Lights, camera … Amber! It’s probably fair to call her the acting pride of Rakaia – and soon she’ll be on the big screens in New York. She’s Amber Randon, who’s an actress in a short film soon to be shown in a top international film festival in the Big Apple. That in itself is amazing. That fact that Amber also has Down syndrome makes it even more special. Read more, page 3 Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!

Wattie Bentley on show A 1959 Bentley S2, formerly owned by business magnate, Sir James Wattie, was one of the feature cars on display at the New Zealand Rolls-Royce and Bentley annual rally through Mid Canterbury. The car, currently being restored at Bruce McIlroy’s workshop, is now owned privately by a Bentley enthusiast from Gisborne. When there’s space on the Inter-Islander, it will be returned to the North Island, Bruce McIlroy said. “It was a very successful rally through inland Mid Canterbury, visiting some of the homesteads and returning to Methven via Geraldine. McIlroy said his 99-year-old RollsRoyce Silver Ghost was the oldest by far in the rally.
Locals to back Silver Lake deal By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury is backing New Zealand Rugby’s (NZR) proposal to sell 15 per cent of its commercial rights to US technology investment giants Silver Lake for $465 million. NZ Rugby has their annual general meeting on Thursday in Wellington, with the potentially lucrative deal to be voted on. Any deal must receive backing from more than 50 per cent of the country’s provincial rugby unions and the approval of the New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association. “Mid Canterbury has been
Mid Canterbury Rugby board chair Gerard Rushton kept well informed and we are confident in the due diligence of the NZR regarding [the pro-
posal],” Mid Canterbury Rugby board chairman Ged Rushton said. “Our view is that it’s a positive initiative for all New Zealand rugby but we can’t pre-empt how we are going to vote. “We have a lot to discuss on Thursday.” The offer, which has been over nine months in the making, is for Silver Lake to buy a share in a newly created NZR entity – likely to be called CommercialCo. NZR’s commercial rights are valued at over $3 billion but it has been hit hard by Covid 19, losing $40 million. Rushton said the NZR’s current model was broken and
ions, which was hoped to then flow down to club level, but the New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association has several concerns. Silver Lake is a California-based private equity firm and in 2019 it acquired a 10 per cent stake in City Football Group (CFG), which owns reigning English Premier League champions Manchester City and teams in the United States, Australia, and China. An investment in one of the most famous brands in world sport would expand the buyout giant’s $US75 billion ($NZ104 billion) portfolio of companies, most of which are technology and sports venues and teams, according to its website.
is unsustainable so needs to change. The Silver Lake proposal is a positive initiative and a great way for New Zealand Rugby to increase its revenue streams, Rushton said. “When NZR can increase its revenue stream it’s better for all the provincial unions.” Just how it could be beneficial was still confidential at this stage but if it’s good for NZR it would benefit grassroots rugby, Rushton said. “The deal would have a good flow-on effect for community rugby.” It is understood the deal would provide a significant cash boost to the provincial un-

In brief Water restrictions The Ashburton District Council has removed all summer water restrictions in place for its schemes, excluding those on a permanent hosing ban. The restrictions have been removed for Chertsey, Fairton, Hakatere, Hinds, Mayfield, Methven, Mt Somers and Rakaia. Ashburton and Lake Hood had not been on a restriction. Council infrastructure services group manager, Neil McCann, said water consumption had dropped back to manageable levels and is satisfied the restrictions are no longer required. McCann thanked residents for their “co-operation over the warmer months and for playing their part to reduce heavy consumption”. There are now no summer water restrictions in place in Mid Canterbury, however, the Montalto and MethvenSpringfield schemes remain on a permanent hosing ban.

Rakaia actress Amber Randon who has Down syndrome is to make her debut on New York screens.
Our Peninsula princess Rakaia’s Amber Randon and her fellow cast from the short film Peninsula will soon be shining on the silver screens of New York City when the New Zealand production makes its official world premiere at the high-profile Tribeca film festival. Producer Scott Flyger said the team was thrilled that Peninsula on Friday was officially selected in the shorts category of Tribeca’s 20th anniversary festival, which runs from June 9-20. “For an independent film of modest means to be selected by one of the world’s top tier festivals is no mean feat,” Flyger said. The short film was written by Fiona McKenzie and shot in Banks Peninsula in 2019. It was set to feature at overseas film festivals last year, which had to had to be delayed due to Covid. “Our cast, crew and supporters are very much part of this little film’s success and Fiona and myself thank you all,” Flyger said.
McKenzie had worked with Amber in acting classes and said she had written the story with Amber in mind. “Amber’s a strong performer and a strong character. I knew she was a strong enough person to enter a film set without blanching,” McKenzie said in an interview last year after filming was completed. “Also, when people see Amber in this film, they’ll think it’s a film about Down syndrome, which it’s not. I am so over these things having to be about disability just because people involved are disabled. Can’t we move on?” Amber’s boisterous persona and sense of humour lit up the movie set and she said the film was “a piece of cake”. “In one scene my character had to be dancing, so the crew put on Thunderstruck by AC/ DC – one of my favourites. “I busted the moves out and then off camera the whole crew was dancing with me.”

The Ashburton District Council removed the boil water notice in place for the Rakaia supply on Friday and residents can now consume their drinking water as usual. A boil water notice had been in place as a precaution since April 19 when the council carried out drinking water infrastructure upgrades in the town. Due to the nature of the work, which saw the water bore head raised above ground, a precautionary notice was put in place as a safeguard for residents. Mandatory water testing returned clear results, and the council removed the notice. The town’s bore water head was raised above ground in order for the scheme to re-attain a secure bore water status.
Sneak peek Several strategically placed holes have been included throughout the nearly 167 metres of installed hoardings around the construction site of the new $42 million Library and Civic Centre. In addition to information and artist renderings of the new building along the wall, the circles – about the size of a large fruit – were also included as part of the design which the council’s contractors can cut out as “peek holes” for visitors to the site to view the progress of the project in Baring Square East.

Irrigation scheme ‘will hold farmers to account’ By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
The boss of a water co-operative in Mid Canterbury believes the onus is on its farmers after a controversial irrigation scheme renewal was given the go-ahead. Replacement consent for the Mayfield Hinds Valetta (MHV) irrigation scheme was granted after an independent commissioner released a decision last week. The 10-year consent is subject to a series of conditions, including a 15 per cent reduction in nitrogen losses by 2025 and 25 per cent by 2030, auditing of farm environment plans, monitoring ground and surface water quality and remediation and response plans. Environment Canterbury (ECan) can review the consent if improvements are unable to be achieved. “This consent is granted on the basis that the significant adverse cumulative effects on the receiving environment will be reduced and there will be measurable environmental improvements within the consent term,” the hearing commissioner’s report states. The report said the demands on MHV would be “challenging but achievable”. “It is a significant step in the right direction, and it is now up to the ap-
plicant (MHV Water) to demonstrate that the necessary reductions can be made and are sufficient to result in environmental improvements.” Some environmental groups have opposed the consent bid, due to fears that higher levels of nitrate would be discharged, which they said could affect drinking water. MHV chief executive Melanie Brooks said the renewal being granted provided greater clarity of what is expected of the cooperative. “(It provides) a higher level of certainty and holds our farmers to account on achieving improved water quality outcomes. “Importantly, with confirmed consent conditions we are now able to refine our internal programmes … to all meet or exceed the new conditions.” The public was unable to make submissions on the renewal application because they were able to do so as part of the original consent process. Brooks added that the co-operative had reached out to many concerned parties on the replacement renewal. “I look forward to continuing these conversations and welcome more discussion where people have concerns. “I am proud of the work that our farmers are doing, and are continuing to do, to effect improved environmental outcomes and I know the granting of this consent will support further improvements.”

With the vaccine, it’s all possible Our immunity against COVID-19 is incredibly important. Because it brings more possibilities for us all. Possibilities like keeping our way of life intact; our kids being able to learn without worrying about interruptions; or being able to plan gatherings with whānau, or team trips away, without fear of them getting cancelled. Immunity can bring us all this, as well as more certainty in our jobs, and more confidence in our businesses. With the strength of an immune system made up of all of us, together we can, and will, create more freedom, more options, and more possibilities for everyone.

Students strike an Anzac chord
‘We can make sense of the feeling of freedom we have’ By Daryl Holden daryl.h@theguardian.co.nz
Take a bow Milli Sullivan and Thomas Patterson. Our war vets would have nodded in approval. Ashburton College’s head girl and boy stole the show with mature, insightful speeches as part of the Ashburton RSA’s civic service and wreath laying Anzac Day ceremony before hundreds at Baring Square West on Sunday morning. The 17-year-olds were so poised in their delivery, and spoke with such assurance, that it was hard to believe they were at all nervous, even though it was such an important, never to be forgotten moment before a very big public audience on one of three Anzac Day commemorative services in Ashburton. “To be honest, I don’t even remember even going up there (on the steps of the cenotaph to deliver her speech),’’ said a smiling and relieved Milli, proudly wearing Korean War medals from her great grandfather. Milli told the crowd she struggled to comprehend what our servicemen and women coped with through the horrors of war, but she made a telling point about the Covid-enforced national lockdown a year ago when life was turned upside down for many. “This provided a mere glimpse of what our courageous service people had to horrifically sacrifice 104 years ago on the shores of Gallipoli,’’ Milli said. “Imagine being a parent, grandparent or sibling, and having your 18-year-old family member sent off to war before being almost old enough to have even started a career. “Or having to watch your husband, a returned home soldier, who mentally struggles to return his life to reality. “Although we cannot fully understand those depths (of wartime horror), we can make sense of the feeling of freedom we have been rewarded with from those heroic efforts.’’ Fellow Year 13 colleague, Thomas Patterson, gave a lesson for all rugby players, who have previously talked of going into battle on the footy field.
Making their mark: Ashburton College’s head girl and boy, Milli Sullivan and Thomas Patterson, impressed in their Anzac Day public speeches.
“We say we are going to war and are going to put our bodies on the line,’’ Thomas said. “But, after giving it some thought, I realised that in no way, shape or form is that truly comparable. “When we (rugby players) say we are going to put our bodies on the line, those men and women were putting their lives
on the line. After the games we complain about our bruises, but bruises for us were wounds for them. “We get to go home to do our best to recover and prepare for the following week. But for some soldiers, coming home wasn’t an option.’’ See Anzac Day photos, page 9

Social housing stocks to be boosted Across the Ashburton District there are now 192 homes owned by Kainga Ora, with this number set to be boosted by about 20 over the next two years. The boost to the district’s social housing stocks has been ongoing since 2018 when four new homes were built in Trevors Road and another six in Allens Road. All of these were one bedroom properties. Along with its new build programme,
Kainga Ora is retro-fitting its properties and up to 30 in Ashburton will undergo an upgrade over the next few years. The retrofit programme includes improving heating, full insulation of walls, ceilings and floors, double glazing, improved air tightness and ventilation. Additional work could include upgrading bathrooms and kitchens and converting homes to a more modern, open plan living layout. Improving ac-
cessibility will also be part of the project. The agency’s current housing stocks are made up of 22 one bedroom propertires, 68 two bedroom, 85 three bedroom and 17 four bedroom homes. Kainga Ora was established in 2019 from a merger of Housing New Zealand, and KiwiBuild to become a new Crown entity to help address homelessness and home affordability.

Anzac Day came in on a wing and a prayer at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. It might have been a day early, but a capacity audience appreciated Anzac Stories and Songs from the Front Line on Saturday, April 24. The creative came from Jenny Beach and Sally and Roger Farr and was presented with conviction by a company of about 30 singers, dancers and instrumentalists. Wing And A Prayer was one of many highlights. It’s a powerful number and the company stylised it by adopting a bomber formation as they sang. Sometimes Anzac Day tributes can be a romp through 30 songs with the audience joining the singalongs – a once over lightly – but Ashburton’s tribute had an extra message. Letters from local families were gathered and read with images from the servicemen appearing on the screen. Sometimes they were lengthy, but it didn’t matter. This was Ashburton people paying tribute to their own. The choreography was fun, sometimes metronomic, but kept the momentum going. Special mention must be made of the simple but effective set. The symbolism was subtle. It’s amazing the impact that sandbags can achieve. The screen images enhanced the singing and took the authority of the show to another level. The trio who compiled and directed the show are to be congratulated and should consider the theatrical expression “back by popular demand” sometime in the future.

Dairying receivership a warning By Daryl Holden daryl.h@theguardian.co.nz
T
he collapse of the high-profile van Leeuwen dairy operation in South Canterbury would have sent some shockwaves through the industry. It must also serve as a warning to others. The business is owned by farmers Aad and Wilma van Leeuwen, who in 2017 were mentioned in NBR’s Rich List as having a reported estimated net worth of $60 million. But last week, that all counted for nothing when the business went into receivership when receivers took control of the Van Leeuwen Dairy Group, whose multi-farming operation was regarded as a national leader in high-tech operations with an emphasis on robotic milking. It’s a sad state of affairs and many will wonder where it all went so wrong for such a significant dairying operation, which in 2017 also had to deal with the stigma of being the first place in New Zealand where the deadly cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis was detected on its South Canterbury farm. It’s true that later on it was confirmed that the disease actually originated on a farm in central Southland but the initial finding on the van Leeuwens’ property would have been devastating for their business. Yes, the van Leeuwens were reportedly paid out more than $6 million by the Ministry of Primary Industries for M. bovis compensation and they’re still apparently seeking further pay-outs for associated costs. But what happens next? Who could end up buying the farms and where does it leave the van Leeuwens themselves? No one has publicly heard from the van Leeuwens, who quite clearly have more pressing issues to deal with. The only thing we can say for certain is that the whole receivership episode shows just how quickly things can change. And another thing . . . Tomorrow really is a massive day for New Zealand rugby. That’s when the country’s provincial unions, including Mid Canterbury, vote at the NZR annual meeting whether to support the move to sell 15 per cent of the national body’s commercial rights to US technology investment giants Silver Lake for $465 million. NZR has been seriously considering the deal for some time because it badly needs more moolah to stay afloat for years to come because its financial model is just not sustainable and the impact of Covid saw it lose about $40 million, about half its cash reserves. Thus, a massive cash injection seems like a no-brainer but at what cost to our game? That’s the sticking point. What would Silver Lake expect as a key shareholder that we haven’t been told? More meaningless games in the United States perhaps? Or maybe an expectation for a breakaway league similar to that which fell over embarrassingly in football recently when a proposed European Super League rebel competition collapsed after public opposition? Who knows. The only thing we do know is that the future of our national game rests on decisions being made tomorrow. Let’s hope they get it right.

Anzac spirit as strong as ever
T
his past weekend, thousands of people right around our district turned out to pay their respects at our local Anzac Day ceremonies and I was proud to see that the spirit of the day and its importance to our people has not wavered over the years. Sunday 25 April marked 106 years since the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli thousands of miles from home, giving rise to a legend that has now endured for more than a century. Given the very different circumstances we found ourselves in last year, it was a relief to be able to resume our traditional activities to commemorate the day on Sunday. In Ashburton, hundreds arrived at the Baring Square West cenotaph for a very moving dawn service, before further services took place at the cemetery and again back at the cenotaph for the wreath laying at 11am. Hinds, Mayfield, Methven and Rakaia also hosted services.

ASHBURTON’S MAYOR
Driving through town, you may have seen remnants of last year’s spirits back again, with several households installing red poppy crafts around their letterbox and gardens. I was reminded of the lengths we went to as a nation and community in 2020 to find a way to come together and overcome physical distancing to continue honouring our fallen service personnel. Although separated by necessity due to the pandemic, the #StandAtDawn campaign provided a poignant way to remain together in an act of solidarity. Last year, many stood at dawn by their letterboxes or inside their homes to remember our brave servicemen and women who gave their lives to defend our nation.
Even though we were able to resume our usual services this year, the challenges we have faced since March 2020 were not forgotten. If anything, it is as if the pandemic has provided new perspectives and insights into just some of what those brave men and women faced all those years ago: the separation, the loss of loved ones, world-wide upheaval and uncertainty. Standing side by side with other attendees at Sunday’s services, it was clear to all that no matter the time that passes, Anzac Day remains as important to us as ever. We continue to honour those who have given their lives and remember the sacrifices they made so that we can enjoy the freedoms and liberties that we have today. Time may continue to stretch our country’s military histories further and further into the past, but the memory of those who served will forever live on in Anzac Day and in the values of our serving personnel.
Fear of overeating led to binging and loss of trust around food
R
achelle was a woman just like we are. Happy, social and very active mum of 5. She’d led a fulfilled life and had a great work-life balance. But Rachelle had already spent 30 years jumping from one diet to another. She started her first diet as a 6- year-old child. Her weight was cycling up and down and despite trying everything the number on the weigh scale was growing no matter how strict she was with food. Rachelle didn’t know what a normal portion was anymore. She ate like a bird and exercised like a professional athlete just to feel angry at herself for not being able to lose the weight she wanted. Rachelle even underwent gastric bypass surgery and lost 50kg, but within a few years she had it all back and more. When Rachelle reached out to me for help, she stated that she just wanted to feel normal and live a normal life without fearing to eat and feeling like a constant failure on her wellbeing journey. She wanted to be a good example for her growing kids. The problem wasn’t in what she ate. Rachelle was eating the healthiest diet, to her knowledge. She avoided all junk food, did not drink alcohol nor any caloric beverages such as Coke, juice or latte. The problem was that Rachelle was so afraid to eat until she felt full, that she was keeping her body in constant deprivation that occasionally led to uncontrollable binge eating. After years of listening to outer guidance this is a very common thing when it comes to hunger and fullness. You learn to suppress your hunger, to stay sane
By Vera Prazak
HOLISTICALLY SPEAKING
with all the restrictive diets going on and you learn to survive on the bare minimum of food possible. Which only pushes your body to extremes. Your body slows your metabolism right down and adjusts the way it distributes and stores energy. Your hormonal balance is shifted to extremes and your body shuts down some “non-vital” functions such as your reproductive system = no libido. The worst thing is that after each diet your metabolism will stay down for many months when you resume “normal” eating, that’s why the increase in the initial weight. You need to rebuild the trust of your body. Teach it that it is safe to burn the calories you consume and not to store them and restore your metabolism to normal (1) range. Rachelle didn’t know how to recognise a mild or moderate hunger. She ate only when she was extremely hungry and still felt guilty that she couldn’t push it any further. She never ate until she was full, she was so afraid that she would overeat and therefore “blow” the diet, that she always stopped only when she no longer felt hungry. Letting yourself get to extreme hunger and then not eating until you are full only sends your body the message that there is a shortage of food and therefore “life saving” mechanisms must be put in place.
On days when she, as she stated, “lost her willpower”, she could not make herself stop eating. She kept snacking the whole day and did not feel satisfied no matter how much food she ate. She felt so much shame that she couldn’t control her need for food and once she regained control she implemented even harder rules on herself, “to get back on track”. We worked together with Rachelle on learning how to read and respond to her mild and moderate hunger and allow herself to eat until she felt comfortably full. This simple shift has allowed her to feel safe around food. She did not suffer from horrible hunger pangs, nor felt that she
needed to control how much she ate and stop when appropriate. A few weeks later Rachelle started to feel more energised, she didn’t feel so preoccupied with food and felt calmer throughout the day. Months later, after allowing herself to eat food she liked and until she felt satisfied, her health improved and her weight shifted more to where her body felt comfortable. Listening to your hunger and fullness cues after years of dieting can be confusing, but it’s the first step on your healing journey to food freedom. On the May 1 I will be holding a FREE online workshop diving into Fear of Fullness and How to regain back the satisfaction of
eating. You can simply join The Radiant Women, Intuitive Eating community on Facebook, where the workshop will be held and meanwhile dive into my Free Intuitive eating mini-course (browse to my website www. veraprazak.com/study) Vera Prazak is a holistic nutritionist and runs the growing Food Freedom for Women group on Facebook. Hefty fine for contamination of Mt Somers waterway
O’Connor gets to view new seed cleaning plant The Minister of Agriculture got a close-up look at Luisetti Seeds’ new multi-million-dollar seed and cereal processing plant at Ashburton on Tuesday. Damien O’Connor was on site for the official opening of Luisetti’s Petkus plant which is the biggest of its type outside of the United States. It uses cutting-edge technology to process ryegrass, fescue, cocksfoot, and cereals with minimal dressing losses and maximum efficiency. Operations director Vincent Luisetti said the plant will double the seed cleaning capacity at the company’s Ashburton site. PHOTO SUPPLIED
Receivers take over control of Van Leeuwen Dairy Group RNZ The dairy company where the cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis was first detected in 2017 has gone into receivership. Auckland-based Calibre Partners said it took control of the Van Leeuwen Dairy Group on Wednesday last week. The business is owned by South Canterbury farmers Aad and Wilma van Leeuwen, who have appeared on the
NBR rich list in the past. Their operation was a national leader in high-tech barn farming operations. Last year, the Van Leeuwen Group put up for sale nine properties of the 13 dairy farms and six dry stock farms it owned. M. bovis hit the Van Leeuwen farms in July 2017 and they became embroiled in a legal battle with the Ministry of Primary Industries over compensation for costs incurred in dealing with the outbreak.
A company has been fined $120,000 after discharging a chemical that entered a Mt Somers water race killing hundreds of fish. Harrison Spraying Services Limited pleaded guilty in court to discharging a contaminant onto land where it entered a stock water race. The offending occurred after a company truck driver filled the truck with water from the stock water race. During the process, an agrichemical escaped from the tank due to the driver overfilling the tank. The agrichemical-contaminated water then flowed into the stock water race. At the sentencing on April 21, Judge Hassan ordered Harrison Spraying Services Limited to pay $120,000 for the offending. The stock water race, which runs through Mt Somers village, is part of a stock water network managed by the Ashburton District Council. Environment Canterbury (ECan) staff found the discharge affected about a six
kilometre stretch of the race. It is estimated that between 600 to 1000 fish died, including brown trout, common bullies, native kokopu and kewai (freshwater crayfish). However, staff believe this number could be higher as there were parts of the race that they could not inspect due to accessibility issues. Inspections by staff about six months after the incident found that the discharge was still having an effect with an absence of fish species downstream of where the incident occurred. At this stage, the long-term effects on the stock water race are unknown. ECan’s Ashburton zone lead Janine Holland welcomed the fine. “We are satisfied at the outcome of the sentencing and hope it serves as a reminder to all businesses about their responsibility to protect the environment. “Ignoring these responsibilities can have devasting and far-reaching impacts on our aquatic species,” Holland said.

METHVEN
Success for the Strappers The Strappers Syndicate enjoyed local success at Methven on Monday when Maren Franco saluted the judge.
By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
There were plenty of reasons for the locals to smile on the final day of the grass track racing season at Methven on Monday, but for one particular ownership group – the smiles were a mile wide. New Zealand’s second eldest harness racing syndicate – the Strappers Syndicate – which was formed in the early 80s, found their way into the winners’ circle when Maren Franco burst through for Rakaia’s Leo O’Reilly to win impressively. Established in Mid Canterbury, The 11-strong group were all present on Monday and revelled in the success of their very promising pacer. “I think we might have a bit of fun with her,” syndicate manager, Chris Morrison said. “She’s only been off the place five times, so to win at her second start was a very good effort and she should
just keep getting better.” While membership has chopped and changed over the years, many of the original members are still in the group, which tasted its first victory back in 1983 when Gentian won at Waikouaiti for Terry May, with Ricky May doing the driving.
Maren Franco has the finish line in sight.
The Mays have been responsible for handling many of the syndicates’ horses, although others have also been trained by the likes of Ben Waldron, Brian Saunders and Dick Prendergast over the years. Maren Franco was the replacement for the syndicate’s last horse, Tabitha Franco, whose promising career was cut short by a paddock accident last year. The loss of her coincided with Ricky May’s accident at Omakau and while May was on the recovery path, a decision was made to send Maren Franco to O’Reilly to train – the first he’s trained for the group. “Leo’s done a great job with her. “We actually held a vote among the syndicate members to see who would train her for us and Leo was chosen, it’s the first horse he’s trained for the syndicate and
we couldn’t be happier.” After a promising third at Methven earlier this month, Maren Franco was heavily favoured to win on Monday, but O’Reilly had to plot the perfect path from a tricky spot before she burst through and won with plenty in store. The win capped a good day for O’Reilly who also picked up placings with maiden pacers Daggy Lamb and Alene, and was fourth with his only other drive, Some Time. The Strappers Syndicate is only bettered in terms of age by the Southland based Setarip Syndicate, who also tasted success this month when Black Ops won. Maren Franco was joined on the winners list on Monday by fellow local Betterthanhope, who turned more than a few heads with her impressive debut win for John Hay early in the day.
SOUTHLAND OAKS
Sweet Belle snares Oaks spot By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
An 11th hour victory might just have been enough for Mid Canterbury filly, Sweet Belle to work her way into Southland Oaks contention. The promising daughter of Sweet Lou grabbed the fourth win of her career on Friday at Winton and in doing so catapulted her name into contention for two important races that remain on the calendar for three-year-old fillies this season. The first of those is this weekend’s time-honoured Southland Oaks at Ascot Park Raceway in Invercargill. Entry for the race is determined by stake earnings in races hosted by Southern Harness Racing during the season. Sweet Belle’s efforts in the deep south netted her enough to be ranked 13th on the order of entry – but confirmation from officials over the weekend suggested that the top 12 horses which would make up the field would see a couple of withdrawals that will push Sweet Belle into the starting line-up. Friday’s win also boosted the Gerard O’Reilly trained filly into the top 12 for the rich Harness
May moves to 2989 NZ winners
Outstanding Mid Canterbury filly, Sweet Belle. Jewels which are to be held at Cambridge over Queen’s Birthday Weekend in early June. Worth $100,000, the threeyear-old fillies feature is always one of the highlights of the day’s racing. Raced by Richard Ashworth, Bryan McGirr, Martin Hickman and Stewart Ashworth, Sweet Belle has earned just over $21,000 this season – a far
cry from her initial purchase price for the quartet of just a few thousand dollars. She’s also paid up and eligible to contest the New Zealand Oaks at Addington later this month should the group choose to be there as well. The win gave O’Reilly his 10th training success for the season, his best tally in over a decade and moved him to
within four of his personal best tally of 14 which he set back in the 2007 and 2008 racing season. Meanwhile, Ricky May moved to within one of the nervous nineties in his bid to reach 3000 New Zealand driving wins on the weekend. May was successful with Hands On for good mate Brendon Hill at the Rangiora harness meeting on Sunday and in winning set up what was believed to be a potential world record – that lasted just a few hours. Rangiora carded two races over the sprint distance of 1390 metres, an unheard of distance in harness racing in this part of the world. May and Hands On came from off the speed to run down the leaders in the shadows of the post to claim success, but their time for the sprint journey was bettered later in the day when Archman won in the hands of John Dunn. May now sits on 2989 New Zealand wins, and gets a good opportunity this week to extend that further with racing opportunities across the South Island.
The four-year-old mare came off the speed to run past her rivals with plenty of authority and in doing so continued Hay’s great run of form as both a trainer and a driver this season. Sarah O’Reilly found herself in the winners’ circle as well when she produced a timely run on Spanna to win for Selwyn trainer, Alan Sewell. Locals in around the action picking up placings included Alene and Daggy Lamb but also Kansas City Jim (3rd) for Steve Lock, DD’s Super Stuart (2nd) for Carl Markham, Iron Woman (3rd) for Warren Stapleton and Call This Fun (2nd) for Alan Ford. Racing resumes back at Methven in September for the new season, but Mid Canterbury keeps rolling with the Ashburton Trotting Club set down to race this weekend.
RICCARTON
Vermont goes close If Ashburton trainers Sarah and Matt Smith were worried about what’s next for local galloper, Vermont then those fears were eased on Saturday at Riccarton. Off the back of a couple of frustrating efforts, Matt Smith spoke last week about pondering the future for the grey mare, but she turned it all around at the right time to run a bold second on Saturday – going down to the bob of a head right on the line. Given a dream run just off the speed by Corey Campbell, the six-year-old wound into her work beautifully up the Riccarton straight and denied all challenges but one, with an in-form Volvik coming over the top to win by the narrowest of margins for Kylie Williams and Lyn Prendergast. “We weren’t expecting that,” Sarah Smith said on Saturday night. “We’ve always thought she’d stay a bit, but she’s had a fair few hiccups along the way.” Close to the rank outsider of the field, Vermont paid $8 for the place in what was a very good field, and the Smith duo are now presented with a number of options for the mare, who has shown a strong liking for softer tracks in the past meaning the winter months could be quite profitable based off Saturday’s performance. Racing action in the South Island this week comes from Wingatui on Thursday and then from Phar Lap Raceway in Timaru on Sunday.

NETBALL
Season kicks off 24 hours early There’s an earlier start to Premier Netball in Mid Canterbury this season than just Thursday night’s opening round. The hotly contested competition officially kicks off with the first round on Thursday night at the EA Networks Centre, but 24 hours earlier play will hit the courts as the final spot in the Premier 1 grade is determined. The winner will return to the EA Networks Centre on Thursday night and lock horns with United A in the first official round of play on what should be an intriguing night of netball. The season begins with a 6.15 clash between College A and Celtic A, before there’s a repeat of last year’s final when Hampstead A and Methven A kick off at 7.15pm in what should be the match-up of the night. United and the winner of Wednesday night’s game will play in the late round which begins at 8.15pm. Barker continues hot run on the squash court By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton Squash Club’s Lee Barker continued his outstanding start to the Midlands Squash season, when he added his second title within a month on the weekend. Barker, who won the Ashburton Open, picked up the Mayfield Open title in the Men’s Open competition on the weekend – managing to go one better than his second placing in the Hinds Open seven days earlier. But he did manage to extract some revenge on Scott Butterick, who had beaten him at Hinds, by winning the final on Saturday evening to continue his strong start to the calendar year with plenty of squash still ahead. The weekend’s tournament – the first Midlands Squash event held at Mayfield in a number of years – was considered a resounding success by all and sundry, with good entries and some really competitive squash played over the course of the weekend. Aside from Barker’s
der way on May 8, with the Year 3 and 4 competition starting on May 7. A full season preview of Premier Netball for 2021, plus a wrap of round one action will appear in this week’s Weekend Guardian.
victory in the Open Men’s, Christina Lima emerged victorious in taking out the Open Women’s title, beating Brenda Hall in the final. Brad Clouston took out the Men’s
A division by getting the better of Jimmy Hunn in their final match, while the Women’s A title went the way of Nicky Dryland, who beat Gill Frew. In the exceptionally competitive lower grade men’s divisions, Hamish Kelynack won Men’s B over Simon Kennedy, Dan Clemens beat Ben Averill in the final to win Men’s C grade, and Dan McKerchar took out Men’s D by beating Rupert Averill in that final. The Midlands season takes a break from the Mid Canterbury season for a few weeks now, with the Ashburton Celtic Open the next big ticket event on the calendar. In between now and then though, a number of players of all levels will be heading to Geraldine for the Geraldine Open on May 7 and May 8, with both the Timaru and Mackenzie opens scheduled for later in the month of May.
Lee Barker is right on top of his game on court at the moment, adding the Mayfield title to his collection last weekend.
Double header draws all round By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
It was a case of double-draw delight, but maybe a little disappointment for the Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s team in Canterbury’s Division One hockey on the weekend. The new side to the competition played a double-header with a match on Friday night at Nha Puna Wai before returning on Saturday – and both games ended in draws. Taking on Rangiora on Friday night, the Mid Canterbury side found themselves down by a goal early but settled into their work and James Wright found the back of the goal to bring the scores back to level. Rangiora answered back quickly near the end of the first quarter and grabbed the lead again only for Dante Vannini to grab Mid Canterbury’s second quickly in the second quarter. At 2-all after halftime, Vannini grabbed his second courtesy of a well-placed shot from a rebound, only for Rangiora to grab their third as well in what was becoming a very to-and-fro match. When Rangiora scored their fourth, the match threatened to escape from the Mid Canterbury side but a slickly worked play saw Zac White grab a goal and bring things back to level again. Despite efforts by both sides, the deadlock couldn’t be broken and the match ended at 4-all. Then, on Saturday, the Mid Canterbury men took on Carlton Redcliffs and battled out another draw. It was big comeback from the green and golds, who found themselves down 3-1 early in the second half before two late goals brought back the scores to level where they remained for the rest of the match. With a win and two draws from their four matches, Mid Canterbury aren’t too far off the pace in what is fast becoming a very even looking competition. Reports from Christchurch on the weekend from neutral observers suggested however that if Mid Canterbury play as well as they did against Carlton Redcliffs they’ll go far in the competition. This week the side heads to Marist Park at St Bede’s College to take on High School Old Boys/Burnside who have managed just one win from their four matches so far this season.

Extra time loss for MC United By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury United came within just a few minutes of an upset first round victory in Chatham Cup action on the weekend, the first of two matches for the side over the long weekend. Playing Western in Ashburton on Saturday afternoon, the Mid Canterbury side were the better of the two teams in the majority of the battle, stringing together some quality play. And when goal-scoring supremo, Luke Martin banged one into the back of the net in the 73rd minute, dreams of a preliminary round victory seemed reality for the home side. But a late goal, four minutes into added time, by Western levelled the score and the match went to extra time. That all-level score quickly became 1-2 in favour of the visitors, and shortly after another Western goal looked to have buried all hope for the Mid Canterbury United side. But another goal to Martin in the 120th minute of the match gave renewed hope. Despite some hectic and passionate attempts from the Mid Canterbury side they were unable to grab a third and went down 3-2 in a nail-biting clash. The side then backed up on Monday in the opening round of the English Cup, where they took
on the powerful Selwyn United Football Club, and the day ran true to form with all of the higher placed sides progressing through to the next round of the competition. Mid Canterbury United had Selwyn a little nervous though early in the match. Martin grabbed his third for the weekend and Mid Canterbury trailed 1-2 at the halftime break and were in a with a bit of a chance. But Selwyn found a second-gear in the second half, scoring six unanswered goals to win the match 8-1 at the final whistle. On Saturday afternoon, the Mid Canterbury United Reserves kicked off a big weekend as the curtain-raiser to the main match when they took on Western Reserves. An early goal had them trailing quickly 0-1, but Mid Canterbury kept up to their tasks and pushed hard for an equaliser, but it didn’t come. Western grabbed a second and then a third to go out 3-0, but the young side showed plenty of heart and were rewarded with a goal late in the match from the boot of Ben Chute to gain some momentum back for their upcoming matches. Both the Senior Men and the Reserves side get a great opportunity to bounce back this weekend when they host Universities Football Club at home on Saturday afternoon. In both competitions, the two
sides are evenly poised on the points table, setting up what should be two really exciting fixtures which Mid Canterbury teams will be targeting as matches they are more than capable of winning.

And there’s an extra carrot of encouragement dangling in front of them too. Players from the competition will be invited to trial for the Mid Canterbury side, who have their eye on a couple of competitions later in the season, so impressing those in charge of the representative team will also be of high importance for many players. Competition newbies, Checkers have drawn the bye in the opening round of the competition, but Johnston said two good games would unfold. At 6pm, Nomads and Wildlife will kick off the new season in the opening game of the round before Team Donkey and Newlands battle it out in the second game at 7.30pm – a repeat of last year’s final to begin the new year.

Our mini speaker was member Wendy Cotton who was an excellent and entertaining speaker with an astonishing life story which captivated our members. We won’t report the detail of Wendy’s deeply personal story. Wendy grew up in Christchurch where she was fortunate to have a horse. Horses and riding have been a big part of her life. She has lived in a number of places in the South Island including Marlborough and Darfield. She and husband Robert moved to Ashburton a few years ago. Our main speaker was Daryl Holden who recently became editor of the Ashburton Guardian. He has worked in newspapers both in NZ and overseas. He is a Southlander and worked at the Southland Times, which was a Fairfax paper (now Stuff). Fairfax had 90 weekly papers at the time but were cutting back, so he took a corporate role with Ballance Fertilizer. Later he worked with LIC, another agribusiness company. Both these companies gave great training and work experience to develop his career. Daryl believes making many small gains can make a real difference, and cites the British Olympic Cycling team as a good example of multiple small changes making many small gains, leading to a gold medal performance. When the opportunity to come to the Guardian arose, he accepted because he has family connections here and in Christchurch. The main difference between the Guardian and its major competitor is that the reader buys the Guardian, so there has to be reasons to want to buy. A three day publication schedule works well for some regional papers in the UK. Local papers must connect with the local community and Daryl told us of some stories he had done in his career which achieved great reader response including a recent Ashburton story about the Parent Centre Funding. Captions under photos are the most read items and the small stories in the side briefs are also well read. Many readers are reluctant to read right through long stories. Social media is becoming more important, and the Guardian Facebook page has 13,500 followers. Meetings second Tuesday of month, Seniors Centre 206 Cameron St, 9.30am. Visitors welcome. The Ashburton MSA Bowling Green has been a hive of activity this season. Margaret Lamont, one of our long term members. She did so love playing the piano for my Balmoral dance group. Margaret Twamley has a piano stool for sale $20.00. Ring her on 3072884. She was first up on Elizabeth McCormick’s programme, playing Neville Mckay’s lovely organ. He would be chuffed to hear it played on a club night. Margaret played “The rose” “Marena Elena” and “Blue smoke. Rose and Audrey then on piano. (welcome back guys) “Adious” and the ever favourite “Trish trash” The accordion group almost up to full strength (10 out of 12 isn’t bad) 3 super brackets plus a well deserved encore. Top notch. Ann then on piano. Played so nicely as usual. ”Hope” “There’s a song inside my head’ and “Skye boat song” Michael concluded the evening with some super choices, and played them well. (I wish I had a Tyros) that’s not the name of a song, it’s a wish of mine. “Blueberry hill” “how important can it be” “Somewhere my love” “Wish you were here”” Chantilly lace (Big Boppa) “Brown eyed girl” and ‘Dianna” Gee there’s some nice songs around. Thank you Elizabeth, well done, and thank you Karen (B) for stepping in to help with supper.

Quite a few people must have been away for the long weekend, as the playing groups both days were a bit on the low side. The scores however, were still top notch. The best of the foursomes on Saturday went to Gordy Crawford and Shane Beaven with a great effort, posting 67.5, a couple clear of Tom Blacklow and Matt Tait. The best of the mixed pairs and winners of the AM Bruce Cup were Wendy and Eric Parr with 73, well deserved to wonderful supporters of our mixed golf days. On Monday we had our annual Battle of the Sexes Baker Trophy, again, not a massive field, but some good scores. Visiting Mayfield superstar Logan Tasker led the way with a super 39 points, just pipping his sister, Hilary Lovett on countback. Men took out the rest of the top prizes with Perry Hunt and Paul Greer to the fore. Then in line with Einstein’s law of action has equal and opposite reaction. The men also had the worst scores, we won’t name names, but Ross, Davo and Terry you know who you are. When all the scores were averaged out the Ladies snaffled the trophy by 0.09 of a shot. Well done ladies. This Saturday we have the Murray Webb Trophy best ball pairs stroke. This has RMF Cup points on offer and is also the qualify for the Watson Cup, the clubs major pairs competition. Top 16 pairs get into the Watson cup, which then runs in knockout form for the following 4 weeks. Grab your partners, make sure you are available for all the rounds and get your names in. Good luck. This Sunday we have 6 mens teams in pennants action. The Top Guns have a double header down at Levels, we have 2 teams in the Holmes this year, so hopefully a good year is in store. Terry and the Redpath boys are at Point starting their season off. Shane’s team will be going all out to continue their fine form in the Alex grade, and in the Pattison grade Tom’s pups and Paddy’s old dogs are
both at Gleniti continuing their battle. Results and stories next week. Till then, good golfing.

Saturday saw the closing day of the bowling season roll around the majority of club members in attendance competing for the Hec Harper Trophy in an all day tournament. This tournament was taken out by the team Tony Inwood, Charlie Cleghorn, Russell Ward, Alan Huband winning the trophy by one end in what was a very even competition. Following the bowls was prize giving and a enjoyable social get together with a lovely tea prepared by in house chef John Moffatt who done us proud. Thanks John. In the unfortunate absence of president Linton Muir, Vice President Neil Stuthridge presented our trophy winners for season, these being: Open Singles Tony Inwood. Junior singles Shane Calder; Colts singles Gus Hurrell Open Pairs Tony Inwood, John Moffatt; Junior Pairs Shane Calder Neil Stuthridge; Colts pairs Gus Hurrell Russell Ward. Open Triples Mike Skilling Shane Calder Trevor Pearce. Open Fours Linton Muir Charlie Cleghorn Neil Stuthridge, Alan Huband. During the season club members had success in club tournaments throughout the district with Linton Muir, Shane Cader Colin Dennis Dave Muir claiming the Edna Lowe Trophy at Methven and our team of Mike Skilling Ray Mitchell Trevor Pearce taking out Ashburton’s Milsom Cup. In the Sub Centre events our club has had its best season for years with Tony Inwood and Linton Muir taking out the Pairs, with Shane Calder winning the Champion Of Champion singles and combining with Trevor Pearce to claim the COC pairs title top effort. First year bowler Gus Hurrell also taking out C O C title for colts singles joining forces with fellow first year bowler Russell Ward to claim the Champion Of Champions Pairs title a top effort. With the competitive season closing and the top being taken off our green at a later date we have decided to keep the green going as long as the weather stays suitable with playing Thursday and Saturday afternoon these days will be open to any bowlers who wish to turn up. Our winter bowls program indoors will be delayed by a month this year as we a hosting the Sub Centre Centenial and prize giving 14th May.

We continue to have good turnouts on Club Days with good numbers taking part in the weekly Tuesday competition. In March we had our Club mixed rawn doubles with 10 couples taking part. This was won by Lyn Allison and Richard Browne. Runners-up were Garry Kilgour and Marion Harrison. For the first time we held a competition for the over 80’s and this was won by Mick Little, with Rosemary McLaughlin coming Runner up. We had a team take part in the Otago Triples at Taieri in April, and Karen and
Neville Bensdorp and Richard Browne finished Runners up. Our Stephen Kyle Memorial Mixed Doubles had 24 entries which was the most we have had enter in this Tournament. 25 of these players were from our Club. Other players were from Alexandra, Dunedin City, Caversham, Christchurch, Papanui, Ascot and Woolston which made it a good competition. This was won by Karen Bensdorp and her Christchurch partner. Third was Jan Guilford and her Ascot partner. Many of our other players were well placed. The following day we hosted the Ashburton Doubles, was won by a Christchurch team. Ashburton players that were 3rd = were Karen Bensdorp, Ellen Pithie, and Marion Harrison. Next month is our AGM and our Mens Drawn Doubles and our Womens Drawn Doubles, and we look forward to good support at these three events.

President Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday April 22, 2021. Apologies were received. The RSA song was sung, along with Happy Birthday to those another year older. Sympathy was extended to anyone who had sadly lost a loved one. Sick members were also wished better health. Thank you, to those ladies who helped on Poppy Day. The programmes for this year were distributed. Competition next month: 1 Autumn bloom, cup saucer and plate. Manny Sim was our guest, members sang along to very popular songs, his selections were really enjoyed, thank you to Manny for entertaining us. Raffles were won by Marilyn Coley and Elsie Worsfold. No competitions this month. Catherine, Colleen and Kelly Rose shared hostess duties to end the afternoon.
Ashburton Woodworkers
A pleasing turnout of 20 members for this month’s meeting. Informed of the Funday in Timaru next month where the Canterbury clubs are invited to a challenge to turn three bats and three balls within a certain time and they need to look identical. No measuring devices to be used, a good eye and possibly fingers as a guide. The reward The Totally Turner Trophy, a desired trophy to come home with. The six turners need to practice and practice. One of the issues wood turners have is dragging shavings inside, which while messy is dry and easily collected unlike
clay. It’s amazing where these shavings send up, in sorts of unusual places. I recall a school bus driver with a load of small children who politely enquired of the driver what he had in his ears. Ah wood shavings, much to the merriment of the children. Maybe it showed what was between his ears. Show and Tell: Chris Thompson had a box of plough planes belonging to his grandfather he was saddened that some blades were missing, of which he could have been the culprit. Kevin Challis: a matai plate, kauri candle stick, totara burr bowl. John Millichamp: a large yew bowls from a hospital tree. Paul Sheldon; lidded box, matai fruit bowl. Geoff Brown: oak platters from the Walnut Road tree. Merv Peck: segmented bowl from totara, rewarewa wood. He’s getting good at these. Wim Melchers: a piece of yew off cut, out of the firewood box, into a shape of a type of jug. Chris Thompson demonstrated the finer points of sharpening flat wood chisels, plane blades on an oil stone using CRC instead on oil, in a circular motion. A useful exercise from a craftsman. Kevin Challis showed the procedure for using the jigs to correctly sharpen gouges so that we always end up with the same bevel angles instead of different angles. This correct procedure lengthens the use of the expensive chisels. Discussions on health and safety issues which remains an important topic, especially in a workshop like ours. Issues like dust, noise, various blades on machinery, sharp chisels, cluttered floor and how they can be eliminate. It was stressed these safe practices should also be carried out in your own workshop. Safety glasses, footwear, dust masks, sharp tools. A worthy safety reminder.

President Carl welcomed 73 members to the meeting before inducting Ken Borland as the new president for years 2021-22. Then President Ken presented Carl with his Past Presidents badge. The club stood in silence in respect for the late Duke of Edinburgh. President Ken welcomed four visitors to the meeting – John Duncan, Don Reith and Kerry & Murray Jackson. Apologies were received from 7 members. Our mini speaker was Richard Giller who started by saying “What you see is what you get”. Richard was born in Christchurch and first met his father (at the age of 3) when he returned from the war. He completed his education as an unqualified accountant. which was to be an asset to him later. His early his working life included farm work, a stock firm, and as a blade shearer. After marrying Joyce he sought a job closer to home to work for a group of 14 small farmers before moving to the Ashburton district. His Great Great Grandfather was an auctioneer and he had a few years as one also, with Stephenson Auction Mart. before it closed. He was then introduced to Maurice Wall at AIS and found a position there for the next 30 years until he retired, and that was where his accounting abilities become a real asset. During his working life he has enjoyed good health but during his retirement things have not been so kind. Our main speaker was Roger Sutton, the CEO of EA Network, and described it as a transport business which owns all the network around Mid Canterbury. The power company’s pay to use the lines then buys energy from the generating company’s and charges the end users. EA Network has grown by 3 times in the last 20 years. Roger has photos of many of his customers on his office wall to remind him who he works for, and even one of the Queen who he greatly admires. He spoke about the changes in energy, solar power, wind generation and coal. About 15% of all New Zealand’s energy comes from burning coal. He also spoke about converting large boilers to electricity and mentioned that the largest boiler in Ashburton was 19 megawatts and that’s enough to heat every home here on the coldest night. Wind generation is relatively cheap because we have plenty wind. Many customers could save $700-$800 a year by looking for the cheapest power supplier but they are slow to switch. A win is a win for the green machine By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
It wasn’t pretty, but there’s five points in the bank and Celtic can move on. Maximum competition points from the third round of the season was the modus operandi for the green machine in their clash with Rolleston on Saturday afternoon, and while pleased to get what was wanted from the match, one word best summed up the feelings of coaches Matt Winter and Danny Hurley postmatch. “Frustrated,” Winter exclaimed. The two coaches had just watched their side blunder their way through what on paper should have been a comfortable match and their clear frustration at different points during the match showed. It wasn’t that Celtic were bad. With ball in hand, they looked very good. And they did win 27-8, but their biggest misgiving was a desire to try and score from every possession, which saw their game for the majority of the match lack any real structure and purpose. “That’s not how we want to play. “We were just trying too hard to scores tries and run over the

PHOTO MATT MARKHAM 240421-MM-001 top of them instead of building phases and momentum.” An early Rolleston penalty put Celtic on the back foot, but they rallied well and looked strong on attack in the first half, with tries to Elyh McKibbin and Paovale Sofai, with Nathan McCloy add-
ing five points from his boot. Up 15-3 at the break, the large crowd of local supporters were probably expecting Celtic to run away with the game in the second half, but Rolleston – to their credit – stood tall and threw plenty at their hosts, who large-
ly squared up to every challenge the visitors could muster. With a high penalty count from both sides, things became a little stop-start, but when they did build play, Celtic showed what they are capable of. It was Rolleston who scored first in the second half to tighten the match up, and a few nervous glances were exchanged around the Keenans Road venue. But McCloy, who played an absolute blinder in the No.10 jersey and was involved in everything, pounced on an opportunity to score from a deft little kick of his own through the defensive line, winning the race to the ball by a whisker, and then converted to give his side some breathing space. An ugly incident followed shortly after when Jack Harrex was shown a red card for a headbutt in the middle of a bit of a melee, but it spurred Celtic on further and Logan Flett – who like McCloy was outstanding, burrowed his way over a few minutes later to seal the game for Celtic. With two wins from two matches on the board for Celtic they’re in a good position and will now turn their attention to a clash with Southern at home this weekend. And you can imagine both Winter and Hurley will be keen to see plenty of improvement.

Losses for Hampstead, Rakaia Both Rakaia and Hampstead will be looking for sharp turnarounds in their season in the next few weeks after heavy defeats on Saturday. Rakaia suffered back-to-back defeats when humbled by a powerful Darfield side, losing 53-14. That leaves the riverside team with a win and two losses from their three matches, but they’ll look forward to a good opportunity to get back on the right side of the ledger this weekend when they take on the winless West Melton at home on Saturday afternoon. Hampstead were unable to repeat their heroics of a 47-0 win in their previous match when they took on competition heavyweights, Springston on the weekend. They were beaten 34-8, but a number of casual observers were more than impressed by their effort against a very good team. Hampstead get the bye this week but will need to almost go through the remainder of the season unbeaten if they are to push for a top three spot in their pool. Southern claim epic local derby By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
One game of rugby, so many talking points. Southern extended their Combined Country Rugby record to an impressive three-from-three with a defiant and determined victory against old foe Methven 23-18 under the lights at Hinds on Friday night – underlining themselves as one of the teams to beat this season, if we weren’t already aware. Local derbies always promise to be brilliant matches to watch, and this one didn’t fail. Sure, it was a little rough around the edges at times, but it never once lacked for passion or determination from two good rugby sides who didn’t want to give the other an inch from the first whistle to the last. Southern were sublime. Facing a barrage of Methven attacks in the first half, they withstood the challenge and did so with real force – managing to stop Methven from crossing the try line on every occasion bar one, when Brenton Connell ran a good inside line to score untouched. George Williams kept Southern
in the hunt at the other end of the paddock, and despite being largely starved of possession for most of the first 40 minutes, the hosts only trailed by one at 6-7 heading into the break. The second half saw Southern warm to their task. Fresh off scoring four tries last week, barnstorming centre Petero Tuwai, who Methven had managed to contain well for 50 minutes, somehow barged his way over the defensive line to score, and with the conversion over Southern were in front 13-7. A Reuben Early penalty from a tighthead scrum drew Methven back into the match 10 minutes later, but a second try to Tuwai – his eighth in three matches – again changed the complexity of the match. Methven drew back to within a converted try from another Early penalty, but with time running up on the clock Matt McAtamney took a snap drop goal attempt from 40 metres out, and it sailed over the posts to extend Southern’s lead to 10 with just minutes remaining. Methven scrambled late and Tyler Blackburn found his way through the defence to score – but time was up, and it was too
Southern emerged victorious from a clash with Methven under the lights of the Hinds Domain on Friday night. PHOTO MATT MARKHAM 230421-MM-004 little too late with Southern winning 23-18. Southern talked during the week about the need for their forward pack to set the tone, and that’s exactly what they did. The experienced shoulders of Eric Duff and Scott Vessey were instrumental, while Will MacKenzie controlled the game really
well from the base of the ruck. They are now in a really good space, and should easily push on to make the quarter-finals with three wins under their belt – they’ll be buoyed too by the return of a number of players in coming weeks, with five key players missing from their side on Friday. Methven, on the other hand,
will have a bit of soul-searching to do this week after the loss. At times they looked brilliant, but in vast areas of the contest they weren’t clinical enough. There were too many times when they were guilty of not looking after the ball around the ruck, be it on the ground or going into the hands of a kicker, with countless possessions countered by a Southern player diving on a loose ball or a successful chargedown attempt. A lot of that can be credit to the determination of the Southern side, though. They were simply the better team on the night. Methven’s cause wasn’t helped with the early loss of influential flanker Luke Gilbert, with what looked like a serious ankle injury. But then again, his replacement, young Michael Hennings, was the best player in a black and white jersey for the majority of the time he was on the paddock. Methven will head into a bye week now with their chances of a quarter-final spot looking likely to require an unbeaten run through the remainder of the normal season, while Southern will head into town this weekend to take on Celtic in what promises to be another great Mid Canterbury derby.

Right on target
Charlotte McKenzie is deep in concentration before the start of her round during the Target Shooting Mid Canterbury Championships on the weekend. Fellow local Jack Jones is in the background getting his eye in. By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Many of the South Island’s best target shooters made Ashburton home over the long weekend to take part in a double-header of competitions of epic proportions. Both Target Shooting Mid Canterbury and the Phoenix Target Shooting Club held competitions from Friday night through to Sunday evening, and locals and visitors alike were hailing the events as a huge success with some competitive shooting taking place. Spokesperson Nina McKenzie said getting such a good number of entries this early in the season was a great result. “We were delighted with the fields at this

early stage, and the fact we were represented from Nelson through to Invercargill. “As it was the first indoor event of 2021, there was almost palpable pleasure among the shooters and visitors to be seeing each other again, and it was remarked by a number of people how wonderful the atmosphere was.” Camaraderie aside, when competitors stepped into shooting mode there was no love lost on the range, with some good scores posted and really tight competition across the weekend. In the Target Shooting Mid Canterbury event, which was held over Friday night and into Saturday, there were a number of good performances from local shooters. Charlotte McKenzie went within a whisker of winning the A Grade action before just going down to New Zealand Wom-
en’s Randle team member Jolie Thompson from Fairlie. Only three shooters managed a possible 100/100 during the day, with local Hailey Beevor on that list. C Grade action went the way of Michaela Smith, while in the D Grade, locals Phoebe McKenzie, Tane Moore and Sam Sooialo made it a clean sweep with top three finishes. After the Graded competitions the top 10 shooters in both the open and B, C and D grades broke off into their own competitions with Charlotte McKenzie again in great form picking up a second placing while Michaela Smith and Kevin Hooper made it a local first and second finish in the BCD Grade. On Sunday it was the turn of the Phoenix Championships, and again local shooters
were to the fore. Sandy Bennett and Steve McArthur placed in the Masters Grade, while Nina McKenzie was second in the A Grade action just ahead of Hailey Beevor. Madi Tourle finished second in C grade ahead of Smith, who capped off a good weekend with a third placing while Phoebe McKenzie and Tane Moore went back-toback in D grade finishing first and second. Bennett took the honours of Open Champion in the top shoot to round off a huge weekend. McKenzie said it wasn’t just the shooters who made the weekend though. “We had a dedicated team who worked really hard to ensure a quality championship was run. Shania Harrison-Lee and Keith Bonnington, who are both injured, were on deck all weekend with big smiles helping out too.”
