The saints go marching in By Heather Mackenzie heather.m@theguardian.co.nz
The saints went marching in at St Joseph’s Catholic School on Wednesday. As a way of honouring All Saints Day, three students Clarence Bernarte, Noah Martinez and Tadhg Simpson from Cathy Reid’s Year 5
and 6 class, Kea 9, put their heads together and came up with the idea of a school saints parade. Once all the classes were marshalled in nice straight lines on the school courtyard, Clarence, Noah and Tadhg took turns at calling up each class who marched around to Oh When The Saints playing over the school PA system. Their teacher, Mrs Reid, said
the boys organised the whole thing themselves with next to no imput from her. She was proud of the boys for standing up in front of the whole school and speaking. “Public speaking is never easy and these guys are not school leaders, so they have done really well.” Parade finished, Noah thanked

the students for dressing up. “This is a way of thanking God for what he has done for us,” he said. School principal Cath Blacklow then took the floor, telling the children they had to all go back to class to learn reading, maths and writing, which was met with loud groans all round. “That’s enough frivolity for one day,” she said.

Ashburton’s red-hot housing market might be setting records for prices and speedy sales, but it’s also breaking records of another kind. For the past two months, the Ashburton District Council’s building team has processed a record number of Land Information Memoranda (LIMs) that are now part of the sale and purchase armour for every property deal. In October 114 reports were generated and that was topped by 134 produced in November. And while having all property information digitalised speeded up the process, building services manager Michael Wong told councillors at this week’s briefing meeting that the high demand was still putting pressure on the building department.
Building consent numbers were also on the rise and while some of that increase was a post-Covid catch-up, there was also an element of people now having the confidence to move forward with building plans, Wong said. “Things have gone crazy and there’s a lot of pressure coming on from people who’re wanting codes of compliance signed off before Christmas, but building suppliers are now having problems getting shipments in from overseas.” The district appeared to be in the middle of a mini-building boom, he said. For the first four months of this year 208 building consents were issued, slightly up on last year. The value of consents received in October hit a monthly high at $52.632 million, but this was boosted by the council’s own consent for its new civic centre and library build. This has yet to be issued.
A welcoming community The Ashburton District is being asked to show its true colours when it comes to welcoming newcomers. A large mural will be painted on an inner town wall next year that will spell out a graphic welcoming message and the shape of that message will be decided by the community. The district’s Welcoming Communities committee, is on the hunt for ideas. It wants to hear what the words welcome mean to people and how that word could be graphically demonstrated, advisor Janice McKay said. She’s hoping people will come up with a range of ideas that will then be put before a panel of experts who will make a short list. These will be given to several artists who will come up with concept designs.
The concepts will be put out to the community with the one gaining the most support to be painted on an inner town wall. The project is designed to help newcomers feel more accepted in their new home and to encourage connections between locals and newcomers. It is also about making the CBD a more vibrant and interesting place. Deputy Mayor Liz McMillan says that as the town centre streetscape upgrades continue to take shape, the mural is a great opportunity for people to play a part in making the CBD a more vibrant and welcoming place and a way for locals to leave a creative mark on the town of the future. The mural is being fully funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Santa Claus is coming to town By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Christmas will arrive in town on Saturday and it will arrive with all the pomp and ceremony of a fullon Santa parade. The town’s Mother Christmas, Carol Johns, is working her magic to create a Christmas parade that will break all records, and judging by the response of people wanting to take part, she could be right on target. When you’re passionate about getting into the spirit of Christmas, organising Ashburton’s Santa parade is more fun than hard work, Johns said. But she has been putting in hours of work behind the scenes to ensure the parade is an absolute crowd pleaser. There will be all the highlights of the past with plenty of new attractions thrown into the mix, she said. Perhaps the biggest difference with this year’s parade will be the route, Johns said. “There’ll be no doubling back along East Street, instead the parade will start at Mona Square, travel up East Street, move down Havelock and travel back to the square along Cass Street.” The changed route is as much about safety as it is about providing better viewing opportunities for the community – less crowding and a chance to head down a side street to catch the procession on its return journey to Mona

Square, she said. This year’s parade will include a new challenge, one for families. A $500 prize is up for grabs for the family creating the best parade entry. Johns has also come up with a new parade entry of her own,
sourcing and then restoring an old Kiddy Train that has been turned into the Candy Train. It’s been carpeted, had safety rails and car seats installed and it will be doing duty as a star attraction in this year’s parade.
The main event of course will be Santa, who will arrive accompanied by elves and fairies who will blow bubbles into the crowd. With Christchurch’s Christmas parade cancelled and growing interest in the Ashburton event
on Facebook, Johns is anticipating this year’s crowd is likely to be boosted by out-of-town families. The parade will start at 12.30, and will be led by Christmas characters handing out potato chips and sweets.

Citizens’ Advice Bureau open for business By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
With the opening of Ashburton’s Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Mid Canterbury now has a one-stop shop for information about virtually every event, activity or issue, and it joins a network that runs across 80 locations around New Zealand. The CAB can be accessed by phone or face to face and volunteers have access to a database of both local and national information The information available will be wide ranging, from contacts for clubs and activities to where to go to for advice on work or relationship issues. In opening the Community House-based office, New Zealand CAB chief executive Kerry Dalton said it was a cause for celebration that the office had opened within a year, particularly a far from normal year. “There was a vision and a commitment to ensure the people of Ashburton were supported by good quality information that was free,” she said. To ensure Ashburton’s office could open while it was still building up its team of trained volunteers, it would run under the umbrella of the national organisation. Once this recruitment and training process is completed it will become a stand-alone unit with its own board. “This is the first time in more than 20 years a community has set up a CAB as a community initiative and that’s come from perceiv-
ing there is a gap in accessing information. This service will fill that gap,” Dalton said. If the service was unable to provide specific information, volunteers would know who to connect a client with to ensure they found the answers they were seeking. “If people want information, they need to think CAB, and because it’s volunteer based you have that local connection, they’re your people from your community.” People looking for information outside Ashburton’s CAB hours could call (03) 9288761 and because the organisation’s database was nationwide, Mid Canterbury information would be provided, Dalton said. Ashburton was an example of the spirit of CAB in having highly trained volunteers who were committed to giving their time to help others in their community, she said Ashburton’s CAB is based in the foyer of Community House and it was a welcome addition to the growing network of community organisations, manager John Driscoll said. “This reinforces this place a community hub for Ashburton. This idea was raised 18 years ago – things take a long time to happen,” he said. The community trust board was 100 per cent behind the CAB, Driscoll said. Citizens Advice Bureau have been established in New Zealand for 50 years and offer advice and referral for consumers, employers, business people, on legal issues, health, housing as well as providing contacts for thousands of community clubs, groups and organisations.

Presbyterian Support plays a significant role in providing financial advice and assistance to individuals and families around the Ashburton District, but providing that support would not be possible without the generosity of community funders, Mid Canterbury manager Suz Hutchinson says. The organisation’s budget service has been running since 2014 and over the past 12 months provided advice and support to more than 200 individuals and families. The ability to do that, however, relied on community funders such as Advance Ashburton, Hutchinson said. “Funding from the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation has ensured Presbyterian Support continues to offer a much-needed budget service for the local community.” There were many reasons why people sought financial and budgetary support

including increasing living costs, loss of income, work instability, relationship breakdowns, health issues and credit and loan problems, Hutchinson said. “People of all ages and backgrounds require our service. We employ two fully trained budget mentors who will spend time with our clients, understanding their individual needs and putting in place plans that will help them manage their money.” The service has also expanded with the establishment of an on-site link with the Hakatere Marae, with the view of providing outreach budget support and group workshops and extra social work support hours has been allocated to support clients and the budget mentors, she said. Without the support of Advance Ashburton, however, Presbyterian Support could not continue to provide what was a valuable and much needed service, she said.

Signing on to become public property I
t’s clear that winning a seat around a council table is not the end of a journey, it’s only the beginning. If you’ve done your homework you know about the schedule of meetings you’ll be committed to, but what you might not know is the raft of other events that will quickly start to clog your calendar. And that’s not just for a mayor – all councillors if they’re worth their salt as community representatives will field constant requests to open events, speak at gatherings, attend functions, all of those making inroads into their personal time. Take just Wednesday this week. The district’s Citizens’ Advice Bureau opened and several of the team were there. That done, they headed to the annual morning tea for residents living in the council’s elderly housing units. And for some that wouldn’t be the end of a ‘normal’ non-meeting day as the Youth Council was due to meet
By Sue Newman FROM THE PRESS BENCH that afternoon with several councillors involved. And if councillors think they’re busy, take a look at mayor Neil Brown’s schedule. He admits there are weeks when he rarely gets to put his feet under his own dining table, weeks when his car spends more time on the road than in the garage. Of course behind every good man there is an even better woman and for Brown, that woman is wife Judy. In what is probably only one of dozens of incidents where she’s been called on to go above and beyond was one last week where Brown was juggling several in town, out of town and overnight
events over a couple of days. He left home with his bag in hand for an overnight trip, but left the most important piece of equipment behind – his briefcase. Judy to the rescue and a fast trip for a roadside rendezvous to ensure he arrived at his next job as the complete package. The job of a mayor is hers almost as much as it’s Neil’s. Each month there’s a rundown of what mayor Brown has been up to for the month included in the council agenda. It makes exhausting reading. That diary doesn’t tell the whole story for either himself or his councillors. They, are effectively, on duty 24/7. Even if they’re sitting at home, glass of wine in hand, they’re community property. And if they have family at home, a spouse or kids, then the job is also theirs. From the outside it might seem they earn their money easily. Not so. It’s basically 24 hours on call.
Construction is set to begin at the site of the new NPD Rakaia service station.
NPD set to open in Rakaia in 2021 By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
Rakaia will no longer be a one petrol stop town with the construction of a new fuel service station getting under way. Nelson Petroleum Distributors (NPD) is building a new 24-hour self-service station on the corner of Bridge Street (State Highway 1) and Fergusson Street. NPD chief executive Barry Sheridan said he was aiming to have NPD Rakaia open in March 2021. “This large site will consist of four islands that will allow for up to 16 vehicles to be filling at one time, including a dedicated heavy transport option,” Sheridan said. “Stage one of our Rakaia NPD development will be a premium self-serve site and with the option to add a retail
store in the future.” Rakaia previously had two service stations. The Burrowes family has operated the Rakaia Mobil since 1994, redeveloping the site in 2004, and manager Tyrone Burrowes said there was also previously fuel pumps further up State Highway 1 at Chapman’s Garage, but they were removed in the early 2000s. After almost 20 years as the sole fuel operators in town, a new player is moving in almost next door. “Competition is a good thing,” Burrowes said. NPD will be around 200 metres further south, but will have no access directly off the SH1, with two entranceways on Fergusson Street which will be widened to accommodate the increased traffic flow. The consent application was non-notified as the council said the “adverse ef-
fects are deemed to be less than minor and the persons considered affected by the proposal have given their consent”. According to the consent documents, the site was occupied by Rakaia Engineering Ltd (REL) before NPD purchased the development area from REL, sought and obtained the subdivision consent, and sold the remainder the site back to the engineering company. Over the past few years, NPD has systematically expanded its network throughout the South Island including a site in the Ashburton Business Estate. NPD now has over 75 sites in the South Island, with more being added including Rakaia, and the family-owned fuel retailer is also now expanding into the North Island. Construction is under way in New Plymouth and Hamilton, with both sites expected to be completed by late March 2021 and a further four sites to follow.

Coming together through volunteering By Heather Mackenzie heather.m@theguardian.co.nz
International Volunteers’ Day is on Saturday and this year’s theme is –Together we can through volunteering. On the local stage Mid and South Canterbury Volunteering co-ordinator Dellwyn Moylan said due to the day falling on a weekend they have shifted celebrations to next week. Moylan said 17 different organisations and their volunteers have been invited to join in the fun at Community House on Monday morning. “We know it is a busy time of year for our financial members, so by us organising this thank you event it takes the pressure off them.” Breaking away from the international theme, Moylan said their celebration theme has more of a local twist. “I have named it ‘Thank moo for being udderly mooverlous volunteers’.” In keeping with the dairy rhetoric Moylan said there will be ice-cream and chocolate cows on offer, as well as crafting using milk bottle tops and icecream lids. Thanks to Covid-19 volunteering took on quite a different feel in 2020. “This year especially, volunteers need extra thanks for adapting how they volunteered.” Even under level four lockdown Moylan said she had around 30 people contact her offering to help out whereever needed. International Volunteers’ Day was mandated by the UN General assembly in 1985 as a way of promoting volunteering and encouraging governments to support and recognise the valuable contributions volunteers make at local, national and international levels. Their role during the Covid-19 pandemic has been recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO). UN Volunteers website states that the WHO has identified community volunteers as key stakeholders in risk communication and community engagement. They went on to say, this commitment in the face of the pandemic indicates the value and great effort the WHO believes volunteers are doing during Covid-19.

Forecasters are predicting a typically dry summer for Canterbury under moderate La Niña conditions. Canterbury Weather Updates analyst Russell Voice said the summer looked set to be a typical Canterbury summer with a high frequency of dry and warm conditions. After an active start to December things will settle down towards the festive season. “From the middle stages of December there is an indication of high pressure influence,” Voice said. “Expect less wind, lots of sun, and above average temperatures, especially inland areas. “Towards the end of the month there is potential for some rain, but it’s low risk at this stage. “If we don’t see that rain eventuate it will be quite a dry month.” While not nailing down a Christmas Day forecast, Voice said early indications were for a “fairly frequent Canterbury summer day”. From December to February, air pressure is forecast to be higher than normal over the southeast of the South Island. January was set to be “some really ideal holiday weather”. “Some great camping or recreational weather as it’s looking fairly good everywhere. “It looks like really warm temperatures and a lot of fine days, especially in the inland areas. In terms of rainfall, January looked to be below average and into February it all looked similar, Voice said. “There is nothing to indicate we are heading towards a drought.” Longer range forecasting was always a tricky business, with rogue systems able to blow in and deliver rainfall.

OUR VIEW
Time for the New Year street party to return? By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
A
t the end of December most people are champing at the bit to get out of the Ashburton District and get away somewhere to help see the New Year in. But what if there was something worth sticking around for? A reason to stay at home, a celebration with fellow locals without the expense or hassle of throwing everything bar the kitchen sink into the car to get away. The annual Ashburton New Year’s Eve Street Party used to be a great event and was really well attended by locals and even those from further afar for many years. But, like most things, the struggles of running and maintaining an event of that nature took its toll and it was removed from the calendar. Earlier this week we put a flashback photo up from one of the nights many years ago, and it attracted a heap of attention. It brought back many great memories for a lot of people and also saw a lot of disappointment that nothing like this is held in these parts anymore. It’s understandable that it was a bit of a problem child for the authorities with a few naughties often appearing and causing a bit of trouble, but that aside it was a really successful night and it gave locals the chance to come together for a bit of fun to send off the year. So, what would it take to get it back? There are many hoops that need to be jumped through these days with health and safety of course, but with a really strong group of people at the helm, surely it could happen. Maybe it’s too late for 2020, but how good would it be to know that at the end of 2021, when we’re going to be really close to having a flash, new-looking central business district that we could gather together to send off the year and welcome in a new one? It just needs someone, or something to take the bull by the horns and make it happen. Surely there’s someone out there.
YOUR VIEW Foreign workers In the Ashburton Guardian last Friday (November 22, 2020) your cartoonist depicted a “bad apple” spoiling a basket of apples, and implied that “bad apple” was a limited number of Pacific Island employees available under the Registered Seasonal Employer scheme to harvest the crop. However, when Kiwis began milking cows, growing crops, and harvesting fruits, we did not rely upon overseas workers
to harvest the produce, and it is wrong for employers to continue to now say we need cheap foreign “guest workers” to harvest their produce. Employers need to have appropriate employment conditions, and properly pay their workers so they have no need to rely upon foreign slaves. Jonathan Everist

Praying to the weather gods
A
re there more nor’westerlies this year than before? Perhaps it’s just my anxiety levels are increased this year. Either way they can bugger off any time soon. I have talked the family, and when I say family, I mean the inlaws, into moving our camping site this year. When I say talked them into it, I actually mean they gave into my sulking. It’s only a 70 metre move, but it’s a biggy! The move means we will get all the afternoon and evening sunshine, BUT we are now exposed to the nor’west wind. “The nor’westerlies are normally all finished by Christmas time” I have boldly (maybe foolishly) said. Here we are three weeks away from Chrissy, and it blew its you know what off on Wednesday afternoon and night. Hopefully our awning is still attached to the caravan! I can’t remember one nor’wester during the two weeks we stayed at Rangi over Christmas last year, but I do remember sitting in the shade with jacket on because the easterly from the sea was nagging away at us. What made that scenario even

worse was tourists pulling up, 70 metres away (where we have moved to now) and sunbathing, with the hedge behind them offering protection from the cold easterly.
in the sunshine at the end of the day. Likewise, the father-in-law is only allowed to give me the full teapot and “Told you so” ONCE if and probably when we get hit by the nor’west. The way I look at things is, you can always make yourself some shade but you can’t make yourself some sunshine. Big picture though, it doesn’t matter to me what the weather does, it’s just great to get away
My darling wife has stipulated that I’m only allowed to mention ONCE how good it is to be sitting in the sunshine at the end of the day. Perhaps I don’t remember the Nor’wester because we had a hedge at our backs protecting us. My darling wife has stipulated that I’m only allowed to mention ONCE how good it is to be sitting
from it all for a couple of weeks. I’m sure the rest of the family feel exactly the same. Bugger all cellphone coverage means very little distraction from work. As I have mentioned plenty of
times before it’s a great opportunity to recharge the batteries, especially after a challenging year like the one we have all had. It will be nice for Maddy to have a few weeks away from preschool too. Her preschool is awesome, and she loves going there, but she’s had one of those years where she has picked up every single bug going around. And yes, we know it’s all part of building her immunity, but you can’t help feeling sorry for the wee mite when she recovers from a tummy bug and before you know it, she’s spending half the night coughing. I’m sure the fresh Rangitata air (including the nor’westerly) will do her wonders. If not, we will just keep following Nana’s advice and give her honey for the cough. To back up what Nana said, I found this wee gem yesterday. When you were a kid, were you told that a spoonful of honey (whether served in tea or on just on the spoon . . .) would sooth a cough? And does Grandma’s old trick work? Well, yes! Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins Centre for Health Security, says that while honey isn’t a cure
for a cough, it can decrease its intensity. A study showed that children given a tablespoon of honey before bedtime to help with cough symptoms got as much, or more, relief than they did when given dextromethorphan (a common ingredient in cough medicines). And several studies have shown that honey can bring the intensity level of coughing fits way down by reducing airway inflammation in the lungs, and it might also break up mucus, and relieve irritation of the mucus membranes in your mouth. The only problem is that my Grandma also told me to have a thimble-full of whiskey with the honey. I’ll happily look after that side of things! I’m off to do my ‘settled weather’ dance, so until next week. Hoo Roo Phill Hooper A bit sulky Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. Producing award winning food for their residents By Heather Mackenzie heather.m@theguardian.co.nz
I
t’s all smiles and awarding winning food at the Terrace View Retirement Village. Vying for the Bidfood Excellence in Food Award, given out annually to New Zealand Age Care Association (NZACA) members, facility manager Donna Coxshall knew the national competition been whittled down to one other rest home or hospital and them. “I went to the NZACA conference in November not knowing who had won, so when they announced it was us I was over the moon,” Coxshall said. Coxshall stressed the award belonged all the staff at the facility. The judges put everybody under the spotlight, she said. “They looked at all parts of the meal process, meal preparation to presentation were important, but they even went so far as to eat with the residents so they could see how the meals are delivered and to make sure residents were given ample time to finish their meal.” Winning this award is doubly sweet for Coxshall as she had made it her personal goal to improve the food quality and to upskill the kitchen staff. Up until May of this year Coxshall ad-
Our food is now fresher and with greater variety. It’s so good our residents are putting on weight. mits their food was okay, but it lacked polish, and wasn’t quite meeting the needs of some of their frailer residents. “These days there are so many different dietary requirements and cultural differences and we have to be able to meet them all.” Knowing a change was needed, but not sure exactly how to do it, Coxshall recalled conversation she had with Cater Plus representatives at a previous NZACA conference. “I wanted a company we could contract our catering to, but one that would also work with our existing staff, as I didn’t want anybody to lose their jobs.” Coxshall found Auckland based Cater Plus met her criteria perfectly.
While they leave the actual hands-on cooking to the original kitchen staff, Coxshall said the company’s training, support and commitment to Terrace View is exactly what they were looking for in a contractor. “Their head chef designed a summer and winter menu especially for us and he attends each monthly management meeting.” Coxshall knows the Terrace View kitchen workers are invisible heros. Get the food right and everything else tends to fall into place, she said. “Our food is now fresher and with greater variety. It’s so good our residents are putting on weight.” Fussy eaters and special diets are now easily catered for thanks to the kitchen staff brandishing a new set of culinary skills. “As long as we have plenty of notice we can now make something to replace any menu items they don’t like.” Terrace View head cook Stephanie Woods is also loving the new arrangement. Woods and her staff are not only receiving ongoing training from a fully qualified chef, but now wear professional uniforms and that makes a big difference to how they feel about their job, she said. “We are all learning so much now, it’s
just great,” Woods said. Coxshall’s pride in accepting the award on behalf of Terrace View is evident. “When I first put our name forward I wasn’t sure our privately owned facility could foot it with the big guys, but it turns out we can,” Coxshall said.

Go online to choose your new model
umbers just received have confirmed the success of MINI Australia and New Zealand’s interactive and intuitive online sales experience that went live earlier this year. The online tool since launch has recorded 81 orders worth more than $5 million in sales across both countries, a result that indicates both the seamlessness of its functionality and the clear shift occurring in customers’ perceptions of online car sales. The revolution was fuelled by exciting new models from the socially-mindful
British brand, including the MINI Countryman Stafford Edition, MINI Nightfall Edition, MINI Rosewood Edition and the all-new, highly-successful MINI Electric Hatch. New car launches in 2020 took on a vastly different shape and form as the global Covid-19 pandemic resulted in numerous travel restrictions everywhere in the world. To continue offering MINI fans an elevated sales experience, MINI Australia and New Zealand introduced the online deposit mechanism for MINI fans to express interest in new models without
leaving the comfort and safety of their homes. MINI fans that went online simply had to choose their favourite model and specification, put a small deposit down via an online merchant, and indicate their preferred dealership for payment completion and payment. The experience was available 24/7 and took as little as 10 minutes to complete. Better still, if customers experienced a sudden change in circumstances, the deposit could be fully refunded. On the success of the new models, Brett Waudby, General Manager for MINI
Australia and New Zealand said, “Just as the original Mini paved the way for compact, fuel-efficient and fun cars amid a global oil crisis in the 1960s, MINI’s latest online sales model shows we are sensitive to the times, adapting the way we interact with our customers quickly while also not removing any of that great MINI character.” Alongside the online sales process, MINI also launched #TheMINIthings social campaign, to encourage those despondent with all the lockdown restrictions to appreciate the little things in life.

SKODA KAMIQ AMBITION+
Versatile, and satisfying! By Roger Hart
A
ROAD TEST
MOTORING SERVICES
mong the ‘Simply Clever’ standard gear in the comprehensive Skoda NZ range are- an umbrella that slides into a special compartment in the driver’s door, an ice-scraper under the fuel tank flap and a detachable light for the luggage space that can then be used as a torch. So, on rainy days in the near future, those receiving a ticket may well have this handed over by a Police officer whilst he or she shelters under a Skoda umbrella! That could happen as soon, as the Superb, the top model of the Skoda range enters service as the chosen gradual replacement for the current Holden Police fleet. But it’s not the Superb that features today but the Kamiq, which is the latest addition to the Czech produced Skoda SUV/crossover line-up. It joins the medium-sized Karoq and larger Kodiaq. It’s a timely arrival, for the market for these smaller SUVs, in which the number of models available keeps multiplying, is very busy. For they’re versatile and just what many want for taking the kids to school, for work and then to do weekend stuff. As well people like their elevated driving positions and feel safer. Then others also want something that has more-than-adequate performance and can also provide suitable driving enjoyment on longer drives. So there’s two different engines in the three model Kamiq range. The Ambition ($30,990) gets a one litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine producing 85kW and 200Nm from 20003500rpm. Then both this $36,990 Ambition+, as well as the top of the range Monte Carlo ($42,990) have a more powerful four cylinder, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol. It delivers 110kW and 250Nm of torque right through from 1500 to 3500rpm, which is right where it’s needed for easy about town driving, then quick open road overtaking. All three have proactive, seven-speed,
twin-clutch autos, and are front-wheeldrive. Shifting the gear lever across into Sport mode sees the transmission hold on to the lower gears longer, resulting in a stated 0-100km/h in 8.4 seconds. As well the engine has the ability to deactivate two of its cylinders when cruising. This occurs seamlessly and you only know its happened by seeing a screen message. The result is that while the claimed overall fuel use is 5.8L/100km, it often dips below this. They’ve restrained but smart-looking styling with the signature upright grille, trendy narrow LED lights, roof rails and smart alloys, all of which means they sit proudly in the car-park! The Kamiqs share their MQB platform with many of the other VW Group models including the Audi Q2/Q3 and VW T-Cross. That means they ride and handle very nicely with suitable comfort, absorb-
ing most road imperfections very well, and do this without interfering with handling or its reactions when the driver wishes enjoy tighter corners. The Monte Carlo however has even sportier dynamics, with adaptive suspension with ‘normal’ and ‘sport’ settings. This is one of the many options available for the two Ambition versions. There’s also adaptive cruise at $900, touch screen sat-nav $2600 and more (all of which the Monte Carlo has, and more, as standard fare). There’s keyless entry to the neatly organised cabin, which is a case of a function rather than form, with its analogue gauges with a small digital screen between them and a nicely presented infotainment system, together with dual zone climate-air. They are alls easy to see and use, particularly so the cruise controls on the indicator lever. This would be even better with the optional adaptive cruise! Both front seats are easy to get in and
out of and therein there’s space, comfort and adjustability. No internal heating though. The rear seat will hold three standard size adults, but two are of course best. The luggage space is 400 litres with seats up, or 1395 litres with them folded. As well there’s a real spare wheel below.
FINALE I’ve in previous stories, commented on the crowded small /compact SUV/Crossover market. The variety of – and quality too – of the vehicles therein of which just keeps ever increasing. And is now such that should prospective buyers find it difficult in reaching a decision as to which one best suits their needs, desires, and budget, they are certainly not alone! Then because of the Kamiq’s clever mix of neat exterior size, space, very easy to drive nature, nimble handling and satisfying performance, it very deservedly is one of the ten finalists for the 2020 NZ Car of the Year title!

The electric single-seater features a new powertrain developed in-house, which will run for the next two seasons. Jaguar Racing engineers have focused on efficiency gains, reduced weight and lowered the centre of gravity of the I-TYPE 5’s powertrain. New suspension will provide greater adjustment from track to track and a more efficient invertor will improve switching speeds and performance. The state-of-the-art invertor also

hannons Covid-19 response of timed online auctions is going from strength to strength, with the Spring Sale last week delivering a $6.4 million outcome, with 95 per cent of all 175 lots sold. A highlight of the online sale was the $272,400 result achieved by the six very rare early motorcycles in the Victorian Warren Hicks Collection, all offered with ‘no reserve’ and in project condition. The absolute standout was a c1906 Zenith Bi-Car motorcycle (right), a true survivor offered in ‘barn find’ condition. Not seen since 1974, it was pursued by a number of enthusiasts before doubling its pre-sale estimate to sell for $100,500. Also appealing to serious collectors was a 1914 American Excelsior with a 1000cc V-Twin engine and a world-first two-speed motorcycle gearbox with its left handlebar grip operating its clutch. Although it hasn’t
run since 1978, it brought a juicy $40,700. Amongst the cars, the auction’s top price was $425,000 paid for a concours-standard 1971 Ferrari 365 GTC/4 Coupe; $196,000 was invested in a 1977 LX Torana SL/R 5000 9X Sedan, $133,001 was paid for a restored Ford Capri RS3100 after prolonged bidding, and an immaculate 1987 Nissan Skyline GTS-R HR31 sold for $80,000. Amongst the ‘project’ vehicles that required further work, the standout was a very desirable and complete 1972 BMW 3.0 CS coupe, which soared by $30,000 in the auction’s final minutes to sell for $71,500; an unprecedented $59,000 was paid after strong bidding for a 1971 Holden HQ Monaro LS Coupe in need of a restoration. Equally notable were the prices paid for fully-restored classic cars, including$61,500 paid for an exceptional Series 1 Land Rover; $60,000 given for a beautiful 1970 Mini Cooper S 1275cc Mk II.
Above – This Ferrari 365 CTC/4 Coupe fetched a very nice $425,000. Below – Got one in the barn? Someone paid $59,000 for this ‘needs-work’ 71 HQ Monaro. Bottom left – Fully-restored 74 Capri RS3100, under the hammer for $133,001. Bottom right – A superb Chrysler VH Charger E38 sold for $150,500. Centre left – The Zenith Bi-Car went for a whopping $100,500.

RUGBY
Dallas back for another Crusaders season By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
A handful of fresh faces have been named in the Crusaders squad for next year’s Super Rugby competition. Head coach Scott Robertson revealed his 38-man squad for the 2021 campaign yesterday, which includes four uncapped players all of which have progressed through the Crusaders academy. The group also includes Methven’s Dallas McLeod, who has again been named after debuting for the franchise this year. The 21-year-old utility back played two games for the Crusaders during the pre-Covid Super Rugby competition. Chay Fihaki, Fletcher Newell, Isaiah Punivai and Tamaiti Williams are the new names in Robertson’s squad. The quartet who joined the Academy last year were all part of the Canterbury under-19 outfit which clinched the Jock Hobbs Memorial National under-19 Tournament. Returning to lead the side will be Scott Barrett, after the All Blacks lock was sidelined during Super Rugby Aotearoa with a foot injury. He’ll assemble with the other Crusaders’ All Blacks in early February, while the bulk of the squad will assemble on January 11. The Crusaders’ first pre-season game is against the Highlanders in Temuka on February 12, before the team open their 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa campaign against the Highlanders in Dunedin on February 26.

The Ashburton and Geraldine Swimming Clubs joined forces at the weekend for the Ashburton/ Geraldine Splash meet at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre. Swimming Canterbury combined both club events following the cancellation of meets during the Covid lockdown. More than 300 participants were in action for the first open event since lockdown. Ashburton Swim Team Committee president Anne Tait was delighted with how the two days went. “It was so good to finally see a large number back competing together again.” Tineke Artz (left) was one of many in action at the weekend. Cricket’s on; anyone watching? By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

ew Zealand Cricket may have felt they were onto a winner when they inked a deal with streaming service, Spark Sport – but the seemingly evident lack of interest in the current international cricket window would perhaps suggest they were off the mark. If you missed it, New Zealand played a couple of T20 matches on the weekend against the visiting West Indies side – the third was rained out. With no Sky Sport coverage of the matches though, many New Zealanders have shown little interest.

Friday night was OK. It was played on free-to-air television, but ANYthing else, including the test match which kicked off yesterday at Seddon Park requires a log-in and a monthly fee. Sky Sport has long had the stranglehold on sport coverage in this country, and it was always going to be inevitable that someone would come along at some point and challenge that. The first cricketing season was also always going to be the worst, as people adjust to the change in format and style – but the lack of marketing and push from NZ Cricket on the

few weeks, and will happily sit back idle and wait until the time comes for New Zealand to head overseas. Because then, the coverage returns to Sky – just another sticking point in the whole situation. Instead of just one provider, we are now set to have to pay for two different providers if we want to watch all of the Black Caps action over the course of the season. Both will, without doubt – as they always do, provide quality coverage. But if New Zealand Cricket had any smarts about them at all, they would have looked at a onepackage-fits-all model instead of this confusing hot mess we have found ourselves in.

huge chunk of cricket tragics in this country, and there was a massive opportunity to jump on board and get a few of them into the mix for the new service, but all we’ve had is radio silence. Incidentally, the same can be said for the fact that coverage on the radio through the usual spot of Radio Sport is also gone, but has there been any encouragement to jump onto Magic Talk and listen in to their coverage? None. It’s a sure-fire way to shoot yourself in the foot really, and hardly a smart marketing ploy. SOFTBALL
LOG-JAM AT THE TOP By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
A thrilling win by the Phoenix in the Hampstead derby has caused chaos at the top of the senior softball standings. The Nix pipped the defending champion Heat outfit 13-12 in the Mid Canterbury senior mixed softball competition at Argyle Park on Saturday. There is now a three-team impasse following other results on Saturday with the senior league going ahead after the weather raised doubts. The Panthers later edged the Demons 8-5 to keep the side in the hunt. Earlier in the day, the Raggamuffins’ 14-11 win over the Ratbags ensured Fairfield bragging rights and gave the side a share of the lead alongside the Panthers and the Heat. The three teams are now all square on 16 points, heading into this weekend’s action. The Fairfield Ratbags are also trail-
ing by the one point, with both the Phoenix and the Demons further back. Tomorrow’s clash between the Heat and Raggamuffins is arguably the match-up of the round from 3pm. The Phoenix face the Demons and the Ratbags play the Panthers from 1pm. The Demons knocked over Fairfield 8-2 in the under-16s with Hampstead having the bye. Junior T-ball and softball were cancelled due to the weather. NETBALL
Tactix call on local pair By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
Georgina Kelly was part of the Lincoln University team, along with Lloyd, which won the Christchurch premier competition. Kate Lloyd (right) has already fronted for the Mainland Tactix in previous seasons.
A couple of Ashburton netballers have received callups into the Tactix for off-season training. Georgina Kelly and Kate Lloyd have been named as part of a 34-player summer training squad for the National Netball League (NNL). The squad was revealed on Tuesday by the Christchurch-based franchise. The two ex-Ashburton College pupils were part of the Lincoln University team which clinched Christchurch’s premier netball competition earlier this year. Lloyd is no stranger to the Tactix after the 24-year-old was first called into the squad as injury cover back in 2017. It has previously been a luckless period for the 1.92m defender after she missed out on a Mainland contract for the 2020 ANZ Premiership. A move to the UK to play for the London Pulse in this year’s Netball Superleague was also halted by Covid.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Your emotions are compressed into bursts. They’re easy to understand in this concentrated form. Hot Tip: Feelings are always much easier to deal with when you’re well-rested. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’ll be challenged to listen well today, and your subject won’t make it any easier to pay attention. Some of what you need to absorb is so dry! Just by making the effort, you’ll be ahead of most others. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You want to find out what people want even if it’s not what you have to give. Because you ask questions without an attachment to certain answers, you learn more than anyone who goes in with an agenda. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): To you, this just feels like a natural attraction, but the fact is that you’re building a relationship, which in turn builds your value to another person and to yourself. You are picking up skills without realising it. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Not every warning warrants immediate response. You’re wary of those who seem to be forever cautioning you against this and that. It feels like it’s more about control than it is about safety. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Beauty is mostly subjective, but even the standards of beauty society agree upon are ever-changing because beauty relies on freshness. It’s never the same twice. Aesthetic pleasures abound today. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Those in your inner circle have earned their place, and yet this is not an allseason pass situation. It’s good to check in with yourself to make sure you’re still giving and getting what’s needed in relationships. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You open the door to another door... This is how it will continue: Some rooms are more inhabitable than others, hallways are of various lengths. You never know what’s on the other side. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): There are people who don’t listen, and then there are people who can’t comprehend. The first category needs a wake-up call. The second category needs a hard pass. Don’t waste your message. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): It’s a good day to put stock in action and maintain a healthy distrust of words. Some people don’t have a lot of control right now over what trips off the tongue. Love is as love does. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Do you get the feeling that the solution you seek will, at some later date, become the problem? Well, you’re right. But it will be a better problem to have. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You can push a thing to the back burner, and it can cook there just as well as anything upfront. Turn it down. Leave it alone; let it simmer. It needs no more attention, only time.

Mid Canterbury’s two age-grade rep sides fell to narrow defeats in their weekend hit-outs. The under-17 boys’ outfit were edged by 2 wickets by Canterbury Country at the Lincoln Domain on Sunday. Meanwhile it was a low scoring affair at Ashburton College as the under-15 side came up short against a Canterbury Country Development team. It was the second match of the summer for the under-15s, after a
64 run loss to Canterbury Country seven days earlier. However like the seniors who were in Invercargill for their first Hawke Cup challenge, it was their first fix of rep action for the under-17s. The Mid Cantabrians won the toss and opted to bat, and they posted 189/7 from their allotted 50 overs. A superlative 84-run third wicket partnership between Patrick Currie and Lachie Jemmett helped guide the visitors to a tricky total. Jemmett top-scored with 54, while an unbeaten 43 from Gus
Millar Newlands makes a desperate dive whilst poaching a quick run against Canterbury Country. PHOTO DOUG BOVETT their respective nine and ten batsmen, Rory Sloan and George Gunn, shepherded the Canterbury Country boys home in the 34th over to deny Mid Canterbury. The pair put on 47 for the ninth wicket, with Sloan especially valuable with a quick-fire 39 from 30 balls to wrestle the game away from the visitors. In the lower grade game, Mid Canterbury validated their decision to bowl first by skittling Canterbury Country for 52 inside 20 overs. Emyln Rees, Hamish O’Reilly and Jack Keane all chipped in
Casey-Solly steered Mid Canterbury’s late innings charge. Canterbury Country’s William Bretherton was the pick of the home team bowlers with 3-21 from his six overs. Set 190 to win, Mid Canterbury had the inside running in the field as Canterbury Country lost wickets at regular intervals. It looked a mountain too high for Canterbury Country once they slumped to 125/7 in the 25th over, still 65 runs required. They sank deeper a few overs later when Archie Prain was run out for 28 to slide to 144/8. However a heroic stand from
with two wickets apiece. It would not be enough though, as Canterbury Country were even more devastating in the park, running through Mid Canterbury’s batting to be all out for 41. Thomas Gunn was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors, taking 3-5 from 2.4 overs. Both Mid Canterbury teams are back in action on Sunday against rep teams from South Canterbury. The Mid Canterbury Primary Boys’ reps also face a Canterbury Country Development team in Darfield on the same day.
