Farmers waiting on the heat Many Mid Canterbury arable farmers have windrowed crops and are waiting on hot, dry weather to get these harvested. PHOTO SUPPLIED

By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury arable farmers are hoping that hotter days forecast later this week will allow them to start making inroads into harvesting crops. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury arable chairman Darrell Hydes said cooler, overcast weather had meant a frustrating start to the harvest. Many farmers, including himself, had cut crops and were waiting on hot, dry weather to get

these harvested. “We’ve got one paddock of rape seed that we windrowed on December 23 that we are still waiting to harvest. “It needs 10 to 14 days to dry as the moisture needs to come down to 10 per cent. “On several days it has come down to 11 per cent, but has not quite got there, and then it gets damp again. “We’ve also got some cocksfoot that was windrowed on New Year’s day and a paddock of ryegrass.” Hydes said that he had heard

that some cut ryegrass crops on coastal farms may be regrowing. “Rape and cocksfoot are safe in the windrow, but if ryegrass lies too long it regrows through the mown rows and then you have a hang of a job to harvest it.” Hydes said he knew of a dryland farmer who had harvested autumn-sown barley but had to artificially dry the crop once it was off the paddock to get the moisture down to the correct level. Already this month 45mm of rain had fallen “with not a lot of hot weather in between”.

“It is great for finishing off later crops, but not the ones that are ready now.” While there had been some heavy rain and thunderstorms, especially along the foothills, Hydes said he hadn’t heard of any hail damage in Mid Canterbury. On January 2, Geraldine was hit by a severe hailstorm, with stones up to 30mm in size, damaging properties. Hydes said that most of the crops on his Methven farm were dryland and these were looking promising. While dryland crops were start-

ing to get stressed by hot weather in early December, rain since had helped. “Most dryland crops are further inland and they got a bit more rain.” Earlier dry conditions were more of an issue on arable farms in South Canterbury. “As long as we get a decent spell of hot weather now, we will be all right. “It is just frustrating trying to get anything done at the moment. “All the cropping farmers will want a bit of heat now.”

Weekend wanderlust boosts bookings Rakaia River Holiday Park owners Sandy and Glen Newell are having bigger numbers of domestic travellers fill the void of international tourists. By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Holiday Parks in the district are reporting similar levels of patronage, but it’s all domestic travellers. With no international tourism due to Covid-19 restrictions at the border, Kiwis have been exploring their own backyards, filling the void of international tourists. For obvious reasons, the holiday parks have seen an increase in domestic tourists which has offset the lack of international visitors. While the numbers have been the same, the weekdays have been quieter before busier weekends make up for it. “We have been as busy as usual, but we haven’t been getting any international tourists, so the locals travelling have been keeping the numbers up,” Rakaia River Holiday Park owner Sandy Newell said.

“We haven’t been getting any more people, it’s just been a much high percentage of New Zealanders.” Newell said they usually had a big number of international tourists stopping in during the week after picking up their campervans in Christchurch and spending their first night in Rakaia before heading off. Instead, they are getting Kiwis looking to head away for a few days, either stopping in on their way elsewhere or setting up for a few days. “We are seeing a lot of people who have brought camping gear, caravans or campers and are trying them out for the first time.” The motels and cabins have been busier than usual, Newell said and the weekdays had been quieter with things picking up at the weekend. Mount Somers Holiday Park

WHITEWARE

managing director Peter Peilua said they have had similar numbers, but “just a different clientele”. Peilua said traditionally Mt Somers would have been around 70 to 80 per cent international visitors, but this summer it has been all Kiwis. “We have been fully booked since a week before Christmas, so it’s been pretty good. “I haven’t seen this many tents through the holiday park. “People that would have taken a trip overseas are having to be more creative and are wanting to explore, but staying off State Highway 1.” He also said they had been busy in early December and that a lot of regular campervan owners were holidaying outside of the usual holiday period. With no internationals, Peilua said they had concerns of a major

slowdown heading into February, but the domestic travellers were starting to book ahead – predominantly at the weekends. “Forward bookings are starting to look promising,” Peilua said. Coronation Park owner Jamie Dalzell said they had been reasonably busy. “It had been about the same, possibly a touch more,” Dalzell said. “We have had a lot of caravan and not so many tent sites. “Ashburton is not a destination, so they are all heading through to somewhere else.” Across town in Tinwald, Ashburton Holiday Park manager Nadine Pink said they had been busy in different parts. “There is definitely more New Zealanders out, but we are missing the international tourists. “We have had a few family groups tenting, but definitely have

more on powered sites and more in our accommodation. “We usually had more backpacker and non-powered sites, but this summer have had way more powered sites and cabins.” There was a split between longer term campers, including many regulars, and the overnighters, Pink said. “It has tended to be that we are busy at the weekend and quiet during the week as the New Zealanders still have to go to work, so there is not so much holidaying people but weekend people.” There had also been a steady flow of bookings coming in with Pink expecting things to go quiet after the next school holidays heading into winter. The Methven Caravan Park was the odd one out with a spokeswoman saying they were “dead quiet” in what has been a slow summer.

Special awards for two from Rotarians By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Ted Wood and Eleanor Weir have been surprised with special awards by the Rotary Club of Ashburton. At the final official meeting of the year at the Hotel Ashburton in December, Wood was awarded a Sapphire Pin to mark 50 years as a member of the club and Weir was presented with a Community Service award. Wood’s milestone is one seldom reached, but his time in the club has been marked by an enormous amount of service to his family, his community and to our club. “I had no idea it was going to happen,” Wood said. “They kept it a great secret. “You don’t really appreciate the significance of it in the moment because it’s an emotional moment and your brain’s not ticking properly. “For me, 50 years was just another year, but when you are presented with the pin it makes you think back and realise how very lucky you were to be recognised by your fellow members. It was fellow dentist and Rotarian Keith Anderson who invited Wood to join Rotary and he accepted the invitation, and the rest is history. “I was lucky – I joined reasonably young and was in a routine job which meant I could always get to the meetings.” Wood ran a dental practice and is also a qualified accountant, and was a member of the Ashburton Borough Council for some years during which he spent a period as the deputy mayor. He was Rotary club president in 1976-77 and has held many other roles in the club during his tenure. Since his retirement he has been heavily involved with the annual Bookarama. “The big thing about Rotary is getting involved in the various activities they do in the community and that lets you meet other

The big thing about Rotary is getting involved in the various activities they do in the community and that lets you meet other people and develop various skills – Ted Wood people and develop various skills. “Bookarama is fantastic. We meet about 6000 people during the week. “I don’t have trouble finding things to do. “Rotary gets me to a meeting once a week and I meet up with the 50-odd different people which

is one of the virtues of the Rotary movement – you get to meet different people, get different points of view and come out of it with a balanced point of view.” The second award went to Weir who has been a member of the Ashburton branch of the Blind and Low Vision New Zealand –

formerly the Foundation for the Blind – for 25 years Her husband, Eric, is a Rotary member but they had no idea she was going to be presented with the award. “It was very humbling,” she said. A volunteer on the committee for 25 years, Weir has been secre-

tary for 20 years. “I was asked to read a newspaper for a very special man – George Rountree. “He was an interesting man and I learnt a lot about things I never looked at before – especially cattle as he was an ex-farmer.” Through that role she was approached to join the committee. “The committee was “like a big family” she said, a tight-knit group of volunteers who are there to support and assist the members. There are around 80 members locally she said and at least a third of those attend the monthly meetings.

Scamming numbers on the rise

Scamming attempts are occurring hundreds of times throughout Mid Canterbury during the week Local BNZ bank manager, Karen Burrowes.

PHOTO SUPPLIED

Mid Canterbury people are being scammed of their money. A senior bank manager in Ashburton has received more calls this year from upset people who say they’ve either been scammed or have prevented a fraudulent call. Karen Burrowes, manager of BNZ Ashburton and Methven, has 20 years’ experience in banking and says scamming has never been more serious than “right at the moment”. Already 10 customers have contacted her bank this year saying they’ve been scammed or have thwarted a fraudulent attempt. “Scamming is on the increase. It’s concerning to us and other banks,” Karen says. “Scamming is devastating to people who’ve inadvertently lost hardearned savings. “Scamming attempts are occurring hundreds of times throughout Mid Canterbury during the week.” While Karen can’t put an exact figure on the losses, she estimates it’s in the thousands of dollars. She recommends people should be particularly vigilant over the holiday period when they’re relaxing at home or receiving unexpected calls while they’re taking a break. Scamming has been increasing since Covid-19. With people based at home, scammers know they’re more likely to answer phones or spend additional time on their computers. “Scamming has become a full-time job to cheat customers of their savings. If they succeed once or twice a week, they’re making a lot of money,” Karen said. The scammers mostly ring people at home representing Spark, IRD or CourierPost with parcels that need to

be picked up on receipt of money. The fraudulent calls from Spark relate to fictitious computer problems where bank account details are requested or the caller asks for authority to take over a computer to solve the problem. “They sound very authentic so be very aware,” Karen says. She has some sound advice. If callers sound suspicious or too good to be true hang up. If the calls are bank related then decline but, if the customer unwittingly passes on details, they should immediately ring their bank and block their credit card and account details. “Some people are embarrassed and their pride doesn’t allow them to act quickly, but they shouldn’t delay,” Karen advised. She also recommended people maintain up-to-date security on their phones and computers. It safeguards them from intrusion. While scamming is the most prevalent, there are online predators who seek relationships. They often appeal to people who are vulnerable or lonely and inevitably request money to keep the relationship thriving. In addition “professional companies or individuals” contact email users, informing them that unknown benefactors have left millions of dollars in their wills and, if they provide their credit card details, the money will be forwarded. BNZ actively talks to community groups about being scam savvy. They dedicate a week to helping the community be better prepared to deal with fraudsters. Karen Burrowes has yet to allocate time this year, but she says all staff are trained and are attending calls and client visits on a daily basis.

Before Hoops and Peter Mac, there was Jack Maybury By Malcolm Hopwood In his day he was as popular as Bradley Walsh. He featured on commercial radio stations throughout New Zealand in the 1950s, yet 70 years later there’s little information about one of our favourite quiz show hosts. Ashburton’s Jack Maybury was as famous as Selwyn Toogood and people, listening in to radio during the 1950s decade, started their evenings with Scoop The Pool and Number Please. Sadly, at the height of his career Jack died. He was only 53. Unlike Selwyn’s career that flourished on TV and was immortalised in his autobiography, Jack was constantly on the road presenting his quiz shows from every town and city in the country. He was one of Ashburton’s famous sons and, if Guardian readers have their own recollections of him, we’d like to know. Jack could always talk and it was no surprise that he joined New Zealand Radio in the 1930s. It’s rumoured that on April 1 he broadcast a Martian landing in Hagley Park, which displeased his bosses so much that he left for Australia. But that’s hearsay based on rumour, coloured by speculation. Years later he was forgiven and

ble years of Scoop The Pool and Number Please which featured week nights on radio. New Zealand didn’t have TV until 1960, so wireless reigned supreme. Families had their evening meal, cleared the dishes and listened to

Jack. He had a warm, entertaining style which put contestants at their ease and made him a firm favourite. When he died unexpectedly his son, John Maybury, carried on the shows, but somehow he

wasn’t Jack. Dorothy Jean moved to Wellington and opened a women’s fashion shop. Jack appeared to be born bald and there isn’t a photo of him with any growth on top. Any image shows him with a smile and a shiny pate. However, he had another string to his bow or instrument to his lips. Jack was a musician and, at one stage, was a member of a concert band. A photo I treasured but is now lost is of Jack as a member of the Ashburton Silver Band, conducted by my uncle, Eric Hopwood. My memory is of Jack playing cornet. He knew how to blow his own trumpet. Later, in 1935, he appears as a member of the Radio Rhythmic Symphonists, an 18-piece big band, all dressed as penguins with bowties. About then he put down his baritone sax and used his energy, talent and breath to become an early radio pioneer and host. I think he was reincarnated as Bradley Walsh. If Jack was alive today, aged about 114, he’d be telling Peter Mac and Hoops all about his life. It would be great if Jack appeared in Ashburton’s Hall of Fame, but firstly we have to find out more about him and then create a hall of fame.

The Filipino Dairy Workers’ food stall was a popular choice at last year’s Multi Cultural Bite.

Celebrations confirmed Waitangi Day 2021, will be marked in Ashburton by two great family-oriented events, the twelfth annual Multi Cultural Bite followed by Waitangi Day at the Pa. On Saturday February 6, Multi Cultural Bite will take place from 10am to 2pm at their exciting new venue in the Ashburton Domain, at the corner of Walnut Avenue and West Street, adjacent to the paddling pool, children’s playground and toilets. On the same day, Waitangi Day at the Pa will follow from 3pm at Hakatere Marae, signposted on State Highway 1 at Fairton, just a five minute drive from the domain. The entire community and their visitors are most welcome at both events. Multi Cultural Bite is an award-winning multi-cultural festival that provides an opportunity for different ethnic groups within the community to showcase their culture. Performing arts, interactive children’s activities and ethnic food stalls, selling bite-sized portions of their typical national dishes, operate throughout the day. It is free to attend and offers a prime opportunity for the people of the Ashburton District, as well as visitors, to celebrate the

diversity of our community. The event is held on Waitangi Day each year, and up to 14,000 people have passed through Multi Cultural Bite in previous years. This year, Multi Cultural Bite will be celebrating its twelfth anniversary. The food stalls will be arranged in regional groups, with a centralised stage, encouraging the notion of a virtual tour of the world through food. Given the beautiful grassed venue, with loads of space, visitors are invitied to bring their picnic blankets and camp chairs to enjoy their bites and performances in comfort. Waitangi Day celebrations will continue from mid-afternoon with kai, waiata, games, bouncy castles and other family-oriented activities at Hakatere Marae, just up SH1 at Fairton. This will be an opportunity for all New Zealanders to recognise the bicultural founding of our nation, and come together to commemorate our national day in an informal, welcoming environment. Admission to this event is also free.

OUR VIEW

Threat of scammers an all-too real and constant danger By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

I

t’s a sad indictment on some corners of society, but the danger of scammers is real once again. To be honest, it’s never really disappeared. You’ll hear the odd scattered comment from time to time as someone reveals they’ve been targeted, but there are frequent occasions where the offending seems to reach a maximum peak of activity. And while it pays to be vigilant when such occasions occur, it’s an even better idea to remain constantly alert and to remind yourself of the sure-fire signs that someone is not who they are making themselves out to be. And it’s equally as important to remind those around you. Be they loved ones, neighbours or friends. Make it a constant conversation worth happening, just to keep the memory bank fresh for everyone. In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have to worry about such behaviour. But sadly, there are people out there who like to prey on the vulnerable and try and take advantage of the situation. And they’ll take whatever means necessary to try and achieve their goal. The best step is to not even engage. Hang up the phone, delete the email or close the front door if you’re not sure. It’s much better to be safe, than it is to be sorry. The warnings in today’s paper from Karen Burrowes of BNZ here locally in Mid Canterbury are particularly worth heeding. Here is someone who is seeing and experience the pain, frustration and anger from people in our own community who have been duped by targeted fraudulent behaviour. There is a heap of advice and warning signs out there these days around scamming and it’s many various forms of existence. Our best advice is to get your hands on some and keep it nearby and reinform yourself often. By taking the extra steps of precaution you give yourself the best possible chance of not becoming another statistic in an ever-growing list of sad stories where people have been cheated of their hard earned.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): It’s easier to create a scenario than to change it. The best interactions will be partly spontaneous and partly designed. You can’t control other people, but you can position yourself to maximise your influence. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Making connections is easier with a mutually agreeable proposition, but right now that’s not on the table. You can say yes to a person even though you have to say no to the offer the person is making. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You provide a mirror for others. They feel seen and heard. Your manner of relating is a gift, an emotional balm. Such exchanges are more valuable than most realise. Indeed, they can alleviate suffering. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Relationships, like time, are always moving forward. So don’t be surprised if the thing that worked three months or three years ago will work differently now, or won’t work at all. This is an invitation to get creative. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’re ditching the guided tour and striking out on your own. After all, who can tell you what you’re interested in? Not even you, but you’ll know it when you see it. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): What you give is valuable, and yet, as it can go in the extremely high-end places, the price tag reflecting that value isn’t attached. One has to know to know. If they don’t know, they don’t belong in the shop. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Leave yourself room for flexibility. Knowing what you are willing and not willing to do is tricky because it constantly changes depending on who is asking, the convenience of the ask and other variables in the moment. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Some problems need to be approached as you would a garden. You pay attention for a short while – seed, weed, trim – and then you leave it to do what it will until your next visit. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your upbringing is a strength. There may be things about it that you don’t feel the need to share, and yet, you can be sure that you are a stronger person because of all you’ve experienced. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): When the job is over, the problem is solved; the drain is plugged... it seems it should be a moment of relief, and yet, there’s a pang instead, representative of an affectionate involvement with trouble. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): When connecting with people you know well, you can predict where the interaction will go. And this is why it’s important to add a variable to the scenario – new location, odd timing – just to keep it fresh. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Among your goals is one that’s as ambitious as it is undefined. Perhaps the reason you haven’t stated exactly the result you are looking for is that it’s intangible; it’s a feeling or a state of mind.

Calls grow to ban the plough By Malcolm Hopwood and Heather Chalmers A soil scientist and agricultural engineer wants to see ploughing and soil cultivation in Mid Canterbury banned within five years. Dr John Baker, inventor of the Cross Slot no-tillage seed drill, said that if the government was serious about addressing climate change, then it must stop farmers throughout New Zealand disturbing the soil. Cultivation contributes significantly to the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. Baker said that about 85 per cent of the world’s food came from arable crops and up to 20 per cent of the CO2 in the atmosphere comes from arable farmers ploughing their soils to feed people. Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) environment manager Abie Horrocks said FAR supports the principle of reducing tillage as a method of improving soil quality and also reducing emissions from fossil fuel use. However, she noted that there were times when cultivation was required to support healthy, productive arable systems, and that a blanket ban could produce some undesirable outcomes.

As important as reducing emission is, no-one seems interested in recapturing CO2 that’s already been emitted and putting it back in the soil. Grower surveys, carried out by FAR, showed a gradual reduction in the average number of tillage passes conducted for crop establishment over the last 10 to 15 years. The biggest drop was the average number of passes after a break crop which had reduced from about three in 2007 to two in 2016. There had also been a small increase in the proportion of direct drilling and one pass cultivation coupled with a reduction in the use of the plough under some

conditions, Horrocks said. Another tillage survey will be carried out this year. Baker, who’s based in the Manawatu, called on the government to act decisively and discourage the use of ploughs and other soil disturbing tools. While such an idea may seem radical, there were better ways of sowing seed that don’t destroy soil and contribute to global warming. “For example, replacing cultivation with Low Disturbance No-Tillage (LDNT), invented in New Zealand, is a major improvement,” he said. LDNT leaves the carbon-rich residues of annually-harvested crops (such as leaves and straw) on the surface of the ground where earthworms and other soil fauna take it into the soil. It then sows new seeds through this mulch with minimal disturbance of the soil or residues. What it’s doing is applying keyhole surgery to farming, instead of invasive surgery. “LDNT can return about 500kg/ hectare/year of carbon to the soil whereas conventional cultivation releases about 2000kg/ha/yr. Yet the government has shown no interest,” Baker said.

He cannot understand why politicians are only focused on reducing emissions. “As important as reducing emission is, no-one seems interested in recapturing CO2 that’s already been emitted and putting it back in the soil.” “Doing so would contribute to both food production and climate change at the same time. It’s time the government went from prevention to cure.” Baker said a given area of crops and pastures will remove about as much carbon from the atmosphere each year as the same area of trees. Annual arable crops, sown by LDNT, can recycle carbon back into the soil every year whereas trees retain most of their carbon as wood. With trees, the atmosphere may benefit, but not the soil. With arable crops sown by LDNT, both benefit equally. Baker has accumulated the proof after 40 years of research at Massey University. For example, after three years of continuous arable cropping by LDNT, five soils, surveyed in New Zealand this decade, had accumulated 30 per cent more organic matter in their surface layers, than five ploughed soils nearby.

A year at ECan ECan councillor Ian Mackenzie

I

’d like to report that after just over 12 months as your ECan councillor I have sorted everything and the world, or at least this district, is a better place. I can’t and I haven’t and it isn’t. The challenges we face are diverse and complicated, and politicians and their politics tend to add to those complications. The biggest threat our community faces is the raw implications of the government’s Essential Freshwater reforms (EFW). The requirements of these reforms in terms of meeting a very low nitrate status in all our freshwater bodies means that farming of any kind on much of the plains will have to stop. Some extensive ranching could be permitted. The consequential loss of hundreds of millions of dollars a year from our district’s economy will have a devastating effect on our whole community.

The biggest threat our community faces is the raw implications of the Essential Freshwater reforms Richard Fitzgerald’s report to the Ashburton District Council gave us a warning as to the magnitude of that impact, especially on those that rely on servicing rural businesses. Not surprisingly leaders in our community including our national, regional and district politicians, are working on developing a case for some compromise to the EFW in the hope that we can persuade those in charge to agree to that compromise. Compromise is important. We need to compromise between allowing some of the effects of human occupation on our environment and trying to maintain a healthy environment. Without some compromise then all past and future development, both rural and urban, may be at risk. Think of the risk to life, property and

businesses if for the sake of the environment we pulled down the flood banks to let the Ashburton river flow wherever it likes, whenever it likes. This need for compromise was evident at a meeting up at Lake Clearwater the other day to discuss what could be done to address the problems with the lake. The lake has flipped to a poor state after years of decline in health. Most of us would have hoped and thought that retiring over 90 per cent of the lake’s catchment to conservation park from farming 13 years ago would have at least halted the decline, and protected the lake, but it hasn’t. It would appear that there may be multiple causes for the decline; from farming in the catchment to sewage from the village, warmer winters, the effects of the floods up there 15 months ago, and legacy issues from back in time. It may even be that shutting up most of the catchment in a conservation park has contributed in various ways to the problem. The meeting, that consisted mainly of a cross-section of the Ashburton community, was for the most part constructive and reasoned. They want to identify what is causing the problems up there by working with the Ian Mackenzie district and regional councils, they also want to ensure that they are minimising their own effects, and they want to find solutions. They want to see the lake return to a healthy status, but they also want to retain their ability to live in and interact with all that the Ashburton basin has to offer. The wider Ashburton community is no different. We all want both a prosperous economy and a healthy environment. If we push economic and recreational goals too hard then the environment may suffer. If we push environmental goals too hard then we risk destroying our community. We need to compromise! So as your regional councillor I’ll be trying to get those compromises in some A couple of the Ray White family are Denise and Bruce McPherson. sort of appropriate balance so that our They both love real estate - “Your property, our passion” is their mantra. community can prosper across all the Call Denise and Bruce today, they can be your next property specialists. well-beings. SHOOTOUT CONTENDERS Near perfect conditions on the Ashburton Golf Course on Saturday set the tone for good scores on the final day of qualifying for the Property Brokers Shootout. The annual tournament, which pits 19 players from the club against each other in an intense battle to the 18th hole, will be held on Sunday, January 24 at the Brandon Links, with Saturday’s 18-hole stableford tournament determining the make-up of the final field. Outstanding rounds from both David Morrison and Dylan Stoddart, who finished the day with a tidy 41 points next to their name, jumped their way onto the start list, joining 17 others who will chase the major prize from one of the club’s most coveted events. Morrison won Saturday’s play on a countback, with he and Stoddart joined by Bruce Ferriman, who also picked up 41 points. There was a

five-way tie for the next spot with 39 points with Bevan Wilson, Paul May, Richard McKernan, Rodney O’Neill and Kevin McStay also enjoying good rounds. Morrison, Stoddart, Wilson, McKernan and May will be joined in the shootout by fellow qualifiers Bev Chinn, Blair Snowball, Grant Smith, Craig Bain, Terry Molloy, Barry Jury, Pete Morrison, Ray Lambert, John Power, Jeff Hewitt, George Brown, Bruce Day, Cheryl Yates and Tuffy Sa. The tournament sees the entire field teeing off from the first hole on the course, with one player dropping out on each hole until the final two players are left remaining on the 18th hole tee block. Chip-offs are held to eliminate players when equal scores are recorded on holes. With a number of single-handicap golfers featuring in this year’s line-up the shootout is shaping up to be one of the best yet.

Indians expose Aussie vulnerabilities By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

re you watching, Black Caps? This Australian side is far from the finished

article. A weakened Indian outfit exposing these frailties in consecutive tests confirms this notion. Without Virat Kholi for three of the four tests, the third-ranked test side looked destined for a 4-0 drubbing after the first test in Adelaide, where it was taken apart in its second innings. Instead, India’s prickly bowling line-up turned the tables on Australia’s batsmen in the Boxing Day Test, where their order appeared more and more flimsy at the top and in the middle. SPORTS RESULTS

Onward to Sydney. After wallowing in the critique of the local press, Steve Smith fired up and turned things around – as he was always going to – with the bat alongside playmate Marnus Labuschagne. Smith is so pivotal to Australia’s batting and match prospects that its batting almost looks built upon stilts if he fails, however rare an occurrence it is. He delivered at the SCG, however Australia still did not win the test on Monday. Despite his form-replenishing efforts, not to mention his “creative” footwork on the pitch on the fifth day, Smith appeared a stunned mullet when he received man-of-the-match honours. in their arsenal, it was revealing to see an Australian outfit rattled and highly strung, as they were continuously denied by a handful of Indian heroes on the final day. Rishabh Pant, Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari and Ravi Ashwin all exhibited varying approaches, but yet were uniformly engaged in the fight as a lay down misere dissolved into a tense scrap. With catches going down and wickets elusive, the so-called new breed of Australian cricket reverted to type with its chat. Wicket-keeper and captain Tim Paine, who previously emerged as a smarter and wittier exponent of on-field banter, did not take too kindly to Ravi Ashwin’s retort when batting, and volleyed up some bottom-of-the-barrel

barbs, only to drop a third catch with the gloves moments later off Mitchell Starc to complete a miserable day at the office for the 36-year-old. Call it poetic justice. In all fairness, the Australian skipper should’ve picked a better target than one of the world’s best spinners, who has four centuries to his name, four more than Paine, who averages little more than 32 in test cricket with the bat. During the same exchange, Matt Wade can be heard from an in close fielding position channeling 2013-era Michael Clarke with the mention of a “broken rib”. Australia’s fifth-day foray unravelled in front of our eyes and ears with little sympathy garnered in the wash up. India’s stonewalling was

exactly the type of resistance and grit we were after from the Black Caps – who have built their current reputation on those principles – across the ditch last summer. If anything this series has spurred the desire in New Zealand to face off with Australia in a test match context as soon as possible. The irony is, India’s rebuff in this series reduces the likelihood of a possible Test Championship Final showdown at Lord’s between Australia and New Zealand. Often accused of having a mental block when it comes to facing Australia, the Black Caps should take heed of the template and mindset India have adopted which has seen it punch well above its weight during the series.

BOWLS

Singles titles race heats up The race for two of Mid Canterbury bowls most elite titles went full-bore on the weekend, setting the perfect platform for a big day of knockout play this weekend. Qualifying days for both the Lowry Cup for the men and the Nan Marsh for the women were held across three greens on Saturday, with the men in action at Ashburton and Hampstead while the ladies did battle on the Allenton green. Two of the sport’s biggest prizes locally, good numbers took part in both events, with 30 entries in the men’s and 12 in the women’s competitions. Five of the 12 players who took to Allenton managed to work their way through to the next stage of the competition in the Nan Marsh Singles. Wendy Suttie and Jo Collis went three-from-three and didn’t have to play their last game, while Barbara Skilling, Wendy Herriott and Alison Gibbs all picked up three wins.

Skilling and Herriott will square off in the first game this weekend with Gibbs, Suttie and Collis gaining a bye and automatic entry into the semi-finals. Post section play is again at the Allenton Bowling Club. In the men’s competition, a strong line-up of players competed and by and large most of the day went to script, but it wasn’t without a few upsets on the greens either. Two recent Lowry Cup winners, Brent Mayson and Jeff Nowell failed to pick up the required three wins to earn a spot at this weekend’s knockout stage. Nowell won his first two games at Ashburton but faltered on the last two, while Mayson lost his second and third games to miss the cut. Eleven players worked their way through to this weekend’s play courtesy of picking up three or more wins from the four matches on offer on Saturday. At Hampstead, Aaron Allred,

Kat Vallance in action in the Nan Marsh Women’s Singles last weekend.

Richard Kane, Bruce Harper, Rob Fensom and John Kewish all took the easy route by winning their first three games, and weren’t re-

quired to play the final match of the day. All matches were a race to 21 shots, and a number of tight games eventuated. Mayson was involved in two close losses, losing to Kane 1921 and then Fensom by the same score in the next game, while Kewish had to fight hard for his third win, with Manu Otene pushing him close with a final score of 20-21. Only one match was required to be played in the final round of the day, with Murray Smallridge needing to beat Linton Muir to earn a qualifying spot. Muir was too strong however, winning 21-11, giving both two wins for the day. At Ashburton, things weren’t quite as clear-cut, with everyone suffering a loss during the day. Alex Crawford finished top qualifier, but had to do it the hard way by beating Simon Fleetwood

in what was the final game of the day. Crawford lost a thriller to John Drayton in the third round. Drayton bounced back from an early loss to Brentton Donaldson to win his last two matches, while Donaldson was beaten by Fleetwood in the third game, leaving him needing his last two to qualify. Matt Bassett, who like Donaldson, is a former winner, overcame a narrow loss to Nowell in the second game to earn his spot, while Matt Markham brushed off losing his first game of the day to pick up his last three games to claim a spot as well. At Methven this weekend, Bassett and Fleetwood, Drayton and Fensom and Allred and Markham will play in the opening round while Crawford, Donaldson, Harper, Kane and Kewish all advance to final eight with the bye.

HARNESS RACING

Locals in strong form on Nelson circuit By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury locals put forth a strong showing at the weekend’s two-day Nelson Harness Racing Club meeting, with almost a third of the winners from the two days of racing having a direct connection to the region. Champion driver, Ricky May ruled the roost on Friday, the opening day of the meeting, picking up two winners – a tally he added to with a third winner for the trip on Sunday. He was successful on board

the Westport-trained runner Annerie on Friday, and then steered Valley Star to victory later in the day. He waited until the last on Sunday to pick up his third – combining with former Mid Cantabrian Rodney Dickson to win with Shezsomethinspecial. The treble took May to 23 wins for the season, and within 25 of the 3000 win milestone he’s on track to chase down this year. When he does, he will become just the third driver in New Zealand history to achieve it. Also in good form at the meeting was Ashburton Raceway trainer, Brent White (right) who

picked up a double on Sunday. White, a regular attendee at the Nelson meeting, won with maiden pacers Punt Away and Mabalene, who both broke maiden status after good placings to open their careers. He nearly had the perfect start with maiden trotter, Samantha’s Moon finishing second in between the two wins on Sunday. Gerard O’Reilly also picked up a training brace of wins for the weekend. He was successful with Striking Gladiator on Friday, who was given a sublime run in front by his daughter, Sarah to pick

up the third win of his career, and then backed that up with a strong third placing up in grade on Sunday. On Sunday, Gerard was in the cart himself when he piloted A Rocknroll Star to success. A three-year-old gelding having just his third start, A Rocknroll Star is raced by the Terranova Syndicate alongside Warren and Christine Hyndman. A number of local horses will be back at the top of the South Island this weekend for the Marlborough Harness Racing Club’s two-day meeting at Waterlea Racecourse in Blenheim.

CROQUET

Countback required By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A day of competitive and combative croquet, is how one may describe the weekend’s Don Reyland playoffs in Ashburton. Hometown exponent David Galvin emerged victorious at the Waireka club in the triangular tournament, but not before a countback was required to settle proceedings. The Waireka Club resident’s +8 net tally was the difference in the end, as he prevailed over Awamoa Gardens’ Eric Scott and Geraldine’s Jack Ellery. All three players won two games apiece across the six round event, which prompted further examination of the scoresheet. Scott finished in second spot after finishing with a -2 net points mark, with Ellery resigned to third (-6). Following his victory at the weekend, Galvin is set to play the Croquet New Zealand Stars Tournament in Nelson on March 27-28. Waireka hosts its club championships next weekend.

CLUB NEWS

Ashburton Bowling Club We are all up and running now into 2021, a new year, with a somewhat dubious one being left behind us! Our 2021 Friday Triples on the 8th, sponsored by Toyota, started with 2 full greens and not one cancellation from the original entries! A keen breeze blew, but the bowling was well up to standard. Results: 1st B. Harper B. Mayson M. Foggo – 3 wins, 15 ends, 37 points, 2nd M. Anderson J. Kewish G Crack – 3 wins, 15 ends, 28 points, 3rd Bishop L. Mills J. Mills – 3 wins, 14 ends, 37 points, 4th Bennett S. Holdom B. Holdom – 3 wins, 13 ends, 36 points, 5th C. Dennis J. Argyle C. Cleghorn – 2 wins, 1 draw, 13 ends, 28 points, 6th R Herriott D Murcot W Herriott – 2 wins, 1 draw, 12 ends, 22 points, 7th D Kinvig D Prendergast P Quinn – 2 wins, 17 ends, 32 points.

Our Saturday Rollover Triples suffered in numbers from men’s and women’s competition entries and volunteer markers. More can be expected to take part next week. First with 2 wins, 18 ends, 14 points were T Watson, C Cross, B Wilson and 2nd with 1 win, 8 ends, 13 points were A Blain, R Keeling, M Campbell. (Not recorded before, on 19th December numbers were certainly down due to the time of year, but 1st were T Watson and M Campbell, 2nd were B. Wilson and M. Knudsen. Also on Saturday the qualifiers for the Nan Marsh Ladies Singles Section Play took place at Allenton. A good quota of Ashburton ladies took part and played very well. Four, namely Wendy Suttie, Wendy Herriott, Alison Gibbs, Barbara Skilling have qualified for the 16th January. In the 1st round Barbara Skilling plays Wendy Herriott, whilst our other 2 players have byes into the 2nd round.

And also on Saturday the Lowry Cup Men’s Singles Section Play took place at Hampstead and Ashburton. Brentton Donaldson and John Kewish have qualified. A big thank you goes to all our men who volunteered as markers for this day. A good contingent of Ashburton men and ladies have entered the Sub-centre Over 60s competition at Allenton on Monday 11th. Good luck to all of them! Our Ashburton Ladies Handicapped Singles will be played on Tuesday 12th starting at 9.30 am. A contingent of Ashburton ladies will be travelling to Methven on Wednesday 13th for the Edna Low ladies fours. Good luck ladies! And the Friday Triples on the 15th, sponsored by Toyota, will again be played at Ashburton. Happy New Year everyone, good bowling, stay well, stay safe!

Ashburton Golf Club A big field took to the course on Saturday thanks to the fine weather. The course was in immaculate condition, not a breath of wind, so if you failed to play well then there was only one thing to blame. The less said about this writer’s round the better. Sorry Gav! Dave Morrison led the way with a very impressive 41 points, I dare say he would have had to shoot under par gross to get that. He pipped Dylan Stoddart and Bruce Ferriman on countback, so well played all of you. The great scores that Dave and Dylan got also catapulted them into the final of the Property Brokers shootout. Everyone was watching the scoreboard carefully in the clubrooms as all the scores were entered. Some players jumped up, many fell down, but after the dust settled we had the final 19 sorted out. This years final 19 for the Property Brokers Shootout are Bev Chinn, Dylan S, Bevan Wilson, Blair Snowball, Richard Mc, Grant Smith, Craig Bain, Terry Molloy, Barry Jury, Pete Morrison, Dave M, Ray Lambert, John Power, Jeff Hewitt, George

Brown, Bruce Day, Paul May, Cheryl Yates and Tuffy Sa. This really is a very strong field. By my reckoning we have half of them playing off single handicaps, one previous winner and a couple of beaten finalists. It is going to be a great game to watch and there will be lots of chip offs in store. A form guide has been written and is available in the club for all to read and should be on the website soon. Hamish will be holding an auction this Saturday after golf and the big race kicks off Sunday week the 24th at 10am. Pop along it is always a great spectacle. This Saturday we have Club Opening Day this is a mixed day playing Canadian Foursomes Pairs. Mixed pairs for the AC

Browne Cup and Mens Pairs for the Smith salver. The mixed days are always a lot of fun down at the Brandon, the clubrooms seem to have a different vibe when everyone is there. Normal start times. Quick note to beware of runaway electric trundlers, we seem to have quite a few of these at the course now and they do have a tendency to flick themselves on now and again. The latest sighting of this phenomena was on the second hole last Saturday when poor old Dave Robertson’s little legs were going ten to the dozen and he tried to run down his trundler heading up the third. At least we don’t have any water hazards to lose them into. Till next week; Good golfing.

Young guns fire up By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

The budding talents within Mid Canterbury’s cricketing ranks have staked their credentials after taking charge at the weekend. The senior reps clinched a hard fought three-wicket win over Canterbury Country in a 50-over Hawke Cup warm-up in Ashburton on Sunday. Left arm quick Harry McMillan and AshColl batting star Angus Jemmett were the key contributors for Mid Canterbury in a low scoring affair at the Ashburton Domain Oval – promising signs ahead of this weekend’s Hawke Cup challenge with South Canterbury. Eighteen-year-old McMillan’s five-for restricted Canterbury Country to 151 batting first. It was a total which looked more than enough, however, as Mid Canterbury’s top order crumbled to be 9/4 by the seventh over in response. An unruffled Jemmett, who opened the innings, shepherded the hosts out of difficulty, with an unbeaten 63, alongside some sup-

port in the middle order, to lead Mid Canterbury home with six overs in hand. In what proved to be challenging conditions for batting, Canterbury Country toiled away at the top after being sent in. They lost both openers in consecutive overs to be 38/2 with the run rate little more than 3 an over. The flow of runs continued to lag for the visitors as expat Archie Redfern and Liam Foulkes looked to consolidate over the next 15 or so overs. The pair put on 45 before Redfern, who had spent almost an hour at the crease for 15, was caught off the bowling of Ryan Bell. Foulkes continued to persevere at the other end, as he led Country past the 100 run mark. The reintroduction of McMillan however spelled problems for the visitors’ batsmen, as the STAC left-armer exploited the conditions to great effect. He removed Foulkes for 36 caught behind, before he halted a promising foray in the same fashion from Ryan Hughes in the 41st over to leave Country at 120/5. McMillan (5-34) proceeded to eat into the lower order as Country lost five wickets for 16

runs, as Country stuttered their way past 150 before losing their final wicket at the start of the 50th over. Mid Canterbury’s reply could not have begun much worse, as Country’s opening bowling duo Austin Hamilton and Zak Foulkes obliterated Mid Canterbury’s top order with four of the top five falling for 2 or less. Jemmett and James Southby dug in for the home team, putting on 61 for the fifth wicket to haul them off the ropes. Southby then fell for 42 when he was stumped, to leave Mid Canterbury 70/5 and again on the back foot. Captain William Southby joined Jemmett at the crease before the pair added 37 in what was developing into a neck-and-neck tussle. Another two quick wickets edged Country back in front, with another 37 still required. Coming in at nine, Tom Middleton played a crucial cameo in support, hitting two fours and a six in his unbeaten 23 as he and Jemmett, who had held up Mid Canterbury’s effort from the outset, got the hosts home in the 44th over. Mid Canterbury will host South Canterbury in the Hawke Cup at the Ashburton Domain Oval this weekend.

Stags kick off 2021 the right way By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A couple of individual cameos have guided the Tech Stags home to ensure a winning start to the year, romping to an 83run win over Star. Tech had struggled after being sent in to bat by the Timaru club, with a couple of young recruits propping up the Stags’ batting effort. Devon Flannery (67) and Angus Jemmett (32) were the only batsmen to get starts, while Des Kruger (11) was the only other individual to cross double digits as Tech were restricted to 151. Openers Jason Morrison and Bevan Richan were ejected in consecutive overs to leave the Mid Canterbury club at 8/2. It brought the in-form Kruger to the crease who briefly

secured proceedings before he too was removed in the 14th over. At 29/3, it was left to Flannery and Jemmett to get things back on track for the hosts, as the duo put on 49 for the fourth wicket over the next eight overs. Brad Leonard rattled Jemmett’s stumps in the 22nd over however Flannery kept the scoreboard ticking over. Despite a timely half century from the youngster, he was bereft of support at the other end as the Stags lost their final five wickets for 27 runs, to be all out in the 43rd over. Star were restrained by some tight bowling in response, with Alex Hooper and Ryan Bell proving difficult to get away. Openers Phil McGregor and Daniel Campbell were back in the hunt inside the first 10 overs.

The introduction of Jones SCORECARD into the attack caused issues for the top and middle order of Technical 151 (42.2 overs) Devon Flannery 67 Angus Jemmett 32 the Star line-up. Tyler Cox 4-37 He removed Chris Hogan to Star 68 (24.3 overs) leave Star three down before Hitesh Valand 17 Chris Hogan 12 claiming the quick scalps of Harry Jones 4-15 Alex Hooper 3-9 Technical won by 83 runs Adam Fahey and Tyler Cox before the 15th over to leave the club’s chase in tatters. The next two overs saw the visitors unravel further with a run out and another wicket for Jones, when he had Brad Leonard caught and bowled to leave Star at 45/7. Some minor resistance from Hitesh Valand (17) alleviated some of the chagrin, however it was nowhere near enough as Star were dismissed in the 25th over. Jones (4-15) and Hooper (39) completed sterling shifts with the ball, giving nothing away to the opposition bats- Angus Jemmett (above) scored 32 for Tech Stags on Saturday against Star at the Ashmen. burton Domain Oval. COSTELLO THE CONQUERER

Penny Costello kicked the New Year off in the best possible way, taking victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s 36km handicap event round the Winchmore block on Sunday. Costello and her co-markers worked hard to find the front of the race in the later part of the final lap, and held on strongly to keep the chasing bunches at bay. In the sprint to the line it was Costello who had the final say to take the first race of the year. Abbey Horricks had a great ride to secure second place, followed

by Liz Wylie, who produced a storming ride to charge into third. Nigel Chatterton will be pleased with his early year form taking fourth place, with Helen Bancroft and Paul Summerfield rounding out the top six. Scratch marker Brent Spencer led in a quality group of co-markers to secure fastest time honours, riding the distance in 49 minutes flat. The ever-consistent Tony Ward, and Sam Manson se-

The front markers Honor Bradford and Penny Marriott rode strongly to find the line first. It was Bradford who had the best of the sprint finish to claim victory, with Marriott taking sec-

ond place. Ryan Gallagher carried over his good end-of-year form to take third place. Zac Brookland and Zoe Spillane made their trip north worth-

while, securing fourth and fifth respectively. Sixth placegetter and back marker Mitch Brookland claimed fastest time honours, covering the course in 29 minutes 47 seconds. Debbie Skinner earned bragging rights in division 2 as she powered home first in a bunch sprint from Kenny Johnston and Andy Skinner. Next week the club contests a 45km handicap event, to be raced around the Christies Road block.
