A raft of safe crossing points have been labelled as urgent, including one within the Tinwald corridor.

Crossing points urgently needed By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Safe crossing points are needed on at least four sections of state highways in the Ashburton district, but there is a huge gap between need and the funds available to do the work. The case for the safe crossings was made at Tuesday’s Ashburton District Road Safety Co-ordinating Committee’s meeting for pedestrian refuges on State Highway One near the rail over bridge to provide access to Ashburton Domain and on Archiba-
ld Street in Tinwald, across State Highway 77 in Methven and in Rakaia. Methven’s safe refuge is needed for children crossing the highway to the village’s schools and from the new skatepark to public toilets, deputy mayor Liz McMillan said. Getting those projects onto NZ Transport Agency’s work programme, however, would rely on funding being available and that could mean a wait of up to two years, said NZTA maintenance contract manager John Keenan. Project applications needed to be lodged by November each
year, and with none of Ashburton’s pedestrian refuges on the books it would require a strong case to be made by the Ashburton District Council and the community for any action in the short term, he said. Access to Ashburton Domain for people using the rail over bridge and trying to cross the highway in Tinwald involved a high risk, committee member and Ashburton District councillor Diane Rawlinson said. Ashburton was missed off a list of possible safe crossing locations compiled seven years ago and that hampered its case to-
day. To get action now the council needed to be the proverbial squeaky wheel, Keenan said. “To help with this I’d recommend you formally write to us requesting safe crossing points, where you want them and why. They’ll then go into our programme but unfortunately they might take a while until there is funding available and they get ticked off,” he said. He urged the committee to list those crossings in priority order and NZTA would then look at each and when funding became available, would look at each and work out the most appropriate
locations. In making a pitch for safe crossing locations, it was important to identify all the interconnecting pathways as that helped engineers identify the best location, Keenan said. “The broader the information you give us the more it will help us get funding and in terms of our safety construction projects it’s really up to you to get this in as quickly as possible.” Three of the crossing points are included in the council’s walking and cycling strategy and the over bridge crossing will be added to this.

Delilah catches judges’ eye Mid Canterbury-owned ayrshire cow wins again By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz
The judges can’t keep their eyes off a Mid Canterbury-owned ayrshire cow named Delilah, who has won an unprecedented clean sweep of dairy titles at showing events this season. In her latest triumph, Pukekaraka Elle Delilah, owned by the Gilbert family, won the 2021 all breeds supreme exhibit at the New Zealand Dairy Event at Feilding. This is the first time an ayrshire has won supreme exhibit over the bigger numbers of jersey and holstein friesian cows on show. She also had to travel the furthest to compete, with the Gilbert family being the only South Island exhibitors at the NZ Dairy Event. “She did it again which is very exciting for us,” Michael Gilbert said. In November, Delilah won supreme champion all breeds at the Stratford A&P Show in Taranaki, a big dairy show. This followed her winning the Canterbury A&P dairy competition which was run on-farm following the cancellation of the New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch. “She is a very well put together cow. She has all the traits that judges look for. She is a high milk cow and it is important for judges to see that milking ability and a very good udder to hold that milk. She walks very well and is everything you want from a dairy cow,” Gilbert said. Running in a 600 cow herd on the farm, Delilah was on track to produce about 600kg of milksolids this season. “During show season she is separated with the other show cows, but the rest of the year she runs in the herd just like any other cow.” Delilah was now back in the herd and would not compete again until the New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch in

ASHBURTON COURT
Drink driver ‘on a knife edge’ – judge A man who has now been convicted for half-a-dozen drink driving offences appears to be on thin ice with the justice system. Clifford James Duckmanton was sentenced in the Ashburton District Court on Monday after pleading guilty to two counts of driving with excess breath alcohol last year. The court heard that the 37-year-old was allegedly speeding on State Highway 1 north around 5.20pm on February 1, 2020. He denied that he had been drinking, however he was later found to have 949 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. The second charge relates to another incident on March 7 when around midday he was pulled over on Gabraith Street,
Ashburton. Another breath alcohol test returned a reading of 764 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, the court heard. “It is astounding that you would put not only yourself, but other road users at risk,” Judge Gerard Lynch said.
Lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist made a point that the offending came following some “relationship difficulties” in the man’s personal life. The man has also engaged with He Waka Tapu, the court heard. Judge Lynch said it was im-
portant the man continue on this path as he was now “on a knife edge”. The man has five previous drink driving convictions between 2002 and 2014, all of which were at “high levels” of the scale, the judge said. The court heard the man was dissatisfied with his lawyer’s recommendation of nine months’ home detention and pushed for a six month sentence. “There is an attitude problem here,” Judge Lynch said. “Another excess charge and you are going to jail. Simple as that. “You’re a risk to yourself and to other road users.” Duckmanton was sentenced to nine months home detention and was subjected to the alcohol interlock licence regime.
Bar tussle ‘went over the line’ A 61-year-old man has been forced to pay emotional reparations after a bar altercation allegedly went sour. Daniel Gerard McGillen pleaded guilty to an assault charge on Monday. The Rakaia truck-driver, who has no history of violence, initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, however he changed his plea upon reviewing CCTV footage of the October 17 incident, the court heard.
It was alleged the man was socialising with a group of friends at the South Rakaia Hotel when another bar patron “deliberately and forcefully” pushed him into a wall. McGillen then allegedly reacted with a flurry of punches directed at the man’s head before other patrons intervened, the court was told. McGillen’s lawyer made further reference to an ongoing beef between the two men where it was
alleged the victim often goaded the defendant and called him “a w*nker”. Defence counsel argued that the man accepted the charge, however he was provoked as opposed to something which was more pre-meditated. Police prosecutor sergeant Chris MacFarlane countered these sentiments, saying there was a good three second period after the initial push before McGillen responded, based on
the CCTV footage. “I’m not sure if there is some bad blood between the two,” Judge Lynch said. “But the incident stepped well over the line.” Judge Lynch did not believe community work would hold any value given the man was fully employed, and that no rehabilitation was required. McGillen was ordered to pay $500 emotional reparations to the victim.
Lockdown breacher remanded A man facing multiple charges, including one during lockdown, accepts he has a drug problem. However, his defence counsel took aim at police for overzealous checkups during the lockdown period during deliberations at the Ashburton District Court on Monday. Benjamin William Wederell appeared on multiple charges including obstructing a medical officer during lockdown, refusing an officer’s request for a blood test, driving while disqualified and possession of cannabis and a utensil. His lawyer Roz Burnside argued for an intensive supervision sentence considering the man spent four weeks in custody. The court heard the man believed he was unfairly targeted by local police during lockdown where he was holed up in motel with police allegedly completing one to two visits to the motel a day. Defense counsel also argued that his infractions during lockdown were minor and were no worse than “taking green waste to the dump”. Judge Gerard Lynch refuted this, saying “the majority of people in this courtroom followed the rules”. Wederell was already serving a sentence of community work, in which he had completed 25 hours of the required 60 hours before “falling off the wagon” with drugs. “My client accepts he has a drug problem.” It is alleged he had not reported for community work since November 29. The judge disagreed with the recommendation for supervision, considering the man’s poor compliance with community work. “I’m not entirely sure how probation came to that point.” He was remanded for sentencing on March 15.
Drugs and drink an all-too common theme The following also appeared in front of Judge Gerard Lynch at the Ashburton District Court on Monday: Teresa Morehu Tuteru Te Aroha Brown-Painter pleaded guilty to charges of possession of cannabis and a utensil and refusing an officer’s request for a blood test. The woman was pulled over late in the evening on December 23 when she was sober driving for some friends, the court heard. Police observed a “strong smell of cannabis” coming from the car and found a bong and five grams of cannabis inside the vehicle. The woman was ordered to pay a $500 fine and was disqualified from driving for six months. Aaron Christopher Robinson pleaded guilty to driving with excess breath alcohol. The 48-yearold has 10 previous convictions for drink driving, however his most recent was three years ago with his next two charges dating back to 2012. A string of offences prior to these dates are around the “late 90s and early 2000s”. His lawyer argued that his “past had caught up with him” and that his latest offence was at the “lower level”. The Timaru man was pulled
over on Archibald Street, Ashburton on December 3. He recorded a breath alcohol reading of 461 micrograms per litre of breath. The man was remanded for sentencing on March 29.
“intent to escape” for which the man pleaded guilty. He maintained a not guilty plea for the assault charge. The matters were deferred to a case review hearing on April 19.
Desmond Cyril Lawrence Angus appeared on charges of possession of cannabis for supply. The man’s legal defence argued that he was merely the middle man and that he should be convicted and discharged. It is alleged the man had bought four ounces, two of which he was on-selling to a friend in Invercargill. The man has previous convictions, none of which are for drugs, the court heard. The man who is currently on ACC due to a broken tibia was set for a community works charge, however the judge believed this was not appropriate given the man’s injuries. The judge also thought a fine would “simply take food off the table” for the man’s young family. He was convicted and discharged.
Dean Aaron Clothier and Dion Bailey Clothier jointly appeared on charges relating to cultivating cannabis and burglary. The matters were deferred to case review on April 19.
William Mala Tai appeared on charges comprising common assault, escape from police custody and a firearm offence. Police amended the escape charge to
Belinda Jo Kenny pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully obtaining a bank card. Her lawyer indicated that her client was “extremely remorseful” and offered to make an emotional harm payment to the victim. Kenny was remanded on bail till March 29. Allan Wirihana Marshall pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excess blood alcohol. The man has nine previous offences for drink driving, however they date back at least 13 years, the court heard. Marshall was remanded on bail and will be sentenced on March 15. Kenneth James Lynn appeared on multiple charges including wilful damage, threats to kill or cause
grievous bodily harm, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. He was remanded on bail until March 15 Cory Rangi Tahiri Bates (33) appeared on possession of an offensive weapon, possession of utensils for methamphetamine use and breaching court release conditions. The Ashburton steel worker was allegedly found in possession of 0.6 grams of meth, a pipe and a samurai sword in his car when he was pulled over on Moore Street overnight on December 21-22. He appeared in Christchurch upon arrest where there was opposition to the man being released on bail, something which his lawyer Paul Bradford believed there were no grounds for. The judge declined to add a curfew to his bail conditions. He was remanded on bail with conditions to not use any non-prescribed drugs or be in possession of any weapons. Tony-Lee Nathan Berger-Sewell appeared on charges of receiving property, two counts of careless driving and driving while impaired. The 27-year-old was alleged to have been operating a motor vehicle carelessly in Otira
on State Highway 73 and at Porters Pass. His blood was found to have evidence of a controlled substance, charging documents indicated. The man will be sentenced on March 15. Matthew Hylton Thomson (48) appeared for a case review hearing on a charge of obstructing an enforcement officer and driving with excess breath alcohol. It follows an alleged incident on September 24 when the man was pulled over on Bremners Road where he was recorded to have 958mg of alcohol per litre of breath. Remand continued until May 6. David Edward Johnson appeared on two charges comprising of assault on a person in a family relationship and using insulting language for which the man pleaded guilty to. He was remanded until May 6. Colum O’Reilly and Diarmuid Cleary jointly appeared on an intent to injure and cause grievous bodily harm charge relating to an alleged incident on July 23. Cleary was remanded on bail until April 19 while O’Reilly, who sought a sentence indication, was bailed until March 29.

Vintage cars’ big day out By Maddison Gourlay
maddison.g@theguardian.co.nz
Saturday’s early temperature might have been a little on the cold side, but that played perfectly into the hands of the Ashburton Vintage Car Club which held its annual rally. This year marked the 52nd year of the club’s event and drew 72 cars of all shapes and sizes as well as five motorbike entries. The eldest vehicle on the run this year as a 1915 Douglas motorcycle. Entries consisted of a wide variety of vehicles and age brackets with veteran, vintage, war and classic era vehicles making up those who took on the run. In order to make it onto the starting list for the rally, vehicles must have reached the 30th anniversary of their construction date. The rally consisted of two journeys, a short 30-mile run with no shingle roads and a 57-mile run with a checkpoint in Arundel. Both runs met up for a lunch in Geraldine and also met with car enthusiast Roger Mahan who showed them around his vast collection before pointing the vehicles back in the direction of home.

In brief Tinwald corridor A strategic case has been completed for the Tinwald corridor and a design philosophy statement is being prepared. Discussions are under way with the Z Service Station owners about potential changes to their site to allow traffic signals to be installed at the Lagmhor Road - Agnes Street intersection with State Highway One. The project is on target for the business case and concept design to be completed by May, but physical works are unlikely to start until 2022.

As part of the Tinwald corridor project, the Ashburton District Council wants passing bays developed on the two pedestrian/cycle lanes on either side of the Ashburton River bridge. It has also asked NZTA for a pedestrian crossing to be installed somewhere between Moore Street and Carters Terrace to provide safe access for pedestrians and cyclists using the pedestrian/cycle lanes to cross State Highway One in safety.

No change to wire rope median By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
The public’s reaction might not have been what the NZ Transport Agency wanted to hear, but Ashburton mayor Neil Brown says their comments on the proposed wire rope median barrier on State Highway One should be taken into account.
He might have been absent from Tuesday’s Ashburton Road Safety co-ordinating committee meeting, but Brown made sure his question found its way onto the meeting agenda. He wanted to know what had happened to that feedback, because most of it had not been in favour of the proposed wire rope median. Feedback from the commu-
nity and stakeholders was taken on board by the project team, NZTA Canterbury West Coast maintenance contract manager John Keenan said, but it may or may not alter the outcome, he said. When they started working on detailed designs, they would be likely to come back to the council seeking comments on the plans, Keenan said.
The Selwyn to Ashburton upgrade project has been taken over by NZTA’s Safe Networks Programme team and the preferred option after a feasibility investigation is for a nine kilometre wire rope median barrier to be installed, with a rural roundabout at the Synlait intersection and an urban roundabout at the South Town Belt intersection in Rakaia.
A new road safety project could soon be launched in the Ashburton District, one that would help children become road rule smart before they take to the road on their bikes. Safer Mid Canterbury is keen to develop an off-road, mini-street environment that would come complete with give way and stop signs. A similar programme is running in Timaru and Christchurch. It could be based on an unused tennis court and as the signs were moveable it could be taken to schools.
Red road signs A pitch has been made by Ashburton’s road safety coordinating committee for large red warning and speed signs to be painted on Ashburton roads. The signs are used to alert motorists to a speed change. They might be a simple, low cost safety measure, but Ashburton’s Road Safety co-ordinating committee was told at its Tuesday’s meeting there was no money in the NZ Transport Agency’s budget for the signs to be painted on Ashburton roads.

OUR VIEW
Cooking with gas, or perhaps with something else By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
A
re the days of the humble Kiwi barbecue coming to an end as we know them? Getting a group of mates together, turning on the gas bottle and hitting the ignition switch is a way of life for so many of us, especially at this time of the year. But are our efforts to battle climate change going to stand in the way of such a time-honoured tradition and force us to stray away from the normal and find a new way of getting that perfect sear on your steak or the ultimate cook on that meat pattie for a burger. If you missed it, the Climate Change Commission’s first report, which was released this week, has taken aim at one of the key ingredients to the humble barbecue and in fact many other key essentials of life as we know it – gas. The report suggests that it is time to cut gas to help cut the country’s emissions levels, with the new plan suggesting an end to new natural gas connections to the network or bottled LPG after 2025. Goodbye, gas-powered barbecue. Goodbye, homes heated and run by LPG tanks. Goodbye to restaurants’ cooking methods which utilise the ease of using gas to send food out of their kitchens. It’s a strange situation to even have to think about. And perhaps it’s not until you look at your own life that you realise just how much gas plays a part in your going about your day-to-day business. Of course, for now, it’s only a suggestion, but the way these things move it’s a suggestion that could very quickly become reality and therefore force homes and businesses around the country to quickly adapt – and at a significant financial cost too. So, as the summer months roll on, enjoy cooking your dinner on the barbecue while enjoying some sunshine and good company. Who knows just how much longer it’s a luxury that we will be able to enjoy before we have to change tack and do it in a different way.
YOUR VIEW Ashburton Council finances I must have missed some info
when I left council. The rates covered the finished cost of the Admin-Library project and the relief waste main. The council have recieved
a ratepayer boost of $20 million for the build and $13 million for the waste main, so with a $33 million windfall why an excessive possible rate rise.
Could I suggest that councilors read their own freshwater report before they make their final decisions. Peter Reveley

On behalf of men’s posteriors By Malcolm Hopwood
E
ntering a woman’s fashion store is one of my worst nightmares. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the latest chic styles. It’s more that I don’t have anywhere to sit. Peter Mac’s Pulitzer Prize winning column last Saturday reminded me of how middle-aged men stumble around women’s sexy dresses, not knowing where to look. Peter was writing for posterity. I’m writing for posteriors. Now men are essential in choosing the latest urban, newage garment. We’re there to answer important questions such as “does it match my eyes?” or “will this hide my bum?” or “do I look fat?” We’re there to give other essential assurances that only men can offer from their debonair background of tees and beach shorts. “Your bare arms look great.” “Yes, there’s only a hint of cleavage.” “Your hair will get caught in your zip.” How about “when you walk out of the shop, you’ll be the talk of the town”. That’s the clincher. By then, you’ve been standing far too long, your feet hurt and you’ve missed the first race of the Louis Vuitton series. But everything could change if there was a seat. You’d stay longer, reply to mates on
Facebook, smile at the shop assistant, practise raising your eyebrows, important when she appears in the latest 2021 creation and look at the death notices in The Guardian, pretending to be a statistic if she takes too long. You might even say “try the other one on dear, the little pink, off-the-shoulder number.” You mightn’t either. It depends on your emotional wellbeing. The problem is a seat or lack
of it. You can’t hide in the lingerie department in case you get too close to the flesh-coloured knickers. You look around and see the word “pervert” forming on people’s lips. You can try being a dare-devil and say “I might try this bra on for size”. The shop assistant gives you that pained expression. She’s heard it before from guys well passed their libido. “Dressing room 3.”
But there’s method in your madness, you can close the curtain and sit down. Refreshed, relaxed after 10 minutes, you burst out and say “it’s just another storm in a C cup”. By then your partner has gone. She’d left the shop in embarrassment, vowing never to return and waiting for you on the far side of the traffic cones. All this could be solved with the installation of a customer seat. Could Menzshed Ashbur-
ton help and design and build something that fits the contours of a male bottom? The next challenge is where to put it. Not facing the Elle Macphersons, nor too close to the dressing sheds so other customers trip over your size 10s. Instead, somewhere where you can look out on East Street, practise the Royal wave and give the impression you own the shop. No butts, just do it.
‘Why do we keep giving these people a platform?’ By Saziah Bashir
N
obody is racist anymore. Apparently we live in a post-racial world. I don’t know when it happened, I clearly missed the memo. Was this sometime between the slew of Maori children being taken by Oranga Tamariki and the latest Aboriginal death in custody in Australia? Or sometime between Trump’s Muslim ban and George Floyd’s death at the hands (knees?) of police? Did the Mediterranean suddenly become buoyant enough to safeguard passage for the refugees that would otherwise be drowning in it trying to get to safer lands? That’s an unexpected side effect of climate change! Someone also forgot to inform the right wing extremist group burning crosses while wearing hoods last weekend in the bush in Victoria. Awkward! Whenever it was, it seems everyone else woke up one day with social colourblindess and selective amnesia about history. Or so the likes of John Banks would have you believe. For context, Banks, during a recent stint on the radio, felt it completely appropriate to let a caller make obscene, patently racist comments about Maori and Maori culture unchecked and uncontradicted. And then he concurred. But when his behaviour was called out, as it should be, he
John Banks apologised on air for his comments on the Magic Talk Mornings programme, but denied he was racist. claimed not to be a racist. It seems nobody is racist anymore. Saying, doing or supporting racism no longer seems to qualify one as racist. Even if one’s comments or actions demonstrate at worst a deeply embedded hatred for a particular group (who are inevitably not white) or at best an inexcusable ignorance of reality in this day and age of easy access to information, one cannot be condemned as racist. Indeed, sometimes it feels as if calling someone racist is a greater offence than racism itself. Like you’ve needlessly caused a fuss by drawing attention to it. I am reminded of MLK’s speech about his disappointment in
white moderates, about one who “prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice”. It is this burden of the expectation on us to maintain a negative peace in order to avoid causing discomfort to moderate white people that emboldens someone like Banks to claim not to be racist even when he so clearly is. As if racist words carry the same weight as “good morning” and “looks like it might rain” and don’t serve to reinforce a cultural preservation of systemic inequality and injustice. Which in turn hurt real people and communities, for generations, in incredibly pervasive ways: from how they
access healthcare, education and employment, right down to how they move through this world and experience simply being. I do not expect any better from Banks and his ilk. And while it is heartening he was booted off the show, I wonder why on earth this exercise is still necessary. How many times a year do we endure this almost formulaic “faux pas” by an old white man in the media, followed by a half-assed apology and a tedious parade of excuses. Why do we keep giving these people a platform? Firstly, they don’t need the money. They made their money when houses cost $5 and university was free. Give someone else the job. God knows my generation need every opportunity we can get if we ever hope to own a home in New Zealand instead of a fort made of avocado pits glued together by our congealed tears over shattered dreams and climate apocalypse related anxiety. Secondly, who still wants to hear what they have to say? Is it still, in 2020, relevant? Is it interesting? Is it fresh? Is it adding any value to our national discourse? Or is it the same old garbage reheated to satiate the small handful of people left who “are not racist but…” To be clear, we are all racist. We all grew up in a world with social constructs that permeate every part of our consciousness, about race, gender, sexuality and so on. The thing that sets humanity apart from all other animals is our ability to subscribe to shared fic-
tions: religion, identity, economics, nationhood. Within these intersubjective realities we have constructed, we enjoy different levels of privilege depending on where we are situated in the relevant hierarchies. So while I’m a Muslim woman of colour and am often faced with Islamophobia and racism and misogyny in my life, I still have to tackle within myself and my community anti-blackness, homophobia, ableism etc. Arguably, under late capitalism, class is the most distinguishing source of privilege. And whether I am home in New Zealand with my family or working in Australia, I am on stolen land of settler colonies, and I must be cognizant of what that means and what role I play in perpetuating the ongoing impacts of that reality. In my striving to be a decent human being (and believe me, it’s a lifetime’s work that cannot and must not end), I am not absolved of this struggle. So why is Banks? Why is there no obligation for him and his friends to do better, to be better. It’s tiring, and boring. And it’s time we all move on. Stop giving him a microphone when all you will get is the intellectual equivalent of shrill feedback. Saziah Bashir is a freelance journalist commenting on issues of social justice, race and gender. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Think more often about what you have than what you don’t have, and with great affection at that. It’s a level of gratitude that few achieve. The ones who do are among the happiest people on earth. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Superior talent and true merit – that’s the magic success combination. If you can only have one, let it be merit. With work, the job is learned. Arguably, the real talent is a desire to work to be good. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The natural is more pleasing than the artificial and yet if everything existed in its natural state, what would creative people do? They need something to change, heighten and improve. Artifices can be marvellous! CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): While valour and respect for self and others are generally qualities of excellence, there is also a time and place for rebellion and mockery of corrupt systems. One tone doesn’t cover all times. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Maybe you’d rather have all the episodes of a television show available so that you are not waiting for the next airing. Love is different. There’s no way to bingewatch it. You’ll just have to wait. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You used to love the work, and now you’re not so sure, but it’s only because you’ve become so familiar. A rest, some time away or, better yet, a nice dose of competition, and then it’s back to true love. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): There are those who make gossip and drama out of absolutely anything. Happenings of the day will get more news than they deserve. You always have the option to direct your attention elsewhere. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Here you go, building a consensus. You’ll include others in the decision-making process. You’ll go out of your way to make sure that no one feels marginalised or ignored. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The problem shows up like a flare in the night, but won’t be nearly as dramatic to solve. Turning to the internet, a video tutorial or a book will be so much easier than turning to a real person. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Try not to take any news you hear as good news or bad. It is all neutral if you see it that way. Then you have the option to feel empowered to use this news to your greatest advantage. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’ll knock yourself out for love. Keep in mind: If you are working for the attention of the room, you’ve already lost. When you give what they need, you will have their full attention, no extra work necessary. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There are always more ways to observe a thing. The cat and spider see your domestic life differently than you. Channel them for a moment, and you’ll have a breakthrough.

Farm sales up at the end of 2020 Farm sales ended 2020 on a healthy note with a 15 per cent increase compared to the same time the previous year. Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) data shows 32 per cent more finishing farms and 26 per cent more dairy farms were sold in the three months ended December 2020 compared to the same time in 2019. Sales of grazing farms were down 9 per cent and 23 per cent fewer arable farms were sold. The median price per hectare was up $4000 to just over $27,000. Eleven of the 14 regions recorded an increase in farm sales, notably Waikato, which had 42 more sales, and Northland with a rise of 28. Otago, with seven fewer sales, was the only region to record a decline. REINZ rural spokesperson Brian Peacocke said the figures reflected strong confidence in the market. “Also the fact that over the last several years there has been a sinking lid applied from the trading banks, particularly the Australian-owned banks, and it appears that during this most recent spring that the pressure has eased, the banks are becoming
more involved again,” Peacocke said. That had influenced sales activity, he said. There had been fewer farms on the market and most of what had been for sale had sold, he said. “From a price perspective, we are still seeing downward pressure on dairy farm prices from the median price point of view.” Peacocke said sales were mainly to
existing owners. “It is generally farmers who are quite well situated from the point of equity, and therefore cash-flow, so there has been less consents for loans given to first farm buyers who might be constrained by the amount of capital they have got.” Peacocke said banks were still demanding strong levels of equity and cash-flow before they gave loans.
Onion exports kick off early after good growing season tic market,” Kuperus said. Of that 85 per cent, about 45 per cent goes to Europe and 20 per cent goes to Indonesia, he said. “The 20 per cent that goes to Indonesia is very important to our sector, so the success has been [that] we have been able to get harvesting early and start exporting to Indonesia.” Officials had helped the industry get quota sorted for New Zealand onions, Kuperus said.
Onion exports are off to an early and positive start this year. New Zealand is expected to export up to 175,000 tonnes of onions to 45 countries in 2021. Onions New Zealand chief executive James Kuperus said a good growing season had meant the harvest had been able to get under way quickly and early. “We export 85 per cent of them overseas and 15 per cent of them stay in New Zealand for the domes-
Shedding sheep hot under the hammer Bidding was competitive at the Mt Cass Station Wiltshire sheep sale in North Canterbury. Nearly 3500 sheep reached higher than expected prices at Sara and Andrew Heard’s farm and were sold to bidders from Kerikeri to Cromwell. Wiltshires shed their fleece annually, have a large lean carcase, no dags and naturally high fecundity. The Heards have been farming the breed for about 12 years because the hardy sheep do well on their 2500 hectare organic property, that spreads from the Waipara wine country to the coast. “It’s an easy solution running these sheep and the better they’re fed the better they shed. It’s just like running small cattle,” Andrew said. The recent on-farm sale attracted a large crowd of farmers wanting a commercially viable alternative to dual purpose coarse wool breeds. Kate Kellick and her family farm sheep and beef up the Mangamahu Valley in the Whanganui District. They’ve been farming Wiltshires for eight years. Kate’s aim was to pick up 200 Wiltshires at the sale, to replace the last of their woollen sheep. “Dad got into them for low inputs and less work and obviously because wool prices are no good, so there’s not much point in farming for wool any more, unfortunately.” Having a cautious approach, Kate went home emptyhanded, but says she’ll be back next year. One pen of 37 sheep sold for $395 a head. Despite being buoyed by a surge in interest in his wool-shedding sheep and high bids on the day, Andrew says moving away from woolly sheep has been a slightly bitter pill to swallow. “I’ve dealt with wool all my life, I was a wool classer and farmed fine sheep until we came here, and I find it depressing that prices are so poor.”
New Zealand onion growers planted about 6 per cent fewer onions than last year. That was down to global uncertainty, Kuperus said. “There was concern we would have been able to get onions onto ships or whether there was going to be strong ‘buy local’ campaigns in our export markets.” It was a conscious decision by growers to remove some of the risk and plant a little less, Kuperus said.

Road care and courtesy needed at harvest time
Former Black Stick Gemma McCaw will be a keynote speaker in Ashburton in April, one of three regional conferences being held by the Dairy Women’s Network. PHOTO SUPPLIED
Harvest season is in full swing and Federated Farmers is urging motorists and the operators of agricultural machinery to show each other some care and understanding. “Not everyone has appreciated the recent sweltering temperatures, but for arable farmers in the middle of harvesting, the golden weather is both a bonus and a race to get crops in before Mother Nature switches moods,” federation vice-president and transport spokesperson Karen Williams said. New Zealand’s $2.1 billion arable industry is an important part of our export earnings, economy and employment. During harvest, combine harvesters, large tractors towing implements and other over-size agricultural vehicles often need to use public roads to move between different parts of the farm. “They’re bulky and of necessity – and by law – move at lower speeds than other
motorists. “Farmers are asking other drivers to show a bit of patience and common sense,” Williams said. “If a tractor or harvester does pull over to the edge of the road, take your opportunity to pass if you can do so safely. Most of them will be moving no faster than 30-40km/h or so, so it’s not essential to have the same several hundred metres of clear road ahead needed when overtaking much faster moving vehicles.” Refusing to pass can result in a long line-up of vehicles and that’s when some drivers’ patience frays and they do something risky, Williams said. Federated Farmers is also urging the operators of farm vehicles to keep traffic flows in mind, and to remember their responsibilities in terms of protruding implements/headers and, where required, use of beacons and hazard panels.
McCaw to speak at Dairy Women’s event Ashburton will host one of three Dairy Women’s Network conferences in April featuring former Black Stick Gemma McCaw. Held in Taupo, Ashburton and Queenstown, each event will be packed with plenty of opportunities for growth under the theme of “step up together”, organisers say. Keynote speaker at each event is Gemma McCaw, three-time Olympian and wife of World Cup winning All Black captain Richie McCaw. “We’re excited to have Gemma share her journey with us as a well-known ambassador for women’s health and wellness,” conference chair Renee Fa’atui said. “Through her career she has gained knowledge into teamwork and resilience, and as a mum she’s learnt how to balance work, home and family – something many of our attendees are going through as well. We think Gemma’s story will resonate with a lot of dairy women.” As well as McCaw’s keynote sessions, each conference will feature workshops on the freshwater policy and investment and diversification. An additional interactive session is also planned, with topics based on the needs of the region. “Our regional conference chairs are working hard to lock in presenters who align with their regions and make sure each programme is personalised,” says
Fa’atui. “Farmers will hear from other farmers, but women will also hear from other women about their challenges and personal wins outside the farming journey.” The Ashburton conference will be on April 13 at the Hotel Ashburton, with North Canterbury contract milker Rebecca Green regional conference chair. The new format also sees the announcement of the Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year and the DWN Regional Leader of the Year awards move to a gala dinner on the evening of the Taupo event. Regional finalists will be recognised with drinks and canapes in Ashburton and Queenstown. “Our priority is really making sure that each region has a chance to celebrate their dairy women.” The decision was made to reinvent the traditional conference following the success of DWN2020 Conference Online, which showcased the resilience and the dedication to connection and learning within the farming community. “While we know our members appreciate the chance to get together, some women may struggle to get off the farm for a few days to travel to a national location. We see this new format as a great chance to try something else new, while meeting our members halfway and recognising that their needs may have changed in the past year.”

SMITH SETS BRANDON ALIGHT
There were many good scores in Saturday’s Hydraulink Brandon Open, but no-one got close to Josh Smith. Smith set the Ashburton Golf Club alight in the 36-hole tournament, which attracted a large and talented field, when he signed for a 69 on the first 18 before stepping out and delivering three shots better to card 66 for his second round. That put him eight shots clear of his nearest rival, Jeff Hewitt, who carded a 74 and then a 69 to finish second.
Terry Kingsbury, Jeremy Duckmanton, Blair Snowball and Robbie Bell (on a countback) filled the next spots while Nicola Webb claimed the women’s title with a strong second 18, where she shot 77, rocketing her into the top spot. The men’s senior title went to Erik Jorgensen with 142 for his two rounds, while Jeremy Small claimed the men’s junior title with a score of 145. METHVEN HARNESS
He’s got them covered By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Trying something new in racing circles is always a bit of a gamble, but the Methven Trotting Club guys would have sat back with a cold beer on Sunday night toasting a successful first running of the Little Green Jug. The three-year-old feature at their new meeting was hailed by all and sundry as a great success, with smart pacer Got You Covered taking the race out for driver John Dunn and his trainer, John’s father, Robert. The gelding is raced by Mid Canterbury’s Wendy Nordqvist, who also raced his full brother, Spot On. Driven patiently by Dunn, before looping the field in the mid stages, Got You Covered dug in best in a slick one-mile event on the grass to win comfortably from a fast-finishing Boora, with Corovalley Star finishing in third. The pacers stopped the clock at 1:57.4 for the one-mile journey, not far off the track record of 1.56.5 set by Ohoka Dallas when he won the Green Mile in 2011. Sunday’s meeting was a big day for John Dunn who drove three winners, including Puzzled, who was also trained by his father. The grey trotter is compiling an impressive record, and with good manners was too strong for an even field on Sunday. Dunn’s third winner came courtesy of Magicol Ideal, who won for Cam Jones. Sunday’s meeting was a massive social occasion with huge numbers flocking to the course to enjoy a day out in the sun. More than 550 converged for the Clubs of Canterbury Race Day underneath the big marquee, and they were treated to near-perfect conditions for grass track harness racing. A new meeting, handed to the club by Harness Racing New Zealand when the dates were set following the Covid-19 lockdown, the day looks set to become a permanent fixture on the calendar. Betting turnover for the meeting totalled more than $1.3 million with more than $100,000 being invested on course.

BOWLS
Consistency key to success By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Consistency, it’s a beautiful thing – especially in the sport of bowls. And it’s one of the key factors that led to Ashburton MSA Bowling Club players Linton Muir and Tony Inwood claiming the Ashburton Sub Centre Pairs on Saturday. The duo showed incredible consistency against tough combinations in the knockout stage of the competition at the Hampstead Bowling Club, to win the title over Methven’s Craig Carter and Rob Fensom in the final. But it was perhaps the match prior to that, which began their day, where they made their biggest statement. Up against the strong Allenton pairing of Graeme Bishop and Alex Crawford, Muir and Linwood played exceptional bowls to give their rivals little chance throughout the match. Inwood, who played lead, was solid throughout, while
Muir played some outstanding conversion bowls to grab points when needed, and limit the damage if things weren’t going their way. They walked off the green 18-11 winners over the Allenton pair, with the last end of the match not required to be played due to the score line. While Muir and Linwood had a relatively untroubled walk into the final, that was a far cry from the battle that Carter and Fensom had endured against Methven club mates, Aaron Allred and Jeff Nowell. In a see-sawing match that could have easily gone either way, the experienced duo were able to snare the match on the final of the 16 ends, after being locked at 14-all through 15 ends of play. That booked an evenly matched final, but again Inwood and Muir, through consistent play, got on top of Carter and Fensom and never looked back, running away as comfortable winners of the match 15-7 to claim the sub centre title. Linton Muir was in outstanding form on Saturday, leading himself and Tony Inwood to success in the sub centre pairs. PHOTO JAIME PITT-MACKAY 300121-JPM-021
CYCLING
Morrison’s persistence pays off It has been 30 years in the making, and it came to fruition on Sunday when Don Morrison stood on the top step of the podium, having taken victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, 50km handicap event around the Rakaia block. Morrison’s victory saw him lift the John Cleary Memorial trophy. Morrison and his co-markers rode their race to perfection, finding the front and continuing to push on, fully aware that the large field of riders were hunting them down. The result was decided in a fourup sprint, with Morrison finding a little extra from a game Nigel Chatterton, who produced his best ride of the season to take second place. Mark Smitheram was in the thick of the finish to claim the third place spoils. Rachel Reid, rounding out her Coast to Coast preparation, took fourth place. The chasing bunch was led in by Grant McKenzie, with Ed Hobson taking sixth place. Scratch marker Larry Neal secured fastest time honours, riding the course in 71.09.
Co-markers Nigel Douglas and Tony Ward recorded second and third time respectively. The juniors and division 2 contested a 15km handicap event. Charlotte Neal made it a good day for Team Neal, riding strongly to take a wellearned win in the junior event. Tom Reid carried on his good form from the previous week digging deep to take second place. James Reid is also coming into some good form with a great ride to secure the final podium position. Sarah Gould took the fourth place spoils, with fifth place getter Ryan Gallagher securing fastest time honours, covering the distance in 32.07. Merv Grewar saw off all challengers to take the win in division 2. Brian Ellis and Kerry Clough filled the minor spots, with back marker Kenny Johnston claiming fastest time honours in the race. Next week the club will contest a 48km graded scratch event around the Wakanui Beach block.

Seven-for finishes the Stags By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
A merciless performance by one of Pleasant Point’s bowlers snuffed out the Stags in the South Canterbury 20/20 competition in Timaru on Sunday. After succumbing to the South Canterbury frontrunners in the 50 over format a day earlier, Technical were jilted in their run chase courtesy of a three over spell of carnage from captain Liam Beck. The all-rounder single-handedly ran through the Stags’ batting line up with 7-17, as the Stags disintegrated from 54/3 to be all out for 78 in the 18th over. Earlier in the day, Pleasant Point posted 126/6 off the back of an unbroken 61 run stand by George Franklin and Brad Tegelaars, who hauled the South Canterbury club to a creditable total after finding themselves at 65/6 and under the pump. The Stags may see it as a missed opportunity, frustrated at the death and unable to claim a wicket in the final seven overs of the innings. It was after bowler Richard Print took an impressive 4-8 from his four-over spell, the main catalyst behind a spate of wickets which fell in the middle of the innings. Set 127 for a place in the 20/20 decider, the Stags lost Jason Morrison in the opening over. Bevan Richan was next to go with the score at 18 as Des Kruger again was summoned for a recovery job. He hit 35 from 43, however Matt Tait was the only other batsman to notch double figures before Beck, the sixth bowler used in the innings, went on a bowling blitzkrieg as the Stags finished well short. Pleasant Point went on to beat Celtic by 63 runs in the final later that day. Right – Harry Jones runs in to bowl during the Stags’ preliminary semi final against Star last week. Leonards win battle of siblings By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
Ashleigh Leonard has returned to the Ashburton Trust Gala Cup mixed doubles winners’ stage, this time with younger brother Tyler. The siblings secured the silverware at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Friday evening, beating fellow brother-sister pairing Connor and Jade Brosnahan 4-2 4-1 in the finals. The four rivals were the only seeded entries of the seven teams in action on Friday, which saw the annual tourney played while the sun set.
Ashleigh (23) previously won the Gala Cup mixed doubles title three consecutive times as a teen, alongside father Pete, between 2011 and 2014. She indicated how special a win would be with brother Tyler when she spoke to the Guardian in the lead-up. Ironically, the team faced up to Pete in their first game. The siblings however put on a clinic against their “old man”, who was paired up with Lucy Ellis, winning 4-0 4-0. The Brosnahans had earned their spot in the big dance with a 4-0 5-4(3) victory over Ollie Bubb and Isabela Van Dooren,
followed by a 4-2 4-1 toppling of Jess Aldridge and Ryan Watt in the semi-finals. A couple of three set epics ensued on centre court. Leonard and Ellis came from behind to beat Maggie Crosby and Go Tamura 3-5 5-4 (4) 11-9 in the opening leg of games. Andrew Hunt and Emily Fahey were put through their paces throughout the evening. The duo were edged 1-4 4-0 8-10 by Aldrige and Watt, before knocking over Bubb and Van Dooren 2-4 4-2 10-7 later in proceedings. The Ashburton Trust Gala Cup singles and doubles events will be held March 6-7.

Hakkla heroics get Allenton home By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Allenton have made a strong start to the second round of Canterbury Country’s senior cricket competition with a powerful victory over Cheviot at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday. In their first fixture for the year after enjoying the bye in the opening round of the second half of the season, Allenton were in strong form, registering a 24-run victory courtesy of some strong individual efforts with the bat in hand. Asked to bat first by their rivals after losing the toss, Allenton were in quick trouble at 19-2. That brought Karmjeet Singh and Satwant Singh together at the crease and the pair went about resurrecting their innings with a 97-run third-wicket stand. Satwant fell first for 40 and then three balls later Karmjeet went as well for 42, but with the score at 118-4 with just over 10 overs remaining, the platform had been set for a big finish. It just needed someone to step up to the task. That person was Manpreet Hakkla.
He came in at No.6 and blasted a rapid-fire 70 off just 38 balls while wickets fell at the other end around him. Hakkla’s innings consisted of three fours and seven sixes as he tore apart the Cheviot bowling attack. At the end of the innings, Allenton had compiled 210-8 – a more than competitive score. But they’d been in that position before and let themselves down with the ball so getting wickets quickly was always going to be the modus operandi when they walked out on to the field. It didn’t happen probably as quickly as they would have liked, but after a nine-over stint without a wicket they fell frequently enough after that. At 129-5 with 14 overs remaining, Cheviot probably felt like they were right in the hunt, but Allenton piled on the pressure in the closing overs and were able to restrict their visitors to 186-9 from their 40 overs to grab the victory. Hakkla continued his good day with two wickets from his eight overs while Mana Singh and Sanjay Undre Singh also picked up braces with wickets shared among six of the eight bowlers used.

The locals made the most of home ground advantage at the Methven Golf Course on the weekend to take out honours in the annual High Country Classic. The two-day tournament, which usually is split between the Methven course and nearby Terrace Downs, was restricted to just Methven for both days this year due the Terrace Downs course still not being open for play. At the end of the two days of play it was Alister Maxwell and Craig Middleton who took overall honours, winning the event for the third time. But it was close; they prevailed by one point from defending champions, Graeme Smith and Dusty Lock, who were also chasing down their third win in the popular tournament. With near-perfect conditions, if not a little bit on the warm side, there were good scores across both days of play, especially on Saturday where competition scores were a lot lower than normal. After the first round Neil Gubby and Greg Snelling had their noses in front, but they couldn’t stave off the challenges on Sunday. Third placing went to long-time supporters of the tournament from the Pegasus Club, north of Christchurch, Ingrid Candenhead and Mike Godinet with five teams tying for fourth just two points back. All counted 90 players from 16 clubs took part in the tournament with organisers confirming it was the largest number of players for many years. On the individual side of things, Snelling finished on top with 39 points on Saturday while on Sunday Richard Dwyer handed in a card with an impressive 41 points on it, while Tim Morgan, Murray McLeod and Steve Challenger were only one point back.

Ashburton Ladies
Just a quick note this week, as we are holidaying on the wonderful West Coast. A strong field took to the Brandon last Saturday playing in the Hydraulink 36 hole Open. A wee bit of drizzle in the morning did not deter anyone, which was helped by the course being in absolutely magnificent condition. Josh Smith led the way in the morning round with a 69 followed by Jeremy Duckmanton on level par 72. Josh then put his foot down in the afternoon with a great 66 to take out the title for the third time in a row. Jeff Hewitt had a strong 69 in the afternoon to take the runners-up spot. Nichola Webb won the ladies section again with a very strong showing. Erik Jorgensen took out the senior nett and Jeremy Small got the junior nett. Another great tournament, thanks to everyone involved, especially Dan and Abby Bruce at Hydraulink for their great sponsorship. In the 18-hole stableford round Stewey Bennett took out the top prize followed by a gaggle of others, mainly morning players again. Those boys get an easy ride! Attention this weekend turns to the Blacklow Trophy on Saturday and the Vauxhall Salver on Monday. CLUB NEWS 29 concerted effort to recruit new members and welcome inquiries from anyone interested in joining the group for fun and fellowship. Lion Milner and Jan Jacob were tail twisters for the evening, and had found some notable actions of members that were worthy of extracting fines. Entertainment commenced with President Jim calling for a Toast to Robbie Burns. 2nd VP Lion Jim Young compered the programme which included Singers President Jim, Diane Young, Peter O’Neill, Les and Sheilagh Briggs accompanied by guest pianist Judy McKeown. Members enjoyed a sing-along with a good selection of Scottish songs interspersed with solos. Marion Martin read a Burns poem. Lion Noel Lowe presented the tribute to Burns by relating a history of his life. An interesting life filling his short 37 years with many notable occasions but mostly more known for his written words. Lion Jim concluded the entertainment by giving us the story of his own Scottish Heritage. He has a place in the family tree of a pioneering and wellknown farming family of Mid Canterbury. A surprising story of great interest to many. The evening concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
Mid Canterbury Provincial Rural Women
As we slip from January into February of the New Year, we slip into the harvest season for agricultural farmers and the occurrence of more seasonal stock sales and auctions. With this comes the increase in the number of agricultural machinery and large trucks, all part of our rural districts calendar of life. As motorists, we need to make sure we stay calm and patient, as many of these different types of machinery and equipment, don’t travel at the same speed as us. Just as school buses return to the roads, after the school summer break. Remember it is a Road Rule to slow to 20km while passing a stationary school bus whether it is on either side of the road on which we are travelling. Caution and care are required, as our precious rural school children are vulnerable getting on and off a school bus, especially those new to the area and new to the bus system. Remember the jingle “Either way it’s 20k” whenever you see a stationary school bus and slow down to 20k. It may just save a child’s life and save you some avoidable grief. The next Mid Canterbury Provincial RW meeting is on February 12th, at the Sinclair Centre, starting with a cuppa at 9.30am. Guest speaker from Hospice Mid Canterbury. If you require more info, please contact Marg Verrall 302-4717 or Sandra Curd 302-4754. tition for the Gordon Blacklow Memorial Trophy. TECH TOPPLED SCORECARD Technical 196 (46.1 overs) Des Kruger 90 Matthew Tait 19 Alex Hooper 17 Matt Brown 3-18 Brad Tegelaars 2-25 Cameron Lundie 2-30 Pleasant Point 197/4 (32.2 overs) Matt Brown 123 Adam Beck 28 Pleasant Point won by 6 wickets By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
Just too classy. Pleasant Point offered another refresher as to why they are oddson favourites in the South Canterbury senior competition. The side accounted for Technical by six wickets at the Ashburton Domain Oval on Saturday despite the best efforts with the bat from Des Kruger. The Stags struggled to build around the key batsman, with the home side kept to under 200 batting first. In reply, the South Cantabrians were carried by a belligerent ton from opening bat Matt Brown. His 123 from 98 balls ultimately
was the difference between the two teams. It was the sixth defeat for the Mid Canterbury club as they remain in fourth spot on the ladder. Pleasant Point have widened their lead at the top to 12 points over second placed Temuka. It was a tough old start for the Stags’ batsmen, after being sent in under ominous cloud cover. Openers Jason Morrison and Bevan Richan scratched around for two runs apiece before both were back in the shed by the 5th over – dismissed in consecutive deliveries. It was left to Harry Jones and Des Kruger to establish some solid footing for the home team. Jones was unable to get his innings going as he nicked through
to keeper Bailey Dryden to leave Tech at 26/3 at the 10-over mark. Kruger and Matt Tait put on 42 over the next 10, however just as the Stags were settling into a groove, Tait was run out for 19. Joined by Sam Bennett, Kruger took it upon himself to wrestle back some of the ascendancy as he dominated another promising partnership in the middle, taking the score past 100. Scoring boundaries at the Oval was also proving challenging on the listless outfield, probably not helped by overnight rain.
