Hot Ash in receivership BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@ATHEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The receivers have been called into the Hotel Ashburton by the Ashburton Trust, ending several months of uncertainty over the business’ future. Late last year Inland Revenue put the hotel’s owners Hotel Ashburton 2016 in liquidation over unpaid taxes and yesterday the trust took the next step of putting the business in the hands of

receivers Malcolm Hollis and John Fisk of Price Waterhouse. Trust chairwoman Fay Watson said the receivers would run the hotel until new buyers were found. “The aim is to sell the business as a going concern. The receivership gives staff certainty. The hotel continues to operate and the receiver pays their wages. “It’s business as usual. The doors are not locked. Functions

go ahead as planned, it’s business as usual,” Watson said. While the receivers would be running the hotel, staff would continue doing this on a day-today basis as they had been for some time, she said. “The receivers are taking over operating it while they look for a buyer.” Hollis says he was confident a good buyer would be found for the business, but said he’s unlikely

to start the marketing process for a month or two. His first priority was to get it running properly again. The Hotel Ashburton 2016 company, owned by Peter Whittaker and his family, had a High Court date on January 25 as part of the liquidation process. In the trust appointing a receiver before that date Hollis said it ensured the business would be sold as a going concern.

“The receiver has the ability to continue to operate the business, whereas the IRD is more likely to go in, sell chattels and close the doors. I’ll now be responsible for running the business until it’s sold. “We’ll focus on people, suppliers and customers.”

Second farm found with M. bovis BY COLIN WILLISCROFT COLIN.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A second farm in the Ashburton district has tested positive for mycoplasma bovis. Ministry for Primary Industries incident controller David Yard said the farm is one associated with the property that tested positive last week. Yard said the first farm in the district that MPI suspected as having the disease, which came under suspicion before Christmas, when the ministry said it was “highly likely” to have the bacteria, is still undergoing testing. The latest confirmation brings the number of farms nationwide with M. bovis to 17, up from 14 last week. The other two new discoveries are in Southland. On top of the two confirmed Ashburton properties, Yard said there were a number of others in to district that are being looked at, although he could not provide an exact number. “We can’t easily provide a numerical picture of farms coming into and out of surveillance scru-

tiny in Mid Canterbury,” he said. “But yes, there are some farms that are being interviewed and then considered not at risk and there are others where animal movement connections are found and those properties are put under legal directions to contain risk. “As investigations proceed, some of these legal directions may be (and are) lifted. The area is very definitely being checked and where possible, farms are cleared.” As a result of the ongoing investigations in Mid Canterbury, Yard said MPI had decided to set up a field HQ in Ashburton. It has already established one in Oamaru and Invercargill. On Wednesday this week MPI, with the assistance of Fonterra, Synlait, MyMilk and Westland Milk Products began a began a district-wide, two round testing programme that involves monitoring herds for M. bovis by testing milk from cows affected by mastitis, lameness or other sickness.

Hot Ash in receivership From P1 Closing the doors was the last thing the trust wanted for the community, Watson said. “We’ve had concerns for some time but we had a legal process to work through before we were able to act.” With the receivers now running the hotel, the community could be assured their asset was in safe hands, she said. “This is a reassurance that it’s business as usual. “We need the support of the

community, we need people to go out there and to book functions. People need to know the bills will be paid and as a customer you won’t notice any difference.” Having to put the hotel business in receivership was disappointing for the trust, Watson said, but it had been leased with solid legal processes in place that ensured the community’s asset was protected. “Our interests are what’s best for the community, keeping the hotel running and to keep the staff happy.”

A splash in the pool can be the perfect way to beat the heat – but deadly accidents can happen in a matter of seconds, advises a new campaign from the New Zealand Recreation Association. PHOTO SUPPLIED

Please, watch your children BY KATIE TODD

KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Parents heading poolside with their young ones are being urged to keep an eye on the water at all times. Following seven preventable under-5 drowning fatalities in the country last year, the New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA) are delivering a new campaign reminding parents to put down the phone and keep watch of their children in the water. The new campaign, delivered as part of the Poolsafe scheme, will see posters put up at participating Poolsafe pools around the country. Ashburton’s EA

Networks Centre is one. Tracey Prince, Aquatics Programme at NZRA said the posters are designed to remind parents and guardians that accidents can happen in seconds. “Even if there are plenty of lifeguards at a pool, putting down your cellphone and making sure there are no distractions can be the difference between life and death.” According to Water Safety New Zealand, an average of six infants under the age of five drown each year with a further 34 hospitalised – and 87 per cent of incidents attributed to inadequate adult supervision. The new campaign delivers

a really important message in a really effective way, said Water Safety New Zealand CEO Jonty Mills. “There really is no other answer than constant active adult supervision.” The project was created by Massey University design graduate Gretchen McAleer, who was inspired by her work as a lifeguard. “I was a lifeguard for six years and the accidents and near misses that I witnessed in that time prompted me to do something about supervision awareness. Accidents can happen so quickly – I really hope that these Poolsafe posters make a difference.”

“Lots of good iron and lots of good veins,” were on show at the Ashburton MSA yesterday, in the second day of a visit from NZ-

ferent areas three days a week, including Ashburton every couple of months. “Ashburton’s always a good one,” she said. While the hot weather had left some donators a little dehydrat-

Blood. The service left Ashburton with bags of blood from 120 generous donators. NZBlood nurse Karen Templeton said a group of 10 nurses from Christchurch travel to dif-

ed, she said it had been a good visit. NZBlood will next be in town on February 14 and appointments to donate can be made on 0800 448-325.

A summer adventure camp is serving up a hearty helping of outdoor adventure fun to nine enthusiastic young participants this week. Organised by Mania-o-roto Scout Park assistant zone leader Philip Crozier and held over three days, the third annual adventure camp has given its participants the chance to get right amongst the outdoors. Crozier said the group climbed Mt Alford on Wednesday, camped at Mania-o-roto last night and cooked up pizzas, and will head to Lake Hood on their bikes today. There have been chances aplenty to enjoy the warm weather, but “they’re simple things that don’t cost money,” Crozier said. The camp is open to scouts and non-scouts of intermediate age, with the chance for participants to experience a taste of scouting life.

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Tough stance taken on second bridge By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton’s district councillors have laid down a challenge to the New Zealand Transport Agency over the timing and funding of the second Ashburton River bridge. During this week’s discussions on the long term plan, its spending bible for the next 10 years, councillors decided to take a hard line on the bridge project, refusing to budget for what the transport agency says will be their

share of costs, 49 per cent. Instead, councillors are hoping to force the agency’s hand by budgeting for just 20 per cent of cost of the project. And they have also refused to shift their timeframe for design work and construction. If the council put full figures in its budget it was showing its hand by making it clear what it intended to contribute, councillor Stuart Wilson said. “We’re far better to play this

close to our chests.” The council’s original plan was for the bridge to be built in the 2028/2029 year but it is not on the transport agency’s committed spending radar for the next 10 years. It was listed with NZTA as a category four project, roading manager Brian Fauth said. “That means that it has no priority, no one is pushing it at this stage, but the quicker we can get a design in the drawer, the more

likely we are to get it built.” That made it very clear that Ashburton was on its own in trying to move the project forward Russell Ellis said. “This is an important project for us. We need to get our MPs on board. There’s no point in talking about four-laning the highway without the second bridge.” Councillors might not want to show their hand in terms of what they were prepared to pay for the bridge, Neil Brown said, but

spending had to be signalled in the long term plan. He suggested the plan show figures that were 20 per cent of the estimated cost in years four and five and eight and nine and accompany that with a narrative that made it clear an 80 per cent contribution by NZTA was expected. That would allow the project to be re-evaluated when the long term plan was reviewed in three years time.

Police warn public about scammers By Katie todd

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

More community events on horizon By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton could see more community ‘feel good’ events held around the district this year. Money has been tagged in the Ashburton District Council’s budget to enable council staff to develop a range of events aimed at locals, similar to the Bite Nite and the Christmas event, Light up the Night, held last year. Council community relations manager Vincie Billante told councillors during their long term plan discussions, that she wanted a pool of money that could be used for these events. “This is about council run events that are for the community rather than events that’ll bring people into the district. This is

about events that are a boost for the community, feel good things,” she said. Currently the council has $20,000 set aside for this. This was previously allocated to Experience Mid Canterbury as seed funding for local events, but this will now be controlled by the council. But if the council wanted to do more, it would need to budget more Billante said, suggesting an additional $50,000 would allow her to put resources into the planning and execution of these. It was a question of where the funds came from, she said. While Experience Mid Canterbury planned to use the money saved from the closure of Ashburton’s i-SITE for events, these would be events that brought outsiders

into the district; what the council would be doing was local events for local people, Billante said. Russell Ellis wanted the money to come out of the council’s economic development budget, from money previously given to the now defunct Grow Mid Canterbury as an annual grant. Mayor Donna Favel said she was concerned the council was eroding a lot of the funds it had set aside for economic development, with other items in its budget also being funded through this source. “We’re slowly nibbling away at this piece by piece.” Her councillors didn’t agree and decided to allocate an extra $30,000 to community events to come from the economic development budget.

Canterbury Police are encouraging people to think twice before hitting the send button on private content. With dating sites and apps continuing to grow in popularity, police are urging users to remember that once something is shared it is out of their control and extremely difficult to delete – and to remember that the issue of scammers is not about to go away. According to acting prevention manager senior sergeant Stephen McDaniel scams can be sophisticated and wellplanned, and scammers do everything they can to appear legitimate. This includes using fake identities, pictures they find on the internet and stories that have worked for them before to gain something from a person. Police encourage people not to take personal photographs of themselves or recordings of compromising activities.

Once these images are obtained, a scammer may attempt to extort money by threatening to release these images into the public arena and to their family, friends or employer. Police said they receive scam reports from people of all ages and backgrounds, but prevention is key. Never share a photo of yourself that you wouldn’t want anyone else to see … never respond to a request for money or financial information via an online dating app or website. And if you receive an email that appears to be from a bank, government organisation or other agency but you are unsure of its authenticity, police recommend phoning the organisation to check if the email is legitimate. Anyone who believes they are a victim of any crime, in person or online, should report the matter to their local Police, and anyone seeking more information is advised to head to the Netsafe website.

Teenagers charged after hold-up Three teenagers have been charged with aggravated robbery after a pizza delivery driver was allegedly held up and threatened with a weapon in Napier. The teens are aged 13, 14 and 15, with the 13-year-old now re. Detective Sergeant Craig Vining said the attack happened on Sunday at about 11pm when the 22-year-old delivery driver was threatened after taking his order to the Quality Inn Hotel’s car park on Hastings Street. One of the offenders assault-

ed him, while another entered his car and took his phone and cash, he said. He said the group of teens then made off with the pizza and stolen goods, running on foot and riding on push scooters. The driver is recovering well from the alleged attack but police are still calling for witnesses, saying the group of teens had been acting in a disorderly and noisy way that would have made it likely other people would have seen them. – NZME

■■METHVEN

Funding boost for care trust The Methven Care Trust has received another boost to its funding pool thanks to the organisers of last year’s Methven High Country Fete. Ashburton Trust back in the black When the Ashburton Trust held its annual meeting last night, it was an occasion for celebration. After several years where its trading profit ran in the red, the community-owned organisation posted a healthy profit. And that change in fortunes had everything to do with its new business model, one that has seen it sell of most of its hospitality businesses and become a landlord where income is earned from property investment. Two businesses were sold in 2016, three in 2017 and one has been sold since balance date, leaving just the Devon Tavern in active management by the trust. In her annual report, trust president Fay Watson said the

board was pleased that a financial turnaround had been achieved so quickly after the business model change. “Cashflow is positive and the short and long-term risk profiles have improved significantly during a period when hospitality competition in the town continues to grow rapidly. Timing of the restructure is positive for the community,” she said. The 2017 financial results show a bottomline profit of $3.9m, but this figure on its own was distorted and had to be put in perspective. The “normalised” profit was $423,000, Watson said. The financial reporting standards required a landlord to revalue land and buildings for account-

ing purposes. As a result, the Hotel Ashburton and Speight’s Ale House moved from depreciated historic cost to net market value, and that resulted in the $3.5m revaluation showing in the accounts. There were also business disposal costs and related one-off entries. “If we strip these back, a more realistic bottom line to consider is a profit of $420,000. The board is very pleased to be reporting this $420,000 profit, which is a complete turn-around from results of recent years.” Overhead costs had been significantly reduced during the year, and the administration structure was now very lean. The trust parent had repaid all bank debt, with the remaining

mortgage relating to the subsidiary company Somerset Ashburton Ltd which owns Somerset House. “This company is on a path of steady debt reduction which is forecast to see it debt free in 10 years,” Watson said. Looking ahead, the trust board was currently developing an investment policy which recognised its intergenerational focus and the trust’s 100-year-plus life ahead. In conjunction with this the board is simultaneously developing a community support policy, she said. “While it directly operated hospitality outlets the focus for sponsorships and donations was most often related to hospitality. This may or may not change in the future, and is under review. The

board is researching the option to reconstitute as a community trust, a more appropriate entity now that hospitality is no longer the trust’s main source of income.” The trust board had continued to support a number of community organisations over the last year through donations and had allocated more than $1.6m of grants for the year to March 2017. The trust’s subsidiary, which owns the Somerset building, made its first community grant this year, supporting the Ashburton Hospital project. Somerset Ashburton Ltd is a charitable company and as its debt reduces it will increasingly be able to provide charitable grants to the community in future years, Watson said.

■ UNITED STATES

Asteroid ‘relatively close’ A gigantic asteroid which is larger than the world’s tallest building will hurtle past our planet in around two weeks’ time. The 2002 AJ129 asteroid has been classed a “potentially hazardous” by Nasa and will fly past at speeds of 107,826km/h. This makes it nearly 15 times faster than the world’s quickest manned aircraft – the hypersonic North American X-15, which travelled at 7300km/h, according to the Daily Mail. The asteroid is around 1.1km wide – making it longer than the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at 0.8km. It is set to pass by our planet on the February 4 at a distance of around 4,208,641km away – which is relatively close in space terms. For reference, the distance between the Earth and the moon is384,400 km. Nasa describes asteroids as “hazardous” if they come within 7,403,00km of our planet. It is the largest space rock to brush past our planet this year and previous research has found a rock of this size could plunge Earth into a mini-ice age if it hit. The impact would cause average temperatures around the world to fall by as much as 8°C, according to a 2016 study on the effects of a collision with a 1km asteroid. Scientists warned the “very severe global impact” would last several years, causing the world to become a much darker, colder and drier place. “These would not be pleasant times,” Charles Bardeen, of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, said during a presentation at the American Geophysical Union (AGU). In the “worst case scenario”, soot would remain in the atmosphere for around 10 years, while dust take six years to settle back on Earth. Fortunately Nasa does not think this asteroid will collide with Earth.

Currently Nasa would not be able to deflect an asteroid if it were heading for Earth but it could mitigate the impact and take measures that would protect lives and property. This would include evacuating the impact area and moving key infrastructure. Finding out about the orbit trajectory, size, shape, mass, composition and rotational dynamics would help experts determine the severity of a potential impact. However, the key to mitigating damage is to find any potential threat as early as possible. “As of December 24, there are 17,495 known Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) around our planet; 17,389 are asteroids”, a Nasa spokesperson told the Express last month. “This year, we discovered 1,985 new NEOs. “There were 1888 such objects discovered in 2016 and 1,571 in 2015.” Nasa is developing a refrigerator-sized spacecraft capable of preventing asteroids from colliding with Earth. A test with a small, non threatening asteroid is planned for 2024. This is the first-ever mission to demonstrate an asteroid deflection technique for planetary defence. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) would use what is known as a kinetic impactor technique – striking the asteroid to shift its orbit. The impact would change the speed of a threatening asteroid by a small fraction of its total velocity, but by doing so well before the predicted impact, this small nudge will add up over time to a big shift of the asteroid’s path away from Earth. In February 2013 a 19-metre meteor exploded in the skies above Chelyabinsk in Russia. The energy – which was equivalent to 500,000 tonnes of TNT – and injured more than 1000 people. - PA

Project Runway NZ Are you New Zealand’s next top designer? If so, TVNZ 2 wants you apply for a starring role in Project Runway New Zealand. It’s the first local version of the hit US series and will see ambitious Kiwi designers competing against each other in front of a panel of industry judges who are yet to be revealed. Each week one competitor will face elimination. The final challenge for the remaining designers will be to create a full collection. Project Runway has been a ratings hit overseas, running for 16 seasons on American screens where it is hosted by Heidi Klum.

Selling like hotcakes Michael Wolff ’s Fire and Fury sold more than 190,000 hardcover copies last week, the book’s first full week of publication, a company which tracks the retail market said yesterday. In less than two weeks since its release, combined e-book, audio and hardcover sales now top 500,000 for Wolff ’s sensational account of a dysfunctional Trump administration. NPD BookScan, which compiles about 85 per cent of hardcover and paperback sales, said about 220,000 hardcover copies have sold in all. That number is expected to go much higher. The book caught on with so many people that publisher Henry Holt and Co. has struggled to keep copies available.

The asteroid is around 1.1km wide, longer than the Burj Khalifa in Dubai which stands at 0.8km high.

■ PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Major eruption ‘could be soon’ Seismic activity beneath a Papua New Guinea volcano could mean that a major eruption was imminent, a volcanologist said yesterday. Thousands of people have been evacuated from islands surrounding Kadovar Island off the South Pacific nation’s north coast since a volcano there began erupting on January 5, spouting ash. Flights nearby have been cancelled due to the risk posed by ash plumes and ships were

warned to stay away from the island. Steve Saunders, who is principal geodetic surveyor at the Rabaul Volcano Observatory in Papua New Guinea, said seismic activity had recently increased beneath the volcano. “The reason we’re getting activity is probably because new magma is moving up from deeper down,” Saunders told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has said relevant state resources were being made available to support evacuations and he warned northern coastal communities to be alert for possible tsunamis. Kadovar is offshore to the north of New Guinea, the larger island that includes Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby. Aikari Muri, the International Red Cross’ disaster risk management logistics officer

for Papua New Guinea, said the military had used two boats to completely evacuate the 600 Kadovar residents to the mainland. He could not say whether the evacuations of nearby islands had been completed by yesterday. Papua New Guinea sits on the “Ring of Fire,” a line of seismic faults encircling the Pacific that has frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. - NZME

It’s just a pot belly BBC presenter Steph McGovern had a hilarious response for viewers congratulating her on her “pregnancy”, before describing the confusion as “just life on camera”. The Breakfast presenter, who was discussing the collapse of British firm Carillion, received tweets from viewers who mistakenly thought she was expecting a child. But McGovern, a Breakfast show regular and leading financial journalist, quipped: “I am not with child, I am with pot belly.” She added: “I’d definitely be in the wrong job if I got offended by comments like that. Even my own auntie asked me once if I was pregnant after seeing me on the telly – that’s just life on camera.”

Easy As – How to build a raised vege garden If you want to grow the biggest, healthiest, fastest-growing veges, build yourself a raised vege garden. Because everything’s contained you can fill your raised garden up with all the very best soil, compost, mulch, and fertiliser. Then, just plant your veges and stand back.

Before you start

• If you’re thinking about building a raised vege garden, the first step is deciding where it’s going to go. Veges like a nice balance. • A bit of shelter, a bit of shade and decent amount of sun so try to find a spot where they’ll get at least five hours of sun a day. A reasonably level site is a good idea as well, and since it’s a fresh food garden try not to have it too far from the kitchen.

macrocarpa is rot resistant and looks great, but you pay a premium for it. • H4 treated pine is popular because it’s economical and you can buy it anywhere. And because it’s treated, it won’t rot either. The debate is around whether the timber treatment chemicals will leach into the soil you’re growing your veges in. If you’re not comfortable with treated timber you can staple polythene sheet around the inside of the planks as a barrier between the timber and soil. • Just remember that good drainage is important for a raised garden so don’t run the polythene sheet over the bottom of the garden.

What size timber

• Once you know where the garden’s going, work out what size you’d like it to be. You can go any size and shape but 2.1 x 1.8 metres is pretty common, partly because you’re dealing with standard lengths of timber but also because anything wider than 1.8 metres makes it a bit of a stretch to reach the plants in the middle of the garden. • On a garden this size, good, solid, 200 x 50mm planks will ensure the garden holds it shape and two plankseach side will give you a comfortable 400mm working height. • A popular alternative to the 200 x 50mm planks are the big, 200 x 100mm macrocarpa timbers we use on the Mitre 10 Easy As online video. • At 200 x 100mm, ‘sleeper’ is probably a more accurate description than plank, and while they cost more and don’t make a better raised garden, they do create a great look. • Like the smaller planks, they’re also available in the 2.1m and 1.8m lengths. A general rule-of-thumb is that two, well managed, 2.1 x 1.8 metre gardens is just about right for a family of four.

Site preparation

• This is pretty simple. Once you’ve decided where your raised garden will go and what size it’s going to be, mark it out, grab your spade, and skim off any grass and vegetation. You don’t need to take a lot. • 20mm should get you down to bare dirt but you might find you’ll need to take a little more off in places to get your planks sitting even and level.

Macrocarpa build

200 x 100mm • On the Easy As Raised Garden Build video we went up a step from standard 200 x 50 planks and used big 200 x 100 macrocarpa planks. The build process is the same either way, apart from the fact that with the bigger timber we screw them together rather than nailing. • Start by getting your bottom four planks in place, line them up and screw them together using 150 x 12mm hex head coach screws. The screw holes have to

What kind of timber

• There’s ongoing debate about what timber you should use to build a raised garden. An untreated hardwood like

HOW TO BUILD A RAISED

be predrilled so you’ll need an electric drill and two different sized drill bits. One 25mm bit to countersink the head of the coach screws and one 12mm bit to predrill the holes below the head of the screw. DO NOT drill the 12mm bit through into the end of the other timber you’re screwing into. The screw thread needs to bite into solid wood to hold firm but you can use a smaller drill (no larger than 8mm) to make screwing into place easier. You’ll also need a socket set with a socket that matches the hex head of your coach screws. Get all four base planks into position and lined up, predrill your screw holes (including the countersinking for the hex heads of the coach screws) and screw together. Use two coach screws in each corner. Measure corner-to-corner diagonally to make sure everything’s square. If not, just bump it into line until it’s squared up and diagonal measurements match. Run a spirit level along the top of each plank, use a spade to trim any high spots off the ground and once you’ve got everything sitting down level you’re ready to repeat the process. Put the top planks on, predrill, screw together then just skew-nail the top planks to the bottom planks in each corner. It’s not essential, but for extra stability you can drive a wooden peg into each inside corner and nail it in place.

Standard build

200 x 50mm Planks • Going with the 200 x 50 planks will cost less plus it’s quicker and easier because it’s nailed together rather than screwed.

Get growing

• You’ve got the ‘raised’ part of your raised garden sorted, now it’s time for the garden. Spread about six layers of old newspaper over the ground to help prevent weed growth then wet down with a little water to hold the paper in place while you add soil. • The first layer should be green material such as green waste and the sod you removed when you were preparing the garden. • This green material will rot down and provide great worm food, attracting worms to your garden and creating nice rich soil. • Then cover your green waste with layers of potting mix and compost, or make it even easier by simply filling with vege mix (a garden mix and potting mix combo). • Aim to fill your raised garden up to about 50mm from the top, rake it level then, shoot down to the Mitre 10 garden department and decide what veges you want to plant in there.

HOW TO BUILD A RAISED VEGE GARDEN Be the envy of your neighbours . . . grow the biggest, healthiest, fastest-growing vegetables in a raised vegetable garden. So easy to build, and great to enhance your gardening area.

Having a place to get away from it all is an attractive prospect at this time of year. It’s easy to fall in love with the thought of your own slice of paradise, particularly if it’s in a popular spot. But buying a holiday property, whether it’s a bach at the beach or a rural idyll, is every bit as complex as buying a home that you live in full-time. That means you need to do your homework first to avoid any hassles – and that you engage a lawyer to help you through the process. Once you’ve found a property you like, it’s essential that you and your lawyer look at all the relevant documents, such as the legal title and any information that the council has about the property, as recorded on the LIM. A title search will reveal any ‘invisible’ issues relating to the boundary or access. You should also check with the council whether there are any proposed developments in the area that could have an impact on the property and the neighbourhood. It’s a good idea to get the property thoroughly checked by someone who can identify significant defects, future or urgent maintenance issues and problems caused

by gradual deterioration. It’s not uncommon for a coastal holiday property to have a few more maintenance issues than you might expect from a city townhouse. We recommend using a qualified and insured building inspector to do this work. If you get a DIY guru friend in to have a look instead, ask them to look for structural problems, any evidence that the property is a leaky building, issues caused by deferred maintenance (such as weatherboards rotting due to peeling paint) and areas where there is damp or mould. Simple things like aged electrical or water supply fixtures may also create headaches later on if not managed up front. Don’t forget to factor in costs for fixing any identified problems that may be significantly more involved to manage than town repairs and maintenance, as well as plan for long-term upkeep. Depending on where the property is, you also need to be hard-headed about the risk of natural hazards such as tsunami or coastal erosion. Earlier this year, a report commissioned by the Deep South National Science Chal-

lenge pointed out that nearly 44,000 homes in New Zealand are less than 1.5 metres above the current average spring high tide mark.

It can be difficult to get finance approved if a property cannot be insured, so it pays to investigate this closely. If you get through all those steps and the property still looks like a good bet, think about the long-term. Are you thinking about using it to earn an income when you’re not in residence, such as renting it out or putting it on AirBnB or a similar platform?

P.A.

With rising sea levels and increasing likelihood of storm surges and king tides predicted, many of these properties are at serious risk of frequent inundation. Unsurprisingly, insurers are nervy about this, with some companies already raising premiums or excesses for properties that have been identified as high-risk, or putting restrictions on what they will cover.

Getting settled in your new holiday home is one thing, but consider what happens when you’re not there. Finally, if the property you are keen on is being sold privately, be aware that you may have fewer protections under the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act if things go wrong. While no one enters into a sale thinking that problems are going to arise, issues can often crop up. Nothing will dim your holiday glow like the lasting memory of a poorly researched property decision.

Be aware that some councils are tightening up restrictions on homeowners doing this, which could affect your plans and costs. Take a moment to think about security as well.

Ranger does it again! F

or the third year in a row, Ford’s Ranger was the overall bestselling new vehicle in NZ. And of course was also the the best-selling ute, for the fourth consecutive year. So the Ranger, which since its arrival has created a strong reputation for its abilities both on and off-road, clearly appeals to and suits the NZ lifestyle. That no doubt happens through the combination of its tough but civilised looks, grunty, 3.2-litre five-cylinder engine, refined cabin and strong ladder chassis complete with coil front/rear leaf spring suspension. And that it can tow 3500kg. Currently I’m driving an FX4 Ranger costing $65,390. It differs slightly from the latest XLT by the addition of black 18-inch alloys, black coloured leather seating, roof rails, sports bar, rear bumper, side-steps and grille. So let’s have a quick review of how the Ranger appears to so well ticks all the right boxes. In doing this one needs to remember, that despite being used by so many as day-to-day transport, it’s officially a commercial vehicle! I reckon that the FX-4’s black highlights and larger wheels nicely accentuate both its street cred and rugged yet smart looks. The side steps are great for easing into the cabin, where Ford has obviously done lots to make it both car-like and very easy to use. It’s spacious, comfortable, with soft

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

touch materials and is much like being in a quality car, especially with excellent Sync 3 infotainment system. It’s so easy to use with its 8-inch colour screen for the sat-nav, sound system, dualzone climate-air, phone, rear view camera and parking sensors. Plus all functions can be voice-activated. Rear seat-wise there’s very good legroom and space for standard size adults, but two are more comfortable therein for longer drives. The driving position immediately feels just right. Such feeling continues as you start that neat sounding, but rather quiet five-cylinder turbo-diesel. With147kW and peak torque of 470Nm from 1500rpm together with the wellspaced ratios of the co-operative 6-speed auto, the performance is always rewarding! That’s equally so from take-off, open road overtaking, towing and climbing hills. The electrically assisted power steering was very good in all driving conditions. It’s quick, with three turns lock to lock, and adjusts itself to be light and easy to

use at low speeds, then precise at higher speeds. Even when unladen, the open road ride and handling, including through tighter corners are decidedly civilised, and carlike. Of course there’s the occasional jiggle over ruts and bumps to remind you there’s a working chassis set up to cope with loads and rough-stuff below, but the overall refinement is such you can have to remind yourself its a ute you are driving! For carrying stuff the tray length is a decent size and very useful – just think of what you’ve spied on the back of Rangers over the holidays. We noted that a standard wooden pallet fits and modifies to allow three mountain bikes to be carried upright with tailgate (kept in place by tie-downs), slightly ajar. For the rough stuff, where the 237mm of ground clearance is a definite benefit, a turn of the rotary dial takes you from 2WD to 4WD High and Low. Then, when needed, you press another switch to electronically lock the rear diff. While there’s lots of standard safety gear and driver aids you will need to look at the top of the range Wild-trak if you want adaptive cruise, lane departure warning etc. Or perhaps even wait for the Raptor offroad performance version of the Ranger. Ford say it’s coming to NZ. Wonder if there’s any chance of the F-150-based Raptor’s 3.5-litre twin-turbo Ecoboost petrol engine, which puts out 336kW and 692Nm of torque and 10 speed auto, being an option?

FORD RANGER FX4 ■ ■

Cost: $65,390. Others from $47,940 to $69,640 plus ORCs) Engine: 3.2-litre direct injection fivecylinder turbo diesel, 147kW and 470Nm from 1500 to 2750rpm Transmission: Six-speed auto. Selectable all-wheel-drive. Transfer ratio 2.72:1. Dimensions: Length 5,351mm, wheelbase 3,220mm. Ground Clearance – Approach/Departure Angles: 237mm and 28/28 degrees respectively. Turning Circle: 12.4m. Warranty: 3 Year, 100,000Km. Safety: Rear view camera/parking sensors; front, side and curtain airbags, traction/stability, hill launch/descent and trailer sway controls. 5-star ANCAP rating.

FINALE The Ranger clearly is an very impressive allrounder. It drives, rides and accommodates people so comfortably, as well as carrying and towing whatever you want for both play and work. And does this so well, both on and off-road, you sometimes forget you are in a ute! Except, perhaps, when its 5.3-metre length challenges some of our local parking spaces.

Beautifully bespoke

T

he Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Bespoke department is an extraordinary collective of designers, engineers and craftspeople, who bring the marque’s discerning and influential patrons’ most ambitious and personal visions to reality. Today, almost every motor car that leaves the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England, is Bespoke. 2017 was the year that Rolls-Royce elevated Bespoke to unprecedented new levels, resulting in one of the most significant years for Bespoke in the 114-year history of the brand. What follows is a snapshot of some of the finest examples of Bespoke design and craftsmanship to be completed by the luxury house over the past 12 months.

Sweptail

Rolls-Royce ‘Sweptail’, the realisation of one customer’s coachbuilt dream. Premiered in 2017, ‘Sweptail’ is a compelling representation of true luxury, taking Bespoke coachbuildpersonalisation to new heights. The result of a collaboration between patron and artisan, Sweptail’s bold design embraces the marque’s heritage as

the world’s leading coachbuilder whilst reaffirming its pinnacle position in Bespoke personalisation. This automotive equivalent of Haute Couture draws on the lineage of 1920s and 1930s Rolls-Royce motor cars. The client’s vision was for a coachbuilt two seater coupé featuring a large panoramic glass roof. The result is a contemporary masterpiece. The grille, milled from solid aluminium, presents a distinct formality. The side profile of Sweptail defines its stately character, whilst the rear taper of the motor car pays homage to the world of racing yachts, shaping a completely new perception of a dramatic Rolls-Royce coupé. The elegant and characterising rear culminates in the registration number 08, milled from ingots of aluminium and hand polished to a mirror finish. ‘Sweptail’ is a personal, Bespoke, motor car like no other.

New Phantom and ‘The Gallery’ – An Art Gallery on Wheels

New Rolls-Royce Phantom was unveiled to global critical acclaim in 2017. At the heart of the motor car’s design aesthetic is The Gallery, a contemporary and luxury re-interpretation of a motor car’s dashboard and instrument panel. An application of glass runs uninterrupted across the fascia providing an unprecedented opportunity to present artwork, within your motor car. The Gallery is an innovation that furthers Rolls-Royce’s unparalleled Bespoke vision

and mastery of materials and craft.

Dawn and Wraith at Porto Cervo

Two unique motor cars were created in honour of the 2017 Rolls-Royce Summer Studio, Porto Cervo, Sardinia. A Bespoke Dawn drophead coupé and a Wraith Black Badge were commissioned to encapsulate the essence of this beguiling island. Dawn adopted a nautical theme, evoking emotions of a languid Mediterranean sojourn. The Porto Cervo motif, encrusted with genuine Sapphires and Mother of Pearl, is embedded into the front facia of the motor car. The navy blue and arctic white hues complement an expanse of teak, including the decking and floor. The Porto Cervo Wraith playfully emulates Sardinia’s night time ambience. A two-tone Diamond Black exterior is contrasted with gloss and matt paint applications, while black woven leather door panniers infer Wraith Black Badge’s dark and complex character, under the night sky.

Spirit of Calligraphy Ghost

A special one-off commission unveiled in Dubai in 2017, the Bespoke ‘Spirit of Calligraphy’ Ghost draws its design inspiration from the ancient art of Arabic calligraphy. Words are harmoniously moulded into shapes, creating a unique effect where texts and images become one. Sir Henry Royce’s resonant words “Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it”, in their Arabic form are shaped into Rolls-Royce’s flying mascot, the Spirit of Ecstasy. The calligraphy motif, created by renowned artist Khaled Al Saai, features as a silver inlay on the centre panel and as embroidery on the rear centre seat, amidst an eye-catching array of Turchese, Black and Arctic White leathers.

Elegance

Commissioned for an individual collector, the Ghost Elegance raised the bar of Bespoke by becoming the

first motor car to be finished in a paint infused with diamonds. Named Diamond Stardust, the unique paint incorporates 1000 diamonds crushed to form a very fine powder, giving the finished panels unmatched lustre and sparkle. The flanks of the motor car are highlighted with Mugello Red and Black twin coachlines, reflected inside with black leather seats and accents in Mugello Red, carried through stitching on the doors and piping on the seats. The detailed fascia of smooth open-pore Tudor Oak veneer is also complemented with a Mugello Red single stitch along the top of the dashboard, and finished with a Bespoke clock.

Dawn in Fuxia

In 2017, US collector Michael Fux was presented with his tenth Bespoke model from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Following a visit to Pebble Beach in 2016, where he collected a cluster of eyecatching fuchsia petals, he challenged the Bespoke team at Goodwood with a commission to bring a striking new colour to Dawn. Subsequently unveiled during The Quail automotive gathering in California, the vibrant Dawn in Fuxia represents the addition of another unique hue to the Rolls-Royce Colour Collection, and is reserved exclusively for Mr. Fux to use.

Dawn B50 for Hotel Byblos

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Hotel Byblos in Saint-Tropez in 2017, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars revealed the Dawn B50, a highly Bespoke and unique motor car inspired by the warmth and vibrancy of the Côte d’Azur. Commissioned by the Hotel Byblos as the automotive Jewel of Saint-Tropez, the Dawn B50 exudes two dominant exterior colours. The lustrous combination was developed exclusively to celebrate the hotel’s anniversary, along with bespoke door treadplates and a unique hand-painted coachline on each side bearing the B50 logo. The sophisticated interior takes inspiration from the intense Mediterranean sun, with vibrant tangerine tones that accentuate the dashboard and echo the stitching across the seat upholstery and floor mats.

Taking the battle to Tesla

F

isker has launched its Emotion electric luxury saloon at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week – and there’s a vegan option. The long-awaited Tesla rival, with eyecatching looks and dramatic butterfly doors, has a non-animal interior available for those who don’t want the premium leather interior of the show car. And it’s not just a pretty face. The Fisker offers cutting-edge EV technologies, most notably a 640km range and a top speed of 260km/h – although both

won’t be achievable at the same time. The Fisker Emotion is expected to be on sale in 2020 and to cost $US129,900. Size and performance-wise, the four-wheel-drive Emotion has plenty in common with Elon Musk’s four-door Tesla Model S, but the Fisker has a lot of carbon fibre and aluminium in its makeup so should be lighter than the popular American saloon that has become the benchmark for electric cars. In a separate CES display, Fisker is showing solid-state battery technology which it claims will be able to put a usable

range into an EV in just one minute. This tech, stated for release in 2020, could lift the Emotion’s single-charge range above 800km. Available in four- or five-seat formats, the Emotion has the same four upwardopening butterfly doors first revealed in the concept car in November 2016, which can be opened conventionally via flushfitting external handles, or remotely by smartphone. The Fisker Emotion also has level-four autonomy capability – which means the car can take complete control at all times

The Hyundai SUV Family

– courtesy of five LiDAR (Light Imaging Detecting And Ranging) sensors, the data of which can be processed by the Emotion’s software to provide real-time object classification and speed up the car’s responses. Inside, three screens will bombard the driver with information. They include a curved dash-top infotainment screen, an iPad-style device below in the centre console, and a third screen where the conventional dials would normally be. Production in the US will begin in 2019.

OUR VIEW

Water storage a dam problem Colin Williscroft SENIOR REPORTER

A

lthough we’ve had a bit of rain in recent weeks, the warm, dry start to summer has put real pressure on water supplies around the country. Given the amount of rain we receive it seems a crying shame that we let so much of it run down rivers and out to sea. Potential productivity going down the drain. Surely it would make more sense to capture that rainwater in winter when there’s plenty of it, then store it for use when it’s at more of a premium. Horticulture New Zealand certainly thinks so. Earlier this week its chief executive, Mike Chapman, said it was time to be more proactive in capturing and storing rain water to ensure sustainability of supply in times of drought. Chapman, who was discussing the benefits of dams, pointed out that not only would they provide a reliable water supply that was important for food production, they would also benefit streams and rivers by reducing flood risk and keeping flows up during dry periods, protecting aquatic life. However, he lamented the inconsistent policies across central and local government that are stemming the flow of storage proposals. It’s hard not to agree. Here in Mid Canterbury we’ve only got to look down the road to the Opuha dam in South Canterbury to see how valuable a resource a dam can be to a regional economy. Of course there are many forms of water storage, not all of which involve dams. Up the road from here, near Sheffield, Central Plains Water is in the process of filling a reservoir 10 metres deep and covering 30 hectares, while RDR has plans for a storage pond in Mid Canterbury that could hold the equivalent of 12,000 Olympic swimming pools. Unfortunately water storage has got caught up in the recent trend to paint anyone involved in water harvesting or irrigation as environmental vandals. It’s time that as a nation we took a deep breath, realised that storing water from times when it is plentiful for use when it is not, is common sense – and we need to remove as many barriers as possible that are stopping that from happening.

iSleepy – there’s a nap for that S

leep. I’m so good at it, I can do it with my eyes closed. I just don’t get enough of it. So, although I’m not really one for New Year’s resolutions, if I had to have one it would be to get more sleep. More and more I’m reading about how important a good night’s sleep is. Not only for the way you function the next day but also your long-term health, even weight loss. So I’ve done some research on how much sleep successful people are getting. There’s a fella Gates in the States who seems to be doing quite nicely thank you very much, so just how many ‘Zs’ is Bill stacking away each night? “Even though it’s fun to stay up all night, if I have to be creative I need seven hours,” the philanthropist and Microsoft cofounder told the Seattle Times. To start his days off right, he gets on the treadmill first thing in the morning. American Football superstar Tom Brady, the 40-year-old athlete, is usually early to bed, early to rise, averaging nine hours a night. “I think sleep is so important because I break my body down so much with my sport. It’s the only place to get the recovery that I need. There are so many people studying sleep now who realise that this is important; it’s not something you can skip for years and years and years and think you can get away with it.” Model Miranda Kerr. “There’s always so much to do, but it’s very important to get enough rest,” Kerr told Vogue.

To keep her sleep routine in check, the model uses the Sleep Cycle app. “The app tells me my average time in bed is seven hours. I’d really like to have eight hours but if I get that, it’s like, ‘Hallelujah!’” Jennifer Lopez has dubbed sleep her secret weapon to looking and feeling her best. She told OK! magazine that she always aims for eight hours a night and keeps her nightly routine simple and straightforward: “I think what works best for antiaging is sleep, water, and a good cleanser.” I don’t usually have too much trouble getting off to sleep at night. Getting up at 4am will do that to you. Usually the only times I can’t sleep are when it’s a really hot night, when my afternoon nana nap turned into a two-hour snore session or I have a lot going on the next day at work and I play it out all night long. I think I have found the answer to the last situation anyway and it is scientist-approved. It could be worth a crack if you have trouble getting off to sleep. Write out your next day’s to-do list. Psychologists at Baylor University in Texas decided to see if keeping a pre-bedtime journal influenced people’s ability to fall

LETTERS EMAIL US/WRITE US editor@theguardian.co.nz

PO Box 77 We welcome your letters and emails, but: asleep. In the study, half the participants were asked to write a completed list, describing everything they accomplished in the past few days. Jeez, some weeks that wouldn’t take long! The other half wrote a to-do list, laying out what they needed to remember to get done in the next few days. They found that people who wrote to-do lists before bed fell asleep nine minutes faster than the ones who wrote about what they had accomplished. In fact, the longer and more

specific their to-do lists were, the quicker people fell asleep. Oddly enough, the opposite was also true; people who wrote longer completed lists took longer to snooze. Some weeks my to-do list is that boring it would probably put me to sleep writing it. Till next week, hoo roo Phill Hooper – sleep expert. In brief

■ AUSTRALIA

Vegans attack meat industry Vegan activists have covered meat products with disturbing anti-meat stickers in some of Australia’s biggest supermarket chains. Many of the stickers, which have been spotted on meat for sale at some Woolworths and Coles stores, resemble the confronting health warnings found on cigarette packages. One features a photo of a diseased foot with the caption: “Meat consumption causes diabetes” while another has a photo of what appears to be heart surgery accompanied by the text: “Meat consumption causes heart disease”. Others come with a strong animal rights message. One sticker, which includes a distressing photo of a dead cow, comes with the slogan: “You can’t regulate violence. You can only abolish it” while another asks: “How can you be an animal lover and eat dead animals?” Both also include the pro-vegan website SavePoppy.com. According to The Daily Tel-

egraph, the global vegan group Anonymous for the Voiceless is responsible for the propaganda campaign. The group’s website claims it is “an animal rights organisation that specialises in street activism” which has carried out more than 2016 demonstrations in 376 cities and 56 countries.

New Zealand’s overheated housing market has slowed as Reserve Bank restrictions on more highly-leveraged mortgage lending and tighter credit criteria being demanded by banks made it more difficult for borrowers. - NZME

The group holds “an abolitionist stance on animal exploitation”. Kaj McBeth said he had helped produce the stickers, but denied placing them on the meat products. “The way I look at it, I am not doing anything illegal,” McBeth said. “Whether people want to

stick them in places is up to them, I am happy to facilitate that choice if you choose to make it.” While the stickers were found in only a few stores, neither Coles or Woolworths have taken kindly to the guerilla tactics, with both supermarket chains reportedly contacting police over the stickers. Unsurprisingly, the sticker campaign has divided the public. While it has been controversial among meat eaters, many vegans defended the message behind them. But a NSW Farmers Association spokesman told The Daily Telegraph the stickers were spreading misinformation. “Farmers in NSW adhere to the world’s best-practice animal welfare standards, and incorporating meat into a healthy, balanced diet is also recommended as part of the Australian Dietary Guidelines,” he said. According to Roy Morgan research, 10 per cent of New Zealanders now claim to eat an all or almost all vegetarian diet.- NZME

A devastating “text bomb” that crashes Apple devices has been uncovered by researchers. It works by sending iPhones, iPads and Macs into a frenzy after a malicious web address is opened in Apple’s Message app. The ChaiOS hack, which causes devices to crash and can delete all your messages, affects any device running iOS and Mac OS, according to the Daily Mail. A fix for the issue, which is not the first text bomb to hit Apple, has not yet been created but is expected in future updates. The flaw was discovered by software developer Abraham Masri, based in Chicago, who shared a link which can be used to crash the app on social media. This redirects the Messages app to a page stored on Github, a hosting service ford computer code, which exploits the bug. It does so through massively long strings of text information, which overloads the system. Reported effects include freezing, crashes, restarts and resprings, a process which takes about 10 seconds and returns you to the Lock Screen. Masri wrote a warning to accompany the link he shared on Twitter, “do not use it for bad stuff,” but it seems likely that pranksters and others will make use of the code for malicious purposes. Technology experts are calling on anyone who comes across the link to refrain from sending it to friends. Writing on his blog, award-winning computer security expert Graham Cluley said: “Something

about the so-called ChaiOS bug’s code gives your Apple device a brainstorm. “Ashamed about the mess it gets itself in, Messages decides the least embarrassing thing to do is to crash. “Nasty. But, thankfully, more of a nuisance than something that will lead to data being stolen from your computer or a malicious hacker being able to access your files. “Please don’t be tempted to try the text bomb attack out on anyone else – you’re not being funny, you’re just being a jerk.”

The vulnerability is similar to a bug called Effective Power which was first reported in May 2015. Malicious messages containing the word “Power” as well as Arabic and Marathi characters and the Chinese character meaning “redundant”, were sent out. They also crashed the Messages app, and if an iOS user received the text while their handset was locked the bug would force their phone to reboot. Social media users at the time complained of being repeatedly sent the message by mischievous friends. - NZME

In brief

■ TAURANGA

Mare back on the attack Group-performed mare Stylish Attack will make an overdue return at Tauranga today. After a combination of injuries and inclement weather ruled her out for the spring, a start in the Crockford Real Estate Open (1400m) will end a frustrating time for owner-trainer Graeme Hughes. “She was supposed to be racing in October, but she stood on a shoe in August and that took five weeks to come right,” the Cambridge horseman said yesterday. “Then she had another little issue and we had all the wet tracks after that. “She’s very well now and she trialled well. “They’ll know she’s there on Friday and whatever the weather does she needs to get out there and make a start.” Stylish Attack will be chasing a breakthrough black type victory having placings in the Gr.3 Eagle Technology Stakes (1600m) and the Gr.3 Cuddle Stakes (1600m) on her CV. “I’d like to take her down for the Wairarapa Breeders’ Stakes and have another crack at the Cuddle Stakes.” Stylish Attack also finished a close seventh in last season’s Gr.1 New Zealand Thorough-

Vincent pulled out A horror week for the elite of the All Stars team continued when Vincent was forced out of tomorrow night’s A$100,000 Ballarat Cup. Co-trainer Natalie Rasmussen pulled the Auckland Cup winner out of the race after he was found to have a bump on his leg. “He came out of the paddock with it and we don’t know how serious it is,” explains Rasmussen. “But we can’t risk him this week and we will have an ultrasound taken and then know more.” Rasmussen is hopeful Vincent can make it to the Chariots Of Fire on February 10. - HRNZ

Big double in sight Volpe Veloce hasn’t missed a beat as she bids to complete a prestigious sprinting double. The Foxwedge mare won the Railway at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day and she is the current pre-post favourite for Saturday’s Gr.1 JR & N Berkett Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham. “She’s bouncing and ready for battle,” said Gavin Parker, who trains Volpe Veloce at Matamata with Graham Richardson. “It’s a long way to go for us, but she’s always travelled well.” - NZME

Local options for top colt Stylish Attack looks set to add another win to her collection at Tauranga today. bred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m), a race on her autumn programme again. Stablemate Blue Shadow is also close to resuming on the

racetrack following a trial success in an open 1000m heat at Te Aroha on Tuesday. The Dalghar four-year-old hasn’t raced since she completed

a hat-trick of wins with a runaway victory at the expense of the stakes performers Mystery Show and Alamer at Te Rapa in June. - NZME

■ TRENTHAM

Sprinter poised to avenge Telegraph defeat Start Wondering has some unfinished business in tomorrow’s Gr.1 JR & N Berkett Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham. The Evan and JJ Rayner-trained gelding was nutted late by Signify in last year’s race, the nose defeat robbing him of a Group One treble, having flanked that performance with wins in the Railway (1200m) at Ellerslie and NRM Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa. “We thought he was home,” Evan Rayner lamented. “I said going into the race ‘the only thing that will beat him was a lightweight coming from behind’ and that’s exactly how it turned out.” Start Wondering has warmed up for his shot at Telegraph redemption with a second placing in the Listed Levin Stakes (1200m) and a brave last-start fourth in the Gr.1 Railway (1200m) on a deteriorating slow 8 track at Ellerslie. “He’s as well as we can have him. His work was good again this morning,” Rayner said. “We just hope there’s not too much rain in Wellington. “I was surprised how well he did go at Auckland. “We decided to run him because it would have been too long between races if we scratched. “He handled it far better than we expected. It was only when Johnathan [Parkes, jockey] let his

Pukekohe trainer Nigel Tiley will have a close look at the opposition at his local meeting next week before locking in the next step for Demonetization. “There’s the R75 mile or the three-year-old race over 1400m, I’ll have a look at the fields before I decide,” he said. “Going on this programme gave me the opportunity to give him an easy week.” Demonetization won the Auckland Guineas on New Year’s Day with his campaign revolving around a return for the Vodafone NZ Derby on March 3. - NZME

Sterner tests await 3YO Promising staying filly In The Clear has earned a return to black type racing. The daughter of Roc de Cambes was a luckless seventh in the Eulogy Stakes before a confidence-boosting win at Rotorua on Wednesday at the expense of the older horses. “It wasn’t a bad run in the Eulogy, she didn’t get a crack at them as she got held up,” said Debbie Sweeney, who trains with her father Graeme Sanders. “She’s a neat little filly, very tough and we’ll be looking at the threeyear-old fillies’ races now.” - NZME

Kiwi galloper wins Former Cambridge galloper Gasoline, who now races as Jade Theatre, has struck again in Hong Kong. The four-year-old was successful over 1200m at Happy Valley for trainer Manfred Man. “After he won last season, we expected he would win again for us, but he has been either badly drawn or hampered,” Man said. - NZME

Start Wondering head go to ride him out that he started floundering.” TAB bookmakers opened Start Wondering as a $7.20 fifth favourite for the Telegraph, with the Steve and Jo Gudsell-raced seven-year-old facing a possible tactics change after drawing barrier 14 in the 18-horse field. “I would have preferred a better draw but we’ll go ahead and run him and if the track does de-

teriorate, the wide draw might be more favourable,” Rayner said. “We’ll ride him a bit colder and have a late run at them. “We just think if we go forward from there, it would leave him wide open to being shot down late again. “We’re as confident as we can be. We’re very happy with him.” Rayner said safely through the Telegraph, Start Wonder-

ing would return to Te Rapa to defend his title in the Gr.1 NRM Sprint (1400m) on February 10 and while he was open to most options after that, another trip to Australia was off the table. “He hasn’t had a lot of racing so we’ll assess what’s available after Te Rapa but he won’t be going back to Australia again. “We’ve been there and done that now,” he said. - NZME

Bedford impresses Trainer Anthony Freedman produced the New Zealand-bred Bedford for a six-length win over 2000m at Caulfield. The Tavistock four-year-old streeted his rivals in the restricted race on Wednesday, which could force Freedman to reassess where he heads next. “He was impressive,” Freedman said. “He’s surprised us a bit. We’ll see if we can go to a better race and see how he stacks up.” - NZME

Mollie Gibson was in superb form at Lake Ruataniwha, picking up gold in the women’s single sculls.

■ ROWING

Gold at Ruataniwha By Matt MarkhaM

Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton rowers were right in the thick of the action at last weekend’s Canterbury Championships on Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel. In a combined effort between school squads and club rowers, the entire contingent walked away with five gold medals for their efforts as well as two silver medals and four of the bronze variety. Racing in hot conditions there was a good mix of the familiar faces and some new ones on the

water – netting good results all round. Rowing dynamo Veronica Wall led the charge on what must be one of her favourite pieces of water, winning not only the Under 19 Women’s Single Sculls but also the open women’s event as well. She went close to the perfect weekend but in the open women’s double sculls with Grace Wilson, but had to settle for second – beaten by New Zealand representatives Nicola Baker and Georgia Keech, who row out of the Central Rowing Performance Centre.

Mollie Gibson was in solid form as well winning gold in the Under 17 Women’s Single Sculls – winning her final by 20 seconds. Matthew Rae and Haxby Hefford were in on the action too, winning gold in the Men’s Club Double Sculls while Hefford picked up bronze in the Under 19 Men’s Single Sculls. Wyatt Burrows, Michael Wall, Jarred Matson and Gerard Wall claimed the fifth gold of the championship when they won the Men’s Intermediate Coxed Quad Sculls. Burrows and Michael Wall also

picked up a silver in the men’s intermediate double sculls. Other bronze medals went to Charlotte Cox in the women’s masters single sculls while the women’s open coxless quad sculls team of Wilson, Fran Connelly-Whyte and Olivia and Mollie Gibson also picked up bronze. All counted the contingent made 23 A finals over the course of the weekend – another incredible effort which puts them in good stead for the upcoming South Island Championships next weekend which will be held back on Lake Ruataniwha.

Move to France on the cards for Kaino All Blacks loose forward Jerome Kaino is being tipped to head to French rugby. Ruck.co.uk is reporting the 81-test All Black is expected to sign with Top 14 side Toulon, which could happen as early as this week. Toulon are seeking a replacement for Springboks number 8 Duane Vermeulen who will leave at the end of the season. Vermeulen will return to Super Rugby to prepare for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. “Vermeulen is leaving, he will be replaced by an international level player that we will announce in the next 48 hours,” Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal told French newspaper L’Equipe.

Kaino’s agent, Esportif’s Bruce Sharrock, confirmed late last year that daily discussions were on-going with Toulon. After returning from a stint in Japan in 2014, Kaino has played in the last four Super Rugby seasons with the Blues, but was yet to sign on past the 2018 campaign. Kaino told the Herald yesterday he was simply looking forward to getting back on the pitch in a Blues jersey. “There are a few options out there, but for me, my sole focus is to try and play well for the Blues and everything else will all into place. “Whatever happens happens in the future.” - NZME All Blacks great Jerome Kaino may be heading to France.

Eddie Jones will be given permission by the Rugby Football Union to coach the British and Irish Lions’ tour of South Africa, despite signing a new two-year contract extension to remain in his post as England head coach until 2021. Jones’ original contract, which was due to expire at the end of the World Cup in Japan next year, did not allow him to be available for last year’s Lions tour of New Zealand. However, the new deal, thought to be worth in the region of £750,000 per year, including bonuses, will leave the Australian free to be involved in the SA tour if asked by the Lions board, even if it is likely to require some sort of pre-tour sabbatical. Stephen Brown, the RFU chief executive, refused to disclose whether the contract extension contained a specific Lions clause but insisted it would not prevent Jones from being involved. “No, it wouldn’t prohibit him at all,” said Brown. “Bear in mind that we’re a quarter-shareholder in the Lions and we’ll have some say in that too. “Our view in that would be that if we’re planning for success, and we’ve come out of a very successful World Cup, and Eddie is the right coach for the Lions, the arrangement isn’t going to preclude that. “We’re not ruling it out. But it’s quite a way away and there are a lot of things to happen before then and it’s not entirely our say either. This is fundamentally about England, but no, it doesn’t preclude a Lions situation if it were to occur.” Jones, who also ruled himself out of involvement with last year’s Lions tour because of his desire to concentrate on his day job, would be the strong favourite to succeed Warren Gatland if England enjoy a successful World Cup. But the Australian said he is “not arrogant or presumptuous enough to think I would be offered the Lions role”. “It is not really part of my rugby history,” he said. “I would see that as being consequential of coaching well, so it is not something I really think about or worry about.” The contract extension for Jones is deserved reward for a remarkable run of results that has seen England win 22 out of 23 tests, including two Six Nations titles. It is also a key feature of a new succession plan announced by the RFU, which will see the governing body also appoint a head coach at the end of the 2019-20 season. Brown said it is critical for England to change the previous haphazard approach to appointing head coaches. “In the past we have tended to have this disruptive reset of our coaching teams at the end of every four-year cycle,” Brown said. “We wanted to avoid that and also have a smooth transition into the next head coach.” - PA

In brief Kyrgios v childhood hero Nick Kyrgios must stare down his childhood idol in a third-round blockbuster to keep his Australian Open dream alive. Having sauntered into the last 32 without dropping a set, Kyrgios faces his first major test of the Open today against flamboyant Frenchman JoWilfried Tsonga. A decade ago, when Tsonga was charging towards the 2008 final against Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios was a starry-eyed youngster in awe as he stalked the Ali-lookalike around Melbourne Park for autographs. “I was 12. I went to all his practice sessions with a new ball. He signed it every day,” Kyrgios recalled. - AAP

Konta latest shock loser By Darren Walton Johanna Konta is the latest heavyweight to crash out of the Australian Open women’s draw, with Britain’s big hope falling in the second round to American “lucky loser” Bernarda Pera. A quarter-finalist at the 2017 Open before reaching the last four at Wimbledon, Konta joined a raft of seeds to make an early Melbourne Park exit this week when she lost 6-4 7-5 yesterday. Pera lost her final-round qualifying match and only gained a late entry to the main draw for the first time in Melbourne following the withdrawal of Russian Margarita Gasparyan. But the world No.123 looked anything but of out place as she struck 26 winners, seven aces and converted four of 17 break-point chances to take the ninth-seeded Konta out in one hour and 40 minutes. Pera joins Thai surprise packet Luksika Kumkhum, 15-year-old Ukrainian sensation Marta Kostyuk and Czech Denisa Allertova to advance to the last 32 out of qualifying. The Croatian-born 23-yearold left-hander will play Czech 20th seed Barbora Strycova on Saturday for a place in the fourth round. Strycova beat Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena 6-3 6-4 in her secondround match. French eighth seed Caroline Garcia narrowly avoided elimination, battling back from a thirdset deficit to see off Czech Marketa Vondrousova 6-7 (3-7) 6-2

8-6 in a two-and-half-hour scrap played out in the searing earlyafternoon heat. Agnieszka Radwanska, the 26th seed from Poland, also survived a sapping three- setter, progressing with a 2-6 7-5 6-3 second-round win over Belarusian Lesia Tsurenko. Meanwhile Kiwi French Open doubles champion Michael Venus has been dumped out of the Australian Open doubles in the first round. Venus and partner Raven Klaasen, the eighth seeds, have been defeated 7-6(14), 7-6(4) by the pairing of Scott Lipsky and David Marrero. It is the second straight Grand Slam where Venus has been eliminated in the first round, following his 2017 defeat at the US Open. His pairing with South African veteran Klaasen had a solid start, making the semifinals at Auckland’s ASB Classic, but Lipsky and Marrero took out the key points against them yesterday. An epic 16-14 tiebreaker was edged by the unseeded pair, and the game again went to serve in the second set, before Lipsky and Marrero once more took out the tiebreaker to clinch a tight victory. Fellow Kiwi Artem Sitak is already through to the second round of the doubles, and he was joined by compatriot Marcus Daniell, who teamed up with Dominic Inglot to claim a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over Adil Shamasdin and Neal Skupski. Former champions Maria

Sharapova and Angelique Kerber will meet in a mouth-watering Australian Open third-round clash after hanging tough to record convincing wins in brutal conditions yesterday. Back in Melbourne for the first time since testing positive to the banned substance Meldonium two years ago, Sharapova was delighted at only needing two sets to oust Latvian counter-puncher Anastasija Sevastova. Kerber – who won her first major title at the 2016 Open – proved too good for Croatia’s Donna Vekic and won 6-4 6-1. The pair of of former world No.1s will meet in the round of 32 tomorrow, with reigning French Open champ Jelena Ostapenko the only other woman still alive in the women’s draw to have won a grand slam crown. After serving out her 15-month ban for doping, Sharapova’s much-hyped grand slam comeback was ended by Sevastova in a fourth-round epic at last year’s US Open. The pair met again in Sharapova’s next event in Beijing, with the five-time major champion taking the honours on that occasion in a match decided by a third-set tiebreak. This time around the Russian got the job done 6-1 7-6 (7-4) against the 14th seeded Latvian. “When she broke me back in the second set it was like ‘oh, it’s going to be three sets again’,” said Sharapova, who dominated the winners’ count 30-6. “She’s a tough opponent. “I knew I had to get off to a

good start because I didn’t do that on the previous two occasions. “I just wanted to get through today and I’m glad that I did.” Kerber remains unbeaten this year, having bounced back strongly from a disastrous 2017 campaign. “I really enjoyed being back in Australia,” said Kerber. “It’s my 30th birthday and it’s amazing how the time is going. “It’s good to win on my birthday and it’s always a tough match against Donna.” Karolina Pliskova escaped trouble on yet another day of carnage in the women’s draw. Sixth-seeded Pliskova romped into the third round with a 6-1 6-1 dismissal of Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, joining former champion Sharapova. Pilskova set up an all-Czech third-round affair with Lucie Safarova, a 6-2 6-4 winner over Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, . But third-seeded Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza and British ninth seed Johanna Konta crashed out with straightset defeats. Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei, the world No.88 coached by former Australian Open tournament director Paul McNamee, not only scuppered Muguruza’s Open hopes with her shock 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 victory. Hsieh also dashed Muguruza’s immediate prospects of regaining the world No.1 ranking with a Melbourne Park triumph. A former French Open and Wimbledon doubles champion, Hsieh will meet Agnieszka Radwanska in the next round. - AAP

Austrian fifth seed Dominic Thiem has fought back from two sets in arrears to out-muscle American qualifier Denis Kudla in a draining five-set classic at the Australian Open yesterday. The 24-yearold Thiem was staring down the barrel of a second-round boilover at the hands of the Kudla, ranked No.190 in the world, but found another gear to score a 6-7 (6-8) 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-3 win on Margaret Court Arena. The world No.5, who battled a viral infection at the Doha lead-up event, lifted his intensity after falling behind, slapping 34 winners to 19 in the final three sets. - AAP

Berdych battles on In a battle of the old stagers, Czech 19th-seed Tomas Berdych had too much firepower for Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and posted a 6-3 2-6 6-2 6-3 victory yesterday. American 13th seed Sam Querrey couldn’t progress to the Australian Open’s last 32 for a fifth time, with the 30-year-old upset 6-4 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 6-2 by 80th- ranked Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. Fellow countryman Tim Smyczek fared no better, with 21stseeded Spaniard Albert RamosVinolas dishing out a 6-4 6-2 7-6 (7-2) shellacking in a tick over two hours. - AAP

Phoenix brace for Jets After so far playing every minute of Wellington Phoenix’s A-League season, midfield mainstay Goran Paracki will miss tomorrow’s clash away with Newcastle Jets. The 30-year-old Croatian received his fifth yellow card of the season in Wellington’s 1-1 draw with Western Sydney Wanderers last weekend and will serve out his one-match suspension against the Jets. Phoenix coach Darije Kalezic says Paracki has been an integral part of Wellington’s season, but is confident his absence can be covered. - NZME

Walcott on the move Theo Walcott has joined Everton in a bid to revive his career after 12 years at Premier League rival Arsenal. Everton announced the signing of the 28-year-old winger yesterday. Financial details weren’t disclosed but he has reportedly moved for around 20 million pounds ($NZ28 million). Walcott, who scored 108 goals in 396 appearances for Arsenal, hasn’t been a first-choice pick for the past year and made the last of his 47 appearances for England in November 2016. - AP

IPL ‘not in our thinking’ The prospect of earning a lucrative Indian Premier League contract isn’t spurring on any of New Zealand’s in-form cricketers, insists opener Colin Munro. Black Caps players will be in the sights of the eight IPL franchises following their dominant form this home summer against the West Indies and Pakistan. Unbeaten in 11 straight matches across all formats, New Zealanders are among the form players in the international game, which should count for something at the IPL player auction on January 27-28. Munro, ranked the world’s best Twenty20 batsman, is among 30 Kiwis who have registered for the auction. However, he maintains it isn’t a factor in the dressing room, to the point that players don’t even joke about it when a team-mate unleashes a match-winning innings or bowling spell. “It’s about us just trying to play as well as we can for New Zealand. “Those types of things are just the cream on the top,” he said. “If you’re going out there trying to play for a deal overseas, it’s not going to work well for you in the long run.” Big-hitting left-hander Munro also towed the party line when asked about New Zealand’s record streak. It will extend to 15 if they win the dead rubber fifth ODI against Pakistan in Wellington today and

Illnesses to wicketkeeper Tim Paine and bowler Josh Hazlewood have opened the door for a pair of one-day international debuts against England at the Gabba today. Hazlewood has been sent home to recover from a virus, while Paine continued to struggle with gastro and isn’t certain of starting. After a maiden Big Bash hundred for the Strikers on Wednesday, wicketkeeper Alex Carey has been flown into camp as Australia look to level the five-match series at 1-1. Jhye Richardson is tipped to make his ODI debut. - AAP

Poms hammer Bangas England have moved to the top of their group at the under-19 Cricket World Cup after thumping Bangladesh by seven wickets. The victory in Queenstown, with more than 20 overs to spare, lifts the English to two-from-two and leaves them highly likely to qualify from group C. Seamer Ethan Bamber (3-19) and spinner Euan Woods (3-26) did the damage as Bangladesh were dismissed for 175. England cruised home courtesy of an unbeaten 102 from captain Harry Brook off 84 balls. - NZME

Bearing the Brunt

Colin Munro has become the master blaster for the Black Caps. then sweep the three-match T20I series against the struggling tourists. That would leave them behind just three winning streaks by the dominant Australian team of last decade. The record is 20 Australian wins in all formats in 2003. “You don’t play for those sort of accolades,” Munro said. “With this group of players, it’s

not about just going out there and winning. “It’s getting better and better in every game and raising that bar. If we can do that, then maybe that record is in good stead.” Pakistan face losing their 10th successive one-day international against the Black Caps in New Zealand, stretching back to 2011. Victory for New Zealand in the fifth ODI will clinch another se-

ries whitewash and equal the 12 successive home wins across the formats they achieved last summer against Pakistan, Bangladesh and Australia. “The team, the support staff and people around the country want to see us beat Pakistan 5-0. “The motivation is definitely there,” said opener Martin Guptill of the ‘dead rubber’ match. - NZME

Spirit of the game called into question The West Indies under-19 team are copping it from all sides after using a technicality to dismiss a South African batsman at the World Cup game in Mt Maunganui. Former Proteas wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, who had a 15-year test career, described the Windies junior team as “disgusting”. Former Australian captain Lisa Sthalekar reckoned: “I can’t believe what I am seeing.” Cricket greats Faf Du Plessis and Mitchell Johnson had a Twitter duel over the issue. South African Du Plessis described the dismissal as an “absolute joke” while Aussie quick Johnson said the law was the law. ESPN’s acclaimed CricInfo website stated that the “West Indies have once again ignited the spirit-of-cricket debate at the under-19 World Cup” after their captain/wicketkeeper Emmanuel Stewart appealed when South African opener Jiveshan Pillay picked up a stationary ball near the stumps to hand it to a fielder. Pillay touched the still ball with his bat, then threw it to Stewart who talked to the on-field umpires. Pillay was given out for ob-

Australian allrounder Ashleigh Gardner admits she had been rocked by a third concussion in less than a year while playing in the women’s Big Bash League. The hard-hitting Sydney Sixers’ star sat out two games after copping a ball to the grill of the helmet from English quick Katherine Brunt while playing Perth, after she had mistimed a pull shot. It was the second time Brunt had the better of her this summer, after also missing an Ashes onedayer for Australia in October after a similar incident. - AAP

Mills on target for Spurs Patty Mills has shot a career-high seven threes to contribute 25 points in San Antonio’s 100-95 NBA away win over Brooklyn. Mills had five-from-five three-pointers off the bench by half-time before finishing with a 70 shooting percentage at the Barclays Center yesterday. The Spurs notched their 30th win to maintain third spot in the Western Conference. - AAP

West Indian keeper/captain Emmanuel Stewart made a big call on the pitch. structing the field. The third umpire had ruled in the West Indies’ favour in accordance with the law which states: “Either batsman is out obstructing the field if, at any time while the ball is in play and, without the consent of a fielder, he/she uses the bat or any part of his/her person to return the ball to any fielder.” In 2016, the Windies under-19s were at the centre of controversy for using the mankad – when the bowler holds back a delivery to run out the non-striker – to win a

quarter-final game against Zimbabwe. The mankad rule has since been simplified and thus further confirmed as a legitimate dismissal of non-strikers who try to leave their station early. Leading West Indies commentator Ian Bishop, the former fast bowler, defended the juniors on that occasion, but he had far less sympathy this time. “This is an unfortunate issue,” Bishop said. “The batsman isn’t trying to gain an advantage. “He is not trying to being un-

fair. The umpires have done what they need to do. “The ball has stopped. It’s not threatening the stumps. “I don’t really necessarily feel as if that’s a good law. It could take a re-look. “I would have to have a deeper look at myself if I was the fielding captain. “Can I use some discretion here for the sake of the game and whatever the spirit of the game means? “I wouldn’t have gone that way.” - NZME

Carmelo Anthony scored 27 points to help the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Los Angeles Lakers 11490. Steven Adams had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Thunder. The Charlotte Hornets scored a record 77 points in the first half to beat the Washington Wizards 133-109. Jonas Valanciunas had 17 points and 16 rebounds and CJ Miles scored 21 points as Toronto beat Detroit 96-91. Klay Thompson scored 38 points as the Golden State Warriors beat the Chicago Bulls 119-112. - AAP

Ewan pipped at post Italian Elia Viviani has caught Australian Caleb Ewan napping to win stage three of the Tour Down Under. Ewan was well-placed inside the last few hundred metres of the 121km stage, but Viviani came around the inside and won easily. The stage was shortened by 26km because of the extreme 40plus degree conditions. - AAP

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Yours will be the last word – just how you like it. What you may not like is how long it takes for all of the other words to get spoken, bandied about, hashed and rehashed. That’s relationships! TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Etiquette allows for you to make the rules when it’s your party and follow their rules when it’s their party. The trouble arises when no one can agree on whose party it is. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): What you’re doing may be similar to what another person is doing. People can compare forever, but the two of you are not the same person. You’re unique. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It’s much easier to hear things than to say them. It’s easier to read words than it is to write them. It’s easier to observe than it is to do. How much easier? They won’t really know until they say, write and do. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Even when you’re extremely clear with your communication you can’t make another person understand. And if said “other person” happens to be the sort who doesn’t listen well, you’d be advised to move along. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Creativity isn’t always about art. It most often comes in other styles, forms and fields. It’s an approach and a mindset. It’s a way of being open to the world around you. You’ll have tons of creativity tonight. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You feel a kinship with a person that goes beyond the amount of time you’ve spent together or what you know about one another. It’s partly chemistry and partly spiritual. This doesn’t happen every day. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): They’ll ask for your opinion when they want something else entirely – for instance, your attention, your business, your love or your approval. You’re wise to this, of course. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The old world had gatekeepers. The new world has done away with them. As a result, you’ve become discerning and better at making decisions based on your personal values and taste. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ll be as unflappable as James Bond. You’ll maintain your composure when the heat is on and when the deadliest thing is boredom. In your constancy you’ll achieve the higher levels of grace. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): It may seem as though you are just one person competing among millions of similar people. But no one is you. When you do what only you can do, you have no competition. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Truth doesn’t really change, but the rules will. The ones that held yesterday may fall apart today. Also, there are different guidelines for different people. Get comfortable with the relativity of limits.

Rodman into rehab The agent for former NBA star Dennis Rodman says the Hall of Famer has checked into an alcohol rehabilitation centre after a weekend arrest for driving under the influence (DUI). Rodman’s agent, Darren Prince, said Rodman checked into Turning Point Rehabilitation Center to deal with his longtime struggle with alcoholism. Rodman was arrested in Southern California late on Saturday on suspicion of DUI after being pulled over for a traffic violation. Newport Beach police say Rodman failed field sobriety and breath tests.

‘Shoot the referees’

Braden Currie is part of a world-class field in the Red Bull Defiance in Wanaka this weekend.

Defending the Defiance BY MATT MARKHAM

MATT.M@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

New Zealand multisport champion and former Methven lad Braden Currie heads a stellar cast of athletes for this weekend’s Red Bull Defiance in Wanaka. Currie, who is three-time consecutive world multisport champion, played a role in the development of the showpiece event held each year and returns to his own backyard as the defending champion after winning the race last year with Josiah Middaugh. This year he combines with fellow multisport legend Dougal Allan to form a formidable combination. Red Bull Defiance is the first

event for 2018 for the former Mt Hutt College student and it comes off the back of a productive and, at times, testing 2017. He claimed victory in the Red Bull race 12 months ago, the Port of Tauranga half marathon, Ironman NZ and picked up his first major international ironman win in the Santa Cruz 70.3. He was runner-up in the Coast to Coast and the Taupo 70.3 and also finished third in the Asia Pacific Ironman Championships and the Ironman Asia Pacific. Currie’s results are impressive with a 55 per cent win ratio on events he competes in and a 78 per cent podium finish from the 61 races he has competed in. This weekend’s two-person,

Vincent injured, says Rasmussen P31

team, race sees athletes competing over eight high country stations in the heart of Central Otago in either elite or sports category divisions. The race is made up of a 71km moutain bike, a 39km run, a 40km kayak and a 60 metre abseil, traversing more than 5300 vertical metres of intense terrain. 350 competitors will take part in the weekend’s events in Wanaka that include the two day Red Bull Defiance, the Giant Minaret Burn MTB and the Torpedo7 Skyline Traverse. Twelve countries are represented across the field including Ireland, Sweden, USA, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Netherlands, and Australia.

Currie’s big-name combination is joined by a host of other leading contenders for the race with the likes of Courtney Atkinson, Elina Ussher, Marcel Hagener, Simone Maier, Sarah Fairmaid and Bob McLachlan competing. There will be plenty of keen eyes zoned in on the chances of McLachlan as he races with former All Black captain and rugby great, Richie McCaw. McCaw’s wife, Gemma is also competing and has teamed up with Bondi Beach television star and surf lifesaver, Andy Reid. The race begins tomorrow morning with competitors expected to arrive at the finish line on the waterfront in Wanaka on Sunday afternoon.

Doncaster Rovers manager Darren Ferguson has been charged for saying it would be a “good idea” to shoot referees after his side’s 1-1 draw against Plymouth. The 45-year-old was annoyed when Andy Baines ignored Rovers’ appeals for a penalty after James Coppinger went down in the box in the last minute of the clash. “The referees are part-time and the standard is appalling, their fitness levels are a disgrace, I’ve had enough of it,” Ferguson said after the game. “What can I do? Shoot them, it would be a good idea.”

Stokes eligible again England allrounder Ben Stokes has been cleared to resume his international career while he contests a charge of affray following a violent incident in September. Suspended by England while he was under investigation by police, the 26-year-old is now free to play for his country, having been charged by prosecutors with an offence that could lead to a jail term if he is convicted. “I can’t wait to get back out on a pitch with the 3 Lions on my chest and feeling that pride giving everything for the team.”
