Pasifika communities combi By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
All the Pacific Island communities came together for the first time at the inaugural Ashburton Pasifika Festival at the Hampstead Rugby Club on Saturday. Organiser Robert Tito said he believed it was the first time all the Pacific Island communities in the district had come together for a single festival. “Each of the communities have their own celebrations or get to-
gether throughout the year, but this was the first time all the Pacific Islanders have come together,” Tito said. “The response from each community was wonderful and it was great to see us all come together as one big Pacific Island community. “Being my first time organising something like this, we didn’t know what to expect, but we were all surprised and very happy at how it all went.” The free family-oriented event featured food and performances from the Samoan, Tongan, Fijian,

ine for cultural festival Cook Island and Tokelauan communities of the district. The only hiccup was the strong winds at the start of the day, Tito said, but once the wind settled down the tents went up for the flavours and festivities of the islands to take centre stage. Tito praised the groups that performed after having limited preparation in the lead-up to the event. The food stalls were kept busy and all sold out, he said, as the crowds fluctuated with people coming and going all day – includ-
ing Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown, Rangitata MP Jo Luxton and representatives from the Ministry for Pacific Peoples. After a successful first festival Tito said there had already been discussion about making next year’s event bigger and better. “Everyone had a great day out and they already have some ideas for next year Tito also thanked the event sponsors, Anzco and the Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network, and the volunteers who helped run the successful festival.

High temperatures had fire crews scrambling to extinguish a large blaze on Fords Road on Tuesday afternoon. As the district sweltered with a high of 39 degrees, firefighters responded to a large vegetation fire on Fords Road at around 12.30pm, with seven crews from the Ashburton, Hinds and Willowby volunteer fire brigades attending. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesman Brent Dunn said it was 100 metres of hedge and had spread into a neighbouring paddock covering around 120,000 square metres. “There were some high tension power lines above the tree-line so we had to wait for the power operator to turn the power off which affected our ability to fight the fire.” The fire had threatened nearby structures, but had been diverted away and by 3pm only four crews remained on site to dampen down any possible hot spots. Fenz suspended all permits across Canterbury – which is in a restricted fire season – and the upper South Island with immediate effect. FENZ response co-ordinator Colin Russell said with the high temperatures and strong winds forecast, cancelling the active fire permits reduced the potential for fires getting out of control, and is urging people to be extra vigilant around potential fire dangers. “Please, avoid any spark generating activities, like grinding and cutting metals outdoors, or using farm machinery. “Also check previous burn sites for hot embers and if you see a fire call 111 immediately,” Russell said. After hitting 37 degrees yesterday, temperatures in Ashburton were tipped to push over 30 again today before plummeting back to mid-teens tomorrow courtesy of a south-west change.

Local yarn under Biden’s feet When Joe Biden steps on to Air Force One, his feet are treading exclusive woollen yarn that started its journey in Ashburton. Air Force One, known as the President’s Office in the Sky, has 4000 feet of floor space, so it’s a generous area to fit-out with quality carpet made from the finest yarn sent from New Zealand. The starting point is Carrfields Limited in Ashburton, a family-owned national agri-business. Carrfields Primary Wool (CP Wool), which represents 3500 sheep farmers, supplies wool from New Zealand Yarn in Christchurch to carpet and rug makers in the United States, destined for the high-end market. Clients range from the White House Military Office which runs Air Force One and Two to luxury office spaces and private homes around the world. Carpet made from CP Wool yarn can also be found in Emirates first class cabins, Gulfstream private jets, Wells Fargo, American Express, J.P. Morgan and Time Warner head offices, the London Stock Exchange’s New York outpost and Tom Ford’s retail store in Milan. Group manager, marketing and communications, Shelley Donnelly, explained that Carrfields moved from low value, high volume to low volume, high value yarn and the decision “has been challenging, but successful” for the company. “From Ashburton in New Zealand, we have a footprint in the world, an ingredient in the reci-

Keen to find his customers a cheaper power source About 200 Mid Canterbury electricity users are saving around $100,000 annually. As a result of an EA Networks initiative last year, users checked out their best deal from the website PowerSwitch.org.nz, run and managed by Consumer NZ. The website allows power consumers to enter their information and then tells them who they should switch to and how much they will save. As a result, 200 consumers completed the exercise and discovered they could get a better deal elsewhere. EA Network’s decision to alert people resulted from a 14 per cent reduction it passed on to consumers last year. The power company, a co-operative, owned by Mid Canterbury customers, owns the poles, underground cables and substations that keeps the power flowing around the district. It then sells power to the retailers who bill the users. While EA Networks reduced its costs, it became aware that many electricity retailers didn’t do the same. “We were frustrated that retailers didn’t respond to our initiative,” EA Networks’ CEO, Roger Sutton, said. According to the government agency (MBIE) that monitors electricity prices, the margins that electricity retailers make in
Mid Canterbury from residential customers are amongst the highest in the country. “We didn’t think that was very fair and led us to look at how much customers would save by switching retailers,” Sutton said. Firstly, EA Networks tried out the idea on its own employees. “The results were very surprising. Some of our staff who’d been with the same retailer for many years, could save $700 annually just by switching,” Sutton commented. “These were residential customers who used about the average amount of energy.” One staff member talked to their local hairdresser who had a monthly bill of $100. By switching she will save nearly $300 a year. Sutton points out that customers who saved the most had been loyal to one retailer over many years. “These electricity retailers are making massive profits from these passive customers. They try and confuse customers by adding discounts to make it look like they’re getting a good deal. But often these discounts are discounts off a very high price,” he explained. “Finding the cheapest electricity retailer isn’t hard. PowerSwitch.org.nz is easy to use and

RUGBY
Celtic cheer as camp plans for 2021 By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
New coaches, same ethos. The Celtic women’s rugby squad is building something at the moment and the team is upbeat about where its heading. The sole Mid Canterbury women’s club team began pre-season training at Celtic RFC last week with a healthy turnout for its first pow-wow of the year. However club coaches have reiterated there is always room for more player prospects as they look to improve their fortunes on the paddock. A total of 18 players enjoyed a tune-up during Thursday’s session. It will be the third season for the Ashburton club team who have been bolstered by a new coach and management quartet of Tony “Spud” Kerr, Sandy Lysaght, Danielle McKain and Breffni O’Reilly. McKain is essentially trading places with husband Nick, who is stepping to the side so he can focus on senior rugby. “Last year was the first year I had involvement because Nick was coaching,” she said. “It was incredible, it’s not just the game of rugby, there are huge support networks that have come out of this team.” The growth among the group began to manifest on the park last season. Although the largely inexperienced team was unable to garner success on the scoreboard in the Canstaff Women’s Championship earlier in the year, it later wrangled an impressive tournament win at the South Canterbury Club 7s in November. “From the first game of the season to the last game of the season, totally different

team,” McKain said. “We had opposition teams coming up to us at the end saying ‘whoa, we didn’t expect that, you’re like a whole another team’.” Although new personnel were taking the management reins, McKain said it would be a continuation of the groundwork laid during the previous two years. An increase of its playing stocks however was a key focus. “We want to get more and more women involved. “Giving women something for them to do. “It gives them fitness and a bit of confidence.”
Sasha Ritchie makes a pass during a game of touch on Thursday. In putting the call out to new players, the club said it was tailor-made for “mums” or girls who wanted to try their hand, but were apprehensive about the physical aspect. The current squad had players ranging from ages 19-48. “It can be a bit intimidating y’know,”
210121-AB-3156
McKain said. “It is contact, so it’s a bit scary, but it’s for anyone. We just want to get everyone and anyone involved. “We learn how to go into the contact and move with it and keep yourself safe.” Celtic trainings are held at the club grounds on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Young farmers ready to tackle national contest By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury lower-order sharemilker Jesse Wilde will hope it is third time lucky when he and seven other competitors line up for the Aorangi FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition in Methven in March. Wilde has qualified for two Aorangi regional finals previously, but never competed because of the event being cancelled last year and his wedding taking priority in 2019. The Aorangi regional final includes a strong Mid Canterbury contingent, with four of the eight competitors coming from the district. The Aorangi and Tasman Young Farmer of the Year regional finals will be held on consecutive weekends in March. The Aorangi regional final’s practical day is again scheduled to be held in conjunction with the Methven A&P Show on March 20, after both events were cancelled at the last minute in 2020 in response to Covid-19 restrictions. After battling it out at the practical day, the competitors will then go head-to-head in a quiz at
the evening show at Mt Hutt Memorial Hall, Methven. The Aorangi competitors are: Dale McAlwee (Pendarves YFC), Lachlan Angland (Pendarves), Jesse Wilde (Hinds), James Sinclair (Foothills), Adam Judd (Timaru), William Guerin (Mackenzie), Jason Erasmus (Mackenzie) and Vanessa Bragan (Mackenzie). Wilde (29) and his wife Nicole milk 900 cows as lower-order sharemilkers for Askin Plains Dairy at Ealing and have been on the farm for five seasons. The property has recovered after the initial herd they managed had to be culled after being confirmed with cattle disease mycoplasma bovis in the 2018-19 season. Wilde, who has a BAgCom from Lincoln University worked his way up from farm assistant to second in charge, to farm manager. An arable farmer and senior operator Lachlan Angland (27) is involved with managing 1000 hectares of crops near Dorie, ranging from feed cereals, milling wheat, peas and small seeds to vegetables including onions, carrots and potatoes. His role involves conventional drilling, fertiliser application, and operating harvesting machines and combines. After completing a BAg at
Lincoln University, he spent two seasons harvesting on a United States wheat belt from Texas to North Dakota and working on a progressive cropping farm near Swindon in the United Kingdom. Angland aims to work his way up to a farm manager and eventually farm ownership. This is his second time competing and his first regional final.
driving combine harvesters from Arizona to North Dakota. Now in his third season at Singletree, McAlwee’s goal is farm ownership, with plans to get into contract milking, then sharemilking. Stock manager James Sinclair (26) has been on Hakatere Station in the Mid Canterbury high country for almost two years. He grew up in Te Anau and went on
After battling it out at the practical day, the competitors will then go head-to-head in a quiz at the evening show Assistant manager at Singletree Dairies, Newland, Dale McAlwee (26) and his 11 colleagues milk 2500 cows on 600 hectares. Growing up on a sheep and beef farm in South Canterbury, McAlwee completed a BAgSci at Lincoln University. While studying, he spent summers working on a large-scale Canterbury crop and process vegetable farm as well as harvesting in Australia. He also spent a year harvesting in the US,
to complete a two-year cadetship at Telford where he gained practical experience as well as a diploma in farm management. He has a range of experience working on different stations around the South Island. This will be Sinclair’s first regional final after competing in two district contests. Aorangi regional final convener Todd McConnell is from a family farm in Mid Canterbury
which has transitioned from predominately sheep to now almost entirely dairy. McConnell now works as a bulk truck driver servicing the arable and horticultural sectors. Wanting to make the Aorangi regional final a unique experience, he enjoys organising events and developing ideas. “My hopes are to showcase the region and challenge competitors in new ways,” McConnell said. “I’m looking forward to working with stakeholders from all areas of the industry and Young Farmers. I’m excited to see it all come together, particularly the head-to-heads.” The Tasman regional final will be held on March 27 in conjunction with the Malvern A&P Show at the Sheffield Domain, followed by an evening show at the Darfield Recreation and Social Centre. Tasman FMG Young Farmer of the Year competitors are: Roshean Woods (Christchurch City YFC), Shaun Snoxell (Christchurch City) Jonny Brown (Dunsandel), Liam Alley (Dunsandel), Peter O’Connor (Lincoln), Jack Taggart (Lincoln), Jeremy Kilgour (Lincoln) and Dean Gardiner (Amuri).

Wednesday, January 27, 2021 Ashburton Guardian NORTHLAND COVID-19
Close contacts return negative test results The Ministry of Health has revealed that 15 close contacts of the Northland community case have returned negative test results, including a household contact of the case. An additional close contact is awaiting their test result. Sixteen people were identified as potential close contacts. A total of 157 staff from the managed isolation facility at the Pullman Hotel have been tested, along with 192 guests currently in the facility. The Ministry of Health says of those, 30 still have test results to come, and all others have returned negative tests. Contact tracing staff are following up with 357 people who departed the managed isolation facility between January 9 and 24. Of that number, 325 have been contacted, are in isolation and have been or are being tested. The remaining former guests were being followed up yesterday. One hundred and eighty-seven people received a push notification as a result of having scanned into one of 31 locations of interest. A further location was added on Monday and is on the Ministry’s website. At this time 154 people have been identified
as ‘casual plus’ contacts, as a result of either the push notification or after speaking with Healthline following media publicity. These people are being tested and are isolating until they receive their result. The source investigation into how the Northland case was infected continued yesterday at the managed isolation facility. This includes reviewing
CCTV footage at the facility and looking at whether the infection may have occurred from person-to-person or surface transmission, or airborne transmission, including possibly the ventilation system. Two new cases in managed isolation were reported yesterday one is a person who arrived in New Zealand on a direct flight from Japan and the other flew from Portugal, via the UAE
and Malaysia. Both positive tests were carried out in Auckland on day zero routine testing. One previously reported case has now recovered, bringing the total number of active cases in New Zealand to 65. New Zealand’s total number of confirmed cases is 1934. The total number of tests processed by laboratories to date is 1,493,495.
Inequality rears its ugly head among pupils Many students will start the school year next week without shoes, an empty tummy and dirty clothes. Schools say this has been exacerbated by Covid-19 and there are a myriad of challenges faced by children living in poverty. At Whangarei Primary School, some children arrive at school in oversized shoes or do not even have shoes. Its learning support co-ordinator Kim Tavinor said she had seen the impacts first-hand. “When it comes to turning up in school, we’ve got kids in the
middle of winter turning up in skinny little clothes, basically T-shirts and shorts, nothing on their feet, no jackets they turn up wet because they walk to school,” she said. “Often they don’t have bags because they have nothing to put in them because they don’t have any lunch, no breakfast.” This is not a new problem, but Tavinor said it became worse as the lockdowns hit. “We’ve got parents that obviously lost their jobs, we’ve got other parents who, like there might’ve been two family [members] working and now
they’re down to one, plus we’ve had lots of families that were obviously put on the subsidy.” At the other end of the country, Invercargill Middle School principal Sarah Read said even arriving at school became a challenge for some children. “There were some that struggled to get to school firstly, ‘cause they were really worried about Covid and getting it for their kids so they didn’t want to send them back. There were others that had lost their jobs so didn’t have a lot of income and they were out trying to find work and kids were at home
helping look after little people.” New research from Colmar Brunton, commissioned by KidsCan, has found children at decile 1-4 schools, who are the worst off socially and economically, face a big hurdle in getting their basic needs met. The research found principals were buying togs and towels from second-hand shops so kids could go to swimming lessons. One intermediate teacher told researchers kids said they had not eaten in days or were getting “pink soup” – the water cheerios were cooked in.

Process ‘stifled complaints’ A teacher says the Ministry of Education made it hard for staff to complain about the owner of a Feilding childcare centre who is alleged to have mistreated children for years. The Ministry’s complaints process would refer all complaints straight back to the owner of The Pitter Patter Education Centre. The centre had its licence suspended for three weeks in November after complaints that toddlers would be smacked, locked in rooms as punishment, and fed mouldy food. The Ministry of Education launched an investigation into Feilding’s Pitter Patter Childcare Centre in December after more than 17 former staff and parents complained that the owner was violent to children. The centre re-opened after its suspension on the condition that the owner and manager, Pauline Murphy, stayed away. In some of the complaints former staff said the manager would grab children’s wrists and yank them so hard staff were worried they would be dislocated. One former teacher, who RNZ agreed not to name, said Pauline Murphy would threaten staff with warnings for comforting or cuddling hurt children. She said Murphy would also use dangerous methods to treat children for headlice. “On some occasions many of us were witness to Pauline pouring disinfectant over children’s heads as they stood on a small stool and have their heads over the basin to treat them for headlice.” She said teachers would try to complain to the Ministry of Education (MOE), but confronted a system that demanded the initial complaint must be dealt with through the internal procedure first. In this case the process was to complain to the owner and manager at the centre – the very woman they wanted to raise concerns about. “Many teachers wanted to say something, but as the complaints procedure was to in the first instance go to the centre manager, they couldn’t go to Pauline as she just swept complaints under the rug and then you were bullied and your job threatened for doing so. “If you did, then you were reprimanded and nothing happened to your complaint. MOE were not interested in your complaint if you had not followed this.”

Weather – the great conversation starter By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
W
hat is it about the weather that seems to get everyone excited? There’s something about the weather that seems to polarise people. Especially when the threat or promise of something a little out of the ordinary is on the horizon. On Monday, every conversation I seemed to have with someone went the same way. “Beautiful day out there, isn’t it,” I’d say. “Sure is, but gee it’s going to be 36 on Tuesday – how’s that for heat,” they’d reply. Then yesterday, the storyline went full circle. “Pretty hot out there,” I’d suggest – as though the person I was speaking to had absolutely no idea. “Yes, it is – but have you seen it’s going to rain on Thursday?” was the general response or reaction I seemed to get. It’s as if we’ve never had a hot day in our lives, we tend to react with unbridled enthusiasm about something which will give us a point of conversation with people. Yet, it is summer after all, isn’t it supposed to get hot? What always makes it more entertaining however is that forecasters are usually off the mark – they might think something’s going to happen, but the little bit of variance is usually enough to change it from an extreme event into just another normal day – making all the niceties you’ve been exuding redundant, anyway. Winter is the same too. In fact, winter months create even more enthusiasm with the possibility of a dumping of snow enough to bring out even the biggest children at heart in terms of excitement levels. Of course, those excitement levels are usually reduced to frustration and disappointment when the magical white powder doesn’t come. It is great though that we’ve got such an easy and common conversation starter to use when speaking with people. Especially if you’re like me and it takes a minute or two to remember someone’s name – it’s the best stalling tactic until the brain ticks over. It’s pretty hot out there as I write this on Tuesday afternoon. But did you see that it’s only going to be 22 on the weekend when we’re not stuck at work? That might be a conversation for another day.

OPINION 11
Reducing the fire risk in rural areas this summer W
e have all seen on our television screens the risks posed by poor management of vegetation on rural land in recent years. The Lake Ohau blaze that destroyed 48 homes, charred Department of Conservation land that had been ungrazed, the Port Hills fires (2017 and 2020) that saw residents fleeing and the death of a helicopter pilot working to control the flames . . . Little wonder then that Fire and Emergency New Zealand is putting a big focus on risk reduction. The organisation was established in 2017 and its mandate is much broader than its predecessors. Its risk reduction strategy targets risk in our natural and built environment to protect life, property, and our community. We’re now in the season when mistakes in dry rural areas can have major consequences. Summer is an arable farmer’s favourite time of the year. It’s when they can be out in their harvesters day and night, harvesting the fruits of many months’ labour.
By Philippa Rawlinson FROM THE FARM They like the days to be long, hot and dry, but unfortunately that’s exactly the conditions that put the risk of wildfires, uncontrolled or unexpected fires into the ‘high’ or even ‘extreme’ bands. While it may be perverse, farmers use fire as a land management tool to reduce the risk of uncontrolled blazes. For arable farmers, crop residue burning is used at the height of the fire season (February through until April) to reduce fire fuel loads (dry vegetation) and prepare paddocks for planting the next crop. Cereal crops add to the fire fuel load in rural areas. Harvested dry straw and material left in the paddock is extremely combustible. Even standing crop waiting to be harvested is combustible and
farmers may often have a water tanker or even plough a break around the paddock after the first round in case the header or other farm machinery creates a fire. This fire break protects any unharvested crops and property from the risks posed by unwanted fire. Preparation of paddocks for the following crop can be time critical for an arable farmer as autumn planting of cereal crops can be much more beneficial than traditional spring planting. That is, if the right weather windows prevail. Crop residue burning is used to remove weeds, pests and diseases from the seed bed. To be able to undertake fire as a land management tool over the summer months, farmers need to apply for a permit from Fire and Emergency New Zealand. In the application farmers will submit such information as the intended paddock to be burned and drop a pin marking the burn location on a map. As part of this permit process, farmers will need to adhere to a series of criteria designed to
reduce the risk of fire escape, such as not burning when winds are over 15km/h. To further reduce the risk of fire escape, some farmers will have fire-fighting equipment on hand such as their own portable water tanker. Canterbury farmers also need to complete a smoke management plan as part of their obligations to Environment Canterbury’s Air Regional Plan. The smoke management plan describes activities farmers undertake to manage, to the best of their ability, the discharge of smoke in the environment. Those living within five kilometres of Ashburton or Timaru need to go one step further and apply to Environment Canterbury for a consent to undertake the burn. There are other means of reducing fuel loads and preparing paddocks for the next crop. Some farmers will cultivate paddocks numerous times while others will direct drill into post-harvest residue. Direct drilling reduces soil carbon loss, a bonus for our efforts
to tackle global warming. However, these methods are not for everyone and individual farmers will have their own drivers for the decisions that they are making. Farmers recognise that the use of fire as a land management tool is a privilege and not a right, so will be doing their best to follow the rules in place to mitigate the risks posed by fire as a land management tool. This summer, when you see a crop residue burn being undertaken remember it is being used as a land management tool to reduce the risks posed by unwanted wildfire which may pose a risk to life, property and other infrastructure. eputation and results are key to a business’ survival and, for Spiderban, their survival is effective termination. Sticking to their motto of ‘friendly services and care with clean, excellent results’ the business has had such steady annual growth that they needed to open an office space in Tinwald. Spiderban owners Mike and Maria Ward moved into new premises in the Tinwald shopping centre at the weekend. “We were operating out of our house to start off and then moved into the garage as we expanded,” Mike said. “Things were getting a bit cramped and the two big rooms in the garage just weren’t enough so we have opened up an office.” Outgrowing the space was a good problem to have, especially when they celebrated 25 years in business at the end of 2020.
Public profile The office on State Highway 1 now provides a public profile to work alongside the word of mouth that has served them well so far. “People only ever used to deal with us over the phone, but now they can come in and meet us and deal with us face-to-face,” Maria said. The pest control business takes care of your pest problems, especially spiders, flies, ants and rodents in dwellings or commercial buildings, and service from Rakaia to Southland with their three fulltime technicians.
the ground area, while other companies only put a barrier round the house and spray the webs. “We do the whole house, top to bottom. “We use about 12 litres of product on each house and our product is far superior to what is available on the shelf and it has longevity as we also give a minimum of a 12-month warranty. “When we send out a reminder to customers each year, the majority don’t call us back because it’s still working from the previous year, so most customers get a treatment every two years.” Mike said they do a lot of customers’ holiday homes and farm houses, and having the ability to use Ruralco is a big benefit. Spray season begins in October and goes through until the end of May, then in June and July, Spiderban changes its business to cleaning down dairy sheds.
Non-invasive Spiderban prides itself on the treatment being so non-invasive that customers question whether they have been at all as their treatment doesn’t smell, doesn’t leave runs and no mess. “There are a lot of things in people’s cupboards they use that are worse than what we use,” Mike said.

The silver lining
t’s hard to imagine that shattering your leg in a motorcycle crash could be a silver lining, but that is how Mike and Maria described it. Mike was injured in a motorbike accident in September and is currently in a wheelchair while his shattered leg heals, likely spending another 10 months in a wheelchair. They had started planning to open an office early last year, but the accident meant Mike had to take a back seat from being a technician and handling the administration to focus on being the managing director. Mike started Spiderban in 1995 in North Canterbury, now controlled by Brian and Rose Walker, and then moved to the Tasman area, now managed by John Sigglekow, while Mike now operates from Mid Canterbury, Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, Queenstown and right down to Invercargill. Up until September, Mike was working as one of the three technicians. Opening the office means they have added an administrator to handle bookings, with Maria handling the accounts, and they have brought on a third technician in place of Mike.

Champion young farmer moves to Ashburton NEW START
Fresh from winning the Taranaki Manawatu FMG Young Farmer of the Year regional final in the weekend, Jake Jarman is about to start a new role in Ashburton. First-time competitor Jake Jarman (23) not only took out the Taranaki Manawatu regional title and became the first competitor of the season to qualify for the grand final, but he also won the most points in all four contest strainers. Starting a new role as an ANZ relationship associate in Ashburton this week, Jarman beat two-time regional winner and grand final qualifier James Lawn, who came second. DairyNZ consulting officer and the region’s Young Farmers’ chair, Kate Stewart (24) was third. Speaking of his win, Jarman said he was overwhelmed to have come out on top. “Being a first-time competitor might’ve played into my favour as I just didn’t know what to expect. “I wasn’t too worked up about any one particular aspect, I just thought I’d

give it a go, try my best and see what came of it,” he said. With the contest based around four strainers – technology and innovation, environment, people, food – Jarman was grateful to have been consistent across all four. “Working to a time pressure and making sure you tick everything off that you could while still doing it to a high standard was the big challenge,” he said. “The head-to-heads where that was the most critical part, were the most enjoyable because we all competed at the same time, all our supporters were right there and you got to appreciate how much you’d done when the whistle went at the end and compare with everyone else.” Before accepting the role with ANZ, Jarman was a part-time researcher for Dairy Trust Taranaki and worked part time on the family dairy farm in Inglewood. He holds a B AgCom from Lincoln University and a masters in agricul-
tural science from Massey University. He was looking forward to creating a rigorous training plan to prepare for the grand final in July, but also wanted to enjoy it at the same time. “I just loved Friday and Saturday and that’s what made competing so much fun, I just genuinely enjoyed doing the modules, head-to-heads and getting to know the other competitors,” he said of the regional final, held at Awapuni racecourse, Palmerston North. The 53rd season of the contest was much awaited following the 2020 season cancellation, the first time in the contest’s history. Young Farmers’ chief executive Lynda Coppersmith said the 2021 FMG Young Farmer of the Year had so far been one of the fiercest seasons yet. “The level of competition this year is absolutely outstanding. We have some seriously talented members in our ranks and it is a privilege to watch them all represent the food and fibre sector and grow as young farmers.”

MILKING SHEEP
It’s easier than you think Sheep Milk New Zealand and Strathclyde Stud are holding a sheep milk open day on Thursday, February 4 at Kirwee, with industry speakers and milking demonstrations. It is estimations of an industry capable of generating $250 million in sheep milk export products by 2024 that have North Island conversions already generating profitable returns. Well known Mid Cantabrians, Matt and Tracey Jones started with farming East Friesians in 2011, and established Strathclyde Stud in 2012 after a career in traditional sheep farming practices. “To get it right, we visited sheep milk farms in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Switzerland and The Netherlands to evaluate breeds and farming methods for best practice and milk production, and found East Friesians are internationally considered the best breed for milking. “Sheep offer flexibility, so it wasn’t difficult to begin a milking herd alongside our wool and meat breeds. They are cleaner to milk, have less effluent, are easier on grazing and require less water,” said Matt Jones.
With stringent new dairy farm regulations for fencing, caps on the use of nitrates for fertilisation, reporting, and exclusion of dairy cattle from wetlands and rivers, sheep farming, and sheep milk production provide a significantly reduced impact on the environment which equates to less dollars spent mitigating that impact for the farmer. Sheep milk is proving itself to be a nutritional powerhouse and the go to alternative for people with gut health issues and dairy intolerances. Easily digestible, with higher essential amino acids than cow’s milk, sheep milk has been providing a plethora of health benefits. According to Jones, “It is the best, cleanest A2 milk there is. “It doesn’t require chemical processing like the current lactose-free options which makes it a great fit not only for local markets but also for Asian markets. “We began commercial milking in 2019 and now we are in the process of breeding an outdoor animal that produces 100 milk solids in lactation. “It’s really a giant leap from the
Matt and Tracey Jones. 57 national average.” Drawing on the Lacaune breed for udder confirmation and increased let-down time and the Maech Tete Rousse and Assaf breeds for hardiness, the Jones’ are working with Ian McDougal of Farmgene, an international
geneticist specialising in artificial breeding. “We have an established partnership with Strathclyde with available embryos and semen imported from the UK,” says McDougal. To hear more from industry ex-
perts, register for the Sheep Milk New Zealand and Strathclyde Stud open day by phoning or registering at sheepmilknz.co.nz The open day will begin at 1 pm on Thursday, February 4 at Tuscany Downs, 2817 West Coast Road, Kirwee.
BASE MILK PRICE
Synlait lifts forecast milk prices Synlait Milk has lifted its forecast base milk price for the 2020/2021 season by 80 cents to $7.20 a kg of milksolids. Synlait’s decision to increase its forecast base milk price from $6.40 was driven by the strong increase in dairy commodity prices over recent months, and the company’s view that commodity prices are likely to remain around current levels for the remainder of the milk season.
Synlait’s national milk supply manager David Williams said that despite the wider global uncertainty, dairy commodity prices had remained robust and a higher forecast base milk price would be welcomed by Synlait’s farmer suppliers. “We are grateful for their continued support.” Synlait would continue to monitor movements and keep its farmer suppliers updated, with
its next milk price announcement in May. In December, Fonterra lifted its forecast farmgate milk price range up to $6.70 to $7.30 per kgMS. This put its midpoint at $7kg/ MS. The Global Dairy Trade index rose 4.8 per cent last week in the second auction of January and has now risen 17 per cent over the last three months.
Price gains were spread across a range of product categories. Bank economists are also positive about dairy’s prospects, with Westpac adding 50 cents to its forecast payout price, which is now $7.50.
ASB said that all indicators continued to suggest demand for dairy products was likely to hold up well, through to the end of the season, with solid purchases from China anchoring price gains at recent auctions. Supply had also tightened, with drought hitting parts of the upper North Island. Globally, production in the EU was also falling, led by lower volumes in France and Germany.

Ward best of back markers
It was another day for the back markers in Tinwald Cycling Club’s Dean Cooksley Memorial, 45km handicap event around the Methven block on Sunday. With growing winds and rising temperatures, the scratch trio powered their way through the field to find the front of the race in the final 7km. Tony Ward had the best of the charge to the line to clinch victory and also claim the fastest time, riding the course in 68 minutes 50 seconds. A solid performance from Larry Neal ensured he was the next best, finishing second on the podium. Kyle Grey was also in the thick of the finish to take a well-earned third place finish, while Rob Hooper battled gamely to secure fourth spot. Leading in the chasing bunch was Kev Opele who secured fifth position, with Paul Summerfield rounding out the top six. The juniors and division 2 competed over 15km. It was the front marker Tom Reid who pulled out all the stops, riding strongly to keep the chasing riders at bay to take the win. Jack Templeton, riding off the back mark, earned second place and fastest time honours, riding the distance in 33 minutes 39 seconds. James Reid dug deep to charge home in third. Kenny Johnston produced a ride out of the top drawer to secure division 2 honours, and the fastest time. Veteran Merv Grewar continued his outstanding season to finish second, followed by Brian Ellis in third. Next week the club will travel to Gardiners Road, Rakaia to contest the 50km handicap event.

BOWLS
Sub centre pairs finalists found By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
A select field of bowlers took to the Ashburton MSA green on Saturday for the annual sub centre pairs, and only a small group of those competing managed to make it through to the next phase of the competition. From the original field of 14 teams, only four managed to secure the required three wins to make it through to the post-section stage of the competition. The line-up could have been bigger – but two matches in the final round were sudden death, with the winner qualifying while the other didn’t, and two other teams had a chance, but fell at the final hurdle. Top qualifiers on the green were the Methven pairing of Craig Carter and Rob Fensom, who went through untouched winning all four games including a tightlyfought affair against Graeme Bish-
op and Alex Crawford who, despite losing to the Methven duo in the third round managed to win their final game of the day – again in a thriller, against Murray Smallridge to qualify. Joining them in the knockout stage this weekend will be Linton Muir and Tony Inwood, who finished second on the green on Saturday with three wins. They did it the hard way, losing their first game to Richard Kane before bouncing back to win their final three matches and grabbing a finals berth. The fourth side through were Methven’s Jeff Nowell and Aaron Allred who also lost their first match – to club-mates Carter and Fensom – and then went on to win their next three. The two Methven teams will meet in one semi-final this weekend at the Hampstead Bowling club, while Muir and Inwood will play Bishop and Crawford in the other with the winners of those matches advancing to the final.

Hawke hopes halted CRICKET
By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury’s push for a possible Hawke Cup challenge came unstuck in Oamaru at the weekend. Sitting on top of the Zone 4 table heading into the weekend, the side fell to a 77-run defeat to North Otago in their final zone match-up at Centennial Park, which wiped out any hope of the team advancing to a challenge with the cup holders in March. A batting collapse from the visitors late on Saturday was the defining phase of the two day game, after North Otago registered 186 earlier in their first innings. The side have leapfrogged into contention with one match remaining in the zone, as attention now shifts towards this weekend’s clash between Southland and North Otago in Invercargill. Having being sent in by William Southby in the morning, North Otago began in a watchful fashion as their openers ground it out during the first hour of play. Tom Middleton and Harry McMillan orchestrated their downfall a couple of overs after drinks as North Otago slipped to 38/2. A further two wickets were claimed by the lunch break, as Mid Canterbury edged in front with the hosts on 82/4. The visitors were well on top early in the second session, courtesy of a double strike from Ryan Bell. North Otago’s Tom Dempster – a right royal surname in New Zealand cricketing circles – played a dogged role for the home side with wickets falling around him. Jeremy Smith, coming in at eight, chipped in with 24 from 33 balls to help the southerners past

the 100 mark, as he and Dempster put on a stand of 43. The partnership was broken at 136, when Bell had Smith trapped in front for his third scalp of the innings. North Otago lost their eighth a few overs later, however another niggly stand – 37 between Dempster and number 10 Blake James – frustrated Mid Canterbury. Middleton had James (12) caught before Dempster (62) was bowled the very next ball to end North Otago’s innings. Needing 187 to secure the first innings advantage, the visitors’ start was catastrophic. Angus Jemmett was adjudged leg-before for a fifth ball duck in the first over of the innings, before Ben Innes also fell in the same way in the third as North
Otago’s Cameron Grubb had two in two overs. There would be no first innings rescue act from young Devon Flannery either, caught in the next over to leave Mid Canterbury reeling with only four runs on the board. It was left to Des Kruger and James Southby to resist a North Otago attack with their tails up. The pair got the score to 20 before bedlam returned as the visitors lost three wickets for nine runs with the score at 29/6, and their Hawke Cup campaign now on life support. Captain William Southby and Tom Middleton tried to ease the bleeding, and wrangled the score past 50. After putting on 30, Middleton was also trapped in front, with
the tail well exposed. Richard Turpie’s dismissal a few overs later made it the fifth leg-before of the innings, with Mid Canterbury eight down and the matter of the follow-on coming into play. That mark of 86 was avoided as Southby and Shaun Stagg added 29 for the ninth wicket, before the skipper’s dismissal for 41 had a sub-100 total on the cards. Stagg and Harry McMillan hung on until stumps with the tally at 101/9. A miraculous reversal of fortunes was needed as Stagg and McMillan briefly thwarted North Otago’s assault during the early exchanges on Sunday. Their final wicket stand of 35 was the highest of the innings as Mid Canterbury surrendered a
62-run deficit – a supreme bowling performance and successful fourth innings chase their only hope of remaining alive in the Hawke Cup. The signs were looking positive for the out-of-towners, as North Otago were rocked to 8/3 as Stagg and Turpie fired up. North Otago reinforced their upper hand though, with decisive rearguards with fourth and fifth wicket stands of 42 and 52 respectively as the lead passed 150. Mid Canterbury made inroads into the middle and lower order as North Otago were dismissed for 155, leaving the visitors an imposing total of 218. The innings again started badly as Jemmett completed a pair with the score at 8, however Flannery launched with five boundaries. He reached 20 at better than a run-a-ball before he was caught. Kruger and Innes put on a high-octane half century stand to provide a foundation, as the pair cut the runs required to 140. North Otago hit back with two quick wickets, that of Innes and James Southby as Mid Canterbury fell to 88/4. Kruger was still there, however Mid Canterbury’s prospects took a turn for the worse when the side lost three wickets in four overs, including that of the set batsman for 67 to leave them at 121/7 and on the brink. The end was nigh as the remaining three wickets were mopped up with Mid Canterbury well beaten. South Canterbury’s win over Otago Country in Alexandra put them top of the zone, however their best hope of a challenge will be Southland claiming first innings points against North Otago in Invercargill.
Hooper hat-trick highlights heroics A dazzling Alex Hooper spell of bowling took the Tech Stags towards a shot at their first piece of South Canterbury Cricket silverware on the weekend. Playing in the final round of the T20 competition, Tech needed victory against Temuka to assure themselves of a place in this weekend’s knockout stage of the competition. And at more than one point during the match, things threatened to fall out of their grasp. Playing at home, Tech should have been confident of a comprehensive victory with Temuka winless through the first three stages of the competition. But it took the effort of Hooper – who snared a double-hat trick in the second innings to see the host side home, narrowly. Winning the toss and electing to bat they would have felt comfortable with destiny in their own hands. But a strong start was soon outdone by a tail order that failed to wag as Tech limped to 92 all out in the 17th over. Jason Morrison and Matthew Tait got the innings off to a solid
SCOREBOARD Tech Stags 92/10 (Bevan Richan 27, Sam Clark 18, Jason Morrison 16. Luke Slee 3-4) Temuka 87/10 (Alex Hooper 4-16 including double hat-trick. Alex Veint 3-18, Harry Jones 2-15)
start and when Tait fell at the end of the third, they were 30-2. Sam Clark and Bevan Richan put on 46 for the third wicket which set the innings up nicely, but Tech’s last seven wickets fell for less than 20 runs – the final five batsmen all clean-bowled. Things looked to go from bad to worse when Temuka opened up the shoulders from the start of their innings, and when they raced to 50 inside five overs with only one man back in the shed, the game looked out of Tech’s reach. But a succession of quick wickets, brought the game back to teeter on the edge. Alex Veint got the ball rolling
when he grabbed three quick wickets on his way to 3-18 off four overs and then Hooper was thrown the ball for a second spell, which proved to be a master stroke. On the fourth ball of his third over he grabbed Cameron Slee’s wicket for 11, then on the fifth and sixth ball removed the next two batsmen in. An over went by and then with the first ball of his next over, Hooper struck again, claiming his fourth consecutive wicket. That saw Temuka falter – going from 81-6 and still in with a big chance to 86-9 10 balls later. When Harry Jones removed Temuka’s final batsman in the next over, Tech had somehow pulled a rabbit out of the hat to secure the victory and book a spot in this week’s knockout where they will play Star, again on the Ashburton Domain. The winner of that match will play the loser of the top qualifiers match between Pleasant Point and Celtic, with the winner of that match gaining an automatic path through to the final.
A double hat-trick for Alex Hooper guided Tech Stags to the knockout stage of the South Canterbury Cricket T20 competition.

VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Once again, you’ll be reminded of the importance of attitude. If not everything, it’s certainly something. Such is the pleasure and privilege of human connection. Enjoy. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The effort that goes into impressing a person hardly ever pays off directly, but it does pay off in other ways, namely in inspiring people to do and be better at their job. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Though you experience things in linear time, creations rarely happen like that. Endings sometimes come first, beginnings last... the time to title things is at the end, when you know what it actually is. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The boundaries always exist somewhere. What an amazing weekend we just had at the Brandon, and one man in particular is walking on air at the moment. Cometh the “Day” cometh the man. Old Bruce “King Midas” Day has got his golden touch working overtime. Playing the 12th hole on Saturday he leant onto his driver and covered the 160m to the flag, the ball, never getting higher than ankle height, put a dent

in the flag and nestled itself snuggly at the bottom of the cup. In the playing 4 of Bruce, myself, Gaby and Perry, only I saw the ball go in, as Gaby was on his phone, Perry was chatting to a group playing down 17 and Bruce was not tall enough to see due to the curvature of the earth and the fact that his knees are too close to his feet. We did have a couple of drinks to celebrate, but as he had a big game Sunday we did not go too mad. Winners of the Men’s opening day Jim McKenzie trophy were Ross Chatterton and Richard Mckernan with a wonderful nett 61, pipping a gaggle of pairs on 62. On Sunday we then had the wonderful spectacle that is the Property Brokers Shootout Final. 19 players and the biggest crowd we have seen down there for a local game, all held their breath as the first tee shots were hit. Tuffy led the way and hit it into the right hand hedge bottom, Cheryl followed as did Pete but after taking penalty drops they still got through. One player who shall remain nameless, we will just call him “Mr Smith”, see I’m not heartless! Right, so Grant teed it up, had an almighty swing, hit the ground about a foot behind the ball, altering the earths axis, the ball then dribbled up to the ladies tee block hit the tee marker and bounced backwards. He then proceeded to hack his way up the first and after seven shots his day was over. One by one the others fell. Taking 4th place falling at 16 was Blair Snowball, while Dave Morrison dropped off on 17, and Jeff Hewitt almost followed dad’s footsteps but got pipped at the last. After all the dust had settled, who stood proud? Yes it was that man again, rounding off a great weekend Bruce Day, old steady Eddie did it again. Well done Bruce, and thanks to Hamish and Karen and the Property Brokers gang. Roll on next year. We now move to the Hydraulink Brandon Open 36 hole stroke on Saturday. We are still taking entries and you can enter on the day, but please turn up for a 7:45 am tee off. The Harvey Norman Classic is almost full, we really only have morning tee times left.

Conditions were good although the scores did not reflect this and with tight fairways accurate shots were a must. After winning the trophy last year our ladies team of Maxine Carter, Marilyn Bennett, Judy Webb and Marilyn Cross went into the competition fill of confidence, only to be beaten by Kaipoi on count back to finish second, but still a great effort. Three points back in third place was our mixed team of Trish Cates, Brent Smith, Richard Thompson and Steve Stratford. Steve Thomas won a sleeve of golf balls for having a two and Steve Stratford picked up some cash after scoring a birdie on a certain hole. Our next game is on February 21 at Hororata.

Kimberley Bird continues to keep ahead of the game. The Mid Canterbury equestrian star held her nerve to win the Tavendale and Partners New Zealand National Premier Horse Championship at McLean’s Island in Christchurch at the weekend. Her maiden national title is the latest in a record of standout accomplishments aboard her 11-year-old mare Cera Cassina, and the Chertsey rider described it as one of her most cherished. “It’s definitely up there with the wins I’ve had,” she said. “Being a national title, it’s pretty cool to have my name on that trophy. “It’s a pretty special one, that’s for sure.” Sunday’s win follows her fourth round FEI World Cup win in Taupo in 2019, and last year’s victory at the Premier Series Grand Prix in Takapoto. Carrying on from her form at the ESNZ Championship Show in Ashburton the previous weekend, Bird and Cera Cassina headed home runner-up Samantha McIntosh, of Cambridge, during Sunday’s event by just .2 of a fault in the class. It was a thrilling finish to the
third and final day, with just three combinations coming through as the 24-year-old completed the competition with 9.26 faults to McIntosh’s 9.46 aboard Takapoto Alaid de Chez Nous. Despite limited preparation before the big three-day event, Bird said she was confident heading into the business end of the championship, knowing her mare revels in the bigger jump demands. “I knew she would be in her element because the bigger the jumps are the better she jumps.” Not that the final day was without nerves, after the leaderboard had fluctuated throughout the event. Bird said in the aftermath of her win that it was the most intense competition she had been involved in. “It was a small line-up, but any one of us could have won it. “I think I have learnt to focus on my game. “You just have to go out and leave the rails up and do the best you can. “It really boiled down to keeping your head.” The National Premier Horse Championship was also part of the POLi Payments Premier League Series. Next on the agenda for Bird is the Horse of the Year event in Hastings on March 9-14.
It’s a pretty special one, that’s for sure
Mid Canterbury’s Kimberley Bird won her first national title on Sunday.
