The community police awards held yesterday honoured Christopher Poole and Maxine Watson. Christopher Poole was handed the Canterbury Police Community Member District Commander’s Commendation by District Commander, Superintendent John Price in recognition of his actions in February 2018. Witnessing an Ashburton commercial burglary in the early hours of February 1, Poole followed the offenders’ vehicle and as a result they were apprehended by the police and successfully prosecuted. Superintendent Price commended Poole for his actions. “You witness a crime and rather than do nothing, you put your personal safety aside and did something. You condone bad behaviour if you just walk on by.” Poole said he applied a mantra from his work to the situation that night. “The standard you work to is

the standard you set,” he said. Maxine Watson was awarded the Canterbury Police Certificate of Appreciation for her services to Victim Support spanning 18 years. After presenting the framed certificate Superintendent Price thanked Watson for her dedicated service and professionalism over the years.

Community awards done, next up were the Canterbury Police District Police internal awards. Sergeant Narbey earned himself the District Commander’s Commendation for his handling of the McDonald Street homicide in November 2019. Superintendent Price said Narbey coped extremely well when he single-handily dealt with

scene until further staff could attend was a credit to him.” “It was an interesting night,” admitted Narbey. In receiving the award Narbey’s courage and bravery were recognised as being in line with the traditions and standards of the New Zealand Police Force. Along with the certificate he was also presented with his 14 year Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Superintendent Price told him to wear it with pride as it was well deserved. Rakaia police officer constable Trevor Gurney was also presented with his 14 year Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. “When the public see the police in these rural places, they don’t see the rank, just the uniform, so to them you are like the Rakaia rural district commander.” Superintendent Price went on to thank constable Gurney for how he dealt with the public after the recent homicide in his area. “To begin with we didn’t know who the offender was, it could have been anybody, so by remaining visible to the public your

presence reassured them and made them feel safe,” he said. Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins rounded off the award list, when he was presented with his 21 years of service star. Aoraki Area Commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said the local station was pleased when they managed to poach Senior Sergeant Jenkins from the CIB and get him to join the real world of policing. “It is not easy being in charge of a station, but Leigh is doing a fantastic job. It is a better place for him being here, the station and the culture has a good vibe.” Superintendent Price wanted to thank the families of the officers who received awards. “These awards are just as much for you as they are for them. We ask a lot of our officers and you can’t do it without a strong family.” Superintendent Price also paid homage to the valuable contribution members of the public make to policing. “The police are the public and the public are the police,” he said.

Marathon bowler: ‘I’d do it all again in a heartbeat’ By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Local bowls hero Dan Hopkins says he has been blown away by the support as he reflects on his 65-hour undertaking. The 42-year-old completed his final bowl at Hampstead on Saturday around noon, completing a two-and-a-half-day effort on the bowling green. His endeavour was to aid fundraising efforts for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and raise awareness around the condition. More than $20,000 has been raised for Cystic Fibrosis NZ from the auction, with a Givealittle page still running until December 20. His 17-year-old daughter Caitlin was diagnosed with the condition when she was only 12 weeks. Hopkins, who is also hampered by an auto immune arthritis, said the final hour was an arduous experience. “I was really struggling,” he said. “Pain, leg cramps, it was a battle.” Despite contending with the physical toll, Hopkins overcame the final period as he cast his thoughts to why he was doing it in the first place. “I was thinking about my daughter, and I got to meet another person with CF who actually came down to the event and I got to meet them on the Friday night. “That spurred me on a lot too, knowing that I had met someone who was also going to benefit from what I was doing.” Numerous individuals came down on a revolving door basis to the Ashburton bowling green to bowl alongside a dogged Hopkins. “It was exactly what I needed.” It was somewhat fitting that the people alongside him on the greens during the final minutes were his wife Jess and son Matthew. Emotions flowed for the family at noon once the 65 hours were called. “The support from my wife was brilliant. “She was there doing so much work behind the scenes with the organising every day, she was there almost as often as I was.” A big cheer ensued at the club when

PHOTOS ADAM BURNS 051220-AB-7572 Jess got the “toucher” with her last bowl, matched by her husband doing the same with his last attempt. Emotionally and physically exhausted at the end, Hopkins agreed it was a surreal feeling. “It was a weird feeling knowing what I had just achieved, but in my head it didn’t feel like I had done it.” After a shower, and couple of hours of shut-eye, he managed to haul himself back down to the club where he was simply running on adrenaline. Hopkins said the whole experience which had snowballed from a small-time fundraiser had gone beyond what he expected. “It makes it worth it, and I’ll tell you now, I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.”

Hopkins sets himself to deliver his final bowl of his 65-hour effort.

Hermione back home to roost By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

It survived a near death experience and now Hermione the little owl is happily home in Ashburton. For property owner Gerry Power, it was a highly anticipated homecoming for the little owl that is treated like one of the family. Hermione had spent almost two months recovering at the Oxford Bird Rescue, after Power found her in a bad way from a suspected magpie attack. Although her egg was not viable and her mate did not survive the magpie attack, Hermione now has the chance to find a new male companion and nest again in the future. The Oxford Bird Rescue delivered Hermione home at the end of November, with Power doing the honours of setting his owl free. “We released her at 11am and she flew straight off towards the business estate and was back in her normal place at 5pm,” he said. “The day it rained hard last week she was tucked up underneath the trees sitting there all day, but we haven’t seen her since. “I think she’s gone off hunting for a new mate.” After almost two months away, Power had some concerns about whether the owl would re-establish its home at the property, but was assured by the bird rescue that as owls are territorial she would most likely stick around. “She certainly seems to know where she is, and I assume she’s quite happy where she is. “It’s really cool to get her back and we aren’t concerned that she’s buggered off for a few days as quite often she’ll disappear for a few days and come back, so we’ll just wait and hope.” After the magpie attack, Power said he has been keeping an extra watchful eye on his owl to avoid a repeat, but there had been no signs of the troublesome magpies. After spending the weekend away, Power was mowing his lawns when he found the owl in a bad way. Power picked her up and drove her to Vetlife Ashburton where they performed the initial assessment – finding the egg on the X-ray, named the owl, and contacted the Oxford Bird Rescue. Power said he is extremely thankful to the Oxford Bird Rescue for their efforts to bring the owl back from the brink, rehabilitate her, and return her home to roost.

Parade attracts huge crowd By Sue Newman sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Huge crowds lined the streets on Saturday to watch the town’s Santa parade, proving it takes more than a little bit of rain to dampen Ashburton’s Christmas spirit. Saturday’s turbulent weather was no respecter of the annual Christmas parade, but organiser Carol Johns said the streets were still lined with families keen to kickstart the festive season by welcoming Santa to town. “It rained just as the parade was about to start so that was a bit of a trial, but everyone was still smiling and waving. They didn’t seem to be too worried by the rain,” she said. Spectators lined both East and Cass streets and appeared to be having a great time, Johns said. As organiser of the Christmas parade for several years, Johns has become Ashburton’s unofficial Mrs Christmas. It’s a job she loves and when one event is put to bed, she admits it’s only a few weeks before she starts planning the next festive event. This year a kiddy train that had been in storage for years, reappeared in the parade, decorated as the Candy Train and it will now be available for hire, Johns said. Other items from the parade are often loaned to community groups for their own festive celebrations. “The stuff I own really belongs to the community because I get a lot of support, so for me, it’s more about the time I put

Committee member John Hall said it was a great day and thankfully they all got back before the rain and hail set in. Wet week has silver lining By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

A nightmare school camp has had a silver lining. The Ashburton Christian School (ACS) donated leftover funds from its ill-fated Year 9-10 school camp. The school camp was originally set to be in Wellington, but Covid-19 had the costs mount up and the decision was made to find an alternate South Island option. After working through several options they settled on Kaiteriteri but the weather was anything but settled. “It was torrential rain. “Our tents were all wet in the bottom of them so some of us ended up sleeping inside the kitchen area.” After two nights of being drenched they packed up and hit the road to Hanmer for two days. They even had a flat tyre thrown in for good measure on the trip home. Despite the changing venues, a strong fundraising effort meant the school camp still had money left over and the students decided to donate the money to Princes Court Lifecare. ACS has developed a strong relationship with the retirement home. Students are regular weekly visitors, but due to Covid-19 have been unable to keep up their regular appearances this year. That changed this week when

three student representatives – Johnny Stanway, Reneea Harris, Emma Roberts – and principal Tim Kuipers stopped in to present the donation of over $500. A Princes Court spokeswoman said they were delighted by

“the lovely surprise and would do something special for the residents with the money”. While the trip was less than ideal, it provided some great memories – including the waka ride in Kaiteriteri and jet boat-

ing in Hanmer, and finished on a positive note with the donation. As well as something good coming from the experience, Stanway joked that the lesson was “to make sure your teacher checks the weather”.

VOLUNTEERING SUPERSTARS THANKED Twenty-six volunteers and managers had a moovelous time at Community House on Monday. As a thank you for all their hard work in what has been a pretty crazy 12 months, Mid and South Canterbury Volunteering co-ordinator Dellwyn Moylan injected a little craziness of her own into the appreciation day.

Named ‘Thank moo for being udderly mooverlous volunteers’ Moylan handed out cow shaped cookies and Kapiti Ice-cream at morning tea. Attendees also went into the draw to win ice cream vouchers or an Anzco voucher. To (tip) top off their day of dairy inspired fun everybody left with a bag of milk bottle lollies

OUR VIEW

Goodbye, old friend, it’s sad to see you go By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

I

t will be a little bit different walking through the East Street section of the Ashburton CBD today. It’s not the Christmas decorations hanging all around the place, or the constant buzz of work happening around the place, but in fact the disappearance of a mainstay overnight. A mainstay that became one of the most controversial buildings in the district in recent years, the former i-SITE building. In the dead of the night last night it was relocated to its new home at the Ashburton Airport, leaving behind an empty space where the building once stood. And while not surprised by the fact it’s gone – it’s been going to happen for quite some time, the finality of it all certainly does lend itself towards reminiscing. Not much has brought the community together in a manner in which that building and most important its location did. Public rallies, thousands of commentors, objectors and even supporters all made sure their voices were heard. We’ve been in the fortuitous position of being there for it all too. From our vantage point at Somerset House we look over where the building now once stood and have watched the process to get to here from the outset. It’s been a polarising tale, but one that has finally actually come to an end and while it might still be disappointing for many that it’s not the building it once was, the minimal fuss would suggest that people are moving on and getting on with it. The airport was a fantastic decision too. A new home for a building which is so well known to everyone, is sure to be well-looked after and given the opportunity to play a new role which will see hundreds of visitors to our district flooding through the door. And now we get to look forward to what East Street will look like once work has been completed on that stretch of the community. A fresh look and a new approach is just a continuation of all the good work that’s happening in and around the place currently.

Great things achieved in 2020 By Neil Brown

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

W

e are now just a couple of weeks away from the holidays and things are really starting to wrap up around the district as we get ready for a new year. Many are keen to see the end of 2020 and usher in what will hopefully be a slightly more normal year ahead. But as disruptive and tough as this last 12 months has been, there are many things we can still look back on and be proud of. In the council space, there are several highlights that come to mind. Ashburton’s brand new Library & Civic Centre is now on the cusp of starting construction as we look to award the building contract. The detailed designs were signed off in August and we were incredibly excited to receive a share of the Government’s shovel-ready project funding to put towards the build – an extraordinary $20 million. The two-year Ashburton CBD streetscape revitalisation is now one year into the programme and the results are already looking quite impressive. Cass Street is almost unrecognisable from what it used to be and upgrades on Tancred Street are almost finished as well. Rakaia now has brand new public toilets which will make a significant difference for resi-

The two-year Ashburton CBD streetscape revitalisation is now one year into the programme and the results are already looking quite impressive. dents, particularly when tourism numbers start picking up again. Applications council submitted to the Provincial Growth Fund for town halls and war memorials saw $181,000 approved for repairs to several Mid Canterbury facilities. These were the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall, Mt Somers War Memorial Hall, Seafield Hall and Ashburton Cenotaph – all very important venues

for our district. Council also replaced the three RDR bridges along the Inland Scenic Route which are now stronger than ever and capable of supporting heavy vehicles over 44 tonnes. After a year of restricted access, the full Lake Hood river trail will soon reopen as the last of the Ashburton wastewater pipe river crossing and pump

station project wraps up. This has been a vital project for Ashburton, ensuring that we have the infrastructure in place to meet the needs of our growing urban population in the decades to come. Similarly, the new Ashburton cemetery extension was opened in October and this will cater for our growing burial and remembrance needs for the next 30 to

40 years. 2020 has surely been one unforgettable year for some less than ideal reasons, but this hasn’t stopped some great progress being made on making our district the very best that it can be. I’m looking forward to seeing further achievements as we close the book on 2020 and welcome in a new year ahead.

Farmers walking the talk on climate change W

ith the government declaring a climate emergency, it’s timely to recap what actions farmers are taking to further reduce agriculture’s environmental footprint. I say ‘further reduce’ deliberately. We’re already ahead of many other dairy and meat producing nations on the greenhouse gas front. While the global average for emissions from milk production, processing, and transport is estimated at 2.4kg carbon dioxide equivalent per litre of milk, Kiwi dairy farmers are about 60 per cent more emissions efficient. The emissions from a litre of milk produced here are estimated at between 0.8kg and 0.9kg CO2-equivalent. The average for Europe and the United States is 1.3kg. Reports commissioned by Beef and Lamb show the production of a kilogram of New Zealand beef generates 22kg of carbon dioxide equivalent, and 1kg of lamb generates 19kg of CO2-equivalent. The global median is 26.6kg for a kilo of beef and 25.6kg for a

By Andrew Hoggard FROM THE FARM kilo of lamb. A 2009 study found New Zealand lamb exporting to the UK had a lower carbon footprint than the locally produced lamb – even after factoring in the emissions from shipping the meat to Europe. Despite these credentials, Federated Farmers supports the New Zealand economy and agriculture sector achieving the ambitious goal of becoming warming neutral by 2050. After all, our farmers are on the front line of feeling the impacts of climate change, with farmers battling through droughts, floods and fires in 2020. Last year, we were pleased to see the government accept the latest science that biogenic methane does not need to be reduced to net zero in order to

achieve warming neutrality, and a review is urgently needed to bolster confidence in the controversial alternative targets set for the short lived gas. While New Zealand farmers are already the most climate friendly farmers in the world, Feds are working in good faith with iwi/ Maori groups to make good farmers great and great farmers even better for the climate via the historic agreement known as He Waka Eke Noa The Primary Sector Climate Action Partnership. In tackling the climate change it is important that policies designed to reduce emissions complement (not contradict) those designed to adapt to the effects of climate change. Federated Farmers is concerned that mitigation and adaptation policies are being viewed in a silo to the detriment of rural communities. One prominent example is policies that have incentivised the rapid blanket aforestation of productive sheep and beef farms on the East Coast of the North Island while not adequately factoring the predicted

increased fire risk that will result from climate change potentially making the region hotter and drier. Another example of the current siloed nature of climate change policy in New Zealand is the reluctance from the government to support, or even to enable, infrastructure projects that improve community water security and generate renewable hydro-electricity (the government has invested quite a lot of dollars into getting a community water resilience project off the ground in the Wairarapa, but I understand were hamstrung by the Greens. Now the coalition no longer exists, I hope we can accelerate progress on that front. Water storage infrastructure projects have the potential to mitigate emissions (by producing renewable electricity) and to improve New Zealand’s ability to bolster community resilience in the face of climate change by storing water during times of plenty and drawing upon reserves during times of need. Overly draconian restrictions

preventing consumers and farmers from making up their own minds on the issue of gene editing are another example of a policy that has the potential to hamper New Zealand’s ability to reduce emissions while better preparing for the potential impacts of the climate emergency. We look forward to continuing to work with the Government and iwi/Maori as we seek to better measure, manage and reduce agricultural emissions while maintaining food production via He Waka Eke Noa. In order for climate policy to be long lasting and effective it must be carried out in good faith alongside farmers and not simply done to farmers. Letters may be handed in to the Ashburton Guardian Office, 3rd Floor, Somerset House, 161 Burnett Street or posted to: Santa’s Little Helpers, c/- PO Box 77, Ashburton 7740 and must reach us no later than 12 noon, Friday, December 11.

This year again, along with Santa, we would like to make a special collection of Christmas gifts from Ashburton retailers and businesses to give to families in Mid Canterbury who may not be as fortunate as others. To do this Father Christmas needs two helpers who will each spend half a day with him, on December 15 and 16 , 2020, calling on our Christmas stores collecting gifts. Those gifts will be given to the local St Vincent De Paul, who will then distribute the gifts to families in Mid Canterbury. Our Santa’s Little Helpers will be photographed visiting local stores during the day with Santa and we will publish these photographs on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, in the Ashburton Guardian. All children in the Ashburton District are invited to write a letter stating why they would like to be Santa’s Little Helper and why they would like to help us collect gifts for other families.

Sustainable irrigation trailblazers Leadership in sustainable irrigation and community water issues has led Mid Canterbury dairy pioneers Ted and Sue Rollinson to be recognised in a trans-Tasman competition. The couple are the New Zealand region winners of the inaugural Zimmatic Sustainable Irrigation Awards. The Rollinsons own a 380-hectare dairy farm at Dorie, south of the Rakaia River. Sharemilkers Tom and Leanne Heneghan have been on the farm for 11 years and milk 1500 cows on the property. The awards aim to celebrate excellence in sustainable irrigation and encourage Australian and New Zealand farmers to share ideas for achieving sustainable water management. The Rollinsons were recognised for upgrading their irrigation system several times as technology and efficiencies have improved. For Ted Rollinson, entering the awards was an opportunity to benchmark their irrigation system, which spans 360ha of their farm, against some of the best operators across New Zealand and Australia. He is quick to credit the farm’s success to partnership and teamwork. “The runs we’ve got on the board with our irrigation management have absolutely been the result of a 50/50 partnership with Tom and Leanne. We’ve all worked hard to get to this point. One hasn’t got the award without the other.” Tom Heneghan said he was grateful to the Rollinsons for their commitment to investing in the necessary infrastructure to do the job right. “Ted and Sue have invested heavily in the infrastructure on this farm when they could have easily cut corners and still had a productive and profitable business. As sharemilkers, we are incredibly appreciative of that.” They also acknowledged the input of Charlotte Glass from AgriMagic, who has been their environmental consultant for more than eight years. Awards head judge Keri Johnston said the Rollinsons were dedicated to continuous improvement and have been for many years. “Ted and Sue are just as passionate today as they were when they started. The fact that they have upgraded their irrigation system several times as technology and efficiencies have im-

version ourselves, re-contouring all paddocks and re-aligning the tracks using a 25-year-old 20 tonne digger and a 50-year-old grader.” Ted Rollinson first came to Mid Canterbury from Murchison in 1981 and was one of the first drivers of dairy in Canterbury. The word in the community at the time was that his dairying dream would only last six months before going belly up. Nearly 40 years later, dairy is now an integral part of the Canterbury economy. Over the years, Rollinson has been an advocate for fair and equitable water access in the region, including working with Environment Canterbury and gaining access for farmers to local irrigation schemes. He was also chair of the Rakaia River Users Group for many years. Rollinson said that while he’s had years of farming experience, there was always more to learn and the awards were a great opportunity to do that.

“We’re looking forward to learning from the supreme winners in Australia and see what ideas we could implement here in Canterbury to help us take the next step.” Heneghan said the award showed they were on the right track, but it didn’t mean there was no room for improvement, using what they’ve got more efficiently. “The day you find the perfect farm is the day you give up. And I don’t think you’ll ever find the perfect farm, with a perfect set up, with a perfect use of resources. Nevertheless, we strive for that every day, and this award shows we’re on the right track.” Each entrant was judged on the following categories: sustainable irrigation management; irrigation-driven improvements, which may include cost reductions, environmental outcomes, yield improvements and/or improved efficiencies; waterway protection; stewardship/community.

Progress made, but 20 tonne yield returns remain elusive By Heather Chalmers heather.c@theguardian.co.nz

A goal of achieving wheat yields of 20 tonnes a hectare remains as elusive as ever, but progress has been made, researchers say. Established in 2012, the 20t/ha by 2020 programme aimed at increasing farm profitability by achieving the highest feed wheat yields in the world. Foundation for Arable Research senior researcher cereals Jo Drummond told the Crops Annual Expo at FAR’s research site at Chertsey that crop modelling in 2012 showed that a 20t yield was theoretically possible by extending the growing season by bringing sowing dates forward. This was based on the logic that crops sown earlier intercept more sunlight, grow more biomass and therefore have a higher grain yield potential. However, in reality, bringing sowing dates forward to February wasn’t successful. For a wheat crop to achieve early sowing yield potential it needed to have good standing power, a long growing season with a slower rate of development and excellent disease resistance. Early trials found February-sown crops could accumulate 3t/ha drymatter before winter, but the resulting bulky crop was prone to lodging (falling over) and highly susceptible to disease, Drummond said. By 2015, trials identified a late-March “sweet-spot” with yields around 16t/ha. However, robust plant growth regulators, fungicide and insecticide programmes were needed to maximise yield. By 2017, results showed that the highest grain yields were actually achieved from April sowings, although the lateMarch “sweet-spot” was still apparent at some sites and promising yields were achieved with early-March sowings. From 2018, the focus shifted to identifying germplasm with potential to produce high yields at early sowing dates. These varieties also performed well at mid to late April sowing dates. The combination of cultivar genetics

and perfect conditions through grain fill in the 2019-20 season contributed to the highest yields of the programme with individual plot yields of over 18t/ha and cultivar yields of 17.7t/ha from an April 24 sowing date. High yields were also achieved across autumn wheat cultivar performance trials and Mid Canterbury farmer Eric Watson’s world record of 17.4t/ha was achieved from a mid-April sowing date. “While we learned that very early sowing dates weren’t the answer, we also learned that new germplasm is capable of producing yields in excess of the early model predictions for mid to late April sowing dates. “These later sowing dates can reduce weed, pest and disease pressure and provide the opportunity to reduce management inputs.” Drummond said the production goal posts had shifted and it was not about achieving the highest yields at all costs. “While it still makes sense to aim for the highest possible yields, those yields must be achieved within environmental and regulatory boundaries.” Row spacings and sowing densities had also been investigated, but growers may be reaching the ceiling in terms of yields, Drummond said. “We’ve done the big jumps.” PGG Wrightson Seeds cereal breeder Steve Shorter said that while 20t/ha may be achieved in patches of paddocks it was challenging on any type of scale. “It is like the 100m record. You chip away at it, but you don’t suddenly get someone taking half a second off the speed. I don’t expect it to happen with wheat yields either.” PGG Wrightson Seeds’ breeding programme was focused on broadly adaptable cultivars that did well from one season to the next and could recover from setbacks. Disease resistance was also important, but challenging, as pathogens were constantly changing. “Future breeding is not about going for that absolute top yield when you can occasionally get it but having that consistent performance across diverse environments,” Shorter said.

Foundation for Arable Research senior researcher cereals Jo Drummond and PGG Wrightson Seeds cereal breeder Steve Shorter say further gains in wheat yields will be incremental rather than being achieved in big steps. PHOTO HEATHER CHALMERS

CROQUET

Siblings swipe silverware By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

The McCorkindale brothers went two-for-two in Oamaru at the weekend, as the pair walked away with both key pieces of silverware. Continuing their stellar form on the greens, the siblings ensured it was nothing but the red of Waireka dominating at the the Windsor Richards Association Croquet handicap and Open Association Croquet Championships at Oamaru’s Awamoa Gardens. Logan McCorkindale was a comprehensive winner in the Open Championship playing and pegging out six games and numerous triple peels. The next best was Aorangi’s Graeme Simpson with four wins to his name. Following in his brother’s footsteps was Reece at the Windsor Richards event, winning all of his games 26-0 in a period of about 45 minutes. The Waireka youngster trumped hometown favourite Bob Wickenden, who had to settle for second. McCorkindale won the Croquet New Zealand silver award, getting 12 hoops without a break, and will now represent South Canterbury at the New Zealand Windsor Richards finals. The pair are in Nelson this week for the Croquet New Zealand South Island Association Croquet Championships doubles which begins today. Logan will then stay on for the singles event.

BOWLS

Locals on song in Stuart Gordon By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

They might have stopped short of filling the green completely, but the 14 teams that took part in the Stuart Gordon Fours on the weekend wouldn’t have known any different. The annual Christmas tournament at the Methven Bowling Club was again a great success on Sunday. With a mixture of fine weather and some slightly cooler moments, the 56 players who took to the green all enjoyed a nice and relaxed day of competition. But when the dust settled, local knowledge proved the most fruitful. Only two teams ended the day with four wins from their four matches and it was Brent Mayson’s side that got the nod by just two ends from the Rosemary Bennett skipped side. Mayson was joined by Aaron Allred, Bruce Harper and Tom McLean and the quartet were on song all day producing some dominant performances. Former locals, Colin Taylor and Brian Smith formed one half of a Belfast side who finished third for the day with three wins while Alec Crawford’s Allenton team finishing fourth with two wins and a draw. A number of players will be back on the greens again this weekend, this time at the Ashburton Bowling Club in the Domain for the Milson Cup Men’s Triples.

Dominating in the heat

Classy open class trotter The Dominator was too slick for his pacing rivals at yesterday’s trials at the Ashburton Racecourse. The Donna Williamson trained, Craig Thornley driven runner found the front early in his mobile heat and never looked back, travelling on nice tight lines right to the winning post to win untroubled. It was the perfect hit-out for the horse as the atten-

tion now points towards Sunday’s Methven Trotting Club meeting where he will tackle the Trotters’ Green Mile. He is one of 14 nominations for the $17,500 free-for-all event. Other notable nominations include, Majestic Lavros, Matua Tana, One Apollo and Heavyweight Hero. In the pacing equivalent Green Mile, 13 horses have been nominated including open class

horses Henry Hubert, Stylish Memphis and Classie Brigade alongside Geraldine Cup winner, William Wallace. All counted 214 nominations were received for the meeting with 11-races likely to be carded for one of the biggest days of racing in the Ashburton District for the year.

TOP ORDER WOES CRICKET

Stags players celebrate the wicket of Celtic batsman Ben Davenport.

By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Technical’s batting headaches returned in the shorter format as Celtic clinched a rain shortened T20 encounter on Saturday. The Timaru club won the match courtesy of the Duckworth-Lewis Method in Ashburton, after rain halted Celtic’s march towards victory. The result came off the back of a top order collapse for the Stags, after the hosts opted to set a total in the first innings. None of the top four could get into double figures as Tech slumped to 29/4 inside the first eight overs.

PHOTO ADAM BURNS 081220-AB-7908

There was a bit more stickability among the middle and lower order during the next few overs, as the Stags strived to set something semi-competitive. A sixth wicket stand of 26 between Richard Print (11) and Sam Bennett (22) between overs 8-15 was the closest thing the Stags got to momentum. A further 24 runs from Alex Veint (21) and Harry Jones during the final five overs was also handy, however Celtic were well on top at the break, having kept Tech to under 100 from their 20. The Stags began strongly as Print

trapped opener Sam Porter in front during the first over of the innings. Jones then picked up the wicket of Michael Lees to give the home team a sniff at 19/2. The Celts consolidated over the next handful of overs, before the Stags again dragged themselves back into the contest with two quick strikes to leave the visitors at 35/4. With the threat of rain, both sides were delicately positioned in the game. Celts’ pair Dan Laming and William Johnson then knuckled down with a

half-century stand to guide the South Cantabrians to within touching distance of the target. Rain arrived with the score at 93/4 in the 18th, before the match was awarded to the visitors. It was likely to have been Tech’s final cricketing outing before Christmas – the club have the bye in the T20 competition next weekend, and their scheduled one-day game against Timaru is in doubt, with the South Canterbury club reportedly withdrawing from the competition.

BOXING

Rumble in the jungle

A mix of brawn and ringside glamour took over Methven on Saturday for the long awaited Fight Night South event. Several amateur boxing bouts took to the ring, entertaining a bumper crowd at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall. Organisers said everyone was a winner on the night, after competitors had undertaken a rigorous 12-week training programme. Dame Lynda Topp hosted the event as MC Ken for the evening, and Kiwi heavyweight star Shane Cameron was there to cheer on all the boxers and provide pep talks. Finishing off the night with a final explosive exhibition bout were Roman Prazak and Matt Stone, with the former conceding a 40 kg weight advantage to his friend and sparring partner. Cashmere too clinical TENNIS

By Adam Burns

STANDINGS

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Cashmere - 76 Te Kura Hagley - 54 Country Ashburton - 47 Elmwood - 46 Waimairi - 45 Shirley - 33

It was always going to be tough. However it was a clinical Cashmere outfit which ran out comprehensive winners on Saturday as the Christchurch club tightened its grip on the Canterbury premier men’s tennis race. Cashmere swept the Mid Cantabrians 5-0 to clinch a total of 14 competition points, running red hot throughout the day after only dropping the one set. It started promisingly on court for the home team, as Jack Tiller and Rhys Cromie secured an early lead in the doubles against Cashmere brothers James and Tim Meredith. But that would be the only joy for Ashburton as Cashmere took control for the remainder of the meet, as the Meredith brothers won the doubles clash after a third set tiebreaker. Meanwhile Cashmere’s Reece Falck and Johnny McHarg took out their doubles match in straight sets over the local pair of Nathan McKenzie and Ben Smith 6-2 7-5. It was one-way traffic in the singles, with Smith, McKenzie and Sam Bubb well beaten in their respective contests, as Cashmere’s impressive line-up reinforced why they’re the clear frontrunners for the title. There is now daylight between Cashmere and the chasing pack, in fact 22 points worth of daylight. Country Ashburton, who now slip to third in the standings, will have to brush themselves off ahead of their return bout with Elmwood this weekend.

OPINION

Growing a false sense of strength By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

N

ew Zealand is proficient at winning cricket tests at home. The opening test demolition of the West Indies was no different. At home, we are proving to be giants. I want to see if we can stand up when we are the visiting team. Our test team has been going superbly for the past four summers. We have won seven of our last nine test series, to be second on the ICC test rankings. That span includes a 2-1 win over Pakistan in the UAE, but the other wins all came at home. The other results were a drawn series in Sri Lanka, and then there was the 3-0 capitulation in Australia. That, a series in Australia, is the true test of any team’s calibre, and we missed the mark by a long shot. We don’t get a test series in Australia that often, but after a good run of form from our boys I still remember that feeling of confidence heading into that most recent series, that this could be the time we really matched it with the big brothers across the Tasman. Australia at home is a big step

up from beating the next tier nations in New Zealand, and it showed. We looked then like the West Indies do now. Ducks on a different pond, struggling with the new surrounds. I’ve seen criticism of the West Indies that one of our provincial sides would beat them, and in New Zealand conditions that’s a possibility. I think we are again developing a false sense of the strength of our side. When we were outclassed by the Australians we didn’t adapt to the local conditions – the same way the West Indies struggled with the pace and carry at Seddon Park. The problem is that the Black Caps don’t get to play test series in Australia, South Africa, India, or England often enough. Actually, we don’t play enough test cricket full stop, but the times have changed. We last toured to South Africa in 2016 – losing the two-match series 1-0 which was followed by a 3-0 drubbing in India which was in 2016/17. Granted, that was a different team than the one we boast today. In Hamilton, Kane Williamson was all class on his way to an impressive 251, his third double century and second in Hamilton.

In the same conditions, the West Indies as an entire XI couldn’t match Williamson’s score in both their turns at bat. Our bowlers were on home conditions and the tourists were not used to them, but they put the ball in the right spots, and the West Indian batsman were guilty of playing poor shots to be rolled for 138 and then 247. It was a good win. Our seam attack is arguably the best we have had for some time with Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and now Kyle Jamie-

son all chipping in with wickets. While not express pace, this is no longer the pop-gun bowling attack of Black Caps past. I just want to see how they would fare in foreign conditions. There are, as always, question marks over our opening pair. Tom Latham has cemented his spot at the top of the order and is needing a regular and consistently performing partner. With Williamson and Taylor the one-two punch in the middle we are often saved blushes of low scoring efforts.

This team is good, they just can’t be considered great yet without proving themselves offshore. At home, we look great, like when India was here last summer and we handled them with ease. We have two tests against Pakistan coming up that should prove a stiffer challenge, but that’s it for tests for this summer. Unfortunately, Covid-19 may restrict the opportunities for the Black Caps have to head offshore to test their mettle for a while.

By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A second straight loss for Allenton’s senior cricketers has them fighting to keep pace with the competition frontrunners. The Mid Canterbury club fell to a 77run loss to Peninsula-Harbour on Saturday at Tai Tapu, leaving the team in a Canterbury Country Competition dogfight amid a three-team scrap for third spot. Just a few weeks ago Allenton were well out in front of the pack. Again it was the batting the cause for concern, bowled out for less than 100 in consecutive weekends.

A fifth wicket partnership worth 62 runs between Peninsula’s Toby Doyle (74) and Harpreet Singh (26) helped the home team to a total which was awkward enough for the visitors. Allenton would have been the happier of the two teams at the innings break, with Peninsula crumbling over the final six overs to be all out for 166, losing six wickets for 24 runs. The wickets were once again shared around Allenton’s industrious bowling attack with Mana Singh, Manpreet Hakkla

and Sanjay Undre Singh picking up two wickets apiece. After being blasted out for 44 in the previous week, Allenton required a steadier platform at the crease to give themselves a chance. Karmjeet Singh and Sanja Undre Singh got Allenton to 17 without any lapses before the skipper was caught. From that point they lost wickets at regular intervals. By the 11th over, Peninsula were well into Allenton’s middle order, and when

the team fell to 51/5 with Sanjay removed for 33, it was a swift decline. Mana Singh hung in there for 21, but none of the lower order could hold up the other end – Mana the last man out in the 28th over as Allenton were mopped up for 89. Peninsula’s Kawalbir Singh was the star of the show for the hosts, claiming superb figures of 5-13 from six overs. There is plenty of hard work for the Allenton side ahead of this weekend’s clash with Swannanoa in Ashburton. PHOTO HEATHER MACKENZIE 221120-HM-1015

CYCLING

Smitheram has the final say Mark Smitheram was the big winner on Sunday, as the Tinwald Cycling Club completed one last dress rehearsal before its blue ribbon events. Riders contested the McIntosh Group, 60km handicap

event around the Blackbridge block, seven days out from the club championships. Smitheram was rewarded for some good recent form, taking victory in a hard-fought three-up sprint to the line to lift the Eddie Ward Shield. Co-marker Marcel Smithers also continued her stellar season, securing second place spoils and receiving the Chris Ward Cup for the first woman home.

Paul Williams produced his best hit out of the season thus far to claim the final podium spot, and Wayne Whiting led the chasing bunch to claim fourth place. John Uden and Nick Grijns were in the thick of the finish to round out the top six positions. Scratch marker Steve Hands laid down another strong display to claim fastest time honours, riding the course in 84 minutes 43 seconds. Co-markers Tony Ward and Kyle Gray secured second and third times respectively. A good field of juniors and division 2 riders contested a 20km handicap event, with Mitch Brookland enjoying an immense outing. He rode through from the back mark to take the win and record

the fastest time, completing the circuit in 34 minutes 8 seconds. Zoe Spillane also produced a top drawer performance, catching all bar the victorious Brookland en route to second place. Tegan Marriott had a stand out ride to hold on bravely to clinch third place. Hot on her heels was the ever consistent Ryan Gallagher, with Honor Bradford and Penny Marriott next home. Kyla Smith had her first showing of the season take the win in division 2 and fastest time honours in a tight finish from Janette Hooper and Debbie Skinner. Next week the club will race for club championship titles around the Wakanui Beach block.

The first week of December has disappeared, in a blur of busyness with bowls and end of year functions. Wendy Watson and her team of merry men and ladies have been exceedingly busy, with the club facilities proving popular for those wanting to try bowls for their entertainment and a nice snack or BBQ to finish off the year. Our own end of year dinner was attended by forty members, the meal was very nice and it was lovely not to have to cook or do dishes. The men played 3x4s Inter club against Ashburton on Saturday winning two of the three games, with the aggregate being -1 the 2x4 teams played Papanui and won both games. Well done. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The question will arise: “What have you done for me lately?” Even the best arrangements can go stale. The maintenance on relationships isn’t always obvious, but make the effort and you’ll figure it out. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The task seems beneath you, but you have to do it. You may as well change how you’re going to think about this. Give it a new title. Naming things helps you frame them differently. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’d love to trust the one who says, “Don’t worry, I got this.” Unfortunately, until it’s proven, it’s not easy. You’re better off trusting the one who admits not knowing but is also determined to figure it out. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): There are times when drama keeps things interesting, helps people bond and turns a relationship into a story. Then there’s today – when drama is tiresome and stands in the way of getting work done. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Transitions are so interesting. The in-between stage, when you know you can’t stay where you are but you don’t yet know where else to go, is awkward. Also, it’s exciting. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’re willing to adapt to your environment or do what it takes to work smoothly with the people around you. What you’re not willing to do is to stray from your principles. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): What you’re considering will be an uphill climb. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t tackle it. Know what you’re getting into. If you go forward, you’ll be working an entirely different set of “muscles.” SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Those who assume they are not biased have the worst bias. Those who admit that they, like everyone, have an agenda are more likely to make a fair assessment of the scene. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): If you don’t have enough laughter flowing through your days (and really, who does?) this is the time to take off in search of it. You won’t have to go far. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Your schedule is something to think carefully through. How well does it represent your priorities? Are you unfairly giving someone more of your time just because they demand the attention? AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Share your work. When you show people what you’re doing, you see it differently – more through their eyes than yours. Also, you inspire others to take risks and go in new directions. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You believe that people have good intentions, and it’s usually better to extend the benefit of the doubt. Even if someone disappoints you, believing in people feels better than doubting them.

An action-packed rep encounter at the Ashburton Oval finished with Mid Canterbury’s under-17s on the right side of the ledger. The age group selection won a gripping showdown with South Canterbury by five wickets, with a complete team performance trumping a star showing by the visiting captain on Sunday. The visitors racked up 250/6 batting first at the Domain Oval, off the back of a colossal turn at the crease by Toby Clemett.

Coming in at 20/1, the South Canterbury skipper hit 154 off 129 balls, which included 18 fours and a six. It may have been a different story had he had support around him, although the number three bat managed to dominate the strike and scoring in a third wicket century stand alongside Logan Sowden (27) and again in a fourth wicket stand of 73 runs. Hugh Saunders (2-29) and Lachie Gardner (2-39) were the pick of the Mid Canterbury attack.

It was a shaky start in reply for the hosts who lost Patrick Currie in the second over, bowled by Jarrod Phillips.

South Canterbury hit back with the wicket of Angus in the 10th over, to leave the hosts at 46/2. Devon Flannery added 10 before he was caught to leave the visitors on top. Jemmett and Toby Robinson then dug in to wrestle the advantage back in what was ultimately the decisive period of the match. The duo took Mid Canterbury past 100, before adding another 107 runs in a fourth wicket stand totalling 143. By the time Jemmett nicked behind for 80 in the 35th, the hosts

were very much in the box seat, with just 44 required from the final 15 overs. Robinson took up the mantle to ensure his side would get home, dominating the scoring over the next few overs. He eventually fell for 86 with the win in sight, however his 80ball effort proved to be a match winner, alongside Jemmett who also took a spectacular one handed catch in the gully, diving away to his left in the first innings. The hosts got home in the 44th over, with five wickets and 37 balls to spare, to round out an outstanding win.
