Local facilities praised by former Ferns By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

One of the country’s top netball coaches has praised the facilities in Ashburton during a national development camp this week. Netball New Zealand has brought the first of its three development camps to Mid Canterbury where 25 up-and-comers from the South Island are receiving expert training from some of the best in the business. The coaching team is headed up by former Silver Fern and current New Zealand Secondary Schools coach Te Aroha Keenan and assistant Pelesa Semu (Central Pulse/New Zealand Secondary Schools). Other illustrious names lending a hand this week on the coaching staff include former

Ferns’ stars Irene van Dyk and Anna Galvan. The Mid Canterbury town held fond memories for Keenan. “I’ve loved Ashburton,” she said. “I was a schoolgirl coach and we won two New Zealand Secondary Schools’ titles down here with Mount Albert Grammar. “It’s a lovely facility (EA Networks Centre) and a lovely place. “It’s a perfect place for this kind of camp.” A total of 85 players from around the country are being schooled in the programme which has been split into three factions. Two further camps will be held in Auckand and Palmerston North in which players would be considered for New Zealand Secondary Schools’ se-

lection. “It’s an introduction to them into the high performance pathway for netball,” Keenan said. “Some of these girls haven’t been introduced to high performance or anything like that before so it’s an opportunity for us to share with them the needs if you’re looking to be a Silver Fern or looking to play for New Zealand at an age group level.” NetballSmart officers have also been on deck during the camp observing how players were training. The ACC-led injury prevention programme is receiving a $3.6 million funding boost over the next three years following an announcement in November. Another ex-Silver Fern, Jodi Brown, who now works as an educator at Drug Free Sport New Zealand, also provided a

talk to squad members during the camp’s opening day on Wednesday. “Hopefully they’ll go away from this camp and will have some information as to what they need to do to go further and that’s the great thing,” Keenan said. The prolific coach urged local netballers who were eager to make the step up to be proactive. “It’s you against you,” she said. “You can do the work, there’s a lot of stuff online, you listen to your coaches, you apply yourself. “It’s not just in the trainings the coaches do, it’s the stuff you do away from the coaches and if you’re committed to improving your skills then you just need to apply yourself. “The rest takes care of itself.”

Family farm comes full circle

F

our generations have farmed on John Totty’s 465-hectare property at Staveley, with Jersey cows featuring prominently throughout the years. The Staveley Jerseys stud was founded by John’s grandfather, a passionate Jersey breeder, in the early 1960s. Back then the farm milked 150 cows and ran dairy replacements, sheep, beef, and crop. When John’s parents took over the business the farm was expanded, purchasing a neighbouring property in 1995 which was converted the following year. A Friesian herd was purchased and for 20 years the property supported a 750-cow herd while continuing to run young stock. In 2015 John purchased the dry-land farm, which today milks 1000 cows across two sheds with young stock grazed off-farm. Seven years ago, the farm was 50:50 Jersey and Friesian genetics, today the farm is about 70 per cent Jersey genetics and breeding back towards a full Jersey herd. John says the transition to Jerseys has been an easy decision. “Every season we have increased the Jersey content of the herd and managed to hold or increase per cow production without any farm system changes. This season we have increased production by 15 per cent while only increasing cow numbers by 10 per cent.” John says the ultimate goal is to achieve efficient, profitable production. “We are aiming to get to the point where we produce a kilogram of milksolids for every kilogram of liveweight, while keeping farm working expenses under $4. “Seven years ago, with a 50 per cent Friesian herd, we were doing 265,000 kilograms of milksolids, now we are achieving 385,000 kilograms of milksolids with a predominantly Jersey herd, at a lower cost. As a bonus, our Fonterra cheque is always ahead of the company average too.” The flexibility of Jerseys was reinforced in John’s first year on the farm when a severe drought forced the herd on to once-a-day (OAD) in December. “The Jerseys powered through, but the Friesians sulked and had to go back on twice a day when the drought broke to get their appetites up.

Staveley farmer, John Totty. “Jerseys will hold production through tough times, and recover a lot quicker in autumn.” Up until this season the farm had previously split the herds by breed, but this year, for the first time, the herds have been split by BW.

sires followed by four weeks of Jersey bulls and two weeks of short gestation dairy. Whereas the jersey bulls go straight out with the lower BW herd meaning we are only doing AB through one shed.” John says the flexibility of the

We are aiming to get to the point where we produce a kilogram of milksolids for every kilogram of liveweight, while keeping farm working expenses under $4. “Mixed herds didn’t work well with big Friesians. Over time we have achieved more consistency in size through the use of jersey artificial breeding (AB) sires and the sale or culling of higher Friesian content animals, and that has enabled us to split herds by BW instead. “It has really simplified the operation. The top herd is mated to AB for six weeks using Jersey

Jersey breed also includes the adaptability to variable milking intervals. “One of our business goals was to move to a 10-in-7 system – that is 10 milkings in 7 days, a variation of 16-hour milkings, but with more convenient milking times for staff. This season is our first employing the 10-in-7 system full season. “Jerseys have around a 30-hour

holding capacity versus a Friesian at around 20-hours, and this is a big advantage when using variable milking intervals.” In John’s business, the Jersey advantage extends beyond just efficiency and profitability to management traits like calving ease, animal health, and mastitis. “Jerseys have tremendous calving ease – we averaged one assisted calving per week this season. We also have very few down cows, and often they are our older F16 girls that are more prone to metabolic issues. “This season we had just four cases of clinical mastitis in August and thirty cases total over calving. Our somatic cell count is currently sitting around 100,000. “All of these factors contribute to reduced animal health costs, reduced labour costs, and more manageable hours for staff.” Jerseys have also been key to cash flow in the business, with a ready market in the South Island for surplus stock. “There is a good market for Jersey bulls with everyone using them over their heifers due to the superior calving ease. We also sell our young empty cows as

carryovers, as well as our lower production worth (PW) animals, bringing through higher breeding worth (BW) replacements that better meet our herd goals. “We’ve even had instances where people have come to look at our surplus Friesian or crossbred stock and ended up buying our surplus Jerseys because of their breeding worth, type and proven efficiency.” The Jersey cow is also gaining a growing reputation for its lower environmental footprint. In the South Island where wintering practices have come under the spotlight, a lighter cow could be beneficial. “In our business the environmental picture is becoming more and more important, particularly around pugging and winter grazing.” “We always try to have an eye to the future and a lighter cow that has less impact on the soil structure could be critical going forward.” It’s that foresight that has seen the business go from strength to strength and build on the foundations set over the past four generations.

NZSO to break new ground in town By Malcolm Hopwood The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is coming to Ashburton for probably the first time. While Ashburton Trust Event Centre Manager, Roger Farr, hasn’t checked every venue since the orchestra was established in the late 1940s, he’s confident it’s never visited Mid Canterbury before. The NZSO plus actors and dancers from the Royal New Zealand Ballet will present Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale at the Event Centre on March 7 at 2pm. Roger Farr is delighted. “It’s a first for Ashburton and a chance to hear New Zealand’s finest orchestra without having to travel out of town,” he says. “If we get a great response from Mid Canterbury people, I’m sure the NZSO will consider coming again.” Roger will take the opportunity to talk to the orchestra’s management while they’re here about establishing an ongoing relationship so the NZSO can return. “We have a venue which has the capacity to house 120 musicians on stage so we can cater for an orchestra the size of the NZSO,” he says. The Soldier’s Tale is described as a “pocket-sized theatre piece” written by Stravinsky in 1918 “to be read, played and danced.” It tells the story of a soldier who makes a deal with the devil. In exchange for the soldier’s magic violin, the devil will grant his every wish.

and the paso doble. The orchestral members will be conducted by Hamish

Like having a party, on stage By Malcolm Hopwood Ellie Lawn is serious about turning her hobby into her career. Ellie took part in last week’s Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School and, at the end of the showcase concert, was awarded one of two scholarships. “I was surprised, delighted and overwhelmed and it made me realise that music could be a career option,” she said. Ellie (17) and, in her final year at Ashburton College, has attended the summer school for seven years. The buzz is taking part and being a member of the ensemble singing. Each of the 100 participants receive their music in December and were required by director, Jo Castelow and choreographer, Julia Bell, to be familiar with the repertoire by the time they came together in January. This year Ellie’s challenge was to learn a montage of songs from

Beauty And the Beast, Spring Awakening, the movie, Moulin Rouge, a new show based on the life of Harriet Tubman and popular music from such mega composers as Elton John. “I love how ensemble singing sounds and I’m comfortable singing the alto or second soprano parts,” Ellie says. “It’s good to be versatile.” Ellie loved performing alongside other experienced young people from throughout Canterbury, all dedicated to performance. “The first two days we rehearsed the music with Jo, then Julia choreographed the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. On the third and fourth days we rehearsed on the Event Centre stage, both music and movement,” she says. The final day focused on a dress and technical rehearsal and then the show, entitled Moving Towards the Future, at night.

“I felt nervous but it went pretty well. I was excited. It was like having a party on stage but with everyone watching,” Ellie commented. “It was really fun to sing with the other performers using lots of energy.” But most of all Ellie knew she was learning. “Every time I do a show I get more confident,” she explains. At the end of the showcase performance, she was awarded a monetary scholarship to further her singing and performance. “I guess I got it because of my versatility and reliability,” Ellie explains but both Jo and Julia saw something more in her talent. This year she’s going to concentrate on both individual and ensemble singing and study for her Grade 8 Trinity College exam. Ellie is keeping her options open when she leaves college but furthering her musical talent is close to the top of the list.

Groundwater drives coastal erosion By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

International scientists have put the Ashburton coastline under the microscope and found that groundwater flow and seepage can form large gullies along coastal cliffs in a matter of days, according to a recently-published paper. An international team of scientists from Malta, Germany, Romania, New Zealand and USA has used drones and satellite imagery to monitor a stretch of coastline south-east of Ashburton. They found that gullies up to 30m in length can develop in less than a week. Field observations and numerical models have shown that groundwater plays a key role in forming these gullies, by either eroding tunnels or triggering landslides. There is an average of one gully every 250m along the Canterbury coastline, and their formation leads to the loss of precious agricultural land. Similar coastal gullies have been documented in South Taranaki, as well as other countries such as the USA, Japan, and Brazil. When and where coastal gullies form can be partly predicted. The study has shown that gullies form when more than 40mm of rain falls per day, and that they are preferentially located above buried, old river channels. The study was led by Professor Aaron Micallef from the University of Malta’s Department of Geosciences, and is an outcome of the MARCAN project, which is funded by the European Research Council.

It extends up to 60 kilometres from the coastline and may be as large as two hundred cubic kilometres of water, which is equivalent to half the volume of groundwater across Canterbury. In 2020 the scientists announced they had discovered an extensive body of freshwater beyond the Canterbury coast of New Zealand and mapped its structure in 3D. The freshwater is in sediments just 20 metres below the seafloor, making it one of the shallowest in the world. It extends up to 60 kilometres from the

The freshwater system exhibits complex variations in shape and salinity across its entire extent, which made it challenging to map. The freshwater is derived from rainfall and is partly being replenished at present by groundwater flow from the coastline between Timaru and Ashburton. However, the majority of the freshwater became trapped offshore during the last three Ice Ages, when sea level was more than a hundred metres lower than it is today. The finding, and the method of discovery, was seen to be important in view of the potential use of offshore freshwater systems as a new source of drinking water, the management of coastal aquifers that extend offshore, and the role they play in the chemistry and biology of the ocean.

OUR VIEW

Trump’s speech only a week too late By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

T

o say that American politics over the past few years has been a comedy of errors might be an understatement. But one decision made in the past fortnight by the soon-to-be former president of the United States of America might have been the biggest of them all. Donald Trump’s apparent endorsement of activity inside the Capitol last week was the straw that broke the camel’s back for many of even his most ardent followers. Surprising, considering the long list of other failings and misgivings from the one-term leader in the past few years. But encouraging, or at least being seen to encourage, violence on such an important part of American history was a step too far for most, and as the days go by more and more people will raise their hand and point the finger firmly at someone who they once believed to be the messiah. It was Trump’s biggest opportunity to gain a little respect from a majority who have quite clearly had enough of him. By standing tall and admonishing protestors storming the Capitol and inciting violence on anyone who tried to stop them – he could have walked through the next two weeks with his head held a little higher. But no, firing blanks from the safety of a social media account was deemed the better course of action and ultimately it will see the final axe reverberate as he’s marched out of the White House next week. Yesterday’s decision to impeach the president for a second time should have come as no surprise. But what was shocking was that no less than an hour after the decision was reached Trump fronted the cameras and said all the things he should have said more than a week ago. That he never even mentioned the impeachment shows that he’s still got his head stuck in the clouds and over time it will become clearly evident even to someone so obnoxiously selfish just how damaging those decisions will be for him, his businesses, brand and bank accounts.

Downhill date day W

ednesday is date day for Manda and I. I must confess and take a fair chunk of the blame, that it has slipped somewhat down the romance ladder. In the past we have gone on day trips away, grabbing a bite to eat before an afternoon of mountain biking. We have gone out for lunch before catching a movie at the Regent Cinema. We even had a sports theme running for a time, including everything from snooker to archery. This Wednesday we went shopping at Mitre 10, The Warehouse and Postie Plus. Nothing against those stores, but I’m sure you’ll agree they are not high on the list of romantic hotspots Mid Canterbury has to offer. ‘Date day’ has pretty much morphed into ‘Get things done

day’. But before you relegate me to a lost cause status, we did pop into Robilliards to redeem a voucher. While there, Mark enquired how our holiday break at Rangi was. “I hope you’re going to write about it in this week’s column, you will have your loyal readers sitting on tenterhooks waiting to hear if the move across the camping ground was a success.” I must confess I was gobsmacked. Not that Mark could actually

read, but that he thought I would have some loyal readers and that they would remember the details of one of my columns (as he did) several weeks after it was used to clean the windows. Insert Hoops’ Handy Hint: Newsprint and warm water do a great job on the windows, just make sure there’s no direct sunlight at the time. So was the camping ground move a success? I turned to Manda with a hopeful look after Mark repeated the question. “Well, it was a lot dustier this year,” she said. As much as I didn’t want to, I had to nod in agreement, with a semi-defeated look, much like a schoolboy who’d just been rejected when asking a girl to dance at the disco. “But apart from that it was a

success,” she said. Boom! The girl at the disco had changed her mind and I was marching with chest puffed out towards the D Floor. I was chuffed to hear Manda say that, I thought it had worked out really well. The weather was pretty kind to us over the couple of weeks all in all. When it got really hot and I’m only talking mid 20s but because it was sheltered, the heat was accentuated, we sat under the huge macrocarpa in front of our site. When the cold easterly breezed in off the sea, we didn’t feel it as we had shelter from the hedge directly behind our site. Thank god there were no gusty nor’wests! The fishing, on the other hand, was nowhere near as successful. The only successful catches were

catch-ups with Gary Strachan who generously made sure I had a sample of whitebait, smoked eel, elephant fish and rig this season. On a positive note, at least I didn’t go driving a couple of hundred metres up the beach with my rod on the back of the bike and line still in the water. There’s always next year though. Enthusiastic consent

O

ur little family has a Sunday movie night tradition, in which we watch a movie together, every Sunday with popcorn and pizza. Our children look forward to this simple pleasure every week. As they have grown, so has the scope of our viewing choices. We have graduated from movies like How to Train Your Dragon, to the Indiana Jones movies and Marvel titles such as Iron Man. Each time they choose a film that sits outside something animated from Dreamworks, I check it on the Commonsense media website for anything age-inappropriate. Even though the movies may pass that scrutiny, they often still fall short as far as their portrayal of women, particularly the way the female and male protagonist, especially in action films, is so very different. This generates some healthy discussion as we compare, for example, the character of Indiana Jones as played by Harrison Ford and that of Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft in Tomb Raider.

By Claire Inkson PROVINCIAL PERSPECTIVE

While Lara Croft is portrayed as an intelligent woman with some enviable martial arts skills, she does so in some very provocative outfits. Indiana Jones is not sexualised in quite the same way. This disparity is shown across movie after movie and is unsurprising considering how male-dominated the film industry, and mainstream media as a whole, continues to be. This matters, because the influence of the media on how men view women, and to some extent, how women view themselves flows on to reinforce attitudes and social norms in a broader context. In 1985, cartoonist Alison Bechdel penned what has become known as the Bechdel test to measure the fair representa-

tion of women in film. To pass the test, a movie must have: 1: It must have at least two female characters 2: They must both have names 3: They must talk to each other about something other than a man. It is estimated that around 50 per cent of movies fit these criteria, and it could be argued the Bechdel test is the bare minimum when it comes to unobjectified female representation. The Harvey Weinstein case highlighted the disturbing culture of sexual harassment within Hollywood. Still, the #Metoo movement took that further, illuminating the alarming frequency of which women endure varying degrees of harassment in everyday life. Most women I know have suffered from this at some level, from the cringeworthy overly friendly boss whose advances we must deflect diplomatically without losing our jobs, to something more traumatic and sinister.

At age 9, I successfully warded off the despicable attempts of a kiss from a male 16-year-old babysitter, at 14 my school friends and I had to give evidence in court for a man who continually revealed himself to us as we walked to school. The latter we chased to en masse until a helpful taxi driver caught him and he was arrested. I remember how angry we were, and how much power there was in us simply having had enough, and joining together to stop him. Then, on a lesser, but still irritating note, a man who told me how much he “loved my articles, but it would better if your author photo were naked”. And of course, the list goes on. As Oscar Wilde once wrote “Everything in the world is about sex – except sex. Sex is about power”. Women are continually negotiating this terrain: in the workplace, in social situations, in relationships, and more recently, online. The objectification of women in media only exacerbates this.

Power is wielded in a professional, physical, financial and emotional context. What it comes down to in all of these contexts including relationships is not just consent, but as The Good Place’s Jameela Jamil describes “enthusiastic consent” – and that is what we need to teach our sons and daughters. Goodbye my love 18 Jackson Street, Methven It is time for the vendor to say goodbye to their love at first sight. This adorable character villa is now ready to cast its charming spell on a new owner. Positioned to capture the allday sun, even in winter. Four bedrooms, one bathroom, two toilets, open plan kitchen and living area offering you a comfortable and homely atmosphere. Newly installed fireplace, a heat pump, and HRV system keep the entire house snugly warm and cosy. Admiring the magnificent view of the snow-capped mountain ranges right from the front of your house. The front lawn is fully fenced, maximising your privacy in the

afternoon sun. An additional space with various purposes such as a rumpus, an office, or a teenage hideaway, the choice is yours. Possessing a traditional Kiwi quarter of an acre section, this is a bonus for the new owner of this property, as it is potentially subdividable, giving you space to play. Jackson Street is a peaceful neighbourhood and is a handy walking distance to town centre, shops, restaurants, bars, and school. No wonder why the vendor fell in love with this house instantly. Now it is your time, call us now.

he new Bentley Bentayga V8 has been recognised as the definitive luxury SUV, with the awarding of 4x4 magazine’s Luxury SUV title in their annual 4x4 of the Year awards sponsored by BFGoodrich. The important award celebrates the Bentayga’s benchmark position as the original and best luxury SUV, and comes after the car was previously heralded as the Performance SUV of the Year by the same magazine. Editor of 4x4 magazine, Alan Kidd, comments: “Until this last year, we’ve always seen the Bentayga as a performance SUV. “But its pace and dynamics have been so dominant in its character, it has been easy to overlook the luxury that’s a critical element of any Bentley. “That’s why the new Bentayga is so significant. “It remains magnificent to drive, with a masterful lightness of touch on the road – but now this is matched by an interior

whose seats, fascia and electronics have all been replaced by new items. “The improvement is emphatic. “We think the latest version of Bentley’s design language is far better suited to the Bentayga’s proportions, too. “It now has the looks to go with its athleticism. “The Bentayga may well go hand in hand with membership of several exclusive clubs. But the most exclusive of all is the club for vehicles which have triumphed in more than one class in these awards. “A former Performance SUV of the Year is now our Luxury SUV of the Year. “For one model to reach such heights in two separate categories is truly remarkable.” Consideration for the award was made during Bentley’s Toy Box event in October, which included an on- and off-road drive in new Bentaygas. Wading of up to half a metre, side slopes up to 35 degrees and challenging ascent and descent gradients were all

tackled with ease by the Bentayga’s intelligent off-road systems. The new Bentayga was the first car launched under Bentley’s Beyond100 business plan in 2020, following a first generation featuring more than 20,000 cars – more than any of its competitors. A new exterior design adopts the Bentley design DNA now prevalent across the entire model range, giving Bentley the freshest and most modern product family of any luxury car company. Combining the abilities of a perfor-

mance grand tourer, a luxury limousine, a spacious family car and an off-roader, the new Bentayga follows its predecessor’s mantle of having the broadest brief of any car on sale today. The Bentayga established the luxury SUV sector, and has been enhanced to create the ultimate in power, luxury and usability. Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Crewe, England, the new Bentayga is now on sale in all markets around the world.

The result is the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, for the first time ever with seating for six or seven. “When you set out to reimagine an SUV as beloved as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, building on its nearly 30-year legacy as an overachiever is paramount to every decision that is made,” said Christian Meunier, Global President of Jeep Brand – FCA. “With that legacy guiding the Jeep team, the new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is crafted to exceed expectations and do what no other SUV can do: deliver legendary Jeep 4x4 off-road capability blended with superior on-road manners. “It is built on an all-new architecture and wrapped in a stun-

ning new design that honours its iconic Jeep design heritage, while also extending to accommodate a third row to meet the growing needs of our Jeep customers who have asked for more space and functionality. “The Grand Cherokee L truly stands out in its segment and continues to raise the bar in capability, performance and luxury, while also breaking new ground in versatility and functionality.” The state-of-the-art 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is designed inside and out to deliver unmatched capability and composed driving dynamics. Its renowned 4x4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II), QuadraLift air suspension and Selec-Terrain traction management system instill Grand Cherokee L with the Jeep brand’s legendary 4x4 capability. An all-new architecture and sculpted aerodynamic body style combine to improve vehicle performance, safety and reliability, while significantly reducing vehicle weight, noise, vibration and harshness. Designed to maximise overall passenger safety, comfort and convenience, Grand Cherokee L packs a powerful punch with

next-generation features and technologies that make it a stand-out in the full-size SUV segment. The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L will be available in four different trim configurations – Laredo, Limited, Overland and Summit. The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L delivers improved unrivalled capability along with composed on-road driving dynamics. Legendary off-road capability begins courtesy of three 4x4 systems – Quadra-Trac I, QuadraTrac II and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited slip-differential (eLSD). The 2021 Grand Cherokee L’s class-leading Selec-Terrain traction management system lets customers choose the on- and off-road setting for optimum 4x4 performance. This feature electronically co-ordinates up to six different powertrains, 4x4 torque split, braking and handling, steering and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case and traction control, stability control, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and steering feel. The Selec-Terrain system offers five available terrain modes (Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow,

Mud/Sand) to provide optimised calibrations for any given driving scenario. The Grand Cherokee L is composed of more than 60 per cent advanced high-strength steel to aid in ductility, usability and energy absorption. The all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers buyers a choice of two powerful, fuel-efficient and refined engines with proven performance for any driving situation. Standard is the all-aluminium 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6 engine, rated at 290 horsepower and 257 lb.-ft. of torque. Lauded for its power and refinement, the 60-degree angle between the Pentastar V-6’s cylinder banks make it inherently smooth running, augmented by accessories that bolt directly to the engine block. A seven-time winner of the Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems award, the Pentastar V-6 engine is compact, with features such as exhaust manifolds integrated into the cylinder heads. Buyers who want more power can opt for the award-winning 5.7-litre V8, rated at 357 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque delivered over a broad power band.

or the first time in eight years Isuzu’s durable D-Max has undergone a full model change. There are fifteen variants available. The workhorse LX, costing from $49,990 comes in three body types (single, space, and double cab) with options of either 6-speed manual or auto, 2WD or 4WD. They all have a comprehensive suite of active safety technology (including adaptive cruise control for the automatic models) 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, auto lights and wipers. The double cab LS-M adds LED head and daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels and more luxurious interior trim. Meanwhile the LS has a 9-inch touchscreen with sat-nav, dual-zone climate air,

rear parking sensors, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Top of the range is the even higher spec $75,490 double cab, 4WD, auto X-Terrain, shown here in Valencia Orange Metallic, which accentuates its wheel-arch extensions and the gun-metal highlights for the wheels, grille, roof rails and sports bar as well as a matte black roller tonneau cover for its now larger, deeper tray. It also comes with a classy, nicely-presented and finished cabin complete with very comfortable over longer distance, leather seating. While the driver’s seat is power operated, there’s no seat-heaters. There is air-con outlets and a USB point for those in the rear seats. The dash including the large customisable infotainment screen and other controls both look smart and are likewise to touch and use. As well there’s a smart proximity key with remote engine start and front/rear parking sensors. All models have the latest enhanced version of Isuzu’s well-proven 3-litre diesel turbo engine. With new internals, a more efficient turbo and high-pressure, direct injection fuel system, this engine produces 10kW more power (140kW) and now a maximum 450Nm of torque which is available from 1600rpm to 2600rpm. Immediately noticeable was just how quiet and lively this engine is, along with the slick changes of the six-speed auto, both of which result in keen acceleration as and when needed (0-100kmh in just under 10 seconds) and then a relaxed, pleasurably quiet open road cruise. In both driving situations the supple ride provided by the longer wheelbase and new suspension setup – double wishbones, larger anti-roll bars and control

arms at the front – three leaf system with 30mm increase in suspension travel at the rear also impressed, as did the way it turned into and flowed through even tighter corners. But, as indicated above, this is not at the expense of the ability to handle the toughest terrain. There’s more ground clearance than before, a rear axle diff-lock as standard on all 4x4 models, an extra 200mm wading depth (now 800mm) and hill-start assist. The ground clearance is 240mm while approach, departure and ramp-over angles are 30.5, 24.2 and 23.8 degrees respectively. All of the above which, in concert with the engine’s broad spread of torque, ensures these new 4x4 models have, as was demonstrated on the Guild family’s High Peak Station, even more off-road capability than their predecessors. Both on or off-road there’s the always reassuring factor that all the new D-Max come with a comprehensive suite of

active safety features. This includes autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, a lane support system (autos only), lane departure warning, blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert. These are in addition to the eight airbags, one of which is placed between the front seats and offers further protection in the case of side impacts.

FINALE There’s now a whole lot more to D-Max utes, and particularly so with this X-Terrain! For whilst it still has a heavy-duty chassis and retains its toughness, off-road ability and durability, with all its new active safety, more powerful and efficient turbo-diesel engine, upmarket technology/equipment and cabin comfort it is ruggedly refined. And ready for any adventure, whether it’s a family roadie, towing heavy stuff or heading deep into back country!

Devine warms up with record-breaking knock Sophie Devine has celebrated good news for the New Zealand women’s cricket team with a history-making performance. The White Ferns captain thumped a century from just 36 balls to lead Wellington to a 10-wicket win over Otago in their domestic T20 match in Dunedin yesterday. Devine, who was playing her first game in almost eight weeks and only left managed isolation on Sunday, having returned from the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia, finished with 108 not out from 38 balls. The sublime batting display saw the defending champion Blaze reach their

target of 129 in only the ninth over. The innings was the fastest century in New Zealand domestic T20 history, beating the 40-ball century hit by Black Caps opener Tim Seifert for Northern Districts in 2017. It was also two balls faster than the record for the fastest century in women’s T20 internationals, which was 38 by Deandra Dottin of the West Indies in 2010. The stunning display came as New Zealand Cricket confirmed both the England and Australian women’s teams would be touring New Zealand before the end of the summer. After finally gaining the necessary government support, NZC confirmed

M7 Blenheim harness

both teams will be making a visit for three T20s and three ODIs. The England side will arrive in New Zealand on Saturday, January 26 and undergo the mandatory 14-day managed isolation period ahead of a nine-day training camp, which will include two warm-up games, in Queenstown. Their ODI series against the White Ferns will start on February 23, with the three T20s to follow from March 3. England are the reigning ODI world champions after winning the World Cup at Lord’s in 2017, while Australia women hold the mantle as T20 world champions after claiming that title in Melbourne last year.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Because you listen and try to understand the other person’s point of view, arguments can bring you closer together. The relationship gets better because you know each other better. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You love security as much as anyone, and yet, today, you’re feeling restless and bold enough to give some of that up for a thrill, some solid entertainment or a chance at the big prize. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ve been slowly getting to know someone for a while. Yet, when you think about this person, there are more questions than answers. It’s a good place to be. Curiosity is what the relationship needs. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): While you may be having a deep experience of joy, there is part of you that cannot fully accept and revel in this unless you know that another person is in it with you. Is it too early to reveal your feelings? LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ve been known to be overcome by fits of fatalism, though you’re stronger now. You may still have that thought, every once in a while, that things won’t go your way again. But you’ll battle the idea and win. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The proverb suggests, “Pride goeth before a fall.” You can avoid the fall by checking the pride. Carefully estimate the elements and humbly assess your ability to navigate them. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Caring too much, doing too much and giving too much knocks you off your game. Balance is always a stronger position. Whatever you can do to move toward balance will be a move toward strength. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): A loving person is attuned to your feelings and responsive to your needs. That’s the baseline for what to expect from your inner circle. If that line is not being toed, then it’s either address it or move on from. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): There is no such thing as a “casual invitation” today. Oh, the opportunity may be delivered with nonchalance, but you can be certain that it’s as significant as anything altering the course of destiny. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): This pile of work in front of you isn’t pretty right now and won’t be later either. Its best look is “gone.” Start with what interests you, and you’ll gain the energy necessary to tackle what doesn’t. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Most traps are invisible and yet they hold as powerfully as physical constraints. No one likes to feel trapped. Is this really the case? What happens when you break free? PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You don’t give yourself enough credit. If you’re not going to do it for you, do it for the ones who need you. Because, believe it or not, you’re the model that someone else is following closely.

READY, SET, GO! By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A strong group of youngsters from Ashburton are set to be unleashed today at the country’s biggest junior athletics event. A total of 20 competitors aged between 8 and 13 from the Ashburton Athletics Club line up at the 43rd Colgate Games which begins this morning in Nelson. The club will be represented across shot put, discus, long jump, high jump and numerous running and walking events.

Half a dozen relay teams are also set to be competing. Several of the Ashburton contingent got some opportune preparation under their belt last weekend at the Lovelock Classic in Timaru. There were five first place finishes for the club at Saturday’s meet. Rishaa Kumar came first in the 100m 12 boys’ event in a time of 13.71 seconds. Timote Makaui secured twin wins in the 9 boys’ 60m and shot put events. Toby Grant and Brooke Ed-

monds were also successful, winning the 12 boys’ shot put and 8 girls’ long jump events respectively. About 900 athletes from 71 different clubs will converge on the Saxton Field Sports Complex for three days of track and field competition. PROGRAMME
