Migrants driver licensing scheme secures funding The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is funding an initiative to help migrants living in rural Mid Canterbury get a driver’s licence, leading to greater independence. Under the programme, up to 24 mainly migrant women who live on rural properties or in small towns will be enrolled in a road code course to gain a learner’s licence. MPI is providing $20,000 for the programme to be delivered by the Mid Canterbury Rural Driver Licensing Scheme. The scheme has helped more than 70 people through its road code course since 2018. The scheme is a partnership between Safer Mid Canterbury and the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust, and MPI’s funding will enable the scheme to continue providing its skill-building programme in the 2021-22 financial year. “We were facing the prospect of having to reduce the number of people we help gain licences each year due to reduced funding as a result of Covid-19,” programme co-ordinator of the Mid Canterbury Rural Driver Licensing Scheme Wendy Hewitt said. “MPI’s support will ensure we can keep operating. “Not having a driver’s licence in a rural or regional area can make it impossible for a person to find

work and earn an income.” Hewitt said once people have passed their learner’s test they are paired with a volunteer driving mentor to begin working towards their restricted licence. The scheme has already helped 32 people to obtain a restricted or full licence, of whom 25 have since gained employment. Hewitt said it’s also had other benefits such as people forming new friendships, joining clubs, and boosting confidence and self-esteem. The scheme provides transport to class, childcare for participants’ children while they’re learning, and up to four professional driving lessons. MPI’s director of rural communities and farming support, Nick Story, said it can be incredibly difficult living in a rural area without a driver’s licence. “Calling an uber or a taxi isn’t an option. It can also be more isolating if you’re new to a district. “Being unable to travel limits people’s ability to socialise, make friends and integrate into the community.” Funding for the new initiative was provided in Budget 2020 in which MPI was allocated $1.1 million over three years to deliver extra wellbeing and support services to complement those provided by Rural Support Trusts.

Last day for voting on welcoming mural By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Voting closes today to decide which of the two creative and colourful mural concepts will adorn a currently vacant wall in the Ashburton CBD. Two concepts (seen on page 1) were put forward for a public vote to choose which concept is preferred for the rear wall of Armadillo’s restaurant located

in Ashburton’s CBD. The art concept that receives the most public support by the end of the vote-by-text campaign will be painted on the wall situated on the corner of Cass and Burnett streets. The Ashburton District Council opted to trial a text vote system due to its convenience and it has received a strong response with over 500 votes received as of Thursday. Voting on the mural options

closes today at 5pm. The two vibrant art concepts are designed by artists with local connections, based on ideas put forward by district residents earlier this year. Locally-born and raised Jonny Waters has put forward a fun typography-based design to spell out the name Hakatere. The ‘Hands’ design is based on bicultural understandings while also representing the diverse groups of Ashburton and

the changing landscape, both natural and man-made. International artist Koryu Aoshima was encouraged by his Ashburton host family connections to enter, producing his ‘pride’ concept. The rainbow flag represents diversity and unification while the film frame is designed for people to take part in the town’s history, future and landscape. District residents are being

In brief Roading upgrades Long awaited upgrades to some of the Ashburton District’s rural roads should bring some comfort to motorists, council says. Roading contractors have completed major restoration work to a handful of roads in the district, including areas near Hinds, Methven and Fairton. The upgrades are part of a one year $14 million makeover, which includes resurfacing and rehabilitation work on sealed and unsealed roads, roadside drainage improvements, footpaths, kerb and channel replacement, intersection resurfacing and streetlight upgrades. HEB Construction repaired nearly a kilometre of poor ground conditions on Isleworth Road, near Hinds, with more than half of the stretch of road needing to be dug out and replaced. Eastern Ward councillor Staurt Wilson said the work had been a long time coming and he was glad it had now been completed.

Councillors ‘kept out of the loop’ on river committee By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A disgruntled Ashburton District councillor believes elected members were kept out of the loop around “important” conversations concerning the Rangitata Awa. An update was provided to the council last week on the Rangitata Awa Restoration Project, where concerns were expressed on both the makeup and transparency of the associated working groups on the project. The formation of the group last year was largely spurred by major flooding of the Canterbury river in December 2019 and the need for further engagement from iwi on future flood protection. It was part of government-funded $2.7 million regional council work programme for work to mitigate flood risk, further investigations, and future and environmental enhancement works.

Hamish Riach The steering group comprises of representatives from Te Runanga o Arowhenua, the Department of Conservation (DOC), Environment Canterbury (ECan), Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), and the Timaru and Ashburton District Councils. Ashburton Ward councillor Angus McKay probed Ashburton District Council chief executive

Hamish Riach as to why there had been no earlier report around the council’s involvement. “I was bitterly disappointed that we, as elected officials, were not informed on such an important matter,” McKay said. “To infer that elected members are not interested about the lifeblood of the water in this district, leaves me absolutely cold.” Riach, the sole Ashburton representative on the steering group, highlighted that Ashburton representation came well after the formation of the group. “It had already been established. “There are all sorts of working groups, collaborations and joint work that does not necessarily always have the visibility of elected members.” An offer to provide meeting minutes to the council was proposed by Riach so members could remain informed on progress. Options to review the council’s input in both the Rangitata steer-

ing and working groups were tabled at the meeting, including an option to appoint an elected member. Members opted to retain the status quo. Riach added that any budgetary decisions involving possible contribution by the Ashburton District Council would also need to be formalised in chambers. Eastern Ward councillor Lynette Lovett believed the farming community was a notably absent presence among the restoration programme makeup. “I think there should be a farming interest in this,” she said. “Whatever this group is going to do it will affect all of the landowners down it (the Rangitata River). “At the moment they do not have a voice on this committee ... it’s vital that there is a voice for that fraternity in here.” A council-led request for a relevant landowner representative on the groups was a possible course of action, Riach said.

The number of people out of work in the Ashburton District has more than doubled in the past five years. In March 2017 there were 337 people around the district registered as job seekers, but in March this year, that number had risen to 702, and all time high for the quarter. Numbers have been steadily rising over those years, but March is the first time in recent years the number has topped 700. Sole parent benefit numbers have risen slowly over the same period, from 292 in 2017 to 309 in March this year. On the back of the marked increase in unemployment, overall beneficiary numbers have grown from 1050 in 2017 to 1497 in March this year. Of those beneficiaries 867 were female and 627 male.

Duck shooting Hundreds around the district will be counting down the hours until the start of the 2021 duck hunting season on Saturday. The opening day last year was delayed three months due to Covid-19, but things are back to normal this year with hunters heading to their maimais on the traditional first Saturday in May. Police are reminding people to be vigilant about safety and refresh themselves on the seven rules of firearm safety, to make sure your firearms are never left unattended in your vehicle. Federated Farmers wants duck hunters heading out for the season opening this weekend to enjoy themselves and to remember to thank the many farmers who provide access to their shooting spots.

Covid carnage hits home Ashburton’s Indian community homeland fears Members of Ashburton’s Indian community are contacting each other daily to check on their families in their Covid-ravaged homeland. Kunal Saluja, a member of the Ashburton Indian Multi-Cultural Trust, says it’s their way of keeping in touch and seeing if families in need require financial assistance. He says two dairy owners in Timaru and Christchurch have lost fathers to the pandemic. India’s death toll is now being reportedly pushing towards 200,000, and hospitals that do not have enough oxygen supplies and beds are turning away coronavirus patients. Kunal and his wife, Divya, also ring their parents in the northern Indian state of Haryana daily to ensure they are safe and well. “My family has been vaccinated and are free of Covid-19. However there’ve been deaths in the neighbourhood of people I’ve known and two of my extended family have died,” Kunal said. He said the situation in India was very serious and getting worse due to the shortage of medical supplies. Cases of Covid-19 are increasing at the rate of 350,000 daily. “We hoped India might recover from the second wave by itself but, due to religious festivals such as Holi and Ramadaan, people have come together in their millions and passed the virus on,” he said. “There are also elections in several Indian states bringing people out who’ve not followed the rules and stayed apart.” Kunal strongly believes there should be lockdowns on a regional basis as night curfews aren’t working well enough. “We need lockdowns to break the cycle,” he said. “People are panicking and hoarding the supply of oxygen cylinders and Covid-19 injections.” He said it was creating a shortage of supply in the market for needy people and those on the poverty line were even more at risk. Kunal also urged international communities such as Commonwealth countries to step in and speed up medical supplies. He says the Indian communi-

What you need to know about the vaccine rollout Here’s some useful information about our COVID-19 vaccination programme: Why aren’t we vaccinating everyone right now? The COVID-19 vaccine rollout is the largest vaccine programme our country’s ever managed.

Sometimes, if we have left-over vaccines in any given area, we may offer them to people in other groups. Like all medicine, each vaccine batch has an expiry date, so it makes sense to use it rather than waste it. This won’t lead to anyone missing their turn.

Everyone aged 16 and over in Aotearoa falls into one of four groups. Our plan started with those most at risk of catching COVID-19, or most at risk if they do get it. We’re on track to deliver 1 million doses of the vaccination by the end of June. This plan will see us steadily, then significantly, ramp up the rate of vaccination, with the goal of completing all vaccinations by the end of the year.

Our DHBs also have flexibility in how they respond to the needs of their local communities.

The vaccine is being made available to everyone aged 16 and over in Aotearoa. It’s free and no one will miss out.

Thank you Aotearoa

Is our rollout plan flexible? Flexibility has been built into our vaccine programme. We want to get everyone vaccinated as quickly and efficiently as possible, without any delays. This means overlapping the rollout between our groups – so before we have completely finished vaccinating the previous group, we will start on the next one.

The stronger our immunity, the greater our possibilities. Find out more at Covid19.govt.nz

Where communities are spread out over a large area, it may make sense to vaccinate a whole whānau or community at the same time – ensuring we make the most of our vaccine delivery.

Our vaccine rollout is a massive undertaking, with thousands of New Zealanders involved – from vaccinators to medical specialists, logistics experts, courier drivers, receptionists, volunteers and many more people. It also relies on the support of all of you. Thank you for your patience, and for working with us to help protect Aotearoa.

Set to debut at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show later this month, the Cyberster – developed by the team at the MG Advanced Design Centre in London – is a two-door, two-seater sports car recalling the brand’s tradition, drawing a number of styling cues from

the classic MGB Roadster. It features classic round MG headlights, coupled with a slim grille design, along with interactive Magic Eye headlights that open when switched on. Other striking details of the MG Cyberster are the laser belt LED strip down the side of the car and the outline of the door, which follows the direction of the LED strip.

Its powerful sports car profile has a distinct two-stage shoulder line, with a flattenedkamm tail rear. The tail lamps are of LED construction and are integrated flat into the rear of the car, projecting a digital image that echoes MG’s British heritage. Carl Gotham, Director of SAIC Design Advanced London, said: “The Cyberster is a bold statement that looks strongly into

MG’s future, touching on our heritage but more importantly building on our cutting edge technology and advanced design. “Sports cars are the lifeblood of the MG DNA and Cyberster is a hugely exciting concept for us.” The Cyberster’s intelligent all-electric architecture will enable an EV range of 800km and deliver a 0-100km/h time of less than three seconds.

Devon damaged in early morning break-in By Jonathan Leask

East Street intersection upgrades to commence

jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Two computer screens have been thrown from the second storey of the Devon Hotel following a break-in on Thursday morning. Police were called to the Devon Tavern on Victoria Street at around 7.10am after the cleaner disturbed someone in the building, a police spokeswoman said. “The person had left the scene when police arrived.” It is understood that the offender broke into the hotel through a first level window and proceeded upstairs where they have then thrown two computer screens out through two windows before fleeing the scene. A police dog unit was one of the units that responded to the scene and assisted with a search of the premises but nobody was located, the spokeswoman said. Police confirmed the building had been broken into and that enquiries were continuing to identify and locate the person responsible. While initially reported as a burglary, the Guardian understands nothing was taken from the premises. The two computer monitors that were thrown from the window and smashed on the pavement were no longer being used. The Devon Tavern is the only property operated by the Ashburton Trust after it shifted its business model to being predominantly a landlord. While unable to comment

Above and below – Computer monitors lie in pieces on the pavement after being thrown from the second storey of the Devon Tavern during a break-in on Thursday morning. PHOTO JONATHAN LEASK on the ongoing police investigation, Trust chair Rob Reid said that the damage from the incident, although considered minimal, was disappointing. “It’s a community cost because it’s a community owned building,” Reid said. “So any damage to it there is a cost to it which we have to cover which is a shame.” There is always a cost, he said, and in this case it’s money towards repairs that otherwise would have been distributed in the community through the trust’s grant schemes.

Property sales show no signs of slowing By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Sales numbers might be going through the roof, and real estate agents say they’re feeling the pain of those people who continue to miss out on buying a home. REINZ figures for March show 72 houses sold around the Ashburton District in March, up 20 on March 2020 but those numbers don’t tell the whole story, Property Brokers agent Murray Young says. The district’s median selling price dipped last month to $382,000 from $409,000 but that was largely due to the high number of section sales during the month – about 23 – Young said. A surge in section sales would spell a frantic time ahead for the construction industry, he said, but the high section sale numbers were having little impact on de-

mand for houses. “Everyone is in the same boat and that means people with properties they’re thinking about selling are thinking twice unless they have somewhere to go. It’s a bit of a catch-22.” The list of potential buyers was not getting any shorter, and even with some investors stepping back, the sting was not coming out of the market, Young said. Sales agents weren’t immune to buyer pain, he said, as most had clients were who missing out several times on a purchase. “We definitely feel for them and there’s nothing worse than having to ring someone when they’ve kept missing out.” It was a tough line to walk between getting the best deal for a vendor and ensuring all potential buyers had a fair chance to view a property, Young said. Looking ahead if interest rates remained

low and if the predicted influx of Kiwi returnees occurred, then it was unlikely the housing shortage would ease, he said. “We’re simply not building enough homes, particularly rentals over the next few years. It’ll sort itself out but we do feel the pain for buyers.” In March, the Canterbury median price rose 17.9 per cent compared to March 2020 and 2.7 per cent on February, The Canterbury median now sits at $575,000. Ashburton was one of only two districts in Canterbury to see its median price fall in March over March 2020, dropping 6.8 per cent. At the same time, Kaikoura led the way with a price rise of 16.9 per cent. Selwyn is now the most expensive place in Canterbury to buy, at a median of $650,000, followed by Christchurch city, $600,000 and Kaikoura, $575,000. Waimate is the cheapest at $315,000 ahead of Ashburton.

The timings of roadworks along East Street’s intersections has been confirmed following the Ashburton District Council approving an additional budget for the project last week. Further funding of nearly $200,000 was approved to keep at least one lane open at the East Street intersections in the CBD to maintain access for businesses and their customers during the upgrade construction works during May. Contractor Tru-Line Civil will carry out upgrade work at Tancred and Burnett Street intersections from May 3-7, on the northbound lane of East Street, limiting drivers to the southbound lane during this time. From May 17-31, the work will shift to the southbound lane with traffic only able to travel northbound on East Street. Also on East Street, work continues on schedule for the western side which includes deck construction, new gardens, lawns and a new ramp to the railway pedestrian crossing by the toilets. Pedestrian access in the CBD continues to be fluid while remaining available to all businesses at all times, with the crossing near the toilets due to reopen in mid-May. Meanwhile, the south side lane of Burnett Street has now been paved and sealed, with the north side lane and section of footpath from Armadillos up to the Arcade entranceway due to be completed before May 7. Tru-Line Civil are liaising with any businesses who may be affected while footpath work is happening directly outside their premises. Havelock and Moore Street intersection upgrades on East Street are planned to be undertaken in June and July.

Cold? Are you kidding? By Daryl Holden daryl.h@theguardian.co.nz

O

h, no. It’s cold. You poor things. Yes, we had a frost in Ashburton on Wednesday morning and it was slightly nippy yesterday, but I loved it. A frost means you’ll get a nice, sunny day. And when you’re from Invercargill, that’s something to be thankful for. Seriously, I’ve been here seven weeks and the weather has been superb. But perhaps my superb is different than yours, which is probably quite true. After all, it can be so cold in Southland that my beloved miniature schnauzer used to climb into the fridge just to warm up. And, of course, being cold is not just the only weather challenge those in the deep south face because we all know what you call two straight days of rain in Southland. A weekend. It’s also true that it gets so cold in Southland that hitchhikers have to hold up pictures of thumbs. OK, so I’m exaggerating just a tad and having a bit of fun. But you get my drift. One person’s normal is different than others. It reminds me of the comment great Australian cricketer

Cold yarns Cold stories: We want to hear any of your memories, funny or otherwise, of being cold. Maybe let us know the coldest place you have been to – in New Zealand or even overseas – and how you coped. Email your cold yarns to: editorial@theguardian.co.nz and war veteran Keith Miller made in an interview when he was asked how he coped with the pressure on the field. “Real pressure,’’ Miller said, “is when you are flying a Mosquito with a Messerschmitt up your arse’’. I guess it’s similar with the weather, which in this part of the world is definitely nothing to complain about. I’m not basing that on just the past two months because I also lived just down the road in Timaru for seven years where I could count on two hands how many times I had to report on winter sport on the sidelines in rain or in excessively cold conditions.

But maybe we breed them tougher down south. I think there could be something to that. Many years ago, I remember reporting on a club rugby league game at an exposed ground towards the beach in Invercargill. The rain turned to hail, which turned to sleet. Throw in the wind chill factor and the temperature was probably a bone chilling minus 2 or 3 degrees. Halfway through the game, the referee – a young fellow from Christchurch brought south for his development – called both captains over and asked if they thought the fixture should be called off because of the weather. The captains looked at each other. They looked at the referee. They laughed. “Shit no, bro,’’ one said. We love this.’’ And off they went, sprinting back into the action, giggling like the late and affable comedian, Billy T James. The poor whistle-blower trudged in behind them and the game continued, much to the delight of a big crowd, who were five and six deep around a rope-fenced paddock of a field with no fancy grandstand to shelter in. So the next time you complain about the cold, think of me or any other Southlanders, who really know what cold is. And what’s cold again? That’s when you see granddad’s teeth chattering . . . in the glass.

Poor pooch: Frank Holden, the ageing miniature schnauzer, had to don his favourite blanket to keep warm in Invercargill.

YOUR VIEW Anzac performance I would like to express my sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone that was involved in Saturday’s Anzac Stories & Songs From the Front Line concert at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. I was overwhelmed by the performances of everyone involved. The amount of time that must have been put into researching and collating the personal information from families would have been immense. For myself it was a very unexpected but wonderful tribute to the memories of my brothers and all servicemen. To everyone involved congratulations and thank you for a wonderful afternoon. Hoops’ happy health hints

L

ast week I took you on a wee journey to happiness with some tips I’d acquired, everything from ending your shower with a blast of cold water to taking a lunchtime stroll. This week is the next step and I’d suggest it’s even more important. It’s all about sleep this week. Do you ever wake up feeling really groggy, even when you’ve had a good night’s sleep? Or wake up an hour before your alarm is due to go off and feel wide awake and ready to tackle the day? According to a British surgeon, it’s all down to your sleep cycle and timing around it. Dr Karan Raj who has more than 3 million followers on Tik Tok (here I was thinking it was all about doing silly dances) has

By Phill Hooper

OFF THE AIR

shared how mastering your sleep cycle could help you to wake up feeling refreshed. In his video, which has been viewed 1.6 million times, he says your brain moves through several sleep cycles each night. “Each cycle starts with light sleep, then deep sleep, then dreaming and then back to light.” He says each of these cycles lasts around 90 minutes and he suggests you time your alarm to go off at the end of a cycle. To work out what time your

bedtime should be you have to work backwards in 90-minute blocks from what time you want to get up. So, for me it would be 4am – 2.30am – 1am – 11.30pm – 10pm – 8.30pm. The 8.30pm option is the one I’ll be testing out as I know the six hours sleep that the 10pm option gives me won’t be enough, although if I’m catching the cycle right maybe I’ll wake refreshed even after six hours sleep. I wonder if Nana naps fit into Dr Raj’s equation at all. The other sleep tip I keep hearing over and over again is to avoid screen time at least an hour before heading off to the scratcher. But if it can’t be avoided make sure you have the blue light from your screen turned off.

I’m sorry to say for late night screen watchers, I have bad news on the blue light front. In an attempt to look after users’ eyes and aid them in a better night’s sleep, the tech giants created Night Shift. Night Shift is supposed to help users get a better night’s sleep, but a new study finds that is not the case. Researchers from Brigham Young University say sleep quality among smartphone users is no different with or without Night Shift on. Researchers compared sleep outcomes among three groups. The first two either used their phones at night with or without Night Shift activated. The third group did not use a smartphone before bed at all. “In the whole sample, there were no differences across the

three groups,” says BYU’s Chad Jensen in a university release. “Night Shift is not superior to using your phone without Night Shift or even using no phone at all.” Probably safest to take a good old fashioned book to bed or better still collect a few of my columns and flip through those, which should knock you, spark out. Rugby’s overdue revolution is at hand By Hamish Bidwell

W

hat’s important here is that the game has said ‘enough’. In unanimously voting in favour of New Zealand Rugby’s (NZR) attempt to sell a 12.5 per cent stake in its commercial interests to Silver Lake, New Zealand’s 26 provincial unions have begun the work required to wrest control of rugby away from the players and their union. I’m no huge fan of Silver Lake or private investment, necessarily. But I am entirely fed up – as NZR and the provincial unions appear, too – with the New Zealand Rugby Players’ (NZRPA) reluctance to show any regard for the game they’re bankrupting. Rugby – as in the game that exists beyond All Blacks and Super Rugby level – is dying. Neglect’s the main cause, as virtually every available dollar is spent on satisfying the whims and fancies of our elite players. Silver Lake won’t solve NZR’s

problems. It won’t fund the various programmes the game needs to survive, or even meet the endless wage demands of the NZRPA’s members, but it will at least buy the governing body time. Assuming – of course – that NZR and the players’ association can come to an accommodation. The two parties are said to have sat through seven sessions of mediation in recent weeks with no ground having been yielded. NZR, who announced a $34 million loss for the 2020 financial year, need the players to agree to the Silver Lake deal and so far their response has basically been ‘get stuffed’. There are various reasons why rugby has meant so much to so many New Zealanders over the years. We all love a winner and – more often than not – the All Blacks do pretty well, so that certainly helps. But one of the game’s huge advantages here has always been its relatability. Chances are you’ve met an All

Black. Or your dad went to school with one, or a couple live in your suburb, or several began their rugby journey at the club your family’s connected to. Whatever the case, the degrees of separation between ourselves and the provincial and Super and All Blacks stars we see on TV have been minimal. For generations these doers of exceptional deeds have been largely like the rest of us, walking the same streets and driving similar cars and rarely putting themselves on a pedestal. Tantrums and Tiaras was a documentary made about rockstar Elton John. I’ve not seen it myself, but the title comes to mind every time I hear an All Black – or Rob Nichol from the NZRPA – talk about how hard they’ve got it. The way they implacably oppose every revenue-generating attempt by NZR always makes me think of precious pups in ivory towers, wailing about the injustice of it all. Now maybe all of our All Blacks

don’t behave in that fashion but – let’s be honest – it’s hard not to suspect that one or two do. More often than not, it’s worked. NZR and the Super franchises and provinces have routinely acquiesced to most requests, ensuring this country’s elite players are rarely – if ever – required to do anything that they don’t want to do. But not today. No, today rugby united. Rugby showed its emphatic support for the Silver Lake deal, leaving the NZRPA as the only impediment. Few people enjoy being disliked. Teams and athletes are forever telling themselves that the world’s against them and no one respects them, but none of that’s real. For all that our best rugby players talk about never reading the paper or listening to the radio or watching the TV or responding to folk on social media, they remain incredibly sensitive to slights. As their cars and houses get bigger and their holidays more lavish, it’s ironic that it’s through

criticism that the players remain connected to us. Try as they might to place themselves above us, our opinion continually brings them back to earth. And that’s how you imagine this thing will get resolved. As rugby rallies around and creates a united front, it’s not the players’ greatness that sets them apart anymore, but their pettiness. If enough people – from rank and file fans, right through to all of rugby’s administrators – take a dim enough view of the players, then they’ll eventually want to save face. The thought of everyone actually being against them for once will simply be too much. But NZR have to hold their nerve here. Yesterday’s vote was an encouraging start, but the battle to put the players in their proper place hasn’t been won. With all due respect to Super Rugby Aotearoa, what happens next promises to be more entertaining than anything we’ve seen on the park. - Radio New Zealand

Fromlawnmowers to street sprints G

reg Cross’ racing career started out with the family’s ride-on lawnmower, but now he races in the Ashburton big leagues. Growing up in Ashburton, Wheels Week has been a big part of Greg’s childhood. It was a mixture of going to the Wheels Week events such as the street sprints and watching his dad tinkering on his cars that sparked his love for cars and a determination to race. As soon as he was old enough to drive, his 80s Toyota Starlet was entered into the street sprints. This year will be Greg’s seventh year participating in the Ashburton Car Club’s street sprints, but there are two years that are his most memorable. His second year competing in the event, he had his dad in the car he came in too hot around a bend and made contact with a hay bale.

“I don’t think dad was too impressed when I hit the hay bales,” he said. And in 2017 he placed in the top 20 overall, and came 1st in the under 21 category. Hoping to do the same this year. “When I was young, going to the street sprints and watching it with dad, I never thought I would ever actually race in [it] myself. But now that I’m doing it, it’s a really achievable goal,” he said. Greg joined the Ashburton Car Club after heading along to the club’s other events like motorkhana. Events like street sprints and motorkhana require competitors to manoeuvre their car as fast as possible around a track one at a time.

Wheels Week an Ashburtontradition W

A matter of fact Here’s something you might not know from a past Wheels Week! 2007’s Wheels Week was a great year for raising funds for charity, a truck show event raised $4000 for the Child Cancer Foundation and an Ashburton motorcycle club event raised $2000 for the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade.

hen people move to Ashburton, one thing that they should get when they move in is a Wheels Week brochure in their mailbox Because Wheels Week is a staple for more than just petrol heads in Ashburton. It’s a decades long tradition. Myself living in Ashburton since I was young, and a dad who is heavily into motorsport, Wheels Week events were a big part of my childhood. Year after year my brother and I would head to Wheels Week events with my dad. The street sprints was a highlight of the week for many. The Robinson Street industrial area is transformed into a racetrack. Many residents of Ashburton will have memories of sitting on the grandstands, smelling burned rubber, hay, and hot chips. I know I do. At the end of the week (or fortnight in recent years) the East Street, street

parade is always a town favourite. It’s a morning where the town CBD is packed to the brim, people lined the streets from Couplands and past the clock tower. My family at least used to place ourselves in the same area to watch the parade year after year. That was until later years when my family and I would join dad in being in the parade as part of his car club. Wheels Week organisers and clubs that participate in Wheels Week have done well to keep the magic alive for three decades. Sadly due to Covid and roadworks we haven’t seen the town centre as packed to the brim for a few years. All going according to plan residents should resume their usual spots next year.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You can’t prepare for everything. In fact, if you prepare for nothing, you’ll still be OK today. You’ll dip into the scene, figure out exactly what you need and go from there. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The one who avoids the question is hiding something. It’s the reason that matters most though. Secrets can be kept out of graciousness, privacy or deceit. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You want the shiny, biggerthan-life, exciting enticement that’s being dangled before you. Maybe you wouldn’t want it under different circumstances. Take yourself out of the situation, see what sticks. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Where wants are wellprovided for, stagnation sets in. There’s no need to pursue the breakthrough, innovate or elevate the thought process. Being deep and wanting more means you are insatiable. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): In certain friendship circles the levels of disclosure are high, as are the competitive vibes. You’re conversationally generous. You’ve been waiting for your turn to talk, you should run with it when it comes. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’ll be intrigued by those who talk about the common things a little differently. You’re being introduced to a different worldview and may be inspired to explore edgier terrain. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You realise that you have, to some degree, overcome that which once would have activated your defences and ego. You now see the game in something you used to take quite seriously. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Calm people make better decisions. Decisions made in the heat of anger, passion or retail pressure are likely to be regrettable. Hold your tongue – also your receipts. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): As much as you want to share, the timing of your sharing is crucial to the development of the relationship. You want to stay in charge of it. Being overly emotional results in a loss of control. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You are like the others in a group in a few key ways that matter. You’re also different. Highlight the values you share for now. There will be plenty of time to challenge one another in the future. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Alexander the Great learned how to govern a state from Aristotle. As Alexander applied his firsthand experience to modify his learning, he surpassed his mentor in knowledge and power. You’ll do the same. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): It behoves you to create offers that are a win-win. You need support. It is only when others want to see your objectives met just as badly as you do that things start moving.

ispano Suiza presents Unique Tailormade, a customisation programme that will convert each Hispano Suiza created in a unique

work of art. The brand raises the concept of luxury to its maximum exponent, thus creating the concept of Hyperlux, which allows its discerning customers to create a totally custom-made car. In total, there are 1904 different customisation combinations, achieving unmatched differentiation. Hispano Suiza Carmen is much more than a vehicle. Its performance, materials and technology make it a dream come true both for the Suqué Mateu family, who brought the legendary Spanish brand

back to life, and for luxury car lovers. As if it were a work of art, each Carmen produced is unique, since the buyer can make countless customisations inside and outside. It is here where the concept of Hyperlux is raised to its maximum exponent. The Hispano Suiza Carmen is already a highly exclusive piece, due to the fact that its production is limited to 19 units, of which only five will be built in the Boulogne version. Carmen’s design inspiration is based on the Dubonnet Xenia from the 1930s, although the technology has nothing to do with that of the past, nor with that of any other car in the market today. Proof of this are the more than 1000 CV of power that it achieves thanks to its four

permanent magnet synchronous motors housed in the rear axle, its 1160 Nm of torque or the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2.6 s. Hispano Suiza also wants its customers to turn the vehicle of their dreams into reality, and for this reason the Hispano Suiza Design Studio has created the Unique Tailormade Program based on the Color&Trim defined by the brand. Each customer will have at their disposal an internally developed customisation program to configure their vehicle. Through this, they will be able to choose between three configuration lines that reflect the main values of the brand’s DNA - Elegance, Heritage and Sport and, based on these, each client will have the option of choosing different colors or

materials for the interior and exterior of the vehicle, which will allow them to add a personal touch to the design and adapt it to their tastes. The colours have been named after the historic landmarks and milestones of the brand, such as Peralada Green, Swiss Red, Xenia Gray, Birkigt White or Begur Blue, among others. Customisable exterior parts include the grille, rear-view mirrors, body colour, wheels, and air intakes; with regards to the interiors, the customer can choose different options and colours for the steering wheel, dashboard, seat upholstery or floor mats. In total, there are 1904 possible combinations, which practically prevents two identical Hispano Suiza Carmen from leaving the Barcelona factory.

Rolling into town again By Bernard Egan MOTORING WRITER

T

oday we are on the cusp of something really good and eagerly awaited. Something Covid deprived us of last year, hence the wait has been a long one. But Wheels Week 2021 will be something well worth the wait. Actually, it’s really Wheels Two Weeks, because from May 1 to 16, Wheels Week Ashburton’s unique and iconic celebration of all things wheelie will provide an array of events which have very wide-ranging appeal.

Tomorrow alone there is an opportunity to visit five functions – get a bargain at the Swap Meet, see Rod and Custom cars, call into the Plains Railway, watch speedway racing or visit the Originals Motorcycle Show and Shine. Then on Sunday the Motorcycle Club will be staging their TT event, the Mountain Bike Club have a relay, the Aviation Museum is open, as it will be on several other days, and the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains Classic Car Run will be staged. The list goes on – ever wanted to go to a drive–in movie? Well you can on Friday night May 14. Earlier that week there’s a night-time car trial, and what about seeing some drifting, or stopping by for coffee and classics? A ride on a model train might appeal, and no doubt the wheelchair basketball

will be entertaining. The Mid Canterbury 4X4 Club are having a play day, classic boats will be seen at Lake Hood, and go kart paddock racing will be interesting. And wait, there’s more – truly something for everyone. In the middle of it all is a very special and this year especially poignant event – the Shayne Adams Memorial Street Sprints will take place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 May. It’s impossible within a few words to do justice to the amazing programme, so best thing to do is pick a copy, or visit www. wheelsweek.co.nz Make sure you do so you don’t miss out. Thanks to a great team of organisers, supporting clubs and 27 proud sponsors, 2021 Wheels Week is about to roll into town. Roll on Wheels Week, and all the enjoyment and fun which goes with it.

Either way you look at it, this line-up is superbly impressive.

A

drive to Methven is always good. The visit Stuart Hart and I made on Saturday was even more interesting than usual. On the way up we enjoyed magnifi-

cent views of the mountains, but coming home we could hardly see beyond the bonnet, when we encountered a very dramatic thunderstorm, accompanied by torrential rain. In Methven we saw a magnificent

display of Bentleys, with a sprinkling of Rolls-Royces, lined up by their owners who had been enjoying a local tour. The oldest car was a very early model, the youngest was almost new, and in between there were a variety of superb models.

n his early days Walter Owen Bentley who would go on to build the cars which continue to bear his name, successfully competed in motorsport. One of the cars in which he had success was a DFP. We can be excused for not recognising this marque, which is an abbreviation of the Company name Doriot, Flandrin & Parant, a French car maker which operated between 1906 and 1926. After production finished, the factory was sold to light car maker Lafitte, but eventually it closed in 1928. DPF is another name 1908 DFP from the annals of motoring history which has all but vanished into the mists of time, but it still has that association with – and influenced – one of the greats – W. O. Bentley.

Walter Owen (W.O.) Bentley founded his company in 1919 with the goal of building “a fast car, a good car, the best in its class” – qualities which have remained and were very apparent in all the magnificent cars seen in Methven.

Exclusively unveiled at the Mugello circuit during Aprilia All Stars, the Aprilia-branded party that saw the participation of more than 10,000 motorcycle enthusiasts, Aprilia RSV4 X is developed by Aprilia Racing around the base of the RSV4 1100 Factory and produced in a limited run of just ten units. Once online booking opened on factoryworks.aprilia.com, it was only a few hours before this jewel of Italian racing production sold out, a bike dedicated exclusively to the track and offered at a price of 39,900 Euro.

The ten lucky buyers will collect their bikes directly from Aprilia Racing, the racing department in Noale opening its doors especially for the occasion. The department’s racing experience has been fully harnessed in order to lighten the Aprilia RSV4 X and achieve an exceptional dry weight of 165 kg. Aprilia Racing has selected a series of refined, lightweight components, such as the carbon fairing – enhanced with special dedicated graphics inspired by the livery of the 2019 MotoGP Aprilia RS-GP as well as a more lightweight tank. Another obvious sports-derived element is the racing panel via which to adjust the main electronic controls of the RSV4 X. There are numerous billet aluminium details, such as the clutch lever, the front brake lever guard, the engine sump guards, the adjustable foot pegs and the upper steering plate, important details that make for a further weight saving.

Marchesini forged magnesium wheels magnify the already spectacular handling of the RSV4 and mount Pirelli slick tyres. The inimitable 1100 cc V4 engine is prepared directly by Aprilia Racing, the most advanced Piaggio Group platform for the development of technology applied first to racing bikes and then to factory models. This special preparation involves hand assembly and the subsequent fine-tuning of all tolerances, just as is done for competition engines. The Akrapovic exhaust system features titanium collectors and a carbon outlet, while the air filter has been replaced with a Sprint Filter element, specifically the air filter that offers the highest permeability of those available on the market (as well as being waterproof), the same unit that Aprilia Racing uses in MotoGP. Electronic tuning is guaranteed by a specific ECU mapping, with

ston Martin is revealing more details of its forthcoming V12 Speedster – the open cockpit celebration of the British luxury sports car brand’s proud past and exciting

future. Just 88 examples of the Aston Martin V12 Speedster are available worldwide and this week the brand is unveiling details of a custom specification that is certain to underscore the cars’ instant collector’s item status. The new car aligns gracefully with a heritage that features not only the exceptional DBR1, but also the breathtaking CC100 which was unveiled in 2013 as a stunning celebration of Aston Martin’s century of sports car excellence. The DBR1 is the most successful racing machine constructed by Aston Martin, having triumphed in the 1959 staging of both the 24 hours of Le Mans and the 1000 km of Nürburgring.

Although a car made for competitive racing, the DBR1 was also a precursor for some of the marque’s most well-known heritage DB road cars. It was styled in-house by a highly talented designer, Frank Feeley, and remains one of the most beautiful and graceful of all time. At the new car’s heart lies a high-performance variant of Aston Martin’s now iconic 5.2-litre V12 Twin-Turbo engine, capable of generating an output of around 700 PS and 753 Nm, mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission mounted towards the rear of the car. This translates into a 0-62 mph time in the order of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph – no mean feat in a car devoid of roof or windscreen. Orders are now being taken for the DBR1 custom V12 Speedsters, each being hand built at the company’s Gaydon headquarters, with deliveries expected to begin in mid 2021.

dedicated track settings. These components ensure an increase in maximum power, from an already excellent 217 HP for the standard model, to the impressive 225 HP of the RSV4 X. The Aprilia V4 is equipped with the ANN system (Aprilia No Neutral), the gearbox with neutral positioned below first gear that speeds up shifting from first to second and prevents any up-shifting errors. It’s a solution that derives directly from Aprilia’s experience in SBK and MotoGP and that is made available on a model on public sale for the very first time. Another world first comes in the shape of the Brembo braking system, the firm having selected the Aprilia RSV4 X for the debut of its sophisticated and extremely efficient GP4-MS billet callipers that act on a pair of steel discs with T-Drive technology and are controlled by a 19x16 billet radial pump.

RUGBY

Chasing ducks to entering rucks By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Some will head for the waters to chase ducks, while the others head to the rugby paddock to engage in rucks. And then there’s those who will do both. Mid Canterbury Senior B competition takes on a smaller role this weekend with just the two matches for the round, with the Southern and Mt Somers clash having already been played to allow teams to take part in the opening weekend of duck shooting. But their absence doesn’t leave too much of a hole in the week’s play, with two really strong matchups on the programme for what should be a good day of rugby. Celtic will be out to hold onto the Bruce Beckley Challenge Shield when Allenton come to Keenans Road, in what should be the game of the round. Both sides had strong wins in the opening round of the competition, Celtic overcoming Mt Somers and Allenton putting in a strong performance to down Collegiate and Hampstead Combined. In front of their home crowd and with the Bruce Beckley on the line, there’s a real strong opportunity for the Celtic side to get some forward momentum into their season with a win to-

M8

morrow, especially with a clash against Methven looming next weekend as part of Methven’s 125th Celebration. Methven head into town today, looking to build on their strong first round victory over Southern two weeks ago. They will head to Collegiate to take on the combined side in the second match of the round. While beaten by Allenton, the combined side showed plenty of

try-scoring ability in defeat, and Methven will be fully aware of that danger and want to stamp it out of the game as quickly as possible. The Celtic and Allenton clash kicks off at Celtic at 1pm as the curtain raiser to a local derby in the Combined senior competition between Celtic and Southern, while Collegiate/Hampstead and Methven lock horns at 2.30pm just around the corner.

Injuries hurting Highlanders “It’s a big disappointment for him, so hopefully he can come back and have another good [NPC].” He said it was good to have Gilbert back, the young outside back having had his introduction to the side a year ago. Brown said the 22-year-old was a more natural fullback, although the side was just keen to get him on the field. While tonight’s game may be meaningless in terms of making the competition final, the Highlanders were focused on it and not the looming trans-Tasman competition. They have yet to claim back-to-back wins, although doing so will ensure they finish the Aotearoa competition with a win over each team. There had been games among those lost – notably the Chiefs at Forsyth Barr Stadium – that the side had let slip away, which left Brown with a feeling of disappointment. “We haven’t done that [won back-to-back games] yet. But for us, whatever happens against the Hurricanes it’s going to be one of those campaigns where we lost a couple of games that we shouldn’t have. “It’ll always be the disappointing thing at the end of this campaign . . . that we should be in the final.”

Marino Mikaele-Tu’u is the latest to fall in the Highlanders’ injury-plagued season. The dynamic loose forward will miss the remainder of Super Rugby, having sustained a stress fracture in his leg. He is one of two players missing due to injury for the side’s final Super Rugby Aotearoa match, against the Hurricanes in Wellington tonight. Ngane Punivai will also miss the game, having suffered bleeding in a quadriceps. The versatile back has been replaced by Sam Gilbert on the right wing, who returns after a nine-month injury layoff himself. Hugh Renton replaces Mikaele-Tu’u on the bench, while loosehead prop Ethan De Groot switches into the starting line-up for Ayden Johnstone in the only other change from the side which beat the Blues two weeks ago. Highlanders coach Tony Brown said it was disappointing to lose Mikaele-Tu’u, who is the side’s eighth player ruled out for the season. “It’s a bit consistent with the rest of our guys,” he said. “We seem to be losing two guys a week on average at the moment.

Impressive showing from local karateka

By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

With a number of major events just around the corner, including one on home mats, members of Ashburton Dojo are hitting form at just the right moment. A six-strong contingent of locals trekked to Christchurch over the long weekend to compete at the New Zealand Open Karate Championships which were held at Pioneer Stadium over both Friday and Saturday. And they came home with

plenty to smile about. It’s a busy time ahead for the group. This weekend they’re back on the mats for the Canterbury Westland Championships – again in Christchurch – and then later next month they’ll turn all their attention to the Shotokan Championships which will be held in Ashburton at their home base in Tinwald. Cancelled last year due to Covid-19, the group are looking forward to hosting it again this year with the tournament bringing competitors from Christchurch,

Timaru and Akaroa into town for the event. On the weekend just been, Ashburton Dojo members were right amongst all the action, including four victories across the course of the competition. Brooke Edmond, who was competing in the female eight and nine-year-old division, picked up first placings in both

the Kata and Kumite to wrap up a very strong weekend for her on the mats. Madison Edmond was also in good form, winning the female 10-11 years Kumite, while Cargill Henderson also showed strong form claiming glory in the men’s 35-44 year development Kumite. Henderson also grabbed a second placing in the Kata in the

same age division and was second in the Men’s 18+ years Kumite. Placings across the weekend also came from Carina Lupse in the female 10-11 years premier Kumite and Isabel Wang in the female 12-13 years premier Kumite. Joshua Cannan also performed with distinction in the men’s 1213 year premier divisions.
