Croys’ Christmas gift to grandparents

Croys used their end-of-year Christmas treat to support a local charity. Each staff member of the Ashburton accountant firm was surprised with $100 to spend that afternoon with the only provision that $20 had to be used on a gift for the Ashburton branch of the national Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust. Croys director Anne Marrett said with a number of staff being grandparents they saw it as a great opportunity for some Christmas charity. “These children in there grandparents’ care will all get presents, but we wanted to make sure these grandparents didn’t miss out,” Marrett said. Ashburton’s Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust co-ordinator Karen Kilgor was presented with the items. Grandparents needing to take over raising children are on the rise in New Zealand, with the Ashburton branch having an additional 10 new cases in 2020. PHOTO SUPPLIED

Time to look forward, not back By Matt Markham

I

the woods. So much success, so much hard work and some wonderful achievements from all corners of the county. And that’s what we should really focus on as we reflect on another year gone by. And not the what might have been moments had Covid-19 not struck. It’s a real pleasure for us here in the Guardian office to be able to bring some of these incredible feats to you, our loyal readers. Be it the 65-hour bowling challenge of Dan Hopkins recently, Eric Watson’s world record wheat yield or even the tale of young Angus Riley and his sunflower seed selling efforts which resulted in him becoming all but a household name locally. These are the stories that make us enjoy what we do so much. It’s been a big year here for us too. We took what we’ve been doing for decades and made a

t’s the year we’d most likely all like to never remember, yet 2020 will go down as the year we’ll never forget. And as the curtain falls on another 12-month period in our lives, it’s important that we largely look forward and not back. Yes, Covid-19 struck and for a while there it felt like the world was paralysed. And while the ramifications of a worldwide pandemic are still evident in our everyday lives, we have begun the moving forward process. And we’ve done quite a nice job of it too. New Zealand has led the way in many respects. Which means that Mid Canterbury has led the way and for that we should be proud. We’ve achieved a lot in the face of adversity. But then again, we’re pretty good at that, aren’t we? There’s so much we can be proud of here in our little neck of

change to ensure the future of a business that’s been around more than 140 years. Shifting the paper to a three-day a week model was a big call but one which was deliberated over for hours on end before a decision was reached. But with change comes new opportunities too. In 2021, we will bid farewell to a long-serving, passionate member of the team in Sue Newman who is calling time on her career with the Guardian after more than three decades. For many, Sue has been the face of the newspaper during that time and has led the editorial team and its coverage with a level of professionalism and passion that is unbridled. Early in the New Year the paper will also have a new editor after I made the tough decision late this year to stand down from the position after almost four years. I’ve loved every minute of my time here and feel privileged to

have been in the position I have. But with change comes new opportunities and a number of new faces will join the team here at the Guardian and continue to deliver quality local news that matters to the people who read these pages. Finally, on behalf of the team here and myself, I would like to extend my best wishes to you all for the New Year and hope that 2021 is both safe and prosperous. We look forward to being a part of it all with you, three-days a week as well as every day in between. Editor, Matt Markham

Making summer unstoppable By Jo Luxton

LABOUR MP

T

his has been a year of phenomenal and unforeseen challenges, but time and again our team of five million has come together in a show of kindness and resilience. Now we find ourselves, in the midst of a global pandemic, relatively well off – and with the promise of safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines on the horizon. Every New Zealander should feel proud of how far we’ve come together this year. I want to take this opportunity to thank the people here in Rangitata. It’s a real privilege to be your local MP. Your compassion during lockdown and your conversations with me on the campaign trail have made me more determined than ever to effect positive change in our community. New Zealanders voted for stability this election. My Labour team is humbled to be the first majority government under MMP in New Zealand. In uncertain times, you put your trust in us – and we know this comes with huge responsibility. We’re getting on with the job

It may be holiday season, but we definitely cannot slacken off with our Covid-19 precautions. of guiding New Zealand through one of the most difficult times in our history. The Government remains committed to keeping New Zealanders safe from Covid-19, accelerating our economic recovery, and laying the foundations to tackle some of our biggest long-term challenges. Already this term we’ve declared a climate emergency and committed to having a car-

bon-neutral public sector within five years, started making our tax system fairer with a new top tax rate, protected drug checking services to keep young festivalgoers safe, introduced legislation to double sick leave to 10 days, and extended our business debt hibernation scheme to continue helping businesses affected by Covid-19. Parliament has wrapped up

for the year, but of course our Covid response doesn’t stop. We’ve put in place a robust plan to keep New Zealanders safe this summer – and everyone has a role to play. As usual, little things can protect us from the virus: staying home if we’re sick, keeping track of where we go, wearing a face covering on public transport, practising good hygiene, and

keeping a safe distance from people we don’t know while out and about. This summer should also be time for a proper break – we all deserve one. We’re fortunate to call New Zealand home. But many small businesses will still be doing it tough. One way you might be able to get in some good rest and relaxation, and help to reboot our economy, is by visiting a corner of New Zealand you’ve never been to before. Local tourism and hospitality operators made big sacrifices for us during lockdown, and their sacrifice continues while borders are closed. The holidays are another chance for us to repay them if we can; with some time away that’ll be a welcome adventure for the family, and a lifeline for local business. Let’s make the most of the warmer months ahead and explore our own backyard, while doing all the little things we know can protect us from Covid. Together we can make this summer unstoppable. COUNCIL

Tough year but targets met By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

When the final numbers were in, the Ashburton District Council found itself in the rare position of ending its last financial year in the red. With Covid-19 pandemic carving a swathe through New Zealand’s economy, the council’s budgets weren’t spared and it ended up with a deficit of $1.9 million on its books, falling short of meeting its $68.6 million budget by $5.3 million. The lockdown meant $588,000 was lost in income from the seven-week closures of the EA Networks Centre, Ashburton Museum and Ashburton Library. Last year the council finished the year with a $7 million surplus. It might have missed budget, but its annual report for the year to June 30 does show it met eight out of the 10 mandatory government-set goals for financial affordability performance benchmarks. It might have been a tight year financially for the council, but it still gave $1.19 million back to the community in grants. The council received 59 per cent of its income from rates, $37.406 million with its greatest area of expenditure at 22 per cent on roads. Covid-19 saw the council’s fees and charges drop by $1.248 million, with the main drop in income from building consents, $700,000, and loss of income from

Ashburton Guardian Wednesday, December 30, 2020

Onwards and upwards in 2021

I

t has been a year like no other. It is fair to say that few of us will miss 2020. I still remember attending a wedding in Auckland in March and while Covid-19 was ramping up globally it still seemed like it was a world away. Journalist Jonathan Leask Within a day of arriving home, New Zealand was headed towards an unprecedented four-week lockdown. At the time I was running the Guardian’s Selwyn App, working from home, so for me it wasn’t so different except I had company at break times. As the pandemic unfolded, the economic pressures on our industries mounted and for the Guardian it meant great change. The Selwyn App was a casualty, and I was redeployed back to the Ashburton Guardian, where it all began 10 years earlier. The paper was relaunched as a tri-weekly paper which has brought with it its own challenges, but if 2020 has taught us anything it’s that we are adaptable. We need to be in a changing world. As well as changes to the job, there have been some major personal changes in 2020, building my first home with my partner and daughter, and 2021 is set for a big start with number two on the way. For a while, the end of the year seemed so far away as the hours and days dragged by during lockdown. Once we got out there was still a sense of nothingness – we could go to the shops and restaurants, but still under restrictions. The news cycle was in drought mode, other than events being cancelled. Things have gradually improved and New Zealand is embracing and surging forward in the new normal behind our closed borders. So here we are at the end of a tumultuous year. While New Zealand was able to escape lockdown and bar a fairly mild second wave on the global scale, we enter the new year with renewed vigour. I believe I speak for all of us when I say onwards and upwards in 2021.

Old dogs, new tricks and a year like no other

I

t’s true, old dogs can learn new tricks. Covid-19 proved that – it was the year I learned to work from home, learned I can work without constant collegial support/noise/interaction and entertainment, learned a bubble of one is a good place to be, that your cat can be your best mate and that I can actually survive without hopping on a plane and heading off to new places. 2020 was hopefully a oneoff. As a country we managed to scrape through, but our changed world will continue to impact on all of us for months, probably years to come. Life may never return to the way it was. Normal now has a new and constantly changing meaning. Many of us will wrap up the year looking at life a little differently. We may have gained a greater appreciation of simpler things, we may have developed new, healthier and dollar-saving habits, or we may have simply plunged back into life as we knew it. However, we’ve ended the year, old dog or young dog, it’s unlikely any one of us can say we haven’t changed in some way – our lifestyle, the way we work, our family relation-

ships, nothing will have been untouched. For us at the Guardian, it as been a year of quite dramatic change. As a daily newspaper we’ve been part of the fabric of the Ashburton District for 140plus years. No more. We have changed. We are no longer a daily paper, rather we’re a thrice weekly more community focused paper. A significant change for the paper’s owners, for readers and for staff. We changed four months ago and the adjustments are still happening. The change is part of the new world of newspapers, the new ways of delivering news, but that change is one new trick this old dog is struggling to make. When you spend a lifetime in the cut and thrust of daily news, when you thrive on being the writer of a front page lead, finding the story that no-one else has found, when deadlines spin your wheels, life without a committed news cycle just doesn’t seem to work the same. My life has been the newspaper industry for more years than I care to remember – ink, words, paper and people, they’ve been an important part of who I am for

decades. But no more. Come early January this old dog is signing out, signing off as a regular on the Guardian’s pay roll. Instead she’ll be on the casual list, doing what needs to be done, when it needs to be done and as the gurus say ... “looking for new opportunities.” If 2020 taught me nothing else, it made me realise that nothing is for ever, the things we take for granted won’t always be there and that ultimately how our ship sails is in our own hands. Roll on 2021 and a year of new beginnings.

Journalist Sue Newman

The writing was on the wall W

hat wild and crazy ride 2020 has been. One could argue that the writing was on the wall, when we all woke up to an apocalyptic-type orange sky on New Year’s Day. Little did we know what was coming as we naively glanced skyward and thought, ‘hmmm that’s weird’ and carried on with our day. Looking back, a darkened sky due to the Australian bush fires was the least of our worries. Thanks to some Chinese guy and his bat collection, or for the conspiracy theorists out there, nefarious scientists in a secret Chinese lab, things got really weird. As the corona virus, as we first called it, until some beer company probably threatened legal action and we all

switched to Covid-19, edged its way closer to our little part of the world, borders were closed and tempers frayed. Not over getting sick, the effects of being locked in our house for weeks, or panicking about the economic fallout of virus that stopped the whole world in its tracks – nope, over toilet paper or who had too many bags of flour in their trolley, who would have predicted that six months ago. Lockdown came and we all put teddy bears in our windows, baked biscuits (I refuse to call them cookies), learned how to download Zoom, stood at dawn and worked from home.

Journalist Heather Mackenzie Working from home was a nightmare for me. Some of my friends loved it, but not me, I thought it was yuck. I am a social sort and need to get out and chat and, let’s face it, the amusement of my cat landing on the keyboard or biting chunks out of my pens wore off pretty dam quick, and become just another distraction I simply didn’t need. However, between our team of five million and with the unlikeliest of New Zealand heroes, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, by our side we made it through and were finally set free ... well, Auckland had a couple of setbacks but they too are all good now. Like anything though, good comes with the bad. I spent lockdown with my lovely daughter who continues to amaze me. Yes there were some tantrums along the way, but she took my outbursts in her stride and quietly retreated to her part of the house. For once her and I had time to notice the bees on our thyme plant, sort out the kitchen drawers, sadly a long overdue task, and we talked, really talked to each other, that is something I will cherish for years to come. If Covid-19 has taught us anything it is that people, communities and wellbeing are vital to all of us. It is my hope for 2021 that we remember to slow the pace down, notice the colour purple (a quote from one of my favourite movies), spend time outside in the weather rain or shine, shop locally and be grateful for small things.

Civic centre contractor negotiations under way

By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Work is one giant step closer to starting on Ashburton’s longawaited civic centre and library. Plans for the $52 million complex, designed by Athfield Architects, were signed off in August and on the last Thursday before Christmas, the Ashburton District Council confirmed Naylor Love as its preferred contractor for the project’s construction. Detailed contract negotiations have now started between the council and the contract company, with the outcome of those

negotiations to be released in the new year. The announcement follows an open tender process and assessment of tenders by a panel including councillors, senior council staff and independent third party experts. The complex’s design reflects the community and the environment and reflects the connection to Baring Square east and celebrates views to the Southern Alps. There are flexible internal spaces and the historic Pioneer Hall will be incorporated into the library area. When the project went out for community consultation, the over-riding request from the

community was for the council not to cut corners, but to spend money and build something that would last well into the future. There is extensive use of timber both as an interior and exterior cladding, glass is widely used along with steel as a reference to the district’s grain heritage silos. Colours and materials used incorporate themes and features inspired by the district’s rivers and its agricultural economy. Floor coverings will include Timaru bluestone, timber and areas of woollen carpet tiles. Library spaces flow over two levels and include a performance area, spaces for wet play

areas and craft spaces, an audio and video recording studio and study zones, with many areas opening out to an east facing courtyard that will include a rain garden. Several exterior walls will be covered in mesh and climbing plants to create living walls. The third level staff work areas continued the flexible work space theme with few meeting rooms and a number of small gathering spaces. The main entrance to the complex will be from Baring Square with a visual link from the clocktower across a revamped square to the civic centre door. There

will be a second entrance from Havelock Street directly into the library. In keeping with a drive to ensure all areas could have flexible use, the second level council chamber will be a multi-functional space and can be used for community or council staff functions. It will have an area dubbed the ‘civic balcony’ that provides an area to take in views across Ashburton to the Southern Alps. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2022 and the complete design package can be viewed on www.ashburtondc.govt.nz

OUR VIEW

Just go with the flow By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

I

’ve clocked up a few kilometres this festive season getting around Canterbury to see family and friends. I’ve had my daughter and pregnant partner in the car, so suffice to say I’ve been a little more patient behind the wheel. But I’ve also been on edge because there are still plenty of drivers who haven’t got the message. Accidents can happen, but from what I’ve seen the last few days many of them could be avoidable. When traffic is heavy and everyone is cruising along at around that 90-100km mark, there are still those few drivers that think their journey is far more important and need to move up the queue to get to their destination a minute or two earlier. So they zoom up the passing lane and the whole convoy slows down so they can squeeze back in. The worst example was the fully-loaded family vehicle with bikes on the back that weaved in and out of the traffic to move up the queue, cutting people off and slowing everyone down behind them. It was dangerous and I can only assume the father behind the wheel must not have had the same sense of safety for his family that I had, or else he woud have been happy to tick along at 95km/h in the long line of traffic. Still, I gave him a wave when we, and all the other cars they had passed, pulled up alongside them at the next set of traffic lights. We should all know the traffic is going to be heavy, but we all have the same rules and rights to be on the road – so why do these few still put the rest of us in danger for the sake of getting somewhere a few minutes early. What they are doing is putting them and others at risk of not reaching their destination at all. At the time of writing this the road toll was already seven. For whatever the cause and factors involved, that’s seven too many. If you are in that much of a hurry to get where you are going, leave earlier. The other drivers are not an inconvenience to you, your dangerous driving is an inconvenience to them. So can we please have a bit more common-sense and a bit more courtesy. Just go with the flow or face the consequences of adding to the statistics.

New freshwater regulations will return agriculture in Mid Canterbury back to the 1970s, with dire economic consequences for not just farmers, but the entire district, says the province’s Federated Farmers president David Clark. The Minister for the Environment David Parker and Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor need to front up to communities and explain the economic and social impacts of the rules they implemented, Clark said. No economic analysis was carried out by government on the freshwater reforms. “It was rushed, the submissions from the agricultural sector were largely ignored and we have ended up with legislation that is impractical, unworkable and unachievable.” The new rules contained arbitrary rules and dates for winter grazing that were impractical. There were also issues around

rules for stock exclusion from waterways, Clark said. “The most disappointing part of this is that we already had rules in place through the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan. These are now going to be chucked out and we’ve got to start from scratch.” The biggest impact for Canterbury would come from the tightening of freshwater nitrogen-nitrate limits for rivers from 6.9mg nitrogen per litre to 2.4mg/l under the new regulations. “That will largely be the end of irrigated arable and dairying in Canterbury as we know it. But that is what the government of the day have decided they want to do,” Clark said. An Ashburton District Council report conservatively estimated that collectively farm profitability across the district will decline $57.9 million (or 83 per cent) per year, while farm expenditure within the district will also decline by $139.9m (or 23 per cent). continued next page

From P10 The analysis applied the economic impact of Environment Canterbury’s rules in the Hinds plains catchment over the whole of Mid Canterbury. This was based on the level of 6.9mg/l that farmers were already working towards. The report said that to achieve a 48 per cent reduction in nutrient loss, all farm businesses will need to significantly change their production systems. This involved reducing inputs, investment into new infrastructure, changes away from the current use of land and generally operating a lower input farm system. Clark said that achieving the 2.4mg/l level as required under the new freshwater regulations would be an exponentially greater cost for businesses and he urged the council to revisit their report based on this figure. The new rules would result in farmers not investing in their businesses, such as replacing dairy sheds and other infrastruc-

ture. “People in Ashburton need to recognise that there will be a significant social and economic cost to ensure that the Hinds drains run into the sea at less than 2.4mg/l,” Clark said. Practices covered by the regulations include regular farming activities such as winter grazing of forage crops, stock exclusion from waterways, land use intensification, application of nitrogen and stocking rates. A Southland Advisory Group, asked to look at the implementation of intensive winter grazing rules has asked that pugging rules and, in particular, resowing dates should be deleted from Government regulations as they are unfair. A slope rule, which bans winter grazing on slopes greater than 10 degrees, should be amended to allow intensive winter grazing on slopes of 15 degrees or less, the group said. O’Connor has previously said the freshwater rules could be “tweaked”.

August 2020 At the end of each year, Guardian staff choose the best of the year’s photos to share with you all and reminisce.

Above – Paul Finch (left), Keith Pickford, Peter McQuarters, Ian Begbie and Richard Sampson outside the former i-SITE building which was awarded to the Mid Canterbury Aero Club. Below – Six years after he took on the role of facilities manager at the EA Networks Centre, Steve Prescott announced he was moving on.

Above – Businesses around Mid Canterbury were bracing for the impact of a potential second wave of Covid-19 as an outbreak thrust Auckland into alert level 3, teetering towards another alert level 4 lockdown, and the rest of the country back to alert level 2. Phat Duck manager Nigel ‘Skip’ Joyce said the announcement of a return to level 2 was “like being punched in the guts again”. . Below – El Ouafi Aghoutan, with his wife Faiza Kaouachi, was at the Linwood Islamic Centre the day of the mosque shootings and welcomed the welcomed verdict in the shooter’s trial and was pleased he could close the book on a traumatic chapter in his life.

Licensed firearm holders took to the streets of Ashburton demanding changes to the new gun laws. Hundreds assembled for the third installment of protests in Ashburton on the Government’s Firearms Law Reforms demanding fair and reasonable treatment.

Champagne corks were popping as members of the Ashburton Bowling Club broke their early afternoon drinking rules to celebrate the guaranteed survival of their club. The Ashburton Domain bowlers were under threat of eviction from their club’s home of 125 years when the Ashburton District Council came up with a 30-year plan for the domain that included moving the bowlers’ club house and greens to a new site.

KUROW

Enzo’s Lad primed for Kurow Cup There may be a major weight disparity between Enzo’s Lad and his rivals in the PGG Wrightson Kurow Cup (1400m) today, but it’s the track conditions that are the biggest concern for trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman. The Christchurch conditioners elected to bypass the Listed Hazlett Stakes (1200m) on Saturday with their charge because of the Dead6 track conditions, and they are hoping the Kurow track can improve from a similar rating before today’s race. “He just loves rock hard tracks,” Matthew Pitman said. “We decided to bypass Dunedin because his last couple of starts haven’t been on tracks to suit and we thought he needed a confidence boosting run. “We are hoping Kurow will dry out a little bit.” The dual Group One winner will carry 61kg with the assistance of apprentice jockey Kavish Chowdhoory’s one kilogram claim, and Pitman believes he will be competitive if the track improves. “He showed last year that he can be competitive over 1400m,” Pitman said. “He has a bit of weight to carry,

Enzo’s Lad (outer) is a big chance for the Pitmans in the Kurow Cup today. but he is a class horse. “If he gets a track to suit him, we expect him to be competitive. “His main aim is the Group One (Telegraph, 1200m) at Wellington and that is what we are building towards.” Enzo’s Lad has a strong associ-

ation with the Telegraph, having won the race in 2018 and 2019, before finishing runner-up to Avantage in this year’s edition. Pitman said the eight-year-old gelding will follow a similar leadup over the next month. “He will head back to Waik-

ouaiti and get ready there,” Pitman said. “That has been the tried-andtrue plan the last two years, so we will take the same path. He will use the beach and hill there to get ready and he will head up to Trentham on the Tuesday or Wednes-

day before the Telegraph.” A stablemate that could join Enzo’s Lad on the float trip north next month is Gr.1 Levin Classic (1600m) contender Watchmaker. The son of Pins will start in the Couplands Working Dog Handicap (1400m) today, and Pitman said he will need to put in a good showing to warrant a trip north. “Watchmaker is a horse we have a high opinion of,” he said. “He has shown he has a touch of class about him and he is another one potentially getting ready for another Group One at Wellington, in the Levin Classic. “We were happy with his run in the 2000 Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m). He was a touch unlucky and ran on well to finish seventh. “We think he is pretty right, but he will need to show that tomorrow to be a serious contender in a race like the Levin Classic.” The Pitmans will have a strong representation at Kurow, and they have highlighted Cannoli as one of their better chances in the Rural Transport Handicap (1800m). “On her last two runs, Cannoli is knocking on the door,” Pitman said. “She should finally get that win tomorrow.”

THE YEAR THAT WAS

Top 10 sporting moments The sporting world in all facets of its existence was thrown into chaos earlier this year. And while the pandemic continues to implicate sport significantly worldwide, the feat of getting competitions back in action felt like a sporting accomplishment in itself. Guardian sports reporter Adam Burns looks back on 10 highlights of a madcap 12 months. pandemic intensified, it finally gave into the fact that the Olympic Games in Japan would not go ahead in 2020. The postponement “beyond 2020 and no later than the summer of 2021” was a major blow to the athletes who time their run and preparation meticulously to peak accordingly. The event will retain the 2020 designation for branding and marketing purposes. But who would be an Olympics organiser with the pressure of billions of dollars on the line?

Covid-19 It kind of goes without saying doesn’t it. But the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns came in like a tidal wave which brought all sport, from the grassroots to the elite, to a grinding halt. It began with the NBA (which feels like a lifetime ago) shutting down, with all sport following suit as empty stadiums and canned competitions made for a surreal existence. It also made being a sports reporter toilsome to say the least.

All Blacks v Wallabies at Eden Park A personal favourite amid test rugby’s return. Played in front of a bumper Eden Park crowd in glorious October sunshine, it was the All Blacks’ inevitable riposte against the Wallabies followed a frustrating draw in Wellington seven days earlier. It was an 80 minutes which rendered good feelings for All Black supporters and unearthed the barnstorming threat that a 20-year-old Caleb Clark posed, in setting up Ardie Savea for one of the tryscoring highlights of the year.

Broadcasting upheaval The sports broadcasting minefield which has become part and parcel of the commercial landscape hit murky waters domestically this year. And as we settle into the cricket season, it continues to be a major talking point. The backlash from New Zealand Cricket’s move to Spark Sport late last year has re-ignited over the past few weeks, as the reality of not seeing the Black Caps’ latest test series win set in.

Community sport The All Blacks brought their A game to Eden Park in October. The governing body also ditched Radio Sport back in February as far as radio coverage, with NZME and NZC unable to come to an agreement upon renewal. It would only be a matter of weeks before Radio Sport was gone altogether, as Covid continued to cut off more and more competitions and events.

Liverpool end drought The perennial underachievers of English football finally ended three decades of hurt to clinch their first league title since 1990 and did so in record breaking fashion. It probably did not transpire the way Reds supporters envisioned, as Covid threw a curveball into proceedings with the option of voiding the season and with it Liverpool’s march towards the trophy. It was only eight days after the EPL resumed in mid-June that Jurgen Klopp’s men would be crowned champions, having held a lead as enormous as 25 points at one point.

The Last Dance The intimate Netflix series which chronicled Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls’ dominance of the NBA in the 90s was as timely a dose of sporting escapism as you could get during lockdown. The Last Dance portrayed a mindset in sport which examined how far and how brutal MJ was willing to go with his team-mates to drive his side to success, and some of these themes resonated with general viewers who had little love or knowledge in basketball. It also foreshadowed the GOAT debate, which flared up later in the year when LeBron led the Lakers to the NBA title.

Warriors take one for the team The Warriors earned their fair share of goodwill amid the pandemic. With no feasible option in playing any games in New Zealand with the Government’s self-isolation restrictions, the Penrose-based club opted to base themselves in Australia for the remainder of the competition, putting an emotional strain on players and families. A respectable 10th place finish capped a tough campaign which cost head coach Stephen Kearney his job.

Novak defaulted

The voice of cricket, Bryan Waddle, was silenced in 2020.

Novak Djokovic was sensationally defaulted from September’s US Open after he accidentally hit a lineswoman in the throat during his fourth round clash with Pablo Carreno Busta. Not intentional, of course, but the rules are clear cut and even the world No. 1 was not immune to being reprimanded. Whether the woman, who was subject to vitriol online, milked it or not is besides the point. But it felt like a moment which drew a line in the sand to discourage some of the more inherent habits of the sport which previously have been indulged.

Tokyo Olympics postponed The International Olympic Committee (IOC) may have dug its heels, but as the

She was a strange old year, but imagine how bleak it would have been if community sport was wiped out entirely. It was a thankless task for numerous organisers, administrators and volunteers who were forced into extra hours of work to ensure that compliance of the evolving restrictions issued down by the Government and sporting bodies were met. While many events were understandably canned, makeshift competitions and events were put in place. But once sport was able to return at the grassroots, both young and old, and with spectators looking on once they were given the all clear, was highly gratifying for all concerned.

Co-hosting rights of 2023 Women’s World Cup In a major sporting coup for this country, it was announced in June that New Zealand would jointly host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Huge! Considering how many eyes the 2019 edition in France commanded (1 billion according to FIFA) it will be – if the world has returned to some normality by then – a footballing fiesta like no other with the opening game and a semi-final among other fixtures to be played on Kiwi soil. As big as any sporting event ever hosted in this country.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck led the Warriors in Australia.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): It is as difficult for people who feel dominated to love or respect their aggressor as it is for aggressive people to love or respect those who will submit to them. There is no true affinity without equality. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Certain themes pass through your experience and conversations, subjects come up so predictably you don’t give them a second thought, though they are most worthy of your consideration now. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You could control it all today, but it wouldn’t be as fun. Include some indeterminacy by letting someone or something else decide what direction you head in, à la coin toss, random draw... CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Today, the world is a puzzle that will come together just as soon as you decide what the picture is supposed to be. Determine the meaning and all the supporting evidence will fall into place. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’re able to detach and be objective about your situation. In an act of self-ethnography, you will document your observations of yourself as though you were a foreign culture. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Sacrifice is admirable under the right circumstance though if it’s the default mode and is happening basically of the time, it’s not generous so much as pathological. Today’s priority should be you. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You can take the fact that everyone is trying to steal your attention as a clue to exactly how valuable it is, which is to say extremely. Attention makes things happen. Direct it carefully now. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Don’t worry about how many you’ve got on board right now. When you’re trying to do all you can to make the project go, remarkable people will come to your aid. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The game isn’t rigged; it’s just random and unpredictable. If there’s one outcome for you, and another for someone else, don’t assume there’s any rhyme or reason. Do what you can with what you have. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Just when you thought you knew what you were good at, you find out that you have a natural knack for something heretofore unconsidered. Amazing! AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): What you really care about is hidden. Where does your mind flow? What captures your interest the longest? Maybe it’s not exactly that, but it’s buried inside of it. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): To take on a creative project is to affirm your ability to take a thing from nothing to something. It doesn’t matter how well the “something” turns out, it only matters that you move forward through uncertainty.

MIDWEEK SPORT

Aussies routed by India India has registered one of the great bounce-back victories, beating Australia at the MCG by eight wickets, on the fourth day of the test. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane, filling in for Virat Kohli who is on baby duty, swatted the winning run yesterday afternoon, after India had some early jitters by losing two wickets in their run chase. Ajinkya has now scored three from three as skipper, and done it with a team comprehensively thrashed by the Australians only a week ago. India had to work very hard to take out Australia’s lower order, but still, by the time R. Ashwin wrapped up the innings on the stroke of a delayed lunch yesterday, the

lead stood at only 69. Shubman Gill stepped up for India, and with Rahane eventually hit the target with ease. Australia had resumed just two runs ahead and while Cummins and Cameron Green survived until the second new ball the scoreboard went nowhere – 16 runs in the 14 overs. In India’s first innings, Rahane knocked up a superb 112 in the face of the much-vaunted Aussie pace attack, but he was run out when Jadeja was seeking a single on 49. Rahane and Jadeja (57) had steered India to a first-innings advantage with their 121-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

Rahane soaked up the pressure applied by Australia’s bowlers in his patient, 223ball knock, hitting 12 boundaries in his 112. At the tail end of Australia’s innings, the harder ball provided the breakthrough when Jasprit Bumrah bounced out Cummins although the fact India did not race through the rest of the batting went on to highlight Australia’s problems higher up the order. Green played very well, looking as assured as any of the top order had in the innings, defending with a solid front foot stride and occasionally showing his strokeplay. A first test fifty was looming when he

was cramped for room by a short delivery from Mohammed Siraj, splicing a pull to midwicket, which removed the last realistic chance of Australia setting a target to really challenge India. Starc thought he was caught at slip on 9, so much so that he was two thirds of way to the rope having forlornly reviewed when the DRS showed he had hit his boot as the ball ballooned off the pad, but Nathan Lyon gloved down the leg side a few moments later to leave Australia nine down. Lunch was delayed as the final pair clung on before Hazlewood was finally befuddled by Ashwin when he left a delivery that clipped off stump.
