag Limit’s scratching allowed subsequent grand final winner, My Lightning Blue, back in to the field. Auckland Trotting Club Racing Manager, Regan Cotter, believes McLovin would get zero points for Round 1, meaning even if he was allowed back in for Tuesday, he would face an uphill task to make the final. Gath just wants the option available should McLovin recover in the next 48 hours.

Dragon Leap eyes NZ Derby NZME Lance O’Sullivan has gone close to winning the Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m) in his time training, five-times producing three-year-olds to finish in the top five. The Matamata trainer reels off a list of high-class performers to have run well recently for the stable in the Ellerslie showpiece, with 2010 runner-up Corporal Jones heading the list. But despite the quality of those that have gone before, O’Sullivan says none have had superior potential to his leading candidate for this year’s Derby, Dragon Leap. The Pierro gelding created a big impression with a dazzling debut win at Te Rapa and he goes into Saturday’s Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial (1500m) as the TAB’s $3.60 favourite at just his second start. “What he did at Te Rapa didn’t surprise us,” said O’Sullivan, who trains in partnership with Andrew Scott. “He’s just a real professional. “He’s a very laid-back horse. “He does what he does in his work. “He eats and he sleeps and nothing fazes him. “He’s bred to run a trip but before we start talking about a Derby, you have to realise he’s only just won a maiden race and we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves. “But he is a big horse that looks like he’ll stay and he’s got a very good brain on him. “He works well on his own or with a mate. “He just does whatever you ask of him and adapts very quickly.” Dragon Leap will start from barrier four on Saturday with rider Craig Grylls set to be told to ride him where he lands with a view to giving him a good experience around Ellerslie for the first time. “It’s a big step up but the reason we’re going there is we’ve got to get him used to Ellerslie,” O’Sullivan said. “If he’s going to run a Derby

Jockey chasing stakes win Kozzi Asano is aiming to add another first to his breakout season this weekend. The Canterbury-based Japanese apprentice had only ridden eight winners in his career to the start of this season but since August 1, he has saluted the judge 30 times to sit in joint second place on the jockeys’ premiership alongside three-time champion Lisa Allpress, just three wins behind another former champion Sam Collett on 33. But still missing from Asano’s resume is a stakes win and he is aiming to remedy that when he reunites with this year’s Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) winner Sentimental Miss in tomorrow’s Listed Steelform Roofing Group Wanganui Cup (2040m). “That would be great. Any stakes win would be great but my aim for this season is to ride lots of winners,” Asano said. Asano, 24, has set his sights on 70 wins for the season and with a full book of nine rides at Cromwell on Sunday and five rides at Wanganui on Saturday, it’s clear he’s got good trainer support. “I never expected the start to the year I’ve had. I’ve been helped by a lot of good trainers and owners and there have been many good horses too,” he said. Having ridden the Lisa Latta-trained Sentimental Miss to a fourth placing at Awapuni earlier this month, he is confident the Reliable Man four-year-old mare can make her presence felt in the Wanganui Cup. “She finished it off strongly at Awapuni. She had a nice draw and the instructions were to use the barrier a bit,” Asano said. “She settled well and travelled really nicely. More ground at Wanganui will be helpful too.” Sentimental Miss will also be looking to continue a memorable winning run for syndicators Go Racing, whose tally of wins for November hit 10 on Wednesday with Prince Albert and Might winning at Rotorua.

All for a good cause

The competition will be serious but there’s a good cause behind the action at the Waireka Croquet Club this weekend. The club is holding its annual Canstaff Blind tournament throughout Saturday, with a big number of players coming from across the Ashburton District and also South Canterbury to compete in the event. Encapsulating both golf croquet and association croquet, earlier this week the tournament had 72 registered players set to compete across the day which begins at 9.30am. Back to defend Olympic title New Zealand sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke took a break from the 49er World Championships but they are making a comeback on home waters. Auckland will host the 2019 World Championships from December 2 and for Burling and Tuke this event is a step towards their third Olympic Games. The 2016 Olympic gold medallists won four consecutive 49er world championships titles in the lead up to the Rio Olympic Games, before they focused on a different type of sailing with stints in the America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race. But the formidable pairing are ready for their return to the top 49er competition. “Our last worlds was back in 2016, so it has been a little while but we did a lot of hard work in the 49er at the beginning of this year through the European season to get a couple of good wins at the European Championships, which was the big one out of the European season this year, and also at the Olympic test event in Japan, it’s given us a bit of confidence going into this event that we are on the right track,” Burling said.

Champion New Zealand sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke are eyeing up the Japan Olympics. Burling and Tuke finished third in the 49er Oceania Championships in Auckland on Wednesday, behind Austria’s Benjamin Bildstein and David Hussl, with Diego Botin and Iago Lopez from Spain third in a warm-up event for the World Championships.

It is rare for the New Zealand sailors to get a world regatta on home waters but Tuke said the label of favourites did not faze them. The depth of the New Zealand 49er field has increased since Burling and Tuke first became

involved in the class and Burling said the emergence of more New Zealand 49er sailors is good for the sport. “When we first started sailing the 49er we pretty much had no one, so if we wanted high level training we had to go overseas

and now we’re all pushing each other along and it is definitely raising the bar and I think the depth we’ve got in the 49er fleet at the moment is pretty incredible,” Burling said. New Zealand sailors will make up 12 boats in the 49er class at the World Championships, in an event which has attracted hundreds of sailors from around the world to compete in the 49er, 49erfx and Nacra classes. Burling and Tuke have been sailing with Team New Zealand this year in the lead up to the 2021 America’s Cup to be held in Auckland. Despite a hectic schedule, sailing both the America’s Cup boat and the 49er was beneficial heading into the world regatta, Tuke said. “It has been busy the last couple of months but we’ve enjoyed spending so much time on the harbour. “We’re pretty lucky to spend six, seven days on the water each week between both boats but now we are fully head down into this, we’re in camp and looking forward to putting in a good one next week.”

There’s not a lot of expectations, but a whole heap of hope for the two Mid Canterbury sides heading to this weekend’s South Island Regional Sevens Tournament in Timaru. The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union will be represented by both a men’s and women’s side in the tournament and the pre-tournament form book doesn’t give either side much hope with both ranked as the bottom team in their respective competitions. But that’s a tag that won’t worry either too much, expectation versus reality is a wonderful thing sometimes and there’s a strong belief in both camps they can at least be competitive with some of the biggest unions in the South Island. “There’s no hiding from the fact that it’s tough for the smaller unions at these tournaments,” Mid Canterbury Rugby boss, Ian Patterson said. “But, going there as unknowns can also work in your favour sometimes because you can surprise the odd team and that will be the hope.” Matt Winter is at the helm of the men’s side with Patterson assisting him while Nick McKain is coaching the women’s side with assistance from Stefan Brook. Patterson said the squads were selected on the already proven qualities of a number of players while the recent club sevens unearthed some new talent which has really grown over the course of the preparation process for this tournament. “We have two really good squads put together with some very good players, so it’s going to be exciting to see how they stand up in a tournament like this. “The cancellation of a number of tournaments in the lead up to this has everyone behind the eight-ball a bit, so the first couple of rounds could be interesting.” Both sides begin their compe-

Radradra rejects NRL offers to sign with Pat Lam By Liam Napier Pat Lam has secured another major coup after signing one of Europe’s most sought-after attacking talents. Fiji’s Semi Radradra has knocked back a return to the NRL in favour of signing a three-year deal to join the Bristol Bears from next season. Reports out of Sydney in recent weeks suggested the 27-year-old was ready to turn his back on rugby union but he will now move from Bordeaux to Bristol in 2020 and further strengthen Lam’s squad that already features Charles Piutau, Steven Luatua, England loose forward Nathan Hughes, Alapati Leiua and John Afoa. Radradra first switched from the Parramatta Eels in 2016 to join Toulon and has since been a revelation

in the French Top 14. “There’s no doubt Semi is one of the best players in the world – a world-class performer,” Lam, Bristol’s director of rugby, said. Radradra scored two tries and beat 29 defenders, more than anyone else, in four appearances for Fiji at the World Cup in Japan. Whether playing centre or on the wing, he is considered one of Europe’s most lethal attacking threats. “I’m looking forward to coming to the Premiership and playing under Pat Lam at Bristol,” Radradra said. “They’re one of the most exciting teams in Europe right now and the way they are doing things is making everybody take notice.” Lam signed a four-year extension with Bristol in May through to 2023

and is steadily building his vision for the Bears, just as he did at Connacht previously. After four rounds of the Premiership this season Bristol are joint leaders with Chris Boyd’s Northampton following three early wins each. Bristol and Lam, backed by wealthy owner Steve Lansdown, have clearly signalled their intent with Radradra’s acquisition. “Every top club across both codes on the planet wanted him,” Lam said. “So for Bristol to be able to bring in a player of his quality underlines the fantastic work that the club is doing. “Semi has clarity about our vision and knows what the club want to achieve. “As a person and a player he’s perfect for our culture.” Semi Radradra is a superstar of both rugby codes.

Mitchell Black Caps bolter By Niall Anderson Daryl Mitchell will make his test debut against England – but Lockie Ferguson will have to wait until this morning to know whether he’ll be joining him. The Black Caps yesterday confirmed that Mitchell will replace Colin de Grandhomme in the New Zealand side for the second test at Hamilton’s Seddon Park, after de Grandhomme was ruled out with an abdominal tear. He could be joined in making his test debut by Ferguson, but a decision on which fast bowler will replace the also-injured Trent Boult will wait until the morning of the test, with either Ferguson or Matt Henry to get the nod. Somewhat of a surprise call-up

to the test squad, Mitchell will slot in as a like-for-like replacement for de Grandhomme as a seam bowling all-rounder, with the Hamiltonian to make his debut on his home ground. The 28-year-old averages 35.6 with the bat in first-class cricket, and 33.5 with the ball, having taken 61 first-class wickets with his medium-pace offerings – though he is a different style of bowler than de Grandhomme, generating less swing, but more bounce. Mitchell has international experience, having played nine Twenty20s for the Black Caps, and batsman Ross Taylor is looking forward to seeing how he will fare in the longest format. “Exciting times for him – obviously in Colin de Grandhomme

he has some big shoes to fill but he’s had some experience at Twenty20 level and has had a very good campaign around the first-class scene, so looking forward to seeing how he goes.” The Black Caps are waiting until they can view the wicket this morning before making their other selection call – wanting to see whether the conditions will be more suited to Ferguson’s express pace, or Henry’s swing. “We’ll make the decision tomorrow – the wicket is drying out, it’s changed a lot since we’ve been here, so it’ll be interesting with the overhead conditions in the morning,” said Taylor. “They’re slightly different bowlers but both have their strengths, and have big shoes to

fill again with Trent, but I’m sure they’ll do well. “Lockie has that extra pace but Henry with that new ball has been very effective – the last time we played here against South Africa he had a lot of success, but we’ll have to wait and see what we perceive the wicket to be doing and then make that call.” Both Ferguson and Henry have the resume to justify being handed the new ball, and Taylor says having such depth is a strong sign. “It’s definitely the best it’s been in my career – when I started out, when we had a guy on debut you hoped the player would do well, and I think now we expect the player to do well. “That’s a good place to be.”

England cricketer Ben Stokes described the test side’s captaincy as one of the most criticised roles and said the team had shared the responsibility for their heavy defeat by New Zealand in the opening test. England were beaten by an innings and 65 runs at Mount Maunganui on Monday as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the two match series. “The pressures of being England test captain are huge. “It can be one of the most criticised jobs in England ... sometimes unfairly,” all-rounder Stokes said. “There are 11 guys on the field that contribute to a win or loss. “It doesn’t all fall on the captain.” Root’s form has also come under scrutiny since he was named fulltime test skipper in 2017 and the 28-year-old, who has not scored a century since February, said the pressure of captaincy was not an excuse for his batting woes. “He’s England’s best player and he knows he has got the full support of us in the changing room,” Stokes added. “We put our hands up as players when we don’t perform as well and unfortunately Joe cops most of that. “But as a playing group, we stick together and we hold our hands up together.” Stokes said England would not be distracted by the departure of coach Chris Silverwood, who will return home after day two of the second test starting on Friday, due to a family bereavement. “Family always comes first, no matter where you are in the world or a situation a team finds itself in,” Stokes added. “We do all the tactical analysis so, once we get going, the onus will be on the players. “Chris going home won’t be a distraction to us.”

Pakistan rings the changes for pink-ball test The addition of opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq and pace bowler Mohammad Abbas are two changes being considered by Pakistan for the day-night test against Australia beginning today at the Adelaide Oval. Imam, a 23-year-old opening batsman, said on Wednesday he was preparing to play but was still unsure if he’ll be required for the second test. Australia won the first test by an innings and five runs at the Gabba in Brisbane. Pakistan is also tipped to recall

Abbas, possibly at the expense of Imran Khan. Abbas, who did not play in the first test for Pakistan, took 17 wickets at an average of 10.58 the last time he played against Australia in the United Arab Emirates. Australia captain Tim Paine said he was surprised when Abbas was left out, but Pakistan said his recent lack of pace was the reason. Australia scored 580 runs in the Brisbane test. “Mohammad Abbas is always a very tough competitor and he’s a

very class act,” Imam said. “His performances and his stats show that ... he’s difficult to judge off the pitch because his ball nips around, especially the new ball. “And with a pink ball under lights (he) will be difficult.” The potential inclusion of Imam, who averages 28.41 in his 10 tests, would prompt a reshuffle in the batting order. Imam has been suggested as a replacement for Haris Sohail, who was dismissed twice – caught behind from Mitchell Starc’s bowling –

for scores of one and eight. Azhar Ali would likely shift from opener to No. 3 if Imam is recalled. Australia coach Justin Langer, meanwhile, said it’s unlikely that there’ll be any changes to his side. “The boys all played well (in Brisbane), they had a day off having finished in four days,” Langer said. “We haven’t had a look at the wicket yet ... but my gut feel is we’ll probably go with the same XI.”

DEATHS WITHELL, Audrey Ann (nee Donohue) – Peacefully at Rosebank Rest Home Ashburton, on November 27, 2019, in her 91st year. Loved wife of the late Neville. Loved mother and mother-in-law of Rodger (deceased) and Pauline, Nigel and Margaret (Manawatu). Much loved Gran of Michelle and Brad (Seddon) and Great gran of Zoe and Harrison. Many thanks to the staff of Rosebank and Dr Penny Holdaway for their care of Audrey. Messages to the Withell family, c/- PO Box 472, Ashburton 7740. A service to celebrate Audrey’s life will be held at St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Park Street, Ashburton on TUESDAY, December 3, commencing at 2.00pm. Followed by private cremation at the Ashburton Crematorium.

CABOUT, Marius – Peacefully at home, on November 28, 2019. In his 92nd year. Loved husband of Jean for 61 years. Sometimes you need to put a new idea out there and see if it flies and that’s exactly what the team at Ashburton Speedway are doing this weekend. On Sunday they hold their annual Christmas Championships along with all their usual bells and whistles. But they’ve added a new event to the schedule, one which might entice a few of the older brigade

to dust off the driving gloves and get back in on the action. Dubbed the Golden Oldies Stockcars, the new look event is open for drivers over the age of 40 and speedway president Graham Ackroyd is hoping it’s well supported. “We don’t really know how it will go, or how many will line up in it,” he said. “But the hope is that there’s a few out there who are interested and throw their name into the

ring and it becomes a really good competition.” While the Golden Oldies appearance will be a highlight, Ackroyd said it would be hard to top the usual demolition derby in terms of crowd popularity. “It’s always a bit of a favourite with those who come along.” Also in action will be all the usual classes; adult and youth mini stocks, stock cars, street stocks, side chairs, C Grade, saloons and production cars.

With points up for offer in the season competitions, it will be every driver for themselves out on the track as the 2019 calendar year of racing at the speedway wraps up. “There’s a bit of interest in the points at the moment and everything this weekend counts too.” Ackroyd said that Sunday’s racing would see competitors coming from all over Canterbury to compete and he’d had some new

interest this week from some Dunedin drivers. “They’ve never been here before, but want to come and give the saloons a bit of a spin, which is great news.” Spectators are encouraged to get down and check out the racing action on Sunday with racing under way from 12.30pm. Entry is $15 for adults, $10 for gold card members and children under the age of 14 are free when accompanied by a paying adult.
