The annual Rangitata New Year’s Sports Day is open to all ages, even those who found staying upright somewhat of a challenge.

Family fun at the Rangitata Huts By Heather Mackenzie heather.m@theguardian.co.nz

North Rangitata Hutholders’ Association committee member Bob Verrall, said they had never had a rainy New Year’s sports day that he could remember, and that record remains unbroken, just. The track was considered hard and fast and Verrall said the lack of wind and moderate temperatures made for a perfect day’s racing.

First off the blocks was the eight and nine-year-old girls’ running race, quickly followed by the same aged boys’ race. An enthusiastic crowd of batch owners, campers and visitors cheered the runners on from their deck chairs and picnic blankets. Compere, Hilary Tobeck wasted no time in calling up the next lot of runners, the littlies. Mums and dads accompanied the under-fives to the start line to make sure their young charges set off on time and kept running the

right way. Two-year-old Quinn Hall loved the race so much, he turned around at about the halfway point, ran back to the start and did it all again, much to the delight of lookers who all asked each other “How cute is he?”. “This is always a fun family day out that has been going for years, Verrall said. The association will be celebrating its 125th next year and Verrall didn’t think there had been a missed sports day in that time.

As well as providing a great afternoon of entertainment, the day is the association’s big fundraiser of the year. “The money we raise today will mainly go into upgrading the children’s playground.” Owning a hut here is like stepping back in time. The area has never been divided up into sections, so the huts are in no particular order and none of them are fenced, Verrall said. This open plan environment means the children can all get to-

gether in a big crowd and play. “The other night there must have been about 25 kids, torches in hand, getting ready to play spotlight.” The tight-knit multi-generational community makes it easy to keep an eye on the children and what they are up to. “Like I always said to my kids, if you do something wrong here we’ll know about it before you get home.” More photos page 24

YEAR IN REVIEW

Teachers, unsung Covid-19 heroes By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

We might have been a team of five million heroes during the Covid-19 lockdown, but there was one group of Kiwis that has to earn the title ‘super heroes”. And while that title could have gone to all the frontliners who kept the country ticking, who had to turn up to work while the rest of us stayed in our bubble, there is one group of workers for whom Covid-19 lockdown meant going way above and beyond, and that’s New Zealand’s teachers. An absolute shout out to them. They were square and centre under the pump. The school gates might have been locked, but teachers were still out there teaching in what for most were very different and very difficult circumstances. Not only did they have to continue providing classroom lessons, albeit via Zoom, but many of those teachers were also doing double duty as mum or dad on the home front, ensuring their own children didn’t miss out on weeks of education. At secondary level the pressure was immense for teaching staff. While many students were well equipped with laptops or home PCs, and decent internet connections, many were not, and it was the have nots that put huge pressure on staff at Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College. Staff added the preparation of hard copy lessons and their delivery to their workload. And in doing that their sole motivation was ensuring no student missed out on vital lessons that would mean they were able to complete a successful year’s work. And then there was the catchup game staff and students had to play when school gates opened. All the fun stuff was canned, and for a full term it was heads down and bums up in the classroom. One of the huge learnings from

After a tricky few weeks, teachers and students were happy to get back to the classroom after lockdown at Tinwald Primary School. From left to right: Georgia McQueen, Bella and Sophia Jack, Blake Dippie, Charlie, Noah and Hadley Holland and Rod Matthews. PHOTO MATT MARKHAM 290420-MM-003 the Covid experience was that distance learning can work. For some secondary students it was already part of their school life, but when schools were forced to adopt it on a massive scale, it underwent the ultimate test as a learning option. And that sends a clear signal that this will inevitably be the way of the future – one teacher, hundreds of students receiving the same information at the same time. And while that might be an unpalatable thought because it will take away human to human contact, it might go a long way towards solving New Zealand’s chronic secondary teacher shortage. For schools, 2020 will go down as a year that challenged, tested

and in most cases saw staff and students rise. It tested the mettle, the determination and the commitment of entire school communities and largely eclipsed everything else that happened during the year. Covid aside, life on the district’s 20 odd campuses continued as it always does, filled with ups, downs, minor crises and hundreds of milestones and achievements, major and minor, but all important to the students involved. For at least three schools – Ashburton College, Ashburton Intermediate and Allenton the year saw huge progress on their rebuild plans. Allenton and Intermediate are within striking distance now of work starting on

their projects, while the college, with a $60 million rebuild on the books is inching closer to having its plans signed off in the new year. Every school fights an ongoing battle for money, enough money to run their school and to provide students with appropriate classrooms and the equipment they need. It’s a battle none win. Even the three with big building plans have had to fight tooth and nail every inch of the way to ensure the final plan meets not just their needs today, but also their needs for the future. The Ministry of Education is always reluctant to spend more than it has to and that is likely to see at least two of the rebuild project with little or no change in

pressure on classroom space. While the Ashburton District does not have the same zoning issues that beset Christchurch, there is sufficient pressure on some schools that the ministry has stepped in and drawn a raft of lines on a map that determine your school by your address. In most cases those lines will be irrelevant as most students in the district attend their neighbourhood school, but for some it might mean a bit of a rethink. This is what feeding over 500 scouts, venturers, leaders, activity teachers and special guests looks like.

Scouts descend on Staveley By Heather Mackenzie heather.m@theguardian.co.nz

Hundreds of scouts have set up camp in Staveley. The Staveley Adventure Scout Camp, run every three years, got under way on Saturday. The 2021 camp is the fourteenth time it has been held and is open to scouts from Canterbury, although some like Zana Simpson have made the trip over from the West Coast. The first of the 380 Canterbury

scouts started arriving at around noon and quickly went about putting up tents and getting their respective entranceways and areas ready for the week ahead. Simpson who has teamed up with the Mania-o-roto troop said she felt a bit nervous as the lone West Coast scout, but her fellow tent-mates welcomed her on arrival, so the nerves quickly disappeared. “I am really looking forward to doing the amazing race activity tomorrow. I am not exactly sure what it will involve, but I’ll figure

it out,” she said. In the next-door tent Sabrina Cassineri, Ella Mackenzie and Emily Bulman are sharing with two others. “Sabrina is the organised one out of all of us, she has taken charge of our tent,” said fellow tent-mate Amie Brownie. Feeding over 500 people is a big ask, but cooks Jim Anderson and Don Sargent and quartermaster Todd Lewis have their part of the operation well under control. Anderson, who has been vol-

unteering at the camp since 1996 said he gets a lot out of his time at Staveley. He also pointed out that the camp is unique in that the meals are cooked for the attendees, the leaders and scouts don’t have to do it themselves, he said. “This is a very enjoyable thing to be doing, and it is all for the kids,” he said. Joyce Gray and Deputy Mayor Liz McMillan were among those asked to speak at the official camp opening on Saturday evening.

Gray, whose late husband first came up with idea of a local adventure camp 40 years ago, said she was so proud to see the camp still carrying on all these years later. “John had a dream that Mania-o-roto could handle running a camp like this, and he was right. It is wonderful to see it still going today.” McMillan, whose son attended the last camp and had a great time, told the assembled scouts to have a great time and to make lots of friends.

Health care doesn’t stop when the holidays begin

Sue Fowlie, clinical director of the Rakaia Medical Practice.

Half the world might be on holiday over the summer, but not Ashburton’s health care providers. Care is always available around the clock and if people need health advice, all they need to do is ring their general practice team and their call will be answered 24/7, says Sue Fowlie clinical director of the Rakaia Medical Practice and member of the Canterbury Clinical Network Alliance leadership team. “Sometimes the call may take a little while to answer, but stay on the line. Some practices have extended hours, so if you call late in the day, you may be able to talk to your own practice team. Otherwise it will be diverted and answered by a health professional who will offer advice and suggest where to get care if appropriate,” she said. The Ashburton Service Level Alliance (ASLA), has a range of care options that are available around the clock and ensuring people were able to access care when and where they needed was top priority for the general practice teams and the district’s wider health care community. The alliance worked towards ensuring people had access to appropriate and sustainable health services, Fowlie said.

“Its overall aim is to provide better, more timely care for the people of Ashburton, regardless of who is providing the care.” Ashburton’s health services and health providers across the Ashburton district had worked together with the community to ensure it was easy for patients to enrol with a new practice or to transfer between practices, she said.

Patients also had the right to change GPs or practices and they should not feel uncomfortable about doing this, she said. “GPs just want to know that people are getting the care they need and won’t be offended if you transfer to another doctor. It’s all about the patient feeling comfortable and not delaying their care.” Consultations may not always be face-to-face now as many

Its overall aim is to provide better, more timely care for the people of Ashburton, regardless of who is providing the care. And that meant when someone contacted a practice to enrol, but that practice was full, they would be helped to find another general practice team that suited their needs. “If a practice isn’t taking new patients, it will be in the best interest of everyone, as it’s not safe for a practice to have too many patients to care for. But, there will always be another option, which can be worked out with the patient,” Fowlie said.

practices offered appointments by telephone and/or video, When patients contacted their practice they would be offered the options that best suits their need. For example if it’s just a prescription that is required often it can be sent straight to the pharmacy; if you have Covid-19 symptoms precautions can be put in place, such as PPE and meeting you at a different entrance or other issues can safely be checked via a video or phone consult.

School’s in for the summer By Heather Mackenzie heather.m@theguardian.co.nz

Summer time in Methven means Methven Summer School, a time when more than 200 people from as far afield as Blenheim and the West Coast spend the five days learning cool stuff. New courses this year American barbeque, basket weaving, print making and knitting have been brought in to add to the tried and true courses like golf, cheese making, and sausage making. “The sour dough and pastries course sold out on the first day and we could have filled the basket weaving ten times over,” Methven Summer School chairperson Sandy Redmond said. Singing Basics tutor Kath Woodley is happy to be involved with the Summer School for the first time. “I heard there wasn’t much music stuff going on and I thought to myself ‘I can fix that’ so here I am.” Jan Middleton said she wanted to push herself beyond her comfort zone and decided singing in front of others was a good way to do it. “I really only sing sitting on the lawnmower with my headphones on or in the car. I have no idea if I can sing or not, but then I am just doing this for myself anyway.” Middleton may be outside of her comfort zone, but she said the class of five other fellow singers are all really supportive of each other. Breaking for morning tea Middleton said she had learnt something new already. “Kath told us that what we hear when we sing, is not the same as what others hear. Which makes sense as when you hear your voice on the answer phone you think ‘do I really sound like that?’.”

Methven Summer School Singing Basics tutor Kath Woodley is teaching her class how important relaxed muscles and controlled breathing are to singing. PHOTO HEATHER MACKENZIE As well as a supportive atmosphere the summer school is also famous for the scones, jam and cream at morning tea time. This year Methven local and renowned baker, Pam McKay put her hand up to bake the scones. This is quite a big task in itself as she will bake between 48 and 60 scones

per day. “Pam offered her help if we needed it, I am not sure she meant this much help though,” Redmond said. “We also want to thank Mount Hutt College for their continued support. If it wasn’t for them we could not run the Summer

School at all.” “The woodwork room and the kitchen are facilities that we simply couldn’t replicate away from here.” Summer School co-ordinator Julia Papek said she will be updating their facebook page with images and daily snippets.

Brexit: UK-EU deal hurts NZ RNZ The meat industry is urging the government to fight new quotas for local exporters as part of new trade deal between the UK and European Union. The post-Brexit agreement will mean access will be more controlled. A new quota will force Kiwi sheep and beef exporters to split their product between the UK and EU, even if one of the markets is not going well. Meat Industry Association chief executive Sirma Karapeeva said it was a major step back in trade. She said not only would farmers get lower returns, they may not get market access rights guaranteed by the World Trade Organisation. Beef and Lamb chief executive Sam McIvor told Morning Report prior to Brexit there was 228,000 tonnes of sheep meat access into the EU, including the UK, and 1300 tonnes of high-quality beef. “What’s happening with those quotas is that they now have roughly been split 50/50 between the UK and the EU so overnight we’ve had a significant reduction in the flexibility and the value that we can accrue from those quotas because we’ve lost the flexibility to put product into either the EU or the UK as customers demand it.” He said the export markets were massively important to New Zealand.

“What we’ll see here is potentially reductions in export revenue to New Zealand. “That affects farmers, it affects rural communities and that knocks on to every community in New Zealand.” McIvor said there was fear there would be future tariffs for importers like those in New Zealand. Beef and Lamb are calling for flexibility in the quota. He said the government had done a great job advocating on the behalf of exporters and Beef and Lamb now expected the EU and UK to live up to their word that New Zealand would be no worse off under Brexit. Trade and Export Growth Minister Damien O’Connor said he did not expect any more tariffs. He said New Zealand was in trade negotiations with both the UK and EU. “We have a great team of trade negotiators, we’re upfront, we’re honest, and we will do our very best to make sure our exporters get at least the equivalent deal that we’ve had and where even possible a better deal.” He said the government was aware of the potential split in quotas and had been trying to assure the UK and EU the flexibility would assist their producers so that there was not oversupply at certain times of the year and undersupply at others.

A new quota will force Kiwi sheep and beef exporters to split their product between the UK and EU, even if one of the markets is not going well.

Farmers urged to have good stock welfare plans RNZ The government spent $19 million in 2020 on rural communities affected by drought. The Ministry for Primary Industries said some of the money went into feed planning and co-ordination services, with an additional $350,000 allocated to extend the service until the end of June this year. The director of animal health and welfare was advising farmers to ensure they had good plans for

managing stock welfare as summer sets in. Weather forecasters said the La Niña weather pattern could mean below-average rainfall for parts of the South Island and lower North Island in the weeks ahead. The most likely affected areas would be west and south of Christchurch, with a more humid than average summer, according to the Crown Research Institute’s latest Seasonal Climate Outlook. Dr Chris Rodwell, who was

also the Ministry for Primary Industries’ veterinarian, said most farmers were good at managing year-round weather extremes, but right now the priority was on ensuring that stock had access to shelter and water. “A good plan will reduce stress and ensure that the dry summer will not impact on the following season’s production.” As the fire season set in, Dr Rodwell said it was important to have a proper evacuation plan in place for staff and livestock.

“If it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for your animals.” He said if farmers had to evacuate, but could not take stock with them, then they needed to leave open gates, and ensure stock had access to water. Dr Rodwell said livestock needed to be safe from heat and cold stress, with dairy cows more sensitive to heat than cold. He added that a good idea during summer was to graze cows close to the dairy shed, to reduce walking distances for milking

and allow them to move at their own pace. It was also wiser to milk cows later in the afternoon or early evening when the temperature has dropped, provide supplementary feed at night and provide shade or use a sprinkler system in the dairy yard, while cows waited to be milked. Dr Rodwell said dairy cows could each drink more than 100 litres a day in summer, so it was imperative they had access to clean drinking water.

Some positives in 2020 and challenges ahead By ECan Councillor John Sunckell None of us imagined, as we sat down to Christmas dinner just over 12 months ago, what was to unfold in front of us with Covid-19. We knew, as always, that climatic events could create problems as the significant rainfall events of December and February showed with damage to our main stem rivers and surrounds. The costs and challenges of those events are still at the forefront of our minds, but more on that later. As we began the year we worked through the refresh of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy, this was to ensure that we were still looking to achieve the right balance of outcomes for the environment and the community. This also gave us the opportunity to consult with the various Canterbury communities to fill in some gaps leading out to 2030. Covid then raised its head and the world of Level 4 lockdowns, Zoom and team meetings became the norm. Within a week or so staff were working from home and the essential services continued. We cannot thank staff enough for their efforts as productivity assessments showed that through the lockdown period there were no losses. The challenges of Covid meant some programmes of work could not be done,

but if there was a silver lining the money saved there rolled through into the 2021 annual plan and we could significantly minimise the rate rise for next year. As mentioned before, one of the real challenges for us was to get into the rivers such as the Rakaia, Rangitata and Waitaki where there was significant damage to be repaired.

Covid meant that we could not get in when we wanted with the rivers at low flows to further shore up the stopbanks and bunds. Covid meant that we could not get in when we wanted with the rivers at low flows to further shore up the stopbanks and bunds. The positive side of Covid is that we have received significant money from Central Government Covid and Green funds to help with the work required on the Rangitata and Waitaki rivers.

ECan Councillor John Sunckell warns there’s some more challenges ahead this year. This is almost a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get stuff done without the total impost falling on ratepayers and scheme members. This does though create a challenge, as we are required to fund a third of the expenditure, but with the millions involved we just need to do it. Along with this funding we have also received a large share of the Shovel Ready funding for wilding pine programmes. We have been successful with these business case applications because we have good people implementing these programmes and showing what can be done. To the future, the Long Term Plan will be released in about March and you will all be challenged by what you will see.

Much of the work and cost is stuff that we are required to do, but some is not. I ask that when it comes out you read it, understand it and make submissions. The last big challenges we face in the New Year are the new freshwater rules. We still do not fully understand the implications as a regulator and won’t until the Government make some firm decisions. In simple terms our CWMS rules have been about outputs, the Government is about input controls, so which ever way things land rural Canterbury and its provincial towns have some real challenges facing them. We can only hope that the New Year cannot be as bad as this last one and that there is at the least some normality involved.

OUR VIEW

Water decline a pressing issue for all By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

A

nother summer and another round of health warnings in our waterways. Like fire restrictions they are becoming all too commonplace. I’m no scholar in this field, but I would assume we are just more aware and our testing more stringent to know where and when they are present. The algal blooms have been there before, they’re just more prominent now because we are more aware. In the bad old days people would have just turned up to these swimming spots and dived on in. If there was a murky spot or something untoward, you would have kept your distance – or thrown stones at it. Times have changed, and so must we. The degradation of our waterways is a pressing issue, for everyone. It’s easy to pick up the stick of blame and bash the farmers. While they come under the microscope and are under ever-increasing legislation, they are just one factor in the big picture. The latest case in Mid Canterbury is Lake Clearwater which, due to various factors, is not living up to its name and has a health warning in place. A popular holiday spot it has likely been impacted by historic farming practices. But there are also impacts from boaties, freedom campers, septic tank leakage, wildlife and the fact we are coming off a dry winter. The factors all add up. So rather than one camp pointing the finger at another, a collaborative approach is required. After all we are in a climate emergency, announced by Environment Canterbury in May last year and the new government in December. What exactly this means I’m still not sure, and not sure if they know exactly either, other than the fact that things need to change. Both governing bodies already have put measures in place to help reverse the degradation and improve the quality of our waterways. Water is our most important asset. The majority of the rural community is already working hard to reverse historic impacts and reduce its impacts on the environment – either by choice or by law. Instead of looking over the fence at the farmers, clean up your own backyard first. It’s time for the urban community to rise to the challenge as well.

CLUB NEWS Ashburton Golf Club

Happy new year to everyone, life at the Brandon has been a bit slow over the holiday period. With a few players holidaying away and two below par weather days, it seems that just about everyone is still in with a shout of qualifying for the Property Brokers Shootout Final. The results so far, are on your Golf NZ website (where you find your handicap) under Competitions. I will make sure that a full list is on show at the club for Saturday, so you can see where you sit before teeing off. Bev Chinn still sits top of the pile with 80 points and is surely through to another final. Blair Snowball and Grant Smith both have 78 points and look safe and big boomer Craig Bain has 77 which should just do him. At the moment Mr Property Brokers himself Hamish Niles is in 18th place with 73 points, but, as I believe that he is unavailable this Saturday, he will more than likely slip out of contention. Presently 71 points gets into the top 19, but with many players sat outside with one good score, this Saturday will be a big moving day. Best thing to do is pop along and score yourself a steady 42 points then relax.

Ryan Wareing had 2/16. Mid Canterbury then hammered North Otago in Kaiapoi on Tuesday. Again batting first, Mid Canterbury made 97/7 led by a late partnership between Geordie Pavey (21) and Archie Nijjar (17*). Defending the total, Mid Canterbury ripped through the North Otago top order, reducing them to 5/5 after six overs. Mid Canterbury soon wrapped up the win dismissing North Otago for 15 for an 82-run win. Wareing had 3/8 while there were two wickets each from Richan (2/2) and Hislop (2/1). In the fourth round they lost to Christchurch Black by 102 runs in Rangiora. Black made 122/5 batting first and then rolled Mid Canterbury for 20 in 11.5 overs. Today Mid Canterbury squares off against Canterbury Country White and South Canterbury. Today Mid Canterbury squares off against Canterbury Country White and South Canterbury. The teams are then split into the playoff brackets for 40 over matches, with the top four vying for the Sir Jack Newman Trophy. Teams ranked 5-8 play for the Derek Cockburn Shield and the other teams compete for the Neville Hoskin Plate.

After the Top 19 are sorted, some wag will knock up a racing form, we will have an auction, maybe after Opening day golf, then the Property Brokers 2021 Shootout Final will be held on Sunday January 24. This is always great fun. Other news, we are now taking entries for two major tournaments. Firstly the Hydraulink Brandon Open, 36 holes of stroke play, on Saturday January 30. This is open to all affiliated club members. Gross prizes and nett prizes in grades. The course will be set up tough, it will be a great test of your skills. Secondly we have the world famous Harvey Norman Classic coming around quickly. This is being played on the weekend of February 13 and 14. Now this has been full the last couple of years with over 200 players, so you need to get your entries in early, or you may not get your preferred tee off time. Great format, great prizes, great fun. Entry forms to both tournaments are on the website, or just give the club a call. As I am writing this my mind wanders back to last year, and some of the economic turmoil that we have gone through, so again I must put out a massive thanks to all our valuable sponsors. We see the three coming up in the next six weeks Property Brokers, Hydraulink, and Harvey Norman, but we have many, many more who sponsor games, give nearest pin prizes and purchase signage. Please keep your eyes and ears open when at the club, and if you visit these companies, just mention you are from the golf club and thank them for their ongoing help. Show them that sponsorship is a two-way street. May your 2021 be filled with Joy, love and straight drives. Good golfing.

SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN

Success for northern raider A busy couple of weeks has ended in the best possible fashion for Jay Abernethy. The Auckland horseman has campaigned a team on the grass track circuit over the holiday period, including Westport, Reefton, Tauherenikau, and finally Otaki on Monday, where he won four of the five races on the dual-code card. He started off the day reining home the Adrienne Matthews-trained Alta Madeira to win the Wallace Construction Mobile Pace (2000m) by a neck, before he was back in the winner’s circle two races later with his own horse, Adieu Flirt, who took out The Anchorage Bed And Breakfast Waitarere Beach Mobile Pace (2000m). “Adieu Flirt has been racing well,” Abernethy said. “She went one bad race down at Westport and in all of her other races she went quite good. “We were quite pleased with

the way that she improved each time and she happened to win on the day where the stakes were the biggest, which was really good.” Abernethy recorded another win as a trainer when Jacob Wallace drove Maria Kirilenko to a neck victory in the Grant Plumbing Mobile Pace (2000m). Abernethy bred and co-owns the daughter of Sportswriter with local trainer Eddie Phelan, and Abernethy was delighted to get the win with his close friend on his home track. “Eddie and I race and breed a few,” Abernethy said. “She got beaten a nose there last year, so it was quite good to get the win there today on his (Phelan’s) home track. “It was a weakish field, so with the right run she was always a chance to get some of it. “The way the race panned out, it suited her right to the ground.” Abernethy rounded out the day in the cart, winning the Bounda-

biggest supporters of the Central Districts and grass track racing and he said it is a good change in scenery for his team. “You can place the horses a little bit easier,” Abernethy said. “Some horses that have been struggling a little bit at Auckland and Cambridge, they grow a leg in the Central Districts. “These have been our only grass track meetings in the North Island for the season, so hopefully next season we can get a few more grass tracks.” Abernethy is looking forward to getting home after a long couple of weeks, but he is already contemplating his next southern assault with his team. “These ones are all going home now,” Abernethy said. “We did think about Nelson, but it will be good to get home tonight. “I may still send some down to Blenheim, I will just see how they come through this run.”

AUSTRALIAN TRIP

Concert Hall eyes Aussie riches Cambridge trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood are still coming down from the high of winning the Gr.1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) with Concert Hall at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, and they are now looking at international targets with the mare. The daughter of Savabeel has been in faultless form this season, winning three of her five starts, including the Zabeel Classic, Gr.2 Tauranga Stakes (1600m), and Gr.3 Thompson Handicap (1600m), while she has placed in her two other starts, including the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m). Her trainers are now weighing up their options with the mare, but a trip across the Tasman to try and plunder Australian spoils is on the horizon. “She has been really well after her win in

M7

the Zabeel Classic,” James said. “We are a little bit undecided as to what we do with her. I will most likely incorporate an Australian trip. “There are a number of options over there, but she will have another run in New Zealand and then work from there.” One of those New Zealand targets could be the Gr.1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham on January 21. While looking forward to tackling some Australian features with the Joan Egan bred and owned six-year-old, James’ focus this week is on Ruakaka on Thursday where stable runners Apostrophe and Punchline could make their raceday debuts in the Northland Business Systems (1400m) and Fell Engineering (1400m) respectively. Both three-year-olds take trial placings into

their respective assignments, however, James said Punchline could bypass Thursday as a result of her drawing wide in barrier 16. “Looking at the draw for Punchline, they are a doubtful starter,” he said. “While Apostrophe is a progressive filly that keeps on improving, so I am looking forward to her debut on Thursday.” Meanwhile, Group One performer Two Illicit’s preparation hit a snag last month and she now won’t be seen on raceday until Autumn. “She has just a little hiccup in training, but will be back in about 10 days,” James said. “She will have had about three weeks off. “Because we have missed a little bit of ground with her, it will probably be mid to late autumn now before we get started. I haven’t really set a target for her at this stage.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Early on, distractions abound, and it feels impossible to get anything accomplished. Don’t fight the flow. Relax and wait for the productive hours that open up in the evening. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You don’t always get a choice in the company you keep, but today, you absolutely have control over the social lineup, and your preference will make the day most enjoyable. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You wanted it to be one way, and therefore, you saw it that way for a time. Delusion is a natural stage of the learning process. Then came an awakening, and now you’re in the readjustment. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Something comes up to remind you of honour’s role in day-to-day life. Your personal honour code is unique, but what’s not unique is how living by it is absolutely crucial to your sense of self. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll have a degree of control over people’s perceptions. Avoid talking about yourself. Think of a way to get others to do the talking for you. Is there something akin to promotional material you can send ahead? VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Happiness is an off-menu item and can’t be ordered up. So just order something likely to fortify you, and, if you’re lucky, the chef will send out a surprise side dish of happiness on the house. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Be careful what you wish for, as you’ll get it quickly – especially if a Leo has anything to do with it. Social stars are on the rise. New people add a flirtatious excitement to the mix. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Something you tucked away will now have a perfect use. It makes you think that you’re a bit psychic, and indeed, you have an excellent sense of what you’ll need in the future. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You’re in a rebellious mood, but don’t rebel against your own better angels. You can go off in the direction of freedom and do the righteous thing all at the same time. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): When you try to tame that wild part of you, you meet yourself with stubborn opposition. No one can resist you like you! Counterintuitively, the way to get yourself in line is to allow more leeway. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): All your searching ends back at you. You journey to reach this destination and that, but the prize is always the same: a deeper knowing of who you are and always were. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Enthusiasm is omnidirectional. You don’t choose a target on which to place your support. Rather, you stand in the middle and give something to anyone who needs it.

A ridge of high pressure lies over northern and central New Zealand on Wednesday while a slow moving front affects the lower South Island. The front moves slowly up the South Island on Thursday, and across the North Island late Thursday through Friday, followed by an associated area of low pressure. A ridge gradually builds in behind over the country this weekend as the low weakens and moves away.

MIDWEEK SPORT

Mason takes NY honours Intermediate winner Peter Guiney and senior winner Bill Mason after a successful day in the Tinwald Golf Club’s New Year’s tournament.

By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Bill Mason has added another accolade to his long list of wins on the Tinwald Golf Club course. Mason took out the senior men’s section of the club’s annual New Year’s Tournament at the

weekend. Inclement weather had forced the club to shift the tournament from Saturday to Sunday, but the delay did not impact the turnout as a capacity field of 113 players lined up their tee shots at midday. Considering the amount of rain prior to Sunday, the course

was in superb condition for the stableford tournament. Mason finished with a score of 40 to take out the senior men’s honours. He was closely followed by Alex Roa (39), Pete Marshall (38) and Brent Green (37). Pete Guiney came out on top in the intermediate men’s grade

when he carded 45 stableford points. Neill Connelly settled for second with 35 while Blair Wederell and Shane Webster both had 39 to be tied for third. It was much tighter in the women’s field with a five-way tie on 38 stableford points. Maree Moore took the win on

a countback from Joan Undy, Colleen Linney, Marilyn Bennett, and Judy Webb. Coming up: The club’s twilight competition on Thursday nights resumes this week and the third round of the Four Square Cup is on January 16. Full results, page 25
