MULTI CULTURAL BITE

By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton’s Multi Cultural Bite looks set to stay in the Ashburton Domain. For the 12th annual Waitangi Day commemoration event, the trustees of Ashburton Multi Cultural Trust were forced into a shift from Baring Square East due to ongoing construction in the Ashburton CBD. The new venue at the Ashburton Domain proved to be even more popular and prompted plenty of positive comments from the thousands of attendees. Chair of Ashburton Multi Cultural Trust, Thelma Bell, was delighted with the success of this year’s event. “It proved such a wonderful venue that we were thinking we should have moved there a long time ago,” Bell said. Bell said they were so pleased with the outcome that they have already written to Ashburton District Council asking to book the venue for Waitangi Day 2022.

Waitangi vibe returns to Hakatere Marae By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

The Waitangi vibe is back at the Hakatere Marae after a successful Waitangi at the Pa event on Saturday. Hakatere Maori Marae Komiti and Waitangi at the Pa subcommittee chair, Celia Colcord, was thrilled with how celebrations went as hundreds marked Waitangi Day at the marae event that focused on whanau and celebrating New Zealand’s diverse culture. Colcord said that coming from the far north, Waitangi Day is a revered occasion

and Saturday’s celebrations gave her that feeling. When, the Waitangi Day celebrations at the marae were revived three years ago, Colcord attended and said they didn’t feel right, but this year “it really did have that Waitangi Day vibe”. “It felt how it should be,” she said. Her feelings were backed up by comments from a visitor from the far north who told Colcord the event really had that Waitangi event feel. “We celebrate Waitangi quite hugely in the North Island, but coming to the Hakatere Marae three years ago my first experience there wasn’t fantastic at all so to get

that feedback from a fellow mum from the far north was superb. “It was what Waitangi Day should be all about. “We have lifted it another level so I am so proud for us to get that feedback.” The marae offered a number of activities with the water slide proving popular in the heat and a hotly contested tug-owar. There were local community stalls as well as live band performances. Colcord thanked the sponsors and volunteers for their efforts to make the day such a great occasion, and was already looking froward to making next year bigger and better.

stay in domain Moving away from Baring Square provided more space for the event, offering a more relaxed picnic feel, that suits the food festival event, Bell said, and better parking options. Any concerns about the move impacting the turn-out were quickly quashed as people started rolling in. “The crowds started coming in and then it was non-stop selling the tickets. It was just go, go, go.” More than 12,000 bite tickets were sold, representing an increase of around 20 per cent on last year’s figures. The event had a record 30 stalls, representing many of the major regions from around the world – from the Pacific, South East Asia, Africa, South Asia, and Latin America – with each showcasing their traditional cuisine. “We tried to make sure there was no duplication across the menus and so each stall was unique.” All the food and beverage sold was home-made, and stallholders represented their country of origin rather than any commercial concerns.

The day kicked off with a karakia and the singing of the national anthem, marking the significance of Waitangi Day. Throughout the event the crowds were entertained by a feast of music and dance, all provided by local performers, ranging from pipe bands to belly dancers. The event was supported by Eco Educate and Envirowaste who ensured as much waste as possible was diverted from landfill, with the bags of used cardboard bowls from feasting at the event taken away for composting. The Red Cross provided free water, the Cancer Society free sunscreen, and the Kidney Foundation with St John also provided free blood pressure readings. Bell said an army of volunteers helped before, during, and after the event to ensure its smooth running, and many local businesses offered sponsorship in kind. The Multi Cultural Bite was also the recipient of an Ashburton District Council grant.

Waitangi market keen to make changes permanent By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

The annual Waitangi Day market, had a name and venue change this year and both are likely to be permanent. Just like the Multi Cultural Bite, the Waitangi on East market was forced to move to the Ashburton Domain this year due to the CBD redevelopment. However, after a successful day on Saturday, organiser Carol Johns is planning a permanent relocation. “I have a pretty good feeling we will be remaining in the domain. “The feedback I got was that it was a fantastic atmosphere. “The shade from the trees meant people could sit down and we noticed a lot more people sitting down under the trees relaxing, and a lot of people stayed around for a long time.

ent at Hakatere Marae.

“I do think it’s just a nicer venue. “I’ll be definitely staying put as it’s a great wee spot.” The only negative feedback was the distance between the market and the Multi Cultural Bite, Johns said, which while it was only a short walk through the domain unlike when the two events were side-byside on East Street. Johns said with 35 stalls it was down a few on previous years. “Mainly because it took me longer to get organised this year.” Another key factor was the number of other events on across Canterbury and the South Island over the weekend, she said. “We still had great crowds, and I was talking to a lot of people from out of town.” The added bonus of the new location in the domain was catching a lot of State Highway 1 traffic, Johns said, catching people passing through.

Garden contest under threat By Malcolm Hopwood

This weekend will be disappointing for Joy Jaine. The second weekend in February is traditionally when the Ashburton Horticultural Society judges the street garden competition, but, in 2021, it’s unlikely to happen. The society is down to 15 members and, if they can’t attract new recruits, they’ll have to wind up. The horticultural society was established in 1895 when the town was starting to grow. The annual street garden competition also has some history, it started in 1964. “Its purpose is to highlight Ashburton’s beautiful gardens and reward the owners for taking pride in them,” Joy says. “But we can’t do it. We don’t have the numbers.” She explains it’s not a matter of judging entries on the day. The competition is far more extensive than that. In the days leading up to judging, members drive down every street and cul-de-sac in town looking at front gardens. There are two and sometimes three people in the car, a driver and two spotters assessing the gardens. They then shortlist them for a second group to come and draw up provisional winners and placegetters in several categories. RIGHT – Joy Jaine grows impressive calla lillies.

On the day, judges from the Christchurch Beautifying Society will confirm the choices and put them in their own order. It’s a logistical undertaking but this year Joy and her team can’t do it anymore. “Some of our people are very elderly and we don’t have the resources to drive around Ashburton and do the preparation work,” Joy says. In the meantime, they’ll continue to meet monthly in the pavilion opposite Ashburton College but, if there are no new faces, they’ll consider closing down by the end of the year. Joy regrets the uncertain future. As well as the garden competition, the monthly meetings are valuable to share knowledge, seek advice, listen to speakers or bring along a sickly plant that needs diagnosis. There’s even a table competition where blooms are judged. “I don’t want the society to go into recess. We’ve appealed for new members, but without success,” she says. Joy points out that Ashburton’s gardeners will be as disappointed as they are. But she remains optimistic. With fresh impetus, the garden competition won’t be abandoned. It could be held in autumn. “We have the structure in place and know what works.” Nature just needs some helpers. Joy can be contacted on 308-9955. PHOTO SUPPLIED

SCAMMER ALERT

Latest scam comes from NZTA imposters Scammers are at it again. The latest virtual identity theft comes from scammers posing as the New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA). People from around the country are being told their registration is due. The scam includes a button or link where you can renew online which, in turn, takes you to a fake website. The website asks you for payment and your driver’s licence details. NZTA warned people last year but the scammers are trying once more. To protect yourselves against bogus emails, NZTA reminds you to check the rego expiry date on the label in your vehicle. If the scam doesn’t have an expiry date or match your label, it’s a fake.

Karen Burrowes

The NZTA website gives an example of what a scam registration looks like and asks people to let them know so they can keep track of the sophisticated operation. However if people realise they’ve been deceived, they should contact their bank immediately to stop suspicious payment. Only last month, Ashburton BNZ Manager, Karen Burrowes, warned that “scamming has never been more serious than right at the moment”. “Scamming is on the increase. It’s concerning us and other banks. Scamming attempts are occurring hundreds of times throughout Mid Canterbury during the week,” Burrowes said. As well as emails, scammers ring peo-

ple at home representing Spark, IRD or CourierPost with parcels that need to be picked up on receipt of money. The fraudulent calls from Spark relate to fictitious computer problems where bank account details are requested, or the caller asks for authority to take over a computer to solve the problem. “They sound very authentic, so be wary,” Karen warns. Now add NZTA scammers to the list. Karen says if callers sound suspicious or too good to be true, hang up. If the calls are bank related, then decline, but if the customer unwittingly passes on details, people should ring their bank immediately and block their credit card and account details.

Breaking down sheep milk barriers By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz

Seeing a huge potential for sheep milking, Mid Canterbury businessman Matt Jones has announced plans for his company Sheep Milk New Zealand to establish a purpose-built sheep milk drier in the district. Expected to start producing milk powder in the final quarter of 2022, the factory will be capable of processing the milk of 30,000 sheep, Jones said. “So we need more sheep and suppliers,” he told a field day at his property at Kirwee near Darfield where he and his wife Tracey have their own sheep milking flock. Jones declined to comment on the factory’s location, but said that coming from Mid Canterbury had helped sway the decision to site it in the district. It was also a central location. The Joneses already operate businesses in Mid Canterbury, in-

cluding agricultural recruitment and an agri-training facility at the site of the former Winchmore Research Station. Jones said that a lack of largescale sheep milk processing had been holding the industry back in Canterbury, which is why he had decided to invest in infrastructure. A small spray drier was purchased 18 months ago. Sheep Milk NZ was developing its own range of value-added products, while also supplying the raw product to other manufacturers. Sheep Milk NZ marketing manager Virna Smith said there was a growing market for sheep milk, both domestically and internationally, as consumers sought alternatives to bovine dairy. Dairy products being sold under its Jones Family Farm brand included the cheeses creamy havarti, aged cheddar, classic gouda and creamy blue. Future ranges included ultra high temperature (UHT) treated long life milk, in-

fant formula and nutraceuticals. Its sabelle skin and body care range, launched in December, was the first product using New Zealand sheep milk powder combined with active 16+ manuka honey. The range contains hand cream, body lotion, body wash, body butter and soap. Jones said Sheep Milk NZ would work with NZ Dairy Collaborative, a milk powder blending and canning plant at the Ashburton Business Estate of which former Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay is a director and shareholder. The Dairy Collaborative plant is certified to manufacture cow, goat and sheep milk powder-based products. “There are commercial aspects in terms of Sheep Milk NZ that we can’t declare yet as we are still getting our ducks in a row, but from a breeding and milking sheep aspect we are an open book.” After about eight years of sheep breeding, the Joneses started milking in August 2019 at Kirwee,

and this year are milking 600 ewes through a herringbone shed. Their Strathclyde stud is using east friesian and lacaune milking sheep breeds as well as assessing other overseas genetics and domestic breeds to produce a hardy animal more suited to South Island conditions and outdoor farming. Sheep Milk NZ has one other farmer supplier, increasing to five from next spring. In a survey carried out in July 2020, New Zealand had 18 commercial sheep dairy farms with the national flock totalling 12,345. Existing sheep milk producers in Canterbury predominantly supply cheese makers or make their own product. A NZ Food Innovation Network report last year said that while exports of sheep milk products were currently valued at about $20 million, expanding the industry through the production of high value products such as infant formula had potential to increase

the sector’s economic contribution to $250m in 2024. While milking sheep is a relatively new industry in New Zealand sheep have been milked worldwide for thousands of years, being especially popular in Europe and Middle Eastern countries. Milk from sheep has a different nutritional makeup to that of cows. Sheep only produce A2 milk whereas cows can produce A1 or A2. The milk is naturally homogenised, meaning smaller fat globules that make for creamier milk that is easier to digest. Jones said that while there were a lot of claims that sheep milking was more environmentally friendly than bovine dairy farming, there was a lack of data, so he had engaged Lincoln-based The AgriBusiness Group to assess this. It would compare the environmental and social impacts of sheep milk production in New Zealand compared with cow and plant-based milk.

Dogs tear up the showgrounds By Maddison Gourlay maddison.g@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury Dog Club members are hailing their latest event – the Mid Canterbury Dog Agility Championships – a success. The club held the two-day event over the long weekend on both Saturday and Sunday catering for dogs of all ages, breeds and ability levels. With close to 300 dogs taking part over the two days, there was plenty to keep a handle (or leash) on, but Mid Canterbury Dog Club’s Debbie Woods said the weekend went off without a hitch. The championships were all about agility as the entries whipped their way around the obstacle course and then jumps in the fastest time possible. Woods said a good crowd of spectators showed up to take in the action which in turn they hoped would attract new members to the club.

OUR VIEW

Time to sing the praises of the Ashburton Domain By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

I

t’s a match made in heaven and it can only be seen as great news for the future that both the Multi Cultural Bite and Waitangi at the Domain look set to remain firmly ensconced at the Ashburton Domain. Often it is lamented just how infrequently used one of the crowning gems of the Ashburton township, the domain, actually is. Tucked away largely out of sight to the casual passer-by, it’s seriously under-utilised and any events that can put a lock on calling the green, green grass of the domain home is a great step forward. Saturday’s bumper day was the perfect taste-tester. Not only did you have the sights, sounds and smells of the Multi Cultural Bite wafting through the air and the countless spending opportunities at Waitangi at the Domain but there was the perfect opportunity to take in all that the domain has to offer as well. With sport, both senior and junior, stretching from one end of the block to the other and everything else in between there was literally something for everyone. Organisers and the helpers of all events need to be applauded for putting together such a great occasion in which so many people, not only from our district, but further afield got a real taste of what Waitangi Day is all about – the coming together of everyday New Zealanders, irrelevant of race or religion. And so, we must now grow on this success story. Baring Square East is without doubt a great spot for an event – but it’s limited in both what it can provide and the space available, as well as access points for parking and walking to and from. The Ashburton District Council will have been watching on with great interest at how the two events went and looking at some of their own popular fixtures such as Light up the Night for potential relocation as well. And if Saturday’s success was anything to go by, then there shouldn’t be a need for discussion. It should just happen. Let’s start championing this wonderful asset we have in our community and put it to all the great use it’s intended for.

THE FEDS

Pluses and minuses By Andrew Hoggard FROM THE FARM

T

he recent Climate Change Commission report had in it some useful recommendations and themes along with other points that are questionable. Pleasingly, the report does not ignore, but also does not fixate, on agricultural emissions. The public discourse In New Zealand for decades has largely been that ‘agriculture is the number one issue and only farmers need to act’ but this report has moved on from that unhelpful rhetoric. This report makes clear that all New Zealanders and all sectors need to make changes to do our bit on global warming. Our media struggled to realise that. I’ve certainly taken plenty of phone calls from journalists since the report came out in which they appeared to still be fixated on farm emissions being the problem. But hopefully the point that action is needed from all of us will sink in over time as more people get their heads around what the Commission is saying. The report did a good job of splitting up the gases. It talked about the long-lived and the short-lived gases and distinguished between them. For a number of years now a

good number of the world’s top (actual) climate scientists, have been pointing out that shortlived flow gases like methane just need to stabilise or have a small reduction to ensure no additional atmospheric warming, but long-lived gasses like carbon dioxide (CO2) need to go to absolute zero. It was also pleasing to see that the report pointed out agriculture contributed only 18 per cent of New Zealand’s long-lived gases. In the past we have been bombarded with the 50 per cent number when they go and do the inaccurate conversion of methane into CO2 equivalents. We now just need the New Zealand government to stop using this outdated method of lumping all gases together, and to embrace the split gas approach, when presenting graphs and data on NZ’s national emissions inventory . Over the last few years the wholesale purchase of farmland to go into pine trees for carbon farming has been of major concern to rural communities. This report helpfully points out that we can’t keep doing that because it just temporarily masks the need to reduce CO2 emissions. However, it then falls down a bit by kicking the can down the road to 2050 to stop this use of offsetting, and still expects more afforestation to occur. There is mention of the need to recognise smaller planting in terms of offsetting, so that would be useful.

But I believe we are still ignoring the long-term consequences here in order to hit short-term targets. Other positive aspects of the report are that the commission recognises the need for more investment in agricultural research and development; that we need to consider the use of genetic technologies and how they may help us; that rural connectivity needs to be improved if farmers are to access technology and data that will help them monitor and reduce on-farm emissions. And the Commission also acknowledged that New Zealand farmers are already leading the world in terms of low emissions per kilogram of meat and milk produced, which did make the chair’s comment to media comparing farmers to whalers rather odd, and quite frankly very disappointing. Where does the report not sit well with me? Well, obviously the area that got the most attention was around cutting livestock numbers. It’s important to get the context of that section. The com-

mission in our initial reading was saying that it is expecting drops in livestock numbers due to land use change that has been occurring, and from other government policies such as water regulations, but also expects production to remain the same given past efficiencies continuing. The Paris Agreement talks about the need to maintain food production to feed the growing world population. In further discussion of the report when the Commission was asked ‘what if we can’t maintain production, do we continue to cut?’, its view was that emission reductions should be prioritised over food production. This shows how in New Zealand, we continue to lose sight of what the long-term outcome is supposed to be and instead fixate on short-term targets. The planet’s population needs nutrition and while the bulk of that will come via plants, animal-sourced proteins play an important role in the provision of many of the essential nutrients. An individual may be able

to source what they need via plants alone but try to do that at a global scale and it’s clear that affordability and animal proteins have a key role to play. Given that it makes the most sense to do that animal agriculture where it can be done the most efficiently and affordably, the last place on the planet that should be cutting back its livestock population based solely on climate change reasons is New Zealand. Federated Farmers’ other main area of concern with this report is the methane targets. The science tells us the cuts being recommended are more severe than are needed for biogenic methane from our farms to have no additional warming impact. It’s important to note that the numbers in this report are not a review of the methane targets in the Zero Carbon Act; these will be reviewed in 2024. Farming nations around the world have more work to do to show political leaders a more accurate, science-led metric for measuring the different impacts of short and long-lived gases is fair and warranted. THE BIG DECISIONS

Don’t be afraid of making the big calls By Sahera Laing LIFE COACH

M

aking decisions isn’t always as easy as it may look. Okay, some are, but some of the bigger decisions can leave us undecided. What if we get it wrong? What if it upsets people, what if it doesn’t work out? The ‘what-ifs’ pile up and we walk away hoping someone else will decide for us. So, what stops us from making important decisions? FEAR It’s the fear of getting it wrong, upsetting someone, failing, embarrassment, possibly even succeeding. It’s easier to opt for no change. We know what we are going to get, it’s familiar even though it may be painful staying put. Have you ever found yourself too afraid to make a decision because of all the uncertainty that brings up?

Because making a decision cuts off all other possibilities and it means “commitment” to our choice. And when that “C” word comes up, we start to focus on the negative outcomes we might face. Our attention is drawn to the downside of that decision, rather than considering the positive results on offer. The prospect of adventure, growth, excitement, passion, creativity and freedom … all this stuff, gets pushed aside because they come with a tad too much uncertainty. But not deciding is a decision in itself! By not making a decision we immediately cut off all possibilities – negative and positive. We have decided to do nothing because it’s “comfortable” and requires no extra effort.

We are devoted to comfort. It’s safe, it’s warm and cosy … It’s boring. It’s uneventful. It stifles growth – and anything in nature not growing is dying (the ultimate cost).

So what is this indecision costing you? At the end of your life, will you have regret because of a decision you didn’t make?

Perhaps you didn’t decide to start that business, or to change that friend group, or shut that person out and invite that person in. And you did it all for the sake of perceived comfort. We are afraid to be honest. Afraid to move on, because we don’t want to offend anyone or experience shame. So much so, the only person we are really offending is ourselves. In fact, making the decision is the easy part. We do it in our heads all the time, but it’s following though that is more challenging. Taking the action is the hard bit, because you will probably get it wrong the first time. And this leads us to feel anxious, to feel fear. Well, get it wrong! Because we learn and grow

through experience. Experience is about making errors a lot of the time and then, finally, getting it right. Getting used to mistakes in order to gain the wisdom to succeed, reduces our anxiety. That wisdom helps us make better decisions in the future, so we can feel happier and continue to get more things right more consistently. Being too scared to make a decision is like holding your breath. You can only hold your breath for so long before it truly hurts. Breathe. Make a choice and then feel free to change your mind … often. Keep breathing. Sahera Laing Sahera Laing is a mental fitness consultant, columnist and speaker. OPEN DAY

Bridging the gap between rural and urban By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz

A Mid Canterbury dairy farm managed by Brent and Rebecca Miller is opening its gate to the public as part of the Open Farms day on Sunday February 21. River Terrace Dairy, at Ealing, is an 1150 cow dairy farm on the northern terrace of the Rangitata River. Rebecca Miller said they were participating in the Open Farms day to help bridge the gap between rural and urban. “I know a lot of people drive past the farm gate, but they don’t normally have access to come in and ask questions, have some fun and have a general look around.” Held nationally each year, Open Farms is aimed at helping Kiwis reconnect with the source of their food. The Millers will run one tour, starting at 10am and finishing at 12.30pm. Miller said people would be shown around the dairy, calf sheds, fruit plantings, machinery and more. “We’ll have some games to play and a safe tractor-trailer ride around the farm.” The Open Farms website provides resources for farmers to register their farm, set and track their visitor numbers and access a guide covering health and safety, activity ideas, checklists, and presentation tips. Canterbury farm for two years in a row, in 2019 and 2020, in the Dairy Business of the Year awards. They trademarked the word “farmily”, as they want to provide a safe and welcoming environment for their staff and others on farm. “Farmily is a living philosophy around how we treat each other on farm, the animals, the environment and anyone who comes into our business for any reason,” Miller said. To lower costs for staff, they have planted fruit and nut trees. While initial plantings are in the yard and calf paddock, they plan to plant more trees each year. “Many people plant natives in the corners, but we want the farm to be producing something that we can give away to the wider community in future.” They have also reduced working hours for staff to an average 40 to 41 hours a week. Miller will be outlining her “farmily” philosophy and how to attract and retain good staff at a series of Dairy Women’s Network workshops next month, including one at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on March 17. Currently lower order sharemilkers, from June 1 the Millers will enter an equity partnership with River Terrace Dairy owners Andrew and Rachele Morris and Bill Hogg. They are also contract milkers on an adjacent property Ealing Pastures. To register to visit a farm go to www. openfarms.co.nz.

SEED EXPORTS

Local seed exports on the increase The value of seed exports, predominantly grown in Canterbury, increased by 4.6 per cent in 2020 compared to a year earlier to record $250 million in receipts, according to the NZ Grain and Seed Trade Association. Latest data issued by StatsNZ, shows seed export values have grown 44 per cent from $173m five years ago. While New Zealand exports more than 30 different seed types internationally, pasture seed and vegetable seed were the key export categories. Ryegrass and clover seed provided $131m in sales. Vegetable seed namely carrot seed, radish and beet seed and other brassica seed contributed $114m. Cereal seed earned a further $5m. More than 80 per cent of New Zealand’s seed production is in the Canterbury region centred in and around the Ashburton district encompassing almost 40,000 hectares of certified crop. Key markets include Europe, Australia, the United States, China and Japan. Together they account

for around 75 per cent of total exports. Association general manager Thomas Chin said that despite the Covid-19 pandemic, New Zealand seed exports returned a fantastic result for the New Zealand economy which indicates the underlying importance of the sector to the country. “During the Covid-19 lockdown period, the seed trade was deemed an essential business and remained in operation to supply seed to both domestic and overseas markets. “Importantly the seed industry will remain a driving force in the government’s post-Covid economic recovery strategy.” Chin said that the key to fostering a healthy export pipeline was having access to the best seed for multiplication, plant breeding and research purposes. “The government’s imminent reform of the Plant Variety Rights Act will be critical to the sector’s future success and that of our farmers, growers and users of seed products and crops.”

LUDF

Local farm to host next demonstration day By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz

A Mid Canterbury farm is hosting the next Lincoln University Dairy Demonstration Farm (LUDF) field day on Tuesday February 23. The field day will be held at Balmaghie Farm, Frasers Road, Lagmhor.

LUDF supervisor Jeremy Savage said that the change of venue was a good opportunity to reach an audience that might not otherwise be able to get along to one of its quarterly focus days. Balmaghie, which is owned by Mark and Pennie Saunders and contract milked by Joseph Williams, was a high performing dairy farm while maintaining

a low environmental footprint, based on a similar system to LUDF. It generated high per cow production, despite being a low-supplement, low-cost farming operation. Balmaghie’s 700-cow herd produces more than 500kg of milksolids a cow. “It is good to be able to show-

case the similarities of this farm, compared with LUDF,” Savage said. Williams would be discussing how Balmaghie was planning to maintain high production using a pasture-based system while meeting the government’s synthetic nitrogen cap of 190kg a hectare which comes into force on July 1.

This would be followed by a wider discussion on nitrogen cap management tools and the options that are available for farmers. There would also be an update on the LUDF season to date and profitability. The field day runs from 10.15am to 1pm, followed by a light lunch.

Stags starting to roar CRICKET

Kruger was his usual flashy self. His 54 came off just 43 with some picture-perfect ball striking and excellent placement.

Richard Print was in fine form for Tech on the weekend claiming four wickets.

By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Victory on the weekend against Temuka has left the Tech Stags in a strong position as the South Canterbury senior cricket competition enters the final stretch. With just three weeks of regular season play remaining, the Tech side – in their first year in the competition – sit comfortably in third place on the ladder, a spot enhanced further by the fact they’ll sit out this weekend’s play, due to a bye caused by the defaulting Timaru side, who are out of the competition. But last Saturday’s five-wicket win over Temuka was just the sort of motivation the side needed as they prepare for two big games in

the final two rounds before the knockout – both of which could determine where they finish on the points table. Win both matches and there’s a good chance of a home semi-final, and even an outside chance of making the top two. And if they put more performances out in the middle like that of Saturday’s victory then there’s a real possibility of it happening. Tech were, quite simply put, excellent. They looked like a side who were growing alongside the competition as they become more and more accustomed to the style of 50-over play, compared to the 40-over matches they were playing last year. The heads stayed down and it

was more about doing the little things right, constantly, rather than relying on those one or two big moments to decide the outcome of a game. With the bat, it was one of the usual suspects – Des Kruger – who top-scored. But while he was again excellent, perhaps it was the innings of Ryan Bell that determined the match. Kruger was his usual flashy self. His 54 came off just 43 balls, with some picture-perfect ball striking and excellent placement. It’s what we’ve come to expect from him with the bat. He’s averaging 42 in this competition, with 378 runs from nine innings. Bell however was more traditional.

He looked more than happy to take his time, push the ball around and take the singles when they were on offer, courtesy of some strong running between the wickets. The 77 run-stand between he and Kruger was vital. Bell’s 51 came from 83 balls and featured four boundaries, and by the time he fell in the 34th over, the match was Tech’s to lose. Matthew Tait chipped in with a solid 23 and then Bevan Richan and Harry Jones saw the side home. Earlier in the match, a Richard Print seam-attack set the platform including a wicket in the first ball of the match. Print took two wickets in that opening over to have Temuka

in big trouble, before an 83-run third-wicket stand steadied the ship. Print came back late in the innings, in his second spell and claimed his two final wickets for the match but in between times, Sam Clark had caused plenty of problems. He took 3-23 in his six overs and cleaned up most of the Temuka middle order, and at one point sat on a hat-trick. The 192 runs on the board for Tech was probably never going to be enough, and although Clark’s wicket fell quickly at the top of the innings for the hosts, Callum Gallagher (23), Kruger, Bell and Tait did enough to let Richan and Jones guide their side home for a five-wicket victory in the 43rd over.

Double bronze for Lowry En route for a shot at further national glory, young cycling star Maddi Lowry is timing her run nicely. The Ashburton teen picked up two bronze medals at the Canterbury Track Cycling Championships the weekend before last at Christchurch’s Denton Oval. Her dual podium finishes were in the Women’s Sprints and the under-19 Women’s Points race, both held on the Saturday. In a fortnight, Lowry returns to Invercargill for the Vantage Elite and U19 Track National Championships – the scene where she won her first national title early last year. PHOTO SUPPLIED

COMM GAMES

Lake to host Games events? By Malcolm Hopwood A legend in Olympic and Commonwealth Games organisation says it’s not too late for Canterbury to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. And, if it does, Bruce Ullrich would like water sports staged at Lake Hood. The next Commonwealth Games will be held in Birmingham, England, next year, but the location for the 2026 Games has yet to be confirmed. He’s aware of interest from Hamilton in Canada, Sri Lanka and Victoria, but no final decision has been made. Ullrich has previously conveyed his thoughts to Kereyn Smith, the Secretary General of the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) who’s also regional Vice President for Oceania, and says she must act quickly in conjunction with Sport NZ. Bruce Ullrich was Vice

Chairman of the 1974 Commonwealth Games and has been Chef de Mission of three Commonwealth and Olympic Games teams and is a former vice president of the New Zealand Olympic Committee. He believes, from his 50 years’ experience, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) must urgently make some realistic decisions to reduce the size of the event. He wants the CGF to return to the formula of hosting a Games with only 10 to 12 individual sports, which allows smaller and emerging Commonwealth countries to bid for them. He believes his own city of Christchurch, in a revised format, should be a serious contender for the 2026 Games. “As a part of its $70 billion rebuild following the earthquakes, Christchurch is developing world class facilities, which include an all-weath-

er track and a multi-purpose event centre,” he says. “With imagination, the all-weather track could be suitable as a main stadium, with our two universities again forming the basis of our athletes’ village. “I would support holding rowing and canoeing at Lake Hood.” Bruce Ullrich recalls that, when Malaysia hosted the 1998 Games, they included team sports such as hockey and cricket that more than doubled the number of competitors from 1500 to 2000 to around the 5000 mark. “That decision hugely increased the infrastructure costs, limiting the number of applicants coming forward to host the Games. “Bigger is not necessarily better. Durban withdrew its hosting rights for the 2022 Games because of cost,” he says. “The CGF

must make some realistic decisions so the Games can be successfully hosted by smaller countries. “There’s been no traction from them so far, but allocation of funding must be seriously reconsidered, in the light of Covid-19.” He points out that New Zealand has not made a formal bid since the 1990 Auckland Games because the price tag of up to $500 million would have to be met by the hosting government, and unlike the Olympics, where television revenue is a major source of income, the TV contract for Commonwealth Games is minimal. Yet he says the Games play a very important part in bringing the Commonwealth together and giving international competition to developing athletes. “There’s no doubt the Games have provided our competitors the opportunity for experience which has led to outstanding

results at the Olympics,” Bruce comments. In reducing the Games to 10 or 12 individual sports, he recommends that other Commonwealth countries could bid for the team sports. These would be an official part of the Games, held elsewhere in the same year under the auspices of the CGF. If the Games progress under a reduced formula, Bruce Ullrich believes it’s Christchurch’s turn. “It would be our chance to demonstrate to the world that we’re back in business,” he comments. He’s also keen for Christchurch to hold a track and field or mini-Games in 2024, the 50th anniversary of the successful 1974 Commonwealth Games. Christchurch has also hosted a Centennial Games in 1950 and two New Zealand Games in the years following 1974. It will demonstrate what the city is capable of, he says.

“It would be our chance to demonstrate to the world that we’re back in business,” - Bruce Ullrich

Olympic and Commonwealth Games legend Bruce Ullrich believes Lake Hood would be ideal for rowing and canoeing if Canterbury were to make a bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Allenton falters with the bat again By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Allenton will be rueing another missed opportunity in the Canterbury Country cricket competition, after they left all-important points out in the middle again on Saturday when losing to Darfield. As they have on a number of occasions this season, the Allenton lads have put themselves into a good position to go on and win their matches, only for their discipline with the bat to let them down. And it was no different on Saturday. Playing on the Darfield Domain, the hosts won the toss and decided to take the willow out into the

middle and see what they could produce. The short answer was, not much. They managed to last 36 overs, but runs were tough to come by as they limped through to 104 before they were all out. A 33 at the tail of the innings boosted the tally considerably. For Allenton, both Mana Singh and Ranvy Pannu made decent contributions with the ball. Singh took 3-19 off his eight overs in an excellent spell which saw him take two of his wickets at the top of the innings. It was Pannu who did the damage in the middle, however taking three reasonably quick wickets, to rip through the Darfield middle order and give his side a chance. Sanjay Singh clipped out the tail

with two wickets of his own too. In reply, Allenton should have felt confident. Some big run scorers sat waiting in their batting line-up, as well as some experienced heads too, but again their failures to put the head down and bat out an innings became their undoing. At 64-5 after 16 overs, the match was still very much there, but a continued flow of wickets saw them eventually all out in the 23rd over for just 87 runs, and another disappointing defeat sat on their team record for the season. The team will need to pick themselves up before they head over the river again this weekend, where they will take on Swannanoa in what is fast-becoming a must win match for the team.

Mana Singh was very tidy with ball in hand for Allenton.

PANTHERS GO BIG By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

The Panthers have leapt into contention in local softball following a high scoring affair at the weekend. The club team mauled the Fairfield Ratbags 21-10 in Mid Canterbury’s senior mixed league at Argyle Park, which moved the team into second spot on the ladder. However there is some still some ground to make up as the defending champions Hampstead Heat continue to occupy the top spot following a 12-6 win. The Heat now hold an eight point lead over the trailing Panthers, as the remaining four teams appear set for a softballing squabble to remain in touch. Nothing illustrated the vying element of the league than the thriller between the Hampstead Phoenix and the Demon Rebels on Saturday, with the Nix edging it by a solitary run 9-8. The overall picture may look different yet again at the end of this weekend, with the middle teams pitted against each other. While the Heat will go in as heavy favourites against the Rebels, the Panthers face off with the Ragamuffins, while the Ratbags go up against the Phoenix. In Hampstead’s Slow Pitch competition on Friday, the Marines & Angels prevailed over Laser Attack 22-11 and the Hakatere Hitters beat The Reigning Champs 21-16. The Hitters later defaulted to the S & Giggles.

Combined go down fighting By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton Combined cricketers put up a stern second innings chase at the weekend despite only fielding nine players. The team went down to Christchurch Boys’ High School’s 5th XI by 27 runs in Christchurch in what was a gallant display by the visitors after Boys’ were well on top at the innings break. Combined skipper Adam Shears led from the front with both bat and ball, and was responsible for hauling his side into contention. He was the pick of the out-of-town bowlers with 2-38 from his eight overs, after the hosts notched up an imposing total of 300/4 from its 40 overs. Opener Harry Parkes carried his bat with an unbeaten 118 to put the Christchurch school into a commanding position. Boys’ advantage was eaten into significantly after play resumed as Shears and Nick Stringer proceeded to put on a towering opening partnership of 168 in 25.2 overs, which brought Ashburton right back into the frame. Stringer went for 74 off 76 but Shears continued with a stand of 66 for the second wicket. A couple of quick wickets thwarted Combined inside the final 10 overs, and once Shears went for 96 as the last remaining batsman Boys’ High had the edge. The visitors finished up seven down and 27 runs in arrears, however the team should be content after gutsing it out for 80 overs.

Ashburton Combined’s Adam Shears was unlucky not to notch a century in Christchurch on Saturday.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): There’s so much going right. When you focus on that, it builds. It’s easier to do around people who want you to succeed. Notice who supports you and wants to hear about what’s good in your world. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): An investment in your health, education and curiosity in the world will pay off now, later and all along the way. You really can’t go wrong with this, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Noting your accomplishments will be important. Even better, celebrate them! It’s about keeping track of the data, but the emotional element is key, too, because it provides the fuel to aim for future success. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): To you, compassion is not an emotion but a call to action. You do what you can to alleviate suffering. Sometimes, all you can do is offer some warmth, and you do that so well. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Discourse can feel like a game of strategy, and it often it is. You’ll be well aware of how what you say is a move, and your move not only changes your position, but also it changes theirs and the future. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): When positive experiences aren’t naturally happening, you will be able to create them with minimal effort. Try to make at least four to offset the neutral and negative experiences of daily life. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): When you’re with people of different moods, sometimes you lead with yours, and sometimes you follow theirs. So, whose mood prevails today? The answer will be interesting and compelling. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It can be frustrating to find your ability has not caught up with your ambition, but don’t worry. Just because you are unable to satisfy a desire today doesn’t mean you won’t get there tomorrow. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Love makes its own channels, and they can be unpredictable indeed. You’ll give your love to one person and it will be returned to you through another in an unrelated interaction. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Sometimes, people have a natural appetite for what’s good for them, but more often they don’t. Perhaps they don’t know enough about it yet. You’ll work on an appetising presentation. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): It seems the person who gets your focus isn’t the one you most enjoy, but the one who needs you the most. This is not ideal for your short-term happiness but works wonders for building strong character. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): It turns out the barrier was up in your head – a block created with emotion and past experience that can be disassembled without too much hassle.
