Library’s virtual reality check By Maddison Gourlay maddison.g@theguardian.co.nz
Children’s librarian Jonathan Nixon grins from ear to ear when he gets to tell people about the library’s new virtual reality console. Due to some technical difficulties on casting to the television and staff supervising schedule, he hopes to have it up and running for the public soon. The virtual reality console is one of a few things the library have invested in, in preparation for their shift to the new Library and Civic Centre. Updating as much technology as they can now, will mean they will be ready in their new space as soon as possible. The library plans to be fully operational the second the doors open on the first day at their new home. The virtual reality console is just one of the gaming consoles which will be available at the library and it will be available for anyone over the age of 13, due to health and safety regulations. Although some people might not want to play or be too young, there is a television that shows what’s going on inside the headset allowing spectators to see what is going
on. Nixon is thrilled about the new addition to the library, and is eager for people to use the device. “Ever since I was a little boy in the 90s, I watched Beyond 2000. “A TV show that looked into new technology. “They showed virtual reality, I always wanted to try it,” Nixon said. There are already a few games and features on the device, more will be added over time. One option available is a National Geographic mode, where you can explore Machu Picchu and Antarctica. You can also roam the international space station, and a 4D type version of space invaders. There is also accessibility to a YouTube playlist of places around the world, which have been filmed on a 360 degree camera. “It’s armchair travel on the next level,” Nixon said. The Guardian can confirm if you suffer from motion sickness, do not try the tour of the International Space Station as Nixon might have to stop you from falling over multiple times. Updates on when the headset will be available will be released on the library’s Facebook page and other social media channels.

The Hinds District Lions helps causes such as the Maia Health Foundation regularly, presenting money to Carew Peel Forest School, as well as smaller projects and grants in the district. A Princely tale remembered How a Mid Canty youngster got to meet the Duke By Daryl Holden daryl.h@theguardian.co.nz
There’s a very good reason why Ashburton’s Robyn Stockdale says she’s been “in awe’’ of the late Prince Philip all of her life. As a nervous but excited seven-year-old in 1977, Stockdale (then Heywood), enjoyed a quick but very personal chat at Caroline Bay in Timaru with the Duke of Edinburgh, who died at Windsor Castle at the age of 99 last Friday. The Duke and the Queen were on a whirlwind visit in February 1977 as part of a tour of the Commonwealth celebrating Her Majesty’s silver jubilee for 25 years on the throne. Stockdale was a member of the Chertsey Brownies and recalled anxiously hoping to see the couple on that hot summer’s day. “I remember we were behind the ropes but I don’t remember how long we were waiting for,’’ Stockdale said. “I do remember that we got told that if the Prince or the Queen talked to us, that we had to be very polite.’’ All the Chertsey Brownies were lined up, standing proudly in their uniforms. Well, all except Stockdale. She couldn’t stand because of a knee injury. That turned out to be the ultimate royal blessing in disguise. “Because I had this bandage on my leg, I couldn’t stand up with the rest of the Brownies. I was sitting down on the ground. Prince Philip saw that and he came up to me. He bent down to talk to me.’’ And what did he say? “He asked me how I hurt my leg,’’ Stockkdale said. “I said I fell over when I was roller-skating. “He said, ‘that’s a dangerous sport to play’.’’ And that was it. Stockdale’s moment with royalty was gone as quickly as it took place. Fleeting though it was, it’s something Stockdale has never forgotten. The Duke’s death has brought those memories flooding back. “I’ve been in awe of him all of my life because he stopped to talk to me, but I haven’t been in awe of the Queen so much. She didn’t stop to talk to me,’’ Stockdale said, having a laugh that perhaps the late and colourful Duke may also have enjoyed.

Flying Kiwi fails, plans return By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
“Defeat, but not a disaster.” It was a land speed record attempt seven years in the making and ruined within two minutes. Christchurch’s Phil Garrett and Ashburton’s Rob Small of Flying Kiwi Motorcycles, had the goal to surpass 307km/h on a customised motorcycle on a closed McCrorys Road in Pendarves at the weekend, but mechanical issues on the first run ended the attempt prematurely. Garrett got the custom built Mongrel 1300 Kawasaki to around 230km/h before it broke down – beyond immediate repair. Having had some time to reflect on how things panned out, Garrett said rather than disappointment the emotion he had settled on was gratitude. He was grateful to the support from the hundreds of people over the years in the lead up to the attempt and those that helped on the weekend, including a supportive Pendarves community. “The thing I’m most grateful of is that I’m not lying down staring at a hospital ceiling,” he said. Garrett had almost perfect conditions for the record attempt on Friday but things “didn’t quite go as we planned”. On the first run the engine developed problems at 230km/h with oil spraying over Garrett and the bike’s back tyre. “I was on the bike all of about two minutes. “The bike started fish-tailing side to side and I was struggling to keep the thing pointed in the right direction while I tried to

The Flying Kiwi crew staring defeat in the face as they realise the damage to the bike was much worse than first thought at the land speed record attempt at the weekend. PHOTO SUPPLIED slow down and keep upright.” He managed to do that thanks to “an instinctive reaction as to how to deal with it”. “I got lucky as I didn’t really want to step off at 230km/h.” Believing it was a blown head gasket, Garrett and the support crew set about rectifying the issue, stripping the bike down with the aim of repairing it in time to have another run on Sunday. “We pulled it all apart and discovered things were much worse.” The decision was then made by Garrett and Small to aban-
don the attempt on Saturday night as the bike they had spent thousands of hours preparing for the attempt was still “in 1000 pieces on my workshop floor with three melted pistons”. It meant that his dream “is over for now and we have to accept defeat”. “It wasn’t meant to be this time and as hard as it is to accept, we both know that we have made the right decision. “I find it very hard to accept defeat as we have overcome all sorts of challenges on our journey with a true can-do attitude and the help of our friends, but
this time we are beaten – for now.” As soon as he announced his record attempt was over, he was overwhelmed with messages of support, so much so he said he has no choice but to give it another crack. “I think other people have made the decision for me in a unanimous wave of support. “It’s really humbling.” It is not quite back to the drawing board, but the badly damaged bike will take some time, and money, to be repaired with Garrett and crew intent on giving it another go next year.
Advance Ashburton looks for new appointment
Advance Ashburton chair Mary Ross
Burnett St closed for two days
Advance Ashburton is looking for a new executive officer. The appointment, advertised in the Ashburton Guardian at the weekend, is looking to replace Sandi Wood who resigned late last month after three-anda-half years’ service. Chair of Advance Ashburton Community Foundation, Mary Ross, said the appointment is key to the organisation’s future as it continues to grow. “It’s an integral component of
the foundation’s goal to promote and support the Ashburton District as a whole,” she said. Advance Ashburton was established in 2003 as a registered charity that makes regular financial grants to the community. “We encompass the whole of Mid Canterbury and provide funding not just to Ashburton but throughout the district,” Ross said. The next major funding round is currently open for applica-
tions and closes on May 10. Grants are available for groups covering areas such as welfare, health, education and cultural activities. “Funding for the round is provided from interest on investment earned during the 2020’21 financial year,” Ross said. While a new appointment is being sought, Advance Ashburton will be run on a day-to-day basis by trustees, volunteers and local business firms.
Burnett Street will be closed for two days this week as it gets a new road surface as part of Ashburton’s $15 million CBD revitilisation project. The Ashburton District Council’s contractor, Tru-Line Civil, will temporarily close Burnett Street for two days while it applies the asphalt and lays pavers near Cass Street. Burnett Street will be closed to traffic from 7am on Thursday until 7am on Saturday, however, pedestrians will still have access. Due to the unexpected availability of additional contractor staff, the council has brought forward some of the work for Havelock Street. Wastewater pipe upgrades began on Tuesday and the road is temporarily reduced to one-way traffic until the end of the week. Havelock Street’s west-bound lane heading to East Street is closed while the pipeline is installed which is expected to be completed by the end of the week. The East Street upgrades have been tracking along, with a new timber deck, gardens, and ramp to the Burnett Street railway crossing – which remains closed during the construction – nearing completion. The council anticipates the work in that area will wrap up shortly. Meanwhile, the original programme for upgrading the intersections of Moore, Tancred, Burnett and Havelock streets with East Street involved full intersection closures for up to four weeks at a time, but upon discussing the programme with CBD retailers, the council is considering options that would enable East Street to remain open to vehicles, potentially via one lane during the construction period. A decision will be made public in next week and any decision may change the order in which the intersections are upgraded, with the first intersection upgrade anticipated to start in the first week of May. The new smart parking sensors are on hold until the street wifi is ready to be connected, with both to be installed and commissioned at the same time along Tancred, Cass and Moore streets.

Rakaia students want PM to make Kate Sheppard a dame By Maddison Gourlay maddison.g@theguardian.co.nz
Some very young students from Rakaia School are determined to get New Zealand’s most famous suffragist Kate Sheppard a well-deserved posthumous damehood. Doing it the Kate Sheppard way, some Year 5 and 6 primary school students created a petition and have sent it to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. They’re pushing for the recognition because they realised through their studies that the Rakaia School’s houses were named after four famous New Zealanders, Sir Ernest Rutherford (red house), Sir Peter Blake (blue), Sir Edmund Hillary (green) and Sheppard (yellow). But Sheppard was the only one without a title. More than 130 students and teachers signed the petition, which also included at least 20 drawn smiley faces that they hoped would put a smile on the Prime Minister’s face. A copy of the email was also sent to Labour Party Minister of Women, Jan Tinetti, National Party spokesperson for women Nicola Grigg, and National Party leader Judith Collins. So far the group have received only automated replies. But they were hopeful their petition could do the one thing they felt Kate Sheppard richly deserved. “We believe strongly that she deserves the title of Dame as much as our other knighted New Zealanders,’’ they wrote in their email.

PHOTO SUPPLIED “It would be great if you could bend the rules or make a new one for a much-loved epic changer-of-world-history, who was from our little country, New Zealand.’’ Teacher aide Rebecca Wiseman helped the students by undertaking research on how to get the title for Sheppard, whose years of campaigning and petition organising enabled New Zealand to be the first country in the world to allow women to vote in 1983. The last known posthumous knighthood in
New Zealand went to Sir Robert Chambers of the supreme court in 2013. He was awarded a knighthood after his sudden death because the process had been approved before he died. Rakaia Primary School principal Mark Ellis was proud of the efforts of his students and Wiseman. “I’m really proud of them, and Rebecca, and how she has supported the pupils,” he said.

String quartet The New Zealand String Quartet (NZSQ) are mostly a dedicated group of four classical musicians but, for their latest tour, they’re accompanying five talented vocalists. In a programme, entitled Four Suits and a Soprano, they’re performing at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this Saturday at 7.30pm. The NZSQ is in its 34th season and is considered New Zealand’s premiere chamber music ensemble. They are described as establishing an international reputation for their “insightful interpretations, compelling communication and dynamic performing style”. On this tour they’ve commissioned special arrangements for five impressive New Zealanders who’ll sing operatic standards from Nessun Dorma through to pop classics. The artists include Ipu Laga’aia, Chris McRae, Sophie Morris, Rutene Spooner and Laughton Kora.
Rates rebate With a hefty rate increase likely in Mid Canterbury, the Office for Seniors is reminding people they could be eligible for a rates rebate. A rates rebate is a partial refund for people who pay rates to a council. The government funded office said people who pay rates on their residence, might be eligible for a rebate of up to $655. It said the scheme only applies to the one property lived in and not to multiple properties or holiday homes. “You can also apply for a rates rebate if you live in a retirement village but require the signature of your village manager,” the office said. It advised people to check on www.govt.nz to find out their eligibility, what to do if they live in a trust owned property, and how much they could be entitled to with the online rebate calculator. Ratepayers have until June 30, 2021 to post or drop off their application form.

Duke’s legacy lives on By Daryl Holden daryl.h@theguardian.co.nz
H
e once described himself as the world’s most experienced plaque-unveiler. There was probably some truth to that tongue in cheek remark, though in reality the Duke of Edinburgh was so much more. But that was Prince Philip for you. He was always a jocular if sometimes controversial figure, who died last Friday at Windsor Castle, aged 99. His death has brought to an end a remarkable partnership and 73year marriage with Queen Elizabeth. The Queen quite obviously will be lost without him because the Prince was her number one supporter through good times and bad, the ups and downs of which there have been many in recent times. But he was always diligently and tirelessly at her side, handling thousands of public duties in a subsidiary role to his wife that can’t have always been that easy for the navy veteran. Yes, he came across as a tough figure and he most definitely had the ability to put his foot in his gob when speaking. But let’s not forget that he was the patron of many causes and one of his greatest legacies in New Zealand was the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, which hundreds of youngsters have gone through. The Prince also had an intellectual side that perhaps wasn’t publicly recognised as much as it should have been. He had a private art collection and a huge library at Buckingham Palace contained hundreds of cookbooks, which was among thousands of works on everything from philosophy and birds to mountaineering and more. He was also a man who spent much of his life encouraging innovation and good design. The global equivalent of the Nobel Prize for engineers, the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, was even founded at his behest. And he was, of course, extremely popular in New Zealand. He even left a Chertsey youngster in awe of him when he noticed she had a leg injury and bent down to talk to her in Timaru on the 1977 royal jubilee tour. But now the focus will be his funeral where, in a much-anticipated side element, grandson Harry will attend. It will be the first time Harry has seen any of his family for more than a year after he and wife Meghan said goodbye to the monarchy, fled to the United States and fired those shots in the recent Oprah interview. Meghan won’t be there because she’s pregnant, but all eyes will no doubt be on the body language between Harry and family during the funeral. You can imagine, too, that the Duke would be looking down from above. He, possibly more than anyone, would hope that his death may actually serve as an opportunity to build bridges and heal the rift. The Duke, even in death, could yet have an even bigger impact on the Royal Family than he has already.

Last chance to have your say on Long-Term Plan T
his past five weeks, the Ashburton District Council has been accepting feedback from residents on what we plan to do in the district over the next 10 years, and it’s not too late to have your say too. Consultation on our draft Long-Term Plan 2021-31 is open until 5pm, Monday, April 19 so don’t miss this chance to tell us what you think of our proposals before the plan is finalised. For those who have already submitted their feedback, thank you for your contribution. It will be invaluable when the time comes for council to deliberate on the proposals. If you have not yet had your say, we are inviting feedback on anything in the plan – you can even put forward your own ideas for consideration. But there are two main issues we really want your thoughts on. The first is how we fund Elderly Persons Housing, and the second is whether council should install water meters on all properties connected to our drinking water schemes. With regards to Elderly Persons Housing, council is proposing to incrementally increase rents each year until they are covering the costs of providing and maintaining the homes. This option would

eventually remove the need for funding from other ratepayers and would ensure our reserves for the houses do not run out of money. Meanwhile, water meters are being proposed as a way for council to reduce the amount of water we are losing through leaks and inefficient use. Estimates suggest we could be losing up to 50 per cent of our water in these ways, which is not only a huge waste of water but also comes at a financial cost: we still have to pump and treat the water regardless of whether it is used or not. One of the questions we have been hearing from residents is how meters would actually help to find and fix these leaks. The answer lies in their ability to monitor water consumption which council can use to assess whether houses are using an abnormal amount of water. In these instances, we can then identify if that may be because of a leak. This method has already been used in Mt Somers and May-
field where meters have been installed. Council also uses meters on some of our own watermain networks and carries out acoustic monitoring to find leaks.
The meters on private properties on the remainder of our schemes would further complement these efforts. I encourage you to visit our website ItsOurPlace.nz today
to see the full proposals and provide your feedback on our draft plan. Remember, submissions are open until Monday, April 19, so make your voice count.
Why are we subsidising environmental harm? By Mike Joy
T
he school strikes for the climate are not a fad and they’re not going away. They should be a wake-up call. The kids are telling us they have had enough, that we “grownups” aren’t grown-up enough to do anything real about a planetary-level threat to future generations. While emissions of all pollutants inexorably rise and we waltz past tipping point after tipping point, we continue to talk and talk and set up working groups and commissions and expert panels. We commission reports – how this government loves a report! – and we monitor impacts, and we survey people. We do nothing real. It isn’t like we haven’t been warned. I was one of tens of thousands of scientists who signed up to a series of ‘World Scientists’ Warnings to Humanity’. These are warnings about everything from the collapse of food-webs and micro-organisms to freshwater biodiversity declines. Their common conclusion is, “If human behaviour the world over doesn’t change soon there will be catastrophic biodiversity loss and untold amounts of human misery”. Read that sentence again.
When a scientist says “catastrophic biodiversity loss”, it doesn’t mean “we might lose a panda”. It means roughly “head for the lifeboats”, except that planets don’t have lifeboats. We can either make hard changes or we can go down with the ship. Earlier this year another critical paper authored by 17 leading scientists was published, based on 150 studies, under the provocative title: Underestimating the Challenges of Avoiding a Ghastly Future. It outlined how close we are to collapsing the life-supporting capacity of this planet, unless we radically change how we live. Contrast that title with the daily headlines about travel bubbles and “getting back to normal”. No wonder the kids are marching. One quote from the ‘ghastly future’ paper struck a chord with me: “Humanity is running an ecological Ponzi scheme in which society robs nature and future generations to pay for boosting incomes in the short term”. This sums up exactly what I see happening with freshwater in this country. We are continually kicking the can down the road. A perfect example of this can-kicking is Te Waihora (Lake Ellesmere) in Canterbury. Like most of our lowland lakes in in-
tensive agricultural catchments, it is dying due to excess nutrient inputs. To save the lake from further deterioration, farming intensity in the catchment would have to be curtailed. The regional council Environment Canterbury (ECan) and Ministry for the Environment (MfE) did an analysis on the economics of two actions to reduce the pollution and try to save the lake. The options: reduce farming intensity in the catchment, (most nutrients come from dairy farming) or construct a wetland to take up the nutrients prior to reaching the lake. The analysis concluded that the cost to dairy farmers in lost revenue would be around $250 million yearly. The wetland option would have a one-off cost of $380m, much of which would go towards buying land and taking it out of dairy production. So guess what they decided to do? Nothing at all. They concluded that the economic impact of mitigation was too high either way, and so nothing would be done. In other words, let future generations deal with this issue. It’s not like they’ll be busy dealing with rising seas or disastrous new weather patterns, right? And in fact, when you run the numbers, we are effectively subsidising dairy farming in this catchment to the tune of $350m
Your say Tell us what you think. Email: editorial@ theguardian.co.nz to $380m every year. We are not just bequeathing the death of Lake Ellesmere to the future. We’re paying top dollar to have it killed. Contrast this with the spending choices we’ve made around Lakes Taupo and Rotorua. To protect both these lakes, taxpayers are paying farmers in the lake catchments to take cows off the land. The price tag is around $90m for Taupo and $40m for Rotorua. For Rotorua the aim is to reduce nitrate flow into the lake by 100 tonnes, a nice round figure which makes it easy to see that we are paying $400 to prevent each kilogram of nitrate from reaching the lake. The total amount of nitrate leached to water from dairy farming in the 2017 year in Canterbury alone was above 30m kilos. If we paid to protect Canterbury waterways at the rates we paid in the two North Island lake examples, it would amount to a cost of $12 billion per year. Effectively, we are allowing dairy in Canterbury – just in
Canterbury – to do $12b worth of free polluting every year. To put that into perspective a recent report said that the total dairy industry contributed $7.8b per year to the NZ economy. It is future generations who will pay this cost. It’s part of the polluted inheritance we are leaving them to deal with. Human civilisation was utterly changed when we started powering our lives with fossil fuels, and making synthetic nitrogen using fossil fuels. Fossil carbon polluted our atmosphere, nitrogen our freshwaters. For both it seemed like a fantastic idea at the time. A century later we can see the harm. It is past time we made real change. The right to pollute can no longer come as a free side benefit of land ownership. Kicking the can down the road has failed. It’s time the grown-ups finally listened to the kids and gave them back their future. *Dr Mike Joy is a freshwater ecologist and environmental scientist at Victoria University of Wellington. Seminar on rural mental health Left – Craig Wiggins says he has been approached by farm service providers and rural professionals who are regularly finding farmers who want to discuss their mental state of mind. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN
By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz
Rural professionals and others servicing the rural community are being invited to a seminar in Ashburton on May 19 aimed at providing them with the tools needed when faced with farmers struggling with stress and mental health issues. Mid Canterbury-based rural advocate and commentator Craig “Wiggy” Wiggins said wellknown mental health advocates such as Sir John Kirwan, Mike King and Doug Avery had gone public with their personal stories to make it okay for people to speak more openly about their own turmoil and anxiety. “This means those who need help are feeling they can come out and seek help. “Recently I have been approached by a few farm service providers and rural professionals such as environmental advisors stating that they and their staff are regularly finding farmers who want to discuss their mental state of mind. Some are very emotional. “The people I have spoken to have realised that they are dealing with a turning point in a client’s life, a cry for help or a desperate plea to relieve the pressure. “This is not every farmer, but with the increased pressures of freshwater legislation, winter grazing regulations, farm succession planning, staffing issues and
their own physical health taking a toll on many a farmer, more are opening up to those they trust. “The professionals that I have been approached by feel they are
untrained and nervous about the situation they or their staff find themselves in and don’t know how to get out of the professional space and into a personal space
with their clients. “Is what they are seeing serious and what or where do they go for help?” To support and educate rural service people that are the link to the rural community, the seminar would provide information on what to look for, what questions to ask and where to direct farmers for assistance when they were asking for help. Slade McFarland, a former Maori All Black and now field officer for Mates in Construction, which offers a similar service in the construction industry, will speak at the seminar, along with a Rural Support Trust representative, a rural GP, a suicide prevention group and mental wellness coach. Mates in Construction was aimed at significantly improving mental wellness and reducing suicide in the construction industry. McFarland has spoken on Wiggins’ online farmer forum group Whatever with Wiggy which runs on Thursday nights on Zoom. “This industry, like farming, has huge issues with suicide and mental illness and Mates in Construction has a proven programme which teaches and develops people’s skills in spotting
those that need help and how to support them into the right help. “This programme works, it is our people looking after our people and delivered at a grass roots level,” Wiggins said. “We don’t need to develop a rural programme with bells and whistles we can just take Mates in Construction’s programme and put Red Bands on it.” In rural New Zealand, one of the biggest contributors to mental stress was the isolation of people, Wiggins said. “Many farmers or farming families only have a small number of people they associate with, due to isolation, hours worked and closed social life. “It may be a stock agent, a vet, a rural mechanic, their bank manager, and rural merchandise representative, for example.” These people had a relationship of trust with the farmer, for example, a stock agent asked to purchase a thousand lambs at $100 each and were the link to breaking down the isolation and recognising if a farmer was struggling, Wiggins said. The seminar will be on May 19 at the Ashburton Racecourse starting at 10am. Registration details will be available soon.

A government committed to fairness and responsible law-making should not allow two bills recently drawn from the Members’ Ballot to sink without debate, Federated Farmers says. “At the very least the Regulatory Standards Bill and the Income Tax (Adjustment of Taxable Income Ranges) Amendment Bill deserve to go to select committee for examination and public submissions,” Federated Farmers’ president Andrew Hoggard said. The Regulatory Standards Bill would require any proposed legislation to be subject to clear analysis of the problem the legislation is aimed at solving, a thorough cost-benefit analysis of expected outcomes and adequate consultation with affected parties. “Quite frankly with such requirements,

the Essential Freshwater Legislation and the Crown Pastoral Land Reform Bill – to name just two recent examples – would not have got through as written,” Hoggard said. Simon Bridges’ Income Tax Amendment Bill would require tax thresholds to be adjusted every three years in line with the cost of living, with Treasury advising on the proper threshold adjustment. “It would put a halt to New Zealanders moving into higher tax brackets even when their income isn’t keeping up with the rising cost of living, putting an end to inflation being an annual tax increase by stealth. “This is about fairness, pure and simple. If a government wants to argue it needs higher tax revenue then let it be open with the electorate about that, not achieve it via the tax creep we now have,” Hoggard said.

Synlait CEO resigns By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz
Synlait’s chief executive Leon Clement has resigned, just two weeks after the Canterbury-based dairy exporter reported that its profit forecast would be slashed to “broadly break-even” for the year. Synlait co-founder John Penno will return to his former chief executive role in the interim following Clement’s departure at the end of this month. Recruitment will be initiated shortly for a permanent replacement. Clement has been chief executive since 2018. The board said it recognised the substantial impact that Covid-19 has had on Synlait and the difficult challenge this would present to any management team. Earlier this month Synlait reported a 76 per cent plunge in half-year after-tax profits to just $6.4 million. Last year it posted a full-year profit of $75.2m, but expects to
be “broadly break-even” this year. Synlait has been hit by a sudden drop in infant nutrition demand after its cornerstone customer and shareholder The a2 Milk Company was impacted by disrupted “daigou” unofficial trade channels into China. Synlait chair Graeme Milne said Clement had been an authentic and transformational leader. “He has successfully repositioned Synlait’s purpose, ambition, and strategy to make us a more diversified and sustainable company.” Clement said it had been a privilege to lead Synlait. “It has been an intensive period of change and growth and I am proud of our achievements.” During his tenure, Synlait purchased Dairyworks, extending the company’s consumer foods strategy, as well as completing its greenfields Pokeno plant in south Auckland and Dunsandel dry store four project. Synlait’s shares are trading at $3.43, down 52 per cent on the same time last year.

Swapping Swanndris for glad rags at get-togethers By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz
Farming families are being encouraged to get off-farm and socialise at special get-togethers planned for the district over the next two months including a Mid Canterbury Rural Community Ball. Quiz nights will also be held at Methven and Hinds in the next month. Mid Canterbury-based rural advocate and commentator Craig “Wiggy” Wiggins has helped initiate the events, supported by Farmlands, the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust
and Federated Farmers. Wiggins said it was important to rejuvenate rural social connections and communities, as this, in turn, improved farmers’ wellbeing. “One of the problems we are seeing in rural New Zealand is that farmers are isolated and are not talking to each other enough. Now we all have cellphones we talk to each other a lot less. “The most important thing you can do is be part of your community, as everything you put in you get back in spades.” Horse racing meetings, rodeos and A&P Shows had been attracting greater numbers since
Covid-19 restrictions were lifted, as people realised they needed to get off-farm, though people were still tending to stay local, Wiggins said. Previously, a Farming Families Day at the Races had attracted hundreds from throughout Canterbury to mid-winter Ashburton Trotting Club meetings in 2018 and 2019, but after last year’s event was scratched because of Covid-19 restrictions, organisers decided to try something different this year. The quiz night at Methven racecourse’s Goodwin Lounge on April 30 at 7.30pm will have a duck shooting theme, while the second, at the Southern Rugby
Clubrooms at Hinds on May 7 will have a sports theme. Teams of four to six people will have the chance to test their knowledge, with prizes for best dressed in the theme of the night. Plans were to have “local heroes” speak at both events. To register, contact farmingfamilies4u@gmail.com or check the Facebook page @farmingfamilies4u. The Mid Canterbury Rural Community Ball on June 12 at the Hotel Ashburton was an opportunity for people “to get their glad rags on”, Wiggins said. “We invite everyone to come and bring your teenagers, as it is
a family event.” Ticket numbers were limited to 400. Early bird tickets at $65 for people with a rural address go on sale on April 19, with remaining tickets at $75 on sale from May 1. Tickets can be booked online at www.trybooking.com. The ticket price includes a buffet dinner, with a cash bar for beverages. The ball will feature entertainment by popular Wanaka-based country singer Jody Direen and local schoolgirl Molly Harrison. A charity auction will run throughout the evening, with giveaway prizes also on offer.

In brief
Orange rules the roost
Premier double Young junior driver John Morrison picked up a premier night double at Addington on Friday night, continuing a great season in the sulky. Morrison saluted with smart three-year-old filly, Life’s A Beach early in the night before grabbing his second victory with a cagey drive on the in-form Time In A Bottle for Geraldine trainer, Sandra Mounce. The former Mid Cantabrian then added another for the weekend when Classy Dancer won in Southland on Saturday.

New Zealand’s leading harness racing driver, Blair Orange, made Methven his own on Sunday. Fresh off winning the Group One New Zealand Derby at Addington on Friday night, Orange put on a masterclass to win three races on the programme, putting a firm line underneath why he’s been universally regarded as one of the best to ever sit in a sulky. He grabbed a win early in the day with the Greg and Nina Hope – also fresh off a Group One success on Friday night – trained, Dalness First then produced victories with Takemybreathaway and Mikey Maguire. The latter came in the day’s feature, the Woodlands Mt Hutt Cup, for trainer Fred Fletcher, and proved a popular success on the day’s programme, rivalled only by the win of Takemybreathaway. That particular victory gave trainer Fred Scott his first win as a trainer since he took over the North Canterbury stable of his son Glenn, who is battling serious illness. A good friend of Scott, Orange would have enjoyed being able to bring some pleasure to the family at what is such a difficult time in their lives. The trio of victories took Orange to 133 driving wins for the season – 30 clear of his nearest rival, John Dunn. While Orange stole the show at
Impressive return Ashburton galloper Commitment produced a standout performance to run third in the opening race at Riccarton on Saturday for local trainer, Robyn Ayton. The fouryear-old gelding hadn’t been seen since February, but swept to the lead at the top of the straight in the first of the day, and looked the winner before succumbing to the late challengers to finish third. It capped a good week for Ayton, who also picked up two placings at Ashburton last Wednesday.
Low chases success Blair Orange and Dalness First have the field covered in Race 2 at Methven on Sunday. the meeting, the locals kept their name on the scoresheet too, when John Hay produced Taurus to win a maiden event early on in the day. The three-year-old gelding by Raging Bull came from a long way off the speed over the short course distance and won with a bit of authority. It was triple success for Hay who not only trained and drove
the gelding, but also owns him as well. Hay’s record over the past few seasons is quite incredible. This season he’s raced a horse on 38 occasions, and has netted five victories and 12 minor placings. Last season he produced 60 starts for 11 winners and 21 placings, and for the past four seasons has enjoyed a strike-rate of
Tinwald horsewoman, Raewyn Low will be out to end a threeyear drought today when she lines three horses up at Forbury Park. Low, who trains a small team from the base which is formerly the home of Brian Saunders, has maiden pacers Stella’s Delight, Marquess De Troit and Missmollygoodgolly entered at the low-key meeting. The latter of the trio looks the best chance off the back of some strong recent form. Low’s last winner was Magic Blaze at Forbury Park back in 2018.

almost 50 per cent with runners to top three finishes. Sunday proved a successful day for the Methven club, who now have just one more meeting remaining for the season on Monday, April 26. Close to $1.1 million was invested on the meeting at the Mt Harding course across the 12 races, with a big crowd enjoying the sunshine on-course.
Leo O’Reilly looks to urge Alene home in race three at Methven, but the duo eventually had to surrender to winner, Major Collect on the inside.

Seriously social BASKETBALL
The Oxford Street basketball stadium has been a hive of activity in recent weeks, with a number of different competitions being held across varying age groups. Last week the Social Mixed Grade competition wrapped up for the season, after 10 great weeks of basketball that by far exceeded the expectations of those charged with running it. In 2020, the competition saw just six teams entered to compete, and organisers Sophie Currie and Amy Ferguson were hopeful of reaching the same number again – but were left feeling a little surprised. “We were blown away when we had nine teams register,” Currie said. Co-ordinated by the pair, along with support from Basketball Mid Canterbury, the competition is being regarded as a massive success. “We saw some fantastic games, both physical and competitive match-ups as well as some blow outs where everyone was encouraged to have a go.
“There was a good mix of talented ballers amongst some non-basketballers and that’s what it was really about for us – making basketball accessible in the Mid Canterbury community.” Of course, there had to be winners, and this year it was Team Amazeballs who went through the season undefeated, and beat Lavalava in what was a hard-fought final. The organising crew also decided to award a fair play award for the competition, which highlighted the team who took on the nature of the competition and were always having lots of fun. The award this year went to Team Boozers, who, despite not winning a game, epitomised everything the competition was about. Meanwhile, the Men’s A Grade competition for 2021 is just around the corner, set to begin on Wednesday, April 28, while the Ashburton College sides are busy preparing for the Thomson and Whelan competitions which kick off in May.

RUGBY LEAGUE
Tough start for Baabaas By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Home track advantage Gus Hurrell took full advantage of a little home track knowledge to claim victory in Mid Canterbury Bowls Open Junior Singles on the weekend. Playing on his home green of the Ashburton MSA Bowling Club on Racecourse Road, Hurrell continued a strong season on the greens of the district to claim the coveted title, which is for newcomers in the early stages of their playing days. After a strong and competitive day of qualifying on Saturday, only four players earned the right to return on Sunday to compete for the title. Hurrell took on Allenton’s Mick Buchanan in one semi-final while his club-mate, Russell Ward, played Methven’s Wayne McCarthy and was victorious, setting up an all Ashburton MSA final – much to the delight of the club members who were in attendance. Hurrell’s class shone through in the final where he proved too strong for Ward in the race to 21 shots, winning 21-9. The event brought to an end the summer bowling season locally with the calendar of events, now bare aside from some winter tournaments. Pictured is Allenton’s Greg Harrison in action.
The new look Ashburton Barbarians rugby league side endured a tough introduction to the Canterbury Cup Premier Reserves grade on the weekend losing to Woolston 36-4. The side, which comprises of a huge number of new players to the sport here in Mid Canterbury, were always going to take a few weeks to build into their work, and while disappointed with the loss, coach Matt Milne will have his eyes firmly locked on their next target. “For us, it’s going to take a couple of rounds to get ourselves into the swing of things,” he said last week. “But we will come right, I know we will and we’re going to win a fair few games of rugby league this season.” Just getting a team onto the paddock was a huge result for the club after five weeks ago, there was talk of not being able to field a team. The call went out and the Barbarians can now boast of a squad of close to 30 – made up of half a dozen returning players from previous seasons and a whole new swathe of players from around the district. The side will get a chance to bounce back this weekend when they play their first home game of the competition at Robilliard Park on Saturday when the Halswell Hornets come to pay them a visit.

RUGBY
First blood to Southern, Rakaia By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Southern and Rakaia picked up valuable competition points in the opening round of the Combined Country Rugby competition on the weekend. Their two victories formed the positive side of a mixed bag for Mid Canterbury sides, with Methven losing to Prebbleton on the final whistle and Hampstead going down to the powerful Southbridge outfit. In Hornby, Rakaia managed to head back down State Highway One to home base with maximum points after their four-try victory at Denton Park Oval. Facing the season with a very new-looking squad to the experienced side we’ve become accustomed to in recent years, Kyle Gray’s challenge to his players this week was to start confidently and get points on the board, and that’s exactly what they did. Tries to Deon Biggs, Thomas Whittaker, Tim Hanrahan and
Gordon Hausia set the platform, and Harvey Blyth added two conversions to see them get home 24-18. At the Hinds Domain, Southern survived a comeback from Waihora to gain valuable early points winning 21-18 in a nail-biter. After a strong pre-season build-up, there was plenty of hope in the Southern camp for a strong start to the season, and that’s exactly what they delivered. After an early Waihora penalty had them trailing, Southern kicked into gear, and took their rivals apart inside the first 40 minutes. A brace of tries to strong-running centre Petero Tuwai put them in control, with George Williams adding the extras on both occasions. Up 14-3, Southern really put the foot down just before the break, when flanker Jake Jarman crossed and Williams added two more points to see them head into the break up 21-3. That would be the last time Southern would score though. Waihora turned their game

Petero Tuwai impressed with the ball in hand, scoring two tries for Southern. around in the second half, and slowly but surely clawed back the deficit to be down by just four in the late stages of the game. Southern stood tall, however, and produced a valiant defensive performance to withstand the challenge and get the win on the board – giving coaches, Jon Dampney and Richard McClea a strong start to their coaching tenure. Over in Prebbleton, Methven saw victory snatched from their grasp in the dying seconds of the match, when a penalty buried them 22-23 on the final whistle. In an absolute belter of a match, Methven had just minutes before put themselves in front with a late converted try, and only had to round out the match to get the win on the board. But Prebbleton, playing in front of their vocal supporter base, had other ideas and Meth-
ven could only watch as the penalty attempt sailed through the uprights to give the win to their hosts. Methven scored tries through Matt Stone, Tiger Holmes and Tait Chisman, while Reuben Early added two conversions and Brenton Connell kicked a penalty. It’ll be a tough pill for the Methven side to swallow, but they’ll now have to charge themselves with lifting themselves back up to prepare for a round two clash with Lincoln this weekend at the Methven Domain. It was a tough day at the office for Hampstead too, unable to repel the challenge of a strong Southbridge outfit who won 3112. Hampstead showed plenty of promise in the defeat though, and will come through the match stronger for having had a good solid hit-out as they now look to-

FOOTBALL
Happy hunting for MC United By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Smiles all round, and the season finally under way. Mid Canterbury United’s two senior football sides will head into this week buoyed by two strong performances on Saturday afternoon at the Ashburton Domain that saw them register their first competition points for the season. Taking on St Albans Shirley Football Club, both the senior men’s side and the reserve grade side picked up points in their respective grades, with solid victories on home turf. After a couple of tough losses, the senior side showed their true worth on Saturday, coming from behind to register an important 2-1 victory – thanks in large to an absolute belter from Nic Eden, who came off the bench, to punch one into the goal to give his side the lead – and ultimately success. St Albans took an early lead in the match through a penalty which left the home ground supporters a little nervous, but a quick reply – from the
ever-reliable boot of Luke Martin – brought the scores back to level, and they remained that way until Eden banged home the match-winner. The win pushed Mid Canterbury United up to sixth in the championship standings and equal with Burwood, who they will incidentally play this coming weekend. Back-to-back victories would see the side sitting just on the peripheral of the top four early on in the competition. Earlier in the afternoon the Mid Canterbury United Reserves side also picked up their first competition win when they emphatically beat the St Albans Reserves, 3-1. It was the first match the side played for the season after their previous week’s game against Waimak wasn’t played – so maximum competition points from the first game of the season puts them in good stead. Goals for the reserve side came from Ben Sutton, Joel Chand and Parker Bradford. They too will tackle Burwood this coming weekend, with both matches to be played at Clare Park in Christchurch.

NETBALL
Netballers dust of the cobwebs By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
The cobwebs have been well and truly blown out for Mid Canterbury netball sides after a massive weekend of play at the EA Networks Centre. More than a dozen sides from across the greater Canterbury region travelled to Ashburton to compete in the Inter Centre Competition on Saturday and Sunday. Two full days of intense netball to really get the veins pumping ahead of the respective local seasons. However, for many sides the weekend wasn’t as much about success as it was getting time on the courts and playing some competitive netball, and all five Mid Canterbury sides will be a lot better for the experience. Local defending champions, Hampstead, managed a 50 per cent record for the weekend with two wins from their four matches, but for Methven, Ashburton College and Celtic just the one win was forthcoming, while
United had a tough weekend. After a narrow loss to Pleasant Point on Saturday morning, Hampstead beat Rolleston in the afternoon. Then, on Sunday morning they tackled Mackenzie Old Girls and came out on the wrong side of the scoresheet, before beating fellow locals United 43-31 in the afternoon. Celtic sat out Saturday’s play, but came back into the mix on Sunday and had a good battle with the rampant Kia Toa side, where they lost 25-44. They bounced back to beat Rolleston in the afternoon, winning 40-24. The Rolleston side would have been more than happy to see the back of Mid Canterbury by Sunday night, with Mid Canterbury teams providing them with four losses over the course of the weekend. Methven started strong with a victory over Rolleston 39-31 but then suffered defeats to Pleasant Point by 17 goals, Timaru Old Boys by six and then Ohoka by 27 on Sunday afternoon.
The United girls had a tough weekend of it. They lost to Kia Toa and Lincoln University B on Saturday and then felt the full force University of Canterbury on Sunday morning, a scoreline which perhaps reflected more the gulf between Christchurch’s top sides who play in their premier competition and the rest of the region. There were some bright moments however in the 31-43 loss to fellow Mid Canterbury side Hampstead, which suggested we are in for a tight netball season locally. For the Ashburton College side, they took on two very strong teams on Saturday in Lincoln University and Kia Toa, and were on the wrong side of the scoresheet on both occasions, but then bounced back with a strong win on Sunday against Rolleston before University of Canterbury produced a demolition like performance on Sunday afternoon. Mid Canterbury’s Premier Netball season is set to begin on April 29.

SWIMMING
Ashburton makes a big splash Ashburton sure knows how to make a splash. More than 300 competitors converged on the EA Networks Centre pools on the weekend for the Ashburton Splash swim meet hosted by the Ashburton Swim Club. Competing across two full days, the meet took in swimmers from the greater Canterbury region, but also featured swimmers from clubs in Parnell, Wanaka, Hokitika and Greymouth.
Organisers were hailing it a great success with some really positive feedback coming forward about the venue and the enjoyment had by all who came into the district to compete. “It was a really good weekend, having that many people come and compete here locally was great for the club and for the sport,” Ashburton Swim Club president, Anne Tait said. Returning to the schedule after being cancelled last year due
to Covid-19 the event served for many as the last chance to get qualification times for the Division 2 Championships which are being held in Dunedin next month, and a good final hit out for a few swimmers ahead of the National Age Group Swimming Championships which begin next Monday at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre. A 24-strong squad of swimmers from the local Ashburton Swim Team competed at the event with
good results across the entire weekend, including the impressive outcome of a local swimmer picking up a personal best time in each of the three sessions of racing – justifying plenty of hard work that’s gone in over the summer season which is fast drawing to a close. Ashburton will be represented by just one swimmer, Hannah King, at the Age Group Championships next week. The 15-yearold will compete in seven events
over the championships; the 400 metre freestyle, the 200 metre breaststroke, the 400 metre individual medley, the 1500 metre freestyle, the 200 metre individual medley, the 800 metre freestyle and the 100 metre breaststroke. The championships begin on Monday and run through the course of the week. A full breakdown of results from local swimmers will appear in the Friday edition of the Guardian.

It is not often that 28 high card points between a partnership can give a Slam opportunity, but this deal from Thursday night’s club play, had the added advantage of a void in Spades for West’s hand which contributed greatly to the value for bidding purposes. Dealer, South, will pass and whether West opens a Diamond or a Club, North may overcall one of his majors, probably Spades, East will respond with 2 Clubs, West immediately recognises the potential of this hand and will cue bid asking East for Aces. Upon learning that East has 1 Ace, West bids straight to 6 Clubs, needing 12 tricks. As the cards lie East/West will make 7 Clubs, 13 tricks, which gives them an overtrick. There is no defence available for North/ South to defeat the contract, they just have to hope that Declarer will make a mistake!!
Ashburton Golf Club
The weather ended up being quite nice last Saturday and a big field look to the Brandon course for the second qualifying round in the club champs. With the rain early on, many of our usual morning players took the punt to play afternoon golf. It was lovely to see these shy and retiring golfers, that we had heard a lot about, but never actually played alongside. It turns out that they are quite nice, and a few of them are very good at buying beer. The top score of the day though was from a player who stuck to his guns and battled through the early rain and posted a very good net 67. Well done Jamie Stone, great score. Just behind Jamie on 68 were Neil Macdonald and Tim Newton and then one more shot back we had Tom Blacklow. Last Saturday’s round was also the first round of this year’s RMF Silva Cup. This will be in its 6th year now I believe. It is a wonderful competition, that everyone is automatically entered in. You just get points for turning up and playing on a Saturday. Obviously the better you play, the more points you get. We have 18 rounds this year right through the winter, ending with the final in November where the winner will pick up a club sub for next year thanks to the great gang at RMF Silva. For more information on this competition and dates of rounds, take a look on the website. This Saturday we have a stableford round off the white tees, this will also be an RMF Silva counter, so we hope to get another big field. On Sunday we have pennants on the go again. Shane and the boys kick off in the Alexander grade with a game against Mayfield at Tinwald. Great things are expected of these boys this year. A bit like the Warriors in the NRL, a great team on paper, they always set their expectations very low, and still fail to achieve them. In the Patterson grade, after two good opening wins, players have been coming out of the woodwork trying to get a game. In the top team captain Paddy has stood down and form player Tim did not make the cut. First mate Gaby will now

lead the boys and as they are playing Geraldine at their own course, two aggressive big hitters, Vincey and Fecho have been drafted in. Ashburton reserves are playing Tinwald, I have not heard how Tom is going, piecing a team together, hopefully the boys are all allowed out to play and haven’t been grounded as nothing short of a convincing win will be tolerated. Results and stories next week. Till then good golfing.

Cavendish Club
On Friday February 29, 29 members of the club met at The Phat Duck for the opening lunch of 2021. Betty Roberts (life member and patron), Jennifer Hunt and June Thomas (also life members) joined us. Jennifer Hunt was acknowledged for her 50 years’ service to the club. Jennifer has been a valued member and her friendship enjoyed by all. There was a lot of chatter and excitement to have the club opened for the year, especially after the disrupted 2020 year. Everyone enjoyed their meal and are looking forward to the new programme for 2021. Arts and crafts Circle: On March 12, it was our pleasure to have Clarrie Brake as our guest speaker, Clarrie gave some interesting history of the fabulous pieces of woodwork he has created. His pieces included a wine table, a chair beautifully carved and several bowls. All his items were pieces of perfection. We were most appreciative of Clarrie sharing his hobby and his lovely presentation. Drama Circle: On March 19, the Drama Circle entertained members with poems and short articles inspired by the New Zealand Rural Women’s Book “Ragwort and Thistles”, the drama circle read the poems and short articles the ladies had written for a competition. All the poems reflected life in the rural area, they were celebrating their lives. Many of our members could relate to the stories told. They provided much discussion amongst
Audrey Bruce and Ann Truman life members, cut the 60th anniversary cake to celebrate 60 years of existence of the Tinwald Garden Club. the members following the readings. The afternoon was enjoyed by all.
Netherby Women’s Institute
24 ladies assembled at the Seniors Centre for the April meeting of the Netherby W.I. Aspirations were recited together. Motto for the month “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless was read by Denise Clark. Happy birthday was sung to one member. Roll Call was biscuits for 206 where a good variety was handed in. The movie group enjoyed their first outing and are looking forward to the next movie. Raffle: New World and Countdown kindly donated prizes for the raffle and they were won by Nancy Christey and Diane Bradley. We still have prizes from Countdown to use for further meetings. Once again the competitions were well supported especially in the Flower section with the Moylan Trophy being won by Barbara Burst and the Northchurch by Nancy Christey. At the conclusion of the meeting a quiz was held with the questions based around recent news and some historical ones. Participates had to circles one of 3 answers given. 10 questions were given at a time with a total of 30 in all. It was purely a fun quiz with no winners or losers! These were duly marked and it was surprising that some found hard to answer. Example – spelling of Mississippi, Who wrote Gone with the Wind and what was Jacinda Ardern’s nickname at Morrinsville Intermediate school? Of course the answers were Mississippi and Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone with the Wind – most thinking it was Jane Austen – and Aunty Jack for the last one. They all got a chocolate bar or 2 for their effort. At least they all knew that Dame Patsy Reddy was the Patron of the W.I. Afternoon tea completed the afternoon with our next meeting being lunch at Speights for Mother’s Day.
Tinwald Garden Club
Thursday March 25th 43 members of the Tinwald Garden Club met in the supper room of the Tinwald Hall to celebrate 60 years of existence. With Covid last year we had to postpone this event until this year. The meeting being held in the original venue. Kathleen read the first minutes and the first committee meeting held on March 24, 1960. The meetings were to be held on the third Thursday of the month and they are still held to this day then. Subscriptions were to be five shillings. Mrs Elizabeth Young was the first President, and she was our Patron until she passed away in 2019. Karen her daughter in law is a continually active member today. Alison Scammell, dressed as she would for that time 60 years ago, shared with us some of the history of the club and things of interest. The original name was to be “Tinwald Districts Garden Club”. For afternoon tea members were to bring their own cup and saucer. President, secretary, and speaker of the day were to have their afternoon tea at a special table and served from a special silver salver. Guest speakers were given two handkerchiefs as a thank you. Flower and vegetable competitions and flower arrangements were a very important part of the meetings. It was interesting listening to Alison. The meeting then retired to the supper room where the two Life Members – Ann Truman and Audrey Bruce – cut the 60th Birthday Cake and then members were served tea or coffee and a lovely selection of sandwiches and sweet cakes on beautiful china crockery. Everyone really enjoyed their afternoon and congratulated the committee on the effort they had put into this special occasion.
The Branch meeting was held in the Tinwald Hall on 6th April 2021. President Pat O’Brien welcomed members and all said the Red Cross Principles. The Guest Speaker Sarah Clifford was welcomed to the meeting, and she gave a very interesting and insightful talk on the Citizen’s Advice Bureau now established in Ashburton and based at Community House. Anyone can access the CAB where they can get help with information on a wide range of issues. Quote from the pamphlet “Not sure? Ask us “. “ You can ask us anything “. Sarah was thanked by Margaret Blair and given some home baking. The meeting followed with members standing in silence in respect of a member’s mother who had passed away and also a NZRC Counsellor of Honour. Minutes were read and correspondence received which are mainly by email, now. Audrey Bruce gave the Financial Report. Members were thanked for their efforts with the Branch Raffle and with the NZRC Annual Appeal both raising valuable funds for New Zealand Red Cross –Where the Greatest Need is. Discussion was held on the Programme for the year requiring some adjustments. Three members attended a Red Cross event held in Christchurch for the 10th Anniversary of the Christchurch Earthquake. The raffle was drawn and the items on the Sales table were quickly taken and the meeting concluded with afternoon tea, bringing another fruitful meeting to a close.
Wakanui WI
Vice President Dianne Carter welcomed members to the March meeting of Wakanui WI. Motto – Seek respect not attention as it lasts longer. Roll Call for March was baking for Cancer Support and members were thanked for the generous donations of biscuits, cakes and muffins. The display of your favourite recipe book included good all-rounders like the Edmonds Cookbook and several modern New Zealand cooks like Nadia Lim and Annabel Langbein. Correspondence included information on Federation Cup Day competitions and members were asked to consider making some of the entries. Kay Herbert gave an interesting report on the Federation AGM where members were wearing dress for in the pre-1940 era so pearls, gloves, furs and hats were the order of the day. NZ National President, Mrs Fay Leonard and Vice-President Mrs Jude Vaughan gave a descriptive report on the Centennial Weekend in Napier where visits were made to the area where WI was founded and culminated in the unveiling of a statue of founder, Miss Jerome Spencer. Wakanui WI again won the Begg Trophy for most points in the competitions and also for the best programme. Federation Cup Day on 23rd July in the Senior Centre will include a parade of wedding gowns (for those that still fit) and display of others. Members were reminded that knitting for newborn babies was required for the Ashburton Maternity Ward. Speaker for the afternoon was Rosemary Moore one of our members who is a volunteer for the Mid-Canterbury Citizens Advice Bureau. Half-time huddle The Celtic girls get a few words of wisdom from their coaching staff at half-time in their game against High School Old Boys on Saturday. While showing promise on occasions during the match, the Celtic girls were eventually no match for the classy HSOB side. This weekend they take on the Lincoln Ewes, at Lincoln.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Today is about comfortably and casually getting to know the people who could change your life a few months down the line. This introductory process is best taken slow. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): It will be important to acknowledge the social system, which includes hierarchies of status. Pretending that the status scaffolding doesn’t exist will only breed later resentments. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): It’s said that you can’t judge a book by its cover, but there’s an entire industry that suggests the opposite. Just don’t judge a book by its movie. These thoughts will be useful metaphorically, not literally. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’re willing to make a sacrifice in the call of duty. It helps if there’s love involved. Dutiful sacrifices are admirable and take character. Sacrifices for love are both, doused in the sweetness of life. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Force breeds resistance. This is why it’s important you do not try to force yourself to do anything you don’t want to do. Persuasion is better. Seduction is the best. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It takes time to formulate a solid opinion on something. You’ll be asked to take sides or make a decision. It’s too soon, and you don’t have enough information yet. Stall. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Long relationships are a compilation – a string of daily decisions, many of which are so small you hardly notice you’re making them. Notice today, though, because the small things will matter. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): There’s true love and there’s easy love, and they don’t always show up together. You will feel that the love you had to work for rings with deeper resonance because of (not despite) your fight for it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Take authority you’re given and wear it regally. It doesn’t mean you think you’re superior. It’s just a role – though a necessary one. Someone has to play it, and you’ll do it well. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Love yields gratitude. You feel lucky to know and love the people in your life and receive their affection. Something as simple as a quick conversation counts as a celebration of the relationship. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You can’t influence people you don’t know. Your time will be well-spent in a pleasant effort to get to know people. Other people’s problems will be opportunities for you. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’ll take a step toward mastery. You’ll clear the obstacle that has been getting in the way of giving daily attention to the thing you want to be so good at.

Mid Canterbury bowlers just keep on producing the results. At the weekend, Allenton’s Sandra Keith and Rachel Davies showed that country bowls can be just as powerful as those from the town when they won the Cham-
pion of Champions Pairs title at Bowls Canterbury’s Finals Weekend at the Belfast Bowling Club. The local duo won their way into the knockout stage of the competition earlier in the season and delivered two telling performances to firstly win their semi-final on Saturday before returning on Sunday to claim the title. And the win came with some special results too.
It gave Keith her 12th Bowls Canterbury title and gave Davies her fifth, earning her a Gold Star in the process. On Saturday, the pair made light work of their semi-final clash against Redcliffs Mt Pleasant, romping to victory with a 22-7 scoreline. That set up a return trip to Christchurch on Sunday to face Beckenham in the final of the Women’s Pairs, and again the Allenton two were on fire.
After a strong start they led 10-8 through seven ends, but the Beckenham pair fought back over the next three ends to grab the lead 10-14. That kicked Keith and Davies into gear though, and they went on a nine-shot scoring run over the next three ends to really pile the pressure on. That lead proved to be insurmountable, and the pair claimed the title with a 24-19 victory at the end of the 18th end.
