Land purchase secures future for sports campus By Sue Newman

A land purchase on the Lake Hood Terrace has secured the future of Ashburton’s High Performance Sports Campus. The project, launched by Southern Parallel Sports Campus, is on target for construction work to begin early next year after an unconditional real estate purchase agreement was finalised for the purchase of property bordering the Lake Hood Aquatic Park. The site was selected to ensure the campus does not impact on Lake Hood residents, but rather, will provide significant benefit and deliver opportunities to that community, project director Catherine Stuart said. Warren and Mahoney have been appointed to design the campus and will ensure the design fits within the council residential consents already secured on the campus site. It was an exciting project and innovative design would ensure it was a world class facility, director Jonathon Coote said. Inovo Projects have been appointed to manage the project. The Inovo team will be led by Dave Lang. Inovo, supported by Tonkin & Taylor and a team of specialists, have begun the first phase of the project to secure the required consents in co-operation with the Ashburton District Council. “Invo is delighted to have the opportunity to bring our expertise to this project. We understand the vital role the facility will serve for the sporting community and look forward to playing our part in delivering this exciting development, director Dave Lang said. As part of the consent pro-

cess, SPSC and Inovo will hold a public meeting in Ashburton to ensure people have a complete understanding of the campus, the project timelines and the benefits it will bring to the wider Ashburton community. Inovo will work alongside the project director to scope, cost, plan and engage services and suppliers to undertake the construction of the campus, planned for commencement early 2021. SPSC is engaged in negotiations with residential property developers to finalise a partnership agreement for the construction of the campus’ residential homes, with construction also planned to start early next year. In keeping with the ethos of the project, SPSC is in negotiations to enter into a joint venture with the Natural Energy Group who represent France based, Ennesys Bio Energy Systems to establish zero carbon solutions, ensuring the campus becomes a beacon in environmental standards and supports the aim for a fully holistic world class campus.
As part of the overall project plan the SPSC team is engaged with key New Zealand education, health services and hospitality entities in partnership negotiations to support the SPSC programmes and services. The partnerships will be announced as each agreement is secured. In announcing the major steps forward for the project Stuart said that opportunities still existed for Kiwis investors. “It would be a dream come true to have the project fully Kiwi invested; welcoming international participants in true Kiwi style hospitality.” She went on to say; “In achieving this goal, it would enable the agreed international partner funds to be utilised for long term project sustainability; with the committed grants being allocated to fund programmes for wounded veterans, para sports athletes and youth sport wishing to attend SPSC programmes.” There are well over 1.5 million wounded veterans within the Coalition Forces with each deserving of support by providing
the opportunity for a brighter and more positive future, which SPSC and partners aim to deliver, Stuart said. The proposed Southern Parallel Sports Campus model differs greatly from other high performance sports campuses, with SPSC focus on programmes combining New Zealand and international high performance athletes, para sports athletes and wounded veterans. “This has been recognised, welcomed and embraced by USA, UK and Asia Pacific partners as a world first in combining individuals from differing sectors and regions, all focused on the same goal,” she said. The campus will provide access to a fully inclusive programme with supporting services and the inclusion of sponsored academic and entrepreneurial courses for participants. The SPSC team will work alongside each programme participant to develop a foundation for a more positive future, enabling each to go on to support their families and loved ones.

Mardi gras hailed a success By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
The inaugural Mid Town Mardi Gras is being hailed a success and organiser Carol Johns is already looking into running it again next year. Johns had organised the event on East Street after the Ashburton Retailers Association cancelled the annual Boulevard Day to make the most of the opportunity of South Canterbury Anniversary Day doubling up with the school holidays, the first time in many years. The one thing that was out of Johns’ control was the weather, and after a bright start to the day it had packed in right around the anticipated busiest time of the day – the lunchtime rush. “It only rained for 20 minutes and then it was a beautiful afternoon,” Johns said. “Things cleared out for a bit but within half an hour the street filled up again. “We lost a few stallholders due to the rain here, but also some that were from Invercargill and were
concerned about getting home as it was snowing down south. “We lost maybe 10 or so which wasn’t bad, but then it cleared up and the ones that stayed traded right through until 4.45pm.” One stallholder had packed up and went away to have lunch Johns said, only to see the weather clear and return to East Street to set up again. “And she was still there at 4.30pm selling.”
The New Zealand Army Band were the stars of the day, providing the atmosphere with their upbeat roving performances. “They made a huge impact on the day and it was great to have them.” Johns had also received some feedback from other retailers in the central business district that had enjoyed a bumper day as well. “It’s not just the people up the street, the event brings people
It’s not just the people up the street, the event brings people into town. – Carol Johns For many of the stallholders, it was their first event since March. “They were just happy to be out and trading again after losing so many events.” “Even though things were looking a bit dodgy they still came and enjoyed a great day.”
into town.” After a successful day, Johns said she is already looking at holding her event again next year. In 2019, Johns had applied to run an event on the same day as Boulevard Day. Following a ratepayer-funded
Charlotte Wood, 12 (left) Lennox Officer, 11 and Eleanor Ross, 12. hearing, the Ashburton District Council upheld the application for the Ashburton Retailers Association to close East Street for the annual Boulevard Day, and not Johns’ event. After Boulevard Day was cancelled back in June, due to concerns around Covid-19, Johns jumped at the opportunity to fill the void and has been back to the council to see what has been put in place around the ability to run two events. Johns said there were options
such as alternate venue or date for her event, but it comes down to sourcing stallholders. “These people have a pretty full-on calendar so if you pick a day that doesn’t work for them or clashes with another one you miss out. “That’s why this date has always worked. “If you take it away from [East Street] you take it away from the local retailers. “Let’s just see what next year brings.”

Freda takes her 100th in her stride By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
At 65 most people are thinking about retiring, but for Freda Green, hitting that age meant taking on a new challenge – learning to drive. The sprightly 100 year old decided at 65 that she’d had enough of walking everywhere, took driving lessons, passed her test first time out and bought herself a new car. She was well into her 90s when she knew the time had come to go back to being a passenger, but it’s important to know when to call it quits, she said. “I really enjoyed driving but the time came when I had to give it up.” Today she might not be driving any more but she’s hale, healthy and yesterday celebrated her 100th birthday. The seventh child of Barton and Elizabeth Osborne’s family of nine, Freda said they were a happy family, one where there was no spoiling and children did as they were told. Her dad worked at the Farmers Co-op when it was based on West Street and her mum had her hands

All nine candidates to attend Meet the Candidates evening By Susan Sandys susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Rotary Club of Ashburton members are ecstatic to have secured all nine Rangitata electorate candidates as they gear up for tonight’s Meet the Candidates. It will begin at 7pm at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, with doors opening at 6.30pm and names drawn on stage for speaking order at 6.50pm. There are 494 seats in the centre’s auditorium, and organisers are hoping they will fill every single one. Candidates to address the crowd will include just one MP – Labour’s Jo Luxton, a List MP based in Rangitata. Other candidates include National’s Megan Hands, who replaced former Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon as the electorate candidate. Luxton and Hands will address the crowd alongside their fellow Rangitata candidates of Hamish Hutton for ACT, Gerrie Ligtenberg for the Greens, Lachie Ashton for New Conservative, Brannon Favel for Social Credit, Grant William Kelynack for NZ Outdoors Party, James

potential suitors, but it was George Green who caught her eye. “He was in a group at my sister’s one day and it wasn’t long before he decided to walk me home. It was close to love at first sight,” she said. Marriage brought a move to Hororata and rural life. The couple’s two children, Bryan and Alison, were born during those years, but in 1958 the family decided to move back to Ashburton, a move welcomed by Freda. “I was glad to be back in Ashburton because all my family was there and during the war years there wasn’t a lot of petrol available so we couldn’t get about so we didn’t come back here very often.” The Green family settled in Charles Street, with George building a home at the front of their large section. He worked as a carpenter but he and Freda spent many hours in their large garden, selling peas and potatoes at the gate, later expanding their offerings to include berries. They subdivided their section and built a new home at the rear, the property that Freda continued to live in after George’s death in 1987 and until her move to Radius
Rae for NAP and Aroha Maru for Advance NZ. South Canterbury grandmother Maru is the latest addition. Advance NZ is an alliance of several minor parties with Jami Lee Ross and Billy Te Kahika as its co-leaders. Each candidate will be allowed to speak for seven minutes to address the audience. After each address there will be three minutes for questions to that candidate from the floor, and at the end of all the speeches there will be 30 minutes where the floor is opened up for questions. Rotary Club of Ashburton is the sole organiser and sponsor, and spokesperson Peter Stechman said it was fantastic to have been able to secure all nine candidates. He had learnt of the latest addition only last week when the electorate list was officially released. He urged members of the public to make the most of the one-off event of a Mid Canterbury candidates’ evening, reminding people they could tape the televised leaders’ debate on the same night. “And we have nine people, there’s only two on TV,” he said.
Millstream three and a half years ago. While she didn’t return to the paid workforce once married, Freda put in many years as a volunteer at Ashburton Hospital. “I used to go in and do the morning tea and lunch and I used to go to the lounge and help feed the patients,” she said. One of the greatest joys of her life was music and she spent many years as part of the RSA entertainment group and was a founding member of the St David’s church choir. “I don’t sing now. I used to do this (entertain) every Friday, but I started finding it a bit hard to hit the high notes so I thought, it’s time to give up.” Over the past few years Freda has had a couple of bouts of ill health and during her second stay in hospital her doctor suggested she might need to go into care. “When I was told, it was a bit of a shock, but I just accepted it,” she said. Yesterday she celebrated her milestone birthday with friends and many family members.including her children and some of her seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Bumper start to Bookarama By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
Bookarama 2020 is shaping up to be a record-setter. The Rotary Club of Ashburton had already received a record number of books and assorted items to put on sale, and all they were needed were the people to come and buy them – which they did in huge numbers on opening day on Monday. “It’s been the best day we have had for years on Monday,” convenor David Mead said. “There was a steady flow of people all day. “I’ve never seen a crowd like it.” There were around 20 people – the regular bibliophiles – already waiting outside at 7am when the Rotary volunteers turned up and Mead said they had a line of at least 150 by the time the doors to the Ashburton Sports Hall swung open. With fully laden tables, the crowds kept coming right up until closing. Mead said a lot of it was down to a combination of the weather, the school holidays, South Canterbury Anniversary Day, and the Mid Town Mardi Gras event also being on. The bookworms kept rolling in at a reasonable rate on Tuesday as well, Mead said. “It’s all very pleasing and

Hundreds turned out on the opening day of the Rotary Club of Ashburton’s Bookarama at the Ashburton Sports Hall on Tancred Street on Monday. PHOTO HEATHER MACKENZIE pointing to a really good week for Bookarama.” The Covid-19 lockdown had been identified as a contributing factor to the Rotarians being inundated with books coming in this year, but Mead said it may also be adding to the strong start to sales. “People have upped their reading again during the lockdown and now they need something new to read.” The specials table, the popular high quality and vintage books have been progressively clearing out.
“We usually have more books in boxes stacked under the tables, but they have already been put up on the tables on Tuesday.” Puzzles have also proved popular. “There has been an awful lot of those going out the door,” Mead said. With a record number of books on offer and an impressive turnout to start the week, the Rotarians will be hoping to maintain the momentum to eclipse last year’s efforts when they raised over $50,000
before expenses. “If we carry on, the way we started it’s looking really good “There is still plenty of books out on the tables but the way things are walking out the door, you wouldn’t want to leave it too late.” The Bookarama at the Ashburton Sports Hall on Tancred Street continues today from 9am to 5.30pm, and then Thursday and Friday, it remains open until 8.30pm. The last chance for a bargain is on Saturday, from 9am to 12 midday.
Mark it in your calendar – this Friday the comedy show Paul Ego Live in Ashburton is finally going ahead! Pop Up Comedy producer Bec Sandys is MC, while support acts are Ashburton’s own Peter Livingstone and Christchurch magician and comedian Logan Kitney. Sandys said she was pleased to see the show now set to take to the stage after Covid delays. Initially Paul Ego Live in Ashburton was to stage at Hotel Ashburton on August 21, but Auckland’s Level 3 announcement meant Ego could not make that date. “I was stoked with the Level 1 announcement last Monday,” Sandys said yesterday. “There have been quite a few tickets cancelled with the new date, which makes it harder to put on the gig.” Nevertheless, she was confident Mid Cantabrians would come out on the night to support the show. She had been thrilled with the success of Ben Hurley in Methven this winter, and said the success of Pop Up Comedy events supported her being able to get more big names to the district in the future. Tickets are $25 on sale from reception at Hotel Ashburton, where the event will stage at 8pm. There will be limited door sales on the night for $30 if tickets don’t sell out prior, and people can also buy tickets from Eventfinda for $30. Hotel Ashburton is open for dining prior to the show.

Refugees’ plight walk’s focus Plant lover’s dream at Rakaia
By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
The first steps were taken on Saturday in Ashburton’s journey to becoming a welcoming home our first refugee families. As part of the Walk a Mile Campaign organised by the district’s Refugee Settlement Support team, people interested in being part of the refugee settlement project, donned their gym shoes and took to the streets. The walk was about making new connections, talking about refugees and the ways in which their assimilation into their new country could be eased. Thirty-one people took part in the event and were joined by Somalian refugee Marian Hussein who settled in Christchurch in the 1970s. Over morning tea at the Ashburton Museum, Marian shared her refugee story. She described her family’s need to flee the civil war in Somalia for fear of violence and death. She explained the long journey to the border of Kenya with many other mothers and children, whose fathers and husbands had been killed in the war. She talked about travelling without water and food and where there was constant exposure to illness and attacks from wild animals. Many people fell sick and died along the way. Those that did make it to Kenya were taken to a refugee camp where they began building make-shift shelters and buildings, finally receiving medical assistance and humanitarian aid. It was at this refugee camp that Marian and many other women and children were offered the chance to be resettled in New Zealand. Before the civil war Marian was a qualified doctor. On her arrival in New Zealand she found her qualifications were not accepted, and like many other refugees, she

Luckily Marian’s father had insisted she learn English, but many refugees arrive without that advantage. Over time, Marian studied psychology and public health at Otago University. She has received strong support from the Christchurch community, who helped her and her family settle into their new home. She now uses her skills to assisting refugees in Christchurch. She has returned to Somalia for a visit, but said New Zealand is now her home.
Event organiser refugee settlement team leader Kathy Harrington-Watt said the event had enriched walkers’ understanding of the experiences and challenges refugees overcame on their journey to resettlement in a new country. “They are certainly strong, resilient and survivors. There is a lot they can teach us,” she said. Prior to Covid-19 Ashburton was preparing to receive its first group of Afghani refugees in August. Their arrival has now been delayed, but the Government has confirmed Ashburton is still a settlement location, Harrington-Watt said.
It’s every plant lover’s dream, a sale dedicated just to plants. This Saturday, at the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, between the two big trees on the Main Road through town, Plants 4 U at Rakaia will hold their annual sale. The event is a Plains Presbyterian Parish Project and provides financial support to the people of the Rakaia community and organisers said it was the support of the locals that made the event a success. “We thank the community for their continued support of this project,” a spokesperson said. While focused on plants, the event also offers up many other items with produce stalls selling jam, marmalade, eggs and baking and also an elephant stall with lots of household bargains will be on offer. “We welcome all and look forward to returning customers and new folk. “Containers for plants and provided.” After a good growing season with strong plants a huge selection of plants, flowers, shrubs, succulents, lily bulbs, vegetable seedlings and many varieties of different plants, grown locally will be available. Advice to growers will also be given on the day. The even begins at 9am, this Saturday October 3 and will run through until 1pm.

Bronc riding clinic a success By Heather Mackenzie heather.m@theguardian.co.nz
Once again crowds will roar and cowboys will get dusty in the Methven Rodeo ring this Labour weekend. Under Covid Alert Level 2 the event looked in jeopardy, but the move to level one meant the show could go on, much to the organiser’s relief. The timing could not have been better for the Methven Bronc Riding Clinic organisers Hayley Johnson and Simon Ward. Now in its second year, Johnson said 15 riders from around the country enrolled in the two day weekend clinic, with riders ranging from novices to those with a couple of seasons behind them. “Last year we were lucky enough to have international instructors, but thanks to Covid-19 they couldn’t make it, so we enlisted national talent instead,” she said. The instructors may not have had flash American accents, but as far as international credentials go saddle bronc coaches Jeremy Dillion and Tim Costello and bare back teachers Stu De Ridder, John Hughes and Abbo Williams offered a wealth of international experience and knowledge. Rakaia-based bare back instructor Abbo Williams is no stranger to the Methven rodeo ring, after rodoeing for 10 years in New Zealand, Australia riding professionally and Canada. He said he was concentrating on teaching the bare back riders how to set their gear up with no mucking about, correct body posture and how to get off with the aid of the pickup riders. “Animal welfare is always at the top of our minds, so I spend time teaching the rules we all abide by. The stock are our biggest asset,” he said. Learning to ride a saddle bronc with the

Snow, a competent horse rider, said this was the first time he had ridden a saddle bronc and he was enjoying the experience. “So far I have learnt to get on, keep my

country homes earlier than normal. “It is great to see new riders coming into the sport. This wouldn’t be happening without the support of the Methven Rodeo Club and the rural pickup riders giving their time over the weekend.”

Wetlands restoration rewarding By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz
For the first 16 years that Ian and Sue Thornton owned their dairy farm at Ealing on the north bank of the Rangitata River, they did nothing with an overgrown river terrace below their farm. “It was just a wilderness that we looked at over the edge,” Ian Thornton said. “It was a mass of willows, old man’s beard, gorse, broom and quite a bit of muehlenbeckia, which is a native but quite an invasive climber.” The Thorntons farm irrigated dairy farms at Ealing and Hinds, totalling 475ha, which are managed by 50-50 sharemilkers. Since 2016 they have worked to restore the braided river wetland, adjacent to State Highway 1, which now has a QEII covenant protecting the 3.4 hectare site. The wetland is one of 15 across Canterbury getting restoration support as part of a New Zealand Landcare Trust-led project focused on managing wetlands as farm assets. About 90 per cent of wetlands throughout the country have been lost through drainage, land development and land use change. Environment Canterbury councillor and project chairman, Ian Mackenzie, told a field day at the Thornton farm that wetlands were a habitat most at threat of disappearing as they had traditionally been undervalued by landowners, particularly in a farming system. “We are wanting to turn that attitude around and get landowners to think of wetlands as an asset rather than a liability.” The 15 wetlands involved in the project were spread from Kaikoura to the Waitaki River and reflected different types of geography in Canterbury.

When the project started there was some scepticism that sufficient wetlands would be found in Canterbury. Instead it had been “swamped” by landowners wanting assistance with restoring wetlands on their properties, Mackenzie said. “That is really exciting.” NZ Landcare Trust project manager Jo Buckner said that no one size fits all for wetlands. “Everyone is different and has different needs. “Wetlands aren’t gardens. You are restoring an eco-system and it takes time.” Ian Thornton said initially a bulldozer was used to make a track around the toe of the terrace for about 300 metres, because about 25 years ago a big flood had wrecked the bottom end of the wetland and drained it. Shingle was moved to the area, with topsoil put back over the recreated berm and pond which now acts as a seal to contain the water and allow replanting. All the water is fed from natural springs. “There is normally a lot more water here, but the water table has dropped about 1m due to low rainfall.” The water level had started to come up again, which might be because of a recent 18mm rain, or possibly leakage from the MHV irrigation races which were again flowing for the season.

Ealing dairy farmers Ian and Sue Thornton are restoring a wetland on the north bank of the Rangitata River. PHOTO HEATHER CHALMERS The north bank of the Rangitata River is higher than the south bank so the water tended to go south when it flooded. The railway bridge, built in 1875, also acted as a natural barrier, which has protected the wetland from the ravages of a flooded, braided river. About 2500 plants have been planted so far, but some losses had occurred. Since using tree protectors it has been a lot easi-

Native plants were supplied by Peter Keller of Geraldine and were eco-sourced from seeds collected in the area. Natives are also naturally reseeding. A planting plan by Ines Stager had assisted with putting the right plants in the right areas. “Before the plan, I planted kanuka where it was too wet and carex where it was too dry.” Community involvement from Hinds

School pupils and the Hinds Lions Club helped plant carex secta and toi-toi around the edge of the wetland, along with flax, pittosporum, kanuka, cabbage trees and coprosmas in the drier areas. The area was already attracting native birdlife, particularly fantails, grey warblers, kingfishers and shining cuckoo.

Livestock shipping ban may be relaxed Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor.
PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN
RNZ The Minister of Agriculture has unveiled a policy that would allow some live cattle exports to be permitted from late next month. But it would only partially reverse a ban imposed after the Gulf Livestock 1 sank in a storm in the East China Sea. Its implementation would be dependent on the outcome of the election. The Gulf Livestock 1 had 43 crew on board – including two New Zealanders – and nearly 6000 cattle. A complete moratorium on such shipments was imposed after the accident and an urgent report was commissioned by Mike Heron QC. After a Cabinet decision, Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor said the rules would be relaxed – but only partially and not until after October 23. “Given the Heron advice, the director general of agriculture will be in a position (after that date) to make calls on whether animals can be moved offshore,” he said. “But it will be conditional, it will not be going back to where it was and there may be changes in those conditions.” There are about 27,000 animals that
were caught out by the moratorium and are now being kept in special containment areas at a cost of about $5 per head per day. Livestock exporters said they were relieved to learn that some of them might now be able to be moved. But further details of just how many will not be available until after the Heron inquiry has filed its verdict. Debra Ashton from Save Animals from Exploitation (SAFE) accused the government of pre-emptive behaviour. She said she was disappointed that Cabinet had approved conditional exports before the Heron review was finished. Even worse, there was a second, separate review, on the whole question of live exports from A to Z – and that was not finished either. “We were surprised to hear that Cabinet approved a conditional prohibition ahead of this review,” she said. “This signals to us that the Labour-led government is still very keen to continue live exports despite the risk to animals. Ashton said the government should have waited until all the facts were in before making policy.

OUR VIEW
Covid shackles slowly breaking By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
I
t seemed so oddly unfamiliar – the sight of hundreds of people out on the streets, converging, laughing and enjoying themselves. And in the wake of life as we know it to have become, Covid-19 style, the warm sounds of laughter, music and the smells of street food were welcomed on Monday when the Mid Town Mardi Gras kicked off. So long it seems since there’s been fun and frivolity in normal life around this country that to be fair a gathering of 20 people on the chessboard would have probably been seen as unfamiliar, but ticking off a big event for the first time in quite a while was excellent. We’ve become a little bit used to this sheltered life that Covid has forced upon us. We’re not used to being in places with a large number of people either and it may be that it takes a few events before we actually remember what it’s like. So it was so good to see a huge crowd out on East Street on Monday and, by the sounds making their way up to the top floor of Somerset House, it certainly seemed as though everyone was really enjoying themselves again – long may it continue. It’s a real shame we’ve lost the A&P show from the calendar because it would have been another great opportunity to break away the remaining shackles and get back to living the life we did before this pandemic struck the world down. But you can also understand why the decision was made too. Uncertainty and no clear path at the time made it almost impossible for organisers to agree to go ahead, let alone have to make the tough decision to pull the pin. Yes, we have to be careful that we maintain all the standards we’ve come to expect of ourselves and fellow members of the community, but we’ve also got to remember that life can be fun and that it’s OK to go out and spend the day wandering around with your friends at an event without worrying about what might come. If we let Covid-19 control us and the way we act, then that’s exactly what it will do.

Local halls and war memorials receive much needed funding M
any of you will have seen the great news at the weekend that several Mid Canterbury facilities have received Government funding for repairs and renovations, and I’m very pleased for what this will mean for our communities. On Saturday (September 26) it was announced that close to $12.4 million from the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) would be distributed around the country to 97 town halls and war memorials in need of repair. Four facilities in our district were included on that list. These were the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall, Mt Somers War Memorial Hall, Seafield Hall and the Ashburton cenotaph. Collectively, $181,000 will be used for a range of works to fix and upgrade the halls and memorial. In addition to repairing the facilities, the funding will provide economic benefits by creating an expected 40 jobs to carry out the work. For the reserve board members who volunteer their time to
By Hamish Riach CEO’s message
operate and care for the halls, the announcement would have been a huge relief for the future of these important local venues. Each of the halls service many groups and communities across our district. In addition to weddings, funerals, community events and functions that frequent them, many also support church groups and children’s play centres. They are a place to meet, celebrate and carry out important functions such as Civil Defence activities. In doing so, they help to facilitate our sense of community, particularly in our smaller towns and rural areas. That’s why this funding is so crucial to their survival and continued use. For the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall, the money will be used to replace auditorium chairs and install a generator for Civil
Defence purposes. The Mt Somers War Memorial Hall will be painted indoors and out, have a chimney removed, gib installed and its kitchen and hallway repaired. Meanwhile, the Seafield Hall will use the funds for recladding. Earlier in the year, the council carried out a lot of work cleaning and repairing the Ashburton cenotaph. It was hand-washed, sprayed for lichen and moss, and the mortar replaced. Only a few weeks ago, work was also completed on cleaning the stone tiles around the base of the near 100-year-old memorial. Now, with the help of $40,000 from the PGF, the two flag pole stone bases at either end of Baring Square West will be repaired as well. The current stones are beginning to fail, so they will be replaced with new re-carved stones. All of this work is expected to get under way before the end of the year, which is great news for our local tradies and the many people who use these facilities.
The Mt Hutt Memorial Hall will undergo some renovations after receiving a grant from the Provincial Growth Fund.

Support for technology sector a smart recovery plan
O
ne of the achievements of the previous National-led Government that I am most proud of is the roll-out of the Ultra-fast Broadband (UFB) programme in our urban centres and the implementation of the Rural Broadband Initiative to improve connectivity in our rural areas. These programmes have transformed the ability of New Zealanders to engage with the world and in the current situation with our borders closed due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, this ability has been critical. Due to the impacts of Covid-19 New Zealand is facing a longer and more painful economic crisis than earlier forecast, with Treasury predicting 100,000 more New Zealanders will lose their jobs in the next two years.
By Amy Adams Your MP – working for you
New Zealand needs to grow its way out of this economic crisis, which will only be possible with the hard work, ingenuity and determination of the private sector. For this reason I am supportive of National’s NZ Tech 2030 Plan, which was announced last week by National Party Leader Judith Collins. National wants to double the size of New Zealand’s technology sector by 2030 with a $1.29 billion plan that will aim to create at least 100,000 new high-paying, future-proofed tech jobs. Doubling the size of the technology sector by 2030 is an ambitious goal, but this is a unique opportunity to drive a step change in our technology
PLAN INCLUSIONS National’s NZ Tech 2030 Plan includes: ■■ Establishing a Minister for Technology ■■ Offering 1,000 tertiary scholarships per year targeted at students from low decile schools to undertake science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) degrees ■■ Establishing a STEM-focused partnership school and restoring funding for specialist ICT graduate schools. ■■ Introducing a fast-track tech-
nology skills visa ■■ Investing $1 billion in technology infrastructure upgrades with the aim of achieving 100 Mbps uncapped internet speeds for everyone using Ultra-Fast Broadband. ■■ Establishing three targeted investment funds for tech startups worth $200 million each, with the cost split evenly between Government and the private sector. ■■ Developing the world’s most tech-friendly regulation
sector. With about 50,000 Kiwis returning home because of the Covid-19 pandemic, now is the time to harness their talent and
create an ecosystem of technology companies in New Zealand. National’s NZ Tech 2030 Plan is expected to cost $690 million
over its first four years. Infrastructure upgrades over the following six years are expected to cost another $600 million, therefore bringing the total cost of the initiative to $1.29 billion. New Zealand’s technology exports now total $8 billion per annum – equal to our forestry and seafood exports combined. National’s NZ Tech 2030 Plan will work towards increasing this to $16 billion by 2030, establishing thousands of new tech businesses in the process. This plan will give Kiwis with worldclass skills and experience the chance to flourish right here and help grow our economy. Our tech sector has amazing potential and if we attract the right talent and create an environment for growth, it could be bigger than our dairy sector in 10 to 15 years.

Four seasons in one day for opener
Bowlers chase Anama Tray Murray Anderson keeps an eye on proceedings at Saturday’s Anama Tray tournament at the Allenton Bowling Club. With both greens in play, 26 pairings took part in the competition across the afternoon. Played in an Australian Pairs format, where one player in the pair plays two bowls, then the other four, before the first player plays two again, it’s a different style of competition and allows players to test themselves in various situations. High winds meant the day was a challenge for players, but nevertheless some quality bowls were played. Richard Kane and John Drayton emerged on top of the pack to win the tournament. The Tinwald Cycling Club kicked off the new cycling season with a graded scratch race around the Christys Road block on Sunday. The event started and finished in bright sunlight, with riders enduring a hail storm and building winds mid-race, adding some spice to the day. A and B grade rode over 36km. Steve Hands put his winter training to good use, producing a strong ride to claim A honours, riding the distance in 54.00. Tony Ward and Brad Hudson rounded out the top three positions. The B spoils went to Mike Gallagher, who was too strong in a tight finish, seeing off Kyle Gray and Sam Clement-Stewart in the charge to the line. C and D grade raced over 27km. Brian Goodes showed he will be one to watch during the season, securing C grade honours, covering the course in 49.58. Shona McGrath pulled out a top shelf ride to take second place, with Craig Roulston charging into third place. Wayne Whiting made the trip south worth its while, lifting the D grade winner’s cup. Emma Hudson produced an eye-catching ride to take second place with Richard Begg in third. The juniors also contested a graded scratch event with the A graders riding over 18km and B graders 9km. It was a good day for the Spillane stable. Zoe rode the course in 36.21, to secure victory in A grade, seeing off the strong challenges of Will Saunders and Ryan Gallagher. Meanwhile little brother Copper took B honours with an equally strong ride. Charlotte Neal, having her first start, put in an awesome effort to take second place. Tom Reid dug deep to secure the third place spoils. Kenny Johnston took division 2 honours in a tight finish with second place getter Janette Hooper. Next week the club will contest a 32km handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block.

ONE APOLLO SOUNDS WARNING Lawrence McCormick notches 50th driving win By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
The riches of Cup Week at Addington now firmly await local trotting star, One Apollo. The Brent White-trained gelding held off all challenges at a windy Motukarara on Sunday to claim the DG Jones Memorial Trotting Cup, showing the open class trotting ranks that he’s a force to be reckoned with in the coming months. In front and out of trouble with Ricky May in the bike, the powerful trotter was too good in the run to the line and won nicely, although a challenge from the enigmatic Matua Tana had punters worried at the 100-metre mark. It was there the latter galloped and ended his chance, leaving One Apollo clear for the win. “I was pretty rapt with that win,” White told HRNZ after the race. I was pretty confident that the 10m might just be enough to have the wood over them. But I didn’t expect him to lead up and go into the wind two times, but he had done it and won it.” And now Cup Week, and the Dominion Handicap awaits.
“The Dominion is the big goal. I’m 50/50 on the Ashburton Trotters Flying Mile at the moment, but we’ll make a call closer to the time. Then it will be Kaikoura and then onto Cup Week.” Earlier in the day, Lawrence McCor-

mick notched up the 50th driving win of his career when longshot, Sungait’s Legacy won the maiden trot. Trained by his father David and partowned by the pair along with their partners, Elizabeth McCormick and Melissa Barwell, the win had been a long time coming for the 33-year-old. “It’s nice to get it out of the way,” McCormick said. “And to do it in Dad’s colours made it even more special, he’s been a great supporter of mine.”
McCormick cut his teeth in the game here locally in Mid Canterbury, before a shift to North Canterbury where he worked for Andrew Stuart and then Gavin Smith. He spent time in Australia working for respected trainer, Aidan De Campo before returning to New Zealand where he now trains a small team on the outskirts of Tinwald, as well as operating his own electrical business. McCormick’s win and also that of One Apollo capped a great day for Mid Canterbury at the Banks Peninsula meeting. Sarah O’Reilly continued her good run of form when she produced an excellent front-running drive on Tiebreaker for Geoff Dunn while her uncle, Leo produced another longshot winner when he guided Barkley to success for Chris McDowell. On Friday night at Addington, May was in the winner’s circle with Arden’s Ace to shift himself to 2960 career driving wins after One Apollo’s success on Sunday. Meanwhile, John Morrison kept his hot run of form going with a winning double at Winton on Thursday, saluting with Racing Minister and Willangus Lad.

RUGBY LEAGUE
Baabaas edge Oilers, miss final By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
The Ashburton Barbarians had to come from behind to beat the Chertsey Oilers and claim the Mid Canterbury Shield in Aoraki Rugby League in Rakaia on Saturday. But the 34-22 win was not enough for the Barbarians to make the grand final, after the Outlaws outgunned the country Cowboys 42-16 setting up a rematch between the Timaru sides for the 2020 title. The Oilers, who had conceded 190 points in their previous two matches, showed greater resolve on defence and found their attacking spark to lead 22-12. However, the Barbarians fought back to have their noses in front 24-22 at halftime. The second half had the Barbarians hold the Oilers scoreless and added two tries for a 12-point buffer at the final whistle. Unfortunately the game didn’t go the full 80 minutes, after tempers flared following a high tackle,
Xavier Bartlett on the charge for the Barbarians.
and it was called off early. Xavier Bartlett continued his try-scoring form with a double for the Barbarians and George Hufnaga also scored twice. Tata Lisala and Lima Senetenari scored the other two tries, with Senetenari landing five conversions. Romeo Touli scored a double and landed all three conversions for the Oilers, with the other tries to Robert Langi and Ao Touli. In the junior grades, The U13 Barbarians beat a Cowboys-Outlaws combined team 38-12. In the U9 match the Barbarians edged the Oilers 12-9. Meanwhile an Aoraki senior squad has been announced, with seven Barbarians and two Oilers in the 37-strong training group for the upcoming South Island Premiership. The Barbarians had James Hifo, George Hufanga, Leoli Leo, Isireli Masiwini, Ruben Browne, Devaun Thompson, and Tololima Savaiinaea selected along with Seamus Smyth and Will McKenzie from the Oilers.
Competitive cricket is set to soon return to Mid Canterbury with the cricket season just weeks away from commencing. On Saturday, local side the Tech Stags had their first hitout of the season when they took on Hornby at the Ashburton Domain. The side this season will compete in the South Canterbury senior competition, a one-day format with a white ball and colour uniforms, breaking away from the traditional red ball and whites. They were victorious on Saturday, winning by 20 runs in what was a good hit-out. They begin their competition on October 10, when they host the Celtic Cricket Club from Timaru. Meanwhile, Allenton will again field a side in the Canterbury Country competition on the northern side of the Rakaia river and begin their campaign against Cheviot at the Waiau Domain.

South bowlers fall short By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
There was no luck for the South Island in their annual clash with their northern counterparts in Saturday’s indoor bowls test match, but one Mid Canterbury local did come with some silverware. The South Islanders were unable to repel the challenge of the North in the Kevin Eddy Memorial in Christchurch, losing 2820 in the three-round day of play. South Island captain and Ashburton local, Michael Lawson had a small consolation from the defeat though. The men’s fours side that he was a member of managed to win their tie and
claim an inter-island medal. The quartet, which featured former Ashburton player Simon Thomas, won the first two of their three matches to have the medal wrapped up heading into the final round. Unfortunately they lost their final match of the day but still claimed the medal. After the first round the two sides were locked up with four wins each from the eight matches. The North Island took a one-point advantage after the second round and were then able to drive clear in the final round to win. It extends the North Island’s dominance in the annual fixture with the South Island having not won since 2004.

Tinwald Orange have reaped the rewards to cap some strong late season momentum in Mid Canterbury’s first grade competition. The men’s contingent knocked over Allenton under the blazing sun on Sunday to win the Jonny Hunt Memorial Trophy.
The Mid Canterbury club side have been the form team in the second leg of round robin games, after Wakanui took out the Hydes Trophy at the end of the first round. After a successful season for the club, it was fitting that Wakanui faced off with one of their combined teams in the middle game. Wakanui were too good for Hampstead/ Wakanui 5-2 to finish the second phase in second spot behind Tinwald Orange.
In the final game on turf, Hampstead Lowcliffe nabbed their second win of the season in beating Tinwald Black 5-3 to finish their campaign on a high. In one of its best performances of the year, the team found some attacking impetus on the field, with Jayden Etheridge securing a third period double. Other goals were scored by Reece Watson, Ethan Palmer and Ethan Walsh, as the team leapfrogged Tinwald Black in the final wash-up.
The outlook for next season looks promising as Mid Canterbury United capped their season off with a classy display. United completed a 4-2 win over Parklands in Christchurch to finish 2020 off with back-to-back victories and put forward their credentials for next year after being promoted to Mainland’s Canterbury Championship League this season. The two clubs have been difficult to separate this season, however a charged up Mid Canterbury side took it upon themselves to establish control over the home team, and by the second half the outcome was a sure thing. The visitors were out to 4-0 by the second spell off the back of another goal-scoring brace from Luke Martin. It was almost time to celebrate after Jamie Smitheram netted a stunner, before Nic Eden completed the quartet courtesy of a blinding through ball from outgoing hero Sam Hall. Two late penalties by Parklands got them within two, however not before some heroics in the box from debutant Hayden Dove. The young keeper, who came in for the injured Luke Sheppard, was assured at the back, saving a penalty and rescuing his side at several other decisive points of the game. The Reserves earlier went down 4-2 to again highlight the side’s growth as their brave foray in one of the top leagues came to an end. A hat-trick from JJ Boon led MCUFC to a 3-1 win over Papanui-Redwood in the division 4, 5th and 6th place playoff, ensuring they finished their campaign favourably. Across the district and Methven’s scheduled double-header with Christchurch United and Ferrymead Bays Baby Blues was scrapped after both sides withdrew. It was left to Methven International to round off proceedings in division 7 as tthey hammered Banks Peninsula 6-2. Veteran Matt Gailbraith was the star of the day with a hat-trick, as a tough campaign ended on a highly positive note.

United teens head home cup win By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
A proud Mid Canterbury United 15th grade coach believes his side have “rattled a few feathers” after the youngsters headed their way to glory. The club youth side capped a dominant season with another comprehensive display in the 15th Grade Div 1 Cup Final as they knocked over Selwyn United 4-0 at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday. The team edged ahead 1-0 in the first half, before putting the result to bed in the second spell, adding another three goals as the group fed off some vocal home support. Saturday’s win also kept the team’s unbeaten home record intact. Coach Richard Ward was delighted for his squad. “They never let me down,” he said. “They’re a great bunch.” “I’m really pleased and proud of them.” He said the weekend’s victory capped a
lengthy journey for the squad, who have come of age over the past few seasons. “We’ve kept the core of the squad together over the last few years and it’s just starting to pay dividends. “They’ve improved and stuck together, and they’re good friends off the field as well.” All four goals were headed in with Elliott Ward netting a second half double and Kingsley Olawale and Boaz Drye scoring one apiece. The team had numerous attempts on goal, only to be denied by the crossbar on a few occasions. Ward said that the side and the club in general was benefiting from testing themselves against big clubs in Christchurch. “If you put everything into perspective, we’ve jumped up a higher age bracket and started up in div 2 before being put into div 1. “We’ve had a real good go at it. “The team has certainly rattled a few feathers up in Christchurch this year.”

Some sage words being taken under advisement at the Ashburton Bowling Club’s greens.
28 CLUB NEWS Allenton Bowling Club
Out on the grass again! Fantastic to be able to enjoy having both greens back in action they certainly are being put to good use by visitors and members alike. We had new members to welcome again this week so it is onward and upward, with lots happening in the club. Our first Sponsorship tournament was held on Saturday with the green full of members, a great effort by the organisers, and it was tremendous fun, some of the bowls showing that they hadn’t been out of the bag for a while and becoming the skips nightmare!! However most improved as the afternoon went on. Winners were; John Drayton, Rose Johnson, Mick Buchanan 2nd Bruce Hopwood [Birthday Boy] Anne Reid, Donalda Watson 3rd Richard Kane, Faye McKnight, Lindsay Kearns 4th Murray Smallridge, Raylene Heads, Janet Kingsbury. On Tuesday Ladies Day, Rosemary ran the final of the Patterson, a nearly full muster of ladies arrived with lunches ready for a great day. This format certainly is very popular, and playing all disciplines makes everyone play, even if we don’t like Singles. Championship games are about to start, so more good bowls. The Campbell Trophy was played on Wednesday as drawn pairs, it was a very hot afternoon and quite a few were glad to retire to the club house at the end of play, saying “we’re not used to this yet.” The cuppa and refreshments went down well. Winners were M. Smallridge and M Watson 2nd M. Reid and C. McFarlane, 3rd M. Palmer and B. Molloy. Saturday afternoon saw 26 pairs take to the green challenging for the Anama Tray, this is played as a 2x4x2 pairs game and the winner were Richard Kane and John Drayton. It was fine but quite windy which proved challenging for most of us. The Ladies, one player under 8yr tournament scheduled for September 28 has been postponed until the New Year when there is more time to enjoy playing it. However the Open 8 year and under triples is all go for Sunday 4th October. 12.30 start, entries in as soon as possible please, a good day of bowls is assured. Four of our top lady players were away to try their skill in Wellington last weekend at an invitational tournament. We hope The Two Sandras, Rosemary and Wendy enjoyed the tournament. News Flash; they ended up a very creditable fifth, well done. Linda is organising a bus trip to the garden and fete in support of St, John Ambulance funds, being held at a Rakaia garden, on Thursday 15th October, if you wish to join us please contact Linda. This is open to everyone, the more the merrier, and the better for St John, who knows when we may be the ones who needs them. $20 entry and a small charge for the bus. 70 odd stalls and a cooking demonstration. Allenton Bowls has a website that we invite you all to visit through the Facebook site. Photos and snippets are on it for all to enjoy.

With the glorious weather we have been having, business at Ashburton Bowling Club has fallen into place seamlessly. A good crowd turned out for a club day roll up on Tuesday September 22, not quite so many on Thursday 24th, while the ladies were playing their Drawn Triples games. Subsequently this was won by Diana King’s team with A. Blain and A Gibson. On September 18 at the MSA Friday Triples the team of M Anderson, W Suttie, G Crack came first with 3 wins, 19 ends, 39 points. At the first Combined Rollover Triples on Saturday 26th (another glorious day), first place went to R Herriott, D Murcott, P Quinn, R Dakers with 2 wins, 10 ends, 18 points, and 2nd was C Bird, A Gibson, C. Rooke, M Watson with 2 wins, 10 ends, 15 points. We had a very good turnout! Coming up this week will be the Ladies Drawn Fours on Tuesday, 29, and the Ladies Championship Triples will start on Thursday October 1 and continue on Tuesday the 6th, all at 9.30 am. It could be very nippy!! Let’s hope we are playing in warm sunshine again soon – very good bowling everyone!

This deal from a Monday night competition threw up challenges for all four players during both the auction and the play. East, as dealer, opens with a heart bid, but at what level? Many will use a pre-emptive bid of three hearts, a few may choose four hearts, or even one heart. South may or may not employ the takeout double with his 14 points. For the moment we will have East playing in three of four hearts. South’s opening lead cannot fail to set up a trick for East, but which is the least damaging? Definitely a spade or a diamond! If he leads a Heart or Club at any stage, he is gifting a trick to declarer, East. When South wins his two heart tricks he must return either a spade or a diamond forcing east to ruff in his hand. Eventually, East must lead a club from his hand and South gratefully takes his two club tricks. This patient play holds East to nine tricks – three hearts making, but four hearts goes one trick away. Should become the declarer in three NT he must make sure that he comes through East’s heart holding once from the North dummy hand and that will give him 10 tricks – four no trumps. A pleasing result indeed. In spades, with North as declarer, West’s six spades are a very real defence threat.

Full house for Janey (Cunliffe) and Teresa. Our two Tinwald ladies. Unfortunately, Teresa was unable to make it so Janey carried on. Thank you to you both for organising the evening programme. A first up for you both I believe. Lorraine Boud played in. Thank you once again Lorraine. Bev welcomed 2 visitors and one new member and handed the evening over to Janey. The piano was given an excellent work over this time around, with completely different styles from each player. Janet began on the keyboard with “The gambler” “Crazy” and “Give me the moonlight”. Three of my favourites. Rose then on piano, with her Covid song which she brushed up on in lockdown. (I guess we all have a few ‘covid songs’). “The back keys” a piece she played when younger and complete with 6 sharpes. “The stars will remember” “When the sun says goodnight to the mountain” and “curtains of night” four lovely pieces. Then a newcomer, Suzie Early, boogied her way through three or four numbers. A style new to us and had the room rocking. Good on you Suzie, enjoyed. Irene then joined her on accordion with a medley.”Bill Baily” Music music, music” “Down by riverside” just a few. Irene has been instrumental in introducing a good many of our newer members, and helps to blow away that initial ‘first time performer mode’ by accompanying them, and then they seem to go it on their own. Thank you, Irene. Then the skiffle group sang eight songs from their book 4 (1 of 7). I believe we were all there. The stage was chokka anyway. Well done gang. Ann completed the evening with yet another style on the old upright, and concluded another enjoyable evening. Her choices were: “What a wonderful world” (well it sorta was when Louis Armstrong sang it”) “Desperado” “Skye boat song” “Ode to Joy” and Theme from Greased Lightning”. What a great variety of songs. Thank you those who served supper. Thank you Janey and Teresa.
Owen Miller and Pauline Bell stand proud as the clubs champion golfers. Owen was straight as a die all day, chipped and putted superbly and finally overcame Robbie on the 33rd hole. Pauline had a ding dong battle with Wendy and the game could have gone either way, but like the true champ that she is, she sank the important putts at the end of the game, and held off Wendy’s spirited charge. Men’s intermediate champ is Bruce Day, he played brilliantly all day and did not really give Chris a sniff of a chance. Rhonda Gallagher played very well to edge Leigh Wackrow in the ladies Bronze 1. Power played touch in the mens Junior A, Ken Clucas was smashing the ball miles and Alan White was 1 putting every green. The power game won in the end with Ken taking the title again. Elenor Sullivan pipped Brenda Fechney to the Bronze 2 title and Eric Parr had to go an extra hole, as if 36 is not enough, to beat Murray Wackrow in the Junior B. Tonee Hurley beat Robynne Nicol for the ladies 9 hole championship and Sam Prince had to go an extra 4 holes before he could pick up another 9 hole mens title over a tenacious Stewey Bennett. Other winners on the day were Nicky Gill, Jacqui Welch, Jenny Williams, Murial Morgan, Peter Walker, Chris Ralston, Terry Molloy, Stewart Dunlop and Dick Hansen. Well done to everyone involved. On Sunday we had our annual Captain v Presidents matchplay game, and Murray must have paid his players better as the President had a strong 12-7 victory. This Saturday we have round 1 of the DCL cup, this is 2 rounds of stroke this year, with the second round being Saturday week . On Sunday we welcome our friends from around the district coming to play for the Mayors trophy in the County stroke. Teams will be picked, but even if you are not shoulder tapped to be in the team, there are still plenty of individual prizes to go for. We also have some good friends coming down from Weedons to join in the fun, so pop along and enjoy the course. See you there. Good golfing.

U3A’s regular monthly meeting was held on September 22nd at the Ashburton Event centre. Our speaker, introduced by Alison Westwood, was Sir David Skegg an epidemiologist and public health physician. During the Covid 19 epidemic he has been a special advisor to Parliament’s Epidemic response committee. Sir David attracted the largest audience we have had for U3A in Ashburton. He gave us a brief summary of some epidemics New Zealand has suffered from, starting in the early 1900s. This covered the Smallpox outbreak in 1913, the Spanish flu in 1918 when 9000 people died, then the HIV virus in the 1980s. The Havelock North campylobacter outbreak in 2016 killed 4 people and was a public health failing. Then in 2019 the measles outbreak saw 700 + in hospital although there has been a vaccine available for years. New Zealand was ill prepared for the Covid-19 outbreak i.e. no ability to trace contacts. The reasons for the early success dealing with the virus included having an elimination strategy and closed borders but then failures in border control saw the virus reappear. Sir David stressed that our new normal will be vaccination, treatment and screening of travellers. Herd immunity will not develop by natural infection and the virus will evolve. There is no sign yet that the virus is getting less dangerous. The need to wear masks, use hygiene care, physical distancing and no handshaking is ongoing. Other current pandemics are the use of tobacco and obesity, both of which are huge burdens on the public health system. Sir David spoke about the commercial determinants of these 2 diseases and the need for a public health response by government as well as individual health care. A levy on sugar-laden drinks in the United Kingdom is working as industry removed sugar quickly. Sir David was thanked for his excellent and enlightening talk by Murray Wackrow and all members expressed their appreciation, Next month’s speaker Minh Tran speaking on South China Sea Disputes. The co-chairperson welcomed a good muster of members and quickly sorted the business matters. There were 18 members who stayed at Staveley Camp last week and several day visitors. The weather co-operated with the dyeing and felting except for Thursday. Another camp has been booked for February 10th-14th 2021. The Celebrating Fibrecraft Exhibition closes on September 27 and the items can be collected from Pam on 29th September. Members are invited to bring along their spinning wheels on Sunday 27th and have a ‘Spin In’ at the Art Gallery 2pm – 4pm. The Ashburton AGM is on October19th at 1:30pm. PLEASE NOTE change of time. This is to be followed by an afternoon tea to acknowledge our 50th Jubilee. South Canterbury Area AGM is going to be held at The Plains Museum on November 16th which will follow our own meet-

ing which starts at 9;30am. The ‘Show and Tell’ table had quite a few hats – felted, knitted and crochet, a scarf made in a ‘Touch’ yarn, several skeins of wool and sliver that had been dyed at Stavely as well as a jersey and a jacket and Ann had been ‘playing’ with children’s t-shirts that she had printed brightly coloured motifs on with her new printer. The members then spent time spinning, going through the Library and exchanging ideas and methods of various crafts they were trying.

Twelve members were present at Hinds WI spring flower show held in the Davison Room of the Hinds Community Centre on Wednesday 23rd September. The number of flower entries in particular was pleasing, given that the usual seasonal gales had played havoc with some of the gardens. Annette Simister welcomed all and led in the Ode and Aspirations. Business followed; correspondence, finance, a brief report given by delegate Lorraine on the NZ Federation WI Conference held the previous Monday and Tuesday in Wellington, under cover of the Brentwood Hotel. Covid meant that it was largely business, elections and presentations on the agenda; but a lovely dinner meant socialising, prize-giving and a good time on the Sunday night. The Roll Call was “Coins for Friendship” and the motto was read: “A person of words and not of deeds is like a garden full of weeds.” Birthday honours were accorded to Rona McConnell, and Val Goodridge won the raffle. Some members are hoping to attend the Cup day, Quizco and Half-Yearly meeting at Tinwald Memorial Hall on Wednesday September 30, the theme is to be: “Birthday Party.” The judges for the day were welcomed; Gwenith Quelch and Alison Scammell who thought the entries were good but also provided some hints for success. Afternoon tea was then served in the Supper Room and members had a look at their handiwork. Results: Cut flowers, Lowe Trophy 1st Lorraine Baughan, second = Jenny Sinclair and Elizabeth Bell. Daffodils, Thimble. Annette Simister and Jenny 1st =, Floral, Elms Trophy. 1st Jenny, 2nd Elizabeth Bell. Cooking, Ellis cup, 1st Ruth Sheppard, 2nd Valmai McKenzie. Handcraft, shoe-horn. 1st = Rosa Bennett, 2nd Jo Wilson, Jenny. Novelty, Letter Rack 1st Jenny, 2nd Jo. Overall, McConnell trophy, Jenny 1st, 2nd Ruth, 3rd Elizabeth. Our thanks go to the hostesses for the excellent afternoon tea served up, and to the judges who were presented with some plants for their gardens. In all, a very enjoyable day.
RSA Women’s Section
President, Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday, September 24 2020. She especially welcomed the RSA President and vice-president and partners and four visitors from Temuka. Thirty four were seated at beautifully decorated tables. Joy Tarbotton said Grace. The menu was roast chicken stuffing and gravy, roast potatoes and pumpkin, mashed carrot and parsnip and peas, followed by fruit salad and pavlova. Committee members served the diners. The kitchen ladies were thanks for the excellent meal. There were five raffle draws, so five happy winners. RSA President, Merv Brenton congratulated the women’s section on celebrating 75 years, a big milestone. He gave some history, saying the ladies have always given great support to the RSA. The birthday cake was made and decorated by Kelly Rose Blackburn, she was thanked by Colleen Hands, who cut the cake. Andrea Dunham on behalf of the Temuka visitors said thank you for the invitations and congratulations on the 75th birthday. Errol Graham was the entertainer, he sang and played guitar for an hour. Some lovely songs, so easy to listen to. People sang along as they wanted to. He also sang Happy Birthday to any members to have a September birthday. Errol was thanked for giving up time to help the celebration. Colleen thanked for the committee for all they had done. The kitchen ladies served tea, coffee and birthday cake. This ended a lovely time. Colleen and committee had arranged a wonderful occasion.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Someone you enjoy being with is also the star of your tenser conflicts, which only serves as further proof of what is, in some way, a very intimate connection. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Today, you’ll learn how badly you want something. Either you won’t get it and you’ll use that loss as a gauge, or you will get it, and your subsequent satisfaction will teach all. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Your level of agency in a situation will have everything to do with your mood about it. Feeling somewhat in control of what happens produces a much better mood than a perception of powerlessness. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Bad moods are caused not by what happens, but by two culprits: negative thoughts and distorted thoughts. Everything that occurs is an opportunity to practice your interpretive skills. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Sometimes, it’s as though you can read minds and tell the future. But right now, it’s better just to ask people what they are thinking and to respect the future as a question mark. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): As you relate to family, help friends, get after work projects and do more, you’ll notice that everything you take on is a little easier than it was only a month ago. You’re just better. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Though you feel emotionally bound to the people and projects you care about, it will benefit you to ask this thought exercise: What if your only real duty is to your own sense of adventure? SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Your people are your people not because they are so much like you but because of what you’re willing to do for them – which is just about anything they might need. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): There’s a new goal to strive for, but you’ll accomplish it with the same approach that’s worked for you in the past. You’ll start with a sketch – an outline of a general vision – and then fill in the blanks. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): What’s on the outside can be arranged to make life easier, certainly. And yet, the circumstances cannot and will not ever be the source of joy, which is an inwardly generated force. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Many situations are helped by black-or-white thinking, for instance, when you have to assess quickly, act decisively, commit deeply. But for most things, allow for a full range of colour. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You might not like the information that comes your way initially, but it will be good to know, as it will deepen your understanding of the scene you’re in, thus giving you more power in it.

An improved showing at home from the Old Golds was not enough to stop Mid Canterbury finishing the 2020 representative window in style. The Hammers dispatched North Otago 35-17 in Oamaru on Saturday to finish the truncated Heartland competition unbeaten. Coach Jason Rickard believed
the score in the end flattered the visitors, after captain Tyler Blackburn scored in the shadows of full time after North Otago was hot on attack. “Last play of the game, I said to the guys ‘look we need a bonus point’ and we ran 95 metres and scored, so that was a nice way to finish the season. “They were a completely different side and we expected that to be the case.” Following a 23-point win the previous week in Hinds, Mid
Canterbury encountered a steelier North Otago outfit at the weekend. However another firm defensive effort by the Hammers kept the hosts out, as Mid Canterbury outscored their rivals four tries to two. After some impressive individual displays the previous week, the Hammers’ coaching staff were searching for a more complete team performance in Oamaru. “We probably felt we didn’t fire
as many shots in Hinds,” Rickard said. “North Otago’s defence was much stronger, and they held on to more ball. “You always felt like they could get back into the game.” Rickard nonetheless paid tribute to his own team’s attitude and determination without the ball. “It probably showed the true character of the guys that we have there. “They all fought for each other and never gave up, and defended
our try-line pretty stoically. First half tries to first five Nathan McCloy and wing Tait Chisman helped the Hammers to a 17-3 lead at the break. In what was a more competitive affair in the second 40, frontrower Adam Williamson dotted down for the Hammers in the 60th minute. However North Otago kept the visitors honest, getting the score back to 28-17 before Blackburn’s long-ranger iced the result in injury time.
