St John staff are, by definition, a level-headed bunch, and it takes a bit to leave them speechless, but that happened when three Year 8 students from Ashburton Intermediate and school principal Brent Gray called into the depot on Monday.

St John staff knew the youngsters were coming to drop off a donation raised at their school market day, but when the $7000 total was revealed jaws hit the floor. Elaine Vallender, area executive officer for St John Mid Canterbury said it was an amazing effort and the money will really help. Market day is held every two years, and as part of the com-

munity advertising each class is tasked with creating a poster to go up around town. The winning class get to choose the charity we donate to, Gray said. “This year’s poster was a two-class effort as the top of one poster worked really well with the bottom of another, so the students got together and chose St John.” The market day was certainly a hit with 500 plus parents and

members of the public attending as well as the 400 students who were let out of class to take part for an hour or so. Money donated to the local St John stays in the area and Vallender said the money will go towards supporting St John activities in the community. “We are thrilled that the students chose St John and thank them all for their efforts,” she said.

Children’s Day better than ever By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

It’s been missing in action for a year, but Children’s Day will be back on the Ashburton District’s event calendar in March, bigger and better than ever. Covid-19 and the long road to achieving charitable status, put the hugely popular day on hold this year, but thanks to a helping hand from Ashburton Rotary, Children’s Day is back and its organising committee is now planning and fundraising to ensure next year’s event is another winner. The 2019 event attracted more than 4000 people, proving it had cemented its place on the district’s event calendar. However, the long process involved in acquiring charitable status for the event meant this year’s was put on hold, treasurer Graeme Moodie said. The Moodie family are Children’s Day stalwarts, with Adrienne having been on the organising committee since the event was born. Daughter Alice Czerski is now part of the team and husband Graeme has taken on the treasurer’s role. The event was first held about 12 years ago when a group of Mid Canterbury social workers wanted to create a fun event for their young clients. From small beginnings it has grown to attract thousands of families each year to enjoy the rare treat of a day out where rides and activities are free of charge. Children’s Day doesn’t happen by accident, however, and for the volunteers there are many hours of work and planning involved, Moodie said. Until the organisation obtained charitable status, fundraising was always a challenge, but now with the help of Ashburton Rotary members, that box has been ticked and with that doors for community grants have opened.

“Rotary came to us and said how would you like us to raise all the money for you – we couldn’t say no because this is a free day for children,” he said.

It’s an event with largely no income, just outgoings in terms of paying for big ticket rides and events. Those outgoings top $14,000

each year and the only money raised comes through on-site barbecues manned by Rotarians. Ensuring parking is orderly is undertaken by Plains Rotary

members. “Rotary’s been a huge help to us, but we do always need more people to come on board as volunteers,” Moodie said. Next year’s event will be held on March 7 and will run from 10am to 2pm in Tinwald’s Plains Museum grounds. The Tinwald swimming pool is traditionally open for the event and the Plains Museum’s trains and miniature model trains run on the day. The day is designed as a picnic event for families. “We’ve got a lot going on and it’s all free for the kids, but we do ask that families come prepared with a bit of a picnic set-up to really enjoy the day.”

Opening New Zealand’s borders to Australia won’t be an immediate golden bullet for the tourism sector, says Mid Canterbury’s tourism boss Bruce Moffat. The driver and passengers then left immediately for a vacation with injuries.” “The pedestrian ran for the pavement, but I got him.” “I saw her look at me twice. Slap ‘a case of mistaken identity’ A 37-year-old woman has been ordered to pay reparations following an altercation at the Methven Rodeo back in October. Mylee Krystal Watene pleaded guilty to a charge of common assault in the Ashburton District Court on Monday. The court heard from the defendant’s lawyer that it was a case of “mistaken identity” which the defendant had accepted when referring to the incident on October 25. Earlier that particular day, it is alleged a man in the crowd fell on the defendant and touched her inappropriately, the court heard. Later in the day, the woman allegedly approached an individual who she believed to have been the man in question where she slapped him across the left cheek in retaliation. It is alleged she then said “now we’re even”. Although there were no injuries, Judge Dominic Dravitzki advised the defendant should not have behaved in such a way. Ms Watene was ordered to pay $250 emotional harm reparations to the victim.

Guilty plea to contravening a protection order Others to appear in front of Judge Dominic Dravitzki at the Ashburton District Court were: George Gage Rangihuna pleaded guilty to a charge of contravening a protection order. It is alleged the 45-year-old man engaged in abuse of a protected person on October 15. The man was remanded for sentencing on February 15. Jamal Leon Pera appeared on a charge of driving with a breath alcohol level over 400mcg. It is alleged the 35-year-old dairy farm manager was pulled over on Chertsey Road on June 20 where he blew 465mcg of alcohol per litre of breath. Pera was fined $400 and ordered to pay $130 court costs and disqualified from driving for 28 days. Natasha Christine Ranson faced a fourth charge of driving while disqualified. The court heard the 29-year-old drove a

Hot weather prompts fire restrictions A restricted fire season has been declared for all of Canterbury ahead of scorching weather predicted for later this week. The Ashburton District and the rest of Canterbury is moving to a restricted fire season effective from midnight on Wednesday. This means a permit may be required to light a fire outside, and those with a permit need to follow its conditions. “There are a few 30 degree days forecast for Canterbury later this week,” Fire and Emergency NZ region manager Paul Henderson said. “This heat, combined with the dry and windy conditions, increase the fire danger and risk of a wildfire.” “People need to take the fire risk seriously. “In these conditions a firework, or spark from machinery, could easily start a wildfire which would get quickly out of control.” Canterbury Weather Updates analyst, Russell Voice said Canterbury is “moving into a golden period of weather, with little, or no rain forecast for the remainder of December for the Canterbury Plains”.

Good sense ultimate summer safety measure By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

ummer is well and truly upon us. It’s set to be hot and dry and that brings with it fire restrictions. It is something that has become part and parcel of the Kiwi summer. Clear skies and warm temperatures are what we want in summer. Unfortunately, it comes with inherent risk. What stuck out for me in the announcement of the fire restrictions coming in in Canterbury was the fact authorities had to remind the public that lighting fireworks at this time of year is dangerous. It opens up the old can of worms around public access to fireworks, but it’s a dilemma that needs to be solved. Legislation has restricted when and where fireworks are sold and to whom, in terms of age, but it cannot yet successfully control when and where the public use them. I’m all for the public displays, letting fireworks off in controlled environments. It is the uncontrolled events that cause concern. Private use is fine by me if it is done in a safe and sensible manner, a category the majority of the public fits into. But with most things of this nature, it is the minority that screws it up for the rest of us. The obvious recent example being people thinking letting fireworks off in the dry conditions of the Port Hills – just three years since the major Port Hills blaze – was a good idea. It clearly wasn’t, and the result was a fire raging through 20 hectares, and people having to evacuate their homes in the middle of the night. Accidents can happen. But fireworks being set off in dry conditions causing a major fire is not an accident, it’s stupidity. Despite a green tinge on top, Mid Canterbury is already dry, and forecasters are only predicting things to get drier by the end of the month. Fire and Emergency NZ have introduced restrictions and the hope is that the public respond with common sense. Keep those left-over fireworks for another day, and avoid the potential catastrophe. Otherwise, the remaining freedoms around fireworks will fizzle out.

2020 – a year to remember By Jo Luxton

here is no doubt about it, 2020 has been a year for the history books. This time last year we never could have predicted what 2020 would have meant for us all, and how it would have changed our day-today lives. We couldn’t have predicted that for six weeks we would be glued to our TV for 1pm press conferences, that we would commemorate Anzac Day at our front gates, or that the Easter Bunny would have to be given special essential worker rights in order to deliver Easter treats. Through it all – a strict lockdown, border closures and QR scanning, Mid Cantabrians have shown our resilience. As a team of 37,000 we have pulled together, saved lives and now we are supporting our local economy by supporting our local businesses. Of course, in between the global pandemic, we had an election campaign. A longer one than usual! It was a much different campaign than usual – with a change in alert levels in the beginning meaning that our usual grassroots campaigning methods of door knocking and phone calling were halted. But once those restrictions were lifted, we were into it. Meet the candidates’ events, sign waving, coffee catch-up clinics and numerous meetings and visits kept me busy – all whilst sharing the important Labour values and policies that we are known and supported for. I was pleased to be able to bring a number of Labour Ministers to Ashburton throughout

Covid-19 raised its ugly head in 2020, with world-wide effects. Here in New Zealand, a hitherto unknown became our knight in white lab coat with the population elevating Dr Ashley Bloomfield to almost hero status. this time – Ministers Kris Faafoi, Damien O’Connor and Poto Williams. The outcome of the 2020 General Election humbled me. To win the Rangitata electorate by a margin of 4400 is an absolute privilege, with which I will not take for granted. I promised to be a strong voice for this electorate – to take your concerns and issues to Wellington and advocate for our people, and this remains my position. I will be doing this as the newly elected chairperson of the Primary Production Select Committee, and also as a member, again, of

the Education and Workforce Select Committee. I am incredibly proud to have been given these positions – and have a lot of work ahead of me. I’m up for the job. As chairperson of the Primary Production committee I will work alongside farmers and growers here locally, and all over New Zealand, to maximise the export value of our primary sector, to create and secure new jobs, and to support our brand for a clean, healthy and productive future. On the Education and Workforce committee we will continue to work on our ambitious plan

that builds on the work done last term, like launching the Lunch in Schools programme. Now, 2020 is drawing to a close. The year we never saw coming. But we have tackled the issues head-on, we went hard and early which has left us in a better position than most countries in the world – and whilst there is a lot of work to do in order to support our families, businesses and communities, I am confident we can do it together. Smartening up our act on environmental data

ave we got the smart environmental data we need to inform smart environmental investments? The short answer is no. Federated Farmers recently published analysis of the Government’s Our Freshwater 2020 (FW2020) report jointly published by the Ministry for the Environment and Statistics New Zealand. It’s a thorough, and in places quite disturbing, piece of work by Feds Wellington region Senior Policy Advisor Liz McGruddy. We sent copies to various Ministers and science/environment journalists. Feds has a history of supporting legislation that is based on the Environment Aotearoa approach. However, as Liz reported, the underpinning data must be sound. Liz acknowledges FW2020 was prepared under the pressure of the current environmental reporting timetable, but says in an executive summary that FW2020 “falls well short of being a robust and authoritative source of national statistics and apolitical interpretive analysis”. It includes headlines not

supported by the evidence relied upon; highlights minority findings, but not the majority findings; and presents selected and misleading statistics and graphics. Some quick examples of misleading, confusing or inconclusive data: ■■ FW2020 states we’re losing wetlands, the NZ Greenhouse Gas Inventory tells us wetlands are increasing, StatsNZ commentary on the wetlands data table says no-one really knows. ■■ FW2020 states freshwater habitats are degraded but StatsNZ data tells us 80 per cent of monitored sites had good or excellent habitat, and no sites were poor. ■■ FW2020 reports that “… freshwater species continue to decline”. But this statement is not supported by the data pre-

For invertebrates, 176 of 177 species had no change in conservation status and one worsened (tadpole shrimp). ■■ Macro-invertebrates are a key indicator of stream health. Depending on how you squint your eyes, the rate of improvement is either 4 per cent or 26 per cent, and the rate of decline either 9 per cent (“high confidence”) or 38

per cent (“low confidence”). Either way, do you remember any headlines or news articles noting the fact that the worst degrading trends were in waterways on land with native bush cover? Probably not. Why does this matter? Again, from the executive summary: “The effect is to significantly distort public and political understanding of the national state and trends. The concomitant risk is ill-targeted and ineffective policy interventions and investments.” It’s against this sort of public

understanding of the state of our rivers and wetlands that the freshwater regulations were brought home. Interesting that the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment last week doubled down on advice he gave last year, with another report urging significant improvements to our environmental reporting. Like us, the PCE is very concerned that environmental policy in New Zealand is being based on incomplete and under-funded data collection. We spend as much as $516 million a year on environmental research. And the ramifications of ill-targeted policy is even more costly. Greater effort is needed to get this right. Lambing figures remain steady

Canterbury’s spring lambing figures are largely unchanged from last year, in contrast to the drought-hit North Island where numbers are back 4.8 per cent. In Canterbury and Marlborough, lambs born in spring are estimated at 4.54 million head, very similar to 2019, according Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s lamb crop outlook report. A lift in the number of breeding ewes offset the lower lambing percentage, the report said. “This is a positive result for the region given the drought conditions at mating and pressure from reduced meat processing capacity as a result of Covid-19.” Nationally, sheep and beef farmers achieved a 130.3 per cent lambing percentage, only slightly lower than spring 2019 when a record 131 per cent was achieved. Lamb and sheep export volumes, however, are expected to be more significantly impacted by the follow-on impacts of the drought, due to lower animal weights and the retention of sheep for breeding to rebuild stock numbers. “Despite the challenges of 2020 including drought and Covid-19, sheep farmers demonstrated why they are the world’s best. “Their resilience and the agility of their

farming systems has meant they’ve performed outstandingly and this should be a real point of pride for our sector,” B+LNZ’s chief executive Sam McIvor said. B+LNZ’s Economic Service estimates the number of lambs tailed in spring 2020 decreased by 1.5 per cent or 357,000 head on the previous spring to 22.9 million head. Most of the decline occurred in the North Island as a result of drought conditions. “Although the average lambing percentage is slightly lower, it is worth noting that 2019 was a high performing season.” The number of lambs tailed in the North Island declined 4.8 per cent (546,000 head) to 10.8 million head. The severity of the impact of the autumn drought on the lamb crop was partially offset by excellent climatic conditions at lambing. In contrast, the total number of lambs in the South Island increased 1.6 per cent (189,000 head) to 12.1 million head. Otago was the major driver of the lift in the South Island, recording an increase in total lamb crop of 3.9 per cent. The total number of lambs processed for export in the 2020-21 season is expected to decrease 4.5 per cent from 19.1m head in 2019-20 to 18.2m. The amount of lamb produced is expected to decrease 4.7 per cent due to a

combination of fewer lambs and a slightly lower average carcase weight. The number of adult sheep processed in the 2020-21 season is expected to decrease 10.8 per cent from 3.5m head in 2019-20 to 3.2m. The sharp decline is driven by a 16.3 per cent decline in the North Island as sheep farmers recover after the number of breeding ewes sold in 2020 was higher than expected because of drought. Covid-19 affected winter stock policies on Canterbury mixed cropping farms, in

light of uncertainty about profit margins, given winter lamb schedules. Some farmers switched back to wintering dairy cows in place of trading lambs, but remained open to finishing lambs again in the future. From a market perspective, the underlying fundamentals remain solid, McIvor said. “There’s strong underlying demand for meat – and meat from safe and natural farming sources like New Zealand. Prices are forecast to be at similar levels, or slightly above, five-year averages.”

A former international pilot who had his wings clipped because of Covid-19, is one of five employed on an extra shift at Fonterra’s Darfield plant to meet strong global demand for cream cheese. Liam Fitzgerald, who lives at Rangiora, started flying commercially in 2007, working for Air NZ for the past seven years. He piloted Boeing 777s internationally before Covid-19 grounded the global travel plans of millions of people, leaving him without work in the airline industry. Gaining temporary work at Darfield’s milk powder plant, he has just been employed fulltime after another shift was added to its cream cheese production. “I worked at Fonterra before I started flying, at its Edgecumbe plant, near Whakatane. I grew up in a rural part of the country and worked on dairy farms as I was growing up and it is an industry I really like. “When I couldn’t fly anymore, I thought I would really like to get back into the dairy industry. “The shift work is similar to when I was flying, but in this job I get home every day to see my kids, which is a big positive,” Fitzgerald said. There was also some transfer of skills, with operations at the Darfield plant high tech and automated. “Both use touch screens and automation, so it is somewhat similar. “So it’s a nice job to go into.”

Fitzgerald said he was hoping to do extra study to upskill, to assist him to progress with the company. Whether he returned to flying when global travel returned to pre-Covid-19 volumes was a decision he would make with his family, he said. “At the moment I have a young family, so this job does work well for us.” Fonterra Darfield’s cream cheese plant manager Blake Aston said a fourth shift was added to the three already running so that the plant was operating 24/7. “There are a mix of new staff from inside and outside the dairy industry which is great.” Cream cheese was added as a new product line at Darfield in 2018, in addition to its two milk powder driers. China’s changing demographics had driven a surge in popularity for Western foods leading to huge demand for cream cheese to go into products like cream cheese lollipops and adding it into traditional Chinese pastry like moon cake. It was also popular in dairy beverages such as tea macchiato – which mixes tea with cream and cream cheese. Cream cheese is produced in 20kg blocks, with technology at the plant allowing Fonterra to dial up or down its firmness and consistency to meet customer preference, Aston said. Most of the cream cheese made on site is exported to China. However, the plant also supplied other parts of Asia, Middle East and the United States.

Back on the horse. Allenton’s senior cricketers can rest a bit easier over the next few weeks, after the team bounced back on Saturday in the Canterbury Country Combined competition. After suffering back-to-back losses in the previous weeks, the Mid Canterbury club responded at the Ashburton Domain with a vital 43-run win over Swannanoa in their ninth round clash. Allenton’s fifth win of the season was built around a seriously improved batting performance, despite a couple of players missing due to Hawke Cup commitments on the other side of the Domain. Batting first, the home side notched up their second highest total of the season in their 40 overs. It was followed by a confining display with the ball, as Swannanoa were unable to find the same clout with the bat to threaten their opponent’s total. Allenton’s total of 242/5 was boosted by three half-century stands throughout the innings, indicating a more concerted effort by the team to bat for longer periods. There was no repeat of Allenton’s top order fragility over the past two weeks, despite Satveer Singh (9) falling early. Fellow opener Sanjay Undre was disciplined for his 17, however he was also sent on his way in the 16th over to leave Allenton 65/2. It was oh-so-close for Mid Canterbury in the Hawke Cup, however the side should be overjoyed to claim first innings points at the weekend. The two-match encounter with Otago Country came alive late on the second day at the Ashburton Domain Oval. after the contest appeared to be trickling to a stalemate. Otago Country entered the final hour on Sunday at 82/2 in their second innings, still another 115 runs off the target and a minimum of 16 overs left in the day’s play. However Mid Canterbury whittled away to set themselves up at a late push at an outright win as the visitors lost 5-34 in the final session, slumping to 134/7 with five overs remaining. Otago Country hung on as stumps were drawn and handshakes exchanged. Mid Canterbury earned six points after claiming a 23-run first innings lead. Unlike their earlier season meeting down in Central Otago, batting proved to be a more confronting prospect on both the Saturday and Sunday. Mid Canterbury were bowled for 180 on the opening day, a positive outcome for Country considering the hosts won the toss and went to lunch break at 123/4. Captain William Southby led from the front in tricky conditions with 61, while

Des Kruger was inevitably among the runs with 46. SCORECARD Otago also found the going tough on the Ashburton deck. After heading to tea at 40/3, the visitors were unable to kick on, as Shaun Stagg ripped Country apart to leave them 126/8 late on the Saturday. A stubborn 31-run ninth wicket stand ensured a nervous sleep for Mid Canterbury, before Country were mopped up for 157 early the next morning. Needing quick wickets, Otago Country picked up regular scalps at the top to keep the home side honest. Again it was Kruger’s wicket which proved elusive for the visitors, as he fashioned a crucial knock of 66, which both inflated the second innings target and chewed into the remaining time left in the day. Mid Canterbury were bowled out for 173 in their second innings, which left all three results still on the table, but the advantage very much with the home team. Set 197 to win, Country lost opener Michael Goldstein and Sukhdev Singh in quick succession to wobble at 28/2. A 72-run third wicket stand between Cameron Jackson and Steve Hobson looked to have ruled a line through Mid Canterbury’s chances of an outright win,but it was a premature forecast, as the final flurry of wickets set the hosts up for a remarkable victory. Local knowledge goes a long way at Methven ... Mid Canterbury locals had the most to say at Sunday’s Methven Green Mile day, with a scattering of victories throughout the day. John Hay was in the money twice, picking up wins with Dallas Grimes and Rebel Kibbybones – the latter of which he also trains. Dallas Grimes was recently transferred into the stable of Ineka Lee from Southland trainer Murray Brown, and the result was instant, with the gelding pushing through from the trail to win impressively. Rebel Kibbybones wrapped up a good run of recent form with a dour performance in one of the trotting events for the day, to claim the fifth win of his 46-start career. The training success was the 586th of Hay’s career while the

winning double took him to 1108 victories. Laurence Hanrahan’s exciting pacer Last Of The Mohicans made it two wins from as many starts earlier in the day when Sarah O’Reilly produced a confident drive in the Junior Drivers’ event. In front after the first 100 metres, the four-year-old gelding never looked back and was too slick for his rivals, winning under a good hold. Last Of The Mohicans is owned by Hanrahan, his father Laurence snr, Russell Beardsley and Diana Pye. Also making it two wins from as many starts was Sweet Belle, who claimed the last of the day for trainer-driver Gerard O’Reilly. The three-year-old daughter of Sweet Belle was driven confidently as well and found the front and never looked back.

Sweet Belle is raced by Richard Ashworth, Bryan McGirr and Martin Hickman – who all hail from Methven, making it a real local success, with O’Reilly a committee member of the Methven Trotting Club.

First training win for Jessica Young-Grant … Former Ashburton horsewoman, Jessica Young-Grant grabbed a notable milestone in her career on Sunday when John James Preston gave her the first training win of her career. Young-Grant, who now is based near West Melton, gave the promising pacer every opportunity, leading early before taking a trail and then scooting through the passing lane to win nicely. A nine-match sweep by Team Yonex has resulted in Wilson plunging out of top spot. It was a lopsided affair between the two teams in Mid Canterbury’s open grade interclub sixth round clash, as Yonex moved into a share of second spot after claiming 11 points. Overtaking Wilson on top was Babolat, who claimed a 9-3 win over Team Head in the other interclub meet. Babolat’s win came off the back of a 6-2 win in the singles and a 3-1 win in the doubles. Lee Gilbert, Jayden Cromie, Brendon Adam, Phil Crozier, Jacob Adam and John Leslie all claimed singles wins. Tyler Leonard was toppled by Ethan Cooke in a three-setter, while Cromie was put through his paces by Riley Breen to eventually win 7-5 7-6 (5). Leslie’s battle with Angel Spooner was also a prolonged bout, taken to three sets (6-4 3-6 10-6). Yonex dominated the match against Wilson, not conceding a single set, according to the scorecard. While Neil McCann was taken to a second set tiebreaker against Gareth Evans, Rhys Cromie, Aidan Watt, Ryan Watt, Josh Jones and Clinton Cooke all put on excellent displays in their singles matchups. The side’s rule of the court did not stop there, with clinical wins in all three doubles encounters, which capped a prosperous day out for the newly minted frontrunners. The competition’s third round phase begins this weekend before breaking for Christmas.

Three games. That is all that separated Country Ashburton and Elmwood on Friday, as the scoresheet was taken to with a fine tooth comb to see who would be allocated the additional points. Both sides finished the matchup in Christchurch with three games apiece as Ashburton clinched two singles matches and one in the doubles. The result still could not be ascertained, with a tally up of sets with both groups winning eight apiece. Elmwood however were handed the win and the four competition points courtesy of a superior sum of games won, with the Christchurch’s club’s total of 66 trumping Ashburton’s 63. Age Concern Ashburton

Age Concern is delighted to offer a Staying Safe Driving Course a refresher course for older drivers on Friday 22 January 2021 at the Seniors Centre, 206 Cameron Street. These free courses replace the original Confident Driving for Mature Drivers and are now under the jurisdiction of the NZ Transport Agency. The day will run from 10am until 2.30pm with our National Office facilitator Hariata Hema. There will be a $10 koha to cover morning tea and a finger food lunch. Register at our office, 206 Cameron Street, or phone 3086817 to secure your place. On Friday December 11 the Executive Board hosted a large gathering of members to our annual Christmas afternoon celebration. Those present were treated to a wonderful selection of performances from the Life Dance Academy and the Ages Alive Hip Hop group. Following Pass the Parcel and Carol singing, raffles were drawn and afternoon tea served to conclude a very enjoyable occasion. Our Ages Alive Hip Hop group have given a number of exhibition performances over recent weeks. We thank them and tutor Jessie Thomson, for raising Age Concern’s profile in the Community. The Courtesy Driving service continues to be in great demand. Remember, your vehicle needs to be registered, warranted and have third party insurance to qualify for this service. Age Concern’s 206 Club are having their final 3 days for 2020 this week and the Christmas cheer is evident with festive decorations aplenty. All services take a break over the Holiday period with the office closing Tuesday December 22, reopening Monday 11 January 2021. Allenton Bowling Club

What an exciting weekend we have had with our three 7s teams qualifying for Sunday play at different venues in Christchurch. The men, Matt, Alex, Peter, Mike, Richard, John and Graeme [known as Bish.] played in Division2. had the most fantastic win over Christchurch to bring home the Trophy. What an awesome team of seven bowlers. Great, Awesome and very well done. The women went right through to lose to Canterbury in the final. Great work girls you must have played very very well to achieve this result. The under 5s also have also played a great tournament to reach the last four. Great for the future of Allenton. What Bowlers, what a Club, fantastic everyone. The women have the 2x4s played on Saturday mornings. Congratulations to all who played in this competition. There were some tight games and some top bowls played. This is a real top effort as all teams played their best players. Fantastic effort. Last Wednesday, playing the 5s the Div.1 team won both games pairs 25-9 and triples 16-12, this leaves them in second place with the game against Riverside that was weather delayed earlier in the season still to be played. If they were to win this game they would win the whole competition. Div. 5 defaulted. Div 3 played Burnside the Pairs lost 1711 and triples won 21-11 their competition is now finished, however a lot is to be learned and enjoyed by playing teams out of our area, so well done all. Last Saturday the Men’s 3x4s lost 1 game and won 2 the Men’s 2x4 won both games. Well done guys. The juniors had a loss this time. Neil had a great turn out for Saturday Progressive pairs mainly men, but I was delighted to see a lady holding our end up. Results were; Lead 1st. Lindsay Forde 2 wins 14 ends 2nd. Ken McLaren 2 wins 12 ends the skip. Winners were John Bruce 3wins 15 ends and Barry Molloy 3 wins 12 ends this is an enjoyable afternoon starts sharp and finishes in good time. Neil Sharplin runs this well and has done so for a number of years. People like you make the club a great place for us all Neil. The people who run the bowls functions have had another busy week, this year our new social bowls have been well used and enjoyed as they play the tighter line, making it a little easier for all. BBQs again and lots of Yummy Salads. Remember Friday triples on the 18th. start early 10.30am at our Club, make sure your teams are ready for this time change. The Girls are lunching out on Tuesday at the Ashburton Hotel, purely a social gathering of friends. Sound great to me. What can I say but keep up the great bowls everyone.

We enjoyed taking part in the County Lions Christmas Festive Forest. Members Annette and Denise decorated our tree, which won the “People’s Choice” category. Comments included “pretty” and “clever”. We have recently made a donation of food to St Vincent de Paul, plus a donation to Ashburton Salvation Army and Presbyterian Social Support of books for Christmas through these three groups; three offerings of 60 books to each of these groups will make many children happy this Christmas. Members compiled some attractive Memory Books for people residing in Princes Court. Rosters for Meals on Wheels for April and October next year were shared. Our regular “Books on Wheels”, bringing fortnightly pleasure to the readers in Ashburton, continue with expert assistance from the Ashburton Public Library. The prospect of clubs and leagues being unable to carry on is very real. We are so very lucky!

A lovely big field turned up on Saturday to have a go at the Xmas Salvers, leading the ladies section with a great score of 40 points was the wonderful Bev Chinn. 40 points was also the top score in the mens section with Bevan Wilson snaffling himself top prize. Both of the winners got themselves a big bottle of Christmas cheer thanks to our wonderful friends at Radius Care. The table was full of prizes, which was nice to see. Bev and Bevan along with over 60 others put their names in for the Property Brokers shootout as well, so will take pole position in the qualifying. I don’t think we have ever had so many players attempt to get in the Shootout competition, so this really speaks volumes to its standing in the club calendar and the great Property Brokers gang for getting behind it. You can still enter the Shootout this Saturday if you want to. You only need to get in 2 scores and we have 4 qualifying rounds left. We will be playing every Saturday right through the holiday period, with normal start times. It’s a great way to burn off any excess trifle or pav. The shootout final is Sunday 24th January, so keep that date free, even if you don’t manage to qualify it is still a great spectacle. If you fancy a bit of extra golf over Christmas. The Jolly Boys and Girls are heading up to Weedons on Sunday 27th December to play in their Xmas tourney, if anyone fancies a trip just give Paddy a shout, we promise to get you there safely, give you a good laugh at someone’s expense (normally mine or Spuds) and get you home before new year. Weedons is a lovely track with great members who always make us very welcome. Catch you all around the course, good golfing.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club

President Avis Kingsland opened the

December meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club, the National Anthem was sung, and birthdays and anniversaries celebrated. Dot had just celebrated her 90th birthday. A new member, Lorraine was introduced by Margaret and inducted into the club. Ideas were asked for meetings in 2021. Donations for Foodbank had been received at this meeting. After morning tea Julie introduced the guest speaker, Moira who told a fascinating story about her life. She was born in Edinburgh, and came out here with her family in 1953. They settled in North Canterbury where she was home schooled. In 1961 arrived in Ashburton and went to Ashburton High School. She also learnt the piano. Teachers College was attended in 1968. Married and went to a new job in Balfour, daughter arrived. Windwhistle, son arrived. With her husband they went to an interview to be a teacher on Pitcairn Island, there were 53 applicants, so they didn’t think they had a chance, but were successful. Three weeks to prepare, and had to order goods to last nine months. The people of Pitcairn Island are the direct descendants of Pitcairn’s first European settlers, the HMAV Bounty mutineers, and their Polynesian consorts. It was a different experience, they spent two years there. There were only 63 people on the island. When leaving there was a formal send off, a special dress was made for Moira which she was wearing. It was back to Balclutha, and eventually arriving back to Ashburton in 1995. Moira then played three notes on the piano and asked if we could guess which carol they were, then everyone joined in the singing. Julie thanked Moira for her fascinating speech. Avis closed the meeting with the Thought for the Month – It’s not what’s under the tree that matters: it’s who is gathered around it.

Tinwald Garden Club

36 members enjoyed a very interesting meeting. Kerri Middleton of Selwyn Peonies from Charing Cross shared with us the intricacies of running an international business of growing 6000 Peony roses. Their busiest time is the six weeks when the peonies flower, the processes in picking and

exporting these delicate flowers. They are picked in tight bud and stored in a chiller before they are boxed for export. Kerri said that they were lucky to work with the only New Zealand breeder of peonies. She showed us a newly developed peony called Eternal Love and it will become popular for bridal bouquets. We were shown the process of dividing and replanting tubers and how to look after them in our gardens. The plants produce more vibrant flowers if grown where winters are colder. Kerri was really interesting. Members were able to purchase bunches of flowers and plants. Ann Truman thanked Kerri on behalf of the club. Roger put together a presentation of Christmas Carols on the screen and everyone enjoyed singing along with them. To end the morning ladies viewed Scammell’s lovely garden. Elizabeth thanked everyone for coming and wished then all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

A WINNING HAND

The odds-on favourite made his decisive move on the final rise of the four-lap event, and soloed the last 4km to victory Steve Hands topped off a stellar first half of the Tinwald Cycling Club’s season, scoring a victory in the Ashburton Club and MSA Super Liquor, Club Championships, contested over 64km around the Wakanui Beach block on Sunday. The odds-on favourite made his decisive move on the final rise of the four-lap event, and soloed the last 4km to victory. Hands covered the distance in 92.08. Hands, along with second place-getter Brad Hudson, third place-getter Larry Neal, and vet 3

men’s winner Tony Ward had earlier snuck to the front of the race on the first lap. The chasing group contained vet 2 men’s champion Mike Gallagher, along with senior men’s title holder Cole Harris. Kristine Marriott was in the thick of this bunch, producing her trademark tough ride, to lift the open women’s championship title. Sam Cuttle continued his solid build-up for the Coast to Coast, lifting the under 19 title. Paul Williams capped off his

recent good form, securing vet 4 men’s championship honours. Marcel Smithers continued her hot start to the season claiming the vet 1 women’s ribbon, with Michelle Knight securing the senior women’s major spoils. Liz Wylie was rewarded for a great ride lifting the vet 4 women’s title. Wayne Whiting rode strongly to secure sealed handicap honours. The juniors raced for club championship honours over 16km.

Mitch Brookland showed his dominance, securing an allthe-way victory in the under 17 grade, riding the course in 27.02. Maddi Lowry ensured her last race in junior ranks would be a memorable one, claiming the under 17 girls’ title. Zoe Spillane continues to impress, rounding out a good first half of the season with the under 15 championship ribbon. Zac Brookland topped off a good day for the Brookland stable, taking the under 15 boys’ title. Ryan Gallagher rode a super

race to lift sealed handicap honours. Paul Brake took the bragging rights in division 2, getting up over his wife Monique in a tough sprint finish. Kyla Smith secured the final podium position. Merv Grewar finished the year off with the sealed handicap envelope. The club will take a break over Christmas and kick the New Year off with a 36km handicap event around the Winchmore Church block on January 10, 2021.
