Ashburton Plunket received a helping hand this week as it prepared toys for the organisation’s pre-loved toy sale. The pre-Christmas sale provides an opportunity to buy a bag for $5 and fill it with toys. Ashburton College students spent their work day cleaning toys and sharing time with Plunket mums and their children. Six in a row for Mt Hutt Skifield By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Mt Hutt has taken out the title of New Zealand’s best ski resort for the sixth year in a row at the World Ski Awards in Austria this weekend. With another trophy winging its way from Europe, Mt Hutt Ski Area Manager James McKenzie said it was a fantastic result in a disrupted season. “It’s great to get that endorsement on the work we have been doing and it gives us a mandate to press forward with our plans for development,” McKenzie said. This year was a trying season McKenzie said, with the impacts of Covid-19, having no international visitors, and a frustrating number of closed days due to inclement weather. “Our staff pulled out all the stops to get us up and running. “Our plans changed so many times in the lead up to opening and staff numbers were low to

begin with, but we were still able to deliver a strong season.” While the official vote count is not disclosed, McKenzie had been advised by the organiser that the voter turnout was high again this year and to be voted as the best ski resort in the country again was a big pat on the back for his staff’s hard work in a turbulent season. While 2020 was a big season for a number of reasons, 2021 shapes to be a huge one for Mt Hutt with plans to install a new eight-seater chairlift that can carry up to 3000 people an hour to the top of the run in two minutes. McKenzie said the countdown was on to a major decision on Tuesday on whether they proceed with the plans to install the new chairlift. “It’s a critical day next week when we will decide to proceed or not, but barring any major

changes we will likely move forward.” The chairlift will come from Italy in 51 containers, with the first containers already on their w a y

and the others ready to be shipped. If the project is given the green light as planned, it will replace the existing 30-year-old quad chair which will start to be deconstructed. McKenzie said the Nor’west Express lift should be up and running in time for next year’s ski season.

Volunteers at last year’s Community Christmas Lunch.

PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

Ready for another community Christmas lunch By Heather Mackenzie heather.m@theguardian.co.nz

Making a list, and checking it twice is second nature for Ann Allott when it comes to organising the Ashburton District’s Community Christmas Lunch these days. After an impressive seven years at the helm, organising the event for the wider community, Allott has become a dab hand at getting things in place and 2020 is no different with things well under control for another instalment. Officially the Community Christmas Lunch comes under the Presbyterian Support umbrella who take care of the administration side, while Allott and her team of volunteers look after everything else. All Fed Up catering owner Dan Lysaght, has again put his hand up to be the Christmas Day chef for the eighth year running. “We are very lucky to have Dan Lysaght

doing the cooking again this year, without a cook the day simply couldn’t happen,” Allott said. Lysaght said although the day is a long one, he gets to the Tinwald hall at 7.30am, it’s an extremely rewarding one. “This is such a feel-good thing to do. It is my way of giving back to a community who have supported me throughout the year. It’s a fun day, it really is.” Both Lysaght and Allott stress that all

members of the community are welcome at the Christmas table. This is a community Christmas Day for everyone and anyone to come and enjoy, they said. People may be new to the district, have family living elsewhere or are at a bit of a loss, if that is the case get in touch and book your place, Allott said. “We would be upset if people didn’t join in because they felt they hadn’t met some imagined criteria. There is no such thing, it’s open to all, young, old and in between.” “Please don’t be alone on Christmas Day, there is no need to be.” Allott is constantly amazed by the kindness of businesses who donate goods or help out financially. “We have never run short of anything, thanks to the generosity of those who donate.” Watch out for the registration forms in the Ashburton Guardian, they will run several times leading up to Christmas.

New Zealand’s population is on the move, out of cities and into the regions, but few of those upping sticks and relocating appear to be coming to the Ashburton District. Net internal migration statistics released by Stats NZ, show that 2020 has been a year marked by people opting to abandon city life and resettle in rural parts of New Zealand as working patterns change and the number of jobs that can be completed remotely increases. Net internal migration counts people from one part of New Zealand moving to another part of the country. The biggest winner has been Selwyn, with a net internal migration gain of 2100 people this year. Waimakariri is also near the top of the list with a gain of 1100. Ashburton, however, has had a net internal migration loss of 90. It was one of 21 territorial authorities to see a net outflow of locals heading to other parts of the country. During the year, Auckland lost 12,600 residents to other areas, but brought in 36,7000 international migrants to make up the loss. Christchurch had the second largest outflow of residents, 1900, followed by Wellington, 1400. One of the few cities to benefit from an internal migration surge was Tauranga, up 1900 people.

Water zone stalwarts retire By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton Water Zone Committee has been meeting for 10 years and over those years members have joined, served their terms and made way for new blood. And this week two of the committee’s current members John Waugh and Karl Russell called time on their service. As a hydrologist, Waugh brought with him a huge store of knowledge when he joined the committee in 2017.

He had spent a working life involved in water issues and while he did not officially become a committee member until that year, he had attended water zone meetings since their inception in 2010. In leaving, Waugh sounded a warning on the state of the Ashburton River. “Even when the Ashburton River resource consent review is completed, the river will still be the most heavily over allocated river in New Zealand. “If you want to see what happens to an over allocated river, look at parts of the Darling River

in Australia. It’s now a septic soup of blue green algae,” he said. In spite of the over allocation issue, Waugh commended actions that were being taken to meet the minimum flow target for the river by 2023. Problems with water quality were years in the making, he said, citing a 1978-1979 study on wells that showed elevated levels of nitrates. “Today’s problems have taken 40 to 50 years to develop, it’s not something new, it’s just getting worse. This problem showed up long before the dairy boom.” Russell, who represents Te

Runanga o Arowhenua on the committee said he counted achievements during his time as a member in the development of a harmonious, one team approach to resolving water related issues. “We now sit in the same room and discuss things; 15 years ago that didn’t happen,” he said. There was now a real sense of respect for one another and an environment where people could disagree on an issue, discuss an issue and still make good decisions, Russell said. “To be respected for what you talk about and share and then

Aiming for a baby-covered Christmas tree By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Wanted: photos of babies of all ages, from all generations. Ashburton Plunket is putting out the call for baby photos and it’s hoping they’ll come in by the hundreds. Those photos are needed to create a novel Christmas tree, one that Sueann Carr hopes will be a winner in next weekend’s Festive Forest event, organised by Ashburton County Lions. The event will see about 40 trees created and decorated by community groups, businesses and individuals. These will be set up and judged in the Ashburton Event Centre on December 3. They will then be part of a twoday festive celebration. Carr has put out a call for baby

photos that will be turned into snow globes and used to create a uniquely Plunket style tree. “We’re hoping to get a range of photos so ask your mum, your aunt, your granddad. We want photos across the decades and you don’t have to have been a Plunket baby, you can be a Plunket supporter as well,” Carr said. She’s wanting copies of photos only, as those submitted won’t be returned. Anonymity of the snow globe babies will be guaranteed as just the year of birth, not the baby’s name will be used. Photos of babies or children up to five years of age are suitable for display, as this covers the Plunket age catchment. “We wanted a Plunket themed tree and what better way to do that than with Plunket babies,” she said.

make decisions. Sometimes we need to rewind ourselves to listen. “Some of the things we talked about in the past are now starting to come true.” In retiring, Russell said he’d done his dash, he was mentally and physically “burned out”. Russell has served two stints on the water zone committee since its inception. The departure of Waugh and Russell will now see three vacancies on the zone committee, with the position left by Ben Curry’s resignation in June last year yet to be filled.

PRESS BENCH

Sift the wheat from the chaff before election

F

irst it was Tauranga, now it’s Invercargill, two local authorities where disharmony, discord and dissent are rife. Tauranga, the golden city, the city of sunshine and ridiculous house prices, the place that’s one of the fastest growing in the country is in a mess. Its councillors are fighting and there are power struggles and dissent. First term mayor Tenby Powell was clearly not capable of handling the political infighting, pulling the pin and calling for the running of the city by commissioners. Invercargill, on the other hand, is dealing with a long standing mayor who might well have reached the end of his

By Sue Newman FROM THE PRESS BENCH run. He’s no longer the brash upcomer who headed south and declared “I don’t care where as long as I’m mayor”, and appears to be losing his grip on the council’s leadership leaving a rudderless team. What’s happening in both cities could easily also be happening on a lesser scale with any council team around the country because of the way in which local body elections are run. They’re an open door to

anyone who has the confidence to put their name in the hat and who has the public presence to muster enough votes. There’s no preparation, no qualification needed, no standards to pass. Any training that comes a councillor’s way is after the event – a one-day initiation to do what is undeniably an incredibly important job. It’s no wonder some flounder, others struggle to be part of a team and not top dog. Maybe it’s time for an overhaul, for a rewriting of the election process, with some form of training or screening process put in place before names go on the ballot paper. At least the chaff could be sifted from the wheat at that point,

motivation would be tested, the reality of the job would be revealed and the depth of the commitment required hammered home. Communities would still have a chance to vote for the candidates they wanted, but they’d then have the assurance that those standing were up to the job. And candidates would know exactly what they were getting into, that their team was just that, rather than a collection of individual egos. Currently we’re pretty lucky in Ashburton. If there are any cracks, they’re not showing. what we’re seeing is healthy debate, rigorous challenging and a clear desire to get on with business. Long may it last.

Out with the old, in with the new By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

For decades of pilots it’s been home base, but the Mid Canterbury Aero Club’s headquarters is now just a patch of bare ground. The elderly club rooms have been demolished, the site cleared and plans for a new clubrooms are firing ahead as the replacement headquarters prepares to leave its site in Ashburton centre for a road trip to a new future. In a two-bid contest, the aero club won the race to secure the building once used to house Ashburton’s Information Centre, and it is now in another race to be moved out of the town centre before the Christmas shopping rush starts. The demolition was a pretty quick affair, club member Keith Pickford said. Once asbestos issues were dealt with, roofing iron was removed, the wooden structure was bowled, crushed and carted away and that just left the foundation to be removed. That done,

Two planting projects that will boost biodiversity values in the Ashburton District have been given the money and the greenlight to proceed. Under the Environment Canterbury’s Immediate Steps biodiversity funding scheme, that provides funding for a biodiversity partnerships between water zone committees and residents, approval has been given by Ashburton’s Water Zone Committee for plantings in the Glens Wetland and Mt Harding Creek. Both projects, however, come with a request that water quality

Water consents Forty-five of the 88 consents to take water from the Ashburton River that are undergoing review, have been granted, one has been declined, one surrendered and one is subject to public notification. The review of the remaining 40 are on hold while holders produce a plan to resolve outstanding issues.

Weighbridge A project to construct a heavy truck weighbridge just north of the Rakaia River Bridge is on hold after objectors demonstrated it was impractical. The NZ Transport Agency is now looking at alternative locations, with one site being investigated on Old South Road/Heslerton Road opposite Synlait’s Dunsandel factory.

Bridge lights Lights on the river bridge have been unlit for about four months because EA Networks was reluctant to work on the bridge poles because of safety concerns. The NZ Transport Agency has worked with the lines company to ensure the streetlamps are replaced.

Student drivers Seventeen students took part in the first AA Licensing Mobile Unit driver’s licence tests at Mount Hutt College. The students achieved a pass rate of 78 per cent. The initiative had been developed as a trial between Mount Hutt College, Ashburton College, AA and the Ashburton District Council to target students who, for financial reasons, struggle to get to a licensing office. College students have also taken part in licence tests.

Warning signs Since active ‘stop ahead’ signs were installed at the high crash rate intersection of Thompson’s Track and Somerton Road last year there have been no serious or fatal crashes reported.

Eruption toll rises to 22

For decades it’s been the headquarters for the Ashburton District’s private pilots, but the Mid Canterbury Aero Club’s gathering spot has been demolished to make way for the relocated Ashburton town centre building that served for many years as an i-SITE. PHOTO KEITH PICKFORD the site was bare and Pickford said foundations are now close to being laid for the new building.

The plan is to have the new building settled on site before Christmas, Pickford said. Removal crews are working

on the i-SITE building, inserting stablising beams and removing a front verandah before the relocation.

Local wetlands receive funding boost By Sue Newman

In brief

is monitored as part of the funding deal. The area proposed for the Glens Wetland is on a Lower Downs Road property. It covers 2.2 hectares and contains two streams that flow off the lower slopes of Surrey Hills as well as several wetland areas. About 1100 native plants have already been planted at the site with an initial grant from the Immediate Steps Fund and the second grant of $19,704 will complete the project. This will be used to buy 4200 ecosourced native plants and plant guards. The project has an allup cost of $43,640. When the pitch was made for funding at Tuesday’s Ashburton Water Zone meeting, mayor Neil Brown suggested the wet-

land should be tested before the plantings were completed and at intervals after that to see how fencing the area and the filtering effect of plantings improved water quality. “Testing could confirm the success of the project,” he said. Committee member and ECan councillor Ian Mackenzie agreed and said testing water quality would be a great way to show the quality and value of wetlands. “Without water quality monitoring the projects are half cocked,” he said. Funds were also approved for Mt Harding stream plantings. This stream runs for 33 kilometres from the base of Mt Hutt, through about 20 prop-

erties in Methven and joins the Ashburton River. It has recreational and amenity values. The zone committee, through the funding programme, has already supported a number of individual riparian projects along the stream, but no overall management plan has been developed. One property owner has already planted 6 kilometres of the stream bank and intends to plant an additional one kilometre each year. In December and January ECan staff will walk the catchment and engage with landowners. From this a prioritised work plan will be developed. The project would come with a $100,000 price tag.

Police have confirmed Horst Westenfelder, 64, died overseas in July, bringing the number of people who died as a result of the eruption in December last year to 22. Whakaari / White Island erupted on December 9, 2019 while tour groups were still on the volcanic Bay of Plenty island. Westenfelder died due to medical complications while receiving treatment for his injuries in a hospital overseas on July 2. A public remembrance event marking one year since the eruption will take place at Mataatua Reserve from 11.30am on December 9.

Covid-19 cases Genome sequencing has showed the Air New Zealand crew member who tested positive for Covid-19 in China is not linked to known cases in New Zealand, the ministry of health says. The ministry reported one new case of the coronavirus in managed isolation yesterday. The person arrived on November 14 from the United Kingdom via the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia and tested positive around day 12 of their stay in managed isolation. The Air New Zealand crew member was likely exposed to the virus overseas, but the ministry said it would continue to take precautions because the source of infection was still unknown

RETIREMENT 7

Would you like milk with that? By Heather Mackenzie heather.m@theguardian.co.nz

“We worked on the bottom floor of Beaths, which was right across the road from the Ballantynes building. I saw the fire start on the lower floor and then travel upwards.” When you have been around for 90 years like Joan McKay has memories pile up on one another like oat stookes drying in the summer sun. Born in Ashburton Hospital in 1930 to parents Jeanie and Ralph Chambers, McKay grew up on the family farm on Pole Road in Methven, where she and her sister Margaret and brother Trevor all attended the Lauriston School. War time hit and with it came a shortage of manual labour to help on the farm, so Ralph and Jeanie decided it was time to sell the farm and look for something else. That something else came in the form of work for Ralph at the Belfast Freezing Works. McKay said her dad liked that kind of work. A chance conversation with a chap in a plumbing shop, who said to Ralph: “There must be more to life than this”, led to the family going into the milk run business in St Albans and Papanui. McKay remembers getting up at 3am and going out to the Devon Milk Factory on the corner of Johns and Main North roads to collect the milk bottles, loading up the truck, driving back and starting the delivery. Milk safely delivered, McKay and her father would return home at 7am, to enjoy their breakfast cooked by her sister Margaret. When her father’s back was playing up McKay said her mother Jeanie, sister Margaret and brother Trevor would all step in to lend a hand. Those who are familiar with McKay know what a hard worker she has always been, and back then it was no different. Milk run finished, she would eat breakfast and then jump on her bike to get to her day job as a tailoress at Beaths Department Store in the centre of Christchurch. Here she worked a full eight hours, sewing men’s suits and fancy ladies’ clothes.

Joan McKay helped source the stories for the book Coal Range by Candlelight and the image is of her beloved Angus (left). PHOTO HEATHER MACKENZIE 241120-HM-204 “There was an alleyway between Beaths and the DIC building next door where I could leave my bike. It was always there after I finished work, you couldn’t do that today, someone would swipe it,” she said. McKay has happy memories of working with the other two to three women in her department and of her boss, who used to sit crossed-legged on the wooden table hand-sewing interfacing into suit lapels.

tried their best to reach them, but their ladder was too short and the fire moved too quickly, they couldn’t save them, she said. McKay said when they went back to Beaths the next day all their building’s windows were all cracked to pieces due to the heat from the fire across the road. “I enjoyed my time in Christchurch, but Angus squashed that when I married him

Joan McKay at her 90th birthday party with Hillary Hutton (nee McKay) who made the cake.

Not all of her memories from the four years she was there are as pleasant, McKay had the misfortune to be working at Beaths the day of the Ballantynes fire on November 18, 1947. “We worked on the bottom floor of Beaths, which was right across the road from the Ballantynes building. I saw the fire start on the lower floor and then travel upwards.” She recalls seeing around eight people trapped on the third floor. The fire brigade

and followed him to Methven.” For her all her hard years of service at Beaths, McKay was given a nineteen pounds and six shillings bonus when she left. A paltry amount in her opinion and one that still rankles all these years later. Romance for the young tailoress and the farmer began when they met at a wedding dance in the Lyndhurst Hall. “Dad and Angus started chatting by the stage, the rest of us were sitting at a table further down the hall.”

During the conversation the men discovered they both belonged to the same Lodge. Common ground established, Ralph brought Angus over to meet the rest of the clan. Lingering glances, shy smiles, and sisterly giggles prompted Angus to ask the city girl to dance. “Halfway round the hall Angus asked me how long I had been at school for. I told him I attended West High in Christchurch, but that was three years ago. He must have thought I looked very young.” Wedding dance over the pair went their separate ways. However a smitten Angus was not about to let the young girl slip through his fingers. Putting his amateur detective skills to work Angus tracked her down via her brother Trevor who was working at Matson and Co, a stock and station agent in Christchurch at the time. Family address supplied, Angus soon dropped by and asked her out. Marriage followed in June 1951 when they tied the knot in the Knox Church in Christchurch. “We went to Timaru for our honeymoon and found a nice place to stay, but had to keep it short as Angus said he had to get back to the farm. ‘I have work to do’, he said. “We have two sons, Angus and John, they are both pretty good fellows. I also have three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.” Husband Angus has been gone for 15 years now, and I miss him every day, she said. Mention cups of tea in Methven and just about everybody will tell you McKay’s tea pouring capabilities and ongoing commitment to the task is legendary stuff. Albeit at Presbyterian Church functions, Methven House meetings, Coal Range and Candlelight book committee meetings, Methven Foot Clinic afternoons or in the early days when up to 20 men were working on the farm, everybody knows none of this would have ever been right without McKay holding on to a two-handled aluminium tea pot and asking: “Would you like milk with that?”. Living in Terrace View it is now up to the carers to bring her cups of tea, however in a twist of irony the champion tea maker only drinks hot water these days.

OUR VIEW

There’s no place like home By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

I

’ve always felt like the Ashburton District is a pretty good place to live. I had the pleasure of growing up here, before leaving for a while, but always with the intention of coming back. A nice quiet way of life, where you are far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Christchurch up the road, but not too far away if you need to sneak up the road and grab something or to attend an event. With good people, plenty to do and a really relaxed and largely welcoming community, it was where I wanted my children to grow up – and luckily, they are. And I know I’m not alone. A lot of people I grew up with are doing the same. They’ve gone away, lived it up for a few years, but have returned to settle back down into life and to enjoy what the place we call home has to offer. So why aren’t others seeing it that way? The latest population statistics show that New Zealanders are looking at uprooting their lives from the major centres of our country and moving to the country. In search of the quieter life, perhaps. But they don’t appear to be choosing our back doorstep. And the question is, why? Despite what some social media commentators will tell you, this district has plenty going for it and plenty to do and see. You’ve just got to get out and see it. From recreational adventures right through to educational opportunities all bases are covered and done so in a manner that works a lot smoother than what you’ll find in major areas of this country. With a plethora of jobs available in all variations of sectors of employment, there’s no shortage of opportunities – but something is holding the masses back. There’s something stopping them from breaking down those initial barriers and making the decision to come and join us. Talk to anyone who’s moved here in recent times and they’ll likely tell you it was one of the best decisions that they’ve ever made. They love the wide open spaces, the quiet, yet just busy enough way of living and would recommend it to anyone else who asked. Perhaps we need them to be fronting our next welcoming campaign. They’re the living proof that it works.

OPINION 9

A-FLUSH with GERMS I

n the past I have written about my concerns around the anti-bacterial world we live in. I worry that we are killing off all the good bacteria as well as the nasty ones. Don’t for a minute think I’m trying to stop people using soap to wash their hands, it’s all the sprays on the market these days that I’m concerned about. You know the ones you see on the telly ads where the lady is wiping down her kitchen bench with raw chicken legs before making the world right again with a few sprays from the magic bottle. Bacteria are pretty smart little buggers and I fear they will be busy working away in the back room on a plan to combat all these sprays from the magic bottles.

By Phill Hooper

OFF THE AIR

Things aren’t going to get better in a hurry with this virus floating around the world. It’s an opportune time for big companies to prey on the world’s growing fear around anything bacteriary and virusary (yep I just made up two words). Here’s an example of that. The world’s first anti-bacterial phone has been introduced. As you know, our phones are among the most contaminated objects we regularly come into contact with and that was BEFORE COVID-19.

Now, Bullitt Group says it has enhanced its Cat S42 smartphone with antimicrobial protection, which prevents bacteria from spreading or multiplying on the device. The new version of the existing Cat smartphone is treated with silver ions during manufacturing, which they say inhibits growth of microbes. Tests show the Biomaster antimicrobial technology reduces bacteria growth by 80 per cent within 15 minutes and eliminates 99 per cent of microbes within 24 hours. The phone is also dust and waterproof, and can be washed with soap, or even bleach for greater protection. And, yes, Cat is the same company that makes Caterpillar farm and construction equipment. I don’t really understand the

need for this product. It’s your phone, used predominantly by you and therefore carrying your germs. So if you don’t already have Covid, you probably aren’t too likely to catch it off yourself. Of course, your other option for keeping nasty germs off your phone is not to take it to the toilet with you. While we are talking toilets and new inventions, a Spanish company has invented a self-cleaning toilet that could make flushing obsolete. Kekatron Desarrollo SL has released a video showcasing their new loo’s capabilities. In the video, it is loaded with a mountain of imitation refuse (insert poo emoji) and toilet paper. Instead of swirling it away as a normal toilet does, this unit re-

tracts the bowl into a dishwasher-like device that automatically cleans, dries and disinfects it with ozone gas after each use. Afterward, the toilet springs back into place, looking no worse for wear. And best of all, the cleaning process only requires two litres of water – about a third of what an average toilet uses per flush. I’m picking that any parents of teenagers will be thinking “challenge accepted”. Till next week Hoo roo Phill Hooper Flush with germs Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

H

ow close the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series actually is to motorsport has now been impressively demonstrated by GT3 racer Maro Engel on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. With an officially measured and notarised certified time of 6:43,616 min for the 20.6 kilometre-long track (measured without the straight at track section T13) and 6:48,047 min for the 20.832 kilometre-long total track (measured with the straight at track section T13), the new V8 meteor is placed in the top group of the street-legal “sports cars” category and number one among the fully standard, unmodified models. Maro Engel made full use of all the possibilities offered by the new Mer-

cedes-AMG GT Black Series as standard: such as the most powerful AMG V8 series engine ever with 537 kW (730 hp), the sophisticated aerodynamics and extensive suspension adjustment options. For example, the front splitter made of visible carbon fibre was extended to the Race position, and the lower and upper wing blades of the rear spoiler were each adjusted in the middle position. The adjustable AMG coilover suspension with adaptive adjustment damping was lowered by five millimetres at the front and three millimetres at the rear to further enhance the venturi effect of the front diffuser.

The AMG GT Black Series is significantly faster than my GT3 race car.

The camber was adjusted to the maximum possible values of negative 3.8 degrees at the front axle and negative 3.0 degrees at

the rear. In the case of the adjustable anti-roll bars, racing professional Engel opted for the hardest of the three possible settings, and the 35-year-old adjusted the ninestage AMG traction control between positions six and seven -depending on the section of the track. AMG GT Black Series customers can also take advantage of all these settings and variations. This also applies to the Michelen Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tyres with soft compound, which are completely standard

equipment on the AMG GT Black Series. The highest possible level of safety was ensured not only by the standard AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system, but also by the Track Package with rollover protection system and four-point safety belts offered as standard equipment. “That was a really impressive ride,” said Maro Engel after completing the record lap. “With speeds of up to almost 270 km/h in the Kesselchen section of the track or well over 300 km/h on the long Döttinger Höhe straight, the AMG GT Black Series is significantly faster than my GT3 race car. To finally drive around the Nordschleife in 6:48.047 minutes with a production road car in these track conditions is really awesome.”

WEIRD AND WONDERFUL

By Bernard Egan

S

MOTORING WRITER

urfing YouTube seemed the best option on a particularly dull old day recently. And a clip featuring a French car museum proved to be a good

MOTORING SERVICES

choice. Some of the cars – all magnificent – had familiar names. Bugatti, Panhard – Levassor, Delahaye to name a few. But then one appeared with an unusual name, from the “heard about that before?” category. A Voisin. Amazing, incredible, distinctive, superb – what a car! To have come up with designs for the cars which bear his name, Gabriel Voisin must have been creative, artistic, forward thinking and probably a bit of a character. He certainly was. And more as well. A Frenchman who was born in 1880, and was – to say the least – mad about engineering from a very early age, Gabriel Voisin is regarded as unique among car designers. Voisin was a dashing man around town, who enjoyed the company of the ladies and hosted grand parties at which it was not at all uncommon for guests to be pushed into swimming pools. He entertained presidents and crown heads of state on his yacht.

Designing cars was, in fact, a second career for Voisin. He began as a pioneering aircraft designer, only switching to cars after World War One. Voisin’s uncompromisingly individual designs made extensive use of light alloys, especially aluminium. Various motors were used. His cars soon became noteworthy for their imaginative and spectacular bodywork, which to some extent reflected his earlier work with aircraft and art deco themes. The cars met with almost instant success, and celebrities like Rudolf Valentino, Maurice Chevalier and author H. G. Wells wanted to be seen in them. The cars were fast, and proved very competitive in racing. But as often happened to manufacturers in those glory days Voisin’s design skills were not matched by financial realities, and he did lose control of his business, got it back and then finally lost it in 1937. Never one to give up, and with design in his blood, at age 70 he manufactured the Biscooter, a two-seater mini-car built in Spain between 1951 and 1958. At age 80 he drove a 30-year-old Voisin 17-CV from Paris to Nice, a distance of nearly 1000 kilometres, in 14 hours. Gabriel Voisin died in 1973, but not before leaving a reputation for, and legacy of, incredible designs of both aeroplanes and cars. Cars which are now highly sought after and collectable. And discovering them on YouTube proved that dull old days don’t have to be all bad after all.

Magical Morgan

T MOTORING SERVICES

he Morgan Motor Company is marking the end of production of one of its most loved models, the 3 Wheeler, with the announcement of the P101 edition. The 3 Wheeler – which was introduced in its current form in 2011 – will cease production in 2021, once type approval on its S&S V-twin engine finishes. P101 stands for Project 101, the internal name given to the project to revive the 3 Wheeler when development began more than a decade ago. Limited to just 33 examples, the P101 was conceived by Morgan’s inhouse Design and Engineering departments to celebrate their original project, and its resulting model success

throughout its production run. Characterised by a purposeful and utilitarian aesthetic, the P101 features a range of unique components and bespoke detailing, many of which have been inspired by the prominent design features of Morgan’s three wheeled models. Black and white ceramic coated, straight cut exhausts alternate left to right. Further detailed additions include torque markers on each front tyre, a fly screen, additional louvres, exposed rivet details, and unique P101 markings. Together, they evoke the sense of excitement felt around the company when the original prototypes were being developed.

Ava inspires strongman

A

ttempting to break a world record by dragging 16 cars along a runway obviously involves a lot of perspiration, but it’s just as much about inspiration, according to Aussie strongman Troy Conley, who attempted to do just that at Bankstown Airport as part of the fundraiser Car Pull for Kids. Conley’s first attempt at pulling 16 brand-new Hyundais over a distance of five metres had been unfortunately halted by someone mistakenly putting their foot on the brake in one of the vehicles. That first effort left him “too gassed” to get through a second attempt, but then Conley found himself staring at Ava, who had come to watch his brave effort to raise money for kids just like her. The goal of Car Pull for Kids was to raise a much-needed $30,000 for Hyundai Help for Kids

partners; Little Wings, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation and Ronald McDonald House. “That third attempt only happened because Ava was there – I spent 10 minutes just looking at her, and thinking the strength kids like her have to show day in, day out, when they’re sick or injured just to keep fighting, it’s so much harder than what I was trying to do, and the least I could do was to give it one more go, and get it done”, Conley explained. Chaining himself up again to the 16 vehicles, each one with a driver on board to make sure they steered straight behind him, which all added up to more than 25 tonnes of weight, Conley somehow managed to break the moment of inertia and get them rolling. With his veins and eyes popping and his chest bursting, he just kept his eyes on Ava, and kept pushing.

HARNESS RACING

May dominates in Southland By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

It was supposed to be a battle of the sexes, but no one bothered to tell Mid Canterbury horseman Ricky May. The Methven-based legend of harness racing trekked down to Invercargill on Wednesday as part of a sixstrong men’s team to take on their female counterparts in a drivers series for the day, but before anyone had even settled into their work, May had individual honours for the day completed. He won the first three heats of the series, and by the time he’d saluted for the third time the competition horse had well and truly bolted. He won the first heat cour-

M8

tesy of a perfectly executed front-running drive on Swift Robyn, and then was equally as confident and aggressive with the Nathan Williamson-trained Kiwitrix in the next event, after working to the lead with a lap left to run. But May’s third was more of a trademark effort on the wellbacked Onesmartfella. Punted into favouritism, May had the chance to slide forward early, but elected to take cover and play the patient game, and it worked the oracle as he came down the outside of the track to hit the front just before the winning post to make it three from three. Finishing fourth in the fourth heat of the day was enough to secure May the overall driving honours for the competition, and also push

the men into a comfortable position over their female rivals. He finished the day with 33 points, almost double that of his nearest rival, Ellie Barron, on 17. The men won with a total of 77 points over the females’ 53. Mid Canterbury also had representation in the series from John Morrison, who picked up 15 points with a number of placings, and Sarah O’Reilly who finished with 10 points for the day. May’s winning treble moved him closer to the magical 3000 win mark with his official New Zealand tally now sitting at 2968 – a figure he will be looking to enhance further with a busy weekend of harness racing ahead beginning tonight at Addington Raceway.

Wilson extend lead

OPINION

Long time between drinks By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

I STANDINGS

Wilson - Babolat - Head - Yonex -

By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A four-match sweep in the doubles last week ensured interclub front-runners Team Wilson remain top dog. Their doubles dominance was the difference in the end as Wilson completed their fourth straight interclub win over Team Head 8-4. The team are unbeaten after four rounds of the open grade competition. Team Babolat edged Team Yonex 7-5 in what was a competitive joust between the two outfits.

Making his return to tennis after a two year break following a back injury was Neil McCann, who moved around the court like he’d never been away. Although he was overcome in the singles, he and Peter Leonard combined for Wilson in the doubles to beat Head pairing of Connor Brosnahan and Mike Kerr 6-1 4-6 1-0 (5). It would be one-way traffic in the other three doubles meetings, as Gareth Evans and Nishitha Maarka, Mia Lui and Josh Gilbert, and Maggie Crosby and Isobel Brook all completed straight sets victories. The teams were harder to sep-

Brosnahan, Riley Breen, Jess Aldridge and Jake Parsons (by default) were winners for Team Head. They were matched by Evans, Gilbert, Brook and Crosby for Wilson to round out the contest. The circumstances were somewhat reversed in the other interclub clash, with Babolat’s 5-3 singles win the deciding factor. Yonex’s Rhys Cromie dragged himself right back into the fight

against Tyler Leonard during the second set. It was not enough however as Leonard completed a 6-2 7-6 (74) win for Babolat. Phil Crozier, Holly Jane Feutz, John Leslie and Angela Ciora added to the Babolat singles tally. It was two wins apiece in the doubles with the showdown between Cromie and Kirwan and Ollie Bubb and Leonard the highlight on court. Leonard and Bubb clinched a thrilling win 6-3 2-6 1-0 (10-7).

t’s been a long time between drinks breaks for the Black Caps, but it’s finally back to business. The Black Caps haven’t played a match since March 13. As the Covid-19 global pandemic began to develop, the Black Caps took on Australia in an empty Sydney Cricket Ground, in what was to be the first of three ODIs. Australia ran out winners by 71 runs, before the rest of the series was cancelled as Covid-19 ramped up world-wide. Ten months later, Covid-19 is still a factor on the global landscape, but we are fortunate in New Zealand that, at the moment, it can be considered under control, to the point where international sport can be played in front of crowds. After the West Indian squad and several Black Caps players have served their 14-day quarantine, New Zealand returns to international cricket today. The West Indies were released from managed isolation in time to have warm-up matches against New Zealand A before their series against the Black Caps begins with the first of three T20s at Eden Park tonight. The Windies are the current T20 world champions, but have an ICC ranking of ninth, compared to the Black Caps at six, and their calypso style should hopefully provide an exciting return to international cricket on our screens after an elongated rugby season – if you can watch them of course. Spark Sport has the exclusive rights to this summer of cricket on its streaming service, with TVNZ broadcasting a selection of games. After the T20s the Black Caps meet the Windies in two tests in early December, in Hamilton and Wellington respectively. There are no ODIs matches. Then Pakistan will arrive for a similar three T20, two-test tour. In the new year we meet Australia in five T20s and then the Black Caps play Bangladesh in three ODIs and three T20s. The Black Caps will only play four test matches this summer. There are 14 T20s and just three ODIs. Is that a case of giving the people what they want, or putting up the product that gets more bang for their buck? The recent success of the Black Caps at test level, sitting second on the ICC rankings, has renewed my love of test cricket, and I for one would have loved to see a few more on the calendar. With the looming possibility of cancellation at any moment from another Covid-19 wave, I assume the string of shorter, sharper matches was the safer option – as well as a way to boost New Zealand cricket’s coffers.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): What needs to happen will happen. You won’t have to force it. You won’t have to arrange it, invite it, manipulate it or even think about it. It will naturally go your way today, and you can’t stop it. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): When people are nice to you, you assume that it’s just the way they are. You don’t typically stop to think, “What do they want from me?” although, today, that wouldn’t be a bad thing to privately consider. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Simplicity and economy are excellent values to uphold in times of plenty and in times of want. Regardless of your current comfort level, knowing that you are operating without a lot of waste will feel good. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Your intuition is spot-on today. Not only can you trust your free associations, first impressions and gut responses but when you act on them, you’ll be super lucky. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): When someone is trying to lead your thoughts in a particular direction, it’s a dead giveaway of selfish intent. Those who love you and want the best for you will trust your own knowing of what that is. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): There are many seeds inside of you. Becoming who you want to be is a matter of growing the right ones. Unfortunately, many seeds look alike, and you won’t totally know what’s growing until it does. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Put your powers of imagination to excellent use by dreaming up a version of your future in which you are strong in relationships and you have everything that’s needed to help a relationship thrive. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): If you only love those who love you back, how limiting life would be! Don’t be afraid to invest the best of yourself where it won’t be returned immediately. Sacrifice is essential for spiritual health. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): What you do originates with you, so how could it be anything but? Copying those you admire is part of learning. You might be surprised at how differently it comes out, though. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You give full attention to anyone who needs it. The most telling mark of character is how a person treats those who can clearly do nothing for them. This is always in the back of your mind. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You don’t give much thought to where each raindrop falls, you accept such details as part of a system. Today, forget the system. Look closer. Not every drop is rain. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You focus better when you’re interested. Sometimes your ability to hook into a subject comes down to scale. Zoom in and out to see if you can find a sweeter view.

LOCALS RULE AT METHVEN

The locals were not overawed by a chocka field as they led the way at Methven’s annual two day golf tournament at the weekend. Home advantage paid dividends at the Philip Wareing Ltd 2-day Multi Sponsored Tournament for a handful of Methven stars. Eric Grimwade, Frank Sandys, Jenny Senior and Tania Wilson were all among the big winners at the tourney, which hosted its largest field in more than a decade. About 100 teams took to the Mid Canterbury 18-hole course with more than 200 players in action.

More than 20 line-ups were visitors to the club. Wilson overcame tricky conditions to blitz the round on Sunday with a superb nett of 67, as she and Senior clinched victory in the women’s section with 210. A mere shot back was last year’s winning line-up of Sharon Burrell-Smith and Sandra Marr alongside Bev Chinn and Wendy Bruce. Next best was Catherine Knight and Emily Wilson. It was competitive on the men’s side of the draw. Paul Plimmer utilised all his intimate nous as head green-keeper to hit 65

Gary Kermode follows through from the tee during the opening day of the Methven Golf Club’s Philip Wareing Ltd Multi Sponsored Golf Tournament. early in the piece as he and Craig Middleton set the pace with 199. The pair were followed by Rakaia’s Ross Moore and James Blackburn on 201. It was well into the afternoon before Sandys and Grimwade each completed nett 71s to clinch victory with 197. The weekend was packed with individual highlights also. On Saturday, 86-year-old Bill Mason flew in the face of his experienced years with a remarkable 78 gross.

It was followed the next day by James Anderson clinching his first hole-in-one on the par 3 number 4 pin. The field included players as far-off as Mount Maunganui, with a scattering of contenders from throughout the South Island. Rakaia was awarded the best visiting team trophy. The club paid tribute to the local businesses who have supported the tournament.
